2023.06.01 21:24 RandomAppalachian468 Don't fly over Barron County Ohio. [Repost]

The whirring blades of my MD-902 throbbed against the warm evening air, and I smiled.
From 5,000 feet, the ground flew by in a carpet of dark forests and kelly-green fields. The sun hung low on the horizon in a picturesque array of dazzling orange and gold, and I could make out the narrow strip of the Ohio River to my left, glistening in the fading daylight. This time of year, the trees would be full of the sweet aroma of fresh blossoms, and the frequent rains kept small pockets of fluffy white mist hanging in the treetops. It was a beautiful view, one that reminded me of why being a helicopter pilot trumped flying in a jumbo jet far above the clouds every day of the week.
Fourteen more days, and I’m debt free.
That made me grin even more. I’d been working as a charter pilot ever since I obtained my license at age 19, and after years of keeping my nose to the grindstone, I was closing on the final payment for real-estate in western Pennsylvania. With no debt, a fixer-upper house on 30 rural acres all to myself, and a respectable wage for a 26-year-old pilot, I looked forward to the financial freedom I could now enjoy. Maybe I’d take a vacation, somewhere exotic like Venice Italy, or the Dominican Republic. Or perhaps I’d sock the money back for the day I started a family.
“Remember kleineun, a real man looks after his own.”
My elderly ouma’s voice came back from the depths of my memories, her proud, sun-tanned face rising from the darkness. She and my Rhodesian grandfather had emigrated to the US when they were newlyweds, as the violence against white Boer descendants in South Africa spiraled out of control. My mother and father both died in a car crash when I was six, and it had been my grandparents who raised me. Due to this, I’d grown up with a slight accent that many of my classmates found amusing, and I could speak both English, and Afrikaans, the Boer tongue of our former home.
I shifted in my seat, stretched my back muscles, and glanced at the picture taped to my console. Both my parents flanked a grinning, gap-toothed six-year-old me, at the last Christmas we’d spent together. My mother beamed, her dark hair and Italian features a sharp contrast to my father’s sandy blonde hair and blue eyes. Sometimes, I liked to imagine they were smiling at me with pride at how well I flew the old silver-colored bird my company had assigned to me, and that made the long, lonely flights easier to bear.
A flicker caught my eye, and I broke my gaze away from the photograph.
Perched in its small cradle above the controls, my little black Garmin fuzzed over for a few seconds, its screen shifting from brightly colored maps to a barrage of grey static.
Did the power chord come loose?
I checked, ensuring the power-cable for the unit’s battery was plugged into the port on the control panel. It was a brand-new GPS unit, and I’d used it a few times already, so I knew it wasn’t defective. Granted, I could fly and navigate without it, but the Garmin made my time as a pilot so much easier that the thought of going blind was dreadful.
My fuel gauge danced, clicked to empty, then to full, in a bizarre jolt.
More of the gauges began to stutter, the entire panel seeming to develop terrets all at once, and my pulse began to race. Something was wrong, very wrong, and the sludge inside my bowels churned with sour fear.
“Come on, come on.” I flicked switches, turned dials, punched buttons, but nothing seemed to fix the spasming electronics. Every gauge failed, and without warning, I found myself plunged into inky darkness.
Outside, the sun surrendered to the pull of night, the sky darker than usual. A distant rumble of thunder reverberated above the roar of my helicopter’s engine, and I thought I glimpsed a streak of yellowish lightning on the far horizon to my left.
Calm down Chris. We’re still flying, so it must just be a blown fuse. Stay in control and find a place to set her down.
My sweaty palm slid on the cyclic stick, and both feet weighed heavy on the yaw pedals. The collective stuck to my other hand with a nervous vibration, and I squinted against the abyss outside.
Beep.
I jumped despite myself, as the little Garmin on my panel flared back to life, the static pulling aside to reveal a twitching display. Each time the screen glitched, it showed the colorful map detailing my flight path over the ground below, but I noticed that some of the lines changed, the names shifting, as if the device couldn’t decide between two different versions of the world.
One name jutted out at me, slate gray like most of the major county names, appearing with ghostly flickers from between two neighboring ones.
Barron County.
I stared, confused. I’d flown over this section of southeastern Ohio plenty of times, and I knew the counties by heart. At this point, I should have been over the southern end of Noble County, and maybe dipping lower into Washington. There was no Barron County Ohio. I was sure of it.
And yet it shown back at me from the digital landscape, a strange, almost cigar-shaped chunk of terrain carved from the surrounding counties like a tumor, sometimes there, sometimes not, as my little Garmin struggled to find the correct map. Rain began to patter against my cockpit window, and the entire aircraft rattled from a strong gust of wind. Thick clouds closed over my field of vision like a sea of gray cotton.
The blood in my veins turned to ice, and I sucked in a nervous breath.
Land. I had to land. There was nothing else to do, my flight controls weren’t responding, and only my Garmin had managed to come back to life. Perhaps I’d been hit by lightning, and the electronics had been fried? Either way, it was too dark to tell, but a storm seemed to be brewing, and if I didn’t get my feet on the ground soon, I could be in real trouble.
“Better safe than sorry.” I pushed down on the collective to start my slow descent and clicked the talking button for my headset. “Any station, this is Douglass Three-One-Four-Foxtrot, over.”
Nothing.
“Any station, this is Douglass Three-One-Four-Foxtrot, requesting emergency assistance, over.”
Still nothing.
If the radio’s dead, I’m really up a creek.
With my hand shaking, I clicked on the mic one more time. “Any station, this is—”
Like a curtain pulling back, the fog cleared from around my window, and the words stuck in my throat.
Without my gauges, I couldn’t tell just how far I’d descended, but I was definitely very low. Thick trees poked up from the ground, and the hills rolled into high ridges with flat valley floors, fields and pastures pockmarking them. Rain fell all around in cold, silvery sheets, a normal feature for the mid spring in this part of Ohio.
What wasn’t normal, were the fires.
At first, I thought they were forest fires for the amount of smoke and flames that bellowed from each spot, but as I swooped lower, my eyes widened in horror.
They were houses.
Farms, cottages, little clusters that barely constituted villages, all of them belched orange flames and black pillars of sooty smoke. I couldn’t hear above the helicopter blades, but I could see the flashes on the ground, along the road, in between the trees, and even coming from the burning buildings, little jets of golden light that spat into the darkness with anger.
Gunfire. That’s rifle fire, a whole lot of it.
Tiny black figures darted through the shadows, barely discernable from where I sat, several hundred feet up. I couldn’t see much, but some were definitely running away, the streaks of yellow gunfire chasing them. A few dark gray vehicles rumbled down one of the gravel roads, and sprayed fire into the houses as it went. They were fighting, I realized, the people in the trucks and the locals. It was horrific, like something out of war-torn Afghanistan, but worse.
Then, I caught a glimpse of the others.
They didn’t move like the rest, who either fled from the dark vehicles, or fired back from behind cover. These skinny figures loped along with haphazard gaits, many running on all fours like animals, swarming from the trees by the dozens. They threw themselves into the gales of bullets without flinching, attacking anyone within range, and something about the way they moved, so fluid, so fearless, made my heart skip a beat.
What is that?
“Echo Four Actual to unknown caller, please respond, over.”
Choking back a cry of shock, I fumbled at the control panel with clumsy fingers, the man’s voice sharp and stern. I hadn’t realized that I’d let go of the talking button and clicked it down again. “Hello? Hello, this is Douglass Three-One-Four-Foxtrot out of Pittsburgh, over.”
An excruciating moment passed, and I continued to zoom over the trees, the fires falling away behind me as more silent forest took over.
“Roger that Douglass Three-One-Four-Foxtrot, we read you loud and clear. Please identify yourself and any passengers or cargo you might be carrying, over.”
Swallowing hard, I eyed the treetops, which looked much closer than they should have been. How far had I descended? “Echo Four Actual, my name is Christopher Dekker, and I am alone. I’m a charter flight from PA, carrying medical equipment for OSU in Columbus. My controls have been damaged, and I am unable to safely carry on due to the storm. Requesting permission to land, over.”
I watched the landscape slide by underneath me, once catching sight of what looked like a little white church surrounded by smaller huts, dozens of figures in the yard staring up at me as I flew over a towering ridgeline.
“Solid copy on that Douglass Three-One-Four-Foxtrot. Be advised, your transponder shows you to be inside a restricted zone. Please cease all radio traffic, reduce your speed, climb to 3,000 feet and proceed north. We’ll talk you in from there. How copy, over?”
My heart jumped, and I let out a sigh of relief. “Roger that Echo Four Actual, my altimeter is down, but I’ll do my best to eyeball the altitude, over.”
With that, I pulled the collective upward, and tried my best to gauge how far I was by eyesight in the gathering night, rain still coming down all around me. This had to be some kind of disaster or riot, I decided. After all, the voice over the radio sounded like military, and those vehicles seemed to have heavy weapons. Maybe there was some kind of unrest going on here that I hadn’t heard about yet?
Kind of weird for it to happen in rural areas though. Spoiled college kids I get, but never saw farmers get so worked up before. They usually love the military.
Something moved in the corner of my eye, and I turned out of reflex.
My mouth fell open, and I froze, unable to scream.
In the sky beside me, a huge shadow glided along, and its leathery wings effortlessly carved through the gloom, flapping only on occasion to keep it aloft. It was too dark for me to see what color it was, but from the way it moved, I knew it wasn’t another helicopter. No, this thing was alive, easily the size of a small plane, and more than twice the length of my little McDonald Douglass. A long tail trailed behind it, and bore a distinct arrow-shaped snout, with twig-like spines fanned out around the back of its head. Whatever legs it had were drawn up under it like a bird, yet its skin appeared rough and knobby, almost resembling tree bark. Without pause, the gigantic bat-winged entity flew along beside me, as if my presence was on par with an annoying fly buzzing about its head.
Gripping the microphone switch so tight, I thought I’d crack the plastic, I whispered into my headset, forgetting all radio protocol. “T-There’s something up here.”
Static crackled.
“Douglas Three-One-Four-Foxtrot, say again your last, you’re coming in weak and unreadable, over.”
“There’s something up here.” I snarled into the headset, still glued to the controls of the helicopter, afraid to deviate even an inch from my course in case the monstrosity decided to turn on me. “A freaking huge thing, right beside me. I swear, it looks like a bat or . . . I don’t know.”
“Calm down.” The man on the other end of the radio broke his rigorous discipline as well, his voice deep, but level. “It won’t attack if you don’t move too fast. Slowly ease away from it and follow that course until you’re out of sight.”
I didn’t have time to think about how wrong that sounded, how the man’s strict tone had changed to one of knowledge, how he hadn’t been the least surprised by what I’d said. Instead, I slowly turned the helicopter away from the huge menace and edged the speed higher in tiny increments.
As soon as I was roughly two football fields away, I let myself relax, and clicked the mic switch. “It’s not following.”
“You’re sure?”
Eyeing the huge flapping wings, I nodded, then remembered he couldn’t see me. “Yeah, I’m well clear.”
“Good. Thank you, Mr. Dekker.”
Then, the radio went dead.
Something in my chest dropped, a weight that made my stomach roil. This wasn’t right, none of it. Who was that man? Why did he know about the thing I’d just seen? What was I supposed to—
A flash of light exploded from the trees to my right and shot into the air with a long finger of smoke.
What the . . .
On instinct, I jerked the cyclic stick to one side, and the helicopter swung to avoid the rocket.
Boom.
My world shook, metal screeched, and a dozen alarms began to go off inside the cockpit in a cacophony of beeps and sirens. Orange and red flames lit up the night sky just behind me, and the horizon started to spin wildly outside. Heat gushed from the cockpit door, and I smelled the greasy stench of burning oil. The safety belts dug into my shoulders, and with a final slip, the radio headset ripped free from my scalp.
I’m hit.
Desperate, I yanked on the controls, fought the bird even as she spun toward the ground in a wreath of flames, the inky black trees hurtling up to meet me. The helicopter went into full auto-rotation, the sky blurring past outside, and the alarms blared in a screech of doom. Panic slammed through my temples, I screamed at the top of my lungs, and for one brief second, my eyes locked on the little black Garmin still perched atop my control panel.
Its screen stopped twitching and settled on a map of the mysterious Barron County, with a little red arrow at the center of the screen, a few words popping up underneath it.
You are here.
Trees stabbed up into the sky, the belts crushed at my torso, glass shattered all around me, and the world went dark.
Copper, thick, warm, and tangy.
It filled my mouth, stank metallic in my nose, clogged my throat, choking me. In the murkiness, I fought for a surface, for a way out, blind and numb in the dark.
This way, kleineun.
My ouma’s voice echoed from somewhere in the shadows.
This way.
Both eyes flew open, and I gagged, spitting out a stream of red.
Pain throbbed in my ribs, and a heavy pressure sent a tingling numbness through my shoulders. Blood roared inside my temples, and stars danced before my eyes with a dizzying array. Humid night air kissed my skin, and something sticky coated my face, neck, and arms that hung straight up toward the ceiling.
Wait. Not up. Down.
I blinked at the wrinkled, torn ceiling of the cockpit, the glass all gone, the gray aluminum shredded like tissue paper. Just outside the broken windows, thick Appalachian bluegrass and stemmy underbrush swished in a feeble breeze, backlit by flashes of lightning from the thunderstorm overhead. Green and brown leaves covered everything in a wet carpet of triangles, and somewhere nearby, a cricket chirped.
Turning my head from side to side, I realized that I hung upside down inside the ruined helicopter, the top half burrowed into the mud. I could hear the hissing and crackling of flames, the pattering of rain falling on the hot aluminum, and the smaller brush fires around the downed aircraft sizzling out in the damp long grass. Charred steel and burning oil tainted the air, almost as strong as the metallic, coppery stench in my aching nose.
They shot me down. That military dude shot me out of the sky.
It didn’t make sense. I’d followed their orders, done everything they’d said, and yet the instant I veered safely away from whatever that thing in the sky had been, they’d fired, not at it, but at me.
Looking down (or rather, up) at my chest, I sucked in a gasp, which was harder to do that before.
The navy-blue shirt stuck to my torso with several big splotches of dark, rusty red. Most were clean slashes, but two held bits of glass sticking out of them, one alarmingly bigger than the other. They dripped cherry red blood onto my upturned face, and a wave of nausea hit me.
I gotta get down.
I flexed my arms to try and work some feeling back into them, praying nothing was broken. Half-numb from hanging so long, I palmed along my aching body until I felt the buckled for the seat belts.
“Okay.” I hissed between gritted teeth, in an effort to stave off my panic. “You can do this. Just hold on tight. Nice and tight. Here we go . . .”
Click.
Everything seemed to lurch, and I slid off the seat to plummet towards the muck-filled hole in the cockpit ceiling. My fingers were slick with blood and slipped over the smooth faux-leather pilot’s seat with ease. The shoulder belt snagged on the bits of glass that lay just under the left lowest rib, and a flare of white-hot pain ripped through me.
Wham.
I screamed, my right knee caught the edge of the aluminum ceiling, and both hands dove into a mound of leaf-covered glass shards on the opposite side of the hole. My head swam, being right-side-up again enough to make shadows gnaw at the corner of my eyes.
Forcing myself to breath slowly, I fought the urge to faint and slid back to sit on the smooth ceiling. I turned my hands over to see half a dozen bits of clear glass burrowed into my skin like greedy parasites, red blood weeping around the new cuts.
“Screw you.” I spat at the rubbish with angry tears in my eyes. “Screw you, screw you, screw you.”
The shards came out easy enough, and the cuts weren’t that deep, but that wasn’t what worried me. On my chest, the single piece of cockpit glass that remined was almost as big as my palm, and it really hurt. Just touching it felt like self-inflicted torture, but I knew it had to come out sooner or later.
Please don’t nick a vein.
Wiping my hands dry on my jeans, I gripped the shard with both hands, and jerked.
Fire roared over my ribs, and hot blood tickled my already grimy pale skin. I clapped a hand over the wound, pressing down hard, and grunted out a string of hateful expletives that my ouma would have slapped me for.
Lying on my back, I stared around me at the messy cargo compartment of the MD-902. Most of the medical supplies had been in cardboard boxes strapped down with heavy nylon tow-straps, but several cases had ruptured with the force of the impact, spraying bandages, syringes, and pill bottles all over the cluttered interior. Orange flames chewed at the crate furthest to the rear, the tail section long gone, but the foremost part of the hold was intact. Easily a million-dollar mess, it would have made me faint on any other trip, but today it was a godsend.
Half-blind in the darkness, I crawled along with only the firelight and lightning bolts to guide me, my right knee aching. Like a crippled raccoon, I collected things as I went, conscious of the two pallets of intact supplies weighing right over my head. I’d taken several different first-aid courses with some hunting buddies of mine, and the mental reflexes kicked in to help soothe my frazzled mind.
Check for bleeds, stop the worst, then move on.
Aside from my battered chest and stomach, the rest of me remained mostly unharmed. I had nasty bruises from the seatbelts, my right knee swelled, my nose slightly crooked and crusted in blood, but otherwise I was intact. Dowsing every scratch and cut with a bottle of isopropyl alcohol I found, I used butterfly closures on the smaller lacerations that peppered my skin. I wrapped soft white gauze over my abused palms and probed at the big cut where the last shard had been, only stopping when I was sure there were no pieces of glass wedged inside my flesh.
“Not too bad.” I grunted to myself, trying to sound impassive like a doctor might. “Rib must have stopped it. Gonna need stitches though. That’ll be fun.
Pawing through the broken cases, I couldn’t find any suture chord, but just as I was about to give up, I noticed a small box that read ‘medical skin stapler’.
Bingo.
I tore the small white plastic stapler free from its packaging and eyeballed the device. I’d never done this before, only seen it in movies, and even though the cut in my skin hurt, I wondered if this wouldn’t be worse.
You’ve gotta do it. That bleeding needs to stop. Besides, no one’s coming to rescue you, not with those rocket-launching psychos out there.
Taking a deep breath, I pinched the skin around the gash together, and pressed the mouth of the stapler to it.
Click.
A sharp sting, like that of a needle bit at the skin, but it didn’t hurt nearly as bad as the cut itself. I worked my way across the two-inch laceration and gave out a sigh of relief when it was done.
“Not going to bleed to death today.” I daubed ointment around the staples before winding more bandages over the wound.
Popping a few low-grade painkillers that tumbled from the cargo, I crawled wriggled through the nearest shattered window into the wet grass.
Raindrops kissed my face, clean and cool on my sweaty skin. Despite the thick cloud cover, there was enough constant lightning strikes within the storm to let me get glimpses of the world around me. My helicopter lay on its back, the blades snapped like pencils, with bits and pieces of it burning in chunks all around the small break in the trees. Chest-high scrub brush grew all around the low-lying ground, with pockets of standing water in places. My ears still rang from the impact of the crash, but I could start to pick up more crickets, frogs, and even some nocturnal birds singing into the darkness, like they didn’t notice the huge the hulk of flaming metal that had fallen from the sky. Overhead, the thunder rumbled onward, the feeble wind whistling, and there were other flashes on the horizon, orange and red ones, with crackles that didn’t sound quite like lightning.
The guns. They’re still fighting.
Instinctively, I pulled out my cellphone, and tapped the screen.
It fluttered to life, but no matter how I tried, I couldn’t get through to anyone, not even with the emergency function designed to work around having no service. The complicated wonder of our modern world was little better than a glorified paperweight.
Stunned, I sat down with my back to the helicopter and rested my head against the aluminum skin of the craft. How I’d gone from a regular medical supply run to being marooned in this hellish parody of rural America, I didn’t know, but one thig was certain; I needed a plan. Whoever fired the missile could have already contacted my charter company and made up some excuse to keep them from coming to look for me. No one else knew I was here, and even though I now had six staples holding the worst of my injuries shut, I knew I needed proper medical attention. If I wanted to live, I’d have to rescue myself.
My bag. I need to get my go-bag, grab some gear and then . . . head somewhere else.
It took me a while to gather my green canvas paratrooper bag from its place behind the pilot’s seat and fill it with whatever supplies I could scrounge. My knee didn’t seem to be broken, but man did it hurt, and I dreaded the thought of walking on it for miles on end. I focused instead on inventorying my gear and trying to come up with a halfway intelligent plan of action.
I had a stainless-steel canteen with one of those detachable cups on the bottom, a little fishing kit, some duct tape, a lighter, a black LED flashlight with three spare batteries, a few tattered road maps with a compass, a spare pair of socks, medical supplies from the cargo, and a simple forest green plastic rain poncho. I also managed to unearth a functioning digital camcorder my ouma had gotten me for Christmas a few years back, though I wasn’t sure I wanted to do any filming in such a miserable state. Lastly, since it was a private supply run from a warehouse area near Pittsburgh to a direct hospital pad in Ohio, I’d been able to bring my K-Bar, a sturdy, and brutally simple knife designed for the Marine Corps that I used every time I went camping. It was pitiful in comparison to the rifle I wished I had with me, but that didn’t matter now. I had what I had, and I doubted my trusty Armalite would have alleviated my sore knee anyway.
Clicking on my flashlight, I huddled with the poncho around my shoulders inside the wreck of the chopper and peered at the dusty roadmaps. A small part of me hoped that a solution would jump out from the faded paper, but none came. These were all maps of western PA and eastern Ohio. None of them had a Barron County on them anywhere.
The man on the radio said to head north, right before they shot me down. That means they must be camped out to the north of here. South had that convoy and those burning houses, so that’s a no-go. Maybe I can backtrack eastward the way I came.
As if on cue, a soft pop echoed from over the eastern horizon, and I craned to look out the helicopter window, spotting more man-made flashes over the tree tops.
“Great.” I hissed between clenched teeth, aware of how the temperature dipped to a chilly 60 degrees, and how despite the conditions, my stomach had begun to growl. “Not going that way, are we? Westward it is.”
Walking away from my poor 902 proved to be harder than I’d anticipated. Despite the glass, the fizzling fires, and the darkness, it still held a familiar, human essence to it. Sitting inside it made me feel secure, safe, even calm about the situation. In any other circumstance, I would have just stayed with the downed aircraft to wait for help, but I knew the men who shot me down would likely find my crash site, and I didn’t want to be around when they did.
Unlike much of central and western Ohio, southeastern Ohio is hilly, brushy, and clogged with thick forests. Thorns snagged at my thin poncho and sliced at my pant legs. My knee throbbed, every step a form of self-inflicted torture. The rain never stopped, a steady drizzle from above just cold enough to be problematic as time went on, making me shiver. Mud slid under my tennis shoes, and every tree looked ten times bigger in the flickering beam of my cheap flashlight. Icy fear prickled at the back of my neck at some of the sounds that greeted me through the gloom. I’d been camping loads of times, both in Pennsylvania and elsewhere, but these noises were something otherworldly to me.
Strange howls, screeches, and calls permeated the rain-soaked sky, some almost roars, while others bordered on human in their intonation. The more I walked, the softer the distant gunfire became, and the more prevalent the odd sounds, until the shadows seemed to fill with them. I didn’t dare turn off my flashlight, or I’d been completely blind in the dark, but a little voice in the back of my head screamed that I was too visible, crunching through the gloomy forest with my long beam of light stabbing into the abyss. It felt as though a million eyes were on me, studying me, hunting me from the surrounding brush, and I bitterly recalled how much I’d loved the old Survivor Man TV series as a kid.
Not so fun being out in the woods at night. Especially alone.
A twig snapped somewhere behind me, and I whirled on the spot, one trembling hand resting on the hilt of my K-Bar.
Nothing. Nothing but trees, bushes, and rain dripping down in the darkness.
“This is stupid.” I whispered to myself to keep my nerves in check as I slowly spun on the spot. “I should have went eastward anyway. God knows how long I’m going to have to—”
Creak.
A groan of metal-on-metal echoed from somewhere to my right, and I spun to face it, yanking the knife on my belt free from its scabbard. It felt so small and useless in my hand, and I choked down a wave of nauseas fear.
Ka-whump. Creak. K-whump. Creak.
Underbrush cracked and crunched, a few smaller saplings thrashed, and from deep within the gloom, two yellow orbs flared to life. They poked through the mist in the trees, forming into slender fingers of golden light that swept back and forth in the dark.
The soldiers . . . they must be looking for me.
I swallowed hard and turned to slink away.
Ice jammed through my blood, and I froze on the spot, biting my tongue to stop the scream.
It stood not yards away, a huge form that towered a good twelve feet tall in the swirling shadows. Unpolished chrome blended with flash-rusted spots in the faded red paint, and grime-smeared glass shone with dull hues in the flashes of lightning. Where the wheels should have been, the rounded steel axels curved like some enormous hand had bent them, and the tires lay face-down on the muddy ground like big round feet, their hubcaps buried in the dirt. Dents, scrapes, and chips covered the battered thing, and its crooked little radio antenna pointed straight up from the old metal fender like a mast. I could barely make out the mud-coated VW on the rounded hood, and my mind reeled in shock.
Is . . . is that a car?
Both yellow headlights bathed me in a circle of bright, blinding light, and neither I nor the strange vehicle moved.
Seconds ticked by, the screech-thumping in the background only growing closer. I realized that I couldn’t hear any engine noises and had yet to see any soldiers or guns pointed my way. This car looked old, really old, like one of those classic Volkswagen Beetles that collectors fought over at auctions. Try as I might, I couldn’t see a driver inside the murky, mold-smeared windows.
Because there wasn’t one.
Lightning arched across the sky overhead, and the car standing in front of me blinked.
Its headlights slid shut, as if little metal shades had crawled over the bulbs for a moment and flicked open again. Something about that movement was so primal, so real, so lifelike, that every ounce of self-control I had melted in an instant.
Cursing under my breath, I lunged into the shrubs, and the world erupted around me.
Under my shoes, the ground shook, and the car surged after me in a cacophony of ka-thumps that made my already racing heart skip several beats. A weather-beaten brown tow truck from the 50’s charged through the thorns to my left, it’s headlights ablaze, and a dilapidated yellow school bus rose from its hiding place in the weeds to stand tall on four down-turned axel-legs. They all flicked their headlights on like giants waking from their slumber, and as I dodged past them, they each blared their horn into the night in alarm.
My breaths came short and tight, my knee burned, and I crashed through thorns and briars without thought to how badly I was getting cut up.
The cheap poncho tore, and I ripped it away as it caught on a tree branch.
A purple 70’s Mustang shook off its blanket of creeping vines and bounded from a stand of trees just ahead, forcing me to swerve to avoid being run over, my adrenaline at all-time highs.
This can’t be happening, this can’t be happening, this can’t be happening.
Slipping and sliding, I pushed through a stand of multiflora rose, and stumbled out into a flat, dark expanse.
I almost skidded to a stop.
What had once been a rather large field stood no taller than my shoestrings, the grass charred, and burnt. The storm above illuminated huge pieces of wreckage that lay scattered over the nearly 40-acre plot, and I could just make out the fire-blackened hulk of a fuselage resting a hundred yards away. The plane had been brought down a while ago it seemed, as there weren’t any flames left burning, and I threw myself toward it in frenzied desperation.
Burned grass and greasy brown topsoil slushed underfoot, and I could hear the squelching of the cars pursing me. Rain soaked me to the bone, and my lungs ached from sucking down the damp night air. A painful stich crept into my side, and I cursed myself for not putting in more time for cardio at the gym.
Something caught my left shoelace, and I hurtled to the ground, tasting mud and blood in between my teeth.
They’ve got me now.
I clawed at the mud, rolled, and watched a tire slam down mere inches from where my head had been. The Mustang loomed over me and jostled for position with the red Volkswagen and brown tow truck, the school bus still a few yards behind them. They couldn’t seem to decide who would get the pleasure of stomping me to death, and like a herd of stampeding wildebeest, they locked bumpers in an epic shoving match.
On all fours, I scampered out from under the sparring brutes, and dashed for the crumpled airplane, a white-painted DC-3 that looked like it had been cut in half by a gargantuan knife blade. I passed a snapped wing section, the oily remains of a turbo-prop engine, and a mutilated wheel from the landing gear. Climbing over a heap of mud, I squeezed into the back of the ruined flight cabin and dropped down into the dark cargo hold.
Wham.
No sooner had my sneakers hit the cold metal floor, and the entire plane rocked from the impact of something heavy ramming it just outside. I tumbled to my knees, screaming in pain as, once again, I managed to bash the sore one off a bracket in the wall.
My hand smeared in something gooey, and I scrabbled for my flashlight.
It clicked on, a wavering ball of white light in the pitch darkness, and I fought the urge to gag. “Oh man . . .”
Three people, or what was left of them, lay strewn over the narrow cargo area. Claret red blood coated the walls, caked on the floor, and clotted under my mud-spattered shoes. Bits of flesh and viscera were stuck to everything, and tatters of cloth hung from exposed sections of broken bone. An eerie set of bloody handprints adorned the walls, and the only reason I could tell it had been three people were the shoes; all of them bore anklebones sticking out above blood-soaked socks. It smelled sickly sweet, a strange, nauseas odor that crept into my nose and settled on the back of my tongue like an alien parasite.
Something glinted in the beam of my flashlight, and my pulse quickened as I pried the object loose from the severed arm that still clung to it.
“Hail Mary full of Grace.” I would have grinned if it weren’t for the fact that the plane continued to buck and roll under the assault from the cars outside.
The pistol looked old, but well-maintained, aside from the light coating of dark blood that stained its round wooden handle. It felt heavy, but good in my hand, and I turned it over to read the words, Waffenfabrik Mauser stenciled into the frame, with a large red 9 carved into the grip. For some reason, it vaguely reminded me of the blasters from Star Wars.
I fumbled with a little switch that looked like a safety on the back of the gun and stumbled toward a gap in the plane’s dented fuselage to aim out at the surrounding headlights.
Bang.
The old gun bucked reliably in my hand, its long barrel spitting a little jet of flame into the night. I had no idea if I hit anything, but the attacking cars recoiled, their horns blaring in confusion.
They turned, and scuttled for the tree line as fast as their mechanical legs could go, the entire ordeal over as fast as it had begun.
Did I do that?
Perplexed, I stared down at the pistol in my hand.
Whoosh.
A large, inky black shadow glided down from the clouds, and the yellow school bus moved too slow to react in time.
With a crash, the kicking nightmarish vehicle was thrown onto its side, spraying glass and chrome trim across the muddy field. Its electro-synth horn blared with wails of mechanical agony, as two huge talon-like feet clamped down on it, and the enormous head of the flying creature lowered to rip open its engine compartment.
The horn cut out, and the enormous flying entity jerked its head back to gulp down a mass of what looked like sticky black vines from the interior of the shattered bus.
At this range, I could see now that the flying creature bore two legs and had its wings half-tucked like a vulture that had descended to feed on roadkill. Its head turned slightly, and in the glow of another lightning bolt, my jaw went slack at the realization of what it was.
A tree trunk. It’s a rotted tree trunk.
I couldn’t tell where the reptilian beast began, and where the organic tree components ended, the upper part of the head shaped like a log, while the lower jaw resembled something out of a dinosaur movie. Its skin looked identical to the outside of a shagbark hickory but flexed with a supple featheriness that denoted something closer to skin. Sharp branch-like spines ranged down its back, and out to the end of its tail, which bore a massive round club shaped like a diseased tree-knot. Crouched on both hind legs, it braced the hooked ends of its folded wings against the ground like a bat, towering higher than a semi-truck. Under the folds of its armored head, a bulging pair of chameleon-like eyes constantly spun in their sockets, probing the dark for threats while it ate.
One black pupil locked onto the window I peered through, and my heart stopped.
The beast regarded me for a moment, with a curious, sideways sniff.
With a proud, contemptful head-toss, the shadow from the sky parted rows of razor-sharp teeth to let out a roar that shook the earth beneath my feet. It was the triumphant war cry of a creature that sat at the very top of the food chain, one that felt no threat from the fragile two-legged beings that walked the earth all around it. It hunted whenever it wanted, ate whatever it wanted, and flew wherever it wanted. It didn’t need to rip the plane apart to devour me.
Like my hunter-gatherer ancestors from thousands of years ago, I wasn’t even worth the energy it would take to pounce.
I’m hiding in the remains of the cockpit now, which is half-buried under the mud of the field, enough to shield the light from my screen so that thing doesn’t see it. My service only now came back, and it’s been over an hour since the winged beast started in on the dead bus. I don’t know when, or how I’m going to get out of here. I don’t know when anyone will even see this post, or if it will upload at all. My phone battery is almost dead, and at this point, I’m probably going to have to sleep among the corpses until daylight comes.
A dead man sleeping amongst friends.
If you live in the Noble County area in southeastern Ohio, be careful where you drive, fly, and boat. I don’t know if it’s possible to stumble into this strange place by ground, but if so, then these things are definitely headed your way.
If that happens . . . pray that they don’t find you.

2023.06.01 21:10 duckowucko [Long-Schall] 1940 Republican National Convention

[Long-Schall] 1940 Republican National Convention
As the Republican Party heads into the 1940 election, there is a noticeable lack of progressives seeking the Presidency. Notable ones such as Senator Robert La Follette are either supporting President Long's bid for reelection or joining the Anti-fascist Alliance. As such, the primary this time around is divided only between more traditional Republicans; divided mainly on foreign policy.

Wendell Lewis Willkie

Lawyer from Indiana
Wendell Willkie was a supporter of Roosevelt's campaign in 1932 and Garner's campaign in the 1933 special election, but had also donated to Vice President Phillip La Follette's campaign in 1936, since being a Republican. Willkie offers a take on liberal republicanism that even many moderates can get behind. Despite holding no major political office, he has long been in consideration for the Republican nomination since 1938 with his unmatched charisma and policy reach. Willkie suggests that the President take a less restrictive policy on the wealthy, arguing that straining them too much could cause another run on the banks like in 1929. He also offers plans to increase world trade especially in the medical and arms industry.
While Willkie offers a less Isolationist policy, he has stated that he would not pursue outright war in Europe, but instead proposes extensive trade deals with the British and suggested support toward the Free French and the Chinese. This has earned him backlash, however, with some believing that such open trade with nations at war could more easily bring the United States into a war it could not afford. On an unrelated note, Willkie has shared his support of many of the programs instituted by President George Norris and the more moderate legislation of President Long. It is believed he would maintain much of the existing structures put in place and perhaps even pursue moderate expansion of things such as Social Security, education, and infrastructure.

Robert Alphonso Taft

Senator from Ohio since 1939
Since the election of Huey Long in 1936, Taft has been a leading member of conservatives that blatantly and vehemently oppose much of the "Share Our Wealth" plans put forth by the President. He offers a plan of isolationism going forward unless deliberately attacked, a stance that the President seemed to have supported this year as France fell. Senator Taft supports the idea of small government and laissez-faire economics as the general economy gets healthier over time; though he suggests a slow transition in order to not upset the economic balance.
Taft would likely defund many of the programs instituted by President Long or Norris over their terms, notably the National Health Insurance plan and Social Security. Taft is in favor of putting oil sanctions on both the Japanese empire and Germany, but his favor for global politics seems to end there. Even if Taft were not to win, he still holds a significant amount of power over conservative Republicans and even some Democrats in Congress.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

General Comments

I ordered some ‘hype’ items and some boring items in this haul because they were cheaper than buying retail and I just wanted to try some things out. I’m not overly worried about being called out because I’m 32 and I don’t care, but have checked other reviews/images of the items to make my comments about accuracy.
List of items in haul: FK Reverse Mochas, Panda Dunks, Syracuse Dunks, Dior B23s, Gucci x Adidas Gazelles, Sambas, Converse, Hermes Oran Sandals, Essentials tracksuit, shorts & quarter zip, Goyard cardholder & AirPod case, Supreme Pill case, Tiffany money clip
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Agent: Pandabuy

Comments: This is my first haul and Pandabuy was super easy and clear to use, I wasn’t confused by the process at any stage. The communication was great, including asking if I wanted refunds when sellers took ages to send. Shipping was easy and quick, imo.
Sidenote: I used After Ship to track as it had more detail for my country than 17track. It was very accurate with delivery times etc. Parcels were delivered on my end by ParcelForce.

Parcel 2: TS Reverse Mocha AJ1, Dior B23, Dunks x2 (no box), card holder, Hermes Oran sandals.
Notes: The vacuum bag was pointless, it wasn't actually vacuum packed, just in an unsealed vacuum bag in the parcel. Added the moisture bag as it was only CNY 5 and thought it might discourage too much rooting around in the parcel lol. Also asked them to add in foam packing material and a note saying “from grandma” or something. Trying some different things.
Border Force checked only the Hermes and TS boxes, they were opened and resealed with Border Force tape.

Shoes

Comments: I'm not an expert on any of these shoes so take what I say with a pinch of salt and look at the in hand pics and make your own decision.

Travis Scott Reverse Mocha Air Jordan 1 - FK Batch (EU40)

Seller: CSJ
Price: ¥360 (+ ¥10) // £41 // $51
W2C // PandaBuy Link // QC // In Hand
Accuracy: 9/10 // Comfort: 8/10 // Quality: 8/10 // Fit:
Notes: 4 days to warehouse. Shipped with box because I like the box.
The box was a little damaged, but not wearing the box etc etc. They're comfortable enough, my first AJ1 lows, not as comfortable as the highs I have (retail) and maybe don't feel quite as good quality, but quality is off with a lot of retail Nikes in general so that could just be the TS's anyway. The laces feel kind of plasticky, but idk if that's normal for this model. Suede seems ok to me, but I'm no expert. In terms of flaws, The "Cactus Jack" under the white swoosh is slightly misaligned compared to retail. The AIR is slightly different to retail on the tongue. But they look pretty good to me, not complaining. Obviously I could be completely wrong. I'm happy.

Panda Dunks and Syracuse Dunk Low - VT Batch (EU40)

Seller: Passerby
Price: ¥199 each (+ ¥20) // £23 each // $28 each
W2C // PandaBuy Link // QC // In Hand
Accuracy: 9/10 // Comfort: 8/10 // Quality: 9/10 // Fit: TTS
Notes: 2 days to warehouse. Shipped without box.
Shipped these without the box so they were a little beat up when they arrived, but were fine as soon as they were on feet. The Syracuse were sent with spare laces in an SB bag but not SB laces, a bit strange. In terms of accuracy, the Nike logo isn't as puffy as on retail. On the Syracuse, the orange on the liner top bit of the shoe doesn't really match well, but not super noticeable. Tags on the tongue don't seem quite right and maybe the NIKE on the back is a bit small. No major flaws and these are so common I don't think anyone will call them out as such. In terms of fit, they are close to TTS I'd say, but the Pandas are a little tighter than the Syracuse.

Dior B23 (EU40)

Seller: WWTOP
Price: ¥400 (+ ¥10) // £45.50 // $56.50
Colour: Black and White High Top
W2C // PandaBuy Link // QC // In Hand
Accuracy: 9.5/10 // Comfort: 9/10 // Quality: 10/10 // Fit: TTS
Notes: 10 days to warehouse.
Box was damaged. These are a lot more comfortable than usual 'Converse' style shoes, actually feel really good on foot. Fit a little large for me, but not much, so I'd say close to TTS. I don't think the tongue or the material have the kind of leathery quality that the retails have but you'd have to touch it or look inside it to see that. I think the translucent layer is meant to touch on the front half of the shoe, but not too noticeable. Overall pretty good reps.

Adidas Sambas (Size EU40)

Seller: 7up
Price: ¥134.83 (+ ¥10) // £15 // $19
Colour: White and Black
W2C // PandaBuy Link // QC // In Hand
Accuracy: 7/10 // Comfort: 9/10 // Quality: 8/10 // Fit: TTS
Notes: 5 days to warehouse. Shipped without the box and tags and they were fine when they arrived, not mashed up at all.
There are some issues with this pair: you can see in the pictures that the suede on one shoe is slightly darker than the other (this is more noticeable in pictures than IRL), the “SAMBA” is way too close to the stripes, the corner of the lacing unit should be aligned with the edge of the first stripe, the tongue seems a little short but that’s not noticeable on-foot.
Overall, it’s a pair of Sambas, nobody’s going to LC them and they’re comfy, so I’m really not bothered by the flaws. Feels like leather but smells like plastic. I’m happy with this pair for £15. Let’s see how they hold up.

Black and Cream Converse Chuck 70 Hi (Size EU40)

Seller: ezreps
Price: ¥150 (+ ¥10) // £17 // $21
Colour: Black & White/Cream
W2C // PandaBuy Link // QC // In Hand
Accuracy: 8/10 // Comfort: 7/10 (but I feel this way about all Converse Chucks) // Quality: 7/10 (but not far from retail) // Fit: TTS (which in my experience is slightly large)
Notes: 5 days to warehouse. Also shipped without the box and tags and they were fine when they arrived, no damage.
Again, some small flaws with these: star on the back tag thing on the heel is too large, sole’s maybe a little thick (idk). But again, Converse Hi Tops, nobody cares or will LC. They feel like normal Converse, where quality is not amazing. But honestly, I’d never spend £85 on a retail pair of these when you can get these for under £20 and they’re fine. Meant to actually buy regular Converse Hi Tops in B&W but bought these by accident, they’re fine though, happy enough with these.

Brown Adidas x Gucci Gazelles (Size EU41)

Seller: Xiaorao Men's Clothing Discount Store
Price: ¥388 // £44 // $54
Colour: Brown Gucci Print
W2C // PandaBuy Link // QC // In Hand
Accuracy: 8/10 // Comfort: 8/10 // Quality: 7/10 // Fit: 1/2 size small
Notes: 6 days to warehouse. Shipped with the box and stuff because I bought these for my mum. Came with the box, tags and some weird plain dustbags and one Adidas x Gucci dustbag (like for one shoe) and a carrier bag. Box was mashed up in a few places, but not wearing the box so that’s fine (pictures of the packaging here).
I love these shoes, they’re fun. As I said, bought them for mumsy but they’re a bit too small for her but fit me, so another one in the haul for me now! These look great, but do have flaws. The “G” of Gazelle on the left shoe is shoddy AF (shown in in-hand pics). Print of the “Gucci” logo on the back is printed pretty badly. They don’t feel as comfortable or good quality as the plain Sambas that I bought for myself, but this could be because they’re canvas. Print looks alright to me. Tongue doesn’t feel great, and might be a bit short, but doesn’t seem too noticeable on foot. Going to buy another pair, a size bigger for mum. For £45 vs. £700+ mum’s happy, and now I have a pair so I’m happy too.

Brown Hermes Oran Sandals (EU 42)

Seller: Fisherman
Price: ¥480 // £55 //$68
W2C: WhatsApp (+86) 16602067117 (I bought via this link)
QC //In Hand // Retail (for reference)
Accuracy: 9/10 // Comfort: 7/10 (but they're leather sandals with wooden bottoms, not exactly comfortable shoes in any case) // Quality: 10/10 // Fit: TTS but narrow
Notes: 11 days to warehouse, sent QC directly (before sending to warehouse) after 7 days. Communication 10/10.
Another pair for mum. She really wanted this pair so I looked around and Fisherman seemed to have decent ones. He had good communication, I recommend him as a seller after this interaction. He told me they were TTS and length-wise they're good but you'd need to have quite narrow feet. I have narrow feet but mumsy doesn't - so she's going to have to stretch them out a bit.
They're leather. The stitching is maybe a bit bright-white compared to retail and the foot-pad thing is a bit square - this is common on all reps of these sandals and you can't see it on foot. They look like really good reps overall, mum's definitely not going to get called out on these and she's happy.

Clothing

Comments: Ordered different Essentials bits from different sellers, wanted to see the difference and I’m mostly concerned about comfort. Added images and QC and everything so everyone can check out the stuff from these sellers for their own information. I’m not adept at legit checking Essentials so you’ll be able to see the flaws in the pictures, but I won’t necessarily. For me, I’ll wear most of it regardless because I can wear it at home and it’s comfy AF.
Also, I’ve put them through the wash and reported how they’ve held up after a wash. At present, I can’t vouch for any more quality/longevity than that.

Essentials Tracksuit (Small) - 1688

Seller: 1688 - Ningbo Yinzhou
Price: Hoody ¥130 (£15/$18) + Trackpants ¥110 (£12.50/$16) (+ ¥12)
Colour: Moss
QC // In Hand
Hoody: W2C // PandaBuy Link
Pants: W2C // PandaBuy Link
Accuracy: 6.5/10 // Comfort: 10/10 // Quality: 9/10 // Fit: Hoody oversized, pants a bit small.
Notes: 4 days to warehouse. I was aware the seller didn’t take refunds before they sent (Pandabuy agent told me ahead of time) but thought I’d go ahead and get it anyway because I know I’ll wear it either at home or on school trips (I’m a teacher) that I have to go on and not worry about clothes getting messed up.
First the good, super warm, really nice weight to them and super comfortable. One of the most comfortable hoodies I own. The hoody is oversized and quite large on me but the pants are really tight but still comfy. I think together they look a bit odd because of the size difference (see fit pics). Pant legs and sleeves are quite long, so if you’re tall these will still work.
Flaws: The main problem is the wonky and thin font on the front of the hoody. This is a bit annoying Also, inside tags aren’t great. Probably way more because these just seem fairly inaccurate all round.
All in all, it’s a comfortable tracksuit for less than £30 all in. I’m going to try another 1688 seller next time, as I’ve seen some decent ones in the subreddits from there.
Held up good after a wash and still super warm, soft and fluffy. None of the print peeled or anything.

Essentials Shorts (Small) - 1688

Seller: 1688 - Lu'an Jiangzuo Electronic Commerce Co., Ltd.
Price: ¥50 (+ ¥6) // £6 // $7
Colour: Matcha Green (plus velvet)
W2C // PandaBuy Link // QC // In Hand
Accuracy: /10 // Comfort: 10/10 // Quality: /10 // Fit: TTS
Notes: 4 days to warehouse.
So. Comfortable. Don’t know if they’re the most accurate, don’t care that much since they were £6 and I haven’t taken them off since getting them. I’m not sure anyone would legit check shorts that closely, but they’re certainly not doing it to me. Will buy more, love these. Worst bag of the selection, but we don’t wear the bag.
Held up good after a wash and still super warm, soft and fluffy. None of the print peeled or anything.

Essentials Quarter Zip (Medium) - Gman

Seller: Gman
Price: ¥235 (+ ¥12) // £27 // $33
Colour: Avocado (same colour as the Matcha Green shorts - think it's actually 'Sage Green' in Essentials)
W2C // PandaBuy Link // QC // In Hand
Accuracy: /10 // Comfort: 9/10 // Quality: /10 // Fit:
Notes: 5 days to warehouse. Ordered a size M as this was the smallest size available from Man.
From Gman, seems good quality. It doesn’t feel as soft or comfy as the tracksuit or shorts tbh. This was the one Essentials item that I really wanted to get, so a bit disappointed that it’s too big for me. Ultimately, this is comedy large on me, so I will most likely give it away or sell it and have to get this from a different seller (recommendations welcome).
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Accessories/Random

Goyard Cardholder

Seller: u[30467653
Price: ¥35 // £4 // $5
Colour: Orange
W2C // PandaBuy Link // QC // In Hand
Accuracy: 6/10 // Quality: 7/10
Notes: 16 days to warehouse.
Had to get the FashionReps classic ¥35 cardholder. Not overly bothered by accuracy tbh but seems ok. Feels nice, looks nice. The Ys don’t touch, so maybe I’ll get called out. I like it though and that’s all that matters.

‘Goyard’ AirPod Case

Seller: Chinese cabbage mobile phone case
Price: ¥14.80 // £1.60 // $2
Colour: "Orange Stripes"
W2C // PandaBuy Link // QC // In Hand
Accuracy: No idea (pretty sure this is fantasy) // Quality: 8/10
Notes: 2 days to warehouse.
I ordered orange (I wanted something that would match the cardholder, and this is more muted and not orange like a lot of the Goyard stuff). But I needed an AirPod case, it fits my AirPods and it’s sturdy, so it does the job and looks pretty nice. It was under £2. Not much more to say, might try and find one more like what I wanted but it’s no biggie.

Supreme Pill Case

Seller: Plaything Research Institute
Price: ¥20 //£2 // $3
W2C // PandaBuy Link // QC // In Hand
Accuracy: 9/10 // Quality: 9/10
Notes: 4 days to warehouse.
Just needed something to keep my meds in. It’s pretty accurate from what I can tell, but again not super bothered about accuracy - I put 9/10 because I’m sure there are some flaws but what they are idk. I will say this is very small, there’s no way I can keep all of my meds in there given that some of them are larger tablets. Also, now I’m wondering if it’s safe, I’ve disinfected it so I’m sure it’s fine?

Tiffany & Co Money Clip

Seller: Baojibao Zhongbao Shangpin Collection
Price: ¥16 (+ ¥10) // £3 // $4
Colour: 'YQJ101-silver wide and long 6 bottles'
W2C // PandaBuy Link // QC // In Hand
Accuracy: 6/10 // Quality: 6/10
Notes: 4 days to warehouse.
Needed a money clip - don’t like trying to stuff cash into my card holders. Did cut through one of my notes when I pulled it out, so I needed to pull it apart a bit and loosen it up. When I did that there was a big flaw which is that there’s a bit where the silver coating has come off, presumably from rubbing against each other (hard to describe, you can see it in the pics) and it had created a sharp bit. Filed it down with some sandpaper and it’s fine now, no more cutting the notes.
It’s not the most accurate, the engraving isn’t deep enough, it’s a bit too shiny and the 1897 is too wide. But idc, it does the job and it was £3.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The End

That’s a wrap. Thanks for reading (sorry it was so long). I’ll be doing another summer haul soon - lots of shorts and t shirts and probably more trainers, so looking forward to that.
If this review was crap, sorry. Let me know what I can do better next time!

Vyvanse shortage!

📷
We live in nyc and can’t find Vyvanse of any dosage for our teen who has been in stimulants since 4 years old (you read that correctly! For kindergarten placement, thr neuropsychologist told us he needed to go to a school for kiddos on the spectrum who had enough adults to manage him unless he was on stimulants, because he wasn’t able to do any testing until he was on meds!)
We can’t even find short or long acting alternatives to Vyvanse (our dr would prescribe them)
To give you an idea of how much he needs it, his elementary school SPECIAL NEEDS school called us to pick him up the one day we forgot to give him meds. In high school he flunked a test the day he forgot to take them. (He is normally an A student, like most of you with adhd he is smart)
We are desperate. We have called my home state Maryland(even though our insurance will not cover it out of state) so that family could fedex it (as suggested by our pharmacist since others are doing it) but I can’t find it.
We have begged our mail order pharmacy. Nope. None.
We will go anywhere at this point, we will rent a car and drive or fly there, we have family in Ohio and California. We will pay full price, we will buy someone’s. (We are now using old pills with a lower dosage that we kept and supplementing with short acting Ritalin dr oked)
We are also willing to fly to Toronto Canada!
Can anyone tell us if your area has it?
He’s got testing coming out and he flunked a test earlier this year when he forgot meds (he is an A student when on his meds).
Help!! I know you guys will understand…
TIA

2023.06.01 15:56 Salty_Invite_757 [Kings Island][Kentucky Kingdom] Trip Report 5/30-5/31

Just got back from a 3 day trip to Ohio/Kentucky. My son and I planned on hitting King's Island for a day then a quick stopover at Kentucky Kingdom on the way back home. Our first stop was the National Museum of the Air Force in Dayton, and while it isn't related to roller coasters it was an absolute delight to see all of these birds up close. The XB-70, SR-71, B2 and Memphis Belle were highlights!
We stayed at the Hampton Inn in Mason, a decent and well-kept hotel with free breakfast - always a big plus in this economy. We spent one whole day at Kings Island on Tuesday. It was hot but manageable. We had a free meal included in our tickets and split a burger at the Brewhouse; it was good! Not the best but definitely not the worst theme park food I've had. We left around 2PM to take it easy so we could recharge for the run-up to park close. We got back to KI around 6 and had a blast for the rest of our day! We snagged the last night ride on The Beast before they shut down the line at 9:30, AND we timed our last ride on Mystic Timbers with the fireworks so as we were leaving the ride the show started up immediately - it felt like some Disney-level theme park magic. Seeing the drones spell out Kings Island in the sky left our jaws on the floor. Overall a fantastic park with a welcoming and warm vibe, and some of the best ops in the industry.
Kentucky Kingdom was a quick (and I mean QUICK) stopover on our way back home. We got there early on Wednesday and I got 4 more credits before calling it a day. We stayed for a little over an hour and I feel like we got our money's worth from Lightening Run and Storm Chaser alone. We enjoyed our hour at KK, but all of the coasters felt like "one and dones", and I really just drove here for the credits (and the fridge magnets…I used to collect smashed pennies but I didn't know what to do with them, then shot glasses but then I stopped drinking, so now its magnets from our trips that we are covering our fridge with). The park itself has a very odd layout and kind of feels slapped together in places, but the ops were great and everyone was friendly.
Here's my breakdown of the rides themselves:
Kings Island:
Flight of Fear x1: 8/10, Great launch, theming and first half. Like I told my kid before we boarded, its like Space Mountain on crack.
Orion x1: 9/10, Outstanding speed, airtime and pacing. Just wish it had 1-2 more elements to round it out.
Backlot Stunt Coaster x1: 8/10, Fantastic punchy launch and fun theming. Got some serious laterals on that parking garage helix!
The Beast x4: 10/10, DAMN this this is a BEAST. Thanks to this subreddit we stuck with Row 17 and it was butter-smooth the whole time (I'm getting too old for the jostling that normally comes with wooden coasters) which allowed us to enjoy the scenery and the forces. That banked drop into the final helix is such a rush, hitting the bottom of that hill is a top tier roller coaster moment. FANTASTIC night ride, the only thing that's come close for me is Outlaw Run at night.
Mystic Timbers x3: 8/10, We thought this was kinda mid in the daytime, but it hits different at night. I think the stuff with the shed was ill-conceived, but it could be utilized during Halloween (I'm assuming they have scare actors around that time of year? The floor seemed to accommodate foot traffic, but I could be wrong). Its fast and frenetic but like Orion its missing 1-2 elements, especially given its speed once it hits the brakes.
Flying Ace Aerial Chase x1: 5/10, We rode this after eating and thought it would be a nice ride to do while our food settled. It was an average family ride, a bit rougher than it looks but fine for what it is. One train ops made it a slog to wait for.
Adventure Express x2: 8/10, Probably my favorite Arrow mine train. Cheeky theming, long layout and a great troll at the end. Transitions were rough but that added to the theme.
The Bat x1: 8/10, Fast, scenic and intense! An enjoyable albeit brief flight through the woods in a well-shaded corner of the park.
Banshee x1: 10/10, B&M inverts are some of my least-favored coasters due to the utter lack of visibility on any row but the first, but luckily we got to ride this bastard in the front row. WAY more intense than any other B&M invert I've ridden, and that's including the Dueling Dragons. It's an all-timer!
Invertigo x1: 8/10, A solid boomerang with a couple of fun gimmicks. I was expecting a ton of head rattle due to the manufacturer and restrains, but it was fine. A lot more intense than it looks, pretty underrated ride.
Diamondback x1: 10/10, Everything here is fantastic, the pacing, airtime, speed and location put this one near the top for B&M hypers. I still prefer Mako and Goliath, but Diamondback gives them a run for their money!
Racer x1: 7/10, An enjoyable classic! Didn't feel painfully rough (but was the roughest woodie of the trip for sure).
Kentucky Kingdom:
Lightening Run x1: 9/10, This little guy packs a PUNCH! Airtime out the wazoo and doesn't let up for a second! I thought it destroyed my thighs, that is until I rode…
Storm Chaser x1: 8/10, Almost too much of a good thing - that good thing being ejector airtime. The layout is unconventional in that RMC kind of way, and that first drop is all kinds of weird. But the ejector became painful, knocking it down a peg. The very definition of a "one and done".
Thunder Run x1: 9/10, A great underrated woodie! It was not nearly as rough as I was expecting - still some jackhammering here and there, but all manageable. I didn't have to brace myself as much as the previous two coasters, which was a welcome experience after being assaulted like that.
Roller Skater x1: 6/10, A fine family coaster. Not much to say about it really, just rode it for the credit (and since Kentucky Flier was down).
Overall a very enjoyable trip! 3 days, 2 theme parks, 1 museum, 850 miles and 4 states. With this trip my coaster count is up to 95, while my son doesn't have one because he thinks it's weird and lame that I keep track of things like that. Teenagers. But I know he enjoyed himself based on the reserved amount of "teenage angst" he experienced during this trip. I think the short lines and quick pace kept him entertained throughout. Which is what it's all about!

2023.06.01 13:21 eZGjBw1Z New and Changed Products - June 2023

Usually around the first of the month we have a batch of price changes and this month is no different. According to the "How to Become a Contract Liquor Agent" document, "The Agent must also complete price changes that occur at the first of the month..."
Number of Price Increases: 2 Number of Price Decreases: 136 Number of New Products: 44 Number of Status Changes: 4
I plan to reply to this post throughout the month if I notice other significant changes happening or at the end of the month before the next update to keep the changes in one place. Here's a link back to what changed in May 2023: American Whiskey, Brandy, Canadian Whiskey, Cordial, Gin, and Irish Whisky, Rum, Scotch, Tequila, and Vodka.
For each category I've sorted by the amount of the price increase or decrease. New products are shown first, then price decreases are shown in decreasing order followed by price increases in increasing order. At the end are products with other changes unrelated to price.
Current product status is indicated on each line as follows. OHLQ hasn't publicly explained what these things mean but I've included my best guess below.

American Whiskey

Brandy

Canadian Whiskey

Cordial

Gin

Irish Whisky

Rum

Scotch

Tequila

Vodka

2023.06.01 06:05 RankTheVoteOhio1 Newsletter: May Recap & June Plans - Local Action Near You!

Buckeyes,
Last month was our first with 1,000 signups expressing interest in Ranked-Choice Voting (RCV), and this May we shattered our record again with more than 2,000 in a single month! In total, we're less than 2,000 1,800 signups away from our goal of 10,000 by July 1st, so we're pushing to smash our goal to impress our national partners. Can you help by asking your family and friends to sign our online petition?
Yesterday, we made a decision with our partners to delay our viability assessment until after Ohio's August 8 special election because that will determine whether a ballot initiative for RCV – or any issue – will be possible in 2024. Rank the Vote Ohio is allied with pro-democracy groups from across the political spectrum to protect citizen-led ballot measures, and we're not slowing down: Ohio needs Majority Rule for ballot initiatives and for elections through Instant Runoffs with RCV.
Our May Statewide Meeting featured Akron's new Mayor-Elect Shammas Malik. After introducing some of our new interns, we talked about the importance of #VoteNoInAugust and an opportunity to help bring RCV to University Heights! Here's the video and agenda with more details and links.
Now, we're excited to announce our calendar for June is filling up with events in all regions of Ohio!
Our Southeast Ohio Launch makes June our first month with active chapters in all 5 regions, and University Heights could be the first city in Ohio to vote for RCV since it was repealed in other cities by corrupt party bosses! We also have virtual events on our calendar, including our June Statewide Meeting featuring our bipartisan grasstops allies, former Ohio Representatives Gene Krebs and Sean Logan.
Thanks for your support, and we look forward to seeing you soon!
Cheers!

P.S. Can you donate to help save democracy in our constitutional republic by giving Ohio more effective representation with majority rule?

2023.06.01 03:12 DiskAdministrative76 OH - Medical insurance told me I would be covered until the end of the month after quitting job, now they say my employer sets that date and I am SOL for a $20k medical bill

I live, worked, and had surgery in Ohio. September 2022 I went on maternity leave from my work. I was supposed to return to work in December 2022, but decided to stay at home in the end. I had health insurance through my employer and had a gallbladder removal surgery scheduled for December 22, 2022 so I called them and explained the situation asking if my surgery would still be covered since I was not going to be returning back to work and my leave was about to be up. The phone call was recorded and I was told regardless of the date I resigned I would have health insurance coverage until December 31, 2022.
December 21, 2022, the day before my surgery, I went into my office to clear out my desk and explain the situation to my supervisor. He asked me to email him my official resignation letter and to please participate in an exit interview that would be scheduled by HR.
A few months ago my medical coverage for this was denied and when asking my insurance about it they said my last day of coverage was the 21st and that my work would have to update that if it is incorrect. I told them that they told me I was covered when I asked about this specific scenario and they said we shouldn't have said that because your work sets your coverage. I asked for a recording of the conversation I had with them where they told me I would be covered and they are still working on providing this but I know that they said I was covered because I was planning to either wait until January or file a life changing event in order to get on my husbands insurance.
On the other side of things I called my work and asked HR if they could update my last day to the 24th which is the day I sent in my resignation letter (email) and they told me that they are sorry but I told them my last day was the 21st (I did not) and that there is nothing they can do.
I've read that verbal resignation is accepted in some workplaces but my manager said he would need a formal written email from me for my resignation which I sent on the 24th after the surgery. Is this something worth fighting for them to change or am I out of luck?
Also in regards to the case with my health insurance where they told me that in my exact situation I would be covered and now are backtracking saying that is not true is there anything I can do on this end either?
The total medical bills we are owing for the procedures come to $20,000 and this is really not something we can afford to just throw away over these small mistakes when we tried to do our best to make sure we would be covered as I would have waited until January when I would be covered on my husbands plan or filed a life changing event to add me a few days early.

2023.06.01 02:21 Grotesque_Gal What can i possibly do to avoid going broke AGAIN?

I quit my job last year in july due to sexual harrassment issues. After that, i couldn't find a job for 3 months and went through my entire savings trying to pay my bills alone (Im 20F, just recently moved out on my own, so no fancy money here.) I dont live an extravagant life, and about 95% of all my income went to bills.
my significant other moved in with me (splitting bills helped a ton) around the time I got a part time/seasonal job for 15/hr after about 3 and ½ months of searching and worked every hour i could possibly take, which was usually less than or around 20 a week. This alone did not pay my bills. i picked up gig work for walmart that let you choose your own hours and started out paying at about 20-25 and hour. It was absolutely fantastic that i could make nearly 150 within 4 hours during the few days i didnt work my part time. after my seasonal contract was up, i asked if they could give me more hours, and they admitted that they would have to give me LESS. maybe 13 a week or be on call. obviously this is not enough for me to pay my bills so i left and did gig work full time.
it was fantasticat first, i was making plenty of money and had so much time to enjoy life outside of work. but within a MONTH of working the gig job alone it dropped from 20-25 an hour to 10-15 IF.... you have a lucky day. the usual day has become 7-10/hr. I started applying to new jobs immediately. I sent in 50+ applications to jobs of all kinds from restaurants, stores, healthcare facilities, banks- anything and everything i could find (except for warehouse work because of my work experience in july that led me to quit). I have an excellent resume and experience in many fields with the will to learn more. Nothing, NO ONE would hire. and if i WAS lucky enough to even get an interview, when i asked about hours and pay it was usually 10-13 an hour, and only part time available. I cant live off of that, even with gig work on the side and the bills split 50/50.
Now, its been another 3 months without a formal job, constant applications and rejections, and really shitty rates at the gig job. My mental health has rapidly declined with all of this financial trouble on top of the fact that i recently lost family insurance and can no longer afford my medication. So im broke (less than 100 dollars to my name most days), severely unmedicated, unemployed, and absolutely struggling just to get up and live out day to day life. I know its only been a year of this struggle, but it has hit me so so hard. prices are sky rocketing, i had 3 meals a day for the first time in months yesterday and it almost made me cry because i felt genuinely privileged just to be able to eat that well. I know the threat of being homeless is off the table because my partner and my mom wouldn't let that happen to either of us, but my partner isnt exactly a dime maker himself. he makes significantly more than most people in our area and has a lot less bills, but since I've been out of work the bills are more 30/70 these days and its starting to hurt his bank too.
please, any and ALL advice is so extremely welcome. I've been trying to start a residential cleaning gig in my local area, but its been almost a month with little to no traction. I've had 2 jobs. one from my mother (my biggest fan lol) and one from a disabled couple who needed gardening done for only 10 an hour ( I'm taking everything i can get). I've tried selling my furniture to no avail, my musicsl instruments to no avail, I've advertised dog sitting and baby sitting and absolutely nothing is sticking. Im trying so hard to find something, anything to get me out of this rut but i can't find anything that pays well enough or a business that will accept me. help a broke girl out

2023.06.01 01:32 MoldyPineapple12 In Defense of Sherrod Brown - Part 6 - Tim Ryan vs Joe Biden + DeWine’s Coattails

In Defense of Sherrod Brown - Part 6 - Tim Ryan vs Joe Biden + DeWine’s Coattails
Hello angry observers. Welcome back to the sixth installment of my Sherrod Brown series! This one is again about Tim Ryan, particularly his turnout and margins compared to Biden’s 2020 performance in Ohio. The goal with this one is to help us analyze where Tim Ryan got what he needed and where he fell short. This will tell us where, and by how much, Sherrod Brown will need to improve on Tim’s numbers.
MAP 1: RYAN VS BIDEN AVERAGE TURNOUT
This is a county map showing the average turnout for each county between the 2022 midterms and the 2020 presidential election. Green counties had higher than average turnout in last year’s midterm compared to the 2020 presidential, relative to the rest of the state.
To make this map, I took each county’s ratio of votes between the two elections and shifted them over the state average, 30.33% lower turnout in 2022 vs 2020.
MARGINS:. . . 0-1% highelower than average. . . 1-2%. . . 2-3% . . . 3-4% . . . 4-6%. . . 6-8%. . . 8%+
Important county numbers:
Franklin (Col.): -2.47% (basically 2.47% lower than average in 2022 compared to 2020) —
Delaware (Col. sub.): +8.58% —
Hamilton (Cin.): +0.52% —
Warren (Cin. sub): +4.63% —
Cuyahoga (Clev.): -4.53% —
Lucas (Tole.): -4.15% —
Summit (Akr.): +1.39% —
Greene (Dayt.): -0.56% —
Mahoning (Youngs.): +2.34% —
If there’s any number you want for any particular county(s) for either map, lmk
Let’s break this one down.
The first thing you’ll notice is a decline in turnout in most of the cities, with Toledo, Columbus, and Cleveland being the main ones. Meanwhile, Cincinnati, the most historically conservative of the biggest cities in the state, and the Youngstown/Akron metro saw higher than average turnout compared to 2020.
The rural counties were a mixed bag. Some saw higher turnout, while others saw lower. Counties in the south and Appalachian regions are the fastest shrinking in population and are also the reddest on the map, yet this trend did not hold up for the comparably declining Northeast.
And, as expected, our fastest growing suburban counties are the darkest green: Union and Delaware north of Cbus, and Warren northeast of Cincy.
In an effort to see what 2020 turnout would have resulted in for the 2022 senate race, I averaged out each county’s numbers to what average turnout looked like in 2020. After the adjustment, JD Vance would’ve still won by 5.72%, down slightly from his actual margin of 6.11%. It would’ve shrunk his 252,000 vote margin of victory down by around 16,000 votes by my calculations, or .39% less, a drop in the bucket.
I even went through the effort of adjusting each county by 40% of its population growth/decline from census info from the last decade, and Vance would still win by 5.63%. In other words, this would be Ryan’s margin if he had 2020 Biden turnout in each county but if each county also had its projected 2024 population. The reason the margin stayed almost the same is because rural decline and the decline of rust belt cities canceled each other out, as did growth in red suburbs and blue Franklin county.
Turnout alone was not going to save Ryan’s campaign. Like many of you I’d imagine, these results surprised me, but I found two explanations for them.
First off, we’re shifting turnout onto another notoriously high rural turnout presidential election, 2020. Rural turnout wasn’t higher than average across the board this midterm because I compared it to 2020, instead of, say, 2018. While many rural counties would’ve netted less votes for Vance, the red ones on the map would have netted more after the adjustment. On the flipside, Urban turnout in the rust belt was decent in 2020, but not astounding. Yes, getting four percent higher turnout in Cleveland would’ve boosted Ryan some, but it was never going to save him, given my next reason.
Second, as you’ll see on the next map, Ryan hardly over performed Biden in the cities and suburbs, especially in the more ancestrally Republican ones. Quite frankly, he didn’t get his margins high enough in the biggest counties for averaged turnout to have boosted him as much as it otherwise would have.
MAP 2: RYAN VS BIDEN MARGINS
This one’s a straightforward map comparing Biden 2020 and Ryan 2022’s margins in each county. Blue counties are where Ryan got the better margin, Red where Biden did.
MARGINS: SAME AS LAST MAP
(0-1% better than the other. . . 1-2%. . . 2-3% . . . 3-4% . . . 4-6%. . . 6-8%. . . 8%+)
Important county numbers:
Franklin (Col.): Ryan +1.24% (Ryan did 1.24% better than Biden) —
Delaware (Col. sub.): Ryan +0.53% —
Hamilton (Cin.): Ryan -0.42% —
Warren (Cin. sub): Ryan +1.73% —
Cuyahoga (Clev.): Ryan +1.60% —
Lucas (Tole.): Ryan +2.79% —
Summit (Akr.): Ryan +3.66% —
Greene (Dayt.): Ryan -0.56% —
Mahoning (Youngs.): Ryan -1.57% —
Across the board, despite doing less than two points better than Biden statewide, Ryan did better than him in almost every county, with four exceptions.
The first is Allen Co. in the northwest. This one’s a rural guy and I don’t have any real explanation for it, so I'd consider it an outlier. The second and third are Hamilton and Montgomery, homes of Cincinnati and Dayton respectively. These cities used to be very red, (Obama won Hamilton by 6 in 2012 for context, Biden got it to safe). DeWine put up enormous numbers here, so much so that I strongly suspect it weighed down Ryan significantly. The whole southwestern region went for DeWine by a landslide and his performance must have caused the ancestral republicans here to default to the GOP and vote for Vance more than it did elsewhere.
The fourth is the notorious Mahoning, home of Youngstown and the poster child for Obama-voting WWC ancestral democrats leaving the party for Trump. I really don’t know what went wrong here. It’s obvious the place is going red, but Ryan underperforming Biden in what was his own house district? It wasn’t even a regional thing; all the counties around it are blue here. It’s kind of funny because this really is ‘muh trends’ on steroids, but I still don’t have a clue what happened specifically here.
On the flip side, Ryan did very well in most rural parts of the state, putting up solid numbers in places like Appalachia and the rural rust belt. He focused much of his campaign on appealing to these voters and it showed.
One thing this map is excellent at illustrating is why Ryan did so much better among rural Ohioans than suburban and urban voters, and that is DeWine. Ryan’s ability to get the numbers he needed somewhere rested with how much DeWine would be dragging him down. When DeWine got Assad margins among swayable suburban voters because of his moderate appeal, it dragged Ryan down. When DeWine got Franklin and Cuyahoga counties down to likely, it showed in the senate race when Ryan ended up with Biden margins.
However, my theory is that a moderate Republican governor doesn’t have the same level of influence on rural voters living in rural counties that are already deep red. Being moderate isn’t going to get rural Ohioans to like you any more than just being a Republican would. DeWine didn’t seem to have the same magnetic pull on the ticket in rural counties, which allowed Ryan to narrow the margins by campaigning as a hardworking moderate democrat who can relate to the common man. It’s easier to get higher numbers somewhere where DeWine is outrunning Trump by 10, instead of 25 or more.
The more urban the county, the more DeWine outran Trump and dragged Ryan down when independent voters defaulted to the GOP and went straight ticket. The more rural and anc. Dem the county was, the more Ryan was able to play wholesome moderate dude and pick up Obama-Trump voters and make new inroads elsewhere by being there and trying.
The interesting thing is, 2024 is going to be the opposite of the midterm scenario. Trump is the biggest drag on the ticket in the suburbs, while his base appeal does wonders for him in the rural parts of the state. Assuming suburban trends hold in any capacity, Brown will have to perform better than Ryan in suburbia, while an “America-first” ticket the GOP base is more excited for has the potential to pull him down more in rural Ohio.
MAP 3: How important it is Brown improves on Ryan’s margin
This is a purely opinion based map I made categorizing each county by how important it would be for Sherrod Brown to improve on the margin Tim Ryan got. This is not exactly how important each county is to victory, but more what Brown would want from each of them if he were to win. Essentially how much work needs to be done there, margin-wise.
Categories: . . .
Dark Green: If he just gets Ryan’s margins here, he’s golden. These are mainly counties where Brown didn’t do much better than Biden did two years later, so Ryan’s slight improvement on Joe is more than enough . . .
Light Green: If Brown gets Ryan’s margin, he’ll be fine. Ideally, he’d improve on them slightly. . .
Yellow: Ryan did decently here. Brown would hope to get a percent or two higher to win comfortably, but it’s not a necessity everywhere. . .
Light Orange: Brown should be doing somewhat better than Ryan here. Winning would become very difficult if he were to get Ryan margins in most of these. . .
Orange: He should plan on improving considerably here. Many of these are ancestral democratic counties that Brown has been able to put up good numbers in while Ryan fell short of what he needed. . .
Red: You’re finished with Ryan’s margins here during a presidential election year. It should be a lot easier for Brown in Cuyahoga and Franklin without DeWine on the ballot and he needs to hold his grip on unionized places like Trumbull. . .
Maroon: If you’re putting up Ryan numbers, just throw the fucking towel in. Brown should be winning Mahoning by likely, not losing it, he should not be underperforming Biden in Cincinnati, and getting 2020 Biden numbers in rapidly blue-shifting Delaware in 2024.
As you can see Ryan pretty much got what Brown will need in most of rural Ohio, particularly in the ancestrally Republican parts of the state. Brown should hope his incumbency makes up the remainder. There are some rural counties which Ryan did perform very well in, but I know Brown can (and should) do so much better in due to his incumbency. If Ryan did eight points better than Biden in a particular county, but Brown did better by thirty in 2018, he should try and narrow Ryan’s margins here even further. These counties are mainly near the WV border.
Another thing, from old maps, we know that Ryan nearly matched Brown's numbers in the Cincinnati and Columbus suburbs, but they are also about what Biden got in them. Since these areas are quickly blue shifting, Brown should be doing better than Ryan regardless. Getting 2020 Biden/2022 Ryan numbers would likely mean Brown underperforming Biden a good amount there, which is not something I have on my 2024 Bingo card.
And again, it’s Trump at the top of the ticket instead of DeWine. Even though it’s a presidential year, there should still be less of the top-of-the-ticket drag that Ryan had to put up with in the big counties. While Brown can’t come into ancestrally Republican suburbs with the mindset of “they voted for me before, I’ll make sure most of them do it again,” Ryan proved that getting voters to ticket-split and vote for a democratic senate candidate for the first time is still possible. Biden improving in the Cin/Day/Col region by another five or so points, and Brown doing even a point or two better than that would cut into the GOP candidate’s statewide total significantly.
These suburbs are where Brown has historically had the weakest incumbency bonus (anc. reps), but also where his recent gains made up for his other losses from 2012 to 2018. The result was him winning by about the same margin both times. He’ll want to repeat this strategy to pad his losses elsewhere. A suburban voter in Warren county hopping on the Brown train for the first time means you can afford to lose another follower in Youngstown.
