2023.06.07 18:05 Thefakeout4444 Big Epiphany! Feel Good

So I’m talking to a girl on twitter and she’s living in an abusive household. She just graduated from high school and is setting up to move out. Being the INFJ that I am I usually find myself in the support group helping out with the emotional burden of such problems in life.
So we are talking about what her plan is to get out of her current living situation and where she’s going and everything. And then she says “probably nothing will change tbh”.
Then I go zen mood and say “That’s gonna age poorly 😂” “You will get out and be able to look back and say it’s changed” “LIFE IS CHANGE”(not in all caps but this is the epiphany)
I recently just haven’t felt human. I feel like a zombie going through the motions doing what is needed of me and then going back to my hole in the void called my bedroom. I just never really cared about living in the world or being apart of it.
Hearing myself say those words I realized I was prolonging the inevitable. I can’t stop change because change is life. And I can’t stop life (you know how). I was just in stasis afraid to move because I didn’t want the change that was bound to happen. I wasn’t living life the way it was meant to be lived.
I still hate the world don’t get me wrong 😂. It’s a rotting pile of shit. However I’ve been rotting with it because I didn’t change sooner. I’m better than that.
TLDR: I was talking to someone and said “Life is change” and I realized I was in stasis with my life and needed to change.

2023.06.07 18:03 Zestyclose-Day5265 Access a Cheating Spouse Social Media Account//How to catch spouse cheating on social media? How to find out if your spouse is cheating on social media? How to catch a cheating spouse using technology? What website for cheating spouses was hacked?

Allhackgecko.com --------------------- Relationship is based on trust. If you don’t trust the person you want to spend a lifetime with, who else would you trust? In plain words, lovers have to be smart while they are in love, so that one would not suffer unexpected heart break when you discover later that your significant half is cheating on you.
INTRODUCTION
Relationship is based on trust. If you don’t trust the person you want to spend a lifetime with, who else would you trust? They say love with your heart but keep your eyes open. In plain words, lovers have to be smart while they are in love, so that one would not suffer unexpected heart break when you discover later that your significant half is cheating on you.
Technological innovations have made our lives easier and better. No argument. And with each passing day, it keeps getting better. We now have smartphones, tablets, iPads and all kinds of mobile devices. Another addition to our everyday life is social media, with which came services like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Tinder, Snapchat, Pinterest, Tumblr and many others. These applications have also made communication a lot easier with their instant messaging applications.
While these innovations have contributed positively to our lifestyles, they also came with a lot of complications especially on relationships. Social media and mobile devices have had a profound impact on how people cheat. You no longer have to meet in person in order to have an affair. In fact, lots of people are perfectly fine with having a digital-only affair. Now, your partner could be using an Instant Messaging App like a Facebook Messenger, Instagram, WhatsApp and so on to talk with another person.
In this article, we discussed different ways to access your partner social media account so as to accurately determine whether they are cheating on you.
METHOD OF ACCESSING A CHEATING PARTNER’S SOCIAL MEDIA ACCOUNT
Despite all the signs you have seen, there is still not enough proof he is cheating. Without concrete proof, all that you have seen are mere suspicions. Even if you mention all these things to them, most will out rightly deny the allegations and they will end up becoming smarter at covering their tracks.
If that is the case, you have to act more smartly and wisely. Some techniques on how you can access your partner’s social media account are discussed below;
Social Engineering or Guessing
Being in a relationship with your partner exposes you to some of their personal information. With this information you can figure out the password of your partner. Most people usually use the name of their spouse, name of their kids, date of birth, pet names, e.t.c. as passwords. You can also try other characters they could possibly use. Once you are able to figure it out, you should be able to access their social media accounts since it is most likely they might be using the same user details across different platforms.
On gaining access to their social media account, you would be able to read all the chats, discover their new friends and even know GPS locations or places they have been.
Contact us at Allhackgecko.com for technical problems about your task or issue regarding hacking services.Use Spying Apps
There are so many apps outside there that claims they can spy on any type of phone. Some are real while others are fake. Caution is advised when planning to use spying apps so that you don’t get hacked yourself. You may ask an expert for guidance on the best spying apps.
Most of these apps need you to have access to your partner’s device to enable you install the app on it. In case he uses iOS powered devices, knowing his Apple ID and password will do the trick. For those who do not have physical access or know his Apple ID and password, devising crafty schemes to trick him into installing the app will be highly needed.
Phishing
This involves sending a link to your partner and they are required to click. Once the link is clicked, you will be able to see all login credentials for the various social media services and apps. To do this, you need to download a phishing software that can hack social media accounts. Then create a fake website and use the website to send a phishing link to your husband.
It requires expertise to perfect and not be caught. Contact your favourite expert hacker on Allhackgecko.com
Hire A Hacker
Know that your partner only cheat, they are not dumb. The point here is they are also trying every means not to be caught. They explore every available tool and resources to do this. If you think you can catch them with the old technique, you will wait long and may never get them especially they are smart.
Hiring Allhackgecko.com is still the best thing to do when trying to catch a cheating spouse. Professional hackers use the latest tools and software to track cheaters and gather evidence that can justify your suspicion.
Other benefits you derive from hiring hackers include;
Social Media Tracking
Most smart cheaters believe that by deleting their history, they can remove all of their cheating digital footprints. This is not true. Hackers have ways of recovering deleted history from browsers, no matter how long.
GPS Location Tracking
Professional Hackers have the capability to monitor your partner’s location through GPS system remotely thereby maintaining some level of discreteness.
Reduce Risk of being exposed
You don’t want your partner to know that you are suspecting him. The only way of reducing the risk to the barest minimum is hiring a hacker to do the job for you and provide you with necessary evidence.
CONCLUSION
Discovering that your partner is cheating on you all of a sudden is not one of the mistakes you should make in a relationship. However, the sooner you knew, the better. Lack of trust in any relationship has a number of negative consequences, among which are low self-worth on the person being cheated, bitterness, quarrels and heated argument, or even marriage dissolution. If you have a strong feeling that you are being cheated on by your spouse on social media or you see some of the signs described in sections of this article, ensure you contact us immediately on Allhackgecko.com

2023.06.07 03:06 Oak_Draiocht The Current Whistleblower momentum and what it means for Experiencers.

Background :
There has been a lot of chatter from various sources over the past few months of something coming down the line this summer that'll push the ball forward regarding this topic. With some saying 2023 will be as big a year if not bigger than 2017 was for us.
This chatter started to hint that there was a lot of work happening behind the scenes and a lot of orchestration to make sure this info gets out as they were juggling a lot of push back and having to maneuver around it. And had plans in place in-case of push back. Eventually rumors started to hint that this info was to be related to the recovering of crashed craft or material.

Current Situation:
As many are aware there is currently an on going situation unfolding that is going to gain more and more momentum over the next few days or even weeks.
On Monday the 6th of June, a high-level intelligence official turned whistleblower David Charles Grusch has come forward announcing that extraterrestrial craft and bodies have been recovered and kept secret by the U.S. government.

Need to Know podcast with Ross Coulthart regarding all this.
Thread on UFOs
A thread from our on sub on the importance of all this.

More interviews and news articles will be coming over the next few days and this post will be updated accordingly.

What does this mean for Experiencers?
This is a shocking revelation and coming much sooner than many of us thought. Personally I was expecting chatter on perhaps "recovered material of unknown origin" and a long stretch of time of hints and build up before words like Non Human Intelligence would be uttered. This is not Disclosure however. Like it or not there is going to be some debate in the non experiencer world regarding the credibility of this guy his story and information. Many won't care what he says and won't accept anything until the major world leaders confirm what this man is saying. There is a road to come to regarding that still. But this opens the door for waves of further whistleblowers to come forward of which we know there are many.
But as Experiencers we already known Non Human Intelligence is here interacting with our species. For us this gets the ball rolling for further to that inevitable point that eyes will suddenly aimed at us and what we have to say. That will be a very delicate time. But still there is a way to go yet.
This is going to trigger waves of more Experiencers to come out though. Coming face to face with their experiences and sharing their story in places such as this and else where.
From doing direct work with Experiencers it has been fascinating to see the amount of people who's journeys into this world started when articles legitimizing this topic in 2017 came out. And the summer UAP report came out in 2021. Neither of those moments were "Disclosure" with capital D. But for many many many people out there these watershed moments suddenly gave people intellectual permission to take this topic seriously. Many Experiencers I've spoken to went through an awakening due to these events. They had no interest in this topic or so they thought. Then this bits of info came out and suddenly they are on an seekers journey deep diving into topic after topic. From nuts and bolts to consciousness is fundamental. Many people went on journeys that resulted in a contact event for them. Confirming this reality is real and juggling ontological shock. And many came to terms that they had already been contactee or had some other form of anomalous experience that they had buried, and now suddenly they had "permission" to engage with it.
The current events unfolding are another watershed moment regarding all this. Regardless of what comes out of it and this does not push things as far along Disclosure wise as many would hope. There is now going to be waves and waves of more people coming to term with their contact being real. Or perhaps even triggering a journey that results in a contact event. On that note Please see Mantis's stickied companion thread on Experiencers.
So indeed this does push the topic forward simply with the conversation happening. For all of us.
Another thing that may well come from this current whistle blower situation is chatter around the historical reality of gross mistreatment of Experiencers by groups wanting to suppress them. From civilian Experiencers to military. There is decades of mistreatment that has happened here that may now get the attention it deserves. People will be asking "Why have more people not been talking about this" and while of course, there as been people talking about this for decades - there has also been major mistreatment of those that do. Ross got very passionate about the things he's heard during his research into this topic. "Very grave criminal offenses have been committed."
If you want to have a tiny insight into some of the ways experiencers have been mistreated, this recent interview with Robert Luca, the husband of the famous contactee Betty Andreasson, is one of many illustrations of the level of harassment and intimidation experiencers have historically gone through just for talking about their story. With this current whistleblower testimony hitting the mainstream and the high potential for more to follow. Perhaps this issue will finally be highlighted in the public sphere. It may be too optimistic to see justice but one never knows. But the continued attempt to harasses and suppress experiencers by certain groups will no longer be an easy task with this issue now in the public consciousness. More and more will feel safe and vindicated to come forward with their story. Those in power who've been intentionally kept in the dark about all this, will not be happy either.
Finally it comes to the issue on The Others, who they are and their intentions here. It is my opinion that the situation is highly complex and does not involve just one group. People are going to start looking to us for answers. I do think it best we be as calm collected and neutral about this as possible and not trigger major reactive fear based responses in people. This won't be easy though.
People may find themselves looking for material to link to friends and family about this topic beyond what they are just seeing in the news. Here is a recent podcast interview with an Experiencer that both covers this topic in a very grounded way and also covers raw and personal encounters so I do highly recommend this interview with Jay Christopher King. This is not on a ufology podcast so it serves well as a entry point to this topic and Jay represents experiencers very well in this interview.
As Experiencers we are veterans of ontological shock. And most were historically left without community and help to deal with this shock. Very soon we may find ourselves in the strange position of being there for those that doubted us. And helping them through their own ontological shock as they come to terms with all this being real.
We have a very important part to play in the future.

2023.06.07 02:56 BlazedBeard95 Some minor Necromancer complaints

First post in the subreddit, been lurking in here a few days before my amazing buddy ended up gifting me the Ultimate edition. I have a lvl 50 Necromancer I've been grinding with since I had access to the game and I have been loving every minute of it! Necromancer is a blast to play...most of the time. There are some issues i have with the class that I strongly feel need to be addressed in future patches, and I decided to just post them in here for the fun of it. Feel free to have a civilized discussion with me about these opinions- well, as civilized as Redditors are able to be lol. Be warned, if you're a Necromancer player that hasn't experienced everything the class has to offer yet, I'd suggest not reading this as it might have some spoilers for you. Time to begin!
  1. Corpse Explosion Miasma: I've seen this complaint around YouTube, Twitter, and even this subreddit. The skill itself is great but the particle effects legitimately darken the screen. I get the idea behind it, but it's really intrusive visually. Especially because I play with my brother who has eye problems and he can barely see anything when the screen is mostly dark. I have to switch to default CE when we play which is making me miss out on crucial DPS. I'm running a Minion focused build fyi. Need them to just remove the darkening of the screen, or give players the option to disable visual impairments like that. Outlines don't help either.
  2. Minions: This is my biggest issue even when I'm playing solo. All of my minions run on a single brain cell and end up scattering all over the place against large hordes of enemies. No idea why Blizzard forgot to give Necromancers a macro that let's them control their minions and who they focus on, but it feels like a HUGE oversight. Losing out on strong DPS because I can't control them.
  3. Iron Golem Slam: They buffed Iron Golem and made it a pretty damn great Minion, but its slam skill is really inconsistent most of the time. Sometimes I'll use it and he either stands there and twiddle his little thumb, takes too long and completely misses his target, or straight up doesn't do it at all. It happens roughly 40% of the time and ends up being a complete waste. The bluffs they have him are really nice but now he needs to actually function correctly.
  4. Build viability: I cannot stress this enough how utterly frustrating it is to have online build discussions about Necromancer, only to constantly come across the notion that doing the minion sacrifice builds are the way to play Necromancer. The point of play a lord of the Undead is to have an army of the Undead, I don't play him to be the sequel to the Sorcerer. I hope the balancing team finds a way to buff Minions in a meaningful way without straight up destroying the other build. I don't like the concept of solo Necromancer but I dont want them to nerf its viability...too much lol. I will say though that the minion build I'm running feels really nice, and although it has much slower clears, I feel like a lord of the Undead; just as I should.
Overall I'm in love with the game and the class, but I feel like Necromancer will be in need of some QOL stuff sooner or later.

2023.06.06 22:57 Embarrassed_Race9642 My brief exposure to crypto, working in it, and how it drove me suicidal (THROWAWAY ACCOUNT)

Hi everyone! I've been a lurker here for a while, and I've been reading different stories about people who worked in crypto sharing their regrets and/or spiteful feelings here, so it encouraged me to share my own. I never really post or comment on reddit except in gaming subreddits for help, so this is a first! I hope I don't bore you to death, but I imagine it might feel a little nice venting it out.
In hindsight, I didn't realise this would be such a long, long read, so please forgive the wall of text. This is really really long, but I don't care; I just wanted to get it all out to actual people. Read it if you will.
Lemme get some key points outta the way so we don't start off on the wrong foot
· at the beginning, I was never really "pro" or "anti" crypto
· I didn't lose any money lol
· throughout the whole thing, I was crypto neutral
· I managed to stop the project before it launched
· please do not refer me to suicide hotlines, I'm already going through therapy
· I was ignorant about crypto at the beginning; but now I know, so please, no lectures!
· I haven't "made money" either; in fact, I put a stop to the thing my friends were working on.
· I don't think I'm very smart, in fact, I feel stupid and useless after this whole debacle
· This doesn't really have a happy or "bad" ending, so please don't expect a happy ending. Also, again, please, please refrain from "giving advice." Just hear this out, and that's it. Make fun of this or ridicule it or empathise with it, I don't care; just don't "give advice" or "reassure" or whatever. Have the decency to just read something like this and let it be. Thank you!!
About myself: I don't really have a background in tech, and most of this is rather confusing stuff (then and now). I'm actually never on social media or the internet too often. I'm a writer, musician, and artist (mostly writer and musician), and I've done administrative work, project management, and journalism work to get by. I'm currently studying my undergraduate degree. I'll go about this chronologically.
2021 Jan - Sep: one of my friends got into crypto. He's a programmer (and a good one at that). I observed from the sidelines, and he kept talking about how much money he's made by trading. The concept of it never made any sense to me, but I'm not a programmer and I trusted my friend, so I was like "well, good for you." I never really understood any of that trading hubbub either!
I never really paid attention to any of this stuff, I was usually out with my friends, working, making music, playing games, or just writing. I never even owned a twitter account until late 2021!
2021 Sep: My friend made a whole lot of money one day, and I was pleasantly surprised! This guy always had those chart things on his screen 24/7 (never closed) whenever we went to his house, so we were all like "what the heck, that's hard work, huh?" I was genuinely happy that he's gotten his big break, because I believed he deserved it. He's one of the most talented people I know. Turns out one of his friends ran this crypto project with all these strange buzzwords that I still couldn't quite understand and gave him some "airdrops" before the "governance" token things launched. Oh, this isn't the thing I worked for, by the way!
2021 Oct: I didn't know too much about crypto, but I got it's selling point (or, well, I was dumb enough to fall for it). At least according to them, it's internet money that you can send anywhere at any time that you "own" and no central authorities own whatsoever (now I know that this concept is just incredibly stupid, but bear with me). I mean, I wasn't really an anti-government nut (and I didn't really turn into one either), but my friend's adamant on it, so I was like "well, why not?" and put $1000 in — wired it to this exchange (hint: it's not FTX, Coinbase, or Binance). Long story short, I put some money into that "Sandbox" thing and made a good few hundred bucks when it went up. There wasn't any real reasoning other than "well, Sandbox is a game, and people must use it for things, right?"
Oh, also, sandbox did these giveaway things for some "alpha pass" where you play their game and post a screenshot on twitter and win one of these alpha pass NFTs that you can sell on the market. I lucked out, got one, immediately sold it — I made like $5000 reselling that thing at "floor price." I remember thinking "woah, these guys must really want to play this game," which was naive and stupid, I guess.
2021 Nov - 2022 March: I cashed that out (the exchange wires that money back into your bank account for you) and steered clear later, because the whole thing was too much for me, staring at those dumb charts watching lines go up and down. That was all the money I ever made from crypto. I used it to buy some much needed medical devices, a guitar, and.. well, a new mattress. I donated the remainder away. Every time I asked my programmer friends to explain something or the other, it's always handwaving to "DYOR!" Every source they pointed me to confused me even more, and now I know that's deliberate with these grifters.
2022 March - May: I was still in their group chat so I could see them talk about it every now and then. Sometimes I drop in my comments about real-world news. One day, my friends were talking about starting an actual business. This was something I had experience in, and as far as I've seen, anything tangible that anyone's ever done with crypto was usually with games. I've had this idea for a type of game that I really cherished, and one of my friends had experience as a game developer. It was a relatively simple idea.
Let me tell you though, I really loved this game subcategory. I'm even in a university society for it. It's been one of my lifelong dreams to see my idea come to life. So I pitched the idea in, cause why not? The subcategory was never done in crypto, so at least we'd have the advantage of novelty, I thought. They weren't really sure how to monetise it, so I said "why not monetise the characters?" It seemed reasonable at the time: the characters could act as access points to the game and anyone could buy new characters for like, what, 5 bucks? At least that's what I had in mind. They agreed, so I found a popular NFT project to pitch the idea for (since it made more sense to work under an organisation rather than going full indie into a space we had no reputation in yet).
At the time, my friends said making these characters NFTs would give people "real ownership" and be a way to "support digital artists by cutting out the middleman." I mean, as a writer and musician, that did appeal to me. I didn't really question much of it (and I know I should have, it should have been due diligence, that was careless on my part). I thought "maybe we could make these NFTs customisable, because that's what RPGs are about, right?" and we went ahead with that.
2022 April - June: Here's a reminder: I'm a social media hermit. I never get on it unless it's checking on someone on Facebook or Instagram (or messaging). I never had twitter until 2021! So, I've never heard of people like Molly White, Tante, David Gerard, Amy Castor, yada yada until around this time. One my friends showed me Dan Olson's "Line Goes Up." And man, what a watch that was. It confirmed my gut feelings about crypto, that this is all just... hollow, insane, crazy stuff. My heart sank after watching that video.
I remember googling "responses to Line Goes Up" because I was in denial back then, not because I "believed" in crypto but I just didn't want to admit I've wasted so much time and energy. And I remember how every single "response" was just... idiotic. At that point, I sent that video to that NFT organisation's discord and said "if we're all genuine about this, maybe we should watch this and try to improve ourselves." It was the whole sunk cost fallacy thing, I wanted to believe that I didn't waste my time being a complete dork.
But after a certain point, I just couldn't run away from it anymore. I told my friends "let's just switch to making a steam game, we haven't lost or earned any money yet." It was an idea that was doable with a steam game, like... all you had to do was just change the monetisation bit to having players spend 5 bucks buying it... on steam... lol. Ah, but my friends were like "no." They won't do it. They wanted to make NFTs, and I couldn't understand for the love of god why you would do that. It was my idea, they had never played a game like that in their lives, I was the only one with any exposure in that regard.
Also, I was the one making the art as well, like... the character sprites. I'd spent so much time drawing those character sprites, their features, etc. I spent some time making some music, and even some background lore that fit in with the other NFT project we were working under. I barely checked their stupid discord things or twitter posts since I was so busy actually drawing and writing stuff. This was a passion project for me, and I was focused on making the game. You have no idea how much I love these types of role-playing games (but I'm not going into detail as to what that is because I'm not so comfortable).
Little did my stupid ass realise that these things were a pyramid scheme, and I was right at the middle or bottom. Little did my naive ass realise that none of these people liked my idea or even cared; people like me doing actual stuff gave them legitimacy, so people like me were just... pawns, I guess. Being the idiot I was, I engaged with my real name and my real identity, because that's what honest people do when they're selling a fucking game they'd be proud of, right? What a mistake. And my friends who knew what this stuff is never stopped me from doing any of it while I naively put my name and reputation at the front. After watching line goes up and then reading more and more sources (and eventually stumbling across Buttcoin on reddit!) I reached the point of no return:
Crypto and blockchain were useless in all possible ways, they never made sense as a technology, they're filled with disgusting people with disgusting anarcho-capitalist ideals, and there will never be a point where the "blockchain" will ever find a use-case beyond grifting, speculating, gambling, and money laundering because that is inherent to this technology's design. It is irredeemable. NFTs were never about empowering artists like us and it could never even do that at all because the premise and technology are flawed to begin with!
That was my realisation over time after actually reading about this from critical sources (which, at the top of the hype, I thought wasn't even really there because I had bought into my programmer friends' narrative that this is just like the internet and "everybody is in.")
I only wish I realised it sooner.
2022 June - July: I vehemently begged my friends to stop. I didn't want to make or sell NFTs anymore after realising what it was. I didn't even want the money (and god knows I could use that money since it could pay off my father's debts, but not like this. Not by hurting other people who may just be in the same position as I am by "winning" or "doing really 'smart' stuff.")
No one listened. I was about to quit, until the NFT organisation we were working under announced a grant. I saw this as an opportunity to put a stop to my own friends making their own NFTs, and I grabbed it. I begged and pleaded them to apply for that grant, which they begrudgingly did. I applied for that grant thing and it got approved, and all my friends were really excited about it. They all agreed to not make NFTs anymore and just make a free-to-play game. We worded the grant that way too.
But it still didn't sit right with me personally. I agonised over it still. Sure, it's grant money now... but how did that bigger NFT organisation get that money? Obviously, by selling NFTs and collecting resale "royalties." I guess it didn't matter to my friends, but to me, that's blood money. None of them were writers or artists, by the way. They were just... tech people. Techbros, I guess.
Anyway, the grant thing works by having people vote for it, and you get as much money as the votes you get. Our idea was good and we actually had a skillset, so we got like a little over four digits, which is big to someone like me, at least!
But it still didn't sit right with me.
I agonised over it all the time, thinking about just how I had soiled and shat on my lifelong passion idea, and how my name was out there associated with these people.
I just couldn't stand it anymore. One day, I told my friends that I was fucking quitting (this was in the middle of the grant voting process, that thing dragged on for about a couple of weeks) if they didn't turn this into a steam game instead. They chose to just let me quit, take the project for themselves, and... uh, take the grant money.
My friends got me on voice call and kinda hounded me, saying "well we understand if you want to quit but damn that sucks, it's a lot of money, man. It's been my dream too to make a game like that ever since my childhood." That last line really struck home because it was something I could empathise with, but then I recognised it as just... them trying to justify making fat stacks lol. They never really felt that way, and I'll tell you why I think that in a bit.
Either way, I quit. I got out. I didn't even take any compensation money. I mean, why would I lie about it here under an anonymous throwaway account anyway? I have nothing to gain from it, not even "karma farming" since I'm throwing this account away lol. Just... I couldn't stand it anymore, man.
2022 July - September: I spent this time distancing from these people and this crowd. I grew depressed. I hadn't lost any money, but I wasted so much time. I was left feeling disillusioned about my friends. To them, I was overreacting, I was being a cunt, I was just being so difficult! I just was standing in their way of "making bread" and "hustling!"
I stopped going out or hanging out with my friends.
I stopped going to that uni society out of shame. They don't know about it but I just can't even see the game the same way anymore. I felt so ashamed.
I never played that game with my usual other friends who I used to play it with a long time back either. They don't know about any of this either, but I was just so ashamed and disgusted. It kind of feels traumatic.
I stopped writing and barely made any music. I picked up a new tablet and learned to draw in a new style, but eventually I stopped that too. I just didn't feel like it anymore.
I got burned out. I barely was able to hand in my assignments. I had stopped going to classes because I just couldn't bother getting out of bed and going out there into actual society again. I felt like I was a disgusting, naive piece of shit that would just stain otherwise normal people.
I spent my days agonising about the day someone found out that I made art for this dumb project, that I was out there passionately talking about this idea like a stupid nerdy dumbfuck, and that I am associated with it even though I quit. One of my other friends who quit with me said he'd provide testimony of my side of things, but that's not really comforting.
I mean, it's a fringe thing anyway, we barely made anything. My friends got the grant, and I spend every single day agonising over it. I mean, it's not direct "profits" from NFTs, but where'd that grant money come from in the first place, huh?
My worst fear was that they'd pocket it and not even make the game. And they did. I guess those other NFTbros really didn't notice it since a few thousand bucks is just spare change to these grifter overlords. Again, I never took any money from it.
I can only thank god that I stopped them from making their own NFTs though, otherwise I really couldn't live with myself.
Every single day, I keep checking my old discord account and twitter like I'm obsessed, out of fear. I honestly don't care if it's just me that gets fucked by association, but I don't want my existence to become a burden to my poor siblings and parents just by being associated with me. I don't want their reputations to go to the shitter. They're hardworking, honest people who don't waste their time on stupid things like I have. They don't deserve that, at least. It should be me that should suffer.
Everyday, I agonise over it.
I couldn't really cry or anything about it, I just felt hollow, I guess. I've lost interest in most of the things I loved. Sometimes I play games, sometimes I scribble for the fucks of it, sometimes I read, sometimes I write in my notebook, but that's it. I had stopped going out, and I hadn't seen anyone for a long while.
2022 September - 2022 November: I bought a rope and a pull-up bar. I continually kept writing in my journal to prepare a good, coherent suicide note instead of, like... writing it all incoherently at the last minute and then peacing out lol. The pull-up bar is because my dorm doesn't really have any places I could hang my rope from, so if I attach the pull-up bar to the door, I could tie the rope onto it and hang.
The other way I thought of doing it was heroin, because apparently it just quietly puts you to sleep; but I'm scared of needles and I don't want to buy anything on the dark web. I've never done hard drugs like that anyway.
I kept procrastinating it. Partly because I had grown too lazy to even learn how to tie a hangman's knot, and partly because I was still afraid. The thing is, I've already been diagnosed with a mental health issue that also causes depression for nearly a decade now. This, though, was the worst I ever felt. The part that sucks the most is that the game idea was a passion project for me. It was something I've always dreamed of doing. It was the sort of games I really, really loved. It was the sort of art I loved making and seeing too. It was the kind of music I had fun composing. The story idea was something from my own long-held ideas that I wanted to bring to life, and now that's in the shitter too.
On some days, I woke up with absolute certainty of what I was going to do: learn to tie that knot, hang it up, and be done with it. I got distracted, and eventually I'd forget and doze off again. I spend most of my time chatting online with some of my friends (via text), which was something I rarely ever did a few years ago. I was more known for rarely responding to texts because I was outside so frequently lol.
I decided to see everyone for one last time before I did it, so I waited to get back to my own home country first. I wanted to just see everyone and sort of hang out with them as an unspoken farewell thing before I did it.
2022 December: I went back home, I hung out with my friends and family, and I was my usual self. I don't think anyone really caught on. We all made plans to go places and do stuff, and we did. It was a nice little time with everyone. I even kind of felt like myself again. I went swimming, went to friends' houses, met up with old friends, etc. I even put up a local art page and dropped some of my writings, music, and art on there.
2023 January: It was almost time to go back, but I went on a vacation to this country with a friend by ourselves. We ate local food at the stalls and just backpacked on a budget. We went hiking and sightseeing. We went to night markets, canoed in a river, and went camping in the woods. I actually finished one of my assignments on a train ride to this city. We did so many things, but I don't want to go off on a tangent. That experience made me forget these feelings for a while. It meant a lot to me, but I'll keep it at that for this subreddit.
2023 Late January - Now: I went back, these feelings returned. I've spiralled back into agonising now, but I'm seeing a therapist and a university counsellor now. It hasn't gotten as bad as it was in September last year, and especially now I feel reluctant to do it because one of them told me "your death doesn't happen to you, it happens to the people around you."
I'm kind of just picking myself up from here, trying to forget this ever happened, and working in other industries I used to work in back then. But I know that as soon as anyone finds out I was associated with any of this, I will get rid of myself. At the very least, my family would be spared then, and I wouldn't be such a burden, no matter what my therapist says.
I'm more or less just empty and neutral now. I haven't really done anything other than just study, go to classes, and do my assignments. My daily activities consist of eating, shitting, pissing, sleeping, and repeat. If someone from 3 years ago saw me now, they'd think I'm an entirely different person.
One day I'll move on, make peace with myself, and forget about it. That's what I hope for, at least. I'm at least thankful that I've been able to stop my friends from actually making NFTs or a crypto coin and actually hurting people. I'm just glad. I don't know or care what they're up to now. I couldn't be arsed anymore.
I saw people share their stories, and I felt like doing that myself too. It turned out longer than I expected, but I didn't want to leave anyone hanging, lol, so I wrote about everything from start to finish. Sorry if that turned out to be way too long. Thanks for taking your time getting this far if you have.
I hope no one else has agonised or will have to agonise the way I have.

2023.06.06 19:31 NamelessNanashi [The Gods of Dragons: Beginning] Ch 18 - A Name

--- Table of Contents ---
Winter 4986, 22 Aoimoth
They never locked the door. She checked the handle just in case. Did they honestly expect Her to stay in this white room forever without locking Her in? She opened the door just a crack and peeked out. No one.
The Cleric coughed. She closed the door quickly and pretended to examine the altar of Hengist on a nearby shelf, Her neck itching. The kindly man finished straightening his papers, slipping them into a desk drawer and locking it. So they locked their documents away but not the door? Or did they think he alone would be enough to stop Her if She chose to go out?
She watched the Cleric out of the corner of Her eye as he stood and stretched, but looked quickly to the altar again when he walked Her way. He stopped beside Her, bringing his hands up in a short prayer. He seemed nice enough, and She found Herself wanting to trust him. But Archmage Morndancer had moments when he was nice too.
She scratched the scales on Her neck, still unaccustomed to having unimpeded access to the area. The collar had become so much a part of Her that She felt awkward without it, never mind that it had been used to keep Her in line. She wondered again how these Paladins planned on keeping Her under control and debated different ways to find out without going so far that She would end up tied to one of these beds and stuck full of needles.
“Do you pray, Miss?” the Cleric asked, eyes still closed.
She shrugged, “I don’t really like one-sided conversations.” She glanced at him, half hoping he would get angry, maybe punish Her just a little, so She would have a better idea what methods they might use.
He laughed, “Yes, I remember occasions, before I took my Oath, when I wondered if Hengist could hear me.” he reached down and held Her shoulder for a moment, as long as his heat tolerance would allow, before letting his hand fall back to his side, “It's hard to take the word of others sometimes, but I know he’s listening. He delivered you from the Warlocks...” he let the idea trail as if he expected Her to thank the god for his intervention. But if Hengist had really wanted Her free, then why not come sooner? Why not when they had isolated Her? Even just an hour sooner would have saved Her treasures…
“Perhaps, when you’re ready, I will take you to the chapel.” he continued to smile, “Or perhaps you will find a greater calling to one of the other gods,” the Cleric shrugged, “We are not ones to proselytize.” She could only return his shrug.
She moved back to the window, Her favorite place in the infirmary. Below, a group of boys, young men really, practiced with weapons too small for Her to see. One stood apart from the others and She wondered what he'd done to be ostracized from the rest. She hadn’t met any of them yet and wondered if they were being kept from Her intentionally. She'd met with the Major General, Selibra, as well as another high-ranking Paladin, a woman, and a handful of Mages. Seeing the Mages, She'd been sure they were about to take Her to another tower, to lock Her in the basement again. They'd assured Her that wasn’t the case, and explained the difference between Her Mages -Warlocks- and true Mages -Guild members- though She still had a hard time believing them.
She wasn’t afraid. She'd gone past fear. There wasn’t anything more they could take from Her that the Warlocks hadn’t already taken. Instead, She was curious, what would they do? And how would She work around it?
Behind Her, the Cleric cleared his throat, “I’m going to the chapel,” She nodded without looking at him. Brom and Ran would leave Her alone for most of the day. This was a new place, but some things would always be the same. The door opened, then clicked closed again.
She stood at the window for a while longer before turning around and tilting Her head at the door. He hadn’t locked it… It must have been a mistake. She moved for the door and cracked it open just in case… The hall beyond was empty.
She looked back into the room with all its white, then back into the hall. Well... She'd wanted to test Her limits. She slipped out of the infirmary.
No one stopped Her, and nothing happened. She walked slowly at first, glancing at each door as though She expected it to swing open and reveal one of the Mages, fingers ready to snap. In the distance, a set of Paladins rounded a corner, and She froze. They spoke to each other, one laughing at something the other said. She glanced around for somewhere to hide before remembering that this was exactly what She'd wanted. If they saw Her out of Her room, they would undoubtedly take Her back, and if She resisted, they would have to play their hand. She just hoped the friendly Cleric wouldn’t get in too much trouble for forgetting to lock the door.
The Paladins' steps faltered when they noticed Her. Exchanging glances, one stepped forward, “Are you lost, miss?”
“No,” She answered, looking over Her shoulder. For a heartbeat She expected Brom to be there. He wasn’t. He never would be again. She forced the thought away. Locking it somewhere it couldn’t interrupt Her exploration, focusing on the Paladins.
The knight exchanged another look with his companion, who shrugged, “Well, if you need any help, please don’t hesitate to ask.” they continued past Her.
Turning to watch them go, She tilted Her head to one side, then the other. Slowly, a grin began to spread over Her face. With a wicked giggle, She set off down the hall, ready to explore until someone stopped Her.
***
Shon stood well away from the others, his dagger clenched too tightly in his left hand. The first day back, Master Daunas had tried to include him in training as if nothing had changed. Then Shon had frozen the practice grounds, and no less than ten of the sixteen squires had fallen on their backsides, letting slip a variety of colorful curses that had them all doing pushups in full armor for at least five minutes straight. After that, he had been ordered to do drills alone while the others practiced. “Just until Ivelm finishes your item,” Master Daunas had assured him.
The little dragon that now followed Shon everywhere, whistled from the roof covering the weapons racks. Shon tried to loosen his grip on his dagger. He was getting sloppy, focusing too much on not extending the blade with an extra three inches of ice and not enough on the precision of his strikes. He tried to keep the power pulled in, but it made him tense, and he often found himself holding his breath unintentionally. Getting frustrated only made it worse. Instead of fighting his visualized opponent, he felt like he was fighting himself. And losing.
The pseudodragon swooped down and landed on Shon's extended arm, distracting him further. Growling, Shon tried to shoo it away, shaking his arm but only causing the tiny beast to dig its sharp claws deeper. "Not now," he hissed at the dragon, who hissed back, sending a wave of annoyance into Shon's mind to join his own. It walked up his arm to his shoulder, wrapping its tail around his neck to help keep itself balanced as Shon continued to try and finish his form.
He'd been confused but intrigued by the flying cat-like lizard on the night it had shown itself, but was quickly finding the thing to be as annoying as the Sorcerer magic it represented.
On the first day he'd resumed training, the little dragon had attached itself to his shoulder, as it did now, and wouldn't get off no matter how in the way it got. He'd asked, threatened, and begged, but at most, it would move from one shoulder to the other.
On the second day, he'd ordered it to stay in his room, closing the door quickly before it could slip out. Shon had been pulled out of drills for the first time since his arrival to clean and reclean his trashed room after the pseudodragon had dug through his uniform box and desk drawers.
On the third day, he had to physically resist the urge to grab the thing by the neck and throw it across the courtyard. Though to his surprise -and annoyance- Master Daunas had actually stepped in. Speaking to the pseudodragon kindly but firmly, the Weaponmaster ordered it to leave him alone during lessons at least. And for the most part, it obeyed. The fact that it was pestering him now meant the lesson had to be almost...
The bell for their break rang out from the tower high above the fortress. Shon snapped to attention with the others, the little dragon twittering happily and swaying with the motion. When dismissed, he was the first to return his dagger, then cleared off to give the others room to do the same.
No one said anything when he went to the water barrel instead of the fortress. His friends were still mostly supportive, but even they were growing annoyed by his occasional loss of control. Like freezing the running trail, so on the next pass, they had to dodge icy footprints.
Breaking the thin layer of ice that had formed over the top of the water barrel and splashing the back of his neck with it, Shon stared at his wavering reflection until the water stilled. Cold blue eyes stared back until the little dragon stuck its head in the way, smacking Shon's nose with its wing. He slapped the water, sending it splashing up into the pseudodragon's nose. The little dragon hissed, then scooped up a huge wing-full and splashed it over his face and chest. He could feel the little dragon's mirth as it chortled its clicking laugh.
Shon could only sigh, he'd come to cool off out of habit, not necessity. He didn't really feel hot in the same way as before. The exercise and exertion still made him sweat, but he only seemed to grow colder. Like even his body was acting out of habit...
He waited for the others to finish crowding into the fortress, most heading to the showers, some heading for their rooms, and a few to the library to play cards and socialize. Shon glanced towards the weapons storage -with the boxes of daggers and racks of various swords and polearms- but shook his head. He was in no mood to continue the fight with himself, and instead made for his rooms.
Squires laughed in the halls, and Shon stayed close to the wall to give them space as he walked. The pseudodragon draped itself over his shoulder like a scarf so it wouldn't hit the stone or passers-by. Apparently, sometimes, it was conscientious of Shon's desires. Once in his room, Shon retrieved his journal and opened it on the desk, but then focused out the window without sitting down. In early winter, the sun was already setting, painting the skies in colors he could never hope to match with simple pencils and white paper. He normally enjoyed this time of year, when the wind grew chill and snow occasionally fell as a promise for the deeper winter to come.
Now, he wanted to hate the cold. He wanted to toss it and everything like it to the wind. But not only could he not rid Clearhelm of winter, he also couldn’t convince himself to hate it. The little dragon sent a wave of concern over him, whistling quietly.
Closing his journal Shon scooped it up and left. Even if he opened the window, not much of a breeze would reach him from there, so he made for the stairs to the central tower.
Though now the tower was used only to house the hour bells, it was originally designed to be a lookout. It offered a complete view of the surrounding area through ten tall glassless windows around the perimeter.
He picked a window ledge facing west and sat with his journal closed, just enjoying the cool breeze. The knots in his stomach eased, and the power he could still feel swirling around him calmed. The pseudodragon purred, and he reached up to pet its side. It was okay to still enjoy the cold, wasn’t it? He just wished he didn’t inflict it on others who never seemed to like it as much as he did.
Someone hummed behind him, and Shon jumped, spinning in his seat. A girl with golden hair stepped up to his window. Her eyes were closed, and the wind blew her hair back, revealing three scarlet stripes across her right cheek. They merged together on her neck into a single line that disappeared below her white hospital dress.
She smiled, and Shon had to swallow, his mouth suddenly dry, “I was sure they wouldn’t let me up here,” she said, opening her eyes and looking at him, still smiling, “But I suppose if you’re up here, then I can come and enjoy the view too.” She perched herself on the sill next to him and tilted her head to the side, looking for all the world like a curious kitten. The pseudodragon mirrored the expression with an inquisitive chirp. Were her pupils slitted? "You have a pseudodragon... are you a Mage?" She asked.
Shon looked away, but the little dragon wrapped its tail around his neck and chirped again, "I'm a Squire," he stated, though if more to himself or the girl, he wasn't sure.
"Oh, so you're here to be a Paladin?" she accepted his answer without argument, and Shon looked her way again to find her still smiling, "I don't understand the appeal, but if it makes you happy," she shrugged, but then narrowed her eyes at him, leaning closer and squinting. Shon leaned back, keeping his distance. “Your eyes... You were there, weren’t you? At the tower?”
Shon blinked. She'd switched topics so suddenly. He nodded in answer, and she sighed, turning in her seat and bringing her knees up to her chest. She was probably annoyed he hadn't answered verbally...
As she wrapped her arms around her legs, he saw that her red stripe continued out her left sleeve to break apart into three again along the back of her hand. Looking down, he noticed three more pointed stripes on her bare right foot that merged at her ankle to twist around and disappear back into her dress. Did they all meet somewhere in the middle? He had to shake himself to banish the mental image and turned to follow her gaze out over the horizon.
“Thank you…” she whispered, and he turned back to her, arching an eyebrow. It took her a moment to look away from the view and see his expression, but when she did, she continued without further prompting, “I don’t remember everything that happened, but I’m glad I wasn’t alone,” she smirked and looked back out to the horizon, continuing, “The Cleric thinks I should thank Hengist, but I don’t remember seeing him there, so I’d rather thank you instead.” Shon didn’t know what to think about that, but the girl didn’t seem to expect an answer.
The pseudodragon dug its claws into Shon's shirt and climbed down his chest, pulling at the fabric and scratching the skin beneath. It walked across his legs then over to the girl gingerly. Her giggle was small and quiet, and she didn't hesitate to reach out and pet the flying lizard, though she did so carefully with brief pats, "Careful little one, I'm not the safest person to touch..." she whispered down to it. Shon furrowed his brow in confusion at her words, and predictably the pseudodragon ignored them completely. Crawling up her knees until she lowered them again so it could reach her lap, where curled up like a cat, complete with purring.
She giggled again and stroked its back all the way down to its tail, "It doesn't even care..." she sounded in awe of the little dragon, and Shon couldn't blame her. He'd only ever heard stories of the beasties before he'd seen this one. But the dragon wasn't nearly as interesting anymore, not compared to this girl.
“What’s your name?” he blurted before thinking. And silently cursed himself into oblivion. He sounded like an idiot. Those were the first words he said? She was obviously content just petting the pseudodragon. Couldn’t he have at least waited for her to address him? Or ask something? She was probably up here to think. You have no idea what she’s been through; she probably wants to be alone…
But hadn’t she chosen to sit next to him? And she'd already spoken first...
As if to confirm his fears, she sighed in obvious annoyance, her head falling back to hit the side of the pillar with a whine. When she looked at him, he could somehow tell that if she was annoyed, it was with herself, “I know I should know it by now, but I don’t. Do you think I’m going to have to explain every time I meet someone new? It’s really embarrassing…”
Shon could only stare, trying to understand. She didn’t say she couldn’t remember her name, just that she didn’t ‘know’ it yet. But that didn't make any sense. “You don’t have a name?” he tried to confirm.
She shrugged, exaggerating the motion by bringing her shoulders all the way to her ears then letting them drop limply, “They always said that I would know my own name. But every time I tried to guess or make one up, they got mad at me. What’s your name?”
“Shon,” he answered slowly, still confused.
“And when did you know your name?” she tilted her head again, confirming Shon’s mental comparison with a kitten.
He shook his head, “No one just knows their name. They're given one when they’re babies.”
Her mouth fell open for a full heartbeat before it snapped shut again, and she glared into the setting sun. The air had grown strangely warm, the pseudodragon chittered, and Shon fumbled for something to say, “What did they call you if you don’t have a name?” She'd said 'they' had told her she would know her own name, so that must mean 'they' had spoken to her. He could only assume she meant the people at the tower. The memory of burned corpses flashed through his mind, and once again Shon regretted speaking.
She didn’t look at him as she answered, “Ran called me ‘Red,’ for my scales,” she ran the fingers of her right hand over the stripes on her left, “Brom called me ‘Goldy,’ for my hair,” she brought a lock over her shoulder and stroked it absently, “But the Archmages didn’t like it when they did that…” the pseudodragon watched her dangling hair, swaying its neck back and forth to follow its motion.
Those sounded like nicknames someone gave a pet… He remembered Ivelm saying something about her being experimented on, like an animal. Shon brought his hand up to run through his hair, thinking fast. “You could pick one.” she looked at him, and he rushed to continue, “No one can stop you, and it could be temporary, just until you know your true name." whatever that meant, "Even the gods used to have different names depending on the province.”
“A name,” her eyes glazed over as she stared into the setting sun and absently started petting the dragon again. It tilted its head up at her and whistled, “I don’t even know where to start…” she whispered.
Shon searched the horizon for inspiration but saw only trees and birds. “What’s your favorite flower?” he blurted.
She focused on him again, “Flowers have names?” she asked. When he nodded, her cheeks puffed out, and she glared at him. Looking away again, she grumbled, “Even flowers get names, and I just have to sit around and wait for one to come to me?”
Shon opened his journal, turning it to the side and drawing quickly. The girl stopped mumbling to herself and looked over his shoulder, the pseudodragon crawling to the edge of her knees so it too could tilt its head at his drawing. He usually hated when people tried to watch him draw, but -for some reason- was able to continue without being distracted. It was a drawing for her after all, it made sense that she should see it. Never mind that she was so close... close enough for him to feel the warmth from her skin... or perhaps that was his imagination.
Finishing the final flower, Shon turned the book towards her. “Which one do you like most?”
She stared transfixed at the six flowers depicted, and Shon suddenly felt self-conscious. He'd only personally seen four of them, the other two he'd copied from memories of other drawings in books. She reached out, and her fingers hovered over the rose for a moment before she rested it on a six-petaled lily. The little dragon trilled in approval.
“Lily,” Shon said, then tried to explain, “I trained with a girl named Daisy,” he tapped the daisy flower on the page, “Daisies were also her favorite flower, so I thought…”
“It’s so beautiful…” she whispered, then grabbed his hand, desperately searching his face, “Can I really use it as a name?”
Shon’s heart skipped a beat. Her hand was hot, and he felt his power flow to where she touched, cooling his skin and making it tingle. Even before his power had awakened, everyone else had gotten colder the longer he touched them. As if he were pulling the warmth from them.
Her heat seemed unending.
Even more transfixing was the desperation in her eyes, which were dark blue and slit, like the pseudodragon's, who had crawled from her lap onto his journal and was studying the other flowers. Finally, Shon managed a nod, adding, “You can have whatever name you want. It’s yours.”
She looked at the flowers again and whispered, “Lily…” she seemed to chew it over for a moment, then smiled. And Shon realized all those before hadn't been in true happiness. This was her first real smile. “Lily.” her joy lit up the darkening sky and caused Shon’s heart to race, making up for its lost beats, “My name is Lily!” Lily pulled his hand closer to her and gripped it with both of hers, “Thank you. Oh wow, thank you, Shon!”
He could bask in that smile for hours. He stared at her, trying to memorize every line. Then she finally looked down at his fingers, and her brow furrowed. Oh no…
“It doesn’t hurt?” she asked.
Shon pulled away from her, looking away so he wouldn’t have to see her rub her palms on her dress, “No.” he answered shortly. She'd held his hand longer than anyone even before his awakening, but she'd been distracted by picking her name. She was probably freezing now…
He didn’t want to see her trying to warm her fingers after holding his, so instead, he focused on his journal, pushing the pseudodragon gently off so it wouldn't scratch the papers, then slowly working the page with the flowers out of it.
The breeze picked up, and Shon ran his hand through his hair, stealing a glance Lily's way. Her eyes were closed and she'd turned to face the wind again, “Refreshing…” she whispered.
He sighed. He could still feel her hands wrapped around his, a phantom memory he would just have to hope would last. Shon held out the drawings to her. She blinked at them, then at him, then back down to the page again. “You can have it,” he told her.
Lily hugged him.
Shon stiffened instantly. He'd never been hugged like this before. She smelled like cinnamon… Before he could fully register the sensation, Lily pulled away and took the page carefully with just her fingertips, “I will treasure it…” Shon felt himself blush, looking away to try and hide his face. Luckily Lily didn't seem to notice because she asked, "What's its name?"
Shon turned to look at her questioningly, only to see her tilting her head down at the pseudodragon. Shon's blush deepened. She was so happy to have a name, and now he had to tell her, "It doesn't have..." shame burned his cheeks, and he actually flinched when she looked at him in shock.
"You're not going to make it come up with its own, are you?"
"I... I just haven't..." Shon stuttered around for an excuse, but he really didn't have one, "I didn't think about it..." he finally finished, defeated.
He expected Lily to get upset, maybe chastise him, but instead, she just clapped her hands and smiled, "Well, we can fix that now." reaching down, she scratched the little dragon's chin, "Any ideas?" the pseudodragon purred, then climbed back over to her lap, wrapping its long tail around Lily's forearm so she couldn't pull away from the scratches.
"Pest," Shon mumbled.
Lily giggled, "That's not a name," she tried to stop scratching only to have it reach up and grab her fingers, forcing it back to its chin with both clawed hands. She giggled again, "Could be a nickname, though." the little dragon huffed but still wouldn't let her stop petting it.
"Pest..." Shon told it directly. Feeling jealous; the realization almost made him blush again. He was doing an awful lot of that all of a sudden.
"Well, it's a tiny dragon..." Lily mused, "So maybe something in draconic?"
Shon arched an eyebrow at her, but Lily just tilted her head at his unspoken question. "Draconic? Isn't that a dead language?" dead with the dragons who spoke it, he asked.
"You mean you don't speak it?" she answered with her own questions, "How do you read books written in it if you can't speak it?"
Shon shook his head, "I don't know of any books written in draconic..." he was becoming more confused by Lily every moment. The provinces all had their own ancient languages, but learning it these days was only an old tradition. No one actually used it. And yet the ones who'd held her, the ones who hadn't given her a name, had taught her a second language? A dead language?
"That's so weird..." Lily said, looking back out over the horizon. Just when Shon was sure she wasn't going to say anything else, she hopped a little in her seat, shaking the pseudodragon in her lap, "What about Ryuuko?"
Once again, Shon's eyebrow went up and Lily explained with a giggle, "It means 'little dragon.' Not very creative, I know, but if it likes it..." she dipped her head, lifting the pseudodragon's face to her nose, "Do you like it, little one? It's a bit feminine with the 'ko' at the end, but..." the little dragon licked her nose and Shon felt a wave of approval from the creature.
"I think it likes it." He told Lily as she laughed, pulling the pseudodragon in for a real hug, rubbing her cheek along its scaled neck.
Around them the bells sounded at full volume. Shon and Lily covered their ears, and Ryuuko took off, flying in circles around the bell tower, chittering angrily at being surprised. Lily laughed, but Shon could only hear the resonating rings shaking him from his head to his toes as the bells counted out the hour.
When the last bell faded, Lily dropped her hands, her laugh turning to a snicker, “I suppose that means it’s dinner time.” her smile faded, disappearing over the course of a few heartbeats, “I should probably get back to my room…” she clutched the page Shon had given her to her chest as if afraid it would be snatched from her fingers.
Ryuuko landed on Shon's shoulder as he stood, and Lily slowly lowered her feet back to the ground as if heading towards a hangman’s noose. It had been at least six days since the incident that brought her to Hamerfoss. Had she been eating in the infirmary all this time?
Shon arched an eyebrow at her, and Lily met his expression with a confused tilt of her head again. Shon asked, “Come to dinner with us?” and Lily’s smile lit up the night.

2023.06.06 05:54 suprem_lux A.I dominance then what ?

Hey guys, I'm interested in hearing people's thoughts on what lies ahead.
Typically, when something new emerges, it gains momentum rapidly and creates a bit of chaos before eventually stabilizing and finding its place. Since ChatGPT was released, things seem to be slowing down a bit. We're witnessing more and more duplication of ChatGPT and AI art algorithms, etc, nothing ultra new under the radar. We're "in".
Sooo regardless of which side you're on, whether you're pro or against AI, there's no denying that the digital job landscape has undergone rapid changes. It makes me wonder: if we significantly reduce the digital workforce, which has been booming for the past two decades, and considering the scarcity of "real-life" jobs, what will be left? Personally, I foresee governments worldwide stepping in sooner or later and taking one of two approaches:
  1. Implementing unprecedented regulations to tightly control AI.
  2. Introducing Universal Basic Income as quickly as possible.
Given the current state of our modern world and how economics function, it's difficult to see how humans would remain eligible for traditional salaries or just doing jobs. It feels like we heading towards a future where only a handful of major corporations or businesses with very few employees are responsible for everything, replacing a large portion of the workforce.
I was browsing through the development side of Twitter recently, and it's bloodbath out there, it's quite challenging for freelancers or contract-based developers. Even employees at prominent development companies are experiencing layoffs here and there because, regardless of how impressive AI is, the replacement process is already underway.
So yeah, curious to hear what are your thoughts on what's next

2023.06.05 06:52 oobanooba- Venlil Metal Ch.3 - Backbone

Hehey Im back again! Putting these out a lot faster than I expected, Don't expect me to keep posting so fast, I'll end up slowing down sooner or later and these take a long time for me to write thanks to the fact that I am pretty new to this whole thing.
ANYWAY more Colton/Anaw Interaction! They should kiss!
Thanks, u/SpacePaladin15 for the universe And u/VeryUnluckyDice for implanting a tumor into my brain.also thanks to u/Thirsha_42 for proofreading, seriously.

“C-can you show me?.. Your Human music?” asked Anaw.
What? This little Venlil wants to listen to my music. I listen to metal. Like Meshuggah or Gojira and shit. If I showed them that he might actually die. He seems nice enough but I don’t think this is a good idea. But it doesn't matter anyway. There is no way Captain non-regulation fluff would let me even get close to my guitar and I can't prove a guitar is an instrument without well… a guitar?
I simply responded “No”
Anaw was obviously scared of me, so a simple no should be enough to keep them away. Anaw didn't seem surprised at that answer, and against my expectations took another, shaky, step forward.
“Why?”
That question, One word, is the most important question In history. It's the question every kid grows up asking. ‘Clean your room’ ‘Why?’ ‘Look both ways before crossing’ ‘Why?’ ‘ One plus one is two.’ ‘why?’ it’s the question that you ask incessantly, everywhere, everything. ‘Why?’ because for everything there is always an explanation, a reason, and when there isn’t you just haven't found the right tools. It's a fact of the universe that to develop the science needed to explore it, a species must have the desire to ask ‘Why?’ It's a question you learn to stop asking. People hate explaining why they do anything, lest they realise their reason is stupid.
“It's late for me this paw. I'm supposed to be asleep about half a claw ago and I have work after,” I replied.
Anaw looked up at me with both eyes and tried making them really big and cute.
Puppy dog eyes work a lot better when you have front-facing eyes. It's kind of scary actually.
I sigh and continue. “But, come visit me after work and I'll see if I can show you something. Have you got your pad?”
That seemed to satisfy the venlil, their ears perked up a little. They quickly pulled their pad out of the carry pouch that they were wearing. I took the time to do the same. I pulled up my information and allowed Anaw to fill it into their pad. After the exchange was completed I said goodbye, put my headphones back on, and began making my way to the nearest tube station.
My resolve renewed, I had found my ‘why?’ even if it is small. Sharing music with venlil was a reason to keep trying and that is enough.
Nothing that exterminator dirtbag can do will beat me down. I will get my guitar back. It's only a matter of time before I have a how.
I press play on my pad
—--
There was plenty of room for me on the tube. There always is.
These venlil are so nice. Always giving up their seats for the predators.
I got a notification on my pad, It was from Bleat, Which is basically the venlil version of Twitter, I really only installed it because I was curious about what venlil even thought of humans. It was unsurprisingly just as hostile as Twitter.
Seems the concept of predator disease no longer applies when you’re online.
I opened up the app and saw it was a herd request from Anaw. I accepted it and their name moved to my herd list.
My herd is now one person. Incredible! I must be the talk of the town.
I took some time to look at Anaws profile. Might be helpful to get an idea of the kind of person they are.
Anaw: venlil male aged 18. “my black wool is natural, ladies”
His profile also included a picture of him and what seemed to be his friend group pulling some crazy poses and then some other information like that he worked as a waiter at a small restaurant. His profile was jarringly normal, he hangs out with friends, studies electronic engineering, and takes care of his grandparents. If it wasn't for the fact that Anaw was an alien, the profile wouldn't have looked out of place on Twitter before first contact. But now no human really has a life like that anymore.
I swiped back to my profile, still entirely blank.
I tapped the edit profile button and stared at the blank fields.
After everything. I don't know anymore.
I switched off my pad.
—-
I made it to my apartment. It was surprisingly cheap for its size, the real estate agent cited some sort of previous ‘predator infestation’ as the reason. Honestly, I didn't really care, it just means I got a nice place for much cheaper than it had any right to be. I undressed and prepared to sleep. As l lay in bed I stared at the empty stand where my guitar used to be. The empty space taunted me, preventing me from getting to sleep.
I opened up my pad again, still on the edit profile page. I tapped the description.
‘The wiggles are metal AF’
Why be edgy and sad when you can have a bit of humor? I refuse to wallow in sorrows if I have any other choice.
I continued to fill out my profile with a photo of me, masked obviously, and some other basic details. And then I was finally exhausted enough to get to sleep.

My morning routine was spent wondering how I could convince the exterminators that my guitar was, in fact, an instrument.
The obvious answer is just to show a video but I can't really show any videos, I'm pretty sure most human media is censored fairly heavily. I doubt the exterminators trust the human media either. They won’t let me actually use my guitar to show them it's an instrument, so that's off the table.
Maybe Anaw is the key here? He is a venlil so maybe he could help. Even if he can’t, it wouldn’t hurt to at least have one of the fluffy guys on my side. I really need a friend right about now anyway. All my human friends are at the shelter and that's all the way in the city.
What sort of music do I show Anaw anyway, something soft right? Metal would be too ‘predatory’ or maybe I’m making assumptions.
By the time I had come out of my thoughts, I was already at work. My job was in a fruit warehouse on the outskirts of Deep Lake at the edge of the agricultural zone. It was a very simple job, simply to separate the deformed fruits from the normal-looking ones. I have no idea why the job posting specifically requested a human but my guess was that because I was a ‘predator’ my boss assumed that I wouldn't be snacking on any fruits. I guess she didn't realize that humans are perfectly capable and willing to eat fruits and nuts. It paid well enough and it was easy enough that it gave me time to think; so really I didn't mind.
—-
Once the work claw was over, I got a notification from my pad. I opened up the message to find that Anaw had sent a message asking me to meet up at the place he worked. ‘Cafe 5 claws’.
Interesting. I'm actually pretty excited. I've finally have the opportunity to make friends with a venlil, it's kind of sad that I haven't even really tried, but neither have the venlil.

We are firmly of the belief that the current market cap is more than covered by the legacy investments that Cadence holds in various new technology metal companies and projects and that the addition of the Amapá stake to its portfolio can only be value enhancing. --- Table of Contents ---
--- Part 1/2 ---
When Shon woke again, it was to be told he'd slept, not only the rest of the day and night of the incident, but the entire day after as well. Despite the Cleric assuring Shon that this was normal, he still had Shon eat breakfast in the infirmary while the Squires attended their morning lessons. He'd slept through drills, breakfast, and prayer.
The Cleric kept the curtains drawn over the window, though Shon's head wasn't pounding anymore, and had added a second set of standing curtains around the girl's bed. Shon's eyes flicked in her direction with every alternate bite he managed to force down, but there was no movement beyond the white cloth.
Master Daunas came in shortly before tenth bell and armor practice to inform Shon that he was to take the day off to rest but could rejoin the others in training the following day. He was at least allowed to leave the infirmary, though he waited until he could hear sparring outside before he did. He didn't want to run into any of the Squires.
As he opened the door to leave something flew by the window, catching Shon's attention enough to make him stop and look over. But it was already long gone. Just a bird... Assuming he hadn't imagined it. He shook his head, still aching all over. His mind swam with worries and memories, made worse by the fact that the Cleric was trying to hide shivers now that Shon was fully rested. He'd probably just imagined it...
Back in his room Shon huddled over his journal. He could still smell the smoke in his hair and had decided it would be best to shower soon, but finally alone, his thoughts and memories could no longer be ignored.
So he drew. He tried to start safe. Nangran atop his borrowed horse; Ivelm mostly naked and shaking a club in his doorway; the Archmage's workroom lined in shelves filled with magical components. That one had taken a while. But as he released these images onto the page, others forced themselves forward. Smoke billowing over treetops; a burning tower; charred bodies; and a girl reaching out through the flames. A girl lying asleep in the bed next to his. The stillness of the picture made her look dead.
He dropped his pencil, letting it roll right off the desk. Crossing his arms over the book, he rested his head on his desk. The wood felt warm compared to his skin, comforting. What more could he have done? What could a Paladin have done? Or Master Veon-Zih? Shon saw again the bodies and shivered.
No one could save everyone. To think otherwise was pure arrogance. But knowing the facts and feeling them were two very different things. The tower wasn’t that far from Hamerfoss. Shouldn’t they have known something was going on? Shouldn’t they have been able to do something sooner? Years sooner? Long before the fire killed those people?
A loud tapping startled him awake. When had he fallen asleep? Shon searched his room in confusion, trying to piece together his dream and what had awoken him. He'd been in the Temple chapel, but as he'd walked down the middle aisle, the pews had started to decay, the stone walls crumbling. Small plants, then trees began to sprout from the ground, overgrowing the once-holy place now in ruin. Shon pressed the heels of his hands hard into his eyes, trying to remember what had come next... A man with white hair pulled back in a ponytail had been standing at the head altar... something with leathery wings on his shoulder...
The painful screech of something sharp on glass had Shon jumping up, his chair falling to clatter on the ground behind him. He looked to his window but saw only orange sky beyond. Was the sun already setting? He knelt on the mattress and looked out the window, unsure what he expected to see. He was on the third floor, but that was definitely where the sound had come from, and the window was the only glass in the room.
Nothing but open sky.
He opened the tiny window, the pane swinging up and letting in cold and refreshing air that helped clear his mind. Master Daunas's voice bellowed orders from the courtyard below, and Shon stuck his head out to look down and see his fellows working through their dagger forms. He'd slept through lunch and afternoon lessons. And he still needed a shower.
If he hurried, he would be able to shower before the others finished their lesson. Shon left the window open and even opened his door before he remembered to grab a fresh uniform. Obviously, he still wasn't thinking clearly.
The halls were blissfully empty, and Shon could almost pretend that even if he did pass someone, their breath wouldn't show in the air. It was a short-lived fantasy, however. He managed to make it all the way to the showers, but when he opened the door a voice called, "Squire! Why aren't you... Oh..." Shon performed a sharp about face to stand at attention before the Major General.
"At ease, Squire Shon," Selibra sighed, waving him down, "Did you get enough rest?"
"Yes, Sir," Shon answered but then caught movement out of the corner of his eye, again. He hadn't managed to turn his head far enough to see before the Major General started speaking. Shon snapped his head back to give the officer his undivided attention.
"You did well, Squire. Smith Nangran told us what happened at the tower." Sir Selibra managed a strained smile that faded quickly, "If you want to talk about what you saw there... any one of us will be more than willing to listen. You shouldn't have had to experience death so soon." an image of an arm pulling away from a charred corpse flashed in Shon's vision.
Shon swallowed down the accompanying nausea at the memory and managed a nod, adding a quiet "Thank you, Sir." for good measure.
Feeling the need to scrub even more than before, Shon was grateful when the Major General left, allowing him to enter the still-open room. The shower was only mildly comforting, however. What should have been scalding water felt merely lukewarm now, the mist billowing off his truly icy skin thick enough that he could barely see the spigots. Closing his eyes, he scrubbed and tried to imagine the images flowing off of him with the filth...
Something chirped, and Shon slammed the water off. Just the pipes creaking... How much longer would he have to rest before his mind stopped playing tricks on him? But as he moved for his towel, Shon stopped in shock, his new uniform had been scattered around the benches and floor.
He hadn't heard the door open, but had heard the pipes creaking? But who here would even do something like this? Shon started to search the showers, but as he did, he heard something else—voices in the hall. The Squires were done with their practice. He still didn't want to see them and dressed quickly, rushing from the shower and slamming the door behind him.
Something thumped into the door from the other side. Shon held his breath and turned slowly. It was his imagination. It had to be. He reached for the handle again and, standing behind the swing, opened the shower slowly.
"He's been gone three days... Do you think they sent him away?" Thom's voice sounded from around a corner, and Shon jumped in surprise, pulling the door open fully as if he could hide behind it.
"No way. he's the best Squire we have, so what if he's a Sorcerer." They were talking about him... Shon definitely didn't want to see them yet. He dashed down the opposite way, taking a long way around through the Paladin's barracks and back to his room. Or that's what he'd planned before he remembered the Squires hall would be full of people now taking their break and trying to get into the shower before everyone else. His feet faltered, and he turned away again, to one of the hardly used stairs that would take him down to the rest of the fortress.
Barred from his room, Shon made his way to the place he associated the most with comfort, the chapel. It wasn't empty, three Paladins knelt in prayer near the front, but it didn't matter anymore. He felt a wash of calm as he entered the incense-filled room, the sweet-smelling smoke finally banishing the stench of burning hair from his memory.
Shon took a spot near the back, kneeling to pray as he stared up at the statue of Hengist behind the altar. He was dressed in full plate mail, his arm raised in triumph, holding his mighty sword, Darkspliter.
Shon sighed and felt himself smile for what felt like the first time in a very long time. He could tell Hengist anything and everything, and none of it out loud... But then his smile faded. What would he say...?
I'm sorry. I feel like I've been lying to everyone, to you. I've known there was something different about me, something wrong with me. That's why no one likes to touch me, why everyone pulls away at the feel of my skin, like it's somehow dirty or painful. I should've realized... Should have known...
But I worked so hard... You know that, don't you? And I'm not ready to give up. I'll do whatever it takes, atone anyway I can if you just tell me how. The Major General said something about it being a sign. I want to believe he meant the unlikely convenience of Smith Nangran knowing an Archmage who could make an item so I won't have to get the tattoo. Thank you. I just hope I don't disappoint after getting a second chance...
The bell for dinner sounded. Feeling better, Shon considered going with the Paladins as they left the chapel. Until one of them shivered as they passed. "Winters right around the corner," another muttered.
"We'll need to install the heating orbs soon." the last answered before the door closed... He wasn't hungry anyway.
Please, Hengist. Don't let me hurt anyone else. Kefir was trying to help me, and I answered that kindness with pain. What if the healers hadn't gotten to him in time? Would I have smothered him in ice? Please, I'll give up everything if it means that will never happen again...
But he didn't want to give up anything. He wanted to fight, to reach his highest potential, and lead a life of meaning. He thought of Master Veon-Zih. The Monk had told him that he didn't need to be a Paladin to fight for justice, and he was living proof of that. But...
I don't want to be alone... At first, I thought I just wanted you, a god, as a guiding light in my life. But now I realize that being a Paladin gives me even more than that. It gives me brothers and friends, and I don't want to lose them either. But I especially don't want to hurt them.
Shon clenched his hands tighter, as tight as he could, digging his fingers into the spaces between his knuckles; as if external pain might dull internal strife...
They say I'm scary... And I know they aren't really joking. I can see it in their eyes and hear it in their nervous laughs when they try and make it a joke. But they only mean when they fight me... don't they? And I'll never try to hurt them. It's only sparring... they know that... don't they?
He squeezed his eyes tighter shut,
But what about now? Will they be even more afraid? Even when we aren't sparring? Can I blame them if they are?
He actually found himself waiting for an answer... Of course, none came. He wasn't a Paladin yet, and wouldn't be able to feel the god until he swore his Oath and took a piece of Hengist into himself. For now, Shon took in a deep breath, as deep as he could, then let it out slowly, relaxing his hands and face as he attempted to release his anxieties unto his god.
I won't give up. I'll fight this danger within me as hard as I will fight any threat without. I ask for your help with this. Please don't give up on me yet. I'll prove I'm worthy, I swear.
The bell ending dinner and starting study time sounded. Shon stayed in the chapel until a handful of Squires came in to pray themselves. They hesitated by the door, but Shon didn't look at them. He knew he couldn't hide forever. But he also wasn't sure what he should say to any of them. Or if he should say anything at all. Shon waited until they moved away from the door to finally stand. If he had to face any of them, he wanted it to be the ones he considered friends first.
Shon left the chapel and made his way to the library, fighting the urge to just go back to his room. Heads swiveled in his direction the moment he opened the library door. Shon flinched, sucking in a sharp breath and holding it, pulling his energy in as best he could.
He stepped in, and the Squires exchanged looks, but then the Paladin on library duty coughed, and they quickly went back to reading.
His typical spot was available as usual, so Shon made his way there. The others would want to talk after... and if not, he would just go back to his room. Distracted by his continued worries -and the silent effort to hold his energy in- Shon still heard when something behind him hissed along the stone.
He spun quickly, scanning the floor. This time he definitely wasn't imagining it...
"Squire Shon... Shouldn't you be resting?" He turned back to find the Squires trying to make it seem like they weren't staring at him, while the Paladin who called looked openly concerned.
Shon's cheeks flushed, now feeling cool rather than warm. Another change... He cleared his throat, "No, Sir..." and when the Paladin's worried expression didn't let up, Shon added, "I've been resting all day."
"Three days..." Zihler muttered.
Shon met his eyes and the Squire smiled, but Shon couldn't tell if the expression seemed strained or not. He nodded anyway, taking his seat alone at the table by the window.
Books on their current subject of study were already laid out, and he pulled one forward, opening it without checking the title. As he read, he could hear the others occasionally whisper and even caught snippets of what they were saying,
"I found another one. Do you think this will be enough?" Thom asked.
"We have the rest of the hour; we should find all we can," Rerves answered. It didn't sound like they were studying, but Shon had missed three days of lessons; maybe they were working on an assignment... He went back to his reading. He would get any missed work tomorrow.
When the bell rang that would finally begin their last hour of free time, Shon closed his book. It would be best to just go to bed early; everyone seemed to think he should be resting anyway; they could talk after he got the sealing item... But he hadn't stood yet when his six closest friends jumped up, books in hand, and crowded around him, preventing him from leaving. From running away.
"We're glad you're okay." Rehlien blurted out.
"The Major General told us what happened," Baradin added.
Shon looked from him to Kefir and took in a sharp breath, "I'm..." he started to apologize, but Kefir interrupted with a broad smile,
"I'm fine. I even got a day off for it. I didn't need it though, they healed me up right away."
Rerves placed his book down on Shon's table, "It was just really surprising, you know? But hey! Now we know why you're so cold all the time."
Shon looked down at the massive tome on the table, not wanting to meet their eyes. He didn't know what to make of what they were saying. There was no way it was okay. How could they be alright with a dangerous magic user that could kill them all on accident...
"We found these. We thought they might make you feel a little better," Thom whispered, stacking his book on top of Rerves' and opening it to a page he'd marked with a ripped piece of scrap paper. It wasn't a textbook, it was a record book. Shon furrowed his brows down at the page, reading 'Sir Patrich, served 4876-4929, died 4955. Paladin of Hengist, General. Air Sorcerer...'
Shon looked up to find them all smiling down at him. Zihler set his book down over Thom's, opened to another personal record, "This one was a fire Sorcerer, and they're supposed to be the most destructive."
Rehlien took Baradin and Kefir's books and stacked them with his own beside the open records. He ran his fingers over the slew of bookmarks sticking out of the closed pages, "All Sorcerers and Paladins." Rehlien said.
"Master Daunas said you would be back in a few days, but just in case we wanted to find these for you," Thom explained in a rush, "You know... in case the officers or Mages needed to be convinced..."
Baradin cleared his throat before he spoke, clasping his hands behind his back, "We haven't found any ice Sorcerers yet, but they're also the rarest, so that really shouldn't be surprising."
"Yeah, and there are plenty of fire who are crazy dangerous even when they're trained," Kefir added quickly.
Shon could feel a burning in his eyes and blinked furiously, looking away from his friends. He wouldn't cry.. he wouldn't. "Thank you..." he managed to croak out, finally giving in and rubbing his eyes. None of them commented on his show of emotion, or the frost clouding his window.
Rerves took the seat across from him with a smile, "So, what type of familiar do you think you'll get?"
Shon managed to stop blinking enough to arch an eyebrow. Hadn't Ivelm said something about a familiar too?
"I bet you it'll be something really lame." Zihler laughed, "To balance Shon's badassness."
"Squire!" the Paladin librarian barked, "Pushups! Now!"
Zihler groaned, mumbling as he stepped back to perform the punishment, "How do they always do that?"
"Divine hearing," Rehlien snickered as Zihler started the pushups, "Probably only works for curses, though."
"You can join him," the Paladin called without looking up from his book, and Rehlien groaned, dropping down next to Zihler.
"Seriously though," Rerves said, ignoring the boys huffing and puffing through their punishment, "Familiars are animals, they're supposed to be even closer to their Sorcerer than a Paladin and their mount! Like an extension of yourself. You can see through their eyes and talk to them with your mind. It's awesome!"
Thom actually blushed, confessing, "We read up on it a bit over the last two days..."
They knew more about what he was than he did. Shon actually smiled, starting, "I don't..." but chittering, like a particularly loud squirrel, interrupted him. The Squires all swiveled their heads to look around, Rehlien and Zihler jumping to their feet with the Paladin, who stood so quickly his chair fell over. The chittering turned to chirping, and then to a purr, as Shon finally found what was making the noise.
On top of the bookshelf closest to the door, sat a tiny dragon.
The size of a large barn cat, its scales were mostly brown but had streaks and blotches of red and orange, like the few deciduous trees that still held their leaves in autumn. Its leathery wings were folded against its back and its front claws grasped the edge of the bookshelf. Its long tail, complete with a scorpion-like stinger, flicked back and forth, its sinuous neck held high as it surveyed the library.
Some of the Squires let slip breaths of wonder, and the little dragon seemed to preen at the attention, holding its head a little higher and purring even louder. The Paladin, however, stepped around his desk and commanded, "Stay back, Squires," before he started chanting. The little dragon tilted its head at the Paladin, as curious as the rest of them. A moment later, the knight's spell washed over them to fill the room, sending a shiver down Shon's spine and making more than one of the other Squires shudder.
The little dragon let out another string of chittering and hissed down at the Paladin, whose eyes went wide as he announced in a breath, "It's real."
"How did it get in?" a senior Squire asked. Shon started to stand but then fell back again as images flooded into his mind. He watched a window opening from outside the fortress, and saw himself lean out. Then the image shifted, and he saw himself digging under his bed for a new uniform and towel as the him that was watching slipped out the door. It shifted again, and he saw himself in the shower, mist billowing off his shoulders before he dug through the piles of clothes left on the bench. It shifted again, and he darted into the library and behind the bookshelf, watching as he, Shon, walked in and sat down at the little table.
Shon blinked and shook his head furiously to try and clear it. All the pictures had flooded in so fast that no one even had time to answer the question or pose their own, "I let it in..." Shon whispered, then looked at the Paladin, explaining quickly, "I didn't mean to. I left my window open to air out my room and..."
"It's okay, Squire," the Paladin was actually smiling, and the little dragon whistled, "They're goodly creatures, though elusive. I've never seen a live one." the dragon leaned forward on the bookshelf, crouching down on its front claws and wiggling its hindquarters before it leaped into the air, opening its wings to spread as wide as it was long. It glided a lap around the library then hovered in front of the Paladin, chittering again and flapping hard enough to blow the man's short hair back before flying right towards the group of Squires around Shon.
It brushed Baradin's head with its claws, the boy ducking as it swooped down to land on Shon's table. The dragon looked from the open books to Shon, then, before Shon could pull back, climbed up his arm and to his shoulder, purring hard enough to vibrate Shon too. It weighed considerably less than it looked like it should, though its claws were sharp enough to pierce through his clothes as it climbed. It brought its face right up to Shon's eye, and though he tried to pull away, it followed him with its long neck, rubbing its cheek along his face. The scales were smooth and lacked temperature, like being touched by a gloved hand. It nuzzled his cheek again, then down his neck and into his shirt.
Surprised, Shon tried to throw the dragon off, but it just dug its claws into his sleeves, chittering angrily then clawing its way around to his back before lifting itself up to drape over his head. "What..." Shon started, but the Paladin cut him off with a laugh.
"I think that answers your friends' questions, Squire."
Shon was too confused to even arch an eyebrow at the man, but Rerves apparently understood what he'd meant because he said, "But I thought only animals could be familiars, like cats and crows and stuff..."
The Paladin nodded but then shrugged, "That's usually the case, but sometimes, rarely, there will be a Sorcerer who gets something a bit more special, like a winged serpent, fairy dragon, or in this case," he nodded at Shon, "A pseudodragon."
The pseudodragon purred, vibrating Shon's head. The Squires all gaped slack-jawed in awe at it, and Shon reached up slowly. He wasn't even sure what he was going to do, pet it? Push it off? But before he'd even touched it, it lifted its head, stretching its long neck out and nuzzling into his hand, obviously not caring that his skin was colder now than it had ever been.
"Damn..." Zihler muttered in obvious disappointment, "I was really hoping it would be a toad so I would have something to make fun of..."
The little dragon's answering twitter almost sounded like a laugh.
***
She groaned, rolling over and nuzzling deeper into Her pillow. Except it didn’t smell like Her pillow. Her eyes flew open, and She sat up. Then fell back down. That was stupid. Ran and Brom had probably taken more blood than usual again… except She couldn’t remember them taking Her for samples. Not for weeks and weeks…
“It’s alright, you’re safe here,” the kindly voice of a man spoke from Her right, and She sat up again, more slowly this time. A stranger in white robes with a sword embroidered on the chest reached out to help Her up, but after touching Her back he pulled sharply away.
She was too confused to apologize for burning him. “Where?” She asked, looking around the room. Like the stranger, it was covered in white. White blankets, white rug, and white curtains hanging to either side of an open window. A window that looked out onto a blue sky. She gasped, scrambling from the bed and nearly tripping over Her white gown. Of course it was white. How in all the hells did they keep it all clean?
She shook Her head and rushed for the window. The man behind Her gasped, his chair scraping loudly as he stood to follow. She pressed Her hands on the cold glass, staring up into the sky, “I’m on an upper floor!?” She grinned excitedly over Her shoulder as the stranger stared at Her, mouth hanging open.
Turning back to the window, She used Her arm to wipe the fog from Her heat off the glass, letting Her gaze trail down. She didn’t see the treetops She expected. Not close anyway. Instead, the forest was beyond a wide clear field, which in turn was beyond a tall stone wall with people dressed in silver walking along its top. She stood on Her toes to look down through the window. Between the wall and Her was a courtyard full of more people swinging things that glinted in the sun.
This wasn’t the tower. None of those people wore robes except the nice stranger. She spun to him, “My treasures, where are they? Brom? Ran? Where…” She saw a flash of red, heard a pained bark, and smelled iron. She fell to Her knees, grasping Her chest and breathing hard, remembering bits and pieces. He killed them. He killed all of them. Then what? She couldn’t remember...
“You are in a training facility of the Temple of Hengist, Hamerfoss, in Clearhelm.” a new voice, deeper, less kind though not cruel, spoke from the doorway. Lifting Her head, She saw the new man wearing a crisp, white, uniform, with a sword hanging comfortably from his belt. Hengist… so that explained all the white.
The kind man in robes had rushed to Her but dared not touch Her. Wise. With Her head spinning so fast, there was no way She was controlling Her heat properly. “How long has she been awake?” the new man asked the kind one.
“She just woke up, Major General,”
“He killed them…” She whispered, squeezing Her eyes shut, pushing back the rage and sorrow, trying to fill in Her memory. What happened next?
“It will be alright. You're safe here,” the kind man said again.
She pulled Her own hair, lacing Her fingers into the golden strands and squeezing. What had happened? She had run down the hall, but how had She gotten out of Her room? There were strangers in Her tower. These men? She glared up at the brown-haired man who looked down at Her, his hands behind his back.
“Who are you? What did you do to the Mages?” She could feel the hair rise on the back of Her neck and a familiar tingling where the collar should be.
The Major General remained calm before Her building fury, saying only, “Calm down.” It was a command backed by magic. She felt the power flow over Her and try to settle on Her mind. She could almost sense the peace it promised but shook Her head, clearing it of the spell.
He could've used his magic to hurt Her. Perhaps not with the collar as the Archmages did, but in other ways. And yet, he hadn’t moved from his spot, his hands still behind his back. She looked again at the sword of Hengist at his side. She'd read all about the gods. Hengist was good and noble, all about self-sacrifice and protecting the weak… A fool, the Mages had said. And yet his Temple ruled this province. The Mages of Her tower would never work with the Temple of Hengist. Or any kingdom order…
She took a deep breath and let it out slowly. She didn’t need his help to calm down, not when She had something to focus on. She shoved Her grief to the back of Her mind. “How did I get here?” another image flashed in Her mind, fire all around, a white path, blue eyes.
The Paladin didn’t answer right away; instead, he motioned for the robed man - a Cleric? - to bring him a chair. She tilted Her head curiously at him, but he only sat down with a weary sigh, then gestured towards the bed, “Please, have a seat.”
She stood, returning to the bed and eyeing the door over his shoulder. He hadn’t locked it. “We saw smoke from the woods and found you in a burning tower.” the blood drained from Her face, “We have recovered several bodies from around the structure, but there were no other survivors.” he leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees and fixing Her with a piercing stare, “What happened? What was going on in that tower?”
She brought Her feet onto the bed and hugged Her legs tight, “I don’t… I can’t remember…” a fire, the tower burning… But it was made of stone. Her fire couldn’t burn that hot… Could it?
“Sir Selibra,” the kindly Cleric sounded stern, crossing his arms and glaring down at the Paladin, “She has just woken up from what was obviously a terrible ordeal. Show some compassion.”
The Paladin, Selibra, actually looked ashamed, leaning back in his chair and clearing his throat, “I apologize, miss…” he drew out the last word, looking at Her expectantly. She tilted Her head. “What is your name?” he asked more clearly. She tilted Her head the other way. Were they going to play that game here too?
The Cleric hummed then said, “Please forgive him, miss, we are all very troubled by the events and deaths at the tower. The Major General merely got ahead of himself. If you could tell us your name, then we can let you rest and…”
“I don’t have a name.”
The two men blinked dumbly at Her, and She rolled Her eyes, “I knnnooowww,” She let Her legs fall back down, so She was sitting properly again, “But I don’t know it yet. As soon as I do, I'll tell you.” She assured them. The men exchanged looks as She glanced again out the window. Maybe She should've just told them what Brom and Ran called Her… But those weren’t names. They were descriptors. No better than ‘Firewyrm.’
If these Temple men were to be believed, everything was gone. She had no room, no books, no clothes, no treasures, and no name. What did She have? She pulled Her hair over Her shoulder and stared out the window as She stroked it. She had Her hair. They hadn’t cut it in months. She had Her body. She straightened Her posture, holding Her head high. And She had Her power—the fire crackling deep inside Her soul. The Mages had taken the first two. The third had destroyed them.
“You should rest,” Selibra stood, and Her eyes snapped back to him, “You can send for me when you feel ready to talk. Until then, focus on recovering your strength and your memories.”
He made it all the way to the door, even swung it open before She called out, “What are you going to do to me?”
Selibra turned back, his eyebrows raised in surprise. The Cleric placed a hand on Her shoulder, slowly and carefully, gauging how much of Her heat he could handle. She turned to him, and he let Her go. He'd held on longer than expected. “We will keep you safe, child.” the Cleric assured Her.
The Paladin grew stiff for a moment, then brought his right fist up to his chest, “By the sword of Hengist’s honor, we will safeguard your life and freedom,” Freedom? “Whatever injustices you endured there, you will find justice in the laws of Clearhelm.” She didn’t know what to say, and so, after an awkward moment of silence, Selibra turned for the door again and left.
She didn’t lay down. Instead, She walked back to the window. The view seemed to stretch on forever from so high up, higher than She'd ever remembered being before. Even when She used to climb the trees around Her tower.
Selibra hadn’t locked the door, but the Cleric bustled around behind Her, and the wall below Her clanked with armored knights. What was freedom anyway?

2023.06.04 20:59 Joadzilla What will stop AI from flooding the internet with fake images?

Google, Adobe, Microsoft, and other tech companies are trying new ways to label content made by AI.
https://www.vox.com/technology/23746060/ai-generative-fake-images-photoshop-google-microsoft-adobe
On May 22, a fake photo of an explosion at the Pentagon caused chaos online.
Within a matter of minutes of being posted, the realistic-looking image spread on Twitter and other social media networks after being retweeted by some popular accounts. Reporters asked government officials all the way up to the White House press office what was going on.
The photo was quickly determined to be a hoax, likely generated by AI. But in the short amount of time it circulated, the fake image had a real impact and even briefly moved financial markets.
This isn’t an entirely new problem. Online misinformation has existed since the dawn of the internet, and crudely photoshopped images fooled people long before generative AI became mainstream. But recently, tools like ChatGPT, DALL-E, Midjourney, and even new AI feature updates to Photoshop have supercharged the issue by making it easier and cheaper to create hyperrealistic fake images, video, and text, at scale. Experts say we can expect to see more fake images like the Pentagon one, especially when they can cause political disruption.
One report by Europol, the European Union’s law enforcement agency, predicted that as much as 90 percent of content on the internet could be created or edited by AI by 2026. Already, spammy news sites seemingly generated entirely by AI are popping up. The anti-misinformation platform NewsGuard started tracking such sites and found nearly three times as many as they did a few weeks prior.
“We already saw what happened in 2016 when we had the first election with a flooding of disinformation,” said Joshua Tucker, a professor and co-director of NYU’s Center for Social Media and Politics. “Now we’re going to see the other end of this equation.”
So what, if anything, should the tech companies that are rapidly developing AI be doing to prevent their tools from being used to bombard the internet with hyperrealistic misinformation?
One novel approach — that some experts say could actually work — is to use metadata, watermarks, and other technical systems to distinguish fake from real. Companies like Google, Adobe, and Microsoft are all supporting some form of labeling of AI in their products. Google, for example, said at its recent I/O conference that, in the coming months, it will attach a written disclosure, similar to a copyright notice, underneath AI-generated results on Google Images. OpenAI’s popular image generation technology DALL-E already adds a colorful stripe watermark to the bottom of all images it creates.
“We all have a fundamental right to establish a common objective reality,” said Andy Parsons, senior director of Adobe’s content authenticity initiative group. “And that starts with knowing what something is and, in cases where it makes sense, who made it or where it came from.”
In order to reduce confusion between fake and real images, the content authenticity initiative group developed a tool Adobe is now using called content credentials that tracks when images are edited by AI. The company describes it as a nutrition label: information for digital content that stays with the file wherever it’s published or stored. For example, Photoshop’s latest feature, Generative Fill, uses AI to quickly create new content in an existing image, and content credentials can keep track of those changes.
AI-labeling tools like Adobe’s are still in their early stages, and by no means should they be considered a silver bullet to the problem of misinformation. It’s technically possible to manipulate a watermark or metadata. Plus, not every AI generation system will want to disclose that it’s made that way. And as we’ve learned with the rise of online conspiracy theories in recent years, people will often ignore facts in favor of believing falsehoods that confirm their personal beliefs. But if implemented well — and especially if these labels are seen as more neutral than traditional social media fact-checking — AI disclosures could be one of our only hopes for navigating the increasingly blurry distinction between fake and real media online.
Here is how some of these early AI markup systems could work, what the limitations are, and what users can do to navigate our confusing post-truth internet reality in the meantime.
The devil is in the metadata
When you look at an image on social media or a search engine today, odds are you don’t know where the photo came from — let alone if it was created by AI. But underneath the hood, there’s often a form of metadata, or information associated with the digital image file, that tells you basic details, like when and where the photo was taken. Some tech companies are now starting to add specific metadata about AI to their products at the moment of creation, and they’re making that information more public in an effort to help users determine the authenticity of what they’re looking at.
Google recently said it will start marking up images made by its own new AI systems in the original image files. And when you see an image in Google Search that’s made by Google’s AI systems, it will say something like “AI-generated with Google” underneath the image. Going a step further, the company announced it’s partnering with publishers like Midjourney and stock photography site Shutterstock to let them self-tag their images as AI-generated in Google Search. This way, if you come across a Midjourney image in Google Search, it will say something like “Image self-labeled as AI-generated.”
Google Search public liaison Danny Sullivan said that this kind of AI labeling is part of a broader effort to give people more context about images they’re seeing.
”If we can show you a helpful label, we’re going to want to do that,” said Sullivan, “but we’re also going to want to try to give you background information that we can determine independent of the label.”
That’s why Google is also adding an “About this image” feature next to image search results — whether they are AI labeled or not — that you can click and see when the image was first indexed by Google, where it may have first appeared, and where else it’s been seen online. The idea is, if you searched for, say, “Pentagon explosion” and saw a bunch of images in the results, you would be able to see a fact-checked news article debunking the piece.
“These tools are really designed to help people understand information literacy more and bake it into the search product itself,” said Sullivan.
Other major industry players have also been working on the issue of how to label AI-generated content. In 2021, a group of major companies including Microsoft, Adobe, the BBC, and Intel created a coalition called the C2PA. The group is tasked with helping to create an interoperable open standard for companies to share the provenance, or history of ownership, of a piece of media. C2PA created its first open standard last January, and since then, Adobe and Microsoft have released features using that standard.
For example, if you’re a photographer at a news outlet, you can mark when a specific picture was taken, who took it, and have that be digitally signed by your publisher. Later, your editor could make changes to the photo, signing it again with a seal of authenticity that it’s been verified by the C2PA standard. This way, you know that the photo was taken by a person — not generated by AI— and know who has made edits to it and when. The system uses cryptography to preserve the privacy of sensitive information.
“Now you can read the entire lineage of the history of a piece of digital content,” said Mounir Ibrahim, EVP of public affairs and impact at Truepic, a visual authenticity app that is a member of C2PA. “The purpose of us is to help content consumers ... decipher the difference between synthetic and authentic.”
Knowing the history and provenance of an image could potentially help users verify the legitimacy of anything from a headshot on a dating app to a breaking news photo. But for this to work, companies need to adopt the standard.
Right now, it’s up to companies to adopt the C2PA standard and label verified content as they wish. The organization is also discussing potentially standardizing the look of the C2PA content credential when it shows up on images, Ibrahim said. In the future, the C2PA credential could be similar to the little padlock icon next to the URL in your browser window that signifies your connection is secure. When you see the proposed C2PA icon, you would know that the image you’re seeing has had its origins verified.
So far, two big C2PA members, Adobe and Microsoft, have announced tools that integrate C2PA standards into their products to mark up AI-generated content. Microsoft is labeling all AI-generated content in Bing Image Generator and Microsoft Designer, and Adobe is using C2PA standards in its new AI Firefly product’s content credentials.
“The biggest challenge is we need more platforms to adopt this,” said Ibrahim.
While the C2PA-style metadata labels work behind the scenes, another approach is for AI systems to add visible watermarks, as OpenAI has done with the rainbow bar at the bottom of DALL-E images. The company says it’s also working on a version of watermarking for its text app, ChatGPT. The challenge with watermarks, though, is that they can be removed. A quick Google search turns up forms of people discussing how to circumvent the imprint.
Another imperfect option is technology that can detect AI-generated content after the fact. In January, OpenAI released a tool that lets you cross-check a block of text to determine whether it’s likely written by AI. The problem, though, is that by OpenAI’s own assessment, the tool is not fully reliable. It correctly identified only 26 percent of AI-written texts in OpenAI’s evaluations, although it’s notably more accurate with longer than shorter text.
“We don’t want any of our models to be used for misleading purposes anywhere,” said a spokesperson for OpenAI in a statement. “Our usage policies also require automated systems, including conversational AI and chatbots, to disclose to users that they are interacting with our models.”
At the end of the day, even if these early AI flagging and identification systems are flawed, they’re a first step.
What comes next
It’s still early days for tech platforms trying to automate the identification of AI-generated content. Until they identify a dependable solution, however, fact-checkers are left manually filling in the gaps, debunking images like the Pope in a puffy jacket or fake audio of politicians.
Sam Gregory, executive director of human rights and civic journalism network Witness, who works with fact-checkers largely outside of the US, said that while he thinks technical solutions to AI identification like watermarking are promising, many fact-checkers are worried about the onslaught of misinformation that could come their way with AI in the meantime. Already, many professional fact-checkers are dealing with far more content to check than humanly possible.
“Is an individual going to be blamed because they couldn’t identify an AI-generated image? Or is a fact-checker going to be the one to take the strain because they’re overwhelmed by this volume?” said Gregory. The responsibility to address AI misinformation “needs to lie on the people who are designing these tools, building these models, and distributing them,” he added.
In many cases, Gregory says, it’s unclear exactly what social media platforms’ rules are about allowing AI-generated content.
TikTok has one of the more updated policies around “synthetic media,” or media that is created or manipulated by AI. The policy, which was revised in March 2023, allows synthetic media but requires that, if it shows realistic scenes, the image must be clearly disclosed with a caption, sticker, or otherwise. The company also doesn’t allow synthetic media that contains the likeness of any private figure or anyone under 18. TikTok says it worked with outside partners like the industry nonprofit Partnership on AI for feedback on adhering to a framework for responsible AI practices.
“While we are excited by the creative opportunities that AI opens up for creators, we are also firmly committed to developing guardrails, such as policies, for its safe and transparent use,” a TikTok spokesperson said in a statement. “Like most of our industry, we continue to work with experts, monitor the progression of this technology, and evolve our approach.”
But many other platforms have policies that might need some updating. Meta, which owns Facebook and Instagram, and YouTube both have general rules against manipulated media that misleads users, but those could be clarified regarding what uses are acceptable or not, according to Gregory. Meta’s fact-checking policies state that manipulated media containing misinformation is eligible for fact-checking by its third-party partners, as it did with the fake Pentagon AI explosion claims.
“AI is bigger than any single person, company, or country, and requires cooperation between all relevant stakeholders,” Meta said in a statement. “We are actively monitoring new trends and working to be purposeful and evidence-based in our approach to AI-generated content.”
Technological solutions to help people fact-check content themselves, like AI detection systems and watermarks, couldn’t come sooner.
But NYU’s Tucker says we need to test these solutions to see whether they’re effective in changing people’s minds when they encounter misleading AI content, and what the disclosures need to look to be impactful. For example, if the disclosures that an image or video is AI-generated are too subtle, people could miss it entirely. And sometimes, labels don’t work as expected. For example, Tucker co-authored a study last year showing that high- or low-quality news credibility labels had limited effects on people’s news consumption habits and failed to change people’s perceptions.
Still, there’s hope that if AI disclosures are seen not as politicized fact-checks but as neutral context about the origins of an image, they could be more effective. To know whether these labels are resonating with people and changing their minds will require more research.
There is an urgency to figure out these problems as AI-generated content floods the internet. In the past, tech companies had time to debate the hypothetical risks of AI misinformation because mainstream generative AI products weren’t yet out in the wild. But those threats are now very real.
These new tools that label AI-generated content, while far from perfect, could help mitigate some of that risk. Let’s hope tech companies move forward with the necessary speed to fix problems that come with AI as quickly as they’re being created.

2023.06.04 09:27 Teffycom Last week in codomomental (May 29 - June 4)

TOKYO TEFUTEFU held two livestreams in which the members took turns addressing the fans, expressing their feelings and their mood for the future. It’s worth saying that these livestreams were completely unprecedented – it was the first time they expressed their intention to work hard for the group’s future with such strong determination, it was the first time they were so open and honest about their worries and feelings, and it was the first time they proclaimed with such confidence that their dreams and goals are firmly tied to TOKYO TEFUTEFU, that they can’t see themselves anywhere else, and that they don’t intend to give up even though they are facing many difficulties. They’ve said all of this many times before, but this is the first time it’s been so intense and open, and I have to say it’s really impressive.
The girls are burning with the desire to achieve their goals by all means and ask the fans to give them any, even the smallest, help and in return they promise to definitely repay them with even more awesome music and performances.
It’s worth saying that it’s really evident how hard they are trying and taking advantage of every opportunity, so I would also like to ask you to give them even the smallest bit of help and support that you can (even if it’s just support on social media). Let’s show them that such dedication and commitment will surely be rewarded!
Thank you for listening to our feelings. I think we’ve been able to talk about things we don’t normally talk about openly and put into words.
It’s more than just fun and smiles.
We are moving forward, struggling, suffering, and trying to turn it all into strength, at least a little bit. See this determination with your own eyes on our tour🥀

We will continue to move forward so that TOKYO TEFUTEFU can be an encouragement for you to try, an encouragement to live, and that there will be at least a few more of these people and that they will be saved.
From Yuzuriha Ouhi's Twitter.
During the stream I remembered different things and once again made sure that TOKYO TEFUTEFU, that our “mirages” are everything to me💭⑉の ̫の⑉
I’m glad I could tell you my feelings𓂃 𓈒𓏸🪽
From Tokanai Nonno's Twitter.
It’s easy to say I’m trying, so I’ll show it clearly at the shows. So I’ll be glad if you continue to lend us your strength, at least a little bit. There is salvation in your support, there always has been, and that’s why I want to be a strength to you.

"Beyond this night, in the land where night reigns."
This is the land of night that connects the earth and the other world. Only four constellations can break out beyond the 13th night: the constellation of “Dawn Mischief Girl”, the constellation of “Evening Waiting”, the constellation of “Scattering Drops of Tears in the Night” and the constellation of “Thread of Fate”. Even if you count the days on your fingers, this world line is such that sooner or later you will surely lose count.
Good night, future.

2023.06.04 08:46 Teban54 [Analysis] Tyranitar (and its Mega) with Brutal Swing in raids: The Dark-type Monster Returns

[Analysis] Tyranitar (and its Mega) with Brutal Swing in raids: The Dark-type Monster Returns

TL;DR - Hunt down those Cliffs before Shadow Larvitar goes away!

Shadow (Dark) Tyranitar redefines dark/ghost attackers now. It's at Mega Gengar tier, MILES ahead of all other non-megas, is one of the most useful shadows in raids among all types, and is very future proof.
  • L30 Shadow Tyranitar = L50 Hydreigon and all others
Regular (Dark) Tyranitar = Hydreigon. Mayyybe 1% below Hydreigon, and it's mostly typing-dependent.
Once released, Mega Tyranitar will become #1 Dark and #1 Rock, both in solo performance (though Mega Diancie will be better), and especially in group damage contribution due to its bulk.
Dark or Rock? Save 1 non-shadow of each for the mega, then: Shadow Dark > Shadow Rock > Regular Dark = Hydreigon > Regular Rock.
  • Ideally, both Shadow Dark and Shadow Rock are worth making teams of (rock team mixed with Rampardos), but prioritize Dark.
  • Shadow Rock is also #1 non-mega rock, but just barely, and will eventually be outclassed. Keep at least 1 for Rockets though.
  • DO NOT PURIFY!
Keep reading for:
  • Why each Tyranitar can't double duty
  • Dark/Ghost and Rock-type attacker comparison charts and Mega comparison charts
    • Brief mention of Mega Sableye (it disappoints)
  • Is Shadow Tyranitar (dark) the most useful raid attacker of all types? (Strength & Utility metric)
  • Pairwise comparisons involving shadow and regular Tyranitar
  • Future considerations
    • Shadow Darkrai with Dark Void is the only one that can truly outclass Shadow Tyranitar
  • More detailed recommendations on "Dark vs. Rock"
  • List of my previous analyses - now in Google Sheets!

Introduction

At the start of the Season of Hidden Gems, we got our seasonal Go Battle League move update. As part of the update, Tyranitar can now learn Brutal Swing as part of its regular, non-legacy moveset, using a Regular Charged TM.
Additionally, the season website has (accidentally?) revealed that Mega Tyranitar will make its debut in Mega Raids from July 25 to August 4 (full schedule on Go Hub). A detailed look at the website's source code also shows Mega Sableye release from June 29 to July 6.
When I previously wrote about Tyranitar for its Community Day Classic in January, my tone was rather bleak, as regular Tyranitar had already fallen way below the tier lists of both rock and dark attackers. Quoted from the TL;DR back then:
Unless you missed December CD, relax - 2023 is not 2018. Regular Tyranitar is not a must-have anymore.
But that was when Tyranitar's dark moveset was Bite/Crunch, both being mediocre to bad moves. Now, Tyranitar can instead use Brutal Swing, a borderline overpowered (OP) move designed for Hydreigon to shine on its Community Day a year ago.
Does Brutal Swing help both regular and Shadow Tyranitar restore its 2017 glory? How will Mega Tyranitar (and Mega Sableye) perform in raids once they arrive? I'll address these questions with the following parts:
  1. Tyranitar (Regular, Shadow, Mega) and Mega Sableye as Dark/Ghost-type raid attackers
  2. Mega Tyranitar as a Rock-type raid attacker
  3. Future Considerations - What else can catch up with Shadow Tyranitar?
  4. Verdict: Dark or Rock?
If you're on desktop and want to jump to a particular part, search "Part X".
You can now follow me (@teban54) on Twitter!
Since this post is too long, Reddit may not allow edits after publishing. Should there be minor changes or bug fixes, I will mention them in a comment.

A legacy fast move - why each Tyranitar can't double duty

A minor note that should be obvious for veteran players, but still useful to point out.
To function as a rock type, Tyranitar needs Smack Down, a legacy fast move. This means you can't build a single Tyranitar and TM back and forth between dark and rock movesets. An individual Tyranitar is locked in as either a rock type or a dark type, not both.
This may force you to build twice as many Tyranitars as you normally would - a dark team and a rock team - if necessary.
Do note that you will be able to get Smack Down by evolution during December 2023 Community Day, without needing an Elite Fast TM.
And if you really want to, you can TM a Smack Down Tyranitar to Bite. It's a one-way street: Rock -> Dark is a yes, Dark -> Rock is a no (or at least expensive).

Part 1: Tyranitar as a Dark Attacker

[Part 1 TL;DR] Shadow Tyranitar redefines the Dark/Ghost meta, being at Mega Gengar tier, and L30 Shadow Ttar = L50 other options. It's now a Tier 1 shadow in utility across all types.
Regular Tyranitar is virtually the same as Hydreigon, mayyybe 1% worse and typing-dependent.
Mega Tyranitar is also at Mega Gengar tier, and will likely be the choice for a Dark/Ghost Mega from now on.
Dark and Ghost attackers ranked by their average in-raid performance, using ASE and ASTTW.
Charts of ASE with and without dodging are here.

Brutal Swing is a HUGE upgrade on Tyranitar: an 18% improvement, almost the same as shadow vs. non-shadow, and enough to cross several tiers.
  • Put it another way: Non-shadow Tyranitar with Brutal Swing is as good as Shadow Tyranitar without Brutal Swing.
As a result, Shadow Tyranitar REDEFINES non-mega Dark/Ghost attackers now.
  • Shadow Tyranitar's power gets to Mega Gengar tier, and most people should know how OP Mega Gengar is. (Detailed comparisons later...)
  • Everything that we used to call "a top dark/ghost type" gets left WAY behind. This includes: Hydreigon, Shadow Weavile, Shadow Tyranitar without Brutal Swing, Shadow Mewtwo (Shadow Ball), Giratina Origin, Darkrai. Now, Shadow Tyranitar at Level 30 = all these options at Level 50, Hydreigon included.
  • For the DPS lovers, here's the ER and DPS table. Indeed, even in raw DPS, Shadow Tyranitar is now the highest among all non-mega dark/ghost types - and it still has good bulk!
Regular Tyranitar is now virtually the same as Hydreigon, mayyybe 1% below. Together, they're the top non-shadow non-mega options.
  • This also means it's better than Giratina-O and Darkrai.
  • So, non-shadow Tyranitar isn't meta-defining per se, since Hydreigon already existed. If you had a Hydreigon army from its CD, regular Ttar doesn't do anything extra, aside from typing differences. Put your resources into the shadows.
  • (Detailed comparisons later...)
When Mega Tyranitar arrives, it will sit in the same tier as Mega Gengar and Shadow Tyranitar in individual performance. In other words, top of the type.
  • Mega > Shadow, but DO NOT PURIFY.
  • (Detailed comparisons and mega charts later...)

Shadow Tyranitar (Dark)'s Incredible Utility

[Section TL;DR] Due to the high utility of dark/ghost types (many bosses to use them against), Shadow Tyranitar is now one of the most useful raid attackers across all types. This will remain the case even after most future shadows (including shadow legendaries) are released. A solid Tier 1 shadow for raiding.
I've always treated dark and ghost types as "one" of the most useful types for raiding, if not the most useful. Their main roles are anti-psychic and anti-ghost, and it happens that there's a crazy number of psychic-type T5 bosses (perhaps the most common type among legendaries).
Back when I wrote the Shadow Mewtwo analysis in January, I defined a "Strength and Utility" (S&U) metric, which combines individual powers of raid attackers with the number of raids they can be used against. For example, Shadow Mewtwo as a psychic type doesn't do too well, because psychic attackers are rarely needed.
With all expected future Gen 1-5 shadows at that time - which included Shadow Hydreigon, but not Shadow Tyranitar with Brutal Swing - the metric looked like this:
Strength and Utility (S&U) metric with Gen 1-5 shadows in January 2023. \"(Shadow) Hydreigon\" on this chart is a close approximation for Shadow Tyranitar with Brutal Swing.
Treat the "Hyderigon" on the chart as Shadow Tyranitar.
That means... Shadow Tyranitar (dark) is one of the most useful raid attackers - #1 by the S&U metric. Both right now, and in a future where all Gen 1-5 shadows are released.
The incredibly powerful (future) shadow legendaries that you're thinking of: Shadow Mewtwo, Groudon, Rayquaza, Terrakion... In terms of utility, they all pale in comparison to Shadow Tyranitar.
  • One caveat is that this chart only considers utility of a single type. Shadow Mamoswine's utility in either of its types may be lower than Shadow Tyranitar, but its combined utility will likely be higher, at least today.
So yes, I would absolutely rank Shadow Tyranitar (dark) as a Tier 1 shadow in raids today. (And my definition of Tier 1 was very restrictive. I ranked Shadow Mewtwo as Tier 2... And people hated it.)

Comparisons: Mega & Shadow Tyranitar, and Mega Gengar

[Section TL;DR] Mega > Shadow Ttar. Mega Gengar technically "wins" more often than both (and still has the highest DPS/TTW), but it's very unreliable, and when it fails, it fails very badly.
Mega Tyranitar vs. Shadow Tyranitar vs. Mega Gengar (L40 best friends)
Mega Tyranitar vs. Mega Gengar: (Individual power, without damage boosting)
  • Mega Gengar may be better than Mega Tyranitar more often, but it's WAY less consistent.
  • This is due to Mega Gengar's fragility and weakness to psychic moves. On the other hand, Mega Tyranitar doesn't fear much, except fighting moves.
  • As a result, Mega Tyranitar gets better average Estimator. (Remember the bar chart above doesn't show how much better each option is.) In TTW, Mega Gengar still pulls ahead.
The other two pairs are comparing apples (megas) to oranges (non-megas), but:
Shadow Tyranitar vs. Mega Gengar:
  • Same discussion as above, except that Shadow Ttar fares worse than its Mega counterpart.
  • Their average Estimators are similar at L40-50, whereas Mega Gengar is ahead in TTW.
Mega Tyranitar vs. Shadow Tyranitar:
  • In theory, Shadow Ttar actually out-DPSes Mega Ttar by 2.1%. But Mega Ttar has 54% more TDO, more than enough to make up for it.
  • Indeed, in practice, Shadow's tiny DPS advantage almost evaporates. Mega is better.

Comparisons: Regular Tyranitar vs. Hydreigon and others

[Section TL;DR] Hydreigon is technically still better, but only by 1%, and basically typing-dependent. Tyranitar outclasses most other options, arguably except Shadow Weavile.
Tyranitar vs. other similar Dark and Ghost attackers (L40 best friends)
Everything listed here used to be the "golden standard" for dark and ghost. Now, even non-shadow Tyranitar at least puts up a fight, if not straight up outclasses them. (Recall that Shadow Tyranitar is above all of them by 18%.)
Starting with Tyranitar vs. Hydreigon, as it's the most relevant pair.
  • Hydreigon has 256 base attack to Tyranitar's 251, but Ttar has more defense and HP. Now that they have the same moveset, Hydreigon naturally has slightly higher DPS, while Tyranitar has higher TDO.
  • From the bar chart... Yes, Hydreigon is technically still better.
  • However, it's only better by a tiny amount - usually on the scale of 1%.
    • Here's a plot of the extent to which each one is better than the other. In 80% of cases, the difference is really small.
  • In practice, what's preferred essentially boils down to typing differences.
Tyranitar vs. Shadow Weavile is also interesting: Shadow Weavile is a classic glass cannon, stronger in the best case, but very risky. But if you're comparing to a shadow... Why not use Shadow Tyranitar instead?
Tyranitar basically outclasses the rest (Darkrai, Giratina-O, Chandelure, Gholdengo), aside from typing disadvantages, such as Focus Blast Mewtwo.

Dark and Ghost-type Mega Comparisons

[Section TL;DR] Mega Tyranitar > all dark megas, and > Mega Gengar unless everyone else uses ghost. Mega Sableye disappoints.
Comparison of dark- and ghost-type megas, in terms of damage up to a fixed time frame (relative to the no-mega baseline). Big type icons denote attackers that other raiders use.
As usual, this chart looks at the question "which mega contributes the most damage to the group", accounting for both its own damage output and its mega boost to other raiders. Note that Primal Kyogre/Groudon in the 6th slot may still be the best way to contribute damage (method explained in my Mega Pinsir analysis).
If you don't want to "use" a Primal...
Yes, Mega Tyranitar will outclass all Dark-type Megas on all fronts - in both power (Houndoom) and group boosting (Gyarados).
Comparing to Mega Gengar:
  • If you coordinate so that everyone else uses ghost types, then Mega Gengar is better.
  • However, if you're not sure what others will bring, Mega Tyranitar is better, often by far.
Brief mention on Mega Sableye. In theory, being able to boost both Dark and Ghost damage - regardless of what others choose - sounds very enticing. Sadly, Mega Sableye's laughable power and mediocre bulk means it can't execute that well. It's worse than Mega Tyranitar in almost all situations, including when others use ghost types.

Part 2: Mega Tyranitar as a Rock Attacker

[Part 2 TL;DR] Mega Tyranitar's individual power is barely above Mega Aerodactyl (current best rock type), and slightly below Mega Diancie. However, its superior bulk makes it the best mega for contributing damage in group raids.
Rock attackers ranked by their average in-raid performance, using ASE and ASTTW.
Charts of ASE with and without dodging are here.

In individual power, Mega Tyranitar is the best rock attacker, being better than Mega Aerodactyl... But just barely.
  • It will also have worse solo performance than Mega Diancie, when/if it's released at Go Fest. (Not shown on the chart)
  • However, Mega Tyranitar has a massive bulk advantage over Mega Diancie and Aerodactyl, making it the Rock-type Mega of choice due to boosting other players. (More on this in a moment...)
Brief note on Shadow and regular Tyranitar:
  • Shadow Tyranitar is the best non-mega rock type in Estimator, but only barely ahead of Rampardos. In large lobbies (TTW), Rampardos actually catches up.
    • Shadow/Mega Tyranitar are tanks, while Rampardos and Mega Aerodactyl are glass cannons. The latter have higher DPS respectively, but not enough bulk to fully shine when relobbying is a concern.
    • A mixed lobby of, say, 3 Rampardos followed by 3 Shadow Tyranitar may perform even better.
  • Non-shadow Tyranitar is worse than several options, and #6 non-shadow non-mega.
More discussions on Shadow and regular Tyranitar with Smack Down can be found in my CD Classic analysis.

Rock-type Mega Comparisons

Comparison of rock-type megas, in terms of damage up to a fixed time frame (relative to the no-mega baseline).
Very simple chart.
Mega Tyranitar is the best rock-type mega to use in group raids for damage contribution, due to its superior bulk providing the 30% mega boost for longer. Even though it's weaker than Mega Diancie by itself.

Part 3: Future Considerations - What else can catch up with Shadow Tyranitar?

[Part 3 TL;DR] Shadow Tyranitar is very future-proof as a dark type. Future counters such as Shadow Hydreigon may become similar, but nothing can truly outclass it until we get Shadow Darkrai with Dark Void. However, as a rock type, it will eventually be outclassed by Shadow Rhyperior, Shadow Rampardos, etc.

Future Dark-type Attackers

Future and speculative dark and ghost attackers ranked by ASE and ASTTW.
Charts of ASE with and without dodging are here.

If we're only talking about what can outclass Shadow Tyranitar? The answer is: Only Shadow Darkrai, once it gets Dark Void.
Several things can become equivalent to Shadow Tyranitar or barely below, however:
  • Shadow Hydreigon. Just like their non-shadow forms, their shadows will likely tie each other.
  • Darkrai (non-shadow) with Dark Void, if the move is sufficiently OP.
  • Shadow Darkrai with its current moves. If Niantic never gives us Dark Void.
  • Calyrex Shadow Rider, if it gets a Game Master moveset change and receives Hex.
  • Hoopa Unbound with its signature move.
Blacephalon (with the best possible moves) and Shadow Chandelure will lie between non-shadow and Shadow Tyranitars, but probably on the lower side.
In short... Shadow Tyranitar is pretty darn future-proof as a dark type.

Future Rock Attackers

On the other hand, as a rock type, Shadow Tyranitar is waiting to be outclassed by future shadows. In particular, Shadow Rhyperior and Shadow Rampardos. (And to a less extent, Shadow Terrakion and Shadow Gigalith.)
I covered them in my CD Classic analysis in January, including possibilities of Tyranitar receiving better rock-type moves. You can jump to the charts here.

Part 4: Verdict - Dark or Rock?

So here's a punchline:
Do you want a #1 dark that's miles ahead of other dark types, or a #1 rock that's only barely ahead of other rock types?
A #1 dark that's very unlikely to be outclassed, or a #1 rock that will be outclassed sooner or later?
Based on this, here's a more detailed set of advice:
Form Dark Rock
Mega 1 non-shadow Dark for Mega 1 non-shadow Rock for Mega
Shadow As many Shadow Dark as possible Ideally also a team of Shadow Rock and Rampardos, at least 1, but lower priority than dark
Non-shadow Round out your Hydreigon team, if you lack Shadow Ttars Just the 1 Mega, unless you lack all the better options
Or, as a one-liner: After 1 Mega for each, Shadow Dark > Shadow Rock > Regular Dark = Hydreigon > Regular Rock. If you need to choose between limited Shadow Larvitars with good IVs, prioritize dark.
  • DO NOT PURIFY! Use another non-shadow for the mega.
  • I recommend having at least 1 Shadow Rock for Rocket battles. Smack Down Ttar is awesome especially against flying grunts.
Factors that went into the recommendations above, which also serves as a recap of the whole article:
  1. Megas for both types are a must.
  2. Both Shadow Dark and Shadow Rock are currently #1 non-mega of their types. Both are worth building teams of (though the rock team may be mixed with Rampardos).
  3. Shadow Dark fares significantly better among its own type than Shadow Rock, is stronger in raw power, and is also more future proof.
  4. I'd try my best not to TM a Shadow Rock to Dark - find a better one from Cliff. But if you really have to, Rampardos and Rhyperior get you covered. Shadow SD Tyranitar is ahead of Rhyperior, but they fulfill the same role: a rock-type tank.
  5. Shadow Ttar > Regular Ttar, of course. So ideally, any resources should preferably go into the shadows before the non-shadows (if at all).
  6. Regular Dark = Hydreigon, or 1% below. Anyone that has already built a Hydreigon team doesn't need another regular Tyranitar. If you haven't, regular Ttar is awesome, but why not build a Shadow Ttar instead?
  7. Regualr Rock < Rampardos, Rhyperior, Terrakion, Tyrantrum, Gigalith. TM'ing Regular Rock to Dark wouldn't be too crazy.
Of course, these are general guidelines, and may differ based on your availability of attackers, preferences (e.g. Unique 6, hate shadows), etc.
Ultimately, do what makes you happy.

What's next?

I'll start working on Breaking Swipe Haxorus analysis ASAP. Preliminary thoughts can be found here.
Beyond that, I will likely be scaling down the frequency and depth of my analyses soon. More details and explanations to come. (This article is already less in-depth than it could have been.)
