I'm a 25yo girl, and I have to make a decision about my future job. I recently have obtained an MSc in Biology in Italy, and I'm doing applications for a PhD in northern EU (Denmark, Netherlands). I already did a couple of interviews but they rejected me, but I am still happy since they were really difficult to get into and the interviewers told me I was a very valid candidate anyway, so I think that I could get one in the future if I keep trying.
Anyways, I love research. I love bringing new things into this world and I'd love working into the environmental field. I'd also like to go abroad and see how things are, since I am dissatisfied of the Italian mentality of doing things for their own gain (as I experienced during my thesis) and also the lack of instrumentation for experiments. But I know that Academia in general is hella toxic, so I would be taking chances anyway.
Last week my mother told me that some local food company was looking into hiring biologists and asked me if I would like to do an interview. I looked into it and did it (just to experience a non-online interview, and you never know it), and I passed. They want to hire me It looked to me for an indefinite time, and the salary looks also very appealing for a neograduate (something around 1600 net for a start) with opportunities to grow. I would be still living at home, so I would be making a good sum of money for something I studied for anyway. So, a one-time opportunity.
Meanwhile, I am working on publishing my thesis, working on a conference and studying for the Exam of State (an exam you do to abilitate biologists to do certain works) to be done between July-September. If I manage to get into a PhD, I would have to start in August, so there's no "summer hiring only" option.
I'm torn out. What should I do? Give in to stability and a good position (and something that, who knows, I might like, and I feel comfortable at home) and stop looking for PhDs, or bet my future to get into Academia and live abroad for less without compromises?
