This infinity hallway can be used for magical shenanigans, or as a simple way to indicate that a hallway goes on for a long time. If infinity is more than you need, we've included files for building just the hallway. This project has been in the works for years, literally. I first ordered some of the stuff needed all the way back in February 2018. Five years later, I've finally nailed down the skills I needed to make this work well. This print requires special materials, which will leave you with a ton of leftover supplies. If there's demand for it, I'll consider selling kits with the plexiglass, reflective plastic, and stuff to make torches. Comment if you are interested, and if I see a few, I'll put up a poll. Check out this video of the hallway in action. I've made custom bases for hallways. While this tile is technically 3x2, if you print a 3x base, it won't line up well. I've uploaded a new set of bases to solve this problem. The tile is effectively the same as a 2x2 tile with two separate walls attached. I've also made versions of the bases with more space for electronics, and added space to all sets under 2x2 square bases. Finally, people have been asking for plain separate wall bases with the new flex magnetic holes in them, so I've added those as well. How to make the Infinity Hallway For this print you'll need plexiglass or polycarbonate. It must be 1/16" or smaller. You might struggle if it's larger than 1/20" (0.05 inches). In metric, 1mm or 1.5mm thick. You'll need a way to cut the plexiglass. I've included an svg if you have access to a laser cutter, but a plexiglass cutter will work too. You're cutting for just under 2 inches by 2.5 inches. Once the plexiglass is cut, you'll want to apply the window film cover, then trim it to size. Finally, paint the back of one of the pieces of plexiglass silver, and then after it dries, paint it black. How to make the Torches - Print the wall you want, a base, and the matching floor that is cut for walls. Use the old base design to give yourself a little more space to play with if you're doing a 2x2 tile. Also print the torch. There are two torch versions. The textured one is better on a resin printer. If you have only FDM, both can work, but the older, untextured torch is easier to print on FDM.
- Paint the tile and glue it.
- Take one of the 2 pin dupont cables and cut it in half. Feed it through the hole. When the wire is out of the other side, pull it snug to get the connector fully into the wall. If you look at the photo above, you can see that the connector goes fully inside the wall. You will always want the cable to have the red and black wires the same on every tile you make. With the wall facing me, I put the red (power) on the left, and black (ground) on the right.
- Strip some insulator off the end of the cable -- long enough that you can feed it through the holes in the lily pad battery holder. Red goes to +, Black to -. I tend to strip off about 1 inch so that I can feed the wire through and then wrap it/tie it to make it secure. It's better if you solder it, but you can get away with wrapping.
- Test the LED in the socket. The longer of the two wires should go in the red side of the connector. Once that's tested and it works, feed the LED through the torch body, test it again, and glue it down. I prefer to file the plastic top to scar it up to make it better at diffusion. Finally. I like to attach the LED with hot glue and shape that into a bit of a flame. Test it in the socket again.
- Once it all works, you can start trimming the wire from the LED so it sits snugly against the wall. Remember: You can't cut something to be longer, so trim it a little at a time and test until the torch can sit snugly against the wall.
- Remove the battery holder, and glue the wall into place on the tile, ensuring the wire makes it inside the middle of the base.
- Now, you can choose to feed it out through one of the clip holes, or trim it down and reattach the battery holder. There's a photo above showing how I fit the LilyPad inside the base.
- Finally, if you have any problems, come chat in the OpenForge Discord. We should be able to help you out.
Here's the set of gear I recommend: Soldering If you choose to go this path. Also useful - Hot Glue Gun Used to cover LED and sculpt flame
- Mini Files For scraping up the LED surface for better diffusion

2023.03.31 02:05 SammiBanani024 [Reality TV] The kids are not alright: How the CBS show Kid Nation skirted child labor laws as children killed chickens and debated religion on-air
(CW: animal death, religious discrimination, and child abuse/neglect – depending on how you look at it)
What is Kid Nation?
“I think I’m gonna die out here because there’s nothing.” – Jimmy, age 8 If you’re unfamiliar with the American reality show
Kid Nation, it’s not a surprise. Created by Tom Forman Productions and Endermol USA, the series
premiered on the CBS network on September 19, 2007.
Kid Nation features 40 children, ranging from ages 8 to 15, who are given 40 days to create a functioning society out of a ghost town without adult intervention,
Lord of the Flies-style. The children pass laws, elect leaders, and build an economy in pursuit of their goal.
Kid Nation received
mixed-to-negative reviews from critics and was awash in both controversy and legal trouble, leading to its cancellation in May 2008, after just one season. Despite this, the show has maintained a cult-like following among reality TV connoisseurs and received renewed interest in 2020 on social media, presumably due to the pandemic.
At the very beginning of
Kid Nation, the participants arrive in Bonanza City, New Mexico, where they are expected to build a viable community from the ground up. The show was filmed on location at the Bonanza Creek Movie Ranch, the purported “ghost town” on the show. In reality, the privately owned town is less of a ghost town and more of a movie set. Only 13 miles south of Santa Fe, Bonanza City has been used as a filming location since the early 1950s. Dozens of films have utilized the site, such as
Silverado,
The Legend of the Lone Ranger, and
A Million Ways to Die in the West. More recently, Bonanza City was the site of the infamous shooting during the filming of
Rust, during which Alec Baldwin discharged a prop firearm on set and accidentally killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. It's also somewhat of a tourist destination, with companies offering tourists
Jeep rides through Bonanza Creek Movie Ranch. At first, this may seem like a small discrepancy. After all, the kids are still building a society on their own in a relatively empty and isolated town – what does it matter if it’s really a ghost town or a movie set? But this inaccuracy is emblematic of the controversy surrounding
Kid Nation: for better or for worse, the conditions depicted on-air were not the reality of the children participating in the show.
The Structure of Kid Nation “Does anybody else think the Gold Star will significantly increase their sex appeal?” – Michael, age 14 In the first episode of
Kid Nation, the kids are told that four of their peers have been deemed members of the “town council” by the production team: Laurel, Mike, Taylor, and Anjay. The other 36 participants are divided into four bunks (also called teams or districts), and each bunk is led by one of the members of the town council. All the bunks were named after different primary colors, with Laurel leading the Green team, Mike leading the Red team, Taylor leading the Yellow team, and Anjay leading the Blue team. Each bunk would sleep together, work together, and compete as a team.
Every few days, the four teams would compete with one another in physical and mental challenges, such as building a working pipeline through an obstacle course or competing in a rock-hauling race. The results of the team challenge determined the team’s economic class for the next few days. The team in the first place was declared the upper-class, second place was the merchants, third place was the cooks, and last place was the laborers. This dictated what jobs each bunk would do for the following days and how much they would be paid in “buffalo nickels”: the upper class had no job and received $1.00/day, the merchants ran the town shops and received 50¢, the cooks made all the meals and did the dishes for 25¢, and the laborers did hard labor (such as filling pails of water, doing laundry, and cleaning outhouses) for 10¢. If this sounds weird to you, you’re not alone. Part of the criticism
Kid Nation received was aimed at how the show “indoctrinated the children into capitalism and classism”, with many a
thinkpiece posted on this topic.
Additionally, if the town as a whole reached a certain goal by the end of each challenge, the children were granted the choice between an item that they needed and an item that they wanted – and believe me, there’s
astounding entertainment value in watching children argue over whether they should get an old-fashioned television set or seven more outhouses (they only had one outhouse at the time… one… for forty kids). To get an idea of how difficult these town goals were, the town goal during the rock-hauling challenge was to collectively haul one ton of rocks. Obviously, the kids failed to haul over a ton of rocks. I mean, really, what did production expect? It’s
literally a ton of rocks.
And of course, because this is a reality television show, there is money on the line. While each kid was compensated for their time with $5,000, along with the opportunity to miss a month of school, there were also monetary prizes to be earned. Every three days, the town had a town meeting. During the town meetings, the kids had the opportunity to air their grievances to the community, but more importantly, the town council awarded one of the
participants a Gold Star. The Gold Star was worth $20,000, and the town council was tasked with choosing the kid that they felt earned it the most by meaningfully contributing to Bonanza City. Not only did the winner get the Gold Star, but they were also allowed to use the only phone in the town to call their parents. Also, the periodical town meeting was the only time the kids were given the chance to opt out of the experience and go home, which three kids did before the end of the season. In the show’s finale, the town council got to award three participants an additional $50,000 prize each.
Between challenges and town meetings, the kids would complete their jobs, shop at stores run by other kids, try to improve the town, and just generally goof off. At one point, the kids earn a fully stocked
arcade for their town after winning a showdown. There was even a “bar” that served root beer, where the kids could dance and drink soda all night. Basically, life in Bonanza City seemed to be all work
and all play.
On-Air Drama “I mean, look at Bush, he’s not smart at all, but he won the U.S. presidency two times in a row!” – Kelsey, age 11 While the format of
Kid Nation was not revolutionary, the age of the contestants and the contents of the show was. The stress and physical demands of the show proved too much for many of the children, with the first kid leaving during the first town meeting. First to go was Jimmy, the youngest contestant at 8 years old, who tearfully confesses in the first episode that he misses his parents and thinks he is too young to be on his own. He’s not the only one either; many of the children spend the first episode in tears as they express how homesick and overwhelmed they are.
Jimmy’s departure is just the first of many emotional and controversial moments for the show. The
second episode, titled “To Kill or Not to Kill”, centered on a debate between the kids about whether or not to kill some of their chickens to get more protein into their diet. This leads to a heated argument and a peaceful protest, with a group of kids locking themselves inside the chicken coop until the town council promises not to kill any of the chickens. Eventually, the children decide they need meat and kill two chickens. The kids butcher, de-feather, and cook the chickens themselves, leading to some pretty graphic footage. Of all the outrageous things the kids did on-air, killing the chickens seems to be one of the ones that drew the most controversy, with fans still expressing their shock years later. There was even a pretty decently upvoted
post about it on
TIL four years ago.
In episode four, the council tries to integrate religion into the town by instituting a mandatory church service, but the four council members are the only ones to show up for service. Throughout the entire episode, entitled “Bless Us and Keep Us Safe”, the kids have rather problematic (but entertaining) discussions about different religions, featuring a smattering of anti-semitism and religious discrimination. For the sake of decency, I am not going to give examples or repeat anything they said in this post, but if you just
need to know what was said, the episode can be found
here. The episode ends peacefully when Morgan invites all the kids to a
town bonfire where kids from different religions shared prayers together, showing more tolerance and compassion than I think most adults are capable of.
While the original town council members were chosen by the production team, the town is given the chance to hold
elections twice. In a shock to no one, participating in the democratic process proves to be as difficult for kids as it is for adults. The
first election gets incredibly heated as kids campaign for the privilege to be the leader of their bunk. One kid, Markelle, goes around town and rips up Taylor’s (the current leader of the Yellow district) campaign posters. This leads to a screaming match in the middle of town, leaving Taylor’s friend who made the posters in tears. Ultimately, Taylor’s political opponent Zach wins the election by exactly one vote after he successfully convinces one of Taylor’s close friends to vote against her. Thank goodness Zach won, or else we never would have gotten the gem that is 10-year-old Zach exclaiming
“Viva la Revolucion!”. The first election ends in absolute upset when Guylan defeats incumbent Mike for the position of leader of the Red district. Mike receives exactly one vote (his own), and watching the votes read out in real-time is a crazy experience – everyone is laughing in absolute shock.
Altogether, not only was the age of the contestants a subject of contention for audiences, but the content of the show was also seen as questionable by critics and viewers alike. From animal butchering to religious discrimination to political scandals,
Kid Nation really straddled the line of what was acceptable, both for television and for children.
The Aftermath “Deal with it!” – Taylor, age 10 Even before
Kid Nation premiered, critics and viewers were slating the controversial show. By the time the show finished airing, dozens of news outlets were chiming in to give their take on it, including
Variety, the
Los Angeles Times, the
Washington Post, and
Time. Viewers were
worried about how the children would deal with the stress, and whether or not they were pressured into participating by the lure of potential fame or by their parents for the sake of cash. As I mentioned earlier, people were also concerned that the children were being “indoctrinated into consumer culture” based on the class system utilized in Bonanza City. Despite all this, by the third episode, advertisers that had shied away from
Kid Nation due to its initial controversy decided to
purchase ad slots.
As you probably predicted,
Kid Nation became embroiled in lawsuits and legal battles. First of all, production had the kids sign a contract requiring them to be available for filming 24 hours a day for 40 days. While there are limits to how many hours a child can work in a day, there are exemptions for film and TV production that are regulated by the states. At the time, New Mexico had a law in place limiting children’s participation in film and television productions to nine hours a day. However, this law did not come into enforcement until a month after the filming for
Kid Nation was completed. New Mexico also had other general child-labor laws that limited children under 14 years old to a maximum number of hours per week or day unless otherwise approved by the state, but CBS did not obtain approval. Although there were adults on site with the children, the nature of how the adults supervised the children made it appear as though the kids were unlawfully engaged in labor under New Mexico law.
The producers
challenged the accusations of breaking child labor laws by declaring the set a summer camp instead of a place of employment. Even though the kids were compensated financially and filmed 24/7, production insisted that they were campers instead of reality show contestants. This claim was further questioned by the state of New Mexico, which had additional rules related to camp operations that were not followed by production. In the end, the production team for
Kid Nation did not face any legal repercussions for their usage of child labor, and the legal loophole the production used has since been
closed. Other investigative efforts into the show by the state of New Mexico were also dropped, with the Attorney General’s Office citing the lack of formal complaint or request for inquiry from any state agency.
Not only was the production team in hot water with the state of New Mexico, but they also found themselves
under investigation by the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists over whether its AFTRA National Code of Fair Practices for Network Television Broadcasting was violated. The organization raised questions about whether the reality show participants are more like subjects in a documentary or working actors. While the latter are covered by union rules that govern working hours and compensation, the former is not. The investigation went forward even though the Network Code on reality shows generally covers professional performers, not reality show participants. However, some parents on set on the final day of filming
accused the producers of feeding children lines, re-casting dialogue, and repeating scenes, all of which suggest the children functioned more like actors than documentary subjects. In response to the accusations, producer Tom Forman said the parents were observing routine “pickups” for scenes that may have been missed due to technical difficulties.
Along with legal challenges regarding child labor laws,
Kid Nation found itself as the subject of legal complaints from one of the
participant’s parents. Before filming, parents were required to sign a 22-page waiver that disavowed any responsibility on behalf of CBS or production for any harm experienced by the children on-set. In one infamous, unaired incident, several of the kids reportedly drank bleach on accident. One of the children, DK, age 14, was taken to the emergency room to be checked out before being returned to the set. Additionally, in an
interview with
The A.V. Club, 14-year-old Anjay revealed that he got so dehydrated from hiking the town that he had to go to EMS because he was throwing up. In another incident that actually made it on-air, 11-year-old Divad Miles received a grease burn on her face while cooking a meal. Her mother, Janis Miles, filed a complaint in June 2008, calling for an investigation into “abusive acts to minors and possible violations of child labor laws”. The complaint was investigated by the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office, which found no criminal wrongdoing on behalf of the production company or CBS.
It should be noted that in interviews with four of the participants by Los Angeles Times reporter Maria Elena Fernandez, all the children said that even though they worked harder than they ever had in their lives, they would still willingly repeat the experience. Astutely, Fernandez noted in one of her
articles that “the children were never as autonomous or self-reliant as the publicity indicated and the threatened legal investigations by the state of New Mexico never took off”. Despite all the negative press and lawsuits, the show did not live up to its pre-premiere promises or its controversies.
Where Are They Now? “I just hope we don’t end up like the Donner party, eating our own people.” – Anjay, age 12 Years passed, and fans like myself were dying to know how the children of
Kid Nation turned out. In 2014, our insane wishes for resolution began to be fulfilled, with the now-adults of
Kid Nation turning to the internet and the media to tell their stories.
One of the first to do so was Michael, who did an
AMA on
IAmA in 2014. Needless to say, fans like myself flooded the AMA with tons of questions and felt our morbid curiosity being satisfied. Michael confirmed many behind-the-scenes rumors and revealed some information previously unknown to fans, such as hook-ups occurring between contestants, Sophia stealing a phone from a crew member to call home, and Jared constantly getting into fights with other kids. He attested that on one hand, there were always adults present off-camera during the production (such as cameramen, producers, a medic, and a child psychologist), but on the other hand, the children did do almost everything themselves. Michael also said that he would be willing to do a “where are they now?”-style sequel to
Kid Nation.
When
Kid Nation experienced revitalized interest during 2020,
The A.V. Club took advantage of the moment to interview several contestants for a “where are they now?”-style
article, including Laurel, Anjay, and Olivia. In the interview, the former participants said that much of the show as presented on television was dramatized. They stated that production set up certain children like Olivia and Greg as “stock villains”, despite this not being the case behind the scenes. Also, Anjay confirmed the highly-publicized story about DK accidentally drinking bleach and explained that this was the result of a bottle of bleach being mistaken for a bottle of seltzer water that they had for flavoring drinks in the town store. Anjay said that the medical staff immediately treated DK and he returned to the set shortly afterward. By far the most interesting piece of information to come out of the interviews, though, is the existence of an unaired episode where kids discussed politics (in a similar vein as the religion episode), which was deemed too controversial to air. Considering the context of the Bush administration and the Iraq war, it is understandable why such an episode might be deemed contentious. However, the logic of this decision has done nothing to quell my and other fans’ desire to see the unaired episode, if only to find out where exactly the production team chose to draw the line after
all this *gestures broadly*.
In 2020, YouTuber JonTron, also known as Jon Jafari,
interviewed Jimmy, the first child to leave
Kid Nation. During his interview, Jimmy criticized the harsh conditions that the production team forced the children to suffer through, such as making them cook their own food and wash their dishes, the poor sleeping conditions (the children slept on the floor), and the poor sanitary conditions (here’s your reminder of the 1 outhouse: 40 kids ratio… also the kids were not able to shower until after the first challenge). Additionally, Jimmy confirmed that on two separate occasions, ambulances had to be called to the set to take children to the emergency room.
Conclusion: The Kids Are Alright - No Really, I Mean It “My ego pretty much just got like eaten, digested, and crapped out by a coyote, torn apart by vultures, and tossed off a cliff.” – Mike, age 11 As I mentioned at the beginning of this write-up,
Kid Nation never got a second season. The show was canceled due to its highly questionable legality and the ton of controversy it garnered. This is not to mention poor audience ratings and the fact that the legal loophole in New Mexico was closed. Since its original run on CBS,
Kid Nation has basically been treated as if it's radioactive. The show is nearly impossible to find online because most streaming companies refuse to host the series. Previously, a user on YouTube had uploaded all 13 episodes to the site for viewers to watch in a convenient playlist, but the playlist was recently deleted. Right now, the only place you can find
Kid Nation is on
Vimeo.
The kids from
Kid Nation sincerely do not seem traumatized by their experience, and in fact, most of them actually say they cherish the memory of working on the show. Notably, Laurel called
Kid Nation the “ultimate best experience of [her] life” – a sentiment that was also echoed in Michael’s AMA. On the other hand, the show’s host,
Jonathan Karsh, has seemingly been unable to find any other television host jobs since his stint on
Kid Nation.
Even though
Kid Nation was canceled due to backlash from critics and viewers, the show has still managed to situate itself as a cult TV series. It even occasionally makes its way back into popular culture, as seen in 2020. A small, semi-active
subreddit dedicated to the show still exists, and YouTubers constantly post videos reacting to the conditions and situations that the participants lived through. For trashy reality TV fanatics like me,
Kid Nation remains to be a masterclass in entertainment and social commentary as told by kids, albeit with a sketchy production team and questionable conditions.
Ultimately, whether or not
Kid Nation was really as abusive and controversial as people claimed is still up for debate. In my opinion, as with most things, I think the truth lies somewhere in the middle. At the very least, the kids are alright.

2023.03.31 01:52 reweeballin24 First Infinite Rank
| I'm still in disbelief I made Infinite last night, as I was no where close in previous seasons, peaking around Rank 70. Wanted to share some insight to other players hoping to reach Infinite this season and onward. Ease to the Grind I don't think I would have grinned to Infinite if it wasn't to the +5 rank each time you break into a new tier. I felt like it saved me a lot of time and incentivized me to try and see if I can reach each tier. Deck I used to reach Infinite Decklist and Tips As I don't have Shuri, I decided to try this deck out and found it consistent and flexile, with multiple win conditions. - Attune-X - named the deck this as a Turn 4-5 combo of Attuma followed by Professor X to lock down a lane and prevent Attuma from being destroyed. Attuma could also be played into Armor as well.
- Klaw works well with Professor X, as long as Professor X is played in the middle or right hand columns, you can play Klaw to the left of Professor X to win a lane if you are behind. I think Klaw was the main reason to my 4 and 8 cube wins, as the player saw I was losing the Professor X lane and didn't think I had an out for that. Klaw also helps out with a lane closed by Storm.
- Starting turns I try to get the point lead so I have turn priority. play either 1- Sunspot 2-ArmoLizard 3-Storm in the same lanes; with Zero -> Titania or Lizard as a backup.
- I try to be aheads in points so I can Armor, Storm, or Cosmo a lane to prevent Destroy, Galactus, or On Reveal Decks from gaining any momentum.
- By turn 5, you should have an idea of how you will win the game, either by using Professor X to win you a lane or combo it with Klaw on Turn 6, or just using brute strength with Red Skull or Destroyer to win you games.
- Zero can negate Red Skull and Destroyer, but as I try to play Zero early, I seldom played it that way. Destroyer is really easy to get onto the field in this deck as I try to position my previous turns where I play Destroyer on my Cosmo, or I played Destroyer but my other cards are protected by my Armor or Professor X. Throw in that other players on the ladder run Cosmo and Armor it makes it much easier to play without worry.
- Red Skull is just a good card in general, at worse 5 cost, 9 power, but helps me contest or win lanes in the end game.
Matchups - Vs Shuri - While possible to win it struggles against Shuri decks. Even if I Storm a lane having a 26 Red Skull and 26 Taskmaster is hard to contain across the two other lanes. There's a lot of guess work in the end game, trying to predict correctly in stopping Taskmaster with Cosmo, or guessing correctly in shutting down a lane with Professor X while they play Taskmaster on the other.
- Vs Doctor Doom - Sometimes shutting down a lane with Storm is not enough, even with a Sunspot or other cards sharing that lane. The games I lost against Doctor Doom were against Doctor Doom paired with a Patriot/Blue Marvel boost, or by a Wave or Electro Combo to get Doctor Doom early and then proc his On Reveal Again with Odin. In these matchups I need to make sure that I have more than at least 10 Power in a Storm lane to make sure I win that lane against two Doombots (5+5) assuming they don't have other boosting cards on the field like Patriot, Blue Marvel, Mystique.
- Vs Galactus/Destroy - Galactus and Destroy decks should be easy to read, you just need Storm, Cosmo, or Professor X to be utilized correctly to prevent Galactus from activating his ability
- Vs Thanos - This deck matched up very well against the multiple variants of Thanos deck, whether it was Destroy or Lockjaw. Cosmo, Storm, Professor X, and Armor help get this archetype under control, and you can just win with more points with DestroyeRed Skull.

Letters of Rec - Social Studies Teacher (7/10) : Although we had a close relationship I found out later that his letter was essentially a rehash of my resume with some generic descriptions of how I did in his class.
- Physics Teacher (7/10) : Same thing with my scocial studies teacher. I'm pretty sure every teacher at my school just writes overall positive but generic letters due to how large my school is. Pain
- Lead Esports manager for Rocket League (100/10): I worked with him for nearly 2 years now and we are very close. I know his letter is very strong because he let me see it lol
Interviews - MIT (7/10) - Princeton (10/10) - Stanford (10/10) - Cornell (8/10) - Duke (5/10) 💀

2023.03.31 00:35 shining_willy Minor obstacles with attiny85 digispark, tailoring code and bootloading micronucleus to run stripped down mouse-jiggler project
Here is the project github (Mouse Whisperer - a small development kit to act as a mouse-jiggler to draw simple circles while youre away (provided code in .h file defines cursor path)
The project is based on these components:
- ATtiny85 MCU
- 8KB Flash, 512B EEPROM, 512B SRAM
Here is the digispark I'm using which is 8KB Flash (approx 6KB after bootloader)
The github also calls for these additional components that I am trying to leave out:
- WS2812E RGB addressable LED for status indication
- TTP223 based touch sensor for switching it ON and OFF
I figure I can just plug it in when I want to use it, remove when I don't, and I don't need RGB addressable LED either. The product I'm using does have two separate LEDs already, one green one red. But that may be way beyond my limited abilities to try and address at this stage anyway
Here is the schematic for the attiny85 stick - I'm intending to include the MCU and ISP header, the USB connector, and ignoring the LED strip, Power LED, and USERESET Button (DNS)
The attiny firmware can be found here, which includes the lib, scripts and src files and one for vs code which includes 10 line file,
extensions.json The src file contains effects, circle.h and main.cpp which follows:
I am tempted to remove
the whole effects folder, which only seems to hold functionality for the LED and on/off touch sensor (again hoping one day I can just edit the main.ccp file to effect the two LEDs present on the digispark drive already).
As for editing the main src to remove the at this point extraneous LED and touch sensor commands I could only remove some lines (so if someone sees this, has experience with c++ and the digistump LED, and can advise me on adding commands for that, I will be forever in your debt)
Here is the unedited c++ code
from the main src file:
#include #include "circle.h" const int RADIUS_FACTOR = 3; #ifdef LIGHT_WS2812_AVR #include #define BRT_FACTOR 3 #define MAX_BRT ((0xFF >> BRT_FACTOR)-1) cRGB RGB_COLOR_GREEN = {MAX_BRT, 0, 0}; cRGB RGB_COLOR_WHITE = {MAX_BRT, MAX_BRT, MAX_BRT}; cRGB RGB_COLOR_BLACK = {0, 0, 0}; cRGB RGB_COLOR_BLUE = {0, 0, MAX_BRT}; cRGB RGB_COLOR_RED = {0, MAX_BRT, 0}; cRGB leds[NUM_PIXELS]; #include "effects/rainbowled.h" RainBowLed effect(BRT_FACTOR, NUM_PIXELS, leds); #endif void setup() { #ifdef PIN_BTN_1 pinMode(PIN_BTN_1, INPUT); #endif DigiMouse.begin(); } #ifndef PIN_BTN_STICKY uint8_t btn_1_state = HIGH; #endif uint8_t enabled_state = true; uint32_t seq = 0; void update_visual() { #ifdef LIGHT_WS2812_AVR if (enabled_state) { // uint8_t brightness = (abs(SIN(seq)) * MAX_BRT) >> 10; // for (uint8_t i = 0; i < NUM_PIXELS; i++) // { // leds[i] = (seq % NUM_PIXELS) == i ? (cRGB) {brightness, 0, 0} : RGB_COLOR_BLACK; // } ws2812_setleds(leds, NUM_PIXELS); effect.loop(); } else { for (uint8_t i = 0; i < NUM_PIXELS; i++) { leds[i] = (seq % NUM_PIXELS) == i ? (cRGB) {0, MAX_BRT >> 1, 0} : RGB_COLOR_BLACK; } ws2812_setleds(leds, NUM_PIXELS); } #endif } int16_t x0 = 0; int16_t y0 = 0; void loop() { #ifdef PIN_BTN_1 uint8_t btn_state = digitalRead(PIN_BTN_1); #ifdef PIN_BTN_STICKY enabled_state = btn_state; #else if (btn_state != btn_1_state) { if (btn_1_state == LOW) { enabled_state = !enabled_state; } btn_1_state = btn_state; } #endif #endif if (enabled_state) { seq++; int16_t x = COS(seq) >> RADIUS_FACTOR; int16_t y = SIN(seq) >> RADIUS_FACTOR; if ((x != x0) (y != y0)) { // DigiMouse.setButtons(MOUSEBTN_LEFT_MASK); // DigiMouse.delay(100); if (x != x0) DigiMouse.moveX(x0 - x); if (y != y0) DigiMouse.moveY(y0 - y); // DigiMouse.setButtons(0); DigiMouse.delay(10); // DigiMouse.rightClick(); // DigiMouse.delay(100); x0 = x; y0 = y; } } update_visual(); }
And here is the same main source file in c++ after I tried to edit out (essentially I removed the #include directives pointing to the effects folder and such, and anything else that seemed to reference RGB) the additional functions:
#include #include "circle.h" const int RADIUS_FACTOR = 3; #ifdef PIN_BTN_1 pinMode(PIN_BTN_1, INPUT); #endif DigiMouse.begin(); } #ifndef PIN_BTN_STICKY uint8_t btn_1_state = HIGH; #endif if (enabled_state) { seq++; int16_t x = COS(seq) >> RADIUS_FACTOR; int16_t y = SIN(seq) >> RADIUS_FACTOR; if ((x != x0) (y != y0)) { // DigiMouse.setButtons(MOUSEBTN_LEFT_MASK); // DigiMouse.delay(100); if (x != x0) DigiMouse.moveX(x0 - x); if (y != y0) DigiMouse.moveY(y0 - y); // DigiMouse.setButtons(0); DigiMouse.delay(10); // DigiMouse.rightClick(); // DigiMouse.delay(100); x0 = x; y0 = y; } } update_visual(); }
I'm hoping I can
remove the whole effects folder because I don't know the first thing about trying to edit this for the two LED options on the digistump already (any experience in that area would be great)
and also this lib folder for the WS2812e light. I'm also doing all this on my RHEL 9 Fedora-based distro if that matters.
The Mouse Whisperer is based on the
Micronucleos bootloader, and so my next step is to load the arduino onto the digispark. Does this mean that micronucleous would be the sketch? or do I load the arduino onto the stump
and then I bootload the micronucleos?
Wha
t micronucleus-cli zip should I download for an RHEL fedora build? I chose the x86_64-Linux configuration but there are several more (including armel/armef/64-dawin etc.)
I'm using PlatformIO on vscode to load the files, but do I need or should I consider the arduino IDE to bootload the stump in the first place? I do have both that and the Arduino-cli preloaded on the desktop as well.
Hope this is enough information for the mods, I strongly plead for all suggestions, advice and especially criticisms (constructive criticism preferred) thanks!

2023.03.31 00:34 Defiant-Animator-471 X windows problem with NetBSD 9.3 / macppc
Hello, I have NetBSD 9.3 running on a Blue and White G3. I cannot get X windows to function.
It's complaining about LVDS. And I don't think I'm even using LVDS (?) as I'm using a single external monitor, a V7 model. Card is ATI Rage 128 (stock vid card for this mac.) Here's the log file and xorg.conf from netbsd:

Bio: Orkira Illdrex is a gold dragonborn from the Nentir Vale, where she grew up nurturing a love of healing and fire. Between a strange life filled with monsters, Gods, time and multiplanar travel, death, the destruction of worlds and the saving of others, Orkira has survived and adapted to deal with any situation with a motto of 'One problem at a time.'
Listen to "One Problem at a Time," the official Bardic Inspiration song for Orkira, here.
Basic Attack: Burning Hands — Orkira leaps to a random enemy and raises her hands, causing fire to erupt from the tips of her claws in a small area of effect cone.
- Base Attack Type: Magical
- Base Attack Speed: 5 seconds
- Self-DPS Buff: 2.26e24%
Ultimate: Radiance of the Phoenix — Orkira flies up over the enemies, grasping The Domain of the Phoenix and uttering a prayer, summoning The Phoenix to rain Elemental Fire down upon the battlefield. This deals damage over time and increases the Elemental Fire stacks of affected enemies by 1 every 2 seconds for 10 seconds.
- Base Ultimate Cooldown Time: 320 seconds
Interesting Abilities
Lesser Restoration: Orkira heals all non-adjacent damaged Champions.
- 4,078 after upgrades; Supported by an Item & Feats
Elemental Fire: Whenever Orkira damages an enemy, they receive one stack of Elemental Fire, taking 10% of Orkira's damage per second for 15 seconds and receiving 100% additional damage from all attacks. This ability stacks up to 10 times (additively) and attempting to add another stack will reset the cooldown of all stacks. Buffs to this ability increase only the damage debuff bonus (not the damage over time).
- 8.19e05% after upgrades; Supported by an Item & Feats
Gaar's Note: This is her debuff and it can get really strong thanks to Healing Flame.
Healing Flame: Increase the effect of Elemental Fire by 100% for each order of magnitude worth of effective healing done with Lesser Restoration on the current run. Buffs apply to the post-stack value.
- 1,600% after upgrades; Supported by an Item & Feats
Gaar's Note: This is the ability that creates Orkira Stacking. After reaching softcap, or the highest place you can upgrade your Champs to, return to area 1 and build a formation specifically that creates the most healing possible from Orkira onto a target (usually Artemis) and rack up a serious debuff value before switching back to a pushing formation and turning auto-progress back on.
Self Sacrifice: If a Champion Orkira is able to heal (i.e. non-adjacent) is about to take a killing blow, Orkira instantly swaps formation slots with that Champion for 10 seconds and takes the hit for them. During this time Orkira's overwhelm point is set to twice the other Champion's and neither Orkira nor the other Champion can be moved, removed, or swapped out; after the time expires they swap back regardless of whether Orkira and/or the other Champion died during the time. This effect can only occur once every 60 seconds.
Global DPS Buff: 3.68e06%
Specializations
Breath of the Phoenix: Increase the size of Orkira's Burning Hands area of effect cone and have Elemental Fire apply two stacks instead of one.
Gaar's Note: This stacks up her debuff faster.
Tailfeather of the Phoenix: Increase the effect of Lesser Restoration by 100%. Lesser Restoration will now "heal" undamaged Champions and Healing Flame will count 1% of this non-effective healing as well.
Gaar's Note: This is the best choice as it enables the aforementioned Orkira Stacking.

Formation & Mission Information
Once you complete the first mission, three Variants and a Free Play show up. It uses a formation that holds 10 Champions. It has a Champ-specific format that I've done my best to re-create below.

New Player Formation & Specializations:
While I recommend learning to build your own formations, here's a set of starter formations for brand new players to use while they get the hang of things. Anyone with other options should check that link for how to figure out how to make the best of them. You can also ask for help in the #formations channel in the official Discord.
Back Column | 4th Column | 3rd Column | 2nd Column | Front Column |
| Minsc - Humanoids | | Bruenor - Battle Master | |
NA | | Calliope - College of Valor | | Nayeli - Oath of Devotion |
Asharra - Dwarves & Elves | | Celeste - Life Domain
| Hitch - Charismatic | | Jarlaxle - Leader of Bregan D'aerthe | |
| | | | NA |
This formation is for the first couple of runs where you're just not going to get enough Gold to get everyone on the field, let alone level people up into their power curves. At this point, Jarlaxle is focusing on being your Primary DPS while everyone else is set up to support him.
The following formation is for once your Hitch starts doing more damage than your Jarlaxle. You can find this out by pulling Asharra out of the formation and swapping Jarlaxle and Hitch around to see whose damage is better. If Hitch is higher, next run change Asharra's Spec to buff Hitch instead.
Back Column | 4th Column | 3rd Column | 2nd Column | Front Column |
| Jarlaxle - Leader of Bregan D'aerthe | | Bruenor - Battle Master | |
Makos - Dark Blessing | | Calliope - College of Valor | | Nayeli - Oath of Devotion |
Minsc - Humanoids | | Celeste - Life Domain
| Asharra - (Swap) | | Hitch - Charismatic | |
| | | | Tyril - Wild Shape |
This formation should get you through the Event as a new player. If you have other options or think a different DPS is geared better, try it out and see what happens! Swapping DPS around like this can help you figure out what works best for you with your specific items.
These are the rough Favor values you need to reach to make a Variant say Difficulty: Easy. Keep in mind that this is just a generic rating system and some Variants may be harder than others, even with Favor in this range.
Variant | Favor Level (Normal) | Favor Level (Scientific Notation) |
75 | 20,000 | ~2e04 |
125 | 15,000,000 | ~1.5e07 |
175 | 150,000,000 | ~1.5e08 |
Initial Adventure: The Endless War (Orkira)
Cost: 25 Bouquets
Complete: Level 50
Reward: Orkira + whatever Lathander's Favor you earned
Info: No restrictions.
First Variant: Wise Warriors Wait
Cost: 250 Bouquets
Complete: Area 75
Reward: Gold Orkira Chest & whatever Lathander's Favor you earned
Info: Only Champions with a WIS score of 13 or higher can be used. Enemies move 100% faster. Every 25 areas, that speed boost is increased by 100% (additively).
Gaar's Notes: Enemies gotta go fast! At least you only have to go 75 levels here. You're gonna be a bit restricted as a new player with your options.
Second Variant: Volo's Guide to Orkira
Cost: 625 Bouquets
Complete: Area 125
Reward: Gold Orkira Chest & whatever Lathander's Favor you earned
Info: Orkira starts in the formation and can't be moved or removed (save for her ultimate, of course). Volo joins the formation and catalogues Orkira's unique capabilities. - Volo forgot to mention that he angered a swarm of spined devils before joining us. They appear in each area and deal 300% additional damage.
Gaar's Notes: So you're going to be down one formation slot and you have to deal with Spined Devils. Make sure to have the Favor shown in the chart above before starting or it may be a bit rough.
Third Variant: Flayer Whispers
Cost: 1,250 Bouquets
Complete: Area 175
Reward: Gold Orkira Chest & whatever Lathander's Favor you earned
Info: Armored Mind Flayer Guards appear in each area. The Elder Brain slowly drives your Champions mad. When a Champion gets a killing blow, they gain 5-10 stacks of a "Whispers" debuff. When they reach 100+ stacks, they are stunned for 15 seconds. Mind Flayers and the Elder Brain all deal 100% additional damage.
Gaar's Notes: This is a neat variant, but obviously it can be challenging due to the stun. It will only really affect your Primary DPS as you near your wall, but that means 15 seconds of your Tanks having to survive before they come back online. As always, make sure you have the Favor shown in the chart above before attempting and you should be OK. For the armored Mind Flayers, and for the Elder Brain, using a Primary DPS that has multi-attack (Hitch, Asharra, etc.) helps a lot.
Free Play
Cost: 500 - 2500 Bouquets (Cost scales based on how many you do to a max of 2500)
Complete: Area 50 to earn a random Orkira chest
Reward: See above + whatever Lathander's Favor you earned
Info: No restrictions.
Achievements
Gaar's Note: All of these achievements can be earned at any time, not just during their Event, except where noted.
Recruit Orkira - 1%
Recruit Orkira, the Dragonborn Cleric
Mission Complete - 1%
Complete all three variants of the "The Endless War (Orkira)" adventure. (This achievement can be earned via Time Gates.)
Problem Solved - 1%
Obtain a piece of gear for each of Orkira's six equipment slots. (Event Champ gear does not come from regular SilveGold Chests. You can earn Event Champ gear from their specific Event Chests, Time Gates, qualifying Patron Chests, and other limited-time Chests as noted.)
One Problem At a Time - 1%
Complete area 175 in any "The Endless War" free play. (This achievement can only be earned during the Greengrass Event, but it can be earned in any Champion's free play.)
Noble Sacrifice - 1%
Have Orkira trigger Self Sacrifice and survive the full duration
Gaar's Note: This is pretty straightforward. Just need to find a place where your tank only just barely dies, let Orkira save them, then keep her alive via Ultimates or waveclear.

2023.03.30 23:30 maximusaemilius Human women are spaceorcs
Sunny walked beside Adam, like she always did, as he paced through the cargo bay, checking off shipping manifests on his clipboard, checking and rechecking the equipment they would need for re-supply. They had stopped on the Tesraki home world for a much-needed rest and some recuperation. They would be here a couple days, so shore leave was in order for a night or two, a prospect the entire group was excited about, considering what the Tesraki home world had become.
If the Tesraki and humans had one thing in common, it was their desire for a good time.
It had probably been a horrible idea to introduce the Tesraki to the idea of gambling and casinos.
Honestly it had probably been a bad idea to introduce the Tesraki to capitalism as it was, since they took to the idea like fish to water, but mistakes had been made and there was no turning back. On the coattails of that debacle, the Tesrakis home world had quickly transformed itself into the Vegas of the galaxy, knowing, in true business fashion, that humans couldn't resist debauchery and a good time. The sheer amount of revenue and inherent benefits that had come to them simply by way of human tourism had been astonishing, raising their planetary gross income to 7% more than any other planet in the Galactic Assembly.
Commander Vir paused beside another pallet of cargo.
"Hey, SUNNY! SUNNY!! Sunny turned her head in a wide arc, searching for the voice and found a group of women standing next to one of the shuttle doors, each waving at her.
She left Commander Vir out of curiosity and walked over.
Dr. Katie was there with a few women from engineering and a couple female marines. Maverick, a short female marine with buzzed blond hair and grey blue eyes greeted Sunny with a wolfish grin.
'Bout time ya big bug! I've been yelling at you for half a minute." Sunny looked around the circle. It was strange seeing the marines in anything other than their usual uniforms. Maverick was wearing camouflage cargo pants, a black tank top and a pair of blue tinted sunglasses, perched atop her short blond hair. Dr. Katie wore a form fitting black dress and pointy red shoes. Another marine had her warm strawberry blond hair curled down past her shoulders.
"Where are you guys going?" Sunny wondered.
"Out on the town, where else? A couple of us decided to get together and go get wasted, or whatever trouble we can get into, maybe lose some money. We don't know, yet." Sunny glanced back towards where the Commander was standing, still going through inventory.
"Oh, well I don't know if WE were-" "Oh come on, the two of you hang out all the time. I think it's about time you got out more, besides we're prettier." The group laughed. Dr Katie flipped her hair and grinned at Maverick,
"Well, except for Maverick, but we had to have an ugly one to make the rest of us look better." Maverick snorted and waved a hand,
"Are you kidding me?" She motioned seductively,
"Nothing can top 'this'." "A sack of lard," More laughter.
"Keep laughing ladies. You're just jealous of my stunning physique. As I was saying though, seriously Sunny, you need to get out. The Commander has work to get done anyway and he's going to be boring for the next 48 hours." Sunny wavered on the edge of indecision, as a pair of boots thudded on the ground next to her.
"What are you jackals trying to get my Sunny into?" Katie linked an arm through one of Sunny's lower two arms,
"Girls night, and YOU aren't invited." "Yeah, only women or those who identify as such are allowed'" One of the engineers piped up from the back.
Commander Vir snorted,
*"Y'all better be glad I don't identify as a woman."
Striking a quick pose and flipping imaginary hair over his shoulder,
*
Because I'd be the prettiest." "Yes, a beautiful monkey, sir." Jackie tilted her head,
"You know, now that I think about it probably not the prettiest, or the smartest, or even the strongest. Bet Mav could crush you with her thighs if she wanted to, pop your head like a melon." He raised an eyebrow,
"As fun as THAT sounds, I am afraid you might be right. You all are too much for my delicate sensibilities. I was actually coming over here to give you the pre-leave lecture." He cleared his throat,
"Don't get pregnant, don't get anyone pregnant, don't sell your body for money, don't accept drinks from strangers, any bail, ransom, or parking tickets will be paid out of your monthly wages. Keep all debauchery, drunkenness, fighting and gambling to a minimum, and please for the love of Jupiter, try not to kill anyone." "Yes sir, I will try very hard not to get anyone pregnant." There was laughter about the group.
The commander raised a hand,
"It is 4023, so I am SURE you could find a way." "What if I get kidnapped Commander, can I hurt them then?" "You wouldn't need to hurt them Jackie. They would bring you back and I would make them pay ME ransom to take you back," He tucked the clipboard under his arm and looked at Sunny.
"Good luck with this group. Don't die, and don't kill anyone." ”Oh, I see how it is, so nothing about that pregnancy stuff for me?” Sunny teased and playfully nudged the Commander in the side with two of her arms.
**
”Oh of course… yeah… I mean… you know… You know after you said no to Moss… I mean I just assumed you and… I will just stop talking now…” The girls where openly giggling then.
”By all means Commander, go on!” ”No, you girls go have fun, I am fine Sunny. Enjoy the evening!” She hadn't exactly decided to go with them just yet, but it appeared as if that decision had been made for her. She waved a hand at the Commander who turned back to his earlier duties as the group of marines, engineers and one doctor stepped their way into the small shuttle. The strawberry blonde CJ was a passable pilot and took them down through the clouds with a loud whoop. Sunny's stomach flew into her face, reminding her rather unpleasantly of what she had had for breakfast.
Mav sat next to Katie on the opposite side and over the roaring of entrance into the atmosphere Sunny heard bits of conversation.
"I hate it when people assume that you have to choose one or the other. It's the 41st century, if I want to play with big guns and explosives AND get my nails done afterwards, I am going to damn well do it. You'd have to be stupid to turn down either option, so I say, best of both worlds." Katie raised an eyebrow.
The way the light cut across Maverick's arms and shoulders made it pretty clear she spent a good portion of her time at the gym.
Dr. Katie threw a strand of hair over her shoulder,
"Ok, yes I agree, but also at least be careful when you do that sort of thing. I have been a doctor long enough to know what degloving skin looks like, and yes it is exactly how it sounds. So please for the love of all that is holy BE CAREFUL. Personally, just give me a good book and a bag of chips and I'm set for the afternoon." "What genre?" "Meh, whatever strikes my fancy. Mostly fantasy if I am being honest, sometimes romance hits the spot, but other times I can do for a western. It just depends on the day." Sunny tilted her head, listening intently. While she had spent a lot of time with the marines, she had never actually gotten to know them on a personal level and she barely knew the name of the women from the engineering and science departments.
If she was being honest, she didn't really have much of a relationship with anyone other than the Commander, especially not women.
She never really had, considering her history with her mother.
She grew up spending most of her time with her brother and her father and eventually she had become such good friends with Adam that she had become rather short sighted with her other options aboard the crew. To be honest though, it didn't much matter on her home world, so she couldn't imagine that it would be much different here.
She couldn't help but pipe in on the subject of weapons, which turned into good natured banter between her and Mav, who had some pretty strong opinions about the nature of projectile vs energy weapons. Though when it came to other subjects, she was a bit lost. The humans were an interesting race in that they enjoyed both their war and their relaxation in equal measure, so the topics they were discussing went heavily over Sunny's head. ** She got involved in a couple of conversations she probably could have done without. Humans were gross no matter which group of them you talked to. The only difference was this group of humans was more willing to share.**
The discussion on how to properly scratch a nipple in public was followed by a debate that included, but was not limited to, scratching in other unmentionable places, random overgrown hairs, body fluids, body smells and on and on.
Sunny turned the conversation back to music, something she was comfortable with. Mav liked punk, alternative, and hard rock, Dr. Katie was ok with anything as long as it was catchy. Jackie, the engineer, had a thing for country music, and CJ was some strange mix between classical and R&B it just depended on the day. The other women chimed in with their favorites and soon all genres were accounted for.
They were all laughing about something by the time they hit planet side and Sunny stepped from the shuttle, eyes wide as she turned in a circle, taking in the bright neon lights and a million billboards shamelessly advertising for human tourists.
Billboards hundreds of feet across showing pictures of half-naked models, both men and women, rose high into the sky.
The one sad thing about the future was that it hadn't stopped the objectification of the human body, but had simply equalized the amount of objectification between the sexes, men and women in equal measure, because it was always easier to sell a product when you were really just selling sex instead.
The Terasaki certainly had no moral qualms about doing it either. It wasn't even their species after all.
CJ clapped her hands together, throwing her strawberry blond curls over one shoulder,
"Alright, we need a game plan." Mav eyed one of the billboards,
"How about we start there?" She pointed. The group of them turned to find an advertisement for nightly ring fighting,
"It's just like what I was saying, gotta go see someone get fucked up before I get my nails done, that's just how things should be. Plus, twenty bucks says there will be alcohol for those of you who are less interested." "Hey, I am down for anything as long as I get a massage later." Mav nodded,
"Deal, I get to watch someone get the snot beaten out of them and you can get wasted. Everyone wins." Sunny wasn't entirely sure what she had expected, but she liked what she got. Sunny, Mav and CJ got seats just outside the ring while Jackie, Katie and a few others stormed the bar. Turns out CJ had a thing for yelling at the referee. Mav didn't care what happened, just as long as someone was getting punched in the face and Sunny, well Sunny loved it, yelling and screaming with the rest of the humans as Drev and Humans alike beat the pulp out of each other.
Halfway through the night Sunny was interrupted,
"Hey, HEY, Scarab." Sunny turned around to find a large human looking at her from the aisle,
"Why don't you go stand with the rest of the Drev. I reserved these seats." Sunny looked down at him,
"Uh... yeah, there's room." "Let me talk slow since you don't seem to speak good human, but you're big and I don't want your arms getting in the way of my view so why don't you get lost you dumb four armed bug?” Sunny was ready to ignore him, but before she knew what was going on Mav and CJ were standing in front of her arms crossed,
"The hell you say, you DON'T talk to our friend, bitch." The guy looked a bit nonplussed, but straightened himself up,
"I told her to go sit with the other Drev." "I didn't know these seats were segregated." Mav shot back,
"But if that's the case, I think idiots are seated on the other side." "Are you fucking kidding me?" "No, I'm not. Now either you can back up, or I can back you up." Mav was right in his face now, but CJ put a hand on her arm warningly. It was human culture that the first person who threw a punch, whether man or woman, was opening up to a fair beating.
Sunny stood from her seat looming a good foot to two over her short companions glowering down at the man. She didn't say anything. The man backed up a few steps.
"Aww... little bitch gonna cry to mommie," Mav taunted, much to the chagrin of CJ.
The guy's face turn beet red,
"If you weren't-." "Here let me finish-" CJ grabbed Mav by the arm and pushed her back to her seat,
"Down Mav." She turned her eyes back to the guy.
"Look Imma make this as clear as I can. We aren't moving, so either you get over it and take a seat or you get the hell out. Pick your poison." The guy took his seat and shut up. Sunny couldn't help making a point to step in front of him a few times, blocking his view with her bulk. Mav got a kick out of her pettiness, but eventually they left to find Jackie, Katie and the others at the bar.
Just a few drinks in and already they were coming up with stupid dance moves. Grabbing them, they moved out of the bar and onto the street. It was leaning towards late evening, but they managed to get themselves checked into a nice little spa, hunched between two buildings, a bit out of the way and pushed back from the rest of civilization.
Everything going on here was pretty foreign to Sunny. The Drev had nothing comparable in their culture to this practice, and she watched in confusion as the other humans took their seats at strange tables. Mav was "getting her nails done," pointing out that there was nothing better than a hand massage and anyone who disagreed could go right ahead and fight her. Katie had her feet soaking in a pool of hot water, while Jackie lay on her stomach on a strange flat table, a towel wrapped around her curly dark hair obscuring her face, while her dark skin shone in the delicate white light overhead.
Water trickled somewhere in the distance, and the entire room was done in shades of white and pastel giving it a very un-Drev aesthetic.
It was an extreme 180 from the earlier venue and Sunny wasn't entirely sure how to behave. Eventually, someone came to her rescue, as she was ordered to take a seat and relax by CJ, who determined she was in for a treat. Sunny had to admit the warm towel around her neck was nice and she hummed softly as her feet soaked in a pool of water. The human that walked in looked a little surprised to see her, but shrugged and got to work. It took a little more elbow grease to get through Sunny's tough hide, but when they managed it Sunny had to admit it was probably the best feeling she had ever experienced... in pretty much ever.
Mav snickered, snapping a picture of the big blue Drev, face covered in a green mask, cucumbers over her eyes, sprawled in a chair as one person messaged her huge neck muscles, one worked on the claws of her left upper hand, and another knelt at her feet.
Sunny was quite displeased when her time was up. She needed about an hour more work on her shoulder muscles and at least another ten minutes on each of her hands, but her time was up so they paid, leaving just as a few familiar faces walked in. Another group of tipsy marines, who made it very clear that they intended to get their feet done while they were here, were filing in.
Sunny found the image somewhat amusing, but was glad to see they were having fun and agreed with their decision.
She had a new favorite pastime now and understood why they had chosen it. With that amazing ritual behind them, they went out to eat. The humans ordered a round of drinks and Sunny asked for some water, not actually capable of getting drunk in the same way that humans did. The berries and fruit that her species ate were often fermented when preserved, giving her species an extreme tolerance to ethanol, so much so that it wasn't even worth trying to get drunk since you would likely die of heightened liquid consumption before actually reaching the point of intoxication.
Humans on the other hand reached that threshold pretty quick. A few of them were a bit closer, having consumed a few drinks earlier in the day and were not yet totally down from that high. As the night grew on the conversation got louder, and much more interesting.
Dr. Katie raised her hands,
"Ok ok... you wanted to hear it, so I'll give it to you. I've worked in the ER for fifteen years plus, trauma centers and other level one clinics and there is NOTHING I haven't seen, and I mean nothing." "Worst story," Mav urged.
"No... no, no, no, not at the dinner table…” Begged one of the ladies. Katie took a drink,
"There was this one time I come into a room to check on a patient, and there is this guy with real shifty eyes and he can't stop squirming. Real professional looking type right, so immediately I know he's got something crammed up his ass." The table burst into a fit of giggling.
"So I go up to him and I ask him what's wrong and he hems and haws and he's all like 'Doc, I have some intestinal pain, a stomach ache,' you know obviously because of the thing he's got jammed in his ass." More giggling.
"So of course I ask him all the usual questions, where is the pain, is it something he ate, how long has this been going on, you know and the entire time I am just trying to figure out what he's got up there, because I KNOW he's got something up there, but of course he won't admit it. We go around like this for like twenty minutes, right, and eventually I am just like send him down to radiology. If this guy won't give me a straight answer, I bet an X-ray will." Sunny shook her head.
"Low and behold, the x ray comes back and what does this guy have spelunking in his insides? None other than... a Barbie doll." "No!" "Yes, and he had thought about this, like, he had tied her arms down to her sides with rubber bands to make sure they stayed in place. So, I go back in there, I look at him and I show him the X-rax and of course he plays it like I'm a moron. 'Well doctor, I was cleaning my kids playroom, naked,' as you do lol, 'and I slipped and fell.'" Maverick snorted into her drink.
"And of course I am like ‘yeah sure, but why didn't you tell me that when you came in’, and you know what this sucker does? He Looks me dead in the eye and goes... ‘I forgot.’" The table erupted into laughter. CJ laughed and wiped her face with a napkin,
"Now hold on, I got one. It was in boot camp." Mav rolled her eyes,
"Oh no." "Oh yes! Some of the guys had been clearing an abandoned hotel, as part of our training. I wasn't there at the time, but I guess while they were looking around they find this nine inch, monstrous rubber dong stuck to one of the walls. So of course, they laugh it off right, and go back to what they were doing. Well, when they come back later, it isn't there. Kind of weird, but whatever. At least whatever until this thing starts SHOWING UP around barracks. Like our Sergeant walks in one morning to do an inspection and we had all just gotten up right, so none of us were paying attention. She starts yelling at us like she does and then goes all quiet. She tilts her head one way and then the other. I swear I have never seen someone look so confused in their entire life and she's all like, "What the fuck is that?" We all turned around to look and this thing is sitting in the middle of the damned floor and it just flopped to one side, and you know of course we can't stop it so we just start laughing. The sergeant is trying not to laugh and everyone is trying not to laugh, but it just gets worse. When she could finally talk, she just starts screaming at us, trying to figure out what the hell we had been doing the night before. I don't think I've ever done so many pushups in my life." Jackie raised a hand just then,
"No hey, I have always had a question for you guys about the whole boot camp thing. So, what do you do when it's your time of the month? I mean do they let you guys off easy to go fix things? Or do you just have to suffer?" "Suffer…” Mav piped in.
"Mostly suffer. Like I knew girls who would be bent doubled in pain and still had to stand in formation with us like it was nothing. I mean honestly the shit we had to go through. Seriously, there is nothing worse than standing in front of your sergeant and feeling half your innards just sort of shlop out of you and you have to look this guy in the eye like nothing is going on. Like yes sir, no sir, like insides aren't totally falling out right now." Jakie moaned,
"Tell me about it, cramps are the worst." She glanced towards Dr. Katie,
"Seriously, when is the medical field going to do something about that?" Katie finished off her drink and set it back on the table with a thud,
"You would think after more than 200,000 years of menstruation we would know how to fix cramps, but nope, the medical field still has no friggin clue how to deal with them. The general consensus is to throw an anti- inflammatory, a heating pad or a shit-ton load of chocolate at it and pray, but otherwise sucks to suck." Sunny looked between the group of them,
"Cramps? Your insides falling out...er ... are you guys ok?" The group turned to look at her with incredulous looks on their faces,
"You aren't serious?" Jackie asked. Sunny stared at her blankly.
"You guys don't have cramps, periods on your planet... like really?" "Explain?" Sunny wasn't entirely sure that she appreciated the explanation once it was over and shook her head vigorously, "EWWW no... no," She shivered. Battle sounded like a more amusing pastime.
"How does it work on your planet?" Katie wondered, the scientist in her taking over.
Sunny shifted awkwardly,
"Well uh...we have a mating season. The female can become fertile twice a year. It's during the dark season, so generally all the kits are born during or right before the bright season." "So, what? Do you guys just get really horny twice a year or something?" "Er... well no. Any time of year is fine, but you are just more likely to get a kit during those times of year.” "Uh huh, how interesting." Sunny didn't exactly see how it was all that interesting. She had never been caught in this sort of conversation, oddly enough.
Adam had never asked so she had never been forced to answer the question. In fact, she learned more about humans in the last ten minutes than she had learned about humans in the last year she had been aboard the ship and not all of it was great.
One of the biggest things she learned was that humans get slightly strange the more they drink. "Ok, Ok," CJ slurred,
"Hottest guy aboard the ship, go." "Ramirez," Katie responded almost immediately. Mav snorted into her drink again,
"Really... no... no way." "What, he's cute, I'd do him." Jackie raised her hands over her head,
"I couldn't tell you who the hottest guy on the ship is, but I CAN tell you who the hottest girl is." Mav didn't bat an eye,
"Well of course that would be me, like we even have to debate that subject." Jackie rolled her eyes and the rest of the table laughed,
"Ha ha, your confidence never ceases to amaze, but you're not my type." Katie waved a hand,
"Oh come on, I know you don't' LIKE guys like that but you must be able to tell when one of them LOOKS nice. Come on, a shot in the dark." Jackie shrugged, but thought about it for a second,
"Uh... well, how about Adam, he's good looking, right?" The table thought about it for a moment. Mav tilted her head to the side thoughtfully,
"Well I mean yeah he is, but he's also a super massive juvenile." CJ shrugged,
"I don't know, I think it's kind of cute." Katie waved a hand at all of them,
"Not like it matters, because I have a couple of theories." Sunny and the other's looked on in interest, waiting,
"I'm pretty sure he's: A into guys, B not into anyone or C a closeted extrial.” There was some muttering from around the table, but Mav shook her head in disagreement.
"No, he's too uncomfortable around women to like guys, and you can't say he's hiding it because he has no reason to. If he really liked guys he would be indifferent to women and awkward around men. If he wasn't into anyone, he wouldn't be nearly so awkward... however, I can probably get behind C." ”Yeah I also thinking it is definitely C…” Sunny did not notice the glances pointed her way.
The conversation moved on to the hottest girl on the ship, which sparked a furious debate despite Jackie being the only one that liked girls. Turned out though that female humans had no issue discussing the perceived hotness or notness of other women. Nairobi down in engineering took the title with almost unanimous agreement.
That lead into the subject of who was the best looking DREV aboard the ship and once Sunny explained that height and carapace color were the most important outside factors, mixed with fighting status, it turned into a rather entertaining debate as the humans tried to decide which Drev was the hottest, while continuing to steadily drink.
It finally devolved into a slurred argument between Cannon and another of their Drev members, Roc.
Sunny would have found the entire thing funny if it wasn't also rather disturbing. Her vote was the tiebreaker which was obviously biased, considering that Cannon was her brother and that was super weird, so of course Roc won the title.
The drunker they got, the worse they got, until the conversation was oscillating constantly between being mildly lewd and hilariously embarrassing stories that Sunny wouldn't have admitted to in her wildest daydreams.
In the end, it was up to her and Mav, who also didn't drink to get the other girls back to the shuttle.
That was all before realizing that CJ was the only one who could fly the ship, so they had no way of getting back on their own. In the end, they had to call for backup and a rather amused shuttle pilot showed up on scene to take the staggering party back to the ship.
Sunny wobbled onto the ship holding up two drunk women while Mav helped a third.
Together they collapsed onto some cargo containers laughing and slurring.
A shadow fell over them a moment later and Sunny looked up to find Commander Vir standing over them with a raised eyebrow,
"Fun time, Ladies?" A burst of giggling,
"Yes sir, very fun time and quite some interesting revelations." Mav smirked. Katie almost fell off her seat, but Vir caught her by the arm,
"Alright, to bed with the lot of you." Kate tried to wave him off but nearly fell over once more.
"Krill is going to have a fit when he sees the state of you. Come on, let's get you to bed to sleep it off." He glanced over at Mav,
"Get the rest of them back safe." Mav saluted and Katie giggled drunkenly, but managed to make it to her feet and together they wandered off towards the medical bay where the medical staff usually slept.
Sunny also helped Mav get the other two to their quarters, before retiring to her own room exhausted, but happy.
It had been a good day. She determined to do it more often. Previous First [Next](link)
