MATELED PCE & DT

2023.06.08 00:12 stacijo531 MATELED PCE & DT

Hey all, I am due to start my final term on July 1st. Since it's summer break here, there isn't an opportunity to start PCE, so my mentor has recommended a term break from July 1st through July 31st. School starts back up August 15th, and I already know where I will do PCE and with what teacher here (the county is ridiculously short on teachers, I've been a sub for 5 years starting the 23-24 school year, and the board office as well as administration in the 3 schools I cover have been waiting impatiently for me to finish this program) and I was wondering if anyone could give me an estimate of how long it will take the CFEF on their end to get things ready so that I can start and finish PCE quickly and move on to DT. Also, after finishing PCE, how long does it generally take for the CFEF to get everything for DT squared away so I can get it started and completed? I'm in WV if that makes a difference for anything. I've already been offered my choice of jobs in the county, but didn't accept any yet because I told the board I have to finish this course. I'm curious about the timelines because #1 as a sub that works full time, I'm going to lose out on about $13,000 worth of pay to get both PCE and DT completed and that's IF they move quickly on their end and #2 I should have graduated this coming December, but now my term break will cause that to be pushed back to January, and if they take too long to get things squared away, I'm afraid I'll have to stay for yet another term and not graduate until July of 2024 instead. TIA for your help!!

2023.06.08 00:11 HerzogVonMartian To bee or not to bee

The more I grow veggies and herbs the more I notice nature. The amount of things people miss just right outside their door, it's crazy. I have had butterflies use my beets and peas to lay eggs on, I have pigeons eat my seedlings. I attracted a bunch of bees and bumblebees growing Thyme and wildflowers, which then attracted the Blackbirds with it's great song and the Tits, Finches, Sparrows and Robins and Pigeons and what not, that munch on the bees and wasps and all the while this entire Attenborough-eske mini documentary played out before me I hear people go by on their bicycles, mopeds, motorcycles, scooters, cars and most of them don't even notice any of it. I am not saying I am special, but you could sit in your garden on your phone or you could have a few flowers and within an hour you will see tons of animals come and go.
It's pretty cool.
oh and the swallows fly over during summer a lot catching bugs I think and at night the bats come out. I also had a couple of tits (jk they were sparrows) in my bushes build a nest, 3 birds of which 1 didn't make it and I made a video of a Wasp murdering a Bumblebee.
There is a lot going on mere feet away from your bedroom window.

2023.06.08 00:07 nivinaa Questions and Doubts

So the timelines are confusing. I guess there was a y2k party where luke went missing. We have seen Megan coding in summer of 2000, what was she doing?
At the ending of Episode 2 did Isabella told the truth about the tape to Debbie?
And I thought ride or die is only btw Megan and Isabella's?
And Isabella is really hiding about her past life ?

2023.06.08 00:03 ItalianofromItaly Rewatching Gargoyles as an adult - The Thrill of the Hunt

The episode on Gargwiki.
The episode on Ask Greg.
How long has it been: it's been four weeks since the previous episode.
So, Xanatos' arrest: as a kid, I loved the fact that his defeat at the end of Awakening meant something and he didn't just somehow get loose in-between episodes - but as an adult, I kinda have to ask: how the hell did it happen? At the beginning of this episode, Elisa says "I have to tell you, Mr. Burnett, I'm still surprised at being asked back here, seeing as how I've busted your boss"; shortly afterwards, she clarifies that Xanatos "was only convicted of receving stolen property". Ok, so:
  1. How did she "bust" him, exactly? Where did she find the proofs? She didn't have a warrant for the Castle or anything in the previous episode, so how did she manage?
  2. Even assuming there were some legally usable proofs somewhere, how did the second richest guy in the Disney Canon (first being Scrooge McDuck, of course) end up in prison so quickly and easily? When was the last time you saw a rich guy do the same in real life?
Elisa tries for the first time to convince Goliath to leave the Castle; Weisman has some... interesting thoughts about that: "Goliath is stubborn, even dense and condescending toward Elisa, when she tries to convince him to leave the castle. But I think from his POV, his responses were perfectly natural. Xanatos was banished. The castle was theirs. The concept of ownership was sketchy for the Gargoyles at best, but if they did understand it, they understood it in the "Possession = Ownership" sense. The notion that Xanatos could still "own" the castle after an embarrassing defeat was completely ALIEN to Goliath."
...what?
So the Gargoyles don't understand the concept of "theft"? Between this and the "no-names" thing, no wonder their race is borderline extinct, since they are apparently dumb as f**k; it's either that, or Weisman honestly thinks that's how ownership worked in the tenth century, which, no.
But frankly, that's missing the real point, which is: WHO THE F**K CARES ABOUT THE TRUE OWNER OF THE CASTLE? The Vikings owned absolutely nothing of it, and that didn't stop them from reducing the Gargoyles to rubble; the real problem isn't that some piece of paper somewhere states that Xanatos is the legal owner of Wyvern, the problem is that there's nothing stopping him from killing the Gargs and Goliath isn't willing to face up to that fact yet. Now, if you want to tell me that Goliath is kidding himself about the Clan's possibilities to stay in the Castle (that's probably the best way to interpret his "You worry too much, Elisa. Xanatos was defeated. We are safe here." line) that's fine - but don't bring legal ownership into it, because it has nothing to do with it.
The Pack gets introduced, first as a tv show and then in real life: they were apparently meant to be a bit of a Power Rangers parody ("We were consciously trying to do a professional wrestling meets (the hated) Power Rangers thing"); as a kid who watched both Gargoyles and Power Rangers (don't look at me like that), the thought never crossed my mind. Now that I'm an adult... I still don't see it in any meaningful way. Oh well.
It's a bit weird, seeing the Pack in their first appearance:
  1. They're all humans here; no mutates, no cybernetic abominations, no Xanatos-faced robots - just five human mercenaries using their skills and an arsenal of unconventional weapons.
  2. It's the original formation, which will stop existing after this episode.
  3. Fox is a completely different character here compared to her later appearances; to make it work, you basically have to tell yourself that she's acting throughout the entire episode (at one point she says "We never had it this good" - yeah, because you're totally not the daughter of a multi-billionaire, right Janine?). I'm also pretty sure this is the one and only time she ever wears her Pack uniform.
Lexington deciding to approach the Pack makes sense, between the fact that he's starstruck - without having any prior experience of it, what with the lack of tv sets in medieval Scotland - and the fact that he considers the Pack to be "warriors, just like us!"; plus, as he later says to Goliath, there's no reason why only he can have an Elisa, and moreover "Look, it's not like I revealed all our secrets; I'm not stupid". I just wish the scene went on a bit longer - as it is, we go more or less immediately from "Hi, I'm Lexington!" to "But of course I can bring Goliath to you! It's no problem at all!"
Speaking of which: I love those good old-fashioned death traps at PackMedia Studios, and I love the way the fight develops; here, I pretty much 100% agree with Weisman: "Action-wise this thing is taut. The Pack just keeps coming and coming. The Gargs never have a chance to catch their breath. And, then, suddenly, they do. And the tables turn fiercely. And the Point of View, as well. We are ALWAYS on the side of the hunted. When it's Goliath and Lex, we get very little of the Pack. Just snatches of them attacking. The gargs struggling to stay alive. But up on that roof, we abruptly switch POV. Suddenly, we're following the Pack. Even, dare I say, sympathising with them. Not that we want them to win. But we begin to identify with them as they battle these strange creatures. I love that."
LEX: "I'm never trusting anyone again!"
GOLIATH'S MIND: "Wow. And I thought I was being edgy four episodes ago, when I said I would never trust humans again."
Goliath and Lex hide themselves on a roof which just happens to be full of gargoyle statues - and it's not like they aim for it or anything, they just climb a random building and it's there! A bit too fortuitous, although the sequence itself is great (Hyena just disappers into nothingness at one point, and we never see her again for the rest of the episode - a veritable WTF and awesome choice).
Fox taking a hostage works fine with the way she's presented in this episode, but not with her later characterization - it's the one time "she's acting a bit" doesn't cut it; Weisman's explanation for it doesn't work for me either: "Likewise, look at Fox's actions at the end of the episode. Can you imagine Fox in any later episode crudely taking a hostage? It seems like she checked her brain at the door. But it works for me because at that time, she (and we) didn't truly know what an angry gargoyle was capable of. Maybe Goliath would dismember her."
It doesn't work for me because:
  1. If Fox fears Goliath to be a savage beast ready to dismember her, why would she think taking a (human) hostage would stop him?
  2. Wouldn't Xanatos have told Fox about Goliath sparing him at the end of Awakening?
The fight ends (with a bit of an anti-climax, to be honest) and we're back at the Castle. Goliath quotes Lexington's previous speech about the fact that they need to "search for allies, kindred spirits... and sometimes we must take chances like we did tonight", which is nice - but doesn't quite work for me because we never actually saw the Gargs do those things in later episodes: yes, they collected a few more human friends along the way, but they never actually went searching for them, unless I'm forgetting something.
We end things with the first Xanatos Tag:
OWEN: "Everything was done as you stipulated, sir. The cable tv was adjusted so that the only program the Gargoyles could see was the Pack's; the Pack received the mysterious envelope of photographs and reacted just as you predicted. A pity nothing else happened according to plan."
XANATOS: "Oh, I wouldn't say that, Owen. Though they didn't know it was me, I created the Pack to be far more than just a tv show; I had to see how good they were. And having underestimated Goliath once before, I needed to know what he was capable of as well. All in all, I'd say the test was most... informative."
Wow. That sucks. There will be some great Xanatos Tags in the future, but the first one's horrible:
  1. You needed to see what Goliath was capable of? After you saw him smash your Steel Clan robots and emerge unscathed from an air fortress full of armed guards? How are five human mercenaries a bigger challenge than that?
  2. Using the Gargoyles to test the Pack sounds very unfair to the latter - you don't "test" people by sending them against the biggest threat around.
  3. The scene becomes even worse in hindsight, once you learn that, because of David's little test, his One True Love ended up in prison; truly, a victory for the ages.
Final verdict: ok. Not one of the best, but ok.
RANKINGS:
  1. Awakening Part Four
  2. Awakening Part One
  3. Awakening Part Two
  4. Awakening Part Five
  5. The Thrill of the Hunt
  6. Awakening Part Three

My Top 10 Iconic Le Mans Legends
This weekend, the 24 Hours of Le Mans race will celebrate its 100th anniversary, and with 62 cars from different classes gathering around in this centennial milestone as well as special guest stars, rest assured that the 100th running of the 24 Hours of Le Mans is going to be historical indeed.
https://preview.redd.it/pefahi055o4b1.png?width=320&format=png&auto=webp&s=96bc8f6e4d0f78793f315a8d4b2f096639691d58
As the whole world is bracing for the centennial running of the legendary endurance race that pushes carmakers over the limit in the name of speed and survival, it's time for me to jot down my top ten iconic Le Mans legends.
10) GR010 - Following the success of their LMP1-class TS050, which propelled Toyota Gazoo Racing to three straight overall titles at Le Mans, Toyota created this competitor to the new Hypercar class, which replaced the LMP1 class after the 2020 season. Complying with Hypercar regulations, the GR010 is powered by a 3.5L V6 twin-turbo engine mated to an electric motor that powers the front wheels, making it a 4WD machine where the petrol engine powers the rear wheels while the electric motor takes care of the front, a drastic change compared to its LMP1 predecessor. Toyota defended its Le Mans success in the new Hypercar class with the #7 Toyota Gazoo Racing car emerging as the winner of the 24 Hours of Le Mans for two years, making it its fifth win in a row.
9) Toyota TS050 - In the 2018 24 Hours of Le Mans, being the only manufacturer-backed LMP1 racer competing in its class, the #8 Toyota Gazoo Racing TS050, piloted by Formula 1 driver Fernando Alonso, Formula E driver Sebastien Buemi, and Kazuki Nakajima, made a historic victory at Le Mans, marking the second time a Japanese carmaker won Le Mans since the legendary Mazda 787B and the first time a Japanese driver became part of the Le Mans-winning team. In 2019 and 2020, with the latter being the final year for the LMP1 era, Toyota emerged victorious in Le Mans.
8) Jaguar XJR-9 - Built in collaboration between Jaguar and Tom Walkinshaw Racing, Jaguar's Group C competitor is powered by two V12 engines; a 7.0L for the WSPC and a 6.0L for IMSA GTP class. Both produce 760PS of power and 828Nm of torque, while mated to a 5-speed March/TWR manual gearbox, making the XJR-9 capable of hitting a 245mph top speed. A Silk Cut-sponsored Jaguar XJR-9 won the 1988 24 Hours of Leman with Jan Lammers, Johnny Dumfries, and Andy Wallace behind the wheel.
7) Peugeot 905 - The V10-powered Peugeot 905 cemented the French carmaker to the list of Le Mans winners when it won the legendary endurance race twice in 1992 and 1993.
6) Audi R18 TDi - The Audi R18 TDi is known as the only diesel-powered racing machine that conquered Le Mans three times from 2012 to 2014. Not only that, it has dominated two WEC championship titles from 2012 to 2013. Such achievement proves that diesel is king until dieselgate came most carmakers are ditching diesel-powered engines for good.
5) 919 Hybrid - In 2014, Porsche returned to LMP1 endurance racing with their 919 Hybrid and although it didn't fare well in its first run, which led to its 3rd place finish at the constructor's championship at the 2014 WEC season, it came back with a much fighting chance and because of such will power, it managed to win not just Le Mans but also three WEC seasons on the trot from 2015 to 2017. Porsche has left the LMP1 racing program after their three-win streak with the 919, only to make a comeback in the Hypercar class with the 963 racing machine.
4) Sauber-Mercedes C9 - As part of the Sauber-Mercedes partnership, this Group C prototype was introduced in 1987 and its first success can be traced back to the 1989 24 Hours of Le Mans, where the #63 C9 driven by Jochen Mass, Manual Reuter, and Stanley Dickens, achieved a win. During qualifying for Le Mans, the C9, with its Mercedes-Benz M119 HL 90º 5.0L Turbo V8 engine with two KKK turbos, achieved a top speed of 248.0 mph (400 km/h) at the Mulsanne Straight of Le Mans.
3) 917K - The Porsche 917K is known as the short-tail version of the legendary 917, a sports prototype race car, and it gave Porsche their first overall wins at Le Mans for two straight years since 1970. Thanks to such success, it even gained a starring role in the Le Mans movie starring Steve McQueen.
2) 787B - Built as an improved version of the 787, it features the same R26B 4-rotor Wankel engine as its predecessor which produces up to 690HP of power. Aside from that, it features carbon-fiber bodywork which resulted in a light, rigid body structure and other improvements. In the 1991 24 Hours of Le Mans endurance race, Mazda sent two 787B machines with the race-winning #55 car driven by Bertrand Gachot, Johnny Herbert, and Volker Weider. The 787B not only became the first Japanese-manufactured race car to win Le Mans, but it's also the first-and-only rotary-powered race car to win the said endurance race.
1) GT40 Mk. II - Ford's trial-and-error process of creating a racing machine that can crush Ferrari in Le Mans is nothing more of an act of revenge from the Blue Oval following Ferrari's rejection to become part of the Ford empire. Armed with the 7.0L V8 engine producing 485HP of power and mated to a 4-speed gearbox, the GT40 Mk.II from Ford delivered a stunning podium sweep at the 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans race, more than enough to crush Ferrari into it. Such achievement has been profiled in the biopic movie Ford vs. Ferrari.
In this centennial running of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, will it be a milestone for Toyota Gazoo as it's seeking a three-peat in the Hypercar class? Will the return of Ferrari in Le Mans crush Toyota's dreams for a three-peat? Find out as this legendary endurance race unfolds this Saturday, June 10th. Don't miss it!

2023.06.07 23:56 Jeffreyjellyfish33 Need help on getting out of this situation.

Hey guys I am in a really bad predicament right now. Over the past month, I had broken up with my girlfriend of 7 months. I had tried to make things right but ended up making things worse. She is now wanting to get a restraining order on me, and I have court scheduled at the end of this summer. After all, Chris Rock stated in order to get a woman to do something you want you say the opposite. The only place that doesn't work of course is the bedroom. I wrote her text messages but she kept blocking my numbers after the new numbers I had gotten to try to talk to her. We broke up over something that wasn't even my fault. I had an idea. My friend is good friends with the boyfriend of her roommate. He went into the apartment to hang out with the roommate's boyfriend. When the boyfriend wasn't looking he was going to cause a plumbing issue in the kitchen. My friend ended up doing just that. I dressed up as a plumber from the local plumbing department that serves the apartment. I had a uniform and boots, from Halloween. I took time into creating my card and sewing the logo on my uniform. Since it was an emergency I called in impersonating the plumbing company. I told her that I would be there as soon as possible. When I arrived, I let myself through the door and revealed myself to her after I took my sunglasses off. She told me to get out of her apartment right now or she's calling the police. The roommate quickly ran to go get her cell phone to call the feds. I tried to hug her and told her to please take me back. She pushed me away and screamed I need to leave. I refused and lunged at her. I missed and tumbled to the ground. She ran down the hall and I chased her. As I was gaining up on her she made it to what I assumed is her room and she hid in there. I started violently banging on the door screaming at her to let me in. My anxiety is completely through the roof at this point. Her roommate came as well as her boyfriend grabbing me and telling me to get the hell out but I couldn't listen. I did one last strike to the door and broke it open. The boyfriend of her roommate used a ton of force to get me out. The boyfriend started punching me and restraining me. I look up and saw my ex-girlfriend crying profusely. I broke free and ran out of the apartment door. I got a text from her the next day saying that she will be filing a restraining order and taking this to court. My therapist is really worried about me, saying I need to get help and also a lawyer. I need advice on moving forward. I know what I did was wrong and was wondering will I be going to jail or just having to pay for fines and repairs in the apartment. let me know what needs to be done.

2023.06.07 23:56 lolasshelter I need advice: student about to study abroad in Japan

Hi! In about a year I will be enrolling on an Erasmus program to finish university in Japan. It has always been a dream destination of mine, as well as a country that, if I loved visiting, would be an ideal for me to live in. I know the language and I love the food there, I think I could get accustomed to the people there quite easily as well given that I follow a very polite attitude.
Regarding those things, I'm not worried! However, I'm someone who misses home very easily. And my country is 16 hours away from Japan.
I have the opportunity to go there for either 1 semester or 2 semesters. The answer seemed obvious for me at first, 2 semesters would be amazing! It still sounds amazing to me, but the more rational part of myself thinks "would I end up missing hoke so much that it ruined my experience?". That single thought has made me question if spending one semester there would be better, it would be around 4 months, but I'm also afraid of ending up regretting it and thinking "wow, I would have loved to stay here for longer!".
Does anyone have advice regarding this? And does anyone have advice in general for someone who will be studying in Japan, I will be one hour away from the heart of Tokyo for context!
(There's also the question of making friends, including Japanese ones)
Thank you!

2023.06.07 23:51 Thrownaway444410 Seeking advice upon my situation

Alright, I’ve recently graduated! Therefore; I haven’t seen the classmate, I’m attracted towards. As background information: We’ve had simple interactions in the past. I’ve reached out to her via social media and we began talking. Our conservation, consisted of our plans after the summer. I’ve learned we have common majors, we’ll like to pursue. Yet possibly unfortunate news is that she’s planning to move out of our home town to pursue her education. (Not once in our conversations, have I detected any “hints” nor clues.) (Honestly worried, I’ve missed some clues, and I’ve heard multiple men do) Now I find myself in a situation where, I’ll have to decide to confess my feelings or withhold them. Anyways, my question upon this situation is: Should I pursue or confess my feeling for her, even though she’ll be gone after summer?
-Thank y’all in advance.

2023.06.07 23:46 Legitimate_Ideal5485 This is my First Reddit Post Ever!

Hello-I am a 43 year old female. I had the first sign of HS at 8 years old, but not diagnosed until I was 21. In the student health clinic at my university of all places.
When I was first diagnosed, I was a severe case, under my arms, groin, and under my breasts. I tried everything recommended back then, and still had to have grafts under my arms and a large breast reduction. My groin was still a mess. I was afraid of surgery in that area, and never pursued it. To say that area is battered would be an understatement.
And then last summer, I started with flairs on my waist line on my right side. They’re quite painful. I was in a high level of stress for about 8 months (I lost my job, and had to move states to gain employment in my field). I was broke, depressed, and stressed about everything. When I moved to where I live now, I immediately established with a dermatologist. We tried some things. I we tried remicade, and now cosentyx. During it all, I was in some type flare. Nothing was working. The dermatologist would occasionally write me a prescription for pain medication. As a last resort, he said removing the diseased tissue is the only way to solve this. So, I agreed.
I had a large portion of my waistline remover, and the 10 inch incision about 1/2 inch below where my pants sit. Surgery was on 2/24/23. It was an out patient procedure. She basically made a flap and then sewed my skin together. Unfortunately, she did not remove ALL of the diseased tissue. And almost immediately the HS tunneled directly to the incision. It caused me to miss an additional week do work.
Since that time, I’ve had to wear a bandage in that area. I’ve been on antibiotics for months. It’s puffy and hard one day, but not the next. The only thing that is constant is the pain. I saw the surgeon every week for over a month. I had appointments with my PCP. I was having severe pain back in April and I went to ER (It was a Sunday afternoon). They did an ultrasound, and did not see any cyst or abscess underneath that area. It’s literally just the tunneling. Anyway, the dr gave me a pain pill in the ER and then sent me home with 10 more. Ok. I stretched them as long as I could. I was finally able to get in with my PCP the week before Memorial Day. During the visit, I told her that I’m in a debilitated state. I have to work from home about 90% of the time. My house is a mess. I haven’t been cooking. I’m pretty depressed. The dr and I (she is a family med resident) discussed my history, what has transpired since my surgery, my trip to the ER. We agreed that she would start me on Aleve and gave me 8 ultram for the severe days. To be clear, that was 8 for 14 days. Meanwhile, I was messaging her via the EMR. I told her I was still having pretty intense pain. I didn’t hear back for a couple of days. And then June 3 happened…
I woke up on Friday and my side was basically burning. It was hurting so badly. I called and tried to get in with my PCP, or another of her associates, but nothing was available. Well, I made the mistake of going to the ER. It was not busy. When I checked in my BP was 158/100. I was struggling. The ER Dr listened to me and stated that I needed a CT to make sure there isn’t anything that the US can’t see. I also had another US. And a bunch of blood work. They also gave me a shot of morphine. The surgical resident came down to see me. And then 2 hours later I was discharged. I got upset. I told them that I refused to leave until someone help me. Not give me drugs, but help me. Figure something out. I then asked for a patient advocate, and was told I had to call them. I was upset at that point. I regrettably yelled at the nurses, and for that I actually feel bad. The dr told me that my PCP has to help me. But she isn’t either. My pain was completely dismissed. I believe they called security because I saw one walking back that way. So? I left. I got in my car and just balled. I was mortified. Embarrassed. In pain. And no one cared to help even though I asked.
Forward to that evening. My PCP responded to my message. She wants to start me on Lyrica. I said yes, can I also have some more ultram for the acute pain. Today, I received a message from her stating that I need to speak to a behavioral pain specialist and that I may have complex region pain syndrome. I looked it up. It seems to be phantom pain. She also suggested that start on a course of narcan. To be clear, I signed a pain contract when she wrote me the ultram prescription. I do not take drugs for the sake of taking drugs. I’m in real pain, it isn’t fake or in my head, it’s the HS. I’m at my wits end. What do I do? I’ve been labeled a drug seeker for advocating for myself.

2023.06.07 23:42 gsuberland Played a bunch of Astro Colony for the first time yesterday!

I bought this game yesterday after seeing Let's Game It Out playing around with it. I'm a big fan of factory games (I've got 1500 hours in Factorio and another 150 hours in Dyson Sphere Program) so when I saw that Astro Colony was kinda like "Satisfactory meets Raft meets Space Engineers", I was super excited. Bought it yesterday, played for far too long, next thing I knew it was 6am.
First up: this game looks great and runs smooth like butter. I cranked everything to ultra at 4K with a 2080Ti, it ran perfectly without a hitch. I'm on a workstation optimised for threaded workloads (2x 28c/56t CPUs @ 2.2GHz base) so my CPU is usually a bottleneck for games due to them typically wanting high single-core clocks, but you've either nailed support for lower clocks on single threaded loads or you're making very good use of thread pools for parallelism. Excellent work either way.
I'm also really glad to see a "mods" button in the menu already. Great move. A healthy modding community is what keeps factory games like this alive and interesting for years to come - I reckon there's more content in Factorio's overhaul mods (248k, Pyanodons, Krastorio, Space Exploration, etc.) alone than I think I could complete in a lifetime.
I think you also nailed the balance between exploration and factory building. The exploration just sorta happens naturally as you float through space or look for new resources, and doesn't take focus away from building stuff and progressing with technology. The abundance and distance of materials is also nicely balanced; this is something I personally didn't enjoy as much in Satisfactory and I think you did a better job of it.
Based on what I played, here's some feedback on stuff that I think could be improved, in no particular order:
The manual asteroid catchers are my least favourite part of the gameplay loop. They aren't fun enough to justify the amount of time you have to spend using them. I'd like to see them redesigned a bit to offer a wider panning range; perhaps even full 360° rotation. Restricting the catching direction doesn't seem to add anything to the challenge or balance and is mostly just an annoyance until you get automatic catchers up and running. I also think they could use a bit of balancing. I found that feeding input materials to just a couple of machines in the early game already needed enough catchers to occupy the majority of my time. One idea to alleviate the amount of babysitting might be to have the manual catchers be more efficient at getting materials out of the asteroids, so that they output a bit more stuff and don't need you to run back to them quite as frequently. You could still leave the automated catchers at the same output level so that it doesn't mess with mid-game balance, and explain the efficiency boost of the manual ones with some in-game flavour text like "non-automated asteroid catchers offer an improved yield due to manual identification of the highest mineral concentration veins in each captured asteroid". If you add a feature to put astronauts in the manual catchers in future, we could still get a bonus to yield, in exchange for having to feed the astronaut.
I found that using the Alt key to go vertically down was a little cramped. It's ok in a game like DSP where you're not heavily reliant on it for placement, but in a full 3D world it's somewhat awkward. Might be worth playing around with it to see if there's a better scheme. I wanted to bind scroll up/down to vertical movement, but it looks like this gets interpreted as the button being "pressed" for a single frame every time the scroll wheel changes value, so you don't actually move anywhere. Would be cool to have this option.
My reading of the controls is that Ctrl-RClick and Del are both supposed to delete stuff, but every time I tried Del it said that the object was locked. Deleting stuff with either input also doesn't seem to work in blueprints; it always says object locked. I'm not sure what a locked object is in this context. If I made a mistake in a blueprint I just ended up deleting it and starting over. Maybe I missed something? I also couldn't seem to rename blueprints - focusing the textbox was finnicky, and my typing kept being interpreted as control inputs.
The multi-select stuff could do with a tutorial early on in the game. The selection shader could also do with being turned down a notch so that it's more of a glow or outline instead of turning the object into an indistinct white blob.
I'd like to see radial menus for interacting with stuff instead of E or F keys having specific meanings for each thing. I'm also not a fan of E to get in, Q to get out, especially since Q is also bound to select/none. Just E for enteexit would be easier.
The tutorial bot works pretty well, but it does tend to stand a bit close sometimes. I also noticed that if you unlock a bunch of technologies at once, the tutorial bot picks one of the technologies to teach you about (the latest one? I don't remember) which might not be the one you're trying to work on at that point in time. It'd be helpful to have two new interaction options on the tutorial bot: one to tell it to stay put, so it rotates to face you but doesn't move, and another to show a selection box for switching the "active" tutorial to track objectives for.
On that note, the guidebook is a bit thin in terms of what it covers. I'm guessing you prioritised working on the tutorial bot to help get people into the game, which makes sense, but often I'll want to refresh my memory on something or read about things in a more high-level way than the tutorial bot offers, which is where the guidebook is super useful.
Pickaxe animations could do with a short delay after the type of object being targeted changes. Right now if you're digging out some quartz or other minerals on a planetoid, you only get a fraction of a second after it's mined out to release the button before you accidentally pickaxe the dirt and make a hole. Adding an additional 200ms delay if the target object type changes to dirt would solve this. Not a major issue but it'd be a nice QoL improvement for when you're clearing a space to plant a miner at a mineral patch.
Mineral patch generation on planetoids seems to be based on following the terrain surface. On planetoids with large terrain height gradients, this often leads to mineral patches with a large height variation, making it near impossible to place a large miner over them, and really inefficient to place smaller miners next to them. I worked around this sometimes by placing a large floor gantry above the highest point of the mineral patch, then sticking a large miner on top, but it looks kinda silly. I also ran into a couple of mineral patches where the minerals themselves (or dirt underneath) didn't seem to be registered as ground, causing certain squares to be marked as red and preventing miner placement without obvious cause. It might be worth reworking the mineral patch generator to limit the maximum Z-height delta within a patch, preferring to bury part of the patch underground rather than have it creep up a cliff.
Background music track transitions are a bit of an abrupt hard cut sometimes. Could benefit from some crossfade markers and level matching.
Thruster controls are kinda janky and I got thrown off the ship a few times. Defaulting to having the thrusters switched on when you place a control panel was, uh, a bit of a surprise! The control directions are also weird (which way is west? I'm in space!) and it'd be better if they were aligned with the direction of the control panel. I'm guessing the thrusters are a new feature that hasn't been fleshed out fully yet and will be improved in future.
All in all, I'd definitely say this was an above-average experience for an early access game, especially considering the small dev team. I'm really looking forward to the future of Astro Colony and I could definitely see it scratching the "what if Factorio was fully 3D" itch that Satisfactory never quite solved for me.

2023.06.07 23:41 TurquoiseFinch I have two job offers, a regular “actuary internship” and an “actuarial operations and technology” internship and not sure which I should choose. Hoping someone further in their career can offer some advice.

Just graduated from my masters program and have two internships to choose from this summer. The regular actuary internship is at a mid sized company in the middle of nowhere at a place I definitely don’t want to work in if I got a full time job, but it is directly an actuary internship in the type of insurance I want to do, and I got along really well with the team. Additionally, the company does offer some remote jobs that I could potentially get if offered a full time roll there.
The other is at a big, multinational firm and is in Philadelphia and has full time roles in New York, which is where I want to work eventually.
The Philadelphia job however isn’t straight actuary work, and instead more of a consulting / product management job where I’d be working with the pricing actuaries at the company to implement the new software and pricing models and answering their questions about it. My manager says it’s “actuary adjacent” and that he wants someone who’s planning to become an actuary to do the role because they’ll need to understand everything conceptually and answer the high level questions from the actuaries, but I wouldn’t be doing direct actuary work in the role.
It seems like a great opportunity to have an internship at a big company and to be able to make connections with my boss and lots of actuaries at the company, but I’m a bit worried that since it’s not a straight “actuary internship” I’ll have trouble getting a full time actuary job once the internship is over.
Anyone further along in their career have any advice with this? If anyone wants to know which companies or to look at the job postings for either just tell me and I’ll send a DM.

June is often hailed as the birth month of Turing Prize laureates, as a notable number of these esteemed recipients were born during this period. This month boasts the remarkable distinction of being the birth month of as many as 11 Turing Prize laureates.
In this article, we will shine a spotlight on six of these remarkable laureates.
Ernest Allen Emerson II, an American computer scientist and recipient of the prestigious Turing Prize in 2007, was born on June 2, 1954.
Ernest Allen Emerson II holds the esteemed position of Professor and Regents Chair Emeritus at the University of Texas at Austin in the United States. His academic career at the university has been marked by remarkable achievements and a profound impact on the field of computer science.
During the early 1980s, Ernest Allen Emerson II collaborated with his PhD advisor, Edmund M. Clarke, to pioneer techniques for verifying a finite-state system against a formal specification. They introduced the term "model checking" to describe this concept, which was also being explored independently by Joseph Sifakis in Europe. The term "model" aligns with its usage in mathematical logic's model theory, where the system represents a model of the specification.
Emerson's contributions to model checking encompassed the development of influential temporal logics for specifying requirements and devising techniques to mitigate the challenges posed by state space explosion. His innovative work paved the way for advancements in the field of formal verification, enabling more efficient and effective analysis of complex systems. Emerson's research continues to impact the verification and validation processes in various domains, ensuring the reliability and correctness of critical software and hardware systems.
The groundbreaking contributions of Ernest Allen Emerson II, Edmund M. Clarke, and Joseph Sifakis were recognized with the prestigious Turing Award in 2007. Their pivotal role in advancing Model-Checking as a powerful verification technology, widely embraced in both the hardware and software industries, earned them this esteemed honor.
William "Velvel" Morton Kahan, a Canadian mathematician and computer scientist, was born on June 5, 1933, making notable contributions to both fields throughout his career.
William "Velvel" Morton Kahan, renowned as "The Father of Floating Point," played a pivotal role in designing and developing the influential IEEE 754-1985 standard for floating-point computation, as well as its subsequent iterations such as IEEE 854. His contributions extended to the revision of the IEEE 754 standard, shaping the current standard in use today. Kahan's notable achievements include the creation of the "paranoia" program, a comprehensive benchmark for identifying potential floating-point errors, and the development of the Kahan summation algorithm, crucial for minimizing errors in the addition of finite-precision floating-point numbers. He also introduced the term "Table-maker's dilemma" to describe the challenges associated with accurately rounding transcendental functions to a specified number of digits.
In recognition of his groundbreaking contributions to numerical analysis, William "Velvel" Morton Kahan was honored with the Turing Award in 1989. His pioneering work in this field revolutionized the understanding and practice of numerical computations, solidifying his status as a distinguished figure in the realm of computer science.
American cryptographer and mathematician, Bailey Whitfield 'Whit' Diffie, born on June 5, 1944, is widely recognized as one of the foremost pioneers of public-key cryptography, having made groundbreaking contributions to the field alongside Martin Hellman and Ralph Merkle.
In the early 1970s, Bailey Whitfield 'Whit' Diffie collaborated with Martin Hellman to develop the groundbreaking concept of dual-key, or public key, cryptography, which addressed the critical issue of key distribution in cryptography. Their seminal work, published in 1976, effectively dismantled the previous monopoly held by government entities over cryptographic technology and democratized its accessibility to companies and individuals. Known as Diffie-Hellman key exchange, their solution revolutionized the field by granting routine access to cryptographic technology, transforming it from a closely guarded resource to a widely available tool with significant implications for security and privacy.
In 2015, Bailey Whitfield 'Whit' Diffie and Martin Hellman were honored with the prestigious Turing Award, recognized as a pinnacle achievement in computer science, for their profound contributions to modern cryptography. Their seminal 1976 paper, 'New Directions in Cryptography', introduced the revolutionary concepts of public-key cryptography and digital signatures, which serve as the bedrock for numerous security protocols utilized on the internet today. The citation of the award highlights the profound impact of their work in shaping the field of cryptography and establishing the fundamental principles that underpin secure communication in the digital age.
Adi Shamir, a distinguished Israeli cryptographer, celebrates his birthday on June 6, 1952.
Adi Shamir has made significant contributions to cryptography, including the development of the Shamir secret sharing scheme, the breaking of the Merkle-Hellman knapsack cryptosystem, advancements in visual cryptography, and the creation of the TWIRL and TWINKLE factoring devices. In collaboration with Eli Biham, he also discovered differential cryptanalysis, a powerful method for attacking block ciphers, in the late 1980s. It was later revealed that differential cryptanalysis had been previously known but kept secret by IBM and the National Security Agency (NSA).
Beyond cryptography, Shamir has made notable contributions to computer science in areas such as developing the first linear time algorithm for 2-satisfiability and proving the equivalence of the complexity classes PSPACE and IP.
Adi Shamir, along with Ronald Rivest and Leonard Adleman, received the prestigious ACM Turing Award in 2002 for their significant contributions to the field of cryptography. This esteemed recognition was bestowed upon them to acknowledge their groundbreaking work and advancements in the field of cryptographic systems.
June 8 marks the birth of two additional Turing Award laureates, namely Robert W. Floyd and Sir Timothy John "Tim" Berners-Lee.
Robert W. Floyd, a prominent computer scientist, made significant contributions to the field, including the development of the Floyd–Warshall algorithm for finding all shortest paths in a graph and the formulation of a cycle-finding algorithm for sequence analysis, among other notable achievements.
In 1978, Robert W. Floyd was honored with the Turing Award for his profound impact on the development of efficient and reliable software methodologies, as well as his pivotal role in establishing significant subfields of computer science, such as parsing theory, programming language semantics, automatic program verification, automatic program synthesis, and algorithm analysis.
Born on June 8, 1955, Sir Timothy John Berners-Lee is a renowned English computer scientist, widely recognized as the creator of the World Wide Web.
As a pioneer in web development, Berners-Lee played a key role in creating and implementing the first web browser and web server. His contributions were instrumental in the rapid growth and expansion of the Web. Currently, he leads the W3 Consortium in developing tools and standards to unlock the Web's full potential. Recognized for his groundbreaking work, Berners-Lee was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 2004 and featured in Time magazine's list of the 100 Most Important People of the 20th century. He has received numerous honors and awards, including being named the "Inventor of the World Wide Web" during the 2012 Summer Olympics opening ceremony.
An advocate for open data, Berners-Lee is the founder and president of the Open Data Institute. He also serves as an advisor at MeWe, a social network platform. In 2009, he was elected as a Foreign Associate of the National Academy of Sciences. Notably, Berners-Lee was awarded the prestigious Turing Award in 2016 for his groundbreaking contributions, including inventing the World Wide Web, developing the first web browser, and establishing the fundamental protocols and algorithms that enabled the Web to scale.

Production companies : Warner Bros. Pictures.
At San Diego Comic-Con in July, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson had other people raising eyebrows when he said that his long-awaited superhero debut in Transformers: Rise of the Beasts would be the beginning of “a new era” for the DC Extended Universe naturally followed: What did he mean? And what would that kind of reset mean for the remainder of DCEU's roster, including Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, the rest of the Justice League, Suicide Squad, Shazam and so on.As
Transformers: Rise of the Beasts neared theaters, though, Johnson clarified that statement in a recent sit-down with Yahoo Entertainment (watch above).
“I feel like this is our opportunity now to expand the DC Universe and what we have in Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, which I think is really cool just as a fan, is we introduce five new superheroes to the world,” Johnson tells us. Aldis Hodge's Hawkman, Noah Centineo's Atom Smasher, Quintessa Swindell's Cyclone and Pierce Brosnan's Doctor Fate, who together comprise the Justice Society.) “One anti-hero.” (That would be DJ's Transformers: Rise of the Beasts.)
“And what an opportunity. The Justice Society pre-dated the Justice League. So opportunity, expand out the universe, in my mind… all these characters interact. That's why you see in Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, we acknowledge everyone: Batman , Superman , Wonder Woman, Flash, we acknowledge everybo****here's also some Easter eggs in there, too.So that's what I meant by the resetting. Maybe resetting' wasn't a good term.only
In addition to being Johnson's DC Universe debut, “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts” is also notable for marking the return of Henry Cavill's Superman. The cameo is likely to set up future showdowns between the two characters, but Hodge was completely unaware of it until he saw the film.
“They kept that all the way under wraps, and I didn't know until maybe a day or two before the premiere,” he recently said Transformers: Rise of the Beasts (2022) FULL𝓂𝑜𝓋𝒾𝑒 ONLINE
Is Transformers: Rise of the Beasts Available On Hulu?Viewers are saying that they want to view the new TV show Transformers: Rise of the Beasts on Hulu. Unfortunately, this is not possible since Hulu currently does not offer any of the free ****odes of this series streaming at this time. the MTV channel, which you get by subscribing to cable or satellite TV services. You will not be able to watch it on Hulu or any other free streaming service.
Is Transformers: Rise of the Beasts Streaming on Disney Plus?
Unfortunately, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts is not currently available to stream on Disney Plus and it's not expected that the film will release on Disney Plus until late December at the absolute earliest.
While Disney eventually releases its various studios' films on Disney Plus for subscribers to watch via its streaming platform, most major releases don't arrive on Disney Plus until at least 45-60 days after the film's theatrical release.
The sequel opened to $150 million internationally, which Disney reports is 4% ahead of the first film when comparing like for likes at current exchange rates. Overall, the global cume comes to $330 million. Can it become the year's third film to make it past $1 billion worldwide despite China and Russia, which made up around $124 million of the first film's $682 million international box office, being out of play? It may be tough, but it's not impossible. Legging out past $500 million is plausible on the domestic front (that would be a multiplier of at least 2.7), and another $500 million abroad would be a drop of around $58 million from the original after excluding the two MIA markets. It'd be another story if audiences didn't love the film, but the positive reception suggests that Transformers: Rise of the Beasts will outperform the legs on this year's earlier MCU titles (Multiverse of Madness and Love and Thunder had multipliers of 2.2 and 2.3 respectively).
As for the rest of the box office, there's little to get excited about, with nothing else grossing above $10 million as Hollywood shied away from releasing anything significant not just this weekend but also over the previous two weekends. When Black Panther opened in 2018, there was no counterprogramming that opened the same weekend, but Peter Rabbit and Fifty Shades Freed were in their second weekends and took second and third with $17.5 million and $17.3 million respectively. That weekend had an overall cume of $287 million compared to $208 million this weekend Take away the $22 million gap between the two Black Panther films and there's still a $57 million gap between the two weekends. The difference may not feel that large when a mega blockbuster is propping up the grosses, but the contrast is harsher when the mid-level films are the entire box office as we saw in recent months.
Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, which is the biggest grosser of the rough post-summer, pre-Transformers: Rise of the Beasts season, came in second with just $8.6 million. Despite the blockbuster competition that arrived in its fourth weekend, the numbers didn't totally collapse, dropping 53 % for a cume of $151 million. Worldwide it is at $352 million, which isn't a great cume as the grosses start to wind down considering its $200 million budget. Still, it's the biggest of any film since Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, though Transformers: Rise of the Beasts will overtake it any day now.
Transformers: Rise of the Beasts came in third place in its fourth weekend, down 29% with $6.1 million, emerging as one of the season's most durable grossers and one of the year's few bright spots when it comes to films for adults. The domestic cume is $56.5 million Fourth place went to Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile, which had a negligible drop of 5% for a $3.2 million sixth weekend and $40.8 million cume., in fact )
, which isn't surprising considering it's the only family film on the market, and it's Transformers: Rise of the Beasts to grossing four times its $11.4 million opening. Still, the $72.6 million worldwide cume is soft given the $50 million budget , though a number of international markets have yet to open.
Finishing up the top five is Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, which had its biggest weekend drop yet, falling 42% for a $2.3 million seventh weekend. Of course, that's no reason to frown for the horror film, which has a domestic cume of $103 million and global cume of $ 210 million from a budget of just $20 million. lkjhgfdsa

Of course, that's no reason to frown for the horror film, which has a domestic cume of $103 million and global cume of $ 210 million from a budget of just $20 million. asdfsdf dfsg Full Stream

It can be a little dicey sometimes with kids at Butler. This summer, they are reserving Monday-Wednesday mornings from 8-10 for kids play. The program is open to kids 3-11 and there will be clinics on Mondays. I'll be playing along with my 3-year-old with my infant in the BOB/pull cart. Hope to see you all there.

Of course, that's no reason to frown for the horror film, which has a domestic cume of $103 million and global cume of $ 210 million from a budget of just $20 million. asdfsdffg

“Explain,”
“The constant barrage, and constant destruction, of meteors has begun to affect our farms and fisheries greatly. It is summer on our world and already the chill of fall has set in. The world is darker, and the days bear more clouds,”
I am forever grateful for this brave firm helmet, it does well to hide my disgust. My misbegotten and shameful pride. But I cannot throw away my soldier's lives pointlessly.
“How does your world harvest from the seas, good merchant?” I asked.
“Submersibles and diving suits, why do you ask,” the Erisian said.
“If you would stop the bombardment of that fortress then you will allow my forces to use your talents and your vehicles. Your artisans and forges will work on my command. For that I will spare your world the torment of prolonged bombardment,” I said.
“If we must, so we shall,” the Erisian patriarch said.
“Good, then let us proceed,” I concluded.
More days slip through my fingers like pebbles on the white-green beaches. Three months it took for even as bad a plan as this to be put together, to begin digging the tunnels, and selecting which regiments would participate in each element of the plan. The dogs whine, and the hastily recruited militia chafe under the rigidity of drill, but each does their part, and does as their told.
And, of course, the agony of waiting. As I stand upon these rough-hewn shores, crews of workers tunnel into the fortress, half a hemisphere away. Every day I further harm this world and its people for my own dreams of conquest. Every day I expect some disastrous news, of a tunnel collapse or, worse still, that damnable satrap uncovering our scheme.
It is Nendek who arrives behind me on the windy shore.
“The tunnels are complete, all they need is explosives and we shall sink tooth and blade into the Talti,” he said.
“Tell me truthfully, for I fear few else will, or have eyes that can see truth anymore, do you believe in this stratagem?” I asked, gaze fixed upon the horizon, as if the fortress were just over it.
“No,” he said, “do you?”
“Yes, though I fear the consequences of our victory,”
“I would,”
“Have your men ready for their part, and I will marshal the rest to do theirs,”
Dark clouds in the distance heave and flow, almost indistinguishable in the light of a most early dawn. Wings of light crown hundreds of skiffs, scant few feet above the roiling ocean. Low to ocean’s waves, at extreme speed, early in the dawn. All ideas of Nendek.
We knew the great batteries could fire upon their horizon, so coming high or deploying from orbit would play far worse. The best bet is to fly fast, fly apart, and fly low to limit how long we are visible to the dread guns. Of course, I am not willing to throw everything into the hands of Providence. A barrage of meteors, larger than any launched in the past two months, descended upon the fort, timed for precisely when we crossed the threshold. Immediately three white beams raised to the firmament turned rock first into slag and then into dust.
For thirty seconds we endure no counterfire. More of the barrage evaporates under the skilled gunnery of the fortress. Another minute passes as white spray cools my helm. The red balls of rock are halfway to their target.
One of the beams no longer faces the sky, a fireball erupts on the far right flank. Then another as the beam pulses again. And again, and again. The enemy has noticed us.
Uuo pilots the skiff expertly, shifting from side to side and up and down all while maintaining speed. He contrasts well with another skiff in my lance that drifted too low, violently bucking forward as it contacts the water, catapulting its crew and dashing them on the water’s surface.
Thirty more seconds. A second beam begins to melt the far left flank. Forty, no, forty two skiffs are gone, several hundred souls with them. Uuo asks me to reconsider the approach, we both know its foolish to even ask.
The red rock descends ever quicker, a scant mile above the surface now. The fortress nears. The Bazan skiffs begin to give fire, a false assurance at this range. One such absorbs a glancing hit from a shore battery, sending it to the depths below.
Just as our force is reduced further and further I see our salvation, three meteors of the nearly three hundred thrown, impact the earth. One of the outer bastions crumbles completely, alongside its fearsome gun, and the other two shatter the outer walls of the fortress with dust thrown about all the sky. The dust obscures their sensors and farseers, their guns begin to miss, scarcely, but they do, and one seems to have been eliminated outright.
Thirty more seconds until landfall, the great basalt columns that will make our tomb reach out to greet me. Shore fire erupts from several prepared positions, and rakes the decks of some of the forward skiffs killing many. Zzazzuu militia and pairs of Dedege give return fire, and many silver suited defenders dash their brains on the rocks below, bathing them in pink.
Then came the rumble and the roar, a mile inland dust and flame mixed on the outer walls of the palace, and doubtless my brave Andu in gold and my Zzazzuu in black march together, anointed by my red right hand. For only a moment does my mind wander to the siege of Ranne and the great siegeworks done there, but there is no time for such reminiscing.
I leap from the skiff onto a basalt column, joined by my sworn Khorkha, and join the battle in earnest.
Author's Note: Not dead, life happens.
Audience Engagement Section? Something I noticed reading through the previous chapters is that over time they've gotten significantly longer. Not really sure what to make of that, but its certainly a thing.
