2023.06.03 21:15 Good_Bench_2201 WIBTA for calling community service on my neighbor’s for their cats being in my yard?

My SO and I live in the suburbs on 1/5 acre lots. We bought the house in 2018 and the previous owners left a note that they take care of some of the TNR (trapped neutered released) cats in the neighborhood. It was just two siblings that are pretty helpless as is so we just went along with it. We even called the organization that TNRs these cats just to make sure that caretaking them wasn’t unlawful or anything. They’re chill, don’t cause fights, and just kinda hang out. We’ve spoken to all our neighbors and have let them know if there’s ever an issue we’ll reconsider caretaking them. So far everything has been fine.
Fast forward to October of last year and a new couple moves into the rental home next door. In February two young (1 yr old~) unfixed male cats start crying in our windows at our cat and dog. They had collars, were social and everything. We noticed our neighbor’s garage was cracked so we knocked on their door and found out it’s their cats. It was late but I briefly let them know that I didn’t really want them in my yard because they’re antagonizing our inside pets. They claimed they had a farm where they could live and would bring them there.
They go away for two months then once the weather warms up they return. For about a week we just dealt with it hoping that if we shoo them away enough times either the cats or neighbors will get the idea but no success. Then one of them came into our backyard and attacked one of the ferals. I decided to send a text with the video of the fight and made it very clear I don’t want them on our property. I never got a reply. Our ferals start not showing up.
A week goes by and we leave for a 10 day vacation. The first day back the cats are once again crying in our windows. I catch the husband outside and tell him once again they’re not allowed on our property and I don’t agree with them being outside unfixed. He claimed he’s trying to find them a home but nobody wants them. He also claimed they can’t go inside because they pee everywhere. He’s convinced they’re feral even though on our first encounter in February we were able to pet them and they were rubbing up on us. I let him know that they’re not feral they’re just unfixed males. They’re known to mark everywhere. He asked for a few days and says he’ll work something out.
Five days later (yesterday) they show up again. We’re shooing them away and I can see the husband in his backyard. I told him to get his cats. I told him this is the last warning and if they show up again I’ll call community service to report them. We both get upset.
It’s important to note that our town has running at large laws defined by no pets off your property off a leash. Nobody has outside cats here except for the TNR cats other people take care of (they all have a clipped ear). I’ve never called authorities on anyone and it’s not something I want to do I just feel like I have no choice.

2023.06.03 21:00 The_Fallen_1 [THJVerse] Arcane Starfarers - ep 39 - Unification

First / Previous / Next
-----------------------------
Despite still being on duty, as Daniel stepped foot onto Olinath Orbital, he felt a wave of relief and relaxation, finally free from the weight of the recent events. He looked to his side as Oprin stepped into the station, who began to look around in wonder at the much larger structure that didn't feel as tight as either the ship or the bunkers. She continued on forward, watching some of the Navy personnel out of the window as they worked, performing initial checks and maintenance on the exterior of the Trailmaker. The pair continued to walk down the docking arm until they reached the main body of the station, where things began to open up further, with many wide and long corridors allowing large groups of people to travel easily, with some smaller ones branching off, allowing access to some of the less busy areas.
Most of the people walking around were Navy personnel, either services the docked ships or the station itself, though there was the odd group of Langan exploring their new temporary home. The pair continued on past them though, heading towards the centre of the station where they were both needed. Daniel guided Oprin to the nearest treadmill, which they both hopped into, speeding up their walk down the long corridor as they made their way to the central hall, stopping a short walk away which they walked unassisted.
As the pair entered the room, they were greeted to the sight of a large crowd, bursting with activity, that upon further inspection turned out to be a few hundred Langan, conversing with a number of UPC officials and three Deities, the first being Celenamartra, but the other two being Deities that Daniel had never met before, though he could identify them by their appearances matching their pictures well.
"I know Celenamartra, but who are the other two?" Oprin asked.
"The large Blue Dragon is Liathock, the God often popularly worshipped by those interested in space and exploration, history, and the mysteries of the world around us, and the Elven woman is Valan'srah, the Goddess often associated with trade, commerce, and powerful magic," Daniel explained.
"Are they nice like Celenamartra?"
"From what I've heard, all the Deities are nice, though they sometimes work in confusing ways that don't always make sense that can leave some people frustrated and annoyed."
"I see…" she replied, getting slightly worried about their reason for being here.
"It's been a long time since any number of them were together in public off of Earth though. Either they wanted to give you a really warm welcome, or they're planning something," Daniel concluded.
"Like what?"
"I have a guess, but I don't want to get your hopes up."
“So you think something good will happen?” Oprin asked.
“Most likely. They tend to only act to do good. It’s usually when they don’t act that people can be disappointed.”
“I see…” she trailed off, looking at some of the people in the crowd. “I don’t recognise everyone here, and some of them look quite healthy…. Did we wake some of them up? Excuse me a moment.”
“Of course,” Daniel replied as she headed into the crowd. He then began to look around, quickly spotting Captain Harris standing at the side of the room on her own, so he headed over, making sure he was still easily spottable to Oprin in case she started looking for him. “Captain.”
“Lieutenant Commander,” Captain Harris replied. “How are you finding things so far?”
“I’ve admittedly only just arrived. Had a report to write and some drama around the sleeping quarters to deal with.”
“Sergeant Richards?” the Captain asked.
“I don’t know his name, but I know he works in engineering. Tall and quite muscular, but I get the feeling he does heavy lifting and not the bulk of the thinking.”
“Thanks for setting him straight before the other senior officers descended on him.”
“You’re welcome, Captain. On another note, am I correct in thinking that some of the Langan here were from cryo pods?”
“Mhm. 187 pods failed in transit, and the occupants woke up.”
“No deaths?”
“None,” she confirmed.
“Those pods are something else….”
“They’re very simple, and Langan biology seems particularly resilient to rapid freezing, though it’s evidently a random quirk rather than an evolutionary advantage given how quickly they need to be frozen to survive.”
“They’re very lucky then.”
“Indeed,” the Captain agreed.
“So, what happens now?”
“Overseer Tenmus and a few Langan politicians that have been woken up are working out some finer details that were put as delayed negotiation points on the original offer to join the UPC. Political structures and integration targets, that sort of thing.”
“Do you think there’s going to be any issues?”
“That depends on the old politicians. The government they were a part of was an oligarchic meritocracy, and we’re a social capitalist democracy. It’s going to cause some integration pains if they stick to that, but given that the old government doesn’t exactly have a lot of power, and a lot of the Langan that are awake don’t exactly revere them, things might change.”
“What about the sleeping ones? Do you think they might have a lot of their elite still frozen that will disagree?”
“They were in Bunker 02. There were no intact pods in that one, despite being designed to be the safest of the lot.”
“Ah, yes, the one with too much concrete to shield them,” Daniel replied, remembering the video of the improperly supported ceiling resting on top of thousands of smashed cryo pods. “I wonder how many bunkers would have survived if they’d figured out the importance of rebar.”
“Nine bunkers were lost due to structural failure. There’s no guarantee that they wouldn’t have succumbed to any of the other many issues the other bunkers did, which some likely would have, but they might have made it,” she replied. “There’s also no guarantee that the rebar they would have used would have been suitable for weather that cold. It could have caused uneven contractions that might have caused cracks to form faster.”
“Maybe…” Daniel sighed, trying not to focus on the loss of life.
The room suddenly grew quiet as one of the doors to the room opened, and four Langan walked in, one of which was Overseer Tenmus, as well as a number of UPC officials, including the President of the UPC: a tall male Human who was noticeably aged, but Daniel knew was undergoing immortality treatments every so often. A microphone was presented to the Overseer, and he cleared his throat as he prepared to speak.
"Welcome all in attendance. It is with great privilege that I can declare that the Langan people have officially joined the UPC," Overseer Tenmus announced, gaining cheats from the crowd of Langan, and claps from everyone else in attendance. "There will be some changes, but given what we've all been through, I'm sure you'll all agree that change is most welcome. Going forward, we shall be changing how we decide who is in charge, and nominating people into the UPC's political forms, of which we currently have a seat in both the two main bodies to ensure fair representation, with more seats available once our population increases so that we are no longer a minor colony. These positions will be filled by a vote of all people on our new home. These votes will happen shortly after the celebrations.
"We have also decided to switch our local government to a similar system, with a transitional period of ten years from the current leadership to ensure the initial stages go smoothly, with votes occurring every five years after that. A technological enlightenment program has been established, and the plan is for students in schools to be taught about the new technologies, while analogues for what we have been used to will be made available so there isn't a harsh transition. Learning about the new technologies is encouraged however, as they provide many benefits. All other details of the agreement remain unchanged, and the vote on naming our new planet is still planned to be held once everyone has been woken up. With that, I thank you for listening, and I will now hand over to President Finley."
There was another round of cheers and clapping as the Human President stepped forward, quickly shaking hands with the Overseer as he took the microphone.
"Thank you, Overseer Tenmus," the President began, glancing at the camera at the back of the room. "There has been a dream from long before the peoples of the UPC reached the stars that one day we would find that we are not alone out there. We knew there was a strong chance we weren't, but despite us looking, the Universe was always silent. Today, however, we now know that we are not alone, and I am proud that we can stand hand-in-hand with people from another world, and that we can work together to make the Universe a better place. The UPC stands fully committed to supporting the Langan people as they grow, and our hand is outstretched so we may stand side by side as one people. Today marks a turning point in history that will be remembered for millennia. Thank you all for listening."
There was an awkward momentary shuffle as the three Deities walked over to the microphone, positioning themselves in front of the camera, the size of the two Dragons forcing it to be tilted upwards so that a window overlooking the planet below was in shot.
"Greetings, everyone," Celenamartra began. "Today, the three of us have met with many of the Langan people, heard their plights, and listened about many of their woes. Their world was far outside our jurisdiction, and I am saddened to see what happened because of that. However, the Langan people now have the full support of all Deities."
"We all agree that we should help them," Valan'srah added. "They have lost too much to start over with no help from us."
"And I'm sure many of you feel that you'd want to help in any way you can after what they've been through," Liathock took over. "Too often do tragedies happen, but their entire home becoming uninhabitable through no fault of their own is an unspeakable tragedy."
"Which is why we're committed to doing what we can to help them," Celenamartra continued. "During the rescue efforts, a number of plant seeds and animal eggs were recovered from their home, and the plan was to use them to slowly terraform their new home. There’s not enough to restore the full biodiversity they were used to, but there is enough to create a stable biosphere. It would be a slow process that would have left the Langan people station-bound for months or likely even years, and would take decades to complete. The UPC has already brought the planet into a position where the process can start, so we thought we ought to do our part."
The crowd began to murmur in disbelief as the planet behind the Deities began to turn greener and greener, until the once rocky surface was completely transformed into a lush forest that spanned almost the whole planet, only stopping at the oceans, frozen poles, and a thin strip of desert near the equator. Daniel couldn't help but smile to himself as his earlier guess proved to be right.
"We are now equally committed to the Langan as we are to any other people, and we will ensure that they get the help they need. Thank you for listening," Valan'srah concluded, heading off camera with the other two Deities.
-----------------------------
"Hey, so, do you think they're expecting us to worship them now?" Oprin asked Daniel as they headed towards the hangar they had been directed to.
"Probably not. The Deities have never been ones to ask for worship, and have even discouraged it at times," he replied, checking which shuttle they were on. "At most they'd like to be respected as Deities, or an equivalent that is suitable in your culture."
"I think they will get that," Oprin assured him, entering the hangar.
Daniel led her over to their shuttle, which was a medium sized cargo shuttle that had a small prefabricated house attached to its cargo mounting point. After they boarded, a few more Langan joined them on board, and the shuttle took off, sliding out of the hangar and immediately heading for the planet. The ride was relaxingly smooth compared to the ones from the Langan's old home, and before too long, they reached the green plain near a large river that was destined to be where the first Langan settlement was established. The house was dropped off at its designated spot, where a waiting team quickly installed it, and the shuttle then landed to let its passengers disembark.
As Daniel and Oprin stepped on onto the grass-like plant growth beneath them, Oprin took in a deep breath of fresh air, and sat herself down, looking up at the sky as shuttles flew past, delivering people, supplies, and more buildings. She watched as a particularly large ship floated down to the nearby river, depositing the foundations of a water treatment plant, which it then began to construct properly. She then watched as a freighter dropped off a series of large buildings, with a hospital, a school, and a UPC embassy being the three dropped off close enough for her to make out.
"It's really over now, isn't it?" Oprin asked.
"Yes, it is," Daniel confirmed, sitting down next to her. "It might take a little while for things to properly settle into the new normal, but you're not in any danger anymore."
"I'm not wasting your time, am I?"
"No, my current duty is to help the person who helped us. Basically, you've got me for a few days to help you with whatever you need."
“So I have a servant?”
“I guess,” Daniel shrugged.
Oprin let out a small chuckle before watching more buildings be installed. “I’m surprised by how many buildings you have already if this wasn’t something that the UPC planned to happen today.”
“The station in orbit is designed to quickly churn out most buildings needed for the early colonisation phase. All you need to do is feed the factories with the right resources, and even the larger prefabs can be churned out in under half an hour. The prefabs aren’t exactly as good as properly built structures, but they are still pretty good. I don’t know the resource situation, but I doubt we’ll get everything needed to wake up all the cryo pods before the stockpiles run out and more have to be shipped in.”
“It looks like there's more than enough for a thousand people already though.”
“Ture, but bear in mind there will be some other people from the UPC living here to work in the power plant, water treatment, hospital, and so on. We can’t just dump foreign tech on you and expect everything to go smoothly, can we?”
“I suppose…. Hey, do you think my new house is installed yet?” she asked.
“No idea. Wanna find out?”

2023.06.03 20:00 Necrolancer96 Summoning Kobolds At Midnight: A Tale of Suburbia & Sorcery. 85

Chapter LXXXV

Somewhere, West Virginia, USA.

Sheriff Steinberg marched into the council chambers at City Hall. The Mayor and councilmen were arguing and bickering. A common thing as of late. Everyday the town treasury was being depleted as they tried to stop the hemorrhaging as economic collapse of the town loomed ever closer.

Ideas were thrown around as possible solutions. Begging the Federal Government, looking for investors to set-up shop in town, tourism ads. But they were all taken out back and shot the second they were said. The Fed was dealing with its own issues and wasn't going to bailout some Podunk little town in the middle of Appalachia. Trying to convince investors was hard when anyone interested didn't even know where Somewhere was and most believed it was a scam. The town also didn't have anything that could convince a large stream of tourists to flock to the town.

That was what the Sheriff walked in on. The City Council yelling and screaming as the Mayor sat pulling at his graying tufts of hair.
"Mayor Roberts. We need help."

The Mayor didn't even look up and just groaned as he clamped his eyes shut in frustration.
"Tell us something we don't already know."

"Our town is bein' overrun by whatever the hell those things are! The economy is on life-support! At this point this town will be dead and gone by Thanksgiving!" The Sheriff snapped.

"And we are fixing it Sheriff!" The Mayor snapped back.

"Are we?!" The Sheriff yelled. The room went quiet. The Sheriff leaned onto the fine wood council table.

"We are overwhelmed. We need to call the Governor and have him send the National-"

"DONT YOU DARE FINISH THAT SENTENCE!" The Mayor roared.

"WE! NEED! AID!"

"If the National Guard shows up we can kiss our careers in politics goodbye Miles!"

"And that's if the townsfolk don't get their hands on us first." A councilman murmured.

"Or the hillfolk." Another added. An aura of fear filled the chambers as they recalled what happened to the last Mayor.

It was never confirmed it was the hillfolk that brutalized the former Mayor. But superstition runs deep in Appalachia and the current Mayor, and the sitting council, didn't want a possible repeat of history.

"I know that what happened last time was a tragedy."

"Tragedy? TRAGEDY?! IT WAS A GODDAMN MASSACRE!!!" The Mayor roared. His jowls shaking with rage as his face turned a beet red.

"If we call in the National Guard it's a good bet that we'll be either run out of town or dead before they even arrive. And that's IF the Governor sends them. No. We need to just hunker down and weather this storm for the time being." The Mayor continued.

"Weather it how?! It's just me and my two deputies against a horde of creatures that have infested the town! Morty and his private army is doing a better job of keepin' people safe then we are!"

"Then do something about it!"

"HOW?! It's three against who-knows-how-many!"

"What about the volunteers?"

"Six people? Half of them with guns older than the state? You're jokin' right?"

"Well then conscript some more!"

"HOW?! And with what?! Jerry the postman has more guns than our department does!"

"Figure it out Sheriff!"

Sheriff Steinberg threw his hands into the air in frustration.
"People care about 2 things Mr. Mayor. Prosperity, and safety. And right now we can't provide either of them. If we don't do somethin' soon then either Morty will walk right into City Hall with the blessin' of the people. Or we won't have a town to fight over!"

"How many times do I need to tell you to do your job Miles?! You focus on keeping the people safe and let us worry about actually governing!"

"Keep them safe how Gerald?! I! DONT! HAVE! THE! MEN!"

"SO! FIND! SOME!"

With that, the frustrated voice of the Sheriff joined the rest as shouts rang out in the Council Chamber. The Mayor and about half of the council wanting to "wait it out", while the Sheriff and the other half wanted to call for support from the Governor.
"You're just suggesting it because you want the Mayorship for yourself Miles!"

"Are you fuckin' jokin' Gerald?! You think I give a shit about that?! Especially now when we are on the verge of bein' a fuckin' ghost town?!"

"Wouldn't put it past you! You hated to lose even when we were in school!"

"That was 5th grade you fuckin' putz!"

"I won that debate fair and square! Then you worked your Jew magic on the judges!"

"Really you goy motherfucker?! Tell me? How long have you held that in your fuckin' fat folds for?!"

"How dare you?!"

"Fuck you Gerald! Lign in drerd un bakn beygl!"

The Mayor tried, and failed, to jump across the table at the Sheriff. Though it amounted more with him flailing about and tumbling over the table, knocking papers and other stationary around.

The Mayor rolled over the side of the table, the Sheriff easily avoiding the Mayor's outstretched arms as he tried to grab hold of him. Miles looked down at the Mayor with contempt.

"While you and these fat fucks have been in here runnin' around like headless chickens, me and my boys have been tryin' to keep this Goddamn town from fuckin' fallin' apart! So either you call the Governor or I will, you fuckin' shmuck!"

The Sheriff left the Council Chambers as the Mayor tried to stand up. He instead yelled as Miles left.
"Mark my words Miles! If you do, it will be the end of your career! Of all of ours!"

Miles wasn't listening though, he got into his old patrol car and sped back towards the station. His lights were flashing so he wouldn't have to deal with traffic. Not like there was much lately. People mostly walked during the day when attacks from the greyskinned creatures were rarer.

"Probably saving it incase they decide to leave town." Miles grumbled as he sped through the mostly empty streets. He only stopped at a stop sign to wait for some people to cross. As he waited he turned and looked up at a few figures hanging from a streetlight.

The recent casualties of Morty's private army doing what should be his job. The short statured creatures could be mistaken for children, or diseased men. But looking closer revealed that they weren't human. Glassy yellow eyes stared out into nothing as Miles drove off towards the station.

"What the hell is goin' on around here lately?" He asked himself. It seems like something weird happened and now all these strange creatures are calling Somewhere home. Those little people some time ago were weird but nothing too out there. Then came the creatures. Firefights in the hills. Talks of bigfeet!

Something was going on and he didn't like it. The Sheriff pulled up to the station and stormed in with a darkened brow and a string of curses. He was so distracted that he didn't even notice one of his deputies, nor the greeting he received.

The deputy watched the Sheriff slam his office door with a huff. He sat at his desk and listened to the multitude of curses as his co-worker walked in a few minutes later with a worried look on his face.
"Hey Mark. Where's the boss?"

"In his office."

"Doin' what?"

"I'm not sure. He came in cursin' in Yiddish then he went into his office."

"Well did he say anythin'?"

"How should I know? I don't speak Yiddish! All I could get was Gerald, and shmuck. And that was all I needed to hear."

The deputy shuffled a little nervously.
"Think it'll be alright if I go in?"

"Doubt you could make his day any worse... right?"

The look on his face said otherwise.
"What happened?!"

"Just somethin' that the Sheriff should know." The deputy said and inched closer to the door and hesitated. He looked to his co-worker for support before knocking.

The Yiddish curses stopped. Then the door opened to a worn looking Sheriff.
"What is it Davey?"

Deputy Davey shuffled a little and looked a bit unsure if he should speak or not. Sheriff Steinburg rolled his eyes and motioned for him to speak.
"Well, it's just that somethin' happened while you were off speakin' with the Mayor."

Miles' eye twitched slightly at the mention of the Mayor.
"What happened while I was gone?"

"Well, I'm not entirely sure myself."

The Sheriff waited for a moment before Davey continued.
"So. Got a call from one of the ranchers that they saw some bright light to the west."

Miles waited as Davey paused once more.
"And?"

"And so I drive out to take a look. At first I figure it might be aliens or somthin' right?"

"Sure Davey. What was it?"

"Well, so I get there and I'm talkin' with the rancher. Doin' my job and investigatin' right?"

"Right."

"Right! So, I'm talkin' to him and he's tellin' me that he saw a bright flash of light to the west of his ranch."

"You said that already Davey."

"Well I'm just makin' sure I'm tellin' it straight!"

"Just get to the point numbnuts!" Marc yells from his desk.

"I'm gettin' there dipshit!"

"Shut up Marc! Davey? Get with the story already!"

"Right. So. He's tellin' me about the light and where it was. So I do my job and head out there to investigate. As is my job. So I'm drivin' out there, wonderin' if I should come back and get you or to maybe dress a lil nicer. Especially if I'm goin' to be meetin' aliens!" Davey paused, a little excited.

"And?!" Miles snapped the deputy out of his excitement.

"Oh, right. So I get out there and I run into some folks."

The Sheriff and Marc both pause and wait for Davey to continue.
"Well?!"

"Well, it was just some folks. A LOT of folks!"

"Who were they? Or what did they want?" The Sheriff asked.

"I'm not too sure who they are. But they said they were lookin' for Sanctuary, wherever that is."

"So where are they now?"

Davey shuffled a bit.
"Well..."

2023.06.03 18:22 ArthurDrakoni Chain of Being is a science fantasy audio drama set in a space opera future where gods and magic still meddle in the affairs of humanity. This is my review.

As is often the case, there are times when I’m aware of an audio drama for a while. However, sometimes it takes me a bit to get around to them. It helps when I get a nudge in that direction. But it almost always proves to be worth the wait. Such was the case with Chain of Being.
Chain of Being is set far into the future. Humanity has spread to the stars, encountered numerous alien races, and made major advances in science and technology. And yet this world of tomorrow is very much connected to the mythical past. Magic exists alongside science and technology, leviathans and angels attack unsuspecting spaceships, and gods constantly meddle in the affairs of humanity and the other sentient races. The series follows Adam Delta 5. He is the biblical Adam, the very first human ever created. Adam has been wandering the universe for thousands of years, and has grown a bit distant from the rest of humanity. Lately, however, Adam is taking more interest in humanity. A strange force is mutating beings across the universe, and twisting them into strange and unnatural forms. A force that may have a connection to Adam’s past.
The first few episodes of Chain of Being are a bit shorter, and are primarily there to ease the viewer into the setting. The show truly starts around episodes six and seven, Epistasis parts 1 and 2. That’s the point where Adam officially appears. I do understand why series creator Cai Gwilym Pritchard started with these prequel episodes. The setting of Chain of Being is a very unusual one. I can best describe Chain of Being as what would happen if China Miéville decided to make an audio drama. The key word here is weird, as in Weird Fiction.
You do get some hints of familiarity here and there. There’s certainly plenty of biblical allusions, and nods to various mythologies. However, they’re often presented in an unusual context. For example, our protagonist is the biblical Adam, but he’s an immortal, and he has glass horns and completely black eyes. I thought the horns might have been an obscure mythological reference. However, Cai Gwilym Pritchard says that they’re meant to be a reference to the Mark of Cain.
We first encounter Adam aboard an ark ship that is carrying some of the last surviving specimens of birds from East Africa. This is clearly a nod to the story of Noah and the Ark. Interesting that the birds were from East Africa, as that is where humans first evolved. I’m tempted to think that was deliberate. One of the prequel episodes features a character named Tubal Cain. He’s a minor character mentioned in the Book of Genesis, and is claimed to be the world’s first blacksmith.
Adam at one point mentions the different gods that created the different sentient races of the galaxy. Interestingly, it wasn’t Yahweh or Elohim who created humanity. Rather, it was a goddess named Epicurosa. She doesn’t appear to have an analog in any actual mythology, and appears to have been made-up for Chain of Being. Cai Gwilym Pritchard has said he feels a bit embarrassed that most of the aliens are humanoid. However, I think Chain of Being has a pretty brilliant explanation for that. Humans were created in the image of the gods, so it would make sense that other sentient races would be humanoid. It is mentioned that humans aren’t the only race that Epicurosa created.
I should also note that Cai Gwilym Pritchard created Chain of Being at the tender age of seventeen. They wanted to see more science fantasy stories, and decided to be the change they wanted to see in the world. Quite the accomplishment that was indeed.
Have you listened to Chain of Being? If so, what did you think?

2023.06.03 18:10 JulianSkies Blackriver Cases -

[ [FIRST] [NEXT>]
Season 5 “Exotic Pets”
Episode 1 “The Night's Weave”
In any other professional setting, doing what he was currently doing would be considered highly unprofessional. In fact, even in any other precinct what he was doing right now would be very unprofessional. Usually, walking through the front door with your boss clinging to your arm like a swooning teenager would generally be interpreted only one way.
Thankfully, nobody specifically cared about this in this precinct, nor did they come to the obvious conclusion “Thank you, I’ll finish recovering in the break room” she says, with a trembling voice.
“You sure you don’t want me there?” admittedly, playing this role wasn’t really professional either for him but everyone understood the need of it.
“Yes” Keya lets go of Santos’ arm “I’ll just do the thing and drink something cold, then I can start this waking properly” she gently taps her tail on his shoulder “Now go get to work”
He sighs as he walks back to his desk. They had a wonderful two days with nothing happening after the short little session of everything happening, it was unsurprising that she’d start processing things through her nightmares now, leading those being screaming days. “‘least it isn’t the cold bastard yet” he mutters as he sits down.
And so here he planned to spend the rest of his work day getting mighty annoyed at their Regional Firebase. That damned place was in charge of both the fiscal, maitenance and archivistic functions for all the precincts in this area, not only they held the pursestrings of the operation they were also the ones in charge of maintaining equipment, assigning personnel and keeping all the information they needed to work up to date. And they seemed to hate him. Him, specifically, because the problems only started happening when he got here.
Of course he wasn’t just getting annoyed at the Regional for no reason, he was getting annoyed at them for their sheer incompetence, and he hoped it was incompetence, at keeping up data. He’d been hunting down any information about some old unsolved cases, and he’d been getting more luck with random phone calls to other precincts halfway across the planet than an official request to his own Regional.
Sadly, not every plan survives contact with the work day. After some time he feels a presence nearby and turns to look, there is Keya looking mostly like her normal self, except perhaps more tired than normal. She brings her holopad down to put it against his, transferring mission data “Nothing serious, or at least nothing dangerous. But we really should take this call”
He looks down at his device and calls up the mission data he’s just received. Predator sighting near… Orran’s house? Bit too close for comfort, real sightings are usually at the farms, but scarcely any information. Just something small and quadrupedal is the useful information, the rest is just usual ‘predator’ panic speech. “This looks like a ghost call, but sure I’ll go” he stands up and starts heading towards the garage, but stops and turns around “Stay here boss, no need to-”
“Yes there is, don’t worry about me” Keya takes a deep breath “I’m not at full capacity but i’m fine, let’s go” she walks past him.
With a shrug, he follows. As they settle in the car and Keya starts driving, he picks up his holopad to re-read the mission data. Nothing, obviously, has changed but he gives it more attention now. Small quadruped, fast, like a shadow… If there were any other humans here he’d believe it was someone’s pet cat, but without anyone dumb enough to bring an exotic animal to an alien planet in sight that’s unlikely. Sadly, none of the usual trash-diggers quite match either.
But there’s one final detail that’s weird. This… Isn’t the first call. There’s been a lot more calls related to this one, an entire fifty eight different calls all tied to this same incident report. He starts following links to the previous calls and checking them- All of them are the same incident, small quadruped, fast and like a shadow… And they were all marked as minimal priority, and left forgotten and unattended.
With a raised eyebrow he continues to check, seeing the dates of the reports. They were insistent, and have been going on for a while now. They’re not older than his presence here, but aside from them having stopped completely for the previous five days, those calls have been a daily occurrence. And each and every one of them was set to minimum priority by Keya herself, and promptly forgotten. Which indicated there had to be something going on here, because she’d never leave a call forgotten like this, at least not when she woke up screaming.
“Boss-” but before he can say anything, they’ve arrived. A considerably different house than the rest of the residences of the town, Orran had been living here long enough to have completely rebuilt his house in the style of his people, or at least the exterior and a few additions. It was weirdly tall for his size despite being only one floor, the exterior was coated with a material that looked like an earthen-brown daub but the evenness of the striations in the material showed an artistic care in its application beyond the means of manual work. The windows were higher in the walls than in a normal venlil residence and they seemed to have multiple layers, both glass and wood were used in their construction with the final layer being some form of metal.
“Huhn, I wonder if the weather on his homeworld is that wild?” he says, staring at the windows. He’s familiar with that kind of design, it could easily be used to control airflow to various degrees and help regulate temperature. But this entire getup seemed like overkill to him, unless wherever this was used had the breadth of half of Earth’s weather happening in the same area.
“Only about where I lived” Orran’s voice echoes from behind the door, which consists of a mesh door behind a wooden door. The yotul opens them and offers him an ear flick “Nightmare weather that place, used to have a flood gate in the house too. Only good thing the feds to that town was deepening the river to handle the summer floodwaters”
Santos blinks, looks at the agriculturalist, looks back at the car where Keya still is, then back at the yotul “Dang, have I been just staring here for long? I got kind of distracted, haven’t ever actually stopped by to watch your house before”
“Oh, feel free to take it in. Took some effort to get the wattle and daub look just right, not really helping the primitive stereotype much” he says with a joyful wave of his tail “But what can I say, I’m wild nations, feds ain’t the first to call me primitive and i’m still proud of it. Still, to what do I owe the honor?”
He tilts his head to the side slightly, taking in the man’s words for a moment. They made a distressing amount of sense, guess the Yotul would still remember those parts of their own history. But he was here for a job “Yeah, we got a sighting report around here” he picks up his holopad and brings it up “In fact a report in your residence. Do you mind if I look around real quick?”
He notices Orran’s tail stilling “Hrm? I can say I haven’t seen anything, and I live here”
Taking a deep breath Santos stares at the yotul, he knows the flinch isn’t an instinctive reaction “Orran. A few paws ago you didn’t notice the nixa’s claw marks in your kitchen. And this call came in today” then he turns his stare to the side with a sigh “I just want to make sure there’s nothing, alright?”
He can see in his periphery the man going through a wild set of conflicting emotions, only to settle into a defeated expression “Alright… Just, I was uhn… Canning some food. Can you at least spare my dignity somewhat and let me clean up?”
“Sure man, it’s not urgent” he shrugs. As Orran heads back inside he looks back at the car, where Keya is still sitting. Then he looks back at Orran’s door. Something isn’t adding up, and that something is his boss’ behavior.
There is some noise from inside for a while until Orran returns “Alright, got my machinery packed, c’mon in” he mentions before waving him in.
There’s a certain aesthetic clash heading inside, it’s visible that Orran had put in effort into adding in the colors and signs of his people into a venlil residence, but the apparent lack of capacity (or funds) to really change the foundations of it meant a lot of the structure was still that of a normal venlil home.
Still, the walls had been decorated to look like they’re made of wooden planks on the inside with the actual materials only visible near things such as power sockets. The living room itself was decorated in a lightly distressing manner with effectively a circle of couches on slightly raised platforms around a central table, the television has been set up on it with a pivoting base. It looked like someone had repurposed a firepit, or rather the entire setup was designed to evoke the look of a firepit.
There was what looked like, initially, a cloth hanger near the door, but on second look what it really held was a very long string of beads- The way they were strung around it made him imagine Orran wearing those very much like a scarf which also bound around his wrists.
On the wall in the far end was something that looked like a banner, though it was best described as an unframed painting with a tougher canvas. It depicted a distant view of a town in some sandy plateau, the center of the picture was bright and colorful and clearly in the morning but at the sides one could see two long-tailed animals making their way to the center where the town resides, behind them the image was dark and stars could be seen in the sky. The way the nighttime emanated from the creatures it seemed more like they were dragging the curtains of night with their tails. Shaking his head, Santos forces himself to stop ogling Orran’s things and starts looking around.
He wasn’t, sincerely, being serious about this. But not only was this whole song and dance a necessity, but his earlier words WERE true. Just had to check for obvious signs of dangerous things. So a quick cursory glance under the couches, a short moment in the kitchen whose fridge’s scratches still weren’t repaired- Santos stops for a second more staring at the scratch marks on the fridge. He looks at Orran who’s following him, who looks confused. No, this man was not that stupid, he trusted him enough.
Still, that meant he’d have to pay more attention now. Respectfully, without actually touching anything, he continues a visual inspection towards the other side of the house. A short corridor with the doors to the bedroom and bathroom. He passes by the bedroom and stops in front of the closed bathroom door. He sighs and kneels down in front of it.
“What is it?” Orran says behind him
What is it, is that he had heard something “Just… Let me check…” he gently taps the door. And he hears the noise again, light scratching. It stops for a moment, and then he taps the door again, causing them to start for a moment again. He looks back to the frozen yotul, who was apparently actually that stupid “Set ‘em loose if you would?”
Orran doesn’t respond, he just stays there “Look, man. At the very least trust in the fact I’m a human? Not a fan of using my species as a bargaining tool but I think it’s actually relevant here?” Santos stands up again and starts heading to the living room.
He waits patiently for a while, until Orran finally arrives. A small little beast threads through his feet as he walks, not unlike a cat that is doing their best to get kicked, it is indeed a small quadruped with great agility, not only that it has a distinctive striped dark blue coat that is so deep it could be mistaken for black as well as a tail about as long as it’s torso. It’s not a beast Santos recognizes, other than from the painting in the wall, so at least he can’t blame his own kind for this problem. He looks up and sees Orran has another one in his arms, this one looking much more calm and gentle.
Santos rubs his eyes “Really, Orran? You, of all people” he sighs “Come on, not to be racist here but I’d expect a yotul, no, a yotul ecologist to know better.” he waves at the man’s beasts “Did you really bring exotic pets to another planet?! No, not another country, another planet?” he sighs “What even are those?”
“Nightweaver hensa” says a soft voice from behind him, he turns around to see that Keya had finally arrived “An endangered species native to Leirn, called like that after a legend that they were the ones who’d drag the veil of night over the scorching sun” she sounds mostly like herself, but he can feel a flatness creeping up in her delivery.
Santos stares at her for a moment, looks back at Orran with a piercing stare, then slowly lowers his eyes to the hensa he’s carrying “Endangered animals? Are you-” but a light sound draws his attention back to Keya. She simply taps a place in her chest, the motion confuses him for a moment until he looks down at himself. Where she tapped is exactly where the insignia of the exterminator’s guild is in his uniform. He starts exhaling air slowly as he sits down on a couch “Are. You. Fucking. Kidding. Me.”
He looks at Orran protectively holding his pet, looking terrified. The first time he’s seen the man look afraid. He looks down, and notices one of the two hensa had walked up to him. He notices in his periphery Orran flinches when he offers his hand for the feline-like to sniff “Plausible deniability” he says.
When nobody else says anything, he continues “I thought it was weird she made me get inside on my own before her. I am, of course, human. Some things are expected out of us, I’m sure a big fuss is expected out of me over a pet” when the alien feline seems confident enough, it gives his finger a gentle nip and puts its entire head on his hand “So just in case we don’t have any protocol about how to deal with this situation, she can pretend whatever happens is because of me”
He gently caresses the little beast “I thought it was weird you had personally deprioritized fifty eight calls” the tone is not quite accusatory
“He quite clearly had them under control, there was no need to do anything about it” Keya says as if it was the most normal thing
“Why now?”
Keya gently sways her tail “I got tired of it. After the last few paws I don’t think I have the energy to deal with this anymore” it made sense, he knew she had a limit to her emotional energy.
Orran slowly tilts his head to look at Keya “Wait… You’ve known about them?”
She gives him an affirmative ear flick “I even know they’re Nightweavers. They were already an endangered breed before your first contact, for all I know they’re the last two living Nightweavers”
At that, Santos focuses on the one that Orran is holding… Something about it… It’s a she “A breeding pair” this causes the yotul to snap his focus on him “You brought a breeding pair. It would be bad enough if they were just pets, maybe they’d be neutered and the worst damage they’d do would be for however long those fluffball live, but you’re looking at increasing the population”
He sighs “Orran… You know this will cause a disaster, don’t you? Do I need to tell you about the extinction level events that were every goddamn invasive species on Earth? Do I need to tell you the number of species gone extinct because of our cats?” he takes a deep breath “Actually, no, I don’t think I need to. You don’t actually care, do you?” he continues to gently caress the overly-affectionate little feline that at this point had jumped on his lap and burrowed itself under his shirt “Not only you don’t care… Any collateral you cause is probably just rightful vengeance for you is it?”
“It’s not like that!” the yotul shouts “I… I was breeder back home, okay? I wasn’t a farmer, I was a hensa breeder” he thumps his tail on the ground in anger “You weren’t there… You weren’t there to watch what they did to my… When I had a chance to run away and… And save some of them. I just grabbed who I could and just ran.” he holds the pregnant female a little bit tighter “I wasn’t planning on… Anything. I wasn’t planning, I wasn’t thinking… I… I wound up here, eventually…”
Santos brings down his other hand to scratch the little alien kitten. He takes a moment to just take in the little beast, whatever ecological niche it filled had to be infinitely similar to that of cats to be so similar yet so different. The tail movements were so different, a lot more energetic, a lot more in general, made sense since their owners had tails too, they probably could read each other much better. And it seemed to enjoy getting squished for some reason, he wondered why. He had all of those wonders and thoughts while he tried to not think about what he’d have to do.
Those hensa couldn’t stay here. Maybe, a very wild maybe, if they were neutered they could. But those were pretty much for breeding and of a particularly endangered kind as well, so that was out of the picture. Of course, those two space felines would also need to be cared for, they were an endangered species so that was non-negotiable. The UN had some measures for dealing with terran animals in this planet, from relocation to shelters to even a few approved areas they could live in, but they only dealt in terran animals not leirnian animals.
At this point his thoughts are interrupted by Keya’s voice “I don’t care who, anyone that can help is enough” he looks up at her, she has her holopad firmly clenched in her hands and her right eye focused directly on it.
She’s on a call.
---
And here we have it, we meet the two little disasters-to-be while the precinct chief throws their human into the fire as a possible scapegoat for any possible crazy plan they might have to resort to. And in fact, said crazy plan seems to involve a desperate plea over the phone.
Also, I had a bit of fun trying to thinking what Orran's house might be like, and somewhere along the line I got this weird thought: They're certainly not innocent of or about colonialism, so wouldn't the displaced natives of their own world at least feel a tiny bit of vindication watching their own conquerors get conquered in turn? Doesn't make things better but the irony of it all must be sweet.

2023.06.03 18:09 HexagonalRainbow [Thank You] for all the lovely mail

I promised myself to keep up with thank yous, but there's too much going on at the moment and now I'm overwhelmed again. Time to tackle this amazing pile of thoughtful mail, and then I need to rush to the store - where I live stores close in a few hours and won't open again until Monday, and all I have in the fridge is some mozzarella, half a box of mushrooms and a bunch of carrots.
Thank you u/ninajyang x6 - I feel like I should start a special pile for all the mail you're sending me! Thank you for the boba cards and your kind words. The envelope covered in small stamps arrived well, covered in pencil markings. Yes, pencil, I tried and I can just use an eraser to clean the stamps for my collection! The scribbles do look like the person drawing them was a little annoyed, though :D And, thank you for today's mail, I've been complaining so much lately, and I appreciate your kind words. I think the envelope I sent today also contained a lot of depressed complaints, I'm sorry o.o I'll try to be more positive again in the future :D Next week, my favorite coworker is back from holiday, and things will be easier again!
Thank you u/malozing_running for the postcard of your dog and congratulations on the new job! I have a trial work day in two weeks, I'm hopeful that I'll also get my new job :)
Thank you u/chibi_haiku for the happy mail! We also had weather that couldn't decide if it's winter or summer, but now we consistently get temperatures above 77°F, which I don't appreciate, either!
Thank you u/TheFeistyFox for the random card :D How is your cat? Emergency visits are always awful, the worry is unbearable. Wishing you the best!
Thank you u/jaimekj for the Basilika postcard - any plans on getting a better printer? I started printing some postcards of my own, and they look so great with a good printer!
Thank you u/ReasonablePositive for the sweet Mai card - how is your shop going? I wanted to open one, but the amount of fees and bureaucracy made me throw that plan out.
Thank you u/travel4me22 for another one of your amazing hand made cards - it's always such a joy to see one of your envelopes in the mailbox, it's so fun to see what you came up with! Though your birthday platypus card is 100% my favorite, and I doubt anything can top that!
Thank you u/amyt13 for the lovely hand crafted card! I went back to the forest, and came home with a nasty rash on my leg :P I still enjoyed it though, next time I'll wear long pants again! I should do that regardless, where I live there are so many ticks. But feeling the sun and wind on the skin is so great...
Thank you u/Peonynote for the colorful mail! I hope traveling will go well, I also get anxious when I have to go somewhere else. I once cried when the training my boss sent me to unexpectedly was a three day trip instead of the local daily visits I expected, I just hated the thought of having to travel and sleep elsewhere for a stupid seminar about what kind of shoes I should wear at work and what fire safety features my workplace should have.
Thank you u/libertyprogrammer for the lovely card - I noticed you took some time away from carding when I didn't automatically need to open your flair thread when flairing thank yous! Glad to see you back around :)
Thank you u/Ginger_ninjah for the happy mail - it did indeed make me happy to come home to something other than the trashy newspapers that get stuffed into my mailbox all the time! I hope you are feeling a bit better!
Thank you u/DarkMatterPhysicist for the holiday mail! I've never been sailing, I haven't been at the ocean a lot in general. I'd love to be there more often, maybe I'll visit in the summer holidays. Hope you had a great time!
Thank you u/Monetmonkey x2 for thinking of me with the special postal museum stamps! The postcard from there is also so cool, underground networks fascinate me. What a fun idea to use sticker washi! They all stayed on except for one, maybe the mailman took it as payment :D
Thank you u/mypetitmal x2 for the cool mushroom card - did you make the paper? How is your job hunt going? I have a trial work day in two weeks that I really hope goes well, but I'm also scared to say yes and pick wrong again. I'll reply in more detail soon! Also thank you for the Alice in Wonderland card! We have quite different children's books here, but if I pick one favorite that I think you will know, I'll go with Winnie the Pooh - I listened to the tapes until I knew them by heart :)
Thank you for the meetup card to u/todayisfab, u/sebisrude, u/keenevergreen and u/pinkpengin, I hope you had a fun time!
Thank you u/birdiebennett for the cool architectural card! Glad you love your job, I worked in an office for a bit and missed the kids so much I went back to the diapers and screaming :D Working with the parents and colleagues is rough, I don't always like that part, but the kids are amazing. Not many people come into work and a bunch of little voice call out their name before running over for hugs. It's very rewarding! And exhausting, obviously, lol.
Thank you u/melhen16 for the positivity card! I'm currently trying to get myself to be more outside and doing stuff, I'm taking lots of walks in the forest, for example. I'm really enjoying it - as long as there aren't too many other people!
Thank you u/cloudycat4 for the pretty flower postcard! Maybe I need to plan a trip in the summer, I still haven't decided where I will go or if I will go on vacation at all. I really need to come up with a plan soon, before the prices explode.

2023.06.03 17:46 NervousEnergy FYI: Prolific blocks certain ISPs from receiving surveys.

I recently changed from PlusNet to a small full fibre ISP, and noticed my surveys completely dried up: I was easily making £10 a week before the change but I suddenly had zero surveys. This was a pretty big blow as the Prolific money has made the difference between being able to afford my bills some months...
On querying this with Prolific, they told me that Prolific works on a whitelist system where only certain ISPs are marked as trusted and are allowed to use the platform!
Their only suggestion was to use my mobile if I wanted to continue getting surveys.

2023.06.03 17:26 disciplesglobal THE INHABITANTS OF THE EARTH

The inhabitants of the earth represent the men and women who are omitted from the Book of Life because they submit to the Beast. This group is unrelenting in its hostility to the “Lamb” and those who follow him “wherever he goes,” even rejoicing in the violent deaths of his “Two Witnesses.” Unlike the “nations” and the “kings of the earth,” they are beyond redemption, and their names are excluded from the “Book of Life.
The term rendered “inhabitants” translates the Greek verb katoikeô, meaning, “to dwell, inhabit.” In Revelation, it occurs only with negative connotations, and almost exclusively is used for “INHABITANTS of the earth,” a group that is always hostile to Jesus.

IN PERGAMOS

The first use of the term is in the “letter” to the “messenger” of the church in Pergamos. In many interpretations, the phrase “where Satan dwells” is applied either to the seat of the Roman provincial government that was based in Pergamos or to its temple dedicated to the veneration of the emperor. Either view may be correct. However, there is something larger in view. (Revelation 2:12-13).
In Pergamos, “dwell” is applied to Satan and to the church, and the latter certainly did not reside in the governor’s residence or the emperor’s temple. Likewise, ‘Antipas,’ would not have been executed in either location. Most likely, he died outside the city walls. And members of the congregation dwelled in the city. Yet Jesus assured them he was certainly aware that they lived where “Satan dwells.”
Jesus promised the church in Philadelphia that he would keep them “from the hour of trial, which is going to come upon the WHOLE HABITABLE EARTH, to try the INHABITANTS OF THE EARTH.”
The terms “whole habitable earth” and “inhabitants of the earth” are applied to the same situation. Implicit is the wider geographical area that will be affected by this coming “hour of trial.” It will involve populations beyond the confines of Philadelphia and Pergamos– (Revelation 3:10).

IN DANIEL

The term, “inhabitants of the earth,” is derived from a passage in Daniel. After his downfall and restoration to the throne, Nebuchadnezzar declared to the residents of his kingdom:
In Chapter 6 of Revelation, the “Lamb” opened the “fifth seal” and John saw the “souls of them who had been slain for the testimony they held” underneath the “altar.” The image is based on the altar of burnt offerings detailed in the Book of Leviticus. The blood of sacrificial victims was poured out at its base.
And that is the picture behind the vision of the martyred “souls” found at the base of the “altar,” where they plead for vindication against the “inhabitants of the earth” – (Revelation 6:9-11).
Similarly, after the first four trumpets sounded, John saw an “eagle” pronouncing a warning - “Woe, woe, woe, for the INHABITANTS OF THE EARTH, because of the other voices of the trumpet of the three angels who are yet to sound!” – (Revelation 8:13).
The first four trumpets unleashed “plagues” against the economy of the empire – its seaborne commerce, fresh water sources, and the like. The last three harmed the “inhabitants of the earth” themselves. “By these three plagues was the third part of men killed.” Nevertheless, they “repented not of their murders, nor of their sorceries, nor of their fornication, nor of their thefts.”

THE BEAST

When the “Beast from the Abyss” killed the “Two Witnesses,” the “INHABITANTS OF THE EARTH rejoiced over them and made merry… for these two prophets tormented the inhabitants of the earth.” While it was the “Beast from the Abyss” that carried out these violent acts, the “inhabitants of the earth” certainly took pleasure in the deaths of the “Two Witnesses.”
In Chapter 12, after the “son” was “snatched” to the “throne,” Satan was expelled from heaven and “cast down to the earth.” While heaven “rejoiced,” the “great voice in heaven” declared an ominous warning to the “inhabitants of the earth”:
Here, two groups are contrasted, and this is indicated by the two verbs used: “tabernacle” and “inhabit.” “Tabernacle” or “tent” indicates something temporary, such as a “tent” pitched during a journey. “Inhabit” or “dwell” suggests something more permanent. And note the expansion of the expression to the “inhabitants of the earth and THE SEA.”
Unless the passage is a warning to sea creatures, the references are not geographical. Elsewhere in the book, the “sea” is associated with the Abyss, and is a source of great evil that must be pacified.
As for the men who were “tabernacling in heaven,” the expulsion of the Devil meant rejoicing. For the “inhabitants of the earth,” it signified something far more ominous. The identity of the ones who were “tabernacling in heaven” is provided by the context - the “brethren” who “overcame the Dragon by the blood of the Lamb.”
Precisely why the downfall of the “Dragon” meant “woe” to the “inhabitants of the earth” is not stated in the immediate passage. More relevant is the reaction of the “Dragon” to the knowledge that he has a “short time.” He vents his wrath, but NOT against the “inhabitants of the earth,” but instead, against “those who have the testimony of Jesus.”
And the last clause links the latter group to the martyrs who were seen “under the altar” in the “fifth seal,” the ones who were slain on account of “their testimony.”

CONTRASTING GROUPS

The same two groups are found again in Chapter 13, those who “tabernacle in heaven” and the “inhabitants of the earth” - (Revelation 13:4-10).
The rhetorical question concerning the “Beast from the Sea,” - “Who is like him, and who can make war with him” - is reminiscent of Nebuchadnezzar’s declaration - “He does according to his will in the host of heaven, and among the INHABITANTS OF THE EARTH, and none can stay his hand or say to him, What are you doing?”As is now clear, the literary source of the two contrasting groups, those who “tabernacle in heaven [HOST OF HEAVEN]” and the “inhabitants of the earth,” is the same passage in the book of Daniel - (Daniel 4:34-35).
In Chapter 13, the “slander” of the “mouth that was given to the Beast” is directed against “those who tabernacle in heaven.” The reference is NOT spatial. These two terms differentiate between two groups based on their allegiance either to the “Lamb” or to the “Beast.” The followers of the “Lamb” have not taken up permanent residence in the present age, on the earth, or in the sky, therefore, they are described as “tabernacling.”
The term “slander” refers to accusations brought against the saints by the “accuser of the brethren,” presumably, in the earthly courts of the Empire. A parallel is found in the letter to the church at Smyrna where the congregation is “slandered” before local authorities by Jews from the “synagogue of Satan.”
What identifies a person as a member of the “inhabitants of the earth” is not his physical location, but whether his name is excluded from “the Lamb’s Book of Life.” In other words, all those who render homage to the “Beast.”

THE FALSE PROPHET

The second “Beast from the earth,” the “False Prophet,” is seen ascending from the “earth” to deceive the “earth and its inhabitants.” This demonstrates that “earth” means something beyond the physical planet.
Just as the “Sea” and the “Abyss” are sources of evil, so, also, is the “earth.” This explains why the expulsion of Satan from heaven means “woe” to those “inhabiting the earth and the sea.” It will mean disaster to the unrepentant since his unleashing to persecute the church will culminate in the final judgment on all whose names are not “written in the Book of Life.”
This “False Prophet” has two horns “like a lamb,” and performs the same “signs” done previously by the “Two Witnesses.” Thus, he imitates the “Lamb” and his “witnesses.” Similarly, the “first Beast” received the “stroke of death” but lived, a parody of the death and resurrection of Jesus.
This suggests that the deceptions propagated by Satan’s earthly agents mimic and counterfeit the true faith. In response to the “signs” performed by the “False Prophet,” the “inhabitants of the earth” take the “mark of the Beast,” sealing their ominous fate.
In Chapter 14, an angel “flying in mid-heaven” proclaims the everlasting gospel to the “inhabitants of the earth,” AND to “every nation and tribe and tongue and people.” This means the “nations” and the “inhabitants of the earth” are not necessarily identical.
The angel summons his target audience to “fear God and give him glory; for the hour of his judgment is come.” Rather than to the “Beast,” they must “render homage to him that made the heaven and the earth and the Sea and the fountains of waters.” Two more angels follow and pronounce judgment on “Babylon.” This means God has provided the “inhabitants of the earth” ample opportunities to repent - (Revelation 14:6-13).
Babylon, the Great Harlot” is described in detail in Chapter 17. She is the one with whom the “kings of the earth” and the “inhabitants of the earth” commit “fornication.”
As with the “nations,” so the “kings of the earth” are distinguished from the “inhabitants of the earth,” though both groups are corrupted by “Babylon,” she who is drunk with the “blood of the saints, and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus.”
This “Great Harlot” is carried by the “Beast” that has “seven heads and ten horns.” It “was and is not; and is going to ascend from the Abyss,” references to the previous slaying and revivification of the “Beast from the Sea,” and to the ascent of the “Beast from the Abyss” that destroyed the “Two Witnesses.”

SUMMING UP

The book of Revelation pulls together themes from the preceding visions. The constant factor in the several visions is the hostility of the “inhabitants of the earth” to the “Lamb” and his servants, and their choice of the “Beast from the Sea,” his “name,” and his “mark”:
Their consistent refusal to render homage to the “Lamb” explains why their “name is not written in the Book of Life.” At the final judgment, “Death and Hades were cast into the lake of fire, the second death. And if anyone was not found written in the Book of Life, he was cast into the lake of fire” – (Revelation 20:11-15).
Their history of unrelenting hostility to the “Lamb” explains why the “inhabitants of the earth” are nowhere found in the “city of New Jerusalem” in chapters 21 and 22. In Revelation, at times, the “nations” and the “kings of the earth” resist the “Lamb.” Nevertheless, both groups are found at the end of the book in the holy city, therefore, they are not without hope:
But, as a group, the “inhabitants of the earth” are beyond redemption, not because God is powerless to save them, but because they refuse His every offer. No matter how many plagues He sends, they refuse to repent, nor do they respond to His summons to repent. Like the Pharaoh of Egypt, THEY ONLY HARDEN THEIR HEARTS in response. They continue to “fornicate” with “Babylon,” and they celebrate the deaths of God’s servants.
Rather than follow the “Lamb,” the “inhabitants of the earth… render homage to the Beast” and welcome its “mark.” They prefer the counterfeit faith offered by Satan’s earthly agents.
In short, their names are excluded from the “Book of Life” due to their own decisions. God’s condemnation of the unrepentant to the “Lake of Fire” is fully justified.

2023.06.03 16:59 Chazzyphant Fun with apps: Acloset AI suggestions: do they work? Let's investigate

I started a contest with my husband where every day that passes, starting on June 1, is $1--for him no YouTube and for me no clothing shopping. Whoever cracks first has to pay the other person the accumulated dollars when/if they crack. Well I cannot be the first one to crack, especially since he's so convinced it's going to be me!
Therefore it's time to find other ways to enjoy fashion and style without shopping. I downloaded a new closet app, Acloset, after watching a Youtube video (heh) about it. I've downsized my wardrobe in the recent past--about 200 items total (including special occasion wear, winter sweaters, summer linens, etc) so it only took a couple hours to upload and detail all the items.
I suspect the "AI" is a tool that works like the front end of Whering's paper doll function, where it simply loads your items on a carousel and uses tags to combine them, which is fine. It's fun to see what they come up with.
The AI outfit suggestions are amusing and inspirational (to a point), there's multiple categories:
Outfit based on occasion: I really like this. When setting up one's wardrobe, there are tags to specify the occasion (work, party, daily, etc). So the AI presumably pulls from those tags to make suggestions. The options are casual, smart casual, and formal.
How about we add a pop of [color]? This is the most amusing to me as they include white, beige, gray, and black. Is there such as thing as a "pop of beige", Acloset? At any rate, the app choses 1-2 items in that color and makes an outfit.
Just right for the weather: this is based on your location. It's typically rather bland business-casual or smart casual suggestions with either sweaters and boots or dresses and sandals type thing.
[Specific garment] outfit ideas: I like this--it basically wardrobes your one item with multiple suggestions.
Features: this I really like: you can instruct the AI not to pair certain items as mismatched categories. For example, the system kept pairing a bulky, boxy sweatshirt with a slim, narrow, lightweight coated canvas jacket. It also kept pairing a dress with a shirt (?) and a sweater or similar. It's easy to instruct the AI to cut that out. Like this this really irritates me as who is going to wear a full length dress marked formal, a dress shirt, a blazer, and sneakers. I actually love the sneakers + formal dress but come on. That's the type of thing you mark "mismatched categories".
You can save outfits and add to them (similar to other apps) or delete items.
Pros: I really like the multiple approaches--occasion, weather, wardrobing an item. I always enjoy building outfits and seeing how AI combines clothing. It gives me tons of new ideas.
Cons: The outfits feel random--much more random than OpenWardrobe.
The app does not consider weight or texture of them item or comfort--for example, it paired a snug, sheer skirt with over the knee boots (one of the single most uncomfortable outfits I've ever tried on) because the skirt is cream and black and the boots are black (or that's my guess at least). Urg.
The app seems very focused on a few items to the exclusion of others. For example, I have a single sweatshirt loaded, a "Grailed"-style item I found in a vintage store. It's a paint splattered Sherman Williams sweatshirt that I cut the cuffs off of and hardly ever wear as it's not conventionally flattering, but it's a hella cool item. For whatever reason, Acloset has made dozens of suggestions with this damn thing, to the point I'm tempted to tell the app to exclude it from suggestions. My guess is that I didn't upload many casual tops and therefore whenever the outfit calls for a casual top, that gets picked. But come ON.
The app makes outfits without shoes. It includes bags on the reg but not shoes. I mean...
Shoes are often the most difficult part of an outfit to me, so much so that I've built outfits "shoes up" rather than adding shoes last. So a full outfit with shoes is a valuable function of the app. So much so that I'm tempted to remove or forbid bags and see if the app will put in shoes instead.
Okay the best part: outfit examples:
Flatlay 01: Banana Republic silk camisole, Lilith blazer, FP pants, Donna Karan Collection bag, no shoes suggested
Result in person okay I don't hate it. The top handle bag + camisole and blazer feels a little mumsy to me, despite the funkiness of the blazer and the artsy details on the bag. These FP pants I had the hem lowered and they are still really hard to pair shoes other than sandals with. A B+ outfit.
Flatlay: the sweatshirt, By Marlene Birger skirt, Tory Burch boots an adorable idea, SUPER uncomfortable outfit. It can be styled two ways
Style option 01
Style option 02, which I prefer you can tell by the look on my face I find this a little ridiculous.
Would not wear in real life, so a fail. I will say I did put the boots on over bare legs/feet which was a very unpleasant experience, and one I wouldn't do in real life. So the idea of a shorter skirt, OTK boots and a boxy, oversized top is not misplaced. Just not for a warm, humid late spring day after a full day of work.
Flatlay 03 Universal Standard dress, Prada mules, Target clutch. Wow do I love this. The app stumbled on exactly what works about all three of these items--the sleek yet artistic / interesting minimalism of them all. I would love to find an occasion to which to wear this.
In person I just love this. I look very "over it" in the pictures but that's just my face, heh. Totally chic and interesting outfit, A+.
Flatlay 04 Madewell shoes, Target clutch, That Freaking Sweatshirt, Wit and Wisdom jeans
It's cute I mean, it's not reinventing any wheels and it's not something I wouldn't come up with on my own, but I do love the idea of a clutch with casual clothing. A- because LET IT GO on the sweatshirt, app.
Flatlay 05 Anine Bing tee, Lilith blazer, Vince pants, Donna Karan bag, no shoes suggested
It's...fine it's a business casual inoffensive outfit. I paired it with loafers because that seemed like the best bet. So the thing is...that tee shirt is not a layering piece. It's oversized and draped and it doesn't fit under the snug arms of the coated canvas jacket. B+
Unrelated to the app, I'm also questioning the Donna Karan bag, as it seems really mumsy and staid and 'St. John Knits' with these outfits? Maybe it's the pin + paracord, which I added. Maybe not? Anyhoo, it's in purgatory because it's not quite working for me and I have MANY bags.
I'm also iffy on the Vince pants, which makes me REAL sad. They're lightweight and long enough for me, which never happens. But they wrinkle so severely at the slightest touch, which makes them look cheap and sloppy. They were an outlet find so they weren't that pricey but do I need them? I dunno. I'm wary of getting rid of items during a time I can't replace them, so maybe "purgatory" while I figure it out.
Alright, so there you have it, Acloset review! Do you use Acloset or other apps? Share to us!

In this guide, you’ll learn everything you need to know about the Battle of Sallasil, including its historical context, key events, and lasting significance.

What Was the Battle of Sallasil?
The Battle of Sallasil (Arabic: معركة ذات السلاسل Dhat al-Salasil), also known as the Battle of Chains, was the first major battle fought between the Rashidun Caliphate and the Sassanian Empire. The battle took place in April 633 CE near Kazima, a town in modern-day Kuwait that was close to the border of Dast Meisan, a frontier district in Mesopotamia. The battle lasted for a few hours until the Sassanian army was routed and dispersed.

Why Did the Battle of Sallasil Happen?
The Battle of Sallasil happened because Caliph Abu Bakr wanted to expand the domains of Islam beyond the Arabian Peninsula. He saw the Sassanian Empire, a powerful and wealthy rival in the region, as a threat and an opportunity. He wanted to spread the message of Islam to other lands and peoples, as well as to secure the borders of Arabia from external attacks.

Who Were the Leaders of the Battle of Sallasil?
The leaders of the Battle of Sallasil were Khalid ibn al-Walid and Rostam Farrokhzad. Khalid ibn al-Walid was a brilliant military strategist who had earned the title “The Sword of Allah” for his notable victories in previous battles. He commanded an army of about 18,000 men, consisting mostly of light cavalry and archers. He also had some allies from the local Arab tribes who had embraced Islam or entered into treaties with him. Rostam Farrokhzad was a skilled general who led an army of about 40,000 men, according to primary sources, or 15,000 to 20,000 men, according to modern estimates. His army consisted of heavy cavalry, infantry, elephants, and armored wagons.

How Did the Battle of Sallasil Unfold?
The Battle of Sallasil unfolded in three key stages:

Khalid’s Flanking Maneuver: Khalid ibn al-Walid recognized the challenge posed by the Sassanian defensive line and devised a brilliant plan. He ordered his troops to launch a surprise flanking maneuver, attacking the Sassanian army from the rear. This strategic move caught the Sassanian forces off-guard and disrupted their defensive formation. This also gave Khalid an advantage in terms of terrain and mobility over his enemy.

Breaking the Chains: Despite the initial shock, the Sassanian army fought fiercely to maintain their defensive position. However, the Muslim forces, driven by their conviction and determination, gradually broke through the Chains of Sallasil, breaching the Sassanian defenses and creating chaos among their ranks. The chains also made them vulnerable to Khalid’s cavalry charges, which cut through their ranks like a scythe. The breaking of the chains symbolized the breaking of Sassanian power and resistance.

Decisive Victory: The relentless assault by the Muslim forces led to the collapse of the Sassanian army. Rostam Farrokhzad, the Sassanian general, was killed during the battle, dealing a severe blow to Sassanian morale and leadership. The Battle of Sallasil resulted in a resounding victory for the Rashidun Caliphate, further paving the way for the Muslim conquest of Persia. The Muslims captured a large amount of booty and prisoners from the battlefield.

What Was the Impact of the Battle of Sallasil?
The impact of the Battle of Sallasil was immense and far-reaching. It marked a significant milestone in the expansion of the Rashidun Caliphate’s domains and the eventual collapse of the Sassanian Empire. The triumph at Sallasil showcased the military genius of Khalid ibn al-Walid and solidified his reputation as one of history’s great military commanders. His exploits and victories inspired later Muslim leaders and warriors, such as Saladin and Tariq ibn Ziyad, who followed his example and legacy.

Moreover, the Battle of Sallasil contributed to the spread of Islam in the region, shaping the political and religious landscape for centuries to come. It played a crucial role in establishing Muslim rule in Persia and the subsequent cultural and societal transformations that followed.
