2023.06.07 14:38 YusufOzdemir Continuous errors upon building the app

I created a simple Expo application and used eas build to build a version to Android. I also added react-native-google-ads dependency to show up ads. Everything worked as intended, but I needed to update my application.
After this the errors started to occur that I do not even remember anymore. I googled around and asked around how to deal with this and I got an advice to download Gradle to my PC. I did that and downloaded the 8.1.1 version. Now after building, I started to get version mismatch errors since the build.gradle file inside of android folder was set to 7.4.1 and in android/gradle/wrappegradle-wrapper.properties it was set to 7.5.1.all.zip. I changed the versions manually from 8.1.1 to 7.4.1 and so on. Then the Kotlin error appeared saying that 1.6.0 is needed when I have the 1.8.0 version. I even downloaded the latest Java version 20, updated my Android Studio and literally tried everything possible in the last 12 days. Now I changed back to Java 16 with gradle 7.5.1 version and it somehow managed to clean the cache with ./gradlew clean (before that I always got some kind of error).
But now another error pop ups that says something like this:
FAILURE: Build completed with 2 failures.

1: Task failed with an exception.
-----------
* What went wrong:
Execution failed for task ':app:compileDebugJavaWithJavac'.
2: Task failed with an exception.
-----------
* What went wrong:
java.lang.StackOverflowError (no error message)

And it basically warns me of the MainActivity.java files, which are created by default. This is one of the error codes: \MainActivity.java:19: error: package R does not exist
setTheme(R.style.AppTheme);
I really have no idea what is this problem. I even checked the files in there, but I suppose they should work as they're automatically created upon build? I even deleted the entire android folder and recreated it, got another error and reverted back the old one. Nothing seems to work no matter what I google.
Also, it warns me about this when I try to run it on Expo Go: Uncaught Error: java.io.IOException: Manifest string is not a valid JSONObject or JSONArray: ... and so on.
I checked the manifest and it IS auto-generated and should be okay.
My build.gradle looks likes this:
buildscript { ext { buildToolsVersion = findProperty('android.buildToolsVersion') ?: '33.0.0' minSdkVersion = Integer.parseInt(findProperty('android.minSdkVersion') ?: '21') compileSdkVersion = Integer.parseInt(findProperty('android.compileSdkVersion') ?: '33') targetSdkVersion = Integer.parseInt(findProperty('android.targetSdkVersion') ?: '33') if (findProperty('android.kotlinVersion')) { kotlinVersion = findProperty('android.kotlinVersion') } else { kotlinVersion = '1.6.0' } frescoVersion = findProperty('expo.frescoVersion') ?: '2.5.0' // We use NDK 23 which has both M1 support and is the side-by-side NDK version from AGP. ndkVersion = "23.1.7779620" } repositories { google() mavenCentral() } dependencies { classpath('com.android.tools.build:gradle:7.4.1') classpath('com.facebook.react:react-native-gradle-plugin') } } allprojects { repositories { maven { // All of React Native (JS, Obj-C sources, Android binaries) is installed from npm url(new File(['node', '--print', "require.resolve('react-native/package.json')"].execute(null, rootDir).text.trim(), '../android')) } maven { // Android JSC is installed from npm url(new File(['node', '--print', "require.resolve('jsc-android/package.json')"].execute(null, rootDir).text.trim(), '../dist')) } google() mavenCentral() maven { url 'https://www.jitpack.io' } } }
And gradle-wrapper.properties
distributionBase=GRADLE_USER_HOME distributionPath=wrappedists distributionUrl=https\://services.gradle.org/distributions/gradle-7.5.1-all.zip zipStoreBase=GRADLE_USER_HOME zipStorePath=wrappedists
Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

Findings from a Trip to Japan
Hello fellow SNES fans,
As many of you know, Japan is a haven for retro gaming. After visiting plenty of stores in Tokyo (Super Potato, Surugaya, Trader, Retro Game Camp, Friends, Bookoff & Hardoff), Kyoto (Surugaya) and Osaka (Super Potato, Surugaya, Bookoff & Hardoff), I'd like to share with you what I've scored on my vacation there on the last 2 weeks:
Purchases from 2023 Japan Vacation
1 - Hudson Super Multitap 2 (~15EUR): boxed, pre-used but pristine condition Bomberman version. This was the number 1 item on my list and although there were plenty unboxed and in pooOK condition, this was the only boxed and pristine condition I could find. Really surprised by the price.
2 - ASCII Fighter Stick (~20EUR): boxed and unused. Although I was looking for the Score Master (and didn't find it on any shop), on my last stop on an unassuming shop in Tokyo (Friends), was stunned by finding this fighter stick (that I didn't even know existed) unused, in good condition box and this cheap. Initially I was afraid the guy on the shop didn't want to sell it, but managed to score it using google translate for persuasion :D
3 - Super Famicom Mouse (~12EUR): boxed and unused. Was not planning to buy it but after seeing it unused and with box in this good condition this cheap, was an auto buy.
4 - Mario & Wario (~4EUR): loose cart, mint condition. This game was only released in Japan, works beautifully with the mouse and it's fully in English. Had to get it so my mouse purchase was justified :D
5 - Super Game Boy (~1EUR): got this from the junk section. Not tested but the shell is on very good condition. I don't have any Gameboy games yet but had to buy it for this price.
6 - Super Famicom Controllers (~4EUR): was looking for some pristine condition controllers and was also stunned about the price.
7 - Nintendo Store Super Famicom Shirt (~39EUR): this is the yellow box on top and not a retro item, but seeing it on the official Nintendo Store in Osaka had to buy it. It's crazy that the most expensive item on this list is a cotton t-shirt with some print on it.

Summary: since I have a NTSC SNES console and games, I didn't want to buy Japanese games as they would not fit my collection and I don' t speak/read Japanese (even though some awesome rarities were available for a reasonable price). Was really stoked with the vast amount of hardware available and their good condition (not only for SNES but for all retro platforms out there).
If you are planning a trip to Japan and is up for grabs on hardware, make sure you're bringing an extra bag :D

2023.06.07 13:11 TheKingOfSpite Bitlocker keys not appearing in Azure?

Made this post in office365 but kept getting auto-removed so forgive me for clogging the feed
Have been enabling bitlocker for one of our clients, have been doing it manually per machine as the client (rightly) doesn't want to buy an Intune license just to manage this.
Have got the keys saved in a secure location, but having checked both in the tenant Azure and the actual users My Devices section, I can't see the key in there, although this has all been within the last 5 mins to be fair.
The real question I suppose; does the client now require an Intune license in order for 365 to store Bitlocker keys?

2023.06.07 13:08 iconichal Confused between new Magnite base model vs 2020 Swift Zxi

Hey lovely people of this community!
So I finally decided to get a car. It is worth noting that this is going to be my first car and is going to be shared with my brothers - one of them knows how to drive but the other doesn't (just letting you know if that makes any difference in the decision making)
Now coming to the problem: I have two options. Until today, I was going with 2020 Swift Zxi that is clocked at 5k, getting it for 6.3lac. Decided to go with this as it got all the fancy features such as
It seemed like a complete package to me with only android auto, apple carplay missing which is something I can always go with aftermarket solution later.
But then someone confused me by showing their Nissan Magnite base model. The guy had an audio system, central locking, arm rest installed from aftermarket.
Nissan Magnite is available for around 6.65lac (base model). So yeah now I am confused. Does it make sense to go with the new vehicle i.e. Magnite or the old one i.e. Swift.
I was about to finalize the Swift today but now not sure what to do.
I am turning to you guys for your opinion so please help me out here and drop your thoughts or suggestions.
Thanks a lot

2023.06.07 13:05 katejo708 SEO Services at Technoly: Boost Your Website's Visibility and Drive Organic Traffic

In today's digital age, having a strong online presence is crucial for the success of any business. And when it comes to establishing and growing your online presence, search engine optimization (SEO) plays a pivotal role. By optimizing your website and its content, you can improve your visibility on search engine result pages (SERPs) and attract organic traffic. That's where SEO services at Technoly come into the picture. In this article, we'll explore the various SEO services offered by Technoly and how they can help you enhance your website's visibility and drive more organic traffic.

The Importance of SEO Services

What is SEO and Why Does It Matter?

SEO, or search engine optimization, is a set of strategies and techniques aimed at improving a website's visibility on search engines like Google, Bing, and Yahoo. With billions of searches performed every day, search engines have become the go-to resource for people seeking information, products, or services. When your website appears higher in the search results for relevant keywords, you have a better chance of attracting potential customers and generating leads.

The Benefits of Investing in SEO Services

  1. Increased Organic Traffic: SEO helps drive organic traffic to your website, meaning people who find your site through unpaid search results. This targeted traffic is more likely to convert into customers.
  2. Improved User Experience: SEO involves optimizing your website's structure, navigation, and content, which enhances the user experience. A user-friendly website leads to longer visit durations and higher engagement.
  3. Brand Visibility and Credibility: Ranking higher on SERPs establishes your brand's credibility and authority in your industry. Users tend to trust websites that appear at the top of search results.
  4. Long-Term Results: Unlike paid advertising, SEO provides long-term benefits. Once your website starts ranking well, it continues to attract organic traffic without ongoing ad spend.
  5. Cost-Effective Marketing: Compared to traditional advertising methods, SEO offers a higher return on investment (ROI) since you're targeting people actively searching for your products or services.

2023.06.07 13:01 auto_generated_nick Free browser extension that reads YouTube subtitles aloud. Useful for passive foreign language exposure and contemporary cultural exposure.

I've developed a free browser extension that reads YouTube subtitles aloud on Edge, Chrome, and Firefox without any ads. It's designed with language learning in mind, as studies (linked below) have shown the benefits of passive exposure for language acquisition. Realistically speaking, for more than picking up some words and phrases (for example hearing “securidad” in subtitles, then hearing “security” in the content, and connecting, passively that it’s the same thing, but for way more words), it takes thousands of hours.
That’s also how I learned English, as a Slavic language native speaker – by consuming material even when I didn’t fully understand it, and or at faster playback rate, I learned from context, just as kids do when they learn their first language.
This extension can also benefit the blind community, offering easier access to foreign content and passive language learning. Personally, I use it to watch foreign videos, allowing me to focus on other activities while still absorbing the content.
After installation, voice selection/speed/volume sliders show when you click extension’s icon. To make it play "voiceover", one would need to select a checkbox next to language name underneath a YouTube video. It has to be a checkbox though, as above that field, the links will be just for downloading subtitles. If no subtitles are provided with the video, then it will be written underneath the video that no subtitles are available. Generally, some channels are better than others with providing subtitles.
Chrome Web Store link (will work with Edge browser too)
Firefox Browser Add-ons
For non-English languages, Edge offers high-quality AI voices, Chrome supports various Google Translate voices, and Firefox has a very limited selection. Additional voices installed on your system should also be detected.
If you try the extension, your feedback is highly appreciated. It took me loads of time to make it from a point where it was useful for me only, to the point to make it usable by other people.
I'm open to ideas. My goal is to create unique and useful stuff for my portfolio, enhancing my prospects of getting a software development job. Rather than cloning existing software, like many other people who also want to get a job, I would rather develop practical and beneficial tools, which definitely helps with motivation. Often, sadly I get an idea, only to find out that something like that had been already created.
Links to related scientific studies follow:

Minimal Permissions and Open Source Code

I structured the extension to require minimal permissions and the source code is open for inspection. I believe in transparency. By keeping permissions to a minimum, we ensure that your browsing experience remains secure and protected.

Resource Efficiency

The code of this extension has been developed with resource efficiency in mind. I have some formal software engineering background, which allowed me to optimize the code for performance. For example, I employed binary search algorithm to enhance an array search functionality, minimizing resource consumption. I made sure the code does no more than is absolutely necessary.

I (M30) took part in a paid study at my local university that studied the affects of different diets on abdominal weight gain. I’ve put on nearly 115 pounds in 1.5 years. The money was worth it, but wondering if they took it too far… can’t believe what I look like now lol
HERE are some pictures and videos taken by me or others over the course of the last year and a half.
My local university was conducting a medical study on the affects of different diets on weight gain. I signed up and was chosen and the potential money to be made was very appealing. The first two months of the study involved simply eating at a calorie surplus on a premade diet to see how it affected my body’s weight gain. After taking measurements after these initial two months, if my body’s measurements represented any kind of high percentile outlier, I would be selected to potentially continue for the entire 1.5 year study focused on a particular area of the body. Of all of the participants, my abdominal girth was at the highest percentile ratio of girth compared to weight/height, so they selected me to participate focusing on abdominal weight gain and to see how severe it could be.
They paid me about $3,000 a month and had all of my food paid for as I followed a specific premade diet plan that changed every 2 or 3 months to study the affects these specific diets had. Some were dairy heavy, carb heavy, specific types of meats only, mixing in alcohol consumption, specific supplements, etc. I’m incredibly busy in my life with work right now and having a free premade meal plan plus so much extra cash was too good to pass up. So I decided to continue for the entire 1.5 year study.
Fast forward to now, having finished the entire trial, I am starting to have some serious regrets. I’ve put on nearly 115 pounds since last January and I never expected the results to have me looking like this. Honestly, I think even the researchers themselves were really shocked by my result. My ratio of abdominal girth to height/weight is at the highest percentile of the study, their entire student body, and anyone who has participated in the study before. I gained most all of the weight in my torso, which they are severely attributing to genetics and simply the effectiveness of the tailored diets they had me following.
I obviously look ridiculous now. I haven’t even been able to keep up with buying a new professional wardrobe for work (as you can tell my the pictures and videos linked). I was gaining an average of 7 pounds a month, some months being just 3 pounds and some being an entire 15 pounds in a month. So many things are difficult… I break a sweat going up one flight of stairs, I can hardly put my shoes or socks on, fitting into restaurant booths is nearly impossible, getting in and out of my car or off the couch takes preparation. People stare at me in stores or on the street. I had a homeless guy ask me “Jesus Christ, what the fuck? Are you pregnant, dude?” once. My coworkers are polite but make comments here and there.
I haven’t seen my family since early in the study when the weight gain wasn’t very noticeable. I’m seeing them in 2 weeks for a reunion, and I cannot even imagine what they are going to say. I didn’t tell them I took part in this because I knew they wouldn’t approve, but now I wish I had because how am I going to prepare them or explain to them why I look like this now and how it happened so fast. I’m worried to fit on the plane on the way there and having to travel. I’m so nervous to see them. And honestly would like any genuine opinions of whether or not I’m blowing this out of proportion or if they are genuinely going to be shocked. Maybe I can hide it better if I find the right clothing.
I really regret doing this now for the most part and hope I’m able to start reversing it as soon as possible. Thanks for letting me vent. Happy to also answer any questions on what I learned nutritionally and what the different diets did and how they affected me too.

2023.06.07 07:42 Ahsan789506 How to Reset Snapchat Password without Phone Number?

An average Android user has multiple social media apps installed on his smartphone; each one has a different username and password. Apart from that, several online websites and platforms require you to create an account, adding to the list of usernames and passwords. In these circumstances, it is quite common to forget the password for one or multiple social media apps, and if you’re someone who has forgotten your Snapchat password, here’s how to reset your Snapchat password without phone number.
Thankfully, all of these apps allow you to reset the password in case you forget it. There are multiple methods to do so, like using email, phone number, etc. In this article, we will discuss the detailed password recovery process for one such popular social media app, Snapchat.
Although Snapchat does not require you to sign-in every time and has an auto-login feature, there are times when we do need to type in our username and password manually. It could be while logging in on a new device or if we accidentally get logged out of our own device. However, you won’t be able to do so if you have forgotten your password. The only alternative is to reset your Snapchat password. So, without any further ado, let’s get started.
How to Reset Snapchat Password without Phone Number
1. How to Reset your Snapchat Password via Email
If you have forgotten your Snapchat password, then there are multiple ways to reset it. The simplest and easiest way is by using your email. While creating your Snapchat account, you must have registered via a working email address. You can use this email again to change the password. Given below is a step-wise guide for the same.
  1. The first thing that you need to do is open is the Snapchat app and from the login page click on the Forgot your Password option.
  2. Now on the next page, select the “via Email” option.
  3. After that, enter the email address associated with your Snapchat account and tap on the Submit button.
  4. Now open your email app (e.g. Gmail or Outlook), and you go to Inbox.
  5. Here, you will find an email from Snapchat that contains a link to reset your password.
  6. Click on it and will take you to a page where you can create a new password.
  7. After, come back to the Snapchat app and log in with your new password.
  8. That’s it; you are all set. If you want, you can note it down someplace in case you forget it again.

2. How to Reset Snapchat Password from the website
The previous method that we discussed relies on using the Snapchat app to reset your password. However, if you do not have your phone nearby, then you can also reset your password from the official website of Snapchat. Follow the steps given below to see how.
  1. Firstly click here to go to the official website of Snapchat.
  2. Now click on the “Forget Password” option.
  3. Snapchat will now ask you to submit the email address that is associated with your Snapchat account.
  4. Enter that and tap on the Submit button.
  5. In the next step, you might have to take the “I am not a Robot” test.
  6. Once you complete that, Snapchat will send a password recovery email similar to the previous case.
  7. Go to the email inbox, open this email, and click on the Reset password link.
  8. Now you can create a new password, and you are all set. You can use this password to log in to the future.
3. How to Reset Snapchat password via your Phone
Snapchat also allows you to use your phone to reset your password. If you have linked your phone number to your Snapchat account, then you can use it to reset your password. Snapchat will send you an OTP on the registered mobile number, and you can use this to reset your password. This method only works if you have linked a phone number to your Snapchat account and you have that phone on your person. If these conditions are true, then follow the steps given below to reset your password.
  1. Open your Snapchat app and from the login page tap on the “Forgot your password?” option.
  2. On the next screen, select the “Via Phone” option.
  3. After that, enter the registered phone number and tap on the Continue option.
  4. Now you can either receive the verification code “via Text” or “phone call”. Select whichever method is more convenient for you.
  5. Once you receive the verification code (via text or call) enter it in the designated space.
  6. Now you will be taken to the “Set a password” page.
  7. Here, go ahead and create a new password for your Snapchat account.
  8. You can now use this new password to sign in to your account.
4. Recover your Password using Google Password Manager
You might have noticed that Google prompts you to save your username and password when you sign up or log in to a new website or app. The main purpose behind this is to save time as you would no longer need to type in the username and password the next time; Google will automatically do it for you.
Now, there is a good chance that you might have saved the password for Snapchat as well when you first created the account. All these saved passwords are stored in Google Password Manager. Follow the steps given below to recover your password using Google Password Manager.
  1. Firstly, open Settings on your device and tap on the Google option.
  2. Now click on the “Manage your Google Account” option.
  3. After that, go to the Security tab, and here you will find the Password manager once you scroll down to the bottom. Tap on it.
  4. Now look for Snapchat in the list and tap on it.
  5. You can reveal the password by tapping on the ‘View’ button.
  6. With this information, you will be able to log in to your Snapchat app.
5. Try to Figure out which Email id you had used to create the Snapchat account
If none of the above methods works, then it is going to be a little difficult to regain access to your Snapchat account. Snapchat primarily requires either the email id or the registered phone number to reset your password. Therefore, you need to figure out which email id you had originally used.
To do so, you need to look for the Welcome email that Snapchat must have sent you when you first created the account. If you find this email in your inbox, it will be confirmed that this is the email associated with your Gmail account.
In case you have multiple email accounts, you need to check the inbox for each of them and search for the Welcome email from Snapchat. Use keywords like “Welcome to Snapchat”, “Team Snapchat”, “Confirm email”, etc. Snapchat usually sends the welcome email from the email address “no_[email protected]”. Try searching for this id and see if you have received an email or not. If you find it, then you can use this email id to reset your password.
Bonus: Reset your Password when you are signed in to the app
You should know how to reset your password even when you are signed in to Snapchat. Changing your password once in a while is a good practice as it not only helps you remember it and makes your account more secure. It reduces the chances of your account getting hacked. When you use the same password for years and at multiple places, hackers can easily crack them and access your account. Therefore, you should try to reset your password frequently, at least once in six months. Follow the steps given below to see how.
  1. The first thing that you need to do is open the Snapchat app.
  2. Now tap on the Settings option.
  3. Here, select the Password option under My Account.
  4. Now tap on the Forgot password option and select how you would like to receive the verification code.
  5. Use it to go to the next page where you can set up a new password.
  6. To make sure that the changes have been applied, log out of the app and then log in again using the new password.
With that, we come to the end of this article. We hope that you find this information useful and you were able to reset your Snapchat password without phone number. It is frustrating not to be able to sign in to your own Snapchat account. You might also be a little scared of losing your data forever. However, there are multiple ways to recover and reset your password, as discussed in this article.
We would advise you to try these and not to panic unnecessarily. At the end of the day, if nothing else works, you can always contact Snapchat support and hope that they help you recover your account. Tap on the Help option at the bottom of the login page, and here you will find the option to contact support.

2023.06.07 05:49 Full-Insurance-7452 Moving to Edmonton for Work

In the near future I'll be moving from southern Ontario to Edmonton for work. I will be working at an office that is located in the Eastgate Business Park so I am thinking about renting a place somewhere on the east side of Edmonton.
I'm hoping to rent a place in an area of Edmonton that is close to my work place (Eastgate) and some other amenities like stores or recreational areas.
I used to live in Toronto for University (York University in North York) and the neighborhood (York University Heights) was right beside the Jane & Finch neighborhood. We would receive security emails about incidents on campus. Sometimes there would be robberies or stabbings on campus. You could still walk around and feel safe, just had to be vigilant at night. My residences had security guards on patrol at night so we weren't fully exposed to the risk of a break and enter. I had a vehicle at York University one year and I never experienced vehicle theft.
In contrast, the area I grew up in (Simcoe County) was really peaceful and had low crime. You could walk around and feel safe in most of the communities, even late at night. Shootings, stabbings, robberies, etc happen occasionally but you generally don't have to worry.
It would be great to live in a community where I am not likely to encounter shootings, stabbings, residential break and enter, or vehicle theft. I am going to be on my own and I may have a vehicle so I don't want to put myself at too much risk. I don't expect Edmonton to be as quiet as Simcoe County but I would like to live in an area that is safer than Northwestern Toronto.
Which communities are good to rent in and which communities should I avoid?

Mick about to do something incredible

With the awards ceremony out of the way, and my explanation of how the long range contest works out of the way, it was time to get to practicing our shots. My weapon of choice was a Cheytac M200 Intervention, a vintage rifle from the early 2000s. One of my personal favorites in the collection, it’s a piece with a lot of absolutely fascinating history, originally used by a Marine corps covert marksman, fighting in Ukraine. This thing has personally sent rounds through a few Russian commanders, denoted by the 7 tally marks on the side of the receiver. Sounds a little weird to be using a gun that has confirmed kills marked on the side, but that conflict happened over a century ago, so the blood has long cleared off its history in my eyes.

As a warmup, I would have to calibrate my spotting scope, and re-zero the scope that I had placed on the top of my rifle. It was a ‘relic’ by today’s standards, but it’s still a great scope for the time nonetheless. Mick was watching me extract the rifle from the case, where I then assembled it like an assassin would in a cheesy action movie. Snap the barrel to the receiver, slip the bipod on for good measure, extend the stock, slip the bolt into the chamber, and we’re good to go.

“What gun is that?’ Mick questioned. “I’ve never seen it before.”

“Ah, this is just my personal long range gun, an Intervention. Used to be super popular in video games of the 2000s, but now we’ve got much better options for taking out things at range.”

“That looks a bit too big for me to shoot, you got anything for me? I saw another couple boxes in the car, one of those has to be mine, right?”

He was right, I had got him one a little more suited to his size, and something else for later.

“You’re right, I did bring something for you,” I responded. I was quite excited to see what he thought of the little gun I got for him, although this one I wouldn’t be gifting to him right away. “Go grab the smallest thing out of the car, it should be labeled for you!”

I watched as he walked over to the car, his tail wagging behind him, as it usually did when we were messing around with firearms and stuff. I'm wondering if he got paired with me on purpose, since he seems to be the only venlil I know of interested in guns and engineering, just like I am.

Mick returned with his rifle, plopped it down onto the bench we would be shooting from, and extracted his rifle. A Desert Tech SRS-A2 sniper rifle. This little thing was a compact, hard hitting bolt action bullpup from, again, the early 2000s. Did I mention that’s my favorite time period for my guns? Anyway, this would be the perfect rifle for mick, since it actually fit his slightly smaller stature perfectly. At 5 foot 6 inches, he’s a bit shorter than I am, at 6 feet even.

We got situated onto the bench, Mick handed me his rifle for calibration, so I did so, then handed it back to him. Modern boresights made it incredibly easy to zero things, as it would calculate drop for whatever settings you could input into it, meaning you just put the crosshair on where it should land and you have an accurate shot for the conditions specified. Quite incredible if you ask me, somehow it just kinda…works. I’m certainly not complaining.

I went ahead and loaded up the magazine for Mick’s rifle. Despite its small stature, the SRS was still quite powerful. I configured it with the longest barrel, and put a .338 chamber and bolt in there, the highest caliber that would fit the time frame of the competition. Modern versions of the gun could be chambered in pretty much anything you want, but I prefer to stick within proper time periods for my builds. Sure, I could slap a cutting edge auto-zeroing, thermal, solar powered, auto range finding, perfectly accurate every time guaranteed scope on top of my Lee-Enfield from 1914, but what’s the fun in that? It looks awkward, is completely historically wrong, and wouldn’t help anyone that is already a good shooter anyway.

I signed up for the vintage challenge because of that specifically, it only allows rifles and attachments from before the 2030s, the latest time period I’d be invested in. It actually had some challenges, rather than being point and shoot.

“Hey Finn you there? You zoned out a little…”

“Oh, sorry, just thinkin.”

“No worries, I just wanna shoot my gun, and you’re kinda holding it right now.”

“Ah sorry, here.”

I handed the rifle back to him, and walked on over to the spotter scope I had left nearby. This device was a standalone scope that just sat on a tripod, had a 36x zoom (a bit more than we needed but that’s fine), and an angled viewport so you just had to take a look into it without bending down quite as far.

Our target was about 200 meters away, a solid long distance shot for most, but pretty easy with the right equipment.

“OK, you ready mick? Move the throw lever to a higher magnification so you can see what you're aiming at, the red target marked 200.”

“Got it, I see it.”

“Ok, wind is… 4 MPH to the left, aim just slightly right of center, up one notch from the crosshair.”

“Ok, I'm aiming, fire?”

“When ready!” Time to see how good mick’s exact shot placement is, the goal being the exact center of the target.

Mick squeezed his trigger, I felt the blast off to my left, and I watched the .338 tracer round fly through the air. Impact a bit high and to the right. Solid characteristics of a flinched shot, compounded by the fact that I watched him flinch when he pulled the trigger.

“Bud, you flinched it a little. It’s ok if you don’t hit dead center, ya know.”

“Sorry… just feels like I've got a lot of pressure over my head for some reason.”

“Hey, don’t apologize for nothing, save it for mistakes.” I paused for a moment to let it sink in. “Can you think of why you might have flinched?”

“Probably just that I have that streak of not missing once going, and I feel like I’ll lose that.”

“Alright then, lemme help.”

I scooted over, racked another round into his gun, and told him just to slam a round into the dirt under the target. Hopefully breaking the (frankly impressive) no misses streak he had going would stop him from flinching. I then told him to try again, the wind moved a little right this time, so I told him to hold one mill to the left.

Another puff of wind, another tracer flying downrange. The projectile slammed face first into the middle of the target, only off by about a quarter of an inch. Exactly where I wanted him to hit it, not perfect but still quite good.

“Nice shot, didn’t flinch it this time I see?”

“Oh wow, I'm surprised that it worked, are you always this skilled at reading people?”

“I am when they tell me what the problem is, such as you’ve done.”

“AH. Yea that would help.”

That’s another thing I like about Mick, he’s always incredibly honest. If he’s not hiding anything he’ll just outright say what’s wrong instead of so many other people who will carry on as if nothing’s wrong despite the fact that there’s a problematic thorn stuck in their side.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________

After about 30 minutes of me practicing shot calling and Mick practicing his aim on further and further targets, it was time for the competition. It consisted of a speed shot contest, hit the 300 meter target 5 times quickly, the ‘White Feather’ shot, hit a 2 inch target from 500 meters, and the ‘Sniper Elite’ shot, a half-covered man size target from 1.5 kilometers away. Thankfully for that one it doesn’t matter where you hit him, as long as you do hit him.

The familiar whistle rang out, drawing the competitors away from their firearms and towards the instructors, here to tell us how the rules worked. I had heard (and delivered) this spiel so many times I knew it by heart, so I just tuned it out until he was done rambling. Mick listened intently, according to his ears, at least. Those ears gave a good indicator of the amount of attention he was paying to any given thing, for instance, if he was focused on the shot he was about to take I noticed he would sweep them backward, like a cat about to start bouncing off the walls, or when he was focusing on someone’s conversation they would angle forward slightly.

I was pulled from that train of thought when the instructor finished his explanation of the rules, and we were allowed to return to our tables to get ready for the competition ahead. I removed the magazine, press checked the chamber, and put a flag in for good measure. Mick followed suit, and we were ready to compete. I decided we wouldn’t be waiting too long this time, since we had been here before everyone else. I was going first, mick would be my spotter (thankfully he would only have to call out the wind, since I can handle rangefinding and elevation), then we would switch out for me as the spotter and Mick as the sniper, where I would have to tell him exactly where to aim on the crosshairs.

We were called forward to our bench, where the magic would begin. I laid out a few extra magazines in front of me, I was definitely going to need them for that 1500 shot, re-calibrated the rangefinder for mick, and set up the shot timer that we would both have to use. I was now ready to go, and was just waiting for the instructor to give me the go-ahead.

The instructor noticed that we were ready to go, so he began his usual lines. “Shooter ready? Standby…”

BEEP!

I quickly flipped the safety off, racked a round into the chamber, and began lining up for the speed shots. “Mick, what's the wind like?” I requested, with urgency.

“About… 2 miles leftward?”

I aimed ever so slightly to the right of the center of my target, and released the breath I was holding. Exhale, pause, squeeze slowly but surely… fire. Impact a fraction of a second later, half an inch off the center. Rack the bolt again, new round in the chamber, repeat. Aim, exhale… fire. Impact. Rack bolt, aim center, exhale… fire, impact.

This sequence repeated 2 more times, both shots landing in a very tight group around the center of the target. Next up was the ‘White feather’ shot, hitting a tiny, 2x2 target from extreme distance.

I threw the zoom lever on the scope to the right, adjust the zero to 500, request the windage.

“What’s the wind now?” I asked again. It had been long enough where the wind may have changed direction.

“6 miles per hour, slightly right but mostly parallel to the range, seems like.”

That meant I had to hold one dot left, aim slightly lower than the target due to the wind carrying it further than I could easily zero for. I place the target into the spot in my scope, hold my breath for a moment, exhale, hold… fire.

“Impact low, centered.” Mick called out. I had overcompensated for the wind’s carrying effect, so I had hit a bit low of the 2 inch wide target. Adjust so it’s on the line, still one mil dot to the left, exhale, hold… fire. The bullet did its thing, and impacted the little red circle. A simple, yet deceptively hard shot, even if you have accurate holds and an even more accurate rifle. Funnily enough, the guy who originally made the shot this competition was trying to emulate happened to be my great (x9) grandfather. Carlos Hathcock was notorious during the Vietnam war, gaining a bounty of over 30000 dollars just on him alone. Nobody managed to claim that bounty, fortunately, but many counter-snipers tried.

On one of those occasions, a sniper caught sight of him from roughly 500 meters away, leaving a notable glint from the reflection on the front of the scope. He then took aim at the flash, and fired his rifle, where the bullet went straight through the scope into the enemy sniper’s eye. A frankly insane shot, even under ideal conditions such as we have here. Thankfully, we only have to hit about half a playing card rather than a tiny, 1 inch wide tube.

Next was the ‘Sniper Elite’ shot, apparently named after an old video game about sniping, set during the second world war. At first I couldn’t see the target, 1.5 kilometers is quite an insane distance even for some of the more skilled shooters, such as myself. I had to spot the little flag flying next to it, then find it again within the magnified scope. I threw the magnification all the way up, ticked up the zero until it hit its maximum, 1000 meters. Seems the maker of this scope never expected anyone to try and throw a round more than a kilometer down range, but here I was doing it anyway.

“Mick, wind?” I asked, a bit too impatiently.

“Here it looks like… 7 MPH going perpendicular toward the right.”

“Thank you.” I said, hoping to make up for my impatience.

I placed my aim onto the target, aimed with the lowest mil on the scope, shift left 1 and a half, hold breath, exhale, hold… Fire!

I watched the tracer take its sweet time waltzing it’s way over yonder to the target. I could also see it impact the ground about a foot too low. I had to try again. I quickly racked the bolt, putting another .408 round into the chamber.

I aimed, then I pulled the zoom lever on the scope back to the left, zooming back out so I could see the other mils that were hidden under the eye box of the scope. It was exactly what I needed.

I placed the crosshair back on the target, raised it up a few mils until I was aiming the same way I was before, then lifted my point of aim another few inches up. If the wind hadn’t changed too much, this should hit roughly the center of the target.

Hold breath, exhale, hold… fire. The tracer flew through the air again, whacking itself straight into the center of the target.

A buzzer rang from behind us signaling the end of the run. 20 seconds for the speed shots, 30 for the scope shot, and another 25 for the long range. 75 seconds is enough to get full bonus points, plus a little penalty for missing twice, means that I get a score of 13, out of 15. Not bad, not bad at all.

We had a short break, where I set Mick's rifle up, showed him how to adjust for distance, and where the bullets should roughly land when accounting for wind and drop. Mick picked up how to do it quickly, as he seemed to do with anything I showed him, I wonder if he has some sort of neurodivergence? It doesn’t matter to me if he does, I just like having a friend around.

The instructor informed us that it was time for Mick to do his run. I handed Mick the magazines, and got set up behind the spotter scope. Both of us gave the signal for the instructor to begin his timing.

“Shooter ready? Standby…”

BEEP!

I watched as Mick quickly zeroed the scope for 300 meters, placed his aim onto the target, and let his round loose. As expected, smack dab in the middle. I was now just watching through the spotter scope, seeing the rounds hit and calling out if they did or not. “Hit!”

Mick cycled the bolt, throwing the empty case to the floor next to the stand where we were set up. He managed to keep the rifle stable on the target, so he barely had to adjust before sending another round directly on target. “Hit!”

This repeated another three times, fire, “hit!”, cycle. Mick’s aim was still impeccable, although that wasn’t saying much due to it only being a 300 meter shot. Mick redirected his aim over to the 2x2 inch target that was for the ‘White Feather’ shot. I watched him click the dial for distance over another 4 notches, zeroing for 500 meters.

I glanced over to the windage monitor, it proclaimed that the wind was going at 3 MPH to the right of the range. I calculated in my head that it would mean he would have to adjust to the left about half of a mil dot, so I relayed this to him. “About half a mil left, exactly on the middle crosshair line.

Mick flicked his ears in an affirmative gesture, and I saw the rifle nudge ever so slightly to the left. His shot impacted the middle of the target on its first trip downrange, even better than I did.

“HIT!”

Next up was that ‘Sniper Elite’ shot, a simple hit at 1500 meters was all you needed. Mick swung his aim over to the target, flicked the zoom all the way in, and rotated the zeroing to 1500. Fortunately for him, his scope actually went all the way out to 2000 meters, so he didn’t have to miss, then guesstimate like I had.

I once again glanced at the wind monitor, and it was practically nothing.

0.2 MPH.

The air was perfectly still (or as still as you could reasonably hope for) so there was no better opportunity than now for him to get this perfect shot off. “Dead center of the target, the wind’s stopped!”

Out of my peripheral vision, I see Mick holding his breath like I had, then slowly pulling the trigger. The rifle did it’s thing, a hammer falling into a striker, setting off a primer, deflagrating exactly 275 grains of gunpowder, propelling a single copper coated round down the barrel at 3000 feet per second, sending it off on the most textbook shot in the history of long range shooting, the bullet spiraled through the air, nearing closer to its destination every millisecond.

The wind decided to cooperate with us today, keeping itself stock still as the round sliced through the air, on a collision course with the exact center of the man sized silhouette target that sat at the end of the range.

I saw through the spotter scope, a bullet impact its target with an unparalleled level of luckiness, flattening itself against the steel of the target.

“FUCKIN HIT! NICE SHOT MICK!” I shouted, immediately standing up with my arm poised for the greatest high five any man or venlil had ever seen.

Mick had seen the bullet impact, but wasn’t quite as excited as I was. He still got up, noticing my excitement through those side facing eyes of his, then he raised his own paw, held it back, ready to slingshot it against mine.

The ultimately satisfying sound of a good high five soon followed, our hands (and paws) slapping together right at the palms, the force resonating loud enough to actually make the active hearing protection dampen it for us. The impressiveness of the shot was not to be undersold, and we were about to learn what mick’s score was.

The instructor walked over, then told us what his results were.

86 seconds, 15 points out of a total of 15, one bonus point for time, not counted due to an already perfect score. I could barely believe it, Mick was wagging his tail, the instructor even looked a little impressed. Mick had probably won it, or at least tied for first.

An hour or 2 later, all the other competitors had taken their shots. I ended up getting tied for 3rd, with one other competitor. I decided that I would give up whatever prize I would have gotten to the other guy, since I already won once today. The podium ceremony was next up, this time Mick was at the top of it. He got a voucher for a rifle again, like the guy that won the IPSC section, but he could also trade it in for about 1000 bucks of stuff from the equipment store. He got himself a plate carrier similar to mine, a nice faux leather holster (which now contained his pistol), and another pair of tactical pants, this time in tan-gray instead of the navy blue of the ones he won.

Our next and final competition was coming up soon, some sort of mix between Olympic and skeet shooting. Why they decided to combine both of those, I had no idea. Sounds fun anyway, so I’m not gonna question it.

2023.06.07 05:32 Black_Pride1994 I once pee'd in the air filter section at an O'Reilly Auto Parts.....

I was really, really drunk from day drinking all day while working on my buddies late 70s Toyota Celica. We went to the auto store to get some oil and a filter and by the time I got in the store I could not hold it any longer and blatantly just pee'd in the first shelf I came across. Crazy thing is not a single person noticed!!!! He got the stuff, paid, and we left. Side note I have pissed in the bathroom sink at this particular friends house numerous times.

A Chrome extension that aids everyday usage
I made ChatGPT-Augment as a toy project that tests out frameworks/libraries that I could not use in my job. However just like a few of my previous toy projects (namely PocoHud, etc.) I decided to open-source it and share with others while the fun lasts.

Welcome to ChatGPT-Augment! This Chrome extension enhances your chat experience by adding several useful features. With ChatGPT-Augment, you can auto-continue conversations, use macros to expand shorthand, count tokens in real-time, restore prompts, clear prompts with a single click, scroll over gradients, and even format JSON easily.
Yes, you guessed it. This Readme is also written by ChatGPT.
You can check out README.md on the github project page to get more details. Currently it's not available on Chrome Web store (because I JUST asked a review) but you can audit and download the extension on your own, if you're brave enough.
Currently the only "Shortcut" is bound to Ctrl/Cmd+E. This may be updated to allow custom bindings but only when I find the needs ;)
Of course not officially endorsed nor affiliated with ChatGPT. This is a random developer's toy project. Feel free to contact me with more ideas and possible improvements. I'll (try to) maintain the project until it breaks. lol
ps: It also allows you to scroll the page over the pesky gradient with a few lines of css. hehe.
ps2: Share your shorthands. I found myself using 'tbl' => 'in a table.' a lot. Also I saved my custom-made stable-diffusion prompt generator as 'sd' and it works great.

2023.06.07 05:09 cheater00 Devs: Can we get better Steam Deck trackpad support please?

Hi devs, I really love playing the remake on my Steam Deck, but there's just one thing that I think could be done much better. That's the use of the right trackpad. So let me describe a few situations where things aren't as good as they could be. Then I'll propose something you could talk to Valve about to make the life of gamers playing your game - and possibly other games as well - much better.

The problem

The trackpad is great for precision input, but there are two places I would like to use it and they're not really compatible with each other:
I normally move and aim using the right stick, but I'd like to be able to do fine aiming using the trackpad. OK, that can be done using the "As Mouse" setting in the Steam Controller options for the game. I can do fine aiming now using the right trackpad.
Now let's talk about the inventory view. "As Mouse" kiiiinda works but it's not great. You run out of space on the trackpad and have to lift your finger to keep moving the cursor, and this means eg you can't drag items around the inventory very well by pressing on the trackpad (to click the mouse) and then dragging. On the other hand, the inventory works great with the "Mouse Region" mode for the trackpad. So instead of "As Mouse" you set "Mouse Region" in the Steam Controller settings. At that point, basically the trackpad maps to the screen 1:1, and the cursor is always guaranteed to be able to cover the whole screen in one move. No more raising your thumb. You always know where your cursor ends up on the interface. However, if you try aiming with this mode enabled, the game just goes crazy, spinning around wildly.

The proposed solution

Steam Controller has something called mode shifts, which is basically, you press a button, and your controller cycles through one of many configurations stored for the game. However, System Shock already uses absolutely all the buttons I got on the Deck including the back paddles, plus having to press a button every time you enteexit the inventory sounds like a stupid and annoying thing to have to do. I know it's a tall order, but maybe you guys could get in touch with Valve for some way where the game could inform the steam controller layer, so that it can shift modes automatically? So when you are in the first person view, the steam controller is in one mode, and when you're in the inventory, the steam controller is in another mode.
This would be absolutely great and it would make playing your game on the Deck just soooooooo much better. As it is right now, it's a bit of a chore sometimes, because either the inventory interface is kind of busted, or I don't have good fine aim.
I hope you can take this to Valve and talk to them about it. This would be absolutely great. I know they really like to support lots of interesting new stuff on the Deck, so who knows, maybe this could become a thing.

The implementation of the solution

Technically, I would imagine the game registers with a Steam API by using some sort of config file in the game directory that defines modes the game itself will identify to steam automatically during the gameplay. So you'd have eg steamcontroller.cfg next to the executable, and inside it the following contents:
[ModeShifts] FirstPersonView Inventory Cyberspace
This cfg would be a text file and it would be read by the Steam client, and would populate the Steam Controller config with these two mode shifts. So now, if you go to the Steam Controller settings page, you have two mode shifts pre-populated, and you can edit them separately.
In the game, when one of these UI modes gets selected in the game by any means, the game hooks into some dll, say SteamController.dll that's provided by Valve/Steam, and calls AnnounceModeShift("FirstPersonView") etc, with a C string that's up to 4096 characters long.
If a mode shift by the name you announce doesn't exist in Steam Controller config, nothing should happen. But if it does, then that mode shift should be selected.
Why use a config file with strings inside it you might ask. Well this is so that the Steam Controller configurator can get all the info it needs (the names of the modes your game might announce to it) without actually running any of your code and even before the game is first executed.
I tried to keep this idea as simple as possible: almost all the work is done by Steam Controller already and you'd have to add a few function calls here and there, but implementing such an interface should be really easy for you guys on your end. I'm a programmer and I tried to keep it so simple to where I can't imagine it taking a lot of time if such an API was provided by Valve. And on the other hand it would seem like the design should be fairly simple to implement for Valve as well, even if they would have to do a bunch of work with scanning for the file and exposing an API.
This feature would be super useful for games like System Shock and quite honestly I would love to see something like this happen.
Another use for auto mode shift would be for scrolling emails. Currently I don't really know of any way to scroll them when playing in the Steam Deck, so I bound scroll wheel up and down to the left trackpad. I set the left trackpad "as dpad", and have "dpad up" and "dpad down" set to the scroll wheel. I position the cursor over the email using the right trackpad, and then I can scroll with the left trackpad. I have it set to auto-repeat using the "turbo" function so the longer I hold it the more it scrolls, I don't have to press it repeatedly.
However, in the first person view, I'd like to use the left trackpad for leaning. So dpad left would lean left and dpad right (on the trackpad) would lean right. And at that point I don't need want scroll wheel bound to "up" and "down" because if I somehow manage to hit a diagonal (happens often) then the turbo-button-scrollwheel switches me to a random gun and it sucks.
So that's two ways I could have mode shifts help in the game.
I can imagine some people would like a different controller configuration for the cyber space as well, so that would be another mode shift.
I hope this isn't too long to read and I hope this is motivated well enough for you guys to take some time out of your already obviously very busy schedule.
The game, as it stands, is a real masterpiece, and given that one of its more important selling points is that it improves on the controls of the OG, I hope you can take the extra step or two and talk to Valve about improving the controls for the Steam Deck as well. And I think if you had this brand new input feature on the Deck, then everyone who has a deck would be sure to snap it up just to try it out.
The feature could very likely be backported to older games by modders as well: people could hook into the exe's and figure out when certain UIs show up, and have hooked-in code call AnnounceModeShift(). So at this point, not just System Shock benefits, but eventually every game that modders mod or that the devs update. So the more reason for Valve to try and provide such a feature. Plus I'm pretty sure if you guys reach out to them they'll take you seriously.
Thanks a lot for reading!

2023.06.07 04:46 algusdark Help me to get the best python Neovim environment

Hi community. I've been trying to setup the ultimate python environment, trying to make it as nice as PyCharm. I'm kind of new on this and I'm using LazyVim for my vim setup.
I've been reading several posts about how to just use pyright and ruff... but I feel like there is a lot of things missing for a nicer experience. For not selecting the venv I'm using workon.
If you have something as an experienced python developer using neovim, could you share me some tips and repos on how to setup this?
Things I've tried: - ruff + pyright - I think this is ok-ish. The problem is that there are no code actions - pylsp + ruff + pyright - I think this is the best combo... but I think I'm not good at configuring it as I need to do some extra configs on lsp to remove some capabilities and to setup correctly to place nicely.
Thanks!
This is my current config: ```lua return { { "mfusseneggenvim-dap", },

2023.06.07 03:49 barftitsmcgee Wage discrimination?

So a little background story: I've been working at an auto parts store in California for almost 2 years. About nine months ago they hired a guy starting at two dollars an hour more than me. I just found out last month and told my boss I need a raise. I haven't had a raise since minimum wage went up in January. Obviously he's been dragging his feet about it. Now I was told the only reason he is paid more is because he has a child. He definitely doesn't have more experience than me. He didn't even graduate high school. I have ase certifications and a college degree. He's also 26 and I'm almost 42. Now I've spoken with a couple of people that say this might be discrimination? My question is what are my legal options?

2023.06.07 02:51 Seattleite_Sat "Spirits" and their "Biology": (Buckle up, this one's weird!)

Spirits are the least conventional lifeforms in Gnosis and the people of its worlds really don't understand what they are or how they function. As they are so highly unconventional, I'm looking for a little feedback on the core concept. I'll keep it as quick as I can, but this is a big complicated topic and spirits are weird so I may need to explain a lot.
From the Outside:
Let's pick a common spirit for an example, in fact the most common spirit species, fey. From the outside, they look like a tiny winged humanoid of some description. We'll go right to the one of the two contenders for least common of four subspecies because they'll require the least explanation, fairies. They basically look like miniature glowing humans with large butterfly wings, coming in every imaginable color for their skin although some are more common for each part than others and that means they're glowing those colors. Fey have some size-changing going on but in their smaller default form fairy women typically range from about 45-50cm and fairy men about 35-40cm in both height and wingspan, and in their larger form they go up to 1.5x scale. Spirits don't need to sleep, can if they want to and there are reasons they might even if usually only for a couple minutes to fix some recent major injury.
Most species of spirits are 75% female and fey are in that group, so let's look a bit closer at a fairy gal. The first thing you'll notice about her is that she is very colorful her surface has zero texture, but you may not notice from a distance because her surface is using artistic tricks to imitate texture without actually having it. Her various features are simplified, yet either exaggerated or understated. Her usually quite a bit of head hair is usually also a pretty loud color but it's also actually just part of her head which is one rigid piece and if this gal has long hair you'll notice it only bends at the top of the neck one time to keep the rest "hanging" where it "should be", and trying to change her hairstyle is painful and fruitless. Her jaw stretches and twists to imitate an actual joint being there but there also clearly isn't one if you look closely. Spirit hands and moreso heads, especially their eyes, are larger while their legs are slightly shorter relative to their height and their feet are tiny, meanwhile secondary and tertiary sexual characteristics are exaggerated overall but with a larger standard deviation from the average in each area between individuals to the point where they still reach 0 if less often. They're not a very convincing imitation, to put it lightly, they should be well on the "less human" side of the uncanny valley.
Spirits are regenerating shapeshifters, in the case of fey it's mostly size-changing, but all spirit sophonts also have the ability to imitate clothing, weapons and equipment even if the imitated gear is not nearly as good as the real thing. It and the body part it's on are not separate and the false gear cannot be taken off or set down except by shapeshifting it out of existence, nor can they imitate chemicals or complex machinery like the magitech in nearly all proper melee weapons, which of course means imitating any sort of ranged weapon or explosive is off the table. It also means they aren't rendering their body underneath the gear, if she's wearing a shapeshifted knee skirt and you were to look up it you'd see an opaque void the same color as the skirt which her knees are sliding freely along the surface of, there's nothing between it and where the shapeshift gear ends, everything from hem to waist currently IS the skirt. (Of course if she's wearing actual clothes this does not apply.) Same if she shapeshifts a sword into her hand, the sword and hand are a single piece so it only looks like she's holding it, like a cheap action figure. It also needn't be a sword, most hand tools can be imitated effectively, from hammers and saws to ladles and spatulas, just note that it's part of her and smacking it on things or getting it too hot will hurt even though shapeshift gear is not very sensitive.
Fey also can control the brightness of their glow or generate spotlights, generate and manipulate magnetic fields, of course fly and pretty quickly, they swim fine too which is extremely odd for fairies given their apparent butterfly wings, and all but pixies have easy if slow contact healing albeit the fairy's healing is stronger and pixies have their own benefits (stealth, sensors and a 3-day forecast). Healing is a fairy's main ability, when in water it's strengthened and in emergencies fairies can massively drain their energy reserves even to the point of depleting them in order to staunch more severe wounds than they would be able to normally, although that's something they can't do more than once or at most twice without a refill and it's still got its limits. "Already dead" is beyond those limits, "decapitated" counts if they're not real quick about it and if somebody's heart got bisected that's somebody they're not fixing, but this burst of frenzied automatic medical treatment is just the thing for some poor sap who's just taken multiple bullets to the chest and head. They're pretty good at self-repair and generally have less downtime than some fey when the poor things get severely injured very easily. (Not because they're little, being a spirit makes that difference often less than it appears, but because they're spirits.) As a side benefit, they can use their healing nodes to sneakily suction out fat deposits on contact, getting a full day's worth of calories overnight.
But what if you touch her? Well, then you'll discover her textureless surface isn't actually a surface at all. You'll start feeling resistance just before you make contact, like trying to touch like poles of two magnets. This is pretty mild, but intensifies as you go on and once your finger passes through her stomach miss fairy will scream and hit you but more importantly you'll contact something solid not far beyond it, many somethings solid spaced apart, teeny-tiny balls and stands. That's odd, so let's put on a mask with goggles and stick our face in this fairy who hopefully agreed to that but it seems unlikely on account of how much this is going to hurt. (Maybe for science. And food. ...And a hug or five or six.)
On the Inside:
What you'll find in the little lady is exactly what it felt like, many less than one millimeter thick strands connecting hundreds of millimeters-wide orb-shaped nodes and thousands more nodes no bigger around than the wires leading to them. Most of the spirit's body is empty space, covered by a gradient forcefield and projected light. These internal structures are brightly colored, in the case of fey blaze orange and notably each part of their facade is most commonly an orange/brown of various hues, brightnesses and saturations (including super dark brown or super pale orange for their pupils and sclera), but if broken open are transparent or translucent white/grey inside. For ages there was no even vaguely comparable material to the unusual lipid-derived organic stuff these nodes are made out of, but the Drachentäller invented a very similar one half a century ago called "plastic" (though only they make it right now so it's still pretty pricey). The nodes have openings on them of different types which differentiate their function, but these aren't well understood, except the biggest ones outside the core that are just storage tanks for slurries of liquid nutrients. The wires feel like normal rubber-insulated wires but super thin, but under a microscope they look to be another bioplastic and if split open will reveal themselves to actually contain both piping for transporting material between nodes and actual copper wire that carries a current too low-gauge to be powering anything so it's speculated to effectively be her nervous system.
This explains her shapeshifting, seeing as her body's not real she just needs to re-arrange her wires and nodes, alter the shape of her outer fields and the image she's projecting. To grow from 50cm to 75, she just increased the distance between her nodes by 50%, her "surface area" by 125% and her "volume" by 237.5%, her mass and weight are completely unchanged. This also explains how such giant variations can exist within one species or even subspecies, they aren't really nearly as big of a change as they externally look to be. Fairies can project light and generate powerful magnetic fields, those are also being done by her nodes, with the very projectors that create her outer fields and holographic "self" which she doesn't know isn't real unless you tell her (she probably won't believe it). It also explains why they feel pain when you attempt to penetrate their fields, for starters they think there's actual physical flesh you're pushing into except for how it visibly doesn't react like it once you've started (and that confusion's only going to make them freak out more), and it makes sense if this imitation is a defense mechanism for a pain response to exist to reduce the odds of you or them discovering what's inside or either of you being able to make sense of what little you do see.
Of course, passing through their fields doesn't always hurt, only if they're expecting it to, the field projectors will even roll inwards to create an opening if one is expected in that spot. IE she bites things by rolling her face fields inwards to "open" her "mouth", then uses them to apply pressure, but as she has no actual teeth this is blunt and often she'll need to yank at it with her entire head, neck and even engage her torso to, for example, tear a chunk off a steak and swallow it. If you were to observe this hunk of steak you'd watch it get passed by repair nodes down into the woodchipper-like opening of one of her digestive nodes in her core, where it will be broken down into proteins and lipids and sent to storage through her piping. We know that because people have in fact stuck periscopes inside spirits to see what goes on inside them. As she uses energy, you may notice a tiny bit of fine dust descending from around her, this is ash and it's all that's left of the nutrients she efficiently consumes in exorbitant amounts to power everything she does. As she repairs damage, her repair nodes can produce the plastic of her tubing her core production nodes print complex components, even required metals coming out of what she eats.
The Core:
The core is the center of a spirit's being, a series of seven dreamcatcher-looking rings large nodes and thicker wire in rings stacked front to back with cross-crossing wires notably devoid of metal instead having silica fibers and flashing lights on each node for signalling between them, making sure every one in each ring is directly connected to each other for redundancy. Here you'll find, in her notably female case, from front to back, half her reproductive system, forward core nutrient storage, forward core cognitive ring (memory and motor control nodes are scattered throughout the body), central digestive and manufacturing ring, aft core cognitive ring, aft core nutrient storage and her other ring of reproductive nodes, and notably there is lots of tubing running between rings 1, 2, 4, 6 and 7. If she was male instead both reproductive rings would be at the back as the purpose of them is different.
In a fey, any humanoid spirit really, this is in the chest where you'd expect the heart to be. Some spirits have two cores, the second will be lower down, in a humanoid it'll be in the pelvis and/or abdomen, as low as it can be at its size and still fit without blocking the leg tendrils. These nodes require more exotic materials less common in food or that are more difficult to work with and even with recycling as much as possible are usually significantly harder to repair and replace. Losing digestive and manufacturing nodes is a big hit to regeneration rate, enough that they usually start by replacing those if at all possible. The way spirits die is by receiving too much core damage, or losing too much mass overall, to the point where they don't have the manufacturing nodes to fix themselves despite all being multiple redundant, or they lack both material in storage and the functionality to go get them. If starved, they will eventually enter an inert state and be left laying as a bundle on the ground until somebody revives them or they decay which takes a very long time even though their plastic is biodegradeable as it is coated in a preservative (in this case orange) chemical that takes years to corrode and is frequently replenished during normal activity. Even then, if you go grab the bundle and drop them into a bunch of loose resources like a bowl of ground beef and fruit preserves that'll solve the lack of resources and if they didn't lose all the required nodes they'll start fixing themselves up.
Damage control and repair:
As mentioned, spirits regenerate. As also mentioned, this is an internal repair system with distinct parts performing distinct tasks, which when they are unconscious gets all of their energy and resources allowing it to work significantly faster, whether they're unconscious because they were nearly destroyed or because they decided to go lie down for a minute because they just saw their wires and nodes for the first time. You may think this could be defeated by severing a part, since they wouldn't be able to reach out and grab it, but what'll actually happen is microwaves will be emitted by the repair nodes on each end of the breach and it'll fly right back into place to get fused back together, and if a node is is destroyed that node'll be replaced a part at a time which will take longer than patching a wire and it won't be working until it's fully reconnected, but the bioplastic that makes up most of it is pretty easy to print and paint if they've got proteins and fats on hand. If she takes too much damage, though, to the point where she's at risk of being destroyed she will involuntarily bail on this entire situation, dropping her outer fields and image, curling her wires into a tight ball, coating herself in a much denser forcefield, rocketing into the distance in a direction with nobody (detected) in it and as clear of a shot as possible. This launch is very forceful, reaching hypersonic speeds in a matter of seconds before the thrust stops and she cruises ballistically to a different post code and at quickly slows to a gentle landing. (Assailants: Brace for the backblast, or it may knock you on your ass.) She is semi-conscious during this process and once she's landed will fully lose consciousness in order to dedicate all her energy to self-repair until she's either back to 100% or as close as she's getting without getting up and finding something to eat. Significant damage to her core, whether it's that "enough core cables are cut to defeat their redundancy" or "a core node is destroyed", will usually result in her blasting off right away, as will her ending up in a situation where destruction otherwise seems unavoidable. Take a moment to absorb the implications of this while you imagine how much worse her being swallowed by a giant frog or something is going to work out for it than her even if she has to clean that mess up. Spirits actually dying due to violence is a rarity because of their remarkable ability to bail in the nick of time, although it does happen. They get hit with a 7-ton naval shell they're absolutely donezo, but dropping them in a volcano won't work because they'll blast off into the sky.
Reproduction and Development:
In her core, this fairy has two rings dedicated to reproduction, one at the very front and one at the very back. These are rings of dedicated manufacturing, wire-printing and assembly nodes, which create and keep in stock a set of redundant nodes, enough to make 1/2 of a new spirit minus their core. If we look in the chest of Sir Mothwing next to her he has none of the assembly or wire-printing nodes but he's got a bunch of dedicated manufacturing nodes in two rings at the back of his core and between them is kept the fruits of their labour: All the nodes for one entire spare core, in addition to half the nodes needed for the rest of a spirit stored stored between the reproductive rings and the back of the spirit which these nodes also manufactured. All they need to do is keep their cores together so a single opening through both their fields can allow them to interact. The actual internal process is unconscious, any activity that'll align their cores and press their bodies together will do the job. They mimic humans generally, but they don't always know how humans do it so this might just be hugging.
The spirit man will pass his spare parts into the spirit woman's chest, one at a time as she needs them, that's his entire job in the actual reproductive process. Granted, those are hard to replace parts, especially all those core cognitive and manufacturing nodes, so he can't do this nearly as often as she can and that puts the bottleneck on the side of the less common sex, giving them a slow reproductive rate. (Then again, they're massive resource hogs for their size, have indefinite lifespans and are hard to kill. Maybe slow reproduction's a good thing long-term.) As for her part she'll be externally paralyzed and unresponsive while her unconscious works as fast as it can making wire and connecting these parts together. In the mean time, he'll be semi-conscious, cuddled as close as humanly possible, only able to move if it's strictly necessary (if a coyote's wondering if they're edible he can go deal with that real quick and come back). The rest of the time while this process is going on, both of them will be tripping balls. No, that's not doing it justice, they're having a life-changing psychedelic experience. Why is unknown, only they're seeing the same things, communicating somehow and by the end they usually claim to "feel" the newborn's presence before they're born, if their estimates are right seemingly a couple hours after the core's done being assembled. Some think it's how the newborn's consciousness is formed, some think it's how all the child's various traits superficial and meaningful alike are determined, some think it's a deep spiritual experience meant to make them reflect on and prepare for the life-changing thing they're doing bringing another tinier person into the world, some think it's just meant to keep their conscious mind entertained while their unconscious does all the actual work. It's also notably intensely euphoric. Regardless, after about one day in 5d technicolor dreamland, the new infant spirit will be assembled and will exit the mother however makes sense to her. They may just pop right out of her chest as a little rolled-up ball, unfurl and form their facade mid-air before any of them wake up, only provided nobody's there to witness it (as far as any of them know).
The even littler one will as usual typically resemble hehis parents in many ways except often with several completely random minor variations like a ginger and a blue-haired parent may have a violet-haired child and have no idea why even if most of the time most of their traits seem to be inherited from their parents. Mutations that large shouldn't be occurring that often with biology as we know it, but this is not biology as we know it. Their sex is determined by how their mother assembles their core, whether they left room and connections at the front and back (female) or all at the back (male), and their facade matches their core in what may be a "natural" metaphor. As the father donates the core nodes the child will always be their father's subspecies, in fact this is how subspecies are classified because it's that reliable. ...And the exception is there are two species of hermaphroditic spirits who all have one male and one female core and each parent provides one of each and this means that if they are of different species you get actual hybrids, for example an ant myrmidon queen and a bee myrmidon queen make a wasp myrmidon queen with one ant core and one bee core. (Myrmidon queens look like little half-meter anthropomorphic insect queens, they make even tinier autonomous frameworks called "workers", "soldiers" and so on who are full-fledged sophonts. They have a limited cast of minions, a bee queen has six workers, four soldiers and two drones whose minds, memories and personalities are backed up every night in the queen's caboose in case they get smashed and they have to print a new copy. They usually don't understand the original is actually permanently dead and has not come back.)
A newborn fairy is already about half the mass of their parents despite looking externally like the infant they are and being the right size relative to them. The extra weight goes into thicker wire and fitting just as many forcefield and repair nodes into the way tinier body. At birth both sexes are always of identical actual mass, even if there's an apparent size difference, and will not appear to age externally despite accumulating actual mass as they go until suddenly overnight they appear to age years all at once complete with a change in their otherwise permanent hairstyle that seems to be subconsciously or even unconsciously decided and only usually has any continuity with the last style. This will first happen at 2, then at 5, then at 10. Their reproductive tract will grow in during their equivalent of puberty, until then there's just empty space, and even once it's there (age 14-16) it'll need just as much time to generate the parts as will be needed between kids later. If the kid's a girl that's only about six weeks, but for boys it's about two years, notably roughly coinciding with one of their overnight metamorphoses episodes when they turn 17, the previous having been at age 10, and they will suddenly go from looking like a kid in their pre or early teens to somebody vaguely in their late teens or early twenties, as they usually appear to be about the middle of the age group they're in, but it is while they are asleep on their exact birthday that these visible changes occur, all at once, exactly at midnight if they're already out. There is no upper limit on their age and they do have more changes later, but after the "adult metamorphoses" at 17 they stop gaining actual mass (except they can always make more storage nodes if they need to) and their final visible change is at 82 at which point they look about a hundred years old indefinitely.
Combat Performance and the Framework:
Spirits aren't very strong, tend to be sent flying to the next county over from the next county over with one swing of a sword and their nutrient stores aren't much for how fast they can burn through them. That itty bitty fairy eats as much as a human toddler who appears to be several times her size and is many times her mass. Most of that normal operating cost is her facade, its fields and holograms are not cheap and she's not nearly as dimly glowly as other spirits even if turns it down as far as it'll go she will illuminate dim surroundings rather than only truly dark ones so that's more energy spent. All of that's coming from food eaten, and although their metabolism is more efficient and only leaves a fine ash she's still eating several times her actual mass on a daily basis. She also only has at most a couple days of nutrients stored, far less than if she spends that time, say, on a battlefield repairing damage to herself and others and shooting electro-lasers out of her wizard's staff in which case she'll be eating nearly as much as a physical folk-sized caster and more than any of the non magic-using soldiers. Thankfully, all spirits are omnivorous and not super picky about what they eat. Fat's got the most calories for them to use, sugar's the quickest to burn, carbs are sugars with extra steps and they need protein for their bioplastics that's most of what they'll need. They need other organic materials and minerals sometimes too, sometimes they'll eat rocks and even they can't have no explanation to give, but anything even vaguely edible to the least discerning and most voracious of goats will work just fine for them and they don't seem to be subject to poison or disease. (Corrosion is a different matter.)
They're really resistant to projectiles, they're mostly empty space after all a bullet could potentially go right through them and hit nothing, their forcefield does well against explosions, heat and corrosion, nor is cold really very effective, but a sword with good edge alignment faces comparatively little resistance from the forcefields and will cut them right in half straight through the core. Also, blunt impacts work fairly well, as although the force transferred through the fields is distributed between multiple projector nodes an impact can still jolt them hard enough to snap the wires they're connected to, it's not like they're spread across the entire facing side of the spirit's body like a blast wave and the forcefield is good at deflective most of the force of a blast wave away. This amounts in total to a significant melee weakness, especially since regeneration takes time and melee combat tends to be more short-lived than ranged combat. Although they are very hard to actually kill and all have interesting abilities, they tend to lose fights with physical sophonts pretty hard and may have issues with creatures that a physical sophont would demolish, since physical sophonts are stronger than they are, are capable of faster reaction times and can dish out a hit after taking one in a way a spirit won't because they'll probably be in the stratosphere. Of course, all of these people are probably wearing armor and that complicates this entire subject considerably, as does the fact that direct one on one duels are not exactly common.
Frameworks are their built-in attempt to make up for this, vaguely resembling a "wicker man" in the shape of one specific form of theirs complete with any and all shapeshifted gear as actual solid pieces. It's actually made bioplastics and glass as usual with them and it's articulated, it's got nutrient storage tanks, more forcefield and motor-function nodes, more holographic nodes too so their appearance gets more detailed (her hair even becomes a seperate piece from her head and flexible along its length) and they generally look more life-like with slightly less exaggerated proportions. Once in a framework, they can't shapeshift until they get back out, but while they're in it they're more protected, faster, stronger and have room for considerably greater reserves. They're both too metabolically expensive to manufacture and take up too much space to keep one of every possible gear variation, and while frameworks can be re-configured this is also metabolically expensive despite recycling as much as possible and being way cheaper than a whole new framework, so usually frameworks use shapeshift gear only if absolutely necessary even though framework gear is much more effective than normal shapeshifted gear between stronger fields and backing them up with various plastic and glass. Instead, spirits who have call for them tend to cap out at one framework for each of their major forms and not waste resources or space making more. Little miss fairy probably has a 50cm and 75cm framework, for example, and if she's not in danger often they'll last her until she outgrows them, and even then she can recycle them to mitigate the cost of the new ones. They last despite being made of bioplastic because thankfully, the framework is coated in a preservative coating just like her insides are that takes anywhere from months to decades to decay and is constantly being replenished when she's in the framework, it'll also take about as long for the bioplastic to degrade, and it can still be saved for a little while because her own repair system can also repair her framework. Of course, when you compare plastic and glass to actual armor and weapons it comes up short, but once forcefields are added to the mix... They still do in the balance, but only because the real armor and weapons can have internal magitech or be a different kind of weapon that couldn't be replicated, the framework weapons and armor tend to directly deal more damage and provide more protection by weight although that's "more protection" compared to lighter armor and "lighter weight" to denser armor.
What the IU Meat-People Think:
As you may have guessed, a common early "hypothesis" was that spirits were ethereal beings and their internals and frameworks were believed to be some sort of congealed ectoplasm and their connection to the corporeal realm. That belief died pretty hard when they were clearly reproducing, except to the kind of religious nutcase to whom reality is always irrelevant. Actual scholars who study things that exist are currently arguing as to whether to settle on "mechanical lifeform", "semi-physical lifeform", "holographic lifeform", or something like that except they all seem to think only their suggested term is acceptable and everybody else is WRONG BECAUSE (17 paragraph diatribe here). Still, they're at least seen by the scientific community as being an extremely bizarre lifeform. You might think they'd have a little issue accepting them as a lifeform because of all the plastic and metal wiring, but there's one important background detail I should mention: Spirits first came from the Otherlands.
In the Otherlands of west Sohei, meat grows on the ground, plants get up and walk around, animals come from spores, giant clonal colonies of sedentary animals grow throughout forests seeping caustic sludge, meteors sometimes fall from the sky followed by crystals that forge themselves mecha made of the ossified remains of what died in the blast, you get in too deep and all electronic sensors are jammed, electroreception is hit with a signal so overwhelming the sense goes completely dead to keep the creature from ripping its sensory organs out, concrete buildings grow on their own by millimeters per day, random paved roads with painted lines exist and change shape so slowly you don't notice until you're hopelessly lost, usually after running into a vertical loop or something unreasonable like that which those among us overly prone to antropomorphising might attribute to spite, sometimes broken glass falls from the sky, you get giant lightning storms where the strikes are so powerful they produce enough ionizing radiation to create a secondary electromagnetic pulse, the wind sounds like an unintelligible modulating electronic tone, people swear the clouds are watching them.... My point; Spirits are only debatably the strangest thing coming out of that place, and they're definitely not the most artificial-seeming thing that seems to be occurring there without outside intervention. At this point the answer to "Could spirits be natural creatures?" is "Uh... Oh I don't know, why the hell not?" or sometimes "Insufficient data; Please define the term 'natural' within the context of The Otherlands.".
But what do YOU meat-people think of them? (And what term would you choose to describe them?)

2023.06.07 02:47 morgendonner [USA-MD] [H] Lots of Console + Games for Genesis, SegaCD, SNES, PS2, PS3, GameCube, Wii, PSP [W] PayPal

I'm moving and looking to downsize my collection. I can only handle selling in lots, no piece meal single items. Everything is priced at a discount compared to the value of all of the individual items. Prices are negotiable.
Condition: With the exception of the Sega 32X and Xbox 360, every console and game has been individually tested and confirmed to be working. The Sega 32X I'm not sure if it's broken or if I'm just not connecting it correctly. The 360 power adapter needs replacing, so I cannot confirm if it will work otherwise. The PSP works but the disc tray is finicky and can pop open easily on its own. Controllers are in a range of condition, some are very used and not in the best shape.
Photos: Photo gallery link. If you want photos of a specific set, let me know and I will try and take care of that.
Location / Shipping: If buyer is in the DC, VA, MD, or possibly NJ/PA/DE areas, can meet in person to swap. Otherwise, buyer pays shipping.

If somebody takes it all that remains at once, I'll sell the remainder for $2000 + shipping.
