2023.04.01 22:51 Philomorph How to run a Win 3.1 game that seems to include a Windows install?

I'm new to Launchbox, and after looking through the videos linked in the tutorial page I couldn't find an answer. If I missed it please point me in the right direction!
I downloaded "Tetris Classic" for Windows from an abandonware site, but the ZIP file seems to contain a full Win 3.1 install, including Soundblaster drivers, etc, as well as Tetris. It doesn't appear to be a bootable ISO or anything.
I can't get any of it to run inside Launchbox though. If I try running the Tetris exe it says it has to be run in Windows. If I try and run Win.exe or other things from inside the Win folder, they don't work right. Do I need to go through the process of installing a whole virtual Win 3.1 machine to run it?
I also found a copy of Tetris World that is an ISO, It has a setup.exe that actually ran fine under Win 11 and installed the game. But when I run it, either from within or outside of Launchbox, it opens a window and errors out because it can't load DirectX 7.
Where do I start with these? Any suggestions are welcome!

2023.04.01 22:48 HSudev521 Redoing the DCEU (Again!) focusing on character growth and humanity with a sequel to my Flash pitch

PREVIOUS MOVIE IN THE UNIVERSE- Trinity: The World's Finest
Direct Sequel to The Flash
This is Movie #10 of my ongoing DCEU rewrite that takes inspiration from what we got but makes it more authentic to the ethos of the characters, at least according to me. Sorry it took so long to write this movie. In anticipation of the new DCU, I will be wrapping up my DCEU redone posts as soon as I am done with my Phase 1. We are nearing the end of Chapter 1 of my DCEU rewrite and things are starting to heat up. A direct sequel to my Flash pitch, also directed by Robert Zemeckis. So, without further ado, let's get into:

The Flash II

We start with an establishing action scene. In MONTREAL, metahuman ROSCOE DILLON aka the TOP leads a heist on a bank. As the robbery happens, Roscoe induces vertigo in the people causing them to fall to their knees. He asks the bank teller to get him cash from the vault, when the bank teller presses the silent alarm, Roscoe shoots him. The bullet is about to kill him when all of a sudden, red and yellow blur whizzes into the room. The Bank teller is moved out of the way and safe and the bullet lodges harmlessly in the wall. As the civilians look on, BARRY ALLEN aka the FLASH stands triumphant in a brand-new super-suit. The Flash and the Top engage in a trippy battle . We see Barry’s desire for heroism and his mentality of rushing head long into trouble. Since coming to his own and moving past his guilt in the last movie, he has now replaced it with an unending sense of responsibility. He wants to save everyone so that no kid has to go through the pain that he went through after his mom’s murder. Barry, in this movie, will have to learn that some things are beyond his control and learn to slow down and live his life. Barry is often depicted as the most balanced member of the Justice League, in this movie, he will learn to become that.
On Comms, CISCO RAMON, and CAITLIN FROST guide him through the fight. Barry handcuffs Dillon with a zip tie and leaves him for the law enforcement as Caitlin informs him about a train going off the rails in MONTEREY, MEXICO. Barry runs to Monterey and helps evacuate all the people in the train. As he is struggling to move all people, the train comes to a grinding halt as SUPERMAN pushes against the head of the train bringing it to a grinding halt. Barry evacuates the remaining people and shakes hands with Superman. Barry lets him know that he is a big fan. Superman asks him to keep up the good work. Barry nods and is about to ask something but blanks in his starstruck awe. Superman simply smiles and says, “Until next time, Mr. Flash” before doing a quick tongue-in-cheek salute gesture and he flies away. Barry looks up in awe at Superman as he flies away and murmurs, completely star-struck, “Cool..”
Through comms, Barry and Cisco geek out over the former meeting Superman! Caitlin rolls her eyes and DR. HARRISON SLATE chuckles as Cisco complains that Barry did not get Superman to sign his suit. Suddenly, the Star City satellite picks up activity. Cisco lets Barry know that LEONARD SNART aka CAPTAIN COLD and his partner HEATWAVE aka MICK RORY are breaking into NATIONAL BANK in CENTRAL CITY. Barry runs in to stop them but Cold plays into his overzealousness and uses his own run-first-think-later mentality against him as a way to trap him and then escape. Leaving Barry in a block of supercooled solid, Barry struggles to escape it, cops surround the building. The CCPD Chief, DAVID SINGH asks ‘The Flash’ to step out and surrender even as JOE WEST tries to reason to Singh that the Flash is on their side. Singh says that ever since the speedster has arrived on the scene things have been more and more complicated. Barry tries to vibrate to generate enough electricity and heat to melt the ice. Finally, just before Singh is about to unmask Barry, he is able to generate the electricity and an electricity shock is sent into the block that melts the ice and frees Barry. Barry runs away, barely escaping law enforcement.
# The Flash: Into the SpeedForce
Barry arrives late at his job at Keystone PD as their new CSI. He holds 2 coffee cups. He spills some of it as he climbs up the stairs, hurriedly greeting everyone, He gets to the annex where his lab is. He is met by the other CSI working there, AUGUST HEART. Barry hands one of the coffees to August. Heart and Barry talk for a bit as they get called to a crime scene. They arrive at MERCURY LABS, a private research lab run by Stagg Industries. There, Barry meets DET. PATTY SPIVOT, a young recruit who quickly rose through the ranks. Barry and Patty have instant chemistry. They laugh and joke while solving the case together. Barry asks Patty about what was stolen. Patty tells Barry that the object stolen was an circuit stabilizer made of a Lithium-Eternium alloy, the latter being an extremely rare Kandahqi metal. Barry says that he thought there was barely any Eternium left in the world. Patty says that that is probably why the board was stolen. Barry looks around but he deduces that the robbery does not appear to have been committed for financial gain. There were other Eternium based chips there that weren’t stolen. Patty theorizes that maybe the burglar panicked and escaped, but Barry doubts that. Barry looks at the CCTV footage and finds nothing. It was there one second. And then it was gone. He asks Patty to slow down the video. As she does, he barely catches a glimpse of a yellow blur and a weight sinks in the pit of his stomach. Patty asks if he is okay. But before he can respond, they get a call from August. August was sent to investigate another robbery on the other end of town in an illegal underground street racing outfit. Heart mentions that one of the people there were killed. This shocks Patty and Barry. They ask if there were any evidence. August shakes his head. Then looking kind of unsure, he adds that there was a witness, however, but they won’t be able to believe what that young man has to say, he is probably traumatized and so not making any sense.
Barry and Patty arrive at the scene as August is still clearing out the scene. Barry walks up to the young boy- a shock of red hair and freckles. A kind smile. But a completely abrasive attitude. Barry talks to the boy. He tells Barry that his name is WALLACE but his friends just calls him Wally. Barry calls him Wally which the boy immediately cuts off because Barry is not his friend. Shaking it off, Barry asks the kid what he saw. He hesitates before saying that he thinks he saw something or someone like the Flash…“a speedster moving faster than sound…except-.” Before Wallace can complete, Barry finishes the sentence, “except he was yellow and red.” August and Patty look at Barry, eyebrows raised in intrigue. Barry asks what was stolen. Wallace says that the speedster stole a new mix of liquid kryptonite and nitromethane. Barry asks who produces that mix and Wallace retorts saying that he isn’t a snitch.
Cut to STAR Labs in Central City. Cisco, Caitlin, IRIS WEST, MALCOLM THAWNE and Joe discuss the situation with Barry when Dr. Slate arrives. Barry’s mental health is in ruin. He was clearly working on moving forward from his survivor’s guilt and leaving his mother’s death in the past. But with her killer back, Barry is living his nightmare. They discuss the Mercury Lab break in with Slate. Slate explains Mercury Labs in Keystone City and S.T.A.R. Labs in Central City were rivals until the particle accelerator accident crippled S.T.A.R. Labs. Since then, Mercury Labs has been working on a project involving tachyon particles that use Eternium-based Microboards and the team deduces this is the Man in the Yellow suit's target. They wonder what the man might be building. Cisco opines out loud that Eternium is a good conductor of kinetic energy and that this could be related to the speedforce since the man is a speedster. Mal asks if he is a speedster then why would he need a speed device.
Barry sits alone ruminating on all that is happening when Iris comes and sits next to him. Iris asks him what is bothering him. Barry says that he feels blindsided. Iris encourages him to do what he is best at. Barry thinks she is talking about his superpowers. But Iris corrects him and tells him to use his CSI skills.
Barry races to Keystone PD. He reassembles his old conspiracy board from his mother’s murder. He places new information and old and tries to piece together what the man in the yellow suit is building.
Meanwhile, Iris and Mal have dinner where they talk about what Barry is going through. Mal talks about the kinship he feels with Barry having grown up in an orphanage. He then mentions how he always wondered why Iris chose him over Barry given the long bond between them. Iris says that Barry was always so occupied with his past, he never even gave the future a chance. But that is not the case with Mal. He always thinks about the future.
Cut to KCPD. Barry is asleep on a pile of papers when Patty walks in. She asks Barry what is happening. He tells her part of the truth without giving away that he is the Flash. He talks about his mother’s murder and how he thought he was insane for years until the Flash showed up on the scene. Seeing the Flash Barry realized that speedsters like that are possible. He thinks the new mystery speedster is the same one who killed his mom. Barry and Patty talk and start piecing stuff together to try and make sense of the different “robberies” . They eventually figure out that all these parts are parts that were used by SAMANTHA SCUDDER to build her experimental quantum device. Patty asks Barry about the device, since he was the CSI that handled the case. Barry says that he found nothing of interest, brushing aside the question. Patty can feel Barry hiding something which annoys her a little. Barry excuses himself and heads to the STAR Labs.
At STAR Labs, Barry discusses with Cisco, Caitlin and Slate. They realize that the man in yellow wants to combine a tachyon generator with Samantha Scudder’s quantum portal device. Slate says that together, hypothetically, it can help someone travel in time. They realize his plan. Cisco runs diagnostics and says that the only piece missing is a frequency stabilizer of which there exists only one. In the Central City Mercury labs. Barry races to Mercury Labs.
At Mercury Labs, a physicist is going about his daily systems checks when a speedster in yellow comes and kills several guards. Luckily the physicist locks himself with the tachyon device in a quantum flux chamber. The yellow speedster attempts to get inside the chamber but fails. Barry arrives just as the man in yellow sends a speedforce lightning at the glass. Barry tries to stop him, but Barry gets tossed aside. The liquids in the room start levitating and windows crack as the two speedsters duke it out. Barry lets loose and chases the other speedster who is faster than ever. Barry demands answers for his mother's murder but the man in the yellow suit taunts him, that he will have to catch him first and speeds off again. The two end up in a stadium and start fighting. Man in the Yellow Suit taunts Barry and says that he will wipe Barry out as well as everyone who knows his secret. He says Barry shouldn’t have told his secret to friends and that they will die because of him. Before leaving, he tells Barry it is his destiny to lose to him, just as it was also destiny for Barry's mother to die that night. He says that in two days’ time, all his plans will finally come to fruition and nothing Barry does can stop him. By the time Cisco, Caitlin and Mal (whom they called) arrive at the stadium, Barry is clutching his knee and crying.
Next day, Barry goes to visit his father, HENRY ALLEN and confesses that he finally found the man who murdered Nora, but he got away, twice. Distraught, he tells his father it is now his fault that he is stuck behind bars. Henry tells him not to blame himself; that the murder has dominated Barry's life for fourteen years and he hasn't been able to truly lead his own life. Henry has also worked out that Barry is in love with Iris but never told her. Barry tells him that it doesn’t matter because she is with Mal. And he is starting to like Patty. He says that he is afraid he might screw even that up. He tells his son not to let the killer take any more of his life from him.
Exhausted, Barry goes to a bar and tries to get drunk, but he cannot be due to his high metabolism. Patty, who was at the bar, sees Barry and approaches him. The two of them talk and Barry talks about how conflicted and confused he is. Without going into details about his situation, he explains his emotions to her. Patty empathizes and gives him some advice. Barry and Patty’s heart to heart leads to them sleeping together.
Barry wakes up in the morning to a sleeping Patty. He sees the Man in the Yellow Suit through the window. Barry is petrified but fights through it and launches into action. Barry runs through town looking for the man in yellow but comes up with nothing.
At the CCPN, Iris is assigned to a new senior reporter ARTURO RODRIGUEZ, a Pulitzer-prize winning journalist and mentor of Lois Lane, who wrote about the “No Man’s Land” crisis in Gotham over twenty years ago and first reported on the Batman. Rodriguez tells Iris about the new expose he is working on- a story on Dr. Harrison Slate. Rodriguez tells Iris about Harrison, saying that 15 years ago Slate lost his wife in a car accident following which Slate turned into a recluse. The only people he has met since then have all ended up dead or missing in a short time. All except two employees at STAR Labs-Cisco, Caitlin; Barry and Barry’s friends including Iris. Recently, Slate met with the former head of Mercury Labs, DR. SIMON STAGG, just months before Stagg’s personal top-secret research was robbed by someone who was evidently a metahuman (Rodriguez reveals that he has a source in the CCPD) and Stagg has been “missing” since. Dr. Christina McGee who took his place in the Lab launched a full-blown search for Stagg, but it was as if he had disappeared from the face of the Earth. Iris calls his theory outlandish, but Rodriguez asks her to just talk to Barry.
Barry makes his way to STAR Labs. He is a beaten man. Exhausted physically and emotionally- stretched to his limits. Slate says that they need to trap the man in yellow. Barry suggests they use the device from Mercury Labs that the villain was unable to procure to create a trap for him. Slate, Caitlin and Joe talk with the head scientist of Mercury Labs, Dr. CHRISTINA MCGEE at the police station, trying to obtain the tachyon experiment as bait. The scientist refuses; believing Slate is looking for an advantage in the market again especially because Mercury is in shambles right now after the last director, Dr. Simon Stagg disappeared a few months ago. But after Barry pleads, she relents and hands over the device.
At S.T.A.R. Labs, Caitlin and Cisco work on the trap- an energy field containment device. Caitlin opens up to Cisco how insane her life has been since Ronnie was vaporized in the particle accelerator accident. He feels a weird deja vu working in the basement lab. She suggests that it might be because the last time either of them were down there was when her late husband, RONNIE RAYMOND was still alive and was tinkering with building the cold fusion reactor. The basement lab used to be his. Cisco reminisces about how much of an inspiration Ronnie was to him. Barry enters and help them build the trap. The three of them talk and we further explore the deep rapport and dynamic between the three friends. Barry opens his heart and shares his thoughts and fears. Cisco and Caitlin support him.
Barry arrives at the KCPD forensic lab late to find Patty waiting for him, working on the robberies. Barry tells her that he figured it out. And he thanks her for her help. She explodes at him in anger. She tells him that he is too busy chasing whatever phantom he is chasing to live a life. He left her this morning without a word. He solved the mystery of the robberies and did not say a word. He apologizes and says that he got preoccupied. She says that he can talk to her when he is ready to be honest and all there. Barry sits there alone as Patty walks out.
At the West residence, Joe is asleep on the couch as Iris looks at all the evidence that Rodriguez gave her regarding Dr. Slate. Mal walks in to find her buried in newspaper clippings and pieces of information. She learns that Barry’s mother’s killer is back and taunting him in order to get some tachyon device. This suddenly clicks for Iris as Stagg was researching a tachyon flux converter when he disappeared. Iris immediately calls Barry, worried.
At Jitters Cafe, Iris tells Barry about Rodriguez’s theory. She tells him that ever since Dr. Slate arrived at Central City, everything changed. Barry needs to make sure Slate isn’t working for the enemy. Barry laughs it off and calls Slate his mentor and like a parent. He convinces Iris that Slate is a good man. Iris asks Barry if he is convinced that he wants to hunt down Man in the Yellow Suit. Barry says yes. Barry spills his heart to her. Tells her how the night his mom died; time stood still for him. He tells her that he has spent every day since then trying to move beyond his guilt and gain a semblance of power over himself. But now that he has that power, he feels emptier than ever before. He can run into a burning building and save thousands of people. But who will save the little boy who had to see his father get wrongly arrested for killing his mother the same night he saw something inexplicable rip her apart. He chased that lightning all his life. Now he has this lightning inside of him. But has no idea what to do with it. Iris touches Barry heart and tells, “But you do. You always have.”
Barry goes back to STAR Labs where the trap has been completed. Cisco tells Barry that Dr. Slate has gone to get amplifiers from the remains of the particle accelerator tube. Barry tells Cisco and Caitlin about what Iris told him regarding Slate. Barry says that Arturo must be mistaken because Slate is a good guy. Cisco talks about his strained relationship with his own family and how Slate and Ronnie were the closest things he had to a father and a brother.
At CCPN, Iris takes all of the research that Rodriguez gave her and goes to tell Rodriguez that his hunch is wrong. Iris finds his office empty. She checks with the desk who say that he never reported for duty. Iris is confused because Rodriguez never misses work. Iris gets worried. She hurries to him home where she finds the place ransacked. She finds a not on his desk with an address for a house in Keystone City.
Meanwhile Slate retrieves amplifiers and comes out of the elevator to find Joe waiting for him in the central atrium of the lab. Joe voices his concern that Barry should stay out of the next stage of the plan as he is too close to this foe, but before he can finish, Barry entering from the other room, dismisses their concerns. Joe says that Mal has recruited a taskforce of loyal SWAT officers to provide them with backup and they will be there any minute. He asks Barry if Cisco and Caitlin are ready, and Barry says that they are. Slate says that then it is time to get started.
The trap is activated, and the tachyon prototype is set in the heart of the trap. They wait for the Man in the Yellow suit. Cisco has been releasing pulses from the tachyon device to draw his attention. Suddenly, the speedster arrives, and Cisco activates the trap; encasing him in a force field. Barry, hiding behind some equipment is paralyzed over seeing his mother’s killer so up close. Slate, Mal, Joe and the task force inspect their captive while Caitlin and Cisco remain in the control room to keep the trap running. In the chamber Joe attempts to interrogate the villain over Nora Allen's murder. The villain ignores him, but speaks to Slate; acting pleased they can meet face to face. The two trade barbs over knowledge of the other. When Slate points out they created the trap based on the villain's similar nature to the Flash, the villain laughs; claiming he is quite the reverse of the hero.
Iris arrives in Keystone and knocks on the door. The door is opened by none other than Patty Spivot.
Back at STAR Labs, suddenly Cisco notes a fluctuation in the barrier and tries to warn Slate; just as the barrier drops for a second. The villain quickly grabs Slate, pulling him into the force field and proceeds to violently beat him. Joe has no option but to break the field generator to save Slate from the attack. The Man in the Yellow suit takes out the task force, flashes over to Mal and stares into his frightened eyes but strangely spares him. The villain then speeds over to Joe and chokes him. Seeing Joe getting choked, snaps Barry out of PTSD and he speeds in and takes The Man in the Yellow suit outside flying out of the building in a tornado of red and yellow electricity, Caitlin and Cisco run outside to watch the fight. The fight is not going well for Barry as the man in yellow continually beats on him. The man in yellow reveals that not only did he kill Barry’s mother but that he is the one who brought the Rogues together. Before he can kill Barry however, he is speed starts sputtering out. Barry is surprised as he sees a second of worry in Reverse Flash eyes. He tells Barry that "their race is not yet done" and that he will see him soon, he then speeds away with the tachyon device. Cisco and Caitlin run over to help Barry.
Patty and Iris talk, both having introduced themselves to each other. Patty immediately recognizes Iris as Barry’s bestfriend. Patty says that Barry has talked a lot about Iris to her. Iris unfortunately cannot reciprocate which makes Patty a bit crestfallen. Patty attempts to change the topic and Iris says that she was following a lead about her lead-reporter Arturo Rodriguez. The name causes Patty to sit up.
She says that a week ago, Barry came to her with some case files about a string of mysterious robberies in Keystone and Central City. She helped Barry put the evidence together and came to the breakthrough that everything stolen were parts that Samantha Scudder used in her mirror device. Even though Barry told her that he caught the culprit, when she called CCPD, they hadn’t. She did not know what Barry was doing, but she had to figure out answers for herself. So she contacted an old college friend Naomi Singh who helped her hack into ARGUS database. She read through the research of Sam Scudder. And realized that all of the original plans for the quantum mirror device was given to her by Dr. Harrison Slate. Not only that, a day after her death, Slate paid off cleaning crews cleaning up the fight scene between Sam and the Flash to get access to her tech. This caused Patty to look further into Slate and realized that Barry was working with Slate. Thinking that Barry was a dirty cop who Slate is controlling, and that’s why Barry lied to her about the arrests, she was making a case against Slate to free Barry. She says that now that Iris knows this what she needs to know is why Iris is working for Slate. Patty pulls a gun on Iris.

2023.04.01 22:48 Suncatch3r Enclosure vs External drive (12-18TB) for plex library through a laptop home setup

I have a windows 10 laptop 24/7 on my LAN and has 2 2tb external drives on it but already running low in storage. So my choices are getting ahard drive and put it in enclosure (i see refurb drives around 150) but then the enclosures can be very expensive and i see a lot of issues in all the reviews from turning off by themsekves and not showing up and having to restart etc. that has made me even more confused.
I also have the option of getting an external drive usb 3, know someone that has 16tb gforce 3 pro new locally for about 200 bucks.
I don't care about RAID, what i do care most about is that the drive doesn't shut off or just malfunction.
Anyways any advice or tips are appreciated

2023.04.01 22:47 ulallume Grub Boot-menu update fails when installing Arch alongside Windows 10

I was using Manjaro alongside Windows 10 for a few weeks. I've been having trouble with getting some programs to run that I have been able to run in the past on Arch so I just figured I'd erase the Manjaro partition and replace it with an Arch partition. What little I did have on /home/ was backed up so I didn't mind wiping the whole partition. This is what I did, starting from a system that was running Windows and Manjaro with no problems (other than problems inside Manjaro):
In Windows, I removed the linux partition in the disk manager. I downloaded the Arch iso, verified the checksum, and flashed it to a thumbdrive with rufus. Because I already did a lot of leg work getting Manjaro installed, I already had things like secure boot and fast start-up disabled as well as setting the hardware clock to UTC as described here.
I booted into the live media and created a new partition using fdisk from the free space on the disk, about 300GB. The newly created partition already had an ext4 signature(??) which was probably from the old Manjaro install. It asked if I wanted to remove it, I declined, and did not format it to ext4 myself.
Following the wiki's article on dual booting, I did not create a new efi partition, which I could see I already had on /dev/sda1. I mounted the new ext4 partition, sda5, to /mnt/ and I mounted /dev/sda1, the efi partition, to /mnt/boot/. Also, in /mnt/boot/EFI/Manjaro, I found a .efi file which I removed along with the now-empty Manjaro directory. There is a Windows directory in EFI which I assume has the analogous boot (grub?) files for Windows.
I continued following the installation instructions on the wiki. When I ran pacstrap -K /mnt base linux linux-firmware I got the following errors:
... (5/5) Updating Grub Boot-menu /usbin/grub-editenv: error: cannot open '//boot/grub/grubenv.new': no such file or directory /usbin/grub-mkconfig: line 263: /boot/grub/grub.cfg.new no such file or directory ...
The only thing that stands out to me in that error is the double forward-slash in //boot/.... This made me think that there was a hitch in mounting /dev/sda1/ to /mnt/boot/.
I re-read the dual-boot section of the wiki and followed the tip box, linking here. I was able to get the UUID and location of the EFI partition. I created and attempted to run the if [ "${grub_platform}" == "efi" ]; then "script" on that page but it gave me syntax errors and search isn't a native zsh function so I guessed this isn't a shell script. I also replaced "Microsoft Windows Vista/7/8/8.1 UEFI/GPT" with "Microsoft Windows 10 UEFI/GPT" because that's what I have and it seemed sensible.
More research led me to this page on Manjaro installation and I see a similar block of code that appears to go into a file called /etc/grub.d/40_custom.
I know that when I start editing files that interact with grub I'm in my deep end, so I didn't want to proceed until I consulted y'all. Is there anything I'm missing? How, specifically should I go about safely editing these grub configuration files? My Windows partition is still working, which is how I'm typing this, and I'd like to keep it that way :P

2023.04.01 22:33 GroundbreakingAd3465 Husband's Dog Has Severe Seperation Anxiety

So my husband and I have been together for about two years now. Amongst us we have three dogs- I have one 5 year old boxer and he has a 3 year old boxer and a 10 year old wolf dog. His wolf dog has intense separation anxiety towards my husband and it's really stressful to me.
So I moved in a few months back with my 5 year old dog and the only constant stressor in my new life here is his wolf dog.
Background on his wolf dog: she is practically glued to my husbands hip at all times. Other than that, she's a very sweet girl and well trained. But my husband can not simply walk outside of the house or go downstairs without her full on freaking out until he returns (howling, whining, pacing, standing on hind legs to look out the windows, scratching and the doowalls, etc. She's lived in this house her whole life and has managed to destroy quite a lot. Like even if he just goes to the car or to the mailbox, she will freak out. The howling/whining is really what stresses me out. Also it's only happening when he leaves so he never truly experiences the whole ordeal first-hand.
We both work from home, some days he has to spend majority of the day inside, other days outside (still in the yard), while I am mostly inside.
The times where my husband is not within probably 10 feet of her, she is full on panicking. Clawing at windows and destroying whatever just to get eyes on his whereabouts. I feel so bad for her and she gets so stressed overwhelmed and over threshold so easily that I feel helpless. I'm can't distract her from the fact that my husband is not there and I'm afraid that since she is so old, she is so set in her ways and this is not something that can be fixed.
When my husband is near her, she is perfectly content and such a great dog.
I don't want to sound judge mental here but it bothers me that's his profession is a being dog trainer yet he has the dog with the worst separation anxiety. He rarely disciplines her, lets her get away with more than the other dogs, while I am the more strict one with more boundaries I try to enforce. He claims that he has tried everything and there is just a chemical imbalance in her and we can only manage it.
I could never enjoy a quiet day alone if my husband isn't home. I love my husband and his dog and I don't want to lose either of them. I just need options at this point.
It can be a little stressful when mentioning incorporating training or working out a new solution to help combat her SA but I always get (respectfully) shut down. He's tried medication but said he doesn't like seeing her "drunk-like", she still whines and howls just very sloppily. I mean this dog has won awards and such so I know that she is smart.
I've mentioned maybe us working on systematic desensitization maybe in the evenings or something but it just gets pushed under the rug. He claims that she is unfixable in this regards as it's a chemical imbalance in the brain and she can only be managed and her current state is the best it's going to get.
I get frustrated towards him because there's no foreseeable solution, but I mean he is a dog trainer so he must know his shit, right? Is he right and I'm just unknowledgeable enough to see what he sees? Or is there actually a solution to this?
Is there something I could do on my own to help simmer her SA? I try to do simple commands with her and use high value treats to build our bond when he's not around but it's always hit or miss. She's not really receptive towards me as my husband is the ultimate high value treat so anything and everything else is unimportant to her.
If she is too old to change and this is just the way things are, are there things I could do in my free time with her to help her feel more calm?
I get so angry at him and at her but I think my anger is just a result of being way overstimulated by her severe SA behavior. I don't want to be angry at either of them. I just want a solution.
I could use any and all advice.

2023.04.01 22:29 Flame_Oreo Just a question about error VAN9001

Hello everyone.
The other day I tried installing Valorant and came across error VAN9001. After investigating, it turns out my computer doesn't support TPM 2.0 (currently, my pc has version 1.2). This was something that actually had come up a while ago, as my pc stopped meeting the minimum requirements for windows 11 and started showing a message on the right lower corner of the desktop thats says this.
After researching, I understand that I have a hardware problem. My question, however, is if downgrading to windows 10 is my only solution.

Duke (Math) RD
Harvard (Math) RD
Cornell (CS in COE) RD
Penn (Math) (previously deferred)
Final Reflection:
Considering that all of my waitlists are soft rejections, it's probably a wrap for me. I will either be committing to UCI or UMD.
Looking back I probably overestimated my chances at top schools/CS schools. My ECs besides #1 were not really up to mark and I had very few CS ECs. Besides that, my profile is pretty solid in terms of stats and awards. While I do recognize that it is hard to get into these schools for my major with my demographic, I have to admit that much of my failure was my own doing.
In freshman and sophomore year I was more invested in getting good grades, studying comp math, playing the trumpet, and playing basketball for fun. The issue was that I didn't know until junior year when I visited A2C for the first time that my profile was a dime a dozen for my demographic. I tried to do things to build up a stronger profile such as gaining leadership in clubs and applying to top math programs which I was able to do successfully. However, this push was too little, too late. If I had known about A2C earlier, I would have been able to include more elite summer programs and CS internships or research on my profile which would have maybe pushed me over the edge at some of these schools.
For freshmen and sophomores, especially of my demographic, do not listen to the advice of people that tell you to pursue things that you find fun. It is absolute horsecrap. These top schools are absolutely unforgiving and they reject thousands of people that follow this advice every year. Instead, chase excellence at whatever you are interested in doing. Become one of the best at it and find a way to showcase your skills. This could be olympiads, research competitions, showcases, etc. If you are able to show off a spike in one area, AO's are much more likely to be impressed with your application. Additionally, you will naturally be more passionate about these areas and write very meaningful essays.
Another thing I learned the hard way is that olympiads are only worth it if you reach a very high level. While some people might be impressed with a 3x AIME qualifier, it is absolutely normal for an AO to see this on hundreds of applications every year and it really doesn't stand out. It's more of a supplemental thing than anything else. Hell, even my USABO camper friend, literally a top 20 high school student in biology, got shafted at these top schools.
With all being said, I am absolutely not concerned with how I will perform at whatever school I choose. I still have amazing options. UMD, UW Madison, and Purdue are all T20 CS programs and UCI is an amazing in-state option. The problem solving skills I learned over the hours and hours of comp math studying will most likely serve me well long term in this field. I just feel a little disappointed that I wasn't able to reach my maximum potential. That is all.

2023.04.01 21:51 Bulker3000 4th Gen Thinkpad X1 Yoga Battery Issue Discussion

Hey everyone,
I'm reaching out to the community to see if anyone has had similar issues with their Lenovo laptop. About two weeks ago, I received a pop-up message from Lenovo that read "no battery is recognized," and my laptop would die very quickly if not always being charged. After some software updates, the problem went away, but now it has returned, and there are no updates that can be done (excluding the Windows 11 update - I'm still on Windows 10).
I've checked that the battery's device driver is up to date, and I'm not sure what to do at this point. My computer operates well when it is plugged in, but if I unplug it, it will die within two minutes. When I restart the computer, I occasionally get a message that reads, "This system does not support batteries that are not genuine Lenovo made or authorized. The system will continue to boot, but may not charge unauthorized batteries." I have not changed the battery or anything since I have purchased the thing.
As a CS undergrad student, I desperately need my computer to finish out this semester. I'm assuming this is a hardware issue, but for now, I'm just going to use my computer plugged in at all times to do my work. Over the summer, I plan on upgrading my laptop to something else (I've had this laptop for 2.75 years or so).
I'm wondering if anyone has any quick fix suggestions or thoughts on what the issue may be. Would upgrading to Windows 11 fix this somehow? Would doing a battery reset via Lenovo Vantage Power Panel help?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!
EDIT: I have tried using different power ports- this does not solve the problem. (even with higher Ws)

2023.04.01 21:49 alex_1906 Need Help with Creating a Web App for Generating Images using ML Model (preferably pixel2style2pixel) without NVIDIA GPU

Hey everyone!
I am currently developing a web application that allows users to upload a collection of portrait images (10-15 in total) and, in return, generates a series of output images featuring the subject in various scenarios or with specific attributes, such as appearing as an astronaut. The application's primary functionality centers on utilizing a pre-trained machine learning model to process the input images and generate the desired output based on user-defined attributes or contexts.
From my research, it seems like pixel2style2pixel could be a suitable pre-trained model for this purpose. However, I don't have an NVIDIA GPU and need to run the application locally using only my CPU (I know it's not ideal). I tried making pixel2style2pixel work on the CPU, but I'm facing issues and it just won't run.
Here's my requirements.txt file for my Python project:
torch==1.9.0+cpu torchvision==0.10.0+cpu Pillow==9.3 -f https://download.pytorch.org/whl/torch_stable.html fastai>=2.3.1 ipywidgets voila
But I keep getting CUDA-related errors like:
No CUDA runtime is found, using CUDA_HOME='C:/Program Files/NVIDIA GPU Computing Toolkit/CUDA\v11.6'
A couple of things to note:

Thanks in advance!

2023.04.01 21:17 Difficult-Hair-1032 First mescaline trip

Full disclosure, this is my first psychedelic experience of any kind and other than some weed edibles in Canada after legalisation my only real drug experience (alcohol not withstanding).
I read Michael Pollans book, a small amount of the reserach literature on theraputic effects of psychedlics and some youtube videos (there are a few Huberman Labs videos on it). Currently in therapy and not on SSRIs ( I was on them until about ~1 year ago). Bought a San Pedro online. Made a tea out of it - removed the spines, peeled off the translucent skin, cut it into stars and then much smaller pieces and added water. Did 3-4 hours with multiple reductions (re-adding water). I left the core in rather than just going for that dark green layer.
I dosed it by drinking half at 9am, 1/4 at 930AM, and 1/4 at 1030AM. The taste was god-awful but I althouhg I felt about queasy I didn't vomit or get close to vomiting. I found it easier to drink cold when I had the second two doses - not because it tasted better but because I was able to gulp / swallow it faster.
I video-logged the trip (not continuously but every 20-30 minutes) and also had a notebook handy to write things down or draw as things came up.
From about 30 minutes in the body high was on and steadily building, although I didn't recognize it as such. I hadn't really researched the specific effects of the mescaline experience so this aspect was a surprise to me. Around 30 minutes - 45 minutes in there was also a subtle perception shift; I stood on my porch and started to become more aware of the birds flying around and in and out of trees at the houses nearby in an unusual way.
Body high and happiness continued building. In most of the videos from the first two hours I'm talking about how I think I've done it wrong or bought the wrong cactus; although I muse in a few of them that drinking a morning cup of coffee doesn't usually have me sitting in the corner of my flat on a cushion laughing and giggling and feeling jolly.
From around the 2 hour mark mild hallucinogenic effects combined with clairvoyant insights start occuring. THe hallucinogenic effects are mild things - the bubble animation on the screen of my phone, the hanging lights in my room starting to occassionally duplicate as my eye moves. From 2-4 hours the hallucinogenic effects steadily build. During this time I'm alternating between being inside and outside laying on the grass. Outside the hallucinogenic effects are stronger - a purple colour around the edges of hte clouds, deeper colour and texture, the sky becomes a deeper blue. I become even more hyper-aware of birds - can see the wings flapping in slow motion and they kaleidoscope and duplicate as they move across the sky. At one point I'm looking at the grass and become hyper aware of the depth and texture of the grass, the bubbles of water dew on the grass, and a wasp that lands in front of me. The hallucinogenic effects seem stronger outside.
Inside the house, the clairvoyant insights - I had prepared a list of questions on paper to re-read (that I had re-read the night before, and as I took the mescaline etc). As I read them and thought about them, the answers start coming to me. Why do I drink. How do I change my habits. How do I quit drinking. There are alot of these, and I have about 10 pages of notes - free-flowing answers and clairvoyant insights. In the videos at this stage I talk about it as though the cactus or some other being is answering the questions although I suppose it is all in my mind.
Towards the 4 hour mark the experience starts peaking; in a wave-like fashion I start feeling increasing pressure to go outside and lay down. The curtain on my sliding door seems to flutter and an insect flys outside in a way that seems to beckon me. She wants me to be outside. To lay down. Who is she? I don't know, but i need to lay on the grass. I take the blanket away so I can be on the grass. I feel myself melting away and dissolving into the grass as I lay in the sun and watch the clouds. Am I the clouds? Maybe I'm a blade of grass. Maybe I'm the earth. Maybe I'm the sky. I am dissolving away. Time has lost meaning. I seem to be outside for eternity. I can feel myself zooming out from where I am laying on the grass - the street I live on, the town I live in, New Zealand, Oceania, the world. At each level I can see the connections between everyone and how everyone is connected to each other and the other. It's a repeat of a very dark, depressing experience I had shared with my therapist - only in that experience, at each level was emptiness and loneliness. This is the opposite of that. I feel a deep sense of connection. I start to feel that my deceased brother is with me, and that he is part of the earth and sky. I am part of the earth and sky. So we are connected; even though he is gone, he is still here. Hallucinogenic effects are stronger during this time - the colours and depth in the clouds and sky, the birds. The peak fades towards the 6 hour mark (based on the time the videos were recorded). In the first video after the peak I am talking about the earth mother, the sky mother, the volcano mother and the volcano god. I am content. Goopy. I still want to lay down.
Spent alot of time laying down on a long, gradual comedown, still feeling mild hallucinogenic effects and happiness. There was at this stage the first ' sad ' parts of the trip - some crying about my brother and being alone which lasted maybe 10-15 minutes. This was followed by the only 'dark' part of the trip. I had read some flight instructions about essentially facing fear / leaning into it rather than turning away. I saw a demonic, metallic face with my eyes closed - red lights in the shape of the face, and I could read the emotion of the face although it didn't seem to have a face. It alternated between threatening me and threatening people I care about. When it threatened me I did nothing, turned away, did not react, but when it threatened others, I started getting angry and wanting to fight it. As it alternated back and forth it started threatening people I cared about more and more, until eventually it threatened my five year old niece and in my rage I felt myself reaching into the volcano beneath me and sucking the lava out and pouring it into the demon face until it dissolved. I then had the thought that the cactus was trying to show me the difference between how I reacted when it threatened me and how I reacted when it threatened others. The demon face returned, and this time when it threatened me I started it down and told it to leave; it again alternated to threatening my neice; and as I felt the rage building within me again the face developed a look of fear and dissolved. I recorded myself after this saying that I thought it was trying to show me that I don't defend myself or stand up for myself because as a kid I couldn't, but now I can - as demonstrated by the fact that I defeated the demon when it threatened my neice.
The trip gradually faded and around 6pm I started feeling the effects were really wearing off although sunset (around 7:30) was still supersaturated and beautiful. I was finally able to sleep around 9.
The next day I woke up at 6am - one of the things I had asked in my q&a period - and went for a run; something I have been trying to do for a decade with no success (get up and exercise). I then went about my day quite productively. In the evening I went to the store (I habitually drink around 1L of 7% beer a day) but felt no urge to drink; instead I felt drawn to some mandarin oranges. For the next two weeks more or less this carried on (I drank socially at work a few times but that's it) along with an elevated mood and morning running.

2023.04.01 21:07 zantie Sequence and Variants Update - [Apr. 1st]

https://imgur.com/vrxgAs2
Graph of subvariants and recombinants sampled in Washington state over the past five months. The dashed line represents the proportion of PCR positive tests that have been sequenced so far. I've excluded the most recent week of March 19th from the graph as there are only six sequences returned and it makes the whole thing skewed.
Five of the past seven weeks are incomplete, with the first two weeks of Feb. and first two weeks of March are considered "incomplete" due to being less than ~10 % of PCR positives being sequenced from that time. March 19th is considered "very incomplete" as it is fewer than 5 %.
https://imgur.com/I4Ph26N
Table with most recent four weeks of data. These numbers will fluctuate with backfill, especially for the week(s) indicated as "incomplete" and "very incomplete". Values may not always add up to 100% due to rounding.
Additional tables below illustrate changes due to recent backfill.

The CDC has not added XBB.1.16 to their variants list, but I think it because it hasn't yet hit 1% of the country just yet, not that they aren't paying attention. The WHO has added it to their watch list which is encouraging though it still feels like they're in a "wait and see" outlook on how it goes down in India.
For context, this is an Omicron-Omicron recombinant that's behind the current increase in cases in India. It has been found quite a few countries and is already in about half the states as of today (aka, two weeks ago when they were originally sampled). I think this is an example of how reduced testing/monitoring/mitigations makes it appear like something has blossomed suddenly and simultaneously across the globe. It's just likely it's been spreading undetected until recently-ish.
India is the only country, as far as I can tell, that is now increasing testing and increasing pressure on its citizens to mask in crowded situations. Everyone else seems to emulate "it won't happen here." Serious deja vu with regards to how Delta began.
Australia has recently had some issues with a sublineage of XBC (a "Deltacron") but it's too early for me to suss anything out just yet. We do have a couple XBCs but not the XBC.1.6 that seems to be causing them issues.
Repeated notes [clarified some wording from last week, added bit about type 3-IFN]:
XBB.1.16 is of concern because it's growing faster than XBB.1.5 and because of a "trifecta" in mutations not on the spike protein (ORF7a:A13V, ORF9b:I5T, and ORF9b:N55S), all correlated to suppressing key parts of our immune system's ability to respond to infections and tumor growth.
ORF7a is associated with suppressing major histocompatibility complex type I (MHC class I) which is how the body puts "red flags" on the surface of infected cells to signal destruction by T-cells. Suppressing this means the virus has more time to continue replicating without the body recognizing it is infected in the first place. This also unfortunately lets it get around a lot of our built up immunity from prior infections and vaccines as the body can't spin up T-cells to attack it if it doesn't know anything is wrong in the first place.
ORF9b is associated with suppressing interferon regulatory factor 3 (IRF3) which also then inhibits interferon types 1 and 3 (type 1-IFN and type 3-IFN, respectively). XBB.1.9.1 also has the I5T mutation.
IRF3 = Interferon Regulatory Factor 3: basic immune response to viral infections including type 1-IFN and type 3-IFN. Suppressing this means suppressing the inflammation response that produces the early symptoms we recognize as "not feeling well" in order to stay home or test.
type 1-IFN = Interferon type 1: T-cell response and tumor cell recognition. Suppressing this increases the chance that our body, which regularly produces mistakes in cellular growth due to the imperfect nature of our bodies and environment, would have difficulty recognizing and clearing out those less-than-helpful cellular changes. This could lead to an increase in the proliferation of damaged cells and tumors going undetected/uncontrolled by the immune system.
type 3-IFN = Interferon type 3: similar to type 1-IFN but focused on defending against viruses entering epithelium (tissue lining; gut walls, mucous membranes, lining of all blood vessels, etc.). Suppressing this increases the chance that viruses will be more successful in gaining access to the body and potentially increase the number of organs directly affected and create greater difficulty in the body being able to completely clear the infection once it takes hold.
F486P is also found in XBB.1.5, 1.9.1, and 1.16. This spike mutation is associated in both increased immune evasion and increased cell binding/entering affinity.
FASTA and metadata files downloaded from GISAID, Pango lineage assignments were made using Nextclade Web v2.13.0.

2023.04.01 20:54 DieselWe PC freezes randomly and does not post afterwards

Hello all! Can someone please help me?
The problem I've been having for the past few days is basically summarized in the title. It doesn't seem to matter what I'm doing on the PC (either writing a document or playing videogames), it freezes for an undefinite amount of time. I then have to manually turn off or reset the computer, only for it to not boot up. Sometimes I get to the splash screen before freezing again, but most often the monitor doesn't even get a signal. Only the fans spin in these moments.
I'm pretty sure it's a hardware problem, because it happens with both the Linux and the Windows partition. I think it's a problem with my motherboard, but I'm not sure.
I moved the RAM stick to all other slots to no avail. I tried to boot up with no peripherals whatsoever (with the exception of the monitor and keyboard), but thst didn't work either. I cleared CMOS a bunch of times, and even removed the battery twice, and that seems to mitigate the problem (the PC generally boots up afterwards), but it doesn't fix it completely.
I have not tried with a different motherboard, CPU, RAM or PSU because I don't have access to extra components.
Here are my specs (both OS's are fully up-to-date): - CPU: AMD Ryzen 1600AF (using the stock cooler); - Motherboard: Gigabyte AB350-M DS3H-V2; - GPU: AMD Radeon R5 230; - RAM: Crucial Ballistic 16GB at 2666MHZ (single channel and XMP is disabled); - SSD: Adata Swordfish 250GB (Linux - Pop_OS) - HDD: Western Digital 1TB (Windows 10) - PSU: Gigabyte P550B ATX 550W - UPS: SMS Revolution II

2023.04.01 20:36 STO_rath Cant see nvme drive

Tring to reinstall Win10 on an nvme drive that housed it previously. Wiped the drive and now its not showing in the boot options.
I can see it in the BIOS of the laptop under Configuration > UEFI HII Configuration > Intel(R) Rapid Storage Technology. But i cant figure out how to get it to recognize it as an actual boot option.
SPECS:
Device: HP PAvilion x360 Convertible 15-er0xxx System Board ID: 88BC BIOS Vendor: Insyde BIOS Revision: F.16 Doesn't show whether secure boot is enabled or disabled.
Any ideas how I can get it to show as a boot option so I can install Windows on it?
