Hello New Zealanders! (Can I call you kiwis?)
I have travel questions for you. If this isn't the right subreddit, or there's a wiki or travel advice thread that I missed, please let me know.
I have the great fortune to have just booked an extraordinarily cheap flight to Auckland from the U.S. using airline miles. (It's on Delta -- less than 50,000 miles round trip for travel in November, late January, Febuary, and parts of March -- happy to share the specifics if anyone wants.)
My family and I will be there over the U.S. Thanksiving holiday -- Nov. 19 (that's when we land--we leave the US on the 17th) through Nov. 25 (that's when we depart, and, thanks to the International Date Line, also when we get home!). Not a lot of time, I know, but really all we can spare in that part of the year.
My family is small -- it's just my wife and I, and my 7-year-old daughter. We like all sorts of vacations, from wine tasting (okay, maybe not the kiddo) to relaxing beach vacations, to nature hikes and camping, to city life and culture. We also love food, though the wife is a vegetarian and the kiddo doens't like seafood. We live in Salt Lake City, Utah, so we have the mountain life at home, but that doesn't mean we wouldn't be interested in exploring in NZ, too. I guess the only think we can really cross off the list is anything Lord of the Rings related, as my family isn't really into Tolkien and haven't seen the movies (though I have). My wife travels internationally for work a few times a year, and I'm hopeful that this won't be our only visit to your awesome country, but I think we have to assume that this will be a once-in-a-lifetime trip for us.
I've looked through the generic New Zealand travel sites, but don't have a really good feeling for what a reasonable itinarary looks like for our time there. Right now, I have the following questions:
1) Is it worth it to try to get to the South Island at all? Or should we just focus on stuff in the north. In other words, is there anything in the south that we absolutely can't miss, and worth the travel time and cost?
2) I was looking at a couple of sites that offer campervans or RVs at reasonable cost. We own an RV and are used to driving and sleeping in it. Is that a good way to explore the North Island? Are there ample places to park and/or campgrounds near cities or attractions? Or would staying in hotels and using public transit / taxis / car rentals be better? I'm pretty sure we don't want to stick just to Auckland, but on the other hand if driving a 6-8 meter campervan or RV around, and finding a place to park it while we're at attractions is going to be a huge hassle, then we'll consider alternatives.
3) For stuff to do, I'm fairly certain we'll want to check out Waitomo caves (my daughter, who's obsessed with nature, will want to check out the glow worms!) snorkel on Poor Knights Islands, and have a beach day (Hot Water Beach? some place else?). We might want to check out Waiheke Island, hike in Egmont National Park, and have a Maori experience at some place like Te Pa Tu, or take a whale watching or other cruise or ferry. Any thoughts on any of those activities? What should we do in Auckland? Is Wellington worth visiting? If we were to do something like a wine tasting, or want to hang out at a brewery, is that OK for kids? Are kids admitted to those places? Are there kids activities in pubs/breweries/wineries? What else should be on our bucket list?

2023.06.02 05:08 Retired_Autist Saw a GIANT shark fin the other day

Cocoa Beach Fl. on memorial day, I was out just sitting hoping for a wave. Maybe 30ft in front of me a gnarly looking fin, like a bit torn up, weathered looking I guess, comes up out of the water and just slowly goes along for a few seconds. Hard to tell sizes of things at distance in the ocean but I’d guess the fin was 2-2 2/1 ft tall. I’ve seen lots of shark fins in Fl. You’ll see em once a week if you’re out a lot, they’re usually small but wow I had no idea we had sharks like that in the area. It was very surreal, like I didn’t panic nor was I even startled at all I was just very aware I just saw a massive shark near me. There were tons of surfers and swimmers out but no one that close to me, no one else saw. I pretty much just lazily caught the next couple waves in. First time I’ve ever gone in from seeing a shark. It’s weird, it didn’t scare me and I’m actually going out tomorrow, but I keep thinking about it. One time I saw a Grizzly in the wild and had the same feeling, it’s just very surreal being so immediately close to a massive predator with nothing separating you from them.

2023.06.01 18:21 Do-a-back-flip Where should I (f34) settle down with my child (m2)?

I am at a crossroads in my life and I need to make a final decision on where I should raise my son. It’s hard to plan for the long term future when I don’t know where we will physically be. The issue is, I don’t really have a “home”.
Backstory: I was born in Virginia, and moved to California with my Mom at 13. The rest of my family remained on the east coast. I “came of age” in California and loved living there. I moved away due to being priced out (Bay Area 2014 was the last time I lived in CA).
I have moved nearly 40 times in my life, and I’m currently in Texas, which is the 8th state I have lived. My child was born here but I really don’t foresee staying here forever. I moved here on a whim in 2020, I have no friends or family close by, I’m not a fan of the weather and I’m worried it’s not the best place for my kid to grow up.
My family is scattered all over the east coast- VA, MD, FL… and my son’s father’s family is in Southern California. So Texas is a good central location between extended family.
Here are more details: I don’t think we could afford to live in California, but we have family and friends there. My kid’s dad doesn’t want us to go to the east coast because it’s so far away from his family.
I lived in Oregon for years, have strong friendships there, and loved it, but it’s so far from both families.
If we live away from a coast, I would prefer to live closer to a large city, if I’m on a coast, City proximity doesn’t matter.
I have thought about staying somewhere in the central US but with different weather and more left leaning policies(let’s not get into why). A city I have highly considered is Ft. Collins, CO.
My job is remote and very secure, I make over 70k, and I don’t plan to buy a home in the immediate future or maybe at all. So I make a decent income and I am looking to rent long term.
If you have any advice or recommendations of where I should bring my family, I appreciate the input.

Official unemployment figures for the Fort Lauderdale economy were updated today. Numbers for March have been finalized and preliminary figures for April have now been made available.

The unemployment rate remained flat at 2.5% in March. 10,003 positions were added, but 10,559 workers entering the labor force balanced out the unemployment rate. The overall Nonfarm Payrolls figure did not change significantly. No individual sector saw significant employment changes.

I am a vibrant 78 year old woman and I have travelled internationally for most of my life so I am not easily intimidated by the challenges that air travel can involve. That said, I have never experienced a worse airline anywhere in the world and I strongly recommend that you pay whatever the cost to travel by any other airline but Spirit. I chose them to travel to Virginia from Texas because the flight times were convenient and my outgoing flights worked just as planned. My return flight experience was a total nightmare. The hub for Spirit is Ft. Lauderdale Fl. When I checked my luggage in Richmond, my bag was one pound over the 40 lb. limit and the Spirit representative told me i would have to remove and carry items to reduce the weight or pay for a second bag. That was only the beginning but it was the least of my problems.
We flew to Ft. Lauderdale for my connecting flight to Austin, and right up to departure time the monitor at the gate said the flight was on time. At the time the flight was supposed to be boarding I asked the representative at the gate if I had missed an announcement of a delay and without even looking at me, she said the flight was cancelled. There was nothing on the monitor to indicate the flight was not leaving. She was rude and unhelpful when I asked if there were later flights. I found a customer service desk for Spirit and the two women reps were chatting and ignored me for several minutes. When one of them finally checked on flights to Austin, she said my best option was to fly to Baltimore and connect to Austin there, getting me home at midnight instead of 6 pm. So I waited for 5 hours to fly to Baltimore and when I got there I found that the flight to Austin was not the same day. I had to spend the night. In Baltimore . I asked a Spirit rep if they could recommend a hotel and she was rude and said I should have arranged that in Ft. Lauderdale even though I had no idea I was spending the dight in Baltimore. By this time it was midnight since the plane was late leaving Ft. Lauderdale. A woman in baggage claim helped me identify a hotel and I spent $20 on a cab and $140 on a hotel. The next morning I flew to Austin and of course my luggage was lost. In the true spirit of Spirit the representative I tried to get to file a claim acted rude, as if I had lost my own luggage. So by the time I got home, without my luggage I had been traveling for 26 hours for a flight that was supposed to take 5 hours with a layover. The Spirit employees main goal is to get you out of their face. I thought it was due to poor training, but I soon realized that they already know the system doesn't work to help their passengers so they don't even try. They just cop an attitude and tell you you're out of luck. And if you call on the phone, the call center is somewhere where no one speaks English. Not a coincidence. It is part of the plan built into the Spirit system.
This trip was the most expensive I have ever incurred flying to Richmond where my daughter lives. In the end for the cost of the tickets, the baggage fees, the seat fees and the hotel and cab fare, I spent more than $800. I could have flown 1st class on any other carrier for less. The stress and exhaustion of traveling for 26 hours and being treated horribly by every Spirit employee is something I can't describe other than as my worst nightmare. The Department of Transportation needs to do something to end the abusive practices of Spirit Airlines. They claim to be an economical airline but in fact they are a bait and switch business. Avoid them at all costs.

2023.05.27 23:14 jessedelbono Question About Unattaching Tow Vehicle

Hey all,
I'm hoping someone can help shed some light on this. We rented a drivable RV this year but for a multitude of reasons, I'd like to look into doing a towable trailer in 2024.
I know the official rules state that tow vehicles must stay attached BUT I saw a majority of towable trailers disconnected. The official rules also said that you can't have / use external generators (which so many people, including us, had) sooooo...
In any case, did you have experience with this? Is it just low key allowed? Can we keep the tow vehicle in the campgrounds (I saw a fair few amount of tow vehicles parked near the mesa etc...)? Or do we have to buy a separate parking pass?
Thanks for any info / help.
We're looking at getting a LONG towable trailer so the tow vehicle can't stay attached and fit in the 45' space.
