Dozens of officers get marching orders as part of 'Operation Safe Summer' in Minneapolis
The officers learned when and where they will focus their attention as the warm days and nights set in.
By Paul Walsh Star Tribune
June 7, 2023 — 4:23 Crime hot spots in Minneapolis will be saturated with law enforcement at specific times under an initiative detailed Wednesday ahead of the warm summer days and nights ahead.
The "Operation Safe Summer" briefing Wednesday in the Police Department training center, with many of the top legal brass acting for the most part as observers along with members of the media, was complete with charts, graphs and maps on a big screen touting reductions in crime. The contingent included Minneapolis police officers and Hennepin County sheriff's deputies, many of them in plain clothes.
The officers learned when they will saturate targeted areas of the city — in uniform and undercover — with the focus on crime hot spots on the North Side, downtown and along and near E. Lake Street.
The operation, subtitled the "Greater Minneapolis Violent Crime Initiative," began Monday and is being deployed on specific dates during specific times through the end of August — though they were not publicly detailed.
A presentation of Police Department crime data comparing the first six months of 2023 with the same period last year showed 33% fewer homicides and 37% fewer gunshot victims. At the same time, gun seizures are up 18%.
On the first day of the initiative, detectives with the Hennepin County Violent Offender Task Force and Minneapolis police officers
chased a 12-year-old boydriving a suspected stolen Kia until the vehicle crashed into and destroyed a Metro Transit bus shelter at Olson Hwy. and N. Penn Avenue.
The driver and his five older teenage passengers were injured to varying degrees. All six were arrested, the Sheriff's Office said.
The Kia struck another SUV on Olson Hwy. and Penn Avenue, then slammed into the bus shelter and also hit a man waiting at the shelter around noon, authorities said Monday. The vehicle was believed to have been involved in multiple armed robberies and being driven
erratically through the North Side. On Wednesday, the child, now 13, was charged with four counts of felony criminal vehicular operation and one count each of receiving stolen property and fleeing police. Because of his age, his identity and other details were not made public.
Along with Mayor Jacob Frey, other agency heads in attendance included U.S. Attorney Andrew Luger, Hennepin County Sheriff Dawanna Witt, state Bureau of Criminal Apprehension Superintendent Drew Evans, Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty and Alvin Winston, special agent in charge for the FBI's Minneapolis Field Office. They praised the efforts toward bringing down crime in the tumultuous years since the at-times violent and destructive unrest that followed George Floyd's murder by Minneapolis police officers in May 2020.
"We are focusing on the worst of the worst out there who are wreaking harm or causing havoc in the community," Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O'Hara said of the joint-agency initiative. "You are out there this week and every day and taking these people off the street."

Hello. I was arrested March 17 2023, sat in Tarrant County until finally posting bond Monday, and still have no court date or an indictment. How long does the Grand Jury have to serve me?
My charges both carry 5-99 (innocent and can’t prove otherwise), so I figured it would take a little while, but we’re coming in 3 months!
The DAs need refreshers on our Bill of Rights. Never should have moved here. Where I am from I would have gotten time served and probably probation.

2023.06.07 20:26 Irishish How do we prevent resources like Trevor Project's anonymous chatrooms from being used by adults to discuss sexually explicit content with minors?
EDIT: I've been sold a bill of goods.
The Epoch Times of all places reports that what concerns me has been investigated and debunked.
Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco told The Epoch Times on Oct. 18 the anti-human trafficking team investigated the complaint but found no criminal behavior in the TrevorSpace chatrooms. “The men and women that we have doing this are top of the line,” Bianco said. “They did their investigative work to get deeper into that space, and they found nothing.”
[...]
While Bianco understands parents are outraged, he said law enforcement agencies can’t base investigations or make arrests on moral grounds. “These parents, of course, they’re angry, and they should be angry,” he said, “but law enforcement has absolutely nothing to do with this other than looking into it to make sure there’s no criminal [activity]. There’s absolutely nothing criminal about that website or even having the chatrooms. This is no different than Facebook or Snapchat.”
It took getting into it
in the NRO comments before I found this, because the magazine—which while very biased is generally pretty open about its sources—did not give this context.

2023.06.07 18:54 rusticgorilla Georgia uses domestic terrorism law to suppress Cop City protests and community organization

Background: What is Cop City?
Cop city is a $90 million proposed training center for police officers. It would include a mock city, a helicopter pad, areas for explosives testing and high-speed vehicle chases, and new shooting ranges in 85 acres of the South River Forest (south of Atlanta, Georgia). Taxpayers will foot one-third of the bill, with the Atlanta Police Foundation funding the remaining $60 million.
The Atlanta Police Foundation, which is helping fund the project in an unincorporated part of DeKalb county, says on its website that it will have “the necessary facilities required to effectively train 21st-century law enforcement agencies responsible for public safety in a major urban city.”
Among the training features will be a burn tower for firefighters to practice extinguishing life-threatening blazes; areas for high-speed vehicle chases; a helicopter landing pad; a mock village including residential, school, nightlife and community areas, with structures such as a bank and a gas station; and a shooting range.
The project was approved by the city of Atlanta in September 2021 after 17 hours of public comment, 70% of which was against the training center.
Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms said...that she is aware of widespread opposition to the recently-approved $90 million public safety training facility to be built of forested land, and it is unfortunate that the city “didn’t have anything else to choose from” in terms of other potential sites to build the sprawling facility.
Shortly after the city vote in late 2021, forest defenders and activists barricaded the area and took residence among the trees to prevent the forest from being demolished. The movement is largely described as leaderless and autonomous, with participants citing varied motivations:
“It’s sort of this ungoverned amorphous group of folks,” said Roddy. “Nobody's the boss. It’s really empowering to see how much a group of folks can accomplish together and to know that you can participate however feels empowering and feels comfortable to you.”
The protests have attracted people against the further militarization of the police, the destruction of green space and pollution of the environment, and the continuance of colonial policies (South River Forest was once Muscogee Creek Native American land).
Oppression
Though protests have taken place since the city approved the construction of Cop City, state officials began severely cracking down on activists over the past year.
Tortuguita
Manuel Esteban Paez Terán, also known as Tortuguita, became the face of Cop City resistance after Georgia State Patrol troopers shot and killed the activist. Paez Terán was a 26-year-old Indigenous Venezuelan and member of the queer community who took part in several social justice movements.
In an interview from an encampment in the Atlanta forest last year, a protester identified only as Tortuguita—Spanish for “little turtle”—explained how nonviolence would pave the way for them to successfully stop “Cop City,” a proposed $90 million police training facility slated to be built across 85-acres of dense woodland.
“We get a lot of support from people who live here, and that’s important because we win through nonviolence,” Tortuguita, who used they/them pronouns, told journalist David Peisner for a feature published in Bitter Southerner in December and updated this week. “We’re not going to beat them at violence.”
On January 18, 2023, officers raided the South River Forest encampment. According to the official police account, Paez Terán ignored their commands to exit a tent and pulled a gun, firing first at officers. A bullet allegedly from a gun in Paez Terán’s possession struck an officer in the pelvic area. The troopers then opened fire on Paez Terán, killing them.
There is no body camera recording of the shooting. However, Atlanta Police Department officers with body cameras were nearby in the forest, capturing snippets of conversation that suggest the wounded cop may have been hit by friendly fire.
Approximately 18 minutes into the video, four gunshots can be heard off-camera and one officer mutters, “Oh shit,” to himself. The group of Atlanta police officers immediately stop in their tracks, then another 16 shots ring out before there’s a barrage of noise—making it hard to make out individual shots. After approximately 12 seconds of shooting an officer can be heard muttering to himself, “Is this target practice?” Another officer turns and says, “Those are real shots being fired.”
Roughly a minute and 40 seconds after the first shot, the group starts to move ahead after some sort of audible signal. The officers are warned multiple times about crossfire.
One officer whispers quietly, “They’re shooting at us.”
“Nah, that sounded like suppressed gunfire.”
“Yeah, it did.”
An announcement over the radio confirms an officer was injured. A few seconds later, the officer wearing the body camera can be heard saying, “Man, you fucked your own officer up.” [...]
In the last two minutes as officers are seemingly winding down from the operation a conversation can be overheard.
“Did they shoot their own man?”
To which an officer replies, “We don’t know what he got shot by…” and the rest of what he says is hard to decipher. An officer responds and says, “The first one, they said, was suppressed.”
Further calling into question the official version of events, the DeKalb County coroner did not find gunpowder residue on Paez Terán’s hands. An independent autopsy determined that Paez Téran had been shot 14 times "by different firearms" with their hands raised while sitting cross-legged on the ground—again, inconsistent with the firing of a gun, though the autopsy report states “it is impossible to determine” if they were holding a firearm or not.
Arrests
At least 35 people have been arrested for protesting Cop City in recent months, charged with a controversial domestic terrorism provision of Georgia law.
In 2017, the Georgia state legislature changed the legal definition of domestic terrorism (Title 16, Chapter 11, Article 6). Instead of only criminalizing acts that are intended to or reasonably likely to kill or injure at least 10 people, the new definition includes certain property crimes intended to “change” government policy through “intimidation or coercion.”
ACLU: The amendment added a stigmatizing label and a harsher punishment — up to 35 years in prison — to property crimes that were already illegal, simply because of accompanying political expression critical of government policy. At the time of the amendment’s passing, the ACLU of Georgia and other civil rights groups objected that the statute could be weaponized to suppress protected First Amendment activity…As states have increasingly passed “domestic terrorism” laws, the result is that a range of at times wholly innocent or constitutionally protected activity is penalized and stigmatized with a politically-charged label.
In December 2022, five protesters were arrested for allegedly throwing rocks at police cars while officers tried to clear the forest. All were charged with domestic terrorism, four with criminal trespassing, three with aggravated assault, and two with interference with government property.
Seven more protesters were arrested in January, during the same raid that resulted in the murder of Paez Téran. All were charged with domestic terrorism and criminal trespassing. Following the arrests, Gov. Brian Kemp (R) called the protesters “militant activists” and said “we will bring the full force of state and local law enforcement down on those trying to bring about a radical agenda through violent means.”
Then, in March, police stormed a music festival organized by “Stop Cop City” activists and arrested 35 people. According to officials, some of the protesters had earlier set fire to a bulldozer and police ATV a mile away at the South River Forest construction site. Of the 35 people arrested, 23 charged with domestic terrorism, including a designated legal observer for the National Lawyers Guild. The police based the arrests on the fact that some protesters had muddy shoes in a forest.
The probable cause stated in the warrants against the activists is extremely weak. Police cited arrestees having mud on their shoes — in a forest. The warrants alleged they had written a legal support phone number on their arms, as is common during mass protests. And, in a few cases, police alleged protesters were holding shields — hardly proof of illegal activity — which a number of defendants even deny…
“Roughly 1,500 people attended over the weekend; to dance, to commune, and to take a stand against Cop City,” organizers of the music festival, the Sonic Defense Committee, told me. “There is no excuse for the police violence that festival attendees were subjected to.”
In April, police arrested three activists in Cartersville, about 40 miles north of Atlanta, for distributing flyers calling attention to the police killing of Paez Terán. The three were charged with felony intimidation of an officer of the state and misdemeanor stalking for sharing flyers that included the names of six officers involved in the shooting—information that was already made public by a different organization.
According to their lawyer, Lyra Foster, the activists drove once through the neighborhood and placed flyers on numerous mailboxes without exiting their vehicle or approaching any residents…All three arrestees are being held at Bartow County Jail; all were denied bond by a magistrate judge on Monday. None of the defendants has a criminal history, nor is there any allegation of violence in the current charges. “Denying them bond was extreme, in my opinion,” Foster said.
Finally, last week Atlanta police officers and agents from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation arrested three people connected to the Atlanta Solidarity Fund, which has paid bail and provided legal support for Cop City protesters. Video of the raid showed at least a dozen officers in riot gear with assault rifles raiding a community organizing house in East Atlanta. The three people arrested — Marlon Kautz, 39; Savannah Patterson, 30; and Adele MacLean, 42 — were charged with the felony crimes of charity fraud and money laundering, under the state’s tenuous theory that supporting protesters accused of domestic terrorism is, itself, a crime.
Lauren Regan, executive director of the Civil Liberties Defense Center, called the arrests an "extreme provocation" in a statement.
"Bailing out protestors who exercise their constitutionally protected rights is simply not a crime," Regan said. "In fact, it is a historically grounded tradition in the very same social and political movements that the city of Atlanta prides itself on. Someone had to bail out civil rights activists in the 60's — I think we can all agree that community support isn't a crime."
Gov. Kemp called the organizers “criminals”:
“These criminals facilitated and encouraged domestic terrorism with no regard for others, watching as communities faced the destructive consequences of their actions.” the Republican said. “Here in Georgia, we do not allow that to happen.”
Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr, also a Republican, pledged to “not rest until we have held accountable every person who has funded, organized, or participated in this violence and intimidation.”
The latest
The Atlanta City Council voted 11-4 to approve legislation to fund Cop City in the early morning hours of Tuesday, June 6. More than 1,000 people signed up to speak during the 15-hour long session, which can be watched here. Many more community members were allegedly prevented from speaking after the city council cut off public comment signup.

2023.06.07 18:50 Justwonderinif Post Conviction II
< Friday, May 28, 2010 - Adnan could have filed for post conviction relief at any time during these past seven years, and did not have to wait ten years. Rabia lied about that.
- According to Rabia, Justin Brown has decided not to subpoena Asia, given her reaction when approached by the PI.
- Attoney Justin Brown files for Post Conviction Relief citing "Ineffective Assistance of Counsel" aka "IAC." This filing contains the first appearance of Asia's letters in the record.
- Syed asks for new trial, claiming trial counsel (Gutierrez), and appellate counsel (Warren Brown) were ineffective:
- 1) Gutierrez failed to establish a timeline disproving State's case
- 2) Gutierrez failed to investigate alibi witness (Asia)
- 3) Gutierrez failed to move for new trial based on Asia's statements
- 4) Gutierrez failed to cross-examine Debbie
- 5) Gutierrez failed to pursue a plea offer
- 6) Gutierrez failed to request a change of venue
- 7) Gutierrez failed to investigate Jay
- 8) In Adnan's appeal brief, Warren Brown failed to include the fact that Waranowitz strayed from his area of expertise, at trial.
- 9) Cumulative Ineffective Assistance of counsel.
- [Four years later, on October 18, and November 18, 2014, Rabia lied to the readers of her blog, writing that Adnan was forced to wait ten years to file for post conviction relief. The truth is the defendant has ten years from the date of conviction to file, but cannot file AFTER 10 years. In her book, Rabia wrote that she and Adnan knew all along that Adnan could file for post conviction relief the day after his appeal was denied in 2003]
- [Rabia also lies about how a 2013 google search led her to Sarah Koenig's coverage of Gutierrez' disbarment. Adnan's May 2010 filing for post conviction relief discusses Sarah Koenig's reporting. This is how Rabia would have become aware of Koenig.]
Sunday, June 27, 2010 - Adnan has been at Cumberland / Supermax for one year.
June 27, 2010 - Justin Brown files a Supplement to Adnan's May 28, 2010 Petition for Post Conviction Relief. Cites a 10th point for PCR.
- 10) Sentencing counsel, Charles Dorsey, failed to request that the motion for sentence modification be held in abeyance.
After Syed fired Gutierrez, he was represented by a public defender, Charles Dorsey. Mr. Dorsey filed a Motion for Modification of Sentence. Mr. Syed had just received a sentence of life plus 30 years. Rather than ask the Court to hold that motion in advance and raise it after, up to ten years, which is the common practice when a defendant receives a very long sentence, Mr. Dorsey didn't do that. The court ended up ruling on the Motion for Modification a couple of days after it was filed. And, of course, the motion was denied. So that's our third, ineffective assistance of counsel claim. That he should have handled that differently. - The supplement also included further points Justin Brown wanted to make about Gutierrez's failure to ask for a pleas deal.
No copies of this supplement exist on the internet. July 27, 2010 Summer 2010 - According to transcripts, Justin Brown attempts to subpoena Asia. (This could be the reason for one of the postponements.)

Saturday, May 21, 2011 June, 2011 Thursday, June 9, 2011 Monday, August 8, 2011 - PCR Hearing scheduled, but postponed. Second postponement.
Thursday, September 29, 2011 - Adnan moves to disqualify Kathleen Murphy as counsel for the state.
Saturday, October 15, 2011 - Hae Min Lee 31st birthday
Thursday, October 20, 2011 - PCR Hearing scheduled, but postponed. Third postponement.
November 27, 2011 January, 2012 - Rabia founds the "Safe Nation Collaborative." Unfortunately, law enforcement has never heard of it.
Monday, February 6, 2012 - PCR Hearing scheduled, but postponed. Fourth postponement.
- Adnan's motion to disqualify Kathleen Murphy is denied.
- Murphy says she first spoke to Urick about testifying at the PCR in February 2012
Tuesday, March 6, 2012 - PCR Hearing scheduled, but postponed. Fifth postponement.
February 28, 2012 - Adnan has been in jail/prison for thirteen years.

Thursday, August 9, 2012 - PCR Hearing scheduled, but postponed. Seventh postponement.
Thursday, October 11, 2012 - Transcripts: for Evidentiary Hearing in Post-Conviction Appeal.
- (Shamim's and Rabia's testimony filed and paid for by stop_saying_right after Rabia refused to upload anything but Urick's testimony.)
- Justin Brown opens. He will focus on (3) issues.
- Gutierrez's failure to investigate Asia.
- Gutierrez's failure to pursue a plea offer.
- Dorsey's failure to request that the motion for sentence modification be held in abeyance.
- Kevin Urick testifies:
- Gutierrez never approached him seeking a plea bargain. If he had been approached, there would have been a possibility of a negotiated disposition.
- Asia called him because she was afraid of being forced to testify. She had already made up her mind not to testify when she called Urick. And only called him looking for a way to get out of it.
- Shamim Rahman testifies: Posted and discussed on reddit thanks to SSR.
- Rabia Chaudry testifies: Posted and discussed on reddit thanks to SSR.
Monday, October 15, 2012 - Hae Min Lee 32nd birthday
Thursday, October 25, 2012 - Transcripts: for Evidentiary Hearing in Post-Conviction Appeal.
- (Adnan and Meady's testimony filed and paid for by stop_saying_right after Rabia refused to upload anything but Urick's testimony.)
- Adnan Syed testifies. Posted and discussed on reddit thanks for SSR.
- Adnan testifies that he told Dorsey about Asia, but there is no mention of Asia's letters, or giving Dorsey Asia's letters.
- Margaret Meady testifies
- Justin Brown fails to call Andrew Davis, the Private Investigator hired by Flohr and Colbert to investigate the library/track alibi.
February 28, 2013 - Adnan has been in jail/prison for fourteen years.
Tuesday, May 21, 2013 June 11, 2013 August, 2013 - It has been ten months since the October 2012 Hearing for Post Conviction Relief.
- Rabia says she watched the documentary "West of Memphis," looked up reporters who covered Gutierrez's disbarment, and found Sarah Koenig. Rabia hoped that media attention could influence Welch's pending decision, ten months after the hearing.
- Rabia is lying when she talks about this 2013 google search that led her to Sarah Koenig's coverage of Gutierrez' disbarment for the Baltimore Sun. The truth is that Adnan's May 2010 filing for post conviction relief discusses Sarah Koenig and the coverage in the Baltimore Sun. This is how Rabia would have become aware of Koneig. Not via an August 2013 random google search, after watching West of Memphis.
August 12, 2013 - Rabia sends a letter to Sarah Koenig, asking her to take a look at the case. Rabia claims the police and prosecutors knew Adnan was innocent, and Gutierrez threw the case for money. Note here that leading up to Serial, Rabia was convinced that Jay did it, and would have pitched the story, with the carrot of exposing Jay.
August 29, 2013 - Rabia hastily sets up an LLC in Maryland, even though she is not licensed to practice law there.
- In anticipation of meeting with Sarah Koenig, Rabia sets up an office at Security Plaza, across the street from Woodlawn High School.
- Rabia wants Sarah to think this has always been her office, and that this is where she works. The truth is Rabia lives and works in DC.
August 30, 2013 Late September, 2013 - Adnan receives a letter from Justin Brown saying that a reporter named Sarah Koenig wanted to do an interview. Justin wrote that he didn't think Sarah would waste time on a story if she didn't believe Adnan was innocent. Adnan receives the first letter from Sarah Koenig, a few days later.
Thursday, October 10, 2013 - By now, Adnan has received an introductory letter from Sarah Koenig. She sent him a pad and pencil and stamps. Adnan writes Sarah Koenig a letter about his story and case. Discussion. - [will update link soon]
- Adnan says he wasn't much bigger than Hae.
- Adnan says that students weren't allowed to use the top parking lot. (several WHSers and Krista have said that students used the top parking lot.)
- Adnan describes the route to the Best Buy but neglects to mention the back way.
- Adnan implies that the October 31 break up was the final break up.
- Adnan says that he and Hae would joke about two women calling him on his cell phone at the same time. (Only we know that Adnan's first, ever cell phone was activated the evening of January 12, and there are no calls on the call log that support this story.)
Tuesday, October 15, 2013 - Hae Min Lee 33rd birthday
November, 2013 - Sarah Koenig meets with Chris Flohr to try to get some sense of Adnan's innocence. She tells Flohr that she won't do the story unless Adnan is innocent. Jay as the killer is context for Koenig's work on Serial.
Wednesday, November 13, 2013 Tuesday, November 19, 2013 - Adnan receives a reply letter from Sarah Koenig and puts her on his visitor list. Sarah has decided to report on the story.
Monday, November 25, 2013 - Adnan writes Sarah Koenig to thank her for her letter and let her know she is on his visitor list.
Monday, December 30, 2013 - Post Conviction Decision written by Justice Martin P. Welch.
January 2, 2014 - Andrew Davis in a single car accident, that proves fatal.
Tuesday, January 6, 2014 Mid January, 2014 - Koenig says that her first conversation with Adnan took place right after he received Welch's decision. Link to excerpt from first recorded interview
- Asia returns Sarah Koenig's call. Asia tells Sarah that when she was approached by the Defense PI, she "freaked out" and called Urick, who told her Adnan was guilty, so she dodged the attempt to produce her at the PCR.
- Bilal is notified of disciplinary action regarding his dental license, citing un-necessary treatments and overcharging on multiple occasions in 2010, 2011, 2012, and 2013.
Monday, January 27, 2014 - Defense files ALA (Applicaton for Leave to Appeal). Adnan's attorneys have to ask for permission to appeal Welch's decision, as there is no guaranteed right to appeal. Defense requests review of two issues:
- 1) Whether Gutierrez was ineffective because she didn't contact/interview Asia
- 2) Whether Gutierrez was ineffective for failing to pursue a plea deal, and telling Adnan she had.
Monday, February 17, 2014 Late February, 2014 - Sarah has met with Deirdre Enright who has agreed to work on Adnan's case.
- Two UVA law school clinics begin work on Adnan's case.
- Rabia says that Sarah reached out to Dierdre on her own. But it's clear that Adnan told Sarah about the Justin Wolfe case and subsequently, Deirdre Enright.
- DNA issue important to law student, Mario
February 28, 2014 - Adnan has been in jail/prison for fifteen years.
Late February/March 2014 - Justin George of the Baltimore Sun begins helping Sarah Koenig, at Rabia's urging. Rabia wanted a local reporter on the story, too.
Spring, 2014 - Approximate: Sarah emails Young Lee
- Approximate: Sarah interviews one of the prosecuting attorneys, Kathleen Murphy, for two hours
- Sarah and Dana Chivas visit Woodlawn, and surrounding areas:
- Krista shows them her scrapbook, lets them read Adnan's letters, and see her photos of Hae.
- Sarah and Dana Chivas do the drive test that Adnan asked Sarah to do. Rabia asks to go along. Sarah says no.
- Sarah shows Rabia the Enehey Report from the MPIA file. Rabia had never seen it. Sarah has redacted the name of the author of the report. She has promised the author she wouldn't reveal her name. Later, Rabia would post the report on her blog, and tell the world the name of the woman who wrote the report.
- Rabia says in her book that this report explained why the detectives focused in on Adnan. She leaves out that the report was not written until Adnan had been in jail for six months.
- Rabia dates the report as August 24, 1999, without mentioning that by then, Adnan had been arrested, indicted, and awaiting trial for months. (Later, Rabia would say that Justin Brown had a copy of the report in the police file, but never showed it to her.
- Adnan sends Sarah Koenig two "Price of Tea" charts, and asks her to hold them until the next time they speak. In October, of 2014, Koenig wrote about the subsequent conversation here.
Wednesday, May 21, 2014 May 31, 2014 June 4, 2014 July 25, 2014 Thursday, August 7, 2014 - Sarah and Julie fly to California, two weeks after the original air date for the podcast. Jay wouldn't talk to them on the phone, so they delayed the podcast, and flew to California to blind-side Jay.
Friday, August 8, 2014 - Sarah and Julie arrive at Jay's house. No one is home. They go away, then come back, for the second time, to walk across his lawn, unannounced.
- Jay said this upset his children.

2023.06.07 18:31 liftlovelive Jail scam call
So yesterday I got a phone call from a male claiming to be from the Fresno County jail and they told me they had John Doe in custody. John Doe is my step FILs son. I have never even met this guy, only heard from my MIL about his narcotic addiction and troubles with the law. The thing is, there is just no way this guy would have my phone number, let alone ask them to call me as a contact. So when they told me they had him in custody I said “great that’s probably where he belongs” and hung up. I texted my husband who is currently overseas and he said that he got a similar call.
My husband reached out to his mom and she confirmed that John Doe is in fact in jail and had been arrested earlier that day (which is public record, I found the booking information online). So I think scammers must follow the new bookings and immediately look up the person on one of those people search sites and then call all of their relatives and “possible associates” to attempt to collect money for their release. My husband and I had our info removed from the truepeoplesearch site years ago but I’m sure there are 100 other sites just like it that I’m unaware of. Husband and I warned my MIL about this possible scam and told her and FIL to not send any money or give any information to anyone who calls. We told her to call the jail directly for info and they wouldn’t ask for money in the first place.
Anyway, is there any other possible explanation? I’m 99.99% sure this was a scam call but do you think that’s how this scam works/how they got my info?

Woman arrested in fatal shooting of her neighbor in Florida (nbcnews.com) America has come to this, and it saddens me. This happened over the neighbor's kids playing in an empty lot next door to her. She shot and killed the neighbor lady through her steel front door. Thank goodness it seems the authorities have decided that the 'Stand Your Ground" laws in Florida probably do not justify this shooting. Would she have shot her if she was white? I have to wonder. America has become so violent it sickens me. submitted by

2023.06.07 10:05 SAMiAM4490 Manic bipolar brother with a gambling addiction is reeking havoc. Broke into house, stole checks, threatened family. Cops and bank won't take action.
My boyfriend's (33) brother (35) has been reeking havoc for the past few months. We are at a loss as to how to tackle the issue legally to get his family peace and his brother help. The initial incident occurred in 2020 when he was placed on a 5150 hold after taking too many psychedelics. He was diagnosed with Bipolar II while in treatment. He was taking his Antipsychotic meds until a few months ago. Since then he has quit his job, started gambling again, goes days without sleeping, runs around partying and doing drugs, has threatened family and friends, stolen tens of thousands of dollars, broken into houses and damaged property. We have offered to get him help in various ways but he is adament that he does not want anyone "controlling him."
The family consists of Mom (67), Dad (81), and the brothers: Tim (33), Sam (35), and Ron (37).
Sam has a gambling addiction and has lost hundreds of thousands of dollars in the past 3 years. Last year Sam came to the family asking for assistance to pay off an $80k debt. Tim agreed to wire Sam the money if Sam signed the title of his house over to a trust controlled by Mom and Dad. Sam agreed. Right now the mortgage is in Tim and Sam's name. Sam has not made a mortgage payments in years. The payments have been made by Tim and their parents. There is a lease agreement for the house between Mom and Tim.
Last week Sam came to the house where Mom, Dad, and Ron live. He broke items around the house, attacked Mom, stole money orders made out to Dad's business, along with some blank checks. Sam wrote himself a $22k check, signed Dad's name, and cashed it. Dad is the primary on the account and Ron is the signatory. Ron called US Bank to report the forged check. US Bank said they needed the primary (Dad) to submit a police report before they could do anything. Dad is in his 80s and does not want to get involved. Is there a way for us to handle this on behalf of Dad?
Today Sam came to the house Tim lives and broke the front door to gain entry. Tim called the cops but they did not arrest or take a report. Tim, Ron, and Mom all begged the cops to remove Sam and that they felt unsafe. The officer told them to work it out as a family and that it is a civil suit. The officer did recommend a restrainer order which Mom and Tim are planning on requesting tomorrow. Sam is currently in the house that he is not longer on the title of nor has lease for and Tim is staying with me.
There are numerous other instances of Sam threatening harm and stealing from family and friends. These are just the most recent highlights. There are close to 10 people, including myself, who are ready to make a statement/file a police report. Sam's harassment and desperation for money are escalating and we feel like the support from law enforcement is dwindling. The entire family has been living in fear for years but I'm most concerned for Mom and Dad, who are both elderly.
Mom and Tim are going to the police station tomorrow to file a request for a restraining order. Is there a better option to get Sam out of the house and/or to leave the family alone? Have there been any crimes committed or is this all civil? Is there any action we can take in regards to the forged check on behalf of the primary account holder?
We are in Orange County, California. I can provide more information, if needed.

2023.06.07 08:12 Trick_Wonder_4576 41 Is no fun
I rarely post, but recently I've been reading some posts where people offer uplifting responses to strangers. It has been a source of comfort for me lately. At the moment, I feel overwhelmed and defeated, with a deep sense of loneliness. I want to express my emotions intelligently, as I am experiencing profound emotional wounds and a lack of direction in my life. This description reflects my current state.
The aspects that define me at this moment are a combination of permanent, temporary, cyclical, and circumstantial factors. I find myself in the deepest depression I have ever experienced in my 41 years of life. Considering my current circumstances and the metrics used to measure success, I feel like a complete failure. If one were to analyze my job history and performance, there were moments of incredible opportunities followed by brief success, only to be followed by utter failure. Similarly, if we were to evaluate my personal life in terms of social interactions, dating/marriage, friendships, and health, I would be considered among the lowest performers. It seems like my entire life has been marked by failure.
Furthermore, it seems as though the universe has singled me out for some special kind of punishment. For years, I have felt a sense of surrealism, where every decision or action I take inevitably leads to unfavorable outcomes. Every significant matter in my life has ended in prolonged consequences, worsened circumstances, or some form of material loss. I have missed out on numerous opportunities, chances for marriage and having children have slipped away, I am financially struggling, and I have very few friends apart from one in my former hometown of Chicago and another in Alaska. My spirituality and faith have also been deeply affected by the setbacks and obstacles I have faced, and I am dealing with all of this without the support of my estranged family.
My three best friends, my sisters, and I have not spoken in six years. I can't recall the last time I spoke with my brother, as he doesn't respond to my emails or texts. My mother is suffering from rapid-onset dementia, while my father has recently retired from a lifelong career as a doctor. Throughout my life, my family has systematically scapegoated me, starting with being labeled the black sheep. However, everything changed when I disclosed at the age of 27 that my brother had sexually and physically abused me as a child. Since then, life has been a constant battle against me. The universe seemed to shift its axis, and my life has never been the same. It is particularly disconcerting that my brother, a urologist by profession, is the perpetrator of such heinous acts.
My sisters, as research suggests, took sides between the "black sheep/fuckup/substance user" and the successful urologist. They accused me of lying, changing my story, waiting too long, claiming it was nothing, and even being jealous of my brother's life, which includes a mansion, a Porsche, wealth, and respect. Since I have accomplished nothing, they believe I fabricated drunken tales of childhood and only decided to reveal this ultra-specific story at the age of 27. I never imagined that I would lose my family in this way. It feels like I have lost my identity, purpose, support system, best friends, and confidants – my sisters. They have subjected me to the silent treatment, which my brother also employs, treating me as if I don't exist. My sister's last text message summed it up when she said that they don't get together to talk about me anymore because I don't come up in their conversations. It was the same sister who initially encouraged me to reveal the truth about the abuse but then betrayed me and twisted the narrative.
In my family, my case of sexual abuse was not an isolated incident. My father, a physician and at the time a pediatrician in Illinois, had a second case of sexual abuse and incest in his side of the family. His younger brother, the second oldest among seven siblings, also abused his own daughter, my cousin. He is also Dr. A few years before I disclosed my own abuse as an adult, my cousin trusted my father enough to disclose her abuse to him. Despite my father not knowing about my case at the time, he took no professional action to report the abuse committed by another doctor, his brother, who abused his now niece, and did nothing.During that same disclosure, my cousin admitted that her two brothers, who are also my cousins, had abused her as well. This meant that five members of her household, three of whom were abusing one child, were involved in these traumatic events. My father, along with his brother and siblings, did nothing legally to report these incidents. My uncle, the abuser, is now the president of a hospital in East Texas. So technically, my case was the fourth, following my uncle, cousin, and another cousin. One of those cousins is now a pastor of a small church community, while the other works for a former presidential candidate's company. As for me, I have been trapped in a cycle of failure to launch as an adult, mental health issues, and intermittent substance abuse problems for the past 20 years. And that's not even the end of it – the fifth case involves my cousin, who was arrested in a state capital where he worked as a therapist or counselor. He was arrested for filming his young neighbor through her window. I am aware of his arrest but do not have any information regarding the progress of his case or its resolution.
To put it all together, it is an intricate mess of narcissism, ego, power, control, and childhood trauma. I strongly believe I have developed complex post-traumatic stress disorder (C-PTSD) as a result of these experiences. In fact, I am certain that I have.
Fast-forward to the present, and I am writing this from a motel room, where there are too many details to recount from the past six months since my return from Montana. In a way, I followed the path of my other abused cousin – I left. However, I ultimately failed and had to return to a city near my parents, a city I despise. To add to my troubles, I was falsely accused of felony domestic violence soon after my return, further fueling my sense of failure and shame. My parents, upon hearing about the incident, made it clear that they wanted little to do with me. Speaking of Montana, my experiences and the year I spent there were truly nightmarish, to say the least. But that's a story for another time.
During the car ride to a hospital in a small town in the same county, my father and I had an opportunity for a discussion about the abuse. I wanted to understand why he did nothing in all five cases, why the eldest child seems to be targeted (true for my brother and cousin), why successful doctors are involved – including a pastor, a consultant, and now a urologist after the fact. Did he not notice the intergenerational pattern and his own parental negligence as a physician and a parent of adult children? I questioned why he took no action, why his behavior changed so drastically in the past three years, why he lied about his knowledge of nondisclosure agreements (NDAs) when he had used them for possible infidelity and had lied about private settlements. He even harassed me using the police, assassinated my character in our small town, and now charged me with striking him, resulting in false statements and allegations. As a consequence, my reputation has been tarnished while my father's remains pristine. We currently reside in a town where he practiced medicine, and the consequences for me are severe. Deep in my heart, I know that his post-arrest behavior towards me has been consistently inconsistent. He evades questioning, avoids contact and visits, and shows no signs of wanting a relationship. Instead, he guilt-trips me, shifts blame, engages in word salad and gaslighting, and pathologically lies.
As I sit here now, I wonder: What can one do in such a dire situation? There seem to be no options, no answers, no safety nets of money or emotional support, no motivation, and no joy – only the looming threat of a potentially harsh sentence. Even worse, my father has attempted to record my phone calls and offered me money not to hire a proper defense attorney or pursue litigation, just a week before I was supposed to accept a four-year adjudication plea as an innocent party. Then, when I decided to plead my innocence at the last minute during the trial, he abandoned me once again, signaling to me that money is somehow tainted. Regardless, it's gone now.
I apologize for unloading all of this on Reddit, and I understand that it may be quite depressing for others to read. However, I feel that I have reached the end of my fight, not against just one issue, but against a conglomerate of issues that have stolen my life and time, offering me nothing in return. I desperately need legal advice, emotional support, prayers, or any form of assistance. I find myself lost in a maze of confusion, where every turn I make is a miscalculation, distorted by backward perspectives and reflections off other elements. Over the past six weeks since leaving my job due to a problematic relationship with the owner, I have been living a transient and isolated existence in the dark corners of this wretched city. It feels as though I have been exiled from my own life. I don't know what to do or who to turn to. I want to assure you that I'm not dramatizing this situation; I'm simply sharing my experience because I have no one else to talk to. I have been completely alone and isolated since losing my job.

2023.06.07 08:10 Trick_Wonder_4576 41: In Deep Shit
2023.06.07 06:38 Embarrassed_Rate_481 Battery on Leo, didn’t do it, but police report says so
Hey, I’m out on bond reading books and browsing trying to find out what to do.
What happened briefly: An officer arrested me for trespassing even though I was trying to get bank statements and leave. Im at the bank at like 4:59, this lady has called the cops but there’s fraud, so they finally get my statements, I head to leave and still get arrested. Cops let me go and give me back my belongings but don’t give me police report & don’t give me my statements of which i went the whole process to get. They say they don’t have them, I ask for the police officer supervisor comes back and says “oh so you won’t leave ?” And I’m like no I just called you over here, to ask if you could retrieve papers. Arrested. Cops drives me to county jail in a garage, (unbeknownst to me) he tells me “I’m free to go” while I’m in the back of the police suv handcuffed, then I ask for the hand cuffs to be removed and the police report (if im free to go). He puts on gloves and drags me out of the vehicle where I’m striped of my clothes, put on a leg handcuff and beat until I bled on the floor. The officers tase me, and won’t let me give myself up. I turnover and put my hands up but they still beat on me. They then tried to pick me up and put me in a wheelchair. In my haze of being beaten & being scared to be taken somewhere with no camera, (I didnt know I was in a jail), I dropped my weight to the ground and tried to get them to just stand me up. I truly was scared for my life, they continued to beat me and then while protecting my face. With all these officers on top of me, An officer punches me then claims I bit. A nurse came by, asked if I could get up and I said not with all these people on top of me. They got up and I went to the hospital. Chargers of 1st degree assault on officer dropped down to battery on Leo.
My question is, I have mental health history, but im truly not guilty but am afraid the tussle of the wheelchair thing and the statement on the police report basically saying another corrections officer “saw” me bite him is worrisome that I will be set up. The officers went to the hospital with “bite lacerations”. This is totally bogus and there will be no video evidence of me biting an officer. I’m a first time offender. I have a public defender but I’m wondering how “as law” when you get to court is a police report or an officer lying and saying I bit them?
Is it true, they would need saliva or can I request for samples of something? When an officer body cam isn’t red, does that mean it’s not recording audio? Can I submit my phone video recording of the trespassing for trail? If I allow myself to testify/be testified, can prosecutors pull up my mental health history, or is allowed to search out court orders or my records? Even though nothing was wrong with me, officers were just having a bad day, I annoyed them by filming our interaction and tirelessly trying to get my statements.

2023.06.07 05:56 badgecam514 Story about a local murder in Central Ohio
Hey, I have a story suggestion that I think falls under the dark section of "strange, dark and mysterious." It's a story about a murder that occurred just a few miles from where I live. My police academy commander was the lead detective on the case and told us about it.
In October of 2007 in Marengo Ohio, Luke Adkins was dating Anjelika Owens. Luke was 18 and Anjelika was 16. The two of them were dating and they were very hot and heavy for each other. Luke was a local trouble maker and indulged in marijuana regularly. Both Anjelika and Luke were massive fans of the band "Insane Clown Posse".
They were heavily influenced by their music which has a very violent and dark theme to them. Anjelika's mother, Kimberly Russel, knew about Luke's reputation and he was having a very negative influence on Anjelika. She didn't like that Luke and Anjelika were dating and ultimately forced Anjelika to break things off with Luke.
Secretly, however, Luke and Anjelika were still seeing each other. Anjelika would sneak Luke into the house at night and they would smoke marijuana, drink alcohol and have sexual intercourse.
Anjelika didn't like that her and Luke had to keep their relationship a secret. She wanted to be with Luke forever and the only obstacle from keeping that from happening was her mother, Kimberly.
Anjelika spoke with Luke about this and began talking about how she wanted to kill her mother. Luke was reluctant and told Anjelika repeatedly that he did not want to kill Kimberly. He tried to tell her that they could continue their secret relationship until Anjelika was 18 and then Kimberly couldn't do anything about it. But Anjelika insisted. Ultimately, Luke relented and gave in.
Luke obtained his hunting knife and went into Kimberly's room while she was sleeping. Originally, he actually left the room and went back to Anjelika and told her again that he didn't want to kill Kimberly, at which point Anjelika began calling Luke names and told him that if he wanted to be with her, he needed to kill her mother.
Luke went back into the bedroom and began brutally stabbing Kimberly over and over again. Kimberly awoke when Luke began stabbing her and fought back. The two of them fell off of the bed and onto the floor of the bedroom. Kimberly tried to get up and escape, but Luke used his non dominate arm to pin her down and continued to stab her in her face and in her neck.
While he pinned her to the floor, he was accidentally slicing his own arm that he was pinning Kimberly to the floor with. Eventually, Kimberly stopped struggling and laid still on the floor. Luke, thinking that Kimberly was dead, put the knife back in his pocket, went back to Anjelika and told her that Kimberly was dead.
Anjelika then went into the bedroom where Kimberly was attacked. When she looked down at her mother, thinking she was dead, Kimberly began to speak and asked Anjelika why this happened. Anjelika, seeing her mother bleeding and dying on the floor, suddenly had a change of heart and began to panic.
Anjelika went back into the living room of the home and dialed 911. She told police that her mother had been stabbed by Luke. Luke, overhearing this conversation, fled from the home on foot.
The Morrow County Sheriff's, assisted by the Ohio State Highway Patrol, responded to the house but when they arrived, Kimberly had died.
Luke had heard the sound of the sirens approaching the area and actually dove into a ditch to hide as the cruisers passed. When the coast was clear, he walked back to his car that was stashed in a nearby church parking lot and he fled to his friends house.
Once police were on scene and spoke to Anjelika, Anjelika told police that Luke would likely be hiding out in a barn at his friend's house. State troopers went to this house and found Luke's vehicle parked in the driveway. They found Luke inside, high on marijuana and pills, still covered in Kimberly's blood and the hunting knife sitting bloody on a workbench. Luke was arrested and taken to the Sheriff's Office for questioning.
Luke told the detective that the whole ordeal had actually been Anjelika's idea. Detectives detained Anjelika and began digging into her story and began poking holes in it. Ultimately, Anjelika confessed to putting Luke up to murdering Kimberly.
While searching the house where Kimberly was murdered, they located dozens of notes that had been exchanged back and forth between Luke and Anjelika. The notes described how they wanted to go on a murder spree until they killed the entire world. And when everyone on earth was dead, they were going to kill each other while having sexual intercourse.
Luke was sentenced to life without parole and Anjelika served 15 years and is currently out on parole.
