2023.05.30 22:51 Archives-H I volunteered for an expedition to get off death row. I never should have entered the Sea of Green.

Before I begin my story I must maintain that my sentence to death was a wrong and vile thing to do. I maintain that I am not a killer. I did not kill the schoolchildren the authorities decided to hang me for.
My sentence to death, I must maintain, is a huge misunderstanding. There must be forces out there against me, who conspired to put me in prison for this very experiment, this accursed expedition.
I am not deranged. I am not insane.
The man in the odd multicolored sweater paid me a visit a week before my scheduled execution date. “You are the former schoolteacher Chet Adami?” he asked, polite, offering me a plastic cup of coffee.
I nodded, taking a sip. “I didn’t kill those kids,” I reiterated, for about the thousandth time. “Are you the uh, priest guy? That comes before-”
He shook his head and waved away the guards. “My name is Canopy Hydrangea,” he introduced, extending a hand. I shook it. “I understand you may not be guilty, despite what the state believes.”
I nodded. “Finally, someone who-”
He cut me off. “I’m not interested in your story. Whether you die or not is of no consequence to the people I represent,” he continued. “But I am here to offer you a deal. There’s a place the people I represent need exploring, and I need volunteers.”
He produced a sheet of paper and a pen. “This agreement,” he clasped it into my hands, “has you join a team of expendable, uh, volunteers such as yourself on this expedition. You get in, get the things we need, and get out- and you’re free for life.”
This was better than dying in prison.
I asked him what place this was that I’d be sent to. He told me I had to sign the form first. “I’ll do it, then,” I cheered, signing the document.
He smiled and patted me on the shoulder. “We’ll even give you a whole new identity,” he offered. And with that, he seized the document away from me and left the building.
Within hours I was blindfolded, sedated, and transported. When I awoke I was strapped to a bed in a helicopter, with four others beside me, all beginning to wake up.
The man who’d offered me the deal was there too, sucking on a lollipop while rearranging documents and photographs.
These images, I assumed, was the place they wanted us to explore. They were mostly all aerial photos, a sea of endless green and the occasional bird. And yet, there was more- images of impossible landscapes, dreamlike beings.
“Ah, you guys are awake!” he clapped once, and walked over.
The next few moments were a flash as he re-injected us with some sort of blue, wriggling substance. It was cold, and I swear it pulsed inside my arm.
Then we had landed, and the group was quickly taken inside a compound. We were freed and sat down in some sort of meeting room. More people were inside.
A blue haired lady joined the man.
“Welcome, volunteers,” he announced, pointing to a projector. “You are all, save for one, prisoners on death row,” he reminded. “This offer today is simple- you enter the forest, travel to an outpost we have recently lost contact with,” he turned on the projector, displayed a bright red cylinder labeled ‘SYSTEM RECORDER-A32’, “and recover this data module.”
The woman spoke next. “Easy, right?” she counted us. “We’ll provide maps,” she gestured to tablets. “But this forest is different.”
They proceeded to explain the reason they need ‘volunteers’ for the assignment then.
We were on an island somewhere in the Java Sea. The island had a massive forest in the center, one that at first glance seemed as normal as ever. This changed when an international mining company sent in a team of geologists to determine if there was anything of note beyond the forest.
This team never returned.
Nor did a second team, armed with weapons. Or an environmentalist group that ventured in to document new species. So then the organization our recruiters had come from entered the forest.
We were on the outskirts of the forest, at a place they were calling Ake Base.
Over the past month, they had begun to map the forest and determine why so many hadn’t returned. The reason was illogical- the forest was bigger than the island itself.
Drones that ventured in should have come out the other side- yet remained inside the forest, encountering bizarre phenomena and creatures undocumented.
Every so often, the forest would slope downwards, revealing a new layer with new and distinct ecosystems.
“Recently though,” Canopy concluded, “we’ve lost contact with several outposts in the third layer to eighth layers.” He changed the slide to one of the lost outposts, standing alone amidst a vibrant, alien forest. “You enter the forest, get to your team’s assigned outpost, get back out with the data and you’ll be set for life.”
“Does anyone choose to rescind their agreement?” the woman asked. “It’s either death, or this, and frankly, your chances here aren’t that better.”
There were some who raised their hands. “Hell no!” a man shouted. “I’m goin’ back to life!” The woman had them taken away. We heard gunfire outdoors. No life row for him.
Whoever they were- they were serious about this.
They started to call out names and assign teams.
My team, was small, four of us. There was a mercenary named Leo who kept talking about the food the organization had brought us. He seemed pleasant, charismatic, and I almost forgot he was a criminal.
There was a scientist called Anya who, as she joked, was ‘serving infinite life sentences’ for crimes against humanity. She was given the codes and a booklet of things to watch out for in what they called the ‘Sea of Green’.
Then there was Gail. She was quieter than the three of us, and had an almost eerie vibe to her. She didn’t tell us what she’d done to get here, but she was there nonetheless.
Thankfully, we were given the closest- and safest outpost. A little place in Layer Three, marked by the map as only a few hours walk away.
We set off the next day.
The forest, in the beginning, seemed to almost invite us in. The birds chirped and danced, unafraid of mankind. We even fed them the nuts we’d been given as breakfast rations, which they seemed to enjoy.
About an hour in, things changed. The light from the sun barely pierced the canopy, and at times, we had to utilize our flashlights to see what was in front of us. Leo took the lead, hacking away at the branch and vine in front of us.
The forest was starting to look like a jungle- and yet, as we traversed it never seemed to choose which one it wanted to be.
“Wait!” Anya hissed, as we crossed a stream that seemed oddly familiar. She read from the booklet, then to the map on tablets we’d been given. “We’ve made a circle.”
Leo shook his head. “That’s impossible,” he insisted. “I don’t remember turning.”
“Yeah,” I agreed, catching up from behind.
Anya shared the booklet. “It’s one first phenomena researchers encounter,” she explained. “This place plays tricks on us- we need to follow the stream.”
“But then,” Gail pointed out, “we’d be going in the wrong direction.”
“Trust the book,” Anya concluded. We followed the stream then, and the path started to grow denser, as if the forest hated us for traveling further. But the path was right, and the forest changed as we journeyed.
An hour later the forest had changed. It had sloped downwards a bit, inviting us to the second layer of the maze. The trees seemed higher, and the light was now gone completely.
This was when we started to hear it. Click-click.
“What was that?” I asked, turning. Click-click.
Anya rushed through the book. “It’s not documented.”
Click-click. And then we saw lights in the distance, lights that as we continued walking, were revealed to us as bulbous fruit on the trees that glowed an eerie electric blue.
Click-click. “You sure it’s not in that book?” Leo questioned, switching his machete out for a gun. Click-click.
The clicks were getting louder, each one sending a jolt of uneasy fear down my spine. We moved closer together now, fearing the unknown that were in these- A bush in front of us rustled. Leo aimed his weapon.
A deer- no, something like a deer popped out, gently squawking. It was… wrong in every sense, but it seemed more occupied in chewing a flower than us.
The small creature had the antlers of a deer, yes, but it also had the face of an old man. Not to mention six fists full of thumbs at the end of its legs. It inspected a glowing fruit with it’s odd thumbs.
“Ew,” Gail commented, disgusted. “What the hell is that?”
Anya didn’t have time to look for answers before a black, insectine limp shot out of one of the bulbous fruits and impaled the deer-thing. It screamed an all too human scream and struggled.
We backed away- and by then, the noise was overwhelming. Click-clickClick-clickClick-clickClickclickClickclickClick-clickClick-click. They erupted from every single one of the bulbous fruits, and things began to pour out of them.
The limbs, see, were attached to a head. The a simple sphere that opened into buzzsaws of teeth that grotesquely clicked as they opened. The face-deer only screamed as the clicking creatures devoured it.
“Run!” Leo reminded, shooting as some started to near us. “Run!”
That shook us out, and we ran, terror in our very veins. They seemed more interested in the fallen deer than us- but we still ran until we could no longer.
Actually, it was until I fell off and entered the third layer.
A weight appeared on my chest and I fought it off, thinking I was about to die- but the soft, furry creature atop me jumped off. It wasn’t one of the clicking monsters.
And then I realized the third layer was bright. The trees themselves were glowing now, not the insect fruits of before. And there were a whole host of new, bizarre creatures.
The thing I’d pushed off was some sort of rabbit, covered in glowing blue stripes. If layer two had been a forest of darkness this was it’s very opposite.
In the skies there were ribbons of glowing creatures- thin kites on an unseen wind. The trees were alive with all sorts of furried friends, darting here and there and eating odd colored berries that didn’t seem real.
Anya pointed and spoke, “Look!” It was the outpost, in ruins.
“But what attacked it?” Gail murmured, as we walked over.
We entered through a hole in the wall. The place was oddly peaceful, calming, now home to bioluminescent little ants that dotted the place. Occasionally, one or two of the face-deer would appear, licking the dots up with twin tongues that emerged from it’s too-human face.
“Cute,” Leo joked, picking one up and stroking it. It screamed back at him, chilling and he dropped it. “Never doing that again.”
The place was… too peaceful. And- “what happened to their bodies?” I posited. “If they were attacked- where’s their blood? Their corpses?”
Anya shrugged. “It is odd- perhaps they got devoured.” She gestured to the many oddities around us. “But you’re right, there should be bones, at least.”
This was when we heard the screaming. And all of a sudden every single creature retreated away, disappearing from view, save for the tiny ants inside with us. The screaming was a cacophony of voices, realer than the ones we’d heard from the face-deer.
“I think we need to go,” Leo whispered, holding out the red ‘data module’ in his hands. “Now.”
The screaming got ever closer, and the trees in front of the outpost, beyond a window, started to shake. “I concur.”
We were backing away when we heard the squelching of something loud and heavy. Turning around, we saw the screaming creature we’d heard. It was massive, fleshy, and filled with tiny gaping holes, some filled with eyes, all rising, breathing as one.
I nearly threw up. But that was for a different reason.
The holes were one thing. But the screaming, severed bodies of dozens of people attached the the eye-full monster was another. They screamed and screamed, their bodies unneatly joined and sown into the creature.
It sniffed the air and walked over to the glass, looking in as we hid. “What is it?” I squealed. “What the hell is that?”
The face of a victim in military clothes appeared at the window, screaming, face slowly popping, skin repairing and being digested all at once. Anya flipped through the pages. “They called it a Fleshweave. It absorbs bodies and eats them that way.”
That would explain the lack of bodies we’d seen.
The window shattered- and the thing began to force itself on it, flesh turning to churned cylinders through the window. The bodies, crushed further, screamed some more.
So we ran as the beasts fell into the room with a plop. And despite it’s heavy, gluttonous form it charged forwards, faster than it looked.
Out the outpost we went. I felt a meaty hand hit me and then I fell. It stalked towards me, but a gunshot from Leo burst it’s pus-ridden hand, covered my in grotesque, viscous liquid.
I picked myself up and ran from the screaming thing, up the steep slope and climbing onto the second layer.
I fell again, but Anya caught me, helping me up.
Leo did the same for Gail- but she slipped and fell back into the third layer. The thing approached her, all of it’s pulsing eyes upon her. “Help me!” she bellowed. “Don’t leave me-”
Leo prepared to jump down- but it was too late. The Fleshweave simply picked her up and it opened it’s skin, forging her into her body- er, her top half,- it severed the rest.
“Go!” I snapped, dragging the mercenary to action. The creature behind us lifted itself onto the dark forest and continued to follow.
Gail, merged with the other unfortunate bodies, screamed. I almost stopped in terror from the sound, but flight-or-fight forced me to continue.
Click-click. We found ourselves back in the center of the abode with the insect fruit. And the insects were clearly attracted to the stench of decay the monster emanated. Limbs emerged, and the face-beetles jumped up and swarmed the creatures.
I don't know if the creature was killed by it. I only remember Gail’s face as the insects started to pick her body- and so many others like her- apart.
The way out seemed harder than going in, but we made it. We survived. We reached the outpost and handed our data module to the man who’d offered us the deal. “Impressive,” he congratulated. “You’re the first team back.”
“I want out now,” I panted. “Back to real life.”
He patted me on the shoulder and gave me a sad smile. “According to the world you’ve already died by suicide in your cell,” he informed. “See, there’s a way the people I work for have operated so cleanly for the past few centuries.” He paused and took a step back. “We can’t afford loose ends, see, and you’ve shown us you have the guts to survive Bandai La- er, the Sea of Green.”
I took a step back, panicking. “What do you mean?”
He sighed. “We can’t give you a new life and risk exposing our operation here,” he explained. “And we still need ah, expendable people to lead us to whatever’s in the center of the island.” He handed me a can of soda. “Welcome to your new life. The Company really values your dedication as a treasured employee.”

But I don’t want this. I was promised freedom. And they can’t keep me from exposing them- I’ve typed this up and Anya did something to the tablet so I can receive and post things online.
I’m not sure if this’ll work. But if it is: I’m on an island somewhere in the Java Sea. There’s a forest that goes on forever and I’m being held as some sort of explorer by some Company.
Find me. Before I die.

2023.05.30 22:15 Dis_cip_line [Advice] How to Engage Hydra Ling Bane

Dear community,
I'm a D2/D3 Terran. one of the most frustrating zerg comp (IMO) is Hydra ling bane... I usually have good macro, more army , and I presplit, but I still don't seem to be able to beat that comp.. Any advice on how to engage?
Here is a replay if you'd like to see what I mean: https://sc2replaystats.com/replay/23650256 .. it shows how I had more supply, more army, but I got denied over and over .. Tried to drop but that didn't go well
FYI, I usually go for tanks (vs mines) as:
1- if Z plays Roach
2- the Tank shoots units, while mines might not do damage
3- I prepare for the Lurker switch

2023.05.30 22:06 4668fgfj The Ironic Case For Nazbol

I am specifically referring to National Bolshevism as the term was originally coined, rather than any group of people who may have labelled themselves "National Boshelviks" since. The term predates even the establishment of the Soviet Union in 1922, let alone any other 20th century regime. The term was originally used by Karl Radek to describe two member he was expelling as "National Boshelviks". What these people wanted to do was align the revolutionary movement in Germany with that in Russia in mutual opposition to both the treaty of Versailles and the treaty of Brest-Litovsk.
I am specifically defending the prospect of this strategy in particular rather than specifically any person who might have been or could have been advocating for it and any ideas they might have had otherwise, not because it is national, or even bolshevik, but rather because I think it conforms with the idea in the Communist Manifesto of the role of Communists in relation to Proletarians where the Communists do not form separate political programs of their own and instead are supposed to align various proletarians movements together across nationality with respect to the current stage than any of those movements may find themselves in.
In what relation do the Communists stand to the proletarians as a whole?
The Communists do not form a separate party opposed to the other working-class parties.
They have no interests separate and apart from those of the proletariat as a whole.
They do not set up any sectarian principles of their own, by which to shape and mould the proletarian movement.
The Communists are distinguished from the other working-class parties by this only: 1. In the national struggles of the proletarians of the different countries, they point out and bring to the front the common interests of the entire proletariat, independently of all nationality. 2. In the various stages of development which the struggle of the working class against the bourgeoisie has to pass through, they always and everywhere represent the interests of the movement as a whole.
Therefore the irony of this position I am defending is that it was the one advocated for by people labelled National, which would clearly seem to be contrary to being independent of nationality, and Bolshevik who would seem to be sectarians seeking to mold to proletarian movement. The other irony is that for it to have been possible it would have required overcoming proletarian movements in different nationalities operating independent of one another, in addition to overcoming the sectarianism emerging between all the differing "Communist" movements. In other words this is another call in an endless stream of "stop infighting!" coupled with "everyone except for me is wrong" which just contributes to the infighting by creating a new sectarian divergence but there is very little that can be done about that. Mostly this is just an excuse to discuss a particular moment I find interesting and inner contrarian in me just wants to make the seemingly most insane position seem the most reasonable as a challenge.
Lenin was not in favour of this so it was a bit of a non-starter. In "Left-Wing" Communism: An Infantile Disorder he criticizes people who refuse to recognize the treaties, but in addition to the tendencies of so-called National Bolsheviks, he also criticized the Left-Communists that Karl Radek and the other German Revolutionaries were often members. Here we can start to see a problem emerging as you clearly have two different revolutionary movements in two different countries who are having difficulty working with each other (with the problem of the treaties between these countries not even being the main issue they were squabbling over). Indeed while not around long enough to have become officially a Left-Communist herself, Luxembourg is associated with them as her writings are cited as a major influence on the tendency, and she is notable for criticizing Lenin's Bolshevism.
There was a lot of confusion in this period and numerous tendencies diverging from one another, the reason being is that in the wake of the Russian Revolution and the end of the First World War there was a period of revolutionary activity across the entire world. While Russia and Germany are often the most focused upon due to the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany being our core 20th century players and many seeing these revolutions as the origin points of these things with a compare and contrast analysis being done to understand while one failed and the other succeeded, in the light of understanding the world revolution as a wave, looking at just these two revolutions becomes parochial, as there was clearly one singular revolution going on across the world in the same way as during the Revolutions of 1848 where the Communist Manifesto was published.
Indeed Marx and Engels viewed that as a singular revolution and would have viewed the similar wave of revolutions that peaked in 1919 but spanned from 1917-1923 as a singular revolution. While differing in severity there was revolutionary activity in numerous countries ranging from the Two Red Years in Italy to the much less impressive sounding Red Week) in the Netherlands. Even as far away as Canada, Australia, and South Africa there were labour revolts in this period. The case of Canada is a bit emblematic of the obscurity of the scale of these events, as while the Winnipeg General Strike of 1919 is well known, much like with only Russia and Germany beings discussed, the strike wave nature of the events in Canada just as in the world tends to fall out of discussion, as for instance this wave actually started with a general strike in Vancouver that was crushed by the military.
In the Preface to the 1882 Russian Edition of the Communist Manifesto, Marx and Engels even suggested in the wake of the assassination of the Tsar Liberator that the impending Russian (bourgeois) Revolution would serve as a signal for the Western proletariat to have their Revolution, and that the Russian Revolution could end up being communist alongside the West.
And now Russia! During the Revolution of 1848-9, not only the European princes, but the European bourgeois as well, found their only salvation from the proletariat just beginning to awaken in Russian intervention. The Tsar was proclaimed the chief of European reaction. Today, he is a prisoner of war of the revolution in Gatchina, and Russia forms the vanguard of revolutionary action in Europe.
The Communist Manifesto had, as its object, the proclamation of the inevitable impending dissolution of modern bourgeois property. But in Russia we find, face-to-face with the rapidly flowering capitalist swindle and bourgeois property, just beginning to develop, more than half the land owned in common by the peasants. Now the question is: can the Russian obshchina, though greatly undermined, yet a form of primeval common ownership of land, pass directly to the higher form of Communist common ownership? Or, on the contrary, must it first pass through the same process of dissolution such as constitutes the historical evolution of the West?
The only answer to that possible today is this: If the Russian Revolution becomes the signal for a proletarian revolution in the West, so that both complement each other, the present Russian common ownership of land may serve as the starting point for a communist development.
Now 1882 didn't turn into a revolution in Russia and there were several false starts like in 1905, but eventually it did finally happen. However seemingly with Lenin's New Economic Policy, both scenarios discussed ended up needing to happen. The Russian Revolution was both Communist and they felt it impossible to transition straight into Communism and thus had to allow some kind of bourgeois property relation to develop, and then later on had to eliminate this thing they created themselves in a rather unfortunate series of events. Additionally while the Russian Revolution did prove to be a signal for the Western proletariat to have their revolution, the proletariat revolution failed. In the spirit of this discussion I'm going to be argue that these were not separate incidents but rather the failure of the western proletariat's revolution is why Lenin implemented the NEP in 1922, in part because of internal rebellions calling for these things and because the international revolution seemingly failed resulting in a loss of hope that the western proletariat would in some way save them, which had to result in some kind of proletarian vanguard party lead bourgeois state emerging on the fly. Stalin would later have to undo this both these consequences in the events he is most criticized for, as in addition to reversing the NEP with collectivization, he undid the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk when as Molotov said "One kick from the German army and another from the Soviet Army put an end to this ugly product of Versailles" in regards to Poland. Polish independence being quite the unfortunate sacrifice here considering how supportive of it Engels was in the 1892 Polish Preface the the Communist Manifesto.
But the rapid development of Polish industry, outstripping that of Russia, is in its turn a new proof of the inexhaustible vitality of the Polish people and a new guarantee of its impending national restoration. And the restoration of an independent and strong Poland is a matter which concerns not only the Poles but all of us. A sincere international collaboration of the European nations is possible only if each of these nations is fully autonomous in its own house. The Revolution of 1848, which under the banner of the proletariat, after all, merely let the proletarian fighters do the work of the bourgeoisie, also secured the independence of Italy, Germany and Hungary through its testamentary executors, Louis Bonaparte and Bismarck; but Poland, which since 1792 had done more for the Revolution than all these three together, was left to its own resources when it succumbed in 1863 to a tenfold greater Russian force. The nobility could neither maintain nor regain Polish independence; today, to the bourgeoisie, this independence is, to say the last, immaterial. Nevertheless, it is a necessity for the harmonious collaboration of the European nations. It can be gained only by the young Polish proletariat, and in its hands it is secure. For the workers of all the rest of Europe need the independence of Poland just as much as the Polish workers themselves.
(The call for "full autonomy in a nations own house" is probably worth explaining. Nations that should be autonomous are nations which can be autonomous all on their own without international meddling. Engels was notoriously against all the south slavs for their pan-slavism because their independence was necessitated by interference from Imperial Russia, in part because he was still mad about the revolutions of 1848 not working out. He was even still mad at them 34 years later when he reaffirmed Polish independence alongside Irish independence as the most crucial national struggles to support. The reason being that Poland rejected pan-Slavism and was instead independently nationalist. That Poland could stand alone (and more importantly that Polish agitation threatened three reactionary imperial monarchies in Germany, Austria, and Russia at the same time. Ireland being important to screw around with the bourgeois British Empire as Marx and Engels increasingly saw the absentee revenues the British ruling class generated for themselves in Ireland as being the key to their parliamentary political dominance in England against both lower class and anti-imperialist challenges which were often the same thing) is why Polish independence was so supported. Standing alone is important because autonomous nations can switch between the rule of various classes without the risk of foreign interference on the part of imperialist reactionaries putting things back the way they were to protect their sphere of influence. The issue is that Polish independence ended up being a thorn in the side of the revolution when Polish independence was granted through Wilsonian liberal internationalism and during the Russian Civil War the Red Army tried and failed to retaliate against Poland when they joined forces with the Entente Liberal Imperialists in the Soviet-Poland War.
For NATO fans the opposition to NATO comes from this concept of being against spheres of influence, with a preference for complete independence. The Soviets or even Russia joining NATO however transform the institution from an American sphere of influence into just some vague "nobody invade anybody else okay guys thanks" treaty which is what it is sold as. So long as Russia is not included in NATO it fails to fulfill its stated purpose, and it must be opposed because it does not protect the independence of the nations within it, rather it makes them subservient to the United States, and the counter-balance of Russia inside the block is sufficient that the nations within it could seamlessly transfer between spheres of influence, or more importantly, not be in anyone's sphere of influence by successfully playing the US and Russia off each other, which puts each nation in a position to pursue development with little risk of the alliance being used to punish them. In fact if say Luxembourg decided to go rogue it could even use the NATO treaty to argue that anyone infringing upon them should be subjected to retaliation by all the other members, and now they have a socialist Luxembourg in the middle of Europe and they can't do anything about it because the treaty guarantees their independence with multiple dozen moving parts so long as Luxembourg doesn't militarily invade anybody. However if the organization is nothing more that an American political block with US bases every where, clearly the US would be able to pressure people into recognizing the socialist Luxembourg as illegitimate in some way and argue it can be invaded without requiring everyone come to its defense. So NATO good if Russia included and US bases removed, an in NATO Russia still isn't a threat to even Estonia if dozens of European countries are required to defend it, and that isn't even considering a late arrival of the US and Canada when they finally cross the Atlantic. The problem with NATO is that it is clearly an unofficial loosely held US empire, it stops being a problem when it is no longer this)
This whole confused mess could have been avoided had the world revolution not failed. This circles back to the Russian and German revolutions and how they were not united. Therefore the position of those labelled Nazbol is attractive merely for the sake that it would have united these two disparate revolutions. The success of either was reliant on the success of the other. The prior Bolshevik position of Peace Without Annexations or Indemnities would permanently lock in the Russian and German revolutions together in a mutual opposition to the bourgeois treaties, a pact of blood to oppose the pacts signed in ink.
Additionally opposition to the indemnity aspect of the treaty of Versailles would have been in fidelity to the revolutionary history of the Paris Commune which inspired the notion of the dictatorship of the proletariat in 1871, which was prompted in part by opposition to the burden of the reparation payments imposed on France by Bismark in response to Napolean III's failed invasion being placed on the people of France by the bourgeois government that signed that treaty. On a global scale while the opportunity for revolution by the proletariat refusing to enter World War One was squandered by the Social Democrats granting their permission, the proletariat could instead refuse to exit World War One by not granting their permission for acceptance of the bourgeois treaties just as the Paris Commune refused to accept Bismark's treaty.
Indeed opposition to the bourgeois Treaty of Trianon served as the basis for cooperation between the Nationalists and the Communists in Hungary, who unlike the Luxembourgists in Germany, were internationally aligned with the Boshelviks in Russia with the establishment of the Hungarian Soviet Republic. The alliance however broke down with the establishment of the Slovak Soviet Republic as the Hungarian nationalists questioned why they were participating in the Hungarian Red Army if they were just going to be liberating other countries, this ended up not even being that relevant of a dispute seeing as Slovakia was never fully captured and the Czechoslovak army ended up recapturing it in a month and so the issue only lasted from June 1919 to July 1919. However it exposed the core obvious problem with the alliance between nationalists and communists, as the full Petrograd formula was "peace without annexations or indemnities, on the basis of self-determination of the peoples" so the nationalists opposed to treaties were not going to like it when the second part got implemented later.
Lenin and Stalin ran into a similar issue when Stalin opposed Georgian self-determination in 1922 and wanted them to instead join Russia, with the comical situation of Stalin calling the Georgian Mensheviks "nationalist-socialists" and the Russian Lenin accusing the Georgian Stalin of being a Russian nationalist-socialist in response. We can clearly see that there are vastly differing views on the questions of nationality all over the place and there was no one line being taken, with Hungary and Germany taking vastly different views in regards to the treaties and cooperation with nationalists, to their own unique sets of problems later on with them.
The vastly different ways everyone was handling these issues is why I argue that the best principle would have been to have no principles at all. The only communist principle in regards to nationality is international cooperation. Indeed while you had Communist revolutions in German, Hungary, and Russia, the common thread uniting them of opposition to the bourgeois treaties would have also united them with the liberal Kemalist revolution in Turkey, thus completing the alignment of all revolutionaries in the central powers and Imperial Russia against the rest of the entente attempting to impose the bourgeois treaties, in effect adding Russia to the central powers after the imperialist war had turned into a civil war in all four imperial monarchies. That Turkey was in a vastly different stage of revolution than the other three would be irrelevant as these revolutions would still be mutually supporting of each other, and the Communists could rest assured safely knowing that while differing countries might be in different stages of revolution, they had the advantage over all others in knowing the ultimate end result of all their revolutions even if the people operating in them might not know it themselves.
The Communists, therefore, are on the one hand, practically, the most advanced and resolute section of the working-class parties of every country, that section which pushes forward all others; on the other hand, theoretically, they have over the great mass of the proletariat the advantage of clearly understanding the line of march, the conditions, and the ultimate general results of the proletarian movement.
As such the notion that one needs to be politically Communist to participate in the revolution is false. So long as a state of revolution remained the stages of the revolution could continue moving forward. If Turkey was not materially ready for it, that need not matter so long as the Kemalists were willing to join in an anti-imperialist block in the mean time, which they were willing to do until the Soviets later started looking at the straights with desire which eventually pushed Turkey into the arms of NATO where it remains to this day. However at the time the Soviets and Turkey were quite friendly despite their obvious ideological differences merely based on this mutual geopolitical interest in so-called anti-imperialism. This anti-imperialism was selective however, with the "Mountain Turks" and "Mountain Russians" being sacrificed for it, but the benefits of not having principles means you don't exactly have to care about that. Ataturk can make poutine out of the Kurds all he wants if he remains staunchly anti-imperialist on an international level. This gross cynical realism while obviously questionable is still consistent with Revolutionary History as all prior revolutions do not stand up to moral scrutiny when they are viewed in this way. In fact at the twilight of the 1848 revolutions Engels himself called for the Hungarians to wipeout the "counter-revolutionary" Slavs, while this is obviously not something we should want to have happened, and we definitely should not ever do this if we ever find ourselves in a position to make those decisions, it is important to understand the reasoning behind why he was saying those things, that it is the continuance of the revolution itself is both the most important thing, and something that is largely out of anyone's control in the Hegelian sense of Historicism.
The Magyar cause is not in such a bad way as mercenary black-and-yellow [colours of the Austrian flag] enthusiasm would have us believe. The Magyars are not yet defeated. But if they fall, they will fall gloriously, as the last heroes of the 1848 revolution, and only for a short time. Then for a time the Slav counter-revolution will sweep down on the Austrian monarchy with all its barbarity, and the camarilla will see what sort of allies it has. But at the first victorious uprising of the French proletariat, which Louis Napoleon is striving with all his might to conjure up, the Austrian Germans and Magyars will be set free and wreak a bloody revenge on the Slav barbarians. The general war which will then break out will smash this Slav Sonderbund and wipe out all these petty hidebound nations, down to their very names.
The next world war will result in the disappearance from the face of the earth not only of reactionary classes and dynasties, but also of entire reactionary peoples. And that, too, is a step forward.
A key fact you will observe is that they are often quite over eager in announcing the impending revolution. For instance The Magyar Struggle was published in January of 1849 in Marx's Newspaper, and Louis Napoleon was elected President of France in December of 1848. It seems as if they might have thought that this would have been more significant than it actually turned out to be. This kind of made sense though because Louis Napoleon's main opponent in the election was Louis-Eugene Cavagnac who lead the army to suppress a worker's uprising in Paris back in the "June Days" of 1848. Additionally the Hungarians did not do this, instead they adopted cultural assimilation policies called Magyarization, and late in the revolution into 1849 while the Russian and Austria Imperial armies were barring down on them they adopted minority right protections to try to win them back. However they were ultimately unsuccessful in repelling the Russian invasion regardless of any attempts at outreach.
What I find notable about this is that Engels essentially predicted the sides of the "next world war" (albeit there was a world war in between) that would wipeout entire peoples, but somehow ended up reversing the reactionary and revolutionary sides, as an Austrian German and the Hungarians did engage in a war against the Slavs, but because somehow the "poles of revolution" did somehow invert and head outwards from Russia like Engels said the Slavs supposedly wanted, that war was against the revolution instead of for it.
There is no country in Europe which does not have in some corner or other one or several ruined fragments of peoples, the remnant of a former population that was suppressed and held in bondage by the nation which later became the main vehicle of historical development. These relics of a nation mercilessly trampled under foot in the course of history, as Hegel says, these residual fragments of peoples always become fanatical standard-bearers of counter-revolution and remain so until their complete extirpation or loss of their national character, just as their whole existence in general is itself a protest against a great historical revolution.
Such, in Scotland, are the Gaels, the supporters of the Stuarts from 1640 to 1745.
Such, in France, are the Bretons, the supporters of the Bourbons from 1792 to 1800.
Such, in Spain, are the Basques, the supporters of Don Carlos.
Such, in Austria, are the pan-Slavist Southern Slavs, who are nothing but the residual fragment of peoples, resulting from an extremely confused thousand years of development. That this residual fragment, which is likewise extremely confused, sees its salvation only in a reversal of the whole European movement, which in its view ought to go not from west to east, but from east to west, and that for it the instrument of liberation and the bond of unity is the Russian knout — that is the most natural thing in the world.
However a lot can apparently change in almost 100 years. Russia was once seen as the bastion of reaction celebrated by the reactionaries everywhere for having invaded Hungary to put down the 1848-9 revolution, but then became the center of revolution, taking that spot from France which didn't really participate in the Revolutions despite the 1917 mutinies defused in June by Philip Petain by reassuring the soldiers by calling off the offensives that were intended to try to reassure the Provision Russian Government from the February Revolution to stay in the war and who launched the "Kerensky Offensive" in July which prompted the unsuccessful "July Days" Bolshevik uprising before the later successful October Revolution.
The absence of French participation beyond this is remarkable given how much they played a role in other revolutions and also remarkable how it was later Vichy leader Petain himself who basically defused the situation by giving the soldiers what they wanted and ending the suicidal offensives. The difference between Petain and Kerensky here and that the Russian revolution had not yet gone proletariat at this point while France was dealing with its own situation coming up from the soldiers and that the Russian version of this happened only a month afterwards should probably be focused on more here, in addition to how the differing approaches countries took on simultaneous and similar events from 1917-1923 should be analyzed like how I am suggesting (Comprehensive Revolutionary History of World War One when? Honestly I might write it at this point, issue is wikipedia as sources is probably not the greatest, and wikipedia article bouncing is how I'm formulating these connections as it requires an extremely shallow understanding of a lot of things that people with deep understandings of those things would all reject because I'm ignoring intricacies, despite ignoring intricacies being the entire point as intricacies are caused by random eddies and chaotic currents, and so must be ignored if you want to get a sense of the overall direction things are going, although admittedly I feel myself getting a bit schizo when I assert random concepts whole cloth that nobody has ever used by anyone besides me as you will see with the term "global political magnetic field collapse")
Since the Russian Revolution the apparent "pole of reaction" where global reactionaries collect as their refuge that Russia represented seemingly shifted to the United States for the Cold War after the pole reversal and global political magnetic field collapse manifesting in the out of place auroral borealis of the inter-war period and world war 2. It would be reasonable to assume that it would be just as possible for the United States to become a new center of revolution in the way Russia took that position from France despite Russia being the most reactionary power of anyone before that happened.

2023.05.30 21:36 KieShadowalker Need help finding a specific afterlife school manga

I'm trying to find a specific manga for my niece, but I don't remember what it's called.
The story is about a human girl who wakes up in front of a highschool in the afterlife. The school is for redeeming souls of the dead, and most of the characters are monsters or half-humans. I remember that one of the main characters is a tall blond boy with antlers, and I also remember that they leave the school at some point to search through the forest and almost get eaten by monsters/demons.
No one in the school can remember their lives, but they each get back pieces of their memories back over time.
I also remember there being this feeling that the main character did something terrible to end up at the school, but I don't think I read far enough to find out what.
I believe it's both a manga and anime, but it may just be one or the other.

2023.05.30 21:32 Psycik99 6mo - Progress, but difficult to put down and early wake up

We recently (1 week ago) started sleep training our 6 month old baby boy. Overall it is going as expected/better than expected but we have 2 challenge areas I'd love advice on. (Details on his sleep, what we're doing at the bottom of the post)
Appreciate any advice in the 2 areas - working on him getting to sleep sooner & extending the main sleep another hour or two
Background & Our Process He slept in a Snoo until recently. He was a great sleeper going through the night without waking/bottle or even much soothing from the Snoo until his 4 month regression. Even as we got out of the 4mo regression, his sleep never really recovered. 2-3 times a night he'd wake up, want to be soothed, and then go back to sleep. After that went on long enough we decided it was time to sleep train.
Naps He is a short napper and always has been. We've napped in the crib so he'd be used to that space, but even on the occasional snoo nap they'd only be marginally extended. He does 30-45 minutes as a nap, and as such, he's still on a 3-4 nap a day schedule. Wake windows are 1.5/2/2/2/w. We're working to extend that last one to 2.5. He gets visibly tired (and fussy) at the end of each of these wake windows.
Sleep Training He's set up in his nursey - white noise, blackout curtains, and is in his crib. We're doing what would be the wave method I guess, going in after 5 minutes of crying, resetting the clock if he's quiet for 10-15 seconds or longer. When we go into the room, we put a hand on the chest, tell him good night and we love him and do 1 'shhhh' and then leave. The visits typically seem to amp him more vs. soothing him or calming him.
He takes 45-60 minutes to initially fall asleep. Once he does, he has been sleeping until 5. He occasionally will cry at night, but almost always self-soothe within 5-7 minutes. At 5, he'll wake, he won't self-soothe and he'll cry pretty much as long as we'd let him. If we do a small feed, he'll go back to sleep for an hour or so.

2023.05.30 21:00 The_Fallen_1 [THJVerse] Arcane Starfarers - ep 37 - Welcome committee

First / Previous / Next
-----------------------------
Daniel patted Corporal Seling’ten on the back as he took over the console on the bridge from him, preparing for the day ahead. He checked all the readouts and found that they were all roughly what he was expecting, so he settled down as Hannah'rah did the same next to him.
"Good morning, everyone," Captain Harris began, addressing the whole bridge. "Word has just gone out that all ground operations have concluded, and everyone and everything is safely up in orbit. We're just waiting for confirmation before we depart the system. Make sure you're all ready to jump."
The bridge chorused an affirmative, and Daniel quickly checked his sensors to find them no different to normal, before he looked over his shoulder to Milla, who was apprehensively taking her seat in her humanoid form. A few moments later, the neural interface built into her chair began to extend sensors and non-invasive probes around the back of her neck and the top of her head, and she closed her eyes as the system ran through the standard checks. After a couple of minutes had passed, she nodded to the Captain, confirming she was ready.
"Oprin, I suggest taking one of the spare seats at the back of the room. Passing through a portal can be disorienting the first few times," Captain Harris warned the Langan.
"Of course, thank you for the warning," Oprin replied, sitting down and staring at the planet on the screen.
"Captain, transmission from the Batlow," Lieutenant Commander Sentrela informed her.
"Attention all ships, this is Vice Admiral Braun, we will be jumping in five minutes. Make sure preparations are complete by then," the comms announced.
“Signal our acknowledgement,” the Captain ordered. “Set the ship to jump alert.”
Daniel quickly glanced at the alert lighting as it suddenly lit up with a purple hue, and a single audial alert sounded, indicating the fore and aft compartments should be exited, and airtight doors sealed. The safety precautions were almost always irrelevant, but due to the increased strain on Gaters when jumping large ships, people were moved to the safest place on the ship in case of a failed jump, just in case the initial mana spike of the ship entering the portal disrupted the Gater, or they ended up flagging under the prolonged strain of the full length of the ship being transported.
“Affinity, perform standard jump checks,” Captain Harris instructed the VI.
“Affirmative, Captain,” Affinity replied. “Gater link established. Coordinates locked. All personnel are within safe boundaries. Mana levels are optimal. All systems report green. Final readiness is up to the Gater.”
“Ready,” Milla confirmed.
“Signal the fleet that we’re ready,” Captain Harris ordered.
Daniel looked at his sensors, reading the outputs to see if anything looked off with the other ships, but everything looked within normal parameters. He did notice a sudden spike of EM radiation from the direction of the planet’s moon for less than a second, but when he scrutinised it with other sensors, he found no signs of anything out of place, and a thorough scan with the gravitational sensors confirmed that there was nothing there. He logged the reading for it to be investigated at a later date in case the sensor was malfunctioning after being exposed to heightened radiation for a while, and then looked up as a series of mostly purple flashes appeared on the screens around him as the fleet prepared to jump.
He looked back at Milla as a faint purple portal opened within the ship’s shields, noticing the fierce level of concentration on her face. After a few moments, the ship began to slowly edge forwards, and Milla began to grit her teeth as the prow pierced through the portal, but the system didn’t send out any warnings of portal fluctuations, so the ship continued forwards. Before too long, the purple boundary reached the bridge, causing a flash in the back of Daniel’s eyes, and it carried on to the rear of the ship. He focussed back on Milla to find that she was hyperventilating, and the instant the all clear signal was sounded, she slumped backwards in her chair as the strain lifted off her mind suddenly.
Daniel immediately got out of his chair and ran over to Milla, catching her before she fell out of her chair and alerting everyone around them that something wasn’t right. Captain Harris immediately turned her attention to them, cutting herself off part way through confirming their location. He quickly checked Milla’s pulse and breathing, confirming that she wasn’t in a serious condition. With the Captain’s help, he lowered her down onto the floor, and a medical team rushed onto the bridge, seemingly alerted by another member on the bridge. They performed a few checks of their own, shifted Milla onto a stretcher, and rushed her off to the infirmary.
“Report to the fleet that our jump was successful, but our Gater was incapacitated,” Captain Harris ordered, breaking the silence of the bridge as Daniel returned to his seat.
“Copy that, Captain. Two freighters are reporting the same situation,” Lieutenant Commander Sentrela replied. “Apparently the spike of radiation hitting the spell-based radiation shields once the last tech-based shield emitter passed through was too much for them to bear, and the strain rendered them unconscious.”
“That matches what I’m seeing in the jump data,” Commander Santlen’coln told the Captain.
“Alright, there’s not a lot we can do about that now, and Milla is being taken care of, so we should proceed with the task at hand,” Captain Harris told everyone, turning her attention to the rocky planet nearby, which was covered in large bodies of water and had a noticeable Earth-like atmosphere. “Follow the fleet to the station-”
“Captain, I’m detecting multiple portals opening up nearby,” Daniel warned her as he noticed the sensor spikes. “All but one are Navy transponders…. Captain, it’s The Providence.”
“... Deities…” Captain Harris mumbled.
“... Captain, we’re receiving a transmission from The Providence,” Lieutenant Commander Sentrela warned her. “It seems to be different from the one the rest of the fleet is receiving.”
“Let’s hear it,” she replied.
“Greetings, crew of the Trailmaker, this is Celenamartra speaking, though I am not the only Deity present,” the comms announced as the feed of a gigantic green Dragon appeared on the main screen, adorned with a moderate amount of gold jewellery as she sat upon a padded cushion. “Firstly, I’d like to congratulate you on your successful mission. Rescuing another species from extinction is no small feat, even without any major hiccups along the way.”
“You honour us, Goddess,” Captain Harris replied, bowing her head.
“Secondly, I’d like to request permission to come aboard.”
“O- of course!” Captain Harris agreed, locking up firmly.
“Thank you, Captain Harris. You are clear to enter our perimeter for docking,” Celenamartra informed her, cutting the comms.
“... Lieutenant Commander Skrnumm, take us in.”
“... Aye, Captain,” the Dwarf replied, slowly piloting the ship towards the four kilometre long ivory and gold ship, as much a work of art as it was a functional transport.
“Lieutenant Commander Sentrela, what were the other ships told?” Captain Harris asked.
“They were thanked and instructed to head to the station,” Lieutenant Commander Sentrela explained.
“Right. Let’s see what happens. Prepare the guard of honour.”
-----------------------------
Daniel stood next to Hannah’rah near the end of the assembled guard of honour, facing straight forwards and listening out for the faint clunk of the airlock doors opening, and catching the sight of a silver Dragon with an artificial wing boarding the ship in a smaller form, followed by what was obviously Celenamartra behind them, with another silver Dragon following up the rear. The procession stopped shortly after boarding the ship, as the Goddess and the Captain exchanged words outside of Daniel’s earshot, and it then resumed, proceeding onwards until the Goddess stopped right in front of Daniel.
“Daniel Hardbrooks, Hannah’rah, please follow me,” Celenamartra requested, her voice soft but with an underlying tone that made them both eager to comply.
Hannah’rah stepped forward without a second thought, but Daniel blinked in disbelief, before suddenly coming to his senses and falling in next to Hannah’rah behind the Goddess. They continued on, quickly reaching the end of the guard of honour, but continuing on deeper into the ship.
“Left here,” Celenamartra instructed her forward guard, turning the group around a corner. “Ok, no need to keep it as formal anymore, and there aren’t any dangers on this ship.”
The guards turned into their humanoid forms and headed to the back of the group without a word.
“Hannah’rah, it’s been a few years, how are you doing?” the Goddess asked.
“I’m doing fine, thank you. I’m sure you already know all the details though,” Hannah’rah replied. “How are you doing?”
“I am doing well as well, thank you. I even managed to lug my main body out here,” the Goddess chuckled.
“... What…?” Captain Harris almost inaudibly mumbled.
“My Mother works for her Champion, so I spent a lot of time around the Goddess as I grew up,” Hannah’rah quickly explained.
“That you did,” Celenamartra confirmed, heading towards the next corner and poking her head around. “Oprin Asten, how nice it is to finally meet one of your kind in person.”
There was a sharp yelp from around the corner as Oprin realised she had been found out, and she slowly appeared from around the corner. “Sorry if it seemed like I was hiding.”
“It’s fine, you were just curious but nervous, I understand,” the Goddess assured her as the group began to walk again. “I’m Celenamartra, and yes, I am a Deity, though not as how you would describe one, am I right?”
“... I don’t think so. To us, a Deity is something fundamental to life, like our star, water, air, and soil.”
“I see. And by our definitions, a Deity is a being with the ability to permanently alter the laws of reality, and does not conform to the normal standards of mortality. For example, this body is little more than a puppet, as my true self doesn’t exist in the material world, nor does it really exist anywhere in particular, it just does. This is my original body though, so while it is effectively little more than a puppet, it is special to me.”
“Original body?” Oprin asked.
“I was once mortal myself, uncountable numbers of millennia ago, long before even the Dwarves first worked metal. This body is the one I was born with, and I’ve kept it alive, even after my ascension. I must apologise for cutting our conversation short, as there is something I must do now, but I promise we can talk more after. Follow me if you wish.”
“That’s ok, thank you for your time,” Oprin replied, glancing at Daniel as she joined him.
The Goddess led the group further into the ship, quickly arriving at the infirmary, and her two guards took their positions either side of the door. One of them flagged Captain Harris and Oprin to wait outside, while the other waved Daniel and Hannah’rah through behind the Goddess. Once inside, all the medical staff quickly stopped what they were doing and stared at the new arrivals.
“Thank you, everyone, for all your hard work. I ask for some privacy with the patient, if that is not disruptive?” Celenamartra requested.
“Of course, Great Keeper of the Forest,” Dr Leresan replied, bowing before her and making Daniel remember that despite being a Dragon, she was strongly associated with nature and life.
Daniel was unsure of what to do now though, as formality made him want to leave the room with the medical staff, but all other signs indicated that he should remain here with the Goddess. He looked up at the Dragon, finding her staring at him, as if expecting an answer.
“Uhh….”
“Thank you for saving the life of my Granddaughter, Daniel,” the Goddess repeated. "The incident with the Ridgerider would have turned out much worse if you and the Marines didn't board that ship and save everyone."
"Oh, you're welcome. It was just a part of my duty," he replied.
"That may be, but you saved her when I could not interfere, and I am truly grateful. If there is anything I can do for you, let me know," she offered.
"Thanks, but that's not necessary," he replied, wondering if being polite just cost him an amazing opportunity.
"Take your time to think and let me know if you change your mind," she replied, walking over to the side of the bed Milla was resting on.
"Is she going to be ok?" Hannah'rah asked.
"Yes, she's just in a very light coma from the strain and shock on her system. She'll wake naturally in a few hours, but the delay isn't necessary," Celenamartra explained, smiling as Milla's eyes slowly opened. "Don't get up too quickly. You need to rest."
"... Nan?" Milla asked. "... What are you doing here?"
"Originally the plan was to officially welcome the Langan, but when you had your incident, I decided to visit you first instead."
"What happened?"
"A high strain portal incident. You got the Trailmaker safely back in UPC space, so everything is fine now. Just rest."
"Ok…. Where's everyone else?"
"They weren't able to attend at such a short notice for various reasons, nor were they aware this might happen. Your friends, Daniel and Hannah'rah, are both here though," the Goddess pointed out, directing Milla's attention to them as she assumed her humanoid form.
“Hey, you two. I hope I didn’t scare you,” Milla told them as she sat up.
“Not too badly,” Hannah’rah lied, sitting down in a chair next to her bed.

2023.05.30 20:58 Mukurowl_Mist_Owl My 1 year and 3 Months (lv 3 to 20) campaign that switched from D&D to Pathfinder midway, just ended, here's what i learned.

It was an Eberron: Rising from the Last War campaign.
What i learned from the experience and comparisons that may help those that are changing systems, by topic:
GM PREP.
In general - It goes without saying that Pathfinder has easier prep. The amount of useful tables, references and sites like AoN and Pf2easy made my job easier and gave me lots of free time to work on details of the history instead of the rules.
About virtual tabletop - During the experience we used roll20 for half the campaign and Foundry for the other half. Foundry just made the prep time even easier and the quality of the game overall spike. Modules like Pathfinder Workbench and some macros makes the game run faster and effortless. If your internet connection is good enough, i absolutely recommend foundry.
Encounter Building - Thanks to problems i will highlight in "Balance" section, during the D&D portion of the game, finding balance and setting difficulty was literally hell. Pathfinder guidelines help a lot with encounter building and it works, but i can't stress enough how much you should pay attention on what the Game Master Guide says about terrain and/or types of enemies. One of the moments my party got their asses handed back to them was during a medium difficulty fight against oozes, because at that moment they where 4 martials and only 1 caster.
Adventuring day - This came as surprise to me that the change made it harder for some GM's, but peharps its because the lack of an "adventuring day" is better for my style of adventure. Pathfinder makes it easier to have "only one big epic fighter" in a day, but its harder to figure out how many encounters you should throw at the party before a long rest. From what i learned, letting players make their own rythm takes this burden from your shoulder. If possible, avoid "races against time" until you figure out how many encounters you party can usually tank before running dry.
What i disliked and what i'll do in the future about prep - Only the way Pathfinder 2e handles treasure as a precise math that can makes thing harder or easier if you don't follow the guidelines to the letter. Magic item was a problem in D&D also, but there was no expectation for having them as they were optional. Luckly GMG already brings the solution with ABP(Automatic Bonus Progression) and i'll use it in future adventures.
Balance
Caster vs Martial - Lets just kick the controversy in the balls, shall we? Its no surprise to most experienced GM's that 5e is unbalanced as it comes when the theme is caster vs martials, to the point that playing a pure martial (no spellcasting) is considered nerfing yourself. Magic do be strong like that. In Pathfinder 2e on the other hand its seems that the new players in the community thinks its the other way around, but i would argue it's not. As said by The Rules Lawyer in one of his videos, in a fight between Casters and Martials, the winner is the dragon. It took a while and some "dying 3's" for my party to get it, but after some time they understood that casters and martials needed each other to not kiss the cold ground in every fight, after they understood that it was better to demoralize the enemy with that 3rd action so the caster could debuff or control more easily which would convert into a higher chance of crit, the fight became easier in general. So yeah, Martials or Casters? Teamwork.
Overpowered builds - That was the catalyst for the change of system. During the 5e portion of the game, the players would make a 2d4 +4 stack to all saving throws, a 1d4 bonus to all attack rolls, have spells that would lock enemies in place without any chance of fighting back and stunlocking single big melee enemies with Tasha's Mind Whip and movement. To even challenge them i would have to just throw away all the ""guidelines"" of balance 5e had and constantly risk TPK's. That drastically changed after we moved to PF2e, in a system where the "strongest exploit" i've heard off is a fighter using two gnome toys to trip enemies after a crit, it was easy to understand why i wasn't concerned at all with whatever the players built, even with all uncommon options open. Sadly it lead to a long... long... streak of complaints about "how weak i'm" coming from the Wizard player, but he deserves he's own category here. I mostly advise all GM's to set expectations when changing to PF2e, "Yes, you will be weaker than your 5e counterparts, that's made so you are required to use teamwork and clever tactics" and do not adjust any rule to buff anyone. What they say in this sub is true, don't homebrew things that alter the power of the players or monsters, it will have unusual and often disastrous effects.
High Level - It's possible to play Highlevel in PF2e, when in D&D you can't if the caster what they are doing. I don't know what to say here, on PF2e we have cool thematic feats like the psychic becoming a being of pure thought, or the Fighter cutting space itself to teleport, while in D&D the fighter gains his 4th attack while the Wizard can make a gold dragon army, become imortal and making anything in the universe fail saving throws on demand with a certain combination of Chronurgy Wizard and Shapeshifting into a Planetar. Literally unplayable.

General tips for players/GM and things to watch for
Consumables and Preparation instead of OP features - Buying consumables and having preparation was the difference between almost TPK'ing to a ghost and sending it to the shadow realm in 3 turns. Besides teamwork, its consumable and knowledge about what you'll be facing that will make things easier, keep that mind.
Toxic Behavior learned from 5e - After GM'ing both systems i realised how some of 5e mechanics and balance encourage some toxic behavior and/or rewards you for it. It's not a problem if you don't already have some, but it becomes one if you have and you are no long rewarded for it after changing systems. This was the case of our Wizard, which was severy rewarded by the 5e system for picking options that made him solve things without the help of anyone, lowkey metagame as hard as possible without being called out for it (what no Recall Knowledge does to a mf), and treat his martial companions as just "damage tools or damage sponges" creating a pathetic sense of superiority. Those traits bled into his personality, and when the system punished him for this mentality, it lead to a string of complaints. Sufice to say that i had lots of players (literally 4 of them) informing me that would no longer play with him in any other table. Be mindful of any toxic behavior you might have or see in your players.
Death comes - It's way easier to have a character death in Pathfinder 2e and way harder to ressurect them, it may be even impossible in some tables. Remember this and never forget hero points.
That's it, sorry for the long book and i hope this might help the GM's that are afraid to make the jump from D&D to PF2e.

2023.05.30 20:53 Economy_Truck_4243 Rose Tea & Cherry Wine [A medieval DnD type style roleplay](DISCORD RP ONLY)

Rose Tea & Cherry Wine [A medieval DnD type style roleplay] ☆NOT REPLACING ANYONE☆ Setting: Alternative Late 1800's to early 1900's Russia
In a world where normal humans and powerful beings are mixed among each other, war is waged. Rather than it being powerful vs the normal, it's normal vs normal. People with powers are used as weapons, arrested and forced onto the battlefield. The powerful people are traded, sent across ships and marching through fields to battle. Sometimes these trecks on foot take almost months. Soldiers are tasked with accompanying these powerful people to other battlefront. But there's a greater evil working against them. A sorcerer who is ambushing these traders and taking the powerful people to make his own army and rule the world.
In this story, one of the characters is accompanying a powerful person. Typically, it's frowned upon for them to bond with each other but they begin to anyone. The story follows them as they encounter new friends along the way as well as facing dangerous challenges with terrain and even worse- the sorcerer.
~
This will obviously be a multi-character roleplay. That being said, this means we will both be playing multiple characters. I'd like to keep this strictly OC. I currently have 7 of my own OCs lined up for this so if you could match that, I'd really appreciate it. If not, we could find a happen medium somewhere I'm the middle or maybe a few less and I'd be fine with that. As for my roleplaying style, I typically write a paragraph per character interacting in the rp.
I am 18, my age range for roleplay partners is 16-20. I just graduated high school literally last week. I go by any pronouns other than it/its and my timezone is EST. Sorry if this seems a bit straightforward, I'm just very particular about certain things.
Interested or have any questions? Send me a DM. I don't bite ^

2023.05.30 20:37 SlendrBear [TotK] Locating where some Memories take palce

Last night (est) I analyzed a few memories to figure out where they took place. My main goal with this was to see the geographical changes (if any) and if there were any ruins to be found. There are also these two shots which very clearly takes place in front of what will become the Shrine of Resurrection so I didn't feel the need to highlight it.
I had first done this in my timeline theory to compare the two Temple of Times.
I've discovered a good bit from doing this.

We tried hard to locate where Memory 11 The Demon King's Army takes place but it's hard to tell. It definitely looks like it could be near Death Mountain. Someone had suggested Breach of Demise but it just does not match up at all.
Overall the most important takeaways from this in my opinion are the lack of anything. There are little to no structures, and we can see Hyrule Field is more like Hyrule Forest. So many things are different geographically. This isn't a post about theories, but my two cents is that this all lends more evidence towards the memories taking place prior to MC/FS/OoT and post SS. Exactly at the founding of the kingdom like the game says it is.
Regardless of my theory, I'd love to hear everyone's thoughts on the changes and if anyone notices anything else! The Zelda team clearly has made another Hyrule on top of TotK's that they only used in the memories. I'd love to explore it in DLC but that's hopeful thinking.

2023.05.30 20:30 Echo3073 We went On an Investigation, but Something came back with us.

My name is Evaline and my sister who is vital to this as well is named Vivian and we are twins aged twenty-three. Yesterday we went on a graveyard investigation, and I don't think we came back alone.
We pulled up to the graveyard In Vivians beat up red bug. She shut off the car and looked over to me.
“I have a weird feeling, Evaline, are you sure you want to do this?” asked Vivian.
“Oh yeah everyone keeps telling me about this place!” I exclaimed.
As we exited the car and walked up to the property Vivian turned on the ghost box (A tool used for communicating with ghosts by scanning through radio frequencies and white noise).
The ghost box said one word very abruptly “STOP.”
We looked at each other with puzzled faces.
“Do you not want us here?” asked Vivian.
“STOP.’ Came through the ghost box again.
“Uh color me crazy but I think we should still go in.” I said.
Vivian looked at me for a moment and then agreed we heard one final “STOP.” as we entered and then it was dead silent for 15 minutes.
We were walking around when my sister Vivian stopped and looked at a specific tree. This tree is twisted looking literally it has two parts to it that twist together to make sort of an arch way.
“A woman is over there.” Vivian whispered and pointed towards the tree (Vivian Is a medium by the way)
“Well let’s go check It out.” I enthusiastically said.
As we reached the tree the ghost box said the name “ANNIE.”
Vivian Greeted Annie and asked her why she was there.
But I was more Interested In trying to find Annie’s headstone.
“Hey, ask her for her last name!” I shouted over to Vivian who gave me a thumbs up.
I walked further away scanning all the different headstones with my flashlight. Some of these guys are really old, like 17th century old.
“Maybe that’s why it’s so haunted.” I thought to myself.
As I looked up to scan the next headstone, I saw a figure of a man standing by a headstone. “Holy shit where'd he come from?” I thought “Hey Vivian do you see hi-” I cut off because when I pointed back to where I saw him no one was there.
“Okaayyy.” I said in a hushed tone “I’m just going to go walk over there and see what the headstone says.” I made my way over to the headstone.
“Oh no way Vivian come over here, look who I found!” I shouted
“What’s up, what'd you find?” Vivian asked excitedly.
She looked down as I shined my flashlight on the fading stone the words “Annie Forester Beloved Mother and Wife” were shown.
“ME.” Said the ghost box We both looked at each other. We normally don’t get very intelligent responses so this was a big deal.
“What happened to you Annie?” I asked “HUNG.”
“Oh Jesus, that took a dark turn.” I said
“Evaline, stop it.” Vivan shouted, "Can you tell us why?” she asked,
“WITCH.”
“Oh she must have been a part of the old witch hunts that happened all through England and Ireland.” Vivian said
“Yeah but why are you still here Annie?” I asked Nothing happened for a good five minutes before the response
“TO PROTECT” came through.
“Protect what Annie?” I asked another few minutes pass by before the ghost box says “THE LAND”
“Huh that's awfully sweet of you do you make sure the living are safe?” Asked Vivian
“YES” the ghost box replied almost Immediately
“LEAVE” It says.
“Why do you want us to leave?” I asked
“Yeah what's wrong Annie?” Asked Vivian
“HIM”
“Who is him?” Asked Vivian
“PLEASE GO”
Those were the last words the ghost box said for another twenty minutes
“Maybe we should go, it's been a while and we haven't gotten anything else.” Said Vivian
I Looked around the graveyard I had a bad feeling
“Yeah lets get outta here this place is starting to creep me out.” I said as I stood and shook myself off trying to get rid of the odd energy.
We packed up all of our things and headed to the entrance. We said a prayer so nothing negative would follow us and threw our bags in the trunk. As I opened the door I slumped down In the passenger seat.
“Phew.” I breathed
“We got some pretty good stuff from Annie. I just wanna know who the mysterious him is.” Giggled Vivian
The drive home was uneventful but I couldn’t shake that odd energy from my body.
“Hey Viv do you feel weird or is that just a me thing?” I asked looking over at Vivian
“Mmm yeah ever since we left I felt odd, hopefully it's just our nerves.” Vivian said with a warm smile. But something was hidden behind the warmth of her smile : fear.
We pulled up to the house and unloaded our bags onto the kitchen table. It's become sort of a ritual at this point, every time we finish an investigation we unpack and load in all the recordings to listen to with high quality noise canceling headphones. We also order some kind of takeout tonight's meal of champions was Chinese food my favorite.
I stirred together my orange chicken and rice as I pawed through the recordings settling on the third one when Annie mentions “HIM”. The recording fills my ears as I intently listen.
“LEAVE.” Says the ghost box
“Why do you want us to leave?” you can hear us asking
“HIM” the ghost box says
“Who is him?” Vivian’s voice says
I listen closely as silence fills the space
“I'm Him.” A deep voice says not over the voice box but right next to the recorder.
I screamed and jumped out of my seat throwing the headphones on the ground.
“What what what!” Says Vivian
“Oh hell no, that sounded like satan.” I said laughing In disbelief
I rewinded the recording so Vivian could hear it. I saw her face turn into a huge grin.
“Now this is solid stuff we have to go back there!” Exclaimed Vivian
“Yeah I'm down but you're reviewing the tapes next time that voice is creepy.” I said with a smile
“Deal!” Said Vivian as she stuck her hand out for a hand shake. I took it and shook hands.
“I'm gonna get ready for bed Viv goodnight!” I yelled as I walked away
“Goodnight!” yelled Vivian
I stepped into the poorly lit bathroom and turned on the shower
“That voice is seriously creepy.” I muttered to myself as I took out my High ponytail and let my dark brown curls bounce down to my shoulders. My hair always did look nice with my pale skin
“Thanks to you mom.” I said looking up at the ceiling
I stepped into the shower and started washing my hair when I heard something fall.
I opened the shower curtain to see the culprit my cat Leo
“Oh Leo you're going to be the death of me.” I puffed out closing the shower curtain again
Another crash comes from outside the shower curtain
“Leo Get ou-” I ripped open the curtain to find the toilet paper holder in the sink
I stared dumbfounded as to how my small cat could have body builder lifted the toilet paper holder into the sink.
“VIIIIVIAN” I screamed
Heavy footsteps pound down the hallway but no Vivian
“Vivian?” I called
Pounding assaulted the walls to the point they were vibrating as the footsteps continued
“VIVIAN” I endlessly scream for what seems like hours until the door bursts open and the walls stop pounding immediately
“Are you okay, what's wrong, what's going on?” Exclaimed Vivian with a very worried look.
“You didn't hear me screaming for you?” I sobbed
“No, I just now heard you and came in. What happened?” asked Vivian
I told her all of the events that had just occurred she looked towards the sink and back to me with a confused face
“The toilet paper holder isn't in the sink Evaline.” She said pointing towards the sink which was in fact empty
“What no I swear it was!” I exclaimed
“I believe you Evaline you never cry it's just odd try and get some sleep okay maybe you're really tired? Cooed Vivian
“Yeah maybe” I said
I finished my shower without any problems and climbed into bed.Covering myself with the plushy blanket I let sleep take me over.
“Evaline wake up!” Vivian yell whispered as she shook me awake
“What's going on?” I groggily asked and then I heard it pounding on the walls but it was everywhere The walls were all slightly shaking
“Is this what happened in the bathroom?” Vivian asked me
“Yeah pretty much just not as loud.” I said standing up I'm gonna go check it out stay her Vivian
“You're that white girl that dies in the horror movie.” Vivian said with a smirk
I shook my head and stepped out into the hallway. Literally all of the walls seemed to be buzzing with the pounding. I made my way past the family portraits and got to the back door slowly putting my hand on the door knob and twisting it till I quickly pulled it open and the pounding stopped. I Looked around the dark backyard and I noticed something: the figure of a man standing by our fence. I looked closer trying to get a better look it was definitely a man.
I turned around to grab the bat sitting on our porch.
“Hey buddy you better beat it!” I yelled, turning back with bat in arm to see he was gone.
“Weird.” I thought and went back inside the house. I closed the back door and turned to walk back to Vivian when I saw the shadowy man standing right in front of me.
“AH-” I started to scream but the air seemed to be sucked from my lungs and the only thing that came out was a small peep.
“I don’t like you creatures.” The man said in a voice I can’t even begin to describe. It wasn't human.
“But still you exist to only displease me.” He went on
“Who are you?” I stammered
“You wouldn't know the word but you gave a soul hope tonight which made her free of me so now I need another soul in return for the one you greedily took.” The man like thing said
“Annie?” I asked shakily
He made an odd gurgling crunching noise reminiscent of a laugh but sounded more like a garbage disposal.
“Obviously” he replied
“Now you're going to replace that soul.” He said calmly
“Evaline?” Vivian placed her hand on my shoulder
“Evaline Are you there helloooo?” Vivan said snapping her fingers in front of my eyes
“Yeah sorry Viv I just was thinking.” I replied
Now i'm writing this to you hoping someone out there knows what this thing is and how to get rid of it before I become the next soul to be taken by HIM.

2023.05.30 20:30 Parking-Lawfulness96 Considering a contract at Wake Forest

Hey there! I’m a travel nurse considering a contract at Wake Forest and I was wondering if anyone had any insights about the hospital itself?
Also recreation recommendations! I’m a 30F divorcee with no kids, a hamster, and a desire to explore! Love hiking, spending time at the lake, trying new food, and being social. Any ideas or input would be appreciated! Thanks in advance!

2023.05.30 20:30 borgnineisfine69 Bragging about how much longer your work day is than others is stupid, you're just point out that you're being taken advantage of by your employer.

Caveat: this only goes for people that aren't paid overtime or people that aren't self employed.
More often than not in the debate about the 9–5 or the 5 vs 4 day work week, there's always an army of "Oh yea!? Well try my 6am-8pm work day on for size!" or "Babies can't even handle a 5 day work week, try 6 days like me!"
Unless you're being paid mad overtime you are being taken advantage of by your employer. No one should be working that much, and if you are it's a clear sign that your employer needs to either hire more people or pay you way more money.
Furthermore there is a huge difference between office work and trades work. A 12 hour day in the office makes little to no sense and productivity will absolutely cap out at the 6-8 hour mark (unless you do copious amounts of coke) versus something like a truck driver where it's more expected and paid accordingly.
Don't fight about who works the most, fight together to argue down the expected amount of time people are expected to be at their desks or on their feet. You gain nothing by defending your boss's shitty decision to make your work day as long and brutal as possible.

2023.05.30 20:29 Unhappy-Classroom874 Any ideas on good paying nature jobs?

Didn’t think I’d ever be here but after being in a long term relationship and marriage, I’m 24 with a job I’m not a fan of (can’t go into detail about the work I do but I build boom booms for world military’s) and I really want a job in nature. I live in Az and love this state, my parents live up north in the forest and I love being up there and being in nature and I always have. I have no college education, been in manufacturing for like 6 years, and idk what to do. I’m lost, and hate waking up everyday and contributing to violence, and I just wanna take care of and help nature but idk how to do that or what direction to go in. Is there anyone out there that can help? Thinking about a job with the Forest Service. Advice?

Suspected Insurgents On India-Myanmar Border Allegedly Entered Manipur
The article says; A large group of suspected insurgents hiding in the hilly and forested India-Myanmar border in Manipur has allegedly entered the state, people familiar with the matter said. The centre, state government and security forces have been working hard to bring peace since ethnic violence broke out between the Meiteis and the Kukis on May 3.
In another news, the Home Minister and the Indian Army declared this as an ethnic clash to which they don't have any say on this. So, they are planning to withdraw from this whole war like situation worsening the condition. At this point, it should have been considered as a national threat but it seems that holding on to the powerful chair, whoever is holding is more important than fighting for the actual cause.
