2023.03.29 09:37 Waelder TCF Patch 3.0.0 - 29th March 2023
| Read the patchnotes on the game's website: https://thecycle.game/news-and-media/the-cycle-frontier-patch-3-0-0 Greetings, Prospectors! Community Team here! We know that you folks have been waiting to dive into the full patch notes for Season 3 for quite a while now, especially with all that we've been teasing the past couple of months. Well, that wait is finally over, as the new season for The Cycle: Frontier begins today, along with a bunch of new features and changes. Before we jump in, we'd like to take a moment to thank the people who played during Season 2. 182 days is admittedly a pretty long season, but we're super grateful for all of your support, positive messages and, most importantly, your constructive feedback. While this patch will include a large variety of updates and adjustments, this is only the first of many patches that we hope to put out throughout this new season. Let's dive into these notes, we've got a lot to unpack here! NO MORE WIPES You heard it here first, the final wipe is here! Players will start Season 3 completely fresh and on an even playing field. Kiss your Brute stash goodbye and put Season 2 behind you, because Season 3 will be taking you back to the start of the campaign where your prospecting journey began - except you now have all the knowledge of a seasoned, hardened Prospector to carry you. This, however, will be the last of these so-called mandatory wipes we have planned. Our game has been completely overhauled for a permanent progression system, and we will (after this wipe) no longer be forcing you to reset your progress within the game. You will of course keep any Aurum and earned cosmetics associated with your account. Welcome Packs that were previously purchased will also be regranted to you upon logging in for the first time after this last wipe. As a result of this new era, we've updated our in-game texts and descriptions to reflect this change. We could talk about what happened to the Storm Divers, why all of those flyers have mysteriously disappeared, or why the storm has suddenly gone back to normal. But the work of a Prospector is never done and that's a conversation for when you're older. Now get out there, veteran greenhorn, and earn your K-Marks! FREE LOADOUT RUNS Free Loadout Runs are coming! If you've found yourself low on K-Marks or maybe you're just starting out and learning the ways of Prospecting, consider grabbing a Free Loadout Run provided by the various factions. On the Deploy menu screens, players will now be met with an option to select your Prospector's Loadout of gear equipped from your stash or select a free randomized loadout put together by one of the factions. If a player has no gear equipped from their own stash, the free loadout option will be selected by default. If you have a loadout already selected from your stash, your prospector loadout will be selected by default. Note that if you choose to take the free gear, any previously equipped gear will be transferred to your stash, assuming there is room for everything. There is a cooldown on how often you can use a free loadout since it takes some time for the factions to put together what they're willing to give you. A timer will be visible on the loadout selection screen to let you know how long you'll have to wait before another loadout becomes up for grabs. Once selected, these loadouts will function the same as the normal loadouts you're used to. Take the gear down to Fortuna III and, if you survive, it's yours to keep. If you don't make it back without needing to be defoamed, that gear belongs to whomever is able to bring it back to the station. Each faction should provide Prospectors with at least a weapon, armor, backpack, ammo, and health consumables with a chance for extra goodies to be thrown in by way of a 2nd weapon, weapon attachments, additional consumables, crafting mats, keycards, or helmets. Those greedy factions won't be too eager to give away anything too useful however, so these loadouts will more often than not contain white gear with much smaller chances of getting green or blue items for free. These loadouts may not turn your trips to Fortuna III into a walk in the park, but they should give you an extra boost if you're down bad or don't want to risk losing your hard-earned gear while learning the basics. https://preview.redd.it/g1iwjcwwqmqa1.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d4274c94e84d818cb038615970c1aee70f293207 LOADOUT PRESETS This is a long requested feature and we are happy to finally give players a way to equip everything they need for their planet-side ventures with one click. You can customize your preset loadouts with your favorite or most-used gear in the stash section of your inventory. When selecting a preset loadout to equip, any weapons, armor, helmets, ammo or other consumable items will be equipped directly from your stash. Any items that are not your stash will be purchased from the appropriate faction HQ automatically, with a popup asking you to confirm said purchase. New descriptions and UI sections have been added to properly teach you how to assemble and equip a preset loadout. When viewing a preset loadout before equipping, icons will display which items are currently available from a player's inventory, which items need to be purchased, and which items are unavailable. Use this feature to quickly get back into the action between runs and spend less time running between the faction shops to pickup the gear you need to achieve prospecting glory. https://preview.redd.it/ybt52y75rmqa1.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=fed829edc624482b2742704a40724d3dda51e2bb A NEW THREAT: THE HOWLER The Howler is a flying insect-like monster that has emerged on the surface. This large and in-charge addition to the game aims to generate new drama and new player stories by overlapping with other events and happenings in the game. As part of our direction to create a game that is as suspenseful as it is fun, we hope that the Howler will add a new layer to the game in a variety of ways. The Howler is our first roaming creature, traveling through the skies from place to place. When it's idle, you can try to sneak past it or remain motionless, in the hopes that it won't hear you. However, once it's ready for fisticuffs, you'll experience a new type of PvE challenge that we'd like to say is somewhere between the Marauder and the Crusher in terms of difficulty. But we wouldn't quite call it a boss encounter either. One thing we know for sure, is that you won't have a hard time finding it, as you should see and hear it coming with relative ease. In addition to the Howler, a new in-match activity has made its way to you: the Howler Nests. These nests contain Howler eggs that react to sound by simply exploding and expelling a toxic fume into the air that you'll want to steer clear from. However, if you're quiet and patient, there might just be something worth bragging about inside some of those eggs, assuming you can get your hands in there and survive to tell the tale. We hope that this new organic and reactive element will offer new ways to traverse areas of all three maps that were once free of... whatever those things are made of. To top it off, both the Howler and Howler eggs will drop unique items that can be used to complete new quest missions, upgrade your player quarters, and craft new items. As a result, you'll be able to create your own Howler Grenades, new throwing weapons aiming to recreate the Howler's signature move: its disorienting shriek. They affect both Prospectors and wild creatures, and we can't wait to see how you put them to use. Sure, we could have just introduced basic flashbangs into the game, but where's the fun in that eh? The Howler will also come with it's own brand new questline that you will be able to complete with Osiris, are you sure you'll know how to use that? Consider rallying other Prospectors on the surface if you're trying to take down a Howler in the early stages of the game. If you can put your hunger for gear aside, you and your new teammates might be able to take it down before anyone else. Although considering the usual human greed, we can't promise everyone will remain friendly after the Howler loot has dropped. https://preview.redd.it/v6ub8dj9rmqa1.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3311d8ed9df1c9c8bd4847c5b766d70af1575bd0 THE WAR ON CHEATING As with every update, Season 3 comes with plenty of backend improvements to our anti-cheat detections and preventions, some big and some small, to help make cheating even more difficult than it already is. For the sake of security we can't go into exact details here, but these changes include better methods of automatically detecting cheats, better tracking tools for our support team to investigate suspicious players, and more obfuscation measures to make the actual development of cheats more difficult. We have also worked closely with our friends at BattlEye to make sure that the game is in top-top shape for the release of the new season. Since we know Season 3 will also have many players returning to the game, we will give a quick recap on some of the major improvements we've made to our anti-cheat systems since Season 1: - Shielded Matchmaking: Helps give our Trusted players an added layer of security, and makes the creation of alt-accounts much more difficult for cheaters.
- Cheating Victim Compensation: Automatically compensates players who fell victim to a cheater once that cheater is banned.
- Data Obfuscation: Makes the creation and development of cheats more difficult and time consuming.
- A Dedicated Anti-Cheat Team: Closely monitors and quickly reacts to any new threats the game might face.
- Third Party Tools: We have worked closely with anti-cheat specialists like BattlEye to add additional layers of security to the game.
- Revamped in-game reports: Makes the process of sending reports much smoother, and gives our team more data to investigate cheaters.
- And many more backend improvements to our anti-cheat systems...
If you'd like a more detailed look at how we're actively fighting cheaters in The Cycle: Frontier, please take a look at our blog post we made for The War on Cheats: https://thecycle.game/news-and-media/season-3-the-war-on-cheats And finally here is a quick message from Toast, the Anti-Cheat Community Manager for The Cycle: Frontier: Anti-cheat is a constant back and forth battle, one that we are committed to continue fighting in our game. Even though our anti-cheat is in a better state now than it's ever been, we aren't done yet. We are already hard at work on more improvements to the anti-cheat that we will be releasing in 3.1, 3.2, and beyond. The team has already made great strides in fighting cheaters since Season 1, and I truly believe that Season 3 will be the best state the game has ever been in. I am super excited for you all to experience a much more fair and competitive version of the game, and I can't wait to see you all on Fortuna III. Until next time, Prospectors. -Toast A NEW HOME: PROSPECT STATION UPDATES Construction crews have been hard at work lately, giving our refuge floating above Fortuna III a facelift. On your next visit to Prospect Station, you will notice all the familiar hotspots have a brand new, if shadier, look. It's pretty likely that a hub for adventurous Prospectors more focused on surviving than sanitation won't be the cleanest place, but that doesn't mean we can't have some nice things. Take a stroll around the new storefronts and investigate all the new activity that will help give more life to the place we all call home. You will find new NPCs roaming about the station along with plenty of neat additions. Try not to get too distracted though, your main job is still Prospecting and surviving. https://preview.redd.it/d7mmknqqrmqa1.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0075c9297d74bcae07d0b4ba79bb956d556b8172 https://preview.redd.it/xegs8krjrmqa1.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f1479931783ff9ee3f1c4b62eec03fbfd13ef746 ECONOMY TUNING FOR NON-WIPING GAME Removing mandatory wipes means we'll operate on an economy focused on the long term. Making adjustments to how the economy used to function was imperative. As a result, finding and obtaining exotic and legendary items will be much harder than before and early game can be adjusted to feel far less punishing to new players who are just finding their bearings on Fortuna III. We've overhauled many early game quests to feel less overwhelming (but still challenging), in addition to making late-game accomplishments feel much more rewarding. Players will have a chance, albeit a very small one, to find gear with a tier above the area they're in. Leave no stone unturned on the surface, as opening a weapon crate to find a Voltaic Brute, or checking a jacket to find a rare keycard should now feel like a true jackpot moment and get your heart pumping as you make your way to the evac ship. We do not want late-game players to have infinite access to the best gear in the game. Sure, unlocking something great should be a big milestone, but upkeeping high-level loadouts should be difficult, and bringing a full end-game loadout into a match should be a truly special occasion - this is what makes the infinite gear chase more thrilling. This required us to re-think how easily players can re-purchase gear that they have unlocked, and how often, as well as how deep our money sinks are running. We've added additional ammo variants for different weapons that will increase in cost as you progress to higher tiers of weapons, which means you will have to be much more conscious of the risk versus reward of constantly running that Voltaic Brute if your goal is just to kill creatures at Greens Prospect. The new challenge for end-game players will be to maintain the ability to run the highest level gear when it makes the most sense to do so. Purchasing weapons from the factions will now also cost faction scrips in addition to their usual K-Mark costs, so completing jobs and quests for each faction will be more important than ever. The loot pool of items that can be found has been updated to encourage players to be more diligent when searching for goodies at various POIs to have that jackpot moment when finding a rare item. NEW WEAPONS/AMMO: MKI & MKII VARIANTS The arsenal of weapons available at your disposal will be expanded to accomplish a few different goals. First and foremost, the new versions of the weapons will help cover some of the gaps we previously had in the weapon lineup with LMGs, launchers, SMGs, snipers, and shotguns. This means you will find more rarities of different weapon types to offer more choices of what you can use on your journeys to Fortuna III. This change also gives players an opportunity to use their favorite weapon skins more frequently on more weapons that sometimes became obsolete as you progressed to higher levels. https://preview.redd.it/uyxzhzyurmqa1.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5ed46b6ba06c7ac4da9b7e835ea74c4db7f06552 You will see two different variants of some guns in the form of MkI and MkII weapons. MkI weapons will be lower tier versions of current versions, while MkII weapons will be higher tier versions of their original counterparts. There will be some differences between MkI/MkII and their current versions in the form of damage or penetration values, types of attachments you can use on each weapon, and types of ammo that will be needed for different tiers. This will also allow us to make the higher tier guns rarer without diluting the weapon pool too heavily, and still give players the 'jackpot' moment if/when you find a rarer gun from a weapon crate. BALANCING IMPROVEMENTS Along with the aforementioned economy tuning, some balance changes needed to be made to accommodate the non-wiping systems. The biggest change you might notice is how quickly armor durability will decrease when attacked by other players and/or creatures during fights. This will make prospectors think twice about engaging potential enemies while affecting decisions about what armor is worth the risk for their goals for each match. Don't forget to repair your armor between matches if you want to stay fully protected during runs. We've also tuned some weapons following the addition of the new MkI and MkII weapons, but there will be more details on that in a later section of the patch notes. Meanwhile, Prospectors will now have more choices for their methods of destruction (or protection) while exploring Fortuna III. Starting capacity of each prospector's safe pocket has been increased from 5 to 9 to help with progression through some earlier questlines and player quarter upgrades have been adjusted to account for those changes. Creature behavior and health have received some tuning to make them a bit less of a pain to deal with in some cases. Standard variants of Striders and Rattlers had their total health reduced and shouldn't be as spongy to damage as previous iterations. The range at which creatures are able to see and hear prospectors has been adjusted slightly along with the amount of time it takes to de-aggro from a target. Be more aware of your surroundings as stealth and sneakiness will be much more important than it previously was if you want to stay undetected. We have also made some other smaller balance changes as well. Mid-air accuracy has been reduced for most weapons to help make the combat feel a bit more grounded, many key crafting components have had their crafting timers reduced, and there have been changes across the board to loot drops and rewards to help facilitate the new economy. It's more changes than we can realistically list here, so we encourage you to drop down to Fortuna III and discover them all for yourself. MATCHMAKING UPDATES Matchmaking is a topic that is often discussed in Discord, Reddit, and Steam forums. More importantly, it's one that we are not oblivious to. During Season 2, we switched things up from using average evac value to using K/D ratio as the main factor for determining the MMR rating used to place players in different buckets. We found that while this was certainly a step in the right direction towards making matches fairer, there is still room for improvement to avoid brand new players who have a good run from being unfairly matched with more veteran players getting blasted by gear far beyond what they have access to. While matches in TC:F are meant to be somewhat uncertain, we definitely understand how frustrating it can be to constantly die due to an total imbalance of weaponry before you have a chance to react. To combat this, but still maintain some sense of tension and uncertainty about what you might encounter during any given drop to Fortuna III, we will be implementing a form of gear score in combination with K/D when determining a player's MMR calculations. This doesn't mean that you will only see players wearing the same gear as you in a match, as that limits the ability to have score big 'come ups', but it will help keep players more fairly matched and make it less likely that new players will be constantly overpowered while they are learning the ropes. Another big topic of feedback we received regarding matchmaking is how difficult it is to regularly survive when outnumbered during encounters with other players on Fortuna III. With Season 3, you will now find the separation of buckets based on squad size that was originally implemented for Bright Sands during Season 2, now spread across all three maps. This means that no matter what your skill set or what map you choose you should only see other solos as a solo, duos as a duo, or trios as a trio in trusted matchmaking buckets. EARLY GAME EXPERIENCE UPDATES We've made another pass on early missions in order to give new players a better overview of what to expect and the basics of life as a Prospector. This includes more detailed explanations of certain tasks and additional tips for features that should become useful when staying alive after gaining the trust of the factions and becoming a full blown prospector. https://preview.redd.it/84zw6zgzrmqa1.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b7bc5d02724694402b103abb0bcdb7eb3ae312cc Returning players will no longer be required to complete the tutorial missions once they've been completed once. They will only appear when launching the game for the first time on a new account - During the first drop and tutorial, Prospectors will now hear gunshot sounds to get them accustomed to more of the sounds they should expect to hear during their time on Fortuna III
- Popups and voiceover lines for early tasks should better inform users of what their goals should be
- The flow of the early game has been finetuned to make the process run more smoothly as players progress through each task
- Early game matchmaking has been significantly tuned to better ease new players into the game
LOCKED KEYCARD ROOM IMPROVEMENTS Keycard rooms have been reworked across the board to give much juicier loot, but to compensate, keycards are now much rarer and have less uses. Now they will truly be "loot rooms", instead of "a few white stims and an AR-55" rooms. Keycard rooms should also feel more "themed," containing items that are more relative to the location of the rooms. We're very excited to see what you discover! https://preview.redd.it/amyhfbxbsmqa1.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2275523505ffc9b534886b510fe66047698cf158 SEASON 3 FORTUNA PASS https://preview.redd.it/pxsyxnglsmqa1.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d2a3bfd5b8eaa2baff508c20eb1a577765005ebe New Season, new Fortuna Pass! We've got 100 new tiers to grind through, complete with Prospector Archetypes, Banners, Weapon Skins, Sprays, Aurum, Resource Crates, and more! Fortuna pass is chock full of vanity like the last season. We still wanted to give you as many weapon skins as possible in addition to: - 2 main characters with 1 extra variation each
- Harvester and his twin BloodFreak - they never get along well
- Bloodhound and Rebel Reporter - both willing to take any risk to bring you the latest news!
- 2 new emotes for color Fortuna even more
- Three new Melee Weapons
- 14 weapon skins
- Various sprays, charms, banners, and a drop pod
But that's not all! - Crates have been revised, we added some of the MK2 weapons and new ammo for you to test it out
- XP rewards and bonuses were slightly tweaked
- XP curve is now non-linear and later levels of the pass need a bit more XP than in season 2, but first 15 levels of the pass are not affected at all with this change
NEW PROSPECTOR ARCHETYPES All prospectors will have a new customizable default base suit, chest piece, gloves, and boots that can be equipped from the character customization screen. Different from the previous seasons; you can now purchase/acquire single outfit pieces like base suits, chests, boots, and gloves. We will still have some of the outfit bundles available next to these new single (ready to mingle) pieces. This season, we tried to be a little wilder to explore some different effects for almost all the cosmetic types. You'll see some see-through bellies running around with Unbound Synth, wicked melee, charms and weapons that look like they are taken right out of a Howler's gastric - or rather fun and progressive charms, melee weapons etc. We still would like to expand and improve on this! (you know what? if you press U - you can inspect those kick ass weapons, charms, and melee in match. All of our items have their rarity assigned! Get ready for some epic and exotics! - Unbound Synth: A prospector which is perfect for you! Our first less human, more android prospector with a few emotions (maybe none at all) and the strongest dedication
- The Artillery: She will be joining the team very soon - after dealing with her internal reckoning
- The Jungle Bandit: A sneaky one that thinks adding a couple of bushes makes him look visible - but in reality it just looks dashing! He'll be with us later in the season - still collecting some bushes to perfect it's outfit
- Authority Operative: Without any communication with HQ, and without pay, even the Authority's commandos need to earn a living. Where better to put their skills to use than the planet's hellish surface?

- Sometimes the Crusher Caverns can have issues spawning mobs (or spawn too many mobs), if you encounter this issue please reach out to a community manager with your prospect.log files
- There are some cases where a player can get stuck on a Badum FTUE task. A simple restart of the game should resolve that but our team is working on a more permanent fix
- Some of the emotes are not previewed correctly in various screens like Fortuna Pass, Special Offers etc. You can still fully see all the amazing moves and our little Leafling, Marauder etc in the station and in match but we will look into how to best preview them
- Some of the new items with additional effects are missing an indicator on the icons to imply so. Once you go to the preview or see them in game - you'll be amazed (and we'll be fixing that little marker issue)
That's all for now, prospectors! Thank you all for your support and feedback over the previous 2 seasons, we hope that Season 3 will be fun, exciting, tense, and we cannot wait to see the stories you and your fellow Prospectors create when you drop back down to the surface. It's me!
These are my notes for my video on Blood Meridian. Will also upload reviews of Chapters 11 and 23 specifically, as requested by a few people. Enjoy!
blood meridian notes This lecture is founded specifically on the work of Dr. Michael Lynn Crews, assistant professor at Regent University in Virginia. In a 2014 paper he plumbed the Wittliff Collection at Alkek Library in San Marcos, Texas, where McCarthy has provided all of his notes, drafts, and correspondences. He essentially made a list of influences and explored evidential links. We’ll be looking at some of the most prominent today, but the link to the study itself is in the description if you would like to look into it more. All of the authors are very pertinent to McCarthy’s work, and he is an insanely well-read person, but I chose these three in particular because they are, as far as I can see, most relevant to the narrative itself. We will be looking at Oswald Spengler, Herman Melville, and Lord Byron - but there is no reason to stop at these. I strongly encourage you to look through all of Dr. Crews’ study in order to get a bigger picture of the work.
Now, this discussion will primarily be designed to help early understanding of the book. Byron and Melville constitute kind of a spinal role in this book while Spengler has thematic presence in the book’s events. Other authors feature just as heavily and centrally, but the three I’ve chosen bear the signature of the book pretty well: will to power, the concept of nature, the human heart. The will to power is obviously a hegelian and Nietzschean concept, which we will touch on, but we will do it by looking at Spengler, who was directly influenced by the predecessor. This will be about a one-hour video just to be square - so that it’s long enough to listen to but not too long to turn off too early.
Introduce McCarthy and Blood Meridian
Today, we’re actually going to start with Byron. This is the easiest road into Blood Meridian in particular for a very specific reason. Crews notes a 1981 letter in which McCarthy MENTIONS Byron - “which is not surprising.” Lord Byron is one of the most famous writers in the English language and McCarthy frequents classic literary avenues. Crews quotes McCarthy as writing:
“I don’t know if I agree about writers being the only dependable readers. I remember reading once the names of the writers Byron admired – none of whom anyone has heard of since.”
We will be returning to this quote again. For now, we know that McCarthy knows who Byron is. Crews notes the similarities between Byron’s anti-hero and many of McCarthy’s protagonists - not least of which is the protag of Blood Meridian, The Kid. But as we move through the first paragraph of the book, the poet’s influence on McCarthy will become very clear.
Byron traveled a lot and made an incredible impression on culture in his day. His poetry is authoritative, full-bodied and existential. Among his most famous works is Stanzas to the Po. Byron was in Italy at the time, near the end of his life: he was in love with a married woman named Teresa Gamba Ghiselli. His infatuation was so intense that it would follow him to his grave. Ghiselli was brilliant, sociable, and in many ways a celebrity in Venice. When she became gravely ill in 1819 Byron was ready to end his own life. They eloped in 1821 and grew bored, then Byron left for Greece, where he would die a few years later. Stanzas to the Po was composed in 1819, when he confronted the river Po itself as a kind of counsel, and felt affirmed in his romantic ambitions. This is the 11th verse:
A stranger loves the Lady of the land;
Born far beyond the mountains, but his blood
Is all meridian, as if never fanned
By the black wind that chills the polar flood.
Byron was a man controlled by his extraordinary vision of the world, controlled by passion and a slave to beauty in every sense. It is this obsession with what is beautiful that will feature centrally in Blood Meridian - but the beauty itself will be a fact of the will, and perhaps not a remark about the world itself.
- Valery, on the Ya Lu
- “For you, intelligence is not one thing among many. Every day it devours everything. It would like to put an end to a new state of society every morning. A man intoxicated on it believes his own thoughts are legal decisions or facts themselves born of the crowd and time. He confuses his quick changes of heart with the imperceptible variation of real forms and enduring beings.
- “This is the law by which the intelligence despises law, and you encourage its violence! You are in love with Intelligence, until it frightens you. For your ideas are terrifying and your hearts are faint. Your acts of pity and cruelty are absurd, committed with no calm, as if they were Irresistible. Finally, you fear blood more and more. Blood and time.”
- The Chinese man in Valery’s short story seems to be suggesting that Western ideals improperly conflate our whims with law itself. To him, war and blood are mere facts of life, a matter of business. But somehow he harangues the visitor, a European, for his fear of blood and his obsession with revolution, a kind of improper mode of thinking. Of course, Valery himself was a European, and so the story is really a Westerner haranguing the West as weak-willed, incapable of discerning things that are old hat to other more ancient civilizations. This would invite the reader to reconsider their squeamishness and be on the alert for entities that might lead us astray by taking hold of our naivete.
- Jacob Boehme, 1575-1624, Lutheran theologian and mystic
- Boehme was influential among the enlightenment-era philosophers like Goethe and Hegel, helping to inspire movements like German idealism and romanticism
- Boehme was sometimes seen as heretical in his lifetime, and his genius was not recognized until the very end of his life. He was actually what we’d call “working class” but still had command of theological rhetoric.
- Interestingly, Boehme believed that Adam & Eve’s expulsion from paradise was necessary in the formation of the world. This was not a popular view at the time, but it illustrates his singular voice, and it’s an element to understanding Blood Meridian.
- Six Theosophic Points
Discusses the nature of darkness and evil. He quotes Christ as saying, in John 8:44, “The devil is a liar and murderer from the beginning.” He describes “all forms” as being adverse to one another, each of them a figure of deception. He says darkness is “terrified” of light, even though the light seems to exist within each dark form. A dark form is a shapeshifter, can take on many forms. Point 11 reads:
“The dark life is like a terror, where the flash and terror is always mounting upwards, as if it would quit the life and fly out above it. And hence arises pride, so that the devil is always wishing to be above God; it is his proprium, his life’s figure is so, and he cannot do otherwise. Just as a poison rages and pierces, as if it would break loose from the member;”
Then, the translation I found had slightly more breadth than McCarthy’s edition:
“And yet it is not to be thought that the life of darkness therefore sinks down into misery, that it would forget itself as if it were sorrowful. there is no sorrowing; but what with us on earth is sorrowing according to this property, is in the darkness power and joy according to the property of the darkness. For sorrowfulness is a thing that is swallowed up in death. But death and dying is the life of the darkness, just as anguish is the life of the poison. The greater the anguish becomes in the poison, the stronger becomes the poison-life, as is to be seen in the external poison.”
proprium:
ˈprōprēəm. plural propria. -ēə :
property, attribute.
Actually refers to the Bodo cranium, which is a fossil from an extinct hominin. It was found in 1976 and is actually 600,000 years old, not 300,000. Further reinforces McCarthy’s point, that this kind of “evil” or lust for violence predates civilization by a dizzying margin.

Comment on Wordsworth poem:
- wordsworth my heart leaps up:
My heart leaps up when I behold
A rainbow in the sky:
So was it when my life began;
So is it now I am a man;
So be it when I shall grow old,
Or let me die!
The Child is father of the Man;
And I could wish my days to be
Bound each to each by natural piety.
- “blacks in the field”
- People marginalized and conquered by the machinery of history. Early reference to Spengler.
- He is shot after leading a brief stint as a pugilist, and when he recovers McCarthy includes this narrative monologue:
- “Only now is the child finally divested of all that he has been. His origins are become remote as is his destiny and not again in all the world’s turning will there be terrains so wild and barbarous to try whether the stuff of creation may be shaped to man’s will or whether his own heart is not another kind of clay.”
- The Kid is disconnected both from his origins and from his destiny. Both are currently indeterminate. He continues to harbor a lust for “mindless violence.” What we see here is a free or otherwise unvexed soul. He could do anything at this point, but he maintains the will to determine his own fate.
- [The Judge will be a kind of antagonist in this way: he wants to control others and enlist them in his war against creation. The Kid will be freed from physical slavery by the Judge, but will be forced to conform to his habit as a scalper and murderer and deceiver. The Kid will resist determination and slavery by digressing from the Judge’s precepts. It is clear from the event soon after this section that the Judge has powers of manipulation. The Kid will only follow the scalpers because they freed him from literal bondage; his heart cannot be molded like other people’s; he will act in his own interests alone, which infuriates the Judge.]
- But to continue along:
- “The passengers are a diffident lot. They cage their eyes and no man asks another what it is that brings him here. He sleeps on the deck, a pilgrim among others. He watches the dim shore rise and fall. Gray seabirds gawking. Flights of the pelicans coastwise above the gray swells.”
- Frequent allusion to animal-like imagery. The Kid seems intent on distinguishing himself from others, and when he’s a pugilist he is happy to distance himself from others. He will refuse to be defined or restrained by others, and is liberated in his destruction of unfamiliar things.
- The animal imagery shows how the natural world is set in very rigid motions and patterns. Animals are like machines, devices that respond to and operate within nature. People who are slave to reason or patterns of thought are “dumb animals,” as will be later described by the Kid. Death and violence are both a liberation from this enslaved, sundered moral existence and an affirmation of the killer. Those who do not embrace violence, who remain ambivalent, are prey to those who believe. We will also see that religion is a poor refuge from this matter.
- Ultimately, the Kid is able to serve as the narrative keyhole AND as the protagonist because he seems to be one of the only people left with powers of observation. So many characters in this book, or even the animals, seem so set in their ways and blind to the world that you rarely feel bad when they die. One of the true horrors in this book is the loss of consciousness, even if the world is almost too horrifying to continue looking at. What we fear more than anything else is weakness, which would betray the truth, that we are struggling to master the waves, so to speak. That “strength” of spirit will actually be replaced by brutality, which is a mark of weakness. Only the Kid seems to realize that his peers are actually weak, rather than strong in this sense. And only a few people even seem to have a preserved will. The Will is possibly the largest set piece in this book.
- We come to Nacogdoches, where the Kid joins a revival tent hosted by a preacher who has apparently been at it for “two weeks,” so long before the protag arrives. Reverend Green is warning that Christ will walk beside you no matter what, so he asks if the crowd would allow Christ to follow them down into “hellhole yonder,” or into temptation and sin.
- At that moment the Kid is approached by someone described as a “teamster” who suddenly enters the tent and asks him, “You ever see such a place for rain?”
- The Kid says that he only just got there, and the man says “Well it beats all I ever seen.”
- We are entering into a scene of sorrow. Something tragic is about to happen, but we will judge people’s behavior in this situation.
- Another man enters who is towering and bald, and he will later be revealed as The Judge, a central character in the novel. The Judge walks to the front of the congregation and announces confidently that the Reverend is a fraud and has been charged with having “congress” with an eleven-year-old girl and a goat. The crowd is incensed and descends upon the reverend as people swear on his life and gunshots erupt. The Kid and the teamster escape before the whole tent collapses and they meet at the bar, where the bald man buys everyone a drink, described as the judge for the first time. The Judge admits that he completely made all of it up and had never even heard of the Reverend before he arrived. Everyone laughs, despite the fact that he had just suborned murder.
- The fact that everyone hesitates before they laugh is absolutely crucial to this novel. They wait a moment to reflect on what had just happened. Remember that it is pouring rain, almost like an enjoinder to sorrow, and the crowd murdered the reverend, and those who rose to the occasion of violence are absolutely guilty. But they just laugh. They find the whole thing funny, probably because they do not want to take responsibility for themselves. They don’t want to admit to the sorrow just perpetrated. They would rather focus on the judge, almost as a sanctuary from their own culpability. Those who follow the Judge’s words, who commit atrocity, think vicariously through the Judge and become enslaved by him. By forcing culpability into their hearts, they rescind their individuality and become automatons to his will. The secret sauce in this process is intelligence and the spoken word, which is weaponized to seize men’s souls.
- The Judge has already matched Boehme’s description of “the darkness.” Darkness is a state hostile to light, in which nothing “sorrowful” is actually such, but is a kind of rapture. This scene occurred while it was raining heavily, as if to emphasize everyone’s indifference to the sorrowfulness of the event.
- The kid is there for “sixteen days” drinking his money away. He gets in a fight and is seemingly saved by Toadvine, who brings him along to brutally murder a man in a hotel, which leads to them razing the structure. As the kid is leaving town on a mule he sees men standing around the burning saloon with “empty buckets,” as if nothing can stop such an inferno, and the judge regards him as he leaves town, smiling at the Kid.
- What we have witnessed in the first chapter of Blood Meridian is a complete sacrifice of our moral precepts in exchange for our enjoinder to exact reckoning. The Judge’s falsehood lampooned the congregation’s credulousness and sense of moral obligation. The destruction of the Reverend was, in fact, a total affirmation of the Will, callous to truth or moral uprightness or mediation. In a world governed purely by unleashed will, things tend to burn down.

Judge: “our mother the earth . . . was round like an egg and contained all good things within her” (McCarthy 130).
FAUST:
A figure in German folklore championed by Goethe’s representation. Faust was a learned person who sold his soul to the devil at a crossroads in exchange for all knowledge. Something being “Faustian” means that one exchanges their moral or ethical stature for material or intellectual gain. The devil was represented by Mephistopheles, who appears as a black dog.
WILL TO POWER:
Schopenhauer first coined the idea of “will to live” to describe biological motivations. Interestingly, Schopenhauer held that the Will itself is the most important, even more than our sense of safety or our. very concept of existence, because the Will somehow exists without acknowledgement of either.
From his “Psychological Observations”:
“The will to live, which forms the inmost core of every living being, exhibits itself most conspicuously in the higher order of animals, that is, the cleverer ones; and so in them the nature of the will may be seen and examined most clearly. For in the lower orders its activity is not so evident; it has a lower degree of objectivation; whereas, in the class which stands above the higher order of animals, that is, in men, reason enters in; and with reason comes discretion, and with discretion, the capacity of dissimulation, which throws a veil over the operations of the will. And in mankind, consequently, the will appears without its mask only in the affections and the passions.
“And this is the reason why passion, when it speaks, always wins credence, no matter what the passion may be; and rightly so. For the same reason the passions are the main theme of poets and the stalking horse of actors. The conspicuousness of the will in the lower order of animals explains the delight we take in dogs, apes, cats, etc.; it is the entirely naive way in which they express themselves that gives us so much pleasure.
“The sight of any free animal going about its business undisturbed, seeking its food, or looking after its young, or mixing in the company of its kind, all the time being exactly what it ought to be and can be,—what a strange pleasure it gives us! Even if it is only a bird, I can watch it for a long time with delight; or a water rat or a hedgehog; or better still, a weasel, a deer, or a stag. The main reason why we take so much pleasure in looking at animals is that we like to see our own nature in such a simplified form. There is only one mendacious being in the world, and that is man. Every other is true and sincere, and makes no attempt to conceal what it is, expressing its feelings just as they are.”
Nietzsche, looking back on philosophers from the first half of the 19th century, took this idea and formed it into “Machtgelüst,” or “desire for power.”
From “Human, All too Human”:
“Herder.—Herder fails to be all that he made people think he was and himself wished to think he was. He was no great thinker or discoverer, no newly fertile soil with the unexhausted strength of a virgin forest. But he possessed in the highest degree the power of scenting the future, he saw and picked the first-fruits of the seasons earlier than all others, and they then believed that he had made them grow. Between darkness and light, youth and age, his mind was like a hunter on the watch, looking everywhere for transitions, depressions, convulsions, the outward and visible signs of internal growth. The unrest of spring drove him to and fro, but he was himself not the spring.”
- Nietzsche furthers discussion in The Gay Science, under item 13:
- “On the doctrine of the feeling of power. - Benefiting and hurting others are ways of exercising one's power over them - that is all one wants in such cases! We hurt those to whom we need to make our power perceptible, for pain is a much more sensitive means to that end than pleasure: pain always asks for the cause, while pleasure is inclined to stop with itself and not look back. We benefit and show benevolence toward those who already depend on us in some way (that is, who are used to thinking of us as their causes); we want to increase their power because we thus increase our own, or we want to show them the advantage of being in our power - that way, they will be more satisfied with their situation and more hostile towards and willing to fight against the enemies of our power.”
- He concludes by saying, “Compassion is the most agreeable feeling for those who have little pride and no prospect of great conquests; for them, easy prey - and that is what those who suffer are - is something enchanting. Compassion is praised as the virtue of prostitutes.”
- But the concept of Will to Power came into fuller form in Thus Spoke Zarathrustra, a book about a hermit (Zarathrustra) sequestered for a century who comes out to learn that God has died. He travels to a nearby town and finds people witnessing a spectacle, telling them that in the absence of God they must allow for an “overman” or “übermensch” to claim this position. They scorn him for his views. He states that people must be willing to die in order to allow this übermensch to succeed. Eventually, there’s an accident, and a man on a tight rope falls to his death. Only the hermit has any concern for the dead, hiding his body in the woods and vowing to never mix with the crowds again.
- Later, the hermit has a vision in which he conceives of the Wille zur Macht, or will to power. It is an elusive concept, but he illustrates it through examples:
- “The ignorant, to be sure, the people—they are like a river on which a boat floateth along: and in the boat sit the estimates of value, solemn and disguised.”
- The river reminds me directly of Byron, who is essentially addressing the Po as a stage for his passions.
- In TSZ, rather than trying to fit the “Will” into a mechanistic scheme of biological motivations, he simply asserts that the will to power transcends all other motivations, even the will to survive. It is even permissible for the weak to support the strong in their place:
- “That to the stronger the weaker shall serve—thereto persuadeth he his will who would be master over a still weaker one. That delight alone he is unwilling to forego.
- “And as the lesser surrendereth himself to the greater that he may have delight and power over the least of all, so doth even the greatest surrender himself, and staketh—life, for the sake of power.”
- It even transcends the concept of good and evil, and here we see an idea later paraphrased by the Judge:
- “Verily, I say unto you: good and evil which would be everlasting—it doth not exist! Of its own accord must it ever surpass itself anew.
- With your values and formulae of good and evil, ye exercise power, ye valuing ones: and that is your secret love, and the sparkling, trembling, and overflowing of your souls.
- But a stronger power groweth out of your values, and a new surpassing: by it breaketh egg and egg-shell.
- And he who hath to be a creator in good and evil—verily, he hath first to be a destroyer, and break values in pieces.”
Oswald Spengler, 1880-1936, was a German philosopher and scholar. He wrote “The Decline of the West” in 1922, which was hugely popular. He would not live to see the cataclysmic Second World War, and despite initially voting for Hitler he soon turned around and was ostracized for his opposition to the status quo. Spengler opposed antisemitism. He is still known for his general criticism of liberalism among Islamist circles.
In Decline of the West, Spengler casts a society as a cultural organism that can live and die in intervals, and asserts that the Western project is coming to an end. Rather than taking an overtly pessimistic view, however, he aquires Goethe’s concept of becoming and changing. The German word in the title, Untergang, is often translated as “Decline,” but “untergang” did not have necessarily doom-like resonance with Spengler. He nearly used the word “vollendung,” which is more like “fulfillment.” This probably concerns the Judge’s ideas directly — the idea that the sunset or twilight of mankind is somehow also the completion of his project. But “completion” is a complicated reality and not necessarily straightforward; the completion could be a realization of the warfaring creature or a concession to our nature in a more abstract sense. I don’t think there’s a straightforward solution to this obscure detail: I believe the book simply illustrates the triumph of the will over all other conventions, with violence merely serving as a means to an end for the Judge.
Spengler discusses Goethe and Nietzsche almost back to back in Decline of the West. He describes classical civilization as a situation of breaks from destiny: the advancements from classical to new, like Athens to Paris, Aristotle to Kant, Alexander to Napoleon. Rather than purchasing the idea that his contemporary West “inherited” and continued classical tradition, he actually believes the connection is aesthetic and superficial. He suggests that it is more productive to identify how “alien” the classical world truly is to us moderns: as if we share anything with them.
But Spengler actually frames Nietzsche as being lost in his idealization of the classical world, an accuses him of speaking to a “philological mirror.” And rather than buying into the “ancient-medieval-modern” theory of history, Spengler believes history occurs more organically as a sequence in which successive iterations do not necessarily resemble past examples, exactly like a transforming organism.
So when we see the word “Evening” or “Sunset” or “Twilight” of the West in this sense, what we are actually observing, at the moment it is uttered, is the product of this historical sequence. In the context of Blood Meridian, The Evening Redness in the West, we are observing a new iteration of history derived not from an original point but from what has developed in the interim.
This gives new meaning to characters being “remote from their origins,” and it casts light on the Kid’s abandonment of the “poets whose names are now lost” in a house where his birth sacrificed his own mother. Moving West, the human race must become something new, but maybe we are not willing to admit what it is we must become.
The Judge’s destruction of artifacts may also serve to drive a wedge between the truth of history and our fallacious inclination to depict history as one long, linear narrative. The “thread” of history, according to Spengler, is frayed and tangential. Ossification of worldviews may act against our interests — Spengler distinguishes between cultural and zoological determinisms in history. While the “West,” which is a cultural construct, may come to an end, this is trivial in the grand scheme of things. In light of Spengler’s book “Man and Technics,” however, which does have quite a pessimistic outlook, he warns that whereas “culture” was previously our focus, soon its moment’s slow expiration will give way to the often-overlooked technical world, which can effortlessly replace our sacred concerns with the absolutely mundane. But what he truly fears is the sacrifice of the soul in exchange for a purely technical life:
“ For, in reality, technics is immemorially old, and moreover it is not
something historically specific, but something immensely general. It
extends far beyond mankind, back into the life of the animals, indeed of all animals. It is distinctive of the animal, in contrast to the plantwise, type of living that it is capable of moving freely in space and possesses some measure, great or small, of self-will and independence of Nature as a whole, and that, in possessing these, it is obliged to maintain itself against Nature and to give its own being some sort of a significance, some sort of a content, and some sort of a superiority. If, then, we would attach a significance to technics, we must start from the soul, and that alone. ”
With regard to Decline of the West, Spengler is consistent in distinguishing the cultural arc of history from the purely biological, asserting that technique is a hallmark of all life. He then issues some startingly Judge-like remarks:
“Technics is the tactics of living; it is the inner form of which the procedure of conflict — the conflict that is identical with Life itself — is the outward expression. This is the second error that has to be avoided. Technics is not to be understood in terms of the implement. What matters is not how one fashions things, but what one does with them; not the weapon, but the battle. Modern warfare, in which the decisive element is tactics — that is, the technique of running the war, the techniques of inventing, producing, and handling the weapons being only items in the process as a whole — points to a general truth.”
Spengler’s approach to technique is almost frighteningly sober, identifying that our underlying nature is not beholden to ephemeral conceptions, but extends far beyond the narrow horizon of our conceits. As we consider “The Evening Redness in the West,” it is helpful to identify that we are coming into a twilight of an era and into a more faithful inheritance of our nature, one that preceded our short-lived projects and will long outlive it.
Spengler, in Decline, notes the marginalization of great cities, people, and cultures throughout history — how Florence, Rome, Athens hardly command the renown they once did, and that this is typical in history.
“…that many famous old-noble families, descendants of the men who defeated the Celts and the Samnites, lost their ancestral homes through standing apart from the wild rush of speculation and were reduced to renting wretched apartments; that, while along the Appian Way there arose the splendid and still wonderful tombs of the financial magnates, the corpses of the people were thrown along with animal carcases and town refuse into a monstrous common grave — till in Augustus’s time it was banked over for the avoidance of pestilence and so became the site of Maecenas’s renowned park…”
The decline of the “West” is little more than a natural progression of time to Spengler, and it may be that some refuse to be cast out of the limelight of history.
To summarize and conclude:
- The Judge as a faustian figure no longer wishes to exist as a piece of the environment. He would not like to remain in his earthly nature.
- Dr. Crews calls McCarthy’s view of history “pessimistic,” which I have already disagreed with. But he expounds on Spengler’s theory of the Faustian exchange, describing how Europe has sold its soul in order to unlock boundless intelligence and capability.
- Crews notes a quote from the Judge:
- “our mother the earth . . . was round like an egg and contained all good things within her”
- He wishes to crack into the earth, break into forms in order to harvest and acquire the power within them. The earth as an egg is something precious, that we instinctually wish to preserve; he would like to break it open and take that which lies within. This is in reference to the harvesting of phosphorous for gunpowder.
- Crews quotes Milton, Satan instructing minions to harvest the materials of the earth for warfare on 189
- Crews 193-4, discussion of Tobin’s story about the Jobian old man, “Grace comes in the absence of will” from Spengler.
- 194, Suttree passage that describes the Spenglerian need for an opponent, description of the Kid being “swallowed up” by the Judge.
- The book Blood Meridian essentially discusses how to preserve the “I” through all of nature’s horrors. Renunciation of the will is a destruction of this I, which is preserved through an accession to power. How do you maintain yourself when the heart is beset by such a hell as the real world? Melville
- Michael Crews, Melville on 166
- Melville was an American author who worked on ships for a large part of his life and tried to create a career as a writer. Although his work was rarely acknowledged or even noticed in his lifetime, posthumously he would go down as one of the greatest writers in the English language. Never give up, folks.
- His magnum opus is Moby Dick, the story of a whaling vessel whose captain is determined to capture a legendary “white” sperm whale that had once lamed him. Of course it ends in tragedy, but the plot itself is almost entirely irrelevant. Every “chapter” is actually like a prosaic tone poem, featuring paralyzng turns of phrase and flourishes that strike at the heart of our existential and moral concerns. Some of the most innocuous subjects create some of the most piercing and unforgettable passages. Combined with Milton’s Paradise Lost, the scope and intensity of Melville’s prose almost certainly had a direct influence on McCarthy’s own work, which embodies King James rhetoric, epic meditation and jaw-dropping visuals. Possibly the first high-definition book?
- There are multiple passages in Blood Meridian that draw almost directly from Moby Dick, as Crews points out. Crews’ key is the term “federated along one keel,” a famous term Melville used to describe how the sailors, despite hailing from a multitude of backgrounds, are now in the same boat, literally. McCarthy writes in Blood Meridian: “Each man scanned the terrain and the movements of the least of creatures were logged into their collective cognizance until they were federated with invisible wires of vigilance and advanced upon that landscape with a single resonance.”
- McC also betrays the current state of the will within these men — they are all strung along together like a chain gang almost, seeing the world with one eye. In the same way, Captain Ahab’s men are stuck on the boat with him and they slowly realize that Ahab is out of his mind and probably on a suicide mission. The Judge has a similar fatalism, but it seems to be a fatalism he will invariably survive.
- Crews’ associations between the authors is not very long, but I think he is avoiding the infinitely larger question of the union of meaning, which is simply too large in scope for a study showing literary infulences.
- Moby Dick is a long, elaborate, Homeric and very enigmatic work. No one seems to have a clear idea about what Melville is actually saying, and it has been construed as a huge number of things. Obviously, he is commenting on a Christian worldview and makes plenty of transparent comments on existence directly, but there is clearly a world beyond the words themselves. Also, feel free to send your own interpretations of Moby Dick and I’ll read them out on the next video; I will not pretend to have any authority on Moby Dick, which really does deserve a wide interpretation.
- In Moby Dick, the narrator invites the reader, “Call me Ishmael.” This injunction to “call” him Ishmael may already cast suspicion on the reality of the author’s words. Is that his name, or only in the story? Ishmael was a bastard of Abraham who was disowned, and Ahab was the name of a mad king of Israel who worshiped idols. Captain Ahab seems to have a huge idol — the whale — which (and this is no spoiler) leads to the destruction of the crew. Ishmael is saved at the very end by a ship called Rachel. Rachel was known for her care and love for her son Joseph, who was also trafficked by his jealous brothers. In its most general reading, Moby Dick describes a tragic jaunt into idolatrous infatuation with the passions and the furthest extent of human ingenuity. But this all seems to be a pointless extension that causes incredible tragedy. Chapter for chapter, Moby Dick is far too elaborate to hold to one standard. But Ishmael’s “exile” on the ship is a theme for rich moral and existential discourse, which you can find in every punctual and head-slappingly vibrant chapter.
- More than anything else, the essential connection between Moby Dick and Blood Meridian is the human spirit in the face of nature. This is even too broad to mean anything. The nature in Blood Meridian is novel in itself: McCarthy may be describing a nature of which we were previously unaware. Both books give insight into the futility of human inventions and genius against nature; the Judge, for all his brilliance, is still just a creature of impulse. Intelligence has technical value in Blood Meridian — serving only, it seems, to increase the agony inflicted by those who lord it over the weak, a direct and sobering insight into the “Will to Power” that invokes great pause on the subject. Even without a towering intellect like the Judge, the Kid can clearly see through everything happening and can effortlessly denote the futility of contemplation in the face of the truth. In the final chapter, the Kid (now the Man)’s responses are clear and right, but he seems to be digging his own grave in front of the Judge.
- “Even a dumb animal can dance”
- More valuable in Blood Meridian, it seems, is the resistance to illusions. All men seem taken by something: by ideology, by conquest, by money. The Judge reaps all of these but none are his object; he is a machine, it seems, that will run itself forever, a creature of pure intelligence that does not check itself and would cast all of reality into bondage for its benefit. The Judge, in my opinion, simply represents human ingenuity itself, which is not something to be proud of. It is separate from our better judgment, which we find in the Kid. “Remote from his origins,” the Kid can approach the real world soberly — that is, he sees that there is nothing there. His rejection of his father’s “poets whose names are now lost” closes the world’s semantics from him, as though saving him from the tragic tyranny of the mind.
- Ishmael’s description of the Pequod’s journey has full regard for meaning in the natural world, almost as a perfect contrast to the Kid. The Kid’s narrative seems to acknowledge and comprehend the nightmarish and vivid world while casually moving past it, either as a betrayal of foolishness or simple sobriety. Ishmael, however, notes the world’s messages as they pertain to Ahab’s journey — the captain seems immune or deaf to them, to his detriment. If anything, Moby Dick outlines the importance of listening to the world; to ignore it is folly. The Judge, who stands directly opposed to everything, comprehends and notes everything while also destroying it, replacing it with his own metrics, while the Kid passively enters into nature and allows it to guide him. The Kid acknowledges the moral and spiritual travails while the Judge steps over it all on a quest for unlimited power, closing his heart to the pure tragedy of it all. It would seem that by casting the cultural imperative aside, we are able to effortlessly seize on the object of our designs. The “Will to Power” is only inhibited by the human spirit. Therefore I think the “nature” in Blood Meridian is actually our own nature, which is antagonistic to the staggering and terrifying genius we command. Beneath the imperium of invention nothing will be spared.
- I do not believe McCarthy has imbued Blood Meridian with any specific union among these distinguishing features — like a proper author, he describes and expounds on the real world without forcing opinions and uses a controlled flow of information to explore the questions themselves, rather than narrowing the whole book down to a handful of possible conclusions. Blood Meridian can withstand criticisms that it is incoherent because it is too detailed to fail; the discussion of intelligence, morality and our position in the cosmos is so thorough as to far exceed whatever you pay for the paper itself. This is what it shares most intensely with Moby Dick: both are books of exponentially more value than the sum of their parts, probing adjacent topics with fluency and mastery over the discussion itself.

2023.03.16 13:31 PoorMetonym Whose account about the destruction of the Serapeum of Alexandria in 391 is the most reliable? What considerations should be taken into account?
I've been going down something of a rabbit hole in the last day or so about this particular event, prompted by similar events in Late Antiquity, and trying to get unfiltered information on this is dizzying to say the least.
The basics, as I understand it, seem to be this - the bishop of Alexandria, Theophilus, had been given permission by the Emperor to convert some pagan temples (or just one? sources seem to vary), and during the renovation, had some individuals parade a phalli around in mockery, incensing pagan crowds to attack and kill many of these individuals. But honestly, then, sources seem to vary about what happened.
The two main disputing ones (just from my basic reading) are Sozomen and Socrates Scholasticus. Both Christian writers, they don't seem to entirely agree on certain details. Some of them are relatively minor, as to which god the phalli represented (Sozomen says Dionysus, Sorcates says Priapus), but the order of events gets more confusing from there - Socrates gives the background by saying:
"And to begin with, he caused the Mithreum to be cleaned out, and exhibited to public view the tokens of its bloody mysteries Then he destroyed the Serapeum, and the bloody rights of the Mithreum he publicly caricatured; the Serapeum also he showed full of extravagant superstitions, and he had the phalli of Priapus carried through the midst of the forum." (Historia Ecclesiastica, chapter 16.)
So, the implication here is that the Serapeum had already been destroyed before the riots broke out, but Sozomen's account is that the rioters sought refuge in the Serapeum and it was only destroyed afterwards: "They killed many of the Christians, wounded others, and seized the Serapion, a temple which was conspicuous for beauty and vastness and which was seated on an eminence." (Chapter 7 of his own Historia Ecclesiastica, which seems to me to be a different text of the same name.)
I've noticed a discrepancy in spelling - maybe I've got this completely wrong and they were talking about different buildings, but I'm guessing that this is just an alternative romanized spelling of a Greek word?
Anyway, another point is that Sozomen talks about how the pagans who fled to the Serapeum/Serapion took Christians hostage and tortured them whilst they were there, something completely absent from Sorcates', who talks about how the pagans responsible for the deaths (including two grammarians he knew personally) then realized the authorities would catch up with them and fled to various places. There's yet another account, from the Greek sophist Eunapius, who tries to make the case that the Christian mob who destroyed various temples were entirely unprovoked and that they appropriated the remains of criminals and slaves in the Serapeum, declaring them martyrs. I'm not particularly minded to believe this account, as it seems to smack of bias, but I'm willing to say the same thing about Sozomen's, given he describes exquisite torture absent in Socrates' account, and whilst Socrates acknowledges deaths and injuries on both sides of the mob violence, Sozomen only mentions Christian causalities.
But the fact is, I don't know - I'm not trained in historiography or history, and I can't pretend I'd be entirely unbiased when examining these stories either. So, with the long preamble out of the way, my main questions are: 1) Was the Serapeum destroyed before or after the riots?
2) Is there any evidence for Christians being taken hostage and tortured besides Sozomen's account, and if so, why doesn't Socrates mention it?
3) Are there any other sources that I haven't mentioned that might shed more light on this particular historical event, and its wider context?
Thanks in advance.

One Great Story,
New York’s reading recommendation newsletter.

Youngmi’s childhood was a difficult one. The 25-year-old nurse was born to a poor family in Daegu, South Korea, known for being one of the most conservative cities in the country. Youngmi’s mom left the home when Youngmi was young to escape her husband’s physical
abuse, leaving her and her sister behind with him and their paternal grandmother. When she was 5, her 8-year-old sister started losing her hair from
stress.
As she grew older, Youngmi found herself
depressed, unsure of what her future held, and financially unstable. In Korea’s patriarchal society — in which women are generally expected to defer to their fathers and to adhere to rigid
beauty standards — she felt like a perpetual victim, obsessed by the wrongs done to her by her father and pressured into maintaining her appearance in order to please men. Despite her meager budget as a nursing student, she purchased new clothes each season, spending a lot of money on cheap, poor-quality clothes from H&M. She wore makeup religiously. “I could not go outside without any makeup. I felt ashamed of my face,” she said. “I had this pressure of wanting to look beautiful and wanting to be desirable, physically or sexually.”
While scrolling through Twitter in 2018, Youngmi came across footage of protests taking place in the streets of Seoul. In South Korea, where cases of femicide, revenge porn, and dating violence are widespread, a surge in spy-cam sex crimes,
overwhelmingly committed by men, had mostly resulted in fines and suspended jail sentences, if they were prosecuted at all. That was not the case, however, for one 25-year-old woman who had taken a
nonconsensual photo of a nude male model at art school and posted it online; she was sentenced to ten months in prison and court-ordered sexual-violence counseling. The demonstrations were a reaction to the blatant hypocrisy.
Youngmi was moved by the solidarity she saw, but there was one thing she found perplexing: Many of the women at the protests shaved their heads on-camera. As she began to follow more feminist Twitter accounts, Youngmi understood this was a public act of rejection of those same aesthetic expectations imposed on Korean women that have made the country a leader in grooming products and plastic surgery. She began to realize that “you know, men do not do that — men do not feel the pressure to buy clothes every season or wear makeup.”
Soon, Youngmi shaved her head, too, and stopped wearing makeup, joining the so-called “escape the corset” movement happening among young women in South Korea. The movement, which first
gained popularity in 2018, saw Korean women publicly turn away from societally imposed beauty standards by cutting their hair short and going barefaced. (Youngmi was not alone — in 2019, a
survey found that 24 percent of women in their 20s reported cutting back their spending on beauty products in the previous year, with many saying they no longer felt they needed to put in the effort.) This eventually led Youngmi to “4B,” a smaller but growing movement among Korean women. 4B is shorthand for four Korean words that all start with
bi-, or “no”: The first no,
bihon, is the refusal of heterosexual marriage.
Bichulsan is the refusal of childbirth,
biyeonae is saying no to dating, and
bisekseu is the rejection of heterosexual sexual relationships. It is both an ideological stance and a lifestyle, and many women I spoke to extend their boycott to nearly all the men in their lives, including distancing themselves from male friends.
Through open chat groups on KakaoTalk, Youngmi connected with other feminists in Daegu, where she lived with her mother while attending nursing school, soon meeting each other offline. (“It’s so easy to recognize each other with short hair,” she said.) She stopped seeing her friends from high school and middle school whose conversations still revolved around makeup, clothes, and boys. When we met last November at a café in Seoul, where she’s been living for the last two years, she was barefaced and dressed comfortably in loose jeans and a white fleece jacket. Her hair was long enough to be pulled back in a ponytail, as she’d grown tired of people asking about her short hair at her nursing job, but it was tucked into a white baseball cap. Feminism, she said, had helped her recognize that it was patriarchy that was the problem, not her — that “the bad things that happened in your life are not your fault,” she said.
For Youngmi and many others who subscribe to its basic premises, 4B, or “practicing
bihon,” is the only path by which a Korean woman today can live autonomously. In their view, Korean men are essentially beyond redemption, and Korean culture, on the whole, is hopelessly patriarchal — often downright misogynistic. A 2016 survey by the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family found the incidence of intimate-partner violence
at 41.5 percent, significantly higher than the global average of 30 percent. While 4B’s adherents may hope to change
society — through demonstrations and online activism, and by modeling an alternative lifestyle to other women — they are not trying to change the
men whom they view as their oppressors. It is too soon to tell whether this movement can survive and thrive over the long haul. But its ideas and actions have already affected the country’s online discourse, its politics, and most of all, individual women’s lives.
“Practicing
bihon means you’re eliminating the risks that come from heterosexual marriage or dating,” Yeowon, a 26-year-old office worker, told me on a café terrace in the seaside southern city of Busan. We talked over coffee and pastries, along with Yeowon’s girlfriend and another of their friends, all of them wearing wide black pants and black sweaters and sporting cropped short haircuts. Those risks Yeowon alluded to might seem familiar — trading career for child-rearing and housework, as well as the threat of physical violence — but in Korea, Yeowon said, marriage presents an existential threat.
There was a time when Minji, a 4B adherent in Daegu, had wanted to get married, “because, you know, everyone wants to get married.” Knowing what she knows now, however — like that domestic violence, as she puts it, is so common — “I don’t want to get married anymore.” Minji, 27, is probably heterosexual, she said, and has liked a few guys in the past, but they wanted her to “treat them like a king.” So she has no problem boycotting the men of her generation, who are little better than her selfish and abusive father.
Even young women who are not members of the movement echo that they could not imagine dating or marrying a Korean man. Sooyeon, a teacher in her early 30s, told me that talking to her male friends “made me always feel like, ‘Oh, maybe I can never find a Korean man’ … Even in my generation, some guys expect a really traditional role from their spouse.” As if to prove her point, a recent
survey by a matchmaking company found that women were reluctant to marry because of the division of housework, while men hesitated because of “feminism.”
It is unclear how widespread or popular the 4B movement is given its fluid online and offline nature and its evolution over the years, beginning sometime around 2015 or 2016 when a simple “no-marriage” lifestyle grew to include a boycott of men and reproductive labor more broadly. One article estimated
50,000 adherents; others have put the movement’s numbers at under 5,000. Its origin story is similarly complex, though its contours can be traced.
Following years of financial crises in which young people faced growing housing costs and intense competition for university spots and jobs, the way women and men related to each other openly soured. Beginning in 2013, the rate of college enrollment among Korean women
surpassed those of men; today, nearly three-fourths of women are enrolled in higher education, compared with less than two-thirds of men. Previously, women were expected to drop out of the labor force after marriage or parenthood. Now, young men see their female peers as competitors for increasingly scarce jobs. (Several academics I spoke with noted to me that Korea is largely ethnically and racially homogenous, making gender the default and central societal fault line.) In online forums and on social media, disgruntled men began labeling college-educated women
kimchinyeo, or “
kimchee women,” giving a name to “the stereotype of Korean women as selfish, vain, and obsessed with themselves while exploiting their partners,” wrote feminist scholar Euisol Jeong in her doctoral thesis on “troll feminism.”
Around 2014 and 2015, a virulently misogynistic and anti-feminist community called “Ilbe” grew in size and prominence. In its interpretation, women were demanding additional rights and privileges when they already benefited from avoiding the country’s compulsory military service. To the Ilbe community, the entire female populace is gold-digging and shallow. Female Korean internet users responded by latching onto misogynistic strategies like trolling, mockery, and abusive language. Members of Megalia, one of the more prominent feminist sites in this period, coined the term
hannamchung, or “Korean male-bug,” which stereotyped Korean men as “ugly, sexist, and obsessed with buying sex,” wrote Jeong.
In 2016, a young man
murdered a young woman in a Seoul public bathroom, telling police after that he killed her because women had always ignored him. Despite the perpetrator’s own statement, police refused to label the murder a hate crime. Furious, women flocked to online feminist message boards, communities, and chat forums. This wave of digital feminism attracted women from all backgrounds, including working-class women like Minji and Youngmi, making it different from traditional Korean feminism, which was largely confined to universities, NGOs that often received government support, and other elite spaces.
In December of that year, as Korea’s fertility rate
hovered at 1.2 births per woman (it has since slid to
0.78, the lowest in the world), the Korean government launched an online “National Birth Map” that showed the number of women of reproductive age in each municipality, illustrating just what it expected of its female citizens. (South Korean president Yoon Suk-yeol
won the election in March 2022 with a message that blamed feminism for Korea’s low birth rate, and a promise
to abolish the country’s Ministry of Gender Equality and Family. ) Women were outraged by the map, observing that the government appeared to consider them “livestock”; one Twitter user
reportedly created a mock map illustrating the concentration of Korean men with sexual dysfunction. Several of these digital feminists responded with a boycott to the reproductive labor expected by the state and decided that the surest way to avoid pregnancy was to avoid men altogether. It was through these online communities that 4B emerged as a slogan, and ultimately a movement.
The blowback and fear that 4B practitioners experience underscores their conviction that Korea is still a frightening place for women. Yeowon’s photo was posted on an Ilbe site after participating in a feminist protest, and she was harassed and sexually threatened online for weeks. Youngmi said men have tried to physically attack her on the street three or four times. She recalled an episode when she and some friends, who all had cropped haircuts, were dining at a Japanese restaurant in Daegu. Throughout the night, the restaurant owner and his friends made gagging and puking noises and gestures at them. When Minji and I met at a coffee shop near the city’s central train station, she told me she was worried that someone in the café might post a photo of her online because she had short hair and was speaking openly about feminism. Others I spoke with insisted on using pseudonyms for safety reasons.
There are other consequences to forgoing long-term partnerships with men. Korea has the largest gender pay gap in the rich world, with women earning
31 percent less than men, and women still face widespread discrimination in the labor market, something the movement recognizes. A widely circulated 2018 tweet encouraged 4B women to save the money they would have otherwise spent on “self-fashioning labor” to sustain an independent life instead of winding up “a penniless granny with a wardrobe full of clothes.”
Women who commit to 4B “just work hard, because they know they will not have a breadwinner man or husband,” said Jeong, the scholar who wrote her doctoral thesis on troll feminism, adding that some take two or three jobs. Youngmi and her girlfriend live together about an hour by subway outside of downtown Seoul where rent is more affordable. Yeowon said her small studio apartment, the best option she can afford right now, is in an unsafe neighborhood near a market where drunken men often congregate after the local bars close. Her partner, who works in IT, recently moved apartments because her last one had cockroaches.
Several 4B women I met in Seoul still lived with their parents. Yeowon’s partner lives by herself but still eats at her parents’ house several times a week, even though they are no longer emotionally close. Her mother’s cooking is excellent, she said, and it saves her time and money. “I treat it like a restaurant,” she added. Youngmi and her friends created a map of women-owned businesses in Daegu so they could ensure their dollars went to supporting other women. “The economy is a very important issue for us,” she told me. Other 4B groups host events with personal-finance experts to help women learn how to save and invest. A subgroup of an online community called “WITH” (which stands for “Women in the Hell,” Hell being a nickname for Korea) is specifically focused on economics; members post job listings, advice on which banks are offering the best interest rates, and other financial tips. Han, a math tutor who runs her own tutoring company in Daegu, said she believes as women’s collective economic power grows, so will their political power, something she sees playing out over the next 20 years. Their interest in finance is both about the pressing matter of living an economically viable life today and the longer-term possibility that women practicing 4B at scale will eventually weaken the patriarchy. “When women are more economically influential, then it’s possible that the political parties will listen to women as important voters,” Han added. “But until then, I feel like women will still be utilized — their bodies will be utilized to reproduce.”
But it’s not just political backlash and straightened economic circumstances that pose a threat to the long-term sustainability of 4B and its influence. Like any social movement, 4B has its own internal rifts and divisions: Can 4B women be friends with men? With women who still want to date men? Does lesbianism privatize relationships, destroy feminist solidarity, and resexualize women, or is it a necessary foundation for a world without men? Some 4B practitioners also were turned off by the movement’s focus on cisgender women to the exclusion of trans women; many of the online communities require verification with a photo ID attesting to the applicant’s sex, and Minji said that one of the feminist communities she joined asked her to submit a video of her Adam’s apple, ostensibly to ensure she wasn’t assigned male at birth. But regardless of where they stand on these questions, for the more than a dozen 4B practitioners I met in Korea, these were academic disagreements that had little impact on their own personal commitment to living apart from men.
For a movement born of rage, what happens when the rage mellows or when other concerns take priority? Yeowon said some of her friends are “selective feminists” who forgo makeup when they meet up with her, but are ultimately not ready to give up the advantages that come with being conventionally attractive. “They cannot let go of this power as women, of using femininity,” she said. “There are these feminists who say, ‘Oh, I’m a feminist, I hate men, but I also want to be, you know, consumable.’” She and her friends described videos on YouTube of ex-
bihon women who told viewers that they’d seen the light and returned to heterosexuality, narratives that recall the profusion of #TradWife content online.
At least for now, it is clear that the message of 4B, regardless of how it is practiced, or however closely its followers identify with the label, has provided a refuge for Korean women. Taekyung, 24, is getting her master’s degree in German literature at Ewha University, an all-women’s university with a robust campus feminism movement and a respected gender-studies department. On a beautiful fall day, she proudly walked me around the campus, which dates from the 1880s, showing me the campus gift shop and the area where students socialize and sometimes take naps.
She has tried to avoid men since high school, after doing a research project on Ilbe that brought her to web pages where men had posted nude photos of their female family members and discussed how to get away with rape. She went to Sungshin Women’s University, another all-women’s university, for undergrad. She doesn’t believe in labels for her own sexual orientation and has little interest in dating other women, but she does believe in political lesbianism as a way for women to establish lives separate from men — with an emphasis on the “political” rather than the “lesbian.” “I don’t need to try being a lesbian, because in political lesbianism, I can just be a person, like a normal person — a human being. I can be in a safe place,” she told me as we drank sweet-potato lattes at a campus café. The most important thing, in her view, is the absence of men. “Always, when I use the word ‘safe place,’ it means the place for women.”

| Preppers, techies, hippies, and yuppies are converging on the American West, the safest place to “exit” a society gone haywire. In Vanity Fair By James Pogue February 21, 2023 The elites of the far right don't trust corporate CEOs? Wait, I thought they were the Corporate CEOs! So if everyone is running for the hills, who's minding the store? Read this article and hear the great-great-grand-daughter of John D. Rockefeller claim that Rockefeller cared about the country. OK, I guess in the vision that killing Native Americans, polluting and desecrating landscapes, and bamboozling Americans into abandoning street cars counts as acceptable costs for caring. I think she means something different than I would, if I said " with a lot of these executives [today]. They’re now trying to, it seems to me, break the country down.” This article confuses the xxxx out of me. In his article, James Pugh reports that Wealthy and well-connected preppers and back-to-the-landers have been moving west, many of them at least tangentially involved in the edgy online realm of thought known as the dissident right. Tech executives and crypto investors are creating secretive groups to help people “exit”—a term that has taken on almost mystical significance in some circles recently—from our liberal society, tech-dominated lives, and fraying system. Wait, liberalism is to blame for ecosystem collapse? I thought that individualism and cost-externalization is the problem. Moreover, he tells us, According to this view, the American empire is in danger of fading, weakened by a greedy and insulated oligarchy with more loyalty to their pals in London and Tokyo than to their fellow Americans. The elite have driven regular people into a serflike existence, putting money above every other source of value or meaning: national interest, local cultures, our long-term financial stability, even the environment. So if the oligarchy isn't the far right, who the hell is it? There is some serious mixing of messages here. Here is Ron DeSantis claiming to be a peasant: “These people at the World Economic Forum,” DeSantis told the National Conservatism Conference in September, “they just view us as a bunch of peasants. I can tell you, things like the World Economic Forum are dead on arrival in the state of Florida.” Go read, and give us your take. The buffalo were grazing by the highway on the outskirts of the richest county in the richest country in the history of the world. It was a clear morning in the Tetons, and with binoculars it was possible to see all the way across the valley known, since prehistory, as one of the most secure and comfortable little basins in all of the Mountain West—named, for one of the first white trappers to winter there, Jackson’s Hole. The landscape may have looked like wilderness to the caravanning tourists in $200,000 Sprinter vans and thousands more in athleisure who now flood Teton County year-round. But it is also a kind of hyperreality of money—tens of thousands of acres and hundreds of millions of dollars worth of conservation easements—in what may be the world’s most unequal political jurisdiction. Above the ospreys and eagles, there was a constant traffic of small jets and private aircraft, humming into and out of a town that has become a modern refuge for people with remote jobs and portfolios fattened by one of history’s great asset bubbles, many of them driven to the Northern Rockies by a worry or wariness that the rest of America is on its way toward environmental, political, or economic breakdown. Or some combination of the above. submitted by levdeerfarengin to CollapseAwareBurltnVt [link] [comments] |

2023.02.20 15:10 Basic_Study_3898 A Tale of Ideology and Analysis Paralysis
16 years old. Almost 17 actually. Exams khatam ho gaye aaj. Agar kam marks aaye, then the reason would be my neuroticism around indian politics..... taiyari ki jagah wohi sochta raha main....
Let's begin...
**2019-20**
Around when i was 14, as my political consciousness rose, for the first time - 'Government of India' became more than a GK question for me.
I was aligned with the liberal ideology from the start. It felt natural ........ those were the days of kunal kamra worship. I used to watch mr rathee and akash banerjee back then. The aesthetics in my mind was of congress and AAP as magic wands for USA-fying India and BJP as the the wagon for GOBAR-fication of india with its orthodox ugly religiosity.
At the centre of my beliefs was that liberals were educated and rational unlike the uneducated naive masses which hindutva brainwashed. Also, Manmohan Singh's tenure was of faster gdp growth and capital investment was kept at around 40%. Clearly superior to NDA's.
**2021 starts**
Then something changed. *Tribalism enters the chat*
Crises of identity fuelled by nihilism. Dank memes. Sham Sharma. Post-Truth.
"Politics is an unnatural form of coping with passivity. If you are a political being, then there is something wrong with you. " was my belief now, also - "Obviously our economic conditions depends on what industrial, logistical and human resource infrastructure, we - the free citizens can muster to establish. What ought the government do if the middle class citizens are so cowardly as to avoid risky economic endeavours themselves and rely on government for their well being? I was indifferent to government politics now. My political aspirations were now aligned to my *personal* ambitions - how to be next liu chuanzhi, carnegi or gauss, and then establish new *private* institutions myself for producing many more industrialists like my-would be-self.
*On the nihilism and tribalism that had entered the chat*
Actually, every value that I found important was rendered mediocre in some worldview or the other, be it valuing Machiavellian power, cars or music. I, slowly was becoming disinterested in reading the glory of historical figures, i could not care less about ford v6 vs v8 volkswagon, who cares about wagner?
From being a clear liberal ideologue with a name, i was now a confused no-one. Somehow, even opposing worldviews had some way of finding refuge in my mind and i could construct logic to justify both.
These schizophrenic habits scattered my mind into many different and often opposite modes of thoughts. Such neurotic habits deepens one' state of inaction as one leverages one's mental discomfort for increased existential lamenting.
This is how one becomes a slave to many different ideologies, and in his servitude trying to borrow any meaning into his own existence. Trapped in my self constructed meaningless void, as I sank into nihilistic mental habits, I tried seeking solace in fantastical thinking, often transcending certain values to be important above all else.
Eg: Belligerence makes a man, and his civilisation prosper; no actually its reason and this is how our legacy is so great; no no actually, it is novelty; no no it is spirituality; and this is how we are superior or inferior, blah blah.
You necessarily can't be an individual if you are an ideologue(at least a right wing ideologue), and you become the latter when you are too uncomfortable being unbound by any value.
You try to construct identities that help you makes sense of existence.
**2022 starts**
\*Enters the hindu nationalist identity\*
Man's actions make sense in the context of a historical narrative. Who are we, where have we come from and where are we going.
Was an Indian before, became a Hindu now - Viraat Hindu. Inherited the worldview of in-group sanghi, out-group muslim. Preserve the tribe.
*The answers and questions unanswered*
ans- We are Hindus, indigenous to Bharat.
ans- We have come from the vedas, varna, dhamma, priestly orthodoxy, caste, dharma, puranas, and bhakti. (soul of india - Reincourt)
ans- We are moving towards hindu revivalism.
Seeking identity as a hindu though, comes with a sense of emasculation. No great history, no great written records, foreign people (turanis, syyeds, iranis, afghans and mughals) ruled over you. This exactly pushes the need for revivalism. This is the source of shame and fear, reaction to which is hindutva. So it remains unanswered as yet i.e. who are we - do we have a non-shameful identity, what purpose are we here for?
Rarely was there a strong statism in India. Contrast that with china. Hindus were priestly sects and caste sects, of regional mysticism, worship, etc, but rarely warring, belligerent groups, as is perhaps common of tropical regions- sedentariness, barring few martial races? It feels, then, very obvious how the turko-afghan tribes won over the hindu india.( Durrant)
Hindutva is a movement to cope with that reality.
On the other hand, the "marxist - liberal" education that we all have went through does not ascribe heroism to the ruling dynasties anyway. It has no need to cope i guess.
When i was a peak hindutva ideologue a few months ago, a friend of mine, who was a maths buddy to me as I helped him regularly but had never discussed politics prior to this, said to me something which should have infuriated the living soul out of a sanghi like myself. He, otherwise an intelligent person, said," We ruled you for over 700 years, we are the true masters of this land."
He was no shareef or malik, he was a shahani (not to promote casteism).
But I was not offended, I knew just like I was anxious, so was he himself too - of his heritage and identity, probably surfing through literature and forums that project his ideological smartness.
It did not even bother me, I let him believe that, and did not debate about civil administration by the brahmin mukkadams, powerful parallel hindu empires, jagirs and allies to the padshahs and sultans.
The mountain of effort that went to produce an ideology that could help me (and other like myself) -self preserve as well as protect myself from the very attacks like the above one, was rendered unnecessary in the face of such actual timid attacks.
Having faced what perhaps was obliteratingly shameful to me in an isolated room(confronting the mediocrity of hindu legacy), was something that did not even made me flinch. I just had a smug smile on my face, as I departed from my friend "Sultan" Sakib Shahani, and as I returned home to myself and nihilism again.
I was at peace for sometime that is untill, this status and power anxiety returned again, and then I was off to look for literature which projects hindu superiority. Afterall, for how long does an empty nihilistic mind ought to remain in boring comforts.
I lieu of self-actualization, man falls to the whims of self-preservation. There is no middle ground. If you lack enthusiasm for life, you don't just remain empty, your mind invents fear and shame in lieu of vitality.
You self- preserve, you become a serf to your group interests.
**This was a tale of ideology. So my friends would you help me?*
**Can you answer the following questions?**
- Who are we?
- Where have we come from?
- Where are we going?
P.S. : I am young, yes, no need to be smug and advise me to touch grass. Kya matlab light natural bhi hoti hai?

2023.02.13 09:33 Cheshire-Kate Neera bugged, her quest won't start in ToB
I played through the first half of SoA with Neera, but swapped her out for Imoen in Chapter 4 and ended up finishing the game with her.
When I started ToB I decided to swap Neera in during chapter 8 so I could do her "Destroying the Order of the Eight Staves" companion quest, but when I spoke to the Fate Spirit, she wasn't available as an option to summon. This is despite the fact that she was still alive and well, and I was still able to visit her refuge and re-recruit her during chapter 6. The only way I found that it was possible to get her back in my party was to use the console MoveArea command to move to Neera's refuge and re-recruit her there, then use the console to move back to the pocket plane.
Up to this point, I've done a fair bit of chapter 8 with Neera in my party. I've tried visiting the North Forest multiple times, got Yaga-Shura's heart and brought it back to Nyalee, then went back to the North Forest again after to sell my loot to the merchant there. Jerome has yet to show up, so I've been unable to start the next part of Neera's quest line (yes, the SoA part of it has already been completed).
One forum post I came across suggested setting the OHN_TOB_PLOT and OHN_BIRD_TALK variables to 0. Neither of these variables existed, so I tried setting them to 0, then also tried setting OHN_BIRD_TALK to 0 as a local variable on Neera, and walked around in the north forest, visited another area, came back, returned to the pocket plane, then back to the north forest again, wandered around some more, still no Jerome.
I tried spawning Jerome using the CreateCreature command. I wasn't sure what the correct code was, but OHNJEROME caused a bird to spawn. Unfortunately it wasn't possible for me to initiate conversation with it.
I'm guessing all of this is because I didn't happen to have Neera in my party already when ToB started, so any ToB-specific variables for her never got initialized when I started ToB, and there's one that needs to exist in order for Jerome to show up, but that variable currently isn't set.
Can anyone help me figure this out so I can kill some red wizards?

2023.02.11 13:23 LessCommunication289 I want to share a bit of hope for us
This forum has been a refuge for me since finding it a few months ago and I know so many of us struggle to be heard and/or believed by our providers. So I was offered a bit of hope and even consolation from a Gastroenterologist yesterday that I hope I can share with some of you.
I am a 48 yo female. Since my 3rd round of COVID infection in September of last year, my LH symptoms that had begun during the previous infection in 2021 really increased tremendously. I have struggled with a myriad of symptoms but the most intense are GI and I have lost about 30 lbs. So my PCP referred me to a GI specialist and I saw him for the first time yesterday. Honestly, I wasn’t expecting much from the visit except to get the necessary round of tests ordered like endoscopy and colonoscopy and blood work, etc. However, I was actually met with attentiveness and understanding and even affirmation. The GI told me that he has definitely seen an increase in GI symptoms and worsening of preexisting GI conditions since the beginning of the pandemic. He said that although it can be difficult to pinpoint exactly what changes the virus has caused in the GI tract, it can be done. When I get to the treatment phase I will share more. But in the meantime, maybe this bit of affirmation and hope will help some of you. There are Providers out there who believe us and are seeing firsthand the aftermath of this brutal virus. Take care all and have a Blessed day.

2023.02.09 20:11 DTG_Bot This Week at Bungie -02/09/2023
Source:
https://www.bungie.net/7/en/News/Article/twab-02-09-2023 This week at Bungie, we’re talking about changes to abilities, Strand, and a few other tidbits that we think you should know before Lightfall arrives later this month.
Before we get into the heart of this week’s TWAB, here’s a brief recap of what we talked about in last week’s blog post:
- A recap of our most recent Lightfall Exotics preview.
- A deeper look into upcoming weapon changes.
- A heads up on the 24-hour maintenance downtime window that kicks off on February 27, 2023, at 9 AM PST.
- A message from Black @ Bungie.
- And more.
If you haven’t already, feel free to mosey on over and check out what else you may have missed... after reading this TWAB of course. It’d be rude to leave now, come on.
Here’s a brief overview on what we’re diving into this week:
- We’re catching up on the latest Strand details.
- Diving into performance issues tied to latency, particularly in Crucible.
- Getting creeped out with the latest creepy crawly Festival of the Lost voting and figuring out where we’re going next in Trials of Osiris.
- Looking at the latest in Prime Gaming loot to snag.
- Taking a closer look at the VFX integration of Strand and how that relates to Dresstiny.
- And previewing a few other snippets we think you should know.
Now. On to TWAB!
Support for Syria and Turkey
In the early hours of Monday, February 6 a devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck southern Turkey near the Syrian border. Hours later, the region was hit again by 7.5 magnitude aftershock. Cities across Turkey and Syria lie in destruction, over 11,000 have been killed with many more presumed dead, and hundreds of thousands are seeking refuge during the freezing winter months.
The hearts of the entire team at Bungie go out to all those impacted by this heartbreaking disaster. Since the news broke, the Bungie Foundation and teams across the studio have been actively working to develop a support plan to deliver aid and care to the people and families in the region. Today, we are announcing our plan to help those in Turkey and Syria and we are asking the Bungie community to join us.
The generosity of our community during Game2Give 2022 has enabled us to pledge $50,000 each to our partners at Direct Relief and the International Rescue Committee. These funds will be put to immediate use. These organizations are already supporting the efforts in the region.
- Direct Relief has committed an initial $1 million in aid to support search and rescue operations and healthcare organizations in both countries and has already begun to mobilize its medical aid deliveries that will be critical in treating traumatic injuries caused by falling debris, crush injuries, fractures, and more.
- The International Rescue Committee (IRC) is scaling up their response to support affected communities in both Turkey and Syria, which will include the provision of immediate cash, basic items and hygiene supplies. More than 1,000 IRC staff members in Syria are providing lifesaving healthcare and other support.
CALL TO ACTION: We are asking the Bungie community to join us in supporting the humanitarian aid efforts in the region. A special emblem has been designed to show support for the relief efforts. Compassion Concentric will be available to all Guardians who donate $25 or more at https://bung.ie/quake. All funds raised during this campaign will go directly to Direct Relief and the IRC.
Image LinkimgurThe Compassion Concentric emblem was created for humanitarian aid purposes. It was inspired by our desire to help communities in times of need and to create a sense of calm and support for those who use and see it.
Our community always shows up in times of need and the people in the Turkey and Syria need a Guardian’s Light now more than ever! Thank you so much for your generosity and support.
Love,
The Bungie Foundation
Every Day is Fly Day with Strand
If you ever thought to yourself, “Self, I’d really like to get my Spider-Man on but make it green,” then you’re in luck! Strand is swinging its way into Destiny 2 with Lightfall, and to celebrate the upcoming launch, we dove deep into what this new subclass will have to offer with a nifty standalone article and a shiny new trailer. Here’s a brief recap on all the radioactive-green goodness that was shared earlier this week for Strand:
- New terms to learn like suspend, unravel, and sever.
- A breakdown of what Strand looks like for all classes.
- A first look at new Fragments.
- And a few other pieces of the Lightfall puzzle that we think you’ll enjoy.
If you missed the trailer (or just want to want it again—which, we get it), check out the glorious green goodness below that is Strand.

You can also read the full blog post right here.
We Need to Talk About Latency
Earlier this Season, we started investigating a new latency issue. The end-effect you would see is one or more players standing against a wall or not taking any damage for several seconds, teleporting across the map, and possibly killing you. After learning that this could even happen in private matches, we were able to eliminate the new matchmaking changes as a possible cause. We then looked at new features as the possible culprit and after ruling those out, we started looking at external sources.
Valve has constantly been making improvements to its Steam Datagram Relay (SDR) service to provide safe, high-quality Destiny 2 connections. In this case, they found new relays which were not configured properly and severely impacted network quality between players during peak hours. The problematic relays were taken offline at 3 PM last Friday pending a more thorough investigation, and this appears to have resolved the immediate issue for players.
Image Link.png)imgurA breakdown of connection changes since the start of Season 19.
While this doesn’t solve all latency problems in the game, it has fixed this particularly thorny issue that has plagued the game since the start of Season 19. In our own investigations, we also found a few hidden bugs that should be fixed with Lightfall. These should improve network quality even further for players with good network connections.
With Great (Strand) Power Comes Great Fashionability
For those of you looking to make other Guardians a little green with envy when it comes to your fashion sense, we’ve got good news. When Lightfall launches, every item that changes its appearance based on your currently equipped subclass will be compatible with Strand. Whether it’s a piece of Solstice armor from year’s past, a favorite finisher, or one of our new subclass-based emotes, you’ll soon be able to express yourself in Strand colors when using a Strand subclass.
- 2020, 2021, and 2022 Solstice Armor Sets
- Subclass-Agnostic Legendary Finishers
- “Ghost Fist Bump” Exotic Emote
- Aneatus Wards and Ornaments
- No Backup Plans and Ornaments
- Ghost Projections
For those of you who prefer function over fashion (weird, but alright): good news! The following armor and weapon perks will also be compatible with Strand, when applicable, come Lightfall:
- Elemental Capacitor
- Osmosis
- Explosive Payload
- Dragonfly
- Cluster Bombs
- Chain Reaction
- Chromatic Fire’s “Crystalline Transistor”
- Mantle of Battle Harmony’s “Absorption Cells”
- The Bombadiers’ “Parting Gift”
- Verity’s Brow’s “The Fourth Magic”
- Felwinter’s Helm’s “Warlord’s End”
- And more as a possibility in the future post-launch
Start thinking about how you’ll weave these fashion updates into your transmog and perk updates into your loadouts for the next step of Destiny 2’s story. Calus is clearly upping his fashion game, it’s only fair we do the same.
Does This Update... “Resonate” With You
Some early warning for folks looking to prepare for weapon crafting in Lightfall.
As part of an initiative to integrate weapon crafting into the broader core economy, we will be completely removing Resonant Elements from the game. Standard currencies such as Glimmer, Enhancement Cores, etc. will replace the Element costs that exist today.
We’ll also be removing the Deepsight attunement objective altogether.
Resonant and Harmonic Alloys will still be used at launch; however, we are planning to overhaul these currencies later in the Lightfall year. Ascendant Alloys will remain as is for now.
Much of this info is hot off the presses, so apologies for the late warning!
A Prime Day for Some Prime Gaming
Guardians... it’s time. Time to snag some extra gear for your Lightfall adventures. For those space magic-wielding players that are a part of the Prime Gaming club, we’ve got a new bundle to grab:
Image LinkimgurPrime Gaming drop
- Sunshot, Exotic Hand Cannon
- Red Dwarf, Sunshot Weapon Ornament
- Jotuneer, Exotic Sparrow
- Ghost Projection
- And an additional surprise
For anyone that may need a refresher, Prime Gaming is a program with Amazon Prime that offers Guardians a select few Exotics and Legendary goods to unlock. It’s super easy to use too. Just sign up for your Prime Gaming account and link it to your Bungie.net account. (If you have Amazon Prime, congrats! You also have Prime Gaming). Once signed in, you can select the spiffy cosmetics link to claim them, and then they’ll be waiting for you in the Tower with Amanda Holiday the next time you log in.
We Asked, You Answered—And Things Got Creepy-Crawly
We asked Guardians to weigh in on what they want to see for this year’s Festival of the Lost and what the next Trials of Osiris map should be. But first, let’s talk those creepy crawlies.
Image LinkimgurSpiders vs. Beetles
Why did spiders take out beetles nearly across the board when it came down to player votes? Probably because they’re more acclimated to... living on the web. Bad puns aside, spider chic took the win despite the intriguing look of beetle fashion. We did things differently this year by allowing Guardians to vote for each class, and that seemed to work out well! Here’s a breakdown of our latest Festival of the Lost voting and where exactly Team Beetle lost the fight:
- Hunters had 56 percent of the vote for Team Spider.
- Titans also said they were Team Spider with a whopping 72 percent of the votes.
- Warlocks broke the mold altogether with Team Beetle taking 53 percent of the votes.
Let’s get creepy.
As for Trials... drumroll please? The winner is:
- Radiant Cliffs with 44 percent of the total vote is the Trials map of choice starting tomorrow at reset!
See you this weekend, Guardians.

DESTINY CONTENT VAULT UPDATE
The Destiny Content Vault (DCV) Guide has been updated with information on what activities, vendors, and destinations will enter the DCV with the launch of Lightfall.
Expansion content will no longer be added to the DCV. Players can expect all Season 16-19 content to enter the DCV, excluding the Season 16 PsiOps Battlegrounds and the Season 19 Heist Battlegrounds, which will instead be added to the Vanguard Ops playlist beginning in Season 20.
ITEMS BEING DEPRECATED AT THE START OF YEAR 6
With the launch of Lightfall on February 28, 2023, Destiny 2 will transition from Year 5 to Year 6. At this time certain items will become deprecated, and no longer available to use. For a list of items going away at the start of Year 6, please click here.
For more information on the different years of Destiny and Destiny 2, please see our Years of Destiny article here.
KNOWN ISSUES
While we continue investigating various known issues, here is a list of the latest issues that were reported to us in our #Help forum.
- Players who receive a leaver penalty in Competitive Division may be unable to launch into the playlist once their leaver penalty has expired. This can be resolved by swapping characters and playing another match in the playlist.
- VFX from the Symmetry Exotic perk “Revolution” may continue to display for players once the weapon is stowed.
- The “Push the Objective” Crucible bounty does not gain progress in Momentum Control.
- Daily Crucible bounties for capturing zones in Control are unable to be completed when Iron Banner is active.
- The requirements for the completion of the week-nine Icy Singularity Seasonal Challenge are incorrectly listed in its description. Players must defeat targets with Void or Stasis effects during Gambit matches in order to progress this Challenge.
For a full list of emergent issues in Destiny 2, players can review our Known Issues article. Players who observe other issues should report them to our #Help forum.
There’s Nothing Artificial About This Week’s Picks
Image Linkimgur
Before we dive into this week’s picks, we wanted to talk about our Movie and Art of the Week section a little bit:
How do I tag MOTW and AOTW?
We’ve noticed that the standard #MOTW and #AOTW tags are starting to get a little convoluted with other content, some a little less appropriate than others. To make sure that your submissions are seen online by the wider community, we want to encourage the use of #Destiny2AOTW and #Destiny2MOTW going forward!
Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) Art
Last week, an A.I. art submission was mistakenly featured in our blog. The process of choosing these involves a team effort and with this technology being so new, we don’t have a foolproof way of knowing what submissions are A.I. art.
We want to keep this celebration of our community for those that work hard to bring their creative selves to the forefront when creating works that the Traveler would find joy in. Because of this, we will not knowingly ever feature A.I. art submissions as a potential #Destiny2AOTW or #Destiny2MOTW winner. That being said, this is still new. We ask for grace if we mistakenly feature a submission generated by A.I., and a respectful heads up should it ever happen again in the future. Appreciate the assist!
Friends That Join In
Emblems take time and we’ve seen instances where two to three folks working on a video suddenly turns into twenty or more and often the same names circulate on a significant number of submissions that are unrelated to one another. To keep these going, something needed to change. The same rule still applies from before: “Any person involved must be listed in the original posting for #Destiny2AOTW and #Destiny2MOTW submissions. Late additions will not be included.” However, we’re adding one more thing to note. Please ensure that all Bungie Profiles are included in the initial post (threads at the same time are fine!) and that the number of creators does not exceed seven. We hope this change will keep the process of awarding the Art and Movie emblems honest and something that indicates the celebration of our community.
Now onto said community!
Bruno: Guardians have done so many things in the last few years. Took out Ghaul, woke up the Traveler and... well, you know the rest. But sometimes it's those working behind the scenes that can make a real difference, and even the most heroic character would be lost without their help. Take that into consideration the next time you visit the Enclave.

And that’s a wrap on another TWAB. Lightfall will be here before we know it and we know that many of you still have more questions. Don’t worry, we’ve got a few more things to share before February 28, but until then...
Make sure you’re drinking that water, keeping up with that self-care, and always leading with your kindest foot forward. Until next time, friends.

Q&A
Q: When will [insert game name here] be cracked?
A: STOP! CrackWatch members are not psychic. Games get cracked by completely ANONYMOUS SCENE GROUPS who don't disclose their progress or plans to the general public so NO ONE knows WHEN and IF a certain game will be cracked.
Q: What are all these NFO thingies? Where do I download?
A: NFOs are text files included with game releases which contain information about the releases. CrackWatch only informs which games have been cracked. To download look for the releases on CS.RIN.RU's forum or torrent websites. Useful websites can be found in The Beginners Guide or PiratedGames's Mega Thread.
Q: WTF is Denuvo?
A: Denuvo is a Digital Rights Management (DRM) technology used to protect games from being cracked. Games that have Denuvo are harder to crack and usually take much longer. See Pinned Post for a list of Denuvo games.
Q: An update is out, but it includes the base game as well! Can I only download the update without redownloading the entire game?
A: Yes. CS.RIN.RU is your friend.

He has 10 patents, all regarding space Propulsion .He'd also been handpicked for the Clementine moon missions Dept project Manager. Naturally, because he's the principal inventor of MET electric propulsion used in at least 2 Mars probes Observers in the 90s. He left NASA after JPL(Just Plain liars, his words) called and said they'd knocked down the probe that we've been told
Failed, the red planet is their jurisdiction. Afterwards he begins to notice how NASA was disregarding actual science to protect certain established narratives. He leaves & becomes top plasma propulsion physicist at The Aerospace Corporation (TS/SCI clearance), where Bob Fish mentions being told about the USAF tracking UAPs from a landing takeoff spot in the Atlantic. Here he shows someone data, without telling them the area the data is from.. immediately his colleagues say "Oh, someone nuked em", but immediately changed tunes upon learning the data was from Mars. He leaves & is Chief Scientist at Sandia Labs, Orbital Tech, MRI (where he created the MET) & finally Kepler. He's ALWAYS recruited for the head Scientist positions, being one of the top plasma physicist & space Propulsion experts on the planet.
Brandenburg was brought back for a Mars Project in 2006 Here's a safe dl link for you guys.
Life & Death on Mars (safe pdf link) the surface of Mars is covered excessively with uranium and thorium. This has led some scientists like Dr. John Brandenburg to conclude that it’s very likely that TWO large ANOMALOUS nuclear explosions took place on Mars in the distant past. Dr. Brandenburg argues: that Mars shows, “…based on new data, evidence that during this period of Earthlike climate, biological evolution produced, at length, a humanoid civilization leaving ruins at several sites, Cydonia Mensa and Galaxias Chaos being two sites most intensively investigated. Data from these sites formed the basis for the Cydonian Hypothesis (Brandenburg, DiPietro, and Molenaar, 1991) of
an ancient, indigenous , approximately Bronze Age civilization on Mars.” notice this is the same description from the Thiaoouba Prophecy. It is well known that over time, a planet’s atmosphere can become heavily eroded, especially on Mars where there isn’t a strong magnetic field. When this occurs, lighter isotopes become more eroded than those heavier ones which ultimately results in the increase in heavier isotopes.
Evidence for Thermonuclear Catastrophe on Mars Dr. Brandenburg explains how Xenon 129 is produced in devices on Earth: “In order to boost the yield of a hydrogen bomb, the bomb casing is typically made of uranium 238 or thorium. Accordingly, Xenon 129 is produced only in small amounts by normal fission, but in a conventional hydrogen bomb explosion it is produced in large amounts.” Furthermore, Dr. Bradenburg looked at the distributional patterns of uranium and thorium on the surface of the red planet and had concluded that they are CONSISTENT with nuclear explosions which were centered on TWO specific points on the planet. “The high concentration of Xe in the Martian atmosphere is a unique feature of Mars atmosphere and differs starkly from the isotopic mass spectrum of xenon elsewhere in the solar system. This feature is found both in the isotopic spectra seen by landers and also that seen in Mars Meteorites,” concluded Dr. Brandenburg..
Project Stargate-
McMoneagle explain our obsession throughout history. Mentions people who were tall, skinny, waiting on a message inside a pyramid..the pyramid complex was discovered on Mars, and so happens to be the ONLY area where Hi-Res photos were taken during Viking '76 Mars landing. MAJ Gen Stubblebine was murdered recently, the guy who brought Stargate , #1 Army Intel official who says McMoneagle saw what they expected to see. Stargate coordinates were the same as the Viking landing! Ive made about a dozen thread's on the Giza complex
Pyramid and I'm not guessing when I say they were used for communication among other things..
2 seshat Measures space-time thread is
3.
Arabian traditions linked the pyramid with the Flood. In a manuscript preserved in the Bodleian Library, and translated by Dr. Sprenger, Abou Balkhi says: "The wise men, previous to the Flood, foreseeing an impending Judgment from heaven, either by submersion or fire, which would destroy every created thing, built upon the tops of the mountains in Upper Egypt many pyramids of stone, in order to have some refuge against the approaching calamity. We also see in Egypt the invention of the telescope and the building of pyramids, which Beelzebub calls “observatories.” A telescope was placed deep within the pyramid. From there specialists observed other suns and planets of the universe and also determined and intentionally directed “the course of the surrounding atmosphere in order to obtain the ‘climate’ desired.” Maybe it's a sort of
homing sense , we care more about Mars than this planet, maybe it's because we don't feel at home . The tall people McMoneagle saw could explain over 70% of people who will have back problems, no underlying issue or injury. Why so many cultures globally, all refer to Mars as their respective God of War. Some will say this was because Mars could be seen at certain times, etc but they won't look at Brandenburgs research.Surprising? 🤔Maybe what's remembered is this ancient war that decimated the planet & caused this migration. Chinese, Maya, Romans, & ancient Babylonians, and African tribes who claim to come from 'Mars on a ship'. The Mahabharata describes a nuclear war, which Dr Oppenheimer quotes after the first Trinity nuclear test. He was shaken up, "melancholic" while his fellow Manhattan Project scientist celebrated. This is because he was looking at things from an informed perspective. He was a avid student of the Vedas. NASA is only now claiming discovery of
ancient lakes , while it's Mars expert says that this has been known since at least the 70s.
Here is the entire
BRANDENBURG thread.
Here A thread I made on the lost continentS known as Kasskara/Atlantis and I talk about how they were of the red race, taller than us and robust, with a dolichocephalic skull, elongated toward the back. It was their natural anatomy, Nefertiti is a perfect example of it. They were very wise, with high technology, and until near the end, had advanced spiritual development. Could this explain most pregnancy related deaths occurring during childbirth?
I've made a post recently on the Looking Glass technology that prompted Adm Wilson's investigating the secret UAP project & how there are a couple different instances that show the CIA has the device. There was a sumerian Cylinder seal given to humanity with this technology on it as well, and it seems that the Rockefellers were working on knowledge of the future with regards to the oil in Vietnam. The tale according to our people was there was a "rogue world" that had seas of petroleum that collided with another to form the asteroid belt & here it also left petroleum in our oceans. This sank for the years & lead to the massive deposits in various parts of the world. The area that comes up is precisely where they were focused as we know now.

2023.01.29 04:19 Kimba93 The issue of domestic violence
In the whole debate about domestic violence in the men's forums, I often hear the statement: Men get abused in at least half of the time (some say it's 70% of the times, as "studies have shown", many say that all men they know have been abused). This is often followed up with saying "There is no help available for men", as in there are no (or almost no) shelters for abused men, and that there is a bias against male victims (the Duluth model is often mentioned), and that feminists have attacked attempts to open shelters for male victims.
I don't think it's very important to know how high the percentage of abusers is to acknowledge that both men and women can get abused. The exact numbers don't matter: Men deserve help, period. This has to be said first, because fighting about the numbers seemed to have been misunderstood as "denying" that men can get abused, which is of course not true. And yes, I disagree with the numbers often times shown by the MRA. If you look at surveys, many of them have results that men and women both experienced domestic violence at the same rates, or men at higher rates. But the crucial detail is the difference between small incidents and serious violence (and injuries), as these are the things that are likely to lead someone needing help to escape. And in the vast majority of surveys, women were much, much more likely to
experience serious violence than men, and this is also true in the worst cases of domestic violence: 70-80% of domestic violence killings are men killing women.
Before we go any further, I think it's important to take a deep breath and try to stay calm.
The fact that women are more likely to be victims of serious abuse than men doesn't mean that all men are evil, that men can't get abused, that abused men don't deserve help, that men need to pay reparations for the next 1000 years, etc. Forget that. Men aren't evil, men can get abused and deserve help, and men don't need to be punished collectively for the acts of other men. It's not about that. The only thing that it means is that women are more likely to be victims of serious abuse, that's all. But what about "There is no help for men"? Well, there can be more help for men, I definitely agree. But it's dishonest and harmful to say "there's no help." There are shelters that only take women, and they have a right to exist (as some women are traumatized because of their experience and feel safer in a female-only housing), just like male-only shelters have a right to exist. But thankfully, things aren't that horrible, there is help available for male victims of abuse.
In the U.S., the majority of domestic violence help organizations do
offer help for men too:
86.9 percent of the programs that have completed their profiles at DomesticShelters.org say they welcome male victims of domestic violence. (Also important to note, you don’t need to be seeking shelter to reach out to a domestic violence program.)
If you google, you can find hundreds of shelters in the U.S. that take men. There are many places for
help for men in the UK too:
Overall there are 269 refuge or safe house spaces for men. 89 spaces are dedicated, 180 are non-dedicated. These are run by 42 organisations. For dedicated spaces (refuge or safe house), it is 12 organisations (median spaces is 4).
The same is true in many other countries, Canada, Australia, Germany, etc., the notion that "men get no help" is false. No one says there can't be more help - yes, there can and should be - but there's no reason to ignore all the help that already exists.
Finally, there are accusations that the Duluth model was evil because it said only men can commit abuse and that it's because of patriarchy, and feminists attacked attempts to open shelters for male victims of domestic violence. This is not true. The Duluth model has been criticized by many (including feminists) because it might be ineffective, but it never said that "only men can commit abuse." It was just a program that was designed for male perpetrators,
as they said:
The Duluth curriculum is designed for male perpetrators. (...) We do agree that there are a small number of women who use violence resulting in police action against their partners without themselves being abused. For these women, a separate gender-specific counseling program may be appropriate.
You can criticize the Duluth model all you want, that they are wrong about the causes, that they downplay female abuse, that they have the wrong solutions, etc., but no, they never said "only men can commit abuse." This is important, as there are people online who literally believe that "because of the Duluth model" the police had to arrest men whenever there was a case of domestic violence, which is completely false. It was never "illegal" (sic!) to arrest a woman for abuse, this is an outrageous lie. You can see in the police statistics that for decades, in every year around 20% of all people arrested by the police because of domestic violence were women.
Far from being against shelters for men, feminists have embraced shelters that help male victims. The myth that feminists are against shelters for men come from Erin Pizzey saying she was threatened for trying to open a shelter for men without showing any evidence for it, and completely baseless stories about feminists bullying Earl Silverman to suicide for doing the same. In reality, when a male-only shelter opened in Nebraska, there were no attacks from feminists,
on the contrary:
Men had been sheltered in a six-bedroom facility in the past, but the Taylor House Domestic Violence Shelter for Men appears to be the first registered shelter for males in the country.
We think this is a wonderful idea. Men - and everyone - deserve safety and care without being blamed or stigmatized. The same sexist stereotypes that harm women can also harm men, and we’re so happy to see that men in one neighborhood have somewhere to turn.
Overall, the issue of domestic violence is one issue where I think things are much better than they were in the past, especially
before the 1960s. I think in future there can still be done more to help male victims (and raise awareness that there is already help), and this is more important than to fight about the numbers or denying that help for men exists.

2023.01.28 04:52 AMidnightGarden 23 [F4M] BC Canada / Anywhere - Let's Put Our Heads Together and Dream Of A Future We Can Never Have
Dearest Redditors,
A little over three years ago,
I made my first post on this forum. My interactions have ranged from lukewarm chats to an unlikely friendship with someone halfway across the globe.
Reflecting upon all that has transpired over these few years has made me wonder about the life I could've lived. And who I could've lived it with. Did a kindred spirit miss my post by a mere few days? Was there an unopened orange envelope that could've led to a beautiful romance? Was there a soulful young man who would've given me a heartfelt reply if he’d only discover this subreddit? But regardless of these thoughts, I am grateful for those whom I've crossed paths with.
Lately, I've had a fantasy that takes these musings a step further.
I envision myself lying in bed with a young man, our limbs intertwined, a downy comforter tucked to our shoulders. A galaxy projector paints patterns along the ceiling, drawing constellations across his face. On the far side of the room, an icy breeze blows in, and I’m acutely aware that he’s not here with me. He’s just a ghost. An apparition of my forlorn heart.
Nevertheless, within my mind, we warm the silence with the flame of our joint future. Not of the broken world we inhabit now, but of a different one. One where there is no economic crisis, no climate change, and no great plague threatening to destroy us all.
With tempered excitement, we discuss buying a small condo in a charming little town. You’ll paint the walls while I grow parsley and basil on our window sills. When winter clenches its frigid fist upon the world, we’ll light a fire and make hearty stews and pastries. As the leaves turn bronze and gold, we’ll go apple-picking. Then, we’ll tandem bike beneath the summer sun. We’ll convert a van and travel several weeks out of the year. We’ll read books and discuss their depth late into the night. We may have friends, family, and hobbies yet we always seek refuge within each other's companionable warmth.
Although a city or country away, we’ve touched each other’s hearts and minds in a way no one else has. Over the phone, in the wee hours of the night, we dare to dream of a future we can never have.
When I was younger, I was adamant that common interests were the key to compatibility. Now, I’ve grown to appreciate differences. I also believe shared values,
such as the desire to not have children, and common life goals are paramount. The one quality I’ve remained firm upon is having a robust intellectual and emotional connection. I’d love to have someone to share articles, short stories, and Omeleto films for discussion. I consider myself a highly talkative person and would prefer someone equally verbose.
I prefer someone between the ages of 22-30. Height matters not for I know men cannot control that. I do however want someone who keeps himself in a healthy physical condition. Although I enjoy a “Switch”, I prefer my men to be on the more Dominant side. I wish for both of us to have stable career trajectories and the possibility to relocate when the time is right. From previous experience, I’ve found that anyone more than 3 hours outside of the PST time zone is simply too much of an obstacle to build a romantic connection with.
If you’ve reached the end of my midnight musings, thank you for reading. I hope to hear from you soon.

2023.01.21 20:20 ahookinherhead Instinctual Sub-Types Personal Thoughts
So I've been reading a lot about the instinctual sub-types lately. I know people have varying feelings about the enneagrammeBHE people (based on the research I did on this forum--wow, a lot of feelings there!) I am reading John Luckovich's book about the instinctual types as well as Beatrice Chestnut's book and they both have been helpful for me to figure out my push-pull against the social instinct.
I used to think I was social blind because I feel such conflict around the social instinct. A sense of not fitting, feeling alien, feeling like there is no place for me has haunted me all my life. When I was younger, I took a superior attitude, almost used this as a badge of honor: I know way more about these obscure topics than everyone else, so that's why I don't fit, because everyone else is stupid/not able to know what I know. So who cares if I can't connect with people if I've convinced myself they are not worth knowing? But the older I got, the more I realized this was a defense that was not serving me and also simply untrue. But I have always felt a pull toward contributing something to the world, which puts me in this constant conflict with myself--how do I contribute while also never letting other people touch me (figuratively. well, also literally.). So I have created ways to feel like I'm contributing something to the world despite feeling like I don't have what it takes to navigate it properly. I have used the things I know I feel confident in (my literary knowledge, my writing ability, my counseling knowledge and work) to have a place, like an armor, and to put myself in spaces where I feel I can be competent, can be the "smartest person in the room" but use that desire to have a place socially. I am a lot more aware of this than I was in the past, so I don't feel quite so driven by those waves, but they are still there.
Long story short, I think I'm actually So/SP SX blind. My SP is very evident, but it doesn't cause me any conflict. My SP makes me feel absolutely okay with my boundaries, makes me feel my SP qualities are a refuge, it doesn't feel desperate or difficult to access or like something that makes my life smaller. My SO, though, creates this incredibly tension and desire that feels difficult to resolve. SX stuff feels alien and difficult to even conceptualize.
I'm now interested in how exactly to touch into that SX blind spot and how to get more aware of that SO and ways I still hold a lot of anxiety there.

2023.01.21 20:04 lily-irl M723 - Arctic Developmental Strategy Motion - Division
Division! Clear the lobby. Arctic Developmental Strategy Motion
THIS HOUSE RECOGNISES THAT:
(1) The need for a thorough renewal in Arctic strategy to be implemented is more than ever as various environmental, political and socio-economic concerns place the Arctic at the center of international development, science and research, foreign policy and global commerce.
(2) The Arctic Council (consisting of; Canada, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Russia*, Sweden, and the United States) is the pre-eminent intergovernmental regional forum for discussing sustainable development and environmental protection in the Arctic. The Council, with its vision for peace, stability and constructive cooperation in the Arctic, is rightly heralded for its role in promoting cooperation and coordination between the Arctic States and for ensuring that the indigenous peoples are central to their discussions.
(3) Cooperation and collaboration helps to deliver better solutions and help to build confidence between nations. The UK research community has a strong record of collaborating internationally and delivering high impact Arctic research.
(4) The United Nations set Global Goals for Sustainable Development, which recognised the importance of taking urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts; to conserving and sustainably using marine resources; and of life on land. The UK should be firmly committed to delivering these goals at home and around the World. According to the WWF, the continued rise of emissions could see the arctic be ice-free by summer 2040. The dangerous impact of climate change on the arctic manifests itself through —
(a) Temperature change seen in extreme winters: as the polar jet stream—a high-pressure wind that circles the Arctic region—is destabilized by warmer air, it can dip south, bringing bitter cold with it.
(b) Places coastal areas and communities at risk since riding seas endanger them and small island nations by exacerbating coastal flooding and storm surge, making dangerous weather events even more so. Glacial melt of the Greenland ice sheet is a major predictor of future sea level rise; if it melts entirely, global sea levels could rise 20 feet.
(c) Wildlife habitat and damaged ecosystems when there’s less sea ice, animals that depend on it for survival must adapt or perish. Loss of ice and melting permafrost spells trouble for polar bears, walruses, arctic foxes, snowy owls, reindeer, and many other species. As they are affected, so too are the other species that depend on them, in addition to people. Wildlife and people are coming into more frequent contact – and often conflict – as wildlife encroach on Arctic communities, looking for refuge as their sea ice habitat disappears.
(d) The release of methane from permafrost that stores large amounts of methane, a greenhouse gas that contributes to climate change. When it thaws, that methane is released, increasing the rate of warming. This, in turn, causes more ice and permafrost to thaw or melt, releasing more methane, causing more melting. As we lose more ice more quickly and see more rapid permafrost melt, we will start seeing the worst climate change predictions come true.
(5) Increased interest and commercial activity in the region provides potential for heightened tension. The Arctic States are well within their rights to protect and defend their area of national jurisdiction, and Arctic nations may want to enhance their security presence in the region to protect their own territorial and commercial interests. However, the build-up of Arctic military capabilities by several Arctic States makes the future less certain.
(6) The Arctic Council established the Arctic Economic Council in 2014 as an independent organisation to facilitate business and responsible economic development through sharing best practices, technological solutions and standards. They work across the Arctic states to strengthen market connections, encourage private-public partnerships for infrastructure investments and facilitate knowledge and data exchange between industry and academia. Membership of the Arctic Economic Council is open to any business, trade association or indigenous group that have an economic interest in the Arctic.
(7) Currently, half of the world’s volume of trade travels through the South China Sea. A reduction in summer sea ice cover in the Arctic has potential to open up new shipping routes. Estimates report that transporting goods between Asia and Northern Europe through the Northern Sea Route could significantly reduce travel time, making the journey as much as 10 days shorter than the Suez route, thereby reducing costs, the amount of fuel utilised and consequently pollutants emitted into the environment. Transportation through Arctic waters may become cheaper and less impactful on the global environment in the long run.
(8) Chinese ambitions to link their Belt and Road Initiative to the Arctic opening trade routes in a Polar Silk Road has potential risks. It is important that projects meet international standards and best practice, such as responsible lending, sustainability and alignment with the objectives of the Paris Agreement, appropriate project design, and transparent procurement.
THEREFORE THIS HOUSE URGES GOVERNMENTS:
(1) To Seek Ascension to the Arctic Council
(a) The Government should work to secure Britain's place in the Arctic council, whether as an observer member or full time member in order to project global influence and secure shared interests.
(b) to primarily maintain the Arctic as a peaceful and stable region. Integral to this is recognising that the vast majority of the Arctic region falls within the sovereign jurisdiction of the eight Arctic States. Our leadership is vital to sustain a safe, secure and peaceful region. Given our close proximity to the Arctic and its connection with the global systems, the Government should reaffirm commitment to support and work in partnership with the eight Arctic States and the region’s indigenous peoples, to uphold this position.
(2) Build Greater relations with the Arctic States
(a) It is in the interests of the Government to further mutual goals in working towards greater relations and cooperative efforts with the Arctic States. The Arctic nations have a strong mutual interest in ensuring that collective decisions about the future of the Arctic are made in light of the best science available and the Government should ensure Britain's role in this which can be supported through —
(i) the creation of Arctic Partnership Agreements to enable UK researchers and services (and vice versa) to share and cooperate in areas of high quality research and projects. Helping to further a collective understanding in the opportunities, threats and innovative responses towards factors such as climate change.
(3) Leading into Science, Research & Development
(a) The Government should aid in the establishment of a long-term fund for the Arctic Office within the Natural Environment Research Council operating on long term support to sustain arctic interests and development.
(b) The Arctic Office Fund should play an integral role in: promoting and enabling UK research; providing advice to policy-makers; and seeking out new opportunities for the UK-based researchers to join international research collaborations. Varied research including: glaciology; hydrology; terrestrial and marine biology; geology; and, atmospheric physics. In addition, the station is able to support innovative engineering and design research, including the testing of new technology for polar and cold-weather applications.
(c) Promote international engagement and cooperation through —
(i) the development of another Ice, Climate, Economics – Arctic Research on Change (ICE-ARC) programme in a greater multilateral effort to assess future changes in Arctic sea ice both from changing atmospheric and oceanic conditions;
(ii) supporting and facilitating UK-based researchers to be active in greater regional research efforts and initiatives through grants and expenses covering.
(4) Indigenous Affairs
(a) To strengthen relationships with the many varied indigenous communities and their respective organizations or groups, which include but are not limited to: Aleut International Association, Arctic Athabaskan Council, Gwich'in Council International, Inuit Circumpolar Council, Russian Association of Indigenous Peoples of the North and the Saami Council.
(b) Assist with and support indigenous communities in ensuring that their cultural heritage sites in the Arctic region are given the highest level of UNESCO cultural heritage site status.
(c) Increase funding into Indigenous educational, cultural, tourist, economic and environmental initiatives in the region.
(d) Recommend that the government adopt measures in consultation with Nunavut, Yukon and the Greenland Parliaments when making appropriate efforts to reach global goals.
(5) Environmental Protection & Sustainable Development
(a) Remain committed to sustainable and green growth through legislation and action plans in an effort to fulfill the UK’s emission reduction ambitions. Suggested innovative policy such as —
(i) a commitment towards the development of low and eventually zero emission shipping through greater technological investment and regulatory frameworks.
(b) Remain committed to international agreements in order to conserve the Arctic’s biodiversity, being a key priority in environmental concerns. Done so through an international level, wherever feasible and reasonable, to develop and sustain global conservation goals such as strengthening British affirmation of the global moratorium on commercial whaling.
(c) Safeguarding British and shared waters from unnecessary pollutants and chemicals in order to ensure a healthy, safe and productive Arctic. This can be aided through Britain taking a leading role in international regulatory developments aimed to protect Oceans where —
(i) the Government should work towards developing domestic mercury legislation in order to ratify the UN Minamata Convention on Mercury to protect human and environmental health from the adverse effects of mercury. Action includes; a ban on mercury mines, reduction in mercury found in several products and processes, and control measures on the emissions of mercury into the atmosphere, as well as on land and water;
(ii) Sign and ratify the Ballast Water Convention into UK law for the 2024 deadline. The convention aims to prevent the spread of harmful aquatic organisms from one region to another and halt damage to the marine environment from ballast water discharge, by minimising the uptake and subsequent discharge of sediments and organisms. Following the deadline, all ships are required under the convention to have the approved Ballast Water Management Treatment System in order to achieve this;
(iii) Adhere to the reduction of the ‘International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships’ (MARPOL) Global Cap on Sulphur content of fossil fuel used by shipping by incorporating it into legislation.
(d) In areas extending from national jurisdiction, it is recommended to act through the new implementing clause under the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNICLOS). The Government should aid, alongside the Arctic council, in the consideration of the establishment of a pan-Arctic network of marine protected areas and British support in effectively implementing such projects.
(e) Encouraged to look into increasing funding towards an Ocean Acidification Research Programme (under the NERC) of £12 million across a five year period (subject to renewals) to address increasing ocean acidity which presents risks to marine ecosystems including the productivity of fisheries and aquaculture.
(6) Considerations of Security & Defence Capabilities
(a) The Government should remain committed to preserving the stability and security of the Arctic region. Supported by working with international partners and allies through defence engagement, bilateral and multilateral security cooperation. This can include essential cold weather training exercises and participation in the Arctic Security Forces Roundtable. NATO also remains a central plank for cooperation among its Arctic State members.
(b) Ensuring the Arctic remains a peaceful and uncontested region, as growing concerns over increased military activity and capitalisation over Arctic assets.
(c) Engage in dialogue with all parties that hold claim to the Arctic and propose within the Arctic territory, either in whole or in part, an enforced demilitarized zone. Following a similar framework to the Antarctica Treaty.
(7) Economic Development & Trade
(a) The Government should ensure possible economic and commercial development occurs in a sustainable and responsible manner. In which the people of the region benefit from the prosperity that an inevitably changing Arctic may bring where government may —
(i) aid in the support of companies investing in the Arctic; make them aware, and connect them to, the opportunities available
(ii) and support the expansion of ‘Green Finance’ with the development of sustainable finance management standards to promote responsible investment practices globally.
(b) Encourage UK companies operating in the Arctic to engage through the Arctic Economic Council in order to safeguard economic activity in the region.
(c) Maintain and impose regulations and provisions against growing concerns of possible environmental and wildlife impacts. Care should be taken in the role the government plays in promoting Arctic economic growth should be strengthened to act against malpractice and damaging effects to ensure the protection and conservation of the Arctic.
(d) The Government should be prepared to take advantage of opening trade route opportunities in the inevitable melting of greater arctic sea-ice to speed up transportation of exports to markets in Asia. As a result of the developing trade routes such as the proposed Chinese ‘Polar Silk Road’ —
(i) It is also important we lead as an advocate to an approach that minimises negative impacts on the Arctic environment while maximising the economic benefit for communities, which will also suffer the most disruption.
This Motion was submitted by u/WateryHobnob, Lord Inverness, Spokesperson for International Development and u/SpecificDear901 OBE MP on behalf of The Conservative & Unionist Party, and Sponsored by His Majesty’s 32nd Government and the Labour Party.
Opening Speech:
Mr Speaker,
I am proud to lay before this house what understandably is quite a weighty motion - the bulk of it being its research - which several days were spent writing up and taking in policy ideas on how the United Kingdom should navigate a developmental strategy regarding the Arctic. In an effort to be constructive and open, I was proud to reach out to thr major parties in parliament for a collegiate effort on feedback and ideas but time pressures took hold to be fully gotten back to, nonetheless I hope this house can come to support this motion.
With contributions from my Colleague SpecificDear901 and recommendations of the Labour Party, This cross party effort Motion recognises the impact following ever growing concerns and opportunities posed in the Arctic as factors such as climate change drive a need for clear long term policy. Therefore we suggest the UK should seek membership or atleast observer status of the Arctic Council, a body of vested nations committed to shared goals of protecting the arctic and matters relating to it. The reason being our very global presence through overlapping interests and global commitments. This motion outlines various recommendations, ideas and insight on how the UK may aid in promoting, cooperating and developing key policy initiatives and projects in order to protect the natural environment, further scientific research and development, ensure regulatory and sustainable economic growth, respect and uphold indigenous rights, and address global security concerns.
This division ends 24 January 2023 at 10pm GMT.
Vote Aye, No, or Abstain only.
