2023.06.07 14:26 Noblesse311 Character Concept [110]: HMS Conqueror (S48)
Faction:
Royal Navy
Class:
Repeat Valiant/Churchill-class Nuclear-powered Attack Submarine (Submarine in-game)
Background:
The third and final ship of the Churchill-class (also known as the Repeat Valiants as it featured many internal improvements, but outwardly looked about the same as the preceding Valiant-class Nuclear-Powered Submarines)
HMS Conqueror) was ordered on 9 August 1966 and was laid down at the Cammell Laird Shipyard at Birkenhead, at the time in the County of Cheshire, England, on 5 December 1967. She was launched on 28 August 1969 and commissioned into the Royal Navy on 9 November 1971, the final nuclear-powered submarine to be completed by Cammell Laird. (all future Royal Navy submarines would be exclusively built by Vickers Shipyard)
Conqueror’s career between commissioning in 1971 and the Falklands War in 1982 was largely uneventful, with the only thing of note being the replacement of her Type 2001 sonar array with a Type 2020 version and a Type 2026 towed array that could be let out and retrieved sometime in the late 1970s. It was also around this time that the sub would be captained by Cmdr. Chris Wreford-Brown.
Upon the outbreak of the Falklands War in April 1982, Conqueror would be among many British submarines that were deployed to the South Atlantic (including sister ship HMS Courageous), departing Faslane Naval Base in Scotland on 3 April, and arriving at the Falklands exclusion zone on 24 April, exactly three weeks later. She was tasked with scanning the area for Argentine shipping, in particular, Argentina’s light aircraft carrier ARA Veinticinco de Mayo (formerly HMS Venerable). On 30 April, Conqueror spotted the Brooklyn-class Light Cruiser ARA General Belgrano (formerly the USS Phoenix) sailing southwest of the Falklands outside of the exclusion zone. However, with 25 de Mayo approaching the islands from the north, the commander of the HMS Hermes task force, Rear Adm. John “Sandy” Woodward, fearing a pincer attack between the two ships, requested permission from his superiors to sink Belgrano. That permission, after some debate, would be granted by Adm. Sir John Fieldhouse and the order to engage was sent to HMS Conqueror, in the interim, Belgrano would retire from its attack vector and head west, a move that made later events incite controversy, although both Belgrano’s captain and the Argentine government would acknowledge that the attack was a legitimate act of war.
On 2 May, Conqueror would launch three Mark 8 torpedoes
\1]) at Belgrano, with two of them striking the ship and exploding. Twenty minutes later, the cruiser was rapidly sinking and abandoned by her crew. General Belgrano was unable to send a mayday signal, due to electrical failure and poor visibility, which meant that the two escorting destroyers, ARA Piedra Buena (formerly Sumner-class USS Collett) and ARA Bouchard (formerly Sumner-class USS Borie) would not find out about Belgrano’s sinking until hours after the latter sank, taking 323 men with her. The sinking of the Belgrano was a notable one, as it was the second time since the end of World War II that a submarine sank an enemy warship
\2]), but it was the first (and at the time of writing only) nuclear-powered attack sub to do the deed. The Bouchard was also believed to be hit by Conqueror’s third torpedo. Though Conqueror would not again fire her torpedoes in anger, having had to evade the efforts of the Argentine Air Force (FAA) to locate and sink the submarine, she would spend the remainder of the war helping the task force by using sophisticated monitoring equipment to track FAA aircraft. Belgrano’s sinking also shocked both the Argentine people and military junta, and contributed to the Argentine Navy’s role being significantly reduced for the remainder of the conflict, and in turn, contributed to Argentina’s defeat in the Falklands War.
After the war, HMS Conqueror would return to Faslane flying a Jolly Roger, a customary act of Royal Navy submarines after achieving a kill. Said Jolly Roger would feature an atom, a cross torpedo pattern, a dagger and the outline of a cruiser, representing Conqueror being an SSN, the weapon used for the sinking, the secretive nature in the operation and the hull type for the kill respectively. This banner can be found at the Royal Navy Submarine Museum in Gosport in South East England.
Her post war career would also see some notable moments. Later in 1982, Conqueror would take part in Operation Barmaid, an operation to raid and capture a Soviet passive towed scanner array that was towed by a Polish-flagged vessel. Conducted as a joint Anglo-American operation just outside Soviet territorial waters, the sub used cutters affixed to her bow to shear off the 3” (76mm) thick wire before silently returning to base on the Clyde. On 2 July 1988, Conqueror collided with the Dalriada, an Army Sail Training Association yacht. Its four crewmen would be rescued, but the yacht sank.
Conqueror was decommissioned on 2 August 1990, with the submarine’s periscope, captain’s cabin and main control panel joining her Jolly Roger at the Royal Navy Submarine Museum. At the time of writing, she is currently housed at Devonport, County Devon, one of twenty nuclear subs housed there by the Ministry of Defense awaiting final disposal.
\1]: While HMS Conqueror was equipped with the newer Tigerfish torpedoes, the Mark 8, a venerable design dating back to the interwar era, was far more reliable and used instead.)
\2]: The first instance would occur during the Third Indo-Pakistani War eleven years prior when PNS Hangor, a Daphné-class Submarine used by the Pakistani Navy, sank INS Khukri, a Blackwood-class Frigate in an instance that also marked the only instance to date of an Indian Navy warship sinking to enemy action since independence in 1947.)
Namesake:
A conqueror is a person who conquers.
Rarity:
UR
Stat Spread:
As a nuclear powered submarine, Conqueror sports a superb Torpedo Stat (S), a decent HP stat compared to their WW2 counterparts (B) and a superb speed stat (A). As a Cold War submarine that has no guns, she has no firepower stat.
Abilities:
- Her Majesty’s Silent Service: If sortied with at least one other Royal Navy Submarine/SSN, increase the critical chance of all Torpedoes this or any Royal Navy SS/SSN launches by 3% (8%) and increase the critical damage dealt by 15% (25%).
- Setting the Sun of May: Increase damage done to Sol de Mayo (ARA) warships by 15% (30%) and increase damage done to Light Cruisers by 25% (45%). For every ship this submarine sinks, increase the damage dealt by 1% (2%) with its cap at 10% (20%) until the submarine withdraws.
- The Empire Strikes Back: When this ship arrives at attack position and again when retreating from battle, launch a unique, defense ignoring torpedo barrage, damage based on skill level.
Personality:
Conqueror (S48) could be best described as someone who has a Sugar-and-Ice Personality (or in Anime jargon, a Kuudere). On the outside, she is cold, aloof and professional, dedicated to her missions and largely keeps to herself. Once one gets to know her better, she shows herself to be more optimistic and warm, if a bit socially awkward.
Quotes:
- Acquisition: My name is Conqueror. I am the sub that sank the General Belgrano during the war of the South Atlantic. If there is nothing else to add, can I get going now?
- Secretary (Idle) 1: Focus on your work. You wouldn’t want to disappoint anyone, do you?
- Secretary (Idle) 2: I am simply doing my duty, I’m not interested in what other people think or praise about me.
- Secretary (Idle) 3: Always stay on guard, don’t make such careless mistakes.
- Secretary (Touch): What requests do you want of me?
- Secretary (Special Touch): I honestly hope your libido matches your skill in battle.
- Skill Activation: Neutralizing target…
- Affinity (Disappointed): Such a waste of time, you are.
- Affinity (Stranger): If you wish to be useful, then tell me the next objective you wish to see done. I don’t have all day.
- Affinity (Friendly): If you want my honest truth about the war, I spent thirteen years for the opportunity to do what I did. I didn’t want to foul it up.
- Affinity (Like): I’m…not much of a talker. I don’t have anything to talk about here so…what do you like to do in your free time?
- Affinity (Love): Whenever I need to go out to battle, I try to keep my cool, and I’m still good at what I do, but the way you make me feel…hmm…I wonder…
- Oath: This ceremony is just like the one on the return to Faslane. Last time I thought nothing of it, but now…with you here…
- Sortie (Churchill): You’re a good talker when you should be hunting stealthily.
- Sortie (Conqueror (World of Warships)): Heroes aren’t always what they’re cracked up to be.
- Sortie (Phoenix and/or General Belgrano): Sunrise, sunset. As all things should be.
Design:
Conqueror is depicted as a girl in her mid-teens with golden yellow hair tied in pig-tails that extend down to her elbows, and ruby red eyes. Her attire is largely inspired by the equipment utilized by the Special Boat Squadron (now known as the Special Boat Service) during the early 1980s, and in particular during the Falklands War. She wears a black skin-tight one-piece wetsuit that covers her entire body, with the cut offs being around her hands and halfway down to the calves of her legs. Among her equipment is a snorkel on her right shoulder, though not worn, and comes with a L9A1 Browning Hi-Power pistol in her left hand. In addition, Conqueror wears a red crystal around her neck in the shape and style of Phoenix’s tie at the end of her hair, symbolizing a prize for sinking her in the Falklands War.
Her rigging is largely the same as her submarine model, but functions as a one-man Submarine Delivery Vehicle for which she rides on top, with the control mechanism being on two handles on each side of the sail (akin to how I-56 operates her rigging)
A/N:
This sub was suggested to me by
u/A444SQ, I hope you enjoyed this rendition of Conqueror as I did making it.
The historical HMS Conqueror (or rather the last iteration of her) is a fascinating ship and one that I figure would be deserving of its UR spot given its single defining achievement. But this would also be my first UR submarine (at least my first not named Alicorn which is OP even by Ace Combat standards) and with nothing to base it on, it's difficult and might actually be a bit underpowered by comparison. It is what it is I suppose.
As always, if you want to suggest a ship or retrofit in the future, please leave it in the comments below, you can also reach me via DM's to make your suggestions as well. We're returning to Operation Weissenburg next time with Tier VIII Battlecruiser, a design dating to March 1918 but was depicted by WeeGee to be developed in 1944, with their take on Schnelle Großekampfschiffe 4531, KMS Zieten.

2023.06.07 05:13 Knightofaus New Direction for the Trade Federation Directorate
New Direction for the Trade Federation Directorate In the aftermath of the successful motion to raise compensation for the Naboo, Nute Gunray and his inner circle have been left reeling.
After having to pay for the majority of the Trade Federations compensation, the inner circle and Viceroy have been forced to refill the Trade Federation Directorate that has been left vacant since the last directorate was assassinated by the Nebular Front during the Eriadu Conference.
This new directorate has been selected from a Federation Assembly hosted on the CIS Yacht. The assembly consisted of Federation member corporations and ambassadors from the Federations Protectorates.
In attendance were also members of the galactic community invited by Senator Faus. They include Senator Maac Donin leader of the GRP, Vice Chancellor Fi Lor and leader of the FTP, Senator Mina Bonteri leader of the CIS and our Chancellor Mon Mothma. The presence of the galactic community was felt and lent much support to the Federations Protectorates and Corporate reformers.
The Democratic Front organized a protest to picket the Assembly. Their protest was a stark reminder to the Federation's corporate members that the behavior of the Federation will not be ignored by the galaxy. Representatives from the Federations Protectorates were bolstered by the show of support and were confident that they would be heard.
Deliberation was tense and the Assembly had divided into 3 factions:
- There were the Neimoidians who still supported the Viceroy and the benefits they received from his leadership.
- There were the corporate reformers led by Tella Marella of Tella Interstellar. These corporations have been shut out of profitable contracts and trade routes and also blame the hostility against the Federation on the Viceroys unchecked power and his blatant disregard for Republic law.
- And the Protectorates who were justifiably angry at their treatment by the Federations corporations and sought to be more involved in the Directorate or even leave the Federation.
It was rumoured that Viceroy Gunray had planned to attend the event to pressure the Neimoidians who were still undecided about the new direction of the Federation, however due to the assemblies neutral location aboard the CIS Yacht, the presence of the Chancellor, Vice Chancellor and the Democratic Front protest he elected to stay in his Cato Neimoidian fortress.
There was still some pushback from those who still support the Viceroy and the Inner Circle. Mainly from their Neimoidian supporters. They were concerned a more democratic directorate will result in more deliberation and less decisive direction. It would disrespect the important role of the Viceroy. They also expressed concern that these dramatic changes will drive away older member corporations that are the Federations most profitable members and relaxing control over the Federations Protectorates would result in less profits for the Federation and more expensive goods for the planets of the Core Worlds.
At the end of the Assembly a new directorate had been formed made up of members from all 3 factions. The viceroys supporters the smallest, with the Protectorates and Corporate Reformers being nearly equal in size.
This new directorate is hoping to return the Federation to its original mission of bringing trade, security and commerce to the planets and trade routes of the Republic and will strive to return the Federation to its former pride.
The main goals of this new directorate are:
- Ensure that the directorate represents the interests of the Federations corporations and planetary protectorates. The Directorate will act in an open and transparent way. Meetings will be recorded and viewable by Federation members.
- Their job is to govern, supervise and direct the operations of the Trade Federation using the Federation budget. The Federation Budget will rely less on direct commerce and profit and instead collect fees and funding from its members.
- No 2 directors can be associated with the same corporation or protectorate. Includes but not limited to holding stock in or being employed by that corporation or protectorate.
- Increase benefits for member corporations:.
- Corporate members will form an assembly to appoint members to the Directorate
- Contracts must be open and fairly assigned so that any corporation may bid on them.
- Hyperspace maps are to be shared among all members to prevent any one corporation from forming a monopoly on a trade route
- Escorts are organized on matters of need based on the danger rating of a trade route or sector
- Increased investment to diversify Federation membership
- And give benefits to the protectorates:
- Protectorate members will form an assembly to appoint members to the Directorate
- Treaties will be renegotiated
- To allow for greater control over their PDF forces
- Have fairer trade agreements
- Receive funding for their own Federation merchant companies and receive the same benefits as established Federation corporations
- Place limits and oversight on the powers of the Viceroy and restructure the directorate to prevent any one cabal or corporation from taking control and negatively influencing the other members of the Federation. Viceroys who overstep their power can be removed by the Directorate.
- Update regulations, structure and droid programing to prevent the authority of the Trade Defense Force from being exploited for personal gain or into performing illegal actions.
- The Trade Defense Force will work with the Judicial Forces to clean up corruption. Focusing on corporations and protectorates that participate in illegal, immoral and corrupt operations like:
- Bribery
- Embezzlement
- Slavery
- Piracy/privateering
- Enforcing exploitative agreements
- Monopolies
- Mistreatment of droids
The Major drawbacks from these changes include:
- Leaks about Federation plans will increase.
- The Federation Budget will be reduced. It will increase as members choose to apply more funding. This could lead to funding being used to influence the Directorate.
- The Directorate will be more democratic, but less calculated in its actions.
- Bigger, established corporations will hold less power and make less profit. They will also dislike the involvement (or meddling) of the senate in internal Federation business.
- Protectorates may end up leaving the Federation if fairer trade agreements are not met. They will lose Federation PDF ships, and will need to find protection from elsewhere. A lack of alternatives reduces their negotiating power.
- Prices of goods will also rise, particularly where they are sold to customers in the core worlds.
- The Viceroys power and influence of the Neimoidians will be weaker. Neimoidians may also fracture into many different competing corporations.
- If not handled correctly, scaling back the Trade Defense Force may compromise security in the outer rim and hinder internal anti-corruption efforts.
- Increased oversight, regulation and anti-corruption investigations will increase the powers of the Trade Defense Force. Working with the Judicial Forces is important to counterbalancing this influence, but might be seen as the republic infringing on Federation sovereignty.
As Senator of the Trade Federation I look forward to working closely with the new Directorate and bringing much needed change to the Federation so that we may become a better organization that works more closely with the Senate and worlds of the Republic. We will encourage new trade corporations, merchants and planets to join our Federation and promote fair commerce across the galaxy.

2023.06.06 17:21 ArthurDrakoni Riordan Retrospective: Daughter of the Deep
Welcome once again to my Riordan Retrospective. For those of you just joining the fun, this is my look back at the works of Rick Riordan. That means Percy Jackson, its sequels, and spin-offs. This is less of a formal review and more of a relaxed look back.
Last time, we finished our look back at
The Trials of Apollowith a look back at
The Tower of Nero. We thought that we’d said goodbye to the worlds of Rick Riordan. Little did we know that a new book was about to surface. As such, we’re taking a look back at
Daughter of the Deep.
Ana Dakkar is about to finish her freshman year at Harding-Pencroft Academy. It is a five-year academy specializing in marine science. She, and her nineteen classmates, are about to begin their freshmen trials. Harding-Pencroft holds its students very high standards. However, before they can take off, the school is destroyed by a series of sonic torpedoes. The remaining students and professors of Harding-Pencroft regroup aboard their yacht the Varuna. Ana discovers several major revelations. Jules Verne’s novels
20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and
The Mysterious Island were based on actual events. Captain Nemo was indeed a real person, and Ana is his direct descendant. In fact, the whole point of Harding-Pencroft Academy is to safeguard Nemo’s legacy and technology. Their next stop is Lincoln Island, the final resting place of Nemo and the
Nautilus. But danger lurks around every corner as the survivors of Harding-Pencroft are hunted by their old rivals: Land Academy.
Well, it looks like we’re back sooner than I expected. I thought we’d be back for that Irish Mythology book Rick said he was planning. However, that seems to have been put on the back-burner.
Daughter of the Deep apparently has been a long time coming. Way back in 2009, Disney executives asked Rick what Disney property he would want to write a book based on. It could be anything he wanted. He chose
20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, as the 1954 film adaptation is one of his favorite movies. Technically, Disney only owns the rights to the movie, not the original book. The original Verne novel has long since slipped into the public domain. I’m tempted to think that Rick was, at least somewhat, trolling the executives.
I actually went back and watched the 1954 movie adaptation of
20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. I agree with Rick here. The movie is, I must say, a truly underrated gem among live-action Disney films. In fact, I might even give it its own review at some point. Now, the movie does take some liberties with the source material. Though, personally, I’d say that was to its benefit, as it made for a more engaging story that worked better in film. Verne was known for doing a lot of research with his novels, and often devoted entire paragraphs to explaining the science in detail. Unfortunately, this does make for a rather dry reading experience. I’ve heard Verne works better in the original French, but that is a language I do not speak. Amusingly, students at Harding-Pencroft are required to read
20,000 Leagues Under the Seaand
The Mysterious Island. Ana found them both to be a bit dry for her taste. I myself enjoyed
The Mysterious Islandslightly more than
20,000 Leagues, but it still suffered from many of the same issues.
I’ve heard a few people wonder what it might be like if Rick Riordan were to write a science fiction novel. Well, we now have our answer. We know more about the surface of the Moon than we do our own deep oceans. Twelve people have walked on the surface of the Moon, but only two have ever been to the bottom of the Marianas Trench. Ocean-based science fiction is still comparatively rare compared to space-based or terrestrial-based science fiction. So, I’m glad to see that
Daughter of the Deep tapped into some of the vast potential of ocean-based science fiction.
Now, I should probably clarify that
Daughter of the Deep is set outside of the Riordanverse. Rick has confirmed that it takes place in its own self-contained world. So, don’t expect to see any cameos from Percy, Annabeth, or any other Riordanverse characters. Still, it is similar enough in terms of style to a typical Riordanverse novel, and thus, I’ve chosen to include it as part of the retrospective.
Speaking of style, let’s begin there. Rick has said he took a film writing course before he wrote
Daughter of the Deep. That is very apparent in how the prose itself is written. It reads very much like a movie script. The narration is presented in first-person present tense. This helps add to the sense of action and urgency as the plot movies along. The pacing also feels very much like what you might find in a movie. We got a lot of action scenes in quick succession. We get the usual info dumps, but we don’t really take as much time for introspection. As we’ll discuss a bit later, this lack of introspection was very much to the book’s detriment. I’m willing to bet that all this is very much by design. Daughter of the Deep is being adapted into a movie on Disney+. In fact, the movie was announced even before the book came out. So, it certainly feels like Rick wrote
Daughter of the Deep with an eye towards the movie adaption.
I would have liked if we had gotten to explore Harding-Pencroft Academy a bit more before it got destroyed. What brief glimpses we do see are utterly fascinating. The students are all decided into four different houses based on their area of study. Yeah, they’ve heard all the
Harry Potter jokes plenty of times. Though, personally, when I saw the initials HP in an ocean-themed book, I briefly wondered if Rick Riordan was going to tackle the Lovecraft Mythos. Back on topic, the houses are Dolphin, Shark, Cephalopod, and Orca. Dolphin focuses on communications, exploration, cryptography, and counterintelligence. Shark handles command, combat, weapons systems, logistics. Cephalopod deals with engineering, applied mechanics, innovation, and defensive systems. Orca is all about medicine, psychology, education, marine biology, and communal memory. If you’re wondering about that last one, it basically means the history of Harding-Pencroft and Captain Nemo.
One of the things I appreciated was that each of the four main characters is from a different house. One of my gripes about
Harry Potter is that pretty much all the important characters come from Gryffindor. Well, unless they’re a villain, and come from Slytherin. Ravenclaw had Luna and Cho, I guess, but Hufflepuff got the short end of the stick for sure. Getting back on track, having the four main protagonists of
Daughter of the Deep be from different houses provided a theme that everyone has something unique to bring to the table. You can also see it as advocating for multiculturalism, but without being preachy about it. However, I do have on criticism. House Orca needed a better name. Orcas are a type of dolphin, the largest, in fact. We’ve got representatives for mammals, fish, and mollusks. How’s about giving some love to the reptiles? Personally, I would have named them House Sea Turtle instead. Or failing that, show some love to the echinoderms, and name them House Seastar. House Sea Cucumber would also work. Don’t give me that look! Sea cucumbers are noble animals and wonders of nature.
I do wish that we’d gotten to see more of Harding-Pencroft before it was destroyed. What brief glimpses we do get are utterly fascinating. As you might expect, they have quite an expansive aquarium full marine creatures. Upperclassmen train in submarine simulations using full-size mock-up submarines submerged in deep pools. However, the most fascinating class is one where students get to consider, and theorize, about the ways technology and science might have developed had history gone differently. As a major fan of alternate history I have but one thing to say: sign me up now! Well, its actually there as a way to slowly ease the students into learning the truth about Captain Nemo and his inventions. Still, sounds like a very fun class to take. I also liked how the various sections of the school are named after famous ocean explorers. There’s one part named after the Chinese navigator Zheng He, and one named after the polar explorer Ernest Shackleton.
I thought all of the diving scenes were particularly well-written. Rick Riordan has a true passion for scuba diving. This really shines through during the diving scenes. I also really like how the diving suits all use jet-propulsion that mimics the siphons of cephalopods. That was a really creative touch.
Okay, let’s talk about the characters. Ana is the protagonist, but I want to save her for last. We’ll start with her roommates, and best friends, Nelinha and Ester. Nelinha da Silva grew up in an orphanage in Rio de Janeiro, but got to attend Harding-Pencroft on a scholarship. She’s also the closest the series gets to referencing
Percy Jackson and the Olympians. I can best describe Nelinha as what would happen if Charles Beckendorf and Silena Beauregard were to have a kid. And, you know, if they were still alive. She’s a complete mechanical genius, and geeks out over machines and engine parts. She’s a member of House Cephalopod, naturally. However, she is also obsessed with fashion, and always makes sure to look her best at all times. Nelinha doesn’t just pack outfits, she packs entire wardrobes.
One of my prior complaints about Rick Riordan is that he only seems to know how to write one type of female character. Namely, he seems to believe that being a strong female character means being a tomboy who hates all things girly. So, it was nice to see Nelinha as a course correction on that front. Nelinha being from Brazil is likely a nod to how popular Rick Riordan’s books are in Brazil. So, I’m sure Brazilian fans were excited to finally get a Brazilian main character.
On the flipside, we also get Ester Harding. She’s a member of House Orca. She is a blood relative of one of the founders of Harding-Pencroft. She is also the first autistic character in a Rick Riordan book. I’m still bitter about how he wrote a Muslims character before he wrote an autistic character. In the Riordanverse, anyone can be a demigod, unless you’re autistic, it would seem. I had high hopes for Ester. You don’t see autistic girls too often in the media. Riordan has said that he got sensitivity readers to help him with writing characters from different cultural backgrounds. However, it would seem none of them offered insight into autistic people. It almost feels like Riordan watched a couple episodes of
The Good Doctor and was like “I got this!” You know those TikTok clips of that guy having a temper tantrum while shouting “I am a surgeon!” Yeah, that’s
The Good Doctor. It was another show I had high hopes for, but fell back on stereotyping autistic people. Don’t get me started on my problems with
The Good Doctor, we’ll be here all day.
Anyway, Ester displays a number of stereotypical traits. She yo-yos between being basically non-verbal, and shouting at the top of her lungs. She does this all in a robotic monotone voice. In contrast to Nelinha, Ester has basically no fashion sense, and seems to be going for the long-lost daughter of Albert Einstein look. Ester also doesn’t have much in the way of common sense, and though it never comes up, she’s probably Jewish. Not too many gentiles name Ester. She’s got an excellent memory, to the point of being almost eidetic, but that’s somewhat accurate. Well, maybe not eidetic, but most autistic people do often have amazing memories. How do you think I’m about to write these retrospectives?
Ana briefly remarks about how some people claim that autistic people can’t feel love or other emotions, and that Ester proves this isn’t true, due to how empathetic she is. Again, this is true, as autistic people can be quite empathetic. Though, I can’t help but wonder if Disney specially made Rick insert that line to cover their asses. See, this isn’t the first time Disney has tackled autism. There was an episode of
Girl Meets World about how we should all be nice to autistic people. All well and good, but they also claim that autistic people are incapable of experiencing emotions, including love.
Gemini Twain has been assigned as Ana’s bodyguard. He’s a no-nonsense member of House Shark. He’s also a member of the Church of Jesus Christ and Latter Day Saints. This is certainly an interesting choice, as Gemini is also Black. Historically, Mormons haven’t exactly gotten along well with Black people. Or Native Americans, or Polynesians, or…well, pretty much anybody who isn’t White. The most infamous instance was when Mormon schools refused to desegregate. The American government threatened to revoke their tax exemption status, but wouldn’t you know it, Mormon God rather conveniently changed his mind about Black people. Though, Gemini’s faith doesn’t really come up that much. He doesn’t like swearing or taking the lord’s name in vein, and he mentions his grandma raised him and his brother in the LDS church, but that’s about it. Well, he did get into a minor scuffle with Nelinha. Gemini’s brother went on his mission trip to Brazil, and Gemini assumed Nelinha would know his brother, because she’s from Brazil.
Well, nice touch having one of the non-White characters be flawed enough to be accidentally racist. I remember back in
The Hammer of Thor retrospective when I said, paraphrased, “A Muslim demigod? What’s next, a Mormon demigod?” I have on occasion wondered if Rick Riordan reads these retrospectives. Probably a long shot, but you never know.
Technically, there is a fifth main character: the
Nautilusitself. It took until about halfway through the book before the
Nautilus showed up. Yeah, this book has some pacing issues. The Nautilus has what can best be described as an artificial intelligence system. Also, apparently it also includes some organic components. As you might imagine, it is extremely untrustworthy of anyone who isn’t a blood relative of Prince Dakkar, aka Captain Nemo. So, Ana’s biometrics are key to unlocking the Nautilus.
Unfortunately, the
Nautilus also highlights one of the issues I had with the book. Apparently, every major invention of the 20th Century was a result of Harding-Pencroft discreetly releasing them to the public. That, or Land Institute stealing them. This caused
Daughter of the Deep to evoke the Great Man Theory of History. The theory goes that society gets stuck in ruts until a great man, and it’s always a man, shakes up the status quo and moves the world forward. This view has largely fallen out of favor with mainstream historians. Most historians emphasis how the changes were put into motion, often by complex chains of influences, long before the supposedly great men came about.
You do kind of get this with the main Riordanverse, where pretty much anyone who did anything was either a demigod or a magician. However, that was softened by just how many demigods and magicians there were throughout history. So, it felt more like a team-effort. By contrast, Daughter of the Deep gave us a single scientific übermensch who, apparently, leapfrogged from steam-power to cold fusion reactors. Now, granted, this is also true of Nemo in
20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. Still, maybe Rick shouldn’t have depicted Nemo in such a lock, stock, and barrel sort of way.
And that segues into my next point. Harding-Pencroft is deathly afraid of letting the general public get access to Nemo’s technology. They only release technology sparingly, and only when they feel humanity has earned it. Uh, and what metric do they use to determine how worthy humanity is? Beats me, the book offers no details. The adults all make a big deal about how corporations would try to monopolize Nemo’s technology, but nobody ever suggests releasing it as open-source tech. Well, I know the real reason for that. There’s no way that Disney, the poster boy for copyright abuse, is going to be advocating for open-source. A particularly facepalm worthy moment is that fact that Harding-Pencroft refuses to release cold fusion technology…despite climate change being a serious issue! The book would have you believe Harding-Pencroft are the good guys. However, I’m tempted to think Land Institute had a point about Harding-Pencroft being corrupt and selfish.
Hey, wait a minute. Harding-Pencroft is a secretive organization that is very selective of its membership. It trains its students so that, effectively, they’re cut-off from the outside world. They indoctrinate their students from a young age into their views. They have charismatic leaders and founders. Yikes, I hope the cafeteria never served Kool-Aid! Harding-Pencroft is a cult!
It would seem that Harding-Pencroft has something akin to the Prime Detective from
Star Trek. There has been a lot of debate about the morality of the Prime Detective. The main thinking seems to be don’t give advanced weaponry to civilizations that aren’t morally mature.
The Original Seriesalso says that it is okay to break the Prime Directive if a planet is in imminent danger. Contrast this with
Next Generation, where one episode has Captain Picard dithering about if he should save a planet, even if it break the Prime Directive. Of course, the worst offender was
Voyager. It had an episode where the moral was, basically, don’t save a baby trapped in a burning car, or else the baby will grow-up to be Hitler. Yeah, the Prime Directive kind of devolved into an immoral religious dogma as
Star Trek went on.
Point is, Harding-Pencroft’s Prime Directive seems to lean towards that of the later Star Trek entries. Apparently, screw the planet, we need to keep the tech away from corporations! The irony of Disney railing against corporations is so thick you can practically cut it with a machete. Also, if the concern is that the corporations would hoard stuff like the cure for cancer, well, how’s that any different than what Harding-Pencroft is doing?
Much is made about how Ana must choose to reconcile both the good and the bad of Nemo’s legacy. However, nothing really comes of this. We don’t see her seriously debate or challenge Harding-Pencroft and Land Institute’s views of Nemo. In fact, she gets indoctrinated into Harding-Pencroft’s views pretty quickly. It would have been a great opportunity to show Nemo’s complexity, not just tell us about it. How many innocent lives did he take in his quest for vengeance? Should he have shared his technology with the oppressed peoples chafing under the yoke of colonialism? Is it possible that Land Institute has some valid points, and that Harding-Pencroft has lost its way? All excellent questions that sadly go unanswered.
As for why that is, it ties into the biggest problem I have with
Daughter of the Deep. Overall, it feels like merely the novelization of the yet to be produced movie. I was hoping that the novel would be able to stand on its own merits. However, Riordan clearly wrote it so that the adoption process would be streamlined. Debating ethics might not translate to film. Though, it could work in the hands of a competent scriptwriter.
I feel this streamlining was ultimately to the novel’s determent. I certainly didn’t hate
Daughter of the Deep. It had plenty of the action and adventure you’d expect from a Rick Riordan novel. However, for every thing I liked, there was almost always something else I didn’t like. It is ironic that Rick claims he spent years working on
Daughter of the Deep. It overall feels like it was yanked out of the oven before it had a chance to bake properly. Then again, he also claims to have gotten the idea for
Magnus Chase before he wrote
Percy Jackson, and look how that turned out.
The audiobook is narrated by Soneela Nankani. She’s the narrator for the
Aru Shah audiobooks. Personally, I wasn’t too thrilled when I saw that Soneela would be narrating. However, she gave a fairly decent performance. She voiced Ester in a rather stereotypical way, like she was imitating Sean from
The Good Doctor, but that was the only true sour note. Speaking of music, the audiobook is filled with music. There’s lots of musical cues throughout the audiobook. Scenes of wonder and whimsy have inspirational music, action scenes have exciting music. There’s a scene where Ana plays a pipe organ aboard the
Nautilus, and we actually get to hear it. I thought that was a really nice touch.
Now, let’s analyze the cover. This is a nice looking cover. The undersea landscape is bright and vibrant. We see Ana and Gemini in their divining suits. Their faces are clear and unobscured. The Rick Riordan Presents books goes with this approach as well. Something about it being important for minority kids to see themselves clearly represented on book covers. We also see the Nautilus in the background, along with a giant octopus.
So,
Daughter of the Deep has a lot of potential, and I certainly wouldn’t mind a sequel. However, there’s a lot of room for improvement. It needed to stand on its own merits, not just be the dry run for the movie script. Still, it's lightyears better than our next port of call. Next time, we’re tackling
The Sun and The Star. The claws are coming out, and I’m prepared to fully eviscerate Mark Oshiro’s glorified self-insert fanfic.

I've just binged season 10 and i am absolutely gutted there is no reunion!! What happened with camille and Ben? What's allissa up to now? Did Tyler come out to his parents? Is ross and katie over or is ross somewhere in the world having multiple orgys🤣? Is it really Rachel's last time as a yacht chef? Will we see captain Lee again?
SO. MANY. UNANSWERED. QUESTIONS.
I did a Google search and found out that caption Lee was mad captain sandy didn't tell him about firing 2 crew members which I thought was a bit odd. If u was in the hospital and having surgery I would have wanted to be told but wouldn't have been bothered when...like as long as she told him at some point (which she did) I'm sure that's no biggie she was looking after the boat after all? I'm still on the fence about sandy I didn't like the way she treated the interior but it did seem that Fraser and the team were alot more relaxed and efficient once the firings happened.
So has anyone got any updates for me?

2023.06.06 04:52 campbejk94 What famous (or would-later-be-famous) passengers do you know of?
When liners met disaster (cough,
Titanic, cough) anyone on them who was well-known was guaranteed a lot of publicity, although it likely didn't help your image or career much if you were dead.
When it was the only way to travel, the famous travelled on liners all the time, but didn't need to succumb to hypothermia or some other gruesome cause just to get their names in the papers. The press was usually there when liners (at least the most luxurious ones) departed or arrived to document the comings and goings of the rich and famous, proving that
paparazzi are not a modern invention. Newspapers would list all the first class passengers arriving.
Sometimes public figures might take one of the lesser-known ships, maybe even to avoid the public eye. And of course some liners transported people who later became famous, but who got clean away with it because nobody knew who they were yet.
Wikipedia articles on liners are an interesting source for trivia like this. Someone who has taken the trouble to research and write a good article and has interest in a ship, or a line, will sometimes uncover some interesting factoid, and boom, thanks to the miracle of the internet, there it is for all to read. The articles on the legendary superliners contain lots of information about who in the Who's Who travelled on them, and when. And of course the story of Charles Dickens' utter disenchantment with Cunard's
Britannia is now the stuff of legend. That's the low hanging fruit in the orchard.
What cases of the famous (or would-later-be-famous) travelling on specific ships that might not even be known of today (outside the liner enthusiast community) are you aware of? Here are a few I found:
- Winston Churchill when a twenty-year-old junior officer, travelled to and from America on Cunard's Etruria in 1895 en route to Cuba to observe the locals' fight to free themselves from Spanish rule.
- Mark Twain travelled from Australia to Ceylon (modern day Sri Lanka) on P&O's Oceana in 1895.
- King George V and Queen Mary, while still the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall, used Orient Line's Ophir as a royal yacht for a tour of the British Empire in 1901 (the centrepiece of which was their attendance at the opening of Australia's first federal parliament in Melbourne). The tour lasted from February to November.
- Douglas Fairbanks, Sr. and Mary Pickford (possibly the first Hollywood "power couple") travelled on Red Star Line's Lapland on their European honeymoon in 1920. They might have preferred one of the big first-class liners, but at the time Mauretania, Aquitania, and Olympic were probably all undergoing postwar refits and if you wanted to travel, you had to take what was going. Fairbanks would also later travel on Belgenland.
- Isaac Asimov (at the age of three, before he became Sir Isaac) immigrated to the United States with his family on RMS Baltic in 1923.
- Albert Einstein liked Red Star ships, travelling on Lapland and Belgenland (possibly because Antwerp was closer to where he worked and lived in Stuttgart than Hamburg or Bremen was). He also travelled to New York on Holland America's Rotterdam in 1921, to attend a World Zionist Organization conference. He was returning to Europe on Belgenland in 1933 when he received word of the ascension to power of the Nazi Party in Germany, and instead of returning to his home (which had already been seized), he went to London from Antwerp to seek refuge.
- Eleanor Roosevelt with two of her sons and some friends returned from Europe on Belgenland in 1929. Her husband, then Governor of New York State, met the ship with a motorcycle escort.
- The Prince of Wales, the future King Edward VIII, crossed the Atlantic on Berengaria for a mostly unofficial visit to the US and Canada in the mid-1920s, and returned on Olympic (this is from The Only Way to Cross, by John Maxtone-Graham). HRH also used Canadian Pacific ships (notably Empress of Australia) for visits to his Canadian property as well.
- King George VI and Queen Elizabeth travelled to Canada on Empress of Australia for the 1939 Royal Tour of Canada, also making an official visit to the United States, and returned on Empress of Britain.
- Eddie van Halen emigrated to America with his family as a boy on Holland America Line's Rijndam.
- George Bernard Shaw travelled extensively, and treated himself and his wife to a round-the-world cruise on Canadian Pacific's Empress of Britain in December 1932-April 1933, and New Zealand the following year. They also sailed to South Africa. Shaw spent much time working on his writing during long voyages.
- Henry Ford made a voyage to Europe on Majestic in 1928, although as a teetotaler he probably would have been just as happy on Leviathan.
- Grace Kelly travelled on the Constitution from New York to Monaco for her marriage to Prince Rainier in 1956.
- Former President Harry S Truman and his wife, Bess, travelled on the Constitution returning from a European trip in 1958.

2023.06.05 23:29 Beautiful_Green_1660 Why Kraterocracy is based
Folks, let me tell you about a wild idea that will blow your mind faster than chemtrails and lizard people combined. I'm talking about kraterocracy, the absolute best system the world has never known! Now, picture this: a government run by the rich and powerful, where money talks louder than a Bilderberg meeting. Buckle up, because we're diving deep into this mind-bending rabbit hole.
In kraterocracy, forget about "one person, one vote." It's all about "one dollar, one vote." You see, wealth equals wisdom, and who needs the pesky opinions of the average Joe when you have a yacht-sized bank account? It's like Monopoly, but instead of landing on Park Place, you land in the halls of power.
Imagine a world where billionaires reign supreme, where economic moguls duke it out with diamond-encrusted fists for control. Forget about politicians; we'd have CEOs, Wall Street tycoons, and eccentric billionaires pulling the strings. Every decision would be based on the golden rule: "Those who have the gold make the rules."
Sure, it might sound crazy, but think about it: who better to lead than those who already have more money than they know what to do with? They could fund moon bases, build cities in the clouds, and even create a new currency made of solid gold. The possibilities are as endless as the receipts they hide in offshore accounts.
But wait, there's more! In this wacky world of kraterocracy, we'd have the most spectacular reality TV show ever created: "Survivor: The Billionaire Edition." Watch as ruthless business magnates battle it out for supremacy, with challenges like evading tax audits and avoiding paparazzi. Who needs Netflix when you have front-row seats to the glitz and glamour of the world's wealthiest?

2023.06.05 21:27 GirlOnreddit88 how can i support my (20f) boyfriend (20m) going through financial problems?
i (20f) have been with my boyfriend (20m) for about a year and a half now. we met at our college during our first semester of freshman year and have been together ever since (starting our junior year soon.)
overall, we have a very good and healthy relationship. we have a lot of mutual love and respect for each other, and are generally very communicative with each other. we have never really had any big fights or issues. i’m so so lucky to have this wonderful guy in my life.
for some background on us, i come from a very well off family. both of my parents work and make good money. we aren’t yacht and uber designer rich, but we’ve always been comfortable (we take a nice vacation most years, have a nice house, etc, but don’t get to blow our money on whatever we want whenever we please.) my parents have been married for 25+ years and have put my sister and i through college with a mix of saved money and student loans. so overall very stable and comfortable. i am fully aware of how privileged i am and very grateful for the life that my parents have been able to give me and my sister.
for my boyfriend, he had a very unstable childhood, and was raised by his single mom for the first 8ish years of his life. his mom eventually married, and his life has become a lot more stable since then. however, his mom doesn’t work, as she stays home to take care of my boyfriends half brother. for his family, money has always been relatively tight. they were saving for a bigger house, but his mom has had a lot of medical issues recently, and a lot of the money they had saved had to go towards medicine, surgery, etc. my boyfriend works during breaks and when he’s home for the summer, as he wants to minimize the financial burden on his family. his college and housing is paid for by the military, as well as general medical care. however, he pays for most other things. he pays for his car and all of the associated expenses, and pretty much anything that he wants/stuff that isn’t absolutely necessary.
my parents insist that i don’t work during the school year, and they pay for pretty much everything for me. i don’t abuse that privilege, and once i have a job i plan on giving back to them in every way i can.
so there’s a lot of contrast. and on top of his situation, he’s been very unlucky with his car over the past few months. he got his car inspected today, and they said he has to spend $500 and get his tires changed, which i know is a big blow to him. he almost started crying on the phone today, saying that he was having such a good day and it just got ruined and he was starting to save up a solid amount of money. he really just never gets a break. it hurts me to watch, so i truly can’t imagine what he’s feeling. he watches all of his friends (myself included) get all of these things taken care of for them by their parents as nothing more than a minor inconvenience.
i try my best to comfort him, but i can’t help but feel a sense of guilt, as my comforting really doesn’t make anything better. from my own savings, i really don’t have a significant amount of money to give him, and even if i could (unless i was yacht rich) i doubt he would even accept it. he is truly one of the kindest, strongest, and most amazing people i know. he deserves everything good that this world has to offer, but it just doesn’t happen for him. he works really hard in school, and i know he has the potential to do really well coming out of school, but that’s still another two years away.
i really just need advice on how to help him or comfort him in any way. all advice is appreciated. and please don’t leave hateful comments; i don’t have any control over either of the hands we were dealt in life.

2023.06.05 20:50 ZhaoJianMu Blackstone
Blackstone:
Genres: spy thriller, espionage, scifi, military, supernatural
21 missions in 21 different places around the world. Her first mission is not really a mission as she is just a regular genius high school kid graduating at 16. Last spring break of her senior and final year of high school and she just wants to have fun in Cancun Mexico, just like everyone else, but something seriously goes wrong. It will be the last time she gets to see her friends alive. From this point on everything seems to go wrong and she just has to do whatever it takes to survive. To write this or prepare myself to write this, I watched all of the James Bond movies in order, Tomb Raider movies, Mission Impossible, Jason Bourne, Pain Killer Jane, Atomic Blonde and various others. All of the elements of this genre I broke down to its essential components and this book and the next book is what I came up with. Jessica Blackstone with her Lollipop martini.
Non-stop action from beginning to end for every mission. Each mission leads into the next mission. Mission two is her signing on to the Marine Corps for boot camp and basically it is mostly boot camp. Whistler British Colombia is where she is for her 3rd mission and it is super intense with insane snowboarding. The 4th mission brings you up to Mount Everest where her mission is to recover a Marine's body from the death zone, which is above 26,000 feet. Mission five she is in Hawaii on a surfing mission, or rather the surfing championship is part of the mission. That leads her to her mission in Venezuela where she crashes a plane. She faces hidden dangers and wakes up in Japan and is there for a time.
Mission eight she has to protect a singer in Blue Mountain, Collingwood. Her next mission is in Calgary, Alberta undercover at the Calgary Stampede as a ranch hand. Next mission is at Dragon Con (but most of this is written pre-pandemic so the numbers may not be correct although the date and time has not happened as all this starts March Break Cancun 2036). Jessica cosplays undercover while working out at the Gold Gym. Mission 11 is filled with motorcycle antics and camping in the beautiful Grand Canyon along the Colorado River. In Miami, Jessica goes undercover at a Yacht club.
Training in Quantico takes up mission 13. Mission 14 Jessica does a tour of duty in Syria. In mission 15 Jessica is in Area 51 and learns about Area 49. Next she is on a runway in Paris as a model for an undercover mission. Mission 17 is at a Beerfest in Amsterdam. Mardi Gras New Orleans is her next mission as a micro dot might be hidden in a bead, so she has to play the beads game to acquire it. Mission 19 takes Jessica to Siberia. Mission 20 is in Antarctica. Las Vegas, mission 21 with the LAPD, ends the missions of the book, Blackstone.

2023.06.05 20:21 Tight_Cod3691 Best resort for young adults without kids?
My boyfriend and I (21 y/o) are planning a trip to Disney World to celebrate his graduation. I have only been briefly and he has never been. We have been looking into different resorts and want to get the best value and save as much money as possible (I know, tough to do at Disney.) We do not have any kids. We have been looking into the All-Star resorts as well as Pop Century, but want to know if it would be enjoyable for just two adults. If not, would it be worth it to splurge on Swan and Dolphin or Yacht Club? Thanks in advance Disney Nation!
P.S.-- Any other advice for young adult first timers is much appreciated!!!

2023.06.05 07:11 iamtonimorrison Issues with wealth in friendships
This is going to sound like a humble brag but it's really not:
I'm a late twenties guy who is actually a trans man but I pass so well that being trans is now a joke. Everyone thinks I'm a dude.
I grew up in other countries, socializing with their elite classes, and have been to close to 40 countries so am well traveled. My parents are very well off financially. Ever since my dad got a really nice job (which basically saved the family) I've had issues in friendships. I started buying nicer clothes, getting nice watches, jewelry, etc. Friends started to notice this and backed off.
I'm also Ivy League educated and plan on going to another Ivy for grad school.
Now I'm 28 and I feel like most of the friendships around me are less real and real. I only have a couple of really close friends who actually care about me. Most of my other "friends" don't give a rat's ass about me.
My ex-wife always joked that I walk around like a really rich guy who owns a yacht and that's how I inadvertently carry myself. But the irony is I don't have some fancy job at Goldman Sachs. In fact I struggle to find good jobs.
My friends come from significantly less wealth. Every time I meet a rich person we get along--my ex wife also used to joke that rich people love me.
I'm looking for real friendships but I worry that if I try and become friends with someone new it just won't work out. I guess I'm looking for an outside opinion. This sounds like a first world problem and it certainly is. I don't think going to Yale helped at all in my quest to be down to earth.
Or maybe I just need to make rich friends. But I don't have anywhere near the amount of money they would have.
Any input? I know what it's like to be friends with people a class above me because as a child I socialized with the children of oligarchs, and obviously my family didn't have billions (or millions back then). But I learned to just suck up the class differences and we got along just fine.
