2023.06.02 01:11 Salt-Theory2359 Dear Hello Games: Please stop forcing updates on players

I was having a great time playing your game with some pretty fun mods. Your recent update, which am required to obtain, broke the mods and I can therefore not play your excellent, fun game until such time as modders are able to update their mods, or at least the tools required to update mods are themselves updated. Sometimes this is only a day or two, but there have been cases where it is much longer.
I do not have the option to decline the update, even in offline mode - the game will simply insist it must be updated and will not launch.
I think it is absolutely wonderful that your team has continued to support the game for so many years after launch, and has done so with absolutely zero additional cost to players or ways of trying to exploit them for extra revenue such as cosmetic item sales. But when you made the game mod-able in a much earlier update, a lot of players developed mods for your game, to expand it in ways that your team likely does not have time to or perhaps not even interest in expanding it in those given directions.
By forcing updates on players, and the way those updates more or less invariably break existing mods, this creates a very uncomfortable arrangement for players who use mods - we are excited to see the new update and what your team has developed for the game, but this comes simultaneously with being effectively forced to stop playing the game for some period of time, as many mods don't work well being "turned off" and then "turned back on" again on the same save, especially mods which make alterations to terrain and biome generation or change how solar systems are laid out.
These updates are also often substantial in size. This one measures 9GB according to what Steam's doing right now. While I have the luxury of good internet here at home, not everyone will have access to good internet but may still wish to play your game while they are traveling (hotels do not often have bandwidth good for downloading large files or streaming above 1080p resolution) or in an area with limited internet access.
I'm sure there are numerous factors at work here, few of which I am aware of or would understand. But requiring players to update the game to continue playing, even as those updates break the mods those players have been enjoying, creates a really unpleasant environment around what should be enjoyable and exciting. Is there no possible way that we can continue playing on an older version of the game, even if that meant no multiplayer features at all?

2023.06.02 01:03 recoveringeverything Help me decide between four different estimates (all of which recommend different work)

The outdoor a/c unit in our roughly 3,000 sq ft home in the southeastern U.S. is kaput. We've had four different contractors give us estimates, and the results are all over the place. They are all licensed, insured, and seem honest. But I realize there is a sales aspect here (not a pejorative), and I'd really like some input from Reddit.
The house is a split level with three separate floors. The upper and bottom floors sit on top of each other, and then the middle floor is on the other side of the structure. It sits over a large garage that definitely ends up taking a lot of the cool air. The thermostat is on the lowest floor (none of which is below grade)
1 - The first estimate is from sort of the Walmart of HVAC companies in our metro area. They were out several times over the past month trying to fix the system, to no avail. Then they sent an engineer, who recommended replacement of the outdoor unit. We just bought this house in the winter (yes, sucks), and it turns out there is a mismatch in the system - outdoor unit is a 5 ton Goodman, but the evaporator coil is only rated to 3.5 tons. The indoor furnace is an off-brand unit that is also not compatible with a 5-ton outdoor unit. Forgive me if I'm misusing terms here.
Anyway, like I said, the first company recommended replacement of the outdoor unit (with another 5 ton), evaporator coil, and some additional work for a total of around $8k.
2 - the second company came out and said it didn’t make sense to replace only the outdoor unit, given that the indoor unit is fairly old and in fair (ie not good but not exactly bad) shape. I mentioned that even when the system was working (more or less), the air floor upstairs seemed weak, and it was a few degrees warmer up there.
He recommended replacement of both the indoor and outdoor units, with a 4-ton a/c, and a variable speed indoor unit (both Rheem). And then he recommended that we zone this system three ways, placing a thermostat on each floor. Our duct work is, apparently, already largely compatible with a zoning system, though this company wants to install two new return vents. They quoted us for both a 14.3 seer ($17,500 total) and a 16 seer ($22,500 total). Both variable.
3 - the third company came out and agreed that the work suggested by No. 1 (replacing the outdoor unit and coil only) wasn't economical. They also recommended a zoned system with a 4-ton outdoor unit and three separate zones (Trane). They didn't think they need to do anything to the duct work or add any returns, etc. They did quote me for a 14 seer, single speed unit with no zoning for just under $9k. Then they also quoted a 14 seer, single speed zoned system for $12k, and a 17 seer, variable speed system for $14,5.
4- the fourth company also agreed that No. 1's recommendation didn't make sense. They recommended a 5-ton, zoned system with two zones (top floor and bottom floor). Also Trane. They quoted me for a 18 seer full variable speed zoned system at $18,5, and a 15 seer single stage zoned system at $13,5. If I pay cash, those totals drop to $17k and $12,5k, respectively.
I've also talked with my dad, who is a general contractor. He has far more knowledge re: HVAC than I but is by no means an expert. He said he didn't think a zoned system was necessary, and that if it tends to be hotter upstairs (where we sleep), we could just move the thermostat to the top level. He recommended a variable speed system and said we could just leave the fan on low at all times...his view was that this would help distribute the cool air throughout the house. He also said there was no reason to go too high seer wise, as it likely wouldn't end up being a financial benefit in the long run.
So now I'm trying to decide what to do. I grew up in the north and now live more or less in the deep south. I like it cool when I sleep...like thermostat to 70 at the highest cool (although I've only ever had older HVAC systems). My wife feels the same way.
It does seem to make sense to replace both the indoor and outdoor unit if we're going to do this work. It also seems like a variable speed system would be the best choice. And then I think I get my dad's point about seer - it seems like so long as the system has variable speed capability, there isn't any reason for me to go over 14-15 seer. So really, I think I'm trying to decide between 4 ton and 5 ton, and whether to have a zoned system. But I would definitely welcome your input on any of that (include input designed to disabuse me of any of the ideas I expressed in this paragraph).
I get the feeling that I can call any of these companies and talk with them about changing things up - removing the zoning component, using a lower seer that still offers variable speed, etc.

Need advice…
Dallas County
We are first time home buyers and this is the first time we filed a tax protest. We got a settlement offer for exactly the price we paid for the house back in December 2021. Purchase price: $201k
There was no increase in the appraised and market value from last year. Appraised & Market Value for 2022-2023: $211,310
At this point is it worth it to decline their offer and go to the hearing or should we just accept their settlement offer and move on?
The house to our left and right are abandoned and very deteriorated. We see people tresspassing and drinking at those houses all the time. This why I think our appraised value should be less than we paid back then.
This is all new and confusing to us. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I'm taking the kids (23- 20- and 18) to Ireland in October for the first time. I've been there before so this trip is mostly for them. I want them to see as much as we can but not so much that we miss the details if that makes sense. We're also looking to get some kind of family tattoos while we are there. Not sure of what. They don't all have to match and they don't have to be anything Irish. Was thinking more travel/ family related. But I have no idea where the best place to do this would be. Here is the itinerary so far. I'm more than open to suggestions!

Throughout college, I worked jobs not oriented to my career; seasonal, barista, university reporter..
In my 3 years post graduation, I’ve worked for 4 different companies as a sales representative. The first was 36K base so dipped out quick. Got PIP’d out of the next, and left the third for a much higher paying job.
My tenure is not good, but what I know is it’s not my character, I’m just not that good at selling (cold calling, etc). At least at high frequencies.
With tech and work from home (WFH) being a huge trend, I’m sure many ppl are in similar positions being in sales.
What careers outside of sales can I use my experience to transition to? Am I stuck in the gulags of sales?

This is going to be a long post but here I go anyway. My name is Liam, I have never been in a romantic relationship before. I know I’m young and I might get lucky one day, no one knows what the future holds. Anyway moving on. I’ll be honest and say I’m not that good looking but I am mature for my age. To describe my appearance, I’m white, 5’5, average build, blue eyes and have black hair. I’ll be happy to share pictures in chat if anyone is curious. I’m very shy and introverted but I do try my best to have a conversation. I’ve been told I’m funny and nerdy but also have a nice personality as well. My star sign is Capricorn but that’s all I know about it. My favourite hobbies (if you could call them that) are playing video games, watching movies/tv shows and occasionally reading books. Hi all! So here’s the situation: I played pretty competitively until I finished high school. After that, with all the twists and turns of life, I didn’t really play at all for the following 12-13 years. About 2 years ago, I got back into it again, and I’ve been obsessed to say the least. I treated myself to a blade 98 v7 and a PS97 v13, jumping back and forth between them over about a year. Then I got hit with the gear bug, and decided to try a 2022 Ezone 98. Then I noticed the 2020 Ezone tours go on sale, and picked one of those up, and then another, as I’ve been really enjoying those and finding my game with them.
The other day, I was hitting next to someone who was using an older Wilson ncode six-one 95, and was hitting beautifully. When I used to play competitively, I had used that racquet, along with the tour 90 version, and knew that I had two of each somewhere at home, and that it would be fun to have one strung and try it out again. I searched around my house and eventually found them. The issue is, both of the 95’s had a broken string in the mains, and had been sitting that way for a good 15 years. I didn’t think that there’d be an issue with it, but the other day, saw an unrelated post where someone was asking if a few racquets they saw on eBay were a good deal. The picture showed a racquet with a broken string, and someone had questioned how long the racquet stayed that way, as the racquet could warp. So, I decided to look into it, and it seems like some people mention that it’s bad to keep a broken string on a racquet for an extended period of time, while others note that it’s a myth, with that not really being an issue with more modern racquet technology. I could see that being the case with wooden racquets, but agree that it does seem more like it’d be a myth, despite the length of time it sat. So, what do people think about the myth of the warped racquet? Is there something to worry about in regards to the racquet having sat this way for 15 years? Has anyone had experience re-stringing a racquet that sat in a similar manner for an extended period of time? Thanks!
