2023.05.30 22:05 firewall245 The biggest problem hurting the LCS as a business isn't franchising, its there's no reason to be a fan of any team.

TLDR: Teams only business expansion strategy was to field a team that wins internationally to get international fans, but when your teams don't do well internationally that strategy is terrible.
Teams should have instead found ways to expand within NA via hosting events and watch parties in various cities, or making the college scene easier to understand

All of the points that people say "kill the LCS", are actually not reasons that kill the LCS, it's totally possible to have a well working league with said problems present.
  1. Every sports league in the US is franchised and has no problems. LPL is franchised and has no problems. LCK is franchised and has no problems
  2. Players from other regions coming in (on its own) is not a killer problem. Some massive stars in the NBA are from other countries, and you don't see people saying the NBA is dead. LPL has always had many players from Korea, and its still wildly popular.
  3. Shitty international performances (on its own) is not a killer problem. CBLoL was like the worst region for 4 years straight is one of the biggest leagues
The biggest problem I've seen, and one that lies solely with the business owners, is that they have provided no reason to be fans of their team, and by extension provided no reason to watch LCS as a whole.
Suppose I want to get new fans for my team and grow my business, I can either
  1. Steal fans from another team
  2. Get new fans who don't watch the league to watch it. These people could be
    1. People who watch League but not LCS
    2. New watches of League entirely
The LCS teams business strategy for the past few years has been pretty clear
  1. Get a team you think will do very good
  2. Do good in LCS to get fans from other teams to bandwagon
  3. Do good at worlds to get fans from other regions to watch
But what happens if your team doesn't do good in the LCS? Well then domestic bandwagoners won't watch you. What happens if you don't do well at worlds? Well then teams from other regions won't watch you. Now you have also invested in players that have no purpose than to win, so if you don't win why would anyone care about your team (ie SwordArt). People have no problem with players from other regions if they add something (Bjerg, Huhi, Santorin, etc) but if said player has no draw and loses then people are going to be annoyed you didn't just pick some college kid and give them a chance.
For an international viewer, NA is such a unique timezone that there is no point to watch unless its your home region. I love LPL games but I can't bring myself to get up at that time, why would someone in China watch LCS?
TSM dominated the league for so long that they gained a lot of fans and once they started losing and dumped their fan favorite players people stopped watching them. TSM has one strategy for growing their business and now since that isn't working they're moving out of LCS thinking it'll fix their issues. TSM leaving is a big brand, but they are a shitty run business and IMO its good for the league

How do you make people in NA care about your team?

Clearly NA isn't gaining international viewers anytime soon, so teams need to try finding ways to expand to players within NA, and (in my eyes) people who don't play league. Riot has already done a lot to expand League into the lives of people who don't play (KDA, Arcane, etc) teams need to capitalize on that.
Host events in bars and watch parties so that new people can see them. Literally just give a bar $50 to play the games on 1 TV and ask some college kid to watch there and explain the game to new people. Give teams city or region tags even if they don't play there to get people invested.
I'm hella biased but at least GGS has shown their expansion strategy is building teams off moneyball and trying to draw Warriors fans into League rather than just the dumb "win and get fan" strat.
Player development in the college scene could also be such an easy draw, which would then get people invested in players, but the college scene is so fucking confusing its impossible to keep up. People will literally cheer for their college even if they have no idea whats going on because they have the school pride.

Market Recap - 5/20/23 - everything is over bought
The Fed
Fed's Barkin: There is more willingness among businesses to try to increase prices, and that will continue until demand falls. FED policy is in restrictive territory, but there is uncertainty around where rates need to go.
Core PCE is not moving fast enough. I feel a July hike is very much on the table now (still think June would be a pause).

Holiday travel spending remains strong. The U.S. screened nearly 9.8 million airline passengers over the four-day holiday weekend, surpassing pre-COVID 2019 levels by 300,000, according to the Transportation Security Administration (TSA).
On the international front, Eurozone M2 growth lowest in history. They are heading toward deflation.

As I mentioned a while back, the Federal Reserve has been tightening its balance sheet for a while, while the European Union has just started the quantitative tightening (QT) process. Euro area money supply (M1) dropped 5.2%, reaching a historic low. If the decline continues (which it probably will), the EU zone will enter a recession in the second half of 2023 (Germany is technically already in a recession).

The Economy
May's Dallas Fed Manufacturing index fell to -29.1, worse than the estimated -18 and the previous month's -23.4. Notably, new orders, shipments, delivery times, and outlook all declined further, indicating a deeper contraction. Both production and capital expenditures shifted from expansion to contraction. However, like the results shown in other regional surveys, employment experienced a slight increase.

Conference Board consumer confidence declined slightly in May. “Consumer confidence declined in May as consumers’ view of current conditions became somewhat less upbeat while their expectations remained gloomy,” said Ataman Ozyildirim, Senior Director, Economics at The Conference Board. “Their assessment of current employment conditions saw the most significant deterioration, with the proportion of consumers reporting jobs are ‘plentiful’ falling 4 ppts from 47.5 percent in April to 43.5 percent in May.

It's encouraging to see that most coincident economic indicators are holding up well and not signaling an impending recession. However, there are concerns regarding the retail and production sectors, as they have shown some weaknesses.

JPM estimates restarting student loan payments could "lower consumer spending by the equivalent of about 0.1% of GDP... likely wouldn't be a game-changer for the fate of the expansion..."
The Business
RBC is the latest to lift year-end target: “.. we are lifting our YE 2023 S&P 500 price target from 4,100 to 4,250 [and] lifting our 2023 S&P 500 EPS forecast to $213 from $200 .. the case against US equities relative to non-US equities has been overstated .. and think Small Caps are at an attractive entry point ..”
A great summary of the impact of US government spending on stock/bond performance. Stock tends to perform better when Uncle Sam is out shopping. Bonds tend to be under press as the spending was made on borrowed money.
The rally that followed the re-opening of China's economy has come to an abrupt halt, and certain indices are now nearing bear-market territory.

I have mentioned many times that large growth stocks have had a tremendous year so far, while small and mid-cap stocks have significantly underperformed due to economic uncertainty. However, if the uncertainty begins to settle in the second half of the year, small and mid-cap valuations will become very attractive compared to large growth names.

Many believe that semis are no longer cyclical because everything now requires chips, leading to a constant supply shortage. However, this chart suggests otherwise. If the PMI resumes its decline later this year (if indeed we are heading into a recession), semiconductor stocks will likely face demand shocks.

This is the first time I've seen someone quantify the correlation between forward equity returns and sentiment. Just not sure how strong the correlation is (probably not very strong). So may not be useful, but interesting none the less.

2023.05.30 21:47 Hollow760 I went out running on the streets of Delhi in a sports bra. Never again.

Literally every uncle, aunty, and kid on the road was staring at me with their mouths agape. I am not exaggerating when I say that I saw 80-90 people literally stop and turn around to watch me. Their judgemental eyes left a crawling sensation on my skin.
Isn't Delhi supposed to be the capital of this "superpower"? Isn't Delhi supposed to be a "metropolitan" city? Is this what us Indians can do the best, seriously?
I'm seriously considering emigrating just based off this one incident. Because the street is different- it's all strangers. What hurt the most is when I got home after everyone woke up.
My wife starting crying when I walked into the house. My own kids froze still in terror. My grandmother had a heart attack and collapsed on the floor. May her soul rest in peace.
India is not a safe place for balding middle-aged men to go out running in a sports bra and booty shorts.

2023.05.30 21:44 autotldr ‘Dictatorship’: Protesting Indian wrestlers charged with rioting Sexual Assault News

This is the best tl;dr I could make, original reduced by 79%. (I'm a bot)
Several top Indian wrestlers, including Olympic medallists Sakshi Malik and Bajrang Punia, have been charged with rioting and disorder by police in New Delhi after their arrests during a march to the new parliament building following its inauguration by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Police released some of the protesters late on Sunday but filed first information reports, or formal complaints, against others under multiple articles of the Indian Penal Code, ranging from rioting to "Causing an obstruction in the duty of a public servant with the use of assault and criminal force".
The wrestlers have been protesting in the capital for more than a month over the lack of action against Brijbhushan Sharan Singh, a member of parliament belonging to Modi's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party.
Malik, who has been at the forefront of the protests, questioned the police's swift action to detain those who were protesting "Peacefully".
Security in the capital was tightened ahead of the parliament's inauguration, and personnel also stood guard on the outskirts of Delhi as a group of farmers tried to enter the city to support the protesting wrestlers.
The protesting wrestlers have refused to share the names of the women who have complained and will not let them come forward.

Endgame Part 2: These can't be mere cohencidences. Icahn see big positive news in the coming few days.
In my previous post I presented some DD on why it is in the business interest of any entity or group taking over BB&B as part of Chapter 11 reorganization to let ownership in the successor entity be shared amongst pre-petition shareholders and creditors by letting them own stock, so that, per IRC §382(l)(5), they are allowed to carry-over the Federal Net Operating Loss and Federal Tax Credits and thereby save billions in tax liability going forward. I also explained my thesis in the post about why I believe our potential white knights RC, Icahn are executing a strategy of Buy Buy Baby spinoff along with a takeover of the company by a majority (>50% stake) shareholder or a group of affiliated shareholders, who own majority stake after conversion of outstanding bond debt into equity or alternatively, conversion of bond debt into a combination of secured and convertible notes. I now have more circumstantial evidence of Icahn possibly holding BBBYQ bonds and mounting a takeover strategy via conversion of outstanding bond debt into equity, from the background of lawyers representing the Official Committee of Unsecured Creditors, to accommodate whom the hearing date was adjourned from May 16 to May 31. I explain this in the following paragraphs. Also, Schedule 1 starting on page 5 of CH11 court docket 456: NOTICE OF LEASE AUCTION AND POTENTIAL LEASE SALE HEARING does not include any distribution center in the list of locations whose lease is up for auction and potential sale, which supports the thesis that I discussed in my previous post that potential buyers are interested in acquiring BBBYQ assets to develop into an Amazon competitor where existing contracts with Ryder Integrated Logistics for running the distribution centers that were signed before inflation ramped up are considered important assets. Also, CNBC is now going to air a documentary on Ryan Cohen on June 6 (1 day before the June 7 auction date), where Larry Cheng's CNBC interview conducted in Volition Capital's office back on Feb 7 (1 day after the equity funding deal with HBC) will likely feature. So, I can definitely see things ramping up from M&A perspective in the coming few days, considering the court hearing tomorrow (the hearing for just one of the motions was postponed to June 6, rest are still on for tomorrow, per the agenda filed in the docket just now) and the stalking horse deadline, the day after.
As can be seen in the screenshot below, per the latest update to the motion related to Procedures For Transfers Of Common Stock And Preferred Stock, filed yesterday in docket 490, proposed counsel to the Official Committee of Unsecured Creditors were added to the notification service list for "Declaration of Status as a Substantial Shareholder". In the following paragraphs I show how the lawyers Robert J. Feinstein, Robert K. Malone, Brett S. Theisen, who are in the attention list per the above procedures and another lawyer Beth E Levine, also representing the Official Committee of Unsecured Creditors for whom an application for court appearance was recently filed have past experience litigating cases where Carl Icahn was involved and they likely represented his interest for those cases.

Docket 490: Changes In Procedures For Transfers Of Common Stock And Preferred Stock
Below are snippets from Robert J. Feinstein's and Beth E Levine's PSJZLAW profiles, which state that they were involved in Dana Corporation's Chapter 11 case, where Carl Icahn had built up a large debt stake (likely via bonds acquisition) as reported by WSJ and Law360 and where negotiations with the Official Committee of Unsecured Creditors (which would include bondholders) were instrumental for a successful reorganization plan, as reported by Jones Day.

Robert J. Feinstein CH11 experience For Dana Corp

Beth E. Levine CH11 Experience For Dana Corp
Below is a snippet from Robert K. Malone's Gibbons P.C. Profile, which shows that he had represented Creditors at TWA and from his LinkedIn Profile it appears that he did this while working for Gibbons P.C. between 1986-88 when Carl Icahn was running TWA and he also took TWA private during that time by taking on additional debt from Creditors.
Robert K. Malone's TWA experience
Below is a snippet from Brett S. Theisen's Gibbon's P.C. profile, which shows that he represented the official committee of unsecured creditors (which included bondholders) for the CH11 reorganization for Trump Entertainment Resorts, where although Icahn lost the takeover bid, but collected $125 million of the $225 million bondholders put up to finance the bankruptcy emergence.

Brett S. Theisen's Trump Entertainment Resorts CH11 experience
TL/DR:
  1. 4 lawyers representing the Official Committee of Unsecured Creditors have likely represented Carl Icahn's interests in past CH11 reorganization and Creditor financing.
  4. So, I can see big potential M&A related news in the coming days, possibly with Icahn's bond debt stake and maybe even shareholder stake being revealed, considering the court hearing tomorrow and either he or RC may possibly revealed as the stalking horse bidder after (the company has 2 business days to reveal the stalking horse bidder via stalking horse notice filing, after an agreement is reached) the stalking horse deadline, the day after.

2023.05.30 20:37 raisondecalcul Incoming: Unemployed middle managers will form a new, horrible political movement

This thread got me thinking... we are about to see a huge influx of a new kind of unemployed: unemployed, unemployable managers. We are about to see greatest meltdown of unemployed middle management in history, and it's not going to be pretty, it's potentially going to be 20-40 years of political problems, boomers all over again.
Maybe we're already seeing this with all the semi-psychotic alt-right rage-bros. But the wave I'm talking about is the result of ChatGPT and the general collapse of the old economy. ChatGPT can do planning, task assignment, business management, accounting--it makes it much easier to work for yourself and start your own business. The number of self-employed freelancers is about to skyrocket, decimating the management class.
We are going to see a new kind of bougie demand for handouts and the creation of useless jobs managers would like to have (such as government administrative jobs). Hopefully this will coincide with demand for better public welfare, but I think we can be cynical here and predict that it will not. The ex-manager polity will demand free handouts that can only be received by people who were already wealthy or leaving management jobs. In a way, this is a democratization of "too big to fail" to the upper-middle class (but all this does is deepen the financial serfdom of everyone else).
We will see a new discourse around these poor, forgotten middle-managers spring up. News articles will be written about how nobody is hiring managers anymore, "nobody wants to be managed", poor middle manager lost his home that he agreed to be in debt peonage to for 30+ years because he couldn't find another job as a middle manager, poor middle manager is confused about why his skills are no longer marketable. (It will be a primarily male, reactionary movement.)
As minimum wage (or market wages) and all the paperwork associated with running a business or being part of a company increases, it is increasingly the fact that only the most exploitative businesses can exist. Mere profit is not enough--in the environment of inflation + currency scarcity + massive red tape, only hyperprofits allow a business to remain in existence. Why does it cost half a million dollars to make even the simplest app? Why, because every single person associated with the project needs to be paid $200/hour--$120/hour for their salary and the rest for taxes and hiring expenses. Why are Hollywood movies so expensive and so stereotyped? Hmmm, maybe it has something to do with the fact that the credits for an average movie now contain tens of thousands of names, and each of those persons is being compensated with a comfortable middle-class paycheck?
I think everyone should live comfortably / be paid well, but I don't think we can ignore the receding boundaries of the blessed circle of capital, or the Capitol we could call it. Capitol companies are those that can offer a stable job, a living wage, even a career. Everything else--Uber, gigs, selling used things on eBay, doing local jobs under-the-table--is something that the mainstream economy and bougie people consider underpaid work that, if we examined it, would be deemed illegal by their standards.
Corporations are increasingly pay-me cartels, groups of people whose first job is the discursive production of their own class and the necessity that they remain at that class. How can an employee of a company possibly function without a comfortable income that allows them to rent an incredibly overpriced apartment in the city? The fact that this argument is presented in the terms, "How can we pay the bare minimum to allow our employees to function physically?", is now so normalized that employees advocate for themselves this way: Their class is justified in the terms of capital itself. They don't have a job unless, first of all, they produce this discourse together, mutually reinforcing and supporting each other's bid for class-production.
This class-production discourse is failing, about to fail, for the managerial class, because of advances in AI. I don't hear any individual concept artists complaining about being replaced by AI--I just hear companies complaining about copyright. However, I do think we are going to hear the managers complaining, because they were in a cushy position of getting to boss others around and get paid for it, and now those jobs are going to be disappearing faster than other jobs.

2023.05.30 20:35 Sure_Science_7161 With the Reopening of the Carousel, the New York State Museum May Once More Go Around in Circles

After a relaxing European vacation with one of his employees, Mark Schaming, director of the New York State Museum, is back and ready to get to work. All who know the man will tell you that he's displayed new energy and ambition after Chris Churchill of the Times Union insinuated that he is unfit in his job as director of the New York State Museum. As Mr. Churchill writes:
The full-sized carousel, up on the fourth floor, has been closed for maintenance for years. The museum's famous subway car is also off-limits, with a sign telling visitors it's closed for repairs. Discovery Place, the building's hands-on learning center for young kids, is also closed.
Those aren't the only disappointments. The State Museum no longer offers a restaurant or any sort of fresh food, forcing visitors to line up at vending machines to quell their grumbling tummies. Some escalators and elevators are out of service. The museum, on the whole, feels forgotten.
From the imposing stone edifice of the Cultural Education Center, Mr. Schaming is cognizant of the cries of the people. This reporter can confirm from a recent visit that Discovery Place has reopened after only three years of closure. JP O'Hare, a spokesperson for the State Museum, explained the long closure, saying that "the pandemic forced us to rethink touchable exhibits."
Visitors to the newly reopened Discovery Place will see that the State Museum has taken to heart rethinking touching exhibits, as it is clear the room has been largely untouched after years of "rethinking" and "renovation." From a cursory glance, it seems to me that the only changes are the removal of all books, toys, puzzles, handouts, and staff.
Now, as a scattering of sources indicate, the New York State Museum approaches its pièce de résistance, the reopening of its carousel which has been closed since 2019. After much digging, it appears the cause of the closure was some minor damage the carousel experienced when it violently (and potentially lethally?) exploded during regular operation. Thinking it unsafe to have metal suspension beams swinging about and shrapnel flying as children rode the carousel, a repair effort was initiated.
The century-old artifact was ridden into the ground (or, technically, helicoptered into the air) once due to poor operating conditions, but the people of Albany ought feel confident that mistakes were learned from. Previously the carousel was operated nearly constantly and without proper care in place to keep the artifact balanced. Although unconfirmed, word is that now the carousel will be operated nearly constantly and without proper care in place to keep the artifact balanced. It is said that insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results, but I call going in circles a carousel.
Fortunately for the carousel, it looks like staffing constraints will interfere with the planned constant operation of the carousel. This is being swiftly addressed by Mr. Schaming, though not by hiring new staff. Rather, as at least one source indicated, Mr. Schaming is currently interested in changing the job descriptions of people in different departments to include carousel operation.
It may seem strange that Mr. Schaming is reticent to staff his museum, but the reader must understand the important considerations behind these decisions. One must first be aware that in 2015 the New York State Museum received $14 million in funds for a massive three to four year renovation. As Paul Grondahl of the Times Union wrote in 2015:
The State Museum will undergo a $14 million renovation that will dramatically re-imagine the exhibits with dynamic technology, interactive displays and a fresh form of narrative storytelling.
When the work is finished in three to four years, it will represent the largest upgrade to the capital city's most popular tourist attraction since it opened in 1976 at the newly built Empire State Plaza.
The expected completion date is in the rear view mirror, and it's now common knowledge that the $14 million gas tank is mostly fumes. Although it has been difficult to unravel exact information, best evidence suggests that currently the State Museum has $5 million still in the pocket. It's time for tightening the belt, and part of that looks to be staffing cuts.
One may be concerned that Mark Schaming, director of the New York State Museum, is having difficulty performing his job. Fortunately the director of the New York State Museum is overseen by the Deputy Commissioner of Cultural Education, who is also Mark Schaming.
One may then be concerned that Mark Schaming, director of the New York State Museum and Deputy Comissioner of Cultural Education, is having difficulty performing his two jobs. Fortunately the director of the New York State Museum who is also the Deputy Commissioner of Cultural Education is overseen by Sharon Cates-Williams. Ms. Williams, who herself holds the two jobs of Deputy Commissioner of Performance Improvement & Management Services (PIMS) and Executive Deputy Commissioner, stated to Mr. Churchill on the matter:
I think he's doing a good job wearing two hats. It does not interfere with the core mission of the museum, and it's a decision that we stand by.
One may then be concerned that Sharon Cates-Williams, herself wearing two hats and self-supervising, may have some biases. Fortunately the Deputy Commissioner of PIMS who is also the Executive Deputy Commissioner reports to Betty A. Rosa, the Commissioner of Education.
Dr. Rosa has served as Commissioner of Education since 2021 when she, as Chancellor of the Board of Regents, elected herself Commissioner of Education. Unlike others, she gave up her former position as Chancellor of the Board of Regents upon her self-election. It is unclear how she feels about others who do not likewise content themselves with wearing only one hat.
Perhaps we soon will have an opportunity to ask Dr. Rosa. Although details are sparse, it has been indicated that Mr. Schaming is planning a victory celebration for managing to successfully reopen the carousel after four years. Specifics on the event and even the exact date have been infuriatingly kept under wraps, but it is speculated that Mark Schaming and Betty A. Rosa plan to celebrate this monumental occasion by giving speeches and riding on the carousel with elementary school students.
We can safely say that the sun is rising on the New York State Museum. After only four years the State Museum has managed to successfully "renovate" Discovery Place through the power of downsizing and is on the cusp of reopening the carousel under the same conditions which led to its prior destruction. With only $5 million remaining in the pocket and only running about five years behind schedule on a grand renovation, who knows what wonders we can expect in the years to come.

Hello all, given the fact one of most common posts we seem to get on the subreddit is tips/advice for coming to Nats Park either from Visiting Fans or First Times. I thought it would be a good idea to get a decent size run-down of all the things new and "old" this season at Nats Park and the surrounding area to help ensure a good experience by all (If I forgot something please comment, my brain can only hold so much Nats Park knowledge).

60 Lux Condos Back in Conversation in North Deering
Hey all, some may recall a thread from last year about a $25M project along the Presumpscot trail in North Deering. I had kind of forgotten about it, but this is still very much in play. There is a community meeting scheduled for tomorrow at Lyman at 5:00pm. If you’re a north deering resident and/or use the Presumpscot trail system, please consider attending the meeting.
I’m against this project because it’s bulldozing 14 acres of forest along the river trail for 60(!) condos which will be $500k-$700k each. Just rich people cutting down trees to get richer and does very little to address any housing crisis issues.

2023.05.30 20:02 everythingsummarized 22 [F4R] Virginia/Anywhere - Looking for whatever the universe throws my way :)

22f, appalachian, leo, 5'10, working in the nonprofit sector.
i'm mostly looking for organic connections with people that share similar interests, hobbies, or lifestyles. i graduated from college in 2021, and it's been fun figuring out life! i'm just a mountain girlie living in a city for work. i'm a big fan of traveling, which was put on a brief hiatus during covid, so i'm excited to get back out there. i'm an introvert at heart, but i love making meaningful connections with the people around me. i'm a little loud, a little opinionated, but funny enough to make up for it.
i have three degrees that i'm really proud of! i'm super open minded and curious about the world.
things i love: my little dogs, my hamsters, discovery+, baking, wrestling, dinosaurs, tattoos, thrifting, dolly parton, impractical jokers, traveling, 90 day fiance, interior decorating, sims, animal jam classic, detective joe kenda, birdwatching, gardening, anyone that has taken the time to educate themselves on social/political/economic issues.
things i don't love: illogical arguments, the american political landscape, capitalism.
ideal future: homesteading in the mountains with a silly little garden, chickens, and a great place to drink coffee. tell me what a dream life looks for you?? 20+
