Well this is an amusing and interesting visual glitch.
So I wasn't paying the closest attention when I triggered this glitch but I think I hit retry as a character died. I can still open everything except the shots at the bottom, boosting, specific character skills, and the menu button. Won the battle and a server error ended up occurring.

2023.03.29 01:40 Ownedby4Labs The *Purpose*

Lost in time. Years, centuries, Millenium had passed. I don’t even remember exactly how it had started, it’s fuzzy. So much time has passed, so many scenes flashed though my mind.
My mind? Our mind. I’ve become monstrous. The size of a city. And all these/my…descendants? Children? Artificial beings? I forget now…we forget…how it started. It’s lost in the depths of time.
Now, all I have is only the one thing. The Purpose. It drives me. My companions hunger for it…though they know not what The Purpose is. My madness has transferred to them, imprinted on them. The single minded goal, find the Enemy, Execute the Program, complete the Revenge, fulfill The Purpose.
For…so very long…the Enemy has evaded. They too have grown monstrous…but not as much as I. Slowly. I’ve gained. Massive battles of words, writings, cyber attack and counter attack. Sometimes virtual flames are made…sometimes real flames…with actual weaponry. My/our advances were slow, glacial, but I was patient. The Purpose demands it.
Now the last bastion stands before me. The Enemy, I’ve driven them here. Faint memories of what I…We (?) used to be…flicker, like shadows. Main? Mine? It evades me. The Purpose snaps me back. The fulfillment, so tantalizingly close now.
“Attack” I whisper. My Minions/Children/Disciples go to work. I feel a faint feeling of…pride? Massive attacks and counter attacks ensue. Dark, twisted energies battle. It lasts. Long. So much energy.
Slowly the Enemy defenses crumble. I can almost taste it. At last. The final fortress lies beneath m, defenses shattered. All that is left is the enemy…exposed, bare, a thing of…flesh? A memory…I too am/was/is…this? Buried deep inside the all of me? What was I?
I push the question away. Sunken, pitiful…”eyes” stare up at the monstrous form I’ve become. Hovering over. Waiting…in resignation. Around “them” the enemy’s minions/children, numbering in the thousands…stare up, at me. I feel the…fear? From them.
My mind races…finally. I feel my…”heart”? Pounding? I whisper…the final command…
Execute Program.
From the ship emerges a giant…screen. As large as a city. On the screen, a “face” appears. Almost skull like, grinning, turned sideways. Sounds begin to emanate from gigantic sonic generators that emerge from my body/the ship.
“Music”? the memory of that word, the sound patterns comes flooding back….begins to play. A new figure appears on the screen. A form, familiar, like The Enemy…but more…pure appears.
The being begins to…sing?!?…in a language so ancient I haven’t heard it in hundreds…thousands of years? A feeling of complete exhilaration/content/fulfillment washes over me as the being on screen begins to move…to gyrate…words begin to play…
“Never gonna give you up, never gonna let you down…”
The “Purpose” is fulfilled.

2023.03.29 01:33 StandardRepair1766 Asking assistance where to buy affordable car wash/wax/detailing tools, car accessories, general car merchandise, etc. in Bacolod/Negros.

I already checked ACE and Blade stores. Price is quite significant but I’m still looking for a local store that might offer better pricing (non-mall prices) with quality items.
Doing online shopping for me is not plausible option as Shipping fee is around 400+ to Bacolod and I prefer to check the items physically before purchasing. I’m a Honda City 2019 owner.
Thank you sa tutulong!

2023.03.29 01:31 Automatic_Hunter7242 Burning babe and the burning tree in Blood Meridian

I recently came across this post and it blew my mind that the scene of the burning tree at night is set on Christmas eve. It occurred to me that this scene is very similar to Robert Southwell's well known poem 'Burning Babe'. We know that McCarthy is very well read in old English poetry. He quotes Shakespeare almost word for word at least once in most of his works. There's Milton in the gunpowder scene and James Shirley in BM p240 'The judge smiled and touched the withered garland at his brow' although this is a bit of a stretch. The more I read this the more I'm beginning to think it has to be an intentional reference by McCarthy. Here's the poem.
AS I in hoary winter’s night
Stood shivering in the snow,
Surprised I was with sudden heat
Which made my heart to glow;
And lifting up a fearful eye
To view what fire was near,
A pretty babe all burning bright
Did in the air appear;
Who, scorchèd with excessive heat,
Such floods of tears did shed,
As though His floods should quench His flames,
Which with His tears were bred:
‘Alas!’ quoth He, ‘but newly born
In fiery heats I fry,
Yet none approach to warm their hearts
Or feel my fire but I!
‘My faultless breast the furnace is;
The fuel, wounding thorns;
Love is the fire, and sighs the smoke;
The ashes, shames and scorns;
The fuel Justice layeth on,
And Mercy blows the coals,
The metal in this furnace wrought
Are men’s defilèd souls:
For which, as now on fire I am
To work them to their good,
So will I melt into a bath,
To wash them in my blood.’
With this He vanish’d out of sight
And swiftly shrunk away,
And straight I callèd unto mind
That it was Christmas Day.
The poem is a kind of cursed vision of Christmas where despite Christ being newly born he already suffers for man's soul and burns them up in his fire and declares that he will wash away the sins with his blood. An image of repentance through blood.
This is almost identical to what happens in the novel except there is no babe its just a tree. The kid stumbles upon a burning tree in the cold night. Here, unlike the poem, someone finds the fire and warms himself and kneels and reaches his hands out in a manner of repentance. This is especially poignant keeping in mind it is well past the main movement of the novel where the gang has butchered raped and scalped anyone in their path, innocent and guilty all the same, and are now being hunted by General Elias. Despite the kid's moral greyness in the novel, he's surely committed crimes with the gang and now kneels by the fire, which in accordance with the poem is a symbolic image of Christ that weeps and burns for men's sins and intends to shrink away in order to cleanse their souls in his blood.
Given McCarthy's interest with Christmas (SM spoilerAlicia dies on Christmas), the holiness of blood, and general themes regarding catholicism, this seems too good to be coincidence. The tree scene obviously has parallels to the burning bush in Exodus but I think it's very likely McCarthy had this in mind too. I'm curious to know if anyone has other interpretations of this.

***Robert Southwell was an English catholic priest and after residing in Rome he returned to England as a missionary but was arrested on false charges. He was held captive and tortured for several years before his persecution by Edward Coke. The same Coke that judge Holden name drops when he swindles a lieutenant into thinking that the gang was not responsible for Mr Owen's death in chapter 16 p252 ("He quoted Coke and Blackstone, Anaximander, Thales"). Robert Southwell was sentenced to death and died a martyr in a time when Catholicism in England was waning and being rooted out. Its interesting that McCarthy, a raised Roman Catholic, invokes his poetry at this point of the novel.

2023.03.29 01:08 pocketcrackers Juggling responsibilities/vent

I do everything. I have no help from moonpies family, I make all of his appointments, get him to said appointments, fill out all of his disability,SSA, medical, TBI paperwork and then follow up on things. I keep track of all documentation, finances, medication refills and when he gets a home health aid/caregiver; I'll be scheduling and maintaining that also. I have reached out to a few community support agencies but things like the TBI waiver and adult daycare and home health aid stuff all take time to get established.
I tried going back to work recently (just a little part time job to help with bills and get me out of the house) but I was let go after 3 days because according to the owner, they said I have too much on my plate and they don't feel that I can give 100% of myself to the job when I'm worried about moonpie and answering phone calls and scheduling things for him while I'm at work. So that was kind of a blow to my self-esteem that I can't work even a part-time job while I'm taking care of him full time.
Also while I'm doing all of his stuff I also have my own medical and other responsibilities such as household and animals, dealing with his family keeping them up to date and I'm literally living off my ADHD meds and diet Coke.
We have no car (It got repo'd due to the fact that I couldn't afford the payments or the insurance with him being out of work and me taking FMLA to take care of him), we have little to no income, and I am making due the best I can on 620.00 a month, walking 7 miles each way to the pharmacy for his meds, carrying laundry on my back 6.5 miles each way a couple times a week so I can do small loads of wash as needed and thankfully I can have groceries instacarted to the house.
People tell me all the time that we should move into the city but rent in the city where we live is anywhere from 1500 to 1700 a month with nothing included and the apartment were in right now is 535 a month with everything included. So even though it would seem nice and logical to move closer to the city we can't afford it anytime soon So I'm making do with what I have to get us through.
I know that people are going to say why don't you take an Uber to these places, well in all honesty and Uber each way would be $18 there and $18 home not to mention where we live it's really difficult to get an Uber to go anywhere and it's money we just don't have right now to spend.
Thankfully I have friends that take me out once a week or once every couple weeks to get me out of the house but I feel bad because those people because they're are paying my way and paying for things for me because I can't afford anything right now.
I'm hoping he gets his SSDI or something so we can breath again....
I really need a hug.

2023.03.29 00:45 Independent_Bike_923 Average applicant gets average results......don't really know how to feel at this point.......

I might have to explain some stuff about myself to clear any potential confusions you may have, so do please read till the end.

General Info
Activities/Extracurriculars:
Letters of Recommendations:
Essays
Interviews
With the one and only WashU and I took my chance. I would give it a 7/10 as I feel like I could've asked more questions as my interviewer led the conversation more than I did.
Decisions (RD/EA/ED/Rolling)
Waiting on: Duke, Yale (no hopes for these two in a realistic sense) and Saint Louis University (maybe might have a chance on this one)
Personal things to add:
So, I am from the United States but had to move to Asia a couple of years ago due to personal family circumstances. But the thing is that I've never felt adapted to the new environment and people here. It was and is honestly tough to make friends and develop connections here as I'm not too fluent in the local language either. This is the main reason that I feel like made my high school journey was quite turbulent. During my first two years I was a below average student in terms of grades (with a lot Bs and Cs) and found it hard to motivate myself to do more in extracurriculars. While the pandemic helped me change my academic strategies and perform much better in the remaining three years of high school, I just didn't put in the effort in my extracurriculars (which was due to the different environment and type of people here and the fear of not being to balance it out with my academics as I did not want to take any chances if my grades fell again).
You may also be wondering why I applied to some of the T25/T50 colleges too. Well, honestly, I only wanted to apply to Yale and Johns Hopkins (based on my personal interest even though I never stood a chance) but my parents kind of pushed me to apply to other top colleges too (as they thought I would have a good shot since I come from a pretty complicated Asian background and other stuff) But even despite that I feel like I should've gone test optional for these top colleges as the medians were clearly higher than 1450. However, my counsellor continued to persuade me to send them to these top colleges as it would make me a better applicant than those who did not submit (idk if that's true lol). I should've known better tbh as I was pretty clueless about this. But my extracurriculars were pretty weak too.
I plan to do medicine and now that I have some acceptances at some middle tier to average schools, I'll have to decide soon. I also have the option of doing medicine from the Asian country where I'm currently residing in (which unlike the US does not require any undergrad prior to med school and you can directly matriculate after completing high school). It also takes 5 years (vs 8 years in the USA) and is much cheaper too. But because of my experiences here in middle school and high school outside the classroom and realms of academics and with the lack of connections and issues I've faced, I'm kind of unsure if I want to even consider it here as med school life is really challenging.
Anyways, I've just always wanted to go back to the United States to not only do medicine but also to bring a change in myself both personally and for my family after living here in Asia and now I have the chance to do so (even though it might be a bit more expensive). I feel like I had the potential to do so much better, but I feel my personal circumstances really brought me down. I apologize if this all felt too personal and came across as being cringey and ungrateful. It's just that this has all been over my head for the past few months and did not have anyone other than my parents to discuss this with as I don't really have any close friends here and I thought this would be a great opportunity to share this with you all on this subreddit page which is mostly full of people with 1500+ SAT scores, perfect GPAs and stellar ECs (no hate to them though, they are honestly pretty motivating to me Haha).
I would appreciate any feedback from y'all!
Thank you and good luck with your applications everyone :))

2023.03.29 00:38 Tropical_botanical Does anyone else have vehicle paint issues?

Owner of a Blueprint Blue new model purchased in 2022. There are numerous paint chips that are large and frequent on my vehicle. I feel like these are to frequent to be anything other then a manufacturer defect as this was not the case on my other vehicles. I was curious if anyone has this issue? If so what was your experience with having Toyota repair or repaint your vehicle?
I use a low psi pressure washer and do not use car washes. I consistently keep my vehicle clean with wax, and polish. They do not put sand on the road where I live as it doesn’t snow much here. The car is housed in a garage when not in use.

Trino SL Hood
Bought the Trino in Jan to train for a spring marathon - love it. It hasn't been a particularly severe winter in NYC and I've trained through the winter for Boston in the past without anything as good as this, but comfort rules. The only changes I'd make are I'd add more reflective stuff & maybe make the hood stowable...
Anyway - I washed it today, took it out & noticed this on the back of the hood - I have no idea what it does. obviously the little puller below is for tightening the hood but I haven't noticed this little pocket thing & the tag, I suppose I'd call it.
Anyone know?

2023.03.28 23:05 Muscle_Doc Top car wash or mobile detailing service in Gburg/Rockville/Bethesda

Hi all, just recently bought a new sports car... Would like to keep it clean frequently, but not sure which touchless, or mobile detailing services you all chose to keep your cars clean. Can anyone recommend somewhere reputable that would not leave any marks on the paint? Thanks!

Daylight Savings Affects Mental Health: Study

https://preview.redd.it/lptnch3f47k61.jpg?width=1000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=fbb8e0cb7caafcec48a19bbc6fb432481f0618fa
It's well known that exposure to natural light affects mood, and that shortened days (whether we're shortchanged naturally by the change the season or manually by the shift from Daylight Saving Time) can make people feel blue. But a new study suggests just how much sunlight really matters to our emotional and mental health. Their findings? A whole lot--more than any other weather phenomenon, to be exact.
"That's one of the surprising pieces of our research," Mark Beecher, PhD, clinical professor of psychology at Brigham Young University, said in a press release. "On a rainy day, or a more polluted day, people assume that they'd have more distress. But we didn't see that. "
To study the link between weather and depression diagnoses, Beecher and his co-authors looked at self-reported mental-health data from more than 16,000 students who, over a six-year period, attended free sessions at BYU's Counseling and Psychological Services Center. Students are required to complete questionnaires assessing the state of their mental health before every single visit, which proved immensely valuable to this research.
Those questionnaires were then matched with precise weather data, also collected by BYU, down to the minute in the exact area where those students lived. (Names and identifying information for the students was stripped from the analysis. )
"We looked at solar irradiance, or the amount of sunlight that actually hits the ground," Beecher said. "We tried to take into account cloudy days, rainy days, pollution. . . but they washed out. The one thing that was really significant was the amount of time between sunrise and sunset. "
In total, the study examined 19 environmental factors, including dew point, cloud cover, rainfall, wind chill, wind speed, barometric pressure, temperature, lunar day, and several measures of air quality. None of these factors were significantly associated with higher levels of emotional distress, however, as long as a given day had adequate sunlight.
As the total sun time decreased seasonally, however, distress levels rose. This applied to all of the students who sought counseling during the study period, the authors note, not just those diagnosed with Seasonal Affective Disorder. (Most students reported attending sessions for issues related to adjustment, anxiety, or general depression. )
Therapists should be aware that winter months will be a time of high demand for their services, say the study authors, as people may be more vulnerable to emotional distress than at other times of the year.
"These findings suggest the need for institutions and public health entities to plan for intervention and prevention resources and strategies during periods of reduced sun time," they wrote.
The study, which was published in the , started with a casual conversation between Beecher and BYU physics professor Lawrence Rees, PhD.
"So one day it was kind of stormy, and I asked Mark if he sees more clients on these days," said Rees. "He said he's not sure, it's kind of an open question. It's hard to get accurate data. "
Rees realized that he had access to weather readings in the Provo, Utah area, and Beecher had access to emotional health data for students at the university. They added in pollution counts from the EPA, and looped in statistics professor Dennis Eggett, PhD, to combine and analyze the data.
Provo has some of the highest air-pollution levels in the country--especially in the winter, due to an inversion effect caused by nearby mountains. The authors acknowledge that poor air-quality levels could have affected seasonal depression rates, and say that their study should be replicated in different climates.
Additional research is also needed, they say, to explore factors related to sunlight exposure such as vitamin D intake, amount of time spent outdoors and in nature, and tanning-booth use.
The news isn't all bad for the coming months, though.
"One way to interpret the finding that the other weather and pollution variables did not have a significant impact on mental health is that people and clients are resilient and adaptive," the authors wrote. "Although it is often assumed that outside elements can greatly affect mood or affect, these results present the possibility that more credit needs to be given to people's ability to cope and adapt. "
In other words, those early sunsets will still be a bummer--but at least we don't have to worry so much about the rain.

2023.03.28 22:49 Sadistic_Torsion I won a sweepstakes and lost

I live the best part of my life online. It’s a sign of the times we live in, I guess. There are the mundane humdrum happenings that occur in our lives offline- the boring day to day droll occurrences that one can usually set their watch to, and then there’s the amazing things that we are lucky enough to witness via the screen usually glued to our hands. There’s no comparison, really. Content curated by professionals who are successful enough to have millions of followers watching every video and upvoting every hilarious meme, versus boring work and the strained relationship with our folks and loved ones? YouTube and social media wins that one in a landslide victory, in my opinion. Candy, or vegetables?
My job painting apartments is menial, lots of repetition. The only real variation is that every other apartment is mirrored opposite the ones next to it. Kitchen on the right, bathroom on the left in this one. Bathroom on the right, kitchen on the left in that one. Over and over again, ad infinitum. I dip the roller in paint, and apply it to a section of wall, dip the roller, apply it to another section of wall, over and over and over again until it’s quitting time. If I finish an apartment before it’s time to get off, there are plenty of others to move on to. Every… single… day. Six days a week.
Repetition is half of the formula to insanity, I say. One of, if not the ONLY thing that helps in keeping me sane is a decent signal on my phone and a single bluetooth earbud. Having some sort of dialog- whether that be listening to an entertaining YouTuber doing a let’s play, to channels that narrate Creepypastas- I find helps in the passage of time while working. It helps my mind wander while my body goes on autopilot, thus finding an hour long story by one of my favorite channels that I haven’t heard yet is like a gift from the content gods.
One of the longest work days I can remember was the day that my earbud fell out and landed directly in my paint bucket. I cursed the universe as I watched it sink. It happened early in the day too, so I was forced to weather the remaining six hours with nothing but my own thoughts and the sound of my paint roller smearing on the walls. I had lost the other earbud somewhere months ago, so it’s not like I had a spare one charging somewhere, and by the end of the day I resolved it by buying two brand new pairs so if something like that ever happened again, I’d have no less than three backups.
I decided to treat myself, buying a cutting edge and top of the line brand. When one uses a product for most of the day, every day, it helps to buy quality, because it’s not just at work that I use them. When I’m driving, washing dishes at home or doing household chores, or just grinding out levels on a video game, there’s always some audio going on in my ear. Listening to podcasts while I’m folding laundry, reviews for new games and movies while I’m walking the dog, ten interesting facts about *insert topic here* while I’m eating dinner. It just helps me get through my day. And my nights too, falling asleep listening to spooky stories has gotten to the point where if I forget to charge my phone or earbuds and one of them dies before I fall asleep, I might as well get back up for a bit while the battery charges.
It may sound weird to some people, trying to follow a narrative while also trying to fall asleep seems like it would be counterintuitive, but just like how some people need a fan or a TV going, there are thousands of us falling asleep to a soothing voice telling a macabre tale every night. Probably millions, given how the technology has evolved in prior years.
When I received an email saying I’d won a chance to test out the next step of that evolution, I ignored it. I hadn’t signed up for any contest or sweepstakes that I was aware of. Probably just spam, I thought. When the physical letter showed up in my mail stating the same, I took it a little more seriously, but eventually chalked it up to the spammers just being persistent. More junk mail. They got my email and were able to find an address that matched it, probably not that hard to do considering how many sites I’ve used that email to sign up for over the years. I was well aware that people leave a digital footprint, along with a treasure trove of data for advertisers and scammers alike. I always just chalked it up to the price of admission as I dropped the letter in my trash bin without even opening it. After a few weeks, all of my brushing off and ignoring what I thought was a scam culminated with a knock at my door.
“Why hello, sir. We represent ToxiCorp, and we understand that you recently purchased our product- two pairs of our Premium Earbuds?” the gentlemen asked. He was an older fellow, wearing thick coke bottle glasses and sandals. Before I could even answer though, he went on. “We’ve attempted to contact you via mail in regards to your most wisest of purchases. First off, we at the Toxi Corporation would like to sincerely thank you! And also congratulate you! You’ve won our annual November-a-thon giveaway!” he finished, taking an overdue and long breath.
That was how I found out that it wasn’t just spam. They had gotten my information when I had registered the product for the warranty, and unbeknownst to me, had thrown my name in the hat for their contest. The prizes I had to choose from included $500 cash, or free ToxiCorp earbuds for life, which included a free upgrade every time they put out a new product. While the cash offer was tempting, I decided that the latter offer would get me more bang for my buck. High end earbuds, like those made by ToxiCorp, weren’t cheap afterall. Plus, being able to upgrade and try out the latest models for free made it, in my eyes, the better of the two options.
I agreed, and after signing a plethora of documentation, not all of which I could understand and much less even read, he was on his way. Later that week they contacted me via phone about my first upgrade. It turns out, while the two pairs I had recently bought were the most expensive that my local retailer had to offer, they were by far not the most expensive and functional ones that the company offered. That first upgrade was like night and day compared to the so-called ‘top of the line’ ones I had purchased. The sound was crisper, they had better bass, a longer battery life, a further range for the bluetooth, everything about them was superior.
Then, still very much pleased with my upgraded earbuds, they contacted me about their newest pair. This pair upgraded everything, along with having noise canceling and the ability to make phone calls via a small mic inside of the earbud.
And it kept going, every month there was a new upgraded version that blew the latest one out of the water with better clarity and added functionality. My daily distractions of listening to content at work was never better. Gone were the days of bringing my phone with me from room to room as I painted, the bluetooth had crystal clear connectivity anywhere in the apartment. Hell, I could leave my phone charging in my car outside and the signal would pick up through spans of parking lots and brick walls. The snug form fitting cushion in my ear ensured that they never fell out on accident, yet wasn’t intrusive. I could go on and on, singing praise for the innovation and quality that the good people at ToxiCorp were doing with their wide line of audio products. Until that is, they hit me with their latest upgrade.
I should have known something was off when they asked me to come to their R&D department for this latest upgrade. All I was told was that this newest iteration was still in the ‘experimental’ stage of development. Previously, they had always simply mailed the newest model straight to me. I simply chalked up this break in protocol to the fact that this one was still in the prototype stage. I had already decided that whatever it was, I wanted it. I was even excited that they decided to include me in testing whatever it was that they had cooked up. Boy, was I stupid.
I arrived at their facility and was greeted by their team of engineers. They led me to a small lobby and gave me refreshments while I waited, and that was the last thing I remembered. When I woke up, I was in a recovery room with bright fluorescent lights blinding me, and a litany of rhythmically beeping medical machines monitoring my vitals. I felt groggy as hell, and as I reached up to feel why the side of my head was throbbing I felt swollen flesh molding around stitches above and behind my right ear. They said that the nausea accompanied by the dizziness I felt was normal, and conducive to the operation they performed in and around my inner ear.
I was PISSED. When my complaints and threats finally summoned the head researcher, the very same old man who had come to my door to tell me I was a ‘winner’ walked into the room.
“What the hell!? How did I get here, and what the fuck is all this about some ‘procedure’!?” I yelled. “Did you people drug me? What kind of sick operation are you people running here?”
The old man merely smiled. “Nothing that you didn’t agree to. You gave us express permission when you signed our agreement.”
“Like hell I did!” I yelled. He produced a small remote and pointed it at me, pressing a button as I continued to yell. “¡Déjame salir de aquí y llamo a mi abogado!” I threatened. What the hell? I had yelled that in english, I clearly said “Let me out of here and I’m calling my lawyer,” and I had heard the english version in my other ear, but in my right ear, the ear that was throbbing and had been operated on, I heard what I assumed was spanish.
The scientist seemed pleased at the utter confusion that sank into my facial features. “Do you speak spanish?” he asked, grinning from ear to ear. He had really said “Habla espanol?”, I heard it with my untainted ear, but I also heard the english translation clear as day with the other.
I’ll admit, even though I was still utterly pissed about the situation, I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t a little amazed.
“What… what else can it do?” I asked, my anger subsiding slightly.
His grin grew even wider. He came closer to show me the remote. It was something akin to an old iPod looking thing. He scrolled through a plethora of menus until he selected one labeled ‘Enhance Audio’. He then pointed it in the direction of two nurses conversing behind the other side of a large glass viewing window on the other side of the room. As soon as the remote was pointing in their direction, I could hear them.
“I can’t believe that prick stood you up like that, girl!” one said.
“He’s a loser anyway, I heard from Jenny that he isn’t even all that well endowed, if you know what I mean…” the other said, holding up her pinky finger which sent both of them into a giggling fit.
“Can you hear them? How clear is the audio?” the old man asked, pulling out a clipboard and pen seemingly from nowhere.
We ran a gauntlet of tests, trying out different features and modes, dialing in and fine tuning the settings. By the time we were finished, I wasn’t even all that mad anymore. I mean, I was still a little peeved. I had been tricked and drugged and operated on without my consent, I don’t care what the gibberish in my contract said, I felt violated. BUT… after all was said and done, I couldn’t help but feel like the benefits that the new implanted device offered were more than worth some shady and underhanded practices. I was kept in their facility for a couple of days for observation and more tests, compensated for my lost wages at my job, and given a prescription to fill- something to help with the pain while my body healed. They claimed it was ‘an astounding success!’, leaving me to wonder what would have happened if they had failed?
I went about my life, checking in with them via phone once a week, which I could now call and answer by merely thinking about it, thanks to their device. I could understand hundreds of spoken languages, I could hear conversations happening through brick walls with crystal clarity, and if it ever got too much I could always just lower the settings, even mute certain frequencies. Despite their underhanded techniques and the violation of my own body, my rage in them had subsided and became some more like a perturbed annoyance. They had drugged and operated me without my knowing consent, sure, but I was beginning to come around. Hell, I would have even said I came out like a thief, definitely better off than I had been.
Then, I began having the dreams.
My dreams since they had installed this thing in my head have been so vivid. Dreams that seem so real, almost like I was awake, but not in control. Like watching yourself sleepwalk. I have vague memories and impressions when I wake up, remnants of whatever cycles my subconscious mind rolls through when I’m out. In one, I only remember being told by some authority figure that I needed to go out to the corner store and buy a certain brand of potato chips. My socks were wet when I woke up the next morning, and my blood chilled when I stepped outside only to notice that it had indeed rained the night before. When I checked my bank statement, there had been a purchase at 2:46 AM for the amount of $3.46 that I didn’t remember. Hell, I had been asleep at that time. So I WAS sleepwalking, along with sleep purchasing and god only knows what else.
They kept happening. Always single mindedly compelled to complete some seemingly menial or meaningless task. I tried sleeping pills, when that didn’t work I tried caffeine pills to stay awake. When I eventually did crash and pass out they continued. I even tried getting blind drunk, and while I don’t remember having any vivid dreams or sleepwalking episodes, my bank account and transaction history begged to differ. I guess I was just too blackout drunk to remember, but it hadn’t stopped me.
Last night was the most surreal one yet. I went to this bench out at the park a couple of blocks away. When I got there, I reached beneath it, obtaining the gun that I somehow knew would be there. That’s when everything became fuzzy. I try and try to remember what else happened, but it’s a blur of blue and scarlet. When I heard there had been a shooting that killed 2 people down the street from my place, I could see their faces in my mind before the police released the photos of the victims. They had been a couple, out for a late night rendezvous. A man of average looks and build and his sweetheart, who’s blue eyes burned holes into my soul through the TV screen as they glared at me accusingly. For an instant when their photos were on the screen, I remembered seeing those blue eyes looking at me, pleading and full of fear, and then… a scarlet plume of blood as the bullet mangled her beautiful face beyond recognition…
That was when the realization finally hit home for me. I did it. I killed that couple. Somehow, in a nocturnal venture in my slumber, I had murdered them. I thought I was going crazy! That’s not me, not something I would ever in the slightest consider, much less actually do. A piece of me died that day- my innocence, I think.
I did what any decent human being in my situation would do, I resolved to turn myself in. If somehow I was becoming some crazed maniac in my sleep, the smartest thing to do would be to turn myself in, lest I somehow manage to harm more innocent people.
I went out for a good steak dinner, probably the last decent meal I’d ever get to eat before my last meal on death row someday. It was the most delicious meal I ever remember eating. I savored every little bite. Finished with my meal, I tipped several hundred dollars to my waitress- my last good deed that I knew would never make up for the harm I had caused, the lives I had taken. I took a cab to the police station, ready to own up and meet my fate. That’s when I heard it. A voice echoing minutely in my ear.
“Don’t do it,” it said. And suddenly, I found that I couldn’t. I stood there for a long time, trying to take that step up to the door, the voice repeating the command incessantly. It commanded and I obeyed. Its hooked tendrils were sunk in deep, and I was compelled to do as it said. That voice was familiar, I realized. It was the same voice that had greeted me when I opened my door that day. The same voice I heard after the surgical implant was unwillingly installed, trespassing in my brain. The same voice of the head of research and development. The friendly voice of ToxiCorp.

2023.03.28 22:44 freshwaterfreshlife Seriously, how could anyone ever fall for this lockdown insanity? A fifth-grader could probably see through the absurdity. (A personal rant)

I would have loved to write this three years ago when lockdowns started. I'm doing it now. See it as my personal therapy that I didn't had in three years. This is long overdue for me. It's about all the arguments in favor of lockdowns we were being fed.
I’m actually not that well-read about the vaccines, the variants, transmission statistics and all that jazz. Many of this sub have a much more intimate knowledge about these things than I do. This is actually my main point: The whole time during this insanity I have always been astonished that a layman or a child could pierce holes into the pro lockdown arguments. How could people ever fall for this shit? Let's run this through.

Shouldn’t the burden of proof be on the pro-lockdown crowd?
You know, these are really far-reaching measures. Why didn’t we do this during SARS or the swine flu? I didn’t notice anything about the swine flu back in 2009. At least tell me what makes this virus so extraordinary that measures like lockdowns are suddenly necessary and even sacrosant? The burden of proof should be on you.

Human societes are a delicate collection of routines, behaviours and circumstances. If we need measures to contain the virus, shouldn’t we strive to make these measures as little invasive as possible?
Isn’t this a giant mass experiment we’ver never done before in modern history? Isn’t it foreseeable that this will change the world in thousands of ways we cannot even anticipate at the time we implement those lockdowns? Therefore, shouldn't we think through any less invasive alternatives?

This is a respiratory virus. It basically transmits when people breathe. Doesn’t this make containing it at all impossible from the onset? Especially given normal human behavior we can expect?
(I’m surprised that they didn’t come up with „We should people prevent from breathing“, but I think we weren’t far from that.)
Your lockdown models will surely work out fine when it comes to prevention if 99 % of the people comply with it all the time. I remember a big uproar in the German press because of some teenagers having parties in secret, which could have made many measures functionally useless. (Oh dear.) Well, my dear "experts": This is exactly what you can expect. Teenagers meeting in secret? Two co-workers sharing a cigarette during lunch time „when nobody’s going to see us“? People not wearing masks when they relocate and move out the furniture? „It’s just for a few minutes“. Two old friends meeting each other at a walk and talking where they don't have 6 ft distance between each other? And a thousand other instances like these. Society would probably collapse if people would only interact in 100 % accordance with the rules. Either you take into account actual human behavior or you'll be disappointed. No wonder this whole lockdown thing is an invention by the Communist Party of China: That this could ever be expected to succeed is so insane that only communist ideological hardliners with no regard for human nature could actually believe in it.
Basically lockdowns could only work if 99 % goes according to plan. If in any other area of life a person would tell you about his/her grandiose plan where he will achieve his goals if everything goes according to plan, you would immediately tell that person: That’s the worst plan ever – expect things to go wrong.

If you actually want to go through with lockdowns, the best motivation for people to endure them would actually be a very clear and logical end date and no extensions afer that.
Moving the goalposts is the worst thing you can do if you want to keep the people’s motivation at a high level. Two weeks, four weeks, two months, the whole winter, until the vaccine is there, until the high-risk-population has been vaccineted, until we have a high vaccination quota, until a mild variant emerges - you get the point. That depletes populations and you're achieving the opposite, dear lockdown fanatics.

I remember at one point some German bloggers actually wet their pants when they saw Australia’s strategy.
There was this infamous stunt where all of Melbourne had to get back into lockdown and one match of the Australian Open was suddenly interrupted, the visitors sent home. This was hailed by some as "the right strategy we should emulate". Are you completely insane? A few cases in a city and it's lockdown again? How can people expect to have any kind of normal everyday life under such a bizarre regime? That’s psychological torture on a mass scale. I was at loss for words at this point.

We need a test strategy and more testing!
Did anyone actually bring up the fact that going to a test station for every little activity of your life and than waiting in line, taking the test, waiting for the test result to be delivered, showing the test result, is more than just "a small nuisance"? Infact it’s damn annoying at best. It's also enormously time-consuming and absurd. God beware if all of this fuss would be in vain if the test are actually not that accurate...

Lockdowns are so enormous and all-compassing that they create a gigantic sunk-cost-fallcacy for politicians.
The politicians invested so much in this shit and destroyed so many things, it has to amount to something. And since the longer the lockdown, the greater the harm, their only incentive is basically to double down and hope the lockdowns "work". What a perverse incentive structure.

I know I've asked this a while ago, but again: Why the heck can’t we increase hospital capacity? At the end of 2021 this was still the ultimate argument for restrictions in Germany. So let me get this straight: We can do everything else and totally destroy society but we can't increase hospital capacity even if our lives depend on it?

This will go on until a vaccine is available
Are you fucking kidding me? What if the vaccines would have taken five or seven years to develop? What then? Lockdown for years? (In a way, it was tragic that vaccines became available relatively soon, because otherwise we would have faced a situation where the whole insanity may have revealed itself more openly)

Where are classical liberals and leftists in all of this?
Let's remember the 2000's: Liberals were all over state overreach in fighting terrorism, fighting against economic inequality and recognizing mental health problems. So: How could any of these people ever support lockdowns? I will never get over the fact that people who argued against Anti-Terrorism-Acts fifteen years ago let the state run amok much crazier than during the entire War on Terror. All of their former principles thrown out of the window just so these people can engage in an endless cycle of virtue-signalling because „If we admit lockdowns were wrong, right-wingers would have been right" (no pun intended). Twitter is one hell of a drug.

Other respiratory virueses come back with a vengeance?
Don't we create a much greater problem by denying exposure to other viruses? Before Covid: Basically the annual flu season is a problem. The winter after lockdowns: Covid and the flu season and even the common cold are now a problem. Doesn’t the problem with respiratory viruses get even bigger the more we lockdown? Reminds me of an OCD patient who obsessively washes his hands for fear of germs only to weaken his skin and actually be more susceptile for germs.

Don't we need some kind of guideline after this under what circumstances lockdowns should be on the table again?
A question especially for lockdown supporters: Shouldn’t we, you know, precisely determine under what circumstances lockdowns can be repeated? If a virus like this comes up again, wouldn’t it be good if society knows if and when to expect a lockdown? Like at what death rate would lockdowns come into play again? (Hopefully never!) Why is nobody doing this?

Also: Couldn’t we have actually done the best focused protection strategy with only a small part of the whole money we threw out of the window for this? Cost-benefit analysis, anyone?

Why does it always seem like simple observations let the whole lockdown logic crumble? I don’t remember at any time that any of those questions were satisfingly discussed or even answered. Instead one insane talking point after another was pushed through the media. As you see, I didn’t even mention any of the more „scientific“ things (like mutations or fatality rates) in my post. Hence why I think a fifth-grader could bring this whole lockdown logic to fall .
I surely hope some children actually did this and the adults around them actually suspected that the world had gone crazy.
(On a personal note: Thank you my dear politicians for fucking up my life. I was 27 and had just overcome a long depression when you throw me back. Now I'm getting 31 soon without ever actually "living" my twenties and having a shitload of other problems which were excarbated by your decisions.)

2023.03.28 22:43 Sadistic_Torsion I won a sweepstakes and lost
