2023.06.03 12:27 TheRollingPeepstones The 1998 disappearance and murder of 7-year-old Nikolett Szathmáry in Gyula, Hungary

Hi there! I apologize for any mistakes that stem from being inexperienced, this is my first post here. I have been thinking about posting Hungarian cases on the sub, but this is the first time I actually found the time to do it. I will attach a few sources - English ones seem to be impossible to come by, although there might be one or two related to a possible theory that was since dismissed, I will attach these. The following post is a loose translation of information coming from Hungarian Wikipedia and other Hungarian news articles.
Background
Nikolett Edit Szathmáry was born on July 8, 1990, in Gyula, Békés county, Hungary, to parents Sándor Szathmáry and Edit Szilágyi. Her hometown, Gyula has a population of ~28 000 people and lies in the southeastern corner of Hungary, 5 kilometres (3 miles) from the border with Romania. Most likely due to Nikolett's young age, there is very little information available regarding her upbringing, but it is known that her parents divorced and Nikolett lived with her mother, Edit and her two brothers. (Edit remarried in 2011, to one of the police officers that were involved in the case.) In 1998, at the time of the disappearance, Nikolett was a student in the local No. 5 Elementary School, and Edit supported the family by working as a cleaner in local exhibition halls. Nikolett was a happy, joyful child who was very attached to her mother, but she was also very confident for her age and she regularly walked home on her own from school. She liked to go out in nature with her uncle to watch wild ducks, often went to her friends' homes to hang out with them, and attended extracurricular activities like folk dance classes.
Disappearance
Wednesday, January 14, 1998 started as a regular day for the family. In a 2001 interview, Edit recalled the day of her disappearance: "It was a completely average morning. I woke her up, brought her a cup of cocoa, then we went to school together. We said goodbye to each other, she spent the day in school, then around 2 PM, she walked to her folk dance class. The class was over sometime before 4 PM, they let the kids go a little early that day. Shortly after 4 PM, I went to pick her up, although I previously told her I would not be able to pick her up that day. I wrapped up work and headed out [to Ferenc Erkel Cultural Centre, where her class was]. Maybe if I chose to head home instead, we would've met halfway."
Nikolett did not stay behind to wait for her mother. She began to walk home, as she did many times before without any issues. She left the Cultural Centre in downtown Gyula around 4 PM, and during the walk home, she encountered her pediatrician. They chatted for a little bit and walked together for a while. However, they parted at the neighborhood grocery store, and Nikolett continued on her way alone. Most articles say that this store was no further than 300 metres (about 1000 feet) from her home. According to the receipt the pediatrician showed to police, she paid at the grocery store check-out counter at 4:08. After this point, there were no eyewitnesses that ever saw Nikoletta alive again.
Edit was not particularly worried at first when Nikolett was not home in time, as she was known to visit friends after school on occasion. Until 8 PM, the family tried looking for her in places she could possibly have been, to no avail. At this point, they called the police. A warrant was issued for a blue-eyed girl, around 140 - 145 cm (4' 7" - 4' 9") tall, wearing a purple jacket, pink knitted hat, a green sweatshirt, and a yellow school backpack. The Békés County Police Department searched the town of Gyula and the adjacent woods and wetlands, with no results. Hundreds of police officers were deployed to the town to assist with the search. Special K9 units were also deployed, including Mancs ("Paw"), Hungary's most famous German Shepherd rescue dog who later saved a 3-year-old girl in the aftermath of the 1999 Izmit earthquake in Turkey, and participated in the search and rescue efforts during the 2001 earthquakes in El Salvador and India. 3 000 apartments were searched in the neighbourhood, and they even drained a canal that runs through the town of Gyula. Search helicopters were also used. However, despite the efforts, police was unable to locate Nikolett. Police processed hundreds of reports, none of which lead to any progress with the investigation.
The Békés County Police Department offered a 3 million HUF (around 14 000 USD at the time, a very large sum in 1998 Hungary) to anyone who could provide useful information regarding the circumstances of the disappearance. The mayor of Gyula offered another 500 000 HUF (~2 300 USD). Neither reward was ever claimed. Due to the events, fear spread through the town, and parents did not allow their children to go anywhere on their own. Baseless rumours started spreading, linking Nikolett's disappearance to organ harvesting, but there was no evidence to suggest this. Moreover, Gyula's closeness to the Romanian border and relative closeness to Serbia also led to speculations that Nikolett's disappearance could be the work of a local who escaped the country, or a foreigner who just arrived in town. An international warrant was also issued and Nikolett was added to Interpol's list of missing children worldwide.
Location of the body
For the next three years, there were absolutely no advancements in the case, until February 20, 2001. Thatching workers were collecting straw in the wetlands by Road 44 near the outskirts of Gyula, when they found a large plastic bag. They realized that the bag contained human remains, and the police were informed. Forensic experts determined that the body was likely submerged in water for an extended period of time. Police claimed that this may have been the reason why rescue dogs did not alert in 1998 when the same area was searched. The body found was in a completely skeletal state, with only a blouse and a pair of socks. The backpack, coat, pants, and underwear were never found. Due to these circumstances, it was theorized that she may have been sexually assaulted, although any concrete evidence of that would have been long gone. DNA samples were taken - actually, this was the first case ever in Hungary where DNA was extracted from bones. Getting the results took over six months, which confirmed that the located remains belonged to Nikolett Szathmáry. Finally, the family was able to have a proper burial for her.
Possible perpetrators
According to one article, an anonymous police officer claimed to media that "investigators had and still have suspicions about a possible perpetrator, but there was never enough evidence to support a criminal case". A man named Mihály Rostás, who was 39 years old at the time, was the main suspect. This man committed a few murders in the area; he had three confirmed victims. He committed his first murder in Sarkad, a town 14 kilometres (about 9 miles) north of Gyula. After an argument in a pub, he followed and stabbed his victim to death. He dragged the body to the nearby wetlands and hid it there. (This does show similarities to Nikolett's case.) The second case was the brutal double murder of an elderly couple that happened in Sándorhegy, a suburb of Gyula. After this murder, Rostás was still at large, living in Gyula at the time of Nikolett's disappearance. In early 1998, when she disappeared, he lived less than 2 kilometres from where Nikolett's remains were found. Later, Rostás was caught by police and was sentenced to life in prison for the three murders. Investigators regularly interrogated Rostás in prison. According to the anonymous officer's report, he said: "I know why you are here, I know what you want to hear. I want to live". The death penalty in Hungary was abolished in 1990 - Rostás likely referred to the fact that being known as a child-murderer could have resulted in his death by the hands of his fellow prisoners. He died in prison without ever confessing to any crimes other than the three murders.
Another lead, that is most likely false but still worth mentioning, was discovered on August 2, 2021. A man from Gyula named László Horváth was arrested by police on the suspicion of having produced child pornography. Horváth, a well-known local figure, was a karate instructor, and a report from the parents of a pupil of his resulted in his arrest: the 10-year-old claimed that Horváth touched him inappropriately. The case was heavily politicized due to Horváth having been a local candidate for the political party Jobbik. Jobbik, once characterized as a nationalistic, far-right party, took an unexpected turn in the late 2010s: the far-right radicals in the party leadership left to form another party, and the remaining leadership steered Jobbik in a more centre-right direction, even going as far as joining centre-left parties in a coalition to defeat Prime Minister Viktor Orbán's party, Fidesz, in the 2022 election. This move made Jobbik a newfound enemy of Hungarian media outlets owned by the government party or its associates. This was likely the reason that as soon as DNA was taken from László Horváth as part of standard police procedures, multiple news sources jumped to make connections between Nikolett's case and Horváth, a suspected pedophile living in the same town where she was murdered. One news source, Magyar Narancs, correctly concluded that it is unlikely that the fact DNA was taken had anything to do with Nikolett's case, as her remains had no DNA evidence that could be linked to the killer. However, this same source also erroneously reported that there was no DNA analysis available in Hungary in 2001 - this is incorrect. As of 2023, there were no other reports connecting Horváth to the case.
I was not able to find any other possible leads online that has any chance of credibility. I came across an article that details the claims of a so-called "spirit medium", but it only contains information already publicly known, or laughably vague details that cannot be corroborated in any way. Despite the death of Mihály Rostás, Nikolett's mother Edit claims she believes the real killer is still at large, but she admits this is only based on feelings. In the early 2000s, there were suspicions that the case of another missing child, Tamás Till, could be connected. Tamás disappeared May 28, 2000 in Baja, Bács-Kiskun county. However, Baja is about 220 km (~140 miles) from Gyula, and there is no evidence of a connection.

2023.06.03 12:26 deliriations I have seen giants. They roam among us.

I am a Mythologist. It was a profession passed down from generation to generation and I've always been interested in it. The old tales my dad used to tell me about fairies, cyclops and big giant wolves always had me on edge. There was something he never spoke about however. That was giants. Whenever I brought up the thought of giants he would clearly change from cheerful to stone cold, Even fearful at times. One night my dad came home drunk, I could smell the whisky on his breath from 10 feet away. He was clearly in a state of panic as the only detail i remember vividly, Were his big eyes, They were almost black. When it was time for me to sleep I asked him for some tales and no matter how mad he was he always told me something I never had heard of. I miss those times.
He was telling me a story about an ancient fairy garden that produces dreams when I brought up giants. Without a single word he switched out the lights and left my room, Leaving me to soak in the eeriness of if he was mad or not.
When dad left I was around 16. He one day left for a journey to Ireland because they found evidence of something, I don't know exactly what it was but his notes suggested it was something to do with angels. There were very detailed illustrations of them and how they looked and it was completely different to what i could have expected an angel to look like. It had more then 2 legs, Wings were small like a baby birds but the most striking detail was the eyes. They had the same big black eyes like the night my father had when he was drunk. I crunched out the memory for the trauma it gave me. I felt uncomfortable looking at it.
When I got out of college I had a degree in mythology. I had a few friends who were interested but most either became something else or a partner field like Archaeology. One night i got a call from one of these friends. I'll call him Troy. He was clearly frantic as if he was in a hurry and asked me for help, Apparently on one of the digs they had found evidence of something that needed to be identified. My first and most obvious question was "Why would you need a mythologist for that?" He avoided it and said they could fly me out tomorrow, This was in Afghanistan but it was in a more desolated area. So i wasn't too fearful of potential threats. After some time of thinking i agreed and i was flown out no less then when the sun had fully rose.
When i stepped onto the dry sandy landscape of the country i was shocked. The sun was blazing so hot it felt like i would be reduced to ash. I felt uncomfortable and i moved to the spot where i was meant to be picked up, When the pickup arrived i hopped in and after a few hours of treacherous heat and sandy roads we finally arrived to a very large dig site. There were scientists, Journalists but most confusing of all? There were armed guards.
As i shuffled over Troy greeted me with a tight hug and gestured for me to follow him and so i did. We walked in to one of the many research tents and there were very old illustrations, books and more. But the one thing that caught my eye was a bottle that was waxed shut with a rolled up piece of paper. I looked at it and he caught my gaze and explained.
"We uh, We found this at the site, We think it might be a codex or a dating, If we are right and able to figure out what it says it could change quite a-lot about the history of this place, All the things we wondered could now be proven!"
Then i asked the burning question "Why do you need me then?" A massive lump formed in his throat as he walked out, Me trailing behind. When we arrived to the main attraction i couldn't believe what i was seeing. In this big rectangular like hole stood a skeleton. This skeleton was no less 12 feet tall and was almost 5 feet wide. I almost thought this was a joke or an animal till i saw the very clearly blue oxidized copper spear and massive iron brace in with the skeleton. Then the memories flashed of my fathers avoidance of giants. As a mythologist you don't actually think any of this is possible, It's mostly cultural study. By the time i had looked at this thing long enough it was very dark, Around 11 pm. So we all headed to bed. The only thing i remember thinking was "Is this real, Have we found evidence of giants?" And so i passed out in my own pool of thoughts.
When I awoke i heard lots of scampering chatting and most confusingly the sound of guns being loaded. I sprung out of bed rushing to see that the skeleton had disappeared. But even worse. So had Troy. He was absolutely nowhere to be seen, I heard people talking but i saw a crowd up ahead and so i followed. When I stood to see what they saw I was shocked. There were massive trails of clear drag marks but also. There were footprints, At least 4 feet in length. The drag marks lead into a valley of mounds and so we planned to follow them. Our main thought was that troy had taken the body and planned to sell it. When I went into his tent everything was clearly frantically thrown around as if he had scampered to get out of bed quick. But also, The bottle with the message was gone.
I ran out and I went with the group. Following the trails I started to become anxious, Fearful even. Something about this wasn't right. How could he have moved that massive skeleton out of that pit and not have made any noise, Never the less the weight. The spear and the brace was also gone. How was any of this possible. When the trail started to shift it went up a ramp like slope into the top portions of these mounds, They were around 100 to 500 meters tall. When we followed them we arrived at a cave and without any hesitation the group shuffled in. I stood there in shock, But before I could think my legs did for me and I moved in.
The first thing I noticed was the smell, It was rancid, Worse then death. But the second thing was the darkness, I had a torch with me but before I lit it i felt helpless, If I got lost in here without a torch I would never make it out, I would be forced to die slowly, Constricted by only the boundaries of rocky walls. When I lit the room I saw the group was a bit ahead and so I jogged to catch up, When I hit a loose rock and it bounced into the wall making a loud echo. Then we heard it.
Loud heavy footsteps came from the cave right in front of the group, The first thought was a wild animal and so a lot of us rushed out. When we made it we heard yelling and screaming, Then the noise started to muffle till it all stopped. We heard crunching, Slurping. The sound of a predator feeding on its prey. One of the very many armed guards quickly loaded his rifle and the sounds stopped. The footsteps slow this time came towards us and the guards immediately put there weapons up waiting.
A massive shape of a human formed from the darkness, From even that I could tell it was around 15 feet maybe even more. Then it emerged. From that cave a massive axe swung out striking one of the guards in the body and sending him off the mountain, There were no screams, He was dead instantly. The figure emerged and from what i saw will be engraved in my memory like a message. It stood tall, Its skin was a pale stark grey and its features were strict, It had black deep eyes sunken into its head far more then naturally should, Its nose was slightly cut off and it had horrendous scars on its face, But its mouth is what i remember the most. It had a grin with thousands of tiny razor sharp teeth and there were blood on them, It was primal, A supernatural being that should have not existed.
It wore bones with rags on it and it had a brace. It was wearing the body of what we had extracted, Like a trophy. But the final thing that haunts me was what hung off its body, There were twine ropes with body parts mounted on them like trophies, They were troys. The guards opened fire on the beast as it let out a deep gutteral roar, Almost like the screech of metal. I watched as it grabbed the closest person, One of the guards and without any trouble the beast squeezed, The guard turned to nothing more then a red paste and it dripped out of the things knuckles.
That's when I ran between its feet and into its lair. I ran and ran till i found where it had been hiding. There was a small cavern and there stood a bunch of dead grass, Sticks and other things. I don't know how this thing got grass in the middle of fucking Afghanistan but I didn't care. As I ran up to it i saw the message and I approached it. The bottle was easy to break and I thought in my last moments I would read it. This is what it read.
"To all who finds this. I am dead, I am not the body of the monster that has been found, I am rather the man by the name of Lucas Hitch-Wood. What you have dug up is a giant, A massive beast that resides in all places but is mostly known was fantasy."
Lucas Hitch-Wood was my fathers name. The note was in smeared ink and was clearly written in a hurry. I looked at the bottle and noticed something, It was an old whisky bottle. Everything finally clicked. He never went to Ireland. He went here. He knew they existed. As I said this more gunshots echoed and screams eminated from the pitch dark my torch couldn't luminate, In a hurry i ran to a wall and i saw something shiny. There was a watch, A silver watch which i recognised. It was my fathers. I saw bones scattered and i realized he had died here.
I sobbed like a baby till the shots stopped, I thought it was coming back then i heard my name being called. I rushed out to the see the beast had fallen, Dead. Its eyes lay open to reveal the same dark sunken voids I had seen moments ago.. That was the last i remembered, The black voids of that things eyes, Then i passed out, I awoke in hospital and was told i had suffered from intense stress which caused the fainting. As the nurse walked out 2 men in suits walked in. I had heard of this, The men in black.
"What you saw that day is something that very few have ever seen. We have contacted who you work for and have managed to get you a sum of money in exchange for sworn secrecy. A contract will be provided for this soon." I was payed 300 thousand dollars to be quiet about the horrors i witnessed that day.
Now when i walk around the streets i notice more black eyes staring at me, It's not long before i join my dad, The stress has been to much, I'm considering just taking a shitload of pills and dozing off in peace.
Be warned of the giants. They exist and they walk in plain sight.

2023.06.03 12:19 Allowmancer Using Fuji X-S10 for a month. Few comments

I got an X-S10 a month ago. Before that, I had been using a Sony RX-100 M4 for six years. The X-S10 had everything I wanted at a price I could afford. I had read and watched a lot of reviews before getting it. The significant cons were: The EVF, lack of weather resistance, single card slot, and the battery.
I've never had a camera with weather resistance or dual card slots. So I was okay. I am also okay with the EVF since I was shooting primarily through the LCD on my previous camera. However, the battery was a worry. The RX100 had a poor battery, and I had to carry a few spares while traveling. So I replicated that and got a couple of batteries for the Fuji. Yesterday, I got an opportunity to test it during a friend's wedding. Surprisingly, not only did the battery survive the whole day, but it also lasted longer than the 64 GB card.
If anyone's reading this, please test your battery one day before getting spares. They aren't cheap after all.
The X-S10 is bigger and heavier than I expected (with the 18-55 lens). I didn't think it would be as compact as the RX100, but I assumed it would be similar to the a6000. The grip is fantastic, but I'd prefer it to be lighter. Would exchanging this for an X-T30 ii and a 15-45 be a mistake?

2023.06.03 12:12 spanakopita555 Help! My girlfriend has HPV

So your girlfriend went for a routine doctor's appointment and then you found out it was something called a smear test and they tested for HPV. Wtf - your girlfriend has an STD?!!!
You should read the sticky post here to educate yourself fully, but to present a more concise primer, here are a few things in particular that you should know:
(NB: for ease, have written men and women but please assume people with penises and people with cervixes if you are trans, nb or other. I've also based this mainly on positive smear results rather than warts, because this is a more common incident that we see on this board) .
Having HPV is extremely normal:
- 80% of people will get genital HPV by the age of 45, and after a few sexual partners, your chance is close to 100%.
- Most infections happen within the first few years of sex life, so prevalence in late teens to early 20s is very high - almost half of women of this age will have an active high risk infection right now. For all types of HPV it may be as high as 70% for college-aged women. Note that the figures are probably similar for men.
Most people don't know they have it:
- Most HPV infections are symptomless,
- In most places, cervical smears are only done after a certain age and may only be tested for HPV after a certain age, too (e.g. 25+). This is because it's simply assumed that younger people will have HPV and it will probably go away with no problems. Cervical smears with HPV tests are designed to find those persistent cases that don't clear up, and can therefore pose a potential danger.
HPV can hang around for a while and recur later in life:
- Most infections clear up within a couple of years, but some last longer.
- A small % can come back even after immune suppression
- Therefore, even if you've been in a monogamous relationship for some time, it's still not weird for HPV to come up
Do I have HPV too?
If you've been having regular sex (genital or oral contact), even with condoms (which only mitigate but don't prevent HPV transmission), there's a good chance you share the infection. Maybe it came from her, maybe it came from you. Where it came from is both impossible to know and not very important.
(I've not seen data on dental dams but we know that female/female couples often share infections, too).
You should probably assume that you either have her strain now, or may have already immune suppressed it.
How can I have an STD? I've never had one before
STD panels only test for a small number of possible infections, and even if you have been practising 'safe' sex, it's still very possible and indeed probable to have something (look up the prevalence of HSV, for example). With HPV in the mix, there is a very high chance that you have had, have or will have 'an STD' in future.
In the modern world, because of the aftermath of the AIDs crisis, and our increased scientific knowledge, mixed with toxic purity culture, there is so much stigma around STDs. But HPV is something that's pretty much impossible to avoid - even virgins have a small chance of getting it, and with one lifetime partner the chance is somewhere between 20 and 70%.
If you are stigmatising your gf and/or yourself, just stop. HPV is not something you can ever fully prevent, unless you were to live life in a polythene bubble. No sex is truly safe, but we take the risk because, when consensual, it's a good, fun, natural part of a healthy adult life.
P.S. don't use the word 'clean' - nobody is 'dirty' for living their life, and that includes you!
Should I get tested?
If you have a cervix, you don't need to rush to get a test outside of your regular smear schedule. In fact, they may not allow you to do this. This is because smear tests are a cancer-screening tool, not an STD test. As there's nothing one can do about an HPV infection and most just go away, it's not considered clinically relevant to constantly test for it. Cervical smears are done on a schedule because they want to find those infections that stick around, so the person can be monitored and potentially treated if it becomes necessary.
If you have a penis, in most places, testing is not commonly done. This is because it's both unreliable in commonly used methods, and clinically not very useful.
Will I get warts?
If your girlfriend has been tested via a smear, it's likely that her infection is high risk. This is because most smear tests don't bother looking for the non-oncogenic strains. If you're not sure, she should clarify with her doctor. Most warts are caused by low-risk strains. While high-risk strains can cause warts, this is not hugely common so you should not expect to develop them (although it's perfectly possible to have more than one kind at a time, and in different parts of the genitals).
Can we still have sex?
Yes, regular partners can keep having sex, because you will share the infection already. You may wish to use condoms, which are shown to lower the viral load shared between you and therefore make it easier for the body to deal with the infection.
Can we still have oral sex?
If you're both unvaccinated, there is a risk that you share HPV16. This is the riskiest strain for oral cancer, so you might want to use protection or abstain from oral in that instance to lower the viral load in the mouth. However, if you weigh up the risk and feel that it is low enough to feel comfortable proceeding (e.g. she is vaccinated, or you know she has a strain other than 16) then sure, go ahead.
Should I get vaccinated?
Imo, yes. Gardasil 9 protects you against 9 of the most prevalent and riskiest strains, including 7 cancer-causing types and the 2 that cause 90% of genital warts. Although it's not proven to help a current infection, there's some limited evidence to suggest it *may* help regress more advanced abnormalities and support male bodies to produce antibodies against the included strains. Additionally, it gives you future protection against the included types (and you're unlikely to have had all 9).
Men can get vaccinated, too, and it's licensed up to age 45. You should search for ways to get it in your location - it may be free in some cases (e.g. in the UK, if you have sex with men, or in countries with health insurance if covered by your provider), or you may need to pay.
Am I going to get cancer?
Although high risk strains of HPV can cause cancer, that doesn't mean they will. Relative to the numbers of cases, cancer is not a likely outcome.
Cervical cancer remains the greatest risk of persistent HPV (those infections that hang around for a long time) but keeping up with screening means that anything dangerous is likely to be caught in time and can be treated.
Oral cancer rates are rising and it's the greatest risk for men. That said, only 1% of oral HPV infections become cancerous. At the moment, there's no screening programme, because it's not a useful way to identify those infections that could persist and become dangerous.
The best thing to do at the moment is to go to the dentist regularly and ask them to check you out.
Penile, anal, vulval and vaginal cancers are not very common. You may be able to get an anal smear test, but it's not available everywhere. Otherwise, you should try not to obsessively think about this - many, many things in life give us a risk of cancer and we tend not to worry about them. Just keep a gentle eye on your health and do all the things you already know you should be doing to live a happy and healthy life.
Do I need to go on a crazy health programme?
No. There is some evidence that stopping smoking can help prevent HPV cancers, but you already know that smoking kills so why are you still doing it?! There's currently no data out there on weed or vaping, so you can make your own call on those ones.
Exercise, sleep, eating vegetables - all good things for your health and life. But most people's bodies just deal with HPV naturally anyway, and there's no proven routine or single thing you can do to absolutely guarantee anything.
If it makes you feel better to do something, and you feel like making a change in your life, however, maybe this is your wakeup call.
What about my future in dating?
As above: most HPV infections go within a few months to a couple of years, and almost everyone will have a past or current infection. If you are seeking new partners imminently (i.e. in the next few months), you may want to discuss it with them (e.g. check if they're vaccinated), but beyond this, unless you have a cervix and get a positive test result at your next smear, there's no obligation - it's really up to you (there is a lot of nuance here and different people will have different strong feelings on the matter).
What can I do to support my girlfriend?
Thanks for asking the most important question.
Your girlfriend might be worried, confused or upset. Many doctors are pretty rubbish at dealing with HPV-related stuff. Share any information you learn and make sure you approach HPV together in a non-judgemental way.
Ask if she wants you to accompany her to appointments, and afterwards, make her a nice hot drink, get her a blanket, bring her cookies, kiss the top of her head, you know - all the lovely partner things you can do to make her feel safe and loved.
Some people might feel weird about sex after diagnosis so please be understanding and keep communicating how you both feel. Acting entitled and pissy because someone won't do xyz thing with you is jerk behaviour and if that's your attitude, fuck right off.
Sex is not the only part of a relationship and if you need to pause on some things for a short while, nobody is going to die. Sex toys and masturbation are absolutely a thing.
If you are privileged enough to have a partner and a healthy, happy relationship, that is more important than an infection that almost everyone will get in their lifetime. Lots of us with HPV don't have this luxury, so don't be a fool about this - thanks.

2023.06.03 12:09 EGWORANTS Not all Asian kpop stans attending concerts in the west are sasaengs.

I would like to shed light on something I have observed from attending many concerts and possibly explain how dangerous this rhetoric going around currently is. I can only speak on experiences from attending concerts in the United Kingdom but from what I have read online, the same applies everywhere.
I have witnessed non Asian kpop fans make snide comments at any Asian person they see that is wearing designer and attending a kpop concert, they’ll snarl at them, and attempt to rile them up so they can be removed by security. This behaviour was the most prominent when I attended TDS2 in London, I was in complete and utter shock about how many people treated Asian people with complete disregard. Kpop is Korean- 99% of the idols are of Asian descent, it makes no sense how many non Asian people are contributing to casual racism in a space that wasn’t created for non Asians in the first place.
Seeing people complain about “international students” (they mean East Asian students attending university in UK) purchasing tickets to concerts because they feel that the international students are not genuine because they aren’t as loud as them and because apparently all international students attending concerts in the west are- stalkers?
As ridiculous as it sounds I’ve heard people that frequent at these kpop concerts say this. So I’d like to express yet again- kpop is not YOUR SPACE! Asian people attending concerts in the west deserve to go in confidence and without fear of anxiety. Expressing your prejudice for people from countries that you obsess over because you’re jealous that they share their culture with their faves does not make you a good person. This harmful rhetoric going around NEEDS to stop. Also please do not be a bystander when you hear these comments go around, please help by telling people how racist they sound.
With kpop suddenly becoming popular in the west so many people are forgetting that kpop is not western at all. Please, treat Asian fans better and stop categorising them by what they wear and how they may walk or talk. Not every East Asian you see at a concert is a sasaeng- in fact, there’s only very few that are and non Asian people can also be obsessive stalker fans too but I don’t see people categorising non Asian kpop fans…..

Health Insurance Requirements
Ensure you have comprehensive health insurance coverage during your stay in the UK. Some visa categories may require you to obtain health insurance as a condition of your visa. Research and purchase appropriate health insurance that meets the UK’s requirements.
Applying for the Visa Online
The UK visa application process is typically done online. Create an account on the UK Visas and Immigration website and complete the visa application form accurately. Review the form thoroughly before submission.
Paying the Visa Application Fee

2023.06.03 11:55 autotldr China's Micron Chips Ban Is Litmus Test For South Korea

This is the best tl;dr I could make, original reduced by 79%. (I'm a bot)
U.S. Representative Mike Gallagher, the Republican chairman of the House Select Committee on Strategic Competition between the United States and the Chinese Communist Party, has called for South Korea to "Act to prevent backfilling" the market gap left by Micron.
South Korea sent 55% of its semiconductor exports to China last year even asits semiconductor exports have been in a steep decline since August 2022, according to a Bank of Korea report released on Tuesday, cited by Business Korea.
Troy Stangarone, senior director at Korea Economic Institute, said, "While China might face short-term shortage in chips if Samsung and SK Hynix withheld capacity, the ultimate result would only be the further expansion of domestic Chinese semiconductor firms which undermine U.S. long-term goals and potentially the very firms the United States is working with to improve its own supply chains."
On Monday, an article in Chinese state-run media Global Times said it would be "Natural" for South Korea's chipmakers to export to fill the market void left by the Micron ban.
"There is no possibility for South Korea to replace its chips with other goods in its exports to China," the report said.
On Sunday, Bloomberg quoted an unidentified source familiar with the situation as saying South Korea will veer away from supplying chips to China.

2023.06.03 11:54 speroc BTS, mistranslation, and our responsibility as consumers of foreign media. Any examples of commonly perpetuated mistranslation/misunderstanding?

BTS, mistranslation, and our responsibility as consumers of foreign media. Any examples of commonly perpetuated mistranslation/misunderstanding?
DISCLAIMER: I was born to Korean parents, and lived there for about a year or so when I was young, but I was raised in an English-speaking country. My Korean is nowhere near perfect (it's pretty tragic, actually. My reading and writing skill, especially), but I'm exposed to it enough that I have rough understanding of the spoken language. I also have a mild interest in languages, linguistics, and grammar in general :) But please call me out if I make any mistakes here, and I'll edit my post.
I'm writing this because I want to help re-emphasise the dangers of irresponsibly consuming foreign media, and how mistranslations or cultural misunderstandings can misrepresent reality. Especially for such high-profile celebrities such as BTS or other idols with such massive fanbases! I was watching kpop videos just now, and pointed out some misinterpretations that I came across.

EXAMPLE 1: mistranslation, or language-based misinterpretation

^ it's so easy to wrongly project our own assumptions on others if we're relying on mistranslations. I noticed a lot of commenters were commenting on SUGA's \"savageness\" based on something he said that was mistranslated, when in the actual korean, he never said that at all. The stereotype or assumption that he is \"savage\"/direct/cold, while definitely true sometimes, can wrongly influence our interpretation of something he does.
https://preview.redd.it/22vrd6v0gr3b1.png?width=1576&format=png&auto=webp&s=f27554e2354b838c6da9e750871091202af29df7
^ this was a yoongi calling jin \"hyung\" compilation somewhere, where a lot of comments were commenting how cute it was that he said \"hyungie\"
(^not me, but another youtube user)
Of course, if you don't speak a certain language, it's almost impossible to be aware of these nuances. I don't want to blame anyone for things they can't help because they just simply don't know. In the second case regarding "hyungie", there's basically no way a non-korean speaker would be able to differentiate between adding -ie as an ending to a proper noun to make it sound cute "jiminie~", vs. -i as a normal noun ending "But [I thought]* jimin already did that?"/"jimini beolsseo hetnendae?"/지민이 벌써 했는데?
*doesn't actually exist in the korean, added to make the english more idiomatic and translate the general feeling
[if anyone actually knows how to grammatically define -i/-이, please do... all I can describe it as is a noun ending, lol, kind of similar to -은 or -는, that has the vibe of "so and so DID this/SAID this/etc." in the past tense??? idk]
형이 or "hyungie" in the cute sense rather than as a noun ending, as far as I know, doesn't exist, or it's very uncommon at the very least. It's an English misinterpretation of Korean syntax (see the last screenshot). It sounds cute if you look at Korean though English-coloured glasses, basically.
My point is that it's so easy for things to be misunderstood without even being aware of it! Even seemingly harmless or small mistakes can escalate into complete misrepresentations. It's our responsibility as consumers of media to fact-check, avoid jumping to conclusions, avoid blindly following popular opinion, and avoid unfounded speculation, but as consumers of FOREIGN media, it's especially important. Linguistic differences, cultural differences, and mistranslations can distort the original tone or meaning of something.

EXAMPLE 2: cultural misinterpretation

It's very common and normalised for Koreans (and I believe in other Asian countries) to comment on appearance and weight. "hey, you gained weight/lost weight!" While it could be meant negatively, it can also carry a positive connotation, especially if you're close with them: "you look healthy, you must be eating well/feeling better!" < you would hear this from older relatives, "You're too skinny, you need to take better care of yourself! Are you sick? Are you stressed?" It all depends on the context. In Western countries it would be absolutely taboo and shocking to comment on weight, however. (not that i'm defending the cultural obsession with appearance in Korea. It's bad. I know firsthand how this has affected some people that I know. I'm not saying that it's good, just that it's very normalised, not taboo, and usually not meant to be offensive.)
https://youtube.com/shorts/J_mGvqVqzTk?feature=share
🐰: 쫌 뽀송뽀송 한데~ 찜빵같아! you're a little fluffy/soft~ like a steamed bun!
🐱: 왜 이렇게 뚱뚱하냐, 그때? why was I so fat* back then?
*I chose to translate 뚱뚱하다 as "fat" because I think it's the most accurate. You could use 뚱뚱하다 in an offensive way, same as "fat" in English. Chubby also works, but I wanted to translate it in a way that's more likely to be construed as negative in English to illustrate my point.
^in korean, this reads as affectionate and normal. Yoongi's comment about himself is a little self-derogatory, but it's very normal. Nobody would bat an eye at this in Korea. Through a Western lens, however, this could be read as incredibly offensive and problematic. You could read into it as BTS perpetuating unhealthy/toxic weight culture, fatshaming, etc. which may be true to some extent, but it's a CULTURAL issue, not a problem with the individuals themselves. This reads as a perfectly normal exchange in Korean, but in English, it already sounds kind of jarring and offensive. It's not that something is completely wrong/right, it's how something can be interpreted according to very different cultural norms.

TRANSLATORS HAVE IMMENSE RESPONSIBILITY!!

International army are always subject to translation. Accurate, nuanced, and respectful translation is so, so important, because for a lot of people, the translated representation is the only representation we have access to. If you make youtube edits, or videos, or translate songs, your version of events might be the only version someone sees.
- We have a responsibility to be aware that mistranslations and misinterpretations exist. Often, multiple translations/edits of the same event exist. Does one stick out as feeling off compared to the others? (see the second screenshot). Or do all the different translations seem to match up with one another? cross-check sources! Is this an official translation or a fan translation?
- If you're a native speaker or know some of the language, it's important to call out these errors or possible misinterpretations whenever we can, in a respectful way.
- but also know when you have the authority to challenge something! If you've learned a language for... like... a week, and know nothing about the culture, blindly trying to correct stuff is also misinterpretation. Nobody's perfect, but we owe it to BTS, idols, and other foreign celebrities to do our best to be well-informed and respectful.
It's often pointed out how much richer the meaning of some of BTS' songs become if you understand the cultural nuances behind what they say or write, whether it be clever wordplay or clever references or just an untranslatable ~vibe~ to their words. RM especially is the king of this! His lyrics in wild flowe들꽃놀이 straight up read like poetry, dear god.
BTS - DDAENG Explained by a Korean
BTS - IDOL Explained by a Korean
But we have to be aware that it goes the other way, too. Excellent translation/analysis can be the gateway to seeing the same words in a completely new light. Other times, mistranslation can make it so you only have access to a sliver of the whole picture.
Sorry for the ramble :) if anyone has any other examples of common mistranslations or misunderstandings that are popular in the fandom it would be cool to try and debunk them! Thanks for reading, and I hope my broken Korean pulled through, lmao. you don't wanna know how wrong my spelling was before I triple-checked stuff on google translate ;~; shame to my ancestors

2023.06.03 11:52 Fantastic-Chard-7022 Mysterillness in whole family transmitted

On many days, I have excessive heavy urination and clear in color. This happens very frequently and in span of 5 hours, i may go about 10 times with clear urine and lots of volume. During this time, Urine Ph is 8 with low specific gravity.I'm very dehydrated and no energy at all. Excercise / sweating helps a lot. Even during the nights, i wake up every hour to pee clear urine with not much to drink . I'm not sure where is the water coming from?
On other days, I feel fine and go about 4 times in a day with yellow concentrated urine.
Interestingly, My wife after our physical relation also got these symptoms of excessive urination. She too now pees about 20 times a day with full bladder volume.
Now, Our son who is 3 years old also has same issue and also frequently falls sick due to excessive urination. This looks like Diabetes insipidus like symptoms, but we are not thirsty and are able to concentrate urine on some days.
We have done all the tests: No diabetes, Kidney tests normal, Liver normal , UTI results and culture normal. STD test normal, except for ureaplasma ( I think it is common to find Ureaplasma )
It looks this is caused by virus/bacteria as it has spread to my wife and son. My question is what other unrecognized viruses/bacterial can spread through sex , also during pregnancy

It has really unusual round 4-pin and 5-pin cable sockets. I can't find anything much about this unit (other than some base specs on a Dutch(?) site here: https://tweakers.net/pricewatch/274273/super-flower-amptac-sf-850r14he/specificaties/ and here: https://www.realhardtechx.com/index_archivos/Page330.htm

2023.06.03 11:38 VIPLightning I (28M) wasted my time and money on Ukrainian gf (32F) overseas.

First time poster on this subreddit. So if I make any mistakes or needs clarification, please let me know. I could use the support as I'm currently going through cognitive dissonance. I feel mentally drained and weak as I'm also recovering from a serious work injury on my left hand.
Also little did I know that such a beautiful woman like herself with sweetness could eventually turn into a completely different person. I suppose this is where she would be the reason why I give up on online relationships overall.
If you want to find out the real problems, **skip all the boring messages to paragraph 6.
To start off where I met this woman, I met her from a dating site last year on April 11th. I initiated the conversation with her as she had a friend here who helped with the translation. "Yayyy me," I thought thinking I was the lucky guy. Despite the huge language barrier, we managed to hit it off by using a legit site that translates our words privately by real professionals. And yes it gets expensive when it's $1.04 per 100 characters. But that didn't matter to me. Her happiness and positive emotions was what mattered to me. I admired the pictures of her even if she wasn't smiling. But her half-smile in these pictures lit her inner glow. We've tried using AI translator and it has caused confusion due to the wordings and grammar. Her intention was to come to the United States and settle in Chicago before be together and for our meeting in real life to be special. Alright that was a huge plus.
Her not being a social media person, we did not video chat or phone call to each other because we both agreed that the first meeting in real life would then not be the same. However we did record videos of ourselves, shared cool collection of gifs, and wished happy holidays. As I was learning her language I offered her to call me if she wanted emotional support because of the current issues she's experiencing in real situation. But of course she said she'd let me know. First few months I began to struggle to refill the money in the website as I got to take care of bills. I told her I needed one week to refill and my messages would be short. She said she understood my situation and said no matter how short sized the letters are as long as there is deep emotional connections.
**Fast forward to where I noticed the bad apples arise. It all started after arriving in the hospital due to a serious work injury on my left hand. I told her what happened to me. I told her the day I was going for my surgery and she sent me sad emojis on the site. The next day after my hand surgery and high on Anesthesia, I log into the site and she sends me this seemingly superficial message
Her: Of course, I'm glad we met a year ago, although to tell you the truth, I think our relationship is going through bad times at the moment, but I believe things will change for much better when we meet.
Me: I'm glad that we met a year ago too. I hope I understand what you're saying about our relationship. Although it would be nice if I knew why you think it's going through bad times at this moment.
I ended up bawling alone in the hospital bed as my self-confidence dwindled. Also not once did she call me. My family members that visited me asked if she called me. I replied "no" to that and they all were wondering what she is doing. Then I questioned myself if this is normal. And I gave the benefit of the doubt. Next day she replies:
I'm certainly aware of your financial problems, and I'm well aware of that. But I still attribute these problems not only to the size of the letters, but to depth and understanding in general.
Later as time progresses and discharged from the hospital on May 11th. I'm able to go home while still in recovery. 1 in a half weeks passes by. I login to send her a message and I ask her for clarification on what she meant by the message I quoted above. She flat out denied it by saying
In fact, I wasn't saying at the time that our relationship was going through hard times. I was saying it wasn't the best of times
I gave into what she said by thinking that there was an occasional translation problem on the site. Another week passes by where she sends me a selfie with no smile. I complimented her beauty and wished she smiled. Admittedly It was not the best choice of words I made because of how offended she was. So I apologized and made up to her and poured my heart out to her. This is what I said:
Honey, listen. There's something I need to say because realized I made a mistake. I wish to take everything back I said. I'm terribly sorry for the negativity I made about your picture as it was never meant to bring you down. I'll take the fall on that. I reread my letter and didn't add what I wanted to say. I wished that you smiled because when you do, it adds more glow to your face and it makes my heart flutter. Your smile also serves as a reminder in why I find you the best woman in my life. Like coffee, when I get up in the morning, I always look forward to starting my morning with you. And when the cup is empty, I miss you just like when we've exchanged messages telling each other how we truly felt as a distraction from your bad days. I understand and know that you are trying to look better with permanent crowns in which I'm really excited for you. I hope that the procedure all goes well. But know this, you don't need to have teeth when you smile. You can smile with cheek. But when you smile I hope that it's out of pure affection and that it's because you feel loved by this man. I know that you are upset with me and it's okay to vent it out with me if it helps you. I accept that things won't get better quick. However my desire for you to know that the only woman I've ever been in love with is with you since the beginning.
But then when she responded, the messages became superficial and not genuine. She said
I understand you about this situation, it's not an issue for me anymore and I'm just trying to move on. All I meant was that if I sent a picture without a smile, that doesn't mean I have to smile and you have to accept such a picture as it is. And it's the same if you send something or say something. Although you can, again, not accept it, that's your right. And there is no need to change my mind to start thinking otherwise. I thank you for your kind words anyway and it brings me joy. And your compliments are important to me
At this point, it really made me upset because I felt this whole time that she just didn't love me for who I am. It took me 1 day before gathering my thoughts before breaking it off. On May 31st, I send her a very lengthy message about how all I felt as mentioned in this post especially when she never called me in the hospital. I asked where she had been all this time, called out on her lie, etc.
After confronting her, I could tell she was very upset and there was some sincerity. But then she denied everything she did and victimizing herself and also acted like she had no clue. Not only that but after confronting again and telling her that I would no longer refill the money for the translation services, she went psycho on me and said that I declared war on her messages. She mocked me by saying "Oh, poor you" after telling her for the past 2 months that I felt no sense of love. Then labeled me a narcissist, a man who shows love, kindness, simplicity behind a mask in disguise. I felt this whole time she never knew who I was. In past abusive relationships, I've always questioned my own sanity. But she cut communication completely from me making me unable to write to her.
TL;DR The long distance relationship lasted for a full year. On May 31st I broke up with my Ukrainian gf and lost faith in the relationship because I felt she downplayed the situation after finding out I was in the hospital and lack of empathy and love. Need support

2023.06.03 11:19 Afterdisappear Reflections on the Thirty-Fourth Anniversary of 1989 Tiananmen Square protests and massacre: A Controllable Opposition

Thirty-four years have passed since the June 4th anniversary. Although the Chinese Communist Party authorities have kept their secrets and prohibited discussion, there are still people commemorating it every year outside the wall.
But I want to say that the June 4th student movement was not "spontaneous by the masses", but a political movement initiated by politicians. Just like the Cultural Revolution was initiated by Mao Zedong, and the Fourth Five Movement was initiated by Deng Xiaoping, the June Fourth Movement was initiated by Zhao Ziyang to seek justice for Hu Yaobang and attack Li Peng, Chen Yun, and even Deng Xiaoping.
June Fourth was inspired by Deng Xiaoping's April Five Movement. Deng Xiaoping's inspiration for launching the April 5th Movement came from Mao Zedong's multiple student movements in 1966-68, or the Cultural Revolution.
Mao Zedong's inspiration for launching the 66-68 Student Movement came from the May 4th Movement. The May 4th Movement was actually a campaign initiated by Liang Qichao, Wang Daxie, and Lin Changmin against the then President Xu Shichang, the then Minister to Japan Zhang Zongxiang, and the then Minister of Communications Cao Rulin.
Liang Qichao launched the May Fourth Movement, which was inspired by the Boxers around 1900.
The reason why it is said that from the Boxer Rebellion to the June 4th Movement was manipulation by politicians rather than "spontaneity of the masses". These movements all have an essence. They are not opposed to the regime and strongly support the regime. They are only dissatisfied with certain specific issues. Issues are really just a matter for politicians.
Expressing support for the regime in the parade has a very heavy operational color. For example, the Boxer Rebellion’s slogan of “supporting the Qing Dynasty and destroying the foreigners,” June 4th’s actions of “supporting the party’s leadership” and “swiping away the counter-revolutionaries who stained Chairman Mao’s portrait with ink” all clearly showed that these movements supported the government.
This strange parade movement has been passed down. In ancient China, there was no concept of democracy, but it also paid attention to public opinion. That is what Confucianism calls "the people are the most important, the society is second, and the monarch is the least". "Whoever wins the hearts of the people wins the world." Theory.
So in an authoritarian era where there is no concept of voting, how do we reflect the hearts of the people? Of course, adjectives such as "auspiciousness" appearing in various places, common people "eat pots of pulp", "loyal to the emperor and patriotism" and "swear allegiance to the emperor to the death".
Of course, language is pale, in addition to adjectives, but also action. For example, the common people offered their most precious local specialties as tribute, and the officials wrote a persuasion form to express their loyalty with the sincerity of the tribute.
At least in the Han Dynasty, there were records of politicians forging public opinion to achieve their own goals. For example, when Wang Mang usurped the throne, people all over the world expressed their support, and there were various auspicious signs. These are obviously forged.
After understanding the tradition of falsifying public opinion, it is relatively easy to understand that the Qing Dynasty organized the Boxer Rebellion, Liang Qichao initiated the May Fourth Movement, Mao Zedong initiated the Cultural Revolution, Deng Xiaoping initiated the April 5th Movement, Hu Yaobang initiated the 1986 Student Movement, and Zhao Ziyang organized the 1989 Student Movement.
This is all in a place where there is no voting right, inciting the masses to create momentum.
Similar to this is the North Korean masses, who march against the United States at every turn, "spontaneously" for Kim Il Sung, and cry to death after Kim Jong Il's death.
In authoritarian countries without the right to vote, these masses incited by politicians are seen as "voting with action."
What is the real public opinion? In a democratic country, in addition to using polls to understand public opinion, of course there are parades to reflect public opinion.
It's just that in unmanaged democracies, people usually only march because of their own interests. For example, the North American truck driver parade is because of the vaccination mandate for the truck driver group and so on. The French demonstrations are mostly due to rising prices.
"Pro-government" marches occur only in authoritarian countries. The Boxers, the May Fourth Movement, the Cultural Revolution, August 6th, and 1989 were actually demonstrations in favor of the government. Because these demonstrations support a certain policy of the government and are controlled opposition groups. The Boxer Movement supported the government’s confrontation with foreigners, the May 4th movement supported the government’s external toughness, the Cultural Revolution supported the government’s (Mao Zedong) overthrow of Liu Shaoqi, the August 6th movement supported the government’s (Hu Yaobang) reform of the electoral system for people’s congresses, and the 1989 student movement supported the government’s (Zhao Ziyang) Discussing for Hu Yaobang is a step closer to suppressing "conservatives".
A truly uncontrolled demonstration will not be under the banner of "supporting a certain decision of a certain person in the government". Take Qing as an example:
In the Qing Dynasty, there were countless uncontrolled opposition groups before the Boxers. The early anti-Qing Fuming Triad Organization and the White Lotus Sect, Wu Sangui and other forces did not count. In the late Qing Dynasty, there were also Taiping Heavenly Kingdom, Xiaodaohui, Nian Army, Xinjiang Uncontrolled opposition forces such as the 70% khanate of Aquba and the so-called "Sun Party", that is, Sun Yat-sen's revolutionary party.
At this time, the Qing Dynasty needs to launch a mass movement so that the masses can find something to do and someone to vent their anger on. Otherwise, they might join some anti-government organization.
So the government took advantage of the desire of the masses to vent, organized a group of gangsters who practice martial arts, and made up some slogans to let these gangsters beat foreigners.
This trick was actually used before in Sanyuanli when fighting against the British. Mobilizing the masses to resist foreigners is an old routine of the Qing Dynasty. You can see the jingle compiled by the Qing Dynasty for the Boxers, "Red light shines, the world laughs. Kill foreigners first, then kill foreign religions" "God helps fist, boxers... demolish railways, pull wire poles, and urgently destroy steamers. Foreign devils, kill all Slogans such as "The Great Qing Dynasty will be able to unify the rivers and mountains" can be seen to be made up by educated people. At that time, the generation of farmers in the Yellow River Flooding Area in Northeast China, what kind of foreign religion did they know, what about steamships?
What foreigners endanger is the rule of the Qing Dynasty, not the peasants. You must know that farmers in normal countries protest, usually to protest against low food prices or land mergers and environmental pollution. In ancient China, it was fleeing famine and peasant uprising. The peasant movement, which took the initiative to support the government and help the government defeat its opponents, was the first of its kind in the Qing Dynasty during the two thousand years of imperial rule.
Farmers are farming in the fields every day, and they suddenly want to help the government against foreigners. Naturally, someone instigates and writes songs.
Nineteen years after the end of the Boxer Movement, when Liang Qichao was facing his political opponents, he suddenly remembered the Boxer's move to mobilize the masses. Therefore, students were mobilized to protest the Paris Peace Conference, and the May 4th Movement was launched.
In fact, students usually only protest the high price of food in the cafeteria and the bad food. Does the Twenty-One of the Paris Peace Conference have anything to do with students? Obviously someone provoked. If the students really cared so much about the territory, then Mongolia became independent, Manchukuo was established, and the Chinese Soviet was established, why didn’t there be large-scale demonstrations by students?
The May 4th Movement was quite a big mess, which left a deep impression on Mao Zedong, who was 26 years old at the time. He was addicted to rebellion and wanted to find an opportunity to engage in a movement like the May Fourth Movement all his life. So in order to defeat Liu Shaoqi, he finally imitated the May 4th Movement and instigated the 66-year student movement. It also has a nice name, the Cultural Revolution.
It was created by combining the New Culture Movement of the year and the creativity of the revolutionaries. The purpose, of course, is to defeat Liu Shaoqi. In fact, among those students who rose up to protest against Liu Shaoqi, how many of them could get in touch with Liu Shaoqi, why did they hate Liu Shaoqi so much? Of course it was Mao Zedong who did it.
While criticizing Liu Shaoqi, a Soviet cadre, he incidentally criticized Deng Xiaoping who carried out Liu Shaoqi's line. The students criticized Deng Xiaoping's younger brother, Deng Shuping, and committed suicide. His son jumped off a building and became disabled.
The student movement launched by Mao Zedong undoubtedly left a deep impression on Deng Xiaoping, so he also learned the technique of organizing the masses to "express public opinion", so he first wrote to Mao Zedong to show his weakness, and secretly cooperated with Ye Jianying, Chen Yun and others to try to launch a mass movement for revenge. The two political allies Chen Yun and Ye Jianying were carefully selected by Deng: Chen Yun offended Mao in the late 1950s when he launched an anti-adventurous movement, and his home was ransacked twice after the Cultural Revolution. Ye Jianying was criticized thoroughly because of the February countercurrent incident.
It can be said that Deng, Chen, and Ye belonged to the people who had been criticized by Mao Zedong and then came back to "make meritorious service". The three hit it off and imitated Mao Zedong's way of mobilizing the masses to launch the Fourth and Fifth Movement, trying to use public opinion to oppose Mao Zedong and the "Gang of Four". ".
As a result, the April 5th Movement in 1976 was broken up by Jiang Qing's mobilization of Beijing military police and workers with wooden sticks in just two days. Deng Xiaoping was defeated again. It's a pity that Jiang Qing and the others didn't see that Chen Yun and Ye Jianying belonged to Deng Xiaoping, which laid the groundwork for the subsequent crushing of the Gang of Four.
Next came the 86 Student Movement. In fact, Hu Yaobang Wanli thought that Deng Xiaoping was about to fight the conservatives to seize power, so he created a wave of "public opinion" to support Deng Xiaoping. Due to the huge momentum of the 86 student movement, Deng Xiaoping, who was unwilling to make a democratic transition in his heart, launched an action to criticize bourgeois liberalization without hesitation. In fact, it was criticizing Hu Yaobang.
The depressed Hu Yaobang died of massive myocardial infarction in 1989, so Zhao Ziyang organized a commemorative event for Hu Yaobang, imitating Deng Xiaoping's 1976 drama of using the dead to overwhelm the living. That is, the 89 student movement.
This time it was even bigger than the 86 student movement, so that in the end Deng Xiaoping had no troops to transfer in Beijing, so he could only put down his old face and send troops from other places to suppress it.
From the Boxers to the May 4th, from the May 4th to the June 4th, politicians manipulated public opinion time and time again, using the blood of the masses to achieve their political goals, which has to be thought-provoking.
The government's methods of inciting public opinion are also very similar: pulling one faction against another, compiling songs, leaflets, and big-character posters. Open one opening and close the others. The masses are limited to certain slogans and cannot oppose the government or someone in the government.
For example, the Boxers allowed you to kill foreigners but not to oppose the government, the Cultural Revolution allowed you to criticize Liu Shaoqi but not the party to criticize Mao Zedong, June Fourth allowed you to commemorate Hu Yaobang and even called for democracy, but you were not allowed to attack Chairman Mao or oppose the Communist Party, etc. You just have to think about it, whoever wrote the texts about helping the Qing Dynasty and exterminating the foreigners and distributed them among the people, and whoever wrote the texts commemorating Hu Yaobang took the lead in posting big-character posters in universities, you will know who is behind the scenes
We can say that most of the mass movements after the establishment of the Communist Party of China were not spontaneous, but belonged to the "controllable opposition".
The truly uncontrolled mass movements are the exile of the Dalai Lama in India, the repeated armed protests of the Uighurs, the armed protests in Shadian, Yunnan, the appeal of Falun Gong, the 315 incident in Lhasa in 2008, the July 5 incident in Xinjiang and a series of ethnic conflicts after that, To the recent Tonghaina family camp incident and so on.
It can be seen that these mass movements not controlled by the Communist Party are fundamentally different from controlled movements such as the Boxer Rebellion, the Cultural Revolution, and June 4th. The uncontrolled mass movement is more like a traditional peasant uprising, the Hui uprising.
With this understanding, when the next "mass movement" comes, you can simply judge whether it is led by some politicians or a movement not controlled by the government, and then decide whether to participate and how to participate.
It is not to say that the mass movement led by the government can only be used as a pawn. If you have a clear understanding, you can use it in reverse. The mass gathering of 100,000 people organized by Ceausescu is a good example.
And the recent mass movement to overthrow the government in Sri Lanka also illustrates the great potential of the power of the masses. If the millions of students and citizens had walked into Zhongnanhai instead of going on a hunger strike in the square on June 4th, perhaps the political situation would have changed long ago.

Chapter 1 Previous Chapter
The Elf and the Orc exchanged bewildered glances, their faces reflecting a mixture of surprise and realization. In that moment, Raphael recognized the profound wisdom that often emanates from the unassuming minds of children—the ability to utter truths so apparent, yet easily overlooked by the jaded eyes of adults. After all, magic is magic, unfettered by the constraints of reason or convention. There existed no logical impediment preventing him from conjuring something powerful and propelling it with force against the confining bars of the cage, shattering its constraints in an explosion of liberation.
“I have not tried that, yet. I might need to test this out before.”, Raphael said ashamed as he stretched out his hand, thinking about how the flying ice shards looked in games and books.
He shut his eyes, delving into the depths of his imagination, summoning forth a vision of a formidable weapon. In his mind's eye, a colossal shard materialized, surpassing the length and girth of his own arm. Its edges were razor-sharp, gleaming with a vibrant azure hue, radiating an ethereal glow that danced and twirled in the recesses of his consciousness. Suspended above his upturned palm, it awaited its destined flight, yearning to unleash its lethal strike upon his adversaries. As the scene unfolded within his mind, the tangible world around him began to reveal signs of his conjuration. The air itself seemed to transform, its transparency fading into a misty whiteness that thickened with each passing moment. Flecks of snow materialized from the ether, clustering together in delicate unity, gradually forming a minute crystalline structure that gently rotated in the palm of his hand. Yet, when Raphael finally opened his eyes to a gasp of Sanya. A wave of disappointment crashed upon him, dousing his initial excitement. The reality fell far short of his grandiose vision, leaving him with the unsettling realization that this meager manifestation was nowhere near sufficient to accomplish his goals.
I will lend you some more power for the real one. Trust, the childlike voice in his mind chirped.
Eager to unravel the mysteries of the enigmatic voice resonating within him, Raphael yearned for deeper understanding. However, with the urgency of their perilous situation pressing upon him, his curiosity would have to be set aside for another time. Placing his trust in the ethereal guidance once more, he commanded the mental manifestation of the shard to take flight, soaring towards the ceiling. With a resolute purpose, the shard obeyed his mental directive, propelled forward like a bullet unleashed from the barrel of a gun. Its trajectory aimed for the lofty heights of the ceiling, hurtling through the air with an unstoppable force. Impacting the solid structure above, the shard collided with a resounding crash, fracturing into a myriad of fragmented pieces. A mesmerizing spectacle ensued as a cascade of minuscule snowflakes and glimmering shards of ice descended upon them, their descent an enchanting dance of frozen beauty. All three companions stood entranced, their eyes fixed upon the breathtaking scene unfolding before them. In the wake of the shard's impact, a subtle dent marked its collision point. Surrounding this focal spot, the stone bore witness to the touch of wintry enchantment, encased in a delicate embrace of white and blue hues, an enduring testament to the shard's icy power.
“What do you say? Think I can do it?”, Raphael said with a smug grin on his face, trying to hide how awestruck he was himself. “Your eyes…”, Sanya said under her held breath.
Georg's head shook with a mixture of annoyance and exasperation, a visible reflection of his sentiments towards Raphael's self-assured demeanor amidst their precarious situation. Despite the underlying insecurity gnawing at Raphael's core, he couldn't help but emit an air of smugness. On the other hand, Sanya's response was akin to that of a typical child, her eyes sparkling with delight and pure joy, completely enthralled by the captivating spectacle before them.
“Okay, as soon as I shot the shard, we will run in the opposite direction of the cage and climb over the fence. Everybody ready?”, Raphael asked.
A somber air enveloped the trio as their expressions turned grave, fully aware of the life-or-death stakes that hung in the balance of their daring escape. Raphael cautiously pried open the bulkhead door once more, gingerly extending his hand into the unknown, praying that their presence would go unnoticed. Conceiving another grandiose creation within his mind's eye, a magnificent lance of ice materialized, wreathed in a misty aura upon his outstretched hand. This intricately adorned weapon, adorned with shades of ethereal blue, emanated a frosty glow as it spun gently in his grasp, three delicate ribbons of ice fluttering in the air.
That should be enough, the voice in his head said.
With a mere thought, Raphael released the spear, propelling it towards the Griffin's cage, setting their plan into motion. The trio swiftly emerged from the underground, pivoting on their heels and dashing towards the enclosing fence. As the lance struck the edge of the enclosure, it shattered into a flurry of snowy mist, enveloping the cage in a frosty embrace. The alarm blared loudly, piercing the air, announcing the presence of intruders on the property. Security personnel and mercenaries scurried frantically, their frantic movements accompanied by the resounding thud as the lance collided with the cage's perimeter, fragmenting into a flurry of snow and ice, cloaking the enclosure in a frosty haze.
“Quick! Quick! Get the intruders! Get them! No Hostages!” “What happened?” “Damn it, was our free day!” “What’s that at the cage?”
In the midst of the unfolding chaos, the Griffin unleashed its fury, shattering its icy prison and adding to the tumultuous scene. With majestic wings outstretched, it ascended into the sky, a formidable force of nature. Descending with a swift dive, it fiercely attacked the defenders, its primal instincts guiding its every move. Amidst the commotion, the creature felt the sting of bullets, letting out a piercing cry of pain. In an act of retaliation, it seized a hapless man with its razor-sharp claws, lifting him high into the air and hurling him towards his fellow mercenaries. The resulting collision further fueled the pandemonium, amplifying the chaotic frenzy that engulfed them all.
“Fuck, the cage!” “Ah help! “Man down! MEDIC!” “I See them! FIRE!” “DON’T KILL THE GRIFFIN!”
The trio swiftly made their escape, dashing towards the fence. George took the lead, propelling himself over the barrier and extending a helping hand to Sanya, who grasped it tightly, allowing him to pull her to safety. Together, they landed on the other side, the echoes of gunshots and the cacophony of chaos filling the air. Raphael, however, found himself momentarily frozen in place as he cast his gaze back at the turmoil he had unleashed. It was then that his eyes fell upon another cage, just a short distance away. Within it, his loyal companion, Vivian, trembled with fear, trapped and helpless.
“Come down! That’s our chance! Don’t fuck it up!”, George urged Raphael. “Vivian.” “Yes, we will find her when we are in the clear. Move!” “She’s there! I need to help her!”
With a firm grip on Raphael's foot, George yanked him over the fence, determined to get them both to safety despite the Elf's resistance. Waves of pain and guilt surged through Raphael's veins, intertwining with his struggle to free himself from George's hold.
“Ya can’t help her if ya dead! We will come back and get her, I promise!”, George said as he wrestled Raphael further and further away from the estate, leaving Vivian behind once again.
With a sudden and powerful gesture, George's hand connected with a resounding smack against Raphael's head, causing him to succumb to unconsciousness. The impact left an imprint of worry on their faces as George and Sanya united their efforts, gingerly maneuvering the lifeless form of the Elf away from the bedlam that engulfed them. Their eyes remained fixed upon the vast expanse of the city sprawled out before them, seeking shelter within its labyrinthine streets. The echoes of agonized human screams and the piercing screeches of the Griffin pursued them, a haunting reminder of the perils they left behind.
