2023.06.07 11:49 BornAgainSpender How to get out of my comfort zone?
In a few weeks, I'll have a 4-month break where I will revisit past coursework to improve my academic situation. With no hobbies and physical constraints (illness) limiting exercise, I need a new pastime. I play videogames with a friend BUT that's not enough. I'm considering learning a foreign language, specifically Russian, to challenge my brain, and because I like the language. However, its complexity makes me anxious. Any advice? I feel too stressed, and again, as said before, I have health issues so I can't do any physical hobby.

2023.06.07 11:45 repulsims 37M California - looking for friends to voicechat, watch things and game with!
Ahoy there! It's been pretty lonely lately, so I figured I'd put myself out there and try to make some new friends. I'm of SouthEast Asian descent born and raised in Southern California. Definitely more of an indoor person, but I'm making an effort to go outside more and explore new places. Also a bit cringe so don't say I didn't warn ya!
I'm a huge fan of anime, science fiction, fantasy, documentaries, procedural crime shows, and series like Futurama, The Simpsons, Love Death Robots, and The Twilight Zone. I also enjoy playing a bunch of PC games (open world survival, fps, rpgs, fighting games, ect), so hit me up if you want to game together! I'm open to trying anything that looks fun.
Currently trying to improve all areas of my life and trying out new hobbies, listening to new music, watching new things. Mostly trying to get outside my comfort zone and do things I normally wouldn't. Feel free to send a message if you're up for a friendly chat/voicechat. What do you enjoy doing in your free time? What movies, foods, games, or songs are you really into? I look forward to getting to know ya!

I can't see people eyes I always fear they will judge my actions (even for my simple actions like walking , standing). I always forgot things if I'm not using it(for eg language, i forgot most the vocabulary & grammer). I don't why I'm like this, I fear of my future and always compare myself with others. Please I'm looking for some advice & confidence booster.

If there is Extraterrestial life that is intelligent life outside of our comfort zone, we have to make preparations, we need to ensure our safety.
I hope we start working together with harmony sooner rather then later, I feel like we are at a turning point here more then ever, just cant comprehend how the world will be in 2100

2023.06.07 11:28 halesluvsu02 worst airbnb experience.
when my husband and i were homeless, we had jobs and were able to afford nightly airbnb stays. We never had bad experiences before this stay but the host was a 30 year old young woman. we had a nice convo when i booked the stay, she told me to read her rules as i did and that was that. about an hour later she was bugging me, triple messaging me on when my eta would be and i told her i was almost done with work and my guest and i would be approaching soon. I quickly learned she was so adamant on learning when i’d be there because she had her own set of rules to tell me that were not mentioned on her original booking! she took us through her house showing us what we could use. the bathroom, and our room. She then explained we could not leave the house whatsoever and we were basically locked in. This felt very weird to me and her rules stated no smoking and i smoke dabs before bed to help me sleep and relax me from the soreness from work and i would normally do this in my car parked away from the house at other airbnb stays and that’s always never a problem as i am given a code to the front door. Well when i went outside i told her i was getting my medicine which was sorta true and she absolutely bugged the f out started yelling at me telling me she has work early in the morning and her dog is going crazy with me being outside. I start having a panic attack, im fighting with my fiancé about cancelling the stay getting a refund, and just sleeping in our car. She then sends me a message asking me if i want her to call the police?? (we were having a whisper fight and talking very quietly) so she had to have been listening to us talk as our door was closed. At this point i’m feeling done and feeling like we wasted money we didnt have and now we have to sleep in our car. We end up leaving, my husband tells her as we are leaving that she’s crazy and shouldn’t be an airbnb host if your house/dog isn’t prepared to have random guests. She left me a nasty review of both my husband and i, lied about almost everything that went down. Said my husband looked sketchy because at that time he was struggling with a skin picking condition and he felt more comfortable wearing a bandana worn like a mask to cover some of his blemishes up. It was such a horrible experience i will never do an airbnb stay in someone else’s home with them there ever again lol

2023.06.07 11:19 Acceptable_Amoeba_37 760(Q50,V44) - resources used and lessons learnt
I got a few questions on the resources I used, so I thought I would make a detailed writeup of the same.
Disclaimer: This is not a piece of general advice, I am just documenting some of the things that worked for me. There are many experts in this sub who are qualified to give out advice, I am most definitely not one of them. Take this post with a pinch of salt. What worked for me might not work for you.
Free resources in the end. TL;DR
- Quant - Wizako/ Gmat Club forum quiz
- Verbal - TTP(initial months)/ Gmat Ninja video series/ GMAT Club expert replies
- Have a guessing strategy and game plan for test anxiety, don’t lose control over the test at any point
- Don’t just think of what resources to use, think of when to use those resources as well. (Eg. doing gmat club practice in the initial stages felt overwhelming for me. I utilized it in a much more effective way after I was done with the basics)
- Be kind to yourself, get enough sleep, and fake it till you make it!
- Don't get disheartened if things don't go your way, a successful GMAT attempt depends on a lot of factors in addition to your prep. Your mindset and luck are factors as well. Keep going at it, it gets better!
Resources I used:
Quant: - Although I am comfortable with quant more than with verbal, my basics were a bit rusty. I used the GMAT Quant core course from Wizako. I used this course to brush up on the basics. Although I used this course many months back, I frequented my notes from this course throughout my prep. They have a Youtube channel, you can check it out to see whether their style suits you. https://gmat.wizako.com/gmat-online-course-gmat-online-coaching-classes.shtml?gclid=CjwKCAjwsvujBhAXEiwA_UXnAK7fJppKZeq-T782xPruwFdSaR6zFVmE5l0c5SboqYLq9XAJpaBdPBoCz-0QAvD_BwE#fees
- After getting my basics in place, I started practicing with official questions. For the next few weeks, my efforts were quite scattered. In retrospect, having a structured approach would have expedited my prep - more on this later
- I purchased the TTP 4 months plan, however, I could not properly utilize the course as I had a very busy couple of months at work. Based on my experience, it is a very comprehensive course. It can be a game changer if you know how to utilize it well. Many people here feel that it is too vast, but I feel that is in good measure. They start from the absolute basics, and it is a very well-made course. I utilized TTP majorly for Verbal as it was my major pain point, and I was very satisfied with it(more on this in the verbal section)
- Once my basics were in place I realized that it was not my accuracy but my poor time management that was the bigger problem. This was my major takeaway from my first official test from a quant perspective.
- I fixed my timing problem with practice, get comfortable with the discomfort. I practised using forum quiz, and GMAT Club tests. GMAT club tests are really good, you can utilize this resource to get your time management skills in place. I would still say that they are not the same as OG questions, so DON'T skip out on OG questions. Getting an understanding of what skills the GMAT tests was an eye-opener. I also got GMAT club tests for free for 4 weeks. I got 2 weeks free for filling up an error log survey and an additional 2 weeks free for signing up for MBA Spotlight within 48 hours of its announcement. Watch out for such promotions to get some free resources.
- After practising for a while, I could see myself getting better at time management. My next pain point was careless math mistakes, I made a TONNE of them. I downloaded my error log from GMAT club, and in the week before the test, I revisited every official question that I got wrong and checked if I still made the same mistakes. If I made those mistakes even after practice, I re-read those concepts. I was making such mistakes even in the days leading to the test, anxiety was the root cause for such mistakes. I spent the last few days before my test working on my test anxiety.
Verbal: - I spent the initial months of my prep doing a variety of resources, my prep was not structured at all. I used Powerscore CR Bible - a good resource to get some basics in place. I used Powerscore RC bible for RC, I found that to be helpful for me. I got comfortable with RC fairly quickly, so I did not spend much time on RC.
- GMAT Ninja Verbal series on Youtube is a godsend, I cannot stress how useful the entire series was, and the best part it is FREE. A lot of experts here say that GMAT verbal is not just about the rules, it seemed bizarre to me at first, but I understood what that meant after watching the GMAT Ninja videos. Watching those videos was a Eureka moment for me. I benefited a lot from the SC series especially. I felt that I could appreciate the videos better after I had some basics in place.
- I used TTP for verbal, especially for SC. TTP deserves every bit of credit it gets for making such a comprehensive course. Although I could not go through it completely, I greatly benefited from the verbal prep material. I referred to my SC notes from TTP multiple times during my prep journey. If you have the means and time to use TTP, go for it, but before that have a basic understanding of what your weak areas are. Use the free trial to get a feel of the course, and go for it when you are ready. Since the course is very vast, you might not have time to go through all of it, but having a clear idea of what you want in any resource will help you utilize it to the fullest.
- Read to understand the structure in RC, RC passages usually tire you out with a lot of details. Ensure that you don't lose track of the main idea, the structure, and what each paragraph tries to achieve in a structural sense. This helped me get most of the RC questions correct.
- SC is beyond the grammar rules. Don’t get me wrong, you need the rules to get to a basic level, but just that won't get you the right answer, especially in the more difficult questions. Reading for meaning is the way to go, GMAT Ninja videos helped me get this understanding. You have to be very literal with SC, I thought of SC like a puzzle.
- I am not the best person to comment about CR as that was my most difficult section, I tanked that in my first test. I learned that I did not keep track of the conclusion, so I fell for many trap answers. A few days before the test, Marty suggested I watch his Youtube video, it helped!! Thank you, Marty :) GMAT Ninja videos helped too. Like in SC, just understanding the patterns(eg. What are the typical right answers in a strengthen question?) will only get you so far, you need to understand what the main conclusion is and how the whole argument ties to it. Sometimes CR has seemingly bizarre correct answers, having a logical approach will help in such cases.
- GMAT CLUB - Just drilling OG questions will not be very effective. I used the forum quiz feature to practise in sets of 10-20 questions. I would later analyze each and every question, even the ones I got right. I used to read the expert replies and understand the concept. Once you get the hang of what qualifies as a right answer in GMAT, you will break your plateau, trust me on this.
- As mentioned earlier, I downloaded my GMAT club error log into an Excel file, revisited every official question that I got wrong, and checked if I still made the same mistakes. If I made those mistakes even after practice, and if it was because I did not completely understand that concept, I re-read those concepts(eg. I found the verb-ing modifier to be not intuitive for me, I re-read that a few times till I got the hang of it)
Test Anxiety: - I did not account for this in my first test, and I learned a very important lesson the hard way. Some people are naturally calm under pressure, I am not one of them. GMAT is an exam where the stakes are high, so naturally your nerves will also be at an all-time high. Look up tips to help with anxiety, and choose what works for you. I got a 700 in my last mock 5 days before the exam, it felt like there was no way out. Once again, I am truly grateful for the people in this sub, and my family and friends for helping me move past that very rough patch. In retrospect, I feel like I needed to face that 700 in the mock in order to get the score I got on the test day.
- Be kind to yourself, and don’t get discouraged if you feel like you are not performing to the best of your ability, or if you feel like you are taking too much time to get ready for the test. You might feel like everyone else around is making massive strides and you are progressing in baby steps, understand that no two journeys are the same. Give yourself credit for showing up and wanting to move forward even when things are not looking up.
- I had a positive attitude before the test to the extent that I was surprised at myself. I told myself that nothing would stop me from giving my best possible performance on the test day, in a way I faked it till I made it. Things did not go my way initially, I had a flat tire right before I left for the test, I did not understand the very first question, and I had to guess a few questions(luck played a part here), I was surprised how unfaced I was given the turn of events. Having a resilient mindset helps, believe in your practice. I made every effort to not think about the algorithm.
- Don’t let performance in your first section affect that of your next section. I made this mistake on my first attempt and consciously avoided making the mistake on the second attempt.
- Never lose control over the test - have a guessing strategy. If you feel you are running out of time, you will have to make some calculated sacrifices.
Miscellaneous things that worked for me: - In my first attempt, I had some trouble using the scratch pad, I followed a timing strategy wherein I write some time markers on the bottom of the page. It might sound trivial to you, but I had trouble with flipping the pages the right way on my first attempt, I was that anxious. I got a scratch pad to practise before the second attempt. If you can’t get it in your region, or if you find it to be expensive, you can get a makeshift one made at a local stationery store. I laminated a bunch of A4 sheets and got them spiral bound, not the best way, but it did the job.
- Reading some success stories here and on GMAT Club motivated me.
- I took a week off from work before my test, I completely zoned into GMAT. If you can't do this, consider having a few days around the weekend.
Free resources: Don’t be discouraged if you are on a bit of a money crunch, you can get a great score just by using free resources. I am happy to help more in this regard, feel free to DM.

- General practice(use this to pick OG questions based on difficulty levels) - https://gmatclub.com/forum/viewforumtags.php

- Watch out for promotions on GMAT club to get access to tests/forum quiz for a few days. Subscribing to the youtube channel gives you 1 week of access to the forum quiz.
- GMAT Club - search for any topic that you don’t understand, and look for expert replies on that topic, it will be more than enough to understand that concept.

2023.06.07 11:13 evilcarrier701 3 key steps for choosing the best interview attire
- Appropriate yet with comfort.
Prioritize comfort as that boosts your confidence. Even if you’re wearing a tie and button-down shirt, make sure your garments do not feel restrictive so that you can focus on the conversation at hand.
Dress one step up from what is worn at the workplace. If a company’s employees typically wear jeans and T-shirts, your one step up could be non-denim pants and a tucked-in shirt.
- Research the company’s dress code.
Along with dressing one step up, it would help if you got an idea of the company’s culture when it comes to dress code. You can do this via several means:
- Reaching out to the company’s point of contact to inquire about the company's dress code.
- Visiting the company’s site and social media profiles for images that offer insights about typical garment choices.
- Visiting the company in person to get a firsthand idea of what the employees wear.
Once you establish the accepted dress code, you can reference one of the below workplace examples for attire ideas:
In formal environments, appropriate attire may include a tailored suit, button-down shirt, tie, lace-up dress shoes, stockings/dress socks, and accessories, such as a wristwatch or a
No.1 Leather Briefcase.
In casual environments (start-ups), people tend to wear a broad range of garments, from khaki pants and jeans to hoodies and T-shirts. For the interview, you can choose something that’s more business casual rather than purely casual. This encompasses button-downs, non-denim pants, skirts/dresses that aren’t part of a business suit.
In creative environments (art/design), you are likely to come across a fashion-driven culture of dressing. In this case, you can go for something that corresponds to the latest trends and gels with the styles adopted by most of the employees.
- Dress appropriately for the interview location.
Interviewing on Zoom or on-site factors into the clothes you should select. you choose. For Zoom, prioritize colors that contrast with your background to help you stand out. At the same time, avoid colors that can clash. When arriving on-site for the interview, remember about your comfort. For example, air-conditioned spaces tend to feel on the cooler side after spending a while there, so keep these details in mind.
AVOID:
Flip-flops & athletic shoes
Heavy perfume or cologne
Piercings, excessive jewelry

2023.06.07 11:02 Dawaj1995 I’m tired of feeling like shit
After waking up for the thousandth time in the middle of the night on a work night, hungover with my heart pounding, I finally decided I’d had enough.
Dumped out my whole bar down the drain, and boxed up the rest of my bourbon collection, put it in my mom’s car (I’m gonna tell her to please drop it off to some nearby fam who I asked previously to take it/give to neighbors). I just want it out. I hope she can get rid of it today on her day off so when I come home from work it will be gone. I just could not stop drinking, with all those bottles of booze I bought over the years just sitting glaring at me. I spent over 3k on bourbon and fancy mixers over the past year or more, thinking that if I make “high end” drinks and sip bourbon in a glencairn maybe I will “learn to drink like a gentleman”. But I was still having the equivalent of like ~6 standard drinks every single night. Sometimes more sometimes less. I knew it wasn’t healthy. I knew I was slowly destroying my health. I am very overweight, and when I get drunk I always pig out on some unhealthy food or order some junk food on doordash with money I can’t afford to spend. I want to focus on my health, I need to. I am in bad shape and the booze made everything worse. I knew I couldn’t maintain this. I knew I would lose my job eventually. I also was worried if I keep doing this I will end up using drugs again. I was very bad. So I’m hoping this will do it. I will use this subreddit to help me on my journey. I think the next thing for me to give up is weed.
I needed to vent. I will try to find some meetings that don’t scare me away so I can build some kind of support system. I don’t have any friends right now which has a lot to due with me just isolating from everyone, and choosing to be alone all the time, in my comfort zone, and also a big one is just me being selfish and self-centered.
Thanks to everyone who shows support on this sub. Sorry that this post is a bit messy. It’s hard for me to say I’m done forever but I think that would be best for me. I’m going to take it one day at a time, and hopefully I can get over these anxiety and panic attacks and regain the joy in my life, living sober.

2023.06.07 10:43 markymarc_99 Intense sweating while trail running, possible cons?
I've been training for some years now and I can say that I'm a decent mid distance mountain runner, anything under 30km is within my comfort zone. Recently I'm getting more attracted towards longer distances and it has become my dream to race the local Ultra in the future (Ultra Pirineu).
What has me worried about trying longer distance isn't the usual knee or leg pain, but the intense sweating I have: every time I run I end up like if I had a shower, I probably loose more than 1 liter of fluid even if the run is not high intensity. When I started training I thought: the fitter I am, the less I will sweat, but apparently that's not the case at all, I feel like I sweat more now than when I've started training.
Heavy sweating causes mineral and electrolite loss: sodium, potassium, magnesium... I've never had bad dehydration problems or cramps while running, but I also always make sure to carry water and drink maybe more than average runners. I have never taken any supplements, gels, or salt caps.
Do you think this physiological aspect will be a drawback for running long/ultra distance? Will I have to carry more water than usual and take supplements?

2023.06.07 10:32 dybkkvf I don’t know what I am
I’m 21 year old female. I started to think that maybe I am bisexual a couple years ago, but I’m never sure about anything without a proof! I don’t have any experience of dating or even having a crush. This is not just with women. I’ve never had any romantic experience with anyone in my entire life. The idea of dating someone (regardless of gender) seems nice and I fantasize about it sometimes, but it’s just a fantasy. Am I really capable of being attracted to someone? Maybe I haven’t met the right person, or maybe I’m just too shy because even being friends is difficult for me. But I want a proof of my identity! So, I put myself on a dating app, force myself out of my comfort zone. I realized that I’m more aesthetically attracted to women than men, but I don’t know if it’s because I like them or I just want to look like them. I talked to some people on the app and actually went on a date with a woman twice! I think it went well and we both had fun! We went to a cafe and a beach and talked about ourselves. But I don’t feel any different from just taking to my friends. I don’t know how to move forward from here. Now, I’m not sure if we should keep seeing each other or I’m just wasting her time. Can someone just tell what I am and what I should do?

2023.06.07 10:20 CodeSlayer_69 Putting too much pressure because of fear
Hello guys!
So basically I am 29 and I started learning coding about 4 months ago in SoftUni(Bulgaria). It's around 2 year program from 0 to Full Stack that I found really good. We have facebook group, schedule, 3 times a week 3 hours live classes with Q&A during it, exercises, homework, exams, mentor help, facebook group and tons of good things. The program is built for people who work and want to enter it steady.
And here comes my problem. I want it fast. I worked last few years mainly logistic work, driving reachtrucks, forklifts and warehouse jobs that I hated every single one of them. I was feeling I can do much more and actually I really can. I feel I am understanding very well the programming, the topics and since I was a child I love logic. Just my path took me to work for safety and never risk. I always had desire for growth, personal, spiritual, intellectual. I always was feeling those type of production jobs I was working for toxic. If e ever met a person that I liked in those jobs, well that person was there temporarily, because he was probably smart and knew this is to sustain his goals. But not me!
I was driven by fear and I kept working those type of jobs, while being abroad in another country, while I even did not make research or something what I have in the area. Even I was not on some stable contract, just working as temp worker for agencies. Every single one of those jobs I nailed, get really good and then get really bored. I tried coding while I was working since 2020 but I always gave up.
Well, April this year, after I finish my shift at the warehouse, I got informed that I will be laid off. That was after I was wondering for 2 months should I quit or not, when I wanted to quit with all my heart. And that was blessing!
I started immediately to code more( I was already in 2 months introcutiry course with C Sharp) and I nailed the exam with 600 out of 600 points, so I entered the full program. Now I am halfway trough the Fundamentals course. So far I learned : statements(if-else if , switch ) , loops, data types, methods, some particle understing of arrays(which i don't push myself) and I feel like i really like this thing. I bough myself a good MacBook Pro with half of my savings, because my old laptop was shit and I have support from my girlfriend and family.
But I keep pushing myself too much, to the point I start feeling stress that I am not doing good enough, i must code every free minute BECAUSE OF FEAR! Fear not ending up again in those type of jobs i worked last 6 years! I am working part time delivery guy right now, so I can code a bit more, but I feel I must find a full time job, even though I can make it normal with part time job, since I can cover all my needs.
But no no, I must be really good! I must be ahead of most of my classmates! I kind of like that mentality, but also sometimes I feel it takes from my enjoyment of life. My goal is to find a job, that will allow me to live comfortably , have decent salary and enjoy my life. I don't want to build something that will change the world or be super competitive and give all my life to coding. Just to find a job, that is challenging, well paid, that I feel proud that I have profession.
I believe in myself and I am 100% sure that I will do it. The thing is, I don't want to burn myself out and I don't want to stress myself too much. What are some realistic tips and advices that you can give me. I think i am a bit affected by all this hustle culture and sleep is for the weak. Part of me is truly believing this is true. I felt like I wasted my last 10 years and now i want to over compensate, but I feel that i am getting a bit burned out, from the high goals and standards I put myself in.
And that stress is mainly coming that I don't have right now stable income, and I feel a full-time job will slow me down a lot in terms of learning to code. I feel really fucked up in my head those days and any solid advice will be of help. No sweet talks, harsh truth is always welcome. If you read all this, thank you for having interest in my story!
