Hey
miguns, your friendly neighborhood FFL here. I've got some unexpected expenses that have come up and I don't have the money to cover them. I also have some guns that have been laying around for longer than I wanted, so I'm launching a spring cleaning sale. Everything in my inventory, with the exception of consignments, is going up for sale for exactly what it cost me (rounded up to an even number to make cash easier). Not looking for sympathy, this can be a win-win. You get a great deal, I get liquidity. Some of these are also listed on my online store albeit at higher prices, if you prefer paying via credit card.
Link to sale page For those of you not familiar, I am a home-based FFL in Saint Clair Shores. I work by appointment so just use the contact info on my website to give me a shout if you're interested in any of these.

My eyes glancing over to the corner of my pad, reading the time.
Damn.. Itâs already the next paw? I moved my hands up to my eyes, trying to wipe away the grogginess that had seeped into me. Giving my face a few baps my gaze settled for combing the net once more. It had been hours since I sent my reply to Miles, but he hasnât responded yet..
Maybe he backed out?.. Could humans do that? Does their side let them back out? I let the thought mull itself over in my head for a while. A small sense of relief bubbled up inside of me. My mind considering the fact he may have just terminated contact, but I did my best to end such subconscious feelings.
He wouldnât do that, his first message sounded like he was excited. Itâs probably just his rest claw, thatâs all. As I returned my focus to a video I had accidentally clicked on, I felt the familiar feeling of my pad vibrating. A drop-down bar alerting me to a notification from the exchange app filled the top half of the padâs screen. Immediately, my claws worked to press the notification, the pad silencing the video and displaying my chat with Miles. My eyes scanned his new message with a zeal that managed to surprise me.
âKilet! Iâm so glad you accepted my contact, you work as an aeronautics mechanic? That sounds kinda similar to what I do actually! Iâm an engineer stationed on a UN ship orbiting Earth. You asked about the military, right? Well, itâs got its ups and downs. Lots of kids half your age sitting in officer spots thinking they know better, while us NCOs clean up their messes! Then you got the privates that manage to fuck up something as simple as right time, right place, right uniform!â
Most of what he said made sense, officers, they were the leaders, a lot like us, We have General Kam, I assume heâd be an officer in the human military. Though, the fact he said they were so young seems a bit counter productive, why trust the inexperienced to lead? Then he typed up something about an NCO? What in the Stars does that mean? My dexterous claws began to type a reply.
âNo problem, this is all kinda much for me too! I bet we do pretty similar things, though engineers do more of the planning on our side, they donât like to get their paws dirty. I had a couple questions, if you wouldnât mind. So.. What is an NCO? The Venscript your words came back as just has it as three characters. Also why would your military trust the inexperienced to lead?â Hitting send I only had to wait a moment before a reply came.
âAh, shit, my bad, the military has so many acronyms for things. Even our own kind doesnât know them all. Basically, an NCO is a Non-Commissioned Officer, They are technically enlisted, while an officer is commissioned. Officers give orders, decide on a plan, and take charge. An NCO, depending on rank is the one to put that plan into action, works the kinks out, gets the lower enlisted to do their job. Also, we donât trust the inexperienced. On the platoon level, you have your platoon leader, whoâs either a fresh-faced second lieutenant, or a slightly more experienced first lieutenant. Heâs paired with either a senior staff sergeant, or sergeant first class. The NCO at that level has been in the military for a decent chunk of their life, so the new officer relies on the advice of their NCO counterpart to lead the platoon. Usually you got three platoons in a company, which is all overseen by a Captain, his NCO counterpart is a First Sergeant. Above a company, you have a Lieutenant Colonel and Sergeant Major who oversee a battalion, by now both NCO and Officer have more than enough experience to be considered damn good soldiers. Above them you have your Colonel and Command Sergeant Major, they are usually in charge of a Brigade. Then itâs usually a Brigadier General and Command Sergeant Major for Division and above them is a Core, which is led by no less than a Major General (two stars) and no higher than a General (four stars) and a highly experienced Command Sergeant Major. I know thatâs probably a lot, but thatâs just the US military structure, there are I donât even know how many other militaries on Earth. Sorry for the overload haha.â
My eyes scanned through his message as the rank structure of the predator military wormed its way into my head.
Should he really be telling me this? I'm a random Venlil heâs never met! What if I wanted to use it against them? Does he really not see the harm in telling an alien species how their ENTIRE military works!? Still, his lengthy explanation made sense, it was basically like any other corporation, just with extra steps.
âWell.. That certainly is a lot, but it sounds pretty detailed. You said you were an NCO, right? Speh, I hope the Venscript doesnât butcher your acronyms, what rank are you?â A tinge of curiosity washed over me as my mind drifted to thoughts of talking to some major player in the predator army, though I quickly reigned those thoughts in. He said he worked on a ship, not that he commanded one.
âI'm a Sergeant, we call it E-5. The âEâ part means âEnlistedâ and the â5â part stands for the rank of Sergeant. I donât make too many big calls haha, but I got a team of three soldiers under me. Pretty much I just get told by our lieutenant what parts of the ship are due for maintenance and then tell my three guys what to fix and when itâs got to be done. Nothing too glamorous, but tell me a little about you, I canât sit here and talk about myself all day!â
Another unfamiliar word, âdayâ Looking it up on the net I managed to find that itâs the Terran expression for when their part of the planet is hit by sunlight.
So Earth isnât tidal locked like Venlil Prime? I should have figured that, not many planets are. My head thought about things I could describe about myself, not a lot was coming to mindâŠ
âUh.. Well, I like music, but any sentient does really, so I guess that doesnât help. Venlil music is pretty calming, or thereâs a lot of emotion in it, some songs are sad, some are happy, it just depends on what the artist wants to convey. Besides that, I enjoy the occasional drink or two, but my job is pretty demanding, so I donât get out very often.â
Thatâs seriously the best you can do Kilet? Youâre talking to someone who just recently learned about other life, and this is all you got? âMusic is definitely needed on the ship, weâre stuck up here in a metal box for what feels like eternity, just chilling out definitely soothes the mind for a bit. Human music is pretty similar actually, but I've read we have quite a few more genres than most other species! Maybe I can show you a bit sometime. Though, I can relate to the workload, we work some pretty insane âclawsâ as you guys would say, but when we get some shore leave, or a weekend on the ship thereâs plenty to do. Video games, movies, a few restaurants, or just our own stupidity to keep us company.â
My mind drew a bit of a blank, of course I knew what movies, and restaurants were, but what did he mean by âtheir own stupidity?â Did he also mean that Terrans regularly engage in simulations to pass the time?
This must be how they got so good at hunting! âSo.. I know what a few of those things are, but what are âVideo Games?â I donât think I've heard the expression before, but I imagine we venlil have something similar.â Milesâ reply came shortly after my own message.
At least I wasnât boring him away from me. âWell, itâs basically like.. A virtual game that you play to pass the time. Most Terran games are pretty violent, but thatâs more our drive for competition! We always want to improve our own skills, I personally enjoy a nice cathartic session of Farming Simulator 2135. Life gets pretty hectic over here, so spending some downtime tilling the virtual fields lets me forget the stressors of the day.â
Heâs saying he likes virtual farming? I canât say that I liked the idea of farming myself, but itâs better than being addicted to one of the more âviolent gamesâ they have available to them.. __________________

I had just finished my reply to my new fuzzy friend when a loud
crash echoed down the hallway. Setting my phone down on my bunk, I made my way down to investigate. The sight that greeted me was none other than my three joes lying on the floor with mop handles and tipped over mop buckets. âWhat in the name of fuck are you three idiots doing!?â In truth, I wasnât pissed off, it was kinda funny actually, but I knew a camera was lurking somewhere down this hall, and didnât feel like getting an ass-chewing tonight. Private Murrey was the first to stand up and address me.
âSarnt.. We uh, Morrales and I-â
I cut the boy off, raising my voice as I stepped inches from his face. âI canât
FUCKING hear you, Private! Your mouth is moving, but all I hear is SHIT!!â Murray, Morrales and Peters snapped as straight as a board, placing their hands behind the small of their backs and feet shoulder width apart. âHooooooooooly sheep shit, Privates! Itâs like God himself came down and touched my ears, THANK YOU!! Now, continue!â This time, it was Peters that spoke.
âWe were jousting with the mop buckets, Sarnt.â He answered with as straight a face as he could, hardly flinching while at parade rest.
I pinched the bridge of my nose and looked upwards towards the low ceiling. âFucking idiots, Listen, Dumbasses, we donât get a lot of time off, but for putting your retarded asses on the hot seat, guess what? I want this entire fucking hallway swept and mopped. Time. Fucking. Now, Privates!â The trio scrambled away and slowly jogged down the hallway carrying the mops and buckets, raising my voice. I shouted at them as they fled, âHURRY UP, WAITING ON YOU, ASSHOLES!â watching as their light jog increased to a brisk one. Turning away, I headed back for my bunk.
Idiots, they havenât memorized where the cameras are by now? Sitting down on my bunk, I used my thumbprint to get past the lockscreen, checking to see if Kilet left any messages.
âI can imagine, whatâs it like being cramped on a ship for cycles on end?â
âMiles?â
âYou there?â
I let out a tired sigh and began to type a response since Kilet was still shown as âonline.â âSorry, sorry, you know how I mentioned we have our own stupidity to keep us company? Well, let's just say my boys got a little
too stupid for their own good, now they get to clean the hallway.â
âOh.. sounds kinda stressful, What were they doing to get such a âreward?ââ
A lighthearted chuckle escaped from me as the notion of sweeping and mopping being a ârewardâ in a sense it kind of was, I could have smoked the dogpiss out of them. âWell, they decided to use our mop buckets as vehicles, on camera, I'm sure the Commander wouldnât like to see something like that go âunrewardedâ as youâd say.â
âSounds like you guys have a lot of rules, though I think I can understand not wanting your soldiers to be wheeling around a military ship in mop buckets, I bet I could fit in one of those pretty easily!â
The thought of pushing Kilet around in a mop bucket through the corridors of the ship gave me quite the mental image, for some reason, I imagined him wearing a pirateâs hat standing triumphantly one foot propped against the lip of the bucket.
Land-Ho, Human! Bring the ship port-side to the sandbar! Weâve treasure to bury! Shaking my head a few times to drive the image from my head I typed up a reply. âThat just gave me the best idea, but hear me out, youâll need a hat, and I'll need to convince the specialist at security to have the cameras experience a mysterious blackout.â

I spent the next three paws falling into a rhythm, waking up, checking my pad for messages, giving a quick reply, going to work, and spending the rest of the paw chatting with Miles. At first I didnât quite know what to say, or how to talk, but eventually the words just came naturally from me. Every paw I came home looking forward to telling Miles all about work, how Vemlix screamed at another mechanic, or how Logistics ordered the wrong part for some thrusters. I tried to ask Miles about the U.S.S Patriot, but he insisted he couldnât tell me much, mostly because most of the specs were âclassified.â I guess the UN actually protects most of their secrets well. Instead, I told him all about the transport shuttles, how I diagnose things, and how I fix them. It became obvious to me heâs a really good listener, even letting me ramble on and on about how stressful the claws used to be prior to the borders being shut down.
Arriving home after another late claw of work, I plopped down onto the couch and opened my pad as per my routine. Pulling up the exchange app, I let my claws work over the Venscript keys, typing up my usual messages to Miles.
âHey, You, what are ya up to? No LTs giving you the runaround like yesterday, I hope?â Hitting send I began to wag my tail in the air, patiently watching the chatboxâs animation indicating he was typing a reply.
âHah, I wish, Lt. White forgot to include fluid checks on the preventative maintenance due today, when I tried to correct him he got all pissy, and insisted it wasnât until next week, I had to pull out the calendar and show his West Point ass just how wrong he was, but hey, I got some exciting news!â
Leaning closer to the pad, my thoughts began to fill with useless jargon as to what Miles could mean.
Exciting news? Did he get a promotion? Did one of his âjoesâ manage to fix something all on their own!? âOoooh, what happened? Donât keep secrets, go on, tell, tell!â
âWell the UN is taking us off the Earth defense rotation, some other unlucky sops get to take our spot! Instead weâre being docked in orbit just above Venlil Prime. Thatâs not even the best part! The crew is due for some shore leave. Iâll get to come planet side for a little bit and meet you in person! Ainât that gonna be great?â
My initial reaction wasnât quite what I hoped itâd be, a primal fear got stuck in my throat as shivers crawled up my tail and spine.
Iâve never actually spoken to a human face to face. Messages were one thing, but even that took some time getting used to. I tried to list off how many humans I've even seen in person, but that quickly became harder and harder to remember.
I've seen a few around in the Capital, but I've never actually approached any and only from far away. Am I ready to meet one? Am I ready to talk to one? My thoughts raced out of my own control for several âsecondsâ as the humans would say. Shaking my head, I quickly reigned them back in.
Miles wouldnât hurt me, heâs listened to whatever Iâve said, as boring or menial as it was, heâs asked me more about myself than most Venlil I know! He just looks different.. Thatâs all, Kilet.. Suppressing my initial fear at the thought, I tried to keep as much primal terror out of my next message.
âWow! Thatâs amazing news, Miles! Youâll love Venlil Prime. The Capital is a gorgeous city, Iâll show you around the sights and maybe a little of the country, though a few of the Venlil might not be so kind out there. A lot of us are still scared of humans, but I'm sure that will all pass with a little time.â
Where will he sleep though? Thereâs no guarantee a Venlil would give a hotel or room to a human.. It could sour his whole perspective. Or worse.. Upset him. Still, the idea of hosting a predator I just met in my house wasnât exactly the most appealing thought. Besides, I doubt the owner of my complex would appreciate getting complaints from the other tenants. Without giving Miles a chance to reply, I began typing another message.
âDo you have a place to stay over here? The military wouldnât just dump you planet side and say âfigure it outâ would they?â
âUsually, yes, thatâs exactly what theyâd do, but weâre not on Earth, plus the diplomatic incidents that could occur from us just wandering about the civilian side are endless in the eyes of the big-wigs. As far as I'm tracking, they are gonna put us up at a building near the government complex. The locals near there are the most exposed civilians to human presence.â
Relief flooded my brain as soon as the thought of hosting him was expelled. As nice as this was going, sleeping, fully exposed to a known predator, was just a little out of my comfort zone..
âWell, thatâs good, though itâs kinda disheartening to hear how theyâd treat you if you were getting shore leave on your home world, what if some of you donât have the means or ability to get a place to stay off the ship?â
âMost of us would just return to the ship every night and go out during the day. Typically, we have a recall time regardless, like âYou can go no further than two hours away from the ship in case of emergency recallâ sort of thing.â
I was about to type up a reply when I saw the familiar three rotating dots next to Milesâ name, erasing my message I decided to wait to see what he wanted to add.
âShit, sorry, Kilet, but I gotta go for a bit. Command meeting with all the engineers about this month's tasking and duty rosters. Commander got pissy cause some lazy sham artist decided he was too good for CQâ
The only thing I managed to understand from all that jargon was âGotta go for a bit,â âCommand Meeting,â and âTaskings.â As for what a âmonth,â âCQ,â or âsham artist,â I have absolutely no idea. Though, if he said he had to go, he probably didnât have the time to explain.
âAlright, Iâll talk to you later, Miles, just message me whenever.â
Without much to do, and Miles seemingly busy, a curious thought popped into my head. Without noticing I found my claws pulling up Rivisâ profile, I clicked the âcallâ button and turned up the padâs volume. After two rings I heard a
âclickâ and the familiar voice of my dark furred friend.
âHello? Call to tell me you backed out on your partner, eh?â
I slapped my tail against the couch cushion out of annoyance, my words laced with a similar amount of sarcasm. âNo, Actually, I called to see how
you and your partner are going. Miles and I are doing great,
thank you very much.â
Rivis let out a soft chuckle that almost sounded like a series of squeaks before speaking. âZoey and I are alright, though the texting app doesnât like half the stuff I bring up. Itâs always âInappropriate topic thisâ or âinappropriate topic that.â Worst part is I know itâs for my sake, but I wish there was some way to turn it off. How can I learn about these humans without seeing all sides of them?â
I didnât exactly mind the restrictions myself, they were there for a reason, to ensure curious Venlil arenât scared off at a moment's notice, but I didnât really have the energy to get into a biological sparring match with Rivis right now. âI hear you, I kind of run out of things to talk about too.â
âWell, thatâs just your own fault. You have an infinitely curious alien that thinks youâre the most adorable thing theyâve ever seen at the tip of your claws, and you canât think of a single thing to talk to them about?â
It took me a âsecondâ to get through Rivisâ reply, a light bloom forming over my snout as I pondered just how ridiculous my previous statement actually was. âFine.. I see your point, but what should I ask?â
âTheir culture? Their history? Personal and general, Their herbivore diets? Their hobbies? Their music? Their science? Their religion? I can keep going.â
âŠYou really are braindead, Kilet. âOkay, okay, I get it. When Miles gets back I can ask about some of that stuff, but I was also curious, do you have any plans to meet Zoey?â This was the question I really wanted the answer to, Rivis put on a brave face for these humans, and I havenât seen him show anything besides curiosity. I couldnât help but wonder if it was all just a front, or short lived bravado.
âOf course, weâre just waiting for a window when either the exchange program offers, or she can visit here on Venlil Prime. Whichever comes first really. How about you?â
âYeah, Miles is coming over for shore leave in a bit. I told him Iâd give him a tour of the city, take him to a few local hotspots. Nothing too fancy, but I'm sure heâll appreciate it.â
âMmmmhm, I'm sure he will too, you really canât be too overbearing on him. With the way the humans know they affect
most Venlil, youâre almost granted immunity, theyâll assume responsibility for any offense. Theyâre dancing around our feelings right now, youâd have to be an idiot not to see that.â
I took a short pause as I really listened to Rivisâ words.. They sounded âwrongâ somehow, off.. âRivis.. Donât you think thatâs a little manipulative?â He had always been a very grounded Venlil, but I just assumed he was more quizzical than most, but to be honest I never had a lot to compare him to.
âMaybe, but it doesnât change the fact thatâs how this first contact is treating it. Zoey told me so many humans applied to the exchange program, but hardly any made it in. Meanwhile our government was practically begging us to sign up. Listen, all Iâm saying is donât feel nervous about what to talk to Miles about, you
canât be wrong, Kilet. I have to finish up cleaning, but let me know how it all goes on your end.â
I heard the
beep of the call end as I sat on my couch, a little stunned by just how easily Rivis described it was to manipulate these predators, maybe that isnât what he meant. The possibility of a Venlil lashing out, acting scared all to get pity and trust from a human felt far more predatory than anything these humans have shown me so far..
âBye, Rivisâ my empty words rang out to no one on the other end of the call as I sat the pad down, a new dilemma surfacing in my mind.
I hope no human meets a venlil like that.. No sentient deserves having their trust turned into a toy. __________________

2023.03.20 18:05 Bubzoluck [15 min read] The Hunt for Red Corona - The Russian Flu of 1890 was likely a COVID 1.0!
| Hello and welcome back to SAR! Much like the groundhog poking its head out of its burrough, the world is starting to wake up from the dark cloud that was COVID-19. Now this isnât to say that COVID is gone, SARS and MERS from earlier in this century prove that the Corona Virus is a fact of our lives, but I do think that the worst is over. BUT before people start to click off this post because I dare to say the C-word, today I want to talk about an epidemic that has fallen to the wayside of history: the 1889-1890 Pandemic. Also called the Asiatic Flu or the Russian Flu this was a respiratory viral pandemic that struck the Russian Empire before being transported globally via newly established railroads and steamships. Despite being the first true global pandemic, we donât really remember this blip of history and the question is: why? Well today we shall explore this forgotten disease and answer the question that wasnât in your mind at all, there is a COVID-OC43? Exit, Pursued by a Bear +2 extra credit points for anyone who knows what this section title references. Before we can talk about the pandemic we have to talk about what was going on in 1890. At this point in time the world was engrossed in what is considered the second Industrial Revolution, also called the Technological Revolution, this period began in 1870 due to the discovery of great synergies. Firstly, the invention of the Blast Furnace by Scottish James Neilson allowed for iron to be heated at higher temps and being tempered with coal in a more efficient manner thus leading to an increased production of Steel. The use and manipulation of Steel cannot be understatedâcheap Steel allowed for building larger bridges and skyscrapers, opened up the agricultural sector by providing more robust steam-driven farm equipment to feed the burgeoning industrial working class, built the next standard for war equipment, and most importantly for our story, laid the foundation of rail and steamship transport. The use of rail cannot be understated either: a railway could turn the week long trip from Scotland highlands to London into a day affair (albeit a long one). This ability to transport people or cargo in a day when it would take upwards of a week at times is what changed the idea of distance and made the world much much smaller. Afterall, nowadays if it takes 6 hours to drive somewhere far away we think what a long trip, while in 1810 a 6 hour trip might have been just to get to the next village over. https://preview.redd.it/om0u7vuucxoa1.png?width=519&format=png&auto=webp&s=8d6cf03ccac167cf2b7b94d6b54db7dce59076dc https://preview.redd.it/io1xc1kwcxoa1.png?width=861&format=png&auto=webp&s=8b0e752717c9c0a6c6b97f6b643c743d63c045c7 - We call this temporal shortening of distance Globalization and the end of the 19th century represented the first hard step in that effort. Looking at the graph we can see that over the 60 years that rail development took off, rail development was the driving force behind Globalization. A quick look at the rail maps of the German Empire in 1840 vs 1880 shows that having a rail line close to your city or port was crucial for the economic (and defense) of the country. RussiaâŠis a different story or rather an even bigger story. Much bigger.
https://preview.redd.it/mng2rqtycxoa1.png?width=610&format=png&auto=webp&s=ae07286544c2d760d7b0f5678b7c62ec57607fdc - If you are unaware the Russian Empire was HUGE; at its peak it covered 22.8 MILLION square miles and is the third largest empire in history (after the British Empire and the Mongol Empire). For much of its history, upwards of 80% of the population of Russia lived west of the Ural Mountains in what is called European Russia. But with that area of Russia being occupied densely for thousands of years, most of the natural resources were extracted from Siberia while farming was extracted from the Chernozem region (modern day Ukraine and Kazakhstan). So in order for food or raw materials to be shipped from the outer edges of the empire into the heartland, it would have to cover upwards of one thousand kilometers. Before rail, this was a 2 week journey and all the while you are racing against the clock so the food doesnât spoil before it gets to the markets in the middle of St. Petersburg.
- Up until the creation of the railroad, like most civilizations, trade was done via rivers and luckily the Volga River runs north-south straight through the middle of European Russia. Despite this centrally located river traversing the upper portions of the river were frozen for 6-7 months per year making it basically useless for transferring cargo. Peter the Great built the Vyshnii Volochek System, an extensive canal system, that linked the newly created St. Petersburg with the old capital of Moscow in 1709. Although the canals improved travel it still took 3 months to travel from Moscow and St. Petersburg. To go from Astrakhan on the Black Sea up to St. Petersburg (traversing the entire length of European Russia) was a notable 2 year trip. One way.
- Well why not roads? Well Russia at the time was known for very wet soils that made roads extremely muddy and dangerous. In fact, the best time to traverse by road was during the winter when the mud was frozen but this added the danger of trying to transport people and animals in the sub-zero temperatures. Alexander I laid the first real roads in 1817 between Moscow and St. Petersburg which was finished in 1834. If weather held, a small cart could make the trip between the two cities in 10 days but the road was small and could only really allow for small non bulky goods to be moved. The true time was closer to 70 days. In response to this Nicholas I founded a committee to study plans for road development in 1833 that would be studied and funded by central, provincial, and local authorities so all roads in Russia were improved slowly but surely. Despite the good intention, the plan failed due to a lack of funds, engineers, and labor.
- Despite the problems with river and road transport, Russian leaders were hesitant to embrace the railroad. Minister of Finance Count Kankrin and Minister of Ways and Communication Count K F Toll believed that money should be spent improving the agricultural sector rather than building these large and expensive machines and rail systems (completely looking over the fact that there was plenty of food it just couldnât be transported quick enough). The first railroad would then be privately sponsored for mining and would instantly prove their usefulness over horse and cart. In just 15 years the cost of the railroad would be paid for. In response to this the Russian Government believed that private industry should take the financial risk rather than embracing the technology.
- On January 6, 1835 Austrian engineer Franz Anton von Gerstner sent a letter to Nicholas I and proposed an extensive Russian railway system. Von Gerstner was probably the most qualified person in Europe due to being the first person to build a railway on continental Europe (Danube-Moldavia line) and he provided statistics about the usefulness of rail. Probably the most important of which was the Englishâs ability to suppress Irish disorder quickly with easy troop movements. The first line to be completed was between Moscow and Tsarskoe Selo in 1836, with a new St. Petersburg-Moscow line in 1851. With great attribution to the Crimean War (1853-1856), the total amount of rail would increase from 5000km in 1860 to over 53,200km in 1899.
https://preview.redd.it/kdwy2w22dxoa1.png?width=1069&format=png&auto=webp&s=717b8794198fe83bdc9ad26d38efe4cdebf267e3 - Probably most important among these railways was the Trans-Siberian Railway started by Tsar Nicholas II in 1891. Starting in Moscow in the West, this railroad would stretch 9,289km (5,772mi) to its terminus at Vladivostok in the East. To put this in perspective,if you were standing in San Francisco and boarded a train, the final destination would be Spain, yeah youâd go over the Atlantic Ocean. Thatâs how long this thing is! Despite being the largest province in the country, Siberia represented the least developed part of the country mostly due to its vastness and inability to traverse laterally. Several rivers flow through the region but are untraversable except for 5 months of the year due to freezing over. Walking the distance could take upwards of a year but once the railway was completed it took a mere 7 days. Thatâs nuts!
Wow you really love trains don't you? Well⊠not really i'm pretty indifferent to them but they are fairly important to the beginning of our story! Close your eyes and imagine it is 1889 in the city of Bukhara in modern day Uzbekistan. Bukhara is an ancient city, probably founded sometime in the 6th century BC, the Bukhara region was a regional capital for the Persian Empire when it reigned in this area. Bukhara remained a servant to the dominant empire of the region for the majority of its history and following the invasion of Russia into Iran in 1804, Bukhara once again shifted hands into the Russian Empire. By May 1889 the city was like any other bustling regional power in the late 19th century: merchants hustled their products to passerbys, children played in the street kicking an air filled sheepâs bladder, and doctors made house calls. One doctor, Oskar Heyfelder, was working one warm May day going from house to house when he encountered a sickly old matron of a large family. She was dyingâa respiratory influenza had taken hold of her and she was quickly fading. The doctor stood over the old woman with his hat in his hand and recommend opium and a priest. There was nothing more he could do. https://preview.redd.it/aclstkn3dxoa1.png?width=1149&format=png&auto=webp&s=47b8a53bbb890270e4b9c2939970e2f980552f68 https://preview.redd.it/w66zplu5dxoa1.png?width=984&format=png&auto=webp&s=fdd52b39081181beb66c30875237ad92368d046c - Little did Heyfelder know but he had just encountered one of the first people to be infected in the 1889 pandemic and the disease would spread quickly viaâyou guessed itârailroad. See back in 1879 a new Trans-Caspian Railway was built along an old Silk Road corridor which would have bypassed Bukhara entirely. That is if it wasnât for the last Emir of Bukhara Muhammad Alim Khan (1880-1944) who was unhappy with the nearest station being dozens of miles away in Kagan so he built a private spur to Bukhara itself. With the rail connection established the disease spread quickly up the railway into Russia and then exported to the rest of the world over weeks. I found a great map from a 1892 book published on the Russian Flu that shows the spread of disease by coloring the map. [In case it's hard to read, go to the link and then page 218 of the pdf].
The Butler Weekly Times, Butler MO, Jan 1 1890 - From the first cases reported in Bukhara, Russian Flu would travel up to Tomks in Western Siberia, Ufa (100 km east of Moscow), Kazan (700 km east of Moscow), Ukraine, and Novgorod (near St. Petersburg) by October of 1889. By November Moscow was hit with 20,000 cases alone which crippled the growing workerâs population and grinded production to a halt. Somewhere between 25-50% of soldiers and students were taken ill which added an extra burden on families. Mid-November saw 180,000 of the one million citizens of St. Petersburg infected. The bread-basket of the Russian Empire was struck next when Kiev and the rest of Ukraine fell to the disease although luckily it hit after the Autumn harvest had already come in.
- Once established in Russian the disease was able to spread out of the motherland to other regions. Via St. Petersburg the infection hopped aboard Baltic ships and was exported to Finland, Sweden, Germany, and Denmark. In Sweden up to 60% of the population would be infected within 2 months of the Flu landing. As a major trading hub, Posen had an extensive rail network that allowed for the Flu to move throughout Germany infecting half of the 1.5 million residents of Berlin. Vienna and Rome got it by early December; Paris by Christmas; Spain in January where up to 300 people died a day in Madrid alone. London, Birmingham, Glasgow, and Dublin took a punch by Christmas as well.
https://preview.redd.it/gffj15k8dxoa1.png?width=472&format=png&auto=webp&s=423d610c77068b027383b10342e93688515d8651 https://preview.redd.it/obweekzddxoa1.png?width=720&format=png&auto=webp&s=bd50c289ba0a997275cefe2cc9c216c9488382ca - Remember that this is the age of small Earth where globalization has made a trip across the Atlantic as short as 7 days. Russian Flu entered Boston and New York City on December 18th, 1889 before being sent West towards Chicago and San Francisco (who would particularly be hit bad). Once in the United States it would spread north to Montreal and south to Mexico and the rest of South America. By February the disease reached East via the Dutch trading companies and spread liberally among the South East Asian population. Japan, Australia, and New Zealand all caught it in April; China in May.
The Deadly Disease Wasnât That Deadly Now if it feels like Iâm leaving something important out, that's because I am. Usually when you talk about pandemics we talk about how quickly it spread and then the death toll. All told, the pandemic killed about 1 million people worldwideânow donât get me wrong this is an enormous loss of life and its unfortunate that these people died but in the grand scheme of things it just wasnât that deadly. During this same period, a global Cholera pandemic was going on which killed at least 4 million people, Russian Typhus Epidemic in 1919 killed 3 million, and in 1918 the Spanish Flu would devastate the globe with somewhere between 17 and 100 million people dead. That being said, some important people did catch the disease: future King Edward VII of England nearly died before his mother, Queen Victoria, left the throne, although many suspect that his catching this disease ultimately led to his death in 1910. His son Prince Albert Victor, the grandson of Queen Victoria and 2nd in line for the throne, caught it in January of 1892 and died at the age of 28 making way for Queen Elizabeth II to eventually be crowned. Augusta, Queen Empress consort to Emperor Wilhelm I of Germany fell ill in 1890 and died within 4 months. Alexander III of Russia managed to just survive the condition which prompted him to make major public health changes in St. Petersburg. I could go on. https://preview.redd.it/vu78khqhdxoa1.png?width=492&format=png&auto=webp&s=47fe4d481731ac455861b65fe4f743447bd42042 - So what even happened then? It would start with typical cold symptoms: sweating, fever and chills, sneezing, watery eyes, and dry cough. But contemporary doctors did identify 4 distinct clinical forms of Russian Flu: a simple fever that would increase over 48 hours and then subside within 3 or 4 days; a gastrointestinal form in which people had severe diarrhea, fevers, and stomach aches (which honestly could have been a co-infection with the raging Cholera epidemic at the time); a rarer catarrhal form (profuse mucus production that would fill the sinuses and lungs and progress to pneumonia); and finally the worst one, a ânervousâ form that caused intense nerve pain in the hands and feet driving people mad. Regardless of which form someone got the worst symptom, and the most common reason why someone would die outside of catching pneumonia (fluid in the lungs) is developing skin lesions. These bullae (large blisters filled with white fluid) were painful, itchy, and formed in the creases of the feet, hands, and extremities which were prone to poppingâonce popped they were open sores ripe for infection. If you didnât manage to die from the skin lesions then kidney failure, digestive inability, or spinal nerve damage that would drive people towards suicide was another common way to die.
- Hereâs the problem with Russian FluâŠit doesnât appear to be a Flu. Nowadays we attribute the word Flu to the Influenza Virus, a small RNA virus from the family Orthomyxoviridae but back in previous centuries the word Influenza meant any disease that affected humans. The word is derived from the Latin influentia meaning âto flow intoâ and it was believed that the stars gave off an intangible fluid that flowed into humans and caused sickness. Eventually this idea would morph into the Humoral Theory of Disease in which there are 4 fluids in the body that need to be balanced else they cause disease. There are 4 types of Influeza Virus: A and C which infect a variety of different animals (human, pig, bird, horse, bat), B which exclusively infects humans (although seals have been seen with Influenza B), and D which exclusively infects pigs and cows. If youâre older than 10 years old, youâve almost certainly been infected with Flu at some pointâalready the 2022-2023 Flu season has 26 million infections in just the US alone.
https://preview.redd.it/8mmzyusjdxoa1.png?width=949&format=png&auto=webp&s=6778fe2b2e5e62223c7b1f1eb3d1229c2e3e7608 - Real quick I want to talk about the names of Influenza Viruses. The Influenza Virus is a sphere shaped particle that has primarily two proteins on its surface: Hemagglutinin (HA or H) and Neuraminidase (NA or N). These proteins are incredibly important for the virulence of the pathogenâthe Hemagglutinin helps the virus bind to the target cell and infect its viral genome into the cell while the Neuraminidase helps burst the cell when the baby viruses are ready to be released. So far 18 HA subtypes (called serotypes) and 11 NA serotypes have been isolated in nature allowing for considerable genetic variation. Thus we classify Influenza A viruses based on what version of the H and N proteins they have: H1N1 caused the Spanish Flu of 1918 (killing 20-100 million people) and the Swine Flu of 2009 (killing about 400,000 people); or H3N2 caused Hong Kong Flu in 1968-9 (1 million dead). Even still there are several combinations that only infect animals, such as H5N1 is Avian Flu and is tracked by many governments to prevent a possible transmission from bird to humans. All Flu A viruses are also classified by a standard nomenclature based on where and when they were first discovered. For example, Swine Flu was referred to as A/Brisbane/59/2007 since it was first discovered in Brisbane in 2007.
https://preview.redd.it/uy3rtr1mdxoa1.png?width=882&format=png&auto=webp&s=7222d596366fa664853e509bce3b8295fd71996c https://preview.redd.it/x77efy5ndxoa1.png?width=426&format=png&auto=webp&s=1cf93c63dee124966aa69f9ade4c70152a21e53b - The thing is, Russian Flu may not be an Influenza like we first thought. Traditionally it is believed that the Russian Flu was caused by H3N8 (which primarily infects horses) or H2N2 (which caused the Asian Flu of 157-8). The problem with this is that Russian Flu does not share many of the common Flu symptoms we have seen in other outbreaksâFlu follows a pretty consistent 2-8 day pattern focusing mostly in the lungs. Severe complications of Flu can lead to more severe respiratory distress, meningitis, or encephalitis but other organ involvement is pretty limited. Russian Flu almost always involved other organs. This idea isnât a contemporary one either, people had suspicions on just what Russian Flu really was.
- Following the discoveries of Louis Pasteur and Robert Koch in the field of microbiology, the race of finding the causative agents for common diseases was on. In 1891, German Richard Pfeiffer isolated an unknown bacteria from the nose swabs of patients infected with Influenza. On January 4th, 1892 he announced he had found it, the cause of Influenza: Haemophilus influenzae. There was a momentous uproar in the scientific community because if we know what causes a disease it indicates that we can treat the disease. The problem is that Pfeiffer could not replicate the infection of H. influenzae showing definitively that it caused Flu. But as more and more people kept finding H. influenzae in patients affected with Flu, the observations were corroborated and later was accepted as factâby 1900 it was believed that the cause of Flu (any lung infection) was due to this bacteria. This fact was firmly cemented in the medical psyche as H. influenzae was found over and over again in Flu victims during the Spanish Flu epidemic of 1918.
A List of Flu Cures Dancing to Flu - But there was some skepticsâone of the big reasons to doubt was that antibiotics at the time did not touch Flu. Now this was before Penicillin but drugs like Salvarsan were the goto agent to kill a multitude of bacteria (you can read more about this arsenic containing âmedicineâ in my post here!) but it couldnât touch the Flu. It wouldnât be until 1931 that the disease Influenza was discovered to be from a virus not a bacteria like once thought. When the development of genome sequencing came about, we were able to sequence Spanish Flu (1918) as H1N1, the same one that caused the Asian Influenza epidemic in 1957 and later Swine Flu in 2009. In 2005 we used samples from graves to âreviveâ the 1918 virus and found that it was incredibly infectious in primates. When Flu was discovered in 1933, scientists back-dated all epidemics that were called Influenza and claimed it was caused by H1N1. There is additional evidence to support this claim though that Flu may have caused Russian Flu. By looking at serotypes in corpses of adults born between 1863 and 1886, they discovered higher antibodies for the H2 subtype. But when they analyzed samples from corpses from 1910, they had the same levels.
The Hunt for Red Corona https://preview.redd.it/c1elb5nfexoa1.png?width=650&format=png&auto=webp&s=4a0d943aa51e7174b028f12da72d697e3d5057db https://preview.redd.it/kpfu7augexoa1.png?width=1032&format=png&auto=webp&s=5b868ef4edae1247edb1def9756e16dabbdab18d - Following the COVID-19 pandemic, researchers started to take another look at the Russian Flu and see if it was infact Flu. COVID-19 does resemble Influenza epidemics due to its similar respiratory symptoms but with other organ involvement, a Coronavirus was implicated more than a Influenza one. There are 7 Coronaviruses that are infectious to humansâ3 caused deadly epidemics SARS-CoV-1 (9% mortality) usually referred to the SARS outbreak in 2002-2004, MERS-CoV (30% mortality) which popped up in 2012, and SAR-CoV-2 (0.6-2%) which we are in right now. The other 4 Coronaviruses are implicated in 15-30% of common colds and have been in the population for decades (probably centuries), HCoV-229E, HCoV-NL63, HCoV-OC43, and HCoV-HKU1. The milder viruses are seasonal and show up every 3-4 years during the normal Flu season of autumn to early spring. In 2005 Belgian researchers found that HCoV-OC43âs genome was very similar to another coronavirus found in cow, BCoV. The DNA sequence of OC43 was almost identical to that of BCoV isolated from corpses from 1890. Does this mean that a coronavirus was the cause of Russian Flu? Well letâs look at the evidence:
- Firstly, we know viruses can jump between species, especially when there is big populations of that species in prolonged contact with the secondâthis is why giant pig or bird farms can be hotbeds for viral transmission. With the development of railways in Russia in the second half of the 19th century, cows started to be transported in mass quantities along the railway. This meant that thousands of cattle were packed into tiny poorly ventilated compartments allowing for easy transmission of disease. From 1870 to 1890, the bacteria Mycoplasma mycoides completely crushed cattle populations due to them being packed in close quarters and herds had to be slaughtered quickly to prevent the spread from going worldwide. What would those workers have been exposed to as they started to slaughter more and more animals? Diseases, specifically cow diseases that could have made the jump. This isnât as far-fetched as it seemsâthe 2002 SARS epidemic became much worse following the slaughter of thousands of civets for human consumption. Likewise it was noted in 1889 that the cows showed the same symptoms as humans. So it's possible that HCoV-OC43 is the virus that mutated from cows into humans. So between the similarity in symptoms between COVID-19 and Russian Flu, the industrialization of the railways allowing for viruses to mutate and then for people to spread it quickly and globally, and the use of genomic science, we now believe that Russian Flu was really Russian COVID. Letâs just be glad that HCoV-OC43 is now a mild cold and doesnât cause painful blisters and horrible nerve pain. Cheers!

2023.03.20 17:31 SmartKrave We did not plan for this (3)
part 1:
We did not plan for this (1) part 2:
We did not plan for this (2) Part 3:
Nox woke up and starting getting dressed. He made sure his uniform was impeccable; today was an important day, he was finally getting his own Drop Unit. After checking his uniform was perfect for the third time, he put on his shoulder pad indicating his clan and left his appartement. When locking the door behind him, his neighbour, Frag, was also leaving his appartement.
Frag was a Karsouf, an alien species the Empire had discovered during their exploration for possible outposts in preparation for the war with the ISSPC. The Karsouf were despite their appearance a very peaceful species. Their scaly skin was covered in sharp thorns and their backs full of very long needles, similar to the remaining descriptions of a hedgehog. When the humans came into contact with them a war almost started but was luckily avoided.
âFinally having that promotion, I see, said Frag.
- Yeah, finally my own Drop Unit. After six months on a ship only coming into contact with one ISSPC ship, I thought it would never happen. Nox replied.
- I can imagine. I still wonder why you wonât let non-human species fight in this conflict.
- You know very well itâs because this conflict only concern humans, they destroyed our home planet, it is for us to fight in this war.
- Yeah, I know itâs just annoying some times.â
While it was true that the Karsouf were a peaceful species, once they had started fighting, they were unstoppable.
Nox nodded at Frag and left the building, the dark black uniform of the Dropper, as they were called, making it seem a shadow was waking in the halls. He started heading in the direction of the barracks. The civilians in the street making way for him and making a nod to him. Droppers were a feared and respected unit of the Empireâs military; they were highly trained individuals in hand-to-hand combat, weapons, explosives and guerrilla warfare. I was said that a single dropper could destroy a military base. They were easily recognised by their uniform: deep black military trousers, a navy-blue shirt and a trench coat with a military pattern of various shades of black. Noxâs shoulder pad complemented well this uniform, the pad was of a black background with a red wolf head on it, the symbol of Clan Aka.
Clan Aka were special among the humans of the Empire; because of the planet on which their colony was settled, they had evolved slightly differently. While most humans of the empire were similar in every way to the humans of old, a few clans had gained special attributes as a result from the planets on which they settled, the Aka clan settled on the planet Volcanilis.
Volcanilis was a very harsh planet to live on, most of the sky was grey from the ash released by the omnipresent volcanos of the planet, volcanos that forced the human colony to live underground in extremely hot vents. This led the humans of the colony to develop eyes capable of seeing in the dark, a capacity to withstand extreme temperatures, a very hard skin and a high tolerance for pain. This made members of the Aka clan desirable soldiers for the Empire; however, the night vision eyes of the clan also made it very hard for them to withstand the brightness needed by other humans, leading some of them to become blind. Nox was lucky, his eyes were considered defective on Volcanilis, it was harder for him to see in the dark but it also allowed him to handle the brightness better. Like most humans he had wanted to join the army since is youth, and because of his origins he was quickly promoted through the ranks.
A week ago, he had received news that he would be promoted and given a very special mission. Today was the day where he would find out what that mission was. He finally arrived at the barracks the guards at the entrance saluted him, they looked at him intensely, humans of the Aka clan were rarer than diamonds, it was the first time they saw one. Nox quickly walked through the halls of the buildings, quickly glancing at the mosaics on the walls. The mosaics depicted various moments of the Empire, its creation, the meeting with various species, inaugurations of monuments and more. He stopped walking when he arrived in front of General Muratâs office. He knocked on the door and entered:
âLieutenant Nox Aka reporting for duty sir.
- At ease Lieutenant, replied the general, I assume you know why you were summoned to my office.
The general stood up and started looking at Nox.
- I do not, sir.
- Please we both know rumours here go around faster than a bottle of vodka in these barracks. Anyway, you are being promoted to Captain, given your own Drop Unit, as well as you own ship crew.â
Nox was stunned, he knew he was getting his own team, but a whole ship crew. Ship crew were generally given to officers with the rank of Colonel or higher.
The general continued: âSince the ISSPC found a way to fight back against our strategy, we have been losing quite a few vessels. The general turned around and started looking out the window, as such we have been trying to find new ways to fight them, so we decided to make a special team, a team that you will lead. Your mission is simple, you and your crew will go behind enemy lines and create as much chaos as possible.â
Nox started thinking, it was a good plan, attacking on two fronts would weaken the ISSPC considerably, and this would simultaneously prevent from reducing the main combat force considerably.
âI assume you wonder why we chose someone as young as you, the general suddenly added while facing Nox, you have been in the army only one year, and have been in only three ship attack total. Well, it is true your clan influenced the decision, he said while pointing at the shoulder pad, the main reasons were that you had a rank that was high enough to give you command and low enough not to cause a major loss in the militaryâs hierarchy, and while only participating in three attacks, you were the one who took the most enemy lives during them.â
The General made a sign to Nox, indicating him to follow, and started walking down the halls. âYou are given a small battle ship, he started explaining, and you crew will be composed of a pilot, an engineer, and your Drop Unit, you will also be given a bit of equipment, but the rest will be for you to obtain, we will not be able to resupply you once you are behind enemy lines.
- Who is part of my Drop Unit sir, Nox asked.
- We have assigned you three people, said the general with a smile. Shock, a member of the Chain Clan, he is trained in explosive and weapon maintenance. Beth, a member of the Stone clan, a specialist in covert missions and an engineer, and finally Jack, a member of the Sparrow clan, a sharpshooter.
- Sir, the team is only composed of people from âspecialâ clans, said Nox.â
The âspecial clansâ Nox was talking about were the clans that varied from the basic human morphology. The Chain clan settled on a planet which was later discovered to contain extremely high quantities of titanium, and that all flora and fauna of the planet also contained high amounts, this led the clan to over time become âmetal menâ, their skin was 50% titanium, making them extremely hard to kill. The Sparrow clan, did not settle on a particularly special planet, outside of the fact that the planet had extremely high mountains, the settlers decided to utilise their advanced gene manipulation technology to give themselves wings for easier movement, this accidently also gave them âeagle eyesâ giving them incredible vision. While the Stone clan were named ironically as they were from a water planet, they developed gills, webbed hands and feet and the ability to handle extreme pressure.
âThat is correct, we choose them because of their capacity to fight in most environments giving you more targets. And they all had problems in their previous units.â
The general opened the door to a hangar, inside was a single cargo ship retrofitted with weapons and technology for deep space travel. Next to it was a table with five people in different uniforms playing what seemed like a heated game of cards. One of the members of the group realised the duo was there, got up and saluted the General and Nox, the others soon followed.
The general then exclaimed âWell men, this is Captain Nox, your new CO. He will be leading you on this mission, and hopefully bring you all back alive, which made the General laugh loudly. We also designed a new uniform for you all.â
The General waved his hand and two aids appeared only boxes, one for each member of the crew. Inside were three sets of the same uniform, the uniform was the same as any Drop Unitâs uniform except for a navy-blue owl holding a sword and shield on the back of the trench coat.
âThe owl is the symbol of your new unit. You have been dubbed âThe Knight Owlsâ. Knight as in âknights of the round tableâ. The general laughed at his pun, now all jokes aside, put on your uniforms and get going.â
The general turned around and left the hangar, the crew looked at Nox.
âCrew, as the general said, go change into the new uniform, get your packs and be ready to leave. You have 5 minutes.â
The crew separated and started preparing themselves. Nox looked at the crew, Shock was as âmetalâ as a member of the Chain clan could be, he had silver hair, silvegrey skin and grey eyes, he had a clearly muscular body and his arms were covered in scars. Beth was slim with light blue skin, her hair was a mix of crystal blue and deep red and Jack was, ironically, the most colourful of the bunch, his wings were covered of colourful feather with crimson red hair and pale white skin. The pilot and engineer were pretty average humans, their shoulder pads did not indicate that they were part of the special clans, but they clearly seemed competent.
He then looked at the ship, it wasnât very big but it was enough to house the crew and store equipment. Nox stopped, he saw something in the cargo area of the ship, it was a TX9009. The TX9009 were a series of battle droids, the humans had created to help with managing cargo and moving boxes, they were designed to be similar to humans in structure, with two arms, two legs, ten fingers, ten toes and an oval shaped head; these were painted a pale grey. Their use was stopped when the ISSPC managed to launch a virus making them attack us.
The members of the crew started boarding the ship, the pilot and the engineer approached Nox and both said in unison while placing their right hands on their left shoulder: âMay the ash stay grey and the lava red.â It was the traditionally greeting of the Aka Clan, Nox replied with âfor as long as we breath and see themâ as per tradition.
âHow do you know of this greeting, Nox asked, few outside of the clan know about it?
- My brother and I were both adopted and raised by members of Clan Aka when our parents died, responded the pilot. We just wanted to present ourselves, I am Steve and this is my brother Josh.
- My pleasure to meet you both.â
The brothers then joined the other Knight Owls who were waiting in line. Nox looked and them and said: âSoldiers of the Human Empire, we have one mission: Create chaos behind enemy lines, are you ready to do that?
- Yes sir, they all said simultaneously with a mischievous smile on their faces.
- Good, we have been given âcarte blancheâ for this, so letâs go have some fun, said Nox with a big smileâ
The crew laughed and started embarking on the ship.
Nox smiled again, this ragtag group was now his crew. They had one clear mission, disrupt the enemy from behind the lines, and all this with complete autonomy. He knew this, where the knight owls would appear, chaos and destruction would soon follow from seeing their reaction.
Once the ship equipped, they left to perform their mission
The ISSPC had not planned for the return of humanity.
And they clearly did not plant for what was about to happen.

2023.03.20 17:05 MjolnirPants Jerry and the Apocalypse: Part 52
Part 51 At sunset on the third day, we set up camp on a tall ridge overlooking the city. As the sun was still low in the sky, I looked out over the glittering ruins. We had appeared right around the center of it, and it was about a day's walk from there to the edges in any direction.
We were west of the city. To the east, the skyline got lower and lower and the buildings further apart until it turned into a rotting, sprawling suburb. To the north, it ended at a large lake whose wooded far shore was visible about thirty miles distant. The water around the docks was speckled with the rusted remains of sunken ships, parts protruding above the surface. At the southern edge, the mess of tall skyscrapers gave way to a band of low, sprawling industrial buildings that wedged up to a cliff face.
Forty miles in diameter, or thereabouts. A forty mile diameter mass of towering skyscrapers, crumbling and rotting away. Glass still occupied many of the windows, glittering like stars as they reflected the setting sun behind us.
The narrowest point was half again as wide as the longest distance through New York City. And that wasn't counting the suburbs or industrial sector. And it was much taller. The tallest building still standing was, according to the marks on my rangefingers, about twenty-five hundred feet tall. And I suspected that it wasn't the tallest building originally. The piles of rubble around the bases of some of the runners-up were significant. And there were a lot of runners-up.
I did some math in my head. Assuming twenty-five percent more population density, owing to the taller buildings, taking into consideration the size of it, there had to be upwards of forty million people living there. A little larger than Tokyo, I thought. Plus another two or three million in the suburbs. Which was impressive, to be sure. What was more impressive was the similarly-sized cities, peeking above the mountains to the south, behind the low, wooded hills on the other side of the lake, and behind us. I hadn't gotten a good look at the city behind us, but it seemed to be about twice the size of this one.
Just within eyesight of the hill I stood on, peering around, I could see the former homes of somewhere around two hundred million people. Half the population of the US. That was the impressive part.
Footsteps behind me announced Avarisa's approach.
"Camp's set," she said. "What are you looking for?"
I shook my head slowly. "Nothing in particular. Just surveying the area. How many people lived here?"
"Um," she said, rubbing her chin. "In this world, I think seventeen billion, just before the war. Kvenland had a total population of six billion. Norumland had eight billion, but it was much larger."
"So most of the population lived in only two nations?" Avarisa nodded. "There were seventy three nations in total, but Kvenland and Norumland dominated this world."
"And they're all dead," I said.
"Not all of them," Avarisa said. "I read about several trips other gods had taken here. There's a few thousands transplants, mostly from Earth, but also survivors of some of the other worlds. They're on the other side of this planet, though. There's another populated region, about seven hundred miles to the south. There's maybe three hundred thousand, scattered over an area of about two hundred and fifty thousand square miles. Then some scattered pockets, a few hundred to a few thousand all over the place. About two or three million."
"That's a lot of dead people," I said. "Dead in a war that wasn't even theirs to fight." Avarisa looked like she might want to object to that, but she didn't say anything.
I heard more footsteps. I glanced back, expecting Kathy, but instead, I saw Spectre approaching. She was in a physical body, not the usual apparition. With a real body, she actually had some color in her cheeks and some life in her eyes. It made her look younger, around Aaina's age.
"Kathy wants to know if you want beef ravioli or chicken and pasta in vodka sauce."
"Ravioli," both Avarisa and I said at the same time. She met my eyes and smiled briefly. The raviolis were the best of the camp foods we'd brought.
Instead of heading back with her answer, she walked up to stand next to us. Her torn, rotted dress fluttered in the breeze, the stained white fabric a stark contrast to the jet black hair that flowed around above it.
"It's about a day's walk from where we came through to any edge of the city," she said. "So Ixy should be around the edge, right?"
"That's assuming he's in this world," Avarisa said. "There's hundreds of portals in the city proper that lead to other worlds, if you have the magic to open them."
"He's got to be in the Sixteenth World," I said.
"Why do you say that?" Avarisa asked.
"Because that's how this works," I said. "We're here on information from Fulla. She gives her secrets out as clues that we have to follow to get the answers we really want. And when you look at her, magically, while she's doing this, you can see that the way she puts her messages together is very similar to the way an oracle's visions congeal. Which means that it's a probabilistic clue with a narrative structure."
"I don't get it," Spectre said.
Avarisa did. She answered for me. "Most of the portals are to the Sixteenth World. And the Sixteenth World is a giant mystery, which is right up Fulla's alley."
I made a so-so gesture. She was right, but for one of the wrong reasons. Magical thinking was so very different from the rational, critical thought I'd spent so much time and effort developing in school, but it was quite useful at times. And though it still felt a little weird to engage in it, I'd learned to turn in on at times. Avarisa was, like Sarisa, a very rational thinker.
"You're right about the number of portals, but wrong about it being up Fulla's alley," I said.
She gave me a skeptical look. "It's not that Fulla likes mysteries, but that it's a mystery that I only learned about as a result of following her clues."
"Ahhh," she said. "Narrative. As opposed to thematic, which was what I said." I nodded. "And you're sure it's the one, and not both," she continued, making me look at her with a raised eyebrow.
"Themes matter, Jerry," she said with a self-satisfied smirk. I shrugged. "Fair enough," I said. She was probably right, which was something I should bear in mind.
I looked back at the city in front of us, then pulled out the map we'd found. It was on a plastic-like material, thin and foldable like paper. Avarisa had been the one to find it, and after playing with it a while, she'd figured it out. It was tech, not a simple printout. Pinching the creases flattened them out, then squeezing the outermost of four small circles at the bottom left made the light-grey sheet fill with a diagram of the city below. I squeezed the third circle, then handed the sheet to Avarisa.
"Mark all the portals you know about that lead to the Sixteenth World," I said. She took it, and began to press the tip of her finger to different spots, marking them with a red dot.
"I don't know all of them, but like you said, it's almost certainly going to be one of the ones I do know."
I waited for her to mark about a dozen spots, then draw a circle around one near the far end of the city.
"I think this is the most likely one," she said.
"Why is that?" I asked.
"It leads to a place where..." She trailed off, her face flashing through a pained expression and back to a neutral mask.
"What's wrong?" I asked. I tried to fill my voice with the usual levels of concern it would have when asking that question in response to that look, but like everything else I've said in the past few weeks, it came out cold and harsh. I couldn't even work myself into being upset about that, so I just waited for her to answer.
"Sarisa... I told you that she gave me memories of our time together, until you met Inanna," she said, speaking slowly as if this was a grave admission.
"I made it sound like those were the only memories I had, but she... She gave me others, including one in which I accompanied Tientus to the Sixteenth World, mere days after what calamity befell it. This portal leads to the place where we first appeared on that trip."
I nodded and looked at the map. "That will be more than a day's walk. We should probably fly. I don't want to camp in those ruins again."
The previous night, we'd camped in the city, as we had the night before. Only this time, we were attacked. A pack of unusual, canine animals had come sniffing around, likely drawn by the scent of our dinner. Magical alarms woke Kathy and I as they entered our small camp, and when we emerged from the tent to investigate, they animals attacked. We were forced to kill three of them before the others fled.
Of course, that wasn't what made the choice for us. Instead, as the seven or eight remaining animals fled into the night, we'd heard a roar, followed by more of the same yelping and growling we'd heard as we fought them off. It didn't last long. The ensuing crunching sound was very reminiscent of Ixy, but when I'd put in the buttplug and flown off to check, I'd found a rancor, instead.
Yes, like the rancor from
Star Wars. The resemblance was shocking. a bipedal animal with short, stubby legs, a powerful upper body, long arms with clawed hands and an enormous, forward-thrusting head with massive, fanged jaws. The only way in which it differed was the brown-and-gray coat of fur the thing wore. The coat was thick and full, reminding me of a bear's fur. It also blended in with the surroundings quite well.
I returned and we shifted our camp to the base of a large satellite dish on top of a thirty-story building that looked less likely to collapse than others nearby. This morning, I'd examined the dog-like creatures.
They reminded me of a thylacine. They had stripes on the back ends of their backs. Their rear legs had the same short thighs and long, thick calves as thylacines, and like the rancor, they had thickly muscled forelimbs and chests. During the brief fight, we had seen them open their jaws almost ninety degrees, a sight which is uniquely unsettling, even though they didn't pose much of a challenge to us. They had the same smooth, almost cat-like faces, narrow muzzles and distinctly dog-like noses as a thylacine, with subtle cranial ridges.
I'd seen videos of thylacines moving about, and read descriptions. One thing I recalled was that they were not particularly fast nor agile, a feature that clearly did not apply to the animals we'd fought off. They had moved lightning fast and struck like snakes, snapping bites and slinking away.
In any event, we had decided that since the ruins were the homes of several dangerous predator species, it would be best to to move outside of the city. With the map Avarisa had found, we could plan our forays better, in any event.
"I can't fly," Avarisa said. I turned to her, a look of disbelief on my face. "Kathy can fly, and she's about the least talented flyer of all of us."
"I'm going to tell her you said that," Spectre said with a little smile. I tried to smile back, really, I did. But my lips didn't twitch. "She knows. She's possessed of enough talent in other areas that she shouldn't be insecure about it."
Spectre's smile faded. She'd been trying for a little levity, which I appreciated, so I put an arm around her shoulders and kissed the top of her head.
"I've tried," Avarisa said. "I can't. I can levitate, but once I'm in the air, I can't seem to make myself move around. It feels like I should be able to, but I just can't. I think Sarisa did it. On purpose."
"I could check, with the right circle and tools, but I don't have the tools in hammerspace," I said. "But that can wait. I'll carry you when it's time to fly."
"Won't that slow you down?" she asked. I shrugged. "Not enough to matter. I'll most likely have to stay close to Kathy in any event. We should still be able to make it there before nightfall, tomorrow. We'll leave the camp here, unless we encounter more predators. If we do, we'll bring the camp and set it up on top of one of the buildings again.
Avarisa had assured us that there were no winged predators in this region that would pose any threat if they caught us unaware. I trusted her, because I'd seen the library she had been reading back at the gods' camp. It wasn't the Library of Souls, but it was nonetheless extensive. And I knew she read lightning fast. Like a speed reader, except she absorbed everything she read.
"Come on, I'm getting hungry," Spectre said. All three of us turned and walked down to the small copse, just off the peak of the hill, where we'd made camp. To my surprise, there was a second tent,a small pup tent, on the other side of the fire from the one we'd been sharing until this point. Kathy was busy heating up beef ravioli in a camp pot. She looked up as we approached.
"I found a pup tent buried in hammerspace. Might be a little less crowded in there with just two of you."
I nodded, taking one of the folding seats set around the fire. I produced a pair of plates, with utensils fitted into slots on their underside and handed one to Avarisa as she sat. Spectre made a circuit of the fire, then leaned down to speak quietly to Kathy.
"I'm going to go now," she said. Kathy smiled at her. "Will you tell Lya what we're up to?"
Spectre nodded. "Of course. I'll keep her company. She's working all week and coming home to an empty house."
"She'd appreciate that. I would, too," Kathy said. She kissed Spectre, to my surprise, not on the cheek, but on the lips, and the spirit vanished.
I didn't say anything about the kiss. Just because it surprised me didn't mean it interested me.
After a few minutes, Kathy doled out the food, producing her own plate at last. We ate quickly, washing it down with little plastic barrel-shaped containers of what tasted like watered-down koolaid. I kept several cases of them, pre-chilled, in hammerspace, mostly for my younger children, but.... I wanted them gone. Used up. So we drank them, three or four at a meal. It was tastier than water.
After we ate, the sun had fully set, so I cleaned up, scrubbing the plates with sand and then rinsing them in a stream at the base of the hill, and then we retired to our tents. Avarisa and I in mine, Kathy in her pup tent. I set my magical traps and alarms and then sat there for a bit, Avarisa laying on her side, next to me.
None of us had bathed since we got here. And though it was cold out, we'd been on our feet all day, every day. I could smell myself when I paid attention, and I could feel the grime and sweat built up under my clothes. I had a camp shower in hammerspace, and I sat there and considered whether it was worth retrieving, setting up, and heating up some water for.
"Would you like a shower?" I asked Avarisa after a few minutes. She lifted her head and eyed me.
"Fuck yeah," she said. "I feel like I've got a second skin, right now."
"You'll have to either share one with me, or we'll have to heat up two full pots of water over the fire. That'll take a while."
"We can share one, if you're okay with that," she said, her voice sounding a little strange.
"Okay," I said. I stood and unzipped the tent, stepping out.
"Kathy, I'm going to set up a camp shower, if you want to use it when I'm done," I said in a normal voice, knowing she could hear me through the thin material of her tent.
"Just leave it up, I'll use it in the morning," she said.
"Okay."
I retrieved it from hammerspace. It was a folding metal and fiberglass frame. It had a large bladder with a hook at the top to tie a rope through, to hoist it. There was a plastic plate that the bladder rested on, angled so as to make it easy to slide in and out of place. It had a hose at the bottom that connected to a shower head that could be used to spray yourself down, or hung just below the plastic plate. There was a tarp that wrapped around the whole thing for some privacy. The whole thing was packaged in a large pot.
I pulled the assembly out of the pot and began to set it up. It didn't take long at all. Once I had the frame assembled and wrapped in the tarp, the hard part begun. I carried the bladder down the hill to the small creek and filled it about 3/4 full of water. Using a bit of paracord through the hood, I hoisted it on my back and brought it back. I flung the free end of the paracord over a tree branch that looked capable of taking the weight, then grabbed the pot and headed back to the stream to fill it.
Lugging it back, I placed it on the cooking rack over the fire while Avarisa added some more fuel to build it back up. We then had to wait for the water to boil, which took about fifteen minutes. When that was done, we opened the bladder again, the mouth forming a large funnel, and poured in the boiling water. I tested it after we emptied the pot, and it was nice and warm.
"Okay, get undressed," I said as I hoisted the bladder up. It slipped up the plastic platform and I reached up to close the gate to hold it in place. I tied off the paracord (the gate alone wouldn't take the weight) and the quickly stripped as Avarisa stood next to the door, waiting for me. We had to move quickly, because the chilly air would cool the water quickly. The bag was not insulated, but rather a thick, black plastic so that one could use the sun to warm it over the course of a day.
I stepped in, producing two bars of soap from hammerspace and I opened the valve to spray both of us down with warm water. Once we were thoroughly wet, I closed it and handed Avarisa a bar. We soaped up quickly, the night chill getting to us.
Once we were thoroughly soapy, we ran the water to rinse again, then I sent the soap back and produced a combination shampoo and conditioner. We sudsed up our hair and rinsed off again. About two thirds of the water still remained in the bladder.
"Want to just enjoy the soak?" I asked. She nodded, so I left the valve open. She pressed against me, both of us sharing in the cascade of water. I watched the top of her head, and when she put her hands on my hips and looked up, I met her eyes.
"This is nice," she said.
"Yeah," I responded.
Flashes of memories swept through me. Aaina, when we first brought her home, afraid to be alone, needing me or Inanna in the shower with her. Sara and Junior, joining me for my showers once they were steady on their feet because it was just easier to bathe them that way, when time mattered. Normally, we let them play in the bath, but I'd scrubbed them down a few times in the shower.
And of course, those memories all gave way to the countless showers I'd shared with Inanna. It may come as a surprise, but most of the time, we simply helped each other get clean, and then got out. We had fooled around in the shower many times, of course, but that wasn't the norm. The falling water could be a distraction, whereas the possibility of getting clean and then fooling around as soon as we got out was almost always there.
Without even thinking about it, I put my hands on Avarisa's hips and pulled her into me. She didn't hesitate or resist, stepped forward and running her hands up my sides. I bent down and kissed her, and she quickly moved a hand to the back of my head, pulling me in, clinging to me.
We kissed for a long moment. It wasn't until I grew chilly and realized that the water had given out that I drew back. She rested one hand on my shoulder while the other slipped around to my front, to grab me.
"Are you sure?" she asked quietly. I shook my head. "Don't make me question myself," I said. "I just want to stop thinking."
She nodded, then met my eyes.
"I just finished my period," she said. "Yesterday was the last day. Tamp down on your fertility, Jerry, and I can all but guarantee you that I won't get pregnant."
I nodded. I lifted her up in my arms and carried her to the tent.
The next morning, I was woken by Kathy holding my pants, which I'd left draped over one of the folding chairs last night, peeking through the flaps of the tent. "Seriously?" she asked.
I blinked away the blurriness and focused on her. It took me a second to recognize what I was seeing, and another to put the pieces together in my mind.
"Shit," I muttered. "Sorry."
"It's your own clothes that have ants in them," Kathy said. "And hers."
I pulled Avarisa's arm off of me gently and slipped out of the sleeping bag. "I'll get it," I said.
"Good, I'm going to refill the shower. I already got a pot boiling. You two can start breakfast while I'm showering."
She handed me the pants and pulled her head out of the opening. Checking them, I could see that there were, indeed, tiny ants crawling all over them. I sighed and summoned clothes from hammerspace, then retrieved my stuff from the pockets and transferred it over. I walked out and picked up all the clothes we'd left out.
The ants had gotten into all of them.
I brought them down to the creek, passing Kathy as she walked back with the bladder three quarters full of water. She shook her head slowly, not saying anything as we met and then parted. I rinsed all the clothes out, letting the little ants get swept away in the current. When I returned to string up a paracord clothesline and hang them to dry, I could see Avarisa's silhouette in the morning glow, moving around inside the tent. I climbed in.
"I left my clothes out there," she said.
"Here," I said. I pulled a t-shirt, a hoodie sweater and a pair of pants from hammerspace. "These should fit. I don't have any underwear, though."
"I normally don't wear a bra," she said as she pulled the clothes on. "Going commando will be a new one, though..."
She finished dressing and we both went out to make breakfast. Kathy was in the shower, singing quietly as she scrubbed off. I got a good scramble going, eggs, cheese, bacon and potatoes, along with fried naan bread. When Kathy was finished, she toweled off and immediately sat down, not bothering to get dressed. We ate quickly, and I let Kathy get a large portion than the rest of us, because she seemed to need it.
When we were done, Kathy summoned clothes and I made a harness out of paracord.
"We're going to fly to the first portal, it's more than a day's walk," I told Kathy. She stared at me for a second.
"Shit, Jerry, you'd better stay close to me and help me with the landings," she said. I nodded. I intended to do just that. When I had the harness ready, I had Avarisa put on her armor, and then I secured her back to my chest, adding a few lines of paracord from her plate carrier that passed between her legs to be sure. I had her pad them out with one of the still-damp towels, which she giggled and protested over the chill about. I asked her to imagine her body weight all on the paracord lines between her legs, though, and her protests ended. The giggles continued for a few minutes, though.
Thus secured, we layered more magic over to the camp to ward off any curious animals and took off. Kathy wobbled a lot during the flight, but she managed to keep up with me, just fine. It took about two hours to reach the spot. I took Kathy's arms, reaching around Avarisa to do so, and we settled down on the ground in front of what looked like a high-end clothing store.
The clothes on the mannequins had all rotted away, and green mold coated the glass windows, making the insides dim. The doors were locked, so I smashed the glass out of one of the windows and we stepped in.
Avarisa led us to a wall, where I pulled down some shelves. Once clear, I touched the keys in my pockets mentally and a section of the wall shimmered. It seemed to fade from view, showing a desolate cityscape not too different from the one we were in. We all stepped through.
"Welcome to the Sixteenth World," Avarisa said, her voice a little choked. I wondered what memories Sarisa had given her that caused this.
We were in a much smaller city than before. Only four skyscrapers stood, each one immaculate except for the layer of dust dulling the windows. Lower buildings surrounded them, all looking to be made of concrete. The last city had brick and even a few wooden structures, but this place all seemed to be made of the same, light gray concrete. Streets, sidewalks and buildings alike.
Piles of rust stood here and there, the remains of vehicles left exposed to the elements for hundreds or thousands of years. And bodies.
In the last place, the bodies had been skeletons, mostly partial bodies, many with signs of being worried by the local fauna. Here, there were mummies.
I could see dozens of them, including at least one in every pile of rust. Desiccated corpses, clad in sun-bleached fibers that still kept their shape. I recognized T-shirts and button-down shirts, sundresses and skirts, pants and shorts. Avarisa wandered off, towards a smaller, one story building with a line of bushes in front. I followed her gaze to see a curious site.
Most of the vegetation was brown, but intact. Leaves still clung to tree and bush limbs, grass still lay across the ground. But where she was moving, there was a circle of... I'm not sure how to describe it.
The bushes in front of the building simply melted away as they approached the circle. Bushy brown limbs gave way to bare limbs, which gave way to shattered, sparse limbs, which gave way entirely. The grass grew sparse, and then faded out into dark, rich soil.
Right at the center of the circle lay two small skeletons.
Scraps of rough fabric still clung to their limbs. They were both small, young children, I thought. And they had no flesh left on them. Unlike every other corpse, these had been subjected to the process of decay.
"What happened?" I asked.
Avarisa knelt at the edge of the circle, staring at the remains in the middle. When she spoke, her voice cracked with grief.
"When Tientus first learned of what happened here, she grabbed two children. She brought them here, as guinea pigs, to see if whatever happened affected them. They hadn't done anything to displease her, they were just... The first humans she saw when she went looking, I think. She brought them here. Nothing happened, so I took them and was going to bring them home, but..."
She sobbed once, her shoulders hitching.
"She stopped me. Made me leave them, because she didn't want to wait the thirty seconds it would take me to bring them home. They died so that she wouldn't be inconvenienced in even the mildest way.
"These two children, whose names are long lost, they're the inspiration for the war. Because of them, I began creating the spell to strip a god's divinity. Because of them, I reached out to Astoram, who had always been at odds with the other elder gods, and secured his aid."
Kathy and I stood behind her, looking at the two small skeletons and listening to her words. When Avarisa stopped talking, we remained in place, thinking about the death and destruction that had resulted from the casual murder of two children.
"This is pretty heavy," Kathy said after a while. I nodded.
"Yes, it is," I said.
We must have stood there, reflecting on the bodies for ten minutes, when a sound came to us from the distance. All three of our heads came up and turned in the direction it had come from.
"Was that..." Kathy said. I nodded.
"Ixy's roar," I said.

2023.03.20 16:28 Dismal-Jellyfish This is not a 'bailout'! A review of the tools the Fed is leveraging ($308.063 Billion so far as of 3/15) while attempting to navigate the current environment: Primary Credit, Central Bank Liquidity Swaps, Bank Term Funding Program (BTFP), and âOther credit extensionsâ
| Good morning Superstonk, resident jellyfish back with you! I hope everyone had a great weekend. Seeing as yesterday saw coordinated central bank action to enhance the provision of U.S. dollar liquidity, I thought it would be useful to review these tools at the Fed's disposal as they attempt to navigate this mess they made while calling none of this a 'bailout'. Mainly: - Primary Credit
- Central Bank Liquidity Swaps
- Bank Term Funding Program (BTFP)
- âOther credit extensionsâ
Let's get to it! https://ycharts.com/indicators/us_loans_to_depository_institutions__primary_credit Federal Reserve lending to depository institutions (the âdiscount windowâ) plays an important role in supporting the liquidity and stability of the banking system and the effective implementation of monetary policy. By providing ready access to funding, the discount window helps depository institutions manage their liquidity risks efficiently and avoid actions that have negative consequences for their customers, such as withdrawing credit during times of market stress. Thus, the discount window supports the smooth flow of credit to households and businesses. Providing liquidity in this way is one of the original purposes of the Federal Reserve System and other central banks around the world. The "Primary Credit" program is the principal safety valve for ensuring adequate liquidity in the banking system. Primary credit is priced relative to the FOMCâs target range for the federal funds rate and is normally granted on a âno-questions-asked,â minimally administered basis. There are no restrictions on borrowersâ use of primary credit. https://www.frbdiscountwindow.org/Pages/General-Information/Primary-and-Secondary-Lending-Programs.aspx Here are some examples of common borrowing situations: - Tight money markets or undue market volatility
- Preventing an overnight overdraft
- Meeting a need for funding, including a short-term liquidity demand that may arise from unexpected deposit withdrawals or a spike in loan demand
The introduction of the primary credit program in 2003 marked a fundamental shift - from administration to pricing - in the Federal Reserve's approach to discount window lending. Notably, eligible depository institutions may obtain primary credit without exhausting or even seeking funds from alternative sources. Minimal administration of and restrictions on the use of primary credit makes it a reliable funding source. Being prepared to borrow primary credit enhances an institution's liquidity. Final thoughts on Primary Credit (for now): I wonder which institution(s) are seeking âno-questions-askedâ "no restrictions on borrowersâ use of primary credit." to the tune of to the tune of $152.85 billion this past week @ 4.75% up from 4.581B last week and up from 2.306B one year ago. This is a change of 3.24K% from last week and 6.53K% from one year ago. The sudden rise in Primary Credit shows big players are trying to get as much liquidity backstop as possible and are increasing their borrowing from the Fed, happily paying 4.75% to borrow billions. These are not cheap loans... I do wonder if this trickles down into Secondary and Seasonal Credit as this goes on? In April 2009, the Federal Reserve announced foreign-currency liquidity swap lines with the Bank of England, the European Central Bank, the Bank of Japan, and the Swiss National Bank. The Federal Reserve lines constitute a part of a network of bilateral swap lines among the six central banks, which allow for the provision of liquidity in each jurisdiction in any of the six currencies should central banks judge that market conditions warrant. In October 2013, the Federal Reserve and these central banks announced that their liquidity swap arrangements would be converted to standing arrangements that will remain in place until further notice. How it works: In general, these swaps involve two transactions. When a foreign central bank draws on its swap line with the Federal Reserve, the foreign central bank sells a specified amount of its currency to the Federal Reserve in exchange for dollars at the prevailing market exchange rate. The Federal Reserve holds the foreign currency in an account at the foreign central bank. The dollars that the Federal Reserve provides are deposited in an account that the foreign central bank maintains at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. At the same time, the Federal Reserve and the foreign central bank enter into a binding agreement for a second transaction that obligates the foreign central bank to buy back its currency on a specified future date at the same exchange rate. The second transaction unwinds the first. At the conclusion of the second transaction, the foreign central bank pays interest, at a market-based rate, to the Federal Reserve. Dollar liquidity swaps have maturities ranging from overnight to three months. When the foreign central bank loans the dollars it obtains by drawing on its swap line to institutions in its jurisdiction, the dollars are transferred from the foreign central bank's account at the Federal Reserve to the account of the bank that the borrowing institution uses to clear its dollar transactions. The foreign central bank remains obligated to return the dollars to the Federal Reserve under the terms of the agreement, and the Federal Reserve is not a counterparty to the loan extended by the foreign central bank. The foreign central bank bears the credit risk associated with the loans it makes to institutions in its jurisdiction. The foreign currency that the Federal Reserve acquires is an asset on the Federal Reserve's balance sheet. Because the swap is unwound at the same exchange rate that is used in the initial draw, the dollar value of the asset is not affected by changes in the market exchange rate. The dollar funds deposited in the accounts that foreign central banks maintains at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York are a Federal Reserve liability. The Swiss National Bank has used it 6 times for 7-day swaps totaling $20.5 billion: Back in September, the Swiss National Bank (SNB) used the long-standing swap line with the Fed for five 7-day swaps in a row. The largest swap amounted to $11.1 billion matured on October 27. Then again once more for a 7-day swap in December (matured on December 15th for $1,000,000). https://preview.redd.it/5gqzfga3pwoa1.png?width=608&format=png&auto=webp&s=95dde3941baf18a32f4ccc2930a101a4c7ea3cf8 The Bank of Canada, the Bank of England, the Bank of Japan, the European Central Bank, the Federal Reserve, and the Swiss National Bank are today announcing a coordinated action to enhance the provision of liquidity via the standing U.S. dollar liquidity swap line arrangements. To improve the swap lines' effectiveness in providing U.S. dollar funding, the central banks currently offering U.S. dollar operations have agreed to increase the frequency of 7-day maturity operations from weekly to daily. These daily operations will commence on Monday, March 20, 2023, and will continue at least through the end of April. The network of swap lines among these central banks is a set of available standing facilities and serve as an important liquidity backstop to ease strains in global funding markets, thereby helping to mitigate the effects of such strains on the supply of credit to households and businesses. Final thoughts on Central Bank Liquidity Swaps (for now): increase the frequency of 7-day maturity operations from weekly to daily. These daily operations will commence on Monday, March 20, 2023, and will continue at least through the end of April. It is going to be VERY curious to watch these numbers through the end of April. The SNB likely swapped $20.5 billion to provide short-term liquidity in September to Credit Suisse, right?!?!?! What about now? https://preview.redd.it/wxmo7jgspwoa1.png?width=821&format=png&auto=webp&s=64d48296cae3c0b52d8758c99f2fa6f9de80d415 - Borrower Eligibility: Any U.S. federally insured depository institution (including a bank, savings association, or credit union) or U.S. branch or agency of a foreign bank that is eligible for primary credit (see 12 CFR 201.4(a)) is eligible to borrow under the Program.
- Banks can borrow for up to one year, at a fixed rate for the term, pegged to the one-year overnight index swap rate plus 10 basis points.
- Banks have to post collateral (valued at par)
- Any collateral has to be âowned by the borrower as of March 12, 2023."
- Eligible collateral includes any collateral eligible for purchase by the Federal Reserve Banks in open market operations
https://preview.redd.it/49ma62jyqwoa1.png?width=867&format=png&auto=webp&s=0a5bb1ff5495130ba05175082fddf232074c95e6 Final thoughts on BTFP (for now): 'Banks have to post collateral (valued at par)' is NUTS. From what I have been able to read, this is not how this typically goes down--usually there is a haircut, not 'valued at par'. Any collateral has to be âowned by the borrower as of March 12, 2023." This should rule out banks buying securities at today's market prices and using them as collateral at the aforementioned ridiculous par. Includes loans that were extended to depository institutions established by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC). The Federal Reserve Banks' loans to these depository institutions are secured by collateral and the FDIC provides repayment guarantees. Final thoughts on "Other credit extensions" (for now): The Fed has loaned the newly created FDIC banks for covering depositors in Silicon Valley Bank and Signature bank (so far): $142.8 Billion. This number will be interesting to watch as other banks teeter. This not bailout is how much?!?! As of 3/15: - Primary Credit ($152.85 Billion)
- Central Bank Liquidity Swaps ($.47 Billion)
- Bank Term Funding Program (BTFP) ($11.943 Billion)
- âOther credit extensionsâ ($142.8 Billion)
Total (so far): $308.063 Billion REMEMBER: none of this 'matters' to the Fed. The Fed creates its own money, and cannot become insolvent. The above mentioned tools help its balance sheet as they are stored as assets. Especially as the Fed fights not being 'profitable' to the Treasury itself: https://preview.redd.it/yqlsbu6rvwoa1.png?width=1647&format=png&auto=webp&s=977279cce00c7659ffa3311068549fca79c6b203 Again, the Fed is playing slight of hand here. Storing losses (-41.067 billion as of 3/15/2023) on the balance sheet as an asset like what is happening above, rather than showing the loss on the income statement right away, is an old corporate accounting trick. The Fed explains this in footnote: The Federal Reserve Banks remit residual net earnings to the U.S. Treasury after providing for the costs of operations, payment of dividends, and the amount necessary to maintain each Federal Reserve Bank's allotted surplus cap. Positive amounts represent the estimated weekly remittances due to U.S. Treasury. Negative amounts represent the cumulative deferred asset position, which is incurred during a period when earnings are not sufficient to provide for the cost of operations, payment of dividends, and maintaining surplus. The deferred asset is the amount of net earnings that the Federal Reserve Banks need to realize before remittances to the U.S. Treasury resume. In other words, each week going forward, the linked chart will show the Fedâs total losses starting from September 2022. The bigger the negative number, the bigger the accumulated loss. So, 'wut mean'? This number will get bigger to indicate the amount of money the Fed owes the treasury ( -41.067 billion and counting). The Fed gets to just sit on this negative balance and when it starts making money for treasury again (from money it makes on interest and fees, lowering its operating expenses, paying less on dividends), will see that negative number start to shrink (in theory). However, losses in the six months since September now total More than half of all the earnings the Fed remitted over the entire year of 2022 (-$41.067billions vs. $76.0 billion all of 2022): The Federal Reserve Board announced preliminary financial information indicating that the Federal Reserve Banks had estimated net income of $58.4 billion in 2022. During 2022, Reserve Banks transferred $76.0 billion from weekly earnings to the U.S. Treasury, and, in September 2022, most Reserve Banks suspended weekly remittances to the Treasury and started accumulating a deferred asset, which totaled $18.8 billion by the end of the year. TLDRS: This not bailout is how much?!?! As of 3/15: - Primary Credit ($152.85 Billion)
- Central Bank Liquidity Swaps ($.47 Billion)
- Bank Term Funding Program (BTFP) ($11.943 Billion)
- âOther credit extensionsâ ($142.8 Billion)
- Total (so far): $308.063 Billion
None of this is supposed to have implications for the Federal Reserve's conduct of monetary policy or its ability to meet its financial obligations. However, what this will mean for Treasury I am not sure--with the current debt ceiling nonsense seeing Yellen taking extraordinary measures to keep everything afloat through June. You can bet they wish the Fed was sending those weekly earnings while having to navigate this environment. https://preview.redd.it/67y5k7zowwoa1.png?width=610&format=png&auto=webp&s=09c9b59338d09acbe10293e8d41ce166f91ea067 submitted by Dismal-Jellyfish to Superstonk [link] [comments] |
2023.03.20 16:26 Jellys_top5 My gf 19 F blocked me on everything after finding out where I 20 M was.
My gf(19f) and I (20m) have been together for a year and 6 months, love the girl to death. We're nearly complete opposites when it comes to personality. Sheâs more of a sensitive, overthinking everything, type of person, while Iâm just a really chill, down-to-earth type of guy, and sometimes our personalities would clash and would create problems such as the one below.
I am a native of Miami and a friend of mine wanted to go down to south beach, this is around spring break too. But a friend wanted to go to south beach, when he asked me I automatically said yeah, but I didn't say yea because I wanted to go party down in south beach I just said yeah because I was off and didn't have any plans with anybody and I hate staying home on a off day, it makes me feel like I'm wasting time, and somehow my friend was able to get 6 other mutual friends of ours to go too so I was most def going. Anyways we get to the beach and it's packed we manage to find a spot on the beach where there weren't to many people and we just sat in the sand and smoked like 6 joints. Mind you that's all we did that day we weren't in those big dancing crowds, weren't talking to nobody, we just smoked, laughed, went to a corner store, buy candy and smoked again and vibed. While smoking I was texting my gf, the conversation was cool until she just told me to leave her alone and enjoy my day, she has my location by the way. She's blocked my number and all socials. Situations like this has happened before where she would block me off on everything but there was something like a planned date that would usually required us to talk again to figure out if the date was canceled or not, but we don't have anything planned this time. And I don't wanna get her friends or any of my friends involved I hate that, What should I do?

2023.03.20 16:24 aob139411dl Is the south worth moving to from the north?
Hi all,
I am currently living in Manchester with my partner. We've contemplated moving to Crewe (or Cheshire in general) as we could afford a very beautiful house. We went on Sunday to view Crewe this time, and it was not the nicest of places. I found it very sad, and the idea of not being able to just walk into town to a nice coffee shop, or a cake place, or just an independent store, really put me down.
Sadly we've decided not to go for Crewe, which sucks as it was a nice house, however I've just been mulling over and over in my head that maybe the north isn't what it used to be to me? You see, I have 2 very close friends that will be moving soon: one to Edinburgh, the other to Canada (who may come back to Manchester or move to Wales after).
And whilst I have some not-so-close friends here and people I could potentially spend time with, I find it still very hard to relate to them or even make further friends. Secondly, after seeing Crewe and Congleton, I worry that I would not be able to get what I want in Manchester for a decent price in a decent area (a detached house). I can live with that though.
However, I am scared and anxious that with my two closest friends leaving that my partner and I are going to be alone, and I'm starting to wonder if it would just be best to move closer to his family. I'm not from the UK, so I don't have family close by(hence the extra level of anxiety of being alone).
I appreciate that there is a huge possibility that I will not be able to get a detached in the South, but I am wondering if it is better to just say F*** it and just move there? At least I would be a better distance to them? I was thinking Banbury, or Cardiff, but I am open to suggestions, or a slap in the face to say I have it good in Manchester.
Alternatively my partner and I were just thinking of packing it in and moving to Spain.
Just for context this was my original post about Crewe:

Welcome to Turn 10
Introduction
Fiatala, unsurprisingly, continues to have happenings on it.
Ether made some giant Sky Whales, big enough for people to live on. He also looked over the Orange eyes left over by Larina and decided to investigate it inside Koldarâs Library. Also did some scans over the Ruins battlefield. Teruna enchanced her forest communion, the form of the Panther. She also threw in some glass for her followers. She also get something from the Subject halls, a Quatali, feathered serpent that can hunt anything down. Tapas created a Demigod, Hamza, of death. He also improves his sphere of life at the Forge. Arthras got busy making a few islands and improving Cultivation, setting up a nation on the island that enjoyed much better trade with the outside.
The War between Runari and Ital had no winners, unless you consider the God of Death collecting his due a victory.
The Pendor Empire prepares assault on the Ral Mountain fort, however is gonna win that, there gonna be a lot of dead. Makes sense, you donât spend time making a military unless you plan to use it.
Kozilek was alarmed by Unzu, the new island nation stepping up itâs trade game and start launching new ways to get trade going. Making connections to Ral for example.

Memory transcript subject: Lani, Venlil Gardner Date: [standardized human time] October 27th, 2136
Next paw was when Chris would be able to go to school, we have all his supplies so as a treat me and him went on a walk through town. I was passing by Marlikâs place so went inside and greeted him.
âGood paw Marlik how are you?â Marlik turned in my direction as he was tending his plants and when he saw Chris his wool puffed up. âWHY IS THAT PREDATOR NEAR YOU?!â Marlik was panicking he dropped his water fan on the ground. âLook Marlik its fine this is just my new sonâ I tried to calm Marlik down and his wool only slightly went down. âLook Lani I know weâre wonderful friends but what were you thinking bring him in hereâ Marlik then turned to Chris and Chris just stared silently with his hands in his hoodie pockets. âLook Marlik how about you and me talk at the table while Chris just takes a look at your gardenâ there was brief silence.
âFine but if that predator ruins any of my plants weâre gonna have a problemâ I could hear the slight anger in his voice so we headed to the table while Chris walked into the garden marveling at its beauty.
âSo you mind exposing to me why you adopted a human?â I turned away from Chris and towards Marlik. âI just felt awful for them and hearing about Chrisâs case I just knew I had to take him inâ Marlik then grabbed a cup and filled it with juice and took a sip. âWhat does your daughter think of this Lani I mean seriously donât you think this will affect her in school?â Marlik took a big sip from his juice. âLook Marlik my daughter hopes that it will be fine Iâm just worried about the other kids you knowâ âlook Lani itâs just that you need to be careful alright, also what was so special about Chrisâs situation that you chose him?â I got a bit nervous when he asked âapparently he has something called autismâ Marlik was now curious when he heard this. He tilted his head âwhat is autism?â He took another sip of his juice. âIs a genetic thing that makes it so heâs better at problem solving but it also affects his social skills as he has trouble with thatâ Marlik then looked at me âso itâs kinda like Predators disease?â When I heard this I got angry. âIT IS NOTHING LIKE PREDATORS DISEASE ALRIGHT,ITS JUST HIS BRAIN!â Marlik went back a bit with his wool puffed up a bit âLook Lani just calm down I donât mean to insult him its just that it sounds similarâ I leaned over the table âwell maybe you shouldnât go around assuming things like that, I mean you say that to a full grown human who knows what will happenâ when I finished saying that Chris walked into the room. âHey you guys done talking or? Me and Marlik then turned to Chris. âOh yeah we weâre just finishingâ Chris then turned to Marlik âhey you have a wonderful garden just one questionâ Marlik then stared at Chris.
âAnd what would that be?â Chris then pointed to a statue in the garden of Venlil with wings. âWhere did you buy a statue like that, I mean it looks somewhat familiar to me but I just donât know whyâ Marlik than looked at the statue and then back at Chris âI bought it at a antique store in townâ âokay cool hey Lani can we go now?â I looked over to Chris âyeah sure come onâ
We then left Marlikâs house and started walking around the town again when Chris stopped and was staring at a building. âHey Chris you alright?â Chris then turned to me âthey actually have a vegan Mc Donaldâs?, come on we have to get something to eatâ Chris then grabbed me by the hand and we walked towards the restaurant and inside. We then order a couple fries, some apple and a soda. âSo Lani how do you like the fries?â I turned towards Chris âthey are delicious I mean I canât believe these are made of plants and they sell them so cheapâ me and Chris then talked for a bit as we walked back home.

"I've never even seen some of these runes before. I mean, I'm no artificer but I know most runes and these are just new." The elf says as she inspects the tablets that I copied those runes from the well room onto.
"And the ones you do know?" I ask
"Well there's the basic ones, heat, chill, strengthen, deflect, and weigh. Those are the ones that I've seen in use anyway, there's a few I know I've seen but I can't quite remember what they do and those ones that i don't recognise.
"Ok, I saw your captain hit the deflect one when I tried to push him back and it came back way stronger. how did it work, and why was it so strong?"
"Well a rune is activated by touch and the strength is based on how much mana it's imbued with, as well as the precision of the rune itself. Being the captain, his runes have a lot of mana and are very well made."the elf explains.
"How do you imbue a rune?"
"Ah, that's a very difficult question, every artificer has their own way of doing it but most require complete focus, and many hours of dedicated meditation. The process can take a very long time, but runes can last up to years before needing to be imbued again."
"Mhm, like this?" I ask as I pour some mana into the deflect rune, making it glow a brilliant lilac. The mage goes slack jawed for a moment before snapping out of it.
"Yeah.. that's exactly right. Uh, now just touch it to activate." I touch a stone finger to the symbol, causing the entire slab to glow a brilliant violet. I hit it against the floor a few times and it doesn't chip or crack at all. I tap the rune again to deactivate and power and power the chill rune the same way I did the last. Once again the tablet glows a vibrant lilac and a frost forms over the surface. I tap the protection run and the frost thaws.
"Can you not have more than one at once?" I ask.
"No, well, technically yes, but I don't know how. Only the wizards of the world tree have figured it out and they don't share that knowledge.
"Alright, I'll solve that challenge after I've made my home safe. Oh and I never got your name?"
"Ah, It's krĂĄsa of pigĂĄdia, but just krĂĄsa is fine. And you?"
"Wika of⊠not here." I say, as the elf adjusts her silvery robes, matching her shining silver hair, pulled into a loose ponytail. I realize I've been staring for a while as I meet her amber eyes and quickly move on.
"A-anyway, you can move around from here to the basement. I'll make you a room near there, don't try to leave, be nice, and I might give you back your staff."
She nods in agreement, and I let her out of the pit, leaving my big golem which I've named Rupert to watch her.
I pop up to the kids to make sure they're still doing well, they seem to be doing much better but they still need rest, so I have Giovanni stop by to l cook something for when they wake up and set out to check all the runes and put them to use.
I decide the well room is a good place to experiment, so I use up some mana powering all the runes on the tablets, surprisingly it doesn't take as much as I thought. It's still a bit pricey with my current mana intake but I would have thought they would cost more.
The strengthen, deflect, heat, and chill all work how I expected, those are all on the first tablet along with one more, touching this one makes it glow a bright white but does nothing else, on the second tablet are four more runes, the first two do nothing at all, glowing like normal but with seemingly no effect. The third makes a loud snap boring a hole straight through the tablet, destroying the rune. I remake it but it's no longer powered. Finally I tap the last one and the tablet disappears from my hand, reappearing right where it was a minute later and falling to the floor.
Alright, time for traps. They want a dungeon, I'll give them one. I start with some more deadfalls in each doorway. I'm not pulling any punches when those soldiers come back so I add some sharp stone spikes at the bottom. I remake all the doors and add strengthen runes so they can't just be kicked down like before. I also change the layout of the dungeon, moving the staircases so that you'd have to walk through every room on each level to reach the next.
In the first room after the basement, I make a much larger heat rune on the ceiling, it takes about as much mana as five smaller runes but tapping it instantly makes the air boil. A couple golems with strengthen runes fit well behind a half wall for them to hide behind. In the next room I put a large deflect rune on the floor, as I hoped, activating it makes the room act like a trampoline. Every footfall is thrown back with more strength making it almost impossible to walk. I make a few golems connected to the ceiling ane give them both dart guns, the darts don't take too much metal so I make a lot, and dip them all in poison extracted from the mushrooms and berries that weren't good for eating.
In the last room on this level, I took some inspiration from a game I used to play. I use some metal to make a large spring like you'd find in a hair clip and add a strengthen rune and use that to springload a wall of spikes that is activated by stepping on a pressure plate. I make sure to add a deflect rune to the wall it will hit in order to reset it, and a strengthen to the spikes. That's looking good for now and I'm running very low on mana, so I pop up to the kids to see that they've already eaten and gone back to bed. I float over in my ethereal form and rest above them. Nothing will hurt them again. I'll make sure of that.

2023.03.20 15:30 CalicoIda Wilderness School concept in "Into the Wild"
Now that I've made the first post about Azusa, now I might as well explain the school ship that I have in mind when I will be planning this.
While the school doesn't have a specific name (Name suggestions are welcomed in the comments.) It does have the theme of the wilderness in mind: big, mysterious, and relaxation as this is a school that helps students deal with social and emotional issues while another school I have deal with physical and mental issues. The school ship is based off of the
USS Gerald R. Ford, the largest carrier in the world as of today. The school ship is 17 miles long (Don't know if its too big) despite being the largest school ship, it's also one of the emptiest only home to a few hundred people, the students, staff, naval personal and the businesses/personel. The rest of the school is dominated by deep forests except for the aft part of the ship which is the school, a couple of apartment buildings, a food/general goods store, library, hospital and bakery/tea house. Scattered through this school are tiny four room cabins the students own which can care up to a single student (Maybe 2 or 3 depending on how many beds the owner of the cabin is willing to have.)
The school's only mode of transportation is by bike as there are several gorgeous trails the students could take if they wanted to have a fast travel other than walking around. The one most used by students if they want a quick trip to get a sceneic view is Lookout Pass. Lookout pass spans 15 out of the 17 miles from the school. It's filled with steel tressle bridges and tunnels the students could travel through and is considered the best route to travel supplies through. There are other less used trails but those trails the students could get lost on unless they have a guide from one of the local students or a map as the dense forest means it is easy to get lost.
Lookout Pass is named the
"Chicago, Milkwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Rail Trail" Or just Milwaukee Road according to Rosie as originally there was supposed to have a train to travel through the pass but MEXT abandoned the idea as they wanted to keep the school as peaceful as possible so the students didn't get distressed by the screaming of train horns and bells.
This school is also one that is directly funded by MEXT as this school is only a couple years old when the story takes place meaning it has appeared very recently.
Confirmed characters:
Rosie: While appearing in an earlier post and the Der Film Fanfic as the Stuart commander with bazookas to her tank, she is given a role here as one that befriends Rabbit team as she is on the ship to spend the summer alone. She is a light brown haired girl with stubby twintails and light brown eyes. She is 15 years old in the events of this fanfic.
Jake: A 19 year old volunteer who is working here to help students with needs. He is a soft strawberry blonde with brown eyes unlike his younger brother who's hair is a little lighter in color. He owns a fire-colored bike with white handlebars. He is a very welcoming and friendly person who is willing to sit down and talk to the students to help them get over their needs.
??? (She needs a name): An old lady with golden yellow eyes and gray hair. She isn't the most approachable person as for her mangy appearance but she was a once respectable nurse for Kuromorimine. She also knows Shiho from her younger days when the latter was a student and wants to try to recorrect herself with the help from Miho.
I think there will be a bunch more characters like one big clique of students and maybe some more boys who help out with running the school and keeping it supplied by transport deliveries. Let me know what you have in mind.

2023.03.20 15:12 AuthorRKeene [The Primeval Apocalypse] - Chapter One (collaboration with u/hydrael)
| The Primeval Apocalypse by Robert Keene and Alex Raizman Cover Image Robert's Published Books Hydrael's Published Books Robert's Patreon Hydrael's Patreon Get updates on Discord! Start Here (Prologue) Next In nature, only the strong are supposed to survive. In defiance of all odds, I did too. For now. Six months after the apocalypse, I was still alive and kicking. A big part of that was the same way I survived the civilized world before the apocalypse. Finding a job that needed doingâand one that everyone else hatedâand doing it very well. As soon as youâre doing dirty work that nobody else wants, the people who want that work done will realize that your continued survival is in their best interest and theyâll take care of you. It just turned out in a world without retail shops, the dirty work that nobody else wanted was to act as a big stupid diversion. And, like everything else in life, being a diversion is just a primitive, degenerate form of customer service. The customers now were the raiders who needed the enemy guards drawn away from their farms, and the service was now hurtling myself into danger as noisily as possible. Iâd split off from the raiding party just under an hour ago, arriving at the far side of the enemy village just before designated go time. Without any ability to communicate, the sign for their infiltration would be the alarm that would go out when I made my presence known. Technically, I could start now, but I knew better. A single person moved through the forest far better than a group. Especially the specific group in question. Nothing against Rebecca. Sheâd been great to hang out with between missions. But when a task involves overland travel, Rebeccaâs a liability. The forest around me was not at all what I was expecting before the apocalypse came and dumped me into it. From the message right before everything hit the proverbial fan, Iâd expected that we were getting dumped into the Jurassic period, full of dinosaurs and palm trees and tropical ferns. Obviously, with hindsight, that was an expectation driven by depictions of prehistory through the lens of cartoons, and not grounded in fact. Instead, I was standing in the middle of an old growth pine forest, with trees that were dozens of feet around and stretching up too high to track from the ground. The interwoven canopy above simply did not let enough light reach the ground for foliage to grow here. The only things that survived were fungus, moss, and lichens. Things that could endure the lightless existence. Up ahead was different, though. A dense explosion of green. Light poured in from a gap in the forest canopy, feeding shrubs, bushes, and other plants that would starve anywhere else in this forest. Bright green foliage was interrupted here and there with bulging bunches of berries. Clumps of leaves sprouting from the dirt promised tuberous vegetables in the ground beneath. The huge lump of greenery looked like a giant hill in the light covered with a natural bounty. I knew better. That veritable Garden of Eden had been birthed on the back of an enormous stump. And someone had cut down this tree with purpose. Someone had cultivated what grew from the stump. Someone had worked tirelessly in the forest canopy to ensure that the window of light remained open to keep this mixed crop growing and healthy. These cutout gardens were all through the forest here, surrounding the enemy settlement. I could probably sneak up and grab a handful of berries without issue. I might even be able to dig out a few tubers and herbs and fire-roast myself a meal to last through the night. But the guards would respond too quickly. I could see three of them from here. A pair on patrol, passing by as they went between the various garden stumps. There was another amidst the foliage, carefully picking weeds out from around the base of the largest berry bush. Hunched-over and hairy, the farmer looked more like the creature the enemy resembled, where the guardsâalert and walking uprightâcould pass for humans at a far enough distance. They were enormous mandrills. Old-world primate from the world before the old world. Hairy and muscular, they had red noses flanked by blue-white ridges. They were larger and more heavily-built than the mandrills I remembered, their size and behavior marking them as a semi-civilized people rather than just big angry monkeys. I would see their town soon enough, but even from here, they were clearly more than animals. They moved with calm and disciplined purpose, and while most of their modesty was preserved by their dense fur, they wore dyed loincloths to cover their lower bodies while retaining the bright colors that were usually a sign of strength, health, and desirability as mates among their species. With their natural advantages and strong foothold in this primeval world, the mandrills had proven to be the greatest threat to human lives, even next to disease, starvation, and the other monstrous natural threats. The mandrillsâ dark brown fur would let them blend in with the trees of the forest to be near-invisible, were it not for the colorful ornamentation on their faces and rear ends. These three nearby were taller than me, but only by a handful of inches. As expected, this close to the settlement, they were the mandrill women. The men were usually over seven feet tall, and much more brightly colored. Rather than protecting the town and managing the farmwork, the men roamed the wilderness in gangs, acting as satellite patrols keeping threats at bay. I was far too close to town now to worry about them. The only men I was likely to see would be juveniles. Children too young to be far from their mothers. Well, them, and also the alpha. I gritted my teeth and remained silent as the guards walked by. Patience was a virtue, even in this dangerous world. I needed more time before raising a stink and drawing the Mandril guards to me. My friends were unlikely to be in position yet. Not slowed down as they were by their numbers. And Rebecca. I checked my status menu, and the system that had kicked this whole mess off filled me in on my current details. Normally I wouldnât read the entire screen of information, but in my nervous state, the familiar numbers helped to soothe away my worries for the upcoming mission and remind me how far Iâve come. How many times Iâve done this before. The quests were auto-generated by a system that seemed to be only barely sentient, so most of them were half-baked tutorials for systems I had no interest in. Trying to teach me random crap about metalcraft and carpentry even though I had neither the skills nor the tools to engage with them. Those had all been marked to hide, and silenced for the foreseeable future. Only two remained active. Reach Level 5 Completing objectives, overcoming challenges, and defeating powerful foes will gain you experience points to increase your level. At level 5 you will unlock: Choose A Subclass. Milk Run XXCVIII (Shared with Party) Hamlet Jamestown is running low on food. Locate and donate at least 50 lbs of food to avert this crisis. I could almost sense the guardsâ Observation checks bouncing off my Stealth skill as I crouched at the base of a skyscraper-like tree just a few yards off their patrol route. Any move I made to get to more secure cover would give them a bonus to their checks, but I could just wait for them to pass me by. One of them hesitated, causing me to hold my breath, but she just snaked a hand out to sneak a berry off of the garden and pop it into her mouth before moving on. They made their way out of view to my right around the next giant pine tree just a few moments later, opening the narrow window Iâd need to rush through. It would take under a minute for the next patrol to emerge from the forest to the left. Creeping forward, I gave the farmer as wide a berth as I could, careful to avoid shuffling my feet on the thick carpet of brown pine needles beneath me. Soon it wouldnât matter if my friends were in position or not. As I passed the farmer and moved towards where I knew the Mandril settlement would be, the clock had started. It was only a matter of time before someoneâor somethingâsucceeded on the Observation check to spot me. Of course, that simply meant that the stage was set. As soon as the alarm went up, it was showtime. submitted by AuthorRKeene to redditserials [link] [comments] |

- The 343 Plz list will be on both our wiki as well as the weekly sticky thread. The sticky thread will provide a prominent place on halo to routinely list and discuss these items, as well as suggest new ones.
- Once a topic has been added to 343 Plz, it will be 'retired' from the subreddit until there is either significant news relating to the topic, or if the actual topic is added/changed to the game.
You can find the 343 Plz wiki page here: https://www.reddit.com/halo/wiki/343plz
You can also check out the 343 Plz announcement thread here: https://www.reddit.com/halo/comments/ud70v9/introducing_343_plz_a_list_made_from_your_feedback/
How do I submit to 343 Plz?
- Find three recent popular threads talking about your feedback; we're looking for multiple front page threads (300+ upvotes) and/or highly-active discussions (100+ comments) over the past few months
- Submit your idea and the required threads either in this sticky or via this Mod Mail template
- If your idea does not have the required threads, it won't be added; instead, make a standalone post about your topic
What is the point of this weekly thread?
The point of this weekly thread is to organize and sticky popular community feedback for 343, allow discussion of these 'retired' items, and suggest new ideas for 343 Plz.

2023.03.20 14:59 FriendofSnails Non-owner - I'M MAKING AN AVIARY AS A GIFT - help/advice/criticism/tips/anything pls
Hello hello! I hope everyone in
parrots is having a great day.
I am making an aviary for my partner's mother's quaker as he has been in a canary/finch cage for his entire life. He is not taken out of his cage very often and he rarely flies. He is very aggressive and has a lot of energy, so I am hoping that making him a larger home will have a significant effect on his mood as he is still only around 12 years old and has a lot of life ahead of him.
I have done a bit of research on how to befriend the bird because I love animals, however, I have never owned a bird and want to make sure that this project suits his needs.
I'm going to be building a quail coop this spring and will be buying extra 1"x2" galvanized steel fencing to fabricate an aviary for this quaker, Buddy, as well. Currently he lives on the mantle of their stairwell, which gives a lot of space to build this aviary. Basically he will be going from a small 24"x18"x30" cage to something that goes the entire length of the mantle, about 5'x4'x4'. The aviary will have a main part and then a spacious atrium where he can go while mum cleans the cage.
I want to ensure that I am picking materials that are safe for the bird, so here is my plan:
The bottom will have a big pull-out tray made of veneer, coated in a food-safe epoxy/resin, so that mum can just easily pull it out and wipe it clean of excrement.
I have 3 small-to-medium pieces of driftwood that I will be sterilizing as perches. I got them from the ocean as opposed to a freshwater source if that matters, I am loosely familiar with the process of claiming wild driftwood from when I had a leopard gecko but if there are other concerns for birds please, please let me know!
I am going to basically be cutting out the fencing in a pattern and attaching it together with rope as if it were plastic canvas, and then blasting the rope (nylon?) with a bit of heat to lock it into place. I'm hoping this will keep any of the cut edges of the fencing tucked away safely from the bird. I am hesitant to use wood anywhere else than the base just because he could chew it and get splinters, maybe??
He currently doesn't have a sleeping house so I am designing one, it is basically a 4-post mini gazebo at the moment so any tips to make him a comfy sleeping place would be greatly appreciated :) I would like it to be easy to clean so I am not certain which materials I should use, and where in the cage it would be best placed.
ANY toy ideas for him would be great!! I am very handy and can probably fabricate any ideas that anyone has. I've got a few ideas, like making a garland out of those tug-of-war rope toys for dogs, and Ill be purchasing him a two-sided beauty mirror so that he cans see himself being pretty and then see himself being ~funky~

2023.03.20 14:51 coloradon5x BMW Catalytic Converters Parts
| When it comes to car exhaust systems, the catalytic converter is one of the most important components. It plays a critical role in reducing harmful emissions and ensuring compliance with environmental regulations. If you drive a BMW in Colorado and need replacement catalytic converter parts, the Colorado N5x Store is a great place to start. https://preview.redd.it/8ttx56qofwoa1.png?width=603&format=png&auto=webp&s=75fc7f0e0b267b59ed4cc0781b4d600d61a61307 What is a Catalytic Converter? https://preview.redd.it/7jp04kypfwoa1.png?width=500&format=png&auto=webp&s=60766e1216085b8ce44953e4e783416fb736ad5a A catalytic converter is a device that is installed in the exhaust system of a vehicle. Its job is to convert harmful pollutants in the exhaust gas into less harmful substances before they are released into the atmosphere. The most common pollutants that are converted by a catalytic converter include nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide, and hydrocarbons. How Does a Catalytic Converter Work? https://preview.redd.it/yjrvi64rfwoa1.png?width=467&format=png&auto=webp&s=5378f2c280732ed9c6ad2167b6cf559cbcf90a31 A catalytic converter contains a ceramic honeycomb structure that is coated with precious metals such as platinum, palladium, and rhodium. As the exhaust gas flows through the converter, these metals interact with the pollutants and cause them to break down into less harmful compounds. The process of catalytic conversion can be broken down into two main types: oxidation and reduction. In an oxidation reaction, the pollutants are oxidized, or combined with oxygen, to form carbon dioxide and water. In a reduction reaction, the pollutants are reduced, or combined with hydrogen, to form nitrogen and water. Why is a Catalytic Converter Important? https://preview.redd.it/fxu0t3zrfwoa1.png?width=281&format=png&auto=webp&s=652274b90a68b3a267b0c27100d99b5391071df0 Catalytic converters are important for several reasons. First, they help to reduce harmful emissions from vehicles, which can have a significant impact on air quality and human health. Second, they are required by law in many countries, including the United States, as a means of reducing pollution. Finally, they can help to improve the performance and fuel efficiency of a vehicle by reducing back pressure in the exhaust system. Exhaust Parts and Kits https://preview.redd.it/h5mq0gftfwoa1.png?width=504&format=png&auto=webp&s=a913ad3da2ec7594dd10a045d13b7f241cba9cb5 If you need to replace your BMW's catalytic converter, it's important to choose high-quality exhaust parts and kits. The Colorado N5x Store in Colorado offers a wide range of exhaust parts and kits, including catalytic converters, exhaust pipes, mufflers, and more. When choosing exhaust parts and kits, there are several factors to consider. First, you'll want to make sure that the parts are designed specifically for your BMW model and year. This will ensure that they fit properly and function as intended. Second, you'll want to consider the materials used in the parts. High-quality materials such as stainless steel can provide better durability and longevity. Finally, you'll want to consider the brand and reputation of the manufacturer. Choosing a reputable brand can ensure that you're getting high-quality parts that are backed by a warranty. Exterior Car Accessories https://preview.redd.it/oniw7b9wfwoa1.png?width=301&format=png&auto=webp&s=00e8fc60e9d6ce6471350792c7b73b57daacbc1f In addition to exhaust parts and kits, the Colorado N5x Store also offers a range of exterior car accessories. These accessories can help to enhance the appearance and performance of your BMW. Some popular exterior car accessories include body kits, spoilers, and carbon fiber accents. Body kits are a popular accessory that can help to give your BMW a more aggressive and sporty look. They typically include front and rear bumpers, side skirts, and other body panels that are designed to fit your specific BMW model. Spoilers are another popular accessory that can help to improve the aerodynamics of your vehicle and provide a more aggressive look. Carbon fiber accents such as mirror covers, grilles, and trim pieces can also help to give your BMW a more high-end look. Conclusion If you drive a BMW in Colorado and need replacement catalytic converter parts, the Colorado N5x Store is a great place to start. They offer a wide range of high-quality exhaust parts and kits, as well as exterior car accessories that can help to enhance the appearance and performance of your BMW. Whether you're looking for a new catalytic converter or a body kit, the Colorado N5x Store has you covered. submitted by coloradon5x to u/coloradon5x [link] [comments] |
