2023.06.07 07:46 stayclassypeople The 1982-83 Bowl Season
This is the 9th post in a series going over the bowl seasons from 1974-1997. Each year I'm examining the bowls with national title implications and the teams competing for the #1 ranking. If you want to catch up on prior seasons, check out the link to the master post as well!

Setting the Stage
Team | Record | AP | Coaches |
Georgia | 11-0 | 1 | 1 (34) |
Penn St | 10-1 | 2 | 2 (3) |
Nebraska | 11-1 | 3 | 3 (3) |
SMU | 10-0-1 | 4 | 4 |
*Nebraska was granted a 12th regular season game to play Hawaii at the end of the season.
Important Games: - Sept 6th: #7 Georgia avenged last years loss to #11 Clemson, 13-7.
- Sept 25: #8 Penn St defeats #2 Nebraska 27-24.
- Oct 9th: #3 Penn St lost at #4 Alabama, 21-42
- Nov 20th: SMU tied Arkansas in its final game of the season, 17-17.
- November 26th: #2 Penn St defeated #5 Pitt (9-1), 19-10
As the last unbeaten in college football, SEC champ #1 Georgia, controlled their path to win a 2nd consensus national title in 3 years. Just win the Sugar bowl and there is no argument who is #1. Penn State was #2 in both polls and accepted a bid to the Sugar creating a de facto national title game vs the Dawgs. #3 Nebraska and #4 SMU were essentially boxed out of the title race. Penn St beat Nebraska in the regular season (thanks in part due a controversial call), meaning that the Polls would almost certainly go with Penn St #1 if both teams won their bowl games. As for SMU, despite having a 0 in the loss column, it was unlikely they would leapfrog the Nittany Lions in the polls as well. I don't have this sourced, but looking at each team's resumes, it appears the pollsters valued Penn State's strength of schedule, which included ranked wins over Pitt, Nebraska and West Virginia, whereas SMU only beat 1 ranked team all season and tied the other. Additionally, if both teams won their bowl, Penn States' win over #1 Georgia would only further separate each team's resumes.
The Bowls
The Cotton Bowl #4 SMU vs #6 Pittsburgh (Jan 1st 1:30PM EST) As mentioned above, SMU's title hopes were slim, but as we all know, voters can be fickle. At a minimum, they would likely need to route, Pitt, have the Huskers lose to LSU and have Penn St beat Georgia in a sloppy game. Coincidentally, SMU found themselves in a sloppy game of their own. Neither team scored in the first half. Pitt went up 3-0 early in the 3rd, but SMU countered with an early 4th quarter TD. Pitt drove deep into SMU territory late, but QB Dan Marino threw a game sealing interception in the end zone.
Orange Bowl #3 Nebraska vs #13 LSU (Jan 1st, 8PM EST) The Huskers found themselves in a similar situation to SMU. There hopes were arguably slimmer given PSU beat them head to head. But maybe, just maybe a route of LSU would make the voters forget that. Once again, like SMU, they didn't get the style points they needed. The Huskers trailed for much of the game, and were down 17-7 in the 3rd, but rallied with 2 TDs to take a 21-17 lead. They hold on for a 21-20 victory.
Sugar Bowl The stage was set for a highly anticipated showdown of #1 vs #2. Georgia was led by Heisman trophy winner, Herschel Walker, and Penn St by future NFL qb, Todd Blackledge. Penn St led 7-3 after the 1st then raced to a 20-3 lead in the 2nd before Georgia stopped the bleeding with a TD to make it 20-10 PSU at the half. Georgia started with the ball in the 3rd and double dipped with another TD to cut it to 17-20. Penn St went up 10 with a 47 yard passing TD in the 4th. Georgia would again cut it to one score with a late 4th quarter TD, however, Penn St ran out the clock on the ensuing possession to hold on for a 27-23 win. After 15 years with the program, Joe Pa had was on the precipice of his first national title.
Final Results
Team | record | AP | Coaches |
Penn State | 11-1 | 1 (44) | 1 (33) |
SMU | 11-0-1 | 2 (9) | 2 (4) |
Nebraska | 12-1 | 3 (2) | 3 |
Georgia | 11-1 | 4 | 4 |
The final polls did have a mild surprise in hand, but the drama was limited to SMU jumping Nebraska for #2. Penn St was a clear cut #1 in both polls. Although Husker fans are still salty about that regular season game this day, you can't deny how impressive this Nittany Lions team was. They finished with wins over the #3, #4, and #9 teams in the final Polls en route to coach Joe Paterno delivering the program it's first national title.
Final note: Bear Bryant would retire at the end of the 82 season. His final game was a 21-15 Liberty Bowl win over Illinois on December 29th. He would pass away less than a month later due to a heart attack at the age of 69. In his 25 years, he won or shared 6 national titles as the Tide's head coach and 323 overall career wins as a coach.

2023.06.07 02:47 morgendonner [USA-MD] [H] Lots of Console + Games for Genesis, SegaCD, SNES, PS2, PS3, GameCube, Wii, PSP [W] PayPal
I'm moving and looking to downsize my collection. I can only handle selling in lots,
no piece meal single items. Everything is priced at a discount compared to the value of all of the individual items. Prices are negotiable.
Condition: With the exception of the Sega 32X and Xbox 360, every console and game has been individually tested and confirmed to be working. The Sega 32X I'm not sure if it's broken or if I'm just not connecting it correctly. The 360 power adapter needs replacing, so I cannot confirm if it will work otherwise. The PSP works but the disc tray is finicky and can pop open easily on its own. Controllers are in a range of condition, some are very used and not in the best shape.
Photos: Photo gallery link. If you want photos of a specific set, let me know and I will try and take care of that.
Location / Shipping: If buyer is in the DC, VA, MD, or possibly NJ/PA/DE areas, can meet in person to swap. Otherwise, buyer pays shipping.
If somebody takes it all that remains at once, I'll sell the remainder for $2000 + shipping.

Fucking Joe Flacco. The only AFC North QB to beat the GOAT in the playoffs.
I just realized this. Ben never did it. He could never lead the Steelers past Tom Brady in the postseason. He failed. Every time. I’m a Steelers fan. Trust me, I know.
Fucking goofy Flacco though. Beats Brady and wins a ring 2 weeks later.
It’s fitting. Really.
Edit: I’m actually watching that Super Bowl right now. It’s what made me realize this. Jacoby Jones just ran it back at the start of the second half.
You can tell how that 49ers team wasn’t ready for a match of AFC North football.
Edit: annnnddddddd there’s the blackout.

2023.06.06 05:00 KirkHammettJigsaw Heyman Classic IV Qualifiers: The First Days of Disco!
| Welcome to the first round of the Heyman Classic! We’re live from the place often credited as disco’s birthplace, David Mancuso’s “The Loft”, right on 647 Broadway! This insane tournament has sixteen of the finest names in our sport, and we kick off the Age of Disco with seven incredible contests tonight! Now, before we jump in, I must remind you that while the rest of the tournament will be under double elimination rules, the first round is single elimination, essentially qualifiers. You lose, you’re out. The Loft. That’s My Eye, I Don’t Know You! British Rounds: Code Blue vs. Jay Castle Our one and only non-Heyman match of the evening! Jay Castle and Code Blue both have Heyman Classic matches, against Travis Crowley and T.M. Imran respectively, but both are taking place at WarZone. So, these two rivals are free to face off tonight. Jay Castle, desperate to put down Code Blue once and for all and usurp him, as they sit at 1-1 in their series. Code Blue, set on revenge against the man that took half of his vision away from him. Code Blue lamented not being able to use a closed fist punch on Jay Castle in their last Pure Rules contest, and Jay Castle is a skilled Pure competitor. How will all of these factors contribute to this British Rounds match? Prompt: Book a Nigel McGuinness return run (Min/Max Three Parts of 1000 words each) Two Man Sound: Desmond Caid vs. Sebastian King Two Man Sound were pioneers of Belgian Disco, but if you were to ask FBE competitors to identify which duo among our ranks would be called Two Man Sound, everybody would say Desmond Caid and Sebastian King. With Speak of the Devil and The Abortion Clinic being this place’s two auditory serials, this battle doesn’t just determine who advances to the Heyman Classic’s second round, it determines who’s the best podcaster in FBE. Will The Devil speak of victory, or will he be coat-hangered into oblivion? Prompt: Book the Blackpool Combat Club feuding with a faction of your choosing (Max One Part) Going Through These Changes: Misery vs. Nate Matthews While Joe Simon’s lyrics on “Going Through These Changes” don’t exactly fit this situation, the title couldn’t be more accurate. On one side of this matchup, we’ve got Nate Matthews, the ultimate OG, the man who became Grand Slam Champion in just seven months. He’s done almost everything there is to do here. On the other side is the newest competitor in the Heyman Classic, a recent Junior Grad, and former Junior Ace, Misery. This is old school vs. new gen at its finest. Will Nate Matthews keep the torch firmly in his grasp, or will Misery forcefully take it from him? Prompt: Book a current World Champion joining a different promotion (Max One Part) Blood and Honey: Ethan Fadely vs. Logan Wright Amanda Lear’s 1976 disco classic, “Blood and Honey”, is a tale of torturous love. That couldn’t be further from how the competitors in this match feel about each other, as there’s no love lost, but the title describes them to a tee. Blood, the evil, backstabbing snake of a man, Ethan Fadely. The Heyman-Classic winning Summer of Roses turned to an Autumn of Thorns, and an entire summer later, the roses have died. On the other side, Honey, an FBE Tag Team Champion, beloved by the fanbase. The Aether Aces vs. The Ark. Opposite ends of the spectrum, opposite ends of a feud still burning bright, but they have the same goal in mind: advancing to Round Two. Prompt: Book a wrestler winning a championship for the first time (Max One Part) Give It Up: Hunter Maguire vs. Inferno Give It Up is one of the most relevant disco songs, even to this day, as it has become a chant for soccefootball clubs all across the United Kingdom. There’s a chance that a young Inferno once sat high up in the cheap seats singing along with his countrymen, before he became the bastard of a World Champion that we have today. However, when an Irish team defeats an English one, the song is often mockingly co-opted (Case in point, the recent “Lizzie’s in a Box” chants). There’s a good chance that Hunter Maguire has pinched his nose and sang a vulgar variation at Londoners and Brummies, laughing his ass off. Only one of them will be singing the celebratory tune tonight, though. Which competitor will seize the opportunity, and which one will Give It Up? Prompt: Book a feud ending in a stipulation match that hasn’t been done in WWE/AEW/NJPW for at least five years (Max One Part) Rock The Boat: Cactus Mike vs. Kaze Tanaka The boat will be rocked, but will it tip over? Cactus Mike and Kaze Tanaka are stablemates in one of the most tight-knit factions to ever grace an FBE canvas. The Ark has not sunk yet, but one of these two competitors will, unfortunately, have to walk the plank right out of the Heyman Classic. Will Kaze Tanaka, former FBE World Heavyweight Champion, put down one of his best friends for a second round berth, or will perennial babyface Cactus Mike pull off the victory and set sail in this storied tourney? Prompt: Book a star from your opponent’s company in your company (Kaze: WCW, Mike: WWF) (Max One Part) Rise: Capital STEEZ vs. JOHN “Rise” is one of the most famous instrumental disco tracks ever. Herb Alpert’s masterpiece was tremendous on his own, but was made even more popular when Brooklyn’s Biggie Smalls sampled it in one of his biggest songs, “Hypnotize”. JOHN has a rise of his own, and that’s The RISE, the faction that he reps. However, former Heyman Classic winner Capital STEEZ is trying to pull it off again, and when he’s at his best, he’s near impossible to stop. Will JOHN pull off a Miracle in Manhattan, getting past the four-time champ and RISING to the top of the FBE mountain, or will STEEZ, less than an hour away from his home borough of Brooklyn, pull a Biggie and turn somebody else’s “Rise” into his own? Prompt: Book a wrestler in an era of WWF/WWE that they did not participate in (No Part Limit) The music stops on Friday, June 9th, at 11 PM EST. No getting off the dance floor until your bookings are posted. submitted by KirkHammettJigsaw to FantasyBookingElite [link] [comments] |
2023.06.06 04:57 MaIorbas Defending the Draft 2023: Los Angeles Chargers
Preface: There’s really no way to look back at the Chargers’ 2022 season without starting at the end. The team blew a 27-0 lead to the Jaguars in the wild card round in what can only be described as the peak of decades of cruelty by the football gods directed at the Chargers. In a year that began with Super Bowl aspirations thanks to an extremely talented on-paper roster, and included a regular season of injury after injury after injury (Justin Herbert, Rashawn Slater, Keenan Allen, Mike Williams, etc.), the finale could not have been more crushing. Criticism and ridicule has rained down on head coach Brandon Staley and offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi,
and the latter was promptly fired at the end of the season to the rejoicing of fans everywhere. But now we begin, again. The Super Bowl hopes are very much alive. The roster saw very few changes in free agency as the front office and coaching staff clearly believe the failure of the 2022 season was generally not an issue with the assembled players. But there is a much higher sense of urgency this year, and it’s not an exaggeration to say the team is going “all in” on the final cheap year of Justin Herbert’s rookie deal. Contracts have been structured in a way that will force significant cuts after the 2023 season just to get the team to salary cap compliance. This year may be do-or-die for both Tom Telesco and Brandon Staley.
Free Agency Recap
Losses:
G Matt Feiler, LB Drue Tranquill, EDGE Kyle Van Noy, QB Chase Daniel, CB Bryce Callahan, WR Deandre Carter, S Nasir Adderley, LB Troy Reeder, DL Breiden Fehoko, WR Michael Bandy, OT Storm Norton Five starters on this list: Feiler, Tranquill, Callahan, Carter, and Adderley. Letting Drue Tranquill leave is by far the most controversial decision here, especially since he ended up going to the Chiefs. He played very well last year, but seems like the idea here is that he was a factor in the defense’s struggle against the run. Feiler was a disaster last season after a great 2021, and Jamaree Salyer should be an immediate upgrade. Callahan is still a free agent and a reunion is not out of the question. Van Noy was great as a fill-in when Bosa was injured, but the team wants to get younger at the position. Carter was a quiet signing who outperformed his contract and provided much needed depth but again, too old. Adderley was benched in the season finale and then retired. The rest were backups and rotational players.
Additions: LB Eric Kendricks, DL Nick Williams That’s it, that’s the list. Eric Kendricks steps in as the starter next to Kenneth Murray who he can hopefully help mentor into being a good linebacker. And theoretically, he will be an upgrade in run defense over Drue Tranquill. Williams was signed after the draft as insurance for the injured Austin Johnson and Otito Ogbonnia. He may not make the team. The Chargers used most of the rest of their cap space re-signing free agents like Trey Pipkins, Morgan Fox, and Donald Parham. They still have about $12.5M to work with, pending the upcoming Justin Herbert mega-deal.
Draft Needs
WR: The trio of Keenan Allen, Mike Williams, and Josh Palmer is one of the best in the league. However, with their contracts, there’s really no chance Allen and Williams will be Chargers in 2024. This group also lacks a speed element.
EDGE: Similar to WR, the starting duo of Bosa and Mack is elite but they are expensive and getting older. The depth behind them is just Chris Rumph.
TE: Gerald Everett is solid but on the last year of his deal. Donald Parham has potential but can’t stay healthy. Tre’ McKitty is a blocking TE who isn’t a very good blocker.
CB: JC Jackson is an enormous question mark, both from a health and performance standpoint. Michael Davis is a free agent after 2023. Ja’Sir Taylor is penciled in as the starting slot corner after very limited playing time last year.
OL: This is the strongest starting five the Chargers have had in a decade but the depth behind them both inside and out is weak.
LB: Eric Kendricks and Kenneth Murray will start, but Murray is auditioning to be on the team next year and Kendricks is old. The depth behind them is just Nick Niemann and Amen Ogbongbemiga.
S: JT Woods was a 2022 3rd round pick but barely played in 2022. Alohi Gilman stepped up when needed, but relying on him to start is risky.
RB: Austin Ekeler requested a trade, and even though it looked very unlikely to happen, the team needs to think about life after him in 2024. Neither Josh Kelley or Isaiah Spiller have shown they can handle a full workload.
KPR: With Deandre Carter’s departure, the team has no one with real return experience.
The Draft
1.21: Quentin Johnston - WR, TCU In hindsight, this pick should have been more obvious. The Chargers have been very strict about their size thresholds for wide receivers over the years, and despite countless debates about Johnston vs Zay Flowers vs Jordan Addison, the big guy from TCU won out. This was an immediately controversial pick among fans as many believed the speedy Flowers or the crafty Addison would be more suited to filling the biggest need in this position group: speed and separation. But while Johnston may not be your traditional deep threat, his game speed and GPS tracking data suggest a more dynamic skillset than he showed at the combine. And one area where he does beat those two guys that was probably overlooked as a need: run after catch ability. Johnston was elite at that in college, and that looks to be his primary role for the Chargers. New OC Kellen Moore will use him like he did Ceedee Lamb in Dallas. And since he will start the year at number three on the depth chart at best, he won’t be under pressure to carry the offense as a rookie while he learns from the veterans in front of him.
2.54: Tuli Tuipulotu - EDGE, USC After WR, the Chargers’ clear next biggest need was at EDGE and Tuli was the consensus best available. The team has also shown a penchant for drafting local kids from USC and UCLA over the last few years. He was extremely productive in his final season in college where he put up 13.5 sacks playing both on the edge and the interior. In the draft process, many people questioned if he would bulk up to be a full time DT or slim down to play the EDGE. It ended up being the latter as he weighed 266lbs at the combine. Tuli will provide valuable depth behind Bosa and Mack as a rookie, while also having the opportunity to play inside on passing downs like he did in college.
3.85: Daiyan Henley - LB, Washington State The Chargers lost two linebackers to free agency: Drue Tranquill and Troy Reeder. Tranquill was the team’s best coverage linebacker, and Reeder was key depth while also being a core special teams player. Enter Daiyan Henley, who could fill both of those roles by himself. With Kenneth Murray likely off the team in 2024, Henley has the opportunity to earn a starting job over the course of the season. He is a recent convert to the linebacker position and there is still much room for growth. At the very least, he will be an immediate special teams contributor. Staley and Telesco both raved about his prowess in that phase of the game after picking him.
*
4.125: Derius Davis - WR, TCU * Another TCU receiver! This pick was definitely a surprise, as many people projected him to be a late day 3 pick. But the Chargers coaching staff said after the draft that they believed he was the best return man available, and that they wanted to draft a starter in the 4th round. Davis was indeed one of the best returners in the country at TCU, and also can add some juice on offense even if he ends up limited to a gadget role. Either way, here’s some killer speed for the Chargers offense.
5.156: Jordan McFadden - OL, Clemson In the last few drafts, the Chargers have shown a lot of love for late round tackle-to-guard converts. Jamaree Salyer was the steal of the 2022 draft in the sixth round. McFadden played both tackle and guard in college on both sides of the line, and some scouts believe he may even be able to play some center. For the Chargers he will compete with Brenden Jaimes for the swing guard role, and maybe even push Foster Sarrell to be the swing tackle. Key depth for a position group that needed it.
6.200: Scott Matlock - DL, Boise State Matlock is a solid run defender with some pass rush upside who will get to learn behind a strong trio of veteran starters. And with Austin Johnson and Otito Ogbonnia both rehabbing major knee injuries, he may end up seeing some decent playing time this season. I’m very intrigued by his upside, and Staley has a good track record of getting good play from late round DTs.
7.239: Max Duggan - QB, TCU The Los Angeles Horned Frogs are ready to take the NFL by storm in 2023 (hopefully to face the Philadelphia Bulldogs in a championship rematch). The Chargers historically have carried three QBs on the active roster, and with only two signed going into the draft, it seemed like a strong possibility they would pick one. So here’s Max Duggan, who despite leading TCU to the Natty was generally not loved by scouts. He has a ton of athletic ability but the finer points of playing QB need to be worked on. There is absolutely potential to be a long term backup to Justin Herbert though, if he can beat out Easton Stick.
Notable UDFAs Jerrod Clark - DL, Coastal Carolina: Most people expected Clark to be drafted, and the Chargers gave him a lot of money for a UDFA. I would not be surprised at all to see him make the roster as an additional run defender.
Cam Jones - CB, Ohio State: Another guy who could have been drafted, there are depth spots at corner up for grabs and Jones is an intriguing option.
Tiawan Mullen - CB, Indiana: Mullen used to have a pretty high draft stock but fell hard in the process. The Chargers are thin at slot corner and he could earn a role.
Mikel Jones - LB, Syracuse: There’s a wide open competition for ILB5 that will most likely be decided by special teams.

2023.06.05 15:17 stonescoldtakes NFL Update: 05/29/2023 - 06/04/2023 - OTAs Week 2!!!
Layout: — Individual Team News + Stone’s Cold Takes
— Miscellaneous/Other NFL News
— Restaurant of the Week - Pittsburgh
Arizona Cardinals: - RB James Conner likes being an underdog
- HC Jonathan Gannon wanted to move forward with who was all in on the team when asked about DeAndre Hopkins
- Gained $4.21m in cap space after June 1st deadline
- QB Clayton Tune could work his way into a starting spot
- Potentially interested in moving on from LB Isaiah Simmons
This team cannot unload folks fast enough it seems. They are now looking to potentially move on from LB Isaiah Simmons who in many folks eyes has not lived up to the hype from the draft. WE shall see if they can get anything for him if they do decide to move on. The storyline I am most interested in watching this year here is first how long Kyler Murray will be out and second how rookie QB Clayton Tune is developing. It seems like they took him so they could try out a young QB in the interim while Murray is working his way back. Apparently thus far he has been doing well in OTAs.
Atlanta Falcons: - Team expects TE Kyle Pitts to be ready for season opener
- Ditching gradient uniforms and will wear throwbacks 3 times
Not too much news from the Falcons but many will be excited to hear about Kyle Pitts expected to be back for the season opener. Hopefully this is the year he can really break out but a lot will depend on the QB Desmond Ridder actually being able to throw him the ball unlike the past quarterbacks he has had who have not made things easy.
Baltimore Ravens: - WR Zay Flowers is impressing with his route running capabilities early on
Good news here because receiver seems to be a position where the Ravens have struggled to get good production. With new OC Todd Monken that should start to change and with an added emphasis on the passing game it inevitably should change as more throws are made.
Buffalo Bills: - Rumored that QB Josh Allen will be featured on the cover of Madden
- Signed:
- DT Ed Oliver to a 4-year $68m extension with $45m guaranteed
- WR Marcell Ateman
- OT Brandon Shell
- Supposedly out on WR DeAndre Hopkins
- Expect Edge Von Miller to be back for the season opener
Great move here signing Ed Oliver to his extension. He is a key piece of that d-line and helps hold them together. I personally don’t believe they or really any of the other teams that have said they are out on DeAndre Hopkins actually are. To me it appears more to be a message saying they are not going to be paying him the money that WR Odell Beckham got earlier this offseason. Only time will tell. Great news for the team that EDGE Von Miller should be back by the season opener. Personally though I would take my time with him and would be overly cautious to make sure he is fully healthy. Hopefully that is by week 1!
Carolina Panthers: - QB Bryce Young is already impressing with his poise
- Plan to use some Deebo Samuel-like packages for WR Laviska Shenault
The hype appears to be real for the Bryce Young but it is what every team says about their rookie quarterback who is a top pick so hard to decipher how folks are actually feeling. I am excited about how Frank Reich will use WR Laviska Shenault because I have always been impressed with his athletic ability and expected him to break out more. It seems this could have been the type of role he has been waiting for.
Chicago Bears: - Have other sites in mind potentially for a new stadium besides Arlington
- QB Justin Fields donated $10,000 to the special olympics
- WR DJ Moore has been performing well in OTAs
- Stadium is at risk after property tax assessment
A lot of news around the future stadium of the Bears. It appeared a couple weeks ago that everything was moving along as planned and no issues had come up. This week there was nothing but concerns and problems. I wonder if these are all real storylines or if it is something they are using to try and negotiate more with the government to get help with the stadium. In more football news is appears that WR DJ Moore and QB Justin Fields are enjoying working together and developing a good connection. This is important to give Fields someone he can trust like he did his receivers at Ohio State.
Cincinnati Bengals: - WR Tyler Boyd feels they one-upped the Chiefs signing Orlando Brown Jr.
- DE Sam Hubbard excited for what’s next this season
- Will hold joint practices with the Packers
Not too much football news here but they appear to be ready to take on the Chiefs again this year and make a deep playoff run. Also, it appears at this point that the team will keep RB Joe Mixon based on comments from the team and HC Zac Taylor. This offense per usual will be an exciting one to watch.
Cleveland Browns: - Strong possibility that WR DeAndre Hopkins ends up here
- QB Deshaun Watson is working hard to recruit him
- DC Jim Schwartz sees a benefit in d-linemen playing fewer snaps to stay fresh
- Gained $10.9m in cap space after June 1st release deadline
Good news and good vibes are finally coming out of Cleveland. Feels like it has been while. QB Deshaun Watson appears to be benefitting from having a full offseason and getting work in with his new receivers. He has been pushing hard for Hopkins and the Browns would make sense as a good landing spot for him given the prior relationship Watson and Hopkins had during their time in Houston. I have been pleasantly surprised by how well things appear to be going so far this offseason.
Dallas Cowboys: - Started long-term extension talks with CB Trevon Diggs
- WR Antonio Callaway was arrested Saturday in Miami
- Micah Parsons is more concerned with making impactful plays on defense
- Supposedly out on WR DeAndre Hopkins
- RB Tony Pollard is a little ahead of schedule with rehab
- Gained $10.9m in cap space after June 1st deadline
Similar to the Bills I don’t think the Cowboys are actually out on Hopkins but probably sending a message that he needs to bring down his asking price. I wonder sometimes if they are still saving room for RB Ezekiel Elliott to come back here and play especially with them gaining the $10.9m in cap space after the deadline. Also, hopefully the team can get something done with CB Trevon Diggs sooner rather than later because he has been an impactful piece on defense despite the big plays he occasionally gives up because he can change a game with one of his interceptions.
Denver Broncos: - HC Sean Payton puts a heavy emphasis on the importance of Guards in the NFL
- Released RB Jacques Patrick
- Gained $3.75m in cap space after June 1st deadline
- Signed:
Not too much news here but they did find their replacement for K Brandon McManus in Elliott Fry. I would say less news from this team this offseason is better because ever since QB Russell Wilson struggled it seemed like the media was out to get him and the team any chance they had. HC Sean Payton must be running a pretty tight ship.
Detroit Lions: - OC Ben Johnson expects offense to take a huge step forward this season
- RB Jahymr Gibbs has been standing out in practice running and catching the ball
- OT Penei Sewell is embracing leadership role
- S Tracy Walker expects to be fully cleared for camp
All good news this week which should be good for morale. Seems they have strung together a couple good weeks during their OTAs. Great to see that RB Jahymr Gibbs is getting some reps in and showcasing his abilities that made the team feel the need to spend a high draft pick on him. Great to see as well that Penei Sewell at the young age of 22 taking on a leadership role and getting good work in as well. With that said OC Ben Johnson could be prepping and is expecting for the offense to have a big year.
Green Bay Packers: - WR Romeo Doubs doesn’t think there will be a regression with QB Jordan Love
- OL David Bakhtiari says disrespectful to say they are rebuilding
- Will hold joint practices with the Bengals
It appears that it may be a bit tough in the post Aaron Rodgers era as expected. However, it does sound like there is less front office drama now that they are not having to work with him in the offseason. Time will tell whether the drama was more caused by a lack of good communication as Rodgers claimed recently or by the former Packers QB himself.
Houston Texans: - QB CJ Stroud is ahead of where the team expected him to be at this point
- RT Tytus Howard is in line for a big extension
- Released DT Taylor Stallworth with injury settlement
- Will hold joint practices with the Dolphins and Saints
Good news about CJ Stroud but again as I mentioned with Bryce Young it is hard to find a team that drafted a top QB in the draft not raving about their quarterbacks progress at this point. The joint practices they have setup will be great for QB CJ Stroud. The Dolphins and Saints should each have tough defenses this year and will give Stroud a bit better of an idea of what to expect from an NFL defense in a real game.
Indianapolis Colts: - QB Anthony Richardson is looking really good overall
- Worked out WR Breshad Perriman
Looks like the Colts are trying to get receiver help but haven’t decided on any yet. This is the team that should go out and get Hopkins. They need a true #1 receiver and Josh Downs while I think he will be really good would benefit from having a big bodied possession type receiver in Hopkins. Also, it would give QB Anthony Richardson more of a safety net in terms of a WR that can help him progress and see things that he may not have picked up on otherwise.
Jacksonville Jaguars: - K Brandon McManus called special teams coach to express interest in the team after being cut
- EDGE Josh Allen is the only player under contract not attending voluntary OTAs
- Being cautious with WR Calvin Ridley during OTAs
- Plan to have a RB committee approach
I am really excited for the Jaguars this season. They are kind of the forgotten team in the NFL most years but appear to be poised to make a deep playoff run this year. WR Calvin Ridley is going to be a huge difference maker this year and should benefit from QB Trevor Lawrence continuing to progress going into his 3rd NFL season.
Kansas City Chiefs: - Wife of Chiefs owner Norma Hunt passed at the age of 85
- Supposedly out on WR DeAndre Hopkins
- WR Justyn Ross has the trust of QB Patrick Mahomes
Sad news to hear about Norma Hunt’s passing as the whole league mourned and sent their condolences. They are also supposedly out on Hopkins which I believe means they are really saying we need you to come down on price. The Chiefs though per usual have revealed though their secret weapon in WR Justyn Ross who many had forgotten about due to him sitting out with an injury his rookie year. It looks like Ross may be back to prior form when he was making plays at Clemson with Trevor Lawrence.
Las Vegas Raiders: - Open to listening to trade offers for WR Hunter Renfrow
- HC Josh McDaniels is not worried about QB Jimmy Garoppolo’s foot surgery
Even though the media and some fans were starting to worry about Jimmy G’s foot surgery it does not appear McDaniels has any worries about him missing time because of it. Will be interesting to see what the team ends up doing with Renfrow with all signs from earlier in the offseason pointing towards a release or trade.
Los Angeles Chargers: - WR Quentin Johnson has been impressive according to teammates Keenan Allen
- OT Rashawn Slater is at 100% and has been for quite some time
Not much news here but it was great news to get confirmation from OT Rashawn Slater regarding his health and to hear WR Keenan Allen’s thoughts on rookie WR Quentin Johnson. This team should give us what they think they will every year and go far in the playoff this year.
Los Angeles Rams: - DC Raheem Morris helped save drowning child
- Signed:
Not much news here but signed WR Tyler Johnson who can help them make some big splashy plays on offense. DC Raheem Morris helped saved a drowning child and credited his AED training. Always cool to hear these stories about NFL coaches and players leaping into action to help and save other in the community.
Miami Dolphins: - Hope to sign DT Christian Wilkins to an extension before the season
- QB Tua Tagovailoa is completely healthy and showing signs of growth as a leader
- Real possibility they end up with RB Dalvin Cook this year
- Opted to only use 6 of 10 available days of OTAs
- Gained $13.6m in cap space after June 1st deadline
- Will hold joint practices with the Texans
This team appears to be click on all levels so far this offseason and there appears to be a lot more good coming with the team working to get a Wilkins extension done before the season and may even still end up with RB Dalvin Cook here soon. Tua being completely healthy at this point doesn’t feel like much of a surprise but it does appear that he is trying to take on more of a leadership role after finding his confidence last year. My main worry though with Tua is that last year he still was very much a rhythm quarterback in my mind so when he got knocked off that rhythm he had some really bad games. However, when he was able to keep in rhythm he at times looked like the best passer in the league. It will be key this offseason now that he knows the offense to be able to play off rhythm when necessary and make those plays that the top quarterbacks in the league make if he wanting to take the next step.
Minnesota Vikings: - Seems that only thing left for RB Dalvin Cook is an announcement of how he will be leaving the team by trade or by getting cut
- Head Coach Kevin O’Connell described RB Alexander Mattison as a every down RB
- Paid off their debt on stadium 23 years earlier saving taxpayers $226m in interest
- Expected that WR Justin Jefferson to be highest paid WR when he signs his extension
- Will have joint practices with Tennessee
It appears that the Vikings are in a holding pattern and I imagine are hoping to get a trade package they approve of for RB Dalvin Cook. Sooner or later though it appears that Dalvin Cook will not be with the Vikings this year. Big win though for the fans and locals in Minnesota with the team paying off their stadium early and saving taxpayers a bunch of money. Might get some more buy in from good press like that.
New England Patriots: - QB Mac Jones is aiming to earn the respect of his teammates
Not much news here but it appears things are moving along really well in comparison with last year at this time. QB Mac Jones seems happy and is working hard. It will be tough for this Patriots team with how stacked the division is but maybe a big move to get Hopkins and some improvement from the offense and Mac Jones and who knows they may be right up there with everyone else in the division.
New Orleans Saints: - DE Cam Jordan will play for the team as long as he wants
- QB Jameis Winston feels that he is still a starting QB in the league
- Excited to WR Michael Thomas to be ready for camp
- Will hold joint practices with the Texans
- HC Dennis Allen had Jon Gruden attend OTAs in order to aid offense with QB Derek Carr
- TE Juwan Johnson has been studying Julian Edelman tape at QB Derek Carr’s urging
Another team where things just seem to be clicking so far is here in New Orleans. QB Derek Carr seems to be doing a good job taking on a leadership role and working with teammates such as TE Juwan Johnson. Things will be going even better if WR Michael Thomas can actually return for camp and find a way to play near a level that he used to. Right now in a wide open NFC South it appears that this team will be the favorites to win it going into the season.
New York Giants: - Did homework on WR DeAndre Hopkins and are now supposedly not interested in pursuing him
- Officially added Ryan Cowden as executive advisor the general manager
- QB Daniel Jones is ok with rookie center John Michael Schmitz using “dead snap” technique
Not much here which may be a good thing for a New York team to get a break from all the media. This season will be an interesting one with how the team went all in on QB Daniel Jones. It kind of feels like besides the Eagles the rest of the division is up for grabs with no true strong contender emerging yet.
New York Jets: - QB Aaron Rodgers has enjoyed the communication within the organization
- Signed:
- Released OL Eric Smith
- The team and Quinnen Williams are not far off in contract talks
Good news on the Quinnen Williams front and in keeping Aaron Rodgers happy. Williams and the team are not far off in contract talks which hopefully means something will get done here very soon. Rodgers has been raving about the Jets communication skills which was his main gripe with the Packers. Now lets just make it clear that he does not need to be pulling the sled.
Philadelphia Eagles: - Team is excited for QB Jalen Hurts to make another huge leap
- Offered to trade for QB Russell Wilson but Wilson did not want to play in Philly
- DT Jordan Davis broke a blocking sled
Man what a difference one decision can make. Jalen Hurts I imagine would have been in Seattle had the trade happened for Russell Wilson. I bet Eagles fans are happy this didn’t pan out but it does not mean they need to cut Wilson any slack for not wanting to play in Philly if these teams meet in future seasons or end up playing each other in the Super Bowl. Eagles appear setup to be the main threat in the NFC.
Pittsburgh Steelers: - First round pick Broderick Jones getting 1st-team reps at Left Tackle
Not much out of Pittsburgh per usual but the good news is that Broderick Jones is progressing nicely and is already getting 1st-team reps at Left Tackle. I am sure QB Kenny Pickett is pleased with that.
San Francisco 49ers: - S Ji’Ayir Brown is already taking first team reps and has stood out in OTAs
- GM John Lynch feels QB Trey Lance has had a really quality offseason
- Very encouraged by progress and throwing session QB Brock Purdy had
- DL Arik Armstead very excited about adding Javon Hargrave to the group
- RB Christian McCaffrey excited to have a full offseason with HC Kyle Shanahan
- Plan to make DE Nick Bosa highest paid defensive player
Things are moving along just fine for the 49ers. Exciting to hear that S Ji’Ayir Brown is making good progress and apparently had 4 or 5 interceptions during OTAs. I imagine the team is also very pleased with the progress QB Brock Purdy is making in his recovery from elbow surgery. He appears to be on pace with the original timeline. If this team can figure it out at the QB position they just might be the most complete all around team up there with the Eagles.
Seattle Seahawks: - HC Pete Carroll expects his team to be aggressive when returning kicks and expects more squib kicks to be used
- WR Jaxon Smith-Njigba has been extremely impressive
- Signed:
- Benjie Franklin
- Montrae Braswell
- Cut:
- Forrest Merrill
- LaTrell Bumphus
Gotta love HC Pete Carroll. It seems like so far it has been pretty unanimous that all those that are playing or coaching football do not love the new kickoff rules. I am sure folks will find ways to take advantage of it though. Once again this week WR Jaxon Smith Njigba was impressive and should be establishing himself within that offense. Seahawks could very well be a sleeper team in the NFC that was good last year but that folks are paying a ton of attention to this year.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers: - Antoine Winfield Jr. is expected to play Free Safety this year
- Respect is a key factor in the quarterback battle that is ongoing
- WR Chris Godwin feels his explosiveness coming back
This team has all the big name weapons at receiver one could ask for as long as they stay healthy. It was great to hear that Chris Godwin is getting his explosiveness back. Now not surprisingly it comes down to the QB battle and a big part of that is gaining respect from those veteran players and coaches in the building. I still feel like this battle is QB Baker Mayfield’s to lose at this point.
Tennessee Titans: - Longtime executive Bob Hyde passed away
- QB Will Levis had a rough week at practice
- P Brett Kern announced his retirement
- Will have joint practice with Minnesota
- Signed:
Sad news this past week here as well with the passing of Bob Hyde. Also, finally some negative news about one of the Quarterbacks from this year’s draft. Will Levis has been struggling. However, this should not be viewed as a bad sign because every rookie is going to struggle and Levis with his situation has the benefit of time.
Washington Commanders: - The Josh Harris bid after making some changes is inching closer to full approval
- CB Emmanuel Forbes has been thriving in the slot
- QB Sam Howell has looked the part and is taking command of the offense thus far
- OC Eric Bieniemy wants everyone to be like WR Terry McLaurin
- Gained $8.37m in cap space after June 1st deadline
- Released CB Cameron Dantzler
- Releasing G Andrew Norwell once he passes physical
Seems we are inching closer and closer to the Josh Harris Group’s bid being fully accepted by the owners after some minor adjustments. From the actual team and players it sounds like things are going really well and maybe better than a lot of folks expected. CB Emmanuel Forbes has been doing well in the slot and QB Sam Howell is looking the part and taking charge. The Commanders will be a fun team to watch this year and see how they end up when it is all said and done.
Miscellaneous/Other NFL News: - Still no announcement as to who will be the team featured on Hard Knocks
- CB Damar Hamlin is leading a multi-city CPAED tour
- Several NFL teams are waiting for RB Dalvin Cook to be cut
- Yannick Ngakoue wants a multi-year deal with a Super Bowl contender
- Chiefsaholic fan is still on the loose
- Tom Brady is certain he is done playing and has tried to make that clear to other teams
- RB Ezekiel Elliott is staying in shape
- Executive are nervous about WR DeAndre Hopkins ability to separate and run at this point in his career
- Less than 100 days from the NFL season
Restaurant of the Week: (Pittsburgh - Burgatory) Get excited Pittsburgh fans and all folks going to a game here! Burgatory is only a half mile from the stadium and has some of the best food so far from the restaurants that have been featured. One of my personal favorites is the Piggy Butter & Jelly. Yes, that is a burger with peanut butter and jelly on it. Don’t question it just try it. However, if for some reason you do not my other recommendation would be The Triple B which is a Bison, Beer Cheese, and Bacon burger. Hence the name Triple B. You can’t really go wrong with anything on the menu and the important thing though is that you don’t forget to grab a shake as well. My personal favorite is the Oreo Peanut Butter Pie shake. They are open every day starting at 11am and closer at 9pm everyday except for Friday and Saturday when they close at 11pm. Hop on over and enjoy this delicious food when in town for a game!

2023.06.05 14:28 sonofabutch No game today, so let's remember a forgotten Yankee: Truck Hannah
The entirety of
Harry "Truck" Hannah's major league career came with the New York Yankees -- all three years of it. But if you include his participation in the minors, he had a long career, beginning in 1909 with the Tacoma Tigers in the Northwestern League and ending in 1940 with the Memphis Chickasaws in the Southern Association. He is one of only a handful of players to have a hit in five different decades!
Of all the forgotten Yankee with memorable nicknames --
No Neck,
Stanky the Yankee,
Sailor Bob,
Spud,
Slow Joe,
The Mummy,
Birdie,
Bump, and
Grandma Johnny -- there's something to be said about the sublime elegance of a big, brawny catcher nicknamed Truck.
James Harrison Hannah Jr. was born 134 years ago today, on June 5, 1889, in what was then the Dakota Territory. (It would become the state of North Dakota about five months later.) By age 2, the family had moved to Seattle, Washington.
As a kid, he was called Harry, but by the time he was playing baseball, he was universally known as Truck. There are several stories as to how he got the nickname. Some said it had to do with his imposing size -- he stood 6'1" and weighed a solid 190 pounds -- and others because of the way he could block the plate as easily as a truck could block a street. Other sources say the nickname wasn't comparing him to a motor vehicle but to a horse, or rather a truck horse, as horses that pulled heavy wagons were called at the time. His daughter, Helen, said he got the nickname simply because he was "big and slow."
Another explanation, a little less colorful, was that Hannah paid the bills in the off-season by working as a truck driver!
Hall of Fame Umpire Billy Evans said Hannah was adept at the catcher's trick of distracting the batter with a steady stream of banter while behind the plate:
"Truck Hannah always has been an object of interest to me when catching. Aside from always doing a pretty good job receiving, he never failed to have a line of conversation that would make a bigger hit on the vaudeville circuit than some of the stuff used by some monologue artists. Hannah keeps up a continual chatter from the time the game starts. Of course, his conversation is largely directed at the batter, in the hope that his line of talk will take the mind of the batter from his work, the making of base hits. He seeks to keep the batter from concentrating, and from the many strikes slipped over by the New York pitchers, I would say there was merit in his system. Hannah's conversation is never objectionable. He usually has the batter laughing at some of his talk, rather than sore."
But Hannah used more than just banter to distract batters. As the pitch was being delivered, he would sometimes spit tobacco juice onto a player's shoes, toss pebbles onto the plate, or throw dirt at their hands on the bat!
Hannah got his start in professional baseball as a 20-year-old third baseman with the Tacoma Tigers in the Northwestern League. When the team needed an emergency catcher, Hannah was put behind the plate and stuck there for the rest of his career. Over the next five years he played for five different teams in four different leagues, until in 1914 finally catching on with the Sacramento Wolves in the Pacific Coast League. The PCL at the time was considered by some to be a third major league, or at least the minor league closest to major league competition, and Hannah was regarded as one of the best catchers in the league. He drew interest from several major league teams, including the Tigers, Phillies, and Browns. But it was the Yankees who finally acquired him, paying $4,000 to acquire his rights after he hit .292 in 569 at-bats in 1917.
Truck pulled into the Polo Grounds -- not Yankee Stadium, which wouldn't be built until 1923 -- as the foundation was being laid for a dynasty. Jacob Ruppert and Tillinghast Huston purchased the Yankees in 1915 and immediately set about reversing the fortunes of what had been for years one of the worst-run teams in the American League. The Yankees, as they became known in 1913, had only winning season in the last 10 years.
The new owners set about making changes, acquiring a number of valuable players: Wally Pipp, Home Run Baker, Ping Bodie, Aaron Ward, Urban Shocker, and previously forgotten Yankee
Bob Shawkey.
After the 1917 season they made the biggest change of all, firing well-liked manager Bill Donovan and replacing him with former St. Louis Cardinals manager Miller Huggins, who over the next 11 years would lead the Yankees to six pennants and three World Series.
Huggins made another move, acquiring from the St. Louis Browns future Hall of Fame pitcher "Gettysburg Eddie" Plank and veteran second baseman Del Pratt. The latter would be a good player for the Yankees, hitting .295/.348/.394 (106 OPS+) over the next three seasons, but the 42-year-old Plank refused to report and retired instead. In return, the Yankees shipped out five players... including starting catcher Les Nunamaker, who had been with the Yankees for four seasons.
And so, needing a catcher to replace Nunamaker, the Yankees paid the Salt Lake City Bees $4,000 for Hannah. He was expected to battle 22-year-old Muddy Ruel to be the backup to the 25-year-old Roxy Walters, who had been Nunamaker's understudy since September 1915, but Ruel would be drafted into the U.S. Army and Walters broke his finger in an exhibition game 10 days before Opening Day. By the time Walters was ready to play again, Hannah was hitting .288/.432/.356 and had thrown out 19 out of 34 basestealers; over the rest of the season, he would maintain that pace to lead the league in CS% (55%) as well as in double plays as a catcher (16). His batting average would fade dramatically, however, dropping all the way to .220 by the end of the season, but he was still contributing with a .361 OBP in 312 plate appearances. Walters's bat never got started at all, and hitting just .199/.239/.236 in 205 plate appearances.
Technically a major league rookie when he joined the team, the 29-year-old Hannah was treated like a veteran from his four seasons in the well-respected Pacific Coast League. In addition, he was -- literally as well as figuratively, at 6'1" -- one of the few players on the team who could see eye-to-eye with the 6'2" Babe Ruth when he was acquired prior to the 1920 season. When Ruth got into squabbles with diminutive manager Miller Huggins, it was often Hannah's duty to keep the peace.
Yankee shortstop Roger Peckinpaugh, the Yankee captain from 1914 to 1921, described one such incident to long-time Yankee PR man Marty Appel in 1974:
"Once we were leaving Boston after a tough loss, and Babe was drunk, and he said he was gonna throw Huggins off the train! He was heading for his drawing room. On the way he stopped in the men’s room and punched this huge mirror. It fell into a million pieces. Me and Ernie Shore and Truck Hannah pulled him down to the ground and sat on him until he passed out. Truck — a big guy — puts him over his shoulder and moves him to the next car."
At the end of the season, the Yankees were happy enough with Hannah that they traded Roxy Walters to the Red Sox. For the next two years, the catching duties were almost evenly split between Hannah and Ruel, who was back from the Army with the end of World War I.
The "Muddy-Truck" tandem was colorfully named but disappointing, with Ruel hitting .255/.325/.306 (71 OPS+) in 560 PA and Hannah .243/.313/.317 (70 OPS+) in 553 PA. Catcher in those days was very much a defense-first position, and both had good gloves, but the Yankees (even with the newly acquired Babe Ruth having an 11.7 bWAR season) finished three games out of 1st in 1920.
Ruppert and Huston asked Huggins what the team needed to win, and his answer: a catcher.
At the end of the season, the Yankees sent Hannah back to the Pacific Coast League, and traded Ruel to the Red Sox for previously forgotten Yankee
Wally Schang, the first in the long line of great Yankee catchers. In his five years with the Yankees, the switch-hitting Schang hit .297/.390/.406 (105 OPS+), and in the 1923 World Series -- the first of 27 won by the Yankees -- Schang played every inning of every game, went 7-for-22 (.318) with a double and three runs scored, and allowed just one stolen base.
Hannah would stay in the Pacific Coast League for the next 22 years as a player, coach, and manager. He had a great year with the Vernon Tigers in 1923, hitting .346 with 23 doubles and 6 home runs in 370 plate appearances. His final plate appearance came on May 19, 1940, when he was managing the Memphis Chicks. Two weeks shy of his 51st birthday, with both his catchers injured, Hannah caught both ends of a doubleheader and went 1-for-6.
Hannah retired from baseball two years later after his St. Paul Saints lost 15 games in a row -- 11 of them by one run! He said he couldn't sleep anymore, replaying every loss in his head over and over, second-guessing every decision he made as manager.
He retired to his ranch in Southern California, but remained active enough in the regional baseball scene that when the Los Angeles Angels played their first major league game in 1961, Hannah was selected to catch the ceremonial first pitch.
Truck Hannah died on April 27, 1982, five weeks shy of his 93rd birthday. His wife, Helen, died in October, a month before what would have been their 70th wedding anniversary.
Keep On Truckin':
- One of the more interesting aspects in researching information about Truck Hannah is in looking for pictures of him, you come across many photos of trucks owned by women named Hannah.
- Hannah made his major league debut against the great Walter Johnson. In his first major league plate appearance, he singled up the middle! He popped out his second time up, then struck out. His fourth time up he drew a walk against Johnson, advanced to second on a single, and scored his first major league run on a double, and the Yankees won, 6-3. Not a bad debut against the future Hall of Famer!
- According to his SABR biography: "Hannah’s daughter may have led a more interesting life than her ballplaying father. Helen Lorraine (Hannah) Campbell was one of the first women in Los Angeles to enlist in the Marine Corps during World War II, and retired from the Marine Corps Reserve in 1975 after 32 years of service. She was also a chaperone for several years with the Muskegon and Kalamazoo teams in the All American Girls Professional Baseball League, the league that inspired the 1992 movie A League of Their Own. At the age of 75 she went parasailing for the first time and at 78 sailed over Africa’s Serengeti plains in a hot-air balloon. She died in 2013 at the age of 97."
- On May 12, 1920, Hannah went 4-for-4 (all singles) with two runs and two RBIs in a 14-8 rout of the Chicago White Sox. Hannah singled twice in a seven-run 6th inning, as did pitcher Bob Shawkey; it was the first time in major league history that a pitcher and catcher each had two hits in the same inning.
- That was Hannah's best day as a major leaguer, but he had another four-hit day on September 11, 1920, with a double and three singles in five at-bats against the Cleveland Indians.
- Truck Hannah was the first major leaguer born in what would become North Dakota when he made his debut on April 15, 1918. He also is one of three Yankees born in North Dakota: Ken Hunt, an outfielder in the Yankee farm system from 1952 to 1960 who had a couple cups of coffee in the Bronx, and later played for the Angels and Senators; and long-time Cleveland Indians 1B/DH Travis Hafner, who ended his career with the Yankees in 2013. The most famous Yankee raised in North Dakota is Roger Maris, but he was actually born in Minnesota. The family moved to Fargo when Maris was 8 years old. A total of 20 major leaguers were born in North Dakota, and the best, by bWAR, was Angels outfielder and two-time All-Star Darin Erstad.
- Hannah is on the All-Palindromic Last Name Team, along with Dean Anna, Toby Harrah, Eddie Kazak, Dave Otto, Glenn Otto, Dick Nen, Robb Nen, Johnny Reder, Juan Salas, and Mark Salas.
- In 1917, Hannah was behind the plate for the Salt Lake City Bees in the Pacific Coast League when former New York Giants outfielder Fred Snodgrass came up to the plate for the Vernon Tigers. Hannah, by this time a 28-year-old nine-year minor league veteran and hitting a respectable .292, wasn't impressed. "So you're a big leaguer? I guess you're going to come out here and show us how the Giants used to do it, eh? Let's see if you can hit this one." That off-season, major league teams asked Snodgrass for his opinion on the top players in the Pacific Coast League, and his report on Hannah: "I don’t like him personally, but I must say he is the best all around catcher in this league, and my dislike for him does not blind me to that fact."
- George Halas -- who would later be the founder of the Chicago Bears -- was a 24-year-old rookie on the New York Yankees in 1919. He was on the bench sitting next to Truck Hannah during a game against the Tigers, staring wide-eyed as his boyhood idol, the legendary Ty Cobb, strode to the plate. Hannah, maybe pranking the rookie, told Halas he ought to razz Cobb to try to throw him off his game. Halas did as he was told, and to his surprise, got a reaction: Cobb dropped his bat, marched over to the Yankee dugout, and pointed at Halas. "Punk! I'll see you after the game! Don't forget, punk!" Halas, a Navy veteran and a college football player, was no punk but not exactly looking forward to a brawl against the famously irascible Cobb. He stayed in the locker room as long as possible, hoping Cobb would be gone by the time he emerged, but when he finally came out, the Georgia Peach was waiting for him. "I like your spirit, kid," Cobb said, "but don't overdo it when you don't have to." Halas said it was a lesson he never forgot.
- Speaking of Cobb, he told a sportswriter he didn't care for Hannah's distracting patter behind the plate: “This fellow Hannah of the New York club keeps me busier at the plate than any other catcher in the league. I don’t like letting a recruit outtalk me, and in my effort to keep my end of the conversation, I had my work cut out for me making base hits off those Yankee pitchers.”
- Carl Mays, who had pitched for the Red Sox since 1915, was acquired by the Yankees on July 30, 1919. Delighted to go from the 38-48 Red Sox to the 48-38 Yankees, Mays made the rounds in the clubhouse, shaking hands. When he got to Hannah, he offered his hand, but Hannah shoved him away, then charged after him. Mays backed up until Hannah vaulted over a table and cornered him against a wall -- and only then did Hannah shake his hand. "We're even," Hannah said, grinning. Since the previous season, Hannah and Mays had been feuding. Mays took great pride in keeping his uniform spotless, and hated Hannah's trick of spitting tobacco juice onto his shoes while batting. So every time Hannah came up to the plate, Mays came "up and in" to make him hit the dirt. In April, the last time they'd face each other, Mays plunked him. But now they were teammates and all was forgiven. Ironically, a year later, Mays would kill Cleveland Indians shortstop Ray Chapman with a pitch that hit him in the head.
- During the off seasons, Hannah played in the California Winter League, believed to be the only integrated league in professional baseball at the time. Hannah also played against Negro Leaguers when barnstorming with Babe Ruth in 1920 and Dizzy Dean in 1935.
- Prior to the 1927 season, Babe Ruth made a silent movie called Babe Comes Home. Based on a short story called "Said With Soap," it had quite the plot: Ruth is Babe Dugan, a ballplayer whose tobacco-chewing habit means his uniform is always stained. He falls in love with Vernie, the laundress who cleans the team uniforms, but she wants him to stop chewing tobacco. Babe then goes into a slump, and finds himself on the bench. Vernie finally relents and gives him a plug of tobacco, and Babe hits a game-winning home run. The movie was filmed at Wrigley Field -- not that one, but a field with the same name in Los Angeles. It was the home stadium for the Los Angeles Angels, and on the Angels were several ex-Yankees, including Truck Hannah. Ruth was much more interested in his old pals than in the movie, and the exasperated director struggled to keep Ruth's attention. Finally, he moved Ruth to a distant park of the stadium, as far away as he could from Hannah and the other ex-Yankees. But Hannah and the others kept mischievously hitting balls in his direction, causing Ruth to botch take after take!
- Hannah was in two movies himself, both times as a baseball playing extra. The films are notable because they are both early "talkies". His first appearance was in 1928's Warming Up, about a pitcher (played by Richard Dix, later a star in westerns) who falls in love with the team owner's daughter (played by Jean Arthur, who would later co-star with Jimmy Stewart in Mr. Smith Goes to Washington). A year later Hannah was in Fast Company, about a baseball player (Jack Oakie) who is inspired to greatness thanks to fan letters he thinks come from a beautiful woman (Evelyn Brent) but are actually written by his conniving manager (Skeets Gallagher). In 1940, Oakie was nominated for an Academy Award for his performance as a parody of Benito Mussolini in Charlie Chaplin's The Great Dictator.
- Joe DiMaggio, still a teenager, played for the San Francisco Seals in the Pacific Coast League from 1932 to 1935. Hannah, with the Los Angeles Angels, played against him often. Prior to DiMaggio's debut with the Yankees in 1936, a sportswriter asked the former big leaguer for his scouting report on DiMaggio. "They'll be comparing him to Tris Speaker and Harry Hooper and those fellows in a year or two," Hannah said. Truck was right: Speaker and Hooper were both Hall of Fame outfielders, and of course, so was the Yankee Clipper.
- In 1936, Hannah was a playecoach for the Los Angeles Angels. Ted Williams, already a legendary hitter (and pitcher) from his exploits at Herbert Hoover High School in San Diego, was being courted by both major and minor league teams. Ted's father, Sam Williams, was acting as his agent, and he arranged a meeting with Truck Hannah to talk about a contract with the Angels. "When my dad went down to talk to him, Hannah said, 'Where's the kid?'" Williams later recalled. "Dad says, 'He's not here.' Hannah said, 'Well, for crying out loud, go get him. He's the one I want to talk to, not you!'" Insulted, Sam Williams walked away. Instead, Williams -- after turning down offers from the Yankees and the Cardinals -- signed with the newly formed San Diego Padres of the Pacific Coast League. Had he signed with the Angels, Williams likely would have been a Cub, as they were a Chicago affiliate. (But Williams, a San Diego native, likely would have signed with the Padres even if Hannah had made a better impression.)
- Hannah's mouth almost cost his team another teenaged prospect. In 1934, 16-year-old Steve Mesner went to an open try-out for the Los Angeles Angels, and Hannah was helping to evaluate the prospects. He took one look at Mesner and shouted, "Get out of here, kid! You're too little!" Mesner started walking off the field, but someone told him to go back. During batting practice, he hit three balls over the fence! During a fielding drill, he was handling every chance, and the coach kept hitting them harder and harder, expecting the teenager to boot one. He didn't, and the team gave him a contract. Mesner hit .328 in three years with the Angels before going to the Chicago Cubs and later the Cincinnati Reds.
- The winter of 1918-1919 was gripped by the "Spanish Flu" epidemic and, in a scene that would be familiar to all of us today, the players, umpires, and fans in a Southern California winter league wore face masks during the game. A photo ran in the newspaper with the catcher misidentified in the caption as "Trash" Hannah of the New York Yankees!
- Hannah is a member of the Pacific Coast League Hall of Fame. Some sources say he was an inaugural member when it was created in 1943; other sources say he was inducted in 1950. Other notable Yankees in the PCL HoF include Frankie Crosetti, Joe DiMaggio, and Casey Stengel.
- Hannah's daughter, U.S. Marine Master Gunnery Sergeant Helen Hannah Campbell, went to Whittier High School with Richard Nixon, and later served as a docent the Richard Nixon Library and Birthplace in Yorba Linda, California. Richard Nixon, who grew up watching Hannah as a player and manager in the Pacific Coast League, said in a 1983 interview: "I remember Truck Hannah. He was a great catcher and could hit."
- In 1925, Hannah helped organize the Association of Professional Ball Players of America, created to assist former professional baseball players who are injured, elderly, or destitute. The APBPA is still in existence today!
Near the end of his career, Truck Hannah was interviewed about the rigors of being a catcher. He said during his 30 years in baseball he'd broken every finger on his right hand at least twice. "What the hell, it's all part of the game," he said. "It sure was fun while it lasted. Even with busted hands and fingers and everything else, I wouldn't have missed it for the world."

I took my son to the Joe Mixon football camp at sycamore high school this weekend. I know he’s not been painted in a very flattering light this past year, but that guy was a complete class act. Very involved with the kids. Funny, attentive, and genuinely caring. Props to him for giving his weekend to his younger fans.

2023.06.04 20:23 jimbobbypaul Ranking the Top 131 FBS Programs of the Last 40 Years: 82. Memphis
Main hub thread with the full 131 rankings What if I told you Memphis made Peyton Manning the QB he is today? In 1996, Memphis hosted junior QB Peyton Manning and #6 Tennessee late in the season. Memphis was just 3-6, while Tennessee was 6-1 and in the hunt for a national title.
In true college football chaos fashion, the 26 point underdog Tigers pulled off a 21-17 win, scoring a TD with just 34 seconds to go. Returner Kevin Cobb took back a controversial 95 kick return for TD in which it looked like his knee was down, but the refs ruled it a TD. The play won an ESPY for college football play of the year, and the win was one of the biggest in school history.

Memphis has produced the most NFL draftees of anyone on the list so far with 60, more than the 6 Power 5 teams we’ve seen including Iowa State, Indiana, Kansas, and Rutgers. Primarily they’ve been a RB factory in recent years, producing NFL RBs DeAngelo Williams, Tony Pollard, Antonio Gibson, Darrell Henderson, and Kenneth Gainwell. The first 3 produced 1000+ yard rushing seasons in the NFL, while Gainwell ran for 100 yards in a playoff game last year, and Henderson won a Super Bowl with the Rams recently. They also have a shout to be Special Teams U, producing All-American K Joe Allison, All-American P Tom Hornsey, NFL 2010s All-Decade K Stephen Gostkowski, and current NFL starting kickers Jake Elliott and Riley Patterson.
Top 5 Seasons
Worst Season: 2010 (1-11 overall, 0-8 Conference USA) I can only imagine how helpless Dontari Poe felt. The 6’3 345 lb DT would be drafted with the 11th overall pick just 2 years later, and was a standout talent on an otherwise hapless Memphis team. Memphis ranked bottom 5 in both offense (14.4 PPG) and defense (39.8 PPG) in 2010, losing 8 games by 20+ points. Freshman punter Tom Hornsey probably enjoyed the inept offense, getting to punt 80 times for a 42.7 yard average. Hornsey would go on to be a consensus All-American 3 years later in 2013. They somehow beat Middle Tennessee 24-17, who made a bowl. But a 17-56 loss to 5-7 Houston was bad. Most of the blame fell on the shoulders of first year head coach Larry Porter, who prior to his hiring, had never been a head coach or even coordinator. Porter came from LSU’s RB coach position, and has returned to coaching RBs ever since his firing in 2011. As one
cfb member put it, “Larry Porter almost got our program cancelled.”
5. 2003 (9-4 overall, 5-3 Conference USA) After beating Tennessee Tech 40-10 in the opener, Memphis made themselves nationally known in week 2, beating Eli Manning and Ole Miss 44-34. Memphis QB Danny Wimprine outdueled Manning, throwing for 355 yards and 3 TD with no picks, also catching a 34 yard pass on a trick play. Future NFL RB Deangelo Williams burst onto the scene, racking up 166 and 3 TD from scrimmage on 32 touches. Ole Miss was a good team that year too, they’d finish 10-3 with a #13 final ranking. Memphis had a hangover after the game though, and won just 1 of their next 4. They grouped together to win 5 straight by an average score of 37-14, before losing to USF 16-21 in the final regular season game. Tied for 3rd place in C-USA, Memphis faced 3 straight Sun Belt champs North Texas in the New Orleans Bowl, shutting down any UNT passing game for a 27-17 win. Junior QB Danny Wimprine threw for 3000+ yards with 22 TD 13 INT, and would finish his career next season as Memphis’ all-time leading passer with 10,215 yards and 81 TD. DeAngelo Williams won C-USA Offensive POTY with just 11 games played, going for 1814 yards from scrimmage. Sophomore K Stephen Gostkowski was 19/29 on FGs.
4. 2017 (10-3 overall, 7-1 American) By 2017, Memphis was known as one of the more solid Group of 5 programs, having gone 27-12 over the previous 3 years, located in an area with lots of local talent. QB Riley Ferguson and WR Anthony Miller returned for their seniors year after a great 2016 connection, and would level up in 2017. In week 3 they hosted #25 UCLA and Josh Rosen, who had just completed a 34-point comeback against Texas A&M 2 weeks prior. Ferguson was the better QB on the day, throwing for 6 TD in a 48-45 upset win. After a 3-0 start they’d lose 13-40 to a UCF team that would finish the season unbeaten. A few weeks later, a 30-27 win over #25 Navy would give Memphis their second win over a top 25 team in one season, their first time ever doing so. Other wins included 42-38 over Houston after being down 14-31 in the 3rd quarter, 66-45 over 7-6 SMU, and 70-13 over East Carolina. It was #20 UCF (11-0) vs #20 Memphis (10-1) for the AAC title, and UCF, a team of destiny that year, would win 62-55 in OT in one of the games of the year. Memphis played an emotional Iowa State team in the bowl, who was having their best season in decades, and lost by 1 point.
Ferguson threw for 4257 yards 38 TD 9 INT, completing a fantastic 2-season career after transferring from community college. RB Patrick Taylor Jr. got the bulk of carries with 157 for 866 yards and 13 TD, but it was Darrell Henderson who popped off with 1154 rushing yards on 8.9(!!!) yards per carry. Anthony Miller was a consensus All-American with 96 catches for 1462 yards and 18 TD, leading the nation in TD catches. LB Genard Avery had a stellar season on the defensive side with 80 tackles, 8.5 sacks, and 13.5 TFL.
This was one of the best offenses in the country, ranking 2nd in PPG with 45.5.
3. 2015 (9-4 overall, 5-3 American) Justin Fuente was building something special at Memphis. Hired to clean up the mess Larry Porter left, Fuente had Memphis go 10-3 in 2014, his 3rd year, ending on a 7 game win streak. With that momentum, the Tigers started hot in 2015. A 55-23 win over Kansas in week 2 wasn’t even close, outgaining them 651-359. After wins over eventual MAC champion Bowling Green, and eventual bowl teams Cincinnati and USF, Memphis improved to 5-0, set to host #13 Ole Miss. In front of 60,000 fans, Memphis owned the Rebels, scoring 31 straight points in a 37-24 win. Memphis looked like a legit team that could compete with Power 5 schools for the first time ever. 2 wins later, they were up to #13 in the nation with a win streak of 15 games dating back to last season. The wheels would fall off against 6-1 Navy though. A -3 turnover margin was costly, as Navy just chewed clock on drives in a 45-20 win. Navy would go on to finish #18 and Keenan Reynolds was top 5 in Heisman voting. Originally the media darlings as the top ranked G5 team, #21 Memphis now faced unbeaten #24 Houston, who came back from down 34-14 in the 4th quarter to win by 1 point. Memphis slipped again, losing 12-31 to a really underrated Temple team, before taking their frusturations out in a 63-0 win over SMU. The 63-0 win had…the wildest statline I’ve ever seen? Ferguson went 9/14 on passes for 222 yards and 7 TD. Seven touchdowns on nine completions???
The year ended with an uneventful 31-10 loss to Auburn in the bowl. It was kind of a “what if” season for Memphis, losing 4 of their last 5, but still their 3rd best season in the last 40 years. Lynch parlayed a 3776 passing yard 28 TD 4 INT season into a 1st round selection by the Denver Broncos, successfully scamming the Elways. Somewhat deserved though, this team had just 1 other 1st/2nd team all-conference player in OL Taylor Fallin, so Lynch carried most of the load. Fuente left for the head coaching job at Virginia Tech after the season.
2. 2014 (10-3 overall, 7-1 American) The year before 2015 was slightly better. This team was young and nobody knew who they were yet, as they’d gone just 12-48 over the previous 5 seasons. The media could smell something brewing under Fuente though, as Memphis was picked 7th out of 11 teams in the American, giving them a solid shot at making a bowl. Memphis surprised everyone in week 2, playing #11 UCLA to a 35-42 loss in the Rose Bowl (venue, not game). A 41-14 win over Cincinnati in week 5 signalled that Memphis had truly arrived, the offense clicking on all cylinders with 610 yards and 0 turnovers. After a loss to Houston, Memphis was 3-3 and 1-1 in the American, about to get into the meat of conference play. Easy wins over SMU and Tulsa improved their record to 5-3, and a walkoff FG for a 16-13 win over 5-3 Temple earned them bowl eligibility for the first time in 6 years. At 6-3 and 4-1 in the American, Memphis just needed to win their last 3 games to claim the conference title. A soft remaining schedule consisted of Tulane, USF, and UConn, whose combined record at the end of the year was 9-27. Memphis won all 3 easily, and clinched a share of the American title with Cincinnati and UCF, completing a dream regular season.
They had a wild game in the Miami Beach Bowl, beating BYU 55-48, and tempers erupted at the end of the game, leading to one of the best brawls of the decade. Memphis achieved double digit wins for the first time in school history and finished #25, their first top 25 finish ever. LB Tank Jakes won AAC Defensive POTY with 92 tackles, 6 sacks, and 9.5 TFL. K Jake Elliott was the AAC Special Teams POTY, going 21/32 on FGs, ranking 1st in the AAC in scoring, and hit a 54 yard FG in the bowl. Justin Fuente won AAC Coach of the Year. Memphis football was back!
1. 2019 (12-2 overall, 7-1 American) This team was LOADED offensively. QB Brady White, the second year starting QB who transferred from Arizona State, could hand the ball off to future NFL RB Kenneth Gainwell, or throw to all-conference WR Damonte Coxie or future NFL players Antonio Gibson and Calvin Austin III. The year started strong with a 15-10 shutdown of Ole Miss, followed up by a 5-0 start. #23 Memphis lost in a 28-30 upset to Temple, but that’d be the Tigers’ last loss all regular season. With College GameDay attending, #24 Memphis beat #15 unbeaten SMU 54-48 in an absolute barnburner, Antonio Gibson going for 97 rushing yards, 130 receiving yards, 159 kick return yards, and 3 total TD. And he touched the ball just 12 times!!! That’s 386 yards on 12 touches! Memphis needed to win their final regular season game against #19 Cincinnati to make the American championship game, and grinded out a 34-24 win. The two would rematch a week later, and Cincinnati would give a better effort, but the Bearcats were too depleted at this point in the season, and Memphis scored a late TD to win 29-24 and claim their 2nd conference title in 5 years. #17 Memphis earned the Group of 5 slot for a New Years 6 bowl and played admirably against #10 Penn State, losing 39-53 in a fun game. The two were polar opposites, Memphis throwing for 479 yards and rushing for 53, while Penn State threw for 133 and rushed for 396.
Brady White finished 2nd Team all-conference, throwing for 4014 yards 33 TD 11 INT. He’d go on to finish his career a year later as Memphis’ all-time leading passer with 10,949 yards and 92 TD. Freshman RB Kenneth Gainwell had an unreal year, rushing for 1459 yards and 13 TD on 6.3 YPC while also catching 51 passes for 610 yards and 3 TD. WR Damonte Coxie was 2nd Team all-conference with 1276 receiving yards. Do-it-all WR Antonio Gibson put on a show all year long with 369 rushing yards and 4 TD on 11.2 YPC, 38 catches for 735 yards and 8 TD, and won AAC Special Teams POTY with 28 yards per kick return and a TD. Even TE Joey Magnifico was all-conference.
2019 Memphis is my 42nd best Group of 5 team since 1983.
5th Quarter
What play/playegame do you think of when you think of Memphis? Who was a better coach at Memphis, Justin Fuente or Mike Norvell? Fuente rescued Memphis from the depths they were in and built a solid foundation, while Norvell took it a step further, making a New Years 6 Bowl. How would you rank these QBs in college: Paxton Lynch, Riley Ferguson, and Brady White? How would you rank these RBs in college: DeAngelo Williams, Darrell Henderson, Tony Pollard, Kenneth Gainwell? What’d you think of those Fuente/Norvell teams that were beating top 25 teams on a yearly basis, were you scared of them? And how do you think Memphis should fare when it comes to conference expansion, are they a nice program to add?

2023.06.04 14:58 SickusBickus Hi, folx. I'm President Biden's personal physician. Joe has generously lent my aid and expertise to Jamie Foxx. I can assure you all Mr. Foxx is perfectly healthy - in fact, the stroke boosted his immune system and he's now in peak physical and mental condition. I literally can't keep up with him.
You may remember that President Biden passed his physical and mental health checks with flying colours. I've literally never seen a more physically capable and mentally sound 80 year old. He's more God than man. When he took his shirt off for me to examine him, I was floored by his bulging biceps and rock-hard abs. I put my stethoscope to his chest and I could hear TWO healthy heart beats! Either the man is pregnant (entirely possible - fuck yeah, science!) or he's a heckin' Time Lord!
We then played chess to test his mental ability - Joe beat me within seconds every time. Then he solved a Rubik's cube in a microsecond. And then he performed advanced physics and mathematics for me in fluent Latin. All without stuttering, falling asleep or shitting his pants. I must admit I was in awe of this absolute titan of staggering intellect and Herculean strength stood before me, and even a bit aroused if I'm being honest. My head was dizzy by the time we were finished, Joe quite literally ran (and cycled) absolute rings around me, and he didn't even break a sweat.
When Joe heard the shocking, unexplainable and sudden news about Jamie Foxx (one of his most absolute favourite actors) suffering a stroke, he unashamedly wept whilst delivering an impromptu soliloquy about life and death to his White House staff. It was absolutely beautiful. He had the entire room in tears. I came.
Shortly after, Joe gently pulled me aside (had he not been so gentle and tender with his grip my arm would have ripped clean from my body), and instructed me to attend to Mr. Foxx immediately. Joe personally flew me in his private jet to Mr. Foxx's hospital, where he was already well on his way to full recovery. We spent a few hours playing pickleball and shooting the breeze with Mr. Foxx until Joe reluctantly left, pulled away on urgent and vital Presidential business (sending more money and weapons to Ukraine and choosing which flavour of ice cream he wanted for desert later that evening).
I set about trying to determine the elusive cause of Mr. Foxx's stroke, immediately disregarding and ruling out the safe and effective COVID-19 vaccines he had nobly and smartly received. Alas, despite rigorous tests, much pondering about race and climate change, and invasive questions about how much Mr. Foxx gardened or slept with the TV on, I was unable to find what triggered the minor and extremely mild stroke. I let out a heavy sigh as I scrawled down my lack of findings on my clipboard, before making a note recommending Mr. Foxx for another booster jab ASAP.
Despite this and rumours to the contrary, Mr. Foxx is in great health. Peak physical condition. If anything, he's even stronger and sharper than he was pre-stroke. He's been spending every waking minute working out, playing full-on, hard-contact American Football, and even taking part in some light Greco-Roman wrestling! However, his mild medical episode and the subsequent spotlight cast on him by alt-right anti-vaxxers has left him painfully shy and borderline reclusive, and he now wishes to withdraw from acting, social media and public life altogether. Please respect his privacy. Mr. Foxx has asked me to make a brief statement to his fans on his behalf, reassuring them that the COVID-19 vaccines are safe and effective, and to please get vaccinated immediately.
