Peppermint Pork
2023.06.07 23:25 WhadayaBuyinStranger Peppermint Pork
Brian was sitting in his armchair watching conspiracy theory videos sprinkled with ones about the paranormal, as he does most nights for several hours, when he was overcome by a sudden primal hunger near impossible to ignore. His stomach felt like it was imploding. He shoved the feeling down deeper and kept watching. This time, it was an interview with very contrarian physicist and philosophy enthusiast.
"What if I told you the universe isn't real? In what is called a bio-centrist view, consciousness is all that exists, and everything around us is just like a user-interface that our brains make and give our senses. If a tree falls in the forrest and nobody is around to hear it, not only does it not make a sound, but it doesn't even exist until a conscious observer walks past it."
"Ok, um, is any of this provable? This all sounds a little woo-woo for me," his guest replied.
"It is. In fact, the famous double-slit experiment we discussed with our last guest definitively proved that the universe isn't defined until a conscious observer witnesses it. Reductionists used to argue consciousness is an illusion, but ironically, we now know there is consciousness but we do not know there is anything else. So, one could say the outside world is an illusion. What we believe to be patterns that reliably predict how the universe should work all fall apart on the quantum level. My very efficient machine of a brain constructs a framework for understanding what's around me, but I only see what fits into that framework. If you give someone with bipolar disorder an optical illusion, they will not be deceived by the illusion because their brain works differently, and the illusion was built for you and I. All of what us neurotypical people see is a shared illusion because we have similar constructs for interpretting the world. The real universe could be far more bizarre than we give it credit for."
The video ended, and with a deep breath, he pried himself from his armchair and stumbled into the kitchen. In his freezer were the remains of a pulled pork sandwich. Fighting his most basic carnal desires, he stared at it sitting in the freezer as cool refreshing fog surrounded it and gave an almost other-worldly ambiance to this heavenly meat.
In an instant, this 145lb 6'2" man's resolve shattered. He grabbed a plate, threw the entire sandwich in the microwave, and in only 90 seconds there was nothing standing between him and satiety. He sat at the table with a fork and knife, prepared to take small bites and savor each moment when just as suddenly as the urge to feed overcame him, a stronger urge not to compelled him to get up from the table and prepare for bed, putting the entire event to rest. He didn't put it back in the freezer but left it out, figuring the rotting smell would ruin his taste for the meat.
The next two days, he tried to eat various foods such as dried fruits, protein bars, vegetables, and small servings of oatmeal. He could barely get any of it down. All the while, this rotting meat was sitting on his kitchen table during a particularly hot week of summer, attracting flies.
Brian worked from home, but the quality of his work had been suffering lately. Barely having the energy to work, he sat at his computer and tried to focus on the task at hand when he heard a wet plop. He looked behind him and saw the dinner plate face down on the floor with his sandwich from several nights ago underneath. He slowly got up and attempted to clean up the mess when one of the most incredible events in mankind's history happened to this frail man in a crumbling old Kansas City apartment. His food spoke to him.
"Freeze me," it said.
"But you're a sandwich. Sandwiches don't talk."
"Brian, listen closely. I am God, and I can take many forms. Who are you to question me? If I wish to take this form and ask you to help me preserve it, you shall do as I ask."
"Alright," sighed Brian. He put the sandwich in the freezer. Then, he watched an episode of King of Queens and went to bed.
The next morning, he opened the freezer to check on his new friend, but it just sat there lifeless.
A couple weeks went by with nothing. Brian resumed his work and watched his videos. Everything became fairly routine again until he again felt what he called "an unholy cramping" in his stomach. He got up from the chair and managed to fight the temptation to disobey the sandwich for a few more minutes. He knew he couldn't hold it off forever. Again, he resisted the urge to feed, and again he left it out for several days only to be shocked that his sandwich spoke to him. It felt like it was happening for the first time. Even though the last time it happened was less than a month ago, it was barely a vague memory. Brian once again followed the orders of the sandwich and refroze it.
This cycle would soon be broken though. A few months later, a new family moved in next door and caught him in the hallway as he went to get his mail.
"Oh hi! I'm Susan. We just moved into 2C."
"Brian, I'm in 2D."
"Oh, so we're neighbors then!!!" she exclaimed and rushed in for a hug. "We just moved here from Sydney and are absolutely love this city's zoo! There is so much to do in this town. What are some good restaurants you'd recommend?"
"Oh, I don't eat out. I make my own food."
"Smart. I bet that's how you stay so fit. Listen, my husband Kyle and I would love to invite you over to our new place for a homecooked meal," Susan said with a warm motherly tone.
"Ok, can I bring my own food?"
"S- sure. Is 7pm tonight good?"
"Yeah, see you then" Brian said hurriedly as he darted back to his apartment, trying to give the vibe he was too busy to chat.
He stared blankly at his kitchen cabinets with a mounting sense of pressure. He would NOT eat whatever she prepares. He can't comtrol the calories, the macronutrients, the portions, any of it, and he knew if he were to arrive empty-handed, he'll have to eat whatever they prepare. He couldn't find anything hearty enough to look like a meal though. All he had in his cabinets were nuts, vegetables, and some protein bars. He knew there was only one food in his home that fit the bill. It will look like a normal dish, and then he can pretend he isn't feeling so he won't need to eat it. Such an excuse would be insulting if he doesn't eat their food, but who cares if he claims he's sick and won't eat food he brought?.
"But the smell. What will you do to cover the smell?" his sandwich asked him.
"Spices! I'll cover you in spices. The strongest smelling spices. He doused the sandwich in peppermint extract, which surprisingly, did fully cover the scent of rotting meat.
He spent the afternoon bathing it in a large bowl filled with peppermint extract. It was the strongest bonding moment the two of them had so far. They both were singing. Brian grabbed a toothbrish and whimsically pretended to be scrubbing it down. He had never had such a genuine connection with anyone before.
"Brian, do you trust me?"
He nodded.
"I require proof. Make a small incision on your hand and place a piece of me in it. We are blood brothers."
Hesitantly, Brian obliged, and he shoved a small piece of this maggot-infested minty meat into his hand and promptly poured alcohol on it. He then bandaged up the wound. As he sat in his favorite armchair waiting for the dinner with his new friends, he thought to himself "I'm so glad I'm trained in first-aid. Most people wouldn't be prepared for this and wouldn't even think to rinse the wound with alcohol."
As the meal time approached, Brian changed the bandage, put on his formal attire, and reheated the sandwich once more to freshen it up.
He rang the doorbell and was already starting to form pit stains through his one dress shirt.
"Hi, come in! This is my husband Kyle."
"Brian."
"Pleased to meat you, Brian. Please, take a seat. Can I get you something to drink?"
"Water please," Brian replied as he sat at the table.
The lunch sack he brought the sandwich in began to squirm. "Brian? Briiiiii-an... did you hear what the man said? Pleased to meat you? He knows. He has one of my brethren in his fridge. He calls it his meat-mate. His wife gets jealous. That's why she's so bubbly around you. She wants to make him jealous. Introduce me to his meat-mate. We can sort all this out."
Susan started looking concerned. "Brian? Are you ok? Hello? What happened to your hand?"
Kyle's demeanor quickly changed from one of sociable hospitality to distrust. He could tell there was something off about Brian.
Picking up on this, Brian attempted to build rapport. "I'm fine, really. It was just an accident in the kitchen."
Susan, trying to dismantle the awkwardness replied "ouch, I'm so sorry. Kyle just did that a few months back."
At that moment, Brian turned to Kyle with curiosity. He looked deep into his eyes and told him in a very heart-to-heart manner "I want to show you something."
He opened up his lunch sack and pulled out his slab of rotten meat sandwiched between two blue-green moldy pieces of bread. Ashamed he never married, Brian said "my beautiful wife was jealous of it at first, but we have a very different bond." Turning to Susan, he explained "the bond between man and woman is different from between man and meat. Your husband's meat can co-exist with you. You don't need to feel threatened."
"You need to leave. Meal's over, bud. Get out, Kyle said while clutching a knife under the table. As Brian grabbed his sandwich and was headed out, he saw the knife and grew concerned for Susan's safety. Clearly, Kyle had gone too far down this dark path and had become so fixated on his meat-mate that he was going to do away with his sweet wife Susan, Brian thought.
Sitting in his apartment, Brian wondered if he had gone too far himself. "I knew this was too good to be true." He grabbed the sandwich and decided to dispose of both it and Kyle's meat-mate, but he knew as they were blood-bonded, it was impossible for him to willingly destroy the sandwich. "Shit! Kyle's cut! He's blood-bonded to his as well, and they're both held captive by his sandwich. He wasn't trying to be rude to me. His sandwich wanted him to make me leave. The only way out is for me to eat Kyle's sandwich and him to eat mine. He's so deep into this, I know won't eat another man's sandwich though."
Over the next couple hours, Brian devised a plan to sneak into their home and incorporate small pieces of his sandwich into all of their food and of course, do Kyle the kindness of taking his sandwich out of the freezer and eating it for him.
He decided he needed to find out when they are having guests over next and incorporate it into their dishes then because they will be preparing enough food that he can spread it more easily amongst the dishes without getting noticed.
Unfortunately, as the weeks went by before they would have guests over, Brian's hand bwcame infected, and the infection was worsoning. It began to take on a repuslive smell, much like his sandwich, and the flesh of his hamd was becoming discolored. He noticed this was what happened to the bun. It had also changed color over time.
In another week, Brian's whole body was aching. He was feverish and throwing up what little he had in his stomach. "The meat is fighting back. I need to act soon."
The next day, once his neighbors left for work, he broke in and immediately searched their freezer. Unable to find meat-mate, he started mixing pieces of his sandwich among the foods they had in the fridge. Now, all he needed to do was wait.
The next day, Brian woke up invigorated knowing he had been cleansed, but he looked down at his hand, at it had even gotten worse. More drastic measures needed to be taken. He figured his hand had already metamorphasized into more rotten pork meat than man. It was too late for his hand, but perhaps the rest of him could be saved. As his luck would have it, there was a community potluck for the apartment the following evening. He promptly signed up to bring peppermint pork.

2023.06.07 18:34 coco9882 Lisbon Trip Review
Lengthy but hope it helps someone!
· *Where to stay- I stayed in Baixa and I was so happy to not have to walk up any hills or steps to get to my AirBNB. It was in the middle of everything, it was flat, and I felt very safe. I was very close to two metro stations and the Rossio train station, which made it easy to travel. The only downside was it was hard for Uber’s to get to me.
*Things to know- bread, olives, and butter are NOT free tapas. Don’t eat them or ask to send them away, depending on the restaurant, they will charge quite a bit.
Bring sunblock- the prices of sunblock were OUTRAGEOUS in Cascais. Like over 10 for a small, off brand bottle.
Have cash, most places accept card but if you want to stop at a random spot for a shot of Ginjinha, you’ll need a couple euros.
Lisboa card- I purchased it for 3 days. I don’t think it was really worth it. Some of the free attractions were too crowded to stand in line for and then the museums I went to, only the tile museum was free. I did receive discounts at the other museums but it was minimal. I really only used it for the bus and metro and that is so cheap, I could have just bought a travel card.
Belem is over 30 min from the city on the bus so you will need a whole day there. We actually spent a day and a half since there was so much to see and so many museums in that area. Wait in line for Pasteis de Belem, they have a great system down and it does not take a long time at all. Definitely try different variations of Pasteis in Lisbon. Don’t pay to go into the Padrao dos Descobrimentos monument- it’s better to just walk around and explore the outside.
Public transportation is PACKED but very cheap to use. You will have no standing room on the metro or bus. Keep that in mind when you’re coming from the airport, but really, it is fine. Just a lot of people using it.
· *Museums/attractions- top 2 were definitely the Museu de Marinha and Tile museum, two major components of Lisbon’s history. The maritime history museum was impressive and very informative. There were so many models of the ships detailing Portugal’s history of ocean exploration. They also had a warehouse with royal barges you could walk around and look at.
The tile museum was absolutely breathtaking. Further away from city center but do not miss it!
Loved Castelo de S Jorge- you can buy your ticket online but it is a little bit more than buying in person, you will get to skip the line though. The views are amazing and walls are cool to walk around on. There’s peacocks living on the grounds. There’s a small kiosk selling beer, ice cream, and some snacks so you can definitely spend some time relaxing there.
Take a sunset beach cruise. I can recommend one if you want to dm me but we had such an amazing time. It was a relaxing experience where we saw dolphins swimming and the company provided some history of the city, wine, and meats and cheeses. The sunset is beautiful but it does get really windy and chilly, bring a jacket!
Caza das vellas loreto- oldest candle shop in the world
· * Day trip to Sintra- omg the hills! I visited Quinta de la Regaleira, Moorish Castle, and Pena palace. You can book tickets online for a small discount. I took an early train that was already very packed and people were standing for part of the journey. I used my Lisboa card for train. Once I got to Sintra, we walked to Quinta De La Regaleira- this was my favorite place, the grounds were beautiful, there was a bit of a wait for the well but I thought it was worth it. I walked through the small house and the carpentry and flooring was breathtaking!
We then went to lunch at Tascantiga, a tapas restaurant, food came out SO fast even though it was busy, so that says everything about the quality. It was fine. From there, we took a tuktuk to Moorish castle. It cost us 10 per person, but average is 7-15 depending on the tuktuk. Going down, everyone charges 5 per person. Moorish castle was so cool to explore but it is very steep and lots of stairs! The views are amazing including the coast and Pena palace.
We then took the trail through the woods to Pena palace. Many people on tiktok said you can buy a park pass and then not wait in line for the palace and could walk around the palace exterior. THIS IS NOT TRUE. To even get to the exterior of the palace, you must wait in line, regardless if you want to go into the interior or not. We were the idiots that got turned away for listening to TikTok people. I was okay with it at that point because the walk up to the palace was so steep, I was not going to wait in line for over an hour!
We took a tuktuk down and had them drop us off at terrace bar with a view of the Sintra palace (can’t recall the name) before we ventured to Bar do Binho for a port wine tasting.
· *Day trip to Caiscais- loved this super chill beach town. Took the metro to Cais Do Sodre train station and took the train along the coast. Walked around the town, chilled at the beach, went to the outdoor bar at Rainha for a cocktail. Had amazing oysters at Sr. Manuel seafood bar.
· *Favorite places to eat: · Ponto Final lived up the hype. Go for lunch, we made a rez (all are made for 12:30 or 7:30pm) and got sat right away. The food was better than expected and the view just can’t be beat! Definitely recommend taking the water taxi back as it drops you off in Belem. · Bon Jardim- I am still dreaming of this chicken, no frills restaurant · O Trevo- sandwich counter, great chicken noodle soup! Visited by Anthony Bourdain · Chapito a Mesa- restaurant with a view that is attached to a circus performing arts center. Menu was really unique and food was incredible. · Ludo’s- brunch spot, menu looked great but we stopped in for their dragonfruit cocktail! So fresh!
· * Favorite bars · Topo Martim Moniz- such a cool spot, great rooftop bar with unique craft cocktails and arcade games! Cocktails were a little pricey compared to other places but it was worth it · Pink street- trashy but you need to visit the bars just to people watch

2023.06.07 15:34 turkeyfett Early Game Breeding Guide
I noticed that most Pokemon Scarlet/Violet breeding guides assume that you are in the late game, with access to all locations & sandwich ingredients. When I started a new game to transfer in pokemon from Home & then breed them as early as possible to create my team, I struggled to find the best way to do so. So from my learnings, I’m writing this guide to hopefully help others!
How early in the game can you start breeding pokemon? First you must get past Mesagoza City after starting the Treasure Hunt, as the final assignment from the academy. Then you can gain access to Picnics, which is the only method for breeding. Other guides clearly outline this.
How to breed many eggs in a quick manner? Even with compatible breeding pokemon, it can take over 30 minutes for an egg to be produced without you using any Egg Powers. So naturally we need to find the best way to get Egg Powers! Egg Power 1 is also painfully slow to produce eggs, so Egg Power 2 is what you want (anywhere from 35 to 75 eggs per 30 minutes!). The best way to get Egg Power 2 is to make sandwiches with peanut butter, but unfortunately peanut power isn’t available until later in the game – which is the downfall of most other guides for early game breeding.
What’s the best way to get Egg Power 2 early game? From my research, I believe it’s by traveling to Levincia City or Cascarrafa City to find a Gastronomie en Famille restaurant. Expect calls from Arven & Cassiopeia about nearby objectives during travels to either of these cities, which won’t hinder your journey.
What’s the best way to reach Levincia City? To get there, you must travel east from Mesagoza City & then northeast from Artazon City. The main path from Artazon City to Levincia City is blocked by Team Star, so you must jump across the river using Miraidon/Koraidon. From the Team Star barrier, follow the river much farther east. Eventually you’ll see a spot across the river with a slope down to a small beach, where it’s an easy jump to reach the other side. Then you can continue to Levincia City.
What’s the best way to reach Cascarrafa City? To get there, you must travel west from Mesagoza City. Proceed west through Cortondo City, then follow the path that eventually turns north towards Cascarrafa City. The main path finally leading up to Cascarrafa City is blocked by Team Star, so you must jump north down into Asado Desert using Miraidon/Koraidon. Then you can continue east to Cascarrafa City.
Where to get Egg Power 2 in Levincia City or Cascarrafa City? First get the pokemon you want to breed in your party, ready to go. Ideally with a Ditto transferred from Home, but any compatible breeding pokemon will do (other guides detail egg families if you need further help here). Then find the Gastronomie en Famille restaurant, which is in the southeast section of Levincia City or the west section of the middle level of Cascarrafa City (the building has a gold plate/fork symbol on display). Purchase the Compote du Fils for 2800 pokedollars (or 2800 LP), which gives Egg Power 2 for the next 30 minutes! Then race to directly outside the city, find a flat area quickly, & start your picnic. Check the picnic basket regularly, to collect the eggs into your pokemon box storage. Congratulations! Then the eggs can easily be hatched running back & forth in any city, while riding Miraidon/Koraidon.
What if I have many different pokemon to breed? Egg Power 2 lasts 30 minutes, so you can have multiple different picnics. Collect the number of eggs you want, end your picnic, change your party, start a new picnic, & keep collecting more eggs. You can always buy more Compote du Fils to start Egg Power 2 again. If you run out of pokedollars, you can use LP instead. If you run out of both pokedollars & LP, you can look for items outside the city to sell. The beach south of Levincia City or Asado Desert both have many valuable items, which can be found by picking up the sparkling dots which are “hidden” items.
How do I breed Hisuian pokemon? If you try to breed a Hisuian Zorua with a Ditto, you will hatch a non-Hisuian Zorua instead. You must have your Hisuian Zorua hold an Everstone while breeding, which will allow you to hatch a Hisuian Zorua. Pokemon that only have a Hisuian final form cannot be bred to obtain more from Hisui, for instance breeding a Hisuian Typhlosion will produce a Cyndaquil but it will evolve into a non-Hisuian Typhlosion instead. Also note that holding breeding-related items such as an Everstone will only allow that pokemon to breed. For instance 1 Ditto, 1 female Hisuian Growlithe holding an Everstone, & 4 other pokemon in your party will only produce eggs that hatch into Hisuian Growlithe.
Feel free to comment if you have any advice to add to this guide. If you found an easier way to obtain Egg Power 2 early game, I’d like to hear about it!

2023.06.07 15:05 Positive_Technology2 4 years old, the way I explained to a kid AI and copyright
One day Plankton succeeds in his mission, he finally manages to steal the recipe for Krabby Patty thanks to one of his bizarre inventions. He was so good this time that Mr Krab didn't notice a thing.
A few days later the Chum Bucket begins selling a sandwich very similar to the Krabby Patty, the Plankton Patty. It's a version almost entirely the same as the Krabby Patty, practically very few things change. For example, if the original Krabby Patty has lettuce on top of the hamburger, the Plankton sandwich has it underneath. Plankton adds many small differences and in the end creates a version very similar to the original sandwich, only a little less good.
Mr Krab isn't stupid, he realizes immediately that Plankton must somehow have copied the recipe, but he has no evidence on his side. To defend himself against Mr Krabs's accusations, Plankton keeps repeating that his sandwich is completely different from that of the Krusty Krab and that the old crab is only envious and afraid of the competition.
For a few days things remain the same, Krusty Krab sales are booming as always, Plankton's sandwich poses no real threat, similar as it is, it still can't compete, the original is simply better, people from Bikini Bottom has no reason to eat at Chum Bucket.
Plankton then decides to change his strategy, he decides to open a second Chum Bucket, then he opens another one and then he opens another one. Bikini Bottom is now filled with Chum Buckets, they are everywhere.
Plankton's strategy works, the people of Bikini Bottom start eating at his restaurants. They're just everywhere, if you're craving for a sandwich there's a Chum Bucket just around the corner, the Plankton Patty won't be as good as a Krabby Patty, but at least it's very easy to find and a bit cheaper.
Mr Krab knows he's right, he too could open more restaurants around the city, but because he has to be the one to change, it's Plankton who's doing something wrong.
Spongebob is really fast and capable at making sandwiches, but alone he can't compete with Plankton's machines, he may be the best but recently Plankton has even started delivering sandwiches at home. They come directly to your door. If you even think about the word sandwich, you'll end up with one Plankton Patty in your mouth.
Luckily, there will always be someone who will remember how good the original Krabby Patties are, someone who recognizes real work and effort. But unfortunately many of the Bikini Bottom fishes are fine with that, they just don't care that they're chewing something that's been stolen.
I have this little cousin, he's only 4 years old and during a conversation with my uncle about AI and everything else, he started asking questions. After explaining the AI to him so he could understand what I was talking about I also explained why I don't like it.
Considering that my little cousin enjoys drawing I went into "protection" mode, for the moment it is better staying far away from this technology since he is in the middle of a delicate moment of development.
In the future if he wants to approach AI he will still have every opportunity to do so, I don't like the idea very much but in the end those will always be his choices.

2023.06.07 01:30 nonstopcabaret Coffee/sandwhich shops with good ambience and outdoor seating?
I come to Temecula from Hemet all the time, mainly for shopping, but I need to find some good cafes to visit while I’m there! Preferably cafes that serve sandwiches/pastries also. A good laid back ambience is preferred too. I love ones that have an old/historic restaurant feel to them. Also, any good antique/vintage stores? Thanks!

2023.06.07 00:05 towman32526 I yelled at some old guy in a wheelchair today
Was trying to order lunch at the BBQ place that is self service other than them handing you your food.
This woman working the restaurant stopped by this table where 2 old men were waiting on their wives to bring them food, so she could wipe the table down.
The men immediately started snapping at her about why she hasn't brought them silverware or done anything for them, and just keep getting nastier when she calm tried to tell them how the restaurant worked.
I finally had enough when I noticed she had walked off and was crying and they were still talking shit.
I turned around and told them both they needed to shut the fuck up and go home if they wanted to be so fucking rude to someone just trying to work their job. To which one of them asked me what my problem was. I told him, "old rude fucks like you" and turned around to finish ordering my food. I told the guy making my food, man, I know your not allowed to say it ,so I'm going to. He insisted on putting his employee discount on my sandwiches lol.
I don't at all feel bad about it, they deserved everything told to them, but it just felt weird since you're always told to respect the elderly

2023.06.06 23:28 freddiebenson4ever It never ends and now I’m shaming my partner. I feel awful
Trigger warning: restrictive eating disorders, restrictive eating, binge eating disorders, calorie shaming, orthorexia (?)
I’ve always struggled with body image issues but I developed a serious restrictive ED in 2020. It took 2 years to start eating breakfast and lunch, and even then/now it’s just a protein yogurt for breakfast and a protein granola bar for lunch. I have gained weight and look “healthy” because I don’t severely restrict anymore (ex I eat snacks and have bumped up calories) but I’m obsessed with staying the same size.
A problem in my relationship with my kind, supportive and loving partner is that he has binge eating disorder while I have anorexia so we trigger each other. I get triggered by his eating and project it onto him and say things like “we just eat very differently” and “it’s important for me to date someone who values eating healthy” and this really hurt him. Just now, I had a breakdown over going to a restaurant with his friends and I stayed home and he went. I also have bipolar 2 disorder and feel in a mixed episode. I am miserable at work and I am starting a (somewhat of a risk) 2nd graduate program right after finishing my MA and my head has been spinning.
I see a therapist but I don’t think CBT is working for my condition. I am so anxious, and I feel HORRIBLE that my partner has to deal with my relapses and then I project shame onto him when he eats a burger and a sandwich in the same day. I know I sound like a horrible person but I genuinely feel a monster has taken over my thoughts and made me say that, as I do not at all support food shaming. I’m a terrible partner and he’s too understanding (possibly codependent and doesn’t look out for himself). His recent eating habits make me feel less attracted to him and it’s something I want to (but can’t) say.
Please help. I really need support and advice because I feel awful and ashamed. The man I want to be with forever is never going to marry me if I act this way.

Monday:
- 11 a.m. Slept in since it’s a holiday and enjoyed a delicious breakfast with my boyfriend (J) of some chocolate chip banana bread my mom made. We don’t tend to spend weeknights at each other’s places, so we love our weekends together.
- 12:15 p.m. J heads back to his place to meal prep for the week and do chores. Always the lover of a good cheap find, I went to Goodwill for a 25% off sale. I purchased an Adidas duffel bag, a t-shirt, some unused candles, and an expansion pack for a card game my friends and I enjoy. $35
- 1:30 p.m. One of my core lunchtime necessities as of late is hummus. But specifically the Target brand original. Plus it’s cheap. I also needed other basic necessities: toothpaste, tissues, laundry items, and a prebiotic powder I take daily to control IBS symptoms. I stock up once every two months so this was a big trip. Target Circle had a coupon for one of the laundry items and $10 off on a purchase of $70 or more. $111.25
- 2:15 p.m. Back home laden with one Target bag worth over $100, I crack open my new container of hummus and make a turkey wrap with a side of carrots, an apple, and some veggie straws. I have this every day and it never gets old.
- 3:45 p.m. Watch an episode of Maid on Netflix before going to play video games online with J.
- 7:30 p.m. J and our friends hop online to play a multiplayer game for an hour or two before I jump off to eat. Chicken sausage, green beans, carrots, egg white wrap, and rice. My favorite dinner at the moment!
- 10:30 p.m. In bed and decided to start reading the monthly book club picked by J. Couldn’t put it down for a while but was asleep by 12:30 a.m.
- Total spent: $146.25
Tuesday:
- 7:45 a.m. Alarm goes off. Work after a 4 day weekend. Yay. Out of bed by 8:15. I work from home so I log in, check my emails, and go grab breakfast. I take my morning probiotics, vitamin D, and allergy medicine as a side to my morning blueberry bagel. After a slow morning online, I hit the exercise bike for a quick 15 minute ride. Shower, then a meeting.
- 11 a.m. Whip up my normal lunch of: turkey wrap, carrots, hummus, apple, and veggie straws. After lunch, I grab a couple of Reese’s Thins. Not as good, I know.
- 2 p.m. Work is slow today so I hop on my PC and play a few missions in my current favorite game. I have an oil change at 2 and groceries to pick up from Walmart after. At the oil change, they tell me I need to replace my wiper blades and cabin air filter. I can do that on my own and purchase the parts needed on Amazon. Car & groceries: $172.92
- 3:15 p.m. After my appointment, I hop back into my game and see some items from my Steam wishlist are on sale. I grab them as I’ve been wanting to get them for a while. $24.04
- 4 p.m. There’s a new Spider-Man movie coming out this week that I really want to see. Mentioned to J that we should go but tickets were a bit pricey since it was opening night. He offered to pay.
- 6:30 p.m. Same as the night before. I’m out of chicken sausage now and forgot to add them to my order this morning. Oh well.
- 8:30 p.m. Watch another episode of Maid while I eat. After the temperature cooled down for the night, I went for an hour-long walk around a nearby small lake. Get hissed at by geese and dive-bombed by a red-winged blackbird. Nature is beautiful.
- 11 p.m. In bed reading J’s book club pick. It’s right up my alley and this will be a breeze to get through. Asleep by 12:45 a.m.
- Total spent: $196.96
Wednesday:
- 7:45 a.m. My alarm goes off and I once again snooze until around 8:15. One of my cats makes her way into my room and bugs me until I get up. Turn on my work computer and go start my morning with a blueberry bagel and my medicine cocktail.
- 8:30 a.m. I jump in the shower (hair wash day) and get cleaned up to head to my monthly chiropractor appointment.
- 10:15 a.m. I pulled a muscle in my back just over a year ago and enjoyed my chiropractor visits, so I now do them monthly. This is the last time I’m going to prepay and switch to as-needed. Paid through the end of the year.
- 10:45 a.m. My chiropractor is next to a used-clothing store so I swing in. Attending a wedding at the end of June so I’ve been looking for an outfit. I don’t find one. I find others. Also a shirt for J. Everything I bought was half off! Nothing was over $7. Grabbed 4 things. $21.25
- 4:30 p.m. It was a very slow day at work, just tested some emails, so I spent a majority of the day gaming. My job goes through heavy phases and I’m in a big lull. I sign off for the day and head to the climbing gym.
- 6 p.m. After a short climbing session, my friend M and I go to an outdoor store to buy climbing harnesses. I have one but it doesn’t fit right and he has been renting one. We find the ones we want in store but see they’re cheaper online. He has a store membership so he pays and I Venmo him back. I’m selling my old harness (only used for 2 months) to another climbing friend for $50. Almost breaking even! $3.27
- 7:15 p.m. I arrive back home and make a sandwich for dinner. Cooking seems like too much work tonight. J is at a work event tonight, otherwise we usually climb together than cook a meal after. While eating, I turn on Into the Spiderverse to prepare for the second one tomorrow. It’s still too hot for a walk so I skip that tonight.
- 9:45 p.m. After the movie I watch some Good Mythical Morning episodes I’m behind on and munch on some mini marshmallows for dessert. I prep my camera equipment for an event I’m shooting tomorrow for work. As I get ready for bed I listen to an audiobook. I read for book club for the rest of the night. Asleep around 11:30.
- Total: $24.52
Thursday:
- 7 a.m. I get up early as I need to be at a work event by 10 a.m. I’m photographing it so I won’t have to work too hard. I say now.
- 9:15 a.m. I head out to be to the event a few minutes early to find street parking. The event lasts until 2, so I pay for 4 hours of parking. I could submit for reimbursement but eh, it's not much. $2.50
- 1:45 p.m. I did end up fully participating as well as photographing. We wrap early after sweating in the sun weeding and mulching for a low-income apartment complex. I head home to shower, nap, and relax. Work gave those who volunteered the rest of the afternoon off.
- 5:15 p.m. J arrives at my place after work and we head to see the new Spiderman movie. I pack us some homemade popcorn and various other treats from the pantry. Movie was 10000/10. Go see it. I knew about 45 seconds in that I wanted to see it again. Did not disappoint.
- 8:30 p.m. Despite the snacks, we are still hungry after the movie and decide to go to a local Japanese place. We go in to order and J graciously pays. When we go out, he tends to pay as I typically buy and make a fair amount of our home cooked meals. At first we were given the wrong order, which we realized when we got home. He headed back to get the right order so we got two sets of meals for the price of one! We had opened the first order to see if we liked it enough to deal but it wasn’t enough food for the both of us.
- 12:30 a.m. J stays over and we get to sleep just after midnight.
- Total: $2.50
Friday:
- 8 a.m. J’s alarm goes off but I sleep through it so he has to wake me up. We lounge in bed until his first meeting at 8:30. After his meeting, he leaves for work and I log on to my own. I have no meetings today and a very generous policy where we get Friday afternoon’s off during the summer. I plug away at some small projects I’ve put off for most of the week and log off around 1.
- 1:30 p.m. I went to check the mail as I had 3 deliveries coming today. All arrived! My internet bill came too which I usually throw away, but had a feeling I should open this one. I was right. My bill had gone up $10 because of some new policy I didn’t know about because I hadn’t read any of the last few months of bills. I updated what I needed to to get the price lowered again and spend the next hour researching a new provider but I’m stuck for my area. Ended up purchasing a router so I can return the company’s one and save some more money monthly. $96.72
- 3 p.m. I get a random email that a medical visit from over a year ago wasn’t going to be covered by insurance. I log into my account and see if it’s real, which it is, so unfortunately I pay for it. I don’t remember what the visit was for but insurance covered $0 of it. After I update my spending tracker. Thankfully it was a 3 paycheck month so I’m more than fine. Had a lot of surprising big expenses come up in May. $89
- 5:45 p.m. I leave for J’s so we can eat dinner together and watch an episode of the Last of Us (yeah, we’re a bit late on this one) before we head to the climbing gym.
- 10:30 p.m. We get back from climbing and have a craving for chocolate chip cookies. I help J make a small batch and we eat a few each. We watch the Last of Us and I fall asleep on the couch. Bed time at 12:30 a.m.
- Total: $185.72
Saturday:
- 9:45 a.m. I slept like the dead. J wakes me up as he’s on his way out to go have brunch with a friend. I slowly wake up and leave his place soon after to get my house cleaned before some friends come over.
- 12:30 p.m. J comes to my place after his brunch to help me clean before a double date with my high school best friend and her fiancé.
- 2:45 p.m. They arrive! We chat and play some card games. They leave around 5, so J and I dive back into Last of Us.
- 6:30 p.m. I reheated some leftover chicken from Thursday, frozen green beans, potatoes, carrots, and rice for dinner. We finish the season and discuss the show for a while before he heads home.
- 12:30 a.m. Bedtime!
- Total: $0
Sunday:
- 8:30 a.m. J and I are going to look at some houses today so in my excitement I don’t sleep very well. I get up after laying in bed for a few hours to get ready and go pick him up.
- 10:30 a.m. Open house tour commence! We see 4 houses before lunch time.
- 12:30 p.m. We decided to go to a local chicken restaurant and more than ate our fill. J paid. I dropped him back at his apartment and headed to visit my parents for the afternoon.
- 2 p.m. I arrive at my mom’s house and she dyes my hair. We used a bottle of dye I had purchased a few months back.
- 5 p.m. Game time! I hop on with J and his friends and we complete some missions in our go-to game. I stop to grab a quick snack soon after, still pretty full from our big lunch.
- 8 p.m. J hops off for a break and I do as well. He calls me right after leaving the main call and we chat about our week ahead and hang out while we do our own things.
- 9 p.m. I’m feeling very tired after not sleeping well this weekend so I go to get ready for bed. I stay up on TikTok for a while and get to sleep around 11.
- Total: $0
Food + Drink (Groceries): $64.28
Fun + Entertainment: $26.94
Home + Health: $187.21
Clothes + Beauty: $64.81
Transport + Vehicle Health: $109.34
Other: $99.99
Total: ~$556
This is NOT a typical week! Lots of medium things that added up happening at the end/beginning of a new month. That's life! When I buy things I use regularly, I often buy 2-3 more than I need at a time so that I don't have to get them as often. Unless J and I are together, I don't go out to eat to save money. I'm very lucky to work from home and save a lot of expenses that way. My job is pretty low-key and quiet most of the day, so I didn't detail too much about it this week.
Edit: I forgot to mention above that J and I are not buying a house together, I'm helping him look. We really go to open houses for fun right now as he isn't thinking about buying until late this yeaearly next year. Interest rates are insane right now! I have a super low rate and am not looking forward to losing out on it some day.

2023.06.06 18:27 Quick_Analyst2836 Cycle Recap: from 0.9 first semester UGPA --> SLS with full need-based fellowship (super non-trad; FGLI; nURM; took me years to apply)
I posted some partial cycle recaps under a different account and wasn't going to post another one, but as a super non-trad/FGLI/slow applicant I thought this might be useful: I'll go over stats, goals, app process responses, background, and my decision/reflections. It's long but hopefully helpful.
Stats: 3.65, 174, T-2 softs, FGLI, nURM, 10-years work experience (5 in more prestigious work; 5 in service industry), big public undergrad (T-100ish)
Goals: federal clerkship, federal gov work (DOJ--OLC, NLRB), unicorn PI, in-house, politics (maybe). Very justice oriented, open to opportunities I don't know about yet.
App Process: - I had dropped out of undergrad after my first semester, when my GPA was literally 0.9 (I actually withdrew partway into the second semester so got a bunch of "W"s as well--but thank goodness I did or my GPA would have been totally irretrievable).
- About 3 years later, I got involved in politics and decided I wanted to go to law school. Went back and finished my undergrad, 2017-2020. Picked an easy major at the advice of a law prof I knew (god bless her for that advice) and got all A's and a lot of A+'s which weighted my GPA enough to get me back in the game. (I know folks have ~opinions~ on this strategy, but I was also working full time and overcoming that 0.9, so I don't feel bad about it.)
- Graduated in 2020 with highest honors
- Spent the terrible summer of 2020 self-studying for the LSAT: I used a Kaplan book and paid $100 for the unlimited practice tests. Studied 15-20 hours/week for about 10 weeks; took the August 2020 LSAT Flex (3 sections, remote proctored--which was super creepy). Got a 174 and didn't look back! I'm super glad I buckled down and focused and didn't have to take it more than once: everyone is different, but overall I'd recommend this over half-assed studying for longer...just rip off the bandaid.
- I was originally going to apply for 2022 matriculation, so I contacted my academic references in 2020 to establish that they would be willing to submit a LOR for me the next year: this was really key because I ended up waiting to apply, and it would have def been harder to get those LORs if I'd waited to ask/they forgot about me.
- Decided to wait another year to apply b/c I love my job and also wanted to save more money. Spent the time getting promoted a couple times and winning some awards to beef up my app. Applying slowly (having my LSAT done for years before applying) was actually a huge stress reliever and I definitely made apps more feasible while working FT.
- Started working on my PS/DS in spring/summer 2022. I wrapped my journey through trauma/abuse into both of them, but tried to not "trauma dump." I def recommend having a variety of friends read these, esp. if you have tough stuff to read, because you want to disclose enough the reader knows what you've overcome but not too much...
- Finalized professional LORs in spring 2022.
- Applied October 2022 to all schools, following 8 weeks of spending 20 hours/week on essays (in retrospect I should have done more for my essays earlier! It was seriously way more intense and grueling than I expected. I spent probably 40 hours on my PS, conservatively).
- Essays submitted: PS and DS for all (DS by other names for some, but same idea). Submitted GPA addendum for all schools and a separate statement for schools that asked specifically about academic probation. Used the same PS for all schools including Berk (it was 3 pages). Didn't submit a "why X" to any schools. For SLS, submitted the library essay and teaching essay.
Responses: - A: SLS ($$$$ - need-based), Penn ($$+), Berkeley ($$$$ - PI), UVA ($$$), Cornell ($+), NU ($), WashU ($$$+), UT ($$$) (withdrawn from all except SLS)
- WL: YLS, Columbia, NYU, GULC (withdrawn from all)
- R: Harvard (no KJ1)
I got the Berk PI scholly and was a finalist for the Penn PI scholly (interviewed). Interviewed at WashU and submitted Kiras for NU and UT
Background: I won't tell my
whole life story, but these are components that were relevant to my app
- Grew up very poor with a single dad and my mom wasn't involved. Dad was very abusive (physically, emotionally). Parents were blue collar but my dad's parents had gone to college (most schools considered this FG, though not Penn--read the fine print.)
- Went to a very good public high school that gave me a solid academic background as well as exposure to wealthy people and academics: this made a big difference in seeing how life could be.
- Went to flagship state school, declared STEM major the first time around. Had a lot of PTSD and trouble handling my trauma, which led to failing everything my first semester.
- Dropped out, started working in the restaurant industry. Worked 60+ hours/week to save money and support my own deadbeat husband and his brother (got married at 19; divorced at 23).
- We organized a union at the restaurant and I was a leader, helped negotiate the contract, and was a union steward. Got involved in local politics from this and found out I'm really good at organizing/politics. Volunteered heavily in politics for several years before getting a paid campaign job (county council race). Got a better campaign job (county commissioner) that parlayed into government work. Worked my way up in local gov to be the top non-elected position in county gov. Established reputation as lead political consultant in local/state politics.
- This work/volunteer experience put me in contact with people who have been incredible mentors to me and given me opportunities I wouldn't have been able to imagine just a few years ago. This includes: political leaders, elected officials, law school professors, partners at major law firms, etc. This also gave me a really well-rounded idea of what I could do as an attorney and a lot of people who I could ask questions off/learn about the profession. I cannot over-stress how life changing this has been: I wouldn't have even applied to schools like SLS without their encouragement and logistical support. As a FGLI person, I realize what a HUGE privilege this is. I have turned this around into being a mentoLOR writer for a lot of young people, esp. FGLI ones, women, and BIPOC, and their successes give me so much joy.
Decision/Reflections: - I had committed/deposited to UVA when I got the SLS response (late April). Even before I got fin aid info, I knew it would be hard to turn down, and then with fin aid it was a no brainer. I'll add that I am pretty debt averse but my mentors really pushed me to accept at SLS regardless of what the cost was going to be. I think it's good to be debt averse, but I also think there's a time to take a risk; risk aversion can be a trauma response (it is for me), and having mentors who could see the bigger picture (i.e. opportunities SLS will give me) has been a really helpful perspective.
- This is NOT a "I pulled myself up by my bootstraps and you can too" story. Yes, I have worked very hard, but I have also been super lucky (right place, right time). In LSAT terms, hard work is a necessary but not a sufficient condition for my successes: many other people work just as hard but don't get a break like this, and I realize the randomization in life and law school admissions. As my sister put it "You did the work of standing in line to buy a lottery ticket, and you got a winning ticket."
- I also have a lot of privilege despite being FGLI: white, cis/het, able-bodied, well spoken by rich/white standards (no accent, good grammar). It's gross, but I know that people who are BIPOC, LGBTQIA2+, fat, disabled, or speak with an accent are judged more harshly; and I want to acknowledge my privilege even when I'm the youngest/poorest/least educated/only woman in the room.
- Fuck the LSAC. I paid thousands of dollars (app fees, LSAT, practice tests), etc., because I made too much for the waivers but not enough to be able to afford that comfortably. Barriers like costs, applying for waivers, etc. only serve to make a private company money and hold back poor people. I am grateful for mentors who urged me to suck it up and spend more on apps for better odds at acceptance/$$$ (and for being able to afford that).
- I have a really hard time allowing myself to feel proud of myself (in general), but I am proud of myself for this.

2023.06.06 17:33 quitlater This look normal?
| About a month ago I went on a trip to Hawai’i. On the last day there I ate at a mom and pop Hawaiian food restaurant. On the plane back home I ate two cheese sandwiches. As soon as I got home I had diarrhea and then I was constipated for a few days. I’m not sure what caused it. Ever since I’ve had an irregular poop schedule. I’m finally starting to poop on a more normal schedule but my poop still looks odd. Any ideas what might be the issue? Thanks. submitted by quitlater to poop [link] [comments] |
2023.06.06 16:52 memilyl Elevated vacation food prep ideas?
Next weekend, my wife and I are headed to a seaside town in Connecticut to celebrate my birthday. We will be there from Thursday evening to Sunday, staying at a hotel where we will have access to a full fridge and stove. While we will throughly enjoy eating at different restaurants and bakeries in the town, I want to bring some prepared (by me!) food with us to have on hand for snacks or meals on-the-go. Since this is for my birthday (and because planning for a trip is 50% of the fun of the trip, for me), I'd love to do some dishes that are interesting/elevated. I'd also love to celebrate what's in season here on the East Coast.
Some things I'm considering:
- Pasta salad: this really seems to be trending across social media and I love the idea of making it with interesting dressings and lots of veggies
- Hearty refrigerator-friendly sandwiches: like muffaletta
- Cut fruit
I also don't drink alcohol, so I'm interested in making some yummy refreshing beverages in advance, too.
What other ideas or recommendations do you have?

2023.06.06 16:26 HugACactusPrick My ndad and emom made me fat on purpose then blamed me for it
Before starting this post I do want to specify that I will be talking about eating disorders in here so please skip if it is hard to read, and I hope you find healing and love yourself.
So I’m thinking back to my childhood, and how my ndad and emom made me fat on purpose. My parents came from a very poor eastern European country where food was scarce and bread was basically everything. My whole entire life my dad has been able to eat mountains of food everyday without gaining weight, even to this day. If I had to guess his caloric intake it’s probably 4-6k calories a day, so my dad would always order food for me at McDonalds or any other fast food restaurant and get me 2 sandwiches, a large drink and fry and trained me to eat a lot because he didn’t want me “to starve”. I ate adult portions as a child even at home, my mom would give me ridiculously large portions of processed foods and soda. For example: I’d get lunch at school and it’d be like a side of green beans, 4 chicken nuggets and a milk, then my mom would ask me what I ate at school and then would say in a condescending tone “they only give you 4 chicken nuggets???” Then proceed to give me like 12-15 chicken nuggets with like 4-6tbsp of sour cream. My dad also worked in pizza so he’d always bring home free food and I’d be pigging out on whatever he brought home. This is only an example but over time I got fat and that got me bullied. So, he put me in taekwondo “to stay active” even though I was always sheltered and my mom would call the cops if I rode my bike on any street other than up and down ours. I struggled a lot being active because I had trouble breathing.
As a 12 year old who was like 5’3 I already weighed over 200lbs. I remember my dad screaming at my mom because I was fat and he wanted her to put me on a diet. I don’t know what it is with my parents culture that is so obsessed with sour cream but my mom fed me a slice of bread with sour cream on it and salt because that’s apparently how her friend got her daughter to lose weight. It was disgusting. It didn’t work because it wasn’t sustainable and I was never taught about nutrition, calories and balance.
Before I knew it I had developed binge eating disorder into my teenage life, then I got a huge wake up call when I was over 300 when my doctor basically told me I was going to die from my health problems. Then my dad told me I ate like a pig and all of this could have been prevented. I wasn’t allowed to talk back to him but this made me spiral into anorexia and orthorexia, where I basically became very afraid of anything unhealthy/with preservatives but still did not eat enough. I did finally learn about nutrition but I didn’t apply it to my life and I just thought that skinny = good, fat = bad. When I lost half my body weight I had teachers at school and my counselor expressing concern and my dad would just tell me how good I looked and how I looked like a model because by the time I was almost done with high school I was 6 feet tall. Apparently I found out that he tried to make me fat so no boys would want me in school and I wouldn’t lose my virginity. Yeah, seriously.
When I look at old photos from that time I looked so pale, miserable and lifeless. I finally have a healthy relationship with food, my body, self esteem and have seeked a lot of counseling and therapy but that time of my life was so miserable. Has anybody else dealt with a similar situation?
