Journal of Camille Lambert - April 13th
As we drove back to Puriysk in the morning I watched the landscape pass me by with a quiet melancholy and promised myself that I’d see it all again soon.
Dom sat in the back seat of the SUV beside me while Nina drove, contentedly munching on a fresh bag of sunflower seeds as the ruined church loomed ahead of us.
“So the first order of business is evacuation, right?” Dom asked, “In which case, I’ve gotta ask, how exactly do we factor into this?”
“Right now, Milo’s thinking you two can help with the Thompson Falls evacuation,” Nina said. “It’d probably be helpful to have a couple of locals there to make sure people know we’re actually here to help, as opposed to just another group of jackoffs bringing in a fresh batch of misery. Although it sounds like I’m gonna be stuck in Puriysk for the time being,”
“You’re not coming with?” I asked.
“Nah, Milo wants me around in case Calhoun tries anything. I’ll probably be with Gretchen in the archive, looking for anything useful. Fun, fun, fun.”
“So you’re with Dr. Di Cesare? I asked, “Should be interesting at least.” I said.
“I could be worse off,” Nina admitted, “It’s hard to get a read on her, but if Milo trusts her, so do I. Besides from what I’ve heard, she’s one of the most powerful witches out there, which is probably saying a lot considering the fact that she’s a Di Cesare. Just about all of them are powerful witches, and they’ve got some
serious pull among vampires.”
“She’s a vampire?” I asked. I thought back to the way she’d been out and nothing about her stood out as anything particularly ‘vampire-ish’. She was a little pale, I guess. But so was Dom and I was pretty sure he wasn’t a vampire!
“The whole Di Cesare family is,” Nina said before noticing my obvious concern, “Don’t worry about it, most vampires are pretty safe. Milo’s probably got some volunteers lined up to keep her supplied with fresh blood as she needs it. Plus, the Di Cesare’s are generally pretty peaceful. I wouldn’t pick a fight with them, but they don’t cause that much trouble unprovoked.”
“Do you know a lot of the Di Cesare’s?” I asked. Nina just shrugged.
“I met a couple of her sisters on a trip to Greece last year through some mutual friends but that was more of a social thing,” She said. “From what I heard, Gretchen doesn’t really get out much. I’m a little surprised that Milo was able to bring her in on this, but then again Milo could probably sell vodka at an AA meeting.”
Somehow I didn’t doubt that.
“So how long do you think the evacuation might take?” Dom asked, “How long until we shift focus to Calhoun?”
“Shouldn’t be that long,” Nina said. “Milo wants this run pretty smoothly. A few days, give or take. The hard part is gonna be what to do with everyone once they’re on the outside. Not sure how Milo’s gonna manage, but that’s above my pay grade. I’m just gonna assume he’s figured something out. Don’t worry. If everything goes to plan, we’ll be done with this in the next week or so and you two can go back to your hotel room for ‘
coffee’.”
Both Dom and I looked over at her.
“Thin walls,” She replied, not even taking her eyes off the road. I caught Dom turning bright red before he looked out the window, trying to end this conversation as quickly as possible.
The church was just ahead of us, although now I barely recognized it. Several large metal poles had been put up, bearing familiar sigils on them. I noticed white spray paint in the grass, marking a larger ritual circle. Several tents had been set up in an area outside of the ritual circle and I could see people near them. The people from Puriysk, most likely. There were even more tents that sat empty nearby, no doubt waiting for the refugees from the other towns.
I could see smoke rising from the collapsed roof of the church itself. Our bonfire from the other night still seemed to be going strong. That was probably a good thing. I could see other trucks parked outside the church, with other tents surrounded by soldiers. This looked to be some kind of staging area, although I never got a good look at the finer details of it.
Nina drove past the metal poles, before following a worn path in the road leading to a second set of poles. A doorway back to Puriysk.
As we drew closer to the second set of poles, I noticed a thin mist swirling around the car. I didn’t realize I was holding my breath as we passed them until we’d actually passed them and I was greeted by the familiar dense forest I’d always known.
I looked back at the church, which was quickly swallowed up by the mist again, and relaxed back into my seat as we returned to Puriysk.
We’d only been gone for a day or so, but Puriysk already looked different than it had when we’d left. Tents had been set up along the main drag and I could see soldiers along the street, all of them relatively heavily armed. Some of them had their faces visible, others wore those netlike veils we’d seen the other night, giving them a more inhuman appearance.
“What’s the point of the nets?” Dom asked, watching as we passed a group of soldiers.
“It breaks up the silhouette or something,” Nina said. “Plus it hides the face. We went over it during the training. Why, you want one?”
“Just wondering,” Dom said, “Never seen anything like this before.”
“It’s more of a special forces type thing,” Nina said, “Technically the FRB doesn’t really do spec ops and shit like that. But I know we’ve got a number of ex military types with us. Milo said something about bringing them in.”
“How many do you think they’ve got?” I asked.
“A couple hundred boots on the ground, I think. Probably fifty or so more just working to support them. It’s not exactly a massive operation, but it’s big by our standards.”
Dom just nodded passively, his attention still focused on the passing soldiers.
Nina stopped the car in front of a large white RV parked near the ruins of the Deputy’s Office. I could see Durand standing out front of it. He’d traded his nice suit from the night before for a more practical outfit, jeans, a polo shirt, and a handgun holstered at his hip. As Nina got out of the car, Milo walked over to greet her.
“Love what you’ve done with the place.” She said. “The tents and the soldiers were exactly what was missing here.”
“Oh, it’ll all come together once we get the power back on,” Milo said. “Everything shut off in the night. We’ve got some backup generators, but it’s still a pain in the ass.”
“Calhoun shut off the power?” Dom asked as he and I got out of the car.
“If not him, then somebody. We sent some folks out to Rankin Mills to see if they can’t get it up and running again. With any luck we should be back to normal shortly. In the meanwhile, I’ve been helping Gretchen bring some stuff up from the archives. She’s in the RV, looking through what I’ve found so far. But I could use a hand going through the rest of it.”
“You got it, boss man,” Nina said. “I saw some interesting shit by the south corner that might be useful.”
“What about us?” I asked, “Nina said something about us helping with the evacuation.
“Yes, actually I had the perfect job in mind for you two,” Durand said. “We could use some friendly faces going in to the towns to make the evacuation go a bit smoother. Natalya’s been a huge help here in Puriysk. We’re hoping to get the same results in the other towns.”
“Sonya in Thompson Falls would know to trust Dom,” I said. “If you can get her on your side, she can probably get most of the town to come along. As for Bakersfield, my Mom lives there. I could help with that team, if you wanted.”
Durand raised an eyebrow.
“You don’t say?” He asked, “You should tell that to Kallas, then. He’s down by the town hall, getting the Bakersfield and Thompson Falls teams organized.”
“Got it,” I said before giving Nina a parting nod, “I guess I’ll see you when we get back”
“See you when you get back,” Nina replied and gave us a parting weave before turning and heading over to the Deputy’s Office with Durand. As she left, Dom and I started down the street toward a group of trucks and tents near the Puriysk town hall.
It was time to get to work.
***
I was on the first of the Bakersfield trucks as they left and as we drove through the old familiar forest, I watched it with a conflicted nostalgia. On one hand, these misty woods were all I’d ever really known and I realized that there’d be a part of me that would miss them when at last I left them behind forever. Of course, knowing what I knew now about our situation ensured I wouldn’t miss them too much, but I’d miss them all the same.
My Mom always used to have a fondness for obscure words. She’d been an English teacher once upon a time, so I guess that made sense for her.
“
Language is so fascinating,” she’d said to me once. “
You know, there’s some beautiful words out there for such complex emotions.”
Looking out the window, a few of those words came to mind.
Like: ‘
Rückkehrunruhe.’ “It’s this feeling of returning home after a trip, only to find it fading into your memory to the point where it no longer feels real… can you imagine.” She’d laughed sadly at that.
“You know, sometimes I can’t help but feel that way about the old world. I shouldn’t idealize it. It wasn’t perfect, but… I would’ve loved for you to see it.”
And I had seen it, hadn’t I? What would she say when I told her? What would she say when I came to Bakersfield with a convoy of trucks, come to bring her and everyone else home again. Out of this beautiful, cruel world and back into the one she’d missed for so long. I could already imagine the way that her eyes would light up… I could already imagine her smile. It’d been a few weeks since I’d seen her… I hoped she was doing okay.
“Here’s another one I like… Occhiolism. It describes the awareness of the smallness of your own perspective. Do you understand what I’m talking about? That… melancholy, you sometimes feel when you reflect on your own experiences despite knowing how much more is out there. Or… am I thinking of Onism? No… no… although they are similar. Do you know what Onism means? It describes the frustration of having to live in just one body, that can only be in one place at a time.” “Mom, what are you talking about?” I’d asked her. She’d looked up from the book she’d been reading and smiled sheepishly at me.
“Sorry… I guess I just feel like sharing these with someone. They are interesting, don’t you think?” “Yeah, I guess they are,” I said, mostly just to be polite. She’d paused for a moment, almost closing the book.
“You can keep going!” I said,
“Come on, tell me another one.” “How about ‘Nodus Tollens’. It’s the realization that the plot of your life doesn’t make sense to you anymore. You know I sort of like the wording there. Speaking of life like a story to be told…”
The truck turned and I recognized the landmark we’d just passed. An old, crumbling house that had been abandoned for as long as I could remember. Bakersfield was just ahead. I perked up a little bit and looked over at the driver beside me.
“It’s just up ahead,” I said. “Do you need directions to the house?”
“Yes please,” The Driver said.
“Right, once you see the Whitman farm on the right you know you’re in Bakersfield. From there, you just keep on the main road until you reach the downtown area. There’s sort of a suburb right past that and…”
My voice died in my throat as I caught a glimpse of what was in the mist ahead of us. I could see the familiar fence of the Whitman farm just up ahead but something seemed wrong.
“Is the mist always this heavy?” The driver asked.
“Not here…” I replied. I’d never seen it this heavy in any of the towns before. We could barely see a few feet in front of us. I tried to get a better look at the fence. Tried to understand why it looked so wrong. It almost seemed to be tangled in vines or branches or something.
And as we drove closer to the storefront of the farm itself, I noticed the same vines growing over the store. The sign that read ‘WHITMAN FARMS’ was almost unreadable behind the branches. The driver stared at it with narrowed eyes before reaching for his radio.
“Transports 2 to 10, status yellow. Keep on alert.”
The farm faded away into the distance and as it did, I looked ahead anxiously. I could see the downtown area just up ahead, and even from a distance I could see the vines growing over the buildings. I stared with wide, uneasy eyes as we got closer… and when I saw the people on the street, I felt a sinking horror burrowing through my chest.
Most of them seemed as if they’d either been trying to run or had been pulled to the ground… and honestly, I only barely still recognized them as people. I could see clothes and sometimes jewelry through the vines… but the skin beneath it all looked no different than the wood that bound them.
I looked over at the driver beside me to see an uneasy dread written all over his face. He looked at the silent figures we passed with the same horror I knew that I felt… and I knew that just like me, he had no answers.
“What the hell is this…” He said under his breath.
“I don’t know., Came my honest reply.
Thick branches seemed to burst from the concrete sidewalks, ensnaring those who’d once passed them by. I could see an upended baby stroller on the street, one of the branches burrowing into it, and felt my heart seize in my chest. As I drank in the eerie silence of Bakersfield, the
knowing gnawed at the back of my mind…
“Drive faster,” I said. “Third turn up ahead. Take a right.”
“Ma’am…?” The Driver asked.
“Now!” I said.
He looked at me, silently understanding what I was asking and why. The truck sped up, blowing past stop signs and darkened stoplights. I don’t suppose that it mattered. There were no other vehicles on the road. He only slowed a little for the turn and even then, he took it fast.
“Take Lake Street, it’s the fifth house,” I said and waited for him to take the turn. As we drove, I kept glancing at every house we passed. I could see branches jutting in through their windows… and darkness within.
No… no, no, no…
The truck took its final turn. I could see Mom’s house up ahead.
“That one!” I said, pointing it out.
He didn’t even have time to stop fully before I’d thrown open the door and was getting out.
Mom’s house was no different than the others. The vines had grown along the sides, even slipping under the pastel siding in some places and prying it off the outside walls. Thick branches jutted out of the earth and had through some of the walls.
“No…” I said under my breath. Before I even knew what I was doing, I was running. I unlocked her door and tore inside, looking around frantically.
“Mom?” I called, but there was no answer. Only mist and silence.
“MOM?!” I called again, running down the hall toward her bedroom. I didn’t see her there either… but I did see her bathroom door hanging open, and I could see the ivy, growing out from the door and crawling along her carpet. On legs like jelly, I started toward the door. With one trembling hand, I pushed it open, knowing what I’d see inside but praying to whatever God might listen that it wouldn’t be there.
The branches that entombed her didn’t cover her face. Her skin was gray, almost blending in to the wood itself… but I still recognized her. Her eyes were half open, as was her mouth, and the moment I saw her, I knew she was past saving.
“No… no… no…” The word tumbled meaninglessly out of my mouth as my legs gave out from under me, sending me crashing down to the ground. The tears began to fall and soon, the only thing I could do was scream.
***
“Here’s an eerie one… Kenopsia. It describes the forlorn, unsettling atmosphere of a place that is usually filled with people, but is now quiet and abandoned.” Mom’s voice echoed in my mind as I sat in the tent back in Puriysk.
The past few hours seemed like a blur. I could remember the trip to Bakersfield and the sight of her body. But everything after felt like a half remembered dream.
I hadn’t been able to stay in Bakersfield… there wasn’t any point to my staying and I could barely even remember a single detail about the drive back. It all just happened around me, as the reality of what I’d seen untethered me from the present moment and cast me adrift and mindless in time. My hands were still shaking a little and though my breathing had calmed down, my heart certainly hadn’t. I could still feel it racing.
“Rubatosis… the uncomfortable sensation of being aware of ones own heartbeat. Huh… you know, I always wondered if everyone else was uncomfortable being aware of that. Feeling your own pulse and stuff like that… do you ever get that, Cammy?” “Cam?”
I looked up to see Nina standing at the door to the tent. Her expression was grave and her voice, heavier than usual.
“How’re you holding up?” She asked.
I didn’t answer. I didn’t need to. She approached my table and sat down beside me.
“I brought you a drink. Wasn’t sure if you’d want something hard or not, so I technically got two, but…”
I saw the beer in her hand and quietly took it although I didn’t immediately take a drink. Nina watched me for a moment, before sighing and opening her own drink. And for a few minutes, that’s just how we stayed.
“Kallas said he found some holdouts after you left,” Nina said after a while. “He got back with them about an hour ago.”
I looked over at her.
“How many?” I asked. Nina hesitated before answering.
“Twenty… maybe thirty.”
I felt the weight in my chest drop even lower. Twenty or thirty… there’d been hundreds of people in Bakersfield, and we’d only brought back twenty or thirty.
I looked back at Nina. She was staring down at her drink, and I knew that there was more.
“What about Thompson Falls…?” I asked, “Or Rankin?”
“We’re meeting with Milo to go through it in ten minutes,” She said. “You don’t need to go but… I think you should be there. Better you know sooner rather than later.”
“How bad is it?” I asked softly.
“Bad,” Nina replied, before taking a sip of her drink. “It’s the same story in Rankin and Thompson… we’ve got survivors. But not a lot.”
“Sonya…?” I asked.
“Alive, thankfully,” Nina said. “Along with most of the people who were inside the Roadhouse.”
I closed my eyes and exhaled, feeling that weight lift just a little bit. At least there was some good news.
I finally took a sip of my drink. Nina seemed to want to say more but stopped herself. I couldn’t really blame her. She probably knew just how little there was to say here.
“You said you lost your mother, right?” I asked. “How did you…”
“How did I handle it?” She finished. I nodded.
Nina seemed to think over her answer for a few minutes before finally speaking.
“I’ve got two different ways to answer that question,” She said. “For the grief… you just learn to live with it. You make your peace, you carry them in your heart and you thank God for the good memories. I know it doesn’t sound like it helps much, but really that’s the only thing I can offer you. As for the anger… the only fix for that is retribution, edgy as it sounds. And for someone like Calhoun, the only thing you can do is take an eye for an eye.”
“Is that what you did?” I asked.
She nodded.
“I know a lot of people who’ll tell you that revenge isn’t the answer. But personally, I think they’re asking the wrong question. The vampires that killed my Mom were… they were monsters. A couple of assholes with delusions of grandeur were convinced that they could do whatever they wanted, and nobody would stop them. And for the longest time, they were right. Hunting them down and killing them… it didn’t fix anything. It didn’t undo what they’d done. But it sure as hell made me feel better. Not because I got revenge, but because I got the personal satisfaction of making sure that karma caught right the fuck up to them. And I sleep a hell of a lot better at night, knowing that’s what I did.
I nodded in agreement.
“I think I would too,” I said.
***
“What I want to know is why…” Durand said as we sat around the table. He almost looked like a completely different man from when I’d seen him that morning. He drummed his fingers on his desk and kept smoothing down his hair.
Dom sat beside me, a little quieter than usual with his arms tightly folded to his chest. He stared down at the table but didn’t seem to actually be looking at anything.
“Rankin Mills, Bakersfield, Thompson Falls…
why? They were his own goddamn people!”
“Not for much longer,” Dr. Di Cesare said. She was the only one at the table without a grim expression. “Calhoun was most certainly aware of our operations. Provided he had no other immediate means to disrupt them, then this course of action may have simply been the most effective.”
“The most effective?” Nina asked incredulously, “We’ve only been working this job for a few days, and the first thing this asshole did was throw all of his toys out of the fucking pram.
‘If I can’t have them, no one can.’”
“We were lucky to get about fifty people out of Thompson Falls!” Dom added, “Fifty, out of five hundred!”
“We only got four out of Rankin Mills…” Kallas said. “The rest were tangled in those branches… I’ve never seen anything like it.”
“Considering the unprecedented control Calhoun demonstrates here, unprecedented occurrences should be expected,” Dr. Di Cesare said. “But I must admit, it is fascinating. Given the chance, I’d like to visit the afflicted areas for further study. Although I do also appreciate the samples your team provided, Mr. Kallas. Much obliged.”
Kallas ignored her comment before looking at Milo.
“So where exactly do we go from here?” He asked, “After today, there’s not a hell of a lot left to rescue!”
“I’m aware,” Durand said. “But let’s try and stay focused on the ones we did get out. We should keep a close eye on the towns too just in case. There may be some stragglers we missed.”
He looked up at Dom next.
“Correct me if I’m wrong but by taking out Rankin Mills and Bakersfield, he’s shot himself in the foot too, hasn’t he?” He asked, “I’d imagine that Parsons would be without food and power too, now.”
“Not exactly,” Dom said. “Parsons has its own power plant. It’s not exactly as powerful as the one in Rankin Mills, but from what I’ve heard it should be enough to keep the town running. As for the food supply, that might be a little dicier. But I’m willing to bet that Calhoun has a fix for that too.”
“Given his implied ability to come and go as he pleases from this Pocket Reality, as well as the lack of a sufficient explanation for where his fuel and ammunition comes from, it’s reasonable to assume that outside supply lines do exist,” Dr. Di Cesare said, before pausing to think. She checked something in her notebook before looking back at us. “A theory…” She said, “I agree that leaping to such a drastic response so early in our operation does seem unusual. What if this move wasn’t petty, but practical?”
“Practical?” Durand asked.
“As of now, Calhoun has brought five towns into the pocket over at minimum a fifty year period. Why stagger them so far apart?”
“Well I’d imagine it’d take a hell of a lot of juice to pull off something like this,” Durand said and Dr. Di Cesare shook her head.
“Correct, but not relevant. Power is not the issue. Timing is. Calhoun must have been aware that
someone could come for him. Hence, he moved slowly. Avoided drawing attention. He was only discovered by accident. Had that accident not occurred, he could have continued to operate for decades more, but I digress. Us here right now may stand as a realization of one of his greatest fears. Discovery. Opposition. Now that he has seen his fears realized. It may explain his drastic actions. Perhaps this is not an act of pettiness… but of sacrifice.”
The rest of us at the table were quiet. I was the one who broke the silence.
“Sacrifice to what?” I asked.
“Countless Gods dwell within the Midnight Grove, each offering various gifts in exchange for souls. With enough souls to trade, Calhoun could very quickly evolve from a problem into a genuine threat. Running the numbers… it makes too much sense. The towns technically remain under his control. The people may be gone, but the people can be replaced. And having obtained the power to drive us off, what reason would Calhoun have to continue to develop this place at its previous steady pace? He could… no, he would
need to push for a more aggressive expansion to compensate for his losses. And with the assurance that we and likely others could do little to stop him, I see no incentive for him not to do exactly that.”
“So what, this is some kind of power move?” Nina asked, “Now that he sees what he’s up against, he’s trying to bulk up?”
“It would be the sensible thing to do,” Dr. Di Cesare said. For the first time since I’d met her, she looked genuinely troubled.
I saw Durand’s brow crease.
“If that’s what he’s up to, then we need to deal with him sooner or later. Gretchen, Kallas we need to go over the estimated death toll. Calhoun just killed a whole hell of a lot of people. I wanna have some idea of what he might be trying to buy.”
“No need. It would be impossible to predict,” Dr. Di Cesare said. “The terms of whatever agreement he may have entered into would be known only to him, the Eldest and whatever entity he’s looking to barter with… and given what he’s already done, time may be against us. Immediate action needs to be taken.”
She reached into her coat again to take out the revolver. She set it on the table again.
“We have a means of execution. All we need now is opportunity.”
“How many bullets are in that gun?” Nina asked.
“The cylinder holds six, we have five remaining,” Dr. Di Cesare replied. “Given time and resources, I could make more, but-”
“You just said that we don’t have time,” Nina replied. “We only need one to kill him. Five should more than do the trick.”
Dr. Di Cesare nodded.
“Agreed,” She said.
“So if we can kill the fucker, let’s just do it and get it over with,” Dom said. He looked over at me. I gave no response, I just looked down at the gun and remembered what it had done to the Nightwalker the other night.
I would’ve loved to see it do the same to Calhoun.
Durand was also staring down at the gun, and after a moment gave a single, tense nod.
“Alright,” He finally said. “Kallas, I need you to continue overseeing the evacuation. Double time it, make sure everyone gets out. Do whatever you have to. And Valentine, I’m giving you the official go ahead to find Ben Calhoun and deal with him by any means necessary.”
“It’d be my genuine pleasure,” Valentine said.
“Good. Then let’s get-”
A klaxon alarm sounded from somewhere outside, cutting Durand off.
“Proximity warning,” Kallas said. “Something’s coming.”
“Nightwalkers?” Dom asked.
“But it’s not dark yet!” I replied.
Durand just pushed past us, stepping out of the tent with the rest of us right behind him. The sky was still bright, but we could see mist flowing in past the empty buildings and the FRB’s tents and inside the mist, we could see the shadows of what was coming.

2023.03.22 19:31 micktalian The Gardens of Deathworlders (Part 13)
Part 13: What you don't know can hurt you (Part 1) (Part 12) [A/N This one gets kinda dark in the second half so... yeah this is your warning.]
"How did you cook this meat to make it so…" Atxika was struggling to find the right words to describe what she was tasting. "It's rich, tender, flavorful, slightly sweet, and… something else."
"Buttery." Mik replied with pride clear in his voice. "I used a lot of butter and garlic when I seared it, then a lot more when I broiled it. The garlic makes it slightly sweet, but it's the butter that really kicks it up a notch."
"Is it real butter? Where'd yah even get it?" Sarah's question came through muffled as she was still savoring a particularly juicy bite of steak.
"You aren't gonna believe this..." Mik's grin grew a bit coy and he hoped she would get the reference without completing it.
"Do I even want to know what butter is?" Tens asked while watching some of the oil drip from the bite at the end of his fork.
"It's another dairy product, but this is a synthesized version of it. Also perfect copy though." The Martian clarified before taking another bite.
As soon as Mik said that, both Tens and Atxika shot each other questioning glances. The grand buffet they were treated to the night before had been incredibly delicious, with Atxika having found a new love for cheese and ice cream. However, no amount of lactase and digestive enhancers could completely offset the amount of dairy she had consumed. Though Atxika didn't want to discuss the details, it was obvious her digestive system wasn't adapted to that kind of food. Despite the aftermath later on in the evening, the delicacies had all been so good she couldn’t refuse the invitation for an afternoon tour and dinner on Mik's ship, assuming she could safely consume the food.. The slightly modified diner table the four were all seated remained quiet for an awkward second as the oddly paired couple hesitated to continue eating.
"Don't worry, it doesn't have lactose or anything like that in it." Mik commented after seeing the look they were giving each other. "And y'all ate so much cheese and ice cream at the buffet that it would give an avid milk enthusiast stomach problems."
"I was about to say," Tens’s voice had a building laugh, "if this is anything like the dairy from yesterday, my future would include me gripping onto a toilet for dear life."
"Speaking of future activities." Atxika quickly changed the subject while using the side of her fork, rather than her knife, to cut another bite out of the incredibly tender meat. "After seeing this vessel of yours, I am quite curious as to your plans for your new one."
"Honestly, I'm not entirely sure." The expression on the bearded man's face implied he had lots of ideas, but hadn't finished thinking through any of them.
"Not gonna let yahr da borrow it, are yah?" Sarah chimed in with a note of genuine concern in her voice.
"Nah, fuck that guy. He and I had a pretty big falling out after I got out of the hospital." Mik's smile had all but disappeared at the mention of his dad. "Asshole thought me getting hurt would make me join his bullshit crusade."
"Ah." Sarah suddenly regretted her question. "I… uh…"
"Don't worry about it." Mik let his smile come back, though it seemed to be hiding something. "We'll talk about that later. But right now, I wanna talk about giant spaceships! Speaking of, how do you use your quite impressive vessel, Admiral?"
"Didn't Mia or Tarki explain all that during your tour?" Sarah blurted out while Atxika was still savoring the bite steak she had just put in her mouth.
"Well, they didn't give me a tour." Mik admitted while shooting Tens a nod. "Homeboy gave me one when we were high as shit a few days ago." Suddenly his demeanor completely changed as he quickly looked back and forth between Tens and Atxika. "I didn't just rat you out to the Misses, did I?"
"Ha!" Tens blurted out while Atxika covered her mouth as she giggled slightly. "She's the Admiral! She's got cameras everywhere."
"I neither professionally care, nor personally care, if Tens gets intoxicated on his personal time." The Qui’ztar added after quickly swallowing the bite she had been savoring. Her tone even seemed to imply she would be participating if she were in a position to do so. "I trust that he is a mature enough adult to act responsibly, despite how young he is."
There was a moment of pause where both Mik and Sarah's expressions became befuddled by the way Atxika referred to Tens as 'young'. To someone that didn't know the difference between Human and Qui’ztar aging, it would have been easy to assume that all four people seated together were roughly the same age. Though Mik had come to learn he was a few years younger than Tens, it would have been fair to assume the Martian was the oldest person in the room. Sarah, who was the same age as Mik but lacked the same obvious facial scars and wrinkles, didn't even have the same youthful demeanor and appearance as Tens. For Atxika, her rather sharp and toned features made her appear just as young and spry as her significant other. Hearing Atxika refer to Tens as in that way was not something either of them expected.
"Young as in years since birth." Seeing the looks she was getting, Atxika tried to explain the best she could with her limited understanding of biology. "Your species ages much faster than mine, especially during the prime of your life. I turned 57 this year but I won't start losing my strength for another decade or two. And I could easily live another 70 years if I stay in good health."
"And since I'm 34, I'd be lucky to live another 70 years." Tens jokingly added.
"You fuckin’ better." Atxika's voice sounded harsh for a second as reached over and pulled Tens into a side hug and kissed the top of his head lovingly.
"Daaaw!" Sarah cooed at the affectionate display before turning back to Mik. "But wait, yah seriously didn't see all the shite this ship has on it? It's like a full on colony station, just covered in guns."
"I mean, we saw it." Mik shrugged and gave her a blank look. "And it gave me a bunch of ideas to work from. I wanted to ask for some practical, personal advice from someone who runs a ship like the one I'm getting."
"Well, if you want my personal advice." Atxika spoke in a way that implied she would enjoy sharing that information as she slowly peeled herself from Tens. "The first thing you need to do is establish your mission. If you don't know what you want to use a ship like that for, it'll just become a useless money pit. For example, The Hammer’s mission is to act as a mobile fortress and base of operations for my Matriarch's fleet. He was specifically built with features in mind to accommodate that mission."
"Yeah, all that sounds pretty important." Sarah commented before squinting slightly and staring at Mik. "What kinda features did yah ask that robot guy to build yah, huh?
"Right now, it's just the spine, hull, and basic backbone infrastructure." Mik innocently replied. "It'll have the automated production facilities to build it up however I want later though."
"Did you have anything specific in mind?" Atxika's question carried a curious amusement.
"I think it would be really cool to have it be an extension of ChaosU." Mik leaned back in his chair and began stroking his beard. "Here’s what I was thinking. It'll have a bigger habitation and amenities section than The Hammer, but that'll also include a bunch of classroom facilities. More science stuff and places set up for students to do experiments safely. And, of course, a huge ass forest running through the whole thing. "
"But how would you generate revenues to pay for overheard?" Atxika quickly followed up. However, judging by Miks sudden change in expression, he hadn't considered the Admiral’s pointed question. "You have to take into account expenses such as crew costs, maintenance, upkeep, expenditures, and anything else that can come up. A ship like that can be self-sustaining, but not without careful planning and consideration."
"Yeah Mik, tell us how yah gonna pay for it wll?" Sarah chided with a mocking tone.
"I hadn't really thought about that." He replied while resuming stroking his beard.
"Oi, tell me this then. What vidja game yah get this hairbrained idea from?" The ginger poked him on the shoulder while he turned his head to shoot her a glare.
"TV show, actually." Mik couldn't help but let a smile peek through. "The one I tried to get you to watch with me for a while."
"Anime? Of course, you fuckin’ dweeb!" The ginger’s overly dramatic reaction and insult that didn't properly translate caused Tens to instinctively start chuckling.
"I have to admit." Tens's voice became slightly excited as he thought about the potential. "Having a school in space, where you could actually go and see the stuff you're learning about, would be way better than anything I've ever heard of."
"That idea certainly does have some interesting possibilities." Atxika commented while her mind ran through the logistics of that mission profile. "It would certainly be possible to run an operation like that, assuming profit was not an objective. It may even become profitable, depending on how much you charge the students, of course."
"I mean, I'd want it to be free." Mik said to the shock and confusion of everyone else at the table. "Like how ChaosU is free."
"Oh, so kinda 'free', but not really." Sarah rebutted while using air quotes when she said 'free'.
"What do you mean by 'free' in this context?" Tens asked the question that both he and Atxika were thinking, but Sarah already knew.
"It mostly gets paid for by tax revenues and donations." Tens half clarified. "Everyone pays for the education of the next generation because they had their education paid for by the previous one."
"Except if yah aren't a MarsGov citizen." Sarah explained with a tone that implied personal experience in the matter. "Then yah gotta pay out the arse just to get there. Sure, tuition is free. But yah still gotta pay for room and board and all that other shite. That'll cost yah an arm and a leg."
"I mean, there are loan forgiveness and work-study programs." Mik half defended his university. "But I was thinking something a bit more galactic scale."
"Oh?" Atxika's voice suddenly became far more interested in all this.
"Wait, like an intentionally interspecies school?" Tens was almost bouncing in excitement over the idea. "There's only a handful of those, and they're all incredibly prestigious."
"Oh, that's a thing already?" Mik almost sounded disappointed at the easily predictable revelation that he wasn't the first to want to put such an idea into practice.
"Yes, I graduated from such an institution." Atxika sat up a bit straighter in her chair to give this explanation the proper respect it deserved. "I was at the top of my class at the Grand Military Academy of Mui'Luiotl University. Though the university existed for several hundred years before my species' Ascension, we ultimately opened our enrollment to more and more species over time. It now operates as a fully interspecies institution, which is primarily funded by various GCC members, and accepts applications from the entire GCC. It took a few centuries to make all the proper accommodations for the less abled, but it was worth the costs."
"Wait, like disability accommodations?" Sarah's tone implied that the question was touching on something personal.
"We- we don't like to phrase it like that when it comes to other species." Tens interjected and used the word 'we' to imply the Nishnabe, but not necessarily the Qui’ztar. "A Kyim'ayik isn't disabled just because they struggle to move on Shkegpewen or can't physically speak our language. It's almost twice the gravity they evolved under and they have a different anatomy. However, some of the accommodations can be similar. But on Shkegpewen, for example, there are separate, more thorough, accommodations we make for people who are genuinely disabled."
"What do yah mean by that?" Though Sarah was slightly suspicious at the implications, the tone of Tens’s voice seemed to denote genuine compassion.
"It depends on the person and their individual needs. But, like with my cousin Kyet, you remember him, right Atx?" Tens briefly turned to Atxika who responded with a nod and pleasant smile.
"Oh, sweet young man. Very compassionate with animals." She added in a considerate but slightly off tone. "Just a bit…"
"He's 40 now but he still very much has the mind of a child. Like an 6 year old child. But he loves animals. So we found a way for him to really feel like he's part of society while working with animals." As Tens spoke, it almost looked like Sarah was holding back tears. "He works for the Wildlife Conservation Council and puts in more hours than almost anyone else there because it's what he truly loves doing. They just make sure he isn't around animals that can hurt him, or that he could accidentally hurt. And because he works so much, he has more money than he knows what to do with."
"I love it." Mik replied while Sarah was still speechless. "Sadly, I don't think we have anything on Earth, or even Mars, that's quite like that."
"I'm glad yah can fess up that yah ain't perfect over there." Sarah quickly caught her snarky comment and continued in a much more considered wah. "But yeah, both our governments should really do more for the less-abled. Outta everyone, they deserve government assistance the most."
"To be fair, it isn't really our government doing anything, it's just people." Tens tried to clarify, however this only brought on confused expressions. "The government doesn't really treat him differently from anyone else. There's no special status or anything like that. People just do what they can to help people like him be happy and contribute to the Whole. Like I've said before, there's also something to do, even if it isn't absolutely essential."
"See, we have a vaguely similar concept, but I think there's one big difference." Mik's tone had suddenly become very academic as he carefully tried to change the topic away from something he knew Sarah was sensitive about. "We don't do things because they necessarily make us happy, or contribute to society and the universe around us. We do things simply because they generate wealth."
"Well, there's nothing wrong with generating wealth." Atxika interjected a bit too defensively. "My fleet does operate on a for-profit basis for the GCC Military Command. We generate enough revenue to both sustain the fleet and bring home wealth for our Matriarchy to help reduce the taxes required to fund our internal programs."
"Wait, how does that work?" Fearing that she may let something too personal slip, Sarah was glad to keep this new line of discussion going.
"It's part of the system related to the bounty Mikhail received." Atxika replied while gesturing toward Mik and then continued to cut up the last few bites of her steak to make it last longer. "My fleet's cut of that bounty could entirely fund the next few dozen deployments. However, we are using the funds to both improve the fleet and invest in our Matriarchy and people's quality of life. There are a massive variety of situations similar to that where a government, the GCC themselves, have problems that require solving. But they are either unable or unwilling to do so themselves. Either a government specifically will make a request and pay for a particular mission, or funds are provided from the GCC itself."
"So, yall just go around killing eldritch space monsters and get paid for it?" Mik's eyes had grown wide as he began thinking about living out more video game fantasies in real life.
"Kinda, but not really." Tens clarified for Atxika as she took a bite to avoid the question and be forced to make herself sound less cool. "Like, we do fight the occasional pirate and slavers. This last deployment we even ran a small campaign against some Chigagorians. But there's way more training, classes, and waiting for something to happen than actual fighting."
"Ah, just like any other military." Sarah laughed as she thought about all the hurrying up and waiting she had done over the past 4 years.
"And that is why our accommodation section has grown in the way that it has." From her many years as the Admiral of The Hammer, Atxika had hundreds of stories she could tell about the ways bored soldiers found entertainment. "By providing safe and controlled facilities for my crew to… relieve stress and boredom, it keeps them at their peak performance for when they're needed."
"Trying to keep the number of arrests in port down?" Though Mik's joke caused everyone to laugh, Atxika’s chuckle was especially hardy.
"Barely!" Mik and Sarah's translators picked up through the Admiral's laughter. "Doesn't matter what you do or what port it is, someone always manages to get themselves in trouble with local law enforcement. Every. Single. Time."
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Well, no sir. I don't think something like that would be possible." Sarah was shocked to hear her commanding officer try to continue a mission that had already clearly failed. "All of the information regardless of whatever drive system was used is beyond secure. I couldn't get access to it even if I tried."
"I don't think you understand the position you are in, Agent." The stern expression of the face being displayed on the screen implied the man considered that response to be insubordination. "Your mission objectives were clear and you are required to fulfill them per your contract."
"Sir, with all do respect, I am fully aware of the fact I am currently on an alien warship, surrounded by one of the most impressive military forces in the galaxy, and speaking on an unsecured line." Sarah hoped the General would be wise enough to recognize what she was trying to tell him.
"I was guaranteed that this line was secured by-" The General was suddenly taken aback by the direct tone Sarah had taken with him before she cut him off.
"For diplomatic purposes, sir." Sarah clarified. "They probably won't consider an intelligence operation to be covered under that diplomatic privilege."
"UHI is demanding results and that is not up for debate, Agent." The now more aggressive tone coming from the man on screen suddenly reminded Sarah of what Gabriel had mentioned to her. "That technology could disrupt the entire shipping industry and you either need to get your hands on it or make sure that MarsGov doesn't. Your contract is dependent on it. If we do not get the results we expect, you can consider it, and your position, terminated."
And with that, the face on the screen disappeared and Sarah was left alone with her thoughts. Though she had initially signed up for the Central Intelligence Division as a way to pay for college, things got far more complicated after a car accident killed her father and crippled her mother. Her father was the breadwinner for her family and his job as a manager at the local shipwrights helped pay the cost of treatment and accommodations for her mentally disabled brother. Now that she was the sole provider for both her mother and brother, the potential loss of income and benefits would make their life far more difficult than it already was. After a moment of staring at the black screen, Sarah leaned forward, rested her elbows on the desk, placed her head into her hands, and began to cry.
"I'm sorry for interrupting, Miss McAfree, but there is something I feel I am ethically bound to inform you of." The synthesized voice of The Hammer’s controlling AI called out to Sarah in a way that was as comforting as hand being gently placed on her shoulder.
"The fu-?" The woman replied in shock to the dimly light, empty room. "So yah were listenin'?"
"Oh, of course." Tylon replied while the lights in the roof shifted slightly and the holographic projection of the AI's dragon-like form appeared on the other side of the desk Sarah was seated at. "That was, quite obviously, not a diplomatic call. At this point, Military Command is… concerned about your government. Or, more specifically, certain small parts of your government which seem to have no accountability."
"So what?" Sarah asked while staring at the holograph, eyes still wet with tears.
"We are concerned, I am concerned, for the safety of you and your family." Tylon's simple statement caused Sarah's expression to become much more suspicious. "As part of the first contact team, defined by the first contact protocols for this particular event, you are guaranteed certain diplomatic protections. Protections which also extend to your direct family."
"Ok, but why are yah tellin' me this? It's not like I'm in physical danger, just financial." Sarah tried to clarify as she couldn't understand why Tylon was interrupting her with this.
"Are you sure about that?" The holographic dragon's face showed an expression of concern.
"What the fuck are gettin' at? Been listenin' to Mik too much are yah?" Sarah knew her government wasn't great, and it had a lot of areas it needed to improve on, but she couldn’t understand where any of this was coming from. "I don't care what that commie says, things aren't that bad. The dole is shit but-"
The hologram raised one of its claw hands to cut Sarah off as it was obvious by the look on its face that Sarah wasn't getting what he was saying. In Sarah’s personal experiences while growing up in what she considered to be upper-middle class, working-family household, life on Earth really wasn't that bad. There may have been a lot of people who survived universal basic income, but there really weren't any homeless people or anyone starving. Even on her family vacations to other countries, everyone seemed to have a decent minimum quality of life. If she lost her income and benefits from working for CID her family wouldn't starve, even if she had to stay home and take care of them both herself. Even though it would mean all of her dreams of one day becoming a space station administrator would be dead, neither she nor they would be.
"What I am about to share with you I have only shared with a very limited number of people who absolutely need to know." As Tylon started to speak, the screen in front of Sarah came to life and began displaying an UN-E Eyes-Only-Classification marked file. "I am not concerned about the minimum quality of life on your planet. I am solely concerned with the means by which your government enforces its control over its citizens."
"What the fuck is thi-" Sarah cut herself off as the shock of she was reading completely blindsided her. She knew her government did bad things, but not this. "This has to be fake."
"I am so sorry." Tylon’s holographic eyes showed the same pain that Sarah felt in her heart. "But now I hope you understand where the concern comes from and why we are having this discussion."
"Why didn't Gabriel do anything about this?" Sarah's voice had become completely despondent as she scrolled down and realized she wasn't the only person they had done this to.
On the screen in front of her was a CID report concerning the success of manipulating the circumstances surrounding UN-E citizens attending ChaosU. Everything from car accidents like the one her parents had been in to outright kidnapping and direct extortion. Anyone who had signed up for government aid to attend the prestigious and open Martian university was considered a target of these manipulations. If Tylon could find this information in its completely unredacted state, then surely both Gabriel and President River knew about it too. Though Old Man River's showing a relaxed attitude towards these forced spies now made sense, the lack of response from Gabriel did not.
"He is currently occupied in his meeting with Maser." Tylon began to explain in a tone which reflected Sarah's barely hidden rage. "But he explained it to me like this. His options were either to rain fire and brimstone as judgment down upon the sinners, and most likely cause untold suffering to innocent people in the process, or to work behind the scenes to do what he could to reduce the harm."
"My da is dead. My ma will never walk again." The tears were once again streaming down Sarah's face as she slowly began to break down. "I'll fuckin' kill the bastards with mah bare hands!"
"No." Tylon's voice came through in a way through said he truly understood her rage. "That would be too easy on them. What we will do is much worse."

2023.03.22 15:52 Remarkable-Dinner451 What is the definition of a COVID death?
In March 2022, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health
updated its definition of a COVID death: Currently, the COVID death definition includes anyone who has COVID listed as a cause of death on their death certificate, and any individual who has had a COVID-19 diagnosis within 60 days but does not have COVID listed as a cause of death on their death certificate. The updated definition reduces this timeframe from 60 days to 30 days for individuals without a COVID diagnosis on their death certificate... Massachusetts has applied this new definition retroactively to the start of the pandemic in March 2020. As a result, 4,081 deaths in Massachusetts that were previously counted as associated with COVID will be removed. In addition, approximately 400 deaths not previously counted but identified through a manual process of matching death certificates with medical records will be added to the COVID-19 death count. The state’s overall COVID death count, therefore, will decline by 3,700.
Santa Clara County (Bay Area, CA)
made a similar update in 2021: The prior definition included anyone who had COVID-19 who died, while the updated definition focuses on the cause of the death and aligns better with the determinations made by the Medical Examiner-Coroner in cases of overlapping jurisdiction... The refined definition includes only deaths in which COVID-19 is listed as part of the cause of death on the death certificate, incorporating information provided by health experts including medical providers and the County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s office... This shift reduces the total number of deaths attributed to COVID-19 since the onset of the pandemic by approximately 22 percent.
Same with Alameda County (also Bay Area, CA)
around the same time:
In a press release, Neetu Balram with the Alameda County Health Department wrote, "Alameda County previously included any person who died while infected with the virus in the total COVID-19 deaths for the county." ... As an example, Balram explained "a resident who had COVID-19 but died due to another cause, like a car accident, this person would be included in the total number of reported COVID-19 deaths for Alameda County."
Here is the
current definition on the
Oregon Health Authority website:
In Oregon a death is reported as a COVID death if: The death is of a confirmed or probable COVID-19 case within 60 days of the earliest available date among exposure to a confirmed case, onset of symptoms, or date of specimen collection for the first positive test; or The death results from any cause in a hospitalized person during admission or in the 60 days following discharge AND a COVID-19-positive laboratory diagnostic test at any time since14 days prior to hospitalization; or The death is of someone with a COVID-19-specific ICD-10 code listed as a primary or contributing cause of death on a death certificate, regardless of the dates of diagnosis or death.
Who can forget this
infamous press conference from the Illinois Director of Public Health?
Technically, even if you died from a clear alternate cause, but had COVID at the same time, your death is still listed as a COVID death.
Now, I want to take a moment to clarify that I am not accusing anyone of any sort of "conspiracy" to falsify death reports. I'm not accusing doctors and coroners of lying or covering anything up. If you read through these links carefully, you'll notice that they refer to people who
specifically did not have COVID listed as a cause of death but were still included in the total count. This is just the way that the numbers are recorded, and I'd like to have a discussion about that.
These were the examples I could find with a cursory search, so I'm curious, how does your state/county track COVID deaths? Do you think the total count is accurate?

2023.03.22 15:29 Hagu4you Best Tesla Authorized Collision Repair Center in Eastern MA
Unfortunately, I was involved in an accident and my 5 month old MYP (Fremont build) is not drivable. My auto adjustor says it’s not totaled and expects the fix to be less than 50% of the total car value.
Picture Can anyone recommend a Tesla Certified body shop that knows what they are doing/had good experience with? I’m concerned, if I don’t go to Tesla directly, that the car will potentially have drive/tech/other issues after getting it fixed.
I ask because of the following:
1) Tesla Collision Center in MA doesn’t have an appointment til mid-May.
2) I scheduled the service for May, but my appointment was canceled since “Tesla cannot store non-drivable cars at our location.” I can store the car in my driveway since my adjustor doesn’t want to accrue storage fees. That said, if I do store it - I’m unsure if Tesla will even look at it at my scheduled appointment/cancel again.
3) After calling the collision center and scheduling another appointment, they “will see what they can do” but mention there are “over 100 cars in queue, can’t store the car at the collision center while waiting to be repaired, and can’t give me a timeline as to when the repairs would happen.”

2023.03.22 06:20 fefh Death statistics and probabilities
I looked into the statistics and homicide rates in New Hampshire and suicide rates among females in Massachusetts to see what they were.
New Hampshire has a very low homicide rate, it was 1.3 people per 100,000 people in 2004, and it's been around 15 to 20 people killed each year. In 2004, 17 people were killed by homicide. I estimate that less than four of them were women. This is based on historical data of the ratio of women homicide victims to male victims.(77% male to 23% women). I could not find any actual data on the number of women killed each year, or their ages, but I would guess a fairly low rate of women under 25 being killed in New Hampshire
For Massachusetts, the homicides rates are a bit higher at 2.67 per 100,000 people. Maybe around 40 women in total in 2004.
Across all female homicides in the US from 1980 to 2008, 41% were by partners or ex-boyfriends, 17% were by family members, 30% were by other known people and acquaintances, and only 12% were by complete strangers.
So it's a very rare occurrence that a woman would be killed by a stranger in NH. Maybe once every 5 years or more. Maura was also basically hitchhiking which is also an uncommon thing to do. And we don't know if Maura went somewhere with someone, known or unknown to her.
Suicide percentages between men and women are similar to homicide victims, about 75% men and 25% women.
As for female suicides in Massachusetts, it was around 3.2 women per 100,000 women at that time. For the last 10 years it's been around 150 women in MA committing suicide per year. I can't find the numbers for women in MA 2004 but I would estimate it to be around 120 based on 429 total reported suicides in 2004. I believe about 12% of those would be in the 15-24 age range, or an estimated 15 women. The actual number for female suicides in this age range I found is 8 in 2004, but there's also 13 deaths labeled as "Injuries of Undetermined Intent" for females of this age which I suspect may include suicides and overdoses. There were also 7 reported female homicides in this age range in Massachusetts in 2004, and 42 deaths from unintentional injuries like car accidents.
I would say looking at the data that it's more likely a young woman like Maura died in some other way than being killed by someone in New Hampshire just based on how uncommon homicides are in New Hampshire. Although since Maura's body has never been found or any of her possessions, that indicates she was killed or at least her body was hidden and her death not reported.

2023.03.22 02:33 _Lyum Two years with my 2019 Honda Civic Type R
This is going to be a long post of my experiences with my 2019 Honda Civic Type R. im writing this on mobile to please excuse any formatting errors.
Background
Ive been a car enthusiasts since i was a young lad. i am now 26 years old living on the Connecticut coast where i grew up as well. my first car was a white 1992 honda civic dx hatch 4 speed auto gifted to me by my lovely grandma who is still currently kickin it at 100 years old. she gave this to me because i used to service it like change the oil, i did the brakes and tie rods in my power tech class in highschool. i fell in love with this cars nimble handling, lightweight feel, and of course the honda sound when i stopped on the pedal and had to wait an eternity for the slushbox auto to downshift. drove this car throughout highschool. my next car was a 2004 honda civic lx that i used to college, i needed something more practical for college with 4 doors and something a little bit safer. once i graduated college in 2018 i purchased a 2018 honda accord 2.0 with the 10 speed auto. this was a fantastic car but still didnt give me the excitement and engagement i was looking for. one year after purchasing the accord i decided a i need to buy a car with a manual transmission so i could learn. so i did my research and decided a first gen miata was the right choice. i picked up a clean one owner 1996 na miata with the torsen lsd and a 5 sp in feb 2020 just before covid hit and drove prices up. i absolutely loved this car as well, the sublime 5 speed, the handling, top down. one of my fondest memories is riding around with my brother along the Connecticut coatsline and having a girl flash us in the miata. flash forward a year later, its Feb 2021, the accord has had daily duties for 2 years, i get into an accident on the highway that lands my accordnin the shop with minor damages. so im now dailying the miata in connecticut winter and ir realize that i do not mind driving the manual transmission everyday, in fact im looking forward to it. the body shop that my accord was at has eveyone get covid so it remained at the shop for quite some time. during this i realized i was watching civic type r videos everyday, working in the emergency room as nurse, which really changed my perspective on life. i decided it was time. i test drove a used type r and fell in love immediately. it was everything i dreamed of. i found a 2019 with 8k miles for 37.9k online and bought site unseen, traded in my accord which i had positive equity in, and sold my miata to my dad. i wanted a 2019 specifically for the physical volume and infotainment controls over the 17-18 MY and didnt want to pay the premium for the refreshed 20-21 MY. first ever picture
https://imgur.com/a/mt0lyk7 Ownership Experience
the civic type r was delivered on March 23, 2021, im currently at 30500 miles, ive tracked the car 3x and plan on doing more events this summer. i tracked the car stock only having done wheels and tires and had no issues.
https://imgur.com/a/lDnahLe i have had no issues with the car besides the infotainment occasionally needing to be reset. just regular maintenance such as tires, oil, rear brakes. i immediately put 18x9.5 wheels wrapped in 265/35/18 tires on it. also had it ceramic coated to protect the championship white paint. i love how my first car was a white honda civic hatchback and now my current car is as well. this car really means a lot to me and im very grateful that i have this opportunity at such a young age. i drive this car year round on all seasons including on dirt roads when im camping (full size air mattress can fit in the back)
https://imgur.com/a/NaELmJB and snow when im doing snowboarding trips.
https://imgur.com/a/nv5j9cn things i like
handling, power, space! can fit my bike in the back as well at 4 rims and tires, transmission feel, braking feel, seats are amazing. i also love how it looks, ability to track it stock, rev match downshifting is also a great feature for noobs like myself who want to track their car but arent heel toe pros yet. the aftermarket support is also amazing and confidence inspiring
things i dont like
no rev match downshift button (why is it in the infotainment), climate controls could be better, tweeter speakers rattle, 20 inch wheels with rubber band tires stock. this is nit picking yes
things ive done to the car
fk8 mods
ceramic coat - opticoat pro
18x9.5 +38 5x120 rays gram lights 57DR gloss black
Michelin pilot sport 4 all season 265x35x18 on rear
continental sport dws96+ 265x35x18 on front
oem wind guards (came with it)
acuity shift boot collar and poco shift knob
overland designs alcantera center console trim
uniden r3 radar
ma performance street exhaust burnt tip
k & n drop in air filter
3 way dash cam
prl hvi intake
ma performance catted downpipe
hondata tuned with pherable stage 2.0
approx hp/tq 360/360 at the wheels
in the past two week ive added the prl intake, ma performance downpipe and finally tuned the car. (shoutout The Shop in Stratford CT for the work) as you can imagine it feels like i unlocked a whole nother level. it feels exceptionally quick now and i dont feel like i need any more power. the intake sound is amazing.
overall this has been a wonderful experience for a young enthusiast and my first time modifying a car more extensively. ive learned so much, made friends in car community, and still look forward to driving to work everyday. i plan to keep this car for minimum 5 years before looking at used 991.1 Porsches (manual of course) thank you for reading and feel free to ask any questions. i have lots of pictures on my profile of the car. more pics

Merci !

2023.03.20 21:52 SaveMeBe4YouGo Voici comment je suis devenu un jeune papa célibataire
Bonjour,

2023.03.20 21:12 Tobyv0 Idiot Karen thinks dinosaurs are fake, ends up staring one in the face.
This is a story for those who are huge fans of the Jurassic Park/Jurassic World saga and have seen ALL of the films(including Dominion).
Cast: Me=Me, OG=Owen Grady, CD=Claire Dearing, ML=Maisie Lockwood, EM=Entitled Mother, CLD=Cool Dad, ND=Nice Daughter
This takes place about 2 weeks after the events of Jurassic World: Dominion.
With Dinosaurs now back in the world once more, we have started attempting to coexist. Owen Grady has decided to turn his ranch into a safe haven for some of the dinosaurs. Mostly herbivores like Parasaurolophus, Triceratops, Stegosaurus and a couple small Carnivores, including Velociraptors Blue and Beta, who are now tamed.
One very early crystal clear morning, when the sky was just starting to turn that lovely shade of orange, after we got up and had breakfast, we heard a noise coming from outside. We got outside and saw Blue growling loudly near the paddock fence.(despite being tamed, Blue can still be aggressive, but only when the situation is justified)
We looked in the direction the raptor was facing and saw 3 people get out of a car. A woman(the entitled mother, complete with Karen haircut, posture and face), a man(the cool Dad, who actually looked quite shocked at seeing real dinosaurs) and a 19 year old girl.(the nice Daughter, who despite having a similar hairstyle to her mom, wasn’t entitled or snotty)
Owen ordered for Blue to stand down and, like a good girl, she did.
Owen: *shouts* “Hey!”
CLD: “Hey! You’re Owen Grady, right?”
Owen: “Yes I am. How’d you know?”
ND: “My dad is a big fan of you. He saw videos of you training actual Velociraptors! It’s sucks that they’re gone though.”
CD: “Theyre not ALL gone. Blue is still alive.”
ND: “Really?!” *her eyes widen*
Me: ”Yes! And she has a baby.”
CLD: “Like, can we see the raptor?”
CD: “Absolutely!”
Owen does his thing with the clicker and calls out Blue’s name and she immediately comes running, followed by Beta.
ND: “Awwww she’s adorable! Can I pet her?”
OG: “You have to be careful though. She can still be very dangerous.”
Thats when the EM started.
EM: “Well if she’s soooo dangerous then why do you even have her? Besides, you’re not fooling me.”
CLD: “EM, what’re you talking about?”
EM: “This isn’t real. These things are all fake. In my church, I was taught that there are no such things as “dinosaurs.” The earth was only born 6000 years ago, not 4.6 billion. These are all, what, stupid people in costumes or some type of animatronic stuff. This is all Stupid Blasphemy.”
Owen, Claire and Maisie all shared a WTF expression. Blue even tilted her head in confusion.
ML: “Um, this IS real. You are looking at a real dinosaur in the flesh!“
ND: “Mom, please don’t start. How could you even THINK these are fake?”
CD: “You seriously can’t be that delusional.”
EM: “First of all, these so called “bones” and “fossils” were not from real animals. Satanists put these on earth to scam true religious people. And I also heard about this THING *she gestures to Maisie* being a “Clone” of a young human who “presumably” died in a car accident. Gimme a break! *mutters the R word under her breath* kid.”
Maisie gasps at this response and she is nearly in tears.
Me: “How could you say something like that?! This little girl lost her grandfather at a young age and she was kidnapped by poachers, along with the baby raptor!”
EM: *now being all smug like she knows everything* ”Well, she probably had it coming for being a disgusting FREAK of nature! Claiming to be a stupid clone and all.”
Claire gasped at this and Maisie was crying.
The baby Velociraptor came up to the ND and started nuzzling her hand, but EM decided to fricking KICK the baby dinosaur like a dog!!!
Beta shrieked and fell into the snow, but she got up. To say that Blue was pissed was an UNDERSTATEMENT! She ran up to the EM and full on TACKLED her to the ground, but due to being tamed, she knew not to actually bite. She was just growling and snarling loudly.
CD: “Call the police!”
OG: “Already on it.”
He whistled for Blue to get off of the EM and she did, but was still growling.
EM: *screaming* “YOU FREAKS WILL NOT GET AWAY WITH THIS! YOU AND YOUR STUPID FAKE LIZARD AND YOUR DUMB KID! I’M CALLING ANIMAL CONTROL AND HAVING THAT STUPID THING FUCKING SHOT!”
About 5 minutes later, the Police arrived and PO1 and PO2 walked up to us.
PO1: “What seems to be the problem here, folks?”
Before any of us could even get a word in, the EM started twisting the story and putting on fake tears.
EM: “I was just coming to tell them how beautiful their animals were, and then that A**HOLE *points at Owen* told his stupid pet Velociraptor to attack me for no reason! I want that THING KILLED RIGHT NOW!
OG: “I did no such thing, you lunatic!”
CD: “This coming from the moron who KICKED a baby dinosaur like a dog because it was playing with your daughter! And called MY Daughter a Freak of nature and a r****d!”
EM: “THAT ABOMINATION WAS GOING TO MAUL MY DAUGHTER TO DEATH YOU FAT COW!”(Claire Dearing is pretty curvy, but is in NO way shape or form, obese.)
PO2: Ma’am, I’m gonna need you to put your hands behind your back right now.”
EM: “WHAT?!”
PO1: “You’re under arrest for lying to a police officer, threatening to kill an animal and promoting kidnapping towards people with special needs *referring to Maisie*. You do not have to say anything, but it may harm your defense if you do not mention when questioned, something which you later rely on in court. Anything you say may be given in evidence.”
EM: “HELP! RAPE! RAPE! RAAAAPE!!”
OG: “Oh, cut the crap! You brought this on yourself. Take her away.”
Me: “Hold up there, officers! I’d like to just do one more thing!” *I do a two finger whistle like in cartoons or movies and we hear thudding footsteps.*
EM: ”Oh that was just a stupid earthquake or a tree falling down.”
Trees were indeed falling down, but the thumps were rhythmic, and getting louder.
Me, ND, and CLD all said in unison “Don’t move!”
There was something beyond the leaves.
The EM looked up, higher.
Behind the foliage, beyond the cabin, she saw what looked like a thick body with a pebbled, grainy surface like the bark of a tree. But it wasn't a tree. She continued to look higher, slowly tilting her head upward.
She saw the huge head of Rexy, the elderly Tyrannosaurus just standing there, looking through the trees at us! EM turned her flashlight on, and the big animal rolled its head and BELLOWED in the glaring light! Then darkness, and silence again, and the chittering of night critters.
There was another pause. EM watched the scarred Tyrannosaur. The head was huge! The animal looked around slowly, scanning its surroundings and searching for prey. She seemed to stare right at EM!
In the flashlight, the eyes glowed bright red.
EM: "Jesus Christ!”
The greatest predator the world has ever known. The most fearsome attack in human history. Somewhere in the back of her Karen brain, EM was in disbelief, but she could feel her knees begin to shake uncontrollably, her trousers flapping like flags.
Man, she was frightened. She didn't want to be here. Alone among all the people on the scene, EM was crazy religious. She didn’t believe in dinosaurs. She thought that all the fossils and skeletons were a scam by satanists to thwart religion, or in her words, “Blasphemy.”
She tried to reassure herself that she was hallucinating, but her eyes were not deceiving her at all! She was looking at a giant dinosaur! But it wasn’t just any dinosaur, this was a rex! Much, much bigger! The greatest meat-eater that ever walked the earth!
Jesus!
When the Tyrannosaur roared it was TERRIFYING, a SCREAM from some other world! EM felt the spreading warmth in her trousers. She’d peed in her pants! She was simultaneously embarrassed and terrified. But she knew she had to do something. She couldn't just stay here. She had to do something. Something! Her hands were shaking, trembling in her pant pockets.
EM: “Jesus Christ!”
ML: (While wagging her finger at her) “Bad language!”
EM started whimpering and we swung our heads away from the Tyrannosaur. Our flashlights streaked laterally-in time to see EM tripping over her high heels and struggling to get back up.
The police officers cuffed her and dragged her into their vehicle while she was screaming gibberish about knowing the mayor, having a cop brother, threatening to sue.
Needless to say, we never saw her again.
TL;DR Stupid entitled Karen who doesn’t believe in dinosaurs, comes face to face with one.

2023.03.20 20:25 CIAHerpes I was a 911 operator. I still remember the call that scarred me for life (part 1)
“911, what is your emergency?” I said, answering on the first ring. It had been a slow day up to that point, but that was all about to change in a moment.
“I just saw something bad,” a hysterical female voice cried on the other end of the line. “My neighbor, she’s outside, and she’s bleeding…”
“Bleeding from where?” I said.
“Everywhere!” she screamed. I tried to get her address, but she was so hysterical that she kept yelling for help. Eventually, she calmed down enough to give me her street. I heard new voices in the background, all shrieking.
“We have a unit on the way,” I said. “Just stay on the line with me. It’s going to be OK.”
“No,” she whispered, barely audible over the screaming in the background, “it isn’t.”
***
A few minutes later, I was in the break room, getting a coffee, trying to stop my hands from shaking. I was hyperventilating, full of an incomprehensible terror and anxiety that I had never felt on this job before. Before the call had cut out, it sounded like a street full of rabid people had surrounded the caller’s house. Then the radio came on from the police unit that had been first to arrive at the scene.
“Dispatch, you there? This is Shea.” I heard the voice of Trooper Shea crackling. I immediately picked up on the back-up unit we kept in the break room.
“This is dispatch,” I said. “What’s going on?”
“I came down Kansas Street from Union Road, and it’s totally empty except for a few bloodstains. Were you able to get the house number of the caller?” he asked.
“Negative on that,” I said. “Do you see any broken glass or smashed down doors? It sounded like pure hell at the end of the call. She claimed she was being attacked by her neighbors.” Trooper Shea consulted with his partner on the street for a moment before responding.
“We just heard screaming and glass shattering. It sounded like it came from number 67 on Kansas Street. Send back-up.” I ran back to the main room. We had a new system that could livestream 911 calls directly to the cars of police in the area, as well as livestream audio from the car back to dispatch. I turned it on, entering the number of Trooper Shea’s patrol car and listened intently.
“Come out with your hands up!” I heard Shea’s partner yell. Shea gasped.
“Oh God, she needs medical attention,” he said. “She’s got blood coming out of her eyes, her ears, her nose… and vomiting blood. What do you think she has?”
“Ma’am, stop right there!” Trooper Shea yelled. “Do not come closer!” Then I heard a rash of swearing and yelling followed by a gunshot. I dropped my coffee cup on the floor, hearing it shatter and spread burning hot liquid across my shoes, but I was so engrossed and horrified by what I was hearing that I barely noticed.
“Oh God, she bit me!” Shea’s partner said. “She bit my fucking thumb off!” I heard another series of gunshots, then the slamming of car doors.
“Go, go, go!” one of them said, and I heard the squealing of tires.
“Oh, fuck, what is that?” Shea said, then his voice came in over the radio. “Dispatch, this is Shea, and we have a major obstruction blocking the intersection of Kansas and Main. It looks like… I know this is going to sound batshit insane, but it looks like a pile of bodies. Literally hundreds of them, stacked on top of each other like firewood. Maybe they’re just mannequins, I don’t know, but most of them look like they’re bleeding. We need back-up immediately, and emergency medical services as well. Trooper Ingraham lost a finger when we got surrounded by a dozen drugged-up or sick lunatics back there. One of them bit me on the damn calf through my uniform, but I don’t think it will require medical attention. They were biting, scratching and hissing like snakes… there’s something wrong here, I’m telling you.”
“This is dispatch,” I said, “and back-up is on the way.” I wanted to tell him to get the hell out of there, drive the other way, but I wasn’t a cop. I had no authority to do any such thing. They would likely think it was their primary duty to secure and protect the scene until other police arrived.
My shift was about to end in a few minutes when this insanity began, and my replacement walked in just as I hung up the radio. She looked at me, one eyebrow raised.
“You are not going to believe this,” I told her, and briefed her on everything that was happening. Her mouth opened more and more as I recounted the story, her eyes widening in horror. And by the end, I still hadn’t heard from Trooper Shea or his back-up. I was having anxiety and just wanted to get out of there. My family lived nearby, and if there was some sort of crime spree or pandemic happening, I wanted to be home to protect them. My son was only seven-years-old, and I knew he couldn’t protect himself in such an apocalyptic calamity as was occurring in our little town.
As she sat down in the dispatcher’s chair, another 911 call came in, and I took the opportunity to get my stuff and head out of there.
I had only a five-minute drive back home. My knuckles were white as I sped down the residential streets at thirty miles over the speed limit. Traffic was sparse, and I saw nothing out of place.
Until I turned onto my street, that is. My neighbor was an elderly man whose six-year-old granddaughter lived with him. Both of them were standing in the middle of the road, staring up at the sun, their mouths open. I saw long knives in each of their right hands.
I slammed on the brakes a few feet away from them, but they didn’t stir. I tried honking my horn, but they just kept staring up at the sky, without any awareness.
As I looked down from their faces, I realized they were both viciously sawing at their bodies, opening up shallow slice after shallow slice. A waterfall of blood began to run down their skin, soaking into the pavement. I nearly threw up in disgust. I backed up, driving on my neighbor’s lawn to get around them, putting down the window to yell as I passed by.
“What the hell are you doing, Mr. James?” I screamed at him. “Stop this now!” I wondered whether I should jump out and try to stop them, but with their current mental states, I felt they might be just as liable to stab me as not if I got out.
Suddenly Mr. James’ eyes came down, focusing directly on mine, and the knives stopped moving. The little girl grinned at me, waving the blood-soaked butcher knife back and forth, sending droplets of crimson spraying on my car and on her dress.
“It’s… she’s telling me to cut myself, to let the viruses in,” Mr. James said, and his granddaughter stared straight ahead like a doll. It was as if they felt no pain. I saw the blood-covered tendons and muscles of their legs, stomachs and chests as they stood there, slicing deeper and faster, wavering like trees in a hurricane. Mr. James fell to the ground, blood continuously pouring out of him, and his granddaughter pointed behind me, nearly tripping, her head lolling from side to side as her lips started to turn a light blue, probably from the constant blood loss and impending physical collapse.
“She’s here for you, too,” she said. “She wants to play with you. She wants you to open up and let the viruses slide in… they look for the soft, warm spots. They’re so cold. Open it up and let them in, and you’ll never be sad again.” Slowly, I turned, seeing the corpse of a girl standing there next to a tree in my neighbor’s backyard. Her skin was bleached-white, and her mouth was sewn shut, ugly black stitches marring her cyanotic, purplish lips. Her stringy black hair hung down past her shoulders, framing her face as she stared directly at me. Her eyes were milky white, like cataracts, and I saw countless maggots wriggling throughout her body, eating away at the skin of her arms and legs.
“Do you feel the wetness of their tongues? The dead ones just want in,” her voice rang out in my head, distorted and demonic and low. Her lips never moved, and her eyes never moved. The corpse girl just continued to stare in my direction. I felt hypnotized, sitting there in my car. Then I felt them- cold tongues that drew across my back and chest. The car filled with the smell of sulfur and decay. Then my vision began to turn black, as her voice took over my mind, and I fell into a dreamless sleep.
***
“Dad?” I felt little hands pushing on my chest. I opened one eye groggily, forgetting where I was for a few moments. Then I shot up in my seat, adrenaline coursing through my body as I looked around for the corpse girl. “She’s gone, dad. I got rid of her- for now.” I looked down at him, amazed.
“Anthony,” I whispered, looking at him. My head throbbed painfully. “How did you get rid of that thing?” I asked. He shrugged.
“I can do weird stuff sometimes,” he said. “Like during my birthday party last year.” I remembered the birthday party clearly. We had a clown who juggled and cartwheeled and did all sorts of tricks for my son and his friends. My son said he could juggle too, and he wanted to show the clown.
He had run into the house, grabbed a few of our knives and started throwing them up in the air. They seemed to slow down as they rose, floating slowly over his head. They fell as if through water, and Anthony grabbed them easily and threw them back up in the air.
“How is he doing that?” the clown had asked me, breaking character. I had no idea, and simply stood there, speechless. Then I yelled his name, and the knives had all clattered to the lawn.
“She was strong, and I felt her mind. It was so cold, like an icicle going into my head, but I kept her back by building a wall-” he pointed to the backyard where the corpse of the girl had stood- “and kept her there, dad.” I realized he was not talking about a physical wall, but some sort of mental wall that he made in his mind. I nodded.
“She was trying to take you. I could feel the words that came out of her head and into yours. I heard everything she was saying. And she was showing me things. Really bad, really scary things from where she comes from. She told me that, in her home, all the roads are paved with bones of kids like myself, and that the girls like her have their mouths sewn shut, so that they never have to rely on using their mouths to speak. They use their brains somehow. The whole place is run by an insane god who lies by this silver stream. She showed me the god, and I felt it looking at me. It was like insects were looking at me, like insects with huge brains and big, dark, scary eyes.” He shuddered. “What kind of god is that, dad?”
“A god we never want to meet, that’s for sure,” I said, tousling his hair, trying to get him to smile. “The god that we believe in is eternal love and light. Whatever that little girl worships, it isn’t God.” Anthony’s eyes continued to look blankly ahead as he recalled what the eldritch girl had shown him. Then they looked up at me sharply.
“I don’t understand that stuff about viruses that she was saying. What’s going on? Are we going to be sick?” he asked, looking so little and helpless in his tiny windbreaker and jeans.
“I don’t know what she was talking about, but we need to get out of here right now. I’m sure we will be fine if we can just get past the borders of the town- at least, I think so. And I also think some sort of biological outbreak is causing people to go insane…”
As if on cue, a car sped past, fire leaping out of the shattered windows. I smelled burning rubber, hot metal and roasting meat, a disgusting combination of aromas that the nightmarish scene left in its wake. The driver hit a tree, flying through the windshield and smashing his burned body into the trunk at an incredible speed. I saw by the awkward angle of his neck that he was either dead or dying. He looked like a bird who had flown into a window, the neck snapped and the head lolling weakly at a 45 degree angle on a totally broken spine. I turned to look at him sharply. “Where’s your mother?”
“In the house,” he said. I took the keys out of the ignition, grabbing Anthony’s small hand and running towards our home of ten years. I kept looking left and right for the corpse girl, but she hadn’t reappeared yet. I wondered if Anthony truly was so powerful that he could scare her away for good. I seriously doubted it. I had a feeling she was biding her time, and probably watching us at this very moment. The thought sent chills down my spine.
As I walked into the entranceway, I started yelling her name, trying to get out of here as soon as possible.
“Margaret?” I screamed. Anthony was next to me, screaming, “Mom! Where are you?” I led him to the kitchen first, where I grabbed a butcher knife, and gave Anthony a smaller but still very sharp knife from the kitchen drawer.
“Don’t stab yourself by accident with it, kiddo,” I said. “Only use it as a last resort.” He nodded. “I wish I had guns here, but we…” At that moment, my words were cut off by a wailing, pain-filled shrieking from upstairs. I took Anthony’s hand, unwilling to be separated from him for any reason now, and kicked open the master bedroom door.
There, I saw our priest, Father Lanagan, with a pistol to my wife’s head. He was very clearly sick, bleeding from his eyes and nose, a waterfall of gore spilling out of his heaving, gasping mouth. I put my hands up.
“Father Lanagan,” I said loudly and simply. “Put down the gun. You’re sick.” He just breathed louder and faster, his gray eyes beginning to film over with milky, blood-smeared cataracts. He reminded me more and more of the corpse girl. Even his stare was similar- an almost reptilian, sadistic glower that looked down on everything and everyone around.
I took a step forward. All of his attention was focused on me. His gun hand shook hard.
“Look, Father, you aren’t like this,” I said. “You can…” But I never got to finish my sentence. At that moment, my son, small and brave, ran through the alternate door to the master bedroom, his small knife raised above his head like a tiny Amazonian warrior.
“Let go of my mommy!” Anthony said, plunging the knife into Father Lanagan’s stomach. The priest howled in pain, and I ran forward, grabbing his gun hand just as he was aiming at my son. I pushed it up with all of my strength, and the shot went high, blowing apart a dresser drawer. I took the knife and shoved it directly through his right eye. His other eye widened in surprise, the bloody tears coming faster for a moment, then he slumped to the floor. My heart racing, I grabbed the gun out of his hand, making sure it wasn’t pointed at my son or wife in case he had the strength to pull the trigger one last time.
And, as it turns out, he did. The last shot went through the window, the tinkling of glass mixing with the ringing in my ears from the gunshots at such a close distance, and then I had the revolver out of his hand, putting it in my back pocket, sighing.
“Let’s get out of this madhouse of a town,” I said to my wife. She just cried and hugged me, putting her face against my shoulder for a few moments. Then we ran outside, grabbing some bottled water and canned foods on the way and throwing them in a plastic bag.
I drove out of there as fast as I could, quickly entering the fields and woods at the edge of town. But just as I was about to cross over into the next town, I found that the road was blocked.
Dozens of bodies were stacked one on top of another, across the road and the sides of the road. There was no possible way around them. Half of them were naked or wearing torn rags, and some of them still twitched and moaned. They were all crying blood, vomiting gore that ran down the group. I pulled over, putting my head against the steering wheel and crying.
I tried calling for help, but no phone calls would connect. The internet still worked, so I wrote up what had happened. In case my family and I don’t make it out of here, I wanted someone to know what really happened in my town.
Sighing in frustration and despair, grabbing the revolver and handing the butcher knife to my wife, we all got out of the car and started walking.
