Billing Requirements/ Salary Expectations For Entry Level/ First Year Insurance Defense Associate
2023.04.01 23:15 throwawayatty124 Billing Requirements/ Salary Expectations For Entry Level/ First Year Insurance Defense Associate
Throwaway account because from what I've been told I'm getting absolutely fucked, even by insurance defense standards. I'll preface everything here by saying that I really don't mind working hard and know that being an entry-level/ first year associate is a universally miserable experience but the general consensus is that I am being severely undervalued.
TL;DR: I'm a first year associate making less than 60k a year. I really enjoy my job and the opportunities available to me but am starting to hear from others that, for the hours I bill, I am being severely undervalued. I'm currently feeling very stuck and helpless because I really don't want to lateral but cannot justify asking for a raise when I am not meeting my managing partners' expectation that I bill 550-600 hours per quarter.
I'm really embarrassed to be here, but I really just don't know what to do at this point. I accepted an offer for my current position in 2021 and due to a failed bar attempt did not actually start the position until mid-Q2 in 2022. My base salary is $58k and I am in city with a relatively low cost of living.
It is my understanding that my base salary is a little south of market rate, but not particularly egregious for entry-level ID in my area. With bad grades and a failed bar attempt, I was just happy to have a job. However, whenever the topic of billing requirements comes up, people are very quick to tell me that I am getting hosed. When I took this job I was told there were no billing requirements for first year associates, and as far as I can tell our main office does not have set billing requirements for anyone. We have a pretty competitive bonus structure that kicks in at 2000 hours per year, but I've never seen anything from anyone in our main office to suggest that there is a hard and fast billable requirement. Additionally, anything regarding billing expectations or goals that does come out of our main office basically includes a disclaimer to associates who have been practicing less than two years that it isn't directed at them.
This isn't my experience with the managing partner in the office I work in. Not even close. While my hours are consistently improving month-to month, I'm really worried about them being enough while becoming increasingly aware that the billables expected of me are significantly higher than the billables that are expected of first years at other firms. Given my interactions with other people in the firm, I am almost certain that the pressure I am under has more to do with the managing partner here than our head offices. At the beginning of the year, a goal of 550 hours for Q1 (2200/ year) was set. This goal was specific to me, for this quarter only, and is 200 hours short of the yearly number expected of the attorneys in my office.
Spoiler alert: I did not meet this goal. My hours this quarter would suggest that I am on track to meet 1800 in 2023, but I'm pretty confident that this number will be closer to 2000. With the exception of March, I have been consistently improving. March was a bad month for me as I was out of the office for about a week for a couple of marketing events, which is a part of my job that I really enjoy minus the fact I feel like these efforts are overlooked. Obviously my hours could stand to improve, and improving upon them is 100% the plan, but I am also struggling with the expectation that I bust my ass for less than 60k a year. Billing is a learned skill and I am learning, but I'm not there yet. Even assuming that I hit the lowest bonus tier the remaining 3 quarters, it's not going to get me above $60k.
I know the easy answer is to lateral, and it's tempting. But I do really like my job and the people I work with, aside from the fact that I feel extremely taken advantage of when I talk with my peers about billing requirements. I've also had the opportunity to engage in marketing efforts that are normally reserved for upper-level associates and partners, and I think that my willingness to do so has been noticed by some of the high-level partners in our main office who are starting to include me in more of these opportunities. I'm not sure how common it is elsewhere, but our firm does allow us to collect commissions, and I've already been able to submit an application to do so on a couple of cases because of these opportunities. To me, asking my managing partner for a raise isn't an option. Regardless of how I feel about the expectation that I bill 2200-2400 hours as a first year associate, the reality is that I'm not meeting it. I'm bad at billing, but not tone-deaf.
Clearly though, this isn't sustainable. It's very difficult to justify to myself and to my family the number of hours I am working for so little pay. But I guess I'm here because I'm wondering if it would be foolish for me have hope that it will actually get better? Commissions will come in, billing will get easier, and I'll get some sort of raise when we do annual reviews this summer. Because those annual reviews include partners from across the firm and it is my understanding that the people at our main office are really happy with my performance, I expect things to go pretty well. I just feel stuck, and am honestly spiraling because I know that when my quarterly hours come in it will not be pretty.
If you made it all the way down here, thanks for reading. I appreciate any and all suggestions or encouragement you may have.

2023.04.01 23:14 PurpleAd8354 Test on Monday:feedback on writing
TASK Some people claim that the government should provide free healthcare to all of its citizens. Others think that the government cannot provide the best treatment for everyone and that money should be spent on other important sectors. Discuss both views and give your own opinion
Different states have different welfare services. One of the most discuss is healthcare that sometimes is provided for free by the country while other times, if you want to have access to medical treatments, you need to pay an insurance. Some people prefer the last option because they want the possibility to freely choose while, others people included me, think that this is an essential service that must be provided to everyone. People who don't want free healthcare usually argue that if the government provides the medical services the quality level of them would dicrease compared to private hospitals. Some people also want to be free to choose to pay for the insurance medical services or save money and take the risky decision of not having it. There are people who believe that taking care of all people, no matter what, it is a wasting of money because healtcare field required really expensive machines and tools and investing in them become a limitation for other sectors to develop. Also, some of this young citizens, don't want to give their money through taxes for a service that help more older people rather than them. Although this people might have reasonable ideas from an economic point of view other people believe that medical healthcare is an essential right. Finding yourself in a difficult situation is something that can unfortunately happen to everyone and the last thing you want to do in that situation is probably being worried about your bank account. There are many examples of the issues connected with healthcare problems in the US, a country where this service is not provided to everyone, where people from difficult background cannot pay off the debts they made for going to an hospital. I think also, and my prospective is from a young guy in a good health state, that providing medical treatments to everyone is something that will be gived back to me. In fact, hopefully, when I will be old I will be helped by my country service and so, even from an economic and selfish prospective, paying healthcare for old people it's not a wasting money. In conclusion I believe that health is something really fragile and the best option it's always to be safe about that. Even if in a short period of time healthcare that is not provided by the country might seems the best option, I believe that in long term it will be pay off. This is also not considering that free healthcare should be also a human right and a central service in our modern welfare systems.

2023.04.01 23:08 AspiringPio Looking for guidance on my next upcoming credit card applications!
Hello everyone!
I was hoping to gain some better insight on my thoughts for my CC loadout. I've banked with Chase for a number of years and I've wanted to make the most out of the Chase ecosystem. I'm scheduled this upcoming Friday to hopefully secure the CSP for the awesome SUB and I do have some big purchases coming up that would offset the sign on payment. This would complete my chase trifecta and it'll be nice to have this set up. I do want to continue expanding though to gain a better umbrella on cashback and also travel. I want to get the Bilt card to help with rent and the 1x back would be nice to utilize for a trip, but I am not thrilled with the 5x transactions/month. For those that have this card, is it worth it? I also want to apply for the Venture X for travel and it seems like the card pays for itself if you travel which I plan to do in the upcoming year. From what I've read from denials and approvals of this card, how long should I wait to apply? Should I apply for Venture x first or bilt? Do any of you have better suggestions? I know there are a lot of questions here, but I genuinely would appreciate any feedback or suggestions. Thanks!

2023.04.01 23:06 caprica6ixx Public darkroom facility in the Salem area?
I’m moving to Salem this month, and I’m trying to figure out if there are any darkrooms in the area that allow members of the public to pay by the hour to use. I’m not finding any businesses doing this, but it does sound like Willamette has a darkroom and maybe Chemeketa? Does anyone have any info on whether the colleges or anywhere else have a darkroom I can use? Thanks for any tips/info!

2023.04.01 23:05 holycostog I&E Field service tech compensation
So I’ve been working at a company that does water treatment. We use various instruments for flow, pH, conductivity, silica, level, pressure, etc. When I started I was a journeyman electrician that was finishing an associates degree in instrumentation of Fall 2021.
That being said I was offered $33 an hour. In February I was given a $0.50 raise even though I hadn’t been there a year to qualify for a raise at all. Now that I’ve been here about a year and a half I just now got another cost of living raise putting me at $34.80 or 4%.
I’m trying to gauge where others think the pay for this type of position should be. I take care of issues for an entire region which means multiple sites and I have to keep track of parts ordered and finishing work at these sites to get them back up to 100%. One site currently has about 4 issues I’m keeping track of including researching appropriate equipment needed to correct issues, ordering, tracking order and then scheduling to install.
Since I’ve been here I have been recognized as someone who can go to a site and solve issues. This has people calling me all the time to visit sites, ask me questions, and have me walk sites and attend meetings. I also drive a company truck. They pay for tools, site specific training, and frc clothing as needed. Just have to do my monthly expense reports for my company credit card.
Am I being unreasonable thinking I should be getting more than what I’m being offered? I know I&E techs at plants around me start off at $42 an hour.

- Learn about the future of media and code — the front-end and backend of the internet — so you can focus your efforts.
- Understand digital leverage, distribution, no-code tools, and digital assets so you can take part in the mental & financial wealth transfer.
Phase 1) Creating A Meaningful Niche Every day I hear people going on and on about trying to find their niche.I also hear people talking about how they don’t know how to combine what they love talking about with what will sell. You already have the answer. You just don’t have the clarity. - Develop a long-term strategy to create your own niche — meaning you don’t have to worry about your “competition” playing status games.
- Discover your life’s work, curiosities, and obsessions. I see too many people that are uncertain about this for years.
- Cultivate and turn your vision, goals, and values into a brand that attracts an audience you love interacting with (and that will buy from you, and only you).
Phase 2) Content Strategy There is one thing that separates those who make it in the digital economy and those who don’t.It’s the quality, articulation, and perceived originality of their content. The content you post has to make sense to the people you attract.Everyone has a different voice and tone that they resonate with. That they are congruent with and trust. It has to change their thought patterns or behavior — that’s what makes you memorable. That’s what separates you from the sea of people posting surface-level copy-cat style posts.Example and putting my money where my mouth is: - Become an expert-level speaker or writer on the topics you care about.
- Never run out of content ideas for your posts or promotions (without using content templates — that’s how you stay a commodity).
- Create posts, blogs, tweets, images, and videos that resonate with other’s on a deep level. People will actually ask you how you got so good at what you do.
- Separate yourself from the ocean of B-tier creators that struggle to sell their products, services, andhave their ideas stick in the head of their audience.
- Implement our Epistemic Research Method — which is just a fancy way of saying scientific research method… but it’s for researching your mind to craft brilliant content and product ideas.
Phase 3) Crafting Your Offer Most people are sitting on a goldmine of skills, experience, and knowledge ( that they can use to help people 1-2 steps behind them). That is what people pay for.Considering 95% of the market are beginners… if you are good at something, you can help them get to your level ( no matter how “basic” you think the information is).Do you not watch basic content all day anyway? People don’t want new information, they want to be reminded of what works. - Use our Minimum Viable Offer strategy to start monetizing immediately (and have something to improve over time, rather than procrastinating until it’s perfect).
- Have a strategy for reducing the time you spend working over time (as you build leverage and improve your offer).
- Know how to create your own customers from the audience you are building, instead of “finding” the right customer for your offer.
- Take the guesswork out of building coaching, consulting, or digital product offers.
Phase 4) Marketing Strategy You aren’t making money because you aren’t promoting yourself or your offer. That is literally the only way to make money. Have something desirable and consistently put it in front of peoples’ faces. In Phase 4, I will show you how to systemize, automate, and be consistent with simple promotions. You will be able to make money without having the chance of forgetting to do it (or letting fear of failure get in the way). - Learn to sell on social media, in your writing, and across different platforms.
- Have consistent sales coming in while focusing on your meaningful message (no need to sound salesy all the time).
- Learn advanced automation strategies that you can implement at your own pace, especially once you validate your offer.
Bonus) The Creator Command Center The Creator Command Center is a Notion template that houses all of the systems. This is how you will manage your brand, content, offer creation, marketing strategy, and systemized promotions for consistent sales. Bonus) Live Product Build & Launch In the first Digital Economics Cohort, I built out my course The 2 Hour Writer.I have videos showing how I build it with the strategies in phase 3 and 4.There is a bonus module that shows how I had an $85,000 launch that resulted in my first $100K month.I did this to prove the strategies inside Digital Economics work if you stick to the plan. And, this past Black Friday, I blew my that monthly high out of the water in 4 days. That’s the power of these strategies if you stay consistent with your life’s work. submitted by AutoModerator to GenkiCourses_2023 [link] [comments] |

2023.04.01 23:04 Next-Entry-5884 AITA for turning my friend in to work when I suspected him of drug use?
I (m 18) work with my friend (m 17) at a theme park part time alongside college.
As I'm sure you can imagine, our work has a strict no alcohol and drugs policy as we operate rides and heavy machinery and look after the general public. It was stated in our induction when we joined the company and has been reiterated in meetings countless times, stating that if we were ever to be caught operating rides whilst under the influence we could be charged with the same crime as drink driving. They also threaten frequent drug tests but usually only do so when they are suspicious of someone.
My friend (we'll call him Isaac) is a regular drug user in the sense that I've always known him to do drugs in his free time. These drugs have varied in severity from drugs such as weed to straight up pills and ketamine. He's also very upfront about doing drugs and talks to people about it, including people from work, like it's a completely normal thing to talk about. I myself have only smoked weed once or twice and didn't overly enjoy the experience but can see why people do as I do enjoy drinking. The issue is is that everyone at work is aware that Isaac does drugs but also turn a blind eye to it.
Yesterday, I saw that Isaac had posted a TikTok saying that he was going to get drugs the second he gets paid (we get paid weekly and he would've just gotten paid that day). I also saw on his story that he was with his friend who he always does drugs with. I checked the work rota and saw that he was rotaed in to work the next day and was extremely concerned that he was going to do drugs and then operate rides less than 24 hours later. I was worried for the health and safety of any potential customers and it would've killed me if anyone got hurt and I knew about it but didn't say anything. I also was worried in general for Isaac as he may get into major trouble if it was found out later down the line he was under the influence during a shift.
I texted my friend who is his team leader (basically she's his boss) and told her I think she should drug test him the next day. Today, she drug tested him and it came back positive and he's been suspended for 2 weeks with no pay.
When I got home from work and found out what had happened I immediately offered my condolences to Isaac and came clean that I was the one who reported him before anyone else told him (gossip tends to spread like wildfire at our workplace). I explained that I didn't feel comfortable standing by whilst he could potentially endanger customers and also said I was worried about his drug use because it was becoming more and more frequent recently. He told me that he thought he could trust me and immediately unadded me on Snapchat. He said that I should've come to him first and asked before turning him in and that I betrayed his trust when I was one of the only people he fully trusted.
I've told some of my friends about it and they all agreed that I did the right thing but I feel incredibly guilty about it.
AITA?

2023.04.01 23:02 Nimphaea I (F24) am debating on breaking off my engagement (M24)
So to give some backstory we started dating at 18 and my family was toxic, so I moved out at 20 and we bought our house because I was living in my friend’s dining room.
After a while it got old, and we decided buying a house would be better than renting in the long run. We started looking for a house and before we bought the house he proposed because he didn't want to be living together unless we were engaged. When we bought the house everything came out of my savings from working two jobs, aside from the home inspection. Before I moved out he had a rental garage for his business.
Once we were all moved in I took up paying the bills because he just couldn't keep up with them and would always pay them late if at all. He still had his garage which he always took priority over even without a rental contract or credit check(cash rental.) He worked a full time job and worked at his business after hours. He made good money, about 6 dollars more an hour than me, not including his business. I got paid 12-14 an hour and took care of most of the house bills, phone bills, and any other expenses I made . He took care of car insurance, his garage, and any expenses he had on credit with the exception of 2 bills each between 20-50 dollars. I also did all of the chores since he was always too busy.
Since he was never home I got petty and decided to get a second job since I needed to build back my savings again anyway. I worked that second job for about a year and a half until I got a new main job that put me on night shift. After being on night shift for about 5 months I switched to day shift.
During the night shift I noticed my credit score dropping because a card my name was on was overdue. I asked him about it and he said he didn’t know why, because that card was paid up. After investigating I found out that while I was on night shift he had racked up over 10,000 dollars worth of debt. I was furious he didn’t tell me he was struggling since we were supposed to be partners and his name is on the house as well. After talking with him we decided to take out my 401k and use my income tax to pay a lot of it off. We also agreed to go over finances monthly just to make sure we were staying on top of things.
During all this time, double jobs, night shift, I continued to take care of all the chores and most of the bills. I wrecked my car and used my savings to fix it up and pay off the insurance company. He eventually got rid of his garage and he now pays the electric bill because he works out of our garage.
He quit his day job, despite me asking him to wait and now he is gone all day and night like before. He has started to help out with chores but now he owes almost but not quite 10,000 to various places again. He keeps buying project cars, being financially irresponsible, when he does chores I either need to redo it or finish doing them anyway. He doesn't take care of himself. I have asked him to go to the doctors for various reasons and get his oral health under control but he is more worried about making money than anything else. When he comes home he is lovable and I just don't want to be touched after worrying about everything regarding him, the house and our livelihood on top of chores, work, and i'm in college. I feel like I just keep waiting for him to grow up or be financially stable enough to not potentially ruin us. I'm sick and I'm tired but I don't want to hurt him.

2023.04.01 23:02 Prestigious_You_3009 Evicted for Paying rent with a bank draft
I have footage of the entire scene. I called the OPP non-emergencies line, the officer called me back and stonewalled me, saying I'll be charged with trespassing. He wanted to know were I got my legal knowledge from, and would not hear me at all. He said I have to be out within the hour, else be charged with trespassing.
A renter in Ontario who shares common areas with other roommates can be considered a tenant if they meet the criteria set out in the Residential Tenancies Act (RTA). The RTA defines a tenant as someone who has the right to occupy a rental unit as their primary residence and pays rent to a landlord. The fact that a tenant shares common areas with other occupants does not automatically make them a lodger, as long as the tenant has the exclusive right to occupy their individual rental space.
I received no notice, the landlord doesn't live with us. I have 3 roommates, all of whom are routinly yelled at and harassed. Now, I'm told I must leave today (pack up the things in my
exclusive space, and according to a officer who didn't know I fall under the Residential Tenancies Act, NOT the Innkeepers act.
Under the Residential Tenancies Act (RTA), a "lodger" is defined as someone who rents a room in a dwelling where the owner or landlord lives and shares common spaces with the tenant. The RTA does not apply to lodger arrangements, and lodgers typically have fewer legal rights and protections than traditional tenants.
In contrast, the term "boarder" is not specifically defined in the RTA, but it is generally used to refer to someone who rents a room and may share common spaces with the landlord or other tenants, but the landlord does not live in the dwelling. Boarders are typically considered tenants under the RTA, and they have the same legal rights and protections as other tenants, including the right to a written tenancy agreement, the right to a rent receipt, and the right to be free from illegal rent increases and evictions.
To determine whether a renter is a tenant or a lodger, the criteria outlined in the RTA, such as the degree of exclusivity, the amount of rent paid, the length of stay, and the existence of a written agreement, will be considered. If the renter has the exclusive right to occupy their individual rental space, pays a significant portion of the landlord's income or the fair market value of the rental unit, has a longer period of stay, and has a written agreement with the landlord, they are more likely to be considered a tenant rather than a lodger.
What can I do when the police don't know the law?

2023.04.01 23:00 Physical_Building_91 Update: Lodger refuses to leave and has produced a fake rental contract.
Update from this thread:
https://www.reddit.com/LegalAdviceUK/comments/11usy2c/lodger_refuses_to_leave_they_have_produced_a_fake/
Can't log into my previous account, but wanted to give an update.
I took the advice from
LegalAdvice and attempted to do the following:
"In this order. - Police report and pull together what information you have and give the police the date and time you will be having this Individual leave.
- Immediate notice is reasonable in this scenario you do not need six weeks more.
- Give the updated notice in writing for him to immediately quit the property and have a witness present when you deliver it. I would truly recommend having a few family or friends there as witnesses not just one person. Whilst his items are being removed also ensure everybody remains with you. If he refuses the notice and/or threatens you (as you will have witnesses, make sure one of them has their phone recording throughout if they can safely do so) call the police.
- Pre-arrange for the date a lock smith to come whilst your witnesses are there and do a full lock change so you can bolt the door once he has gone.
- You may wish to pop in some nest or similar cameras on the entrance etc in addition.
- You may also want a family member to stay a few nights afterwards just so you aren’t alone if he comes back."
I went to the police station on the evening of my first post. I explained what was going on - that I had a lodger who was refusing to leave, and pretending that he was an actual tenant.
Police agreed to return with me that evening for the eviction, but I had to wait close to 4 hours in the station. Whenever the officers arrived at my house the lodger opened the front door and spoke with the officers. He presented them with the fake contract, stating that he was renting this place, that I was the landlord, and that I was attempting an illegal eviction.
At this point the police informed me that they didn't have enough evidence to make a decision on what amounted to a civil matter. I tried to enter my property, the lodger stopped me and said I was trespassing as a landlord legally has to give 24 hours notice if they wish to enter.
The police sided with the lodger and informed me I would have to find alternative accommodation.
I ended up having to stay in a dog-friendly BnB for a full week while I spoke with my homeowners insurance and my bank. I also tried to escalate with the police, but they refused to get involved in a civil matter.
Upon returning to my property after a couple of days I discovered my keys no longer work, so it appears the lodger has changed the locks.
I'm now living for free with a friend from my church while my home insurance is working with a solicitor (and hopefully my bank) to apply more pressure to the police to take action against the lodger.
Not a happy situation at present, I'm afraid.

2023.04.01 23:00 AutoModerator [Share Course] Dan Koe – Digital Economics Masters Degree

That’s the power of these strategies if you stay consistent with your life’s work. submitted by AutoModerator to Agency_Navigator_Gadz [link] [comments] |

2023.04.01 23:00 UnionOfSexWorkers What has been YOUR experience and opinion of positions in the skilled trades? Unionized and not!
Anyone can comment!
I've also heard that people who pick up a job ay homedepot and gain some experience there have an advantage when i comes to th hiring process!
I've heard that unions make a difference but....do they really?
And finally taining positions, do they purposefully underpay you while you're still on probation right after being hired? I haven't had a position in the trades but I've found that the firat six months I was hired somewhere I had less freedoms to ask for less hours or for more pay. Is it the same over there?
Thanks.
