I platinummed Sly Cooper 4: Thieves in Time on VITA to get the secret ending.
2023.05.30 22:08 coolwali I platinummed Sly Cooper 4: Thieves in Time on VITA to get the secret ending.
Hello everyone. I recently platinummed the PSVITA version of Sly Cooper 4: Thieves in Time as my 28th platinum. It only took me 10 years, 4 weeks, 22 hours to do it. Did you know this game hides its true ending behind the platinum?
Anyway, I'd like to talk about the experience.
Sly 4 was a bit confusing and inconsistent to platinum. I get the feeling the game wants you to platinum it given how on every loading screen it shows you how much you've completed the trophies and collectibles for the game. And that there no missable trophies. But there are some decisions that don't help with that.
So I'd say there are around 3 groups of Trophies in this game.
The first group are the mandatory story trophies. Not much to say about these. There's nothing missable here and the names are quite cool. I do like looking at the percent completion to see how many players completed the PS VITA version of the game. Did you know that around 73% of players booted this game up and completed the prologue? And only around 25% of players even beat the game. The biggest drop happened around the start of Episode 2 since the completion dropped from around 60%to 48% for some reason.
The second group are the trophies for the collectibles and arcades. I'll talk about these later.
The third and final group of trophies are for miscellaneous challenges. I'll start with these first and highlight some of the notable ones that I missed on my first playthrough.
"Crazed Climber - Scale the dragon lair in under 90 seconds". This was one I missed during my original playthrough of the game. This requires you to climb a giant tower filled with traps in the mission "Mechanical Menace". And this one was really fun even though it took me like 3 attempts. Sly 4's movement and platforming is quite fun so having a mini speedrun challenge using Sir Galleth's moveset was a treat. The one criticism I have here is that the game drops a checkpoint as soon as you get to the top. If you haven't gotten the trophy by then and need to retry, you need to quit to the main menu/hideout and reselect the mission, skip through all the cutscenes and get back there which gets annoying. At least the tower is near the start of the mission.
"Ancient Warfare 3 - Crackshot 10 enemies within 65 seconds. Sly's ancestor, Tennessee "Kid" Cooper" has an ability similar to "Dead Eye" from Red Dead Redemption where he can slow down time, mark enemies and objects and then instantly shoot them dead called "Crackshot". I never got this trophy when I first played the game because there wasn't much opportunity to. There aren't large groups of enemies wandering around that you can casually get 10+ of them line up for you to shoot them. Plus, I was already good at shooting them normally. I tried running around in the open world trying to lure enemies but found it wasn't working. There's a mission in the game called "Blind Date" that throws lots of rabbit enemies that chuck TNT at you that worked better for me.
"Hubba Hubba - Don't miss a beat in the Carmelita dance game." This trophy is, without a doubt, the main reason to platinum this game on VITA instead of the PS3. So nobody can see you play this dumb minigame and call you a Furry. This trophy requires you to complete the minigame where Carmilita needs to disguise herself as a belly dancer and dance to distract guards while the Cooper gang try and open a door. You just need to hit the button prompts perfectly. So you can ignore the times the minigame asks you to shake the VITA from side to side like a champagne bottle to make Carmilita shake her ass (seriously, why does this game sexualize Carmilita so much? None of the past Sly games did it).
"Get To the Chopper - Don't take any damage during Up In Smoke." This one was actually fun. In the mission "Up in Smoke", you have to control an RC Helicopter and drop bombs on turrents while drones and mines chase you down. It was fun dodging and weaving through them. There are 3 phases to this mission and you have a checkpoint in between every phase. So if you mess up, you can just restart the checkpoint to the last phase. You don't need to avoid taking damage the whole way through which is nice.
"Unexpected Package - Place 60 bombs in enemy pockets with Bentley." When I first saw this trophy, I groaned. This would be a massive grind. And I had actually made it harder on myself. You see, normally, when you sneak up behind an enemy as Bentley and hold triangle, Bentley will try to put a bomb in the enemy's pocket. Larger enemies won't notice this but smaller enemies will. But the main issue is that I had previously unlocked the Heat Seeking upgrade for Bentley. Meaning sometimes, the bombs would "miss" and stick to an enemy guard's arms or legs instead. So it was annoying going around the hub world and planting bombs on guards.....until I remembered that I had purchased the upgrade for sleep bombs. My plan now was just to find a lone guard on a rooftop, try and place one sleep bomb into his back pocket and detonate it. He'd then fall asleep. Then I'd go to his sleeping body and try placing 5 sleeping bombs in his pocket and back away (the max you can place at any one time). When he wakes him, I'd detonate all 5 which set him to sleep and then repeat. Even if I'd "miss" a few bombs that would stick to their legs instead, I generally 3 or 4 bombs work perfectly. So it didn't take long to get all 60.
"Apollo Wins - Have the perfect workout during the Training Montage." During the mission "Getting Stronger", you have to do a training montage with Bob where you alternate through 6 minigames as you complete them with the minigames getting harder as you complete them. The trophy requires you to complete 10 randomly selected minigames without making a single mistake. If you mess up, you can restart the checkpoint to the beginning of the montage and have to play through a new set of 10 randomly selected minigames. The Minigames are "Slippery Slope" where you balance an egg on a beam using motion controls while penguins jump around on the floating iceberg you are standing on. "Penguin Popper" where Penguins are diving in front of you and you have to play baseball using them. "Sumo Slap" where you have to perform QTEs to push a giant penguin out of a Sumo Ring. "Duck and Cover" where penguins get launched at you from 4 different directions and you have to move the left stick to dodge them. "Super Sling" which requires you to use a catapult to launch a penguin at a flying pterodactyl. And "Whack a chump" which is Whack a Mole but with penguins. Some of which are fake and you should avoid.
Penguin Popper was easy. Once you get the timing down it's easy to get into a rhythm and hit the penguins since they don't vary when they dive. Whenever this popped into the rotation, I considered it a freebie. Sumo Slap was extremly easy. The button mashing was extremely generous. This was another freebie. Duck and Cover requires a bit more focus because of the timing and inconsistent patterns. It's not too challenging. Interestingly, I noticed that the VITA's speakers would reflect if the penguin was coming from the right or left but not above or below you. I guess headphones would make this easier but I had no need for it. I was generally glad when this popped up in the rotation. Whack a Chump was a bit harder than Penguin Popper because there is no set pattern and the additional challenge of not hitting the fake penguins. But it wasn't too bad. I was glad when this popped up in the rotation.
Super Sling and Slippery Slope were the 2 I dreaded and the ones I messed up the most on. Super Sling doesn't give you much indication of where your sling will go. The Pterodactyls have varied speeds so you can't rely on pattern recolonization and reactions. And there's time pressure as taking too long counts as a miss. And it kept popping up in the rotations for some reason!
Slippery Slope was stressful because of the motion controls and how wild later versions of it were.
"The Cooper Open - Have a 20 hit rally with Bentley in each hideout." There are 6 hideouts in the game. In each hideout there is a table tennis table where you as Sly can play a round of table tennis with Bentley. I question the inclusion of it but I suppose it can be a nice distraction. This trophy requires you get a sequences where both you and Bentley hit the ball back and forth 10 times each (or 20 times overall) without missing. And repeat for each of the 6 tables. I found Bentley kept messing up so I had to intentionally hold back and avoid making good shots and try and hit the ball towards him. The main issue is the fact you have to repeat it 6 times. I feel it would be better off just once and as nothing is really added by doing it 6 times. If anything, it's more annoying given the long load times to switch hideouts and Bentley's random AI.
"Hassan Would Be Proud - Pickpocket a full collection of every item in the game." Each of the 6 or so locations have around 3-4 items that can be pickpocketted from guards. The main issue with this trophy is that it doesn't keep track of which items you have already pickpocketed in any way. The game already tracks how many treasures and masks you've found per general area but not pickpocketted items.
I only got this trophy by planning on systematically going through every location in the game and pickpocketting every enemy item and noting down which ones I found.....only to get it in the first level when I used Murray's shake move on some rat enemies. Enemies that you never encounter or have a reason or opportunity to naturally pickpocket. I guess 2013 me had already gotten 99% of these items previously.
"Navigate Like Drake - Take a look at every map in every episode". I found this trophy really annoying. The way it works is that every location in the game, including linear interiors that are exclusive to missions and even the hideouts, have a map you can look at by pressing SELECT. The game doesn't keep track of which locations you've seen the map of. So I had to systamatically play the game from the first mission and press SELECT whenever I entered a new interior. Then quit out and play the next mission and repeat. It popped for me in Episode 4 so somehow, 2013 me had looked at all the maps in Episode 5 without realizing it.
I don't like this trophy. It doesn't really add anything. The player would already be looking at the maps in the hub worlds where they would be at their most useful since those are open world sections. They have no real reason to use the map in linear interiors. And even less useful in hideouts as these aren't even explorable. They are basically just menus that happen to have a 3D background. I'd be more forgiving of this trophy if the map showed collectibles at least. That way, players have more of a reason to use this feature.
Shout out to the Lazy Trunk Spa & Lounge. A secret area in the game that contains a mask collectible and counts for the trophy with a unique map. No mission ever goes here. So even if you were to play diligently and open the map for every area you encounter, you'd still miss this. I only knew this existed because the trophy guide I looked at told me about it so I decided to tag this area while doing the "Get to the Chopper" trophy.
"Hero Tech - Battle with a secret weapon" Once you collect 50 Sly masks. You unlock Ratchet's wrench from Ratchet and Clank. This weapon even turns the coins you collect into bolts. Collecting 60 Masks unlocks Cole's Amp from inFAMOUS. This can electrocute the enemies you hit. I chose to use Cole's Amp to get the trophy as a tribute to inFAMOUS. Killed by Ghost of Tsumia đ. May it rest in peace. Gone too soon.
That covers all the miscellaneous trophies. Now for the collectibles and arcades.
Sly 4 has a bunch of different collectibles scattered in each of its 6 episodes.
Bottles: Each hub world contains 30 bottles. Collecting all of them gives you access to unlock a safe hidden somewhere in the hub world. Unlocking that safe rewards you a special treasure. Bottles make a "clinking" sound when you're near them so if you're having a hard time finding them, try going into the game's settings and turning down the music and voice sounds. If you find the safe in Episode 3, the special treasure it gives you will highlight bottles and safes in every other episode on your map which is quite nice. I wish the game did this more often. If it hides collectibles from the player, at least give the player an endgame ability to highlight them. It makes it more feasible and fun to complete these tasks instead of combing every last inch (or looking up a guide).
Treasures: Each hub world has around 11 treasures scattered all around. The gimmick here is that in order to collect them, you first need to find where they are in the hub world. Then once you pick them, you need to race back to your hideout under a certain time limit and without taking any damage. If you mess up, you need to repeat the process. The treasures generally require you to have all of Sly's costumes. And a couple require you to be playing as Sir Galleth because England has increased gravity for some reason. Some of these treasures are really well hidden. Requiring you to go to these holes in the middle of nowhere which then require you to switch between some of Sly's costumes. Like, if you open the map when picking some of these up, you'll find Sly is located beyond the borders of the area.
I found it way more fun to race back to the hideout than actually finding them. It was tedious to find many of them because of how well hidden they are. There is no tool or item in the game that can help mark them on your map. Well, I say that. Supposedly, if you have both the PS3 and VITA versions of the game and play them at the same time, you can use the VITA like a scannebinoculars to locate these treasures. And then use the Cross Save feature to nab them in both versions. I only have the VITA version so no luck for me. Again, I'd argue it would be better if there was an endgame upgrade or tool you could get that would mark the treasures like how the game does it for bottles. There isn't even a "clinking sound" or any help for these.
Anyway, collecting all the treasures for an episode unlocks the arcade machine minigame for that episode.
Also sidenote, but this game has the worst map screen that still somehow can be useful. The map gives a top down view of the area but with a blue filter. This makes it harder and more annoying to navigate and use landmarks for reference. Especially on the VITA with its smaller screen. There are also no icons on the map (aside from bottles, safes and objectives) or the ability to make your own markers. The VITA version makes it worse as you can't even use the buttons to navigate the map. You have to use the touchscreen even though that's not how it is in the PS3 version. But you can still use it to know where you are and where collectibles can be from guides. It's technically readable and useful but just barely. I've never seen a map in a game so perfectly walk the line between useful and annoying.
The next collectible are Sly Masks. There are 60 total and around 11 per Episode. Collecting them unlocks skins and some goodies. But the catch with them is that they can be anywhere. There can be a couple in the hub world. But also couple during select missions and even some in the arcade minigames. There's no way to know where any of them are. They generally tend to be really well hidden even if you are trying to scour every area.
Again, I wish there was a way to highlight them. The game's long load times make it a chore to switch episodes or missions so it's tedious to try searching for them manually.
Now it's time to talk about the arcades. Sly 4 has 3 arcade minigames that are used in both the main missions and have a harder version in the arcades in hideouts. The arcade versions of these minigames are harder, go on for much longer and can have secret paths that lead to portals that reward you with points and some of them even have Sly masks. You need to beat the high scores to get the trophies
The first minigame is "Alter Ego". This has you play this 2D auto scrolling twin stick shooter minigame where you must avoid enemies and collect these "ionic bits". Collecting 5 yellow bits levels you up so your weapons get more powerful. At level 10 you have shoot crazy fast, can launch missiles and have floating drones that can damage enemies around you. But whenever you take damage, you drop an entire level. And you get left behind as the level autoscrolls, you respawn at level 0. You can also collect blue bits which can give you a grenade explosion around you.
Personally, I don't really like this minigame. It's fine when playing casually as a change of pace but grinding the high score isn't great. Since it is an autoscroller it is entirely possible you don't have enough points to match the high score and you won't know until its too late, wasting your time. I also found the hitboxes a bit too small. Making items more annoying to pickup.
The key to success is finding the right balance between collecting yellow bits as they give points and level you up (and how high your level is acts as a multiplier for your score) and killing enemies since they give more points. As well as avoiding taking damage and maintaining level 10 as much as possible and knowing where the secret paths are so you can get more points as well as level up if you have messed up.
The second minigame is "System Cracker". Here, you guide a little space ship looking thing through 2D levels in top down twin stick shooting sections. This isn't an autoscroller. You need to explore levels looking for keys and shooting enemies. There are 3 ships you can switch between by going onto specific coloured pads and each ship has its pros and cons. The green ship you start with does decent damage and has decent health and can carry keys. So it's a jack of all trades master of none kinda ship. The pink ship literally resembles a tank. It fires slower and at a shorter range but does more damage and has more health. It's also necessary for destroying pink crystals to progress. The blue ship has floatier handling and faster speeds. Its shots also bounce off walls and it can draw a line which can activate switches and damage enemies. It is weaker than the green ship though.
I actually really enjoyed this minigame and was happy whenever it comes up. It even feels the most fleshed out of the 3. Like, I feel it could even be released as a small standalone game with some tweaking and expansion. I'd probably play a mobile version of this in my free time.
I like how varied the levels can be. You can have a lot of different threats and mini-puzzles and even scenarios where you have to keep switching between ships on the fly to damage enemies. Like, there's this one enemy that's made up of orange, blue and pink hexagons that require you to switch between all 3 ships and use their abilities to damage it. It's quite fun. Damage one ship takes is "saved" on that ship. So if you take 50% damage with the green ship and switch to the pink one, the pink one will have 100% health. But whenever you switch back to the green one, you will be back at 50% health. So mistakes have consequences requiring you to make decisions accounting for them without being too overbearing.
Beating the high scores for the associated arcades is very easy. For one, there is no time limit or pressure so youâre free to take your time and play carefully. On top of that, the mode is very generous with points. Whereas Alter Ego only gives you points for killing enemies and picking up bits (and you need to get and maintain a multiplier for decent times), System Cracker gives you points even for shooting obstacles and barricades in your way. In Alter Ego, I was scraping for points until the very end. In System Cracker, I had more than enough points by the halfway mark.
I suppose the game could have balanced this by increasing the points threshold and rewarding extra points for taking less time to complete sections but Iâm not complaining.
The third and worst minigame is âSpark Chaserâ. Here you must guide a little electric ball across these maze like areas with gaps that end your attempt if you fall down them and these pinball like bounce pads that bounce you really far. Thereâs also a time pressure. You have around 20 seconds to get as far as possible with more time added as you pick up these purple clock icons.
The biggest issue is that itâs entirely controlled by motion controls. And this makes me experience worse on VITA. Seriously, I very nearly quit playing. This post was almost titled âI gave up trying to Platinum Sly 4â.
With the PS3 version, at least titling the remote doesnât also affect your view of the screen. You can look at the game and play it the same as you normally would. But in the VITA version, the âneutralâ position where no input is registered by the system is placing the VITA flat with its screen facing up. The standard âscreen facing youâ position registers as down.
The end result is a frustrating experience. This minigame requires really fine precision given how easy it is to fall off and the time pressure requires you both be fast and more precise to collect time pickups. On top of that, your view is constantly being messed with due to how much you need to tilt the system from odd angles. Especially how tilting âupâ really makes it hard to see. Oh, and the dialogue from Bentley as you bounce gets really annoying and repetitive.
Itâs barely tolerable in regular missions since those donât require as much precision or speed. And even then, the usage there in 2013 was suspect to begin with. I only completed this because thereâs a cheese where if you can get enough time early on, you can then keep bouncing on certain pads which give around 20 points per bounce. When I played ânormallyâ, Iâd get around 300 points with the high score being 1000 points. Using the cheese, I averaged around 990 points and managed to get lucky to win with 1010 points.
Tangent Time:
Iâve said it before. Motion controls work best when they complement existing controls in an optional way or in more restrained ways. I love it when games have gyro aiming since that can help compensate when aiming with sticks with small fine corrections. It works here because the sticks do most of the work and the gyro sensors work where they are best suited.
Or in many mobile racing games, steering is often done by tilting your phone. I enjoy this because there is only one axis you need to tilt your phone, the screen often rotates in conjunction so your view is preserved and itâs more intuitive to feel the ârangeâ of rotation and how it corresponds to steering.
Hell, even ignoring these approaches, motion can still be used in worthwhile ways. Such as by mapping an extra action that is infrequent if all other buttons are occupied. The Mario games on Wii map a âspinâ when you jump and shake the remotes giving Mario a bit of grace allowing him to make slightly further jumps or correct a bad jump. Call of Duty MW1 on Wii allowed you to assign certain commands to custom motions of the controller and nunchuck. So you could map stuff like jumping, moving and shooting to buttons but map reloading to smacking the nunchuck to the Wii Mote or plunge the Wii Mote forward to do a melee attack or tilting the Wii Mote to bring out a grenade or alt fire.
Even Resistance 1: Fall of Man had a neat idea. You could quickly tilt the controller left to bring up the Scoreboard screen without needing to take your thumbs off the sticks or stop moving. The Soulsbourne games allow you to quickly do emotes without needing a menu by holding the interact button and quickly tilting the controller in certain directions.
I bring all this up to highlight how Sly 4âs use of motion controls are a failure on every level. Theyâre mostly used in place of minigames as the sole method of control. So all the issues of motion controls (such as the lack of broad control and feedback) are front and centre. The only place where the motion controls are understandable is when firing arrows as you can then control the arrow after itâs fired using both the sticks and gyro aiming. But even then, the lack of any ability to tune the gyro sensitivity or even invert the controls hampers any use it could have had.
I donât mind the idea of Sly 4 having decent motion controls. There are places where I can see it being beneficial. In addition to shooting and guiding arrows, I can see it being useful when you have to use the binoculars. Especially as Bentley as you need to shoot darts precisely.
Or, hereâs a gimmicky one: you can bind certain costumes or tools to also be selected by quickly tilting the system. Even though using the D-pad for a quick select would be faster, it would still be a better use of motion controls for Sly 4 than most of whatâs currently there.
End Tangent.
Back to getting all the trophies, the final arcade machine, unlocked only when youâve gotten all the treasures in every other episode, is very easy. It has â3 roomsâ, one featuring every minigame thus far. But the high score requirements are really low and rooms arenât as tough as prior versions. You can easily get the high score in the first area which is the Alter Ego one. Even if you miss it there, the second area is Spark Runner but you can keep reloading the checkpoint to preserve your score. So you can get some time clocks, reload a checkpoint when youâre close to running out of time or about to fall off and repeat until you get the high score.
You do need to get past the Spark Runner section to the 3rd and final section that uses System Cracker's gameplay in order to get a hidden Sly Mask, but it's far easier than the dedicated Spark Runner arcade minigame as the section is shorter, is more generous with Time Pickups, has easier level design and lets you reload a checkpoint if you're about to fail which doesn't end the run.
So yeah, Sly 4 Thieves in Time was....inconsistent game to platinum. I enjoyed the base gameplay, System Cracker, the various challenge trophies and the mini speedruns for collecting treasures. I didn't enjoy finding the collectibles and doing some of the other minigames. I hated Spark Runner.
If the game had more ways of tracking collectibles, fewer minigames and better load times, I'd gladly recommend it as a fun game to platinum.
As for the base game itself, I am mixed on it. The gameplay is arguably the best in the series. Sly's movement and costumes are so fun to play around with. Murray, Bentely and Sly's ancestors are also fun changes of pace during missions.
The story is lacking. My main issue is that it doesn't feel like it realizes its following up Sly 3. The story so casually undoes the ending of Sly 3 to get Sly 4's story going. I get it, that's what a sequel has to do. But the way it does it really undermines Sly 3. It's also much more lighthearted and doesn't have as much of a theme or focal point as its predecessors. Sly 1-3 explored the theme of legacy and the consequences of adhering to it so tightly. A major aspect of Sly 3 was Sly realizing the Cooper Vault wasn't worth dying for. It's what prompts him to fake his amnesia and retire with Carmilita in the end. So for Sly 4 to then have Sly have an itch to steal just for the fun of it, it's sending mixed messages here.
In addition, Sly is really casual about the fact Carmilita now knows about his betrayal and has broken up with him. Seems like that should have been a bigger deal. In fact, that kind of "casual-ness" persists throughout the story. Sly doesn't really have much of an arc or any real heartfelt moments with his ancestors. Nor do they seem to really care their decedent from the future is here with them.
If I could have tweaked the story to address these points, here's what I would have done:
I'd have the story open with Sly, Bentley and Murray enjoying their "retirement" and have no plans of thieving. I'd go so far as to have Sly even scoff at the idea of him ever wanting to be a thief. Then when the pages of the Thievus Racconus are dissapearing, Sly, Bentley and Murray have to reluctantly unretire to try stopping them. There would be dialogue during the opening mission of Sly being worried if they get caught as it would undo their happy ending. And then when Carmilita catches Sly, Sly at first is flustered and tries to explain the situation to Carmilita who isn't having any of Sly's BS. Sly is forcibly extracted by the gang and then they time travel. As they are time travelling. Sly is upset that, in order to go literally defend the Cooper Legacy, he has to give up his happy relationship and can't be repaired now. That even if they fix the problem, they'll be on the run forever now. Murray had to give up his professional career as well.
Already, I feel this introduction has a few things going for it. It respects the ending of Sly 3 and keeps the characters in more character, as well as putting more heat on Le Paradox. Sly 4 had to rip away the happy ending that was Sly 3. The characters know that and aren't happy about it. There is immediate consequences. And that heat can be directed at Le Paradox when he comes later.
I'd also like if all of the ancestors Sly met had different reactions to both him and the Cooper legacy and how it affects Sly's arc.
For example, lets say when he meets Riochi Cooper, Ricohi is initially disappointed in Sly as the future Cooper decendent as Sly doesn't act honourably or respect the legacy or something like this. Something that makes Sly start to question if it's even worth defending the Cooper Legacy. Bentely is the voice of reason here and mediator that gets the gang to work as well as they can.
Then when Sly meets Tennessee Cooper, Sly is initially expecting another traditionalist ancestor that cares a lot about the Cooper Legacy. But Tennessee is kinda the opposite of Riochi in that Tennasee doesn't care about the legacy in the same way. He adds his own spin and contributions but also uses the knowledge from it to do his own thing. Perhaps Tennessee is this Robin-Hood esque figure who uses his heisting skills to steal from the corrupt ruling class and give to the lower class. The point being that through Tennessee, Sly considers another aspect of the Cooper Legacy on how he's not that beholden to it and can potentially make it his own.
Then when Sly meets Bob, part of Bob's training is also from Sly as Sly teaches him some of the Cooper moves he knows. Since Bob is the first Cooper ancestor, he has no bias towards the legacy or any knowledge. So he's far more grateful and begins to use his new skills in helpful ways. Causing Sly to wonder if he could use the Cooper Legacy in more ways.
It's a similar situation for Sir Galleth. And for Selim, perhaps by that point, Sly has a newfound outlook and appreciation for the Cooper Legacy and ways on how he can improve it or make it his own that he encourages Selim not to retire or to retire in such a way where he could help people or something like that.
So yeah, there's this theme now of "Don't let the past define you now. You can make it your own and grow past its flaws". Which I feel would give Sly 4 more of a punch. I am basically copying Metal Gear Solid 4 and Assassin's Creed though.
I also feel it would be better if Penelope wasn't the villain of episode 4. It seems to contradict her character from past games and the explanation given for her heel turn doesn't really hold water. I feel the story would be better if Penelope had the role Dmitri has where she's their help in the present and the Knight was a new character. But if you need to have Penelope as the antagonist, have her be under mind control or something. That way the team has the conflict of how will they stop the plan without hurting their friend. But if you really insist on Penelope being a full on antagonist now by her own choice, perhaps flesh out her motivations more? Maybe something like "she sees how Bentley will never reach his full potential as the Bill Gates of the world because of his criminal past that requires him to lay low and not take public credit for his inventions. So she's trying to erase the Coopers so Bentley will have never met Sly". That would at least be more than "I want money".
Everything else, I feel works more or less.
I will note that the cliffhanger ending was a weird choice given that this game wasn't projected to sell well and kinda pigenholes any story Sly 5 would be going for. Plus, it being locked behind the platinum trophy means only a small portion of the few players that played Sly 4 would even know about it.
So yeah, that's my take on platinumming Sly 4: Thieves in Time. What do y'all think?
Next up for me is platinumming every Spider-Man game on PS VITA. See you then.

2023.05.30 21:15 Shrek_2_Soundtrack France/Italy GF Trip Summary
Hey everyone!
This sub was a great resource for preparing for my big Euro trip, so I wanted to drop this post as a round up for great gluten free places I visited!
PARIS Patisseries: Copains - fully GF bakery, amazing selection here and super friendly staff, everything I had here was delicious (and I tried way too much)
NoGlu - while my least favorite of the bakeries, NoGlu offers lunch as well, so getting a traditional ham and emmental sandwich on their baguette was a great treat. As far as their straight up baked goods though, they were noticeably GF as compared to others in town
Le Pont Traverse - this little coffee shop is operated by NoGlu and serves baked goods from their bakery. It was super close to my hotel, so we started pretty much every day here. The smoked salmon bagel was especially good
Chambelland - while it was a close race with Copains, this was my favorite of the bakeries. I legitimately couldn't tell their eclair was gluten free
Dinners: Brasserie Les Deux Palais - this is probably the only really "tourist trap" place we went, but we were hoping to walk along the Seine around sunset one night, and this brasserie by Sainte Chapelle was just the right location. It's definitely overpriced, but if you're looking for the traditional tourist brasserie experience while gluten free, this is a reliable stop
Le P'Tit Troquet - traditional French cooking, small restaurant with an even smaller menu, but gf adjustments available for most menu items and friendly about making the changes needed
Le Saotico - this little bistro was packed with locals when we arrived, which is always a good sign. The owners are a couple and the wife has Celiac, so she is quick to assure you that you are in good hands. They make some amazing duck and had great GF dessert options
Boutary - shout out
u/MagneticPerry for this recommendation because this was THE BEST MEAL of our whole trip. A caviar-centric tasting menu, tailored around my GF request, with some of the most delightful waitstaff I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. A true 10 out of 10 experience
NICE Taverne Messena - this place was a godsend when we arrived to Nice at 11pm one night. They stay open until 1 am and have a special menu labelled with allergens
Pop-O-Thyme - we ate lunch twice at this little crepe spot, traditional GF buckwheat crepes can be made with almost any of their fillings, and the GF crepes are made in a separate area than the others
La Rotonde - this is the mid-budget option for dining at the historic Le Negresco resort in Nice, with the Prix Fixe menu coming in around 65 euros a person. Your GF options are a little limited on the prix fixe menu, but everything I had was delicious, and they brought out warm GF rolls that were amazing. Dinner here also gets you access to the historic hotel, which is normally reserved for guests, so make sure to check out the incredible bar as well
GiGi Tavola - Someone told us the GF pizza at GiGi Tavola rivaled any GF pizza in Italy, which I was very skeptical of, but after having spent a week in Italy I have to agree. This is the best GF crust I have ever had. Make sure to make a reservation here, and if you're a craft cocktail person, ask about the speakeasy when you pay the check
At this point in my trip, we crossed over into Italy, and here I am happy to confirm everything you've heard about being gluten free in Italy is 100% true. People are super friendly and super knowledgable, almost every restaurant has their allergen info handy, and the AIC (Italian Celiac Association) awards a seal of approval to restaurants that can the facilities and know-how to assure food safety for people with Celiac. GENOA I Tre Merli - we had a stopover night in Genoa and wanted some seafood. I Tre Merli is AIC certified and sits out on the port, so we figured it was a good pick. All the seafood was fresh and delicious, and they offer several gluten free pasta options to accompany any of their sauces. I had some incredible GF seafood gnocchi here
McDonalds - yep, I tried the Italian GF burger. It is exactly what you expect: a frozen double cheeseburger that's been microwaved to order and served to you still sealed in plastic. But it's safe, convenient, and a Scharr bun is gonna be delicious no matter what. It makes me so mad no one in the States can offer something that is this simultaneously convenient and safe.
FLORENCE Hostaria Il Desco - another AIC certified spot, this one offering more upscale pastas. We got truffle bruschetta on GF bread and chinghiale pasta (wild boar, a local delicacy). This place was a healthy mix of locals and tourists, which for Florence is saying a lot, as it was flooded with American college kids the whole time we were there
Sgrano - a very popular lunch spot in Florence serves giant sandwiches prepared inside an entire loaf of focaccia, and Sgrano is directly across the street offering a GF version. These sandwiches are gigantic and filled with incredible Italian meats and cheeses. I highly recommend you split a sandwich, I had one to myself at lunch and couldn't eat for the rest of the day
Cafe Del Teatro Niccolini - this cafe offers several different gluten free croissants, store and prepared separately in the back, and is a convenient grab-and-go espresso and a pastry spot
Grom - no matter where you go in Italy you'll probably find Grom gelato. They started as a dedicated GF gelateria and got big enough to be bought out by Unilever, so they are all over the place now. While many gelaterias in Italy are knowledgable enough to be very safe about scooping your GF order, it's nice to have dedicated GF flavors and cones at places like Grom
ROME Taliani Pastries Cafe - I had read this place wasn't fully GF before going, so I was expecting a limited GF selection, but they actually have much more GF options than non-GF. The pastries were huge and delicious and reasonably priced, the staff even threw in some little tarts for free since they were close to closing.
Pizza in Trevi - at just a few steps away from the Trevi fountain, this place is filled with tourists, but it's AIC certified and has a unique buckwheat GF pizza crust that gives it a great flavor. Despite the crowds rushing in and out, they give gluten free diners a separate placemat and bring all the gf food out on separate dishes to insure safety
Mercato Hostaria - after sitting down here and opening the menu I realized this must be the more upscale sister restaurant to Pizza in Trevi, although the surroundings here are completely different. Instead of the cramped crowds of Trevi, this restaurants sits out on a quiet piazza, but they follow the same AIC safety protocols. All their pasta sauces can be served on fresh in-house GF pasta, and everything we had here was delicious
Mama Eat Lab - there are several Mama Eat locations around Rome offering GF comfort foods (think a lot of breaded and deep-fried options), but Mama Eat Lab in Vatican City is a smaller, dedicated GF location. The pizza here was probably the least impressive of my trip, but the pasta is delicious, and they make these like breaded, deep-fried mashed potato logs that are incredible
I hope some of this was helpful for any of you planning travel, and for anyone out there with travel-anxiety due to our dietary needs, I just want to assure you that France and especially Italy are excellent places to be! I felt more safe there than many of the places I travel in the US.

"I said to call them now, yeah! Fennel's really hur- I said stop her! WAIT!" "Hey, we've got our own here to look after, screw this shit, this job is fuckin' hexed, man!" "Back to the van, anyone who can make it!" "Get downstairs, fast!" One of the few leaders among the mob soldiers and scum present had tried to maintain order, but their boss had not stopped trying to get free and reach Kari's body. She'd almost made it, but they caught up and managed to hold her back. "BOSS! Boss, Fez is almost here, we can still tie her up and get outta here, just wait a little while!" Her snarling growl rose to higher pitch as she tried to tug free, spittle flicking from her muzzle in a mad rage, clutching at the socket she used to see out of. The stinging, horrible stinging had lit her entire skull up with a fury-painted hunger to reach Kari's prone body. "GET THE FUCK OUT OF MY WAY! If she's still alive... haaa, god... if she's alive somehow, we pig stick her until she's coughin' up chunks of her FUCKIN' heart, then we saw off the head... aaah, and get the fuck out of here! FUCK the reward, she... aaagh god.. let me go, I can DO THIS! S-sstop..." The remaining men tried to calm her down and help somehow, blood running freely from the heavy scratches and gouges inflicted. Kari's still body seemed to still be breathing a little and Fennel pulled her buck knife out, still breathless with anger as she stepped close on shaky legs. "Pity... guess I gotta unzip you a bit, wake you up so you can watch this... just take ONE of your eyes real slow and make sure you stay awake, THEN we... then we put out the other one, slice off your limbs and just... haaa.. just let the steets chew on your for a while." A clatter drew their attentions away from the prone woman, a corner of the unfinished lobby looking darker than it should. "Whoever's there, fuck off or die- in fact, no, just shoot this fucker." Said the leader goon, and the others pulled their pistols and fired into the corner until they needed reloading. In this moment, they caught sight of a pair of white eyes look out at them from the inky shadows, and then, a deep rattling voice with a single word as a being of pure midnight stepped closer, holding its arms up. "Burn." All at one, flames of alabaster like blank shapes in reality leapt up all over the place, shocking the assembled criminals and raising the heat to oven intensity. "Oh no! NO!" and more shots were taken, to no avail as they trailed off widely, the entity speaking in a terrible volume. "BEHOLD, ITHOTU, RUIN OF ALEXANDRIA, SON OF THE SCOURGE OF EDEN. ALL WILL BE CONSUMED AND GODS WORK SHALL BE ASHES!" it roared and released a blood-shattering howl, floating forward as the colorless flames leapt up higher. "RUN! grab the boss and run, hurry!" "NO! I have to kill her not... she.." Fennel's remaining vision swam suddenly and she tipped forward, almost falling facedown into the white blaze wreathing the unconscious assassin. From nowhere, Fez had appeared and had caught her body to hold her back, pointing to their rear to indicate an escape route. He managed to pick her up and fireman-carry her bloody body out, all while she tried to wake up, climb off the man she loved, and leap knife-first onto the snow leopard so that shadowed demon could drag them both down to Hell. They were out into the two escape trucks and the wolf's car, all which promptly took off towards the north to find the safehouse. The black being wreathed in flames stepped closer, peeking out of the window hole for a moment before turning and absorbing all the fire into its body with a long exhale of effort and collapse of its own onto hand and knees. Shape and coloration returned to its form; hooded jacket and denim pants with weathered shoes. "Good grief, that was close...", it said as it pulled the hood it wore back to reveal the mask-like pattern and bright yellow eyes of Tom Blackberry. Before anything else, he hurried over to Kari's body and looked over it with his mage sight, his grimace looking worse as he marked trouble spots. "What the hell are you made of, Tracy?" he thought aloud, checking problem areas thoroughly before even thinking of moving her. It was when he saw below her rib cage that he saw it, the seperation and wicked angle it held. "Oh no... oh shit.. Uhh... I gotta get you out of here and fast." he muttered and crouched low to get his arms under her. She wasn't heavy, but it was still a body and Tom grunted with effort before getting her up into his arms without too much jostling, marching out to a featureless parking area with nothing but trees and the fencing surrounding that. The raccoon knew that the police or worse would be here any minute, any second. Tom carefully laid her back down and climbed inside his mind to enact a strong and complex magic. "Dammit, only one thing for it... sorry, Tracy, you can kill me later for this." he said as he suffused magic to his fingertip, a sparkling blue energy gathering there, cupping her head with the other. He exhaled and closed his eyes, concentrating on the visual in his head, the memory of spotting her earlier, where she'd possibly looked and, most importantly, came from. Dream-fasting was not a dangerous magic, but required focus, and Tom often lacked this when times were dire. He inhaled sharply and touched her temple, closing his eyes to see more than anyone could.
A tidal wave of memories seized his body all at once and tumbled him violently thru a riptide of dizzying emotions. There were houses, stairwells, people, adults, groups of other children, physical trauma, firework emotions exploding wild across Tom's mind as it struggled to reach the surface. He felt elation, thrills, bitter regrets, passionate excitement from many kinds of first times, sadness at many things, outward and inwards. The positivity brought his own mind clarity enough to further his dive to memories more recent, but he found himself off the weightless crash of water and was now standing in a warehouse, looking around and smelling. A distant lit panel seemed to hold something he was thinking about needing, and he moved to hurry, only to encounter a slick surface and fall onto his back. He got up fast, blinking on his mage sight, only to gasp and take in the whole room. Blood, dead people, knives, guns, bullets and casings, all of them heaped into a humanoid shape sitting with in an easy repose, the head veiled in shadows or stains, impossible to tell. Tom ran for it as fast as he could, looking ahead now to see an old house his mind refused to recognize no matter how he tried. They were in there, he had to save them, he knew it. The massive corpse golem began reaching for him, emitting a low hollow scream that was growing louder. Tom was much shorter now, but he reached the Door, stumbling into the hallway that led to his main garden. A giant hand tore thru the unseen ceiling and groped madly for him. He cried out and crawled out of the way, running towards his own room as the howling sound grew so loud, it began to hurt.. the door wouldn't open! He slammed into it again and again, still in the form of a little raccoon boy, tears filling his eyes as the hand barreled towards him, and then CLICK! it opened, and he dove inside to land face first onto cold earth and grass, amidst tall trees now. He turned and saw the hand of the slain and the half-built apartment complex, and two people in the distance, one looking right at him--
Tom's eyes slowly stopped shining sky-blue and slowly eased back to yellow. He had fallen asleep sitting up, and felt the dried tears at his cheeks. He turned to look at the unconscious snow leopard. "Sky and stars... just who are you, Kari?" he said, the memories fresh as yesterday in his mind. It would wear off within a day, but he had bigger things to worry about. A quick frisking of her person found the car keys and, even better, her phone. The raccoon hesitated for a moment before turning it on and sighed in relief. No lock, plenty of power, and a 5G connection of all things. He pocketed these things, and lifted Kari up now, his mind and senses still shaking off the somatic connection of the magic. He closed one eye and concentrated on two things: his own appearance, and the direction he'd seen, only backwards. The car was quickly located and the feline woman was carefully laid across the seats. After some tight securing over her body with the seatbelts, he climbed in, adjusted the seat, and started the Harper up, trying to calmly set things up with the phone. He cleared his throat and licked at dry lips before hitting the Tekster icon. "Ok, Tekster, go home." No response, so Tom waited and tried again. "Tekster, home." he said emphatically. Still no reaction, and the panic was prickling at the back of his throat now. "Tekster, navigate home! Tekster, respond." Silence, the kind that crushes the will to live, but he calmed down and looked closer. It was the right icon, the mic was showing a wavelength. "Tekster." The wavelength wiggled mutely and Tom furrowed his brow. "Hold on, I didn't... oh WAIT a second!" he barked, going to the small top menu. It was set on silent, and he changed it to full volume while setting his own impatient growl even higher. "You are certifiable, you know that?" the raccoon shouted at the knocked-out assassin in the back seat, "You're CERTIFIABLE! TEKSTER, TAKE ME HOME, FOR FUCKS SAKE." [Okay, finding directions for.. Nome.. Alaska, Twin Lakes. Would you like me to--] The angered yelling and hollering was muted by the windows, but still fairly audible to the indifferent would outside of car as it pulled off down the access road and towards the marked destination. It was almost an hour later that he'd managed the six mile trip into the forest and up the special path, somehow managing to find her house, park the car, and begin to carefully extract her. Her breath wasn't coming as fast now, and Tom laid a palm gently to her chest. The pulse was faint, far apart, and lessening. Fear chased adrenaline thru his body, and the limp woman now seemed nearly weightless in his grasp "We gotta get you upstairs, get these wounds looked at!" he said aloud, not caring if she woke now, "Stay with me, Kari, you're almost home safe!" And, with one firm push against the opened door, they were inside and he was heading upstairs one foot at a time, nearly cratering the floor with each heavy efforted step.
Time seemed to creep by in her mind, an anaesthetic tiptoe of seconds into minutes into hours, and incremental moments beyond. She had been dreaming off and on about things; flying, swimming, feeling like she was stoned, or when the time she got lost when the house was being negotiated on... fleeting visuals of her parents. It was a strange world she was occupying, pieces of everything she'd known, all while her body felt stiff and itchy as she moved. It was sometime around remembering her school that she became aware of the effervescent sound of an electric guitar playing somewhere. She went peeked into Gulliman's classroom, only to find it wasn't there anymore, replaced instead by long, comforting fields of tall grass, its color that relaxing darker shade of green. She walked out into it, feeling as though strands of her were being snagged on the vegetation and drifting out of her, pleasantly pulling away who she was to replace it with the snow leopard as she currently felt. Her clothes and pelt peeled away, leaving a skinless nightmare of a living visual of the bodily systems to come up next to the source of the shapeless music. Tom turned at looked her up and down, grinning a little as he kept playing "Hm, nice gastrocnemiusi, good tone." he said. "Well, of course they are, I don't do lunges for nothing." she replied, looking at her own hands for a bit, and the curious motion of the muscles and bones and ligaments. Each pulse of her heart was tangible all over her body. "Am I dead?" Kari asked after a moment. Tom shook his head, switching to block chords. "No, you are asleep, but when you wake up, it'll all come back to you." Kari sat down, looking over the grass peacefully for a minute or so, but she suddenly got back and started looking around. "Wait a minute, I got knocked out! I fell-- the fight! I have to wake up." "And you will, right after you promise me something." She silently looked him over for a moment. "Promise what? I have to go, they're... I THINK THEY'RE IN MY HOUSE!" she shouted, checking her body for a weapon. "Oh shit, I-- KARI JUST PROMISE YOU WO-Ohhhh!" She had already vanished, and the dream began to fade all at once. Tom rubbed his face with a tired sigh, feeling himself melting back into reality beyond. "She's gonna be mad." he said plainly, leaving the place behind for now.
Her eyes snapped open and she felt like three people were sitting on her. Sight rapidly adjusted to the semi-darkness of the room, only lit from the banker's lamp on her desk, and she looked around to only see the raccoon, waving placidly at her and sitting in her chair. "What's happening? How did I get here, why can I barely move, was it a stun gun or something? I hit the ground and blacked out, what happened to- mnnhh?!" Tom had pressed a finger to her lips with a soft shushing sound in an attempt to ease her nerves, but she locked eyes on his and let out a guttural growl. "I will bite it OFF." "Okay! Right, sorry, that was to calm you down, just a bit to recollect, is it working?" "Nooo!" she fired back incredulously, still trying to move. Kari paused suddenly and checked under her sheet to notice only the barest details her body could offer, and her temper redlined again. "OHHH, you are DEAD MEAT, asshole! C'mere, get... I swear, you'll- nggh!" the assassin tried again and again to move more than her hands and head, but it was like her limbs and torso weighed a ton each; she could barely flex her fingers to make a fist, though she dearly wished to use one and then some. "Look, you, I'm gonna work up the strength to get back up and vivisectify you, so before that happens, you'd better start explaining, it will make an exquisite epitaph, I'm sure." The bloodlust coming off her was nearly suffocating and Tom cleared his throat a bit to bide time on where to start. Finally, he exhaled and tried to sum up. "Without getting too into it, I can use magic." he said in plain tones. Kari sneered, laying her head back down. "Great, I've been immobilized by a hippie." "No no, I mean it, here-", and Tom snapped his fingers to produce a single ball of flame as big as a cherry and in the flickering shape of a teardrop. Kari's eyes widened, then began to scan his arm. "Alright, I seen this bit before, where's the fuel line and the mechanism." "Kari, it's the real deal, I could make one much bigger, but this room of yours is... well, it's a mess!" He wasn't wrong. She strained again and again, trying to sit up, but Tom talked her down. "Easy there, you're gonna have to stay in bed for another nite or so." "Anoth-- what? When was that battle, how long has it been." "About a day and a half. I've been healing your body after it was rather grievously brutalized in that fight." Her head started to swim at all the details and updates, but one fact poked out in her mind. "...how did you learn my real name." she demanded, rather than asked. Tom held up his left hand, the aura of dark blue magic covering it in backlit neon indigo. "Do you remember when you passed out from the impact?" "I'm starting to, yeah. I went down rough and must've rang my bell pretty hard to get taken out of the fight." Tom got up to move around the room. "Well, in addition to probing gently into your memories to find your keys and home, I was awash in many other memories, and that was the name people called you." The more she heard, the less it made sense. She tried to give the right questions a press, experiencing her own brain whirlwind. "We'll leave the trust issue for later, when I can make sure of it physically, but why not just shake me awake, it's not hard." Tom closed his eyes, opening them again to reveal the yellow shafts of light from his mage-sight, getting an honest gasp of surprise from her. "Sorry, I'll just-" Blink. "-turn those off. I have special sight that allows me to see many things, including thru flesh." "But not clothes?" she asked, her ear flicking angrily. "... well, I can, okay? I'd never think of abusing that side of the power." "Heaven forbid." she grunted, losing a bit of the anger, but still irritated and deeply confused, "So, why the eyes?" "You looked like someone ran you over with a bus and there was this big tear in your clothes anyways, I saw the body armor." Her mind went back to the question. "And this has to do with you not wanting to jostle me to wake me up HOW?" she asked in mild sarcasm. "I was getting to that," he replied, lacing his fingers and leaning elbows on his knees with another exhale, "See... in order to apply my healing magic, I've had to learn baseline understanding of some bodily systems- cardiovascular, muscle, skeletal, basic shit." Kari was watching him with more attention now, still unbelieving about magic really existing. "Go on." she said, since he was seeming hesitant. "Well, 4th lumbar had pretty much nearly separated in the impact, along with hairline fracturing along the 6th and 7th. Kari, you couldn't move or feel anything I'd have done to wake you up because *you couldn't move or feel anything,* at least below your neck." The air went very still for the moment, the snow leopard staring at the fan above slowly rotating. Part of her training had involved electroshock doses to make the most of a partially paralyzed situation, but that sensation was different from when she'd fallen. She'd felt encased, latent motion in her muscles instantly become zero, a wide-awake bodily slumber. It sank in slowly at first, then pushed in hard all the way. She had been paralyzed, from the neck down, almost a brain in a jar. She would've been taken by those gangers by now, buried under horrible experiences before facing execution by the Bear himself. She felt a touch of hyperventilation coming on, but managed to calm her pulse and breathing. "So, that is what you are trying to fix in me, with your healing magic?" she asked finally. Tom nodded, looking up from staring at the floor for a while. "I mean, it's practically all done, and it was careful, gradual, continous work, almost six hours of it total, with two and half being near-continuous." He didn't mean to yawn here, but he did. "Luckily, your skull was fine, just had a contusion from where you thwacked it. See, neuro damage is wh-" "I'm sorry to cut you off, but you said your name was Hugo when we first met, that can't have been your real name." Tom's ears wiggled a little in confusion, then shrugged with a smile. "Well, I could say the same for you, Tracy. No, my name's Tom, Tom Blackberry, but my middle name IS Hugo." "Tom, there's a wastepaper basket by my desk," she began, scooching up into a sitting position slowly, miraculously to the biomancers eyes, "Take the bag out of it, put in the one below it, and bring it here quickly.. I'm going to be sick." He darted over to follow these instructions fast, and was back in record time with the lined bucket. "Here, think you can hold this yourself?" he inquired encouragingly. Kari knit her brow for a moment and began to lift her arms, both feeling like they were weighed down with 50 lbs. of unmixed concrete. They slowly raised, zombie-like, and accepted the container just in time as her breathing hitched and she vomited raggedly into it, pausing a moment before heaving again and laying back limply, handing it back to him slowly. "Okay... okay, I think that's got it, I don't feel sick anymore." She went on to ask for a water bottle on her desk to gargle and rinse her mouth out before deflating completely. "That's all I've got, sorry." "Hey, no no, you've made remarkable time in recuperating. I can keep healing you a little more tonite, once I get this removed." and he carefully held up the basket. "Downstairs, kitchen, under the counter by the fridge," the snow leopard instructed, "And bring up a can of Purple Burpler with you, my stomach is doing flip-flops." "Sure thing, be right back." These instructions were followed too, and he brought two sodas instead, backing into the room. "Here, hope you don't mind-- ooh." Kari was completely passed out, snoring lightly with her head turned at an odd angle. The raccoon grinned a little and went to get her situated, then took a seat in the office chair to keep a vigil on her, just in case. It was almost 4 by the time he finally fell asleep, and when this happened, Kari's eye flashed open and she nimbly, silently got out of the bed and tiptoed carefully to a second backpack she had hidden. "I hope he isn't mad about this." she wished quietly, pulling a roll of Kong Tape and glancing at him over her shoulder, "But if he's seen my memories, then he knows I can't take chances."

2023.05.30 09:39 Johnny_Mc2 If you enjoyed The Menu and want more, read the script for it. Itâs free and adds more insanity to the point itâs over the top (in a good way)
Hereâs a free legal link.
This movie is perfect to read the script for since the final movie has a lot of ambiguity, and we get more courses out of the script, along with other little changes. My favorite change is that the movie star in the script has a severe peanut allergy, and his assistant at one point has to force feed him nuts. Then his own special course comes out and fuck me:
HARD CUT back to the real dining room. Not quiet. People screaming. Felicity is being forced to feed the movie star nuts, which he is allergic to. Itâs clear he is having a massive allergic reaction.
A SUPERIMPOSED TITLE READS: âEIGHTH COURSE: âGONE NUTSâ - peanut dashi, peanut foam, peanut curd, peanut brittle, and raw peanuts hand-fedâ
and then right after thereâs this line:
We see as well that Lillian is being waterboarded in a giant pail of the emulsion.
Seriously even if youâve never read a script before, this one is written extremely well in a way you can perfectly picture everything. The rule of scripts is typically 1 page = 1 minute of screen time. You should be able to blow through this in an hour or two

2023.05.30 02:40 brunettelindsaylohan Is this a healthy and well balanced diet for someone who has a variety of issues surrounding food?
Hey everyone! I(22F) have currently started a diet that I found helps with the various issues I have that surround food. I find that a lot of junk food, fast food and gluten bother my stomach a lot. In addition, I have food texture issues with a variety of meats and I have food allergies to certain kinds of fish, thus that means that I can only really eat seafood.
For the diet, I eat vegetables, fruit, peanut butter, eggs, gluten free crackers, hummus, cheese, nuts, tofu/plant based meat alternatives, pickles and rice on a daily basis. I also occasionally eat sushi (spicy California rolls), seafood, gluten free cheese pizza, and ice cream. I only drink water and occasionally smoothies.
Is this a healthy, well-balanced diet for someone who has a variety of issues surrounding food?

2023.05.29 19:41 RaynaClay The Last Resort: A Small Leak
Hello all. I have written here before about my job at Ultima Resort (

2,
3,
4,
5,
6,
7), though I know it has been a while, sorry about that. We were trapped for some time, my phone died pretty quickly, and I wasnât able to recharge it again until the water receded. So, I havenât really been able to write. But I am getting ahead of myself. Let me get you up to date, then it will all make more sense.
I opened a door and peered into the closet, but the noise was quieter here, if anything. I shut the closet and continued down the hallway. The dripping had started out intermittent. The gentle plip, plip, plip was barely audible over the normal sounds of the hotel, and we had assumed it was related to the steady rain that had been drumming on the building for a few days, at that point. But the frequency of the dripping had been increasing steadily, and now was concerningly loud and constant. It was somehow audible from every corner of the hotel, and it was only a matter of time until the guests complained. They were already irritable because of the bad weather, which had kept them stuck indoors. As I passed a window, a flash of lightning lit the forest behind the hotel. The lights flickered ominously but it stayed on. The clap of thunder rattled the doors in their frames. I spotted Vincent hurrying towards me from down the hall. His face seemed pale.
âWell, did you find the leak?â I asked.
âUmm⌠you could say that,â he replied, uncomfortably, eyes shifting to the storm outside.
âWhatâs wrong?â
âIt⌠well, you should just come see.â
I followed him down the hall to the ballroom where we had hosted the anniversary party some days back. It had been a nice event. Less deaths than I had expected. The hors dâoeuvres were pretty good. There was still a bit of smoke damage on the west wall, but we had cleaned it off as best as we could and the place looked presentable again, though I was now thinking we should put on a new coat of paint. It was hard to decide, when I wasnât sure if the room would even be here next week. Vincent opened the door on the back wall and gestured me inside. This was new.
It was some sort of small storage cupboard, with dim lighting and a low ceiling. It was full of what looked like furniture, draped in white cloths for storage. I wondered what the furniture was made of, because the room had a strange fetid odor, that reminded me of rot and death. I covered my nose with my hand instinctively, but it did little to help. The small window in the back showed that the rain continued to fall outside, but it didnât seem to be the source of the leak, as the floor around it was dry. Still, the leak must be in here, because the sound was louder than ever. I took a step forward, to get a better look at the room, but Vincent grabbed my arm and pulled me back, pointing towards the ceiling. I looked up to see a large dome light. It had a strange dark tint, and hardly any light made it through. But something else was coming from the dome. Drips fell in a steady rhythm, and as my eyes tracked them, I saw them splash into a widening puddle on the ground. The puddle was viscous and black, glimmering in the dim light. I looked back at Vincent.
âWhat is that?â I raised an eyebrow. âIt doesnât really look like ordinary water to me.â
âI donât know. Maybe⌠it is picking something up as it drips through from the roof?â he did not sound particularly convincing.
âMaybe,â I tried to play along. âThough, I am not sure I want to know what that could be. Did you check if it is coming from somewhere upstairs?â
âYeah. Nothing out of the ordinary on the floor above, and I canât find any signs of a leak anywhere else.â
âAlright,â I backed out of the door and closed it behind us. âWell, I am sure whatever that is will work itself out.â
âWhat? Weâre just going to leave it? Why did we even bother looking, then?â Vincent protested.
âI was worried it was a roof leak, something we needed to handle with routine maintenance. That does not seem to be the case,â I raised a questioning eyebrow. âDo you know how to fix whatever is going on in there?â
âNoâŚâ
âMe neither. In this place, when the ceiling is dripping black ichor, it is probably for a reason. I assume weâll find out when one of our guests gets involved.â
Vincent opened his mouth, as if to protest, but even as he did, the sound of the phone at the desk echoed through the hotel. Vincent sighed,
âAlright, letâs go see what fresh hell awaits us today.â
I heard a small chuckle inside my head. I resisted the urge to ask Al what he knew. He answers were rarely helpful. He didnât seem to lie, but he was often intentionally misleading, saying whatever he thought would elicit the most drama. I was tired of giving him the satisfaction. I was sure I could sense his disappointment when I refused to engage, but maybe that was just wishful thinking on my part. I couldnât blame Vincent for being apprehensive about what the guestsâ inquiry might be. The three men had arrived to participate in some sort of golf event, but they been here for 3 days now and since it had poured every moment, the event was not taking place. The guests were very unhappy about this turn of events, and they had mostly been killing time by taking it out on us. That wasnât exactly a surprise. The rich ones were always the most demanding, unused to being told ânoâ even when the question was âhas the rain stopped yet?â, and based on the Bugatti they had arrived in, these men were quite rich. I answered the phone on the desk, already suppressing a sigh.
âUltima Resort, front desk, how can I help you?â
âYou can come and open the bar,â the voice on the other end snapped. âItâs past noon and the sign says it should be available by now.â
âI apologize, sir. Iâll be right there.â
âYou had better be. The service at this place is frankly astounding. Honestly, I donât understand why anyone ever stays here. I have half a mind to leave a review warning people away.â
âIâm sorry, sir. I know your stay hasnât been ideal, but please bear with us and we will do everything we can to make it right.â
âYou can start by hanging up the phone and getting me my drink.â
The line went dead in my hand. I sighed and replaced the phone on the cradle.
âLet me guess, they wanted to give us a large tip and leave early?â
âDonât quit your day job,â I chuckled. âYou wouldnât make it as a psychic. Come on, letâs go open the bar, before we have a mutiny on our hands.â
I grabbed the key to open the shutters from the desk and we headed into the dining room. Our three guests were standing around the locked bar, making a show of checking their watches. I struggled to keep my eyes from rolling. It was 12:03pm.
âYou know,â Jack turned to the man next to him, but spoke loudly enough to be sure I could hear. âThis reminds me of some of the dumps we stayed in before we made our fortune, you know? The little rat trap motels in the port towns we had to stay in.â
âThe customer service certainly leaves something to be desired, for a 5-star resort,â his companion, Stewart, sniffed. âFor the amount we are paying, I would expect better.â
I turned the lock, opening the bar. I let them vent; I didnât particularly care if they left us a bad review, and I certainly couldnât do anything with a good tip, so they were free to hate it here if they wanted. It mattered less to me than they could possibly imagine.
âCan you both hear that leak from your rooms?â the final man, Lesley, asked.
âCan we? I swear it is audible from everywhere in the hotel. There must be a dozen leaks in this old roof,â Jack laughed.
âIt would explain that,â Stewart gestured to wet stain on the carpet across the room, oozing out from under a door I didnât remember being there yesterday.
I glanced over to Vincent, he shrugged,
âI guess weâve got a new connection to the ballroom. Thatâs kind of handy,â he said quietly to me, stepping behind the bar and reaching for the rum to pour; it was all they ever ordered.
âThatâs another thing that reminds me of the old days,â Jack elbowed Lesley. âYou would think a landlocked hotel would be drier than a yacht, but here we are. Maybe you should get out a mop, see if you remember how, Les.â
Lesley stiffened,
âI donât do menial labor anymore, Cap.â
âOf course, of course,â Jack clapped Les on the shoulder. âJust a joke, mate. The usual, my good man,â he smiled at Vincent, who began pouring drinks.
As day transitioned into evening, I left the dining room in search of absorbent material, to put down on the leak that was spreading persistently into the dining room. I found some cat litter in a back closet, and it seemed like it would do, for now, so I returned and began spreading it over the growing stain. Jack at the bar looked up blearily, watching my work, before finally declaring,
âOh, so itâs shit, then. That would at least explain the smell.â
âI think it smells more like a rotting carcass,â Stewart interjected.
He had a point there. Maybe I should get some baking soda from the kitchen.
âYou know what?â Jack concluded. âLetâs get this next bottle to go. Weâll take it to our rooms for the night. I canât stand the smell down here another minute.â
He grabbed the bottle from the bar, then he rose and led his friends out of the dining room. I couldnât say I was sorry to see them go. Vincent circled out from around the bar and approached the soggy patch on the floor.
âSo, is that the storage room?â
Now that we were alone, I risked turning the knob and I opened the door to see the same storage room we had entered earlier, though now the light fixture was pouring dark liquid onto the floor, the drip having turned into a deluge. I slammed the door again.
âMaybe we should get Manny,â I concluded.
Manny stood back, watching the ichor pour down like a waterfall. It was pooling around our shoes now, even standing outside the doorframe. He stroked his chin,
âHow long has it been like this?â
âI donât know,â I frowned. âItâs certainly sped up since we found it several hours ago. Any idea how we stop it?â
Manny closed his eyes for a moment, then frowned.
âI think, perhaps, that we should move the food and water from the kitchen, so they donât get spoiled.â
âMove them where?â Vincent asked.
âTo the top floor storage closet. Itâll be safest there. Come help me gather things up.â
âWhat, exactly, do you think is going to happen?â I raised an eyebrow.
âLetâs just get to work, we probably donât have much time.â
Manny turned and strode into the kitchen. Vincent hung back and tapped my shoulder,
âWhat does he know that we donât?â
âI have no idea, honestly,â I shrugged, and Vincent headed off towards the kitchen. âDo you know?â
I kept my voice low, so the others didnât hear.
Oh, are you speaking to me now? Al sniffed.
âDepends, are you going to say anything useful?â
Perhaps for aâŚ
âIf you say âfor a priceâ we can go back to not talking. I am not trading anything for this.â
I think you will find I am much more helpful if you are willing to make a trade.
âI categorically disagree with that statement.â
Fine, I could feel him scowling. I can give you a hint for free. Maybe try asking yourself what heâs hiding from you?
âYour free hint is that he is keeping secrets?â I raised an eyebrow. âIsnât that true of all of us? That isnât exactly helpful.â
Well then, perhaps you would like to make a trade?
âWhy do I even bother?â I sighed and headed into the kitchen to join the others.
Vincent was helping Manny load food onto a rolling cart. The Chef was, fortunately, nowhere in sight.
âGrab another cart and start loading the soft drinks and bottled water onto it. We donât have much time before we need to be in our rooms,â Manny instructed.
I heaved a case of bottled water onto the cart, and we all got to work. By the time we made the final trip the carpet in the hall squished under my feet, oozing dark, foul-smelling liquid. It was coming in fast, now. Manny was probably right; we wouldnât want the food supplies getting contaminated with⌠whatever this was. After he finished stacking the last bag of rice in the closet, Manny closed the door and turned the key in the lock.
âWell, we should find our rooms. It is getting late, and I doubt they will be in their usual place.â
As he turned to walk away, I noticed blood dripping down from his fingers onto the carpet.
âManny, wait, your arm,â I pulled up his sleeve to reveal a thin, but deep cut running up his forearm. âWhat happened? Are you alright?â
Manny yanked his arm away,
âItâs nothing. I must have scraped it moving a box.â
It didnât look like a scrape. It looked clean, with sharp edges, like a knife wound. But before I could say anything more, he was gone, disappearing down one of the halls.
âYou ever wonder about him?â Vincent asked.
âWonder what?â
âWhat his deal is. Come on, donât play dumb. Youâve noticed how strange he can be. How he seems to know things about this place he shouldnât. Surely, youâve considered that he might be⌠one of them.â
âOne of them?â
âYou know, one of the things that run this place, like the Chef. A demon.â
âManny? No, thatâs ridiculous.â
âWhy? He was here before you, maybe he was always here.â
âHe is nothing like the Chef or the Masseur. Itâs obvious that he is a person.â
âIs it? Maybe thatâs just another trick. Maybe he is here to torment us, to steer us wrong.â
I shook my head,
âNo, heâs helped us, helped me, many times. Itâs impossible.â
âAlright,â Vincent shrugged. âBut I have a bad feeling about this one, Lucy. Something about that⌠water. It isnât right.â
âYou always have a bad feeling. Come on, itâs time to get to sleep.â
âRight. See you tomorrow.â
However he knew, Manny was right. I found my room on the 2nd floor, in a back hallway. Since it wasnât in its usual place, it took longer to find, but I did manage it before the deadline and locked myself in. Somehow, I could still hear the sound of flowing water, though. I could hear it everywhere in the hotel, in fact. In a way, it was soothing, people liked the sound of flowing water, right? So, keeping that in mind, I allowed it to lull me to sleep.
The morning arrived without fanfare, or a discernable difference in the light coming in through the windows. The storm continued to rage outside, and the clouds were so thick and dark that it was impossible to tell that dawn had broken. Still, my watch told me that day had arrived and so I left the room prepared to mop up whatever water had pooled downstairs and try to serve breakfast. No food had appeared in my room last night, so breakfast sounded very appealing. At least I could sneak a muffin or something. As I arrived at the stairs, I saw Manny standing on the landing, gazing down at the lobby.
âIs the mess bad?â I asked.
âYou could say that,â Manny didnât turn as I approached.
I reached the railing and gasped. The lobby was gone. The whole first floor was gone. All I could see was dark water, lapping against the stairs.
âHow is that possible?â
âThatâs not really a relevant question, in this place,â Manny noted. âLetâs just call it a flash flood.â
I jogged over to look out one of the windows, lightning flashed, illuminating an alien view, the lawn and garden were also gone. The only thing in sight was a sea of dark water, with the occasional tree protruding from the surface.
âWhat do we do now?â I asked.
âWhat we always do. Vincent has headed upstairs to lay out some food. We can help him, then lock up the rest and go clean rooms.â
âAnd if the water keeps rising?â
âWe keep moving up the floors, I suppose.â
I stepped down the stairs until I was next to the water, and reached out a hand to touch the surface, wanting to test its temperature and texture.
Stop!
I froze in place, hand hovering above the liquid, the command so urgent I couldnât ignore it. Trying to act casually, I rose and headed back up the stairs,
âAlright, Iâll go help with breakfast. Maybe we should put up a sign directing the guests to the 5th floor?â
âIâll handle that. We will have to ration the food carefully; we donât know how long we will need to make it last. Whatever you do, donât show the guests where the food is locked up, and only bring out enough for us to have a small meal.â
âRight,â I nodded. âSee you up there.â
I turned and headed up the stairs. I waited until I was out of earshot to ask,
âOk, what was that about?â
Do not touch the water.
âYes, I gathered that. Why?â
Because you belong to me. And I need you alive.
âWhat is the deal with that water, exactly?â
But only silence answered. He was done volunteering things for the moment, apparently. I sighed and continued up the stairs. Vincent was waiting for me on the fifth floor, hovering by the landing, looking down over the dark, gleaming surface of the new lake below.
âHave you ever seen anything like this before?â he asked as I reached the top of the stairs.
âNope, this is a new one.â
âI wonder if this is what being on the Titanic felt like?â he mused. âWater rising, nowhere to go, just waiting for the end.â
âWe arenât on a ship, though.â
âNo. Does that make it better, or worse?â
I shrugged and Vincent passed me a bagel,
âI figure we should eat the breads first; theyâll go moldy in this humidity. We can save the rice, potatoes, and canned goods for later.â
âMakes sense. Do we have a way to cook any of those things?â
âI looked around. Some of the rooms have fireplaces, I guess we can hang a pot over the fire, cook that way. But maybe all this will stop before we get to that point.â
âMaybe,â I wasnât exactly feeling optimistic about it.
I helped Vincent lay out some fruit and soft breads on the hall table, so that when the guests awoke, they would have something to eat.
âWhat exactly are we going to tell them when they get here?â Vincent asked, putting out some bowls. âWe canât exactly say that the hotel is sinking and itâs all perfectly normal, can we?â
âWhat else is there to say?â I shrugged. âItâs some sort of flood. We donât know any more than they do. Itâs the truth, right?â
He considered that for a moment, then nodded.
âI suppose it is.â
A sudden commotion from downstairs drew us to the railing. The three guests were standing on the 2nd floor landing, looking down at the water, Manny was saying something I couldnât quite hear, but the response was clear enough,
âWhat do you mean, underwater!â Steward shouted. âThis hotel is on dry land. We specifically avoided anything near the ocean or any major body of water. Where did all this even come from?â
âWe are located on a flood plain. It is possible that the dam broke upstream,â Manny explained calmly.
Dam, huh? That wasnât a bad explanation.
âIf that is true, where are the authorities, shouldnât someone be here to evacuate us?â
âI am sure they will be here when they can. Until then, we just need to stay calm and safe. There is breakfast laid out on the 5th floor, please stay away from the water and we will relocate your rooms to the upper floors.â
The trio of men grumbled, but eventually they headed up the stairs. Vincent and I ducked back to our places. As they grabbed fruit from the table, Lesley scowled,
âI told you we should have left days ago. We could have moved to another hotel. Now weâre trapped here, in this dump.â
âOh, relax, Les,â Jack chuckled. âWeâve been in worse scrapes before. This isnât a big deal.â
âAnd if the water keeps rising?â
âI bet we could manage to make a passable raft, eh Stewart?â
Both men chuckled, sharing a private joke, but Lesley still looked anxious.
âI didnât ever want to be out on the water again. We agreed.â
âSeriously, Les, just keep it together, alright? Letâs just eat something and find some way to kill time. I am sure the authorities will send a rescue crew and weâll be out of here in no time.â
I opened the storage closet and felt my heart sink as I looked on the nearly empty room. We were down to only a couple of boxes of crackers and a few bottles of water. We had rationed the food carefully, but it had been over 2 weeks now, and we had almost exhausted our supply. I wasnât looking forward to telling the others. Things had been getting tense. The power went out on the third day, and by now every cellphone we had was dead. Not that anyone could get a signal before that, anyway. The water had risen all the way to the fifth floor, so we were all trapped together on the top floor of the hotel, with nowhere else to go, if it rose any further. The guests had mostly given up hope for rescue, and the rest of us knew that was never a hope to begin with. So, now it looked like the six of us were just going to be trapped up here to starve, if we didnât drown first. I covered my face with my hands.
âThat bad, huh?â
âVincent. No, itâs⌠itâs notâŚâ what was the point in lying about it? âYeah, itâs that bad. We are almost out of food, and the water has risen at least another foot since yesterday.â
âWhat are we going to do?â
âI have no idea. Letâs just get back to the group. We shouldnât leave Manny alone, in case the guests come out of their rooms.â
âRight.â
We walked back to the central hallway together. As we entered the room, I saw Manny with his back to us, removing a soaked shirt. Even in the dim light, it was clear that his back was webbed with dozens of scars and cuts. Vincent cleared his throat and Manny hurriedly tugged on a dry shirt.
âI patched the hole in the roof,â he explained. âThe rain should stop getting in from there, at least. And I brought down a full barrel of rainwater and replaced it with an empty one.â
âThank you, Manny. At least the water from the sky is⌠normal. Because we are going to have to start drinking that water from time now on, I think.â
âAnd the food?â Manny asked.
âSome crackers, nothing more.â
âWell, I guess we will all need to tighten our belts, then.â
A moment of heavy silence passed between us, before a door burst open and Jack emerged.
âWhereâs the food?â he barked. âWeâre hungry and the table is bare.â
âFoodâs gone,â Manny replied coolly. âThere is water in the barrel, to take the edge off.â
âWe canât survive on only water.â
âWe can, for another couple of weeks.â
âSo that is your plan, to slowly starve to death?â
Manny shrugged but didnât reply.
âWell, suit yourselves, I have a better plan.â
Jack turned on his heel and stormed out.
âWhat do you think they will do?â Vincent asked.
âHe said already, didnât he? Build a raft,â Manny replied.
âMaybe that isnât a bad idea,â I offered. âWe could help, try to get out of here?â
âHas attempting to leave ever worked?â Manny asked. âNo, all we can do is hunker down until this resolves itself. And I donât think going out on that water is a good idea.â
âShould we try to stop them, then?â
âNo. If they are focused on building, it will keep them off our backs, for the time being. Let them do what they want.â
Vincent and I spent the next few days watching the three men lash together furniture using heavy objects as improvised hammers and strips of torn bed linens as ropes. They seemed to actually have some idea of what they were doing, and they quickly fell into a rhythm, with Stewart and Jack doing most of the planning and construction and Lesley being ordered to fetch supplies and carry heavy objects. He grumbled about it, but did what they told him. They mostly didnât even notice we were there, as long as we made a show of occupying ourselves with some cleaning task or another. They never even bothered to ask why we were still cleaning and maintaining a flooded, sinking hotel all day. It was hard to tell if they just paid so little attention to us that they didnât notice, or if they simply figured it was our way of coping with the situation. Occasionally, they would ask us for some material they needed but could not find, and we would help as much as we could, then they would go back to ignoring us. On the third day, when the raft was beginning to look seaworthy, Jack sat back on his heels, admiring their handiwork.
âWell, boys? What do you think? Will it float?â
Stewart rubbed his nose with his thumb,
âI think itâs as fine a vessel as we have ever crewed, captain.â
Jack laughed,
âAnd you thought we had left those days behind us for good, eh chief?â
âThey are. But it looks like it will come in handy for us, one more time. Good luck, huh?â
âGood luck?â Lesleyâs face turned dark; he had been increasingly dour over the last few days. âI donât see the good luck in any of this. I think we are reaping our just reward.â
âDonât be ridiculous, Les, this flood has nothing to do with us.â
âNo? You think all this is normal, then? Itâs been raining nonstop for weeks, the water keeps rising, no one has come looking for us. Itâs likeâŚâ he hesitated before continuing. âItâs like we are alone in our own private hell. Just us and dark water everywhere. I donât know how you arenât thinking about it. I canât stop. I see his face whenever I close my eyes. I see the dark puddle in the bottom of the lifeboat. Maybe this is what we deserve.â
Jack backhanded him across the face,
âPull yourself together, swabbie. And donât speak again until youâve regained your composure,â he turned back to Stewart. âNow, we need to get this to the roof before we finish lashing it together, or it wonât fit. Then, we can either find a way to launch it, or we can wait until the water rises enough, what do you think, Mr. Stewart?â
âWell, captain, I say we rig up some ropes to lower it, because if we wait until the water is that high and anything goes wrong, we wonât have another chance.â
âVery good. Alright, Les, help us lift these pieces.â
The raft was relocated to the roof and the next 3 days were spent lashing it together and making the ropes strong enough to lower it the ever-dwindling distance into the dark water. When they were finally ready to launch, Vincent, Manny and I gathered on the roof to watch. I had to admit, I was really beginning to hope they succeeded, even if it didnât seem likely. We were still rationing out the last few crackers, but three or four crackers a day did little to even take the edge off of the hunger, which gnawed on my guts like an animal. If this didnât work, I wasnât sure what was going to happen. I looked over at Manny, his face grim and starting to look a little gaunt. As he turned to face me, I saw blood coating his neck and seeping into his shirt collar from a cut near his ear.
âYouâre bleeding.â
He reached up and touched his neck, bringing his hand aways stained crimson,
âShaving cut,â he offered, wiping it off absently with his hand.
I raised an eyebrow, but let it go. I had noticed Manny with little cuts or scars before, but he was always doing landscaping work or maintenance, so small cuts and injuries didnât seem unusual. But suddenly, in such close quarters and confined indoors, it was apparent that he seemed to injure himself more than I would expect.
Curious, isnât it? Al asked, speaking up for the first time in sometime.
âYou have something to tell me?â I mumbled under my breath.
No, just noting that there is power in blood. I wonder what he uses it for?
Power, huh? That was probably worth thinking about. Later. For now, my attention was drawn to the makeshift ropes lowering the raft into the water. The raft settled into the water with barely a ripple, the liquid was entirely too thick and seemed to stick to the wood like oil, and the sound when it hit was less a splash and more of a splat. The three men looked at each other, confusion and concern on their faces.
âThat doesnât much seem like normal water, Capân,â Lesley noted.
âProbably lots of mud and silt mixed in, itâs nothing,â Jack waved away the concern. âGet down there and then you can help us down.â
Lesley shook his head, mutely.
âFine, Stewart?â
The other man didnât look happy about it, but he nodded apprehensively and moved to the edge of the roof and clambered down onto the raft. As it bucked and shifted under his weight, he lay down, waiting for it to stabilize, but instead, the rolling and pitching seemed to increase. Then, from the water under the boat came dozens of pale human hands. They were terribly bloated and marbled with green and grey. Corpse hands. Stewart looked down, terror written plainly on his face.
âNo! It wasnât my fault. I didnât cause it,â he shouted at the corpses looming under him in the dark water. âYou want the captain, not me!â
If that was meant to mollify them, it didnât work. The hands gripped the wood and pulled, capsizing the raft and pitching Stewart into the water. He screamed as he hit the surface. Not just from fear, but pain. He tried clinging to flipped raft, but hands wrapped around his torso, trying to pull him into the dark. I could swear I heard whispers rising from the surface: Join us.
âHelp me, please!â he cried.
He was too far down to reach from the roof, but maybe there was another way.
âHurry, if we can get to the windows on the 5th floor, we can pull him in,â I shouted.
Vincent nodded and we ran down the stairs, searching for the room closest to him in the water. The screaming helped. When we dragged him inside, he was covered in scratches and bites from teeth that looked very human, some very deep and freely bleeding. His skin was stained from the dark water. The hands continued to reach for him, so I slammed the window shut, leaving them to paw at the glass, just as Manny burst into the room, followed by the other two guests. Seeing the seriousness of his injuries, Manny moved closer, kneeling next to me.
âSome of these are very deep. We need to get pressure on the wounds. Go grab some towels,â he instructed Stewartâs companions.
He inspected the bites and scratches more closely,
âLucy, this bite is on an artery, press down on it hard, or he will bleed out. Vincent, go get some soap and water, we will have to clean this as best we can, under the circumstances.â
Vincent rose and Manny and I were left alone with Stewart, who seemed to have passed out.
âYou seem to know what you are doing,â I noted, pressing down on the bleeding wound.
âI⌠I was a doctor, once,â he didnât meet my eyes when he said it.
âWow.â
âIt was a long time ago. Another life.â
âWhy didnât you everâŚâ I was interrupted when Stewartâs eyes snapped open.
âI need a priest,â Stewart grabbed Mannyâs collar, his eyes fevered and unfocused. âI need to confess my sins, before I die.â
âYou arenât going toâŚâ
âWe killed him,â he pressed on, oblivious to my objections. âAlan Ross.â
âThe billionaire?â I blurted, surprised. âBut he died in a⌠shipwreckâŚâ
I fell silent. I remembered the news stories; Ross had been on a luxury yacht on the way to the Cayman Islands when it wrecked in a storm. The entire crew was lost, except for the captain, the chief mate, and a single deckhand, who had survived in a lifeboat. Ross was in the lifeboat as well, but he had already drowned, before they were able to drag him on board. They had drifted for over two weeks, with his corpse, before they were found and rescued. It had been a major news story, about a decade ago.
âIt wasnât like the news reported,â Stewart gasped. âWhen the yacht started taking on water, we should have stayed and helped to organize the evacuation of the crew. But Ross wanted to leave right away. He offered us money if we took just him and abandoned the others. We agreed, the captain and I. Lesley was just a deckhand, but he saw us leaving and followed. We quietly launched a lifeboat and fled, leaving the others to their fates.â
âHow did Ross die?â I asked.
âHe had a bag with him. It was so heavy he could hardly carry it. When he put it in the boat, it fell open and it was filled with diamonds. He was taking them to the Caymans. When we saw that, we⌠well, we decided. If he didnât survive the shipwreck, if the diamonds were never found, who would know? We drowned him and hid the diamonds. When we were rescued, we waited awhile, then we sold them, made millions. But it wasnât worth it⌠it wasnât worth this. The guiltâŚâ
He slumped to the ground. Manny met my eyes over the body,
âI think we lost him.â
As I looked up from the body, I saw Jack and Lesley standing there in the doorway, towels in their hands. There was an ugly look on Jackâs face.
âI wish he hadnât told you that.â
âTold us what? He was raving, delusional,â I attempted.
âWe were standing right here,â he replied.
I swallowed hard. Jack advanced into the room, holding a broken table leg like a club.
âWeâve kept this secret all these years, it isnât getting out now.â
âWe wonât tell anyone,â I protested.
âThat isnât a chance I am willing to take. Besides, with the food supply exhausted, it was always going to come to this, eventually. Might as well get it over with.â
âWhat are you doing?â I heard Vincent call from the doorway.
âLesley, take care of him, will you?â Jack continued to advance on us.
âPlease Jack, hasnât there been enough death?â Lesley protested.
âDonât act all innocent, you agreed to this, just like the rest of us. In for a penny, in for a pound, my friend.â
I glanced around for a weapon. Between the three of us, we should be able to take him, but I didnât much like the look in Jackâs eyes. Manny had stood, backing slowly away as Jack advanced. Then the captain took a swing at him, Manny jumped to the side and the makeshift bat shattered the window behind him. Jackâs expression turned to one of horror as a pair of pale hands gripped the doorframe and a body began heaving itself through the open window. The broken glass sliced its bloated flesh to ribbons, but it didnât halt the creatureâs ingress. Dark, thick liquid that smelled of death oozed from its wounds.
âAlan!â Jack exclaimed, backing away swinging his bat at the creature.
âYou owe me,â it gurgled.
We all backed out into the hall, but the creature advanced, slowly, leaving a trail of black liquid on the carpet as it walked.
âIs it money you want? I can get you your money back, your diamonds,â Jack offered.
âWhat use do I have for money?â it wheezed. âYou owe me a life.â
Jack hit the body with his club, but it didnât slow its progress. He screamed as it reached out a hand and closed it around his throat. Jack was lifted off his feet and the creature carried him to the stairs and plunged him into the dark water. At first, he flailed and fought, but a dozen hands rose from the water, gripping every part of his body. When he was completely immobilized, the corpse released him, letting him be dragged down into the depths. Then, it turned,
âNow,â it spoke to Lesley. âWill you fight, or come willingly?â
Lesley was trembling so hard he could barely stand,
âPlease, Iâm sorry, I beg you, spare me.â
The creatureâs lips curled into a grotesque smile,
âDo you regret what you did to me?â
âI do, I do. I never should have agreed with their plan. Please, have mercy.â
âDid you have mercy on me, when I begged?â
Lesley shook his head.
âThen accept your fate.â
âWhat⌠what do you want me to do?â
âWalk into the water. Give your life willingly. Perhaps they will spare you, if you do,â the creature laughed, dark liquid bubbling from its mouth.
Lesley nodded haltingly and began to walk towards the stairs, stepping into the water, he walked down until he was submerged up to his waist. Then, the hands wrapped around his arms and torso and abruptly dragged him under. For a long moment, it seemed like he was gone, the same as Jack, but a moment later, he was thrown back onto the landing. Lesley raised his eyes, now as black as the water, and the creature smiled again, a tooth falling from its mouth as it did.
âVery good,â it burbled. âYou have been baptized and born again into a new life.â
Lesley nodded, a serene smile on his face. Without a word, he rose and walked back into the room we had vacated only a moment before. Outside the window, the raft had been righted and floated serenely on the water. He looked down at Stewartâs body, then picked it up and draped it over his shoulder. Glancing back at the three of us, he winked,
âA snack for the journey.â
Then, he stepped out of the window onto the raft and drifted away.
âDonât suppose any of you would care to join him?â the corpse of Alan Ross inquired. âBe born anew in the cleansing water?â
We all shook our heads silently.
âOh well, another time, then.â
And with that, the corpse walked into the water and disappeared.
That night, our usual meals appeared in our rooms, and by the next morning, the water had receded, as if it had never been there. The electricity came back on, and the rain stopped. I was finally able to charge my phone and post this account. I tried asking Manny for more information about his time as a doctor but is as reticent as ever. I will keep trying, though, because Vincent and Al are right about one thing, there is something suspicious about how much he knows that he shouldnât. But, that is a problem for another day, after all there is no need to rush, we arenât going anywhere.
Until next time,
Lucy

- New items added this week are in bold
- You can find the full list along with thread examples for these topics and if/how 343 has acknowledged them on the 343 Plz wiki page
A reminder on how 343 Plz works:
- 343 Plz is a comprehensive list of wildly popular suggestions/feedback relating to Halo games. This will be a list that is generated by the community and will be visible to everyone. Users can submit a request to include an item on 343 Plz and, provided it meets the criteria, it will be added the following week alongside the weekly thread.
- The 343 Plz list will be on both our wiki as well as the weekly sticky thread. The sticky thread will provide a prominent place on halo to routinely list and discuss these items, as well as suggest new ones.
- Once a topic has been added to 343 Plz, it will be 'retired' from the subreddit until there is either significant news relating to the topic, or if the actual topic is added/changed to the game.
You can find the 343 Plz wiki page here: https://www.reddit.com/halo/wiki/343plz
You can also check out the 343 Plz announcement thread here: https://www.reddit.com/halo/comments/ud70v9/introducing_343_plz_a_list_made_from_your_feedback/
How do I submit to 343 Plz?
- Find three recent popular threads talking about your feedback; we're looking for multiple front page threads (300+ upvotes) and/or highly-active discussions (100+ comments) over the past few months
- Submit your idea and the required threads either in this sticky or via this Mod Mail template
- If your idea does not have the required threads, it won't be added; instead, make a standalone post about your topic
What is the point of this weekly thread?
The point of this weekly thread is to organize and sticky popular community feedback for 343, allow discussion of these 'retired' items, and suggest new ideas for 343 Plz.

2023.05.29 15:49 Barefootfamily Yellow diarrhea.
Hello, I joined Reddit just so I could research IBS and symptoms. Background: Gallbladder was removed in January 2021. Appendix removed in early April 2022. I had a few diarrhea flare ups before the gallbladder removal and and ultrasound found large polyps so they suggested removal. Within the past 3 years (even before GB removal) I have had a lot more on/off bouts of diarrhea. 13 months ago (1 month after appendix removal) I started having my first yellow diarrhea. Sometimes it looked like I was having straight liquid bile coming out. Somehow it cleared up either by doing a gluten free diet for a week, or being prescribed amoxicillin (for pus at surgery site). They tested my blood and stool in the middle of the yellow diarrhea bout and nothing came back abnormal. In July 2022 I had an MRI done and nothing was abnormal.
Now, since May 18th I have had yellow in my stool (diarrhea most days) every single time I go. I get a sudden bloating below my belly button and in the left side, then it is immediate diarrhea.
Does anybody have suggestion on how to clear this up? Sorry for the very long message, I just wanted to provide a backstory. I started on protein and glisten free again two days ago and it hasnât helped.
Thank you for the help. I have Not had an IBS diagnosis.

2023.05.29 14:37 Zealousideal_Virus97 Suggestions for itinerary mid June
Tickets bought, rooms booked, car rental complete. Heading to Pacific City for 2 nights and Yachats for one night. Landing at PDX at 9:30 and plan to head over to Cannon Beach and explore areas as we head south to Pacific City.
We are interested in hikes, casual towns, relaxing sights and good local food, coffee, beer, live music, farmers markets and unusual iconic spots.

We have a nice dinner Monday night but any Recs on casual spots?
Anything that is seasonally happening around these areas in mid June?
Weâd like to explore north on Sun when we land. Is it safe to park car with luggage in Cannon beach? Suggestions on that arrival day given an 1:45hr drive down to PC? Weâd like to see Cannon/ Tillmook

2023.05.29 14:05 yellowplantstand Understanding Hashimotoâs
Im 34F and recently got diagnosed with Hashimotoâs. In addition, found out my testosterone and progesterone are low. My doctor is prescribing liothyronine as well as progesterone hormone. She also recommended testosterone treatment but it is not covered under insurance so holding off on that for now. She also recommended trying gluten and/or dairy free so we are in the process of going gluten free. Iâll add dairy free next if I need to. She also recommended limiting exposure to BPAâs and switching to non toxic hygiene products, etc. I always thought that that was not a real thing that would really affect me but from the research Iâve done I can see that I have been very wrong and BPAâs, etc have a huge part in disregulating hormones/thyroid. We are switching over to glass, limiting plastic, and slowly switching to more natural cleaning/hygiene products.
The reason I went in for testing was because last October 2022 through February 2023 I was consistently feeling off and like I was getting sick (extremely nauseous, shaky, fatigued, vomiting sometimes, headaches, etc). It was very consistent but not constant. I could not figure out a sensible pattern in why I was feeling off. It seemed to come out of nowhere and would last for days to weeks at a time. It was mild enough where I could still do what I needed to do on a daily basis but I felt like shit and would sometimes throw up. The last few months though (March to now) Iâve been feeling pretty good. It was a very busy time at work when I was feeling sick and I had a lot on my plate so Iâm wondering if thatâs why I was feeling so bad. I wouldnât say I was âstressedâ because I love my job and âstressâ has such a negative connotation but I did have a lot going on.
All that to say, Iâm trying to figure out this hashimotos thing. Now that Iâve been diagnosed but Iâm feeling good it doesnât feel real. Itâs hard to wrap my brain around. Does anyone have hashimotos but feel fine? Do you have âflare upsâ when you are very busy and/or stressed? When I start taking the medicine will it eliminate any stress related (or other) flare ups? Do you have any tips for stress relief that work for flare ups? Do you actively avoid BPAâs and use natural hygiene products, etc? Any advice is helpful! This is so new to me and Iâm trying to learn and understand as much as I can.

2023.05.29 02:39 puncheddirt Are they not really gluten free then? I'm new to going gluten free. Please inform me if I'm wrong.
2023.05.29 02:26 throwstuff165 Here's a long analysis of what it might take to trade for a second lottery pick.
So, as a lot of us expected,
a recent report says that the Spurs have interest in making a rather unusual move by their standards to pick up a second first-rounder in the draft next month, presumably to acquire a PG that they hope can start next to Victor Wembanyama for the next decade-plus. Itâs an idea that had been gaining traction with fans even before the real whispers started because of how much sense it seemed to make - this is seen as a relatively deep draft, with a lot of intriguing options at a position of need that are currently being mocked in the mid-to-late lottery. I'm sure most people have seen plenty of discussion about it on this sub over the past few days, and in every thread, people are asking the smart first question: "Okay, but what would it take?"
There's a lot of things that factor into that answer, and I'm just some internet dork who watches and reads about and talks about and thinks about basketball too much so I obviously have no idea what kind of discussions GMs are actually having on that front. But I thought it would at least help to look at what the positions we'd presumably be targeting have brought back in trade in the past decade, and then try to approximate value with the Spurs' assets. Firstly, though...
Why would San Antonio do this? There's two ways to answer that question, and the first is to look at it from the perspective of what the Spurs
don't have: a long-term starting Point Guard. I like Tre Jones a lot - he's everything we could've hoped for as a second-round pick and then some - but he's not a player that's going to feasibly run the offense for a contending team. He'd make a fantastic backup, and the Spurs are obviously hoping that Sochan and Victor and to a lesser extent Branham evolve into above-average playmakers, especially as the organization makes strides to get closer to their positionless basketball philosophy. But I don't think any of that is going to supersede a desire to bring a more traditional lead guard into the fold, especially considering what the team
does have.
And what San Antonio has right now is a lot of picks. Maybe not as many as OKC or Utah, but a lot nonetheless. Six first-rounders that aren't our own, to be exact, plus the swap rights to Atlanta's 2026 first-rounder and over twenty second-rounders. Simply put, I can guarantee you that the team won't be making all of those picks, because it's not smart roster building to be quite so overloaded with very young players when the idea is to start being competitive again. Having a lot of young talent with promise is a good problem to have until you hit the point of having so many mouths to feed that it starts stunting their development, and we're already looking at a potential slight roster crunch this year. As an example, the Pacers, who are arguably behind us in terms of the rebuilding process now since we won the Wemby sweepstakes, have 5 picks in this year's draft, 3 of them first-rounders, and Kevin Pritchard has
already come out and said they're not making all of them. The Spurs, by comparison, could potentially have FIVE first-rounders in 2025 depending on league standings over the next couple years. Eventually, some of these picks will be used as a package to get one better pick or a star player. And there's a good argument that, if it's going to be the former, now is the time, because again, this is a strong draft.
So what specific assets do we have? I'll go ahead and rank them in descending order by my perception of their value, excluding Wemby because he's obviously the most untouchable of untouchables.
- Sochan and Vassell: Very clearly big parts of this team moving forward and likely starters when our theoretical championship window opens
- Atlanta 2027 unprotected FRP: The Hawks are such a dumpster fire right now in some ways that this could easily end up being a Top 5 pick - notably, the last year of Trae's current contract is 2026-27
- Keldon Johnson: Anyone else tired of talking about him? I'll have a more in-depth look at why trading him might make sense later in this post, but he's still just 23 years old with room to grow and even with his deficiencies, he's got a lot of attractive qualities even if his long-term ceiling might be "good sixth man."
- Atlanta 2025 unprotected FRP
- Atlanta 2026 pick swap: There's an argument that this should be above the 2025 unprotected pick because the 2025 class is looking kinda rough and 2026 includes Cameron Boozer and Cooper Flagg, but ultimately having an extra pick in an individual future draft is, I think, more valuable than a swap because it allows for a move-up package
- Toronto 2024 FRP protected 1-6: Masai Ujiri and the Raptors are a little hard to read right now, even more than usual, but I think there's a good chance this could convey next year and still be in the top 10 somewhere.
- Zach Collins: A good starting center on a bad team or a very good backup center on a better team. He's got the Pop endorsement and trading him would leave our C rotation very light unless we've got something else cooking (not a good thing with Victor coming in), but I wouldn't want him to be the sticking point that holds up a potential good deal.
- Malaki Branham: I might be overrating him a bit here because I'm personally very high on Branham, but I think it's close enough. He's shown very promising flashes at the NBA level already, and if he can get more consistent from 3 it'll be very hard to stop him from scoring. Becoming even a passable defender on top of it would give him 6MOTY-level upside.
- Chicago 2025 FRP protected 1-10: I think Chicago's gonna be forced to blow it up soon. Multiple teams below them in the standings last year should be markedly improved already this season and they might even lose Vooch. So this may not convey for a while, if at all.
- Boston 2028 pick swap, protected for 1st overall: This is probably about even with the Chicago pick, really. Things can change quick in the NBA but I don't expect Boston to be bad for a while, and again, it's just a swap.
- Charlotte 2024 pick, lottery protected: This will almost definitely not convey next year. Maaaaybe in 2025, but I'm really starting to doubt LaMelo's ability to stay on the floor. And a pick outside of the lottery in a bad draft class won't be worth all that much.
- Blake Wesley: I've never been a Wesley believer and he didn't show anything last year to convince me I might be wrong, but maybe some team likes his upside enough that he could work as a sweetener.
- Doug McDermott: A knockdown perimeter movement shooter who isn't worth much on his own, but could be attractive as a veteran piece for a team that can't otherwise hit 3s.
- All of our 20+ SRPs
We also, again, have all of our own FRPs, but there's too many unknowns across the next couple years for me to try and predict their value. Suffice it to say that I wouldn't trade next year's under any circumstances, would only let go of 2025's if it was protected for the lottery, and would probably be willing to have talks about any of them in or after 2026.
Potential Trade Analysis Before anything else, I want to be clear that I'm not advocating for all or even most of these trades. I'm simply doing my best to demonstrate what we might have to give up based on history.
And again, there are a lot of mitigating factors to these other recent trades. Draft class strength, roster makeup, financial situation, etc. - it's impossible to ever get 1-to-1 comparisons for something like this. But I think they work pretty well as rough examples.
Oh, and
here's an aggregation of the current "professional" mock drafts out there in case anyone wants an idea of what prospects we'd be talking about in each position.
One last thing: When I'm talking about trades that have been made for these picks historically, I'm only including ones that were made between the lottery and draft day or on draft night specifically, since obviously the slots for future picks in other trades wouldn't have been known at the time of the deal.
Pick #5 (Detroit) - 2018: DAL trades w/lightly-protected 2019 1st for pick 3 (the now-famous Luka/Trae trade)
PROPOSAL:
This. We don't have a great comparison point to open with here, but this feels about right to me. No one, media or fans, can agree on Keldon's trade value, and there's some teams I think he very much would not fit on, but I think it makes a lot of sense on Detroitâs end for the reasons Edwards laid out - he opens up a ton of options for the Pistons to experiment with assuming that they actually get a full year of Cade this season and, in the best-case scenario, can become a very good sixth man for them long-term. They really need a young wing, and after the gut punch of falling to #5 where theyâre in the unenviable position of having to decide between a bunch of low-floor, high-ceiling guys, they might be tempted to take out the guesswork and go with someone whoâs already shown what he can do for a couple years. I'll return to this comparison later, but if Detroit takes Cam Whitmore in this spot, for example, and he becomes what Keldon is now, I think they'd call it a successful pick.
MY EVALUATION: Spurs say no. I think Keldon has more value to SAS than anyone they could be targeting in this spot unless Amen Thompson is still there and the FO is supremely confident in him becoming a decent off-ball player.
Pick #6 (Orlando) - 2013: NOP trades to PHI with protected 2014 first for Jrue Holiday and pick 42
PROPOSAL: SAS trades Devin Vassell, CHI 1st and pick 33 for picks 6 and 36
Iâve seen rumors that ORL might want to package this and their #11 pick to move up, but I donât know where that comes from. Canât see Charlotte taking a deal like that, Portland and allegedly Houston want immediate help instead of two more rookies, and the #5 from Detroit wouldnât really be worth it from the Magicâs standpoint. Maybe they can send #6 and #11 plus Suggs to the Rockets? Either way, the Magic are another of those teams I was talking about earlier that already has a lot of young players that they want to get touches, so I wouldnât be surprised if they move one of their two picks for something else.
Holiday was coming off an all-star season, and though Vassell is obviously not an all-star (at least not yet), I do think he's a pretty decent approximation of 2013 Jrue Holiday. Same age, and the best players on their respective teams. Good defense, good outside shot and still some room to grow as a self-creator. I think he was probably looking at some MIP votes last year if he hadnât gotten hurt.
MY EVALUATION: Spurs say no, obviously. They're not trading Devin. I think they could theoretically get this slot just by giving up a big package of picks, but at that point the evaluation becomes too difficult to really be worth it for this exercise IMO.
Pick #7 (Indiana) - 2017: MIN trades pick 7 with Kris Dunn and LaVine to CHI for Jimmy Butler and pick 16
Obviously thereâs no real similar deal to be found here - if we had a Jimmy Butler weâd be in a wildly different situation in the first place. I could try to put together a big picks package, but IND is guaranteed a very promising prospect at this spot and, in my opinion, they have too many holes in their team right now (or at least a very large defense-shaped hole) to move it for futures when they're already looking at more picks than they want to make.
MY EVAULATION: They'd ask for Vassell and they won't get him; this pick won't be ours. Moving on.
Pick #8 (Washington) - 2016: SAC trades to PHX for picks 13 and 28, a future 2, and rights to Bogdan Bogdanovic
PROPOSAL: SAS trades Malaki Branham, Tre Jones, TOR 1st, CHA 1st for pick 8 and Delon Wright
Hereâs where things start getting a little interesting, because this is the first slot where I can see one of the presumptive primary targets for the Spurs enter the mix in Anthony Black. Indiana might give him a look if they really value his defense and versatility, but I think Walker and Hendricks are more likely directions. So that brings us to Washington. That organization makes my head hurt but I have a hard time seeing a universe where they donât make this pick. Either they keep smashing their head against the wall of irrelevance or they finally decide to tear it down, and either way it doesnât make much sense for this pick to find its way to us.
But if the Wizards were to trade this pick, I imagine it'd be because theyâre getting a young and high-upside prospect whoâs already shown legit NBA flashes in Branham, which theyâre sorely lacking and could reasonably be thought of as equivalent to or probably even a little bit better than Bogdanovic in 2016. This also gets them an uber-reliable young backup PG that can be had for a few cheap years (something you'd be pretty happy to get with a #28 pick) and the Spurs take back Wright for salary purposes and to have a veteran PG option of their own, though itâs entirely possible WAS values Wright more highly anyway for defensive purposes.
MY EVALUATION: Both teams say no, although if we put Wesley in there instead of Branham I think things get interesting from the Spurs' point of view. You can never predict the Wizards, but I think Michael Winger would have to be given an offer they canât refuse to tempt them not to just stay here and pick Black or Hendricks or Whitmore or whoever else has fallen to them. Reportedly, he has the blessing to finally rebuild if he so chooses, and itâs hard to see them not starting the process off here. Not for nothing, but Winger used to work under Presti.
I do wonder what would happen if the Spurs offered Keldon for this pick straight-up, though. If Kuzma leaves, the Washington wing situation suddenly looks completely ghastly. Returning to the "Whitmore-Johnson test," if the Wizards picked Cam up here and he turned into Keldon, I think they'd be quite pleased. Not "all-time draft victory" pleased, but a huge win for a team that's mangled their draft a couple times recently.
Pick #9 (Utah) - 2013: MIN trades to UTA for picks 14 and 21
PROPOSAL: SAS trades CHA 1st and CHI 1st for pick 9
Pretty simple here. If a team thinks that Chicago pick will convey, late lottery seems like a reasonable place to expect it to land. If the Charlotte pick conveys, it'll be in that 15-20 range.
MY EVALUATION: Utah says no because there's a good chance those picks don't convey, because picks in future drafts are always treated as less valuable than those in the same draft, and because Ainge doesn't make trades when he's not fleecing the other team for all their worth. Also, Utah doesn't really need more future picks either.
You know what? That was boring. How about another option?
PROPOSAL: SAS trades Keldon for pick 9
The Ainge factor remains, but in a vacuum I do think this is pretty fair value straight up. Letâs talk about the SAS rotation for a minute assuming they do indeed make SOME trade for a PG prospect. Wemby and Vassell are starting, no question. Collins got the Pop endorsement at the end of last season, so heâs in there too. That leaves four players fighting for two starting spots: Keldon, Sochan, Tre Jones, and the newly drafted PG. Sochan started 53 of the 56 games he played last year, and with the excellent upside he has, I have a hard time imagining heâs not getting the nod at the 3; even if heâs not, heâll be getting tons of minutes. I and others have supported the Point Sochan experiment, but if weâre bringing in a real PG, I doubt weâll see a whole lot more of that and they certainly wonât start a Sochan/Vassell/Keldon/Wemby/Collins lineup. So Keldonâs probably sliding to the sixth man role. And thatâs fine - if he has a role on this team when theyâre ready to contend again, itâll be that one - but trading a sixth man for the right to select the guy you theoretically think can be Victorâs running mate for a decade, especially when thereâs plenty of other guys off the bench that you want to keep giving minutes to, is more than reasonable all things considered.
As far as UTA goes, they need a PG prospect all on their own but I think they can get Kobe Bufkin with their #16 pick and I kinda love the fit there for him. If youâre the Jazz, would you rather have Keldon and Bufkin or, say, Wallace and Leonard Miller? I donât know the answer to that, but I think thereâs at least a chance theyâd prefer the latter, as even with a pretty lean roster I donât know how badly they want to find playing time for three first rounders this year. Keldon and Markkanen donât even step on each otherâs toes in the UTA system, and though theyâll definitely continue the tank this year to avoid losing their 2024 pick, Keldon could easily still be around on a very team-friendly deal by the time theyâre ready to start pushing for the playoffs again.
MY EVALUATION: Utah says no strictly because Ainge gonna Ainge. I'm not sure I'd do it if I was the Spurs, either, because injuries will happen and Victor might get more DNPs for load management this year than any of us want to see. But itâs a conversation worth having and I canât say Iâd be falling to my knees in an HEB if it happened on draft night.
Pick #10 (Dallas) - 2018: PHI trades to PHX for pick 16 and a Miami first in 2021
- 2017: SAC trades to POR for picks 15 and 20
- 2014: PHI trades to ORL for pick 12, 2015 second, and 2017 first*
Strap in, this is a fun one.
PROPOSAL:
This. This is the pick in the lottery that I think is most likely to move, outside of maaaybe #3. Thatâs kind of awkward, because Dallas wants (needs) talent to help them win now and we donât have much of that. Specifically, they need defense and a real starting center - if they can get both of those in one guy, so much the better. Keldon doesnât move the needle for them IMO and weâre obviously not gonna give up Vassell at this slot. The OTHER thing Dallas needs, though, is something we do have in spades: cap room. Our old friend Davis Bertans has one of the worst contracts in the league for next season - $17m for a guy whose defense deficiencies make him unplayable - and while he only has $5m guaranteed in 2024, I think Dallas needs help right now to keep from running a real risk of fracturing their relationship with their best player since Dirk.
I think itâs POSSIBLE Dallas just trades this pick with Bertans and, say, McGee for, the TOR 1st + CHA 1st + a bucket of SRPs or something, then tries their luck in free agency (to go for Jakob or Brook etc.) before using their new draft capital to seek another trade if need be, but I think itâs more likely that weâd be looking at a full-on three-teamer here. Thereâs a lot of options there depending on which teams are panicking or not, and most of them I donât find overly likely. Does Boston overreact and give up Robert Williams in a psychotic episode? Does Atlanta move Capela? Eh. Maybe, I guess, but I doubt it. How about Cleveland, though?
This is a pretty skeletal framework of what a deal could look like so donât take it as absolute gospel. Three-team trades are often complicated enough that there could easily be a few more moving pieces were such a trade to happen.
MY EVALUATION: This could be a winner. I donât think CLE
has to trade Allen yet, but if theyâre not exploring the option and asking themselves some tough questions about whether the pairing with Mobley is the real long-term answer after what happened against the Knicks, theyâre not doing their job. THJ shot almost the same percentage on 3s as Caris Levert did last year on over three more attempts per game, and his defense, while not amazing by any means, is better than it gets credit for. Getting rid of Rubio also gives them a little extra salary to play with in free agency - itâs not much, and itâs not a great class, but I think thereâs enough there for Cleveland to find a way to make themselves a better playoff team than they were last year. This also lets them recoup some draft capital that is basically nonexistent for them right now after the Mitchell trade.
On the Spurs side, even if Rubio is basically washed, heâs an incredibly smart and experienced PG who could do a lot to mentor the young guy that weâd be bringing in at the position, and if he needs to come in for a few minutes here and there to hold down the fort, thatâs fine too - weâre not trying to be good yet. Iâd be surprised if we donât bring in a vet guard in some fashion this offseason regardless. Plus, we have to get to the salary floor before the season starts anyway; why not kill three birds with one stone on this trade?
Cleveland
probably still says no. I don't know if they're quite ready to pull the plug on Allen. But I don't think it's that far off.
Pick #11 (Orlando) - 2022: NYK trades to OKC for 3 protected first-rounders (DET (protected), WAS (protected), DEN, all 2023)
- 2018: CHA trades to LAC for pick 12 and two 2s
- 2016: ORL trades with Oladipo and Ilyasova to OKC in return for Ibaka
PROPOSAL: SAS trades TOR 1st, CHI 1st, and Doug McDermott for pick 11
Last year's trade is the easiest comparison to make on this list. Not perfect, still, but with the added context of what other trades in this range have brought back, I think it still works. The DET and WAS picks were fairly heavily protected (top 18 and lottery, respectively) and I donât think it surprised anyone that the Nuggets pick is as late as it is, so despite it being three first rounders the overall value OKC traded wasnât huge. Even with the Knicks having financial incentive to move off the pick, the package was pretty well in line with historical trades in this range. That said, I think people are viewing the talent around this slot higher than 2022âs at the time, so the offer might need to still be a tiny bit stronger. But one could
reasonably argue the TOR pick alone is more valuable than anything else that's been given for this slot in the last 10 years.
Let's talk about the Magic a little more. Letâs say Orlando is pretty happy with what theyâve got right now, which I think they should be. Banchero was a very deserving ROTY, Franz is a bucket, and theyâve got a lot of promising supplemental pieces. They looked pretty dangerous at times last year, especially in the second half of the season when they were healthy. What they DONâT have is a lot of excess draft capital. They own Denverâs pick in 2025 which isnât likely to be very valuable, and other than that they have only their own firsts. A trade like this allows them the chance to keep adding lottery talent into the future even if they expectedly become a consistent playoff team, and since they also have #6 this year they donât even have to completely go without a shiny new rookie to do it. Doug is included because the return still felt a tad light to me and because Orlando was 25th in the league in 3PT% last year - itâll help if they get a full season of Gary Harris, but if they want to make a strong run at the play-in, they might need a little more. Lots of mocks like them to take Gradey Dick here, and while McDermott obviously wouldnât figure into their long term plans, if theyâre making to look a little noise this year, McDermott is almost definitely giving them more than what Dick would as a rookie.
MY EVALUATION: This is my favorite slot to target and I think it's a fair trade for both teams. Orlando doesn't necessarily
need to add two more lottery guys to their roster this year when they can conceivably make a push for the play-in with what they already have, even while still getting touches for their foundational pieces. The Spurs like McDermott and I'm sure would love to keep him around all else being equal, but I don't think they'd let him stand in the way of getting their PG of the future. It might take the CHA pick as well or maybe a bunch of seconds or something, but I think we have something here all things considered.
Pick #12 (Oklahoma City) - 2016: ATL acquires from UTA in three-team trade (sends Jeff Teague to IND who sends George Hill to UTA)
Now this spot on the other hand... There's nothing to be done here. Thereâs nothing to be done here. Teague averaged 15pts and 6ast per game as a starter for 5 years in ATL with an all-star season in â15. Hill had slightly worse stats in 4 years as a starter in Indiana. Tre Jones plus the TOR 1st might be comparable value, but OKC doesnât need a PG even at the backup position and they already have more future picks than they know what to do with. The scuttlebutt seems to be saying OKC will trade up if anything, which makes sense, and they certainly donât need to do anything drastic after the improvement they showed last year and Holmgren still waiting in the wings. Iâve done plenty of looking for an angle on this pick and I just donât see one. Theyâve even got plenty of cap room and no bad salary to begin with. Weâll just move on.
Pick #13 (Toronto) - 2022: CHA trades to NYK for a Denver 1st and four 2nds, who then trade to DET after the draft with Kemba for a Milwaukee 1st in 2025
- 2017: DEN trades to UTA for pick 24 and Trey Lyles
- 2013: DAL trades to BOS for pick 16 and two future seconds
This one needs some intro first. I have no idea what the Raps are planning to do and
allegedly the team doesnât either. Reportedly, Masai still thinks they have the ability to win now - I donât know if that means actually winning a championship or just getting to the playoffs, but I think heâs wrong either way. Regardless, heâs such a bizarre trader that it feels impossible to predict what may or may not get a deal done. He overvalues his own players to an absurd degree, but he seems to do the same with Spurs players too. How we ever got a first rounder (that became Branham) for Thad Young and Drew Eubanks Iâll never know. So yeah, thereâs certainly a recent history of swaps between us and them, one of which famously worked out amazingly and a couple others that very much didnât.
Whatever direction Toronto does decide to go in, I think theyâd be best served just making this pick. Keldon doesnât make sense for them and weâre way past the part of the lottery where weâd even consider trading him anyway. But how about another direction?
PROPOSAL: SAS trades CHA 1st and pick 44, plus more future SRPs, and extends protection on 2024 TOR 1st to top-12 in 2024, top 10 in 2025. In return, SAS receives pick 13.
I wonder if something this simple gets it done. Maybe what we can best offer Toronto is flexibility. Maybe they carry this whole âI dunnoâ mentality into the season and then theyâre a completely mediocre team at the trade deadline again staring down the barrel of a lost season where they probably still have to give up a pick to us that could easily fall into the 7-10 range. Would they give up #13 this year to ensure they canât lose, say, pick #8 next year if their season falls apart? I donât know, but maybe. With this offer, they even still get to make a couple other picks this year, and theyâve had success with late firsts and early seconds recently on drafts that looked a good deal thinner. Hell, looking at recent swaps for this slot, this even feels almost like an overpay - I think PATFO would have to be very sure about the guy theyâre picking to give up a top-6 protected selection from a team in TORâs current position.
This is the pick right now that I think is the most up in the air as far as availability - it could change dramatically over the next month depending on what sorts of conversations are happening in Raptors HQ. They could move up, they could move down, they could stand pat. I have no idea. Itâs also the deal that I think has the most potential to come together extremely quickly on draft night; I could see Toronto having a couple specific guys in mind here and then scrambling to make a deal if theyâre suddenly off the board.
MY EVALUATION: Raptors say no, but they think long and hard about it first.
Pick #14 (New Orleans) Has not been traded in the last decade. Sorry to end with a whimper, but yeah, I donât see a deal to be made here. If theyâre healthy theyâll be a team no one wants to see in the playoffs, and if theyâre not, thereâs nothing much they can do about it at this juncture. Theyâve got plenty of future picks, they wonât want anyone on the SAS squad that weâd give up for pick 14, and there will absolutely be talent here that can help them immediately; theyâre keeping this. I GUESS they might look for someone to dump Valanciunas in favor of one of the free agent Centers, but that would be kinda risky on their part and theyâd probably want a return thatâs less abstract than just the cap room and a few second rounders or whatever.
JUST-FOR-FUN PROPOSAL:
This hilariousness. I expect PHX to have better offers on the table for Ayton, but after his disappearing act in the playoffs I wouldnât say itâs a certainty. Maybe theyâre so tired of him that this feels like an okay return, and maybe New Orleans thinks they can unlock whatever potential might be left. This also gets the Spurs the veteran C they reportedly want; JoVal isnât exactly an elite rim protector but heâs a heck of a rebounder and can stretch the floor on the other end.
Like I said, though, this is just for kicks anyway for the people who want a wild idea; I donât think the Pels want Ayton and I donât think they should.
MY EVALUATION: New Orleans says no because they're not insane and Phoenix probably does too. But it was a fun time in the trade machine.
So, just to recap... - Picks I canât see us getting: 6-8, 12, 14
- Probably not, but I could believe it: 5, 9, 13
- Sweet spot: 10 and 11
Pick #11 is the one Iâd spend most of my time going after on the phone if I was an executive. #10 has its merits, especially because I personally like the Rubio idea a lot, but we can get a Cory Joseph or George Hill in free agency just as easily to fill that role, and the larger problem is that weâre already going to be dealing with a roster crunch that Bertans and/or McGee would exacerbate. #11 could end up costing nothing but picks that we have an excess, plus maybe McDermott, who we were perfectly willing to move at the deadline anyway and who would actually open up one of those valuable roster spots as well. I also donât think thereâs much danger in Dallas taking the guy we want if he is still on the board at 10.
Again, donât take my proposals as any kind of hard offers; several of them I wouldnât even support myself, as you can see. This is just meant as a quick-and-dirty (well, at least dirty) reference for what kind of value we might be looking at in these discussions.

2023.05.28 22:59 MutatedWizard I attended Cannes 2023! Here are my Reviews and Oscar Prognosis
I'm back in Cannes for the third year in a row! I can gladly say that this festival is more than worth the effort, even though it takes a lot of work to make it magical. I've been able to continually attend thanks to the 3 Days in Cannes program, which is offered to people aged 18-28. For any of you in that age range, I highly recommend you take up the opportunity to attend!
You can check out a ton of pictures I took on my
Instagram Account and other reactions at my
Letterboxd. While I didn't get any personal pictures with celebrities like last year, I did briefly cross paths with Alice Rohrwacher after the premiere of
La Chimera, Nanni Moretti on his way to the closing ceremony, and Jonathan Glazer as he was walking away from his photoshoot with the Grand Prix.
Just as I have done with the
2021 and
2022 editions with this post, Iâm going to share my thoughts on the 13 films I saw (a new record!), as well as reactions I heard from people about other films. Iâll also give my Oscar prognosis on each one.
I'll list them in the order I saw them, and then give a final ranking at the end. This was probably the weakest edition of the three years I've been. But don't let that statement mislead you, because a bad year is still pretty good.
And before you comment, I was NOT able to see any of the out-of-competition premieres like
Killers of the Flower Moon, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, or
Elemental. I also won't be covering them in this post since those movies have been widely talked about and will be major talking points for months to come.
FILMS I SAW
A BRIGHTER TOMORROW My Review: With his own version of
Bardo, Nanni Moretti provides humorous meta commentary on his personal and professional life, as well as the state of modern filmmaking.
While not all that innovative or groundbreaking, it's still light and breezy enough to be a good time. (6/10)
Oscar Prognosis: It received much worse reviews than I anticipated. Moretti has never been on the Academy's radar either, and it looks almost certain that
La Chimera will be Italy's submission for the International Feature category.
ABOUT DRY GRASSES My Review: 197 minutes with the biggest asshole in all of Turkey. Will definitely require (and deserve) a rewatch at some point, although I'm not exactly sure I'll ever have the ambition to dive back into this again. (6/10)
Oscar Prognosis: My dissatisfaction puts me in the minority, as many other people walked away thinking this was one of Ceylan's best. It's ultra talky and ultra slow (just like all Ceylan films). Merve Dizdar's win for Best Actress was fully deserved, as she provides a much more interesting character arc compared to the main "protagonist."
Ceylan has represented Turkey numerous times for Best International Feature, but he has yet to be nominated. I doubt this will be the film to crack him in, as it's respected more than loved. It also doesn't have a US distributor, so we'll have to see who picks it up.
MONSTER My Review: Kore-eda brings
Rashomon into the modern age with
Monster, a movie that is both much more gentle and deadlier than it's title implies. While I hope be goes back to writing his own scripts, Kore-eda's touch as a director is still undeniable, especially during the final two acts. (7/10)
Oscar Prognosis: This film is eerily similar to Lukas Dhont's
Close from last year, which I mean in the best way possible.
Shoplifters remains as Kore-eda's only film to receive Oscar attention. I don't think
Monster will bring him back, especially with Japan likely to submit Miyazaki's
How Do You Live?.
MAY DECEMBER My Review: Grab the marshmallows and graham crackers because Todd Haynes is bringing the camp! Portman and Moore have delicious chemistry, with Charles Melton taking over from Austin Butler as the new CW movie star. I'm hoping the Netflix acquisition will allow a new generation of cinephiles to appreciate Haynes. (7/10)
Oscar Prognosis: I want to give major props to everyone involved with this film for not spoiling just how silly it is. Portman and Moore are going BIG with their performances, and so Is Todd Hayne's direction. This is "trash" handled by masters of the craft. I'm kind of doubtful of it being a big Oscar player on account of its weirdness. If anything, maybe the screenplay and Portman can get in with the last slots. We'll know more once Netflix outlines their release strategy for it, as I don't know if they'll bring back into the conversation with the fall festivals, or just kind of toss it aside.
LAST SUMMER My Review: Nothing like climbing the Lumiere steps at 7am to watch some stepmom-stepson action. To be honest, I only saw this so I could see at least one movie in the Grand Theatre, as everything else from schedule was one of the secondary theaters. (6/10)
Oscar Prognosis: Won't be submitted by France, nor does it have good reviews. No chance whatsoever. It's not like a Catherine Breillat film was going to gel with the Oscar's anyway.
THE ZONE OF INTEREST My Review: Sickening in the most calculated way possible,
The Zone of Interest is Jonathan Glazer's answer to the question of how evil can exist unchecked. Soak it all in during your first watch, because I doubt you'll ever want to view the world this way again. (8/10)
Oscar Prognosis: This is going to be the movie that critics will rally around during the season, so don't be surprised if NYFCC and/or LAFCA throw it their laurels. There's rumors that A24 will be releasing it around December, meaning they're likely to tour it around all of the major fall festivals.
I know we've been going by the "one international director nominated per year" rule for a while now, but I think we need to look at it a little more specifically. Every international directing nominee in the expanded era has been for a movie that won a prize at Cannes: 2011: Michel Hazanavicius (
The Artist); 2012: Michael Haneke (
Amour); 2018: PaweĹ Pawlikowski (
Cold War); 2019: Bong Joon-ho (
Parasite); 2020*: Thomas Vinterberg (
Another Round); 2021: Ryusuke Hamaguchi (
Drive My Car); 2022: Ruben Ăstlund (
Triangle of Sadness). Glazer could, and probably will, join that list. This is such a directorial showcase that that specific branch has been known to favor.
However, I wouldn't go around thinking this will be a strong contender in many other categories. This is a cold arthouse movie that is a miserable watch, meaning it could be a turnoff for a good chunk of voters. Think of it more like a Terrence Malick movie.
The script and the actors, while great, aren't the things the movie focuses on, nor are they the features you walk away most impressed by. Mica Levi's score is incredibly haunting, but it rarely featured (maybe less than 25% of the movie), so I'm not sure how much traction it will get.
It's likely between the UK and Poland for submitting it for Best International Feature. My money is on Poland considering that's where a good chunk of the funds came from, and the story is more closely connected to that region. Whoever submits it, this will be one of the major contenders.
FIREBRAND My Review: I'm a simple man. I see some costumes and hear a big score, I'm satisfied. This could have used a little more directorial flair (which slightly begs the question for why it was even here to begin with), but Vikander and Law make up for that with their fiery performances. (7/10)
Oscar Prognosis: It only had an outside chance to begin with, and the reviews have mostly sunken any sliver of hope.
Dune: Part Two, Killers of the Flower Moon, Oppenheimer, and
Barbie are likely to crowd the craft categories, making it extremely doubtful this gets in anywhere. Jude Law's performance is a standout, but there won't be any passion for the movie to take him anywhere. This really should have been a TIFF Gala premiere.
BLACK FLIES My Review: You might as well walk into this movie with a headache because you're going to get one five minutes in. You might as well not watch this movie if you're squeamish to blood and needles. You might as well not watch this movie if you want to watch interesting characters in an original story. You might as well not watch this movie. (5/10)
Oscar Prognosis: There really needs to be limit out in place for how much Sean Penn can be at Cannes, because his output these past few years has been putrid. No Oscar chances, nor will anyone probably see it.
ANATOMY OF A FALL My Review: Disappointing isn't the right word (since I still liked it), but there was something special missing that prevented me from loving it like everyone else. 150 minutes doesn't necessarily fly by, no matter how flawless Sandra Huller's performance is. Maybe
Saint Omer filled me up on French courtroom dramas and I'm still not ready for more? (7/10)
Oscar Prognosis: I didn't think Neon would get much out of
Triangle of Sadness last year, so I don't want to count them out again. This will likely be France's submission for Best International Feature, and possibly be their best chance to win the category after years of a disappointment. Similar to Jonathan Glazer, Sandra HĂźller's lead performance will be a critic's favorite. I'm doubtful about Best Picture and any of the other top categories, but I could see still see it happening if other big contenders start dropping off.
PERFECT DAYS My Review: The serenity of doing the mundane, and the bliss we could all achieve if we didn't overcomplicate everything we do. One of those movies that sounds terrible on paper, and yet is oh so beautiful. Watch this on a calm summer day with some tea. (7/10)
Oscar Prognosis: This a Japanese-German co-production, so either country could submit it. Wenders has never been nominated in the Best International Feature category (although that's mostly because it's been forever since he made a good narrative feature). With Neon also behind it, there's an outside shot of a nomination.
BANEL & ADAMA My Review: I've always had a blind spot for African films, so I felt compelled to let this be a mini-introduction. Plus, it's barely 80 minutes so it slotted easily into my schedule. It has a bold style about it, with some striking cinematography and music cues. A stronger narrative would have lifted it higher. A great debut, and I'd be happy to watch Sy's next film if it were to come back to the festival. (6/10)
Oscar Prognosis: It doesn't have a US distributor, nor do I think will get a US release in time for contention. It won't matter, as the reviews are tepid and the movie doesn't have the gravitas to stay noticed.
ASTEROID CITY My Review: By far the strangest film in his already strange filmography,
Asteroid City is Wes Anderson's attempt at a Christopher Nolan movie. It's got all the trappings you've come to love (or hate), with some really interesting methods to express its ideas. I'm already planning more than one rewatch once it opens in theaters! (8/10)
Oscar Prognosis: I'm a Wes Anderson apologist (
The French Dispatch still remains one of my all-time favorite movies after seeing it at Cannes 2021), so don't think my rave reaction will be uniformly applied. This movie is way weirder than you think it's going to be, which is evidenced by the divided critical reactions.
As with all Anderson projects, it's impeccably crafted. But with
The French Dispatch being blanked in a relatively weaker year, I'm not so sure this will crack any categories. Maybe Best Production Design, but there are so many other heavy hitters I'd predict first.
THE OLD OAK My Review: This was rumored for a prize, which would have absolutely pissed me off. Painfully flat and oversimplified, with way too much time spent speechifying instead of actually building characters. Basically boils down to "racism is bad" and ends without resolving the main plot and one of the subplots. (4/10)
Oscar Prognosis: Ken Loach is not an Oscar player, so don't expect anything.

FILMS I WASNâT ABLE TO SEE
*Iâm only going to talk about the films that I heard about from other people and might stand a chance of actually getting released in America for Oscar contention. You have to remember that about 1/3 of the films at Cannes never get released outside of their native country*
FALLEN LEAVES It won the Jury Prize and was acquired by Mubi, so there's some hope it gets into the Best International Feature category. Kaurismäki has been nominated before, and I expect this to pop up at the fall festivals.
LA CHIMERA The reviews from highbrow critics have been great, but there was a much more mixed reaction from the "regular" people I talked to. I expect Italy to submit it, and it has a decent chance of getting nominated.
THE POT AU FEU This was definitely the surprise of the festival. It premiered pretty late and it immediately became the talk of the town the day after. It still doesn't have US distribution, so I'm not sure what prospects it has. Honestly, the best case scenario is that it becomes a cult classic years later and inspires some food-themed screenings at indie cinemas.
These are my thoughts on what I experienced at Cannes this year. If you have any questions about the films, or anything about the festival in general, feel free to comment below or DM me.
