2023.06.01 01:28 Think_Ear8024 New tool to help look at admissions data

Hey everyone!
One of my friends and I are working on a project, https://admissions.fyi/, that allows high school seniors to post their college admissions stats and what schools they applied to for underclassmen to look at and see what they need to do to get into their dream schools. We currently offer a few cool tools like visualizations and summary statistics, and are working on adding more features. We know that it’s not possible and it’s not our intent to replace subreddits like applyingtocollege as they serve as good forums to have conversations and offeseek advice, but our hope is to make it far easier to share, view, and interpret college admissions results.
Right now, IU only has 8 data points and we were looking to see if any students who applied within the last couple years would be interested in boosting that number up by submitting their data! It should only take a few minutes and would be super helpful not just to us, but to high school students as well. For full transparency, you will need to sign in to our website with your google account, but feel free to use a burner. All posted data points are anonymous and are used solely to help people get a better understanding of college admissions decisions.

2023.05.13 23:30 Awesome_Socks_69 How to apply to a U.S. undergrad college and then medical school from UK?

I’m from the UK and want to live and work in the USA,
What I’m wondering is what is the process/ how do I apply to US colleges for med undergrad like is it thru common app which I’ve heard a lot about?
And also, I’ve heard from applyingtocollege that even if I graduate from a U.S. college for undergrad, I still wont be able to get into a medical school as I’m a UK citizen and they simply won’t accept me, is this true and so would I need some sort of visa or something?
And would I be able to get a student loan or would I be entirely depend on financial aid, if so how would I get financial aid?
Sorry if I sound clueless I’m just new to this and very confused.
Thanks

2023.05.13 19:40 Awesome_Socks_69 Is it possible to get into a U.S. college for undergrad then go to a U.S. med school as someone from the UK?

I’m in my second to last year of high school and want to live and practice in the US
So I was wondering is it possible / how would I go about getting into a U.S. college for undergrad, then getting into a U.S. med school
I’ve been told by some people on applyingtocollege that getting into a U.S. med school as a UK citizen despite doing all 4 years of undergrad in the US is impossible
Thanks

Update from this post: (1) UIUC ECE admit rates by residency, gender, and year (2019-2022) : ApplyingToCollege (reddit.com)
Today, FOIA office emailed me saying that they had incorrect data in the table and they sent me a corrected one.
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1e7BmiEJ2NHRMuLfCgH97EMYyfpfYCEyH/view?usp=sharing
The acceptance rate is generally lower than what it said in the previous file with 20-ish percent for oos and intl and 30% for in-state for CE.

2023.04.27 05:21 InevitableCommand801 Prospective Freshman: Help me decide between JHU and UCLA for mechanical engineering! (Copy and pasted from r/applyingtocollege)

Intended major: Mechanical Engineering
Additional Context: Hoping to go into industry, but interested in going to graduate school and getting a phd
Johns Hopkins University Pros:
Cons:
UCLA Pros:
Cons:
Other notes:
In terms of academics, I think that JHU is probably a bit better, but that UCLA doesn't fall too far behind, although I'm super unsure about this. It feels like I'm making a decision between having a really strong academic experience versus a strong academic experience with a social life. Here are a few specific questions that I think would give me a lot of clarity:
Thank you guys so much!!

2023.04.17 07:06 cutestnpc Tuition 📈 serotonin 📉

I won't go into too much detail but basically I feel very guilty that my dad will have to pay so much for me to go to college. I'm an international student so tuiton is mad high because I can't get federal aid and scholarships are super limited. We discussed finances today and I just started crying in front of him because I just feel so guilty that he'll go through such a hard time because of me. I don't think I'll be able to even sleep or think about anything else and I just want to know how to get rid of this feeling. And also I'm sorry bc I know this subreddit is for worse things but applyingtocollege wouldn't let me post it :(

2023.04.12 16:56 Awesome_Socks_69 Is it normal for 6th formers to have as many achievements and extra curricula as American students when applying to university?

I was browsing applyingtocollege and collegeresults and looking at the applications of some of the people there
Then I see that loads of them own business profiting 200k a year, gold international finalist in a bunch of international maths and science competitions, gave speeches at the White House, captain for 50 different sports teams and made it to olympics, have started several charities and foundations that has raised thousands of dollars; and then I still see them being rejected from some top colleges like Harvard or MIT
I was just wondering if these immense things are needed for our UK uni applications to places like Oxbridge
Thanks.

2023.03.31 01:20 Standard-Penalty-876 UCLA USC JHU reject makes it to the Ivy League

SAT:* 1540 (750 EBRW, 790 Math), single-sitting
UW/W GPA and Rank: 4.0/4.237, no official rank, but an honors program I was accepted to internally ranks applicants from your school and takes the top 5%, so probably around there; also graduating with highest honors

Neuroscience award in outreach. Based on outreach project that got published.
Semi finalist in international science poster competition. Made poster on a literature review performed on the neurological disorder I’m at risk of inheriting.
1st in HOSA regional conference in Behavioral Health (1/35). Going to states in a couple months.
Extracurriculars:
Nonprofit founder — worked on neuroscience and mental health education. Raised money for and provided self-care items to the homeless in Detroit
Neuroscience Club Founder — raised money for the neurological disease I’m at-risk for, encouraged neuroscience education
Neuroscience International Competition — selected as one of 20 students to compete. Our presentation on Neurotechnology was published on the organizations website as was the outreach project we developed
Rotary Interact Club — co-president. Helped raise $20k for the city club. Received president’s award (which is given to less than 3% of rotary chapters)
Mental health essay writer for nonprofit. Wrote 9 long-form mental health essays before the nonprofit closed down… Wrote a series on mental health in the school system, especially during quarantine
ESL (English as a Second Language) Tutor. Tutored the same student for two years every week. Raised his reading level from below average to partially advanced.
French Honors Society — vice-president. Helped run club meetings and fundraise for francophone STEM causes like coding in Haiti. Also planning on minoring in French, so that was listed on my academic interests.
Key Club E-board officer —main thing was planning group bond activities. Also planned a day to send 600 cards to st. Jude’s and make tied blankets for those in temporary housing and hospitalized kids.
Fluff:
Co-section leader and volunteer at music camp every summer. Did institute a new cleaning protocol for the dining hall of the camp during COVID, which is being used there still.
YouTube channel (only freshman and soph years). Had like 20k views and 250 subs lol
Essays/LORs/Other:
Poured my heart into these essays. Personal statement was about living at risk of neurological disorder and how it motivated me to pursue medicine and neuro. Had AP Lang. teacher review and he said it’s the best he’s seen. Supps were very good too imo.
Worst essays were USC’s and Hopkins (7/10) Best were the ivies, Michigan, Duke (9/10)
LOinterviews:
Chem — 8/10. She really liked me but I’m guessing she’s not the most compelling writer
AP Psych — 10/10. I still talk to her every other day and she said she wrote a very good one.
Rotary Advisor — 9/10. Loves me and had a creative writer help her write.
Interviews:
Harvard: 9/10, he said I had the most nonprofit work he’s seen and had an extremely impressive academic profile. He also said he recommended me for admissions which he does for about 1/2 of applicants. I made it clear Harvard was my first choice — 1/2 true.
Princeton: 8/10 slightly worse since it was online and shorter. He was really interested in neuro tho and we talked about neuro + music because he was in the choir there.
Schools:
Reach-
  1. PRINCETON ACCEPTED PRINCETON ‘27 🖤🧡
  2. Columbia (dream school) rejected 🥲
  3. Harvard rejected
  4. Yale Rejected
  5. Duke Rejected
  6. Brown Rejected
  7. Penn Rejected
  8. Hopkins Rejected
  9. Vandy Waitlist
  10. NYU accepted CAS
Target-
  1. UCLA (rejected)
  2. USC (deferred -> rejected)
  3. Michigan (accepted)
  4. UCSD & UCI (accepted)
  5. UCD (accepted)
  6. CWRU (waitlist 🤨)
Safety-
  1. American university (accepted w/ presidential scholarship)
  2. Accepted w/ max merit aid (cmich, msu (w/ honors college), rit (w/ honors college - top 1% of applicants), Loyola chicago, etc)
Edit: if you want to know what got me in, I couldn’t tell you. I applied to Princeton within 2 days over my winter break. I pulled an all-nighter to finish Princeton and UPenn. After re-reading my essays, Princeton and Columbia’s were by far my strongest. I think Princeton really values good writers, especially considering the graded written paper. My EC’s were also a huge factor in my acceptance. For reference, I literally did not take a single AP or honors class until junior year—I just wasn’t placed in them. But senior year I was able to manage straight A’s in 5 AP’s and an honors, which I also think played a huge role. Having a solid SAT was significant I’m sure. My Princeton interview helped for sure too as I was able to talk about how all my interest in foreign language, music, and neuroscience clashed and led me to Princeton. I’m really appreciate for applyingtocollege for guiding me through this process.

2023.03.22 05:58 bethebumblebee Does Purdue release all RD rejections together?

We’re going crazy at applyingtocollege. Purdue is releasing the decisions in waves but so far the Purdue decisions megathread only has acceptances. The waves seem to be 1. International acceptances, followed by 2. OOS acceptances. I’m assuming this week will be in-state acceptances but what about rejections? Nobody seems to have received a rejection in RD as of yet. Did this happen in the same way last year? Were all rejections released on the same day?
