Schizophrenic daughter resumed health after I practiced Buddhism (精神分裂症)
2023.03.23 18:01 DrYangHF7 Schizophrenic daughter resumed health after I practiced Buddhism (精神分裂症)
I am from Changchun, China, and I am 74 years old. My husband passed away a few years ago. My daughter and I are interdependent. She suffered from schizophrenia for 23 years.
Today I brought my daughter to Hong Kong to attend the Dharma Convention sponsored by Master Lu. I would like to ask you all to bear witness to this: after I practised Citta Dharma Door taught by Master Lu and recited the Little House, my daughter, who had schizophrenia for 23 years, was completely cured. It was the Greatly Merciful and Greatly Compassionate Guan Yin Bodhisattva and the Greatly Merciful and Greatly Compassionate Master Lu who saved my whole family and my daughter. I sincerely appreciate the Greatly Merciful and Greatly Compassionate Guan Yin Bodhisattva and the Greatly Merciful and Greatly Compassionate Master Jun Hong Lu for saving my family and my daughter.
My daughter’s name is Jing Ma. While on her way home from school in 1988, two months before she graduated from middle school, she was robbed of her school bag. When she got home, she cried and screamed. She held her head and said, "My head was ripped off". She had such a headache that she hit the wall. After graduating from middle school, she could not take the entrance test to high school. She stayed at home and was distracted all day, running away in the middle of the night, into the dark woods. The police patrol found her and sent her back.
Her condition got worse day by day. When she faced the window during the day, her hands were always stroking and her mouth was muttering something. She threw things around the house, smashed them when she wanted to, and stayed up all night. I took her to see a doctor at the First Hospital of Jilin University. The diagnosis was schizophrenia, which was also called hysteria. So I started to see witch doctors, Chinese doctors and Western doctors, and treated her for some time, but nothing worked.
We were advised to go to a temple and take refuge in Buddhism. In 1992, we took refuge in Triple Gem of the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha at the temple in Changchun. We worshiped Buddha, chanted Buddha, and prayed to Buddha and Bodhisattvas for blessings. On the first and fifteenth days of every lunar month, I took her to the temple to attend the Dharma Convention, to write repenting words to ascend spirits of the dead, to set up memorial tablets and to make offerings to the spirits.
In June 2002, my husband became seriously ill. I had to take care of both my husband and Jing Ma at the same time. A Buddhist friend found that it was too difficult for me to manage alone, and introduced us to a hospice in Huinan County, where Jing's father died in October 2002. The laypersons (A layperson is someone who believes in Buddhism, upholds the five precepts, and practices the ten good deeds and who has not left the home-life.) and and leaders there took great care of us. They helped me to look after Jing. To prevent her from running away, they tied her hands and feet with ropes. Everyone took shifts to watch her during the day and night. I lived there for six years. I didn't dare to go home because I couldn't take care of her alone, and I didn't dare to leave her alone.
Prior to the Spring Festival of 2007, I wanted to take her to Changchun to celebrate the New Year at home. We arrived home on the 26th of the lunar month, and she started smashing things on the 27th. I thought it was impossible to stay at home. On the 28th day of the lunar month, I took her to the Guangshan Hospice in Changchun to spend the New Year time. After the New Year, a Buddhist group from Harbin came to Guangshen Hospice and held a Dharma Convention. I and everyone else were busy writing repenting words. While we were not paying attention, Jing Ma went away again. Near the automobile factory, Jing was recognized by General Manager Ning's sister of Guangshan Hospice. She took a taxi to send Jing back. Otherwise, Jing would have been lost.
On March 28, 2008, at 3:30 p.m., Jing ran away again from the Jile Hospice in Chaoyang Town, Huinan County. In the fifth day after she went missing, she was found at more than 50 kilometers from the Jile Hospice.
In July 2008, despite my advice, Jing wanted to go home. She threatened not to eat and to go on a hunger strike. She said: “after we get home, you find me a medical treatment.” In August 30, we returned home at Changchun.
On the first day of the sixth lunar month in 2010, I took her to attend the Transcending Convention at the Yangs’ place of enlightenment to take a refuge in the Triple Gem for spirits. When the Convention was over, a layperson of Jilin asked the abbot, "Do you still have some Little Houses here?" The abbot replied, "Let me take a look. "Then, the abbot found two Little Houses. That's how I saw the Little Houses for the first time.
After leaving the place of enlightenment, I went to Peace World to engrave a CD, and I saw a lady (Translator’s note: This lady is probably Dharma practitioner Ms. He. To facilitate expression, I will use “He” to stand for this lady) engraving one there as well. Ms. He was so pretty, I thought she must have offered flowers to the Buddha in her previous life. She happened to be talking about the Little House, so I asked her what the "Little House" was. She said, "Your daughter seems to have a typical spiritual disease." At the time, I didn't understand what she meant by spiritual disease and asked her for clarification. She answered, "A ghost occupied one’s body!" She continued, "The only way to cure your daughter's illness is to recite the 'Little House'." Upon hearing her say it so confidently, I asked, "Can I recite the Little House?" She said, "If you want to recite and want your daughter to get well, I can't tell you in one or two sentences here. I give you my phone number. If you come to me, your daughter will be really saved."
As soon as I parted with Ms. He, Jing played with me on the road. I had a hard time getting her home. After I got home, I was thinking: Despite not knowing Ms. He before, what she said was so sure I must try. The next day I went to Ms. He's house. She gave me a detailed introduction to the Guan Yin Citta Dharma Door taught by Master Lu and instructed me how to recite the Little House. I respectfully took the book, CD, and blank Little House home.
The second day after I got home, I filled in the headings of 108 Little Houses and began to recite the "Little House" for the karmic creditor of Jing. I recited for half a month, but the effect on my daughter was not obvious because she was still throwing tantrums and smashing things. I called Ms. He. She told me, "You have to pray Guan Yin Bodhisattva to recall the soul of Jing Ma, and pray Bodhisattva to communicate with the spirit in Jing’s body to persuade it to leave Jing's body and go to a good place." I did as Ms. He said. There was an immediate effect on Jing, and it was becoming increasingly evident as time progressed.
There is one thing I must confess. A few days before I met Ms. He, I took Jing to the home of a layperson who is a surgical doctor. At that time, the spirit in Jing's body came down and attached itself to that layperson’s body and said, "I am Xiaocui Ma, Jing Ma's aunt, and I died early (I heard from my family that Xiaocui Ma died very young.)." By that time, I had no idea this message was important, so I didn't tell Ms. He. Later, after Ms. He learned the name of the spirit, she told me to fill out 21 Little Houses immediately, titled: "To Jing Ma’s Aunt Xiaocui Ma." Ms. He said, "In order to achieve a desired result, it's best to pay off the debt using spirit's name." As expected, burning the Little Houses this time has had a particularly noticeable effect on Jing Ma.
Previously, Jing took three pills, now reduced one. Moreover, she does no need to take medicine during the day, just take two capsules at night before going to bed. Every day, Jing sings joyfully, and her mood is much better. I do my morning recitation without stopping every day: Great Compassion Mantra 7 times, Eighty-Eight Buddhas Great Repentance Text 7 times, Heart Sutra 7 times, Cundi Dharani 21 times, Mantra to Untie Karmic Knots 21 times, and Amitabha Pure Land Rebirth Mantra 21 times. After that, I proceeded to recite for my daughter the Eighty-Eight Buddhas Great Repentance Text 7 times, Heart Sutra 7 times, Great Compassion Mantra 7 times, and Mantra to Untie Karmic Knots 21 times. After breakfast, I began to recite the Little Houses.
Since June 2010, I have recited a total of 433 Little Houses to Jing’s creditor. The Little Houses made the child happy, and she did not lose her temper any more. She knew to hold my hand on the street, afraid that I fell down, and helped me to carry things. She could spend money to buy things now. She knew to serve me food and gave up her seat to me. This is something that has never been done in the past 23 years. My confidence in reciting Little House increased as my child improved day by day. The Little House is so effective, and Master Lu's teachings, the Citta Dharma Door, are invaluable. Until my heart stops and I can no longer recite, I will keep reciting.
As a result, I have been able to stay home and live a normal life after 23 years of torture. It is the Greatly Merciful and Greatly Compassionate Guan Yin Bodhisattva who saved my daughter! It is the Greatly Merciful and Greatly Compassionate Master Lu who saved my family. In 2011, I will continue to release beings. I made a vow to take Jing to return the Ji Le Hospice in Chaoyang Township, Huinan County when the time is right. As they know the past of Jing's, I will show them the present of Jing's. Since there are more than ten mental patients there, I will introduce them to Master Lu's Citta Dharma Door to save those children, so that they can get rid of suffering and gain happiness soon. Wherever I go, I will bring the teachings of Master Lu to save more sentient beings.
Over the last 20 years, the 2011 Spring Festival has been the happiest year of my life. On New Year's Eve, my daughter-in-law picked us up to go to my son's house for a reunion. My daughter was also very happy. She said, “The house is neatly cleaned, nothing is missing. Look at how well my sister-in-law lives.” When I saw that my daughter was like a normal person, the stone that had been hanging in my heart for 23 years finally fell to the ground and my heart was finally at peace. Now I don't go anywhere. I stay at home practicing the Dharma of Master Lu, reciting the scriptures and the Little House.
The above is my personal experience: A person who suffered from mental illness for 23 years has been cured. This is my experience of studying Master Lu's teachings and reciting the Little House, which I would like to share with you. I hope my presentation will encourage parents to take confident steps to save their mentally ill children. Have faith, don't give up, don't fret, don't be confused, and don't feel helpless, because we have a life-saving Master Lu! Master Jun Hong Lu and Guan Yin Bodhisattva can save us no matter what happens if we follow Master Lu and practice well.
I am grateful to Greatly Merciful and Greatly Compassionate Guan Yin Bodhisattva, Greatly Merciful and Greatly Compassionate Master Jun Hong Lu, and I am grateful to layperson He, who guided me into Citta Dharma Door. I am also grateful to my fellow practitioners and kind people who have supported me over the past 20 years.

2023.03.09 13:35 Amddiffynnydd The Havana Syndrome Case Cracked writes Roger Harris
The Havana Syndrome was first reported in Cuba in 2016. The mysterious malady initially afflicted US embassy staff in Havana, especially those attached to intelligence missions. It then spread to Canadian embassy officials. The sudden headaches, debilitating dizziness, and hearing excruciatingly painful sounds struck both at work and at home. Oddly, the Cubans themselves appeared immune to the pathology.
Soon other cases of what the US Defense Department called “anomalous health incidents” (AHIs) were reported in Russia, China, Colombia, Uzbekistan, and then even in the US. This mass psychogenic illness was experienced mostly by US government spies, diplomats, and military personnel all over the world, according to Wikipedia. A “government-wide response” was precipitated with “support groups” established.
The US State Department announced that it considered attention to the Havana Syndrome “an absolute priority.” Secretary of State Antony Blinken believed “there’s nothing we take more seriously.”
The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) concluded in a December 2020 report that the most likely probable cause of the AHIs was pulsed microwave energy.
Inferring blame to Cuba and Russia for the “sonic attacks”
White House chief of staff John Kelly commented: “We believe that the Cuban government could stop the attacks on our diplomats.” In September 2017, non-emergency US embassy personnel and family members were evacuated from Cuba.
President Trump blamed the Cubans and in retaliation for the alleged attacks expelled most of their embassy staff from Washington. His Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said the expulsions were “made due to Cuba’s failure to take appropriate steps to protect our diplomats.”
The Cubans, who had no incentive to provoke their powerful neighbor, denied any culpability. They offered to fully cooperate with US authorities in their investigation of the syndrome.
The Cubans deployed 2,000 scientists and law enforcement officials in their investigation, which was hampered by the refusal by the US government to share medical information on those supposedly afflicted by the Havana Syndrome. Access to residences in Cuba that were purportedly targeted by the “sonic attacks” was also blocked.
But the Yankees had bigger fish to fry. Could the evil foreign adversary beaming the invisible energy waves be none other than the one blamed for stealing Hillary Clinton’s election victory? The so-called “free press,” exemplified by this message from CNN, incessantly reminded us regarding the Havana Syndrome: “The list of known, and suspected, aggressions Russia has carried out against US democracy and American personnel is vast.”
In May 2021, Politico breathlessly reported that unnamed US government officials believe “a notorious Russian spy agency [GRU] may be behind alleged attacks.” “It looks, smells and feels like” the Russians, according to an anonymous “former national security official involved in the investigation.” What more conclusive evidence could one possibly want?
The New Yorker, meanwhile, warned the Havana Syndrome had spread to the White House. “Top officials in both the Trump and the Biden Administrations,” they reported, “privately suspect that Russia is responsible for the Havana Syndrome.”
CIA chief William Burns called the incidents “attacks.” When the bipartisan HAVANA (Helping American Victims Afflicted by Neurological Attacks) ACT of 2021 unanimously passed, the incidents were officially designated as “attacks.”
CNN reported on the act: “Its signing comes as cases continue to rise worldwide,” floating the theory that “Russia is behind” these attacks. In September 2021, the CIA even recalled one of its station chiefs for expressing “skepticism” about the veracity of the “attacks.”
Mysterious sounds associated with the Havana Syndrome
Top State and CIA officials who had gone to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and the National Institutes of Health with the Havana Syndrome complained that the doctors treated them as if they were “crazy.”
Recordings of sounds associated with the Havana Syndrome were publicly released after the noise analysis by the US Navy could not “significantly advance US knowledge about what is harming diplomats.”
Former MIT researcher and sound expert Joe Pompei told NBC News that the reported sound waves could not cause the alleged symptoms. “Unless they had transducers in the bathtub and had the diplomats submerge their heads for a long time, it’s just not possible.”
Biologists Alexander Stubbs at UC Berkeley and Fernando Montealegre-Z at the University of Lincoln scientifically analyzed the recordings, which they identified as the song of a cricket (Anurogryllus celerinictus). Even The New York Times, reporting on the scientific findings, admitted “the sounds linked to the initial complaints may have been a red herring.”
An earlier panel of Cuban scientists similarly concluded that stressful conditions, not a “sonic weapon,” sickened the Yankees. They too identified crickets as a possible source of the mysterious noises.
Case cracked: cognitive impairment is an occupational hazard for US cold warriors
A little over a year ago in January 2022, an interim assessment by the CIA suggested that the Havana Syndrome was NOT a product of “a sustained global campaign by a hostile power.” Stress, environmental conditions, and cognitive impairment were the more likely culprits in the 1000 cases investigated with “analytic rigor, sound tradecraft, and compassion,” in the words of CIA Director William Burns.
However, the interim investigation continued. Finally this month, all seven US intelligence agencies found “available intelligence consistently points against the involvement of US adversaries in causing the reported incidents.”
Still, anti-Cuba zealots did not accept this explanation for the selective pandemic. Senator Marco Rubio rejected the intelligence community’s assessment, tweeting, “it’s hard to accept…it didn’t happen.”
US’s Cuba policy
Cuba may have been exonerated for the Havana Syndrome, but the socialist country is still targeted by the empire for regime-change. The 61-year-old asphyxiating US blockade continues, which puts Washington at odds with the 185 countries that voted in the UN against the unilateral coercive measures with only Uncle Sam and apartheid Israel voting in favor.
In a parting gesture of ill will, Trump re-designated Cuba as a “State Sponsor of Terrorism” eight days before he left the presidency. Obama had rescinded the designation in 2015, originally imposed in 1982 by Reagan.
In 2021, Biden renewed Trump’s designation, ironically citing Cuba’s efforts to broker a peace in Colombia between the government and a guerilla insurgency. Biden backtracked on his campaign promises to reverse Trump’s harsh sanctions against Cuba and return to a process of normalization of relations.
Inclusion on the terrorist list bars Cuba from access to most international finance. “The real purpose of slandering Cuba as ‘terrorist’ is to justify the criminal blockade on Cuba,” according to the National Network on Cuba (NNOC).
Among the grassroots organizations working to get Cuba off the terrorist list are ACER (
https://acere.org/) and the NNOC (
https://nnoc.org/). The latter observes: “Despite the devastating impacts of the US economic blockade, Cuba still has a longer life expectancy, lower infant and maternal mortality rates, better health outcomes, higher literacy, more education, and less violence than in the US.”
The Havana Syndrome, used to falsely accuse Cuba of attacking US personnel, exemplifies how distorted US policy is. Like drug peddlers hooked on their own supply, the spooks and kooks who populate the US governmental apparatus suffered literal physical damage believing the paranoic false propaganda that they push on the populace to justify the empire’s forever wars and brutal regime-change intrigues.

2023.02.03 10:55 normandus Research Paper: Conflict and Change in Americas Health Care System
Abstract
This research paper investigates Americas’ health care policy. It discusses the conflicts and changes that have occurred in the health care system. Health conflicts have emerged because of the high cost of health care and quality of healthcare. This has caused policymakers to come up with programs that allow people to obtain insurance and get access health care. These programs include: Medicare, Medicaid, Veteran Health Care, Indian Health Service, National Institute of health, State Children’s Health Insurance Program, and Tricare. These programs enable citizens to have access to healthcare at subsidized costs. The programs have been successful. However, there is a need to improve access for all and eliminate eligibility criteria. Moreover, there is a need for improved quality, efficiency, and the number of health care providers.
Introduction
United States spends a large portion of its GDP to support healthcare provision throughout the regions. The huge support to healthcare is motivated by the need to support the healthcare needs of its citizens and promote good health. America’s healthcare system has experienced conflicts in the process of actualizing healthcare programs that enable a large number of people to access medical care. This research will investigate the conflicts and changes in America’s healthcare system, while evaluating the health care policies that have emerged in different times. It will provide a discussion of major stakeholders and recommend policy solutions that will cause reforms to the health system.
Methodology
The research will review academic literature documented on America’s healthcare system. This includes academic review, medical books and scholarly research on the healthcare system. It will investigate the policies as stipulated by the United States government.
Health Policy Research Findings
The department of health in America has worked towards making healthcare accessible and available to all. Healthcare is provided by different legal entities in the United States. They include the private and government-owned institutions. American budget has given huge allocations of the budget to the health sector to enable Americans to access affordable and quality healthcare. The private sector controls the largest section of the healthcare system. The government has facilitated healthcare by providing health insurance, which is used in the public healthcare system. Some of the health care programs that facilitate healthcare services include Medicare, Veteran Health Administration, Tricare, Children Health Insurance Program, and Medicaid (Wilper et al, 2009).
The need to deal with public health has been at the center of America’s healthcare system. Various policies have been adopted at different times to make health care accessible, affordable as well as improve the quality. Healthcare policy has forced Americans to engage in long debates over making the healthcare system better (WHO, 2011).
Dominowski (2012, p. 1) states that conflict and change in America’s health care system began in the early 20th century. This was the period when President Roosevelt implemented the National Health Insurance. He had experienced challenges in health and was believed to be informed in dealing with existing issues. After the First World War, which led to the great depression, America turned to Social Security in 1935. Social security benefited the majority of the low-income people and those who lived in poverty, like elderly people.
In 1942, President Roosevelt ordered that there would be regulation of remunerations and control of prices. This was to facilitate higher pay so that employees would be able to purchase insurance. National Health Insurance was revived, and citizens were allowed to volunteer and pay in 1945. This did not thrive because another policy on American Medical Association was created and replaced. The major concern was that healthcare was increasingly becoming costly, and those who needed it most could not access it. This included the elderly, children, disabled, and pregnant women. In 1965, Medicare was created for the elderly while Medicaid was created for the poor citizens. American Medical association was replaced despite facing political challenges (Selden and Sing, 2002).
In 1974, President Nixon gave a proposition that all employers should provide insurance for employees. This plan would have benefited all people in the region if had been implemented. This is because the proposition required all people to be insured. Nixon was faced with the Westgate Scandal, and the proposition was not enacted. Mandatory healthcare insurance was not successfully implemented. National healthcare, which persisted, was challenged by politics where citizens were misled that medical insurance deprived people of their social freedom. Consolidated Omnibus Reconciliation Act was enacted. The act enabled employees to use their employer’s insurance cover for a while after losing their employment. Medicare was further expanded in 1988 so to allow senior citizens to access prescribed medicines and care.
In 1992, President Bush caused reforms to the National Healthcare system. The actions were motivated by the reality in medical care where costs were very high, depriving Americans of their financial capabilities in the competitive world market. The reforms included tax credit on health insurance for families with low income. The tax was to empower and prompt citizens to embrace health insurance. Insurance market reforms implied that people with existing medical problems could access insurance. The policies were met by politics and did not thrive as expected. President Clinton developed a policy where employers would take the burden of paying health insurance for their employees. This plan was challenged by many people and did not succeed. Opposition from the healthcare and businesspeople argued that people should carry the burden of paying for their healthcare needs (Anderson, 2003).
In 2003, Bush was able to expand a policy that included citizens to access medicines from the Medicare Insurance Policy. President Obama has successfully implemented health policies that enable a large number of citizens to access care. The policy increased accessibility to quality healthcare in the region. President Obama received support from the people, and since that time the plan had been implemented. The Affordable Care Act of 2010 has encouraged many people to access medical care. People with preexisting medical problems should not have problems with affording services. This policy has been challenged by the Supreme Court. People are responsible for making their insurance plans. Different states in America have various facilities and options that enable all people to get quality health care.
The government initiated programs that would enable people to access medical care because a large number of its population was in need of quality care which was not affordable. Moreover, medical care was revealed as one of the causes of bankruptcy because of the enormous medical expenses. The cost of health was high, and some of the people could not access medical care.
Conflicts in the healthcare system emerged because of the existing health policies. There was a need to reform the health care system so that American citizens could access healthcare, get the right care, obtain fairness and equality, have quality, and efficient healthcare. Additionally, it was necessary to enable choice, cost-effective, affordable, quality, valuable, and efficient care in all institutions. Conflict led to the debate in the United States about healthcare. There were complaints that the delivery of the health care system was not giving equivalent value to the costs spent. There was a concern about increased infant mortality rate and reduced life expectancy compared to the other developed countries. The cost of health care is very high in the United States and is not guaranteed for all citizens. The most appropriate way to access medical care is by getting medical insurance. Those who do not have medical insurance cannot benefit from medical care. This leads to the loss of lives. Those who are without medical insurance depend on charity. Charity may come in the form of initiatives from religious organizations, non-profit organizations, donations, and funds from government subsidiaries. Some states have programs where patients who cannot pay for their medical care are funded. The majority of these people are the poor and the elderly.
The healthcare system is funded by the government and insurance plans. Majority of American citizens are insured through several schemes including employment insurance schemes, next of kin or parent schemes, individual arrangements, or government programs. The challenge with the insurance is that there are laid down requirements for eligibility. The conflict emerges because not all Americans are eligible even for the government programs. Some of the insurance programs and companies pay a percentage of the hospital expenses while the city pays the other percentage.
Other conflicts emerge because the medical insurance does not cover all aspects that need health care. Some insurance companies and government programs require one to purchase insurance for eye care, dental care, maternity, prescription, and other specialized care services. Citizens can only access healthcare facilities for which they are covered with insurance. The patient is required to pay for the facilities separately. However, the insurance makes these services affordable to people. The cost of consultation for one with insurance is lower than for those who pay from the pocket. This is because the insurance companies negotiate discounts for their patients. The negotiations have caused another challenge, where some health care providers deny patients care because of their insurance company or program. Consequently, those who are with government insurance or who negotiate costs with insurance companies may find it difficult to obtain specialized medical services.
The Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act are concerned with the challenges experienced in the healthcare system because of problems in funding. This act stipulates that all health care institutions should provide care to all patients without discriminating against them because of their ability to meet the costs of emergency cases. The act does not cover individuals who are unable to pay for their healthcare outside the emergency room. The act does not include access to preventive care or access to a physician who provides primary care. Emergency care is more costly than regular visits to the consultation. In most cases, this results from the lack of continuing care for an existing ailment. Emergency care also involves accidents. Emergency rooms are often busy, and separated from regular care where people do not stand in a queue. It has been noted that the emergency department is often busy and sometimes ambulances are redirected (Christopher, 2001).
There are other conflicts that emerge because the healthcare providers, and healthcare institutions receive remuneration and pay according to the quality of work they make available. This means that many tests are being done on patients when they visit hospitals. The incentives argue that it is safe to have more tests than when no tests are done. This leads to a conflict of interest. There is a need to have a limitation on the liabilities of the hospital as well as the healthcare providers. The contrast of the conflicting interests is that a number of American citizens lose their lives in hospitals because of neglect from the healthcare providers in the hospital. A large number of tests are conducted because patients are under insurance cover. The costs incurred in the number of tests are extended to the patients when the cost of purchasing an insurance cover is increased. The insurance companies encourage people to pay premiums, and when they suffer from terminal ailments, they withdraw the cover. Patients suffering from heart disease, HIV, and cancer do not enjoy insurance cover for such ailments. The healthcare system and the insurance companies work hand in hand, yet both are profit-oriented companies.
Majority of the healthcare facilities are owned by the private sector, and this dictates how healthcare services are distributed. Other shareholders in healthcare facilities include states, counties, and the federal government. There is a lack of a national system of government where all citizens are eligible to access healthcare. Some of the local hospitals owned by the government are open to all.
Different groups of people get healthcare from different organizations. The military healthcare service, through the department of defense, offers services where the military personnel receive healthcare. The healthcare is funded by the military department. Veteran Administration Hospitals are funded by the Veteran Health Administration. Veterans are eligible for health services they have not accessed when serving. Recognized tribes from the Native Americans get healthcare services from Indian Health Service. Hospices are hospitals providing specialized care to the terminally ill patients. Hospices are given charity for patients who may not live long due to their conditions. The government partly funds hospitals that deal with prenatal care and family planning.
Another conflict occurs between equality and quality care. The disparity in healthcare services in different healthcare institutions is very different leading to varying outcomes. The medical resources are not equally distributed. The number of healthcare providers in health institutions is very low compared to the number of patients. The hospitals offer different amenities and income for the healthcare providers, who select the most favorable opportunity. The Affordable Care Act has caused many people to access healthcare. This increases the load of work for the healthcare workers. The uninsured citizens are likely to delay medical intervention and only access it in the time of emergency. Delayed medical intervention may lead to other complications or development of related ailments (Fuchs, 2004).
Care coordination is an area of conflict. Patients do not follow up on one line of care and do not keep track of their health care. Patients take a long time waiting for their diagnosis and undergoing tests. Patients lose medical documents and end up undergoing some tests when the test results are lost. The patients may not always have a smooth interaction with those who provide them with the necessary care. Patients often get offended due to the kind of treatment they get while receiving healthcare services. Additionally, there are additional administrative costs that are involved in the healthcare system. The hospital, insurance companies, government, and the patients need to go through the administration before healthcare provision is complete. Administrative costs vary from one institution to another (Wennberg and Wennberg, 2003). This means that some people pay more administrative costs than others.
There are public programs that support medical care. The programs cover children, elderly, veterans, the disabled, and those who live in poverty. Medicare is a government program where those who are older than sixty-five years of age and the disabled can be covered. Medicaid is administered by the states and allows people with low income to access medical care. It covers pregnant women, the disabled, and the children. The insurance program targets children who cannot afford costly healthcare. Tricare is a medical insurance for military personnel, which enables them to access healthcare services from civilian hospitals. Veteran Administration is a program that enables veterans access healthcare, together with their family, and survivors in hospitals. National Institute of Health gives medical care to patients who enroll themselves for research purposes and do not pay. There are various community clinics that are funded by the government.
Pharmaceuticals and medical equipment are manufactured by privately-owned companies. Both the public and private sectors participation in the research by funding research. The American healthcare system gives research a lot of importance. Changes and growth in the healthcare sector are facilitated by increased funding in hospitals through insurance and changes in technology (Wennberg et al, 2006).
Healthcare and Education Act of 2010 is a policy that promotes healthcare reform. The objective is to facilitate healthcare information that will benefit citizens. Information enables citizens to know their rights, entitlement, opportunities, and healthcare facilities that are available in the healthcare system.
Conclusion
The American health care system has developed policies that enable access to affordable and quality health care. The policies emerged because of the high cost of healthcare. Because very few people could access health care, different policies were adopted at different times to alleviate the cost and to make it accessible to many. The policies have encouraged people to get insurance covers and access health care at a subsidized cost. Programs such as Medicare, Medicaid, Veteran Health Care, Indian Health Service, National Institute of health, State Children’s Health Insurance Program, and Tricare have enabled people with low income, disabled, pregnant mothers, children and the elderly citizens to get health care. Those who cannot afford healthcare benefit from government programs, donations, and charity from different organizations. Policies have enabled people to access emergency medical care, even when they are not able to pay for it. The policies have also enabled quality and improved care because of supportive funding from the government.
Recommendations
With the new policies in place, the number of patients visiting hospitals is likely to increase. It is necessary to have more healthcare providers recruited in the hospitals to help provide services when necessary. Doctors can follow ethics and avoid unnecessary tests that are used to generate more profit. The hospitals should emphasize quality care and efficiency in providing health care. There is a need for a program that will enable all citizens’ access care, irrespective of their economic status (US Department of Health and Human Services, 2004).

2023.02.02 18:59 otatopay The Lock on the Gates of Hell
Atop the clouds: gates, tall and magnificent.
Behind the gates: a multitude of the heavenly host, flashes of lightning and rumblings and peals of thunder, a woman clothed with the sun, a dazzling light.
Beside the gates: a man with a white beard, clad in blue and yellow robes, holding a set of keys.
In front of the gates: another man, wearing sweatpants.
"Is this a dream? This doesn't feel like a dream", yawns the man in sweatpants, as he tries to rub the sleep out of his eyes.
"No, my son. This is Heaven."
"Heaven? I don't believe in Heaven."
"Yes, this is Heaven. Home of the Church Triumphant. The place where every tear is wiped from your eyes, where there is no death or mourning or crying or pain. Paradise."
"Christian Heaven?"
"Yes. Eternity with God forever."
"I don't know if I like that idea."
"Why not?"
"Well, not to be offensive or anything, but God is sort of a jerk. I mean, He's got some very antiquated views about women, and he's really homophobic. A lot of the stuff He says just doesn't make any sense - I mean, no pork allowed for fourteen hundred years - and then suddenly it's okay? Plus, look at all the war crimes committed in His name in Joshua's time."
"Doubting is a normal part of a faith journey - don't worry. Solomon is already up here, and we told him you'd be coming along soon, so we blocked off the next 170 years on his calendar so that he can explain this stuff to you."
"That sounds... unrealistic..."
"Time works differently here."
"Look, I'm sorry to inconvenience you, but I really just don't believe any of this stuff. I spent too much of my childhood going to church stuff and learning about Palestinian myths and outdated sacrificial regulations and antiquated poetry, and if Heaven is just a bunch of goody-goody church people singing praise and worship songs and playing harps, then I'd rather not."
"You'd rather be in Hell than go to Heaven? You'd rather be deprived of the beatific vision, subjected to unending senseless sensory torment, than spend the rest of your eternal existence enjoying the supernatural joys of the World to Come and blissfully beholding the face of God?
"Yes, I'd rather. I'd like to go to the other place, if it's all the same to you."
"It's not all the same to me."
"Whatever. I'd like to go to the other place."
Loud cries of sorrow echo forth from the multitude of the heavenly host. The flashes of lightning and rumblings and peals of thunder are overshadowed by the melancholy sound of torrential rainfall. The woman clothed with the sun sheds a single tear and clasps her face in her hands. The dazzling light flickers.
The man in sweatpants vanishes in a puff of brimstone.
The doors of hell are locked on the inside. -----
I don't much like this popular Christian conception of how Hell works. It seems to fly in the face of plain Scriptural teaching.
‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am in agony in these flames.’ Does the rich man
want to be tormented forever?
I tell you, many will come from east and west and will eat with Abraham and Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven, while the heirs of the kingdom will be thrown into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Do the Jews who reject Christ
want to be consigned to the outer darkness?
Later the other bridesmaids came also, saying, ‘Lord, lord, open to us.' Do the negligent bridesmaids
want to miss the wedding feast of the Lamb?
Do those souls bound for hell
want to be there?
-----
There's an old explanation for Jesus' parable about
a camel going through the eye of a needle. Back in first-century Israel, there was a gate in the Jerusalem city wall called the "Eye of the Needle Gate", or something along those lines. The gate was thin - only one camelspan wide. If you were a camel-riding traveler and you decided to enter Jerusalem via the Eye of the Needle Gate, you'd need to dismount, take all of your baggage off of the camel, and then lead the baggage-less camel through the gate.
(This explanation of Jesus' parable is
probably apocryphal, but it makes for a good metaphor.)
The wrong question to ask:
what do you love?
You love your baggage, and you'd also love to get inside Jerusalem with your camel. Baggage is good, Jerusalem is good. You love
both. Both. Both is good. The right question to ask:
which do you love more? You've got the option of receiving the good of keeping your baggage, and you've got the option of receiving the good of getting into Jerusalem. You
want both; you have to pick one. The baggage is the lesser good; valuing the lesser good over the greater good is evil. Baggage is good; baggage
as opposed to Jerusalem isn't.
Another right question to ask:
as opposed to what? -----
A widely quoted argument for universalism or quasi-universalism: ubiquitous religious values.
Christianity says: love God, honor your parents, don't murder, don't lie, don't steal. So do most other religions. Most faith communities have the same basic moral values, aside from a few minor little details like "which prophet was the final and most important prophet" or "which holy books should we revere" or "which centuries-old dead language is most appropriate for liturgical use" or "is enjoying a bacon cheeseburger and a beer an abomination to the LORD". Ergo, there's no real difference - is there?
A case study: Confucianism places a great importance on filial piety - also known on honoring one's parents. Consider
The Twenty-four Filial Exemplars - a classic text of Confucian filial piety. (
Wikipedia synopsis if you don't want to read the full text.) If you're a devoted Confucian, it's very, very important that you honor your parents. More important than lots of other things.
From the aforementioned Exemplars:
Burying His Son To Save His Mother: Guo Ju
Guo Ju lived during the Han Dynasty with his wife, his aging mother, and their three-year-old son. The household was extremely poor, and the four of them often found it difficult to make ends meet. There was rarely enough food to go around. The grandmother, being fond of the baby, would often take her scanty portion of food and feed it to her grandson. She never got enough nutrition and frequently went hungry. As the baby grew, the elderly woman's health deteriorated, and before long, she fell sick.
Since Guo Ju could afford neither nutritious food nor medicine to heal his mother, his heart felt great consternation. He discussed the situation with his wife, saying, "We are unfilial children. We can't feed our mother properly, and now she is sick! What are we going to do?" His wife had no solution. Guo Ju couldn't sleep at night, wrestling with his problem. His heart was agitated and upset.
In desperation, finally he resolved to part with his own son, in order to serve his first allegiance, his mother, in proper fashion, during the final days of her life. "Perhaps we can have more children in the future," he told his wife, "but mother in her old age deserves our best offerings and care. Don't you agree?"
Guo Ju's wife, although she loved her infant son, was also a devoted filial daughter. Nodding her head and weeping with grief, she agreed to go along with the heart-rending solution to their problem. The two of them carried the infant into the back yard, and with a planter's hoe, Guo Ju dug a hole in the earth. Before he had dug down three feet, he heard a loud thunk! and felt something solid beneath the hoe-blade. He dug more carefully, and unearthed a sturdy metal chest. Opening the cover, to their astonishment, they discovered a pile of golden coins and silver bars, worth a king's ransom. "Oh, look!" the husband and wife exclaimed. Written on top of the casket was a sentence: "A gift to the filial son Guo Ju."
The couple took the fortune in gold to the local magistrate, but owing to the inscription on the lid, and the unusual circumstances surrounding its appearance, the government officials returned the money to the husband and wife. Guo Ju promptly found a doctor and medicine for his mother, and was able to keep his son alive. The family ever after had sufficient supply of life's necessities and enjoyed the blessings due to filial children.
So, to briefly recap: Guo Ju is a poor man with a young son and a malnourished grandmother. Guo Ju doesn't have enough food to feed both his son and grandmother, so he decides to bury his son alive in order to save his grandmother. The gods reward his act of filial piety by making a chest of gold appear in the destined grave of Guo Ju's son. Guo Ju takes the money, uses it to feed both his grandmother and his son, and everyone lives happily ever after.
Or, to poetically recap from the actual Exemplar:
Guo Ju wished to serve his aging mother;
He buried his son, so that she might live,
The gods rewarded him with golden coins;
Their brilliant gleam lit up his humble hut.
There are a number of stories like this in the Exemplars, asserting the supremacy of filial piety over other virtues: Dong Yong selling himself into slavery to pay for his father's funeral expenses, Lu Ji stealing oranges to take home to his mother, Ding Lan divorcing his wife for pricking the wooden images of his parents with a needle.
Filial piety above personal freedom. Filial piety above property rights. Filial piety above marital harmony.
Filial piety above
everything else.
Christianity encourages filial piety - but only to a point. Other virtues trump respect for parents, which is why we don't remember the Bible story of
Solomon docilely acceding to Bathsheba's request to give Adonijah the hand of Abishag in marriage.
-----
And speaking of marriage: another case study.
Christianity places a great importance on the marriage bond. Catholicism demands that baptized spouses remain faithful to each other until death regardless of circumstance. Even outside of Rome, Protestant and Orthodox churches generally only sanction remarriage under circumstances of adultery, abuse or abandonment - or other such extreme situations. Divorce, by any reasonably orthodox Biblical interpretation, is a method of last resort; sanctity of marriage and all that.
I'm fortunate to have had good marital role models in my parents, who married in and raised my siblings and I in a faith-filled environment, loved and respected each other, and have generally continued to live out the model of a holy Christian marriage.
When I think of what the sanctity of marriage means, I don't think of my parents. I think of another sort of married couple I know - who I'll call Jack and Jill.
Jack is old, cantankerous, and has the emotional depth of a used playing card. Jill is not-quite-as-old, marginally smarter than Jack, and has unachieved ambitions and undiagnosed mental health issues. Jill worries a lot about Jack's long-ignored physical health issues; Jack thinks that this is because Jill wants to control him, and he's probably half right and probably half wrong. Jack likes to talk about his high-school dating history when he thinks Jill isn't in the room. Jill likes to fuss over a million little things like what shade of mauve the new curtains ought to be or how the living room furniture ought to be organized or which birthday card ought to be purchased for Jill's grand-niece or what sorts of cucumber-based vegetarian appetizers ought to be served to Jill's visiting-from-out-of-town friends, and she also likes to thoroughly involve Jack in these decisions, which has given Jack lots of practice at rolling his eyes and shrugging and going off and watching television.
(Jack and Jill aren't an exact description of any particular two people - they're a rough composite of various acquaintances. You probably know a couple like them.)
It's easy to say, "marriage is sacred, here's why", and point at quasi-perfect Christian couples. It's hard to say the same thing and point at Jack and Jill.
Sometimes it isn't just cantankerousness and fastidiousness, though. Sometimes it's something worse.
In high school, I sat in on a married couples' retreat at a small rural church. There was a video playing, about a couple that was struggling with their marriage, and how they were working and praying through their struggles. The root of the problem: during one weekday afternoon, the wife was at home, enjoying a typical upper-middle-class suburban existence and bathing their baby. During the course of the baby's bath, she got a phone call, and decided to pop up and answer said phone call, leaving the baby in a secure child-safety device in the bathtub, which turned out to not be so secure after all.
The baby
drowned.
Not to say that nobody should ever leave their spouse for any reason whatsoever (important note:
all three branches of Christianity say that it's
not a sin to divorce an abusive spouse), but - at one extreme, you've got the woman that shows up to every family get-together with a limp and two black eyes saying, "I can change him, I believe in us", and at the other extreme, you've got the woman that's on the phone with her divorce lawyer, preparing to file her third divorce because, "he's a morning person, I'm a night owl, he's a Pisces, I'm an Aries, and we simply aren't working out". You've got to draw the line
somewhere.
If you draw the line at "irreconcilable differences", if you tell your unhappily-married friend that "not doing any laundry for a month is basically emotional manipulation, you deserve so much better, I know a great divorce lawyer", then you've got the same secular values as everybody else: being married is good, being happy is better.
Or, to quote
Louis C.K.: "Divorce is always good news. I know that sounds weird, but it’s true because no good marriage has ever ended in divorce. It’s really that simple."
Having a happy marriage - or, more generally, a happy life - is a good thing. It's a good thing to come home to a happy home, your own personal safe space, with everything organized and cleaned just the way you like it, without bickering or arguments or passive-aggressive comments about weight or body odor or nasal hair or back hair or a bathroom that hasn't been cleaned since the Clinton administration.
Staying married is also a good thing. Which good thing takes precedence?
Jack and Jill aren't marital role models because they've stayed together. Jack and Jill are marital role models because they've stayed together, despite everything - and helped each other towards Heaven in the process.
Beit Hillel allowed a man to divorce his wife
if she burnt his food; Rabbi Akiva allowed divorce
even if a man found another woman attractive. The Prophet Muhammad divorced Hafsah bint Umar
because she disclosed one of his secrets. When does Jesus allow divorce?
-----
"Well, that sounds great in theory, choosing greater goods like marital sanctity over lesser goods like parental blessings and personal comfort, but what about cases where there is no lesser good? What about belief systems with extremely wicked practices - like, oh, I don't know... child sacrifice?"
It's a good question. If you divorce your wife because your parents don't like her and because she won't stop starting fights over whose turn it is to do the dishes, then you have the warm approval of your parents and a happy home to relax and unwind in. If you sacrifice your child to Molech, then you have a dead child and Molech won't give you anything nice in exchange because he isn't real.
Caananites wouldn't know that, obviously, but Israelites should. Solomon wrote Proverbs, Ecclesiastes and Song of Songs, and then proceeded to
build a high place for Molech; on one hand, the Bible doesn't explicitly say that Solomon approved of or practiced child sacrifice, but on the other hand, Molech. Also on the other hand, Solomon had
700 wives and 300 concubines and somehow only
two daughters and
one son (two sons if you count
Menelik I!) are recorded as having made it to adulthood.
Solomon's royal descendants weren't much better. Ahaz
had Isaiah as a counselor, but Ahaz still
made his son pass through fire. Isaiah probably gave Ahaz's son and successor Manasseh some parenting advice too, which probably didn't stick because Manasseh
sawed Isaiah in half and also
sacrificed his children in the Valley of Ben Hinnom (
also known as Gehenna)), and Manasseh's son Amon
walked in all the way in which his father walked. Jeconiah - the last king in
Matthew's genealogy to rule before the exile -
ruled as an eight-year-old for less than four months and
still managed to be cursed by Jeremiah. (Translations vary regarding
Jeconiah's exact age, but it's probably safe to say that you wouldn't want to be his second-grade classmate.)
Imagine living three thousand years ago and standing at the foot of the throne of Solomon:
"Why are you
doing that?"
"Why wouldn't I be doing that?"
"It's an abomination! It's a horrible sin!"
"No it isn't."
"Yes it is -
you shall not murder! That's murder!"
"No, it isn't. Murder means taking a life illegitimately. There are lots of times when Moses
allowed for a life to be taken legitimately."
"Moses
forbids child sacrifice to Molech!"
"Your Hebrew knowledge is lacking. The word 'Molech' is written in Hebrew as M-L-K -
melek, the king.
Any of the people of Israel, or of the aliens who reside in Israel, who give any of their offspring to the king shall be put to death. I'm not sacrificing to myself; I'm sacrificing to God."
"You can't just sit there and act like you're the wisest man in the world. God doesn't command us to sacrifice our children!"
"Au contraire; I'm not acting. Abraham was
commanded by God to sacrifice Isaac; Jephthah
sacrificed his daughter. God calls us to sacrifice everything and follow Him - even the things we love most. You're over there sacrificing - what - a sheep? I'm giving up my own son."
(In defense of this somewhat contrived scenario: firstly, Solomon would have had to have some sort of theological justification for his actions, and secondly, Scriptural misinterpretation is at least as old as
Ahaz.)
Even concerning acts of extreme immorality, there is still lesser good to be found: the lesser good of following parts of Scripture and sacrificing everything for God, versus the greater good of following all the words and intents of Scripture and not sacrificing children. Or, to use modern atrocities as examples: the lesser good of finding an outlet for your anxiety and enjoying yourself versus the greater good of
the lives of multiple young women in the Pacific Northwest, or the lesser good of promoting the sovereignty and national pride of Russia versus the greater good of not invading Ukraine. Strain out a gnat, swallow a camel.
-----
I know that this essay has been fairly depressing at parts, so I'd like to end on a high note.
If I'm bad because I want to do bad things - if my foundation's built on wood and straw - then there's going to be nothing left after the fire burns it away. But If I'm bad because I want to do lesser good things - if I'm bad because I don't have my priorities straight, because I love the greater good less and the lesser good more, then maybe it's just a matter of rearranging and polishing off the twisted bits of gold and silver until there's a crown.
If a man has nothing good in his heart, then he's got no hope of getting to Heaven - but if there's a speck of good, however twisted, then there's a speck of a chance.

2023.02.02 01:02 Verastahl Life in the City.
“They put something in the water, you know.”
The man’s voice, soft and yet still shrill in my ear, had woken me from a gentle, rocking slumber. Opening my eyes, I tried to get my bearings even as they started to water and my gorge began to rise. Oh
God. What was that
taste? Thick and smoky and bitter, I gagged a little as I took in enough to realize I was on a city bus. How did I get here? And what was this man saying?
I looked over at him and saw right away he was insane. A thrill of confused fear ran through me. He clearly expected a response, and I thought it best to play along.
“The water?”
He furrowed his brow in frustration as he dug a knuckle into his left nostril with a disdainful sniff. “Yes,
yes, the water. Put drugs in it to make us docile.” He gestured at the bus passengers. Some were asleep as I’d been, while others were staring dully out the window or into their phones, eyes searching the glass for other wheres than here.
I wanted to change seats, but didn’t quite dare. “You don’t say.”
His nostrils went red as they flared. “I
do say. I
do say. They don’t want us thinking. Realizing what this place is. They just want us to blindly breathe and fuck and give in. Eat the shit they feed us.”
I was so drawn in by his strange passion that I didn’t realize the bus had come to a stop until the man jumped up into the center aisle. Glancing around uncertainly, I realized I was actually nervous about him leaving me alone. Leaning forward with a flush in my cheeks, I whispered to him, “Where are we?”
The man let out a shriek of laughter. “Where are we?” Stomping to the front of the bus, he ran down the steps and out to the sidewalk before running around the bus and up to my window. “Where are we?” He glanced to his right, grin widening as he rolled his eyes back to me. “We’re in Hell.”
The truck didn’t even slow down when it hit him. I heard the wet thudding scrape of him being drug between the wheels for a few yards before he tumbled out in a wet pile on up the road. A few people murmured or exclaimed, but there were no real screams at first. It was only when they saw each other that the rest of the passengers all started squawking like startled birds. I had the thought that no one really cared. There was no real fear or sadness, just performance for the sake of being seen or heard, or some insane impulse like a tuning fork that has been struck and now must hum along until enough time has passed to draw stillness back to it again.
I didn’t scream. I hated the sound of it all, and besides, I was distracted by what I had noticed in the seat next to me. What my brief companion had left behind. It was a notepad filled with tight lines of cursive that were very legible despite their small stature. It started with:
Fourth set of notes for article I say fourth, though I can’t say for sure. These fuckers keep swiping them when they can. They want me to forget who I am and why I’m here. Make me think I’m like these poor people they’ve got trapped here. But I won’t. I can’t. People have to know that this place exists. I think they’re pumping the stuff out in mists now. I smell medicine smells coming through the sewer grates. Fucking with my hed. Got to keep it together. I’m Peter Maywing. I’m a freelance investigative journalist that has covered two wars, a dozen corporate cover-ups, and stood down the fucking government when they came asking for my people. My sources. Shit. I need to get out of here soon. Why hasn’t anyone gotten us out of here yet? I think months have passed. Just found this notebook again. I’d put the date or time, but I don’t know when it is. There aren’t any clocks or calendars here, and if you ask anyone about them, they just laugh. The only reason I remembered who I was is because Clint remembered who *he was and came and found me. We have to escape.*
Heart pounding, I glanced around to see if anyone was looking at me. They weren’t. Most had sat back down, though a few were still yipping like coyotes settling down for the night. Shuddering, I stuffed the notebook under my jacket and got off the bus.
Nothing looked familiar here. Not the places or the people, or even the air, which had an odd, minty smell when the wind blew right. Pulling my scarf up to my face, I walked along for a few minutes before finding a small diner to duck into. I had no money in my pockets, but I did have a white card, and when I pulled it out questioningly, the waitress took it with a nod and brought it and a cup of coffee back to the table. Once I was sure no one was paying attention, I pulled out the notebook and kept reading.
The Buddy System. That was always our idea. Me and Clint would go in separately, but we’d watch each other’s backs and make sure we both got out, or if shit went sideways, that at least one of us did. But they caught on to our plan, or they always knew. Now they just reset us periodically, like we’re computers that are acting up. Not exactly wiping the hard drive, but it’s harder to get back the important stuff every time I wake up somewhere not knowing who or where I am. I need to hide this somewhere safe.
I think I’ve been reset at least twice since I last wrote in this thing. The real me, my life and memories, why I’m here? It’s all like I’m remembering the memory of a dream. There are so many layers between me and the truth that everything is fuzzy. Clint has been reset almost as much as me, but he takes it better. He’s always been more resilient I think. I’m really scared, and I think if they wipe me again I won’t get myself back.
So I need to write it down right now. Maybe for me, but probably for you, Clint. If I see I’m not going to make it, if I can see it coming early enough, I’ll try to find you. On a bus or at your house, or somewhere. And I’ll leave this for you before I go. Because I have to go, buddy. I can’t take it in here any more. I have to get out, one way or another.
I am Peter Maywing. You are Clint Thurman. We are both writers and journalists. You got a tip about a secret place where numerous forces around the world were shipping off their lunatics and their undesireables to live. Not a prison or an institution, but an entire city. A sealed world away from everything where the hidden remain so.
They drug our food and water. Keep us confused and docile while doing a cruel mimicry of a real human life. It works well most of the time, but there are always episodes. People break down and start screaming or crying. Or hurting each other. Or stripping off naked. Or going on killing sprees. But everyone is so numb that no one really pays attention to what’s wrong around them for very long. These journals have been my intermittent lifeline, but I feel my grip slipping. You need to get out with or without me. Get out and tell what this place is. It’s Hell.
I think I’ll start drinking my piss. I know that sounds crazy. But I think if I drink my own fluid I’ll be more me? Because I don’t know who Me is anymore.
Piss and shit. Shit and piss. I only like one and the other I’d miss.
I just read what I writed. I can’t wait any longer. I have to find you. Give you a chance before I go bye. Stay me long enough to warn you.
I see you. They’re loading you and four other people onto the bus. I got you. The Buddy System, remember? Pissing shitters. Taking our air.
That was the last entry. I reread it all three more times, and every time I remembered a bit more. He was right, wasn’t he? We were journalists. This was an investigation. We were going to help people and get this all shut down. But first I had to escape.
I was terrified, but maybe because of the drugs they gave us, it was all in a very detached way. Swishing around the last of my coffee to get rid of the foulness on my tongue, I stuffed the notebook into my jacket and headed out onto the street.
The card was some kind of debit card I guessed. I was able to take taxis all over the city that afternoon. I didn’t know who was a patient and who was a guard, so I had to give vague directions, but my real intention was to see the edges of the city. How far did it go and what was the security like there? If it was made by humans it was flawed, and I could find some mistake to exploit if I was smart and patient.
Or so I thought. But everywhere I went, there were just roads that ended in walls, not of stone or concrete, but of glass. Black, featureless glass that went up as high as I could see. How was that even possible? How could you build something like that and have it not blow over or collapse under its own weight?
My stomach was churning as I hailed my fourth taxi. Evening was creeping in now and the light would be gone soon, but I still had South left. Maybe that’s where everything came and went. It took me a few minutes to realize that instead of taking me that way, the driver was headed to the heart of the City.
“Um, I think you’re turned around. I said I wanted to go to the southern edge of the City.”
The man behind the glass chuckled. “Oh, I heard you. But the radio man said take you to the Station, so to the Station you go.”
Heart pounding, I leaned forward. “What? Who’s the radio man?”
Another chuckle. “The man on the radio, of course.”
I slammed a fist into the thick pane between us. “Goddamn it. What’s the Station then?”
His eyes were yellowed and cruel when he found mine in the mirror. “It’s where they correct you.”
They pulled me from the taxi easily, using just enough force to get me to comply, no more or less. I’d been driven to an underground garage beneath a huge monolithic building I couldn’t recall in my spotty memory. Had it always been there, or had it raised up like a dragon’s head when it caught my scent?
What the fuck was wrong with me. I needed to stay sane and find a way out of this.
They drug me through several floors and twisting corridors before strapping me down to a chair in a black chamber lined with tapestries of some kind. Looking closer, I started to retch. They weren’t tapestries. They were the skins of people—whole skins, flayed from their bodies, stretched and dried before being hung on display. Trembling, I felt my bowels loosen slightly as a woman walked in from the far end of the room and made her way to me.
“Hello, Tony.”
I swallowed. “My name…My name isn’t Tony. It’s Clint. I-I’m Clinton Thurman. I know who I am.”
Pulling up a chair from outside of my vision, she clucked her tongue as she studied me with a concerned look on her face. “Oh, Tony. Not this again.” She shook her head and let out a small sigh. “I don’t blame you. I don’t. I honestly want to blame Peter, but he wasn’t well either was he? And my mother always said you don’t speak ill of the dead.” Leaning forward, she put a cool hand on my forehead. “But he is the one that always inflamed your delusions, wasn’t he? What was it this time? You were spies? On a t.v. show? What?”
I blinked, feeling tears in the corners of my eyes. “We…we’re reporters.”
She lifted her eyebrows. “Ah, that one. So you’re reporters. What’re you reporting on? The weather?”
Frowning at her, I shook my head. “I’m not telling you anything.”
The woman smiled at me. “That’s fine, Tony. I don’t need you to. I’ll tell you. According to Peter, you’re both investigative journalists, right? Here to expose the City as some cruel prison where the dark forces of the world hide their unmentionables? Is that about right?”
I felt a tear sliding down my cheek as I stared at her. “I am not crazy.”
Her smile fell away, replaced by a look of sadness. “Honey, yes you are. I know some people don’t like using that word, but of course you are. You have delusions and hallucinations. We’ve been in this very room so many times and you’ve said it looked like a spaceship, the inside of a tree, and those are just the pleasant ones. Your insanity lends itself to very macabre and paranoid flights of fancy.”
It felt hard to breathe now, and it took a couple of tries before I got my next question out. “So this place isn’t a city of crazy people?”
She patted my knee. “It is, but not in a bad way. This is a very exclusive, very expensive institution for those that have families that can afford to have their loved ones treated and kept in an environment that is minimally restrictive while giving them the treatment they need. They can live full lives without feeling isolated or stigmatized, and in some cases they can even be reintegrated into society down the line if they make enough progress.” She clucked her tongue again. “Progress that you seemed to be making before Peter got his hooks into you again. Shame on him.” The woman waggled her fingers in the air. “I mean it, I know he’s dead, but shame on him.”
My head was swimming, but I tried to focus on one thing she’d said. “I…I can get out?”
Pursing her lips, she gave a small nod. “Maybe. Some day. I hope so. But I won’t lie to you. This latest episode has set you back considerably. We need to do a reset again, which I really hate because we just did one.”
“A reset?”
Standing up, she pushed the chair back as she nodded again. “Yes, I don’t like doing them in quick succession, but I feel like getting this all out of the way now is better than letting it fester. Give you a clean start on the right track. How does that sound?”
I was sobbing now, terrified and grateful and ashamed. I sucked in a deep breath, the mint burning my lungs as it went down. “Yes, yes. Anything you say.”
Her smile was back now. “Very good.” Clapping her hands, she stepped further to the side as the two men who had brought me there carried in a thick plastic tarp and unrolled it on the floor before my chair. Once it was attached to hooks and firmly in place, she told them to “Bring him in.” They left quickly, heading behind me, and several minutes passed in silence as we waited. I wanted to ask a million questions, but I was so confused now and I worried that if I made problems I would only make things worse for myself. So I stayed quiet until some door opened behind us and I gave a startled coyote yelp.
I could smell it before I saw it. A ponderous pale mound of flesh three times the size of a normal man, rolls of fat dry and white and flaking on top and oozing clear and crimson lines from whatever raw rot lay underneath those folds. It had a head, but I only glimpsed its shape briefly as it was wheeled around and positioned so its stirruped legs were over the clear plastic tarp. Fighting back the urge to vomit, I looked over at the woman questioningly and whispered.
“What is it?”
She hit a button on the wall and all my straps unlocked and pulled away. I would have stood up then, but her angry gaze had me pinned to the spot.
“He is our god. And you will kneel to him. Now.”
Shaking uncontrollably, I pitched myself forward onto the tarp. How could any of this be real? It had to be more delusions. Was I really this far g…
Dark matter began to curl out of the shadowy, fetid place between his legs, plopping wetly to the tarp with an explosion of new corrupted scents that made my eyes burn. A second piece, and then a third, a fourth, and then no more. All the time, I was frozen on my knees, too afraid and disgusted to move or speak.
I heard the woman step closer now as she put a cold hand on my neck. “This is the reset process. One of the many gifts he gives us. This will put you back on the right path. Get rid of these delusions once and for all.”
“I…oh God…ah…what do I have to do?”
She snorted lightly. “Isn’t it obvious?” When I didn’t respond, she pushed my head forward gently. “Eat it. All of it. Eat it all right up.”
“Can I get some water please? My mouth tastes bad.”
The lady smiled at me. “You can when you get finished writing it all down. Everything you remember.”
I held up the laptop like a child who had finished an unsavory meal. “I did already.”
Her smile fell away. “Don’t be pert. You didn’t write this part did you? Keep going.”
“Oh. Sorry. Okay.” I paused, and then, “Why are you having me write all this? You told me it didn’t really happen.”
“No, I said that it didn’t matter that it happened. That no one will believe it. Especially if we tell it to them like its real. People are mistrustful of the truth when they want a lie.”
I nodded as though I understood, though I didn’t at all. “So what will you do with what I’m writing?”
She shrugged. “Leak it onto the internet maybe. I might post it on a forum. Nosleep maybe.”
“What’s that?”
She licked her thumb and rubbed something thick and gummy off my cheek before popping it back in her mouth. Sucking on it, she closed her eyes with a contented sigh. “I think that’s enough, Clint.”
“You said my name was Tony.”
“Did I? Well I told you there was a world outside of here too, didn’t I?”
I felt fear welling up in me again. “You did.”
She giggled, her eyes hard as little chips of glass. “I can’t believe you believed me.”

United Territories of Columbia
I. Theme
Mystic America at dawn of technology. Untouchable darkness at fringe of civilization. Post-apocalyptic America with soft magic. Age of discovery. Music, games, fighting, entertainment, and sex are abundant despite the precariousness of life and death.
A. Magic
There is no formal magic system. Magic is rare but not unheard of. Some believe in it, some don’t. Mysticism has returned to America in the form of superstition, tall tales, “lucky” or “cursed” artifacts, and strange sightings. The Wilds are said to be home to great and dangerous magic. There are no formal spells. Magic tends to take the form of supernatural persuasion, illusions, and transformation, not offensive spells like fire and lightning. Witches exist but are extremely rare, dangerous, and ostracized by settlements who fear them. Certain items are imbued with magic or super natural characteristics. Some are highly sought after while others are cursed. Some people can talk to plants, animals, predict the weather, or gently control it. Some can manipulate luck or are strongly affected by its influence.
B. The Wilds
Interchangeably used with The Purchase, any uncharted territory outside settlements and reservations. Impossible to chart and nearly impossible to navigate. Complete distortion of distance and time (caused by atomic ripples through reality from the nuclear holocaust). Maps and compasses are useless. Everyone knows a story about someone who got lost in the wilds and never returned or returned changed, their body or personality drastically altered. Home to cryptids, ghosts, witches, animals, ghouls, sub-human creatures, mystical creatures, and lost tribes as well as The Darkness.
C. The Darkness
Difficult to describe. Some claim it is a mood that falls on someone or a settlement and brings depression and longing. Some describe it as a dark seed that burrows into someone and causes them to act cruel or violent. Most agree it exists in some kind of indescribable physical form out in the wilds. Some believe it takes the form of a man or woman dressed all in black. Some learned people believe the degradation of civilization gave birth to a cosmic creature/sub-atomic phenomenon once wiped out by the light of civilization but now allowed to fester and grow once more. Anyone who has laid eyes on it has met a quick end, often by their own hand.
D. The Apocalypse
No one knows for certain how long ago it was, but in the past, America was completely devastated by nuclear fallout. All major cities east of the The Divide were annihilated, and the rest of the land was contaminated by nuclear radiation. With no central government, the power grid was thrown into disrepair (outside The Republic). Civilization steadily degraded into a dark age where many died. A generation ago or maybe two, settlements started to form once more and America is being restored west of The Divide. Remnants of an advanced country scattered across the land. Sometimes called The Darkness or The Great Fire.
II. Geography
The land is collectively known as the United Territories of Columbia (UTC). Geography is ephemeral. Distances seem to change. Maps are completely useless. East is a walled off, no-go zone devastated by nuclear bombs and fallout. West is a new frontier. Shifting boundaries, large reservations. Magical forests, swamps, hinterlands, mountain ranges infused with ancient, precolonial mysticism. Sweeping plains. Small towns separated by miles of wilderness. California is surrounded by walls. Midwest is The Purchase. Texas and Oklahoma are The Republic. California is Golden State. Nevada is Silver State. Oregon, Washington, and Idaho are The Territories. Cities are in ruins, surrounded by impenetrable Wilds leaving small townships, small villages, isolated frontiers people, and large reservations. Navajo control all land between golden/silver state and The Republic. Highways and paved roads have been overgrown for decades.
A. The Divide
United States divided into east and west along the Mississippi River known as The Divide. East is a walled off, no-go zone devastated by nuclear bombs. A 100-foot reinforced, concrete wall separates the west from the east. There is virtually zero migration between east and west UTC. Small towns and settlements dot the boundary between east and west. Towns along the Divide are close enough together that travel is generally safe. Towns have no central government. North is controlled by the White Earth Reservation. All highways are overgrown and in disrepair, leaving dirt roads and footpaths as the only infrastructure.
B. The Purchase
Encompasses the original Louisiana Purchase except for the reservations which are considered their own sovereign territories. Over 500,000,000 acres of mostly untamed wilderness. Dotted with the ruins of a once prosperous society. Bordered by The Divide on East, The Republic on the south, Silver State on the west, The Wall to the north, and The Territories to the northwest. A string of towns and settlements has formed along The Divide. Boundaries, roads, territories, and geographies seem to change and morph within The Purchase.
C. The Republic
Composed of what was once Texas and Oklahoma, A heavily militarized frontier territory with medium-sized towns along border with Navajo nation. A territory completely controlled by guns and gun ownership with a loose, centralized military government. Basically Fallout New Vegas.
D. The Territories
Composed of what was once Oregon, Washington, and Idaho. Thick, overgrown wilderness with the Yakama, Colville, and Nex Perce reservations as the only points of civilizations. Tales of explorers entering The Territories and never returning.
E. The Reservations
Little is known about the reservations. They are secluded and hostile to foreigners. The Navajo Nation is the largest and most powerful, trading with The Republic, Silver State, and Golden State, but no flow of migrants between the two nations. Yakama, Colville, and Nez Perce reservations in the northwest, Navajo Nation in the west, White Earth in the northeast, Choctaw, Cherokee, Chickasaw in the southeast.
F. The Lost Lands
All land east of The Divide devastated by nuclear fallout and radiation. A massive reinforced wall makes travel into the lost lands virtually impossible, and tales of monsters and poisonous air make it undesirable to even try and enter. Little is truly known about these abandoned lands.
G. The Wall
A militarized border several miles deep into dangerous, untamed wilderness separating the UTC from whatever lies north of The Wall. No one has personally seen beyond the wall, just third and fourth-hand stories of what might exist. Stories of a vast, frozen wasteland, others proclaim a golden utopia where settlers are unfit to dwell.
III. Populations
A. Humanoids
- Settlers
Settlers are by far the most common humanoids. A blanket term for people who live in The Purchase. They come in a wide array of colors and sizes including dwarves and giants which are more rare but not unheard of. Human ancestry and general history is lost to the ages. All data was stored electronically and therefore lost. The ability to read has been lost outside reservations. Race is not a large concern outside reservations, and neither is gender as most people are focused on survival and enjoying the short time they have left. Children and old people are said to be good omens as they imply an area is sustainable for living.
- Shifters
Human by all appearance, shapeshifters can shift into a variety of different animals. For example, deerkin, wolfkin, rabbitkin, foxkin, snakekin. No one knows the origin of shapeshifters, and they are exceedingly uncommon. Said to live in The Wilds in tribes and enclaves.
- Gangers
Little is known about the true nature of doppelgangers. What is known is they take the place of someone lost, dead, or murdered and attempt to live their life. Indistinguishable from normal humans except their toes are fused together. Feared by many, generally believed to be murderous and said to have appeared from The Wilds or The Darkness.
- Natives
Any member of the reservations that control much of the country. Widely understood to be the first people to settle the land and deeply respected. They existed before the apocalypse and even before the civilizations of the apocalypse with a long and storied history dating back over a thousand years. Come from a large variety of different tribes each with their own language and customs. Will trade with settlers and travel The Purchase but are generally prohibited to marry or mate outside their tribe.
- Unfinished
A variety of reasons such as a shallow grave, a deep-seated grudge, or unrequited love can cause the deceased to rise once more and wander forever until their purpose is completed. Very uncommon but not unheard of. Unfinished are distinguished by their lack of odor and inability to sweat or cry. Unfinished with hate in their heart can become a force of nature, unkillable and evil.
- Trans
A person with two or more souls inside them who can physically transform back and forth between the different people contained within them. More a rumor than a known group of people. No one knows where they come from or how they transform.
- Succubi
A person who cannot digest food and must have constant sex and alcohol in order to survive. Impossibly beautiful. Not malicious, but feared by men as soul devourers and by women for leading men astray. Must hide their true nature. Cannot give birth or impregnate women.
- Incubi
A person who must rest all day and hunt at night in search of dreams to devour. Some settlements value them as eaters of nightmares while others claim they steal children to continually feast on. Cannot digest food. Cannot dream.
- Kin
Also known as elementals, a wide variety of humanoids with an affinity for the elements such as waterkin, firekin, lightkin, shadowkin, earthkin, and windkin. Not humans as the way we understand them. Can be born as adults or as children. Can live for years or only days. Some settlements believe they are manifestations of nature, of The Wilds trying to achieve consciousness. Waterkin cannot leave the water. Firekin are born of great fires. Lightkin are said to live on the peaks of the highest mountains along with windkin. Shadowkin wander aimlessly on the longest winter nights, and earthkin are said to appear from freshly tilled fields.
- Cuckoos
A group of children or adults who share one singular mind but each display their own personality. Not well understood. Some settlements believe children born under a certain moon become cuckoos. Often experience mental illness as they try to deal with their shared mind.
- Empaths
Often disturbed humanoids who generate negative emotions in people so they can feed on them or get high on them. Other empaths spread joy in order to feed or become inebriated.
- Harbingers
A rare type of humanoid that can cause death or illness with a single touch or kiss. Said to be a bad omen. If someone was gravely ill, one might say, “the Harbinger is coming.” Believed to be born of the Darkness, some believe they are a necessary force of nature.
- Shadows
A rare humanoid who can turn invisible, sometimes at will, and sometimes not. Because of this rare ability, shadows tend to exploit their power for nefarious means and are feared and ostracized by settlements, often assumed guilty without evidence.
- Star Child
A rare humanoid who can leave their body behind and travel the world in astral form. Most can only do this while sleeping, while older star children have trained themselves to travel at will. All star children are desperately afraid of incubi.
B. Fauna
The fauna in The Purchase is largely unchanged from before the apocalypse. Near The Divide, one may discover a creature fused or deformed from radiation. In The Purchase, tales of problematic animals, whether massive, aggressive, or supernaturally intelligent are common. There is a subtle connection between fauna and the magic of The Wilds.
Most people believe in cryptids, and many have seen them. Shifters, devils, demon fauna, glowing eyes, apes, fiery horses, flying humans with wings, talking animals, glowing animals, ghosts, hounds with multiple heads, wendigos, and countless other stories. In this world, squirrels are as common as a hellhound or wendigo as settlers have never experienced a world where these supernatural species never existed.
C. Flora
Flora have taken on a mythos all their own. Their medicinal properties are highly valued with the lack of modern healthcare and anyone with the knowledge to find them or use them is generally well respected. Plants grow much more aggressively and are highly resistant to poison and culling with tales of The Wilds enveloping small settlements. There are also stories of foliage displaying intelligence like an animal. Flowers and herbs are highly prized as gifts because of the difficulty to acquire them. Some settlements worship the trees and treat them like ancestors. These settlements believe they can communicate with the trees and gain their knowledge.
The Wilds and the flora within are inextricable in terms of myth and danger. Some say trees and plants shift and migrate when unseen by human eyes to confuse wanderers and lead them astray. Others believe The flora of the Wilds protect humans from a great and evil darkness at its heart. They must deter humans at all costs to prevent the Darkness from escaping.
IV. Technology
The technology in The Purchase is a strange mix of frontier tools and ancient tech. Outside the Republic there are no power grids and any settlement with a water pump and generator is seen as a desirable place to live. Generators have been converted to run on plant oils or rendered fat from animals and humans. Ancient technology is as highly coveted as it is abhorred. A working radio picking up signals from a distant land would be cause for a party by some, while another settlement would believe they are the sounds of the afterlife.
It is common for someone to keep a knife on them at all times for work and protection as well as a small scarf for cleaning, cinching, or sleeping. Guns are exceedingly rare outside The Republic and are taken by force by Republic traders should they be discovered.
Common items are yard tools, kitchen tools, knives, rope, scarves, repair tools, anything that doesn’t require electricity or constant maintenance. Certain rare items have subtle magical properties like a knife that never dulls, a slingshot that never misses, boots that never wear out and imbue the wearer with endless vitality, and a frying pan that always makes delicious food.
Musical instruments are highly coveted, and a skilled musician would enjoy celebrity status by their settlement for their ability to provide entertainment.
Medieval weapons such as swords, maces, and shields do not exist, but a recurve bow, dagger, slingshot, or club would not be out of place.
V. Civilization
A. Settlements
Civilization had been in steady decline for generations since the apocalypse and is only recently starting to rebuild. Small settlements dot the landscape, sometimes connected by dirt roads, sometimes completely isolated and in danger of decline. Each settlement will have similar yet different values. Reservations tend to be more advanced with roads and a centralized government along with trade, resources, and infrastructure. The Republic and States are more advanced than the Purchase.
Not much is known about pre-apocalypse Columbia and no one is alive who saw it. Most people are only focused on thrills and survival. Drinking, fighting, sex, and games are extremely popular when there is no work to do. People are very loyal to friends and family while very suspicious of strangers. Most settlements have no government and limited utilities and infrastructure. They are simply occupied by a group of people just trying to survive.
- Infrastructure
Most settlements are quite small ranging in population from a dozen to a few dozen settlers. Large settlements on the Purchase are unheard of. Most settlements will have a hub where people gather to socialize, usually serving refreshments or even just clean water and light. It is not unusual for people to spend hours at the hubs talking and playing and flirting and drinking, music is treasured, as are traveling storytellers.
Some settlements have fight clubs which are tight knit clubs where one is taught clandestine fighting techniques ranging from striking, grappling, to submissions. Sometimes these members will travel alone or in groups to other settlements in search of challengers, or offering a prize to anyone who can beat their champion.
Food supply is a touchy subject. Traders will infrequently come by to restore food supplies. Almost all food is canned. Hunting is extremely difficult in the Wilds, and farming presents its own challenges of the Wilds overtaking fertile lands. Besides the threat of the seemingly expanding Wilds, settlements will vanish or dissipate because of a lack of food or water.
B. Reservations
Each reservation is unique depending on its customs and how well the tribe adapted to the apocalypse. Most tribes are better organized and governed than the loose network of settlements dotting the purchase. An individual reservation will have a unifying culture as well as basic roads and access to water. Most have an agricultural program, making their traveling merchants highly welcomes outside the reservation.
No reservation yet is outwardly hostile, but travelers not born in the reservation are forbidden inside and must do business at the market stands set up for settlers. Natives tend to look down on settlers as unclean, uneducated, and incapable of governance, though traveling merchants are much more friendly towards settlers having lived and traveled among them.
Despite the vast differences often separating them, reservations remain on friendly terms with one another, commiserating with how similar their customs, rites, and ancient history are compared to the settlers, states, and Republic. The leaders of reservations are all aware of the great injustices inflicted upon them in ancient history and do not wish to see it repeated. This at the least prevents all the reservations from being hostile towards one another, and is somewhat of a shared history.
C. The Republic
Guns are the defining aspect of The Republic. An ammo-centric centralized government where the only rule is the people with the guns make the rules. Far advanced beyond the reservations or purchase because of their intact power grid. The Republic will deny the reality of its steady decline in order to appear intimidating. With working vehicles and electronics, they still struggle immensely to distribute resources or collect taxes as each citizen’s prerogative is to do whatever their gun allows them to do. A civilization based on absolute rugged individualism that struggles to form a coherent society because of everyone’s own self interest. The only law is whatever your gun will allow you to do.
The central government has a powerful, well armed military, their only resource in exerting any kind of control over its citizens. Every republic citizen believes they live in the best, most powerful territory. While The Republic is easily the most powerful and well armed, their government and institutions are weak and corrupt.
Technology is not advanced as our modern times. There is no internet, telephone lines, or cell towers. Radios exist and are quite valuable for long range communication. Common household appliances and power tools also exist.
D. Silver State
An entire society based on the harsh conditions of desert life. The name of the game is water infrastructure and how well it is managed. The civilization taps deep aquifers as well as mountain peaks, combined with an intact pre-apocalypse sewer and plumbing system to sustain life. If something is good, a person might say “it bears water” or “looks wet”. Wishing someone hope “there will be water”.
Every citizen travels with an indestructible, pre-apocalypse water bottle which can process gallons of urination before it needs to be refreshed at a pump, allowing for limited travel and expeditions.
Because of the harsh environment, no other territories attempt to enter Silver State, even the Republic in desperate search of guns and technology has lost many to fruitless expeditions. This goes both ways though as Silver State is bordered off to the west by a massive wall, to the north by the dangerous Territories, to the east by the Wilds, and to the south by uncharted desert wastelands.
E. Golden State
Their is legend of a vast, futuristic city that stretched to every horizon before it was annihilated by fire. The entire west coast of the state broke off in the calamity and either sank or floated out to sea depending on who you ask.
The annihilating fires vastly altered the landscape and revealed vast gold deposits deep within the earth, allowing the state to build immeasurable wealth before the Great Fire.
F. The Wilds
The Wilds are an impossibly vast stretch of wilderness comprised of dense forests, murky swamps, raging rivers, mountains that kiss the sky, dizzying hinterlands, and endless plains of gold. Any attempt to navigate the wilds has seen the loss of explorers or for explorers to return years later believing only a few days have passed or vice versa.
Shifters and kin are said to be born in the wilds and will occasionally leave their homes to experience settler life or lure settlers into the Wilds.
The Wilds teem with wildlife, both natural and supernatural. Innumerable stories of intelligent animals, possessed or rare creatures. Even with all the myths and stories, no one comes close to knowing and understanding all that the wilds consist of.
There are rumors of night markets in the wilds run by talking animals that sell baubles, strange plants and mushrooms, as well as delicious prepared food. A human should never consume the food, or they will turn into an animal and belong to the wilds forever.
It is said the source of The Darkness grows in the deepest darkest parts of the Wild at its unknowable core.
VI. Culture
A. Settlements
Each settlement has its own culture that is similar to surrounding settlements, though settlements cut off from the world can have vastly different cultures and quirks. Race only matters to the extent that someone is a native or not a native, and that only matters on a reservation. Gender is not a major issue either. Men and women are treated with equal respect and there is no collective animosity between the genders or harmful stereotypes.
Instead of labeling someone simply as male or female, a common nomenclature is masc and fem. A man or woman can be masc or fem and such designation is based on their nature and personality. Someone who is masc tends to be aggressive, proud, physically strong, controlling, a leader, a doer, takes the initiative, is boisterous, but not necessarily every characteristic previously listed.
Someone who is fem tends to be quiet, agreeable, passive, nurturing, physically weak, timid, sensual, thoughtful, creative. Masc and fem combine ancient gender roles with the yin and yang paradigm. A masc and a fem are generally believed to make a good couple regardless of sex.
People on the settlements tend to be in their 20s and 30s and average lifespan is quite short. An elderly person is a rare sight and always taken care of by their community. Many people have lost family members or their entire families to the dangers and lack of resources in the world, and relationships form fast and hold tight on The Purchase. A child would be collectively raised and watched over by the settlement. It is not uncommon to give close friends the title of brother sister, aunt uncle, or mom and dad.
Sex is quite common, though pregnancy is rare. Life is short in this world, and most people focus on sensual joys like eating, drinking, gaming, fighting, smoking, and fucking. Casual sex is common, though long-term relationships also form.
Good food is rare and always cause for celebration. Most settlements are eager for an excuse to have a party. There is a sense that the settlers must ignore their harsh reality with regular celebrations or The Darkness will take hold.
Gaming is a large part of settlement living with little meaningful work to be found. A deck of cards is worth someone’s life, and most decks of cards have strange additions not found in normal playing cards. A good card player is always well respected. Bad card players will always find friends. Pebbles is a simple game where rows of pebbles are lined up. Two players take turns removing as many pebbles they want from any one row. The goal is to force your opponent to take the last pebble. Other physical games like horse shoes, corn hole, targets with a slingshot, bolos, mini shuffle board, hoops, darts, bocce, and buckets exist and are popular in different geographies.
Fighting is a popular activity that also causes many problems. Each settlement has its own rules on what is acceptable in a fight. Some settlements only approve grappling while others only approve striking. Sometimes striking or grappling below the groin is prohibited. Using a weapon in a recreational fight is considered extremely scummy behavior.
Smoking and drinking are common activities. Drinking is the most common as settlements distill or ferment their own alcohol. Smoking is a more special occasion treat, especially if a native trader comes by to sell weed and tabac. Experimenting with the plants and mushrooms of the Wilds is seen as reckless behavior.
Crime varies from settlement to settlement. Some are highly punitive while others focus on the shame of being a criminal. A criminal is commonly exiled which also leads settlements to be highly distrusting of strangers. Even small crimes like stealing are abhorred by settlements. Sex crimes are punishable by death. Cheating or consequential lying can result in a public beating by the settlement.
Outside the more carnal forms of entertainment, music and storytelling ability is highly valued. Everyone loves a good musician or storyteller to alleviate the dread and boredom of settlement living. Storytellers are relied on for fresh material, and the best storytellers are famous travelers. Their stories are a mix of myth, legend, strange sightings, and their own imagination.
Not much is known about the world they live in. A settler’s knowledge of the world rarely extends outside their small settlement. Communication from beyond local settlements is rare. Most know about reservations, the republic, golden state, silver state, the wilds, the darkness, and a small collection of local myths and legends. They know there is a much larger world out there but barely have any knowledge of it. The Wilds are seen as this infinite untamed land that stretches to infinity and contains the most unimaginable creatures and magics.
The Darkness is this ever present weight in their life, always to blame for depression, ill luck, or disaster.
Every settler will at some point describe this strange impulse they’ve had or still have to travel the lands as a wanderer. Sometimes out of boredom or ill luck, a settler will be overcome by the wanderlust and travel The Purchase forever until they find what they are looking for. Some believe a wanderer will never age or die until they find their purpose.
B. Reservations
Each reservation has it’s own set of customs and languages passed down for hundreds of years and still practiced currently
C. The Republic
The one with the guns makes the rules.
Women in and outside The Republic are generally considered weak and oppressable unless of course they have a gun. There has been a push to deny women gun ownership met with fierce opposition.
D. Silver State
Water is life.
E. Golden State
Unknown
VII. The Supernatural
A. Magical Items
Magical items are uncommon but not unheard of. Magic is quite soft and quite low, verging on believable coincidence or phenomenon that is unnatural but not impossible. Simple things like a knife that never dulls, boots that never wear out, unlucky or lucky bandanna, a pendant making people more attracted to you, a lucky coin that brings fortune, a gun that never misses or always misses, a cursed knife that makes the owner more aggressive, a home of ill fortune, an ocarina that summons animals, a compass that doesn’t point north but can safely guide you through the Wilds. An item won’t be obviously magical until after extended use, and its effects can be written off to luck or coincidence. There are no shields, swords, maces, flails, or other medieval weaponry in this world. A typical weapon would be a knife, metal bar, brick, frying pan, shovel, ax, scythe, chain, baseball bat, spud bar, or a solid hunk of wood.
B. Nature
The world, and more specifically the Purchase, the Territories, and especially the Wilds is permeated with soft, low magic. Water sources can appear where there was none. Navigating the world is extremely difficult as the landscape seems to warp and change without one knowing. You can sleep and wake up in an unknown location, a well worn road can lead to two different places at random. It is not uncommon for someone to enter the Wilds and never return or to return much older after being gone only a few days. Staying in the Wilds too long can turn someone dark, feral, or addled. The wanderlust is this overwhelming sensation every settler has to travel, and it is generally advised to resist the feeling. Some believe it is the Darkness or the Wilds looking for new prey. Some people can hear voices on the wind or from the Wilds. There are certain areas that fill people with dread or anger or sadness as if some great calamity happened there before the Fire and left an emotional imprint on the land. Most would agree the Wilds seems to have a mind or at least a will of it’s own.
C. Cryptids
In addition to rare and strange humanoids, there are many supernatural creatures which wander the land and inhabit the Wilds.

2023.01.16 00:51 DEFCON_moot Solutions to end child abuse forever
We have to get to the bones and sinew of the child abuse matter.
If it's true that "evil" operates through their artificial power sustained by child sexual abuse, turning children into future abusers, then blackmail and mobster behavior ... these people are hurt. Like racists and sexists and sociopaths showing up in community, their damage indicates imbalance and unwellness in community, and they are a manifestation of it. The fact that they've been able to grow incestuous Biden-like families that make the problem fester are the biggest indicator the empire needs to fall.
But until the collapsing empire is totally flattened, the problem must be stopped.
The medicine is community! That's the hardest step. But it's the only thing that will be a cure, because otherwise we are just using systems of imperial violence to shift the victimhood.
Once we have a justice system that actually works we can send them to therapy.
If the child trafficking is because of pedophilia and mental disorder, round them up, give them not exactly a "padded cell" but some kind of contained environment, and give them some robotic child shaped sex doll, film all their behavior with it and then show it to them, show them what madness they have. Talk to them about it. Teach them empathy but take away their ability to hurt themselves and others. Maybe most of them like Bill Gates or Trumps or Obamas or Clintons will never leave their cells, but it's humane to try to find therapy. Not "treatment" and covering it up with Big Pharma. Truly effective therapy. Energy and spiritual work.
If the children or animals they raped are just their ways of expressing duper's delight, power over innocence and/or personal pain, they need to be exposed to therapy as well. It doesn't matter if it's an actor, celebrity, politician or royal — if their only way of feeling privilege, power and control, and of feeding their narcissism is through predatory behavior (or the sick parents that feed their own children to it) we must understand it's a moving goalpost and they will always seek the wrong thing that is enticing to them because they see it as forbidden instead of unhealthy. Like a drug.
If it's because they are possessed by demons or evil aliens, then you can probably find some cure for that too. Exorcism or higher vibration that kicks out the evil vapor.
I don't want to talk to Christians that think it's just "sin people are born with" and there's no solution. That's defeatist and overly accepting of the situation. And anyway, they still tolerate their sick priests ruling the Church. I don't want to talk to Jews that say "the tears of abused little girls don't matter because they are little". I don't want to talk to lawyers that will excuse their behavior as normal or legally defensible.
I want to have real solutions. Now. That have positive lasting repercussions.
If all else fails, it's going to turn into a vigilante situation. With abusers missing genitals, hands and/or heads. And that may be all we are ready for as a species wide solution. And maybe that would work. But I fear that will perpetuate evil again because violence has a way of burying deep in our soul memories and popping up with consequences in subsequent generations. We need to raise the vibe. We've got to try to stop these cycles of violence that beget cycles of abuse popping up in generations that sustained the violence, that beget all the psychos we have today. And I think therapy is the way.

2023.01.05 04:52 UncleBenThereDunThat How the West Won
In response to the common question: How can we improve Tunisia?
I have a solid answer that you can extract multiple, other, answers from. My apologies for its lack of brevity, but it's not a simple question.
There's a really interesting book entitled "Tragedy & Hope: A History of the World in Our Time" by Carroll Quigley. He was a former university professor of US President Bill Clinton.
In the first chapters, Quigley mentions a concept called "differential diffusion (spread) rates".
Basically stating that dominant cultures, expand their influence from a central city/regional location, outwards. Rome to El Jem, or El Kef, for example.
As these cultures expand, the center city begins to die. And higher living standards are now found on the outskirts of the center of the city. Inner city vs suburbs, for example. Or Sidi Bou Said/Carthage vs Tunis.
But NOT all elements of this dominant culture are diffused or absorbed, outwardly, by non Westerners. Nor is it diffused in the same order, in every country.
For example: French culture, we can say, started in Paris. And spread outwardly from Paris, through colonialism, trade, etc.
The cultural elements, some tangible and some intangible, spread outward to Tunisia. Or Algeria. Vietnam or Cambodia.
Croissants are in all 4 countries now. The French language, parliamentary systems, gourmet cuisine, Renault, military tactics, democracy, respect for the individual, Christianity, capitalism, etc., are in all four countries now. In varying amounts. Thanks to this cultural expansion.
What makes so many different, non Western, modern cultures, with so many different living standards and economies, is the rate and ORDER in which these new Western influences and technologies entered the new culture. And how they were accepted.
In Western culture, the order of their cultural characteristics arrived in this ORGANIC order:
- Western ideology
- Revolution in weapons. (especially firearms)
- Agricultural revolution
- Industrial Revolution
- Revolution in safety, sanitation, and medicine.
- Population/demographic explosion
- Revolution in transportation and communications.
⬆️ In summary of the above list, Western culture absorbed Western ideology first -- democratic governments, individual rights, philosophy, etc.
By the increase in thought and imagination, advanced militaries were created to produce weapons for war and peace. To protect the ideology. So now, the military brings, and holds times of peace. New lands, new citizens, new gold and silver.
This military advance (needing less, to do more) frees up soldiers to put onto the farms. New innovations in agriculture now happen , as did with the military. What once took 20 people on a farm, to feed 21 people, now only takes 5, to feed 21 people. This frees up labor for the next point.
Now that thought, food, and defense are secured, efficient and bountiful, this newly freed labor moves to an Industrial Revolution to create more efficiency in the first 3 points.
Machines are dangerous. And lots of people in cities and factories become dirty and disease ridden. With new innovations in industry, more labor is, again, set free to focus on health and safety.
Now that health and safety are secured, the population explodes. Demanding faster and more efficient means of communication and transportation. Labor, again, frees for the Information Revolution, and on it goes.
Western culture and militaries from about the 1550s onward, started wresting power from Islam, Asia, and Africa. These once mighty cultures, have found themselves, now, playing catch up to the West. Obsolete.
It is here that the global diffusion (spread) of Western culture begins. Not as a whole unit, but in pieces, that each country saw useful for their own regional gains of the time.
This is the INORGANIC order (more or less) that Western culture was diffused into Africa and Asia.
- Revolution in weapons
- Revolution in transport and communications
- Revolution in sanitation and medicine
- Industrial Revolution
- Demographic explosion
- Agricultural revolution
- Western ideology (if at all)
Here is where it gets interesting. These non Western empires were already powerful and rich from centuries before. But their armies are inadequate now.
With that old money, the first thing they invest in is weapons. Military. Paying the West for these items, to protect themselves from the West.
Now, guess which population was used to create an army? Yep. Farmers. Agriculture. So now, you have a modern army, but at the sacrifice of food. From here, military dictatorships appear quite often.
After 30 years, the weapons are not enough, now. The transportation and communication modes of their old culture, are now too slow to attack a Western one.
So now, a revolution of transportation and communication is created here. And where does the labor for this come from? From the military.
So now, they are lacking proper food, and a proper army, just to catch up. We can see how the IMF and World Bank would step into this picture at this point.
Hard and difficult labor on the farm, from a lack of manpower. Hungry, dead, and wounded soldiers. This lessens population numbers, and brings way for a revolution in sanitation, safety, and medicine. Hardships and lack of labor included.
But check this out! Modern transportation (and disposable trash products), all arrive before the revolution in health and safety.
So the cultural idea of this new transportation and products, and how to use them "safely" and "cleanly", are set. Long BEFORE the health and safety factors were put into place. Ever seen drivers and pollution in Cairo?? Mumbai? What about the litter problem?
Next is the Industrial revolution in Africa and Asia. But wait a minute....Where the hell are they going to find labor to do this? The farms, health sector, and military are spent. More loans and low wage immigration become the answer.
A simple sense of non Western, state stability is now accomplished. It's not superior to the West (yet), but it's not exactly obsolete any more either.
A semi-stable state, creates a population explosion. And NOW, they can finally focus on an Agricultural Revolution. But with what money? More loans and more immigration.
And after that, then they MIGHT adopt Western philosophy. What was first to be absorbed in the creation of the West, becomes last to be absorbed by the non West. As it should be.
Because complete adoption of a Western ideology, means complete, non Western, cultural death. But it's a vital piece to the Western power paradigm. Unless a new power is created...
The countries that used some of the most oppressive and genocidal forces against their agricultural population, are the countries who refused to take IMF loans. They did the work themselves. And now they are superpowers.
Both China and Russia used their Five Year Plans of genocide, simply to refuse a bank loan.
South Korea pulled a similar, less deadly, move in the 1990s. Their IMF debt was defaulting, and instead of selling off assets like ports or natural resources, they created a Gold Campaign.
Families from all over the country donated basically all the gold they had. Jewelry, coins, bracelet. Whatever. They donated it and the government melted it down and paid off the debt. Now look at South Korea in 2023. Not perfect. But doing pretty good.
The first thing to understand is that non Western cultures, aside from trinkets and cheap entertainment, adopted Western ideology as a defense mechanism, against the West. They were forced to adopt it.
There are many surface resemblances in these places, to Western culture. Dubai. Istanbul. Tunis. But their understanding and use of Western culture, was not organically created like Western culture.
Therefore it is not Western culture, but an imitation of it, for the country's own defense.
Ancient Islamic Empires became powerful based on the same order, as the first organic 7 points. Ideology, military, and food were secured first! And Europe lagged behind.
Now, the tables have simply turned, using the same formula. It's a lot to extrapolate and build upon here, but this is the gist of why many non Western cultures are behind. Eastern Europe included. As Western European culture diffused to them, in pieces, as well. They just don't know how to put the puzzle together. And the train has already left. The order of introduction cannot be reversed. In time, or in people's hearts.
In short, a person got their hands on an iPhone, and hasn't discovered yet, that it is an Android. Similar benefits, but a totally different understanding of the technology. Putting the carriage before the horse.
Another book to check out is "Confessions of an Economic Hitman" by John Perkins. He's on YouTube, too.
Hope this helps.

2022.12.26 15:33 sudestest I'm sick and tired of people believing in conspiracy theories.
I was having dinner with my family on Christmas eve and -- out of nowhere -- my nephew claimed that former President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in some sort of government plot. This mendacious lad then went on to claim that Martin Luther King Jr. was also assassinated by the US government.
I understand that conspiracy theories are fun and make for good entertainment like the X-files but I'm worried that they are making their way into the mainstream. What effect will this have on the delicate fabric of our society?
It is unacceptable that young people increasingly believe this sort of poppycock. Instead of getting their news from authoritative sources such as CNN or Wikipedia they are swallowing the propaganda of Russian bots and outright lunatics such as Peter Dale Scott and Ray McGovern.
Quite honestly -- although I strongly believe in free speech -- I think there needs to be some sort of harsh curtailment of free speech so that young people are not led astray.
At dinner my nephew went on to ever more ludicrous heights, claiming that our beloved war leader Zelensky is a "grifter" who has "five yachts" and is an "utter scumbag" with "zero principles" and "has all the character of a pedophile." While I don't support censorship, I think we can all agree that critics of the Zelensky government should be censored in some capacity, because we simply don't have time for this nonsense. There is a WAR going on and democrasy is in the cross-hairs of the Soviet Union.
I pointed out that actual scholars such as Rob Reiner, Sean Penn, Joseph Biden, and Hillary Clinton have explained to us very clearly what is at stake, namely FREEDOM. I even tried to explain to him the idea of the "rules based new world order"; alas it fell on deaf ears :(
Kids these days want to have nothing but advocada toast and smart phones; meanwhile children are starving to death in Peru.
When I was a boy I literally had to walk through several feet of snow for several miles just to get to school (admittedly I grew up in Medicine Hat in northern Canada) but i still took the time to LEARN. I did my due diligence, reading scholarly publications such as Time, Life, Newsweek etc. and watching CNN, Fox etc. Nowadays kids just go on the Facebook, read a post by some Russian bot, and think they have all the answers.
I'm no scrooge, but what my shocking Christmas dinner experience demonstrates is that kids these days are plagued by misinformation. They have no respect for the experts. The cherry on top was that no one except me was wearing a mask. When I tried to hand out masks to my family members they all rolled their eyes and my cousin Ned even threw a pumpkin pie in my face -- to much laughter and vigorous applause. I said, "Fine! If you wanna die from Covid 19 and monkeypox, it's your funeral!" This was followed by more sniggering from the others. These reprobates don't even care about our grandma's health, let alone their own. In an appalling twist, my grandma herself joined in the mockery; as I wiped the pie off my face she barked, "stop being such a pussy, dumbass - those face diapers don't do jack shit."
How will the human race survive with these sort of yahoos running the show?
(i also passed out my self-made Anthony Fauci quiz cards, but later found obscene scribblings written on them; one devious prankster even drew a Hitler mustache on the good doctor's face).
God help us all.
Edit: since so many missed it, this post was satire :) I was bored this morning and felt like writing something silly.

2022.12.22 16:45 incorruptible_bk Ending the mystery of what happened to the body of Pamela Cafritz
TL;DR: It is frozen in a cryogenic facility in Michigan. Longer narrative: Cafritz was cryogenically frozen in line with her wishes stated via membership in the nonprofit
Cryonics Institute (CI) in Clinton Township, Macomb County, Michigan. The process of Cafritz's freezing is described in Case Report #144. Though CI do not list her name, identity points match including age, location, and date of death. See the account below; note that references to "Suspended Animation" / "SA" are to a private company that "stabilizes" bodies (read: packs up and transports it in cold storage), not to the
fictional process.
CI Case 144
CI patient #144 was a 56 year old female from New York. The patient was a CI member at the time of her death.
Emergency arrangements were made with Suspended Animation, however, the patient died in the hospital mid-afternoon on November 7, 2016 while the SA team was en route to the hospital. Suspended Animation arrived and provided cooling, performed chest compressions, and transported the patient to Detroit by private jet.
The patient arrived at the CI facility, packed in ice, at 3:15 am on the 8th of November, approximately 12 hours after death. Nasal temperature was 3c. There was notable edema in the face and lower extremities before the perfusion began. The perfusion was started at 4:00 am. There were no clots noted and there was good flow from both jugular veins.
[NAME REMOVED] performed the perfusion. During the perfusion there were 5 liters of 10% Eg solution used, 8 liters of 30% Eg solution used, and 32 liters of 70% VM1 solutions used. The final refractive index of the effluents exiting the right jugular vein was 1.4165. The final refractive index of the effluents exiting the left jugular vein was 1.4156. The average perfusion pressure was held at 130mm and metal cannulas were used. Flow rate started at 1.36 liters per minute and was reduced to .32 liters per minute by the end of the perfusion. Nasal temperature was 0c. The body perfusion was stopped at 5:00 am, as there was very minimal evidence of perfusate uptake in the extremities. The perfusion to the head was complete at 5:35 am. Considerable dehydration of the head and face was noted along with a bronzing color of the skin.
The patient was then placed in the computer controlled cooling chamber to cool to liquid nitrogen temperature. The human vitrification program was selected and the time needed to cool the patient to liquid nitrogen temperature was five days and 11 hours. The patient was then placed in a cryostat for long-term cryonic storage.
