2023.06.07 15:08 SandraSandraSandra A Struggle - The Saga of Flower-Hill 5

The hill appeared deserted. Sonurupākä was not sure if he should find the worrying, or a positive indication that the disruption caused by their hordes has gone relatively unnoticed.
His wife and the Great Mothers of his clan had done it. They had united the clans of Konuthomu behind a single purpose. Behind a single man. Behind him. More than that, his mission east had been a success—they think. This hill is where they are supposed to meet. Is it possible the people of Kamābarha have betrayed their trust.
He stews on this risk as the column advances up the hill. They travel in twos—one with a spear, one with a bow—each carrying a simple cloth rucksack with arrows and food.
Ahead he sees a face emerge from the undergrowth—he draws his bow and knocks the arrow he’d had at his belt, and then noticed the lack of feathers and painted pictographs. In Rhadämā he calls, “Hail good son, I hope your wait has been short and fruitful.”
Despite the initial shock of a bow in his face, the Kamābarha scout recovers admirably, “Aye, we just arrived then finished the midday meal. Come, I shall take you to our Outer-Chief.”
The featherless man, young and lithe with hungry eyes and handsome visage, leads the column up the hill. As they round the crest, a crowd emerged seated in its meadowy crest.
It’s a good crowd, with bows and spears much the same as theirs. The leader stands dressed in a blue and red cape and central skirt. Ōdjobanama, son of the great clan mother of Kamābarha, greets him heartily, “The spirits are good bringing us together so swiftly. Please, sit, share my plate.” He guides Sonurupākä over to a small circle of richly dressed men. Before them sit plates with zizania, fried tuber, and rabbit. Sitting, the two leaders eat and talk, planning for the assaults.
There are three main settlements of this particular band of Yelithātsan, surrounded by managed forest and meadowland for grazing and their meagre farms imitating civilization. The attack is to begin after the fall of night, when the savages are hopefully in their cups—even barbarians keep to the holy day. They honour Him in another way: he saves us all from destruction, so we shall save ourselves from pilfering. Splitting the horde into two equal groups, one under each Outer-Chief’s command, they shall approach the main village together. Once cleared, they will move on to the subsequent two. Messy business, but necessary.
The Outer-Chiefs toast their plans with small cups of cranberry wine, and lay down for a rest. The night shall be long and tiring.
The flickering torchlight paints their faces ghostly as they stand, ringing the village.
It is a quaint, wooden affair with thatch roofs and small-halls. Larger barns surround the village in the pasture land. Those shan’t be touched, the bison’s their reward, after all.
Half a dozen scouts creep into the village, the sounds of caroling have ceased—the festivities are at an end. It has been a dry month, more so than usual, and the homes take fire easily. First the thatch but then the thinner planks and wattle used. The scours quickly retreat to the village surroundings and take up their spears or bows, posted beside arrows stuck-standing in the dry earth.
The first shouts are ones of terror—the smell of smoke and unwelcome light rousing the unknowing sleepers within.
“Water, water,” the cries ring out as the people scramble to put out the fires.
The first to show themselves are the young mothers, easily roused and quickly killed as arrows fly. The village is surrounded, there is nowhere to flee.
Cries of terror and “attack” begin to accompany those for water. Somewhere some babes begin to bawl.
Sonurupākä steadies his face and fired arrows, piercing the throat of a young boy, newly-feathered, who took up a spear in his house’s defence.
“Savagery is a blight upon the land. An ordered paddy requires weeding. Allow for rot and you ruin the store.”
Repeating platitudes under his breath, he fires again and again into the crowds. Still, his stomach rolls. It is his duty, nothing more. He was trusted to do this. It is an honour.
One of his men pierces a woman with a babe, the two falling to the earth in a single heap. Another a wizened matriarch. A few brave fools with spears and clubs and knives make it to the perimeter, only for the spearmen of the forces of order to make quick work of them.
As the fires rage higher and all hope of putting them out is lost, and bodies begin to pile, more and more of the Yelithatsan simply throw their bodies to the ground and plea for forgiveness, for grace, for god.
The harder challenge is raised by those of the farmhouses and barns attacking from the dark. A few clever Yelithatsan loose arrows from the forests, downing some of the forces of civilization, but they too are overwhelmed.
With the resistance broken, it’s easy work to go through the wreckage, slicing the throats of those wounded but struggling long—offering a little prayer and making them an offering in thanks for protection in the battle.
The main task, however, is slicing off the left ears off the defeated—both living and dead. By taking the Kemihatsārä of the defeated, they are robbed of status and power. Women, youths, and weaker men are left alive—if they don’t get infected from their wound—and are to be taken back as farm labour. Their feathers of parrot and pigeon shall adorn the cloaks of the victors.
Those who are too wilful receive a simpler fate: a knife makes quick work of resistance.
Binding the prisoners and leaving some men to guard them, the troupes split up and continue their assault.
Some 800 lie dead as midday sets in, but thousands of bison and many urns of wine have been seized. The victors take turns sleeping as others burn the dead—Proper pyres with prayers for the honoured dead, the defeated built in with the kindling.
The divvying up of the rewards is simple enough: Konuthomu’s rewards belong to the clan mothers—they shall decide the division upon their return (or, realistically, already have), and Ōdjobanama’s requests seemed fair.
They shall rest and feast here tonight, amongst the ruins of the village. In the morning, the captives will be loaded with goods and brought to their new lives as landless labour: servants of new clans. Before the funeral pyres, Sonurupākä completes a ritual. This is perhaps aggressive, inventing something new, but it seems necessary. Casting the ears into the fire, he grants the Kemihatsārä of the defeated to the victorious soldiers. Feathers of parrot and pigeon are added to cloaks: trophies of victory. Those who distinguished themselves most admirably receive more, with multiple feathers marking their prestige.
The duNothudo, of DjamäThanä at least, had told him to treat the victors as heroes. He prays this is what they meant. But the men had begun to add the feathers to their own cloaks—and that anarchy could be tolerated.
The smell of burnt flesh accompanies the feast, dozens of bison roast over raging fires and hearty stews of rice and tuber grace the tables. Glory tastes excellent.
The welcome back in Konuthomu was incredible. A small, congratulatory feast was thrown upon their return, and Sonurupākä was granted a full row of clan-feathers from each of the six clans: extending his cape beneath his tail-bone.
The division of the resources was decided upon, with 144 bison set aside for the Autumnal Equinox. Invitations were sent out far and wide for all villages within six days of canoeing to come, pay homage to the Great Mothers of Konuthomu, take part in the bounty and generosity of the Mothers, and arrange for their commitments to the granaries of Konuthomu. The Potters’ Quarter, a dense maze of small, two-story houses, kilns, and workshops below the Themilanan split between DjamäThanä in the East and NāpäkoduThonu in the West was abuzz.
1728 bowls of celadon.
That is what Senisedjarha had called for, and that is what Sonurupākä must deliver. The Nōlukomuko, DjamäThanä’s portion of the recent prisoners, were put to work quarrying the feldspar needed to make the glaze, and the workshops of the Potters’ Quarter seemed lit and full both night and day. Overview of the Quarter is not chiefly Sonurupākä’s duty, but the fruit harvests are in the hands of Nolunaman and Sonurupākä is not needed beyond the city.
Perhaps soon, if messengers come back reporting on the peasants who refuse to pay homage to the Great Mothers, he’ll be needed beyond the Themilanan. But for now, he can dedicate himself to artistry and allow the glaze to clear his mind.
They’d needed to remind a few families of their position—and what they owe to the Great Mothers of Konuthomu. But the Autumnal Equinox proved to be the greatest event Konuthomu had ever known. In the meadows just beyond the fields, dozens of long tables were set up. Seventy-two fire pits were dug, each to roast two of the 144 bison for the feast. Tsukõdju had never witnessed such a feast.
The evening ends with declarations by the duNothudo: Nāpäkodu Peritēki-Demisenikonu is named Outer-Chief—it makes sense, his time is up and he has served his duty well.
But the duNothudo do not stop there. “As is plain to all, the world grows more dangerous, more complex. We need a strong hand to enact our wisdom, and to protect us. Nāpäkodu Peritēki-Demisenikonu shall be our spear: the protector of Konuthomu. But what good is a spear without a kiln and field to protect? We thus name Djamä Sonurupākä-Pēzjeceni Inner-Chief.”
A murmur rises. So his task is not done.
The weather has cooled and the harvest has been completed. He has had a busy few months. But as he has settled into his new role and finished the duties with the harvest, he has had time to think.
It’s night now, the air is cold. He woke from bed and is wearing only a woolen poncho, traded for from the Yeli. He walks in the courtyard garden in the Rhadämā style house he built—indisputably the greatest in the Themilanan, positioned on a flat mound extending above the Potters’ District.
He woke up from a recurring nightmare: he’s back in that flaming village, he looses an arrow at a figure running at him through the flames. He goes to see who it was, and finds Senisedjarha holding their newborn daughter.
At that moment he always wakes up. One of the serving girls on duty brings him his pipe, packed with tobacco, and a cup of strong maple wine. He sits on a rock, moonlight filtering through the leafy canopy above him.
A man must do his duty, for that is what makes a path.
Another drink and he’ll return to bed and take his wife in his arms.
Another drink and he’ll be able to sleep.

2023.06.07 15:07 No-Knowledge-19 I think my life is over and need your help

[T.W: Suicide ideation, self harm]
Hi everyone, how y'all doing? Hope y'all are having a fantastic day.
Alright, I don't know whether this would be the right sub to post it but, I honestly don't know where else to post this and I'm looking for any tiny ounce of optimism.
Honestly, I myself don't know what exactly I am looking for. This is gonna be more like a rant ig. Just leave your opinion below guys.
I have been lurking in this sub for a while now and most people here seem chill, laid back and friendly. I thought, maybe reaching out to people of this sub would help me in some way or other way.
I'm 19M, I have been living with my parents. I'm from a tier 3 town in central Tamil Nadu. I'm an engineering student at a Tier 3 Anna University affliated college in my town. I'm a B.E Electronics and Communication Engineering student to be specific. I never really wanted to join this college tho.
I was a happy and studios kid back in my 10th std. My shit was together. I was the popular kid, but never really bothered to be popular in first place. (I'm sorry if I sounded cocky here)
I scored very good marks both in my 10th std midterms and preboards but, due to my lethargic attitude and my newly formed phone addiction back then, I messed up 10th std final boards and got only 372/500. I had the potential to get 400+ but screwed up big time.
We had a new principal at our school back then. She implemented strict rules for admission of previous 10th std class students into 11th std.
You had to have scored above 350 to even secure admission for 11th std (even if you were the old 10th std student). You had to have secured 400, to demand for Maths stream, otherwise you had to go for pure science.
My dad thought that there isn't much scope with pure science stream so he wanted me enroll for CS-maths. Since I had scored only 372/500, my dad decided to change my school.
I lost touch with my old schoolmates, couldn't make any new friends here. I hated every second in that new school. I was very depressed.
2020 came, so did COVID. This is when my mental health deteriorated. I also found out that my parents might not be the kindest people, which I thought them of to be.
One day, I heard my mom talk shit about me and gossip about me to one of my aunt on phone. I overheard it. Prior to that, I have told her multiple times to not do that anymore but, she still did. I was infuriated and wanted to teach her a lesson, so I took a blade from my sharpener and cut myself deep in one of my arms. When she the scar, she was horrified. She did feel sorry for a while about it but, when on to do it again.
I once kinda tried to do similar thing with my dad as he was also no receptive to my talks. I drank a bottle full of phenoyl from bathroom and cut myself multiple times. He didn't even feel sorry like my mom did. He just flat out told me that I was doing this all for attention. I drank that phenol while he was about to go to bed. He didn't do anything, he didn't even care anything about me, he didn't even flinch. He didn't care if I was alive or dead.
Now some of you may ask that this is highly toxic of me. Yes, I agree but, what can you expect from an only child born to two emotionally unavailable parents?
There were many times where their activities clearly bothered and I would tell them. They would still go on to do it. How am I supposed to communicate? Isn't communication a key in any healthy relationship? What if the person you are trying to communicate to, isn't receptive at all?
The more and more I hurt myself, they lesser receptive they became. They never bothered to ask me what I wanted or what's that's bothering me. The more and more I cut myself, they would take me to this money minded psychiatrist, who also never listened to my problems but would prescribe me bunch of sedatives, when I had no sleeping issue in first place.
I eventually formed a dependance on his sedatives down the line and couldn't get rid of them for nearly 1 year. I was taking meds throughout 2020 for nothing.
My parents would buy me anything but were never emotionally available or supportive. They were downright abusive to say the least.
Then, by the year 2021, I was about to write my 12th board exams but COVID second wave happened.
I got 357/500 in 12th std, which isn't some good marks. My batch got passed during second wave COVID lockdown when government declared us all to have passed the exams without writing them.
I always wanted to pursue my bachelors outside of my own hometown, like Chennai or Coimbatore but, my dad refused to let me go outside of this town cos he said he doesn't trust me and I would toil away all of my course duration, partying, goofing around instead of studying.
I even tried to convince him to send me to Trichy SRM but, he didn't bulge to it too. He said that our house is too far away so I wouldn't be able to study everyday after returning from college.
Trichy itself is 1½ hours away from my home. Not to mention, I myself have seen SRM bus often time crossing our neighborhood. I even begged him to get me enrolled at a hostel for the sake joining Trichy SRM but adhuku kuda, "Nee veetta vittu veliya pona padika maatta" crap.
I was basically given two options, get BCA at Sastra or go for B.E at this local engineering college. I chose the latter. I tried convincing my dad he didn't bulge. One of my relative even tried to support me but, he still didn't bulge.
I somehow secretly resent him for what he made me to do.
Now, let's talk about the real stuff that has been bothering me.
I joined this local tier 3 Anna University affliated college. I got one backlog in 1st sem. Then got 3 backlogs in 2nd sem. 4 new backlogs in 3rd sem. By the time I got 4 new backlogs, I had already cleared 3 out of the 4 old backlogs (1 from 1st sem +3 from 2nd sem). Now, I have total of 5 backlogs and I'm in 4th sem.
I was always afraid that I would spend the rest of my course duration trying to clear backlogs and I would never develop skills required for employment in the industry. Other times, I'm just scared that I will become one of this poor souls with 20+ or 30+ backlogs, who never managed to get a degree.
But then, I would always tell myself that it's okay. From now on, I would work hard. I will make sure I don't add up new backlogs anymore while simultaneously studying to clear old backlogs.
But what happened today, completely shattered my confidence.
Today was our second day of 4th sem final exams and I messed it up. Today we had EMF (electromagnetic field). Day before yesterday was our first exam, it was EVS. It went pretty well.
I had prepared well for my emf exam. I had scored good marks for this subject in both the internal exams. I got 75/100 in 1st internal and 71/100 in 2nd internal but still I messed it up in final exams.
Even the class topper was scratching his head during this exam.
Another thing to mention here is that I have decided to write my backlogs next sem as I had zero time this sem to prepare for backlogs.
This is when my biggest fear flared up.
What if I start to pile up even more backlogs, even if I put the hardwork.
What if I become one of those guys who are stuck with Anna University forever?
What if, even if I manage to clear all backlogs, it would be too late as all my friends from deemed and autonomous institutions would have developed skills and bagged jobs with high package?
I'm envious of my friends who got into IITs, NITs, SRM, Sastra and other autonomous institutions that follow AU syllabus.
Now, you all may say that if I had put hardwork, I could have got into it and my dad would have trusted me enough to let me go to Chennai or Coimbatore to pursue bachelors.
I'm not gonna blame my deteriorated mental health back then but, some of my old schoolmates, who scored way below than me in 12th managed to get into institutions like SRM.
My dad had wished to, he could have also sent me to SRM but, his ego has affected my career very badly.
All of my schoolmates at deemed institutions and autonomous institutions don't have any arrears and are actively working to develop skills required for employment. Many of them are doing projects, internships and freelancing, improving their CV.
I'm afraid I will be left behind. I'm afraid there wouldn't be any future for me.
I just wanna kill myself (sorry if I sound dramatic).
The only way to escape my abusive household is to get a good job but, what if I remain dependent on my parents for the rest of my life.
I often feel powerless and controlless about my own life. I'm tired of my life. Wish mom had aborted me.
I admit the fact that I wasn't very serious with my studies when I joined college but, isn't there anything to fix it? Am I doomed forever?
If I toil away all the hours for backlog prep, when will I have time for skill development?
I sometimes believe that Anna uni affliated colleges only create engineers on paper for name sake. Engineers with zero skills (I'm sorry if I sound stupid here but that's how it all seems to me) what do you all think?
Our college does have campus interviews but most of the companies that come here are start ups.
I don't wanna get into an unorganised startup.
After getting into my college and being part of my house, I know how it feels to be part of something so unorganised and chaotic. I can't do this anymore.
P.S: Sorry for the long rant. Please do shed your opinions.
Tdlr: Thinking of committing suicide cos I have unsupportive parents and backlogs

NUMBER 10: Plaza del Zócalo Officially called Plaza de la Constitución and nicknamed Zócalo, Mexico City’s main square has been a meeting place for Mexicans since the Aztec times. People gather there for ceremonies, royal proclamations, military parades, and even national protests. The site was the main ceremonial center in the pre-Columbian Mexico City called Tenochtitlan. This large and well-developed city-state was built on the island of Lake Texcoco together with another city - Tlatelolco. According to Aztec mythology, it was considered the center of the universe. The nickname Zócalo means "pedestal" or "plinth." A monument to the Mexican independence was planned to be built here but only the base to support the statue called Zócalo was built. The plinth is no longer there, but the name has lived on. You won’t, however, be able to miss a giant Mexican flag placed in the center of the square. Zócalo is home to several important buildings, including the National Palace, the seat of the Mexican government, and the largest Cathedral in Latin America – Mexico City Metropolitan Cathedral, built in segments from 1573 to 1813 around the original church built atop the former Aztec Templo Mayor. While you're in the area, watch Aztec dancers next to the Cathedral that uses inspiration from ancient rituals and traditional dance just outside the cathedral.
NUMBER 9: Templo Mayor Located right next to Zócalo, Templo Mayor or Greater Temple is a vast complex of ruins of religious and civic buildings from the Aztec times. Templo Mayor was the main Temple of the rulers of the Aztec Empire – the Mexica people in their capital city of Tenochtitlan, or what is today known as Mexico City. According to Aztec mythology, the Aztec God of Sun and War Huitzilopochtli ordered his people to establish a new capital in a place where an eagle sits on a cactus, devouring a snake. The seal of the Mexican government represents this legend from Aztec mythology. That legendary location turned out to be a place covered by wetlands. The Temple was built on an island in the 14th century and was destroyed after the Spanish Conquests in the 16th century. The ruins of the temple's exact location was later forgotten, and the excavations was carried out at the end of the 19th century and some parts even in the late 20th century. Visit Templo Mayor Museum, a part of UNESCO World Heritage that showcases archaeological finds and exhibits related to the Aztec civilization. Or if you don’t have time, see the temple from the street above. Don’t skip a disturbing Skull Rack displaying hundreds of stone skulls representing the sacrificial victims to honor the gods and the power of the empire.
NUMBER 8: Xochimilco Xochimilco was the most important city of the Xochimilca people, who first settled in around 900 BC up until it was conquered by the Mexica of Tenochtitlan in the 15th century. Xochimilco is best known for a vast system of around 170 kilometers or 110 mi. of canals, famous for its colorful gondola-like boats called trajineras. Canals of Xochimilco are one of the last traces of a vast water transport system built by the Aztecs. These canals were a part of a massive lake and canal system that connected most of the settlements in the Valley of Mexico. Both canals and the chinampa system of Xochimilco are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The name Xochimilco means "flower field” and describes flowers and other crops grown here. The vegetables, fruits, and flowers were shipped to Tenochtitlan via the canal.
NUMBER 7: Street Food Mexico City's culinary scene offers a wide variety of food options, from affordable street food or antojitos (street snacks or appetizers) to gourmet international and local restaurants. Experience Mexican life through a variety of street food. Try some of the following options: tacos, quesadillas, tamales, chicharrón, machetes, delicious churros, or elotes - a, Mexican street corn topped with mayonnaise, chili powder and others. And if you are up to a challenge, even chapulines or grasshoppers. Don’t skip several important food and artisan markets spread throughout Mexico City, like Mercado de Coyoacán, etc.
NUMBER 6: Torre Latinoamericana Torre Latinoamericana or Latin American Tower, completed in 1956, is a skyscraper in the historic city center of Mexico City. This 166 m or 545 ft high building is one of the city's important architectural attractions was the tallest structure in Mexico until it was surpassed by Torre Ejecutiva Pemex. It is the world's first major skyscraper successfully built on a highly active seismic zone. Torre Latinoamericana survived the 8.1 magnitude earthquake in Mexico City in 1985. Other buildings in downtown were severely damaged. The tower's observation area Mirador Torre Latino offers some of the best panoramic views of Mexico City. Don’t forget to explore Madero Street right below Torre Latinoamericana, a popular and crowded pedestrian area featuring bars, shops, and other attractions. Check our Mexico City 4K walking tour with closed captions to get the full experience. The link is in the description https://amzn.to/3WVsSvh
NUMBER 5: Coyoacán Coyoacán is a bohemian neighborhood located south of the city center. Covered with cobblestone streets and known for its colonial architecture, the name actually derives from the Aztec language, meaning "place of coyotes." The area was used as a headquarters during the Spanish conquest of the Aztec Empire. Coyoacán was the first capital of New Spain. The areas offers many activities and attractions, such as: La Casa Azul, a historic house and an art museum where Mexican artist Frida Kahlo was born and later lived with her husband, Diego Rivera. Mercado de Coyoacán: a traditional market famous for its colors and folklore, selling everything from clothing, plants to various food options and more. Plaza Hidalgo and Jardín Centenario full of colonial landmarks, bars, restaurants, Fuente de los Coyotes, Parroquia San Juan Bautista, beautiful Tranvía Coyoacán and other attractions. Or Plaza de la Conchita with the Chapel of the Immaculate Conception Church, the oldest church in Mexico. NUMBER 4: Bosque de Chapultepec The Chapultepec Forest is one of the oldest urban parks in the world and one of the largest city parks in the Western Hemisphere. Chapultepec functions as the lungs providing oxygen to the Mexico Valley. In the pre-Columbian era, the forest was also a popular retreat for Aztec rulers. The most popular section of Chapultepec is home to popular attractions and activities, including the Museum of Anthropology, botanic garden, a zoo, and an artificial lake. Here, you can rent a boat and enjoy the escape from the busy city streets. There are two other lakes in the second section of the park. Don't skip Chapultepec Castle or The National Museum of History, built in the colonial period. The castle official residence of Mexican heads of state until 1940. It is located at the top of Chapultepec Hill, with amazing views towards Paseo de la Reforma and the rest of the city. Chapultepec served as an important water management system in the pre-Columbian era, featuring an Aztec-built ancient aqueduct. Did you know that the name Chapultepec derives from the Aztec language and translates as Hill of the Grasshopper. Check our travel guide for more beautiful parks suggestions, like an impressive Alameda Central right next to the Palace of the Fine Arts.
NUMBER 3: Museum of Anthropology National Museum of Anthropology is the most visited museum in Mexico, offering the world's most extensive collection of ancient Mexican art, important archaeological and anthropological objects from Mexico's pre-Columbian heritage, like the Stone of the Sun (or the Aztec calendar stone) created in the 16th century. You can walk around the 23 permanent exhibit halls representing the colors and materials related to Teotihuacan, Olmeca, and Maya cultures. Don’t skip the stunning outdoor part of the museum. The building was designed by the architect Pedro Ramirez Vazquez, who also designed other important buildings in Mexico City, like Basilica de Guadalupe or Estadio Azteca. There are many other fascinating museums in Mexico City. Don't skip Voladores De Papantla or Flying Men – an ancient Mesoamerican ritual to ask God to end a severe drought in Tamayo Park close to the museum. NUMBER 2: Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe Basílica de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe is a Roman Catholic church, basilica, and National shrine of Mexico and one of the most important pilgrimage sites of Catholicism. The present church was constructed on an earlier 16th-century church finished in 1709 due to its dangerous sinking foundation, the Old Basilica. The new basilica houses the cloak containing the images of Our Lady of Guadalupe, one of the most important symbols of Mexican faith, based on a series of Marian apparitions in 1531. The basilica is visited by millions of people every year, making it the most visited Catholic shrine in the world. Don't skip the impressive and stunningly landscaped Sagrado Recinto del Tepeyac Garden and explore other impressive sites.
NUMBER 1: Teotihuacán Located about an hour drive from Mexico City, Teotihuacan is a must-see. This ancient Mesoamerican city was probably established around 100 BC, long before the arrival of the Aztecs and its origins are still unknown. Teotihuacan began as a religious center in the Mexican Highlands around the first century AD. It was supposed to be the largest city in the pre-Columbian Americas, with an estimated population of at least 125,000. In the 8th century AD, the city was abandoned, probably because of the extreme weather events in the centuries before. Walk along the Avenue of the Dead and admire the Temple of Quetzalcoatl, the Pyramid of the Sun and the Pyramid of the Moon, apartment compounds, and vibrant murals. Secret tunnels were discovered under the pyramids of the Moon and Temple of the Feathered Serpent. Teotihuacan was a prosperous kingdom and traded with obsidian, used for tools, weapons, and other. Close to the pyramids, you can even experience how people turn volcanic stone into a piece of art, observe the sun, how to use the entire cactus and turn it into a sewing kit, or how they ingeniously colored the sewing thread and used interior parts of the cactus as paper. And here is the bonus that we promised: Don’t leave Mexico without experiencing Mariachi, a genre of regional Mexican music and a symbol of Mexican national identity. Mariachi music as we know it today originated in Jalisco in the 19th century. You can listen to mariachi in various places around Mexico City, like Plaza Garibaldi. Whether you want to follow the footsteps of the Aztecs, experience centuries-old traditions during Día de los Muertos, admire the place where Frida Kahlo lived, immerse yourself in delicious street food, or discover artisan and other markets, there is plenty to do in Mexico City.

2023.06.07 14:59 HomeostasisAchieved Put yourself out there if you want to get into this industry. Now is the time. Here's a slightly edited version of an email I sent to a potential mentor. Take the time and do something similar. It'll pay off eventually. PS We have roles to fill, inquire within.

About Me.
I'm a highly adaptive senior management professorial with 15 years of nomadic leadership experience that includes:
I graduated from Case Western Reserve University in 2008 with degrees in Political Science, Communications, and Sociology. I followed it up with one year of retail management before earning my JD from Ohio Northern. I specialized in nonprofit transactional law and commercial real estate transactions before being admitted to the Ohio bar.

About Us
Veteran Owned. Family Grown. Agora Farms. Minnesota's premier destination for cannabis, concerts and camping located on 26 acres in beautiful Palisade, MN. Honestly, where we will be in 4 to 5 years could vary greatly. We might be limping in as a startup, but the possibility exists where we come out of the gates with massive legitimacy (aka capital). It will be interesting to see what comes to fruition and what gets scrapped. I started our think tank back in December once election polls were tallied and the DFL picked up a majority. Between the 4 of us we have a combined 80 years of personal, professional, and entrepreneurial experience in the cannabis industry.
Our property is secured and owned by a partner willing to partition off sections. Meaning, we can set up a "holding" LLC that houses both our cannabis microbusiness AND we can have a workaround cannabis adjacent portfolio (frisbee golf, small venue, "gifting" CannaCampground, etc). In theory, the latter should be far enough removed from our cannabis operations so that financing options (VA business loan) now become available. Up to 350k to put towards venue, cabins, etc..
Which we will need because all of our capital will be going toward getting our 5k indoor canopy up and operational, followed by our http://Sitkagold.com inspired product line. Our target for the all-weather greenhouse setup and nonvolatile hash operations is estimated at just under 400k. Between 4 of us we have licensing priority, social equity status, and as of now, just under 100k pledged from my friends and family.
Social Equity will bring us up another 50k to 150k via grants. We are hoping to pick up the remainder from my extended family who have shown a pattern in investing large sums in our family businesses (assisted living property management). Not sure how cannabis will fly with them. My Aunts and Uncles just recently reprogrammed from their DARE update in grade school. The end result could be an additional $10k or it could be $500k+ if they get their investment team involved.
Video of property:
https://youtube.com/shorts/ncSQ9o5EyYA?feature=share
Here is our 5 year gameplan in its most basic format for the two ventures + 501c4:
Agora Farms, LLC; will house all our cannabis business ventures
The Agora Campground & Venue, LLC; will house our cannabis adjacent business endeavors
Minnesota's Network of Innovative Cannabis Entrepreneurs; a cannabis nonprofit you and I define together
Mentor, Partner, or both?
Have you ever read the children's book, "If You Give a Mouse a Cookie?" Be warned;
If you mentor me professionally, I will ask you to mentor me politically.
If you mentor me politically, I will ask you to advise our team.
If you advise our team, you will want to join our team.
If you join our team, we will make waves in this industry.
I need a cannabis legislative expert to advise with the formation & structure of our fully endorsed microbusiness and cannabis adjacent portfolio. I have no insight on your current cannabis plans so I'm just going to start off by asking if you'd consider mentoring me professionally & politically?
Professionally, I am going to spend the next 7 years putting together an impressive cannabis portfolio from scratch. Agora Farms, LLC will house all our cannabis ventures. Agora Farms Campground & Events, LLC will hold our cannabis adjacent portfolio.
Politically, I am going to spend the next 2 years butting heads with both anti cannabis lobbyists and incompetent state legislators on both sides of the aisle. However, my main focus will be on removing all the absurd red tape weighing down small business owners in MN's cannabis industry via any means necessary (within the confines of the law). The following 2 years I would like to spend shadowing you as an advocate and lobbyist for the industry. I'll spend 2 years strategizing for a 2 year state senate run leading up to a 2 year campaign for the 2030/2032 election. I'm dead serious. Watching cannabis committee discussions slapped me awake politically.

2023.06.07 14:49 That_Guy_ZiM Looking for ENTFriends

(idk if this kinda post is ok here, I checked rules and it seems like it's ok? Here goes...)
So I'm going through a breakup of a 6 year relationship. I don't have a lot of friends out here, and the few I do have I am not super close to, I am not from Colorado originally and did not put enough work into finding new friends here.
Now that my relationship is over I am wanting to find friends to smoke with. I like to hang out a lot, I am looking for friends that want to be involved in eacothers lives a lot.
About me: I'm 27, leftist politically, I smoke a lot (obvi), I am very deep into Dubstep music and I produce that genre as well. I am a huge computer nerd. I play lots of video games and I I work in IT. I like outside but I'm not a nature freak like a lot of people in co. I can very much be a homebody, and often times I do not want anything to do with going out.
If there's anyone out there that wants to link up for a sesh sometime and see how our chemistry is, PLEASE reach out and we can hang out whenever. I work from home and have a lot of free time so do be shy.
Edit: I am located in Colorado Springs, pretty central of the city.

2023.06.07 14:45 Live_Flower8495 Dr. Kia Pruitt: Gifting GOLD is a Cultural and Religious Tradition

Dr. Kia Pruitt: In recent weeks, the Nation of Islam, a big religious organization within the African American community, bestowed NINETY ounces of GOLD upon their leader, the Honorable Louis Farrakhan for his 90th birthday. This was a monumental gift and a huge statement! Giving gold is a tradition in many religions and cultures, because GOLD is precious. In India, whether in the villages or the city, it is tradition to gift young brides GOLD, because the bride is seen as an embodiment of Lakshmi, the Goddess of prosperity. Furthermore, Gold is a store of immense value. Gold is wealth.
Donald Trump once received 32 Oz of gold from Apmex when the company leased space in one of his towers. He mentioned then that this is is the wave of the future. Why? Gold is real MONEY. Gold maintains it's value and never looses value. Gold is a hedge against inflation and it can be easily liquified, if needed. Silver is the same. Gold and silver are constitutional money and have always been recognized, since pre-biblical times, as MONEY. Therefore one should consider #gold and #silver when considering the times in which we live where countries are leaving the US Dollar and joining #BRICS. This covert agreement to leave the Dollar and join BRICS is known as Project Sandman. According to Project Sandman, when triggered, countries will drop the US Dollar, and rush to gold for trade. Putin was that trigger. When this dropping of the US Dollar happens, the dollar and all dollar denominated assets will plunge to near-zero. Then we will likely experience what Jim Rickards calls an "ice nine" scenario where the entire world will freeze over economically.
In America, state legislatures have removed taxes from the sales of precious metals. Doing so, makes precious metals LEGAL TENDER. Additionally, states have actually passed legislation to make gold/silver legal tender, in alignment with the Constitution which identifies gold/silver as LAWFUL MONEY and the only thing to be used to pay debts. There will be no government-instituted CBDCs (Central Bank Digital Currencies), forced upon us. We the people will not stand for it and neither will our law-makers, which is why many conservative lawmakers have already introduced and/or passed legislation to ban CBDCs and make them UNLAWFIL. It is also the reason that Representative Alexander Mooney (WV), along with Andy Briggs and Paul Gosar (AZ) introduced several bills, (HR 5404, HR 9157, HR 2435) known as the Gold Standard Restoration Act, to define the dollar as a fixed weight in gold and to return us to the gold standard. This is our great nation's response to the tyranny of fake governments which have enslaved us Americans and the entire world by exacting usury upon us and by forcing us to use fiat, backed by no commodities. A debt-based economy is evil, ungoldy and non-biblical.
BRICS, the union made up of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, has already made a tremendous impact, by leaving the US Dollar and allowing other countries to join her. Currently, all exporting nations, reportedly, have joined BRICS, leaving only North America, parts of Canada and Mexico to officially trade with the US Dollar. However, Mexico recently applied to join BRICS! Now America is also leaving the tyranny of the Federal Reserve Central Banks and the draconian/reptilian bloodline families which have enslaved the planet. While most people will not report what is actually going on behind the scenes, a few people, like Bix Weir, Andy Schectman, Dr. Kia Pruitt and other "conspiracy" theorists aka gold bugs can see the handwriting on the wall! The entire world is moving back to the GOLD STANDARD.
As the masses awaken to this news that the entire world has joined BRICS and dropped the US Dollar to use gold/silver and other commodities for trade, they will rush toward gold/silver as safe havens. They will roll their fiat-debt based currency into precious metals, because as the Nation of Islam stated, while bestowing gold upon their leader, gold is precious. Gold never loses its value! Gold is MONEY! The dollar has lost more than 98% of its value. We are almost at near zero. Plus, we WILL have a massive stock market crash, because stocks are tied to the fiat-based system. Is your retirement safe? Remember, Janet Yellen, US Treasury Secretary stated on January 19th, when the US had reached the debt ceiling? She said that the way to make themselves whole is to dip into the RETIREMENT accounts of government and postal workers. Who's next? Speaking of the debt ceiling, lawmakers have been having issues agreeing on whether or not to raise or suspend the debt ceiling. How long can they continue to kick the can down the road? The US is BROKE, bankrupt and defunct, but nobody will say this out loud. The Moors will though. Ask them what's really happening....
Awakened people can see what's happening. We can see the handwriting on the wall. Can you? I see a massive GOLD RUSH: https://rumble.com/v2qyhwn-andy-schectman-gold-rush-bank-failures-debt-ceiling-crises-and-geopolitics-.html

2023.06.07 14:45 Correct_Valuable4090 Profile advice

Profile advice
Hi guys, Wondering if anyone could give any advice on my profile. I am yet to use world packers but the thought of it greatly interests me and the thought of giving back to a community half way across the world from where I reside is great. I am looking to travel south and Central America for around a year starting in September. I have seen a couple of places that I would like to volunteer at and spoke to one of the people who had spent time there. She said she paid almost $700 USD to volunteer at the place. Is this something to expect from most places or was this a rare occasion, she said it was booked through an agency so I was assuming it was them overcharging. Thanks,

2023.06.07 14:28 EatMoreFiber Moving to Norfolk/Hampton Roads? Welcome! Please read this before posting. [2023 edition]

By user request, I'm recreating this thread in an effort to allow /norfolk's members to update & improve the information. Please comment as needed and I'll do my best to revise the main text as quickly as I can. Thanks!
Welcome to /Norfolk! Our subreddit gets a lot of questions about relocating to the area, so be sure to search the subreddit to see if your specific questions have already been answered.
Here's a quick list of the top tips and most frequently repeated advice about moving to the Norfolk/Virginia Beach area:
  • Live on the same side of the water as you work. Our many bridges, tunnels and bridge-tunnels frequently experience heavy traffic volume and become chokepoints even on days without incidents or accidents. Commuting from the Southside (Norfolk/Virginia Beach) to the Peninsula (Hampton, Newport News, Williamsburg) and vice versa is not recommended. Additionally, many water crossings are now or will eventually be tolled. Get an EZ-Pass to pay the lowest rate.
  • This area floods. Look at FEMA flood maps for the area you want to move to and be aware of possibly needing flood insurance. Similarly, our area occasionally experiences hurricanes. Know your Evacuation Zone and learn more about Hurricane Preparations.
  • Hampton Roads has a lot to offer. Obviously there is the beach. But there is also a surprisingly good and growing food & craft beer scene. A great many museums and activities. And an easy drive to the mountains and other major cities. Career wise the medical center is growing year over year, and is only expected to continue expanding into a major hub for the region. Norfolk offers a slightly more urban feel, with lots of great food joints and cultural amenities, all while being walking and bike friendly. Virginia Beach is more suburban in feel, and has a large amount of great neighborhoods at a decent price not too far from the beach. Chesapeake is even more suburban, but more affordable. Suffolk is growing, but still by all rights could be considered mostly rural. (credit to Here4thebeer3232)
  • Check crime reports. Crime can happen anywhere but some areas see more reported incidents than others. Great areas can be adjacent to bad neighborhoods, sometimes separated only by a road or a few blocks. When buying or renting a residence, try to visit the area at different times of day and strike up conversations with locals to get a feel for the location. Use Norfolk's Crime Mapping tool to view crime reports and statistics.
  • Norfolk Neighborhoods of Note
Chelsea/West Ghent: Small former industrial area that is now home to 2 top tier Breweries and is a central part of the Elizabeth River Bike Trail. Has a growing culinary scene. Limited residential options. Colonial Place: Upscale residential neighborhood with waterside access. Flooding is a concern in this area, but neighborhoods are family friendly and homes are gorgeous. Downtown: the urban center of our region. Growing residential population to match established barestaurant, entertainment and financial scenes. East Beach: Newly constructed high end beach condos right on the Chesapeake Bay. Has abundant docking for boats, fishing holes, and beach access. A more quiet and older community. Fort Norfolk: Growing area adjacent to EVMS and Sentara Medical Center. The unofficial midtown of Norfolk, that is slowly becoming a part of the city skyline. Floods often. Freemason: straight-laced & upscale enclave adjacent to downtown and built around cobblestone streets. Ghent: trendy, historic and filled to the brim with character, culture and delicious cuisine. The neighborhood’s main thoroughfare, Colley Avenue, and adjacent 21st and 22nd streets are lined with eclectic eateries, unique shops, art galleries and antique stores. Larchmont: High end homes in a family friendly neighborhood. Adjacent to ODU, but without the noise, Larchmont is home to incredible homes in a very green and quiet part of the city. Also has waterside access. Oceanview: Affordable community right on the beach. Still considered more working class, it is slowly looking to compete with the Virginia Beach Oceanfront as a tourist attraction. Home to the Bold Mariner Brewery and Jessy's Taqueria NEON District: Growing Arts district, adjacent to downtown. Home to a variety of arts shops and artisan restaurants, as well as the Chrysler Museum of Art and the Harrison Opera house. Park Place: Park Place is a historic neighborhood centrally located to the north of Downtown Norfolk. Park Place offers multimodal access to health and fitness facilities, dining, coffee shops, retail, visual art, live music, and community for people from all walks of life. This historic residential neighborhood is a diverse and inclusive community, and is comprised of a mix of single detached houses, condos, luxury, market rate, and affordable rentals homes and apartments. Located between 23rd street and 38th street, and between Granby street on the east, and Colley ave on the west, the Park Place area neighborhood includes two business districts, the 35th Street Business District and the Railroad District, and is walkable to the North Colley, Ghent, and Riverview business districts. Railroad District: Rapidly growing former warehouse district located between Ghent and Park place. Home to the majority of Breweries in the city. While could be considered gentrified, is still home to novel cultural centers such as 757 Makerspace and Nomads Clothing Exchange. Riverview: Immediately adjacent to the Norfolk Zoo and Lafayette park. With waterside access and a small commercial corridor, Riverview is a good area for all ages. Also home to MJs Tavern, the largest LGBT bar in the metropolitan area. St Paul's District: Under construction West Ocean View: Turns into a parking lot for HRBT traffic every time the base lets out. Willoughby Spit: Quiet residential sandbar. Remains somewhat isolated from HRBT traffic, but offers a commanding presence along the Chesapeake Bay.
  • /VirginiaBeach Neighborhoods of Note
Chesapeake/Chic's Beach: "locals only" beachside community. Oceanfront: touristy stretch of beach + boardwalk, hotels, and trinket shops. Town Center: VB's Central Business District including Pembroke Mall and other high-end shopping, dining, and entertainment.
  • Odds & ends
    • Norfolk's hardiness zone is 8a, for any gardeners out there. A bit further west, and you're in 7b.
    • The large military presence means a lot of traffic around 4pm. High school gets out around 2, middle school around 3.
    • There are slow cargo trains going to and from the port. When scoping out neighborhoods, check for tracks nearby, and if there are any bridges or underpasses to help bypass a stopped cargo train. Example: Taussig and Granby, near the post office? If you hear a train, pray that it's a short one, because I haven't found a shortcut there yet.
    • This WeatherSpark page has some useful data on the local climate for anyone particularly interested in our weather patterns. TL;DR, it doesn't really freeze here, but we still get snow every few years. (credit to sin-so-fit)
    • Check out the jet noise map... i've lived here for 30 years and have heard jet noise but we bought before checking and happen to fall right under one of those dark green circles near lynnhaven mall.... they fly 50 fucking ft overhead all day long. walking the dog just a block away and it's a completely different world. https://www.vbgov.com/government/departments/planning/areaplans/Documents/Oceana/JLUSAICUZPlanningMap.pdf (credit to NotEntirelyUnlike)

2023.06.07 14:24 HannoPicardVI Arab refugee shot dead following "road rage" incident in Norwich. Shocked friends say he was a "hard-working man who worked 13 hours a day, seven days a week". Refugee fled Central African Republic after ruling government began to target non-black Arab population and claimed asylum in Britain

The victim of yesterday afternoon's deadly shooting has been named as "Adib Fazal", a 29 year old Arab refugee.
Shortly after midday, Fazal had been on a lunch break and had been driving along the A146 when a collision occurred and an argument ensued. The driver of the car involved in the collision with Fazal's car is then said to have pulled out a handgun and shot Fazal in the head, "killing him instantly" according to police.
"This was an extreme crime and we are still investigating whether there was also a hate crime element to this incident, given the victim's Arab background," DCI Solomons said this morning.
Police confirmed that a 42 year old white male had been taken into custody and charged with reckless driving, possession of an unlicensed firearm and murder.
Friends of Fazal told The Herald of their shock at the news.
23 year old housemate Ella Malden, who lives with Fazal in a shared house in Norwich, told the paper that Fazal was "a very hard-working man who worked 13 hours a day, seven days a week as a tree surgeon in locations across East Anglia and the Midlands" and that he had just received his Level 6 diploma in Advanced Forestry and Advanced Arboriculture from the Chartered Institute of Agroforestry and Arboriculture just days before the shooting. Whilst asylum seekers are not allowed to be in employment whilst their applications are being processed by the Home Office, refugees are allowed to work as much as they want to and are placed in the same tax rate bands as residents and citizens in Britain.
"It's just crazy," she said. "Fazal was a talented tree surgeon and he has been through hell. He fled the Central African Republic after the new black government began to target, persecute and kill the non-black Arab population. His brother was killed as well as his cousins. His mother has also been imprisoned and he was still fighting for her release. He claimed asylum in Britain and his application was accepted and he has been trying to make a life for himself here ever since. He's an even more productive member of society than most born-and-bred Brits I know. I just can't believe he was shot dead over nothing."
Asylum International estimates that more than 21,500 Arab people have been displaced from their homes in the Central African Republic, a landlocked country in central Africa, with more than half of that number escaping to Europe to seek asylum in western European countries. More than 2,700 people - mostly Arabs - have been killed in what UN Secretary-General Timothy Vincent labelled "the worst ethnic violence seen in central Africa in over a decade".
The country's new President, William Djotodia, has also been labelled by world leaders as an "authoritarian dictator" after he conferred extra powers to his position, effectively enabling himself to bypass the requirements for votes in the national senate when making new laws and signing "overreaching" executive orders. A national security executive order for instance, signed by him last year, gave the security services and police extra powers to spy on "at-risk" groups in the population and raid homes and neighbourhoods in "problematic areas" without warrants and detain suspects - mostly of Arab descent - indefinitely and without requirements for charges to be brought within a certain period of time. Djotodia's rhetoric has been described as "vitriolic" and "evil" after he said "Arab people are not African; they should not even be in this country".
Relations with the Arab world also reached an all-time low last year after Djotodia ordered the shootdown of a Global Emirates cargo plane which had deviated slightly off course on a preplanned route. The CAF government insisted that the modified 747 cargo plane, which had flown out of Riyadh in Saudi Arabia and had been bound for the CAF capital, became "unresponsive" following a course deviation and following the shootdown, Djotodia quickly declared the airspace closed to cargo planes flying from 6 Middle Eastern countries, shortly before countries such as Saudi Arabia, Jordan and the UAE issued an advisory to freight companies and other businesses advising them that the airspace over the Central African Republic was "unsafe" and the "threat of a shootdown was high".
Meanwhile, the accused of yesterday's shooting is expected to appear before magistrates in Norwich Magistrates' court tomorrow morning where he will be named and asked to confirm his date of birth and address and be asked to enter a plea before the case will then be escalated to the Crown Court for a jury trial or sentencing, given the serious nature of the crimes he is accused of. He is not expected to be granted a bail hearing, given the serious nature of the crime.

2023.06.07 14:03 QuiscoverFontaine Two Strangers Far From Home

Merv’s dull clamour reaches always her first when she arrives, followed closely by the smell; the air dark with the press of tired bodies and smoke and camels. Nisa is grateful that money has no smell else the town would be unbearable.
As always the central market is a deafening forum of voices, every trader trying to argue their way to prosperity. A heaving throng of faces and languages and manner of dress, but all still people just like her. Citizens of nowhere but the roads, of only the spaces between cities.
Among them all, a man catches her eye. The red dust of the road is still caught in his dark hair, his manners conscious and practised, his clothing incongruous even here.
He and Nisa make their trades in fractured sentences with words borrowed from a language neither of them speaks with any fluency. Two strangers both so far from home. Purple dye and red lacquer, gold cloth and bronze mirrors, statues of gods she recognises exchanged for gods she doesn’t. Goods that have been already passed along a relay of dozens of hands passed on once more.
Nisa cannot quite say what it is about him. Perhaps it’s his patience, or that he doesn’t try to cheat her out of a fair deal like so many others. Perhaps it’s the way his expression lifts when his eyes meet hers. Or the way he returns her smile. Or that she allows his hands to linger too long on hers.
They linger after their business is complete, both lacking the words to articulate what lay between them. There is colour in his cheeks. Nisa’s heart is galloping in her chest.
***
It is months before she returns to Merv, arriving heavy with a cargo of gold, wine, raw glass and tempered expectations.
Nisa had thought of him often during her journey there and back again when she had nothing but time as her companion. What might be. The small, warm spark of possibility climbing up into a blaze then settling into low, glowing embers and then down to smouldering ashes.
It had been nothing, she convinces herself. Only a passing politeness and no more. He will have forgotten her in an instant, and she will never see him again. Small mercies.
And yet he is there once more. His face calls out to her from the shifting masses like a beacon, his eyes alight with his recognition of her.
And the sight of him again reminds her that dying embers can still light a fire.
Had he waited for her? Or is this fate?
‘Come with’ he whispers to her that evening, wrapping his warm hands around hers. And in that moment, she is tempted. This is the furthest east she has ever travelled, has never dared leave the familiar safety of Parthia. There is still much further to go.
But would be madness. She hardly knows this man, can barely speak to him. Besides, she has already sold on her Western goods; there will be no market for the heavy silks she just bought back where they came from.
‘Next time. Perhaps,’ she tells him, unsure whether she has missed an opportunity or avoided a mistake. He nods and presses her fingertips to his lips, and her doubts disappear once more.
***
There is no sign of him the next time Nisa returns. She searches through the markets while refusing to trade on her wares, fearful of stumbling into the same mistake as before. New caravans of traders arrive from the east every day, but his face is not among them.
Fate indeed.
What a fool she was to think that he alone might be something solid in a world where nothing is fixed in place. The cities forever full of unfamiliar faces, a different camel at every trading post, always carrying things she cannot keep with only a bag of mismatched coins from places she’s never seen to show for it.
She could give up, go back to Ctesiphon and its comfortable memories. But how long would that last, with the Romans eyeing its walls like hungry wolves, seeking to swallow it whole as they do everywhere else within their reach?
All she has now with any certainty is the same stretch of road back and forth and back again, and the point outside Nishapur where she buried her husband too many years ago.
And certainty in herself.
When the new day begins, cold and clear, Nisa packs her new camel with her unsold goods—the same eastern silk unpicked and rewoven to a fine sheer veil as if it were something new—and joins the next caravan heading east to Bukhara.
There are half a hundred reasons why she’ll likely never see her stranger again. No matter. There’s no use waiting.

NYC flunks economics 101 - is this why our taxes and deficits are out of control?

Photo above - discarded crack pipes made from ordinary household trash. Can't we do better? Not shown - NYC's free vending machines, with made-in-America corporate crack pipes.
NYC unveils vending machine for drug users, with free crack pipes and Narcan for ODs Fox News
Being a politician is a job with no credentials required. No college education. Knowledge of history not needed. Never had any economics training? - Okay! Not even basic math. All you need to do is convince enough people to vote for you.
As exhibit A, I submit New York City's latest brainstorm – free vending machines for crack pipes and Narcan. See link above. There's so much wrong here, I don't know where to begin.
First off – common sense. If you had just $1 left in your bank account (NY is, in fact, having a budget crisis), would you blow it on crack pipes? Or possibly something more relevant . . . like fire inspections, subway repairs, or public school infrastructure? Obviously, the guys who dreamed up the crack pipe machines have never seen an apartment fire, ridden on the subway, or have any kids in public schools.
Is the concept behind free crack pipes something like this: addicts wouldn't be unable to afford to purchase a pipe after making a drug buy? A subsidy to help dealers keep crack prices high? In any case, the last time anyone checked, you could get all the discarded crack pipes you wanted in Central Park, or in the subway. Maybe even school playgrounds . . .
Perhaps elected officials are trying to get out in front of a future problem. With all the drug cartel members crossing the border, at least SOME of them are going to find their way to NYC. This means more crack and fentanyl on the streets. Shouldn't we make sure there are enough pipes, to surf the wave of drug buys? The last thing New Yorkers want to see is some alarming TV report on the shortage of crack pipes. They would certainly hold city hall responsible for that, right?
Free Narcan in these very same crack-a-cola vending machines? In case you're not familiar, Narcan is a miracle drug that brings overdosed people back from a near-death experience. And it really works too. But like most pharmaceuticals in America, it can get pricey. A police department near me (Florida) reported recently that they had a Narcan SHORTAGE, because it costs hundreds per dose. And if you don't store NARCAN properly, or administer it correctly, it's worthless. So yes, but all means, let's put Narcan in free vending machines. Where someone can steal it – and sell it to police departments and concerned parents in other states.
How does someone even COME UP with the idea of crack pipe vending machines, free or otherwise? Does a city official tell his minions to draft an RFP – request for proposal – and start mailing it out to soda and chip machine vendors? “Gentlemen! Could you build these, and if so how much would each cost? We anticipate buying hundreds.” Or did a politician with ties to a vending machine racket – er I mean entrepreneur – get approached by the machine guys? Is this a scheme by politicians to steer money to their vending pals? If so, politicians should expect contributions from vending guys during the next election. Insist on it, even.
Giving away Narcan alongside crack pipes is like bundling free Band-Aids and switchblade knives together. It might seem even handed to someone unfamiliar with knives, but in the end you'll need an endless supply of Band-Aids.
My dad only got as far as a high school diploma, but he was a smart guy. He told me “if you subsidize something, you get more of it. If you tax it, you get less of it." In a nutshell that's economics 101. NYC has decided to subsidize crack pipes and raise taxes on legitimate citizens. Can you guess how this turns out . . .?

Warning for Potential Renters
As lots of leases are up in August and people are looking for places close to RIT, wanted to warn you guys of a rental property close to RIT that I suffered living in has a lot of issues so hopefully you can avoid. The house is by the Tap It Bar and Grill, 12 Harold Ave.
Issues include:
  1. mice/bug problem (due to age of house and lack of repairs - all screens in all the windows have holes which were covered with tape from previous tenants, front door isn’t flush with ground so there’s a huge gap that lets bugs in, tons of holes in the walls in the laundry room), bathroom has chronic drain fly issue
  2. Heat/insulation issue - heat smells terrible when being used, like moldy laundry that was left in the washing machine for days, and it will cost you $$$. The RGE bills in winter were $200-400 because the house is so poorly insulated (laundry room for example before 2nd bathroom was put in had spots for two windows that were boarded up with plywood so tons of heat was lost from that room), old leaky windows, etc.
  3. No central AC
  4. General disrepair - bathroom has broken medicine cabinet with rusty exposed nails, flooring is moldy and peeling in bathroom, skylight upstairs leaks
  5. Landlords will do appliance repairs but always replace broken appliances with used ones from Facebook marketplace. Had 2 washing machines break and the third replacement one was one that was recalled because of an issue with the lid coming off during the wash cycle and causing potential injury
I have pics on my old phone will try to find them to attach

2023.06.07 13:08 iconichal Confused between new Magnite base model vs 2020 Swift Zxi

Hey lovely people of this community!
So I finally decided to get a car. It is worth noting that this is going to be my first car and is going to be shared with my brothers - one of them knows how to drive but the other doesn't (just letting you know if that makes any difference in the decision making)
Now coming to the problem: I have two options. Until today, I was going with 2020 Swift Zxi that is clocked at 5k, getting it for 6.3lac. Decided to go with this as it got all the fancy features such as
It seemed like a complete package to me with only android auto, apple carplay missing which is something I can always go with aftermarket solution later.
But then someone confused me by showing their Nissan Magnite base model. The guy had an audio system, central locking, arm rest installed from aftermarket.
Nissan Magnite is available for around 6.65lac (base model). So yeah now I am confused. Does it make sense to go with the new vehicle i.e. Magnite or the old one i.e. Swift.
I was about to finalize the Swift today but now not sure what to do.
I am turning to you guys for your opinion so please help me out here and drop your thoughts or suggestions.
Thanks a lot

2023.06.07 13:00 AutoModerator What Could it Be Wednesday 06/07/2023

Alright folks, it's that time of the week again, so let's get ready fooooor...

WHAT COULD IT BE WEDNESDAY!

Alright folks, now rules are simple for this, as this is just gonna be a fun little game for this sub for suit predictions for tonight's banner.
Now, as for the prize... seeing as how I'm not exactly flush with disposable income outside of being able to afford a gunpla hobby and my gaming stuff... anyone who gets it right will be able to request a user-flair with an ace nickname of their own design. If you can't think of one, just DM me a screenshot of your best game or tell me your favorite unit, map, and what UC faction you love the most and I'll think of something for you. Obviously, I won't participate myself since I already have an Ace nickname... and I'm a mod, so I can just change my user flair whenever the hell I want to anyway.
Of course, if you've won one of these already, I'll still reward you with a change to your user flair by adding a 'kill' tally to your flair. Every time you get it right after earning your flair, you'll get how many times you guessed correctly recorded, so it'll look like 'User Flair Name - 2' if you've got 2 right, etc, etc.
Now get to guessing folks! Let's see if anyone is earning an ace distinction this week, and yes, you need to get both the suit and the type (General/Raid/Support) correct for it to count.

2023.06.07 12:02 positraceseo GPS Fleet management and tracking solution

Introduction

As a business owner, you know how important it is to keep track of your fleet vehicles. Not only do you want to ensure the safety of your drivers and cargo, but you also want to optimize routes and reduce costs. This is where GPS Fleet management and tracking solutions come in! With advanced technology at your fingertips, you can monitor your entire fleet in real-time, improve driver behavior, and increase efficiency. In this blog post, we'll explore everything you need to know about GPS Fleet management and why it's an essential tool for any modern business with a vehicle-based operation.

What is GPS Fleet management and tracking solution ?

GPS Fleet management and tracking solution is a technological tool that enables fleet managers to monitor their vehicles' location, speed, fuel consumption, and driver behavior in real-time. This system employs the use of GPS technology integrated with software applications to help businesses manage their fleets efficiently.
The use of GPS Fleet management systems has become increasingly popular over the years due to its ability to provide accurate data about fleet operations. It allows companies to track their vehicles remotely from anywhere in the world, giving them access to valuable information about their business operations.
With this system in place, businesses can optimize routes for drivers and avoid traffic congestion by monitoring live traffic updates. Additionally, they can identify any unsafe driving habits or practices such as speeding or harsh braking which could lead to accidents on the road.
GPS Fleet management systems are an essential tool for businesses looking to improve operational efficiency while reducing costs associated with vehicle maintenance and fuel consumption.

Benefits of GPS Fleet management and tracking solution

GPS Fleet management and tracking solution is a viable option for businesses that depend on the transportation of goods, equipment or people. It provides several benefits to fleet owners, including increased efficiency, reduced costs and improved safety.
One of the most significant advantages of GPS Fleet management is its ability to enhance productivity by optimizing routes. The system can quickly identify shorter routes with less traffic, reducing travel time and fuel consumption. This translates into faster delivery times, higher customer satisfaction rates and lower operating expenses.
Additionally, GPS monitoring allows fleet managers to track driver behavior in real-time. They can enforce safe driving practices such as maintaining speed limits and avoiding harsh braking or acceleration. Furthermore, they can identify drivers who may require additional training or support to improve their performance.
Another benefit of GPS Fleet management is asset protection against theft or unauthorized use. Geofencing technology alerts fleet managers when vehicles enter restricted areas outside working hours or deviate from predefined routes. This feature helps prevent vehicle misuse which ultimately reduces insurance premiums.
GPS monitoring helps companies comply with regulatory requirements such as Hours-of-Service regulations mandated by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). By ensuring that drivers take mandatory breaks during long journeys,it prevents fatigue-related accidents while minimizing legal liabilities for non-compliance
In conclusion,GPS Fleet Management has become an indispensable tool for organizations seeking greater control over their fleets’ operations through better route optimization, safety measures, and cost savings opportunities

How does GPS Fleet management work?

GPS Fleet management works by using a GPS tracking device installed in each vehicle of a fleet. These devices transmit location data to a central server, which analyzes the data and provides real-time information on the whereabouts of each vehicle.
The GPS tracking device uses satellite technology to determine its precise location, speed and direction. This information is then sent via cellular or satellite network to the central server where it's stored and analyzed.
Fleet managers can access this information through an online dashboard or mobile app. They can monitor their fleet's activity, track routes taken by drivers, view fuel consumption rates and other important metrics that help them optimize their operations.
This system also allows for geofencing which means setting up virtual boundaries around certain areas on a map. When vehicles enter or exit these zones, alerts are triggered notifying managers immediately so they can take appropriate action if needed.
GPS Fleet management helps businesses streamline their operations resulting in improved efficiency and productivity while reducing costs associated with excessive fuel usage, maintenance requirements or unauthorized usage among others.

Features of GPS Fleet management

GPS Fleet management solutions come with a variety of features that can help to improve fleet efficiency and reduce costs. One of the key features is real-time tracking, which allows fleet managers to monitor vehicles and assets in real-time using GPS technology. This makes it easy to keep track of drivers' locations, speed, and other important information.
Another important feature is route optimization, which helps to reduce fuel consumption by identifying the most efficient routes for drivers to take. This can also help to minimize vehicle wear and tear, reducing maintenance costs over time.
In addition, many GPS Fleet management solutions offer driver behavior monitoring tools that allow fleet managers to monitor driving habits such as speeding or harsh braking. By helping drivers adopt safer driving practices, this feature can contribute towards lower accident rates and fewer insurance claims.
Advanced platforms may also include geofencing capabilities - setting predefined boundaries within a given area- where alerts are sent when a vehicle enters or exits these areas. Additionally temperature sensors can be used via IoT devices in refrigerated transportation scenarios for added compliance measures ensuring cold chain integrity throughout the journey until delivery at destination.
These features make GPS Fleet Management an invaluable tool for businesses looking to optimize their fleets while maintaining safety standards

Case Studies

Case Studies
Real-life examples are always useful in understanding how GPS fleet management and tracking solutions can help businesses. Case studies provide valuable insights into the challenges faced and the benefits gained by companies that have implemented these solutions.
One such example is a construction company that was struggling with managing its large fleet of vehicles spread over various job sites. With GPS fleet management, they were able to monitor their vehicles’ locations in real-time, ensuring efficient routing and timely delivery of materials. They also reduced fuel consumption through optimized routes resulting in significant cost savings.
Another case study involves a transportation company that had difficulty maintaining a consistent level of customer service due to frequent breakdowns and delays caused by vehicle maintenance issues. By implementing GPS tracking devices on their trucks, they could perform proactive maintenance checks before an issue turned into downtime. This reduced repair costs while improving customer satisfaction rates.
Case studies demonstrate how GPS Fleet management and tracking solution can benefit businesses across different industries by reducing costs, increasing efficiency, improving safety standards, strengthening compliance measures while enhancing overall productivity levels.

Conclusion

GPS Fleet management and tracking solution is a must-have technology for businesses that use fleets of vehicles. It provides numerous benefits such as increased efficiency, productivity, safety, and cost savings. With GPS Fleet management systems in place, managers can monitor their fleet's location, speed, fuel consumption and maintenance needs in real-time.
