2023.06.03 22:27 RoachieFL How do you properly preserve spiders and soft-bodied insects? (What solution is best for wet preservation?)

How do you properly preserve spiders and soft-bodied insects? (What solution is best for wet preservation?)
I found a very recently deceased crab spider in excellent condition and put it in a vial filled with isopropyl alcohol and distilled water-- I only had 90% isopropyl alcohol on hand so I added a bit of distilled water as I didn't want to "burn" the specimen (I've heard this is a thing, not sure if that's true). I'm having trouble finding ethyl alcohol anywhere, will 70% isopropyl alcohol be acceptable for preserving spiders and soft-bodied insects, or should I use something different? I don't want to discolor or damage specimens. Any advice or experience is greatly appreciated.

2023.06.03 22:23 Joadzilla Georgia probe of Trump broadens to activities in other states

https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2023/06/02/trump-georgia-election-investigation-fulton-county/
An Atlanta-area investigation of alleged election interference by President Donald Trump and his allies has broadened to include activities in D.C. and several states, according to two people with knowledge of the probe — a fresh sign that prosecutors may be building a sprawling case under Georgia’s racketeering laws.
Fulton County District Attorney Fani T. Willis (D) launched an investigation more than two years ago to examine efforts by Trump and his allies to overturn his narrow 2020 defeat in Georgia. Along the way, she has signaled publicly that she may use Georgia’s Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) statute to allege that these efforts amounted to a far-reaching criminal scheme.
In recent days, Willis has sought information related to the Trump campaign hiring two firms to find voter fraud across the United States and then burying their findings when they did not find it, allegations that reach beyond Georgia’s borders, said the two individuals, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to talk candidly about the investigation. At least one of the firms has been subpoenaed by Fulton County investigators.
Willis’s investigation is separate from the one at the Justice Department being led by special counsel Jack Smith, but the two probes have covered some of the same ground. Willis has said she plans to make a charging decision this summer, and she has indicated that such an announcement could come in early August. She has faced stiff criticism from Republicans for investigating the former president, and the ever-widening scope suggests just how ambitious her plans may be.
The state’s RICO statute is among the most expansive in the nation, allowing prosecutors to build racketeering cases around violations of both state and federal laws — and even activities in other states. If Willis does allege a multistate racketeering scheme with Trump at its center, the case could test the bounds of the controversial law and make history in the process. The statute calls for penalties of up to 20 years in prison.
“Georgia’s RICO statute is basically two specified criminal acts that have to be part of a pattern of behavior done with the same intent or to achieve a common result or that have distinguishing characteristics,” said John Malcolm, a former Atlanta-based federal prosecutor who is now a constitutional scholar at the conservative Heritage Foundation. “That’s it. It’s very broad. That doesn’t mean it’s appropriate to charge a former president, but that also doesn’t mean she can’t do it or won’t do it.”
Among Willis’s latest areas of scrutiny is the Trump campaign’s expenditure of more than $1 million on two firms to study whether electoral fraud occurred in the 2020 election, the two individuals said. The Post first reported earlier this year that the work was carried out in the final weeks of 2020, and that the campaign never released the findings because the firms, Simpatico Software Systems and Berkeley Research Group, disputed many of Trump’s theories and could not offer any proof that he was the rightful winner of the election.
In recent days, Willis’s office has asked both firms for information — not only about Georgia but about other states as well. Trump contested the 2020 election results in Georgia, Arizona, Michigan, Nevada, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.
Ken Block, the CEO of Simpatico Software Systems, declined to comment on what he has turned over to investigators. A lawyer for the Berkeley Research Group also declined to comment. A spokesman for Willis declined to comment on the investigation. Lawyers for Trump also declined to comment.
It is unclear if Willis will seek indictments of people for alleged actions that occurred outside Georgia, such as those who participated in the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol. RICO experts say it’s unlikely she will do so. But, these experts said, the law allows Willis to build a sweeping narrative of an alleged pattern of behavior to overturn the 2020 election, with Georgia as just one piece. Evidence and actions outside the state, such as Trump’s statements from Washington that inspired some of the rioters and the parallel efforts to overturn other states’ results, could be presented as additional evidence that helps establish that pattern.
“The Georgia statute is broadly written” to allow the inclusion of violations of federal law as well as some other states’ laws, said Morgan Cloud, a law professor at Emory University in Atlanta and expert on the state’s RICO law. “For example, acts to obstruct justice committed in Arizona might be relevant if the goal of the enterprise, of the racketeering activity, was to overturn the 2020 presidential election nationally, as well as in Georgia.”
Cloud added that prosecutors in Georgia must prove only that two racketeering crimes occurred under the state RICO statute, but that other facts could be used to explain the breadth of an alleged scheme.
An ambitious prosecution
Willis’s investigation has already come under scrutiny as a test of applying state criminal laws to actions that revolved around a federal election — and that in many instances resembled constitutionally protected speech. The probe has prompted a debate, even among those who believe Trump’s efforts were improper, as to whether prosecutors will be able to prove that Georgia crimes were committed.
Her potentially sweeping application of Georgia’s RICO statute could amplify those questions. RICO allows prosecutors to target leaders of alleged criminal enterprises who in previous generations eluded convictions. In Georgia, it can be applied to many patterns of activity that are crimes under state or federal law, such as dogfighting or drug dealing, obstruction or conspiracy — going far beyond its origins as a tool to fight organized crime.
Several legal experts said they expect Willis to home in on possible false statements by Trump and his allies to government officials — one of the crimes that can be prosecuted under Georgia’s RICO statute.
In 2015, Willis attracted national attention as a deputy district attorney by using RICO to prosecute a massive cheating scandal in Atlanta’s public schools that sent eight teachers and administrators to prison.
Prosecutors in Georgia have obtained RICO convictions where the pattern of racketeering activity included actions in other states. In one notable case, prosecutors in Richmond County got convictions for several men they accused of kidnapping a Sam’s Club manager in a robbery scheme in 1998, stuffing him into the trunk of a car, driving to South Carolina and killing him by setting the car on fire.
In the Trump case, Willis has said she is focused on the phone calls Trump made to multiple Georgia officials seeking to reverse his defeat, his campaign’s efforts to persuade the Georgia legislature to declare Trump the winner, the gathering of Trump’s electors to cast electoral college votes for Trump after Joe Biden had been declared the winner in the state, and the Trump campaign’s potential involvement in an unauthorized breach of election equipment in rural Coffee County, Ga.
Dozens of people participated in those efforts, according to reams of emails, texts and deposition transcripts from the House investigation into the Jan. 6 attack: Trump lawyers such as Rudy Giuliani, Jenna Ellis, Sidney Powell, Ray Smith and John Eastman; senior advisers including then-White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows; Jeffrey Clark, then a senior official at the Justice Department; and Georgia GOP leaders including the party chairman, David Shafer, and its then finance chairman, Shawn Still.
Multiple legal experts have said persuading a jury that those actions broke the law could prove difficult. The debate reflects the unprecedented nature of Trump’s attempt to overturn the 2020 election. While the effort immediately prompted calls to hold him and others criminally responsible, identifying laws that apply to such a scenario has proved challenging — and could help explain why Willis’s investigation is in its third year. That dynamic applies both to the Georgia investigation as well as the special counsel’s federal probe.
Most of those scrutinized in the Willis investigation have maintained that they did nothing wrong. They had every right to pursue claims of anomalies, many have said, particularly given how close Biden’s margin of victory was in Georgia, two-tenths of 1 percent.
“There’s not a single thing that I did in pursuit of election integrity that I have any regret or concern about,” Shafer said in a recent GOP address.
“It’s dangerous,” said Malcolm, the Heritage scholar, referring to the investigation in Georgia of contingent electors. “What you’re doing is tainting political activists who are trying to play a part in an election, who are trying to help their candidate, and all of a sudden you’re launching a criminal investigation.”
Norm Eisen, who served as special counsel to the House of Representatives’ first impeachment of Trump, over his pressure campaign with Ukraine, cautioned that it’s too soon to judge the investigation, but said he believes the overall case is a “strong one.”
“Either skepticism or belief is premature because we are not privy to all the evidence that the district attorney has amassed at this point,” said Eisen, a criminal defense attorney and senior fellow at the Brookings Institution. “It just depends on the evidence.”
Eisen was among the authors of a lengthy examination of the applicable law in the Fulton investigation, concluding that possible crimes, besides racketeering, included making false statements and conspiracy to commit election fraud.
Malcolm said he agrees with the report’s conclusion that Trump is at substantial risk of being charged. But he said he believes much of its analysis is “slanted and misguided.”
Trump’s call to Georgia
Willis launched her probe shortly after Trump’s Jan. 2, 2021, phone call to Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger (R), during which Trump said, “I just want to find 11,780 votes.” That number would have given Trump exactly the votes he needed to reverse Biden’s victory.
While Trump has been widely rebuked for that comment and others during the roughly one-hour call, it’s unclear to some legal analysts if uttering those words broke the law.
Trump did not spell out that he wanted Raffensperger to break the law; nor did he directly ask the state official to find the votes, which might have given Willis a clearer path to seek a felony charge against him, such as solicitation to commit election fraud. Instead, the comment could be interpreted as the president simply spelling out the math that would allow him to reverse Biden’s victory.
Trump may have hurt himself, however, in his appearance last month at a town hall broadcast by CNN, during which he explained that he called Raffensperger to tell him, “You owe me votes because the election was rigged.” Willis could offer the statement as evidence of Trump’s intent for Raffensperger to switch votes, several legal experts said.
“Subjects of criminal investigation aren’t usually reckless enough to go on national television and admit their corrupt intent,” Anthony Michael Kreis, a constitutional law professor at Georgia State University, wrote on Twitter after the appearance. “But Donald Trump just handed Fani Willis a new piece of evidence and tied a bow on it.”
Willis has also investigated appearances by Giuliani and other Trump allies before Georgia lawmakers in the days immediately after the 2020 election, during which they described fantastical conspiracies of voting machines swapping Trump votes for Biden votes and poll workers in Atlanta triple-counting suitcases full of ballots.
It’s a felony in Georgia to make a false statement in a government matter, but Willis must prove that Giuliani and the others knew that what they were saying was false. Giuliani was not speaking under oath, so there is no exposure for perjury charges, and some legal experts say he might also be protected under the First Amendment.
Willis may also examine the actions of Clark, then the acting assistant attorney general for the Justice Department’s civil division, who wanted to send a letter to Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp (R) and state legislative leaders falsely claiming that the department was investigating “significant concerns” in the 2020 election, and urging them to call a special session of the General Assembly to appoint Trump’s electors to cast Georgia’s electoral college votes. Senior Justice Department officials blocked Clark from sending the draft.
Whether the Republican electors who convened to cast electoral college votes for Trump on Dec. 14, 2020, broke the law is perhaps even murkier.
Georgia was among seven states where the Trump campaign and local GOP officials arranged for alternate electors to convene with the stated purpose of preserving legal recourse while an election challenge made its way through the courts. Willis has offered some form of immunity to 12 of the 16 electors, according to three individuals with knowledge of the investigation. Not counted among those with immunity are Still, now a Georgia state senator, and Shafer.
Shafer helped organize the meeting and presided over it. Still has been described in news reports as having blocked members of the media from entering the room before the meeting started. Prosecutors have apparently focused on those activities in their questions to various witnesses, according to three other people with knowledge of the interviews. Prosecutors have also inquired about who mailed the electoral certificates to Washington, they said.
One of Shafer’s lawyers, Holly Pierson, wrote in a letter to Willis that Shafer had no knowledge that Trump allies would propose, later in December, to use the alternate elector certificates to block the counting of electoral votes for Biden in the Jan. 6 joint session of Congress. It is not even clear if the plan to thwart the joint session had been hatched by Dec. 14, 2020, the day the electors met. The House committee did not refer Shafer or Still to the Justice Department for federal prosecution. Pierson declined to comment.
As the nation waits to see what, if any, charges Willis will seek, one key question is what evidence she has gathered that Trump, his campaign or allies knew about all the different efforts to reverse Biden’s victory. And that’s just the first step — getting to trial and persuading a jury may present even more formidable challenges.
“Proving all this beyond a reasonable doubt,” Kreis said, “that’s going to be the hard part.”

2023.06.03 22:14 No-Caterpillar-8052 How to store long term?

I started keeping old flavors about a year ago, starting with the bajas. I figured I'd crack a can of an old discontinued dew open every special occasion or so and that's what Ive done for birthdays and whatnot.
I live in a dry area. I stored them in a plastic container in my garage (not super temp stable, but doesn't go less than 20 or above 90 f all year). Well I found that moisture was somehow collecting in the box, causing very little mold on the boxes (I had the twelve packs in the boxes still). So I threw away the boxes and would air the container out every few weeks and this wasn't a problem. The mold was super light and only on the boxes.
Until recently, I don't know what happened, but it looked like a can leaked or something. All of my cans are stored upright and none of them show any signs of leaks. Some of the cans are half empty even though the can is in perfect condition. The leak didn't cause a ton of mold, but a sticky mess. And it looks like multiple cans leaked. Did it evaporate through the lid or something ?
How should I store my cans moving forward? I want to have enough bajas so that, for instance, four years down the road I can line them all up and try them all with my buddies.
(I know I'm a nerd. )

2023.06.03 22:01 umfan425 New AC unit struggling to lower temp

I recently replaced my 20 year old system with a new AMERICAN STANDARD - 16 SEER - 2.5 Ton - Air Conditioner (new furnace as well). The unit is for the 2nd and 3rd floors of the house. Today was the first warm weather (~80 outside) where we’ve had to run it regularly and it seems to be cooling worse than our old system. Took over 90 mins to drop the internal temp from 73 to 72. I also noticed some draftiness above the new furnace/blower where it connects with the old ducting.
Two questions: 1) is this a potential problem? I expected the new system to cool more quickly 2) could the poor cooling and drafts be related?
Thanks!

2023.06.03 21:58 Efficient_Half3241 [17M] Yellow liquid and red face

17M 185 cm 70kg
This morning I woke up with yellow liquid on my nose and on my cheeks and my face hurts. Yesterday for the first time of the year I went to the beach and was there all day but I forgot my SPF. The weather was approximately 90 F or 30 C and the UV index 5-6. My body was red yesterday but now day later it's forming in to a tan color which I usually get in the summer but my face is more red than yesterday and has been releasing yellow liquid. My face also for some reason is puffier and I feel weird , like tired and sleepy. My face nose and cheeks hurt when I touch it.
PICTURE https://imgur.com/qZzHSnK
Additional information ( I don't know if it's relevant) : I am someone who suffers from acne and I have a routine I use everyday and for first time I skipped it yesterday due to this burn. I use a Trifarotene cream ( Retinoid ) along with BHA from Paulas Choice.
Should I be worried ? Never happened in my life this thing.

2023.06.03 21:45 peaceloveelina How to Address Excessive Laundry Use?

Title pretty much says it, but here’s the deal. I had to purchase a new W/D because the bearings on the old one gave out and it wasn’t worth the cost of fixing. However, the new units are smart and track their usage.
My washer has 53 cycles in 30 days, of about 10 that were mine. There are 112 cycles in 90 days, but I’ve only been home for 30 of the 90 days, so the same 10 loads already mentioned. That’s over 100 loads of laundry by my roommate! No wonder the old washer gave up. It was exhausted! She does not have company often, she does not have a romantic partner, she doesn’t do any of the household laundry often (like cleaning rags, curtains, etc.).
How can I address this delicately and from a place of kindness? We’ve both had really hard years emotionally and mentally, but this is really upsetting me. I paid for the machines and they were expensive, so I just want them to last because money is so tight right now.
My roommate is also my friend, but she was taught almost nothing about how to be an adult/adult life (purity culture so she was expected to have a man and be married and be “kept” already) so it’s really awkward to bring these things up without making her feel stupid and me feel like a horrid person.
ETA: Roommate does not have any kinds of physical medical conditions that involve excess sweating/smell and does not work a job where a uniform is required.

2023.06.03 21:31 Ornery_List9248 what do I do with my spinach

so just planted a big garden. A lot of stuff was originally from seed but had a lot of space so went to a farm and got some starts. I bought spinach starts because I thought ooo yum spinach. Put them in the ground without thinking too much about it. Quickly learned that spinach is a cold weather plant. Oopsie. It was like 90 all week. Next week will be all rainy and highest 70, but will go up in temp again after.
What do I do with the spinach in the ground? Leaves started to turn yellow. Since they’re starts the leaves are already grown. Should I just pick it and eat it? Is it ever too early to eat?

Age 25
Sex Male
Height 5:10
Weight 75KG
Race White
Hi all,
[25, M] My nose is currently dripping with water, so blocked that I cannot pass the slightest pass air through, and I and constantly sneezing.
The hot spell in the UK has caused me to constantly suffer with hay fever, worse than I have ever had it.
As soon as I stand outside I violently sneeze within a few seconds. I am sitting in my room now but completely blocked up and nose dripping.
I have sneezed probably a few hundred times today and my nose is red raw and in agony.
I have taken fexodenidine my whole life for the worst months in the summer, but I switched off it as I feel I built up an immunity to it, I found it made me very tired and itchy.
I have been taking cretrezine hydrochloride the last 2 weeks but my symptoms are not improving.
Please is there anything someone can suggest to help me, its making my life at work and at home like hell.
I don't know what type of pollen I am allergic too, I am in the South West of England, the weather app says it is High levels of Grass, Tree and Weed pollen.
thank you

2023.06.03 21:10 tobyfromtheeast First time in the Balkans and I loved it! TRIP REPORT

Hi all, I am posting this as a trip report more than anything else so enjoy the read :)
I have recently returned from a 9 days long trip to the Balkans. I let my excitement calm down over the past week or so and I am now ready to share my experience! I will be discussing the budget at the end!

WHERE?
I visited 3 countries: Kosovo, Montenegro and Serbia
WHEN?
8th until the 17th of May
ITINERARY
8th-11th in Pristina, Prizren and Peje in Kosovo
12-15th in Budva, Montenegro
16th-17th in Belgrade, Serbia
The plan was that there was no plan. I knew what is where and what cool things I can do but unfortunately I didn't enjoy good weather as it was raining for 7 out of 9 days. In Kosovo I travelled with two friends from Korea which I will mention later. We had a rental car from Pristina Airport which allowed us to go around the country easily and allowed us to avoid places with worse weather.
As I was not travelling alone for parts of the trip, I was flexible with activities which unfortunately were very limited due to the aforementioned weather conditions. Whenever we could we were out and about.

THE EXPERIENCE
The highlight of the trip for me was definitely Kosovo. Amazing place so different to any country I visited before! Beautiful villages, cities, nature and all of that within reach as the country is small. It makes for a good short trip especially if you have a car, which is very easy to get! Prizren was our favourite city. Good hikes, beautiful views and good food! We also stumbled upon a locally owned liquor store where we bought our first bottle of Rakia, lovely owner!
On the last day we returned our car in the morning and took a bus from the airport to the city centre from where we took a bus all the way to Budva, Montenegro passing through beautiful Albanian mountains on the way south.
I had high expectations for Budva and Montenegro in general. I knew the weather was not going to be great but I tried to make the most out of it. The bus from Kosovo arrived around 1am so I already knew my next day is going to be slow. On the first day I appreciated the beautiful surroundings. That is also the day when my experience started to go south. I got scammed out of 40euros by a taxi driver for a 15 minute ride, why does it always happen in beach destinations? I spent the day swimming in Sveti Stefan, drowning the sorrows of loosing 40 euros. The water wasn't warm but it was the only day of sunshine I had so I had to enjoy it, it was my first time at the Adriatic Sea after all!
I quickly realised that 3 days in Budva are too many especially considering the weather. After my nice swimming/sunbathing day I found myself mostly just strolling around the Old Town(which did surprise me in a good way!). I decided that going to Kotor or anywhere else in the area doesn't make much sense and I will leave it for another trip later this summer. I spent my evenings at the beach next to Old Town, drinking and listening to waves crashing against the walls until late hours of the night every night. That was probably the nicest thing about my stay in Budva, as for a person that doesn't do partying on trips like this, it was a pretty boring and empty tourist town.
Last day in Budva was the bus-catching day. I read a lot about bus services in the Balkans so I was prepared to just let things happen the way they should. And so my ticket was for a 12:30 bus from Budva to Bar. The bus didn't arrive until ~13:00 and I was told by the driver this is not the correct bus despite it being clearly stated on the ticket that it was. Happens, I thought. I asked the ''bus station person'' what to do and they just put me on the next but to Bar at around 13:30, which was completely fine by me.
Why would you go from a tourist town of Budva to a tourist town of Bar some may ask? Well, for the past two years I dreamed about experiencing the Belgrade-Bar railway journey, rumoured to be one of the Great Train Journeys. And so I was finally there, in a random restaurant/bacafe next to a very Soviet-looking Bar Train Station. I bought my ticket for a couchette in a 6-bed compartment for ~24 euros one-way all the way to Beograd Centar. It was 16:00 and my train, Lovcen, didn't leave until 19:00. I spent that time looking for an ATM, eating at a Burger King with a parking lot the size of a country and chilling next to the station, great atmosphere in that area! Very quiet and for someone who hasn't travelled to the east it was very surreal to see palm trees, soviet architecture and Cyrillic all around next to each other. I felt like it was a good time to say bye to Montenegro for now.
The ride was incredible. Yes, if you, like me, can't sleep anywhere outside of your own bed properly you're most likely not going to sleep on this train either. But the sleepless night was worth every minute of the breathtaking scenery of the Montenegrin Mountains as we climbed higher and higher. Having come in May, I only had about ~2 hours of daylight to look out the window and I made sure to not loose a single second of it. If you ever thought about taking the trip, I couldn't recommend it enough. Yes it's not the fastest, most comfortable way to get to Belgrade, but it was an experience I will not forget!
Takeaways from Montenegro:

Next stop was the great city of Beograd. After my ~13hour train journey I arrived at Beograd Centar Station (confusing af!) at around 7:00am. My check-in time was 13:00 so I had a lot of time to kill even though I was already dead. I tried looking for a way to get to city centre because don't be mistaken, Belgrade Central Station is NOT in the centre. During my walk I found an exchange office which didn't scam me so I was off to a good start. With my 6000 dinars I strolled the city looking for food.
Later I saw the pedestrian, ''tourist'' area, the Castle, the riverside and some random streets and local markets. Overall, though I may be biased because of lack of sleep, Belgrade felt a little bit boring. Yes, I saw many people out and about but it felt too quiet. Serbia on the other hand, I will have to visit again as the people and the culture intrigue me!

BUDGET
I got tickets from London Luton to Pristina, Kosovo for around £40 and back from Belgrade Airport to London Luton for £45. I didn't hold back on anything really. I was booking AirBnb's on the day of arrival usually especially in Kosovo.
Flights: £95
Car rental in Kosovo £135(fuel included, cost divided by 3 since I was with friends = £45)
AirBnb ~£90 in Kosovo
Budva accommodation ~£50
Belgrade accommodation ~£35
Train ticket from Bar to Belgrade in a sleeping car - £20
Scam ATM's - £40
Food is a tricky one since I didn't exactly track my expenses but I had a lot of seafood and kebabs on the trip. I would say ~£300 for the 9 days. Keep in minds I never cooked a single meal it's all for eating out.
All in all I spent about ~£600 for the 9 days of exploring which works out to between £65-70 per day. Not bad but I know next time what to do to lower the cost. I am fully aware this trip could have ended up £200 or more cheaper but I am satisfied with what I got.
Thoughts? Tips on next time in the area? I definitely need to go back, especially to Bosnia and Herzegovina and Albania. Hope you had an interesting read!

2023.06.03 21:05 Dizzy-General8771 Instinct

This story is true about what my husband experienced one summer in the mid 90’s while working as a grounds keeper at a camp for kids.
It was the early 90’s and at the time my husband, Eddie (just passed his 19th birthday) hadn’t yet decided whether or not he wanted to go to college. He had recently lost touch with most of his high school friends and as such, didn’t have much planned for the summer. So, when the offer to be a live-in grounds keeper at a children’s day camp came his way, Eddie was happy to take the opportunity. He lived in a rural area of Ontario so the camp, surrounded by trees and having it’s own small lake, was both secluded enough to have peace and quiet, but not so far away that he couldn’t manage a trip home on the off days.
While the seclusion wasn’t geographically extreme, once everyone left on Friday afternoons – all the children gone, the day staff back home to their families – the place was actually really eerie. This was magnified by the fact that at the time, Eddie didn’t have a car, and the only phone was about a 20 minute walk from his tiny cabin at the back of the property along a dark dirt path. This meant that most evenings and weekends were spent next to a camp fire or inside the cabin with the door locked listening to loud music and having a few drinks.
Usually, the property was really quiet and it would actually get boring out there with no one to talk to and nothing to do. Eddie once told me that he would pass time by canoeing around the tiny lake (which was more like a large pond) and catching every turtle he could find. He would place them in the bottom of the canoe( with some water and lily-pads so they were comfortable) then once he caught every one he could find, he would canoe to different parts of the lake and put them back one-by-one. So, obviously, there wasn’t much going on in the area.
It was one quiet night however, where despite how peaceful it seemed, there was definitely something evil happening out in those trees and fields.
The night started like any other. It was a warm Saturday in Ontario which meant that the bugs were biting and you could drown in the humidity. It was getting toward the end of the summer and Eddie had gotten into the weekly routine - cleaning and fixing things around the camp during the week days then wandering around the property on the weekends. This Saturday had started off no different that the others. Eddie had done a quick security sweep of the area in the morning to make sure nothing was amiss, then spent the afternoon paddling around the lake catching turtles. A few hours before sundown, Eddie was back at his cabin and had built a nice campfire. He always made sure to start the fire before dark.
On this Saturday Eddie had spent the evening cooking a meal over the fire and reading his favorite Stephen King novel The Stand. He had listened to the weather forecast on the little cabin radio earlier that morning and was aware there was a chance of some nasty thunderstorms that night. He was keeping a close eye on the wind and the clouds as night rolled in, knowing that even this far north, the heat and humidity was known to give rise to fearsome tornadoes every few years.
Not long after he finished his meal, the sky turned dark and the wind began to pick up. Eddie doused his fire and was starting to pack up his book and his dishes when he heard something moving through the brush. He stopped and listened for a moment. The rustling continued, but figuring it was a racoon or a deer, Eddie went about his business – more concerned with the approaching storm.
Once in the cabin, Eddie locked the door and felt a little more secure. He turned on the single, un-shaded light bulb that hung above the sink. The rickety cabin wasn’t much, it had no bathroom and no stove, just a mini fridge, sink, a hot plate, and musty bed. As rickety as it was, it still had a lock on the door and the only window was too small for a person to fit through without a struggle.
Soon, Eddie was getting settled back in with his book. It wasn’t long before the rustling sound he had heard outside returned, but this time it sounded like something was brushing up again the outside wall of the cabin. Still thinking it was just an animal, Eddie tried to keep his attention on his book. The curtains on the window were closed, so he couldn’t see outside, but he knew it was dark and thought he heard the distant rumbling of thunder. The rustling and brushing sound was right outside his door now. He wasn’t sure, but he thought he had heard the handle jiggle.
Suddenly the rustling turned to a crashing and it sounded like two or three people were running away from the cabin. This startled Eddie causing him to drop his book.
Maybe that wasn’t just a deer after all”. Eddie thought out loud. He stood up and hesitated.
What was he going to do?
Part of his job was to watch out for trespassers and notify them that they had to leave if he found any. Usually this was an easy job. He was only run into this a couple times and both occasion it was a group of local kids taking a nighttime swim in the pond. Usually, he scared them more than they scared him.
Thinking this was probably the case – the local kids having found his cabin and decided to play a bit of a prank on him- Eddie grabbed his keys and his flashlight and headed for the door.
He could hear the wind howling and the rain starting to tap on the roof. Not quite a downpour yet.
He took a deep breath and opened was about to open the door when he heard a gentle tapping on the window. This was obviously not rain.
The hairs on his arms stood at attention. His blood ran cold even in the stuffy and sweltering heat of late July. He was frozen with his hand on the door knob. Not even breathing. Something in his stomach was telling his to remain completely still and whatever he did to NOT OPEN THE DOOR.
After a few minutes, the tapping hadn’t returned. The rain was coming down harder now and Eddie began to breath again. He let go of the door knob and immediately turn off the light. He quietly got under the covers, not even bothering to take off his shoes or put back the large, metal flash light, in case whatever it was that was out there came back. Eventually he fell asleep.
The next morning Eddie awoke and felt no sign of the eerie presence from the night before. He got up and immediately noticed that the storm had passed and the morning sun was shining through the curtains. Groggy and a bit shaken, Eddie splashed some water on his face and began to rummage through the fridge for something to eat.
He was just debating whether he wanted to cook his eggs and bacon over the fire or if the firewood was too damp when there were a loud knock at the door. Eddie jumped and almost soiled his pants. No one had even shown up unannounced way out here on a Saturday.
“Eddie, it’s Jim, your mom’s friend from work. Are you in there?”
Eddie recognized the voice. His mom worked in dispatch for the local police department. Eddie, being a bit of a trouble maker in a small town, knew the members of the force both from family BBQ’s and from his own personal run-ins.
Eddie let out a breath and relaxed a bit, but then it hit him – Why was Jim out here so early on a Saturday?
Thinking something might be wrong at home, Eddie rushed to the door and unlocked it.
“Hey Jim, is everything okay? Why are you out here?”
“Morning Eddie, everything is fine, but your mom sent me to pick you up and bring you home this morning.” Jim looked around the cabin. He was in his uniform and Eddie could make out his cruiser a few yards away. Eddie noticed Jim was subconsciously fingering his weapon.
“I think you’re mistaken Jim. I’m not supposed to be going home until next weekend and Mom said that she was going to come out to pick me up.” Eddie took a step back and watched Jim’s face as he surveyed the tiny cabin.
“I know that was the original plan, Eddie, but we all think it’s best that you get your things and come with me.” Jim stood in the door with the face of a man who was not to be questioned. The hair’s on Eddie’s arms stood up and he had no choice but to agree and begin to pack up his belongings.
As they packed the car, Eddie could have sworn he was a set of shoe prints that made a trail around his cabin.
After driving in silence for a few minutes Jim casually began asking Eddie what he had been up to last night.
“Did you go out at all or just stay by the fire?” Jim asked, his eyes watching Eddie through the rearview mirror.
“I was by the fire, but they went in side when it started to rain. That storm was starting, so I didn’t want to be caught out in it.”
“It must get a bit creepy out there all alone during a storm”, Jim said. That’s when Eddie remembered the tapping at the window and the strange rustling sounds.
“Actually, it’s usually fine, but last night I got a bit of a scare. Just as the storm was starting, I think an animal or something was walking around my site. Probably a coyote or a fox that smelled my supper.” Eddie’s eyes locked with Jim’s.
“Did you see anything?” Jim asked.
“No. At first I thought it was some of the local kids that I had kicked out of the lake a couple weeks ago. Thought maybe they were playing a bit of a prank on me in return, but the rain was starting to pick up, so I decided to stay in the cabin and pretend I didn’t notice.” Not wanted to sound like a wimp in front of one of his mom’s coworkers in the force, Eddie lied about the chills he had experienced.
“That’s probably for the better.” Jim said. “They usually go away if you ignore them”.
The rest of the ride was silent. Eddie drifted to sleep for a little while and when he awoke they were pulling into the driveway of his parents house. His mom was standing on the front steps when they got there.
“Eddie!” His mom called as he was getting out of the car. “Come inside, I have coffee and breakfast ready”.
“Thanks mom, just let me get my things from the trunk.”
“Just leave them for now. Jim is going to join us for breakfast. You can get your things after we talk.” His mom turned and disappeared into the house. A little confused, but hungry from having missed his morning meal, Eddie shrugged and walked toward the house. Jim locked the car and followed close behind.
Eddie sat at the kitchen table and was greeted with a plate of hot pancakes with bacon and a fresh cup of coffee. Eddie began to eat but noticed that Jim and his mom were only drinking coffee.
After a couple minutes of pleasantries Eddie was starting to get annoyed.
“Why did you pick me up early mom? And if you’re home, why did you send Jim out to get me? Mom, what’s going on!?”.
“Eddie,” his mother said his nice calmly yet firmly in the way only a mother can, as she rested her hand on this arm. He stopped and looked at her. What she said next still gives my husband a pit in his stomach to this day.
“Three people were found dead within a mile of that camp early this morning, just as the storm was clearing.” The words sounded distant in Eddie’s ears.
“What do you mean? Like a car accident?” Eddie was confused but starting to get nervous.
“A man was found dead at the bottom of a radio tower a half mile up to road. We don’t know how he got in there, but it looks like he tried to climb it and fell off.”
Eddie’s eyes widened.
“About a half a mile in the other direction, a young man and woman, about your age Eddie, were found dead. The woman was in the house and the man was found in the back yard. They were both stabbed to death. We found no evidence of a break in.” Jim told this part of the story. He watched Eddie to gauge his reaction.
Suddenly Eddie’s pancakes didn’t taste to good any more and he felt a knot build in his stomach.
“So, you came to get me because you were afraid I might be dead too.” Eddie said this slowly and looked at both his mother and officer Jim.
“Did you hear or see anything strange last night, Eddie?” His mother tightened to grip on his arm and looked into his eyes. He glanced at officer Jim who gave an emotionless stare back.
“Yeah. I was telling Jim that I heard what I thought was an animal rummaging around by the fire after I went to bed. It didn’t go away and I thought it might be some of the local kids. I was going to check it out, but the rain was heavy and I thought they would go away if I stayed inside and ignored them.”
“Thank god you did.” Eddie’s mom hugged him and tried her best to hold back tears. Eddie hugged his mom back. His breath shallow from the shock.
Had he almost been one of the victims of this murder? Had the murderer tried to hide out at the camp after brutally slaying the young couple up the road? If Eddie hadn’t gone inside when he did, would he have been murdered while he sat by his fire?
Eddie’s thought were spinning so fast that he didn’t even notice Jim get up and leave. It was a half hour later when his mother calmed down enough for Eddie to realize that Jim had driven off with his things.
“Mom, you need to call Jim, my things are in his car!”
“I’ll call the station and let them know”. Eddie’s mom didn’t seem surprised that Jim had left without saying goodbye. She just went to the phone and called the station.
“Hi Gale, it’s Penny. Eddie was wondering when Jim will be back with his bags.” At the time, Eddie didn’t notice that his mother hadn’t had to explain the situation to her coworkers in dispatch. Wouldn’t they be wondering why Jim had Eddie’s bags in the car?
Jim eventually came back on his way home after his shift. He dropped Eddie’s stuff off, gave him a squeeze on the shoulder, and said “take care of yourself, kid. It was smart of you not to open that door last night.”
It wasn’t until looking back on the incident 5 years later that Eddie realized Jim had come to pick him up for two reasons. Either, after receiving the call about the three deaths, they were all afraid that Eddie, out there alone in the food with no way to call for help, mate the same fate as the poor souls who lost their lives during that storm, OR, Eddie himself had been the one who had stabbed a young man and his wife to death in their own home before murdering a third victim near a radio tower in the field adjacent to the camp.
Eddie isn’t certain, but when he counts the story, he seems to remember when he got his bags back they weren’t packed in the same way he had left them. He is convinced that his mother and the officers thought that we had been the perpetrator of the terrible crimes committed that stormy July night in southwestern Ontario.
They never did end up finding the killer.

2023.06.03 20:56 FitEyes New Preservative Freedom Coalition Launched to Advocate for Preservative-free Eye Care

The Glaucoma Foundation, The Intrepid Eye Society, National Medical Association Ophthalmology Section, and Real World Ophthalmology Unite with Thea to Help Preserve Patient Eye Health
WALTHAM, Mass., May 30, 2023 /PRNewswire/ -- [Thea Pharma Inc.] ("Thea"), the U.S. subsidiary of Europe's leading independent ophthalmic-focused pharmaceutical company, Laboratoires [Théa], today announced the launch of the Preservative Freedom Coalition to raise awareness of unmet needs in ocular surface disease and opportunities to pursue preservative-free topical ophthalmic medications. In addition to Thea, founding members of this company- and brand-agnostic initiative include: [The Glaucoma Foundation], [The Intrepid Eye Society], [National Medical Association Ophthalmology Section], and [Real World Ophthalmology].
Formulations in many prescription and OTC eye drops continue to include preservatives. Prolonged use of these compounds have proven negative effects to the ocular surface and some anatomical structures of the eye, with some of these occurring immediately with acute signs and symptoms, and some progressing slowly over the chronic course of therapy. The Preservative Freedom Coalition will put the topic of preservative-free eye care in focus through education to eye care professionals and patients. This initiative aims to support eye professionals in understanding the benefits of choosing preservative-free options, where possible, to help preserve the health of the ocular surface.
"The eye care industry has a long history of using preservatives in eye drops that persists to this day. The Preservative Freedom Coalition will help spark national dialogue about the need to break through our apathy and indifference, with respect to preservatives, and change habits while continuing to keep our patients' eye care as the highest priority," said Susan Benton, President of Thea Pharma Inc. "The Preservative Freedom Coalition is comprised of stakeholders from across the industry who share a common goal of improving patient outcomes and ensuring access to safe and effective preservative-free treatment options. We believe that working together will enable us to achieve greater success and better overall patient satisfaction. We look forward to working with the Coalition members to make a preservative-free future a reality."
The Preservative Freedom Coalition will focus on three key areas:
  1. Awareness: Jointly educating on the benefits of preservative-free medications, where possible, to healthcare professionals, patients, and the broader healthcare community, with the goal of increasing awareness of the need to protect the ocular surface.
  2. Availability: Collaborating to help ensure that preservative-free medications are widely available to patients by identifying and addressing barriers to distribution and promoting fair and equitable access.
  3. Advocacy: Advocating for policies that support a future that puts preservative-free first, where possible, with the aim of creating a more favorable regulatory and reimbursement environment in the future.
"As medical professionals, we are the caretakers of eye health and have a responsibility to preserve and protect our patient's vision. We must all do our part to prioritize lifelong ocular health," said Aakriti Garg Shukla, MD, Medical Advisory Board Member at The Glaucoma Foundation. "The Preservative Freedom Coalition has the potential to make a significant impact on the education of the entire eye care community and to elevate the awareness of the deleterious effect of preservatives on the ocular surface."
"Our end goal is to improve the lives of patients especially those with a number of chronically treated ocular conditions," said Selina McGee, OD, FAAO, Dipl ABO, President of The Intrepid Eye Society Board of Directors. "We look forward to working with colleagues across the ophthalmologic, optometric, medical, and pharmaceutical communities as part of the Preservative Freedom Coalition to achieve this shared vision."

2023.06.03 20:50 buice Entry level mountain bike (n+1 for a roadie)

Your level of experience with cycling Pretty experienced with road, gravel, and urban cycling. I can probably count on one hand the number of times I've gone mountain biking.
What's your price range, and have you considered second hand? Around $1,000; ideally not above $1,500 (new, not secondhand). I'd think that could get a decent entry level bike, and I was leaning towards this Salsa Rangefinder but am open to other options - especially brands I might not be considering or aware of (i.e. beyond Trek, Specialized, etc.)
What's your intention with the bike - commuting, fitness, touring, sport, etc? Introduction to mountain biking - trail riding and some singletrack. If I end up becoming a fan, I'm trying to avoid getting a bike that is too basic/cheap that I'd want to replace right away (I'm looking for something that will have some longevity).
How far will you be riding, and how often? Trail/singletrack a few times per month - maybe 5-20 miles at a time?
Riding conditions: roads, pavement, trails, single-track, off-road? Flat or hilly? Traffic and weather. Primarily gravel/dirt trails with minor hills, singletrack, some stream crossings, some pavement.
Your location (even approximate) can help other locals familiar with your conditions, too Virginia, USA

2023.06.03 20:49 ItzAlphaWolf [Discussion] Furry Worries - Week 328

Hey furries, u/The-Woop hasn't made one of these in a little bit. I've always liked these posts so I thought that I'd help him out again by taking over until he gets back. I hope everyone stays safe and has an amzing Pride Month!!
Users have sometimes stated that it is difficult to express their sorrows or misfortunes on this sub because they do not want to feel burdensome or unwelcome in what is normally a very happy-go-lucky environment. And so, this thread is to encourage furs to open up with their issues, not only on here but on the sub as a whole. If grief has been on your mind or something has been bothering you as of late, big or small, please leave a comment for myself and others to see if we can be of any help, or at least lend a sympathetic ear.
Alternatively, if you feel pretty nice about yourself today, don't be afraid to browse any existing comments and see if you can make somebody's day a little better. Maybe you have experience with what that person might be dealing with. Or perhaps you just want to let them know that they have a person to talk to. However, there are the principles that should be considered:
1:If you are responding to a comment do your best to be as thorough and insightful as possible. Do not just comment and forget about the other person afterward. While little pick-me-ups can help, do your best to be there for the other person. Encourage discussion and do not be afraid to have more in depth conversations. The comment section is always fine, but if either of you feel that you must talk in a more private setting, do not be afraid to use something such as PM, or a different instant messaging service.
2: I am aware that unfortunately, misfortune does not have a curfew. This thread is not in any way meant to contain negative emotion on the sub, but is meant to be a convenient place for others to open up and find somebody to talk to. If you experience strife at any other time during the week, do not feel like you must wait until Saturday to state it. Please feel free to make your own post.
3:This thread is not meant to replace professional help. If you feel that you could have depression or any other similar psychological condition, you are still invited to post, but it is highly recommended that you seek a form of professional help as well as look into the resources below.
4: Suffering is not a competition. Do not feel like your issues are too slight, or insignificant to post. You are invited to express your problems no matter their scale. Your sadness is just as valid as any others.
5:If you are not looking for advice and would just like to receive emotional support or simply get something off of your chest, you are more than welcome to state so. After all, a shoulder to lean can be a great remedy.
Last but certainly not least, here are a list of resources that anyone can contact. Please do not hesitate to use them if you feel the need. It is better to call and it not be worth it, than to not call and forgo the help you deserve.

And as always, if anyone has any ideas on how this thread could be improved upon or if the concept is in any way flawed, please do not hesitate to send u/The-Woop a PM.
