2023.06.03 22:27 Insignities Omaha, NE - Looking for a musician/artist to collaborate with

Hi, I’m Juan (22M). I live in Omaha, NE, and am looking for a musician/artist to create Original Music with. I play/create on guitar & piano - but am open to learning any instrument. I aim to develop a writing-relationship where we can produce fleshed-out art (music being the primary form). My influences include MBV, Beach House, Smashing Pumpkins, Nirvana, Slowdive, Sonic Youth, The Cure, Alice in Chains, Radiohead, Bauhaus, Siouxsie & The Banshees, Joy Division/New Order, & Deftones.
I am open to travel, of course within reason. No skill or virtuosity required. All I do ask for is commitment to completion of our art and the openness to communicate any and all ideas. I prefer In-Person interactions to Online/Remote, yet I recognize the analog barriers to entry so I am open to Online.
If you are interested, please message me on Discord (insignities#9594) with your Name, Age, & Primary Mode of Interaction. Discord is my favorite comms platform, but if you do not have it, you can hit me up here or my email “[email protected]

2023.06.03 22:14 Rosie_654 Looking for legal advice on my business suite rental

This is my fist time ever posting on Reddit, so I hope I am doing this all right.
Let me quickly explain my issue. I am an esthetician in Texas. I am a sole prop business. I moved into a single room suite about 2 years ago (signed a 3 year lease for a lower rent) and instantly realized the noise level from the neighbor was going to be a problem. Next to me is a music teacher that offers piano and vocal lessons to children. This isn’t always a huge deal, but it has definitely interferes with some of my more relaxing services, which has put a damper on my business. Luckily, I have very loving and supportive and understanding clients, but it is still an issue.
There have been other issues, a big one was I didn’t have any air flow to my room for most of the VERY hot summer and it took months so them to fix it (and by them I mean me getting a hold of the AC guy). Other stuff included basically includes me b*tching about small stuff, lock to the outside door being broke, children running and screaming up and down the halls, etc.
I have been asking to be moved to a new room for some time now, even if it meant paying more, to not deal with the noise.
Finally I was offered a new room at the same rate.
This is where things blew up - I asked to repaint (per my lease, this should be totally fine) and was told I needed to pay an additional security deposit to do so. I argued back. I am now getting emails from the owner of the building telling me :
“I am hearing about a pattern of discontent and criticism coming from you about our building and even to and about our personnel. Some of the other tenants are reporting concerns that appear to be raised in their minds from discussions they have with you.”
And
“At this point, your decision to stay or leave is up to you. If you decide to stay, however, I will need to see an immediate end to the ongoing criticism that I’m hearing about.”
I can explain this more, but this is already a very long post.
My question is, do I have any right rights to my situation - being the noise levels from the studio next door that are interrupting my business?
I am normally one that backs down and avoids conflict, so my first thought is GET OUT. However, I have worked hard to build the business I have, and I am at a point where in just a couple more years I hope to be much bigger, but now is not the time for that and I would like for my next move to be my last. Rent is very cheap here and in a great, central location for my clients. Do I just shut up and let these people treat me like this?
Thank you all that have read this. I appreciate any and all insight.

2023.06.03 21:49 5ft2AlbinoChoir Can someone steer me in the right direction.

I’ll try to make this as brief as possible.
I’m a musician who primarily writes music on piano and guitar, I’ve got ableton suite from a few years ago but I only know the very basics of it and haven’t made any music on it.
I’m looking to make instrumental music with synths/pads similar to Mac Millers Circles album, my problem is whenever I load up ableton I can’t find any sounds that resemble what I’m looking for, everything’s just sounds kind of harsh.
Considering the amount of instruments/sounds suite has I feel im doing something wrong. Does anyone know how I can get to making nicer, less abrasive synth sounds?

2023.06.03 21:48 bfne00 Keys fingerings

So, I know a fair amount of music theory and play a few instruments. I'm now trying to learn the melodica (I don't play piano), and figuring out chords and scales is no problem at all. Though I play the melodica mainly for jazz improvisation, I find my fingers always struggling to find the best patterns to play the phrases I am thinking of. Can somebody help me finding out exercises or lessons that could just go straight to my problem and show me only finger placements for keys instruments?
Disclaimer: english is not my 1st language so sorry if I made myself hard to understand

2023.06.03 21:40 aspen_luna lost bitch right here!

I just finished my sophomore year at a historically women’s college on the East Coast, with no intention of returning. I will most likely take a semester or even a year off from college and apply to transfer for Spring 2024 or Fall 2024.
Here are my stats:
Demographics: Chinese-American female from California
Major: Public Health (or Environmental Health/Public Policy) Minor: Dance (maybe)
College GPA (out of 4.0): 3.08
I failed a Music Theory class my second semester in my first year but I won’t majominor in anything music-related.
High school GPA: 2.9UW/3.0W
I have no SAT/ACT
APs: World History, Music Theory, English Literature, Environmental Science, and Psychology (school doesn’t offer IB or let students take more than 3 APs a year, don’t let freshmen take APs)
Extracurriculars (HS and College):
High school:
College:
Additional Info: I was hospitalized for a week during the second semester of my first year for something pretty traumatic.
I'd prefer to attend a smaller to mid-size college and stay in my home state of California. I would also love to attend a college with a vibrant social life and many parties/revelry. However, I’m open to all suggestions. I’m also not taking on any debt and don’t want to. I’m okay with either a co-ed school or a women’s college. I’m honestly kind of worried about how many of my credits will transfer since my college has college-specific requirements.
I was possibly looking into Georgia Tech (even though it’s in Georgia) and some UCs (Santa Cruz, maybe Merced) but those are long shots and I need some matches/safeties. I was also considering San Jose State and Santa Clara University.

2023.06.03 21:37 NeonRussell Feedback Needed - Student Playing Pieces Beyond His Abilities

Hello Teachers,
I have an adolescent student who likes to dabble in pieces that are beyond his level. For example, he is in Piano Safari Level 3 (for older student) and also practicing Claire de Lune at a very slow pace. He also plays music from the Studio Ghibli Films (Totoro, Spirited Away, etc.) which is quite advanced for him.
I don’t focus on these pieces in the lessons because he still has quite a lot to learn with the fundamentals which he finds boring and pedantic. So, our compromise is that we spend 5-10 minutes in the lesson looking at the more advanced pieces after we’ve spent time on his method book materials.
We have a recital coming up in two weeks and he wants to perform the advanced pieces which are very much nowhere near performance-ready (in my professional opinion). I compromised and said he could perform excerpts as long as they are memorized and demonstrated at a proficient level during our lesson. He showed up to today’s lesson saying that he can only perform the excerpts with the sheet music. And they are nowhere near proficient.
I said no and asked him to choose two pieces from the method book that he can memorize completely before next week’s lesson. I explained the purpose of the recital is to play pieces that are mastered and that we have already demonstrated proficiency at the lesson. I also require students to play pieces from memory at recitals.
The Student seemed upset with that and pretty much sulked for the rest of the lesson. He did cooperate but only barely.
Parents heard the conversation and were completely on board with what I said. The mom texted me after the lesson “thank you and sorry”.
Am I being a hard ass here? Another piano teacher colleague said I should have just let him play whatever he wanted and learn from experience. She also said he may have risen to the occasion if I gave him another chance. But I felt I had given him chances already that were not successful.
Any professional feedback would be helpful.

2023.06.03 20:49 Digitalmodernism Is anyone aware of any albums of ancient Greek music that tries to get as close as possible,at least using authentic instruments?(Not synthesizers).

I am looking for an album of Ancient Greek music that gets as close as they could to recreating the sound as it was. I know there is some known sheet music and some of the instruments have been recreated copying art.

2023.06.03 20:12 lamboeh Should i continue in trades?

I am currently a 2nd yr apprentice in sheet metal HVAC. I work in commercial contruction. The job is pretty easy, laid back most days, but cant be extremely working and repetititve. I make $25/hr and work 7am-3pm monday-friday.
The problem is im not very stimulated when im working. It drains my energy. And its pretty boring. Standing all day makes me pretty drained by the time i get home. I also get no social stimulation at work and dont work with any women. And i dont have much a social life out of work.
I am wondering weather I should try a sales job or get a simple driving job or something. Im 27 years old now but when i was younger I use to buy and sell nike jordan shoes and loved doing that and the negotiation part and selling on ebay.I also bought and curbed cars and enjoyed that. I worked as a lot porter at a dealership when i was 18 and that was the best job ever, just drove around cars all day and listened to music.
Im just not sure weather i should continue working in the trades or try something else that i might enjoy more.

2023.06.03 19:42 GrootRoots ABRSM Piano Sheet Music

I'm hoping this is allowed
I've started looking at going through the various grades for ABRSM and learning the various songs for each grade.
Does anyone know where I can get access to a list of the sheet music in PDF format (preferably free if possible) without going to the various sources which ABRSM lists?
Specifically interested in grades 1-4!
Thanks!

2023.06.03 19:23 sk-latlong “Sounds of State Street” map — what would you add?

Hey Madison. I recently started designing map prints of the Madison area, including this one called "Sounds of State Street.” My idea was to highlight various music venues, performance spaces, and events — both current and historic.
I would love to know if you think I'm missing any notable venues or events, past or present.
Are there things to add with interesting history? For example, I already have the venue where Otis Redding was supposed to play had his plane crash not happened. And a venue where U2 once played.
Any ideas welcome!

2023.06.03 19:21 Rote-Rose IIL records like Ornette Coleman’s The Shape of Jazz to Come and Free Jazz, John Coltrane’s Ascension and Albert Ayler’s Spiritual Unity WEWIL?

As someone whose background is in classical music and is really into atonality, my biggest limitation with jazz was that no matter how free the improvisation seemed it was always constrained by essentially common practice tonality and standardised rhythmic forms, but recently I’ve discovered free jazz and I’ve been very inspired. I would especially be interested in music which is more guitar or piano driven as those are my instruments.

2023.06.03 19:07 urhypedelico Could Beethoven be Artificial Intelligence?

It may sound absurd to you, but first I invite you to check the works of Bernini, anyone will do, but you may wanna check the ones Bernini supposedly made veils.

If you check the hardest contemporary works in marble you'll notice 2 things: 1 - They don't have half the perfection and details of the ones did by Bernini and most important, 2 - Those contemporary works used heavy machinery that history says it didn't exist by then plus hand work that, although far from much great pieces, took several months of the artists; when you count how many sculptures Bernini made and consider that he also worked with architecture and theater, you realize that the most talented contemporaty human artist could take a lifetime of sleepless nights of studying and making ONLY the art of sculpture and they'd still not reach near close to what Bernini did.

So I really wonder whether someone has any arguments that Bernini existed or, if he did, he was just an average human with a godlike talent.

Now, Beethoven; music is something more reacheable than sculptures in marble, right, "all it takes" is an outstanding sensitivity , a sequence of life circumstances and instrumments technique that we've already seen so many execute so beautifully.

But I'm sure I'm the only one that, while listening to Beethoven and then listening to others, feels something like "that are great masters of music who wrote marvelous music, and there's godlike music, which was written by Beethoven" and one can argue Mozart too. And once you assume Bernini couldn't be an average human, you start wonder whether Beethoven either didn't exist or simply wasn't an average human with a great sensitivity, piano technique and interesting life.
