2023.06.06 00:54 Accelerator231 Something I realized upon rewatching Laputa the Castle in the Sky robot scene

I've been comparing this with Atlantis, and... I noticed 2 things.
You know, I never noticed but even as it blew apart an entire base around Sheeta, she tried to stop it by wrapping her arms around its head (brave girl!) It stopped and then.. raised an arm to her? Was it just moving and twitching, or was it trying to comfort her in some way, because it perceived that she was in great distress?
I always thought that the robots were mindless killing machines as a child, and the one setting up flowers and the garden was something that 'overcame its programming' due to it being in peace for so long. Maybe there was no programming to overcome. Maybe they were just perfectly capable of compassion, just that this particular robot was given an order to wipe out all possible threats to sheeta. Maybe if Sheeta hadn't screamed out the equivalent of an SOS and 'I'm under attack!', then the base wouldn't have caught fire.
The robot is capable of turning entire bunkers, fortified doors, stone and brick, into molten lava and/ or shattered rubble. It's basically a reusable, rapid fire artillery cannon with incredible rate of fire, range, accuracy, and no need for resupply.
And yet when the soldiers were running away, screaming, it just started shooting at them with oddly less destructive laser beams. Yes they were terrifying, but they only blew up man-sized bits of ground, and not instantly, you know, with the impact of an artillery shell; it could definitely have done much worse. Did the Laputians install in rules-of-engagement into their automatons? Sorta like 'don't use maximum force against fleeing enemy troops' thing?

2023.06.05 22:58 b_pepper Gut Check - Do I not have a right to know when BF escalates a new relationship?

I am here for some non local, mostly anonymous advice. I have been having some communication issues with one of my partners and I am coming here for a gut check. This will be a lot of information as I tend to word vomit when I am impacted so thank you in advance to anyone that sticks with it and provides advice.
Background:
I (46F) have been dating boyfriend (43M) since September last year. Within a few months of us starting to date one of his partners, who was a friend of mine (I will call her J), overheard me refer to Boyfriend as an "almost partner, we just have not discussed making it official" with someone else at a local Polyam event and she kinda flipped out. It became apparent to me that J felt she had not been informed that boyfriend was escalating his friendship with me to a different level. I almost immediately put in a boundary with J that we should not discuss our hinge for the safety of our friendship. J agreed and thankfully held that boundary (I have had past metas who didn't).
FF a month or so and boyfriend decided to send a copy and paste mass message to all of his partners expressing that he felt he had to break up with all of us and stop Polyam due to his lack of communication skills... now up to this point, I had not perceived any communication issues so I met with him and we discussed how sending mass copy/paste messages was not fair to us (his partners) but that I wanted to stay together and maybe just take things a bit slowly. I think it is important to note that he did this in reaction to J blowing up his phone all day while he was at his daughter's BDay party. Since he was the one feeling he had some communication and transparency issues, I felt I was very clear that I would like to know when he felt that his feelings were more than friendship feelings for people if he understood that was happening and that I knew to ask that may be a difficult for him to achieve... but my bottom line was that I felt I needed to know when he had officially escalated a relationship or added to his sexual partners (I do not need names, just that it has occurred and that there was a discussion about sexual safety and testing frequency).
You see, I have a history with partners withholding information about connections and escalations, AND I have a history of being blindsided when "new metas" reach out to connect or post their happiness over a new relationship with a partner on social media. I thought I was clear about my needs, my insecurities and the roots of where those needs came from. He agreed to discussions with me if he had any new blooming relationships so I would not be blindsided.
About a month later, one of my closest friends (will refer to her as L) starts talking about Boyfriend and how they are going on dates (I mean why not tell one of your closest friends about your new happiness). I knew that they were friends, and had attended some of L's gatherings when BF was there... it did not seem to me to be more than friendship and honestly that does not bother me at all that they decided to date (other than personal insecurities left over from a past meta bestie debacle which I am dealing with and did not share). What bothered me is that I had to hear it from my friend and not my partner. The very next time we had a date night, I brought up L and what she said and he admitted that he had escalated that relationship but that he was hoping to tell me in person (I still do not know the exact timing of the escalation as I did not feel that was my business but now it is echoing in my neurotic brain). I reiterated that I needed to know when he escalated so I was not blindsided, that every time I am blindsided by hearing my Polyam Constellation is changing but he is not the one to tell me it impacts my trust in him and that next time please just shoot me a message stating there was a dynamic change. I reiterated that I needed to know when him and L escalated to a sexual relationship (as I need to know when he adds anyone new or has a group play activity that could impact my sexual safety). Also at this time, I asked him if there was anyone else that he was chatting at with an intent to escalate and he kinda brushed it off as yes there were other people reaching out... he called it "spring fever". He said he was not interested in growing any other relationships at this time because he was just so busy and was having difficulty maintaining friendships as it was. He did bring up that he was chatting with another friend of mine (we will call her H) but that he was just supporting her through a difficult time (something I knew and was also supporting her through) but that he was not interested in anything more.
THEN I was over at L's place to hang out and when we were just chilling in the back yard, she nonchalantly mentions sex with our hinge and how her NP is finding this connection more difficult than her other connections. I was shocked but I kept my cool... I tried to support her the best I could with her NP insecurity issue, I reiterated my boundary about us not discussing our hinge and sucked it up. Luckily, I had a set date night with boyfriend that night. I brought it up about 2 hours into the evening (again trying to give him the chance to just express himself first) and he firstly went "dam, I told her to wait until I had a chance to tell you" and followed it up with a confirmation that they were having sex and asked how I found out... but honestly, does it matter how I found out? I found out... It is not like I am a huge gossip or anything, I am an extreme extrovert and I like to maintain connections with a lot of people... and I mean if you are going to take a stab at my best friend, you have to kinda expect that there would be information transfer by osmosis don't you think? Like I do not think L was being malicious, it was part of a greater conversation and when I brought up the boundary she apologised and has not talked about their relationship to me since...
FF to last week when I get a string of messages from H (remember that friend from a few weeks ago that he didn't want to grow a relationship with), after she had not really been interacting with me for a while, about how one of her partners had broken up with her but the sting was not so bad since there was a new connection she was growing... for about 20 minutes she was pretty vague about it and then BOOM... dropped Boyfriend's name and of course I felt blindsided. I messaged Boyfriend and asked for a Vid Chat. When he picked up I asked simply... "So, what is going on between you and H?" to which he replied that he had only reached out to her that morning for a face to face coffee and he was planning on having a discussion with her about expectations for the relationship and how he did not want to be a rebound and was not in a place to escalate... at least that is what he told me... or led me to believe (my neurotic brain now tells me that maybe I did not hear him or understand him correctly).
The next day, Boyfriend had a death in the family. I spend Friday night with him and my Nesting Partner (NP) having taken over some quick bake food and tequila and then again NP and I went over on Sunday morning with coffee and breakfast for him and his kids... He left this morning for a week long trip "Back home" and we texted pretty much all afternoon/evening yesterday and into the morning this morning... ample opportunity to tell me he had met with H and they had decided to make it official. How I found out they made it official was when H made a comment in the "Happy Monday" post of one of my local Polyam groups that stated she had a new partner as of Sunday afternoon coffee and I felt like someone punched me in the gut.
I mean I do not care if he dates new people, he had 3 partners when I met him... he can date the whole community for all I care as long as he is continuing to garden and show up for our relationship the way that I need and he has agreed to. But I am just not sure if I can function within this relationship if I just can't trust that he will be transparent with me. I know I am hurt and that I should not make any rash decisions so I came here for some support and a gut check.
What I really want to know:
Do I have a right to know when my partners are developing more than friendship feelings with other people so that I can do the personal prep for the change in dynamic and deal with my internal insecurity scripting? My other partners always chat with me when they are having "gooshy feelings" for others... I think mostly because I tend to over communicate my feelings about people too, I try to be a good wing person for my loves, and I have sometimes asked specifically for this and they have agreed.
Do I have a right to know, from my partners, when a relationship has escalated?
How much leeway should I give my partners to tell me before I "have a right to be" upset that I heard it from someone else??? Like should I just caulk this all up to bad timing (3 times in a row) and accept that because I am friendly and connected to so many people in the community that I am just going to have to deal with finding out about changes in my Polyam constellation from other people?
How am I supposed to deal with the insecurity that I feel as a result of the lack of transparency so far? Like I am coming here for a bit of a gut check and I am hoping that will help to quiet the small battle being waged with my brain and heart right now.
Like when I say I have had this happen a lot, I mean it, even in the Polyam side of things... and I am starting to think that my expectations for my partners may be just too high! Lack of transparency is something that is really triggering to me due to withholding and lying from people who said they loved me before as well as abuse and inconsistent and string free affection from adults in my childhood. I know I require a little more communication than some and I was up front with boyfriend about this and the whys within the first 3 dates and he agreed that this would be not an issue and to be as transparent as possible.
I have part of me telling me to de-escalate back to friendship as this level of anxiety over a relationship is not healthy and that it is OK if he is just not capable of meeting my romantic needs... but I have another part of me telling me I am being too much and too needy and I should just suck this up and stop talking to him about it.
polyamory please help me because I don't want to talk to my best friend and now meta and I do not feel this is fair to drop on my other partners.

2023.06.05 22:19 DEEEPFREEZE Question about ricochet

The other day I went shooting in the desert. We were shooting hanging steel targets with handguns at probably around 10-15 yards. We were shooting a touch uphill and behind the targets were your garden variety sand/dirt and some rocks. It was essentially a natural "lane" as it also had sort of hills on either side of it as well.
I was watching my buddy shoot next to him when I felt the sting of an impact on my leg. It wasn't too bad, felt like maybe a little less than an airsoft pellet. My first thought was maybe I got grazed by a ricochet at just the right angle because sometimes you'd hear the odd one if we missed a target but I figured with the physics of it it'd be near impossible for something like a bullet to come even close to back the direction it was fired from. But I'm also sure it wasn't a spent casing on its way out because my friend was shooting on my right side.
So my question is, what are the odds that it was a ricochet? I know plenty of responsible people who go shooting in the desert and have made no mention of being particularly careful about the spot you choose. But I'm feeling incredibly stupid talking about our target setup after explaining it and am wondering if I got really lucky. Hoping that I and maybe others can learn from asking.

2023.06.05 21:32 SaturdayInSuburbia A few fragments from my short story. Looking for general feedback/impressions

His dad read in a magazine that the greenest lawns need to be watered first thing and so the sprinklers were programmed to come on very early. Carl woke to their patter and to the smell of wet grass and May blossom. Looking down, a slice of dawn light crossed the middle of the bed and he watched as strands of dust drifted through it, their spiralling, jerky motions briefly visible before they vanished into the airy space of the room on either side. At some point, he drifted back to sleep.

In the houses around him, forty or so others lay in their beds, dreaming dreams which, if you could have seen them, would have blended into a heady mix of hope and fear that hovered just above the various Groves, Avenues and Closes that made up Sunningdale. The cloud was as real, somehow, as the birdsong flitting between the trees and the mist creeping back down the streets to the sea. Within it, promises of new lives and new lovers blended with unseen foes and inexorable catastrophes. Some confronted deeply hidden parts of themselves, manifest as dead relatives, impossible landscapes, bizarre tasks and strange entities with shifting identities. Others dreamt of nothing at all, and contributed only black streaks to the otherwise iridescent, billowing cloud.

For his part, Carl was dreaming he was ten years younger, learning to ride his bike. His mum was running behind him holding on to the back of the seat, giving him time to find his balance while his legs built up enough momentum to keep him upright. Then he was doing it – he was riding and it was exhilarating: a blur of light and colour and rushing air. And then, all of a sudden, he wasn’t. He was awake.

“Morning, dingus,” came a voice with a hint of amusement. Carl blinked his eyes open and stared at the boy outside the window. His hair swirled and danced in the breeze, seemingly possessing a life of its own. The boy smiled with his eyes and nodded toward a corner of the room. Carl followed the nod and saw a cricket ball sitting against the skirting board. “Lucky your window was open. Pass it back?” Carl looked again at the boy, still half asleep. The boy began to roll his hands with mock impatience: “You deaf or something?”

Cautiously – without a word – Carl pushed off the duvet, swung his legs over the side of the bed and dropped his feet to the carpet. He went to the corner, picked up the ball and walked it back to the window. He held it out and saw the black squiggles curving around its surface. “Who signed it?”, Carl asked. The boy didn’t answer. Instead, he grabbed the ball and ran across the lawn, disappearing into the hedges at the bottom of the garden. Carl stayed at the window for a moment. As he stood, cool, salty air flowed past him into the room. The sprinklers pattered away.

-----------------------------------

The houses stood in a row like colourful blocks. Behind them, a warren of overgrown bowers and hedgerows linked the gardens to each other; in front of them, the sweeping asphalt connected each to the next, then to the clusters close by, then to the town, to the city and eventually to the whole, wild, open country beyond. It was in the eddies at the very end of a minor rivulet of this enormous network the Mrs Friedman now stood. She began to move, eyeing each house closely as she passed by.

The older she got, the more her tight face struggled to conceal the mass of jealousies, slights and conflicts amassed behind it. And so, some of that bile would occasionally overflow back into the world, escaping her thin lips as a pointed whisper or, sometimes, even a direct attack – which is what happened next.

“Have you eyes?” Her frail voice floated down the drive, weakening with every inch travelled. It was almost imperceptible by the time it reached Mr Fuller’s ears. It was, however, just enough to make him stand up and turn around. Seeing her, he smiled and began walking toward her, wiping his palm on a rag and setting up to shake hands.

“Hi there and good morning”, he said, “I’m Paul Fuller – new to the neighbourhood and it’s very nice to meet you.”

She stared at his outstretched hand and remained perfectly still, her white knuckles wrapped around the Zimmer frame. The man’s pleasant demeanour confounded her – as had his claim that he was new to the area (that the house had been for sale was news to her). But, after a moment’s stasis, she managed to brush all this away and gesture weakly toward the drive. She asked again, “have you eyes?”

“Excuse me, madam?”, Paul replied.

“Your weeds”, she said, raising her eyebrows to indicate the displeasure she felt at having to repeat herself.

Paul scratched the back of his head and looked at the little green shoots that were just starting to peep through the cracks in the paving stones.

“I’m almost waist deep in them.”

“Oh. We’ve just moved in.” Paul said defensively. “In fact, we’re actually still moving in”. He pointed to the delivery van parked on the drive. “But, well – I’ll get the weeds cleaned up just as soon as I can, madam.”

“Good”, she said, resuming her slow shuffle down the street.

-----------------------------------

Mrs Alleman’s hands burned pink in the washing up bowl. She’d read somewhere that, for every additional degree she could tolerate, another species of germ would be eliminated. Since then, increasing the temperature of the water had become something of a challenge. She enjoyed the sharp tingle she felt as she pushed it up a little more each day, and she believed she was now approaching what was possible for a human hand to endure. Her vindication came on the rare occasions when her husband or a friend got splashed dropping in a bowl or plate, or when they tried to fish out a piece of cutlery or a utensil, and jumped back in utter shock. “The hotter it is, the cleaner it is”, she’d sing, voicing the mantra that so often cycled in her mind.

Through the steam and the droplets running down the glass, she could just about see her husband talking to their new neighbour – or rather, the neighbour was talking to him. Even from across the road, her husband’s discomfort was apparent, revealing itself in his demure, slouching gait and the way he kept glancing back at the house as though worried it would vanish and leave him stranded on this earnest stranger’s lawn. Left to his own devices, she knew, it would have taken him weeks or months to introduce himself – and, even then, it would only have happened thanks to some chance encounter at the grocery store or in the park, or in some other communal space, and only if initiated by the other party.

Even now, his awkwardness endeared her – as it always had done. Though, something about her husband’s vacant face as he stared over this stranger’s shoulder, elicited something else – something that was getting a little more familiar these days: a smidge of annoyance, perhaps. She pushed it away, reminding herself of all the things he did for her and for their family. She sighed, pulled her hands from the blistering water and dried them off.

“Hi there”, she shouted as she crossed the road, waving with one hand and using the other to shield her eyes. “Welcome to Sunningdale. We’re so glad to see someone finally move in to this beautiful house. Mr and Mrs Cartwright only put in on the market on account of her mother’s – his mother in-law’s – health, bless her, which took a real turn last year. Cancer! I know. I mean, absolutely the last thing she needed. Her husband, Mrs Cartwright’s father – Mr Cartwright’s father-in-law – died last Christmas, sadly. Yes, on Christmas day itself, which they say is a very common day to die. I’m not sure why. Something to do with being surrounded with family? Maybe. Who knows? Anyway, the only reason they moved is to be closer to her in what will most probably be her final year. They were completed devastated to lose the house, of course – their home for over twenty years. But they needed to downsize, anyway. Two birds and all that. You won’t believe it, but I actually remember seeing him carry her over the threshold. And haven’t they kept it lovely? I suppose that’s one of the reasons you bought it – gosh, yes, they really did keep it lovely, didn’t they? And is there a Mrs…”

“Fuller”, Paul answered, “And no, sadly there’s not. There used to be. But she died – three years ago. Not on Christmas day. But of cancer. Absolutely the last thing we needed.”

Mrs Alleman’s face dropped. “Oh, gosh – I’m so sorry. How cack-handed of me.”

With a smile, Paul revealed the ease with which he could talk about his wife’s death, which was a relief to the Alleman’s in that moment, but which would cause both of them some disquiet as they lay in their beds that night

2023.06.05 21:30 Throwra32121 Am I insecure for ghosting a friend?(25F)(30F)

Am I a bad friend for ghosting my friend? So I’m 25 years old, and my friend is 30, and recently she broke up with her boyfriend, and we went out sometimes before this. I had known her for five years and had only seen her through like a mutual friend, and we would usually hang out at her apartment. We wouldn’t go out as much, and I wouldn’t talk about like guys talking to me at school and stuff because I was hung up on my ex for a while, and I would reject any guy who would ask me out, but I would never bring it up to my friends cause I think it’s like cringe you to brag about the attention you get all the time.
This friend can be a little self-absorbed, but at first, I didn’t think it was as big of a problem, you know, like the type of friend who always wants a photo shoot of themselves or the one who always brings conversations back to themselves or constantly making us at least 30 minutes late to most things I’m not perfect either so I thought these were things I could overlook. Well, when we started going out and I would talk to Guy, she would like to make a stink face or look visibly upset.
One time I had recently started dating someone, and the week before, I had played wing woman for her and helped her get her cell phone that she accidentally left in an Uber, so this time, I thought I could leave early to hang out with this guy. I felt terrible leaving my friend early at the bar to hang out with this guy, but I gave her Uber money to go home. She sent me all these messages calling me like a b*tch and an awful friend and stuff like that. then on a different occasion was telling my friend that I was a slt and sleeping with like multiple guys just cause I hung out with that one guy the one time.
I still hung out with her after that and forgave her, but then, on my birthday, she begged to go on a trip to San Diego even though I didn’t want to go that bad and wanted to go to Victoria to see one of our mutual friends, but she shot that down. On the trip, she got drunk and started calling me stupid and started calling me names constantly because like a guy smiled at me and the entire trip called me stupid.
I’ve had a stressful year as a nurse assistant, and my hospital overworked me. And also, I’m going back to school at UCLA. So I’ve just been overwhelmed. She also knows that this stuff is going on in my life but still piles on by calling me stupid. I’ve ghosted her like she’s messaged me the last two months asking,” Hey, what’s up” or “Hi, how are you doing, friend,” but I’ve ignored all of her messages. I feel immature about not confronting her, but I’m scared she’ll be more verbally abusive because she screamed at me on my birthday. Now she’s telling mutual friends she ended the friendship CAUSE IM'm INSECURE.
I feel lousy ghosting this friend because I’ve known them for five years, but I can’t take any more verbal abuse in my life. Am I the asshole for for ghosting my friend and insulting me multiple times?
TL; Dr: friend screamed at me on my birthday and I ghosted her now she’s telling people I’m inscure.

2023.06.05 21:30 AtomicScript Hiw do I write this dialogue?

I've gotten to a section of my story where my protagonists has entered a shanty town where the "police" are after him (my book is post-apocalyptic).
My character has gotten into a standoff where he is backed into a corner and the police are demanding he surrender, and my protagonist replys:
"You're not taking me alive. You and I both know that. I ain't in no mood to be swinging infornt of New Victoria on a light-poll any time soon. Just quit shooting and go home, I don't wanna kill you folks."
And this dialogue to me just feels choppy and like something out of iamverybadass. My protagonist is an outlaw and a criminal, but I want him to be somewhat realistic, but this dialogue to me just sounds like something a 14 year old would imagine themselves saying in their fantasy.
Any help? Thx

2023.06.05 20:09 Archives-H I work for a company that studies cursed places. There's a place they call the House of Tongues.

So it all started with a box of bees. It was deep within the stores of the Company, in the depths where only the bravest dare enter. Well, that, and literally about everyone with a basic Level One access code.
And in the depths one could find a box of bees, all dead and devoid of any color. Bees that had once nested in the suburbs of North Carolina, in an odd house that had always stood there.
They called it the House of Tongues.
My name is Canopy Hydrangea. I recover cursed artifacts, explore haunted places, and report back the information needed to the people I work for. The Company then arranged what has to be done to remove these blemishes from the world.
If it isn’t possible, we make sure the evil of cursed artifacts and bizarre places doesn’t make its way to the general public.
But sometimes, it’s important to leak a report or two to the unsuspecting public. Makes for a good warning- and this particular file is one of many that must be known.
“So, team,” I began, as we sat around an old fireplace, in the bakery-turned cover for our base of operations, “what has the Company found us today?”
Rainie, my key assistant, tuned up the old projector and pressed a few buttons. Kyran faked a yawn, and my scrollkeeper, Cypress, laughed.
We all stopped laughing when the image of a dead dog, bloodied and covered in long, piercing slashes emerged. “So let’s talk about the House of Tongues,” Rainie began, changing the slide to an image of a remodeled, but still old looking house. “This house was built back in the 1620s, and…”
I’ll cut Rainie’s exposition by a lot here. Many unnecessary details, but details that kept us intrigued and interested.
The house, built in 1627, was built by a migrating priest and his family. Initially, it was supposed to be a small cabin, a little summer place for rest and meditation. This all changed when, according to local mythology, the priest was offered a deal by an odd man in white and black.
He called himself the Night Merchant, and the priest gave up his cabin, and within seven days and seven nights a grand, expansive house replaced it.
The licking began to take place nearly a year after that. Not much is known from the priest’s records- as Rainie tells it, “his words were deemed heresy and burned.”
But we do know that the house, named Attager Place changed hands over the centuries, though most records were lost to time. The more important records come after the end of the Great War.
  1. A family, the Bakers, moves into Attager Place, now remodeled to fit it with a little town that popped up from the economic boom.
  2. William Baker’s ‘youngest’ daughter reports a sensation at night, a strange rough feeling, as if she were being ‘licked by a cat’. Cats do not approach Attager Place- in fact, the house does not seem to welcome all but human life.
Cats who approach it go mad and disappear. The family dog Baker brings along is found on the street, eviscerated by long, piercing slashings the police could never explain.
Three months later the sightings begin.
William Baker goes out one day to investigate mewling noises behind the house. The entire backyard is trashed: pots have gone flying, dirt has been dug- the entire garden has been uprooted.
Darting around the corner are monsters. Small, slender things, an ashen white with bodies as thin as sticks; their bones show, the muscles pulse.
But strangest of all are their heads, large and muscular, adorned with small horns that dot it, and two eyes he states as ‘deep blue like the sea’. Terrified and confused, William goes back to the house to fetch a rifle.
When he goes back, though, they’ve vanished.
The noises continue for the rest of the year- but always gone before he can take a good, clear look. But something else, far more chilling and incredible has appeared- one of his two daughters have vanished.
Both Company and government records show that the Bakers only had one daughter. And yet, in the cold winter of 1928 William Baker finds himself mad, shocked as he begins to remember a daughter that never existed.
An older daughter, he remembers. But try as he might, he can’t picture her face- nor find any certificates, legal evidence she had existed.
But in the halls of the house she does. There’s a bedroom with things that aren’t supposed to be there. A bed, posters, and books- all evidence a teenage girl had once lived there.
But on paper, she does not exist. And neither does she exist in the minds of anyone else. His wife and ‘only’ daughter do not acknowledge the extra room. His neighbors seem to avoid him.
  1. At night, they come. They appear as shadows in the windows, peering in with small hands, large, blue eyes. And then they open a circular, razorlike mouth and a long tongue with teeth emerges, licking the window and gently cracking it.
William takes his rifle and journeys outside.
The creatures seem to taunt him, gracefully avoiding his gunshots, leading him deeper and deeper into the woods that were not there when he bought the place. When he realizes, all too late, that his fences have ceased to exist- it’s too late.
The creatures are gone. And behind him, in the large house called Attager Place, there are screams.
When William Baker finally finds the house again, everything is silent. His wife and child are gone. The creatures sit cross legged and wait, tongues eerily lolling out. He shoots them but the bullets always seem to miss.
By dusk, they are gone.
Legally, William Baker's wife and two kids do not exist. He spent the rest of his life telling the same tale in a mental asylum. He also claimed the creatures followed him there, always peeking in through the bars and windows.
He is found near death one day, bizarre lacerations and slashings. A man comes by, wrapped in shadow and gives him a buzzing box.
Bees. And the creatures never appeared-
“Wait,” Kyran cut in, “you’re saying that bees, of all things stopped these… tongue aliens?”
Rainie nodded, almost in disbelief of the story herself. “Whoever gave him those bees knew how to deal with them,” she continued. “However it works- it worked. William got out the asylum and lived the rest of his life as a-”
“A beekeeper!” Cypress guess. Rainie nodded. “So if this case is closed, why has the Company handed it over to us?”
Rainie sighed in disappointment. “As I was saying,” she remarked, teeth clenched, “the bees have failed.” A slide displayed thousands of dead bees, around the house. “In 1937 two Company Agents bought the house and bombarded the place with beehives. Beehives that have remained ever since, cared for by a gardener.” She paused and switched it over to another angle. “Last week, the gardener vanished, only remembered by a single surviving Company agent. Any guesses as to what they want us to do?”
I nodded and gleefully raised my hand. “They want us to clean it up. The bees, and the uh,” I tried to think of the name, “Tongue Aliens. Tonliens, if you will.” That generated some laughter. “Cypress, Kyran, you two are my containment experts-”
Cypress revealed a drawing on an iPad- “Already working on a spell.”
Kyran shrugged. “The new Ironsalt Guns are ready.”
I looked at Rainie in anticipation, wondering if there was more. “That’s about it- there’s a similar story that happened in 1932, but same old, same old.” She paused, thinking. “We should also watch for artifact hunters- sources suggest Lorreno’s crew may be looking to seize one of the uh, aliens for themselves.”
I practically growled- Lorreno and his crew were a gang of villains that dabbled in selling cursed artifacts and cryptids to shady dealers. “Cryptid smuggling?”
Rainie nodded. Cypress noted this as well. “If they show, boss, we’ll take them out this time.”
By the next hour we’d prepared all we’d needed. We stood by a large, symbol adorned mirror and waited. Cypress chanted some ancient, long forgotten poetry, and the mirror changed to a quiet street.
Rainie stepped through, then Cypress, Kyran, and me, and then we were face to face with Attager Place.
I felt a sense of great discomfort. “Do you-” I muffled my ears, suddenly starting to hurt, “head that?!”
It was the sound of bees, buzzing all at once in a cursed, malevolent death knell. I screamed in pain and fell to the floor. Cypress caught me as I fell and read off of their phone. “Infected beast of… unholy…” I drifted in and out as the ghost swarm dazed me, “begone!”
And it was over, and my vision cleared. “The house is… powerful,” I murmured. “I don’t think we’re just dealing with the tongue things,” I stammered, still dizzy. “There’s,” I reached into the ether, “more than one entity.”
Kyran looked a bit worried. “Should we call for backup?”
“Nah,” I replied. “We can take it.”
We entered the house, the buzzing still in the back of my mind. As told, a swarm of bees lay dead around the place, and with every step we took we a loud crunch emanated, echoing around the house.
Besides that, and the deep fear we were all beginning to feel, there was nothing. “All the events happened at night,” Rainie reminded. “And it is-”
drip-drop
Something red and thick fell onto my hand. It was blood. drip-drop. More began to fall from the ceiling, a river of blood pouring from cracks. It was cold and seemed to pulse in time, as if- alive.
Rainie wrote into a journal, then collected a sample. “Weird. It’s not a threat.”
Kyran nervously pointed his weapon around. “Well I don’t like it.”
“Well go on and Ironsalt it,” I told. “I don’t like it either.”
Kyran nodded, reached into his bag and found a sphere of white. We averted our eyes as he lit the fuse, tossing it up into the air and exploding in light, spraying us with salt and fine iron- enchanted so that it would not hurt us.
The ghost-blood stopped and fell to the ground, evaporating into ash. “One phenomena neutralized,” Rainie noted.
We continued onwards, until the house decided to shift itself, creaking, trying to spin its halls so that we would emerge back where we came from. We were at the kitchen- then it would creak, and the door we opened-
“Back up front,” I murmured.
“I’ll handle it,” Cypress offered, already beginning to chant. The place let out a sigh, and things were restored. “It won’t hold, though.”
And then they finally appeared. Little deformed things.
Pale bodies, large heads, large, bulbous eyes. They appeared in the corner of my eye at first, though as we ventured deeper into the house they seemed to dart here and there.
Kyran attempted to shoot them, but they seemed ever-evading, always just out of reach. Rainie noted them and sketched the beings. And as we got deeper the sound of the dead bees began to crescendo.
And other noises. The sound of screams, of pleas for help. The house seemed to go on forever, unfolding, each layer of the house seemingly older and more arcane from the last.
In front, it had seemed like a remodeled house. Inside, it was at least thirty years old, and in each subsequent hall, room it got older and older. In the distance we saw something dark and rocky.
“That’s a cave, isn’t it?” I asked.
Cypress’ magic was of no use either. “Wait,” they paused, as we reached the cave. The shadows flickered within, and the creatures seemed to whisper in the darkness. He spun around and gasped. “I think we’ve been tricked.”
I turned to see- a wall. A solid wall of paint and brick. “That wasn’t there the last time I-” I screamed as something lashed out, cutting me. “Agh!” A tongue drew into the darkness, sharp.
“Lights!” Rainie shouted, flicking on a lantern. The electric device sputtered, and failed- illuminating about a dozen tongue-things in the darkness, leaping out into shadow. “Damn it!”
Kyran began to fire aimlessly as more and more tongues darted in and out, slashing us. “Cypress, boss, solution?”
Cypress read off their phone, and a ball of light emerged in front of us, yet the darkness still remained. The wall behind us began to move, pushing us forward.
The magician yelped and tendrils of paint burst from the wall ensnaring him. “Help me!” I flicked a knife open and him loose.
We were being forced forwards. The wall behind us seemed ever fleshy now, tendrils of red dripping limbs reaching out at us. In front, tongues lashed out, cutting us up, one by one.
But we continued to push, running forwards and firing as the wall of flesh behind us forced us into the darkness.
“Look!” I shouted. “A building!”
There was something there. Ancient, and carved from stone. The ruins of an ancient temple that seemed just like the house. Statues of the tongue things lay in wait, eerily inviting us in.
The wall picked up speed, and we ran into the ruin, just as the wall crashed into it’s entrance, locking us within.
A flash- then black goo. “I got one!” Kyran cheered, stepping over and picking it up. It whined, still alive, and a tongue lashed out- only for Kyran to sever it. “They can be killed.”
Rainie was studying the walls of the temple- the death of the creature had scared them off- for now, at least. “This place is old. Like, really old- I’ve never seen this,” she gestured to the arcane symbols on the walls, “language before.”
Cypress knelt down next to two skeletons, little marks of teeth all over. “Must be the Bakers.”
Around us were more skeletons, all marked by small incisions. Most were ancient but some were all too new. A fresh corpse even lay in a corner, just a few days old.
I looked at it. I recognized the corpse as a black market artifact dealer. “Serves you right.”
“Company Agents-” Rainie gasped. A team, just like us lay dead on the floor, recently deceased. “I thought we were the first to come here in a long time?”
“This place,” I remembered, “eats people. Memories. HQ probably sent them and forgot they existed.”
A scuttling came from deeper within, and the sound of bees suddenly stopped. An unceasing quiet came next, and suddenly I preferred the bees to the quiet.
“I think,” Cypress announced, “I can get us out of here.” And then they reached into their backpack and brought out, of all things-
“Is that a cat?!” Rainie puzzled. “Did you actually-”
“I supposed it would come in handy,” Cypress confessed. “Plus, it isn’t mine, and I’ve got to return it.”
“Enough, guys,” I ordered. “Cypress, how does this work?”
A glint in their eye came now. “Well,” they began, “we know that the house hates animals, right?” we nodded. “Let’s see why.”
And with that, Cypress released the cat, and it trotted softly down a hall, deep into the temple. We followed, up until the cat stopped before a chamber, stone gates warding us off.
I opened the gates- and then we saw it.
This was some sort of congregation room, a grand hall filled with stone benches, ancient symbols of old religion, and- thousands of the creatures, all sleeping, save for a dozen or so chattering and climbing the walls.
“Look- there,” Cypress pointed to light in the corner of the hall, where creatures popped in and out. “Daylight.”
“A way out,” I murmured.
“Just have to get through all of this first,” Kryan pointed out.
“Not necessarily,” Cypress started, “I’ll be right back.”
Cypress returned a moment later with the corpse of the tongue-creature, then inscribed several symbols into it with a knife. They lit up, and we walked into the haldl, Cypress leading us forwards.
The creatures began to wake, jumping beside us and sniffing the air. “I’ve disguised us as a mass of them,” Cypress explained. “Let’s see how long this holds.”
The creatures ignored us, returning to hibernation. I observed the hall as we journeyed closer and closer to daylight. Statues of goat-like things watched us, tall and ancient, yet oddly familiar.
The creatures tended to the place, lighting candles and even managing a small garden towards the back. They did not construct the place- but whoever did left them to tend for it, to keep it sacred, safe.
“Oh no,” Cypress murmured. “The spell’s worn off.” That’s when the creatures began to shift, paying attention to us once again. Cypress gulped, found the cat and threw it. “Run!”
And so we did, towards daylight. The creatures lashed out at us, the cat seemed to distract them, pawing its way through the little beasts. “I need rope,” Cypress commanded, just as the light shone above us.
An opening seemed so far away. “Here!” I tossed it, and Cypress reached out and, with ancient art, floated it up.
“Climb!” I shouted, already beginning to do so. “Go!”
And as we climbed the creatures did so too, leaping from the walls to seize us. Kyran fired and Cypress did strange art. I slashed them away, and they fell to an ever growing pile below us.
Three were on the rope below us. “Take this!” Kyran slashed the rope, cutting them loose.
I rose into the light first, pressing open a grate and helping Cypress up. Rainie came next, then Kyran. I threw the rope over, and shut the grate back down. Still, they stuck to the walls, still chasing us.
I found an explosive, strapped it to the grate and ran. A boom came behind us, and no opening remained.
We were in the backyard. “I think,” I murmured, “I’m going to submit this place for immediate destruction.”
And that was that. The place had been surveyed, our job was done. We’d done all we could and found what we needed. We couldn’t stop them on our own. A request was made, and the last time I heard of the place, it had both been burned, collapsed, and creatures seized for further study.
Another day was done. Another bizarre placed kept under control. If you know a place marked by evil- let us handle it.

mass grave

2023.06.05 19:39 RohmanOnTwitch Streaming via mobile Alternatives?

Firstly, hi all and mods feel free to delete if this breaks rules.
So I am a streamer who occasionally does DIY/woodworking stuff in my garden and when I do I stream via the Twitch App on my phone and it's not ideal but it does the job and therefore have no complaints.
Recently, however, my streams have had my mic audio insanely quiet. There's not much in the way of settings so I can't trouble shoot and not sure how to resolve the issue.
So my question is: does anyone have alternatives and reccomendations for apps where I can stream via my mobile? Thanks!

2023.06.05 19:38 a_boring_dystopia ILPT Request: Need something that is invisible, untraceable, and smells like death.

I live next door to a pub that has started having live music outside since the weather turned nice. They have a temporary stage setup for the summer with speakers pointed almost directly at my house.
Music goes on till 1:30am sometimes, and despite a lot of soundproofing work I've done, the noise inside is unbearable - even with noise cancelling headphones on, I can still hear every word of every song - and that's in my bedroom with all the windows, blinds and curtains closed.
The owners of the pub are blank ignoring my complaints... So I want to make their outdoor area less attractive to their clients. A suspect smell of burst sewer that they can never actually track down would be ideal.
Bear in mind, this is right next to my house, so I want something that stinks for a few hours overnight, but where the smell will have faded by the next morning.
It's got to smell naturally horrific, not a chemical "stink bomb" type thing, and has to be something I can deploy covertly. I'm thinking a liquid in a super soaker that I can "accidentally" shoot over the wall when the beer garden is empty...
Any ideas what I can use?

2023.06.05 19:30 KamchatkasRevenge Out of Cruel Space Side Story: Of Dog, Volpir, and Man - Ch 222

Sir David
The tactical situation was, admittedly, not the best Sir David had ever found himself in. The three toughs, who Sir David had now labeled Miss Red, Miss Green, and Miss Blue, were spread out from right to left in that order, blocking the exit and Miss Blue had moved to cover the stairs up to the balcony and the rest of the war shrine somewhat. Miss Blue was looking a bit nervous, glancing around like she was expecting security forces to come down on their heads at any time.
No such luck so far as David could tell.
A quick tallying of his assets confirmed he had his revolver in an axiom holster on his thigh, his kukri war blade... and a civilian to protect against three Apuk gangers.
Normally he'd consider himself more than enough to deal with a number of random thugs, especially with a pistol in his hands. These thugs however were undoubtedly a bit more dangerous than your average thug, even for the Apuk. They had to be to take such a bold and open action in the Imperial district of the capital in broad daylight.
His eyes sweep across the three toughs who apparently had reinforcements coming and he wonders if there's any way to get the attention of the Wardens that kept this place. Surely a bunch of top quality old battle axes like them would be down to take out the trash on their own front lawn wouldn't they? Before he can push a little axiom into his vocal cords for a loud call for backup however, the tension is broken by the sharp click of heels on stone behind and above them on the balcony.
"Well now, who dares disturb the Empress's peace on this sacred ground?" says a voice from above.
"Beat it sister, there ain't none of your business here." Snarls back Miss Green, clearly not wanting her fun intruded on.
David half turns just a bit so he can get a good look behind him and watches out of the corner of his eye as an Apuk woman leaps down from the balcony, landing daintily. She was, he considered for half a second, gorgeous even by Apuk standards. Clad in the black duty uniform of the Apuk Imperial Marines, with leather boots up to her knees and a medley of decorations on her left breast, and some gems on her collar, she immediately gave the impression of an officer with a significant degree of authority.
Making a striking uniform look all the better was the woman wearing it. A caramel skinned, red headed goddess. The only thing marring her beauty was that she was missing her left eye, which was covered over with a black leather eye patch that made her one green eye that blazed like it was made of raw warfire all the more intense.
"Oh it's very much my business on this ground. This is an Imperial war shrine you little trollop. Did you not think there might be members of the Imperial military here to pay their respects? I had been planning to call the Wardens and have them arrest you, but I will not allow such disrespect to go by without giving you three the thrashings your mothers clearly should have when you girls."
Miss Red, who's hair was cut into an elaborate mohawk barks out a laugh that didn't quite have as much spirit in it all of the sudden.
"Oh yeah? You and what army?"
"Well considering that man is a human commando if I understand human facial features properly, and the young lady is an Agela... that's more than enough force to deal with trash like the three of you. There's only one rule."
The gang leader, Miss Green, laughs for real this time, seemingly feeling a bit more confident. "You invite yourself to a private bit of business and now you want to impose rules?"
"The rules of this sacred garden, yes. I do not need to impose or enforce them, they simply are. If you call war fire in this place, you will be punished, and not even the Empress herself will be able to save you from a painful death. You may consider this your one and only warning. I am far more merciful than the Garden itself. I only intend to tan your hides and turn you over to the police."
The Apuk woman strides up to join Ariane and Sir David, still as calm as if this was some sort of fashionable party. "Sir David I presume."
"...That's me, you're quite well informed, miss...?"
"Commander Miri'Tok, Imperial Marine Corps Commando Squadron 2, I'm your opposite number, I was actually intending to go back to my desk and send you a message inviting your unit to do a little cross training with us when you were finished with your shore leave but if you just have to drop into my hands than I'm not opposed to inviting you in person."
"Sounds like a lovely time Commander, but we do have business to attend to."
Miri'Tok nods. "Yes, but introductions are important. If you are indeed Sir David, that would make you Miss Ariane Mi..."
"It's Mrs. Ariane Forsythe now actually." Ariane cuts the other woman off, and uses the opportunity to smack the controls of her shifter belt, growing to her impressive full height.
"Oh, congratulations. We had been intending to invite you as Sir David's plus one to a social event we're planning, I'll make sure the invitations are updated."
"You really do have remarkably good intelligence agents Commander." Sir David notes, impressed, and more than a bit annoyed at this apparent security breach including Ariane... Who had taken on her new title and his surname rather aggressively, but Sir David wasn't about to argue that particular point.
"This doesn't count as intelligence, we simply asked for a list of relevant personnel for a formal event from your commanding officer's office, of senior staff and their friends and family... Sergeant Major Gurung from your unit put together the list for the Commandos aboard your ship I believe."
"Meddling old hen." David mutters under his breath before address Miri'Tok more clearly. "So, all introduced, shall we get to work then?"
Miri'Tok cracks her knuckles with a smile. "Oh we shall."
To the thugs' credit, they had realized that something was very wrong here. Normal people did not react to being threatened like this. Normal people were scared, like Ariane visibly was. David could see it all playing out across their faces as he slowly settles into a fighting stance.
"As the gentleman present, I'll allow you the honor of the first strike." Miri'Tok offers primly.
David considered arguing for a second but instead sketches a little bit of a bow to Miri'Tok.
"Hey! Quit fucking flirting and fight already!" Shouts Miss Blue, her voice breaking just a little bit as Miri'Tok steps forward again, her attention now fully focused on the gangers.
David however beats any response the Apuk warrior might have had by quick drawing his revolver and putting a bullet through the palm of the Miss Blue's hand, and the woman yelps at the unexpected pain.
"Wait your turn child, there's more than enough belt for all of you."
David makes hard eye contact with Miss Blue, his steely gray eyes making the young woman flinch almost instantly as whatever nerve she has left abandons ship and Miss Blue decides that discretion is the better part of valor.
"I'm not getting paid enough for this shit!"
Miss Blue races for the door, scrambling past Miss Green at a full run, who lashes out at her cowardly subordinate and misses. The scowling gang leader doesn't even blink, simply calls war fire and lobs a ball of brilliant blue flame after Miss Blue, who shrieks in pain out on the street somewhere. The fire ball had likely caught her full in the back if David had to guess.
"Stupid bitch. More for us when the girls get here." Miss Green scowls.
Ariane steps back a bit, moving behind Miri'Tok and David, before nervously whispering to her newly declared spouse.
"D-David, the plants! The plants are moving!"
David takes his focus off Miss Green for a second and sure enough, the flowers which were so beautiful... had grown in the presence of war fire, moving closer to Miss Green. Sir David considers what he knows about Serbow and quickly comes to one conclusion.
These plants were from the Dark Forest. This garden had been planted by a sorcerer.
"Up the stairs Ari. Go get the wardens. Now."
"I-I can help, I-"
"Don't argue with me darling. There's only two of them at the moment, and I'm sure Miri'Tok and I can take out the trash, please, go get the wardens. Hurry."
Ariane nods and quickly begins to run... which triggers Miss Red to leap right at her!
"Going somewhere Missy!?"
Whatever Miss Red had intended for Ariane, Miri'Tok didn't let it happen, leaping up and grabbing the other woman by the head and using axiom to violently propel herself downwards, slamming Miss Red's head into the stone with a sickening crunch as Ariane reaches the stairs and scrambles up them, quickly slapping her shifter belt to make it easier for her to move under the somewhat low ceiling of the balcony.
"And then there was one. Unconscious, she'll probably survive though." Miri'Tok notes, wiping her hand off on Miss Red's clothing as if she'd touched something disgusting.
"Artfully done." David notes as he watches Miss Green get more angry with every passing second.
"Goddess fucking damn it!" Miss Green stamps her foot like a petulant child, clearly aware that she's being deeply disrespected by both of her opponents.
Miri'Tok slowly strides towards where Miss Green stands, menace oozing off of her as David slowly moves to her side for a pistol shot.
"Fine! I'll take you both on myself! I don't need that trash! I-"
"Boss! Boss!"
"Holy shit, what happened to Jari'Ven?"
"She caught a back full of warfire obviously! Hurry up! Boss needs help!"
The sound of voices out on the street puts some steel back in Miss Green's spine, and she starts to move to the left to clear a path to attack Miri'Tok without a significant leap to clear some of the foliage.
"Damn. Guess her back up got here."
Sir David grimaces, breaking open his revolver and quickly reloading his one expended round and starting to prime the small explosive charges in the tips of .454 Magnum rounds. Not something he'd normally do out of combat, but then he normally wouldn't only have his favorite revolver to defend himself with either.
Miri'Tok and Miss Green are having a stare down now, and David leaves the two women to their business, covering the gate to the street instead, bringing his pistol up just in time as four Apuk gangers burst through the stone archway and onto the stone walkway slightly above the garden. He snaps his sights onto the first woman through the gate and takes his point of aim from the center of mass to the shoulder. David's revolver roars once and he quickly changes targets to the next gangster through the gate with another supersonic roar as a .454 Magnum screams down range.
Two Apuk women, Miss Pink and Miss Yellow respectively, both drop with brutalized meat and smashed bone where one of their shoulders used to be before they even have a chance to comprehend what was happening.
"What the fuck!?" Miss Orange, another of the new arrivals jerks to the left as she tries to process the maiming of her associates and narrowly missing her own donation of lead and kutha based explosive, the round clipping her ear as it goes whizzing by her cheek. "What the fuck!"
The orange haired Apuk gangster leaps towards David, who follows up with another round fired to her center of mass, but her reinforcement is up and and she manages to only take some bruising from the kinetic impact.
"That was fucking rude little man!"
"Oh you have no idea just how poor my manners can get."
Sir David pushes axiom into the edge of one of his new shoes, the heels and sole reinforced with kutha after watching Captain Bridger's duel with the princess, and puts a brutal kick into Miss Orange's gut. He's immediately rewarded with a sharp expulsion of air and what was likely to be a nasty bruise as he brings the butt of his pistol down on the back of her head, stunning her and opening her up to an axiom nerve pinch, leaving her collapsed in a heap on the stone.
Miss Orange's associate, Miss White, clearly had overestimated Miss Orange's chance at dealing with David, and has instead raced over to help Miss Green, who's actually making a decent showing of herself against Miri'Tok, the blows going back and forth in a whirlwind of supersonic pain. It looked dangerous... but just looking at the faces of the two women told a different story. Miss Green was strained, putting her everything into keeping up with her opponent. Miri'Tok on the other hand wasn't even breaking a sweat. She was barely even engaged in the fight itself, looking more like she was doing some light stretches.
Miss White tries to cut in, and gets an impressive ax kick from Miri'Tok square to her temple for her trouble, leaving her collapsed in a heap on the stone groaning softly as Miri'Tok starts to push Miss Green back towards the wall.
"Didn't anyone teach your minions it's rude to cut in on someone else's dance?"
"I'll show you dancing bitch! I'm through screwing around!"
With a roar of raw, shrieking fury, Miss Green starts to call a massive amount of warfire to her hands, the green tinged flame not even mussing Miri'Tok's hair as she kicks Miss Green square in the sternum and uses it to propel herself clear of the other woman.
"Hah! Scared now bitch? A little green fire will shut your smug ass up! Then I'll burn that cow bitch for steaks! I'm sick and tired of being disrespected like this in my goddamn ci-Mmmph!"
Miri'Tok quietly dusts herself off as vines seize Miss Green from the nearest flower bed, gagging her mouth and binding her body as it slowly starts to drag the now very frightened woman towards the flower bed.
"I did warn you. The law of this place will not be violated. The punishment is death. I can no more change this rule than I can change the tides. Perhaps, as nourishment for the plants of this place, your misbegotten existence will have some sort of value."
There's a few muffled whimpers as Miss Green's body starts to vanish into the foliage... and at the last second David sights in... and shoots Miss Green clean through the forehead just as her body vanishes from sight completely, a little trickle of blood the only evidence she'd ever been in the garden.
Quiet falls on the small shrine as David automatically reloads his sidearm, scans the area once then returns the weapon to the axiom holster on his thigh.
The only thing to break the silence is the occasional crunch and snap from deep within the flower bed.
"Thank you." Miri'Tok murmurs.
"For what?"
"For showing mercy. To be... broken, by the plants of the Dark Forest. I've seen it but once before, and it is a terrible death. I would not wish it on my worst foe. I would have granted the Empress's peace to her if I had a weapon to hand to do so... but going near the flower beds when they're feeding as an Apuk warrior is... dangerous, to say the least."
"Does this happen often?"
"Blessedly, no. Few are foolish enough to come to this place with malice in their hearts, but sometimes youths who forget the old ways and the old laws learn that even in a peaceful act of creation... a sorcerer's wrath cannot be denied. That too, is a lesson of this shrine, and why many Imperial warriors are not so enamored of sorcerers as possible husbands as many women in Apuk society are. We know what they are. What they do. The romance of them is beaten from us and we must accept the reality that they are nature's rage made manifest. The blood scream of the planet herself, some say."
Miri'Tok makes a slight movement of her hands that David instantly equates with a Christian crossing themselves, and the quiet moment is suddenly broken by the sound of hooves and a large number of boots on stone coming from behind them at a run.
"David! David, I brought help!" Ariane breathlessly calls out as she reaches the balcony and stops dead in her tracks. "Though uh. I guess you guys didn't need help huh?"
Four Apuk women in purple and black dress uniforms join Ariane at the balcony. The first of their number, a woman wearing insignia that had been identified as equivalent to an Undaunted Sergeant Major, snorts.
"Ah so that's who you meant had intervened. Hellspawn I wouldn't have run if I'd known Commander Miri'Tok was still here. Thought you left an hour ago ma'am."
Miri'Tok looks up with a smile. "My apologies Nar'Jan, I had taken my leave but I stopped to contemplate my ancestor's war sword a bit longer."
The older woman cracks a smile. "Well bring your new friend back up to the shrine will you? Least we can do is offer your guests the inner shrine's hospitality while we wait for law enforcement. Shame we didn't make it in time, I'm sure it was a decent show."
Sir David chuckles. "Oh not much of a show, some mediocre pistol marksmanship from myself, some talented hand to hand from Miri'Tok, and then someone made a poor life choice with war fire."
Nar'Jan nods sagely. "Ah. Then the plants have been fed. Well. Happens now and then, but come, no sense jabbering out here when there's comfortable chairs and maybe a stiff drink to steady the nerves."
Miri'Tok gestures towards the stairs. "Please, after you."
Sir David shakes his head and mirrors the gesture. "No m'lady, after you. I insist."
"Come together then before I send your wife down there to smack you upside the head, and I come down there to smack you upside the head Miri'Tok! Goddess knows I did it enough when you were a whelp, and I'll damn well do it again!"
The theatrical scowl on Nar'Jan's face draws a giggle from Ariane, and the two warriors start up the stairs as bidden.
"Seems we'll be having an interesting day of tourism after all." Sir David notes.
Miri'Tok chuckles. "Ah, that's where you should have been more prepared, good sir. This is Serbow. There's always something 'interesting' happening here."

2023.06.05 19:21 Dark_Moonstruck Small things matter!

I have been seeing so many people basically drowning in everything that is going on in the world right now, and I can't blame them. From the moment you wake up and glance at your phone, to the moment you go to sleep, you're constantly bombarded with every terrible thing happening on every inch of the planet. What's worse, is people act like if you don't care about every single issue equally all at once, you're a terrible person, regardless of how burned out this makes people get, to the point that they can't care about ANYTHING.
Something I've seen that I think more people need to be aware of, is the people who tend to do the most good? Are the ones who find a problem that has to do with something they're personally passionate about, and work on that in ways they can actually DO, like the people who single-handedly repopulated a species of butterfly by raising them in their greenhouses, or the couple that re-forested hundreds of acres of rainforest by themselves by just going out and planting a few trees every day in their retirement.
Let me tell you about our community garden.
When I first moved into this apartment complex, the 'community garden' were three concrete block raised beds full of sterilized fill dirt. They'd attempted to have a weekly garden group led by one of the case managers here (it's low-income housing, a lot of elderly and people with mental health issues live here so they have on-site social workers) but the soil, being fill dirt that had been treated specifically so nothing would grow in it (the people who built the building went as cheap on everything as they could) instead of garden soil, anything they planted died - both from the soil, and that no one was watering it because the faucets that are right next to it got borked up. They put caps on the faucets themselves with locks so no one would come - mostly the kids - and just leave the faucets on and end up wasting water and flooding things. Problem is, they lost the keys, so no one can remove the caps now, rendering those faucets useless. They borked up the water lines when building the complex also, so even if the faucets didn't have the caps - those lines only have access to water when the sprinkler systems for other areas of the complex are on. So, in order to water the garden, you'd have to either have a very very long hose or you'd have to carry a water bucket around to the other side of the building, fill it up from a hidden faucet there, and walk it all the way back around - as many times as it took to water all three beds. No one was doing that, obviously. It made me very sad seeing three empty garden beds, especially knowing how many people here lived off canned food exclusively - the stuff dropped off by the food bank - so I decided I wanted to do something about it. Mostly because I have leaves growing around my heart and I can't live without dirt under my nails.
For the better part of the first year, I amended the soil. I work on a farm and we regularly get a LOT of mulch (basically wood chips that the city dumps on us after they have to dispose of trees that fall or were removed from construction areas), so I used that and basically any compost or whatever I could get my hands on (I haunt the free tab of craigslist constantly) to start putting nutrients back into the soil.
When I started seeing weeds and bugs, I figured it was ready and started planting the first plants. The first year of planting, I did a lot of tomatoes, peppers, things I thought people would use, along with having one of the beds reserved for herbs and flowers to attract pollinators. Neighbors started seeing me out there in my gardening apron and cowboy hat and waving or complimenting the garden. At first I hauled water in my watering can every day, but eventually I bit the bullet and spent the money to buy a couple of those hoses that scrunch up smaller and connected them so they were long enough.
I noticed, however, that most of the produce went to waste - no one was picking them, possibly thought they weren't allowed to. So, I went to one of the social workers (the original lady who was supposed to do the garden group was gone) and asked if I could start putting the harvested goods with the food that they distribute every week for everyone, so there would be fresh produce along with all the canned stuff, rice and beans.
He was ALL ABOUT this and got me in touch with the lady who runs the food bank, and now every week I harvest everything that's ready, and the security guard lets me into the locked community room where the fridge and all the food storage is so I can clean and prepare it and put it in the fridge for them to hand out. A few neighbors have told me those are the only fresh vegetables they get at all, so I try to grow stuff that's nutritionally dense and easy to prepare.
When I went to a local hardware/gardening store to look for ladybugs (my own balcony garden was getting aphids and I was worried about them spreading), on a whim I asked an employee about if they sponsored community projects. He said yes, and gave me the contact information for who I'd need to speak to. I passed this along to the case worker I'd been talking to, and he called me later to say that they were going to be sponsoring the garden and providing supplies! After a while, they even started doing classes - they did a class where they brought in clay pots for everyone to paint, then pot a small flower in to take home that was a big hit, and they've been talking about doing cooking classes to teach everyone how to cook with the vegetables we grow here. Now they've been discussing starting garden projects at other low-income housing complexes.
One of the case worker's stated goals - I've left him in charge of the more 'social' aspects of the whole thing, like running the classes and all even though he's offered to let me take over doing some stuff, I'm just not good at all that or leadership roles - was to build more of a sense of community and have people get to know their neighbors, so we would stop having incidents where someone passed away and no one knew until the smell was in the halls. He wants people to know who they live next to, so people will feel safer and will notice if someone is missing for a while. So far, it seems to be working, and people have been chatting a lot more and getting involved in the garden and the classes and coming to the food distribution more frequently since it's not just canned peas and bagged rice anymore, and talk with each other while they're there.
I can't fix what's going on in the Ukraine, or the horrors that are being inflicted on trans people. I can't end the droughts, or stop school shootings. I can't make the ultra-rich give a damn about the rest of the world, when they could fix EVERYTHING with little effort. There is very very little I can do in the grand scheme of the world, and while I will help where I can, that's just not my strength. I'm not a politician, I don't have enough money to throw at problems like that to make them go away.
But what I can do? I can grow things. I can grow things that make people happy, that nourish them and help them make connections with other people around them so they're less lonely. And for now, that's enough.

2023.06.05 16:24 Unlikely-Solution587 Critique my London/Paris itinerary please

Hi all! My group of 4 (two couples) will be traveling to London and Paris from the US in September. Our tentative travel dates are Sept 7 to 16th.
Please critique my itinerary below. I love constructive criticism! We are all in early 30s and love to view cities by walking. Of course we will also be using the metro. I know the itinerary needs fleshing out (especially Paris) and am open to all suggestions. We are middle class and tend to be more on the budgeting side. We love sights and while we appreciate art we don't want a museum every day. We tend to pack our schedules but I want to leave enough time to appreciate things!
Suggested London itinerary
Friday Sept 8th
Day One: Westminster
Arrive LGW 6:20 AM
To hotel
Metro to Westminster Abbey-earliest entry 9:30, latest 3:30 and closes one hour after. Busiest in morning hours, calmer in afternoon
Walk to Buckingham palace
Changing of the guard at 11, lasts about 45 minutes.
Lunch
Tour of Buckingham Palace (book tickets in advance). Allow 2-2.5 hours for self guided tour of staterooms. Can add on Garden tour and/or Royal mews for additional fees. Earliest entry 9:30
Walk to Trafalgar Square
Should see: Westminster Abbey, Big Ben, Parliament, Trafalgar Square, Buckingham Palace, Hyde park?
Optional: Churchill War rooms, London eye, St. James Park, Victoria and Albert
Questions- Westminster 1st or Buckingham 1st? Time needed in Westminster? Thinking Westminster 1st in case flight is delayed?
Saturday (Day 2)
Metro to Tower of London
Opens at 9:00, get there at 9:00 and see Crown Jewels?
Yeoman tours begin every 30 minutes starting at 10:00
Included in ticket and highly recommended
Tour of Tower bridge 9:30 to 17:00
Walk to Borough Market for lunch- open Fridays 10-5
St. Paul’s Cathedral-open 8:30 to 4
Should see: Tower bridge, Tower of London, St. Paul’s Cathedral, Borough Market
Optional: Sky garden vs the shard, Shakespeare’s globe
Questions-Should we go see Crown Jewels at 9:00? Sky garden vs shard?
Sunday (Day 3)
Harry Potter studios AM Historic bar tour in PM
Monday (Day 4)
Day trip. Two of the group want to see Stonehenge, two do not. Other day trips in the area? Bath?
Evening in soho and/or a show vs Camden market
Tuesday (Day 5)
Travel to Paris
Lazy day/Optional small outings in Paris
Wednesday (Day 6)
Eiffel Tower at 9:00 AM
Picnic lunch on Champs de Mars- Rue cler good place to buy picnic items
The Louvre
Angelina’s after for hot chocolat
Arc de Triomphe in PM (closer to Eiffel Tower than The Louvre)
Thursday (Day 7)
Walk Pont Neuf to Ile de la Cite
Sainte Chapelle
Walk past Notre Dame (closed)
Break to change
Walk around Montmarte
Sacre Couer Basilica at sundown
Moulin Rouge vs Crazy Horse for dinner
Friday (Day 8)
Versailles
Catacombs in evening- last admission 7:30
Saturday (day 9)
Lazy day/revisit areas of interest. Evening flight home
Sorry for the long post! Thanks for any and all advice!

Advice about substrate for Psilocybe subaeruginosa
Went picking in May, near macedon, Victoria, Australia. From my pickings, I did a live biopsy and a direct spore onto agar. These are the results. Wanted to transplant into a plastic container with shredded cardboard, to encourage mycelium before transplanting outside into wood chip garden. Should I mix some worm castings or compost or manure into the substrate? Not sure what best to do next? Also, should I cut the mycelium up into small pieces before transferring? Any advice would be great!

2023.06.05 12:11 TheGeekyZoologist Jurassic World: The Hegemony of Biosyn (Dominion rewrite) - Important notes, Prologue and Act I

Since we're nearing the one year anniversary of JWD release, I thought it was a good opportunity to share with you the ideas I had for a rewrite of the film. I grouped them in a detailed pitch which I will present this week in a series of five posts. Today's post is about the story's prologue and first act. Tomorrow's will about the second act and so on... This detailed pitch is divided scene by scene and is accompanied by a few notes. It's basically similar to something that someone would present in a pre-production meeting.
However, before you start reading that series of post, I'll suggest that first you check the foreword on this page (https://archiveofourown.org/works/47647999/chapters/120097705) and secondly that you carefully read the paragraph below, as it's about the connection between that JWD rewrite and my previous rewrites (don't worry, you don't have to read the entirety of my stories before this series of posts, just the information below).

Important notes on my AU:

1) For those who didn't read my previous stories
- The stories told in this AU have a darker tone and are more adult than those of the films. Thus don't be surprised by some character actions or events. If they were films, they would be unsuitable for children under 12 in Europe (and the limit would be probably higher in North America). Thus, I would say that the Read at your own risk rule applies here for the younger users of this subreddit. I'm not trying to be edgy or whatever. I'm just an adult writing from an adult perspective. Nothing more and nothing less.
- By the late 2010's and early 2020's, there is still a considerable population of de-extinct dinosaurs and pterosaurs in the Five Deaths. An UN-backed paramilitary organization, the Grey Guard, protects the archipelago and had troops on Nublar up until the fall of Jurassic World.
- The Jurassic World park had feathered dinosaurs and Owen's Achillobator quartet were among those.
- The Fall of Jurassic World happened in 2017 and the Lockwood estate incident in 2019. The Indominus' rampage and the Sibo's eruption happened at the same time while the Costa Rican incident which preceded that of the Lockwood estate happened in the mainland and not on Nublar. Those two incidents are told in Jurassic World: The Red Queen, my FK rewrite (and which we'll abbreviate as TRQ).
- Roberta and the mosasaur died after the Fall of Jurassic World. Thus, they are not in TRQ and The Hegemony of Biosyn. In those stories, Roberta's role is mainly filled by Acrocanthosaurus.
- Claire and Owen aren't exactly identical to their versions from the official film canon. In terms of look, Owen is closer to Jason Momoa than Chris Pratt and Claire, while still being a fair-skinned redhead, is a bit taller and more intimidating-looking than BDH.
- In this AU, Claire is a far more morally ambiguous character than Trevorrow's version. She's more outspoken, and has a the end justifies the means mindset. For a time, she had serious PTSD from the Fall of Jurassic World, during which she was mauled by the Indominus (which clawed her face and bit off one of her arms). She also didn't create the DPG in this AU (someone else did).

2) Spoilers of the end of The Red Queen necessary to better understand the context and plot of The Hegemony of Biosyn.
- The Dinosaur outbreak which resulted from the Lockwood estate incident is less severe than in Trevorrow's version. Dozens of dinosaurs still escaped into the Californian wilderness but by the beginning of The Hegemony of Biosyn, they hadn't the time to establish considerable wild populations (except perhaps for the smaller species) while the dinosaur alert is mostly restricted to western North America. Broad strokes, there is no "Dinosaurs are everywhere on Earth. We're in deep shit! You're wondering how? Shut up, it's magic!" at the start of this Dominion rewrite but more sporadic incidents here and there and only beginnings of biological invasions in some areas. Moreover, TRQ's epilogue insists more on the propagation of de-extinction technology.
- At the end of TRQ, Claire and Owen are hired as field agents by the World De-extinction Monitoring Centre (WDMC), a UN agency.
- Maisie isn't adopted by Claire and Owen. In TRQ, she even has limited interactions with them (she gets involved in the incident only when the Indoraptor enters her room) and Owen isn't her saviour in that story. After the incident, she stayed at the manor with the Lockwood estate employees and just before his death, Lockwood entrusted her to Wu.
- In the late 2010's, InGen's biggest rivals were Biosyn and Grendel. At the end of TRQ, a collapsing InGen is bought by Biosyn and Wu hired by the latter's R&D department.
- Wu and Claire became sworn enemies when she became park director of Jurassic World (this relation worsened during the park's fall following some revelations) and while she left him alone at the end of TRQ, she told him she'll show no mercy if he has a share of responsibility in another disaster.
3) Notable differences between The Hegemony of Biosyn and Colin Trevorrow's Dominion.
- Grant, Malcolm and Sattler are absent. I preferred to leave those characters in peace rather than mistreat them (and even after I finished THOB's detailed summary, I don't see how I could have integrated them in a pertinent way, and there is already many... many characters).
- Most of the fan-service towards the first Jurassic Park was flushed down in the toilets.
- Barry Sembène is absent too. Not only the reasons of his inclusion in Dominion's story didn't conviced them (how what seemed to be just an animal wrangler ends up being now a secret services agent?) but in this alternative universe, him and Owen had started to fall out during the fall of Jurassic World and at the beginning of The Red Queen, we learn that he went back to France. I originally intented to make him one of the main characters of a spin-off set in France (and after the events depicted in The Hegemony of Biosyn) and we would have saw him again only then (wishing to leave dinosaurs behind him, he took a zookeeper position in some zoo in Ile de France, where he works with birds of prey. But a crisis in another part of the country force another of the protagonists (a gendarme) to recruit him due to his experience in InGen's IBRIS program). Thus, the role he's having in Trevorrow's Dominion is given to other characters in The Hegemony of Biosyn.
- Some characters have a different fate.
- A longer story, sometimes similar to that of a political thriller.
- Additional characters and subplots. A hypothetical casting for the original characters is available on the Archive of Our Own page linked above.

Without further ado, let's dive in the story.

Prologue

The prologue is set in mid-2022, in a village of the Austrian Alps, near the Italian border. On the village's outskirts, a man is awakened in the middle of the night by the panicked bleating of his goats. After checking them, he is attacked and killed by a mysterious small predator while one of the goats, a black billy, runs away. Nothing is seen of the predator during that sequence but the two-toed tracks it leaves in the ground.

ACT I: The chessboard and the pawns

Drive-in
After the prologue in Austria, we move to North America and more precisely an Oregon wood where an Acrocanthosaurus (a species introduced in TRQ) is being chased by a Fish and Wildlife Service helicopter. It's basically the drive-in scene from Trevorrow's version except that Roberta is replaced by the Acrocanthosaurus.
News Montage
Soon, the drive-in incident is in the news and we have a news montage with the world situation three years after the Lockwood estate incident. We learn that:
- De-extinction technology is mastered by various organizations across the globe.
- Incidents involving loose de-extinct animals occur from time to time. The controversial Grey Guard, an UN-backed paramilitary organization based in the Five Deaths, has been solicited by various nations to help their authorities deal with those incidents. The USA are however among the nations who refuse to let them intervene on their soil and instead, the US government use the CIA's Dangerous Species Division (which recruited several former InGen employees like Doctor Kajal Dua).
- Mantah Corp fell during those three years while Grendel was considerably weakened after some deadly incidents in Cameroon and southern India (one of their consequence is the outbreak of a dinosaur-related encephalitis in Cameroon, quite similar to one which occurred in Costa Rica in the late 2010s), leaving Biosyn as the number one in the field of genetic engineering.
- All of its biggest rivals now out of the equation, Biosyn has a hegemony and is thriving more than ever despite heavy criticism by some people who bring out the corporation's past controversies (like a certain rabies vaccine test in Chile). In a conference scene, Zoe Murdoch, Biosyn's vice president presents their newest creations, which includes variants from species already introduced in the series (She compares InGen's tyrannosaur, original trilogy's Raptor, Triceratops, Compsognathus and Quetzalcoatlus to Biosyn's. The raptor is feathered, the rex and trike are more in line with modern scientific depictions, the Compy is feathered and docile enough to be sold as a pet, while the quetzal is more pleasant looking than InGen's flying abominations which massacred people during the Fall of Jurassic World). The report also precise that Biosyn created tailored and more docile dinosaurs and use the example of the pack of featherless raptors they made foloaned to motion picture company Europacorp for one of their action films, showing footage of featherless and boxy-headed raptors jumping from roof to roof during a film shooting, where they were handled as easily as trained big cats or even dogs (This use is possible partly because de-extinct creatures have less rights than modern animals).
- Biosyn is also contracted by several governments, including the US, to capture the loose dinosaurs. To their sanctuary and research facility in the Dolomites valley of Auronzo, they sent some of the escapees from Lockwood's estate and their offspring, the animals which escaped Grendel's facilities in Cameroon and India (A group of Nasutoceratops and a 2010's style Spinosaurus are seen during that part of the report), and others... The close ties between Biosyn and the US government are also mentioned (in addition to providing help to the FWS agents, Biosyn has also several important contracts with the government and some people within the Agriculture department and the Food and Drug Administration are former Biosyn employees).
- However, there are some rumours that the Cameroon and Indian incidents were actually triggered by Biosyn and incriminating proofs were brought before the US congress but the investigation commission, led by Senator Christine West, rejected them.
San Francisco
Shortly after this testimony, Guillaume Vuillier, the World De-extinction Monitoring Centre's general director, is seen in the agency's headquarters in San Francisco. Since the US government doesn't seem to be willing to act against Biosyn, he's afraid that the WDMC and its allies have to deal with Biosyn's case alone. After some incidents in the Alps along the border between Italy and Austria involving creatures they presume to be raptors due to the nature of the tracks found, the UN and the Italian and Austrian governments have imposed an inspection on Biosyn's Sanctuary in Auronzo Valley. Vuillier and others suspect that the attacks' perpetrators indeed came from the Sanctuary.
The Inspection
Vuillier travels to Venice, where he meets with Dougal Benett, one of his European field agents, and the rest of the inspection group, which includes Mario Viscontini, head of the AISI (Italy's internal intelligence agency), and Giovanni Pazzi, Minister of the Interior. The inspection group then heads to its rendez-vous point with Biosyn, meets Murdoch and Ramsay (both usually work at Biosyn's HQ in Cupertino, California), and then embark on a Biosyn helicopter which takes them to the Dolomites and the Citadel, Biosyn's research facility (Though it's not as pretty as the building from Trevorrow's vision and a little bit more austere-looking, it's still impressive) which overlooks the Sanctuary.
The group inspect the facility, with head of security Lucrezia Pellegrino explaining how the dinosaurs can't leave the valley (through control chips and invisible fence systems), and even get to meet Dodgson, who made sure to hide anything controversial and have everything look in order. Thus, the inspection group doesn't find anything suspicious and returns to Venice. But the WDMC employees and Viscontini weren't fooled by Biosyn's "Everyone is beautiful. Everyone is nice" presentation, Vuillier points out the Sanctuary's flaws (too small to let a huge number of animals roam it freely, climate is not ideal enough for dinosaurs...) and are aware that controversial, if not illegal research must be conducted in the Citadel's secret wings (as it's way more isolated and hard to access than Cupertino's HQ).
Dodgson is aware of their distrust and both he and Vuillier start moving their pawns on the chessboard.
The DSD
In the CIA's DSD headquarters in San Francisco, the division's leader Isaac Gibbon (and perhaps senator West. I'm not yet sure if I include her in this scene or not. She could be visiting the division about funding matters or something like this) attends a presentation made by one of his agents, Jessica Bigelow. The presentation's topic is Claire Dearing and after summarizing her life (with a few saucy anecdotes and pictures from Claire's youth and early years at JW), Bigelow shows how the fallen park director fascinate some people, especially online, and how she managed to put a part of the public opinion on her side in the recent years after being treated like a pariah in the couple of years that followed the fall of Isla Nublar (Being positively depicted in the DPG documentary Franklin Webb made back in 2019; occasionally making vlogs; appearing on Stephen Colbert's show without her mask and answering his questions with honesty and self-derision...). The CIA agents say that she's the WDMC's most surprising and promising element alongside her fiancé Owen Grady. Both are nicknamed Vuillier's Wolves by them as they, especially Claire, are tend to be ruthless with those who oppose them, especially in unofficial and borderline illegal missions Vuillier give them, consisting in spying and/or sabotaging nefarious de-extinction related organizations. Bigelow also mention that it's highly probable she's also The Ghost of Nublar, a mysterious figure who challenged the Indominus during the Invasion of Burroughs, when Isla Nublar fell.
The ranch
One night, somewhere in the western US (could be Nevada like in Trevorrow's version), a trio of people is seen breaking out in a ranch-like facility. Once they're in its heart, the group split up, with one of its members heading towards another building. The two others, revealed to be Zia Rodriguez and Franklin Webb from the Dinosaur Protection Group (which is led by Zia, as the organisation's founder resigned at the end of TRQ) enters a warehouse which contains rows of cages with baby ceratopsians. While Zia and Franklin film the evidences of the animals' mistreatment, we return to their mysterious companion, whose face is concealed by a balaclava. However, an attentive viewer can recognize her green eyes and her prosthetic hand: It's Claire, who's on an unofficial mission for the WDMC. After avoiding or neutralizing some guards, she breaks out in the facility's offices. There, she discovers documents which might contain indicate a connexion between the illegal dinosaur exploitation and Biosyn (who could be selling embryos, eggs or juveniles to those exploiters before denouncing or sabotaging them years later, being paid by the government for capturing the dinosaurs and finally sending them to their Sanctuary). After this infiltration segment, ensues an action scene where our protagonists have to escape the facility aboard a vehicle stolen by Claire. During this scene, she seriously injures or even kill one guard, something she doesn't care much about at the moment but which will have some consequences.
The following morning, Claire phones Peggy Zubiri (Guillaume Vuillier's assistant, who sometimes act as a "Mission control" person for Claire and her colleagues) to tell her that she has the evidences they were looking for. The former director of Jurassic World then has a discussion with the two DPG members in which Zia laments that despite all her organization's actions, it seems that things aren't evolving in the good direction for de-extinct animals and that the morale within the DPG is at its lowest. They then departs for San Francisco, where Claire has to give Peggy the documents she found before returning to her and Owen's cabin.
The wranglers and the thieves
We then cut to Owen, who's in the middle of a WDMC-US FWS joint operation somewhere in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, where they have to capture some dinosaurs (candidates could be Dryosauruses or juvenile Gallimimuses and Hadrosaurs, as wrangling adults on horseback is quite unrealistic to be honest). However, as they are leading the captured dinosaur(s) back to their base camp, our group has an encounter with Rainn Delacourt and his men. It plays out like in the extended version of Trevorrow's film, with Owen and his companions being forced to give the animal(s) to Rainn. However, just as Rainn's team are taking the dinosaur(s) away, Owen tells one of the FWS agents that this situation is only temporary, as Rainn will soon get a surprise...
Maisie
In Orick, Maisie Lockwood exits the estate to go biking in the area. A scene where she encounters some dinosaurs like in the film might be included here. O'Hara (the old lady who participate to her kidnapping in Trevorrow's film) is seen watching her. She returns to the manor just before the evening. The place is not as vibrant as before (it's almost a ghost manor. As it's the autumn, the place would even look ominous), with only a handful of employees remaining, including Theo Lomas, the man who saved her from the Indoraptor three years ago and who now works as the estate's guard. Officially, Henry Wu became Maisie's foster father when Benjamin died but the geneticist, who was assimilated by Biosyn when it bought InGen at the end of TRQ, now lives in the Dolomites facility and his visits to Orick are rare. Thus, Theo became Maisie's true foster father in addition to being the closest thing to a friend for her. He expresses his worries about her long excursions outside but as she's started to become a rebellious teenager, things are tense.
Vuillier's interview
We cut to an interview of Guillaume Vuillier on the French television set just a few days after the Dolomites Inspection. At first, the journalist ask questions about the inspection of Biosyn's complex and the incidents in the Alps before addressing the rumour which says that the masked individual who recently attacked illegal dinosaur breeders might be a WDMC agent, Claire Dearing to be precise (as the colleagues of the deceased guard(s) claimed the attacker was a woman with a prosthetic arm). The journalist brings out another case where Claire made veiled threats to a suspect while on an official mission (with said suspect declaring she almost acted like a Gestapo member or something like this), and as Claire is Vuillier's subordinate, the journalist ask if he intent to sanction her. Annoyed, Vuillier retorts that she acted on legitimate defence and that those people had the choice to cooperate but didn't. Having noticed strange in the journalist's attitude, he suspect that the French government (Due to certain events in TRQ I won't name to not spoil you, the latter has Vuillier and the couple in their radar) paid them and tried to discredit him through that topic. The interview makes some buzz, enough to attract the attention of Odegaard, Vuillier's boss and the leader of the UN environment programme (the character is mentioned but never seen).
Sightings map
We get several little family scenes with Claire, Owen and Sigurd, their four-year old son. One of those scenes shows Owen briefly looking at a map he pinned in their office, depicting California and the neighbouring states. On it, he put Blue's sightings. The last of those was in Yosemite area, where the Raptor Whisperer searched the Achillobator earlier in the autumn but to no avail.
In the meantime, we learn that Rainn was arrested after the authorities followed the tracking chip Owen put in the animal the poacher stole. With the animal seized by the FWS and him heavily compromised on a judicial standpoint, Rainn is raging.
Nyamu
Just after his return to San Francisco, Vuillier receives a video call from Lester Nyamu, a friend and colleague from the UN environment programme's HQ in Nairobi. After that interview in the French media, Nyamu tells Vuillier that Odegaard fears the bad publicity Claire might give to the WDMC and wants to send him to the US at the end of the winter and have him follow Claire in her missions, acting as an inspector. His inspection will decide if they can keep Claire as a field agent or not.
While on an official field mission, Claire is contacted by Vuillier, who tells her about the current controversy. He announces he is forced to send her back home and have her do teleworking and not participate to any field mission, official or not, until further notice.
Resonating Chamber
Stuck at home, Claire takes interest in raptors' behaviour and reads not only her fiancé's IBRIS stuff but also whatever the WDMC has on the topic, including reports from the scientists stationed in the Five Deaths and the testimonies and notes of Alan Grant and Billy Brennan. After watching a video where a group of WDMC scientists and grey guards stops a raptor attack on Sorna by using a resonating chamber identical to the one Brennan made back in 2001, she remembers Owen commissioned a similar one for Achillobators and finds it. She then start learning to use it.
The Palaeontologist
As Auronzo Valley has received its first snow falls, we are introduced to Biosyn Sanctuary's resident palaeontologist, the Scotsman Rod Drummond. Dodgson asked him to act as a tour guide for two teenage girls, the daughters of an investor with which he is negotiating, but they are not interested in the slightest about what's he is saying and are on their phones even though there's dinosaurs outside (a group of Stygimoloch is seen foraging in the snow). Short-tempered (the character is a bit like the lovechild of Gordon Ramsay and Westworld's Lee Sizemore), Drummond grab one of the phones and smash it against the nearest wall. The girls protest but Drummond gives a long rant in which he almost reveal the Sanctuary's true purpose, something he's really uncomfortable with. When they return, Dodgson ask the girls if they're okay (he has a soft spot for children) and yells at Rod but the palaeontologist ignores him and storms off to his office. Some minutes later, he receives the visit from the girls' father, Nathan Quinn. The investor apologies for his daughters' behaviours and tell Rod that he accepted Dodgson's offer in exchange of a seat in the board of directors.
Bailed out
Rainn is bailed out by a mysterious ally and once free, he plans his vengeance upon Owen. He receives a phone call from an unknown woman and first presumes it's her who bailed him out but it isn't the case. She tells him that she has a mission for him, consisting in capturing a particular dinosaur, a blue Achillobator. Having been told about the relationship Owen had with this animal, Rainn accept the mission, claiming he'll succeed where other poachers failed.
Achillobators
There is a time jump to the middle of the winter, just after the New Year. Claire and Owen recently celebrated the 10th anniversary of their meeting and the Raptor Whisperer is in their office, once again studying Blue's moves on the map, trying to discern a pattern or a trajectory. He ends up realizing that she's heading right towards the area where they live. As if to confirm his guess, there is a shot which shows an Achillobator in the snowy woods.
A few days later, Sigurd, Claire's and Owen's son, is playing in the snow when a young Achillobator with blue feathers steps out of the nearby woods. It's about to pounce on the child when its mother, none other than Blue, calls it back, recognizing the boy from the Orick incident (she nearly devoured him during it but changed her mind at the last second when she recognized Owen's smell on him). Owen rushes to grab his son and Blue stands before her young. Claire steps out of the cabin and while walking towards her fiancé and their child, she uses the resonating chamber. At first, it seems to calm Blue but the raptor then decides to retreat into the woods with her young. The family go back inside the cabin and the couple have a talk about what just happened and debate about what they should do with the two Achillobators as they can't be left in the wild, both for their own safety and that of the local animals and people. One of them think about telling the Fish and Wildlife Service but the other retorts that the FWS is likely to send Blue and her young in their complex in Pennsylvania, where the captured de-extinct animals are usually given to Biosyn and flown to Europe, and that they're not sure if Auronzo Valley's sanctuary is truly safe for them. An alternative is suggested, consisting in capturing them without telling anyone but a few trusted people and then bringing them to the local Wildlife Park Owen worked for between JW's fall and the 2019 incidents. This would only be a temporary solution (if Blue kills locals, they're afraid that the park will be targeted) while Claire would negotiate with Vuillier and one of her friends, Lord Francis Clayton, a British aristocrat who owns one of England's largest zoos and wanted to buy Blue during the 2019 auction InGen held at Lockwood estate (a legal one, unlike the one organized by Mills at the same moment). The couple indeed thinks that the two raptors will be safer in the United Kingdom than in the US, where Biosyn's influence is much stronger. During that scene, Owen also gives a name to Blue's young: Victoria, after Victoria Beckham (in TRQ, it's revealed that he originally wanted to name the raptor squad after the Spice Girls). (Thus, bye bye Beta)
The couple starts planning and organizing the capture operation, even asking the help of Zia as they need a veterinarian, but the news of two hunters mysteriously disappearing in the area reminds them of the situation's urgency. And hearing about this, Rainn Delacourt soon arrives in the area.
Wu's call
Wu calls Maisie, telling her he has something important to show her and he invites her and Theo to the Dolomites. As it's about her mother Charlotte, Maisie accepts.
Tragedy in the Sierra Nevada
Zia, Franklin and one or two other DPG members, along with a couple of people from the before mentioned wildlife park and one of the FWS agent from the wrangling scene, arrive at Owen's cabin, ready to offer their help in Blue's and Victoria's capture. The couple and their allies set off.
But Rainn and his men finds the raptors first and lure Victoria into a trap. Blue tries to free her and kills all those standing in her way but Rainn mortally wounds her and leaves with Victoria before Owen can stop him. During the skirmish, one of the DPG members and the FWS agent are also wounded and Claire and Franklin are forced to drive them to the nearest clinic while Owen, Zia and the others search for Blue. When they find her, they realize she's in agony and Zia tells Owen that this time, she can't save the Achillobator. With great difficulty, Owen takes the decision of putting an end to Blue's suffering. She is buried in a secret location deep in the woods and just before he, Zia and their colleagues departs, Franklin tells Claire that this failed mission was the final straw and that he'll leave the DPG and consider a job offer he recently received, arguing that when amateurs try to make things right, innocents gets hurt and that they should let those kind of issues to competent authorities.
Claire then informs Vuillier about the incident.
Leaving Orick
O'Hara, the Biosyn employee dispatched at Orick, picks up Maisie and Theo at the manor and they leave the estate.

End of Act I.
See you tomorrow for Act II.
