Active vs All Terrain
2023.03.29 01:36 dc456 Active vs All Terrain
Hi,
I’m looking for a shoe/boot to wear when travelling, and Blundstones were recommended.
My use case is a lot of time walking and hiking, as well as driving. Hiking can be anything from gravel paths, to muddy hillsides, to clambering over wet boulders, and often for 10 miles a day or more.
Weather wise it really is a bit of everything, so ideally breathable in heat, and also usable in snow with extra socks. Water-resistance is really important as I don’t avoid the rain and mud, and if they do get wet crossing a stream they need to dry quickly.
Aesthetically I’d like to be able to wear them with shorts, but also dress them up for restaurants, etc. From photos I they’ll both do for this, just in slightly different styles.
Durability is not that important. Obviously they have to hold up during use, but I’d rather wear through the right pair of shoes annually than have the wrong pair last 10 years.
Finally, comfort is very important. All the above is no good if I feel like I’m carrying some concrete blocks on my feet.
The two styles that seem to stand out for all that are the Active and All Terrain.
The obvious differences to me seem to be the Active are lighter and probably more comfortable for daily wear, but don’t have the durability and grip of the All Terrains. I expect the All Terrains would probably be warmer too, so better in winter.
Does that sound about right? Have I missed anything?
If you had to have one pair, and could find yourself doing almost any activity in any climate, which would you choose?
Thanks!

2023.03.29 00:45 Independent_Bike_923 Average applicant gets average results......don't really know how to feel at this point.......
I might have to explain some stuff about myself to clear any potential confusions you may have, so do please read till the end.
General Info - Gender: Male
- Race/Ethnicity: Asian
- Residence: Asia (though I am a US citizen by birth so I think that would make me a domestic applicant? idk)
- Income Bracket: $100k/$200k+
- Type of School: private + competitive (one of the best in the city where I live) It only offers the British high school curriculum (Cambridge O and A levels).
- Intended major: Biology/Biological sciences (I plan to stay on the pre-medicine track)
- Note: I did apply to some combined BS/MDs (combined bachelors and med school programs) which guarantees you a spot in medical school unless you maintain your GPA and other stuff in undergrad. I'm not sure if I was even eligible to be considered in it because only one of the programs mentioned about details for selection criteria of oversea US applicants while the others weren't specific about this. (Only US citizens can apply to these type of programs)
- GPA: N/A (my school doesn't do GPAs, but I was able to calculate it on my own and came out at around 3.7-3.8 though I'm not entirely sure if it this accurate. In general, I did have straight A results for the past three years after a rocky start at high school.)
- Academic honors: distinction in my Biology O level examinations (top in the country) and first position in my school's Biology A level first year examinations (mocks + midterms exams)
- Standardized testing scores (SAT): 1450 (790 M, 660 RW)
Activities/Extracurriculars: - Took part in multiple MUNs (did get some small personal awards and was the marketing director for my school's MUN event once)
- participated in my school's community service society. (We would invite children from a nearby underprivileged community and do many activities with them)
- took part in a special internship and observer ship program at one of the best medical schools in my city (I collaborated with the medical school's community medicine society and was able to learn & discuss about various topics, attended lectures and was able to get a glimpse of medical school life. This lasted a few weeks and was really fun :))
- took part in a community outreach program at the same medical school (coincidentally it happened during my internship and observer ship. It was more of a community service activity)
- was part of my school's science society and our team once won runner up position at a local Olympiad (didn't get to participate too much in it though)
Letters of Recommendations: - Chemistry teacher: 9/10, he is honestly my favorite teacher. Since the start of my A-Levels he really motivated me a lot to do my best and I was able to strive in Chemistry under him (even though he spoke more in the local language here which I don't really understand very well). I was also among his personal favorite students in class and while I did not get to see what he wrote, I bet it was great. I still of course have to work hard for my A-Level CAIEs now and maintain my consistency in the subject.
- Biology Teacher: 7/10, he did not really know how to write it, so I sort of had to give him a rough draft but at the same time I was busy with my assessments and other things that I feel that I could've given him a better draft lol.
- Internship/Observer ship supervisor: 9/10, I had a good relationship with him and was able to work on so many things with him and his department. I am really glad he took out the time to write it out as he was really busy at the time :)
Essays - 8/10: I wrote about my motivation of doing medicine which came through by seeing the poverty and poor healthcare infrastructure in the country where I'm residing in. My parents and counsellors liked it, but I think it was a bit too general....
- 7/10: I had A LOT of supplements to prepare, especially for the BS/MD programs. They were not too bad but not too good either as most of them were aimed at my extracurriculars which was honestly one of my weaknesses in my application....
Interviews With the one and only WashU and I took my chance. I would give it a 7/10 as I feel like I could've asked more questions as my interviewer led the conversation more than I did.
Decisions (RD/EA/ED/Rolling) - University of Missouri-Columbia (Mizzou): Rolling - accepted and awarded with $22.5k scholarship.
- University of Missouri-Kansas City (umkc): RD - rejected by BS/MD program but accepted to regular undergrad.
- Maryville University of St. Louis - Rolling: accepted and awarded with 14k scholarship.
- Siena College: RD - rejected by BS/MD program but accepted to regular undergrad.
- University of Iowa: EA - accepted (scholarship yet to be specified)
- University of Pittsburgh: Rolling - waitlisted
- WashU St. Louis: RD - Rejected (this hurt me the most as my dad did his post graduate fellowship from here)
- John Hopkins: ED - Rejected (Didn't expect to get in anyways lmao)
- Case Western University: EA - deferred and then waitlisted after going into RD.
- NYU NYC (main campus): RD - Rejected literally just one hour ago lol while I'm writing this post (depressed though)
- IUPUI (Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis): rolling - accepted.
- Stony Brook University: RD - Accepted (might have a scholarship didn't check yet)
- University of Connecticut: RD - Rejected by BS/MD but was surprisingly accepted to undergrad with 19k scholarship. (Though it's still really expensive)
- St. Bonaventure University: RD - Rejected by the BS/MD program.
Waiting on: Duke, Yale (no hopes for these two in a realistic sense) and Saint Louis University (maybe might have a chance on this one) Personal things to add: So, I am from the United States but had to move to Asia a couple of years ago due to personal family circumstances. But the thing is that I've never felt adapted to the new environment and people here. It was and is honestly tough to make friends and develop connections here as I'm not too fluent in the local language either. This is the main reason that I feel like made my high school journey was quite turbulent. During my first two years I was a below average student in terms of grades (with a lot Bs and Cs) and found it hard to motivate myself to do more in extracurriculars. While the pandemic helped me change my academic strategies and perform much better in the remaining three years of high school, I just didn't put in the effort in my extracurriculars (which was due to the different environment and type of people here and the fear of not being to balance it out with my academics as I did not want to take any chances if my grades fell again).
You may also be wondering why I applied to some of the T25/T50 colleges too. Well, honestly, I only wanted to apply to Yale and Johns Hopkins (based on my personal interest even though I never stood a chance) but my parents kind of pushed me to apply to other top colleges too (as they thought I would have a good shot since I come from a pretty complicated Asian background and other stuff) But even despite that I feel like I should've gone test optional for these top colleges as the medians were clearly higher than 1450. However, my counsellor continued to persuade me to send them to these top colleges as it would make me a better applicant than those who did not submit (idk if that's true lol). I should've known better tbh as I was pretty clueless about this. But my extracurriculars were pretty weak too.
I plan to do medicine and now that I have some acceptances at some middle tier to average schools, I'll have to decide soon. I also have the option of doing medicine from the Asian country where I'm currently residing in (which unlike the US does not require any undergrad prior to med school and you can directly matriculate after completing high school). It also takes 5 years (vs 8 years in the USA) and is much cheaper too. But because of my experiences here in middle school and high school outside the classroom and realms of academics and with the lack of connections and issues I've faced, I'm kind of unsure if I want to even consider it here as med school life is really challenging.
Anyways, I've just always wanted to go back to the United States to not only do medicine but also to bring a change in myself both personally and for my family after living here in Asia and now I have the chance to do so (even though it might be a bit more expensive). I feel like I had the potential to do so much better, but I feel my personal circumstances really brought me down. I apologize if this all felt too personal and came across as being cringey and ungrateful. It's just that this has all been over my head for the past few months and did not have anyone other than my parents to discuss this with as I don't really have any close friends here and I thought this would be a great opportunity to share this with you all on this subreddit page which is mostly full of people with 1500+ SAT scores, perfect GPAs and stellar ECs (no hate to them though, they are honestly pretty motivating to me Haha).
I would appreciate any feedback from y'all!
Thank you and good luck with your applications everyone :))

2023.03.29 00:37 Polik61 How exactly did Mike help Lola in the first season?
Hi,
I just finished episode eight, season one (Identity crisis), where Mike at the end gets fake Harvard diploma from Lola. I do not get why did she made him this sort of favor.
From what I got, she wanted her relationship with her dad to be fixed, did Mike someone managed to do that and I missed it? Even if so, wouldn't she pay him back by helping with Harvey's and Louis embezzlement case?
Thanks for you insight.

2023.03.28 23:19 OfAshes [A Game of Chess] - Chapter 35 - Bridging the Gap
Story Teaser: Chess is truly an interesting game, even with only one board. Managing the wants of your pawns, the directions they want to go against the ones you need them to - it is said that the God of Chess was the only one who understood it properly, and, as everyone knows, all the gods died centuries ago, in the Thousand Years War.
But this game is different. 3 pairs of players with 3 boards stacked on top of one another, a single Wild Card crowning the final game. That Wild Card is Melony, a girl living in the dying City who abruptly finds herself thrown into a world that confuses past, future, and present. Who will be the victor, and what does it mean to win?
Chapter Teaser: Where there are impossibly border-accurate rivers, there are cool bridges!

IT WASN’T THAT THE City was quieter at night, but that it was filled with a different kind of noise. The lamps that were haphazardly dangling from any available windowsill or perch filled the streets with a soft artificial light, a sharp contrast to the dim silver starlight that floated down from above. Although there were perhaps not as many people wandering the streets, those that were out and about moved with a purpose, feet pounding into the dry concrete.
Melony was wary of the voices and the light, a habit born from too many nights spent walking back to her home in the half-darkness, but, despite this learned fear, she still felt… lighter at night. She always had, even though she couldn’t really explain why.
She wished Sora were here, with her bright green eyes and contagious smile, but she’d obviously been nervous about going into the Wilds. Besides, someone needed to stay behind and look after the Sector, a job that Tock had been doing alone for far too long. Though she and Samheim had their earpieces, Samheim had been unsure whether they’d work once they were in the Wilds.
“This way,” Mel said, making a sharp turn onto a side street. They were taking the South bridge out of the City, which was in Gemstone territory. Although it was a fair distance away from the Sector, it had the least amount of pieces scattered around it. Mel wanted to avoid unnecessary conflict right now, even if she
was making the first move.
Sora, Samheim, and Melony had plotted out a rather roundabout route to the bridge. The Gemstones’ active Sector, E1, was positioned directly to the right of the bridge, and Mel wanted to avoid going near it. That meant that the two of them, and Daederisha, were skirting around the bottom wall of the Inner City. Next, they’d turn South and head towards the bridge.
Mel breathed out and tried to steady her nerves, feeling the weight of the chessboard in her bag. She almost paused to take it out and check the layout of the pieces, but stopped herself before she could. “This was a bad idea,” she muttered, drawing Samheim’s attention.
“Is it?” he asked at the same time that Daederisha remarked,
Nah. Not much point in being a Wild Card if you don’t do anything, right? Melony sighed and tucked her hands into her pockets, feeling her hair swing behind her and her scarf shift on her neck. They’d weighed the pros and cons of this decision, but, in the end, rationality did nothing to combat the last-minute nerves that were sneaking up on her.
“Look, Mel, it’s fine,” said Samheim, making another turn onto a side street.
“We’re going into the Wilds,” she replied doubtfully, one hand on the shrunken version of Mohs’ staff and the other tightly gripping a flashlight.
Samheim shrugged. “It’s fine,” he said easily. “We’re prepared.”
Mel’s gaze shifted down to where his Enchanted pistol sat on his belt, along with several daggers, a flashlight, and a variety of other odds and ends. “Sam, you’re armed to the teeth and so am I,” she snapped.
“Yup,” he said. “What part of ‘we’re prepared’ wasn’t I clear about?”
Melony sighed, running a hand down her face. It wasn’t whether they were prepared or not, it was what they were preparing for. The Wilds were a dangerous place, and those who journeyed back and forth between them and the City, Wildsmen, often came back injured, or worse, not at all. The Wilds were… wild, for lack of a better word, and they only seemed to get more dangerous as the years went by.
They reached the bridge in what felt both like an eternity and no time at all. It wasn’t anything fancy; just a simple, slightly curved slab of stone that passed over the Border River and connected the City to the Wilds. Mel took one step across, then another, then paused.
There, on the Wilds side of the bridge, were two very familiar figures, one tall with a severe expression and one short and holding a staff. Mel barely constrained a snort and started forward again, gasped, and stopped, nearly pitching forward and off the bridge before Samheim caught her. She had closed her eyes with the onset of pain, and when she opened them, she had the odd feeling that she was somewhere else.
The bridge was embossed with grand designs carved from simple wood, inserted into the gray stone that made up the arch that was the bridge. The railings were tall and elegant, a far cry from the simple stone slab that now filled its place. In the rational part of her mind, Melony knew that she was still standing on that almost flat block of gray stone. Still, she couldn’t keep her mind from getting caught up in the torrent of emotions that this memory, if that’s what it was, was pouring into her. The world was dim and yet illuminated by a translucent blue haze; every object emitting a faint light and yet still shrouded in darkness. In the middle of the bridge stood a tall man, one that Melony recognized. She’d seen him twice before now. The first time, in the dream, had been when he died. The second, in a mural, had been when he was alive. This time, then, must be somewhere in between. On the other side of the bridge, the side that connected to the Wilds, she saw battle. There was battle on the bridge, too, Maradak wielding a sharpened sword that whistled through the air and looked far more suited for decoration than for combat. He looked tired, so very very tired, and Melony could see that his strength was fading. Unconsciously, her eyes not under her control, she followed his gaze to the other side of the River. She saw flashes of battle and magic, arrows flying through the air and runes glowing in a multitude of colors. It was a losing battle. Melony knew it, somehow, though whether the conclusion was carefully drawn from her surroundings or spoon fed by the memory that surrounded her was impossible to tell. As she watched, Maradak seemed to straighten with a realization. He stabbed his sword down, shattering the bridge. The noise was like an explosion, and she could see the monumental effort it took for him to destroy something of his own creation. Then, he was falling, and she was falling with him. “Maradak!” screamed a voice. Melony thought she might’ve recognized it from her first ‘vision,’ but she wasn’t sure. “Are you all right. You…” “...nearly drowned!” exclaimed Samheim, scowling. “Melony? Melony! Are you even listening to me?”
“No,” forced out Mel , pushing her eyes open. She was still standing on the bridge, Samheim’s quick reflexes having prevented her from tumbling over the edge. She gasped for breath, and the world quietly resumed its normal pattern. She shook her head, trying to expel the images she’d seen from overlapping onto what actually was, then took a breath and practically ran off the bridge.
“Vision,” she said weakly once Samheim followed her off the bridge. “Like the dream. But I was awake this time.” She took a few breaths to calm down, slowly returning her heart to its normal, steady rhythm, rather than the accelerated mess it was right now.
“I noticed,” grumbled Samheim, looking thoughtful for a moment. “I’ll make sure to pay attention in case it happens again. Shall we get going?”
Melony nodded, grateful to her friend, and spun Mohs’ staff, extending it. “Of course,” she said, smiling.
“Oh, you’re not going to invite us?” came another voice, and Mel stiffened. She’d completely forgotten about the two figures she’d seen while crossing the bridge, and she barely managed to stifle a laugh as Marcos glared indignantly at the two of them.
They were obviously being controlled by the Kings, but they’d probably follow even if Mel said ‘no.’ Besides, it would be nice to have the help in the Wilds. Mel would rather fall prey to a scheme of the Kings’ making than succumb to some danger lurking deep in the Wilds.
Oh, like you’d need one, remarked Daederisha, shaking Mel out of her thoughts. That was another point in the pair’s favor: the sword, although its loyalties were questionable, seemed to trust them.
You’re going to follow even if she says no, which she’s not going to. “Obviously,” said Therma easily, golden eyes calm and full of something like amusement. “What else would we be doing?”
“Not following us?” suggested Samheim, though it was obvious that he didn’t mind them coming along. Mel smiled as the group –
her group – started forward, pushing their way into the Wilds, Therma and Marcos bantering back and forth about something or other.
Still, even as they bounced their words off of each other, Mel didn’t miss the look of concern they directed towards her, or the worry in their eyes.

It would be inaccurate to say that Marsha was once again having doubts. That statement would imply that she had, at some point,
stopped having them, and only recently restarted.
No, it would be far more accurate to say that the intensity of Marsha’s doubts increased drastically as she leaned back in her chair, shooting a concerned glance at Simon. He mirrored the look, arms crossed over his chest.
“Is it…” Marsha started, swallowing in an attempt to soothe her parched throat. “Is it too much for her? The boundary between past and present? She is a mortal, after all.”
Simon shifted in his seat. “I’m sure he planned through this,” he said. “You can’t form a proper strategy without understanding the conditions you’re in.”
Marsha sighed, then hesitated, trying to properly form her thoughts into words. “We’re not dealing with technology, Simon. We’re dealing with chess, something that is innately magical. Odd things happen when different things are combined, and it would be impossible for
him to properly predict this.”
Her friend considered this for a moment, gray eyes twinkling. “It doesn’t seem to be harming her,” he said slowly. “And even if it were to happen in a dangerous situation, she has others to protect her while she recovers.”
Marsha tipped her head to one side, considering this. “True,” she said. “It might even be a benefit – knowing… knowing what happened.” Her voice barely even wavered at the second part of her sentence, but she could feel the press of a thousand emotions behind her eyes, threatening to spill over in tears and unkind words.
She wanted to scream. Wanted to throttle her past self and demand an answer for why she’d agreed to play along with this mad charade. Wanted to, for the millionth time, ask Simon why.
Why are you doing this? This can’t be fixed. She’d asked that question enough times to know exactly how he’d answer, though:
I’m not trying to fix it. I’m trying to make it better.
Marsha forced the thoughts from her head. She’d always been like this, making promises that she didn’t want to keep for the sole purpose of forcing herself to keep them. She didn’t want to do this, but, at the same time, she desperately wanted to help Simon, wanted this to succeed, wanted all the dreams she’d once had to come true.
Maybe that was why she’d made that promise to Allessa, all those years ago. A stupid, foolish promise. A promise that she regretted making. A promise she was so very desperately glad she’d made.
Maybe that was why she’d made this promise to Simon, too. What else was she going to do? Sit down and cry for another few centuries? Wait until everyone else died?
Maybe she was stuck in an endless cycle of lying to herself, and the promises were her desperately clinging to the truth.
Maybe…
No. Stop. Maybe she didn’t care why she’d made those promises. Maybe she should stop thinking about depressing things and focus on keeping those promises. Maybe she was dragging herself down into the depths of her mind and she should stop doing that, because no good would come from being stuck with herself for too long.
Maybe she should open her damn eyes before Simon started to wonder if she’d gone to sleep.
Marsha forced a smile, and it was easier than she expected. “No matter what way this goes,” she said, surprising herself, and probably Simon. “I think this was a good idea.”

2023.03.28 23:08 damnbeautifulday 42 [M4F] #LosAngeles - Best Case Scenario for an older guy and younger woman
Here's the best case scenario of how this goes, for me at least:
You can intro me to music I should be listening to, and you'll probably be nice and listen to the music I try to turn you onto once or twice.
I'll listen to you vent about your life, not as someone to tell you what to do, but as someone who's made all of the bad decisions before and isn't going to judge you for it.
You'll let me bitch about being old, and hopefully put me on and tell me I don't look that old at all.
Oh, and we're going to fuck.
And not fuck like I'm going to pump you a couple of times and roll over like your high school boyfriend did. We are going to learn each other's bodies. We are going to talk about all the dirty ideas and fantasies we have, without judgement, and even take a few for a spin. We are going to figure out what gets each other off. We are both going to cum hard, and not be able to wait to do it again. We aren't going to be afraid to acknowledge the sex is the real basis of this. And yeah, you are turned on by fucking an older married guy. And yeah, I'm turned on by fucking a hot younger girl. We are ok with being each other's little secrets, expressing our kinky desires, and sharing our dirty thoughts. We'll also laugh, smile, and enjoy each other's company along the way.
I'm 42, fairly attractive (5'8", dad bod alert), somewhat intelligent. I'm full of bad jokes and sharp wit. I love going down on a woman, and I love making them laugh and feel good about themselves. I don't take life too seriously, but I take the people in my life seriously, and don't fuck around with their feelings, boundaries, or emotions. I don't smoke cigarettes, but I do spank cute backsides. Please be in LA or close by.
If you've read this far, tell me, what is the best care scenario for what you were hoping to find on this subreddit?

2023.03.28 23:04 thefalsephilosopher MVA Experience (first pregnancy, first loss)
Hi all, there are some really good posts here about MVA (manual vacuum aspiration) but I wanted to add mine as well, since it was maybe a little different than others’. I am currently recuperating on the couch after having it done this morning, so it’s all still pretty fresh. I was about 7 weeks along and found out yesterday it was nonviable, but had been told a week prior that things weren’t looking quite right. Overall I’m glad I went with this option, and would go this route again if I had to. I was so nervous going into this that I was shaking and shook through most of the procedure, but it was nowhere near as bad or as painful as I anticipated. The procedure was performed in my fertility clinic by my RE.
I was prescribed Azithromycin 500mg (antibiotic) to take the night before the procedure. I was also prescribed Misoprostol 200mg x2 to be inserted vaginally 4-6 hours before the procedure. I experienced some light cramping from these, but nothing else. Finally I was prescribed some Naproxen 220mg (Aleve) to take an hour before the procedure. This was the only pain medication I received.
After an initial transvaginal ultrasound to locate everything, they inserted the speculum and cleansed the cervix with iodine. They then gave me a shot of lidocaine to the cervix, which I didn’t feel at all. They gave 3 more shots of lidocaine and I only felt the cotton swabs on the inside of my vaginal canal as they applied pressure to stop the bleeding from the shots. They then dilated my cervix (no pain, maybe some pressure) and inserted the tube from the vacuum/ big suctiony syringe thing. They suctioned everything out in two goes, made sure I wasn’t bleeding too much, and pulled everything out. They then performed another TV ultrasound to make sure they’d gotten everything.
I was told ahead of time that it was either the first shot of lidocaine or hearing the vacuum that was the worst part. In my case neither of these were true— I didn’t feel the shot, and the sound didn’t even register. The worst part for me was the actual suctioning, that felt like a very strong pinching and cramping higher up in my abdomen than I expected. Much worse than period cramps, but mercifully short. I was flexing the hell out of my hands because it was all I could do haha, but both times were less than 10 seconds each. Afterwards they removed the pads underneath me so I didn’t have to see all the blood. I laid on the table for another ten minutes or so while the Dr. cleaned up the removed tissue.
My husband was in there with me, though the extra chair in the room was positioned at the end of the bed/table, so he saw EVERYTHING. In the future I’d bring an eye mask because the lights were so bright that I ended up putting my pants over my eyes lol. I asked to see the sac once it had been removed, and since the Dr. was cleaning it for genetic testing I got a good look, though there wasn’t much to actually see.
What I also did not expect was how much lighter I felt emotionally immediately afterwards. I fully expected to be sobbing through the entire experience and for the rest of the day, but I felt like myself afterwards. I’d lost the pregnancy/ miscarriage tunnel vision that I’d been living in for the past several weeks in large part (I think) because I was no longer carrying around the hopelessness of this future life I’d been imagining these past few weeks.
Since being home there’s been very minimal bleeding and very mild period-like cramping. We were told we could try again in about 2-3 weeks when my hCG levels come down, at which point they would do another TV US to check for a follicle. He said I may or may not get a period when my hCG drops, because they removed all the tissue that a period would consist of. And that was it, it took about 30 mins mostly because the nurse forgot to prep a lot of stuff and had to keep running out to get them. My doctor talked me through the whole thing and kept checking in with me to make sure I was ok. Hopefully no one ever needs to read this, but if so I hope it can provide some reassurance to someone in a similar position.
TL;DR tolerable pain and discomfort, emotionally felt better afterwards
Edit: Also want to add, pee beforehand even if you think you don’t need to go. The pressure on your bladder from the speculum just hanging out there is enough to make you very uncomfortable for the entire thing.

2023.03.28 22:44 freshwaterfreshlife Seriously, how could anyone ever fall for this lockdown insanity? A fifth-grader could probably see through the absurdity. (A personal rant)
I would have loved to write this three years ago when lockdowns started. I'm doing it now. See it as my personal therapy that I didn't had in three years. This is long overdue for me. It's about all the arguments in favor of lockdowns we were being fed.
I’m actually not that well-read about the vaccines, the variants, transmission statistics and all that jazz. Many of this sub have a much more intimate knowledge about these things than I do. This is actually my main point: The whole time during this insanity I have always been astonished that a layman or a child could pierce holes into the pro lockdown arguments. How could people ever fall for this shit? Let's run this through.
Shouldn’t the burden of proof be on the pro-lockdown crowd?
You know, these are really far-reaching measures. Why didn’t we do this during SARS or the swine flu? I didn’t notice anything about the swine flu back in 2009. At least tell me what makes this virus so extraordinary that measures like lockdowns are suddenly necessary and even sacrosant? The burden of proof should be on you.
Human societes are a delicate collection of routines, behaviours and circumstances. If we need measures to contain the virus, shouldn’t we strive to make these measures as little invasive as possible?
Isn’t this a giant mass experiment we’ver never done before in modern history? Isn’t it foreseeable that this will change the world in thousands of ways we cannot even anticipate at the time we implement those lockdowns? Therefore, shouldn't we think through any less invasive alternatives?
This is a respiratory virus. It basically transmits when people breathe. Doesn’t this make containing it at all impossible from the onset? Especially given normal human behavior we can expect?
(I’m surprised that they didn’t come up with „We should people prevent from breathing“, but I think we weren’t far from that.)
Your lockdown models will surely work out fine when it comes to prevention if 99 % of the people comply with it all the time. I remember a big uproar in the German press because of some teenagers having parties in secret, which could have made many measures functionally useless. (Oh dear.) Well, my dear "experts": This is exactly what you can expect. Teenagers meeting in secret? Two co-workers sharing a cigarette during lunch time „when nobody’s going to see us“? People not wearing masks when they relocate and move out the furniture? „It’s just for a few minutes“. Two old friends meeting each other at a walk and talking where they don't have 6 ft distance between each other? And a thousand other instances like these. Society would probably collapse if people would only interact in 100 % accordance with the rules. Either you take into account actual human behavior or you'll be disappointed. No wonder this whole lockdown thing is an invention by the Communist Party of China: That this could ever be expected to succeed is so insane that only communist ideological hardliners with no regard for human nature could actually believe in it.
Basically lockdowns could only work if 99 % goes according to plan. If in any other area of life a person would tell you about his/her grandiose plan where he will achieve his goals if everything goes according to plan, you would immediately tell that person: That’s the worst plan ever – expect things to go wrong.
If you actually want to go through with lockdowns, the best motivation for people to endure them would actually be a very clear and logical end date and no extensions afer that.
Moving the goalposts is the worst thing you can do if you want to keep the people’s motivation at a high level. Two weeks, four weeks, two months, the whole winter, until the vaccine is there, until the high-risk-population has been vaccineted, until we have a high vaccination quota, until a mild variant emerges - you get the point. That depletes populations and you're achieving the opposite, dear lockdown fanatics.
I remember at one point some German bloggers actually wet their pants when they saw Australia’s strategy.
There was this infamous stunt where all of Melbourne had to get back into lockdown and one match of the Australian Open was suddenly interrupted, the visitors sent home. This was hailed by some as "the right strategy we should emulate". Are you completely insane? A few cases in a city and it's lockdown again? How can people expect to have any kind of normal everyday life under such a bizarre regime? That’s psychological torture on a mass scale. I was at loss for words at this point.
We need a test strategy and more testing!
Did anyone actually bring up the fact that going to a test station for every little activity of your life and than waiting in line, taking the test, waiting for the test result to be delivered, showing the test result, is more than just "a small nuisance"? Infact it’s damn annoying at best. It's also enormously time-consuming and absurd. God beware if all of this fuss would be in vain if the test are actually not that accurate...
Lockdowns are so enormous and all-compassing that they create a gigantic sunk-cost-fallcacy for politicians.
The politicians invested so much in this shit and destroyed so many things, it has to amount to something. And since the longer the lockdown, the greater the harm, their only incentive is basically to double down and hope the lockdowns "work". What a perverse incentive structure.
I know I've asked this a while ago, but again: Why the heck can’t we increase hospital capacity? At the end of 2021 this was still the ultimate argument for restrictions in Germany. So let me get this straight: We can do everything else and totally destroy society but we can't increase hospital capacity even if our lives depend on it?
This will go on until a vaccine is available
Are you fucking kidding me? What if the vaccines would have taken five or seven years to develop? What then? Lockdown for years? (In a way, it was tragic that vaccines became available relatively soon, because otherwise we would have faced a situation where the whole insanity may have revealed itself more openly)
Where are classical liberals and leftists in all of this?
Let's remember the 2000's: Liberals were all over state overreach in fighting terrorism, fighting against economic inequality and recognizing mental health problems. So: How could any of these people ever support lockdowns? I will never get over the fact that people who argued against Anti-Terrorism-Acts fifteen years ago let the state run amok much crazier than during the entire War on Terror. All of their former principles thrown out of the window just so these people can engage in an endless cycle of virtue-signalling because „If we admit lockdowns were wrong, right-wingers would have been right" (no pun intended). Twitter is one hell of a drug.
Other respiratory virueses come back with a vengeance?
Don't we create a much greater problem by denying exposure to other viruses? Before Covid: Basically the annual flu season is a problem. The winter after lockdowns: Covid and the flu season and even the common cold are now a problem. Doesn’t the problem with respiratory viruses get even bigger the more we lockdown? Reminds me of an OCD patient who obsessively washes his hands for fear of germs only to weaken his skin and actually be more susceptile for germs.
Don't we need some kind of guideline after this under what circumstances lockdowns should be on the table again?
A question especially for lockdown supporters: Shouldn’t we, you know, precisely determine under what circumstances lockdowns can be repeated? If a virus like this comes up again, wouldn’t it be good if society knows if and when to expect a lockdown? Like at what death rate would lockdowns come into play again? (Hopefully never!) Why is nobody doing this?
Also: Couldn’t we have actually done the best focused protection strategy with only a small part of the whole money we threw out of the window for this? Cost-benefit analysis, anyone?
Why does it always seem like simple observations let the whole lockdown logic crumble? I don’t remember at any time that any of those questions were satisfingly discussed or even answered. Instead one insane talking point after another was pushed through the media. As you see, I didn’t even mention any of the more „scientific“ things (like mutations or fatality rates) in my post. Hence why I think a fifth-grader could bring this whole lockdown logic to fall .
I surely hope some children actually did this and the adults around them actually suspected that the world had gone crazy.
(On a personal note: Thank you my dear politicians for fucking up my life. I was 27 and had just overcome a long depression when you throw me back. Now I'm getting 31 soon without ever actually "living" my twenties and having a shitload of other problems which were excarbated by your decisions.)

2023.03.28 22:41 Fostao19 LVMH Valuation - Luxury Business, Diversification and Valuation?
Hello guys! This time I will value LVMH. Over the past 5 years, they have achieved exceptional returns with a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 29.2%. This smashes the S&P500, which had a yearly return of 10.6% in the last 5 years, by a margin of over
18% annually.
Imgur: The magic of the Internet This total return can be attributed to their dividends and as well as their revenue growth (13.18% CAGR) but especially their earnings growth which was around 21% CAGR, means the company increased profitability in this period and the increasing multiple that the company trades right now at a P/E of 29x and in 2018 was around 25x. The company has been becoming more and more expensive for the past few years in terms of their multiples but this is with a reason, but LVMH has been delivering what they promise and growing their revenues and profitability every single year except for 2020.
Revenue CAGR L5Y | EPS CAGR L5Y | DPS CAGR LY5 |
13.18% | 21.38% | 19.14% |
Company Description
LVMH Moet Hennessy today has more than 75 brands in the luxury business, going from fashion and leather, wines and spirits, perfumes and cosmetics, watches and jewely. The company brands are for example Louis Vuitton, Bulgari, Dior, Fendi, Givenchy, Guerlain, Kenzo, Marc Jacobs, Tiffany & Co, Moët & Chandon, Hennessy, Veuve Clicquot, Krug, Dom Pérignon, Maison Ruinart, Le Bon Marché or Séphora.
Company Sales by business segment: (growth with constant exchange rates the past year):
- Fashion & Leather goods: 49% (20%)
- Selective retailing and other activities: 19% (17%)
- Watches & Jewelry: 13% (12%)
- Perfumes & Cosmetics: 10% (10%)
- Wines & Spirits: 9% (11%)
Company Sales by Geography:
- Asia: 37%
- United States: 27%
- Europe: 24%
- Other Markets: 12%
Valuation (Discounted Cash Flow)
- Revenue growth rate for the next 5 years will be 9% decreasing slowly from the year 6 to 10 to the risk-free rate.
- Operating Margin: The operating margin is forecasted to rise from 26.54% in 2022 to 28.5% in 2027, due to increasing efficiency and pricing power.
- Cost of Capital: The company's cost of capital stands at 7.27%, with 92.81% of it being equity with a cost of 7.63%, and 7.19% being debt with a cost of debt of 2.61%.
- Terminal Growth Rate: The terminal growth rate is anticipated to be the risk-free rate of 2.50%.
- Terminal Cost of Capital: The terminal cost of capital is calculated as the risk-free rate plus 4.5%, equating to 7%.
- Terminal Return on Invested Capital: The terminal return on invested capital is expected to be 13%.
- Value per Share: The value per share is estimated to be €747.
- Market Price Today: The current market price of the company is €817.
Based on the above calculations, it appears that the company is
slightly overvalued. Accounting for the quality of the company this makes sense, as a high-quality company and a consistent one this is just a case of a quality company at a fair price.
BUT: Dior owns
41.1% of LVMH.
1 Dior Share = 1.14 LVMH Share. - Market Price Today Dior: The current market price of the company is €793.
- Value per Share: The value per share of Dior is estimated to be €747*1.14 = €852
So, if we buy Dior, actually
LVMH is slightly undervalued, which may constitute a buying opportunity.
Benjamin Graham Valuation Model
- Earnings per share in period 0: €28.03
- Growth in EPS in the next 7 to 10 years: 9%
- Current Yield on AAA Corporate bonds: 4%
- Value of the stock according to the model: €817.
Risks
Currency: - LVMH does not hedge their currency risk. 80% of their revenues are in foreign currencies while only 20% are in €, but most of their costs are in € which can be a risk. LVMH is able to offset the currency headwinds through price increases for certain brands where demand is strong.
Acquisitions: - While the company’s overall record of mergers and acquisitions is quite successful, remains a risk of overpaying or choosing a target poorly. Acquisitions can also drag the group into less profitable and more competitive businesses.
TLDR
LVMH is
slightly undervalued if we buy the stock DIOR. They are quite diversified in a lot of different industries that limit their exposures and while their products have long product cycles and iconic heritage collections along with brand diversification, control over distribution and controlled supply makes LVMH a great business.
They have a wide moat in a lot of their business (Fashion & Leather, Wines & Spirits, Jewlery & Watches) as represented as recurring buyers represent over half of LVMH's Revenue. At this moment is a great business at a fair price and growing in every single metric. As a note, the voting rights are unevenly distributed to favour the founding family, while they own 47.48% of the company they have 63.46% of the voting rights.

2023.03.28 21:33 rfe2022 My experience with Plan B
So while looking up a bunch of others' experience going through this myself, I didn't find anyone with my exact experience/timing so I thought I'd write it out so that just in case someone needs to know this exact scenario.
So. I am very regular. To the hour. & 5 days long.
My period ended Feb 17th. Had a lot of sex on the weekend. On Monday morning the 20th, had sex again but the condom broke. Definite ejaculation inside. My guy freaked out, but I figured since my period ended 3 days earlier, the odds of anything happening were slim. I wasnt due to ovulate for 5 days after that. However, to ease his nerves I took Plan B (the one step, one pill)
No side effects.
One week later on Feb 28th I got a 'period'. It was 5 days but lighter, though not too much lighter than normally. My period SHOULD have come March 11th. However it did not. So I thought "maybe the pill restarted my cycle". However, if going by that, my period should have started March 26th. Still waiting, it has not come yet.
A little nervous I took a pregnancy test. Negative. By now it should have an accurate reading since it has been over 4 weeks since the sex. But nope. No period. And I haven't even had any cramping or anything. It just...hasnt come. I have had regular clear stretchy discharge (sry tmi) that usually happens during ovulation, so I was thinking eh itll probably come asap. But nope.
Now, I guess I am a LITTLE nervous, but with that negative test I really doubt I'm pregnant. (Cross fingers). Since Im not on birth control, I think the plan b pill really really messed up my cycle.
I also started doing keto on March 13th, so the drastic change in my diet also probably didnt help, and little sleep these last two weeks because of stressful work project.
But even though Im still waiting for lovely mother nature's gift, I wanted to say that if someone has this experience of taking it 3 days after their period ended, don't worry yourself to death.
Of course, I'll update if I don't get my period by the end of April and I take another test and it's positive....but hoping this can help someone not worry too too much.
Take care girls.

2023.03.28 21:22 lIlIlIIlIIIlIIIIIl Help Deciding Between Daiwa Tatula SV TW and Shimano MGL 150
I've been doing some research about modern baitcasting reels in my budget and it's come down to one of the two:
Daiwa Tatula SV TW Casting Reel https://www.tacklewarehouse.com/Daiwa_Tatula_SV_TW_Casting_Reels/descpage-TSVW.html (This is the TW103 2020 edition with Zero-Adjust)
Shimano Curado 150 MGL Casting Reel https://www.tacklewarehouse.com/Shimano_Curado_150_MGL_Casting_Reels/descpage-CRD.html My Notes/Comparison:
- Price is the same
- Shimano has one of it's adjustments inside the reel which means I'd have to pop it open to adjust it (this is my main reason to avoid Shimano)
- Curado MGL 150 looks like it might be smaller?
I have always been a big fan of casting 1/6 and 1/4 oz rooster tails and Kastmasters and whatnot. I know a Baitcaster isn't ideal for that situation, but I'm hoping to use my Baitcaster for some "
light" situations but not much lighter than that.
Which reel would be best for someone looking to do a little bit of everything? I love bass fishing, doing a bit of trolling off the back of a kayak, live bait fishing at night when you just leave the pole and wait for a catfish, etc.
I saw Shimano has the DC option but I think to start I want to adjust everything myself. I am leaning towards Daiwa because it seems more adjustable and is easier to adjust on the water. I might get a Shimano DC when they come out with the Scorpion DC5 version in the US, but until then I'm looking for something good for a beginner Baitcaster in the $200-225 range ($250 is pushing it, unless you can recommend me a cheap rod!)
Would appreciate it if someone could help me pick between the two! Haven't seen a lot of direct comparisons for these two specifically.
I'd be going with a left hand retrieve since I am right hand dominant. But I'd be interested to hear everyone's thoughts on gear ratios too!
I plan on running a 40lb braid with a 20lb fluoro leader, I fish around docks a lot and want to have that extra strength in case I hook "the big one". Let me know if this is flawed thinking. I heard Baitcaster work better with heavy line anyways and I'm not too worried about if the fish will see the fluorocarbon leader
I'm learning that I don't know as much about fishing as I thought so I'm very open to suggestions! A lot has changed in recent years!

2023.03.28 21:10 maps1234567890 Should I report my in-laws to CPS?
My husband visited his estranged sister a couple days ago. Her son (husband's nephew) lives with her with his girlfriend and their 3 year old daughter. When my husband was there, he observed that the home was absolutely filthy and they all smoke cigarettes and weed indoors. Our 3 year old great-niece had black bottoms of her feet and my husband was unsure if that was from not being bathed or from walking around on dirty, nicotine-coated floors or both. They gave her popcorn for dinner. At midnight. Her parents stay in their room all day playing video games and rarely bring the child downstairs apparently. The child is totally non-verbal and they say it's because she's autistic, however she hasn't been diagnosed and they barely talk to her and NEVER read to her. She spends all her time watching tv. 😢
My sister-in-law also was apparently bragging about having a physical altercation with the baby's mother, and the mother left her child with them for a week without calling.
As a mother, my heart would break for any child being treated this way. Since they're kind of my family (we don't talk and my child hasn't met them due to drama they caused years ago), I feel even more obligated to help this poor baby. My husband would be unsupportive of me reporting them. He also is unwilling to confront them about the child's living situation. I really dislike these people for what they put me through and told my husband I would never allow them into my life or home, but I would be willing to deal with them if it meant I could somehow help the child while her parents got their lives together. As in, I think it would be best for her to be placed with us rather than in foster care and I would be totally fine with having her parents and grandparents in my home to see her.
I don't want it to seem like I'm retaliating for them being horrible to me in the past or like I'm trying to take their child away. That isn't the case at all. I just want her to have a good life, parents who read and talk to her, a clean home and healthy food. And I don't know how to speak to her family about this since they don't like me already. I appreciate any advice y'all have. Thanks in advance.

2023.03.28 20:54 feenanay0819 [WTS] TRM Atom / Demko AD20.5 Smooth Ti 3V / Shaman CTS-204P w Flytanium CF Scales / Bugout w Flytanium "Europa" Crossfade Ti Scales
Timestamp:
https://imgur.com/a/y9lRHdu I'm the original and only owner of all of these knives, which have been carried and lightly used (but not abused) by me. All have been sharpened by me with either a TSProf Kadet (TRM Atom and Bugout) that I since sold or a Work Sharp Precision Adjust Elite (Shaman and Demko AD20.5). The Atom and Bugout have more refined edges, as I worked through a whole progression of Venev Orion stones. The Shaman and AD20.5 are a bit 'cruder', but still sharp. All the knives for sale include their original boxes.
TRM Atom - 20CV blade / OEM "Gray Ghost" contoured 3D Tek-Wood scales Photos:
https://imgur.com/a/fqLRdse This is probably the toughest of these four knives to part with. I've had this Atom for some time now and have switched out scales more than a few times. It turned out that the Gray Ghost contoured 3D Tek-Wood scales were the perfect ones for me, with a little kick of laminated color on sides and cut-out, to boot. Nothing much to say about the Atom that hasn't already been said, so I guess I won't.....
**asking $210*\*
Demko AD20.5 - 3V blade / smooth Ti scales Photos:
https://imgur.com/a/WrnNlTL Insanely great action on this one, and of course, lockup is rock solid. As I mentioned earlier, my use of the Work Sharp Precision Adjust Elite sharpener didn't exactly produce an aesthetic marvel on the edge, but it is sharp.
**asking $240*\*
Benchmade Bugout (535-3) - S90V blade / Flytanium "Europa" blue-green Crossfade Ti scales Photos:
https://imgur.com/a/UFzBPZk The aftermarket Flytanium "Europa" Crossfade scales bring the Bugout to a new level, and actually the original Benchmade carbon fiber scales were really good! (Please note that I sold the OEM carbon fiber scales separately).
**asking $300*\*
Spyderco Shaman - CTS-204P blade / Flytanium carbon fiber scales Photos:
https://imgur.com/a/sVwYlRb Another great knife improved by some excellent aftermarket scales. In this case, though, I do have the original forest green G10 scales, which will be included with sale. Also, a note on the blade finish/edge here.....this was the first knife I sharpened on the Work Sharp Precision and the 200 rough grit hadn't quite 'worn in' yet, so there's a few small scratches near the edge bevel, including my mostly successful attempt to create a small sharpening choil.
**asking $250*\*
Asking prices are
PayPal G&S, with shipping by USPS Priority Mail from St Louis. I'll gladly do discounts for bundling two or more knives.
What else? Oh yeah....
since this painful reduction of my already relatively small folding knife collection is all about funding an upcoming hiking trip to Glacier National Park,** I'm not looking for trades.*\*
Thanks for checking this out.

2023.03.28 20:20 Vermouth_29 How much money has Kogoro earned?
If you don't want to read, I estimate that, from chapter 1 to chapter 130 (manga) Kogoro earned 11.470.000¥.
Well, this is a question that has always been on my mind, how much money has Kogoro earned as a detective, he is always involved in cases, so he should be a millionaire, right? Well, as these days I have started the show again from chapter one I decided to find out how much money Kogoro would have earned and today I come here to tell you how much money I estimate he has earned.
Note: All chapter numbers refer to the manga, not the anime.
First the most important thing, we need a time frame to be able to put a little in context the amounts, it is not the same to earn 10.000$ in a month that to earn them in a year, luckily in the chapter 1050 of the manga Mary helps us saying that from the disappearance of Shinichi until their trip to London only 6 months have passed, then we know that from chapter 1 until chapter 743, that is when they go to London, 6 months have passed, we also know that the London case is case number 217, so we can divide by 6 and we have that every month have 36 cases, now, we will only focus in the first month because if not, this post will be too long.
Well, now we have our time frame, so we can start counting the money... But there is an obvious problem, we do not know how much money Kogoro earns for each case (except for Moonlight Sonata Murder Case and Akaoni Village Fire Festival Murder Case), since as a general rule we are not told what amounts he charges for each case, and when we search in Google how much money private detectives earn we find another problem, and that is that they don't charge a fixed price, they charge according to the time it takes them to solve the case, as expected, and it is impossible to determine exactly how much time Kogoro spends on each case, but fortunately I found a detective agency in Tokyo that has published on its website, how much money an investigation can cost depending on the type of case, so I will use those amounts to try to determine how much money Kogoro could earn for each case.
In the first 130 chapters of the manga there are a total of 36 cases, a pretty high amount since it is more than one case per day, but it is not anything crazy because it also includes the cases of the Detective Boys or cases where Kogoro does not appear, so first let's remove all the cases where Kogoro is not involved, and we are left that of 34 cases he is only involved in 23 cases, but that Kogoro is involved does not mean that he will earn money for solving them, because he needs to be hired in order to get paid, so let's remove from those 22 cases, all the cases where he simply encounters a crime and we are left only with the cases where someone directly hires him, and we have that he has been hired only 8 times in the first month, and with this we can already see that he is not a millionaire, but he will still have collected a good amount of money since the services of a private detective are not usually cheap, and now we can finally count money.
- Company President's Daughter Kidnapping Case: Now we start with the first problem, and that is that although private detectives can help in cases of kidnapping, the agency I use as a reference does not have a section where it says what they charge for a kidnapping case, and I have not found much information online about how much they can charge for this type of service, so I will base it on the price of finding someone missing, so I think 200,000¥ would be reasonable amount, especially considering that the first kidnapping was fake.
- An Idol's Locked Room Murder Case: Here the things get complicated again, and is that at first he is hired to find a stalker, but in the end it ends up being a murder, and if that were not enough his client is Yoko Okino, so my intuition tells me that Kogoro at first refused to charge her, but let's say that in the end Yoko pays him for his services, and knowing Kogoro I would not be surprised if he charged her only as a case of harassment and quite cheap, so my estimate in this case is about 70,000¥, which is the cheapest harassment case that the detective agency I have consulted has, although it is very likely that he charged her even less.
- Akaoni Village Fire Festival Murder Case: 500.000¥, mentioned in the episode, no no debate here.
- The Strange Person Hunt Murder Case: Akemi... Akemi... Akemi...I sincerely believe that Kogoro would not charge her anything for this case, because Kogoro will be many things, he will be a drunkard, an irresponsible, a womanizer and whatever you want, but before all that he is a father, and the fact that a high school girl comes crying to his agency begging him to find her father, who is her only family, and who has abandoned her, I do not see him asking her to pay him, 0¥
- Once-A-Month Present Threat Case: This time we have a case of harassment that ends up becoming a kidnapping and attempted murder of a child, another relatively complicated case when determining how much you can charge for it, for me an important point here is that Mr. Ogawa does not want to inform the police so he will be willing to pay more in order keep everything secret, I think that about 200,000¥ is a reasonable price for this case.
- The Antique Collector Murder Case: Although here Kogoro is not hired to solve the murder, remember that the victim had hired him to investigate whether his wife was unfaithful, and although he had not paid him he had formally hired him and he had done his job, so there was a debt, and as the debts are inherited along with the inheritance, the person who inherits his fortune will also have to pay Kogoro, the person who inherits his fortune will also have to pay Kogoro, the only negative point here is that Mr. Maru had asked him to find out who was the person with whom he was unfaithful, so Kogoro could have charged him more money, but only for the investigation of the infidelity I think he can charge 100,000¥.
- Moonlight Sonata Murder Case: 500.000¥, mentioned in the episode, no no debate here.
So if we now add the numbers we gat that Kogoro in the first month would have earned around 11.470.000¥ (~88.000$ or ~81.000€), not bad... That doesn't add up, does it? That has an explanation, and it is that the number has a trick, since it INCLUDES the 10.000.000¥ that Yukiko gives to Kogoro for taking care of Conan, so Kogoro's earnings would be "only" 1.470.000¥ (~11.000$ or ~10.000€) which is still quite a high amount, but we also have to take into account that this would be gross income, not net profits, to this amount we would have to apply taxes, and then expenses, of which I have calculated more or less everything that has been spent on hotels, car rentals and travel, and it would be around 450. 000¥ (~3.500$ or ~3.000€) then we would also have to subtract the bills, the rent/mortgage of both the apartment and the office, daily food expenses, what Kogoro spends on cigarettes and beer... So yes, Kogoro earns quite a lot of money, it is true, the average salary in Japan is 6.180.000¥ per year, so if Kogoro earns 1.450.000¥ in a month he is earning almost 3 times more than the average salary, but he also has a lot of expenses, so we can conclude that, Kogoro is not rich, but he earns enough money to support his lifestyle.
Finally I would like to mention one thing, and that is that all of Kogoro's clients during these chapters were quite wealthy people (except Akemi Miyano, who visited him pretending to be a schoolgirl), we have 2 presidents of companies, 2 doctors, 1 idol, and 1 loaner.... All people who financially have no problems and can afford to pay for the services of a private detective.

THE SINS OF OUR FATHERS - A DDMA WHAT-IF? STORY Chapter 1: Who's...Missing?
November 3rd, 2017…the day of the Culture Festival. An event where the children of Japan can put their motivation and skills into creating incredible artistic achievements. From music, to paintings, physical abilities, and so much more. For many, it’s a chance to show to the world what they’re capable of, or to just take a break from tedious school subjects and have some fun.
However, it’s also a chance for people to entice others into checking out something they have a lot of passion or interest in. And in Salvato City, 8 members of a High School Literature Club have been working hard on their preparations for their event, in order to get some new recruits, and show off just how amazing Literature can be when you look past the surface.
In particular, an 18 year old boy lies down in bed, already wide-awake and eager to get up and prepare for this important day. Though, he ends up waiting under his red bed sheet, which is covered with 3 different types of blankets in order to keep him warm during the Fall season. As he waits, he stares at his phone, laying down on his desk and charger plugged into it. In a way, it was like his red eyes were staring daggers into it, as if he was some kind of animal stalking its prey.
However, due to his impatience, he decides to just get up, groaning a bit as he moves the sheets off and sits up, stretching for a moment. Then, he stands on the floor, with an eager smile on his face.
???: “Okay! Festival time!”
Without another moment to spare, the boy takes his phone and turns off his 6:30 alarm, before taking his school uniform off his computer chair (Which he put there ahead of time) and changing out of his Dragon Ball-themed pajamas, complete with fuzzy Christmas socks. And after getting dressed, the boy takes a moment to inspect himself in the mirror.
Immediately, he takes notice of his long, messy red hair, and tries to comb it back a bit with his hands. Normally, he prefers to have shorter hair, since it’s easier to manage, but he decided to change it up during the Summer Break in order to see what it was like. Admittedly, he found that it wasn’t too bad, but he still preferred it shorter.
As for his uniform, it…wasn’t exactly too proper. When he first started at Salvato High, he did wear the entire thing. The gray jacket, orange vest, white button shirt, etc. However, after a couple of months, he tried to figure out what he could get away with when it came to the dress code. And despite the trouble it gave him at times, he found a way to make the attire less stuffy.
He wore the white-button shirt (Since you obviously couldn’t go around topless in High School), but he rolled the sleeves up, and didn’t bother to button the two buttons around the collar of the shirt, which exposed a bit of his chest area. Plus, he didn’t bother with putting on the red tie either. But he did wear the orange vest. The gray jacket, however? No thanks.
As for the blue jeans, he didn’t make any adjustments to those. But he did have a belt, which was covered by a black jacket with red accents tied around his waist. The boy always wanted to be prepared in case rain ever starts, and to have some extra pockets to store items he felt he needed. And in terms of his feet, he wore some blue-colored socks with a ring pattern on them, alongside a standard pair of black sneakers with red accents.
After making sure he was properly dressed, the boy grabbed his phone, put it in his pocket, and walked out of his room, where he went through the hallway of the house, past the bathroom, a supply closet, his mother’s room, and his older sister’s room, who wasn’t present due to being busy with College in Osaka.
Quickly, he ends up in the living room of the house, where a couch placed in front of the window that showed the front lawn was present, which faced a shelf with a flat-screen TV, different game consoles, a disc player, and more. However, he didn’t pay it any mind as he speed-walked towards the kitchen, where he came across a familiar woman waiting for her coffee to brew from the coffee machine on the counter.
The woman was around her late 40s, but had a somewhat youthful vibe to her thanks to her make-up. It also helped that she had red hair as well, but a lighter shade. And she was dressed up in black dress with red accents, alongside black leggings, and had a pair of glasses covering her white eyes. Once the boy rushes in, preparing himself a bowl of cereal, the woman takes notice and smiles.
???: “Good morning, Itsuki.”
Itsuki: “Morning, Mom.”
Narumi: “Hehe. Already excited for the Festival, huh?”
Itsuki: “Yep! I didn’t even bother to wait for my alarm clock!”
Narumi: “Lucky you. I never had that kind of luck when I was your age.”
Narumi: “In fact, I had to get up around 6:00 AM in order to prepare for the Orchestra Club’s band recitals!”
Narumi: “Good thing Coffee has always had my back!”
As if to confirm that claim, the Coffee Maker on the counter finishes brewing the Coffee in Narumi's MCR cup, leading to her grabbing it and blowing at it in order to cool it down. Meanwhile, Itsuki pours milk into his bowl of cereal, as he continues the conversation.
Itsuki: “Eh. Personally, a bit of milk or water will do the trick for me.”
Narumi: “For a while, sure. But once you start reaching my age, you’re gonna need something STRONG to get you going.”
Itsuki just shrugs his shoulders, not caring too much about his mother’s comment, and then heads to the kitchen table nearby, taking a seat and munching down on his cereal. However, he takes a moment to look at the batch of cupcakes (decorated to look like cats) set in metallic trays on the counter, smiling with anticipation and pride, remembering his contributions to his club’s Culture Festival Event.
Joining him at the table, Narumi sits down next to Itsuki with the coffee in hand, as she stares out at the full-screened doors, showing the backyard of the house. Complete with a tool shed, bench, and a swing-set with two seats. It may not have been as big as the backyard from their previous house, but she still found it intimate and pleasing to the eye.
Narumi: “So? Any big plans for today, other than the Literature Club, the Macbeth play, and your class event?”
Itsuki: “Not particularly. I was just gonna check out the other stalls and what-not during my free time.”
Itsuki: “I’m really eager to eat some Takoyaki!”
Narumi: “Mmm. And you’re sure there’s nothing else of importance?”
Narumi gives a bit of a sly smile when she says this, which makes Itsuki turn his eyes to the cupcakes in the kitchen as he gives an awkward smile. After that response, she realizes she may have touched a bit of a sensitive subject, and tries to figure out what’s bugging him.
Narumi: “Hey…why the long face?”
Itsuki: “You know exactly why. I’ve told you what’s been going on with her lately.”
Narumi: “Sure, but I wasn’t expecting that kind of look, considering the way you think of her.”
Itsuki: “...Guess that’s not inaccurate…”
Itsuki: “But at the same time, you’ve seen first-hand the way Natsuki can be at times.”
Narumi: “Indeed…and I can’t say I don’t get some kind of weird feeling from it, either…”
Ever since Narumi was told of this short, pink-haired girl by her son, she grew a great amount of interest in the subject. Not just because it was something her kid cared about, and she felt it was her duty as his mother to listen. But because this could be the first time Itsuki has ever felt a spark with another person. A first love.
Needless to say, any parent who cares about their child would keep their eyes and ears peeled for any sort of information on a possible partner for them. And as she heard more and more about her, Narumi was both happy…and a bit concerned. Particularly the feisty attitude and how she interacts with other people. Granted, Itsuki’s never really gotten close with anyone that could have been a problem past Middle School, so…maybe it’s just a case of “Don’t judge a book by it’s cover?”
And when she finally got to see Natsuki for the first time, she was relieved to know that was exactly it. However…there was something nagging at her in the back of her brain every time they were in the same room. Specifically, her short and skinny body, and the way she interacted with her. It was almost like…there was something…’off’ about her.
However, Narumi felt it wasn’t her place to do anything about it, as while she definitely was on good terms with Natsuki and they talk a bit when they’re around each other, she wasn’t too close with her and thought that whatever it is that’s beneath the surface, Itsuki could handle it well enough. Assuming he doesn’t lose his temper, which would be unlikely at this point.
But…she knew her son had feelings for this girl. And she could tell Natsuki felt similarly, too. But strangely, the two have never sealed the deal. Despite greatly supporting the two of them to go through with it…nothing ever comes out of it. At least…not on Itsuki’s end. From what he’s told her, Narumi believes that the pink-haired girl might be intentionally avoiding her feelings for some unknown reason.
And if you think Narumi found this annoying, then Itsuki found this infuriating at times. Despite his many attempts to figure out her feelings, or to express his own, Natsuki always tries to weasel her way out of it. In particular, when making cupcakes for the Festival, the two started to throw frosting at each other out of fun, which led to the redhead pinning the pink girl down on the ground.
During this moment…the two looked at each other with this…”longing” in their eyes. However, after a few seconds, Natsuki awkwardly tried to get out of his grasp and wave it off as if it never happened. To Itsuki, it almost feels like she wants nothing to do with him nowadays, even though they still spend plenty of time together, in and out of school.
So…what’s her deal? Why can’t she tell him anything? This question has been bothering the young boy for these past couple of months, and he’s sick of it. But back to the present, Narumi does her best to reassure her son of this troubling relationship.
Narumi: “I…will admit that her being all secretive and crap is irritating.”
Narumi: “However, she must have a good reason for doing so. You don’t just ignore your feelings so easily.”
Itsuki: “Sure…but at this point, I figured we’re on good enough terms that she could just…say whatever to me.”
Itsuki: “And you know better than anyone that I hate it when people hide stuff from me.”
Narumi: “Of course…it’s the same case for me, too.”
Narumi: “But that doesn’t mean she can keep it up forever. Sooner or later, she’ll have to tell the truth.”
Narumi: “So, you must be patient until that happens.”
Itsuki: “Pretty sure I’ve already been patient! I’ve been dealing with this for 5 months!”
Itsuki: “Like, okay, I get it can be intimidating to open your heart to someone, but it wouldn’t hurt to say SOMETHING!”
Itsuki: “At times, I doubt she even likes me all that much!”
Narumi: “If that was the case, then she wouldn’t spend so much time around you.”
Itsuki: “Exactly! Give me a clear answer, oh my god!”
Now irritated, Itsuki goes back to eating his cereal, and manages to finish it. He even drinks all the milk from the bowl, too. And as he puts the bowl and spoon he used into the dish-washer to get it cleaned, Narumi speaks to him from the kitchen table.
Narumi: “Itsuki...I don’t want you to give up on her yet.”
Itsuki: “I didn’t say anything about doing so.”
Narumi: “But I could tell it was crossing your mind. And I suggest you ignore that thought.”
Narumi: “Natsuki may not be fully honest with you, but it’s clear to me she needs someone like you.”
Narumi: “From what I’ve seen of her, she’s had it rough when it comes to company.”
Narumi: “And you’re one of the few people who makes her feel special.”
Itsuki: “...I know.”
Itsuki: “I just wish she could say that to me already.”
Narumi: “She will. Don’t rush things.”
Narumi: “Once she’s ready, I’m certain it’ll all make sense, and we can all laugh about it later.”
Itsuki: “Hm…maybe…”
Finally getting a somewhat genuine smile back, Itsuki walks back to the kitchen table and gives her a short hug, before going to the bathroom to brush his teeth, clean up his hair, etc. But as he does so, he keeps thinking back to his mother’s words. A part of him feels it’s just empty promises, but…he knows she has a point about Natsuki.
Sure…he doesn’t tolerate lying in any way. Especially when it makes him or other people suffer in some manner. But that doesn’t change the fact that Natsuki Gushiken…is an amazing person. Snarky, cute, fun to be around, and overall, a kind soul that just has a hard time expressing it, and feels the need to guard herself from anyone that might hurt her.
From their first encounter on the rooftop during lunch to making cupcakes for the festival, Itsuki has known she was a much different person compared to anyone he’s met before and after. Someone that, even on a crappy day, can make him smile and forget that something’s going wrong for a while. Sure, it may sound corny. But in the Mirai Family? Corniness is a part of the bloodline.

2023.03.28 19:42 bxsiliskx Scariest Moments Of My Life
I made a post a couple days ago voicing out the fact i wanted to share my story. After receiving positive feedback of people simply willing to listen I started working on my story. I’m still not finished, but i wanted to at least get some of it out. It’s been difficult putting the story together not because i can’t remember everything, but because my anxiety starts to be to much and i have to take a break from it. I remember everything like it was yesterday and it was 2 nearly 3 years ago, but nonetheless here’s what i’ll call - Part 1:
᭙ꫝꪮ ᦓ ꪑꪖᧁᧁ꠸ꫀ﹖
It genuinely gives me anxiety recanting the events that took place. As I’m sure if you’re here reading this you are most likely aware of what psychosis is, but in case you don’t, a state of psychosis typically referred to as an ‘episode’ except you aren’t always guaranteed to come out of it. Thankfully, I did.. you truly lose grasp of reality, you don’t know what’s real & what’s not, but the problem is everything that isn’t real you don’t know that it’s not real everything seems real to you. No one can tell you any different. You’d argue until your face was blue that whatever it is you’re seeing is real. I’m sure you’ve heard or seen plenty of stories about murder cases where the suspect claims “the devil told me i had to” “it was the voices” ect, ect… Some of those people, sure might be full of shit. However, some of those people are not… I know that because this is my story. I hope you get something from this. Getting this off my chest and out to people is really for me and my peace of mind, but still maybe it can be for you so let’s begin. October 7th, 2021 I’m not much of an artist, I can’t draw nor paint, but on this day I decided to paint and so I did. I painted through the night into the next morning never seeming to be satisfied with what it was I was painting. It’s around 3-4pm at this point and I’m sitting in front of my canvas just looking at it trying to figure out what it’s missing. I couldn’t seem to figure it out. Maybe because it wasn’t missing anything, but I still tried to figure it out. After some time passed I actually fell asleep for a period of time (Not sure how long, but i assumed it was for 30 minutes - 1 hour) & (The beginning of my psychosis) I was awoken by myself. As I started to wake up I was talking to the painting that I was still sitting in front of. I don’t know what i said exactly or whether i even spoke proper english. I could’ve been mumbling for all I know. This plays a more important roll later on. After i was awake and conscious I stood up thinking “damn, i just fell asleeep sitting there like that” and started to move around to help wake up some more because I did have a dinner to go to with my mother. I got ready, she came by a picked me up, & from there we went out to get dinner somewhere. While we were eating i noticed that i was seeing what looked like speckles of what appeared to be a glitter like when you stand up to fast or hold your breathe and you see those flicking “stars” except this wasn’t that, which i just brushed it off and didn’t think much of it. Afterwards we went back to my house where my grandmother, my aunt, & my little brother stay as well. (My aunt & grandmother are the ones that practically “raised” me as well as my brother). I went down into my room and i decided that i was done with the painting all I needed to do was sign it at the bottom, so that’s what I did.
I wanted to show it to my grandmother so I did and afterwards i noticed a part of my painting that looked like my dog Brydie which at the time i thought was pretty cool so I took the painting back to my grandmother to show her and she herself also saw what I saw. My grandmother then points out something that kinda looked like my other dog Morgan (I have 2 dogs whom go by the names of Brydie & Morgan) and then all the sudden my grandmother & I both are finding multiple things that have value to me hidden within this painting such as my personal spiritual numbers (that being 222 & 417) As i’m finding all these hidden things within this painting that were all very meaningful to me something in my head gave me the idea to see what it looked like upside down so i turned it upside down and that’s when my picture was completely different. The bright orange sky filled with sunset turned into a pool of fire. The flock of birds gliding through the clear skies were now all people burning in a fire. As quickly as i noticed all the cool, calming, & loving things hidden within my painting even quicker it all turned piquant, horrifying, & hateful. I couldn’t seem to take my eyes off this painting and in the center mass of this painting i had painted a “man”, but it was more like a character of sorts. Whenever i would look away from it i could see the facial expression change from what was happy & ecstatic to a more happy & evil like a proud evil villain. I could only see it out of my peripheral vision. It wouldn’t change if i was looking directly at it only as i would go to look away from it. Whenever i was directly looking at it i could only see the original facial expression i had painted. I couldn’t take my attention away from it though because it continued to happen. At this point i was officiated on it and i found myself just staring at it. I actually begin to verbally ask it “Why are you looking at me like that when i look away? I painted you, why are you looking at me so evil? i don’t understand”. This continued for what felt like 10-15 minutes. My brother walks into my room and he finds me there staring at this painting as it was hung up on the wall & he ask me, “Do you want to come out and smoke a cigarette with me?” and I replied, “Yeah, I could definitely use me a cigarette right now” . My brother replies, “You okay? you look like you need one.” which i responded. “Yeah, i’m good this painting just keeps looking at me funny every time I look away from it.” & him thinking i’m just trying to be funny let’s out a chuckle and says “Well, I got the cigarettes so c’mon”. He hands me a cigarette and we start making our way towards the door. (Remember it’s October and we’ve always been the type of people to go “all out” when it comes to halloween. We would make creepy, scary, human sized characters leading up to Halloween so we could put them out in the yard for trick or treaters & we even would keep several of them in the house for our own Halloween spirits) - Read Comments Below:

2023.03.28 19:28 rentadonkey Cigarette packaging laws have gone way too far. Box art should be allowed. The enforcement of extremely graphic medical picture warnings is obnoxious, annoying and unfair
here's what UK law says on cigarette packaging:
"All cigarette packs for retail must be in standardised packaging. Packs must be a cuboid shape and a non-shiny drab dark brown. Brand names are allowed but must be in a set position, font and maximum size. Required health warnings and other permitted features must be presented in a standardised way. There are also internal packaging requirements. All other trademarks, logos, colour schemes and promotional images are prohibited."
I was a full-time smoker for 9 years, transitioned to NRT and eventually quit tobacco altogether (well, mostly). I still enjoy a smoke on special occasions. I buy maybe 3 or 4 packets of cigarettes a year.
I think it's unfair that the end-user is coerced into carrying disgusting graphic images on behalf of the government. personal property should not be forcibly "uglified" for the public good. the graphic medical imagery should instead be displayed on the premises where the products are sold, or on the website where the products are sold. the annoyance of ugly anti-smoking imagery should be placed on the businesses selling the products, not the end-user. it's the hostility towards the end-user that bothers me most of all.
it's not illegal for an individual to purchase aftermarket replica cigarette boxes featuring brand logos, artwork and colourful fonts: so what's the point? to inconvenience the end-user? cigarettes lose their freshness as soon as you break the foil seal, so it's not ideal to transfer the cigarettes from their ugly packaging into a nice, pretty cigarette case. worst of all? it makes it almost impossible for the end-user to tell when they have been sold a box of counterfeit cigarettes. it was much easier to identify counterfeits 20 years ago, when cigarettes had lots of box art and colour. you could always tell when something was slightly off with the logo or colour-scheme. again, it all feels like unnecessary hostility towards the end-user.

- UMich (won't go over UT or UNC)
Additional Information: as noted above, forgot a big lab position i secured in my update, kinda tossing. forgot my recs for gtown, but wouldn't go to gtown over UT, same logic for mich, case western, ucla + uc berkeley + usc, and probably emory/washu tbh cuz UT gave me honors. my grades are kinda weak, think its whats hurting me the most, my ecs are like decent and idk about essays so I'm pretty sure I don't get into any more schools, but I always wanted UT Austin (good school, in-state, cheap, pre-med) over nearly all of my list, so a lot of them I don't really care about that much lol. only real big ones I care about left are Duke/Brown. I lowkey am happy about JHU reject because in hindsight, 80k too much money. even now I don't know if I'd go any private over in-state at UT
